Winter 2016 painting trends from Dulux Interiors will take on a darker transformation with an emphasis on the 1970s in Winter 2016. Intense blues, moody purples as well as warm mauves with space-age metallic highlights will feature in the Dulux Colour Trends for Winter 2016. Taking its cues from deep oceans and infinite galaxies, these darker winter colours juxtaposed with luxurious shimmering accents evoke visions of glowing sea creatures and celestial objects such as planets, moons and exploding stars. The key colours of winter, including Dulux Odyssey, Plush, Extinct and Metallics, Jupiter Jazz and Thebe Touch, create a special look and feel when the darker hues are paired with striking metallics, which add interest and light. Dulux advises that you shouldn’t feel afraid to use darker colours in your home. Darker colours can create an ambience that can’t be achieved with lighter hues. You can add vibrant accessories against the darker backdrop if you feel it needs a little more brightness. Metallics can create a statement with a luxurious feel and an underlying softness. Jupiter Jazz is a warm and welcoming colour perfect for bedrooms and casual living spaces. Deep colours are especially ideal in living rooms with a home cinema, as darker backdrops make the viewing experience more dramatic and colours may appear to look stronger on screen. A bedroom is also a great space for darker colours as it is a room predominantly used at night, adding beautiful lighting and light bedlinen may help to balance the space.

Handling cold, wet or oily materials with the incorrect glove type can create safety issues as your hands become cold, leading to a loss of feeling and control. If your glove does not have a barrier against that liquid or ice, the moisture soaks through and your hands could become wet, cold and potentially slip inside the glove. As your hands become increasingly cold and numb, sensitivity is lost and the ability to control the materials you are handing is reduced.
Reciprocating saws make projects easier. They perform easily through very labour-intensive applications, and can cut just about anything. WORX recently released their 20V Max Lithiumion Reciprocating Saw WX508.9 [$149]. With a no-load speed of 2,900rpm and a pendulum function, it offers improved cutting efficiency when sawing through wood, PVC pipe, and steel materials. The saw is simpler thanks to the tool-less blade change system; and of course cordless.

Gyprock’s perforated plasterboard provides acoustic performance with design options CSR Gyprock developed its perforated plasterboard range, Gyptone, to provide architects, designers and home-renovators with ceilings and walls that achieve high levels of acoustic performance. The plasterboard perforation together with acoustic fabric lining reduces echo and noise reverberation; and is suitable for both ceilings and walls. The Gyptone Range offers three perforation patterns: 12mm Square; 12mm Square Minigrid; and Slotted Minigrid; each with different percentages of open area to meet most acoustic application requirements. Each board is 2400mm x 1200mm x 12.5mm; the boards can be used for curved installations down to a radius of 6000mm [dry bending] to create interesting architectural features; and all four edges of the sheet are recessed to make flush jointing quicker and easier, which negates the need for butt joints. Matching access panels are available comprising a plasterboard frame that is easily set into the ceiling and a 510mm square hatch-piece that fits neatly into the frame. These panels provide access to the roofcavity while ensuring a seamless look across the surface. Step-by-step garden edging for the DIY enthusiast Installing landscape edging is an easy DIY project that can enhance the aesthetics of your yard by separating the lawn from the garden bed. It not only looks great, but requires little to no maintenance. Adbri Masonry ambassador Jason Hodges offers some simple steps to creating the perfect lawn edge. Consider using a product such as Lawn Edge Blocks by Adbri Masonry as they are DIY friendly like a traditional brick, but are purpose made for garden edging. The blocks can be installed two ways: one way to create a higher edge; or the other way for a ready-made mowing strip which means less time doing edges. The best part about having a higher edge is that it stops turf runners from creeping into your plants. Separating the garden from the lawn. After marking your area, use a spade to cut away at the soil where the lawn and the garden bed currently meet. Continue for the length of your edge and make sure it is deep enough to accommodate your road base, sand and cement mix and Lawn Edge Block. You want the lawn edge flush with the grass when complete to make mowing an absolute breeze. Creating a base. In the newly formed trench, install the road base to a depth of 50mm to 75mm. Compact this with either a heavy implement or walk over it continually to make sure the road base settles completely. Placement of the Lawn Edge Blocks. Before you lay your wet mixture [next step], place the units down to make sure the joints are nice and even. It is really important to implement this step, especially if there are any angles or curvatures within the edging that may be tricky to coordinate. Where necessary with curves, cut your units with a small masonry grinder or brick saw to suit your handy design. Time to mix. Mix your sand and cement to a ratio of 6:1 and then add water slowly to create a firm yet damp consistency. Let’s make it stick. When you are happy with the placement of the Lawn Edge Blocks, lifting one up at a time, place a generous amount of the sand and cement mix under the unit and spread evenly. You can level with a float. Before placing the units back down on top of the mud mixture wet the underside of the unit with water. Continue this process the whole way along the unit edging and check the level from unit to unit. It is important to wet each unit before placing it in the sand and cement mixture to aid in adhesion between the bedding material and the lawn edge. The finished product. Once the Lawn Edge Blocks have set into place sit back, relax and admire your handy work.

