Ditchy kry nuwe tuiste Natalie Grobler

Submit faulty bills The electricity saga continues with Adriana Randall, DA spokesperson for finance, who is leading a campaign to have residents who have fallen into a dark pitfall of high electricity accounts, to find a way back into the light. “I have seen accounts where residents have been charged up to 71 days in advance. Incorporate this amount with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) rates’ increase and you have people who cannot pay and are stranded with no water and no electricity.” She told Rekord that she sees the advanced projections of the metro on accounts as irresponsible and unfair to residents. “The metro is no longer allowing residents to submit meter readings, residents do not get any service from the metro when they query their accounts and if they are unable to pay, the metro simply cuts the services. This is not effective management, it’s a hostage situation.” During a public meeting held last week to discuss the electricity account debacle, Randall admitted that the residents’ responses had been positive and she is determined to make the metro realise the seriousness of the situation. “I have received numerous accounts from residents across Pretoria. This is to show the metro that the complaints are not isolated incidences as they insist.” She further urged residents to make contact with their ward councillors to address their high electricity accounts. “Residents will be able to make arrangements with the metro to pay their accounts. Some simply can’t afford the full amount and we therefore urge residents to work with their ward councillors to have payment arrangements made.” Karen Meyer, DA councillor for Community Safety, said residents should consider prepaid meters as an alternative. “With prepaid electricity residents will be able to manage their consumption, however, the only way a prepaid meter will be installed is when all accounts with the metro has been settled,”

she warned. DA leader, Brandon Topham, stated that the metro had to seriously re-evaluate their customer service capabilities. He also said that in some cases the metro seemed to be willing to come to a workable solution, but that the capacity to do so was hampering their efforts. “Residents are frustrated and angry, the metro seems unfazed and simply expects residents to pay. I urge the metro to improve their consumer relations and thus their service delivery.” Rekord is still awaiting an explanation from the Tshwane Media Centre on why residents’ accounts were charged more than 31 days in advance and why residents are no longer allowed to send in their own metre readings. shocking demolished state of dilapidation that they constantly cause crashes and daily gridlock traffic. Calling a halt to their reinstatement as usable freeways is little short of insanity,” Dembovsky said. “There is a vast difference between calling a halt to planned tolling and calling a halt to the construction of roads, which have been demolished by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and its contractors.” Dembovsky also said that the minister should not resort to measures that may be seen as punishment tactics. “One of the most prevalent factors in road fatalities is poor engineering and if the minister thinks he can punish motorists for being angry with his and Sanral’s intent to profit from tolling freeways, he is mistaken.” He added that the answer to implementing and maintaining roads infrastructure in South Africa lies in the coming up with workable solutions that would benefit the public and from spending money collected from existing taxation and possibly even reasonable tolling on the roads infrastructure. “There is nothing wrong with saying: Minister Ndebele said all these processes, including a consultative process initiated by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, should be allowed to reach their logical conclusions to ensure that all parties concerned and their respective views are brought on board. Blackmailing motorists by leaving current road construction projects un finished, is completely unacceptable.” The JPSA has also warned that Ndebele and Sanral might open themselves to legal action from motorists. “The matter of tolls can be properly discussed and resolved. Failing this, Ndebele and Sanral are lining themselves up for legal action and possibly even criminal charges for destroying what roads were in place before the project started,” Dembovsky said.

The Minister of Transport, Sibusiso Ndebele, has called for an immediate halt to any further roadworks on Gauteng’s freeways until the toll issue has been resolved. Nedebele released a statement on October 23 saying that although the first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has delivered good road infrastructure, it was an expensive exercise that has drawn sharp critique from the public and that consultation is the only way forward. “All spheres of government should be part of a consultation process with all affected parties, consumers in the main. Good infrastructure is a necessity for a better future for our country, but this requirement must not leave our people even poorer,” said Ndebele. The Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) is accusing Ndebele of holding Gauteng motorists hostage after his statement to stop any further road maintenance works until the toll issue has been resolved. Howard Dembovsky, national chairman of the JPSA, said the organisation is shocked with what they describe as Ndebele’s lack of foresight. “The first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has not been completed yet, unless the first phase only included the N1 and R21 freeways. The N12 and N3 freeways in Johannesburg are in such a

President Jacob Zuma listens attentively as the process is explained to him at the new SABS labs.

New lab will help manufacturers A new state of the art South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) laboratory was opened in the leafy suburb of Groenkloof last week. President Jacob Zuma together with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, opened the lab. The laboratory provides testing, inspection and certification services for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, clothing and footwear products. The new laboratory will help South Afri-

can manufacturers meet local and international quality and safety requirements. SABS CEO, Dr Bonakele Mehlomakulu, was proud to announce the benefit of the new lab. “The new laboratory are a tremendous boost to our testing and product certification capabilities and exactly what we need to keep up with the needs of our economy. It will support our export sector and enhance requisite testing in the manufacturing sector,” he said.

The new facility puts the organisation in a stronger position to support industry development and facilitate economic growth through supporting its customers to become more agile and competitive in their respective market sectors. This also includes support for growth of the emerging small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) sector that need quality assurance service to supply larger corporations and government.

Traffic will literally come to a standstill in the Pretoria CBD as thousands of disgruntled youths will march to the Union Buildings on Thursday and Friday to make their voice heard about unemployment and free education for the youth. The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has set aside October 27 and 28 as the official dates to roll out mass action to strategic centres of power in South Africa. On Thursday ANCYL will lead mass action and protest to the Chamber of Mines to demand the nationalisation of mines and equal share in the country’s mineral resources. From the Chamber of Mines, ANCYL will lead a march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton to demand an equal share in the country’s wealth. The mass action will go to the Union Buildings for a night vigil, which will culminate in the handing over of a memorandum, demanding free education, the immediate abolishment of labour brokers, jobs for the youth, better housing and sanitation for informal settlement dwellers and access to water. According to the Tshwane head of Community Safety, General Daniel Manganye, the city is ready for the march. A final meeting with all the role players of the planned march will be held later this week. “We had several meetings, but I do not want to disclose anything at the moment,” said Manganye. Manganye told Rekord that traffic in the inner city will be affected but the Tshwane metro police will make sure that motorists do not suffer as a result of the planned march.

