RUST PAINT. By adapting their proprietary process that works with genuine iron into an acrylic paint, home-renovators can achieve an authentic looking rusted-effect on paintable surfaces. Can be applied on interior and exterior settings to give an instant aged-finish. MICACEOUS. Fine particles of pigmented iron oxides fuse to create soft lustrous effects that are reminiscent of a juxtaposed “organic-industrial” finish. Can be sprayed or brushed in two coats to create even or directional effects; suitable both internally and externally. CEMENT PAINT.A collection of authentic coloured cement-finishes that can elevate any internal or external surface above the ordinary. Fine particles of cement powder mixed with a zero VOC binder creates a modern, textural paint; can be brushed in two coats to create even or directional effects; suitable for internal and external applications. TIMBER WASH. Capitalises on the natural grain of timber and is an ideal choice in applications where the timber needs both protection and enhanced colour. Easy to use on timbers such as Cedar, Cypress, Oregon, treated Pine, all texture Ply and hardwoods. Available in both internal and external grades; plus the option of sealing with a topcoat for internal use on furniture, benchtops and floors. CHROMA. A high quality acrylic paint designed for internal and external applications, formulated to achieve stronger opacity, fuller colours and better paintability. Available in a variety of bases including: ceiling flat, flat, low sheen, satin and gloss; suitable for internal and external applications. METTA. A flat textured paint with a streak-free appearance and subtle colour variation that is easy to apply. The depth and flatness of colour achieved will help to conceal variations in the painted surface and makes Metta paint ideal for façades . Metta is a durable flat base and can be over coated with clear acrylic sealer for added serviceability. Extra texture can be achieved with the addition of Axolotl Grain, a fine-grade sand designed to be mixed into the Metta base at time of painting; suitable for internal and external applications.
Rover recently released their Duracut 400 and 800 series comprising four models. The 159cc Rover 800 engine powering the four swing back blades featured on the Duracut 820 and 850SP will cut through any length of grass like a breeze; while the 410 & 420 models [a touch less powerful] make either series an ideal domestic and commercial product. Turf experts recommend lawn treatments as early as autumn to avoid an onslaught of summer’s bindii infestation. Turf Australia advises that bindiis develop in winter then drop hard, prickly seeds in spring and summer when it’s too late to treat them. But if you prepare early you can rid your yards of this summer’s barefoot nightmare.

Spray from May: Depending on your location and climate conditions, May is the best time to start giving your lawn herbicide treatments. Bindii seeds typically germinate in May, and then with the help of winter rain, continue to germinate for several months. If you’ve had problems with bindiis in the past, make sure you’re vigilant and continue to spray throughout winter. By delaying treatment until spring, you may be able to eliminate bindiis only by pulling the weed roots from the soil. Herbicide hints: Blanket spray affected areas of your lawn with selective broadleaf herbicide treatments. Allow two weeks for the bindii to die, but if more weeds emerge then spray again at two-week intervals. Ensure you choose the right herbicide for your type of lawn. If you have a Buffalo lawn you need to buy a buffalo-friendly herbicide. Mow regularly: Bindiis thrive in grass when the soil is more compacted or exposed to sun. Ensure you mow and aerate regularly to keep grass an even height.

Renovated and newly-built properties in Qld must comply with new smoke-alarm legislation Qld home renovators will need to ensure they comply with stringent new smoke alarm legislation that came into effect in Qld on 1st January 2017. All new homes or units and substantially-renovated homes or units that are subject to a building application submitted from 1 January 2017, now require the installation of hardwired, photoelectric interconnected smoke alarms. The main changes set out in the Fire and Emergency Service (Domestic Smoke Alarms) Amendment Act 2016 include a greater number of smoke alarms throughout the property; a change in their location; the type of alarm; and the way they are installed. Rather than at the entry of each bedroom, smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom; in the hallway; and in any other location where someone may sleep, like a living room. Smoke alarms in the dwelling must be photoelectric; not also contain an ionisation sensor; and must be hardwired to the mains power supply with a secondary power source [battery]. They also have to be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling, so all activate together, rather than just the alarm that is activated first. Properties that aren’t newly-built or significantly renovated will have more time to comply. However, that five year deadline will arrive quickly, so it’s worth making plans and starting to budget in order to meet the new compliance laws. As the next deadline approaches electrician appointments may be in shorter supply than normal. It’s advantageous for all landlords, investors and home owners to make a booking sooner rather than later to avoid the risk of being non-compliant due to a potential shortage of electrician-services at the last minute. Luxury upholstery fabrics designed in NYC Maharam Design Studio [New York City] recently introduced four new textiles, expanding a series that has previously explored noble natural fibres like camelhair, cashmere, horsehair, merino wool, and silk. Available in Australia from Kvadrat Maharam Studio, Surry Hills Sydney. Pressed Linen [woven in Belgium] features a single weighty yarn in both the warp and weft, resulting in a dimensional surface with an elegant drape and handwoven appeal. In deference to the material, the palette features cool greys, as well as bleached warm neutrals ranging from cream and ecru to driftwood. Plume blends the cellulose fibres of linen, cotton and rayon with a modest amount of nylon to produce a durable construction with a softly napped surface. An underlying structure of fine cotton supports a loosely entangled, crimped yarn with fibrous blooms that have been gently pressed. This organic texture is emphasized across two naturally variegated colours.