Wash the residue off with a pressure washer or stiff bristled brush and hose on high pressure. When the timber is completely dry, apply a liberal coat of Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro [1-litre $51.15 in your colour of choice], in the direction of the grain. Raising the roof on one of Australia’s best-kept renovation secrets With my granny-flat plans complete I met with my renovationteam. The certifier said “Where’s the roof?” The engineer added “Oh, you don’t want to go with traditional rafters for the roof?” And this was after I had complained to my draftsman, “Mate, I can’t see the SolarSpan Roofing on the drawings you sent through.” Can you see a theme here? SolarSpan is an innovative product that eliminates about four trades during home-renovations; saves money; but you have to remind your Tradies about it. SolarSpan is made by Aussie company Bondor in Australia. Think of it as a giant Colorbond® sandwich. SolarSpan is predominantly used for pergolas but it’s also suitable for home-roofing-renovations and granny-flat-construction. It’s strong enough to walk on with no internal supports; comes with COLORBOND® steel roof and ceiling sheeting that is very hardy and can be cleaned down from time to time; has service ducts for electrical wiring; and allows for recessed downlights, skylights, ceiling fans and other fixtures. It’s an all-in-one, pre-painted product. To preclude scratches or dings it comes with a plastic protective-layer - but you can’t drop it cold! It spans up to 7.5 metres without supports. The span was important to provide an overhang, as the granny-flat is torched by the late westerly afternoon sun. But you do need three strong mates [with one to guide the panels onto the receiver channel] and one to lift it all into place. You pull out the drill-driver to screw it off; and then have a cuppa. In an hour it’s done. It’s that simple.
When you consider it eliminates several trades it’s very economical: •
You don’t need a carpenter for the rafters.

You don’t need a roofing insulator for the insulation.
•
You don’t need a roofing tiler for the tiling.
•
You don’t need a carpenter for the eaves.
•
With a pre-finished ceiling underside you don’t need a painter.
Another way you save money is its speed of installation. I collected some of my neighbours and we had it up in an hour. That was complete! Nothing to paint. Nothing to do. Done. It all slides together like a giant meccano set. Watch it on YouTube “Backyard Blitz Renovation Using SolarSpan” and “InsulLiving Building System Revolutionary Energy Saving Homes in Australia”. One of the many benefits of the product is its green credentials. There’s no heat transfer. Combined with Bondor’s Structural Insulated Walling product it creates a thermal envelope that can exceed eight-star energy efficiency requirement for the Building Code of Australia. Miele rangehoods with external fan motors Miele Australia now offers a selection of powerful rangehoods with external fan motors to achieve greatly reduced noise levels during operation. While this is the first time Miele has introduced this concept in Australia, the separation of the motor from the rangehood, with its installation away from the kitchen, has been part of Miele’s product range in Europe for a number of years. There are two slimline (DA 3466 EXT and DA 3496 EXT) and two built-in (DA 2270 EXT and DA 2690 EXT) Miele rangehoods available for use with three different styles of external fan motors, resulting in 12 options. Combination packages of rangehood with the selected external fan motor are priced from $2,298. Motor option AWG 102 is designed for vertical installation on an external wall. A curved, high quality stainless steel casing directs the extracted air in a downward direction and provides the high performance motor with effective protection from the elements. Motor option DDG 102 has been designed for installation on angled tiled roofs. In addition to its decorative high quality stainless steel casing, it is supplied complete with the appropriate roof flashing. This makes it ideal for freestanding homes. Motor option ABLG 202is designed not to be seen externally. It is the ideal choice where design criteria or building regulations may require the external fan motor not to be visible from outside the home. This unit can be installed in the roof space, a butler’s pantry, or in the garage. In situations where sound emissions to the open atmosphere may be of particular concern, Miele offers optional DASD 150 silencers, which can be installed in any suitable ducting of 150 mm diameter.
Two HEPA-filtrationGas cooktop with enabled air purifiers from intelligent slider controls Vornado Vornado recently released their AC500 [$489] and AC300 [$319] Air Purifiers. Both models use vortex action to intake and clean all the air in a room up to 30m2 [AC500] or 20m2 [AC300]. True HEPA filtration removes up to 99.97% of airborne allergens down to 0.3 microns in size including pollen, pet dander, smoke, bacteria, mould spores and dust mites. Other features of the AC500 include: Filter Replacement Indicator; Sleep Mode; uses a combination of two carbon and two HEPA Filters; CADR Ratings: Dust – 218, Pollen – 245, Smoke – 205; advanced dust sensing; does not emit ozone. And for the AC300: the carbon filter captures larger initial particles and odours passing through the unit; Filter Replacement Indicator; uses a combination of one Carbon and one HEPA Filter; CADR Ratings: Dust – 152, Pollen – 170, Smoke – 142; does not emit ozone.