are the first in South Africa to be fitted with the Össur Power Knee. The motorised knee is a ‘smart’ prosthetic limb with the ability to recognise and memorise its user’s walking style while making real time adjustments based on changes in speed, terrain and stride. Schutte (19) an above-knee amputee, who won a bronze medal in the F42 javelin event at the International Paralympic Committee World Championships held in New Zealand, was fitted with the Power Knee technology for the first time on October 14. “After only two days, I was able to shift and share the weight that I usually put on my below-knee side, or good leg, to the above-knee side. I don’t tire as fast as I did previously,” Schutte said. Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics is seen as the market leader specialising in advanced prosthetics and bionics in South Africa. “We are honoured to be the first in South Africa to offer the Össur Power Knee as well as similar bionic technology to our clients. Our aim is to assist prosthetic users to get back to leading normal, happy and physically active lives,” Johan Snyders, CEO of Icexpress said. According to Snyders the Össur Power Knee and other advances made in prosthetic technology make it even more realistic for persons with amputations to live their lives without limitations.

Seek shelter during swelter There are important precautions to take when the mercury lingers in the thirties Suzette van Huyssteen

School has second largest Red Gum tree in Gauteng The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery recently declared the massive 34 meter tall Red Gum tree the second largest tree of its kind in the Gauteng area. Waterkloof Primary School is the home ground for this huge tree. The crown diameter of the tree is 34m and the trunk circumference is about 6,8m. According to Izak van der Merwe from the department, the tree is 80 years or older. The tree has also been nominated as a Champion Tree and will be up against other trees to compete for the title for 2011.

The first heat wave of summer is upon Pretoria. The mercury will be lingering in the thirties until Saturday when temperatures will start to drop. According to the South African Weather Service, the high temperatures will coincide with partly cloudy conditions with possible showers and thundershowers. According to Werner Vermaak from ER24, there are important precautions to consider on how to prevent heat exhaustion and how to deal with heat related emergencies. “Stay well hydrated and stay out of the direct sun during midday and to ensure that appropriate clothing and sun cream are worn when outside. If one partakes in outdoor activities, make sure that you have adequate resting sessions and keep hydrated at all times and do not consume excessive amounts of alcohol,” Vermaak said. With regards to children, residents must ensure there is appropriate adult supervision when children are swimming.

“Babies and the elderly are more likely to suffer from heatstroke due to inadequate thermal regulation systems, so ensure that they are monitored closely during this time. “It is also important that children or animals are not left in a vehicle with the windows closed,” Vermaak said. According to Vermaak, people often focus their attention on other humans, but should also keep their pets in mind. “Ensure they have a cool place to rest and enough clean water,” Vermaak said. According to ER24 during severe heatstroke or exhaustion the following signs or symptoms may be noticed: severe headache, weakness or disorientation, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps or severe thirst. “It is important that a person presenting these signs and symptoms is closely monitored as it could result in the patient losing consciousness or having seizures, which could result in death. “Persisting signs and symptoms of any of the above may need immediate medical attention. Rather seek help immediately,” Vermaak said.

Navrae: SANBS by 0800-11-9031.

Councillor Bronwynn Engelbrecht at the Star of Africa Boutique Hotel where alleged loud parties were held.

Residents obtain urgent high court ruling against parties The residential suburb of Waterkloof is known for its peacefulness, its big green lawns, majestic views, rolling koppies and upmarket lifestyle. It seems Waterkloof is also becoming the party location of choice, with residents in Plough Street resorting to legal action to act against the owners of a new boutique hotel. It was revealed to Rekord last week that an urgent high court ruling was granted in favour of Plough Street residents, effectively prohibiting the selling of any alcohol or staying over of clients at the Star of Africa Boutique Hotel. The application was granted after residents approached the high court in an attempt to stop any further loud partying at the hotel, because Tshwane metro police officers were unable to enforce the bylaws regarding excessive noise. On September 2, 3 and 16 the hotel apparently hosted three parties with strobe lights, booming speakers, sold alcohol and continued with the noise until the early hours of the morning. According to neighbours, the metro police did little else but share a joke with the guards at the gate when residents contacted the Tshwane Bylaw Enforcement Centre. Ward councillor Bronwynn Engelbrecht joined the residents in an attempt to contact the metro police to complain about the pounding music. “I received call after call

from residents complaining about the noise. Residents showed me footage of metro police officers responding to a call on the Friday night and then seemingly sharing a joke. After their visit there were no noise reduction and the partygoers danced the night away with no further interruptions from the authorities,” she said. Engelbrecht added that she also registered a complaint with the metro’s customer complaints system via e-mail. Seven days later, she received a call from a metro officer telling her that he was just at the premises she reported, but there was no party and no noise. “I thought it was a joke that seven days later, the metro police reacted to the urgent complaint. I dare say, that’s dedication.” Engelbrecht then contacted the head of the metro police department but has to date not received any replies to why an urgent complaint was reacted to only seven days later. “This type of conduct from a bylaw enforcment agency is unacceptable. If there is a problem with resources, staff or vehicles, they must communicate this and empower their officers to be able to do their work, not just when it comes to traffic.” On September 16 residents apparently contacted Engelbrecht again about noise coming from the hotel and again no metro officers responded to the residents’ call for calm.

“The metro has had three opportunities to act, if not on noise complaints then certainly on the selling of alcohol without a licence. I understand that the hotel’s liquor licence and rezoning application to operate as a hotel is still pending, yet, there is no action from the metro police.” Engelbrecht said she found it shameful that residents have to resort to legal action to have bylaws enforced. Karen Stavler, owner of the Star of Africa Boutique Hotel, is of the opinion residents and the councillor are over reacting. “We are in the process of obtaining the appropriate documents and once we have those, this will be a fantastic hotel and only add value to the area,” she said. Alta Fourie of the metro police said it is common practice for metro police officers to respond to a noise complaint and warn the responsible parties that they are in violation of the disturbance of the peace bylaw. “If we then have to respond to the same complaint for a second time, the guilty party will be arrested for disturbance of the peace. This complaint can either be made with the metro police or the police,” she explained. Fourie also said that once a complaint has been made to the Bylaw Enforcement Centre the matter will be investigated. Enquiries: Tshwane Bylaw Enforcement Centre on 012-358-0070.

