Solid brass Italian-made door handles and pulls The Como and Bellagio are the latest additions to Pittella’s range of premium-quality door- and drawer-hardware. In solid brass, they perform effortlessly as handles, hooks, pulls and knobs and can be used in a variety of applications throughout your home. Bushfire-resistant doors Homes built in bushfire areas must comply with Australian Standard AS3959-2009, which was put in place to improve the construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas. There are six Bushfire Attack Level [BAL] ratings with BAL40 assigned to very high risk zones, the second highest level; with BAL FZ – Fire Zone being the highest level. Traditional building materials such as timber doors and door frames that have been tested to meet the radiant heat and flame exposure requirements of the Australian Standard AS1530.8.12007 are suitable for use in bushfire prone areas. Corinthian Doors’ entry door system meets all regulatory requirements for building in bushfire zones up to BAL40. Australian households could save Heated towel $300M+ through better insulation rail with varying temperature settings Recent research on the energy-efficiency of Australian homes has revealed that current minimum requirements for insulation under Australia’s building regulations are not the most cost-effective. The research shows millions of dollars could be saved through higher standards of insulation. Insulation levels higher than the current minimum required could save residents $312 million over 30 years. On average, ceilings require a 50% increase in insulation and walls up to 35%. Inadequate insulation for both heating and cooling will cost individual households anywhere up to $6,000 over time.

The research was carried out by Pitt&Sherry in partnership with the Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity, Knauf Insulation and the Association of Wall and Ceiling Industries. It analysed the current “deemed to satisfy” levels against “cost-optimal” levels. The research highlights an important issue, given heating and cooling makes up an average of a third of home energy bills. When it comes to insulation the majority of new houses adhere to only the minimum code requirements. This research highlights that in most states and house types this is not the most cost-effective. Across the board the vast majority of Australian homes would benefit from insulation levels above the current standard.

Topping up ceiling insulation in existing homes was shown to be the number-one priority. An uninsulated home loses and gains more heat through the ceiling and roof than any other part of the house. About 22% of heat from the average uninsulated house is lost through the walls and up to 30% of heat is typically lost through the ceiling. Perfect Fit Door Installation Service Corinthian Doors recently launched its Perfect Fit Door Installation Service through Bunnings Warehouses [in Sydney]. Perfect Fit is an end-to-end door-installation service that offers home-renovators a quick, easy and affordable way to replace the doors in a home. The new service includes custom-made doors that are pre-painted and installed. It’s as easy as choosing the design from a range of over 50 Corinthian external and internal doors, the door furniture, hardware and popular paint colours; and then placing an order at the Special Orders Desk at Bunnings Warehouse across the Sydney metropolitan area. A Corinthian Doors consultant will follow-up to arrange a time for a pre-installation site assessment, which includes an inspection and measurement of all jambs and openings. Any minor carpentry work, such as hinge position adjustments, is included in the cost. Once the door openings have been measured and mapped, the configurations are sent to Corinthian’s manufacturing facility; the doors custom-made to suit each opening; and professionally painted. The door hinge positions are routed to match those on the home’s jambs, along with the matching latch position for the door furniture. Designing your Man Cave There’s a lot of talk about Man Caves these days, but what should you think about when turning a simple room into the ultimate man-retreat? Shaynna Blaze, interior designer and Taubmans Paints ambassador has some suggestions: Some key design and decorative elements for the ultimate Man Cave. The key is what type of Man Cave you are after, which will help you consider what is needed. Firstly, lots of power outlets and remotes for as many gadgets that can be driven in one small space. Next is colour to set the scene: is it to be energetic for sports watching? Natural hues of the landscape for crafting hobbies like wood-turning or furniture-making? Or dark and rich colours for playing pool and darts? While these are stereotypical, making sure you know why you want a Man Cave in the first place will drive the furniture and colour scheme. Concealed toilet cistern with designer flush-plates Through the Rogerseller network, Viega has expanded its range of concealed cisterns, with the release of an under-counter model – the Eco Plus 2L. Aesthetics, hygiene, water conservation and easy installation are some of its technological benefits. Viega’s precision-engineered concealed cisterns feature steel frames designed for easy fixing with the strength to support wall-hung pans. The Eco Plus’ 830mm height makes it ideal for under-counter cistern installations, providing an option for creative bathroom-renovations. It is rated as WELS 4-star, based on 3 and 4.5 litre flush – with the large flush adjustable to 6 litres. The cisterns have been created with a single piece flush valve, which has the dual benefit of a short travel distance plus less force required to flush. The Eco Plus 2L can be combined with Viega’s range of impressive flush plates that have been designed around short-stroke, low-force activation; and includes push button rocker action, Bowden cable or electronic touchless technology. The cistern components are concealed behind a collection of beautifully crafted plates that offer many design and materials combinations including chrome, stainless steel, plastic or glass.