Switzerland-based V-ZUG Appliances has just released a range of gas cooktops with slider touch technology, replicating the precision-cooking and navigating-benefits of an induction cooktop. This intelligent slider touch technology allows you to easily navigate between an array of cooking and safety functions with the touch of your finger, including: Melt Function. The temperature remains between 40 and 60-degrees C, which is ideal for melting butter or chocolate. Simmer Function. The temperature remains between 70 and 94-degrees C – so no boiling-over. Keep Warm Function. Automatically keeps the temperature at a constant 65-degrees C. Pause Button. Prevents boiling-over if you are interrupted. The power is reduced to the same level as the Keep Warm Function [65-degrees] for a maximum of 10-minutes. The range comprises four models: 384mm single gas wok burner [$2499]; 284mm double-burner [$2499]; 571mm four burners [$3499]; and 897mm five burners [$5499]. Each comes with a black glass surface-finish; brass burners; and dishwasher-safe pan holders. Other features common to all models include: 9 power settings; auto switch-off and child-proof lock; automatic boost; timer; and automatic re-ignite function.

Collection of Victoria built-in cooking appliances from Italian supplier Smeg Smeg recently released its collection of Victoria built-in cooking appliances. Devotees of both contemporary design and vintage style will be impressed by the timeless aesthetics of the Victoria built-in that looks equally at home in contemporary loft-style apartments as a country cottage. The collection builds on Smeg’s original freestanding Victoria models and comprises 60cm single and double ovens, both with the option of pyrolytic cleaning; plus 45cm high compact models; and warming drawers. The range of colours has also been expanded with white and stainless steel being added to the original colours of black and panna. Jewel in the crown of the Victoria range is the SFPA6925 60cm multifunction pyrolytic oven with its 16 cooking functions [including proving and Sabbath], 20 SmartSense menus and soft-close door. The Victoria collection showcases the aesthetic appeal of high quality enamel that exudes timeless elegance. The Victoria Speed Oven SFA4920MCN is another stand out in the range. In the popular Compact format The Speed Oven combines circulating microwave power with traditional convection functions to dramatically reduce cooking times – just 30 minutes to cook a whole chicken to golden perfection. The Victoria Compact Ovens – including the Speed Oven and Combi Steam Oven – are 45cm high and designed to be installed as a bank of appliances. They integrate seamlessly with the Victoria 60cm models in terms of both aesthetics and dimensions. Fascias will align and controls will match – creating a customised cooking platform. And you can add a 15cm high warming drawer beneath the compact oven for a totally aligned look. The Victoria double oven, in a choice of black, white, panna or stainless steel, offers versatility with two ovens of 79L and 41L capacity with a total of 17 cooking functions [and four for the auxiliary], 50 Smart Sense Plus auto menus and pyrolytic cleaning. To complete the Victoria aesthetic there is a 15cm high warming drawer with “push to open” function – thermostatically controlled it is perfect for keeping food warm and/or warming plates and serving dishes.
Combination 445-litre fridge, freezer and wine chiller Deeper than a standard fridge, ASKO’s fully adaptable fridge freezer and wine chiller will suit just about all storage needs. The fridge freezer features 445-litre capacity, height adjustable shelving, flexible loading racks and ice-maker. Fresh and frozen foods are preserved in the best way possible thanks to a dual refrigeration system. The fridge drawers also have a separate temperature control to select wine, freezer or fresh-food mode. A convertible freezer drawer allows conversion from fridge to freezer and vice versa in just three hours – a useful function when more food needs to be stored for a dinner party or extra space is required for storing large food. The wine fridge with convertible freezer drawer goes beyond wine storage and acts as a small wine care system. Holding 106 bottles, it features a dual zone to create the ideal storage environment for both red and white wine and the temperature can be set according to the type of wine being stored. Beechwood racks mean that the wine will not cool too quickly and the bottles will not be damaged. The bottom rack acts as a display rack and can be angled upwards where already opened bottles can be safely stored. Concealed undermounted rangehood suitable for stir-fry cooking Rangehood design has gone full circle with Smeg Appliances’ designers preferring the unobtrusive look of a concealed model in order to create a visually uncluttered space. With four speed settings Smeg’s Diamond concealed undermount rangehood [KDIAM90AX , $2690] can remove the grease-laden fumes from the fiercest stir fry. The intensive setting removes a massive 1555m3 of air an hour; while the noise level is kept to a minimum - just 46dBA at the lowest setting. Having a width of 90cm and a finish of high grade stainless steel this rangehood can be ducted directly to the atmosphere or recirculated. It has four LED lights for clear, shadow-free cooking; two stainless steel baffle filters with replacement indicators; and optional activated-charcoal filters.