Sector 3 policing ready to serve The Brooklyn Community Policing Forum (CPF) and residents are working together to establish a safer community Ané Roux

At the helm of the newly reinstated sector 3 Brooklyn Community Policing Forum (CPF) based in Constantia Park, is Rudi Verheijen, a man with a clear mission - the safety of his community. “Sector 3 of the Brooklyn CPF is a community with around 18 000 households. We are far from Brooklyn police station, but the CPF is critical in fighting crime in the sector.” Verheijen said the community in Sector 3 uses different means to safeguard themselves. These include radio monitoring, street closures, access control and even private street patrols. “The sector is divided into five sub-sectors and for each sub-sector the security need is different, that is why community involvement is so important, to establish which method of community policing is most effective.” Verheijen is also of the opinion that private security companies are important but community members should become involved in the CPF. “I understand that the private security companies are important, I doubt however how many residents actually understand the role of their CPF. Residents should join their CPF, just give a little and reap the monumental rewards of co-ordinated and localised crime fighting.” Furthermore, Verheijen is pleased with the assistance he received from the Brooklyn police as sector 3 chief. “The ward Councillor Duncan Baker and the Brooklyn police support us tremendously, so we can’t argue about their involve-

ment. The problem is however that the station is 17km away. Garsfontein is closer, but Constantia Park does not fall under Garsfontein’s jurisdiction.” At the moment the majority of residents in Constantia Park make use of private security firms, radio contact systems, access control and even closed streets. Verheijen agrees with these methods of crime fighting, but urges more residents to join the sector’s CPF. “Constantia Park is located in die middle of the big entrances into the east of Pretoria, Garsfontein and Atterbury roads leading to the N1 freeway. Hans Strijdom Drive leads to the N4 freeway and Delmas Road to the R21 and even Johannesburg. As a community we need to regulate the movements in our sector.” He has such a regulator in mind. It’s called a JOC and it stands for Joint Operations Centre. “The plan is to allocate a localised centre where we can report suspicious activity and have a local response team on the scene within minutes. It will also serve as a base for monitoring suspicious vehicles and individuals. The centre will also serve as a database for day workers, who will be on a checklist, so residents can employ someone who has been screened before letting them into their homes.” Verheijen admits that the newly reinstated sector 3 CPF might not be the biggest, but certainly has loads of spunk, ideas and potential through its residents. Sector 3 CPF meets every second Tuesday. Enquiries: www.brooklyns3.co.za.

REKORD OOS VRYDAG 28 OKTOBER 2011

COMMENT

Police are on the alert after several incidences of xenophobic violence took place last week in Laudium, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve and Alexandra. Rumours are afloat that more violence is planned for this week. This calls to mind the terrible scenes of xenophobic violence we experienced in May 2008, leaving 70 people dead. Now as a new bout of protests has reared its head, South Africans are worried about how to avoid a repeat of the horrific violence. In the dictionary the term ‘xenophobia’ is defined as a hatred or fear of foreigners. It describes xenophobia as an ‘attitude’ rather than an ‘action’ or ‘practice’. For South Africa this definition needs to be rewritten. Here xenophobia can’t be separated from violence and physical abuse. This hostility against foreigners is explained in terms of limited resources. In the post-apartheid epoch a realisation that delivery is not immediate has meant that discontent and indignation are at their peak. People are more conscious of their deprivation than ever before. This is the ideal situation for a phenomenon like xenophobia to take root and flourish and to find a scapegoat. In November we will be celebrating the National Day of Tolerance and government and the Tshwane metro must commit themselves to listen and find solutions to people’s concerns and to condemn looting and attacks on foreigners under the guise of service delivery protests.

So iets sal oneties wees.

Brief verkort - Red

Compost scammers hit again

Johnny Mynhardt from Annlin writes: I was a victim of this scam and feel obligated to prevent this from happening to other residents. On Saturday afternoon a white pickup with a couple of compost bags on the back stopped in front of my house. The driver said he noticed that my grass had some grey patches and asked if they could fix it up with compost and fertilizer. I asked him the price and he said it was R85 for a 50kg bag and they will do all the work. I also asked how many bags would be needed and this is where the scam starts. He said that he was not sure but estimated two to five bags. We agreed and I tended to my dogs for five minutes. When I returned they were busy raking the fertilizer over the grass. In the corner lay a heap of empty fertilizer bags. I asked about the empty bags and he

Wat sien jy in die kruis? Ek doen verlede week personeelop leiding by ’n skool vir serebraal gestremdes.

said they had emptied 28 bags on my lawn. That supposedly happened in a period of five minutes. I checked the pick-up beforehand and noticed around ten bags full of compost, they obviously had additional empty bags in the vehicle and produced it while I was distracted. They charged me R2 380. Before I paid, I also requested a receipt and noticed the cell number of a previous client. I phoned the client, a resident from Garsfontein, and he immediately warned me that he was a victim of this scam just hours before. In his case they wanted him to pay for 40 bags. That amount of bags could not even fit on the vehicle. As I was phoning the local police, the men drove away. In the end, I only agreed to pay for ten bags, but I feel residents should be warned. From their receipt book it seems as if they are very successful and will obviously continue with this swindle.

Sensustiwiteit Pretoria is nou Blommeland. Soos in Liewe Heksie se Blommeland. Jakarandas blom in die strate. Dis Pers. Dis groen. Dis mooi. In geel gedrapeer. So kom Blommie een Vrydagaand, na ’n lang dag in Blommeland se velde, by die huis.

“Hoekom - is iemand weg?” vra Blommie verward. “Sorry for the inconvenience, ek was bietjie vertraag, daar is van my kabels gegaps.” “O nice, noudat julle almal hier is: Race?” “’n Yskas?” “Nee ons is poppe ons maak net of ons eet,” sê Heksie. “’n Badkamer?”