Annie Sloan develops a range of gilding waxes Annie Sloan recently released a range of Gilding Waxes designed to help create effects and transformations. A quick and easy way to add a metallic touch to your painted furniture or decorative pieces, this collection is available in five colours: warm gold, bright gold, bright silver, dark silver and copper depending on your chosen effect. You can apply these waxes to ornate carvings and mouldings to enhance texture and detailing; or create gilded shapes, lines and designs using some of the Annie Sloan stencils. Taubmans Sample Pots The new Taubmans Sample Pots are available in 250ml and 500ml sizes, priced from $5.00. To get the best results from your sample pots Taubmans recommends using Monarch 25mm Sample Pot Brushes, priced at $2.38 for a pack of two. Taubmans suggests using these sample pots to trial colours on small areas before taking the plunge and painting entire spaces. Colours will change with different lighting and reflection and so each colour looks different in every house. Testing your paint colour with sample pots allows you to see the colour at different times of the day and see how it looks in your surroundings. This way you can test a couple of colours at one time to work out your best palette. For example: a blue might take on a greener tone depending on its surroundings; or what you thought was a very bright white might have a slight yellow to it in your house due to the timbers in the room or the direction it is facing.
Material contrast is the focus of Imbue, with a low, matte pile softening sleek metallic stripes; a combination of fine chenille yarn with knitted, lustrous rayon. A compact construction, discrete scale, and architectural palette balance these high-impact materials for a tailored effect. In addition to these three upholstery fabrics, Maharam Design Studio developed a rug characterised by premium natural materials. Lana is woven in Guatemala with long-staple wool fibres from New Zealand. Dulux interior colour suggestions for winter-2017 Offering a luxurious take on the industrial trend, Dulux suggests that a moody palette with warm metallics is the way to go for winter-2017. Promoting raw, pared-back beauty, this winter’s colour palette is derived from the 2017 Dulux Colour Trends’ Construct theme. Dulux key colours including Reckless Grey, Tirau Double, Ahoy, Winter Terrace, Five Fingers Peninsula, Panda Pod, Concrete Effect and Copper Effect can make any space in your home feel modern and contemporary. Being predominantly neutral they are very accessible: from the lightest variation, Dulux Winter Terrace, a soft grey/beige; right through to the darkest hue, Dulux Ahoy, which is an alluring deep blue. Whilst home-renovators may not naturally gravitate to deeper colours, neutral shades are easy to incorporate without overwhelming a space, according to Dulux. Darker hues can create a dramatic backdrop to highlight furnishings to make a statement. Deeper colours can also be balanced when paired with lighter schemes. Utilising Concrete Effect with its cool hue balances warmer textiles; while hints of Copper Effect can create a harmonious and welcoming space. Incorporating textured surfaces such as Copper Effect adds further dimension and creates focal points in a predominantly minimalist colour space. Reckless Grey. A slightly warm grey with a hint of red undertone that can be used for main walls and living spaces. Tirau Double. A soft grey with a silver undertone, this colour can be used in any space in the home and combined with brighter and deeper hues; or for a simple tonal effect pair with crisp cool whites. Five Fingers Peninsula. This mid-toned versatile colour is a muted blue with a greyish, cool undertone to provide depth. Winter Terrace. This elegant grey/beige has a natural stone appearance that allows almost any colour to successfully shine when paired. Concrete Effect. The refined, modern industrial effect of polished concrete is ideal for making a statement in the home. Copper Effect. This paint creates a sophisticated balance when paired with Construct’s blues, greys and Concrete Effect. Panda Pod. This neutral mid-based grey is the perfect balance between a cool white and a dark charcoal. By combining deeper or brighter colours with Panda Pod, you can bring a sense of harmony and poise to any space. Ahoy. This deep and alluring blue can accompany spaces painted in grey/beige, cool white, metallic or Concrete Effect. DIY-painting videos from Taubmans can help bring your walls to life The trend for painting feature walls has evolved over the years from just a single wall, to a more dynamic injection on two or three walls and, more recently, to less static use of colour. Using paint for patterns and shapes is a relatively simple painting task to take the interior of your home to a new level of impact. Painted shapes can create texture, movement and a talking point that is usually reserved for artwork and wallpaper. For example, using stencils with a mix of flat and gloss in older homes will give an effect of traditional “flocked” wallpaper; but when used in Taubmans latest colours such as Annapolis Blue or Casino can keep it relevant to contemporary tastes, perhaps accessorised by introducing designer furniture as a contrast to period architectural details. Simple is always the way to go for bedrooms, nurseries and main areas, so sticking to two or three colours is ideal; and then keep the shapes to a simple repetitive pattern if you are using stencils; and one or two major angles if you are doing linear shapes.
