God’s Silence Broken

Children ministered to through the “Remember Nhu” program.

by Carl Ralston ’92

Twelve years after coming to Christ, I was sharing with friend and mentor, Dr. John David Geib [former assistant professor of biblical studies at Malone], that God had seemed silent to me for almost a year. Soon after, I went on a vision trip to Thailand with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) in November of 2003. I knew God was there and my faith was not shaken, but God still seemed silent. I was also meditating on The Purpose Driven Life, asking God to show

me His purpose for my life, and singing each day a love song to Jesus called, I Give You My Heart. During the last seminar in Thailand, I heard a shocking talk by Rick Drummond, a C&MA missionary to Cambodia. Rick explained in general how bad the living conditions are in Cambodia, particularly in regard to the sex-trade industry. He showed us a photo of Chup Ly, a beautiful sixteen-year-old Vietnamese refugee in Cambodia. He then showed a snapshot of her at age 19—right before she

died of AIDS. Chup Ly’s family had sold her into a brothel. As Rick showed us the two contrasting pictures of Chup Ly, he said, “This is the true cost of the sex-trade industry.” Then Rick shared a story about a twelve-year-old girl named Nhu. Through their ministry, Nhu began attending their Christian school, accepted Jesus as her Savior, was baptized, started growing as a Christian, and publicly shared her faith. In the picture of Nhu it seemed to me that I could see Jesus shining

through her face. But then, he told us how Nhu had lived with her grandmother, a devout Buddhist who threatened to sell her to a brothel. While Rick was in the U.S. for a medical furlough, he heard that Nhu’s grandmother had fulfilled her threat and sold Nhu for $300. Based on statistics, Nhu is almost certain to contract AIDS and die as Chup Ly did. Rick closed his story by asking us to remember that Nhu is our twelve-year-old sister in Christ. At that point in the seminar, God’s silence to me was broken, for I heard what I believed to be God quietly speaking to my heart, “Remember Nhu.” Following the seminar I sat for three hours in the Chiang Mai Starbucks coffee house sorting out with God what “Remember

Nhu” meant. I was humbled by His power as I overheard three American girls at a nearby table discussing their two-week mission trip of living with victims of the sex-trade industry. As it turned out, the girls were used to lead me to the first ministry we would partner with called “New Life Ministries” in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Our God is an awesome God! I plan to use the talents God has given me to the best of my ability to glorify Him and help these girls. In Mark 9:37 Jesus says, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me but the One who sent Me.” Continued on next page…

I spent the next eight months investigating this horrific problem; contacting missionaries in Cambodia and Thailand for dialogue and attempting to figure out who was having success in ministering to victims of the sex-slave industry. I wrote my final project paper for the master of arts degree in religion from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School on how to create partnerships between

mission agencies in southeast Asia and the newly formed and incorporated not-for-profit agency that I named “Remember Nhu.” I am determined, with God’s help, to raise money and other resources to empower partners in SE Asia to help the victims and those at risk of the sextrade industry. In broad terms, “Remember Nhu” focuses on prevention and intervention,

identifying girls most at risk for a future in the sex trade industry, and providing them with housing, education, and vocational training in a Christ-centered environment. “Remember Nhu” is now a legally incorporated not-forprofit organization with a board of directors; a strategy based on research has been formulated to guide the efforts of “Remember Nhu;” and fund-raising has

begun in earnest. Those interested in learning more about “Remember Nhu” may contact me at: carlr@affordableinsurance.us. I believe God used my song to Jesus, I Give You My Heart to benefit me. As I sang it throughout my week in Thailand, I became almost desperate to have the words come true in my life. They have, for God’s silence has been broken and I continue to hear God’s direction

as I obey His message to me, “Remember Nhu.” I want to close with the words of that song, and I pray you become desperate to have these words come true in your life as well.