Visually impaired man gives traffic advice Ané Roux Imagine being blindfolded and then forced to face peak hour traffic, crossing some of the busiest intersections in Pretoria every morning and afternoon with your guide dog as your only SatNav. It is a walk few of us will complete successfully. For Shane Korff and his guide dog, Leroy, this scenario is their reality. Every morning they walk along 26th Street, then cross George Storrar Drive and Atterbury Road and back again in the afternoons. It’s a dangerous walk, but these two seem to have mastered the art of teamwork and patience. Shane has been living in Cecilia Street for the past four years and he works in the banking industry in the banking complex in Atterbury Road. “I live close to my work and walk to Spar, Brooklyn and even Menlyn. Leroy knows exactly where we’re going,” he laughed. Shane also said being visually impaired does not mean that a person can’t function. “I live by myself and I cook for myself. Being blind does not mean that I’m helpless.” When it comes to traffic and the motorists, Shane admits that Leroy gets a bit nervous because some motorists ignore traffic rules and pose a danger. “There is a big traffic circle on Selati Street and motorists seem to ignore the yield sign. They enter the circle at high speed and then hoot when other motorists cut in front of them. I can hear how fast things are happening and Leroy sits at the circle until it’s safe for us to cross. High speed drivers make it very dangerous for

pedestrians and extremely dangerous for Leroy and me.” He appeals to motorists to be responsible drivers. “I have not been stuck in a traffic jam for long. I’m sure its frustrating but lets just be patient, follow the rules of the road and lets all get home safely,” he said.

Dazzling divas determined to enjoy life Valeska Abreu Red hats and purple outfits, worn by women over the age of 50 is not a sight seen everyday and that is exactly why the Dazzling Red Hat Divas draw attention each time they go out. The Dazzling Red Hat Divas is a new chapter formed under the original Red Hat Society, that started in America in 1998. The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humour and fun. This is a platform where a group of women over the age of 50 come together and explore life with divine wine tastings, elegant dinners and even bowling. “We come together and do things to keep our spirits alive, we have fun and that is what counts,” said Marguerite Wills, Queen Razzel Dazzel of the Dazzling Red Hat Divas. According to Wills, the chapter gets together once a month. Each member gets a chance to plan a fun evening for the

women. “We do anything that is inte resting and fun, such as mosaic, movies or dinners. It’s really a nice opportunity to mix with other women and take a day out of your normal life,” said Susan van Dyk, known as the Contessa de la Bonita within the chapter. “We currently have 13 women in our chapter and invite more to join us,” said Wills. The Red Hat Society was started by Sue Ellen, in America, after she decided to give her friends a vintage red hat and a copy of the poem, Warning, by Jenny Joseph as birthday presents. The women then decided to go out for tea and wear purple coloured dresses that didn’t fit with their red hats to complete the poem’s image and that is how the society was born. Marguerite Wills, Queen Razzel Dazzel of the Dazzling Red Hat Divas, shares scones and tea with Contessa de la Bonita, Susan van Dyk.

Ouma las Gautrain-rit by 100 jaar se ervarings Natashia Hudson

“My geheim vir ’n gesonder leefstyl? Dit is my geheim.” Ag nee, ek sit nou so lekker.”

l Experts believe that planning for a longer, healthier life is no longer an option in the 21st century. According to a report published by Grey Advertising and Sweeney Research, babies born between 1946 and 1964 are still rewriting the rule book on how to live out their golden years, often planning a second or ‘encore career’. Carol Weaving, top South African marketer and managing director of Thebe Exhibitions and Projects, said the market is responding to the reality, as retired citizens have significant buying power and are an economic force in their own right. Research conducted by the University of Cape Town’s Unilever Institute and their research partner Synovate, estimates that 1,9 million South Africans older than 40 years and classified between the living standards measure of seven to ten have a combined income of R300-billion. The first South African retirement expo, presented by Century Property Developments, will be held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg from October 28 to 30. On October 29 Grey Power will present a half-day seminar titled Creating ageing for seniors, which will include strategies for wellness and longevity to retired citizens. Visitors to the expo will receive practical tips and advice on aspects such as discount and benefits for retirees. Tickets are available at Computicket or at the expo. l Xtreme Buddies is ’n organisasie wat dwelmrehabilitasienasorg doen en ondersteuning aan ouers van dwelmverslaafdes bied. Die opbrengs van die aand gaan gebruik word vir voorkomingsprojekte rondom dwelmgebruik. l Friends of the Rail and the Pretoria Old Motor Car club will come together to give residents of Pretoria the first Heritage Cars and Trains day on October 30. It promises to be a fun day at the Hermanstad steam train depot in Michaelson Street, Hermanstad, with veteran cars dating back to 1920 and an operating steam locomotive on display. There will also be jumping castles, horse rides, face painting, quad bikes for the children and live music for the whole family. The entrance fee includes a short shuttle on the steam train and picnic facilities with a fire for a braai. The entrance fee does not include the longer two-hour ride on the Tshwane Explorer. Enquiries: Arno on 082-293-4616 or www. friendsoftheraiil.com. l Die Landboukorrelsfeesdag word 29 Oktober by die Cullinan-boereunie se terrein gehou. Vroegtydige bespreking is noodsaaklik. Navrae: Dr. Don Roos by 012-803-1632.

Complete Bible read in marathon session Suzette van Huyssteen The first of its kind to ever take place in South Africa, let alone Pretoria, was the Bible Reading Marathon. The complete Bible was read in less than a week. This was what the Charisma Assembly Church in Thaba Tswane recently challenged their congregation and community with. The scenario was to read the Bible aloud from the pulpit in the church, starting from Genesis 1:1 and to carry on through the night and end with Revelations.

Every participant had a 15 minute slot in which they read the Bible. Throughout the whole process there were monitors to assist the people with their reading times. There was an English and an Afrikaans Bible to choose from. Everyone was welcome to join in the non-stop reading of the Bible from cover to cover. “We invite other communities to follow in our footsteps as it was a wonderful spiritual experience and journey. We read for God and to God all the glory,” Ina van Schalkwyk of the Charisma Assembly Church said.