Economic options for adding a touch of luxury to your backyard Having a premium outdoors living space is one of the best ways to enjoy your backyard. Investing in premium options for the backyard makes sense. Just like the interior of your home, the exterior should also be well-designed. Adbri Masonry brand ambassador, and expert landscaper, Jason Hodges shares some design ideas for consideration: Resort living in your own backyard. A pool adds value to any home. The key to making the most out of a pool and its surrounding space is to take the time to enhance these areas. An important consideration is safety. Be sure to use a slip-resistant paver that suits wet areas such as Adbri’s Euro® range, including Euro® Classic, Euro® Slate and Euro® Stone, that offer a coarser texture and are a top choice for both aesthetics and slip-resistance. Cabana – the outdoors room. A swimming pool often becomes the focal point of a home’s exterior. Adding a cabana offers guests an inviting space to relax, freshen up and dine. Lufkin laser range Lufkin has released a new Laser Range [available from the APEX Tool Group], catering to everyone from the home DIYer to Tradies. The components used in Lufkin products are as tough as they are precise. The LLS2 Laser Square [$79.50] projects two lasers at a 90-degree angle onto the wall or floor, making it suitable for use around the home on smaller indoor jobs. It’s equipped with a wall mount, and two bubble vials for wall and floor levelling. A 7m range allows for effective use in tiling, flooring, picture hanging, wallpapering, painting and many other applications. At the other end of the scale, Lufkin’s LR600 Dual Beam Auto Levelling Rotary Laser & Detector [$1,714] is a heavy hitting measuring tool with the capability to handle the biggest jobs, projecting a rotary laser horizontal plane, as well as a laser plumb beam. The gradient feature allows slope scanning at selected grade angles. It also incorporates an innovative electronic auto leveller. A rainproof and dustproof casing make it suitable for all conditions; while a detector and a remote control enable long range operation.

New saw blades IRWIN® Tools recently launched its nextgeneration WeldTec® Circular Saw Blade range. The blades feature innovative welded carbide teeth for outstanding strength. The new blades are designed for construction, demolition and specialty applications, allowing Tradies to get more out of their tools, increasing efficiency and productivity on the job. Reciprocating saw blades LENOX® recently released its new Demolition CTTM Reciprocating Saw Blades and Bi-Metal Reciprocating Saw Blades with Power Blast Technology™. Engineered for fast performance, the new Demolition CT Reciprocating Saw Blades are carbide tipped for up to five times longer life in nail-embedded wood-cutting applications. Each tooth is precision ground on multiple surfaces, creating optimum angles that allow the blade to cut through nails with ease. Updated Nespresso CitiZ Nespresso recently refreshed the design of its CitiZ range of coffee machines. The revitalised design has premium finishes and slimmer proportions, ideal for any kitchen or office setting. This upgrade covers the original CitiZ machine; and the CitiZ&Milk with the Aeroccino milk frother. Both machines feature a 25-second heat up time; two programmable coffee sizes; and energy-saving automatic power-off settings.