Michael Selekane with one of his paintings. Selekane’s star is on the rise as far as art is concerned.

Social issues inspire artist Gavin Emmanuel He is soft-spoken and has a smile that lights up the room and once you mention the word art, Michael Selekane’s eyes start to light up. Rekord caught up with Selekane at the Ifa Lethu offices in Groenkloof. “I love the smell of oil on canvass,” said Selekane as he ushers Rekord into a boardroom at the Ifa Lethu offices which is filled with Selekane’s artwork. Selekane was born in a tiny village in Mpumalanga in 1986 and

his first encounter with art came during his primary school years. “There was an art class in primary school and I went to that class as a way of dodging other classes, because most of the time nothing was done in that class,” said Selekane. As time went on the class became operational and held an art competition, which he was selected for. “I had a teacher who spotted the talent in me and supplied me with art materials,” added Selekane. The highlight of his career

came in 2007 after completing matric. Selekane joined Tshwaraganang Art School in Mabopane. “The school exposed me to various forms of visual art and it was then that I realised I had fallen in love with the oil painting medium,” said Selekane. During the same year Selekane won the Ifa Lethu art prize, which cemented his conviction to seek advanced training in art. Social and political issues inspire most of Selekane’s paintings. Selekane exhibited at Grahamstown Art Festival.

Rani Moonsamy, Nadene Naicker and Stefan Nortjé, took on the Bible Reading Marathon of the Charisma Assembly Church in Thaba Tswane. Each of them read from the Bible during a 15 minute slot.

Musique Mosaique se repertoire is

uiteenlopend en sluit A Cappella asook begeleide werke in.

koorafdeling aangewys is. Kaartjies is by Computicket beskikbaar. A pilgrimage is a journey made to a place as a gesture of respect. With this in mind, five musicians convened earlier this year to find out exactly where that place was. Their subject matter was an artist who filled his 70 years on earth with a staggering amount of music. The Man in Black was there for the birth of Rockabilly in the 1950’s, sharing the stage with the likes of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and others. He soldiered on for another five decades, the eternal rebel, forever at odds with the corporate record industry and other authoritative figures. The eighties were not exactly kind to him, but his American recordings project brought him back to prominence and served as a fitting farewell for a man who touched many a life. Johnny Cash, as his famous song suggests, did indeed stand up for the unlucky, the reckless ones, the poor and the beaten down. While the show features some of his later work, the Johnny Cash Pilgrimage felt that the bulk of the performance should consist of the now signature Tennessee Threesound, that wonderful music most famously documented on the Live at Folsom Prison album. This period featured songs

The Johnny Cash Pilgrimage will be performed at Steak ’n Ale on October 28, from 19:30.

about love, hardship, hope, joy, trains, prisoners, cowboys, good and bad women and of course the odd serious crime and the inevitable consequence of such actions. All the members of the band are Johnny Cash fans and consider the show to be a labour of love. A lot of effort has gone into recreating that magical era and the sound that influenced many a musical journey, including their own. The 90-minute set includes highlights that will please both the casual fan and Cash connoisseurs. Therefore, whether you saw the movie and fell in love with Ring of Fire or discovered The wreck of the old 97 in your parent’s record collection, the band guarantees a good night out on the dance floor. The journey ends when everyone feels better about themselves. Was that not the great man’s

intention all along? Andy Evans and Brixton Barnard supply the no nonsense solid backbeat on drums and bass while Pat Plank and Erika Strydom compliment each other’s styles with some brilliant guitar work. Strydom also fills the shoes of the legendary June Carter. Stepping up to the mike is Gert Barnard, a man who has lived and breathed Johnny Cash for most of his life. He bears a striking resemblance to the man in question. The Johnny Cash Pilgrimage tours the country extensively over the next year and will soon be in Pretoria. It will be performed at Steak ’n Ale on October 28 from 19:30. Enquiries: Sean Manson or Grant Bubb on 012-664-5155.

Staged readings address social issues In celebration of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) History month, the month-long annual observance of LGBT history, gay rights and related civil rights movements, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Artscape New Writing Programme proudly presents Reading Gay. This is a season of staged readings of new multi award winning South African gay plays from October 26 to 30. These plays feature in SA Gay Plays compiled by Robin Malan and published through his independent press, Junkets Publisher. “The social issues addressed in the collection include more than just LGBT themes,” said Grace Meadows, who is the manager of performing arts at UJ and the producer of the season of readings. Sexual awakening, issues of identity and abandonment are interlaced with the added grit of revenge, passion and sex. Most important of all is the work is young, fresh and compelling,” she added. The director of Reading Gay is Alby Michaels, who has pulled together a formidable team of new young directors, UJ students, UJ alumni and professional guest performers to tackle the plays. The readings start on October 26 at 19:30 with Cape Town’s Jade Bowers directing The Boy Who Fell from the Roof (2007) by Juliet Jenkin. This is a heartfelt story about a boy, Simon, who with his best friend Georgina, falls into the cold bath water of homosexuality, race, love, death and growing up in contemporary Cape Town.

The Boy Who Fell from the Roof by Juliet Jenkin will be one of the plays performed at this year’s Reading Gay.

On October 27 at 19:30 the UJ Arts Academy alumnus, Motlatji Ditodi, directs Gideon van Eeden’s Myth of Andrew & Jo (2010), which is the last of the plays in the collection that toured to Dublin. A contemporary tale of a gay couple, a lesbian couple and a pregnancy, how will they live, how will they love and how will they laugh? Then on October 28 at 19:30 the Musical Theatre stars Neels Clasen, in Ashraf Johaardien’s Happy Endings Are Extra, (2006), which was the first of the plays in the collection to be invited to Dublin. A provocative story of love and betrayal unravels as one man comes to terms with the life he’s leading and the one he’s left behind. On October 29 at 19:30 Alby Micheals, who is the resident director of the UJ Arts Academy, takes on Dalliances (2008) by Pieter Jacobs. Leo and Janet are friends. Ken is involved with

Andy. When Ken meets Leo and make out in a lift the lives of these four characters intersect with extraordinary results. Jacobs scooped the KKNK Nagtegaal debut prize for his Afrikaans play Plofstof earlier this year. Finally on October 30 at 16:00 television personality, Jacques Bessenger, who plays Renier in Erfsondes 2 on SABC2, directs the lesbian play Careful (2009) by the late Fiona Coyne. Careful was her last play. It is about women and lesbianism, about friendship and fear, or fear and friendship and being willing to take the risk to care, both about oneself and others. Readings are each on for one night only at the Con Cowan Theatre located at UJ’s Bunting Road campus, adjacent to the SABC in Auckland Park. Tickets are available at Computicket. Season tickets for all five plays are available from the UJ Arts Centre on the Kingsway campus. Enquiries: 011-559-3058.

Celebrating Paul Kruger’s birthday Natashia Hudson

Deputy Director of the Ditsong Kruger Museum, Talita Fourie and architects Mathebe Aphane, Inge Wessels and Engela White.

On October 10 the Ditsong Kruger Museum celebrated the birth of Paul Kruger at a social event held at the Kruger House Garden in Church Street West. Kruger, who became the first president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republick (later Transvaal), was born on October 10, 1825 at Vaalbank farm. The event was held to commemorate Kruger’s date of birth and to highlight the importance of South Africa’s history and heritage. Talitha Fourie, deputy director of the museum, said Kruger might not have been perfect but was a great leader and a man of principle.

“We celebrate his birthday to think about our history. It is part and parcel of us and will also determine our future.” The event was not only held to celebrate Kruger’s birthday, but also to inform residents about the Kruger House’s renovation project that is currently underway. The museum’s aim is to work towards restoring the Kruger House for all to enjoy. Kruger Day was celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa from 1952 until 1993 but ceased being a public holiday when the new Public Holiday Act of 1994 replaced the Public Holiday Act of 1952. Every year citizens of South Africa are allowed free entry to the museum on October 10.

On the wings of a silver bird for a day Natashia Hudson The joy was evident among a group of young amputees who each got the opportunity to fly in a Cessna 172 aircraft and a Robinson R44 helicopter at the Wonderboom Airport during the recent Give a Kid Wings event. The children couldn’t contain their excitement as the day, which included aircraft trips and a display by the Wonderboom fire brigade, unfolded. The aim of the event, which was hosted by the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund, Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics and the Pretoria Flying School, was to inspire disabled children and to provide them with an unforgettable and fun-filled day. Johan Snyders and Werner Nel dreamed up the concept together.

A fireman in full uniform greets the children during the fire brigade’s demonstration.

Snyders, the CEO of Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics, founded the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund after seeing the value that prosthetics can add to a disabled child’s life. The fund provides quality prosthetics to less fortunate children free of charge. “We were wondering what we could do to make a difference. With prosthetics, the children are not disabled, they are simply less abled.” Nel (22), who lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident two years ago and is in the process of completing his commercial pilot’s licence, understands what Snyders is talking about. “When I received my prosthetic leg I realised there was no reason why I could not still achieve my goal of becoming a commercial pilot. Snyders

started Jumping Kids through which he wants to equip disabled children to allow them to become more mobile. Together we want to give these children the opportunity to ‘fly’ in every sense of the word.” The Jumping Kids Fund, that relies on sponsorships and donations from public and private organisations, aims to help young amputees to follow their dreams and achieve their goals. Nel feels strongly that these children’s dreams should not become restricted simply because of a disability. “Those who want to become pilots should see that even that is possible.” It is estimated that one out of 13 people in South Africa, of which less than 1% is currently employed, has a physical disability.

It’s smiles all around after a scenic flight over the Roodeplaat Dam and surrounding area. At the back sits one of the Hope School housemothers, Miriam Mabitsele, with her arms around Sandile Mthembu. In the front is Simphiwe Nkumane with pilot Glen Frost.

Nhlahla Nyatsane sits next to pilot Werner Nel and gives a big thumbs-up sign after landing.

Matt Stern as die geharde korpo raal Kotzé.

volstaan.”

Edward Jardim hands over his latest war documentary DVD, Attack on Cassinga, to Richard Henry. Henry is the curator of the Ditsong National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg.

Documentary sheds light on the border war Natashia Hudson

Edward Jardim, a Pretoria based videographer with a passion for history, has recently produced his second video documentary, Assault on Cassinga, on the controversial airborne attack that took place on May 4, 1978 at Cassinga during the Angolan Border War. This DVD is a follow-up on the documentary, Attack on Cassinga, which was also produced by Jardim and released in 2009. Jardim, who received no major funding from any company and handled all the creative processes himself, spent most of his spare time during the last two years putting his latest war documentary together. The video documentary revolves around the first fullscale airborne attack that the South African Defence Force carried out. The target of the air raid was a South West African People’s Organisation (Swapo) base in Cassinga, Angola. The 60-minute documentary features exclusive interviews with Lieutenant General Denis Earp (former chief of the South

African Airforce 1984-1988) and Lieutenant General Jannie Geldenhuys (former chief of the South African Airforce 1986-1990). It also features exclusive interviews with helicopter pilot, Brigadier General John Church and fighter pilots, Major Gene ral MJ du Plessis and Lieute nant Colonel Dries Marais. The DVD provides a detailed account on the role that the South African Airforce played during the dramatic attack. According to Jardim he did not want to become entangled in the controversy and politics surrounding the battle that took place that day, (Swapo claimed the site targeted by the South African Airforce was a refugee camp), but wanted to give soldiers the opportunity to tell their stories. He said he would love to make a third documentary as told from Swapo’s perspective, but is having difficulty getting hold of the right people. Jardim feels there is currently a shortage of South African war video documentaries and hopes that his video documentaries can help to fill this gap.

School crowned as quiz champions

21 top schools competed for the coveted title but there could only be one winner

Students actively involved in campaign The University of Pretoria’s Olienhout students and StopRhinoPoaching.com teamed up with Jacaranda 94.2 to raise money for rhino protection, which has become a major issue in South Africa. In commemoration of World Rhino Day, R15 000 was raised that will be used towards training field rangers in wildlife parks. Here are some men from the Olienhout residence with Jenny Griesel (left) and Elise de Villiers, the founder of StopRhinoPoaching.com.

Varsity College Pretoria hosted its fourth annual School Quiz recently, at Pretoria Boys High School. A total of 21 of Pretoria’s top schools including Abbotts College, Hillview High School, Hoërskool Oos-Moot, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Pretoria High School for Girls entered teams. Nicole Flint, former Miss South Africa, hosted the event that consisted of questions from seven categories including history, sport and general knowledge. As the quiz started out, the various teams did extremely well, but the competition soon became stiff during the second and third round. The top teams were from Crawford College, Hoërskool Montana, Pretoria Boys High School and Hoërskool Waterkloof.

Unfortunately, only one team could receive the stunning Albert Einstein School Quiz floating trophy. Crawford College was crowned the champions for the Varsity College Pretoria School Quiz competition, taking home a cash prize of R1 000 per team member and a full two-year Varsity College bursary. Sutherland High School took second place, banking a cash prize of R500 per team member and a full one-year Varsity College bursary. In third place was Pretoria Boys High School, taking home a cash prize of R250 per team member and a full oneyear Varsity College bursary. The event was held to allow the pupils to participate in an event that was both fun and educational.

The school once again excelled and for the second time in the past four years, walked away as the top school. The schools affiliated to PEPSAA are divided into three leagues according to their performances in athletics. La Montagne proved their mettle by winning the A-league by 45 points. Emerging leaders receive practical expert guidance One hundred and forty future leaders from the country’s top schools gathered in Pretoria for three days of powerful leadership inspiration. Grade 11 learners were privileged to attend this event at the iLead conference, held at St Albans College in Pretoria recently. Top Billing’s charismatic Dr Michael Mol and Talk Radio 702 DJ and journalist, David O’Sullivan, were part of this event. Varsity College and St Albans College collaborated to host this initiative to guide pupils who are about to take up leadership positions within their schools. These pupils could possibly become the leaders and captains of industry in their chosen careers, so it is important that they are equipped with the skills to do this in an inspired and informed way. The conference was an intense mix of talks and workshop based learning sessions and live scena rios. Mol spoke to the learners about strengths-based leadership, focusing on your own and others’ strengths and capitalising on these. Eight speakers gave their perspectives on different aspects of leadership, such as that of the African context, self-leadership, courageous leadership and the

challenges of leadership. Pupils were divided into mixed groups from the various schools and had to make the leap between listening to someone speak about a leadership concept and putting it into action with a task. Groups also had to show or discuss how

they would implement the concept within their schools. As part of one of the tasks, the World Chef Conference, pupils were required to find ingredients and cook a chicken without a kitchen. Many fires later, gourmet chicken was enjoyed.

In line with Peugeot’s range enhancement and development strategy, the 4008 will initially be launched in the international market, representing 70% of its sales. With its distinctive, stylish appearance and its 4x4 SUV features, the 4008 is a modern response to the needs of all-terrain vehicle customers, in a very prominent market segment. The 4008 is an ideal response to the changes in these markets. It is a competitive vehicle serving Peugeot’s ambition in the international market. Presented at a world premiere at the 2012 Geneva Motor show, the 4008 will go on sale initially in international markets from the second quarter of 2012. In China it is the attraction of the vehicle’s status that is sought after, while in Europe it fulfils the desire for distinctive multi-purpose vehicles, compact and with an environmental impact comparable to that of a conventional saloon. With this new 4x4 SUV, Peugeot completes its range of vehicles suited to the various expectations of all-terrain customers. With its strong personality for the

international destination, the 4008 is aimed both at customers who already own an allterrain vehicle and at those looking for an alternative to saloons or MPVs, a vehicle synonymous with leisure. Born of the PSA Mitsubishi partnership, the 4008 naturally has a strong Peugeot identity. The new stylistic codes of the marque are judiciously adapted, such as the floating grill and the feline design of the lamp units with visual signature. At the front there is a line of LED daylight running lamps that complement the headlamps and three red claws sculpted rear the lamps. The off-road character has been emphasised by a vertical design of grill, inclusion of the body sill protectors and prominent wheel arch protection trims. This is to accommodate large wheels enhanced by the sophisticated design of the wheel rims. The almost horizontal bonnet grooves and the style line, which extend to the rear wing where it descend again crossing the lamp, is a distinctive feature and appear to hollow out along the body’s side, accentuating the strong and dynamic

aspects of the 4008. The work carried out by the design team, down to the smallest detail, gives the 4008 a high-class elegance in line with its positioning. Its features and its equipment, like the Open and Go system 18’’ alloy wheels, a touch screen navigation system and reversing camera, are a result of the brand’s modern and upmarket version of all-terrain vehicles. These characteristics and its exterior dimensions, 4,34m long, 1,80m wide with a height of 1,63m, make the 4008 particularly versatile. Its compactness, a promise of true manoeuvrability and its occupant space make it a vehicle suitable for everyday use, including in town and for leisure journeys or holidays. With the four-wheel drive version, the driver can select three transmission modes: two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and locking of the four-wheel drive. In the two four-wheel drive modes, 4WD and lock, the distribution of the torque between the front and the rear is managed electronically. In lock mode, the four-wheel drive transmission becomes permanent, with even greater distribution of torque to the rear wheels. There will be four engines, Petrol: 1.61 85kW (116hp) / 152Nm five-speed manual. 2.01 113kW (150hp) / 198Nm five-speed manual or CVT. McLaren breaks the law in 3,3 seconds Robert Mabusela With Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele’s proposed speed limit of 100km/h, one could be breaking the law within 3,3 seconds if you drive the new McLaren MP4-12c. This rear engine lightweight McLaren promises to be the “first genuine no compromise sportscar,” according to McLaren brochures at the Johannesburg International Motor Show last week. With the given 0-100km/h figure the McLaren team is just being modest. The MP4-12c deserves to be called a supercar, as 200km/h is reached in 9,8 seconds or 8,9 if the car is fitted with Corsa tyres, which will play an essential role in reaching the top speed of 330km/h a bit faster. Supercar manufacturers are using their gym memberships to make sure that weight shedding is at the top of their workout programme. Unnecessary weight is lost as excessive weight hinders the achievement of maximum performance. Not only did the acceleration improve, but other performance improvements include braking 100 to 0km/h in a distance of 30,5m, handling and fuel efficiency releasing only 279g/km, which just might save you from having to pay CO² emission tax. The whole weight shedding is made possible by using a carbon fibre MonoCell structure. This means the McLaren gets a one piece lightweight carbon

fibre chassis with rear and front aluminium frames as opposed to carbon fibre used in the Audi R8 GT. Fuel figures stand at 11,7l per 100km, releasing only 279g/km of CO². The McLaren is powered by a 3,8l V8 engine that boasts 441kw/ h, with torque outputs of 600Nm at 3 000rpm right up to 7 000rpm. The engine will be put up against German rivals Audi R8 GT, Porsche 911 Turbo PDK and Japanese Godzilla Nissan Skyline GT-R, not forgetting the Godzilla killer Lexus LFA, as seen on YouTube. All rivals have between 368kW (Porsche 911 Turbo PDK) to 441kW (McLaren MP4-12c). According to specs, the McLaren is the most favourable with the fastest 0 to 100 in 3,3 seconds, that is if you are rolling on standard tyres. Overall, the McLaren was smartly built, with high mounted exhausts and every single component designed from scratch. Nothing was considered good enough to be carried over from an existing McLaren. This car was certainly the highlight of high performance cars featured at the show.

The McLaren MP4-12c, featured at the Johannesburg International Motor Show, produces an impressive 441kW achieving 0 to 100km/h in 3,3 seconds.

Tweedens, sê Jacobs, is lenings nou goedkoop.

Residents can show their support for Rekord’s Jeans 5000 project by visiting The Grove Mall until October 28 to donate old or new denims for the Rekord Charity Fund. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Valley College. Showing their support are celebs (in front) Angelique Gerber, Eagan Williamson and Izak Davel. At the back are Loui Fish, Gretha Wiid and Esti.

It’s all in the jeans Denims are a fashion statement in most cupboards, but many underprivileged adults and children do not have this luxury and therefore Rekord, together with The Grove Mall, will be hosting a Denim Drive promotion during October in aid of charity. Collecting denims for charity is Rekord’s brainchild and they aim to collect more than 5 000 pieces of clothing during October to December. The Grove Mall, who proudly associates themselves with an array of community projects, grasped the opportunity to host the Denim Drive promotion in conjunction with the newspaper. Schools in the area have been contacted to participate and to open their heart and cupboards by donating denim clothing. Tyger Valley College, one of the schools participating, is very excited about the project and hopes to make a difference within the community. The Grove Mall has also partnered with the local radio station, Impact Radio. “Impact Radio and The Grove Mall have done several community projects together, so it was natural contacting them to be a

part of an important promotion such as the Denim Drive,” said Leanne Nell, marketing manager of The Grove Mall. She said they are extremely dedicated to projects such as the Denim Drive promotion and urge businesses as well as their shoppers to open their hearts and donate any unwanted denim clothing in good condition. Residents still have an opportunity to donate their denims until October 28 at various collection bins within the mall. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Valley College. The contestants have been carefully selected and will be judged on beauty from within, displaying friendliness, caring and considerate traits, a natural beauty and if she is charity oriented and driven. Miss Charity will have to commit to initiate and involve herself further in charity drives, with a minimum of ten hours in 2012, which must include evidence of her involvement. Somebody once said education is what remains with a person when he has forgotten everything he was taught. Eduplex, an inclusive mainstream parallel medium school consisting of a pre-, primary and high school, emphasises this saying in more than one way. What makes the school unique is the inclusion of a number of deaf pupils alongside their hearing peers. The emphasis on spoken language ensures that all children reach a level of linguistic maturity that lays a firm foundation for literacy and academic success. The principal, Jannie de Goede, explained that all their pupils are part of a holistic curriculum that keeps up with the latest educational practices, information and technology, allowing the development of both skills and creativity during the school day. A wide range of sport and culture activities compliment this practice. De Goede added that the school understands the concept, which states that not all individuals learn in the same way and that each of Eduplex’s pupils have goals in life that are unique to them. This is why Eduplex, in association with a professional team, nurtures each pupil to reach his or her full potential. This year saw the

start of grade 8 in Eduplex’s high school and this will be followed by grade 9 in January 2012. Local air pistol shooters compete in Africa champs

Protea colours for fitness athletes

Two local sportsmen were part of a team consisting of three air pistol shots and their manager, who flew to Egypt recently for the Africa Shooting Championships. Francois van Tonder from Pretoria, Michael de Nysschen from Bloemfontein, Carel Smit from Randfontein and their manager, Nico Rautenbach from Pretoria, will represent South Africa at this

event. Van Tonder is the most experienced shooter and has participated internationally for a number of years and he achieved many accolades. The group hopes to achieve a team award and possibly individual medals also. Teams from all over the continent will participate in the Africa

Shooting Championships. All participants will endeavour to secure qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London by achieving a quota place. The respective members compete regularly in all provincial championships annually. Enquiries: The South African Pistol Association on 012-5432786.

It has been an incredible year for local fitness, bikini and body fitness athletes as far as the Ladies World Championships is concerned. The standard and selection process was strict and a nail-biting process. Finally six girls were selected to represent South Africa. They were Olivia Vaughen (bikini division), Tammy Jackson (bikini division), Leonie van Jaarsveld (body fitness), Nina Richter (body fitness tall class), Michelle Price (body fitness) and Louise van der Nat (body fitness short class). With the International Federation of Body Builders (IFBB) recognition to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) this year, this is the first IFBB team to wear the official green and gold Protea colours. The three local girls in the team are from left Nina Richter, Louise van der Nat and Michelle Price.

Navrae: Henry van Wyk by 083-4669016.

Junior Bulle in eindstryd Koos Venter

Foto’s: GB Jordaan
