W
ith the weather finally making a turn for the better, and babies on the ground it’s finally starting to feel like spring! Show season is now well underway, Reining Alberta has run three Branch shows with another running this weekend. We’d like to take a moment to welcome all our new Reining Alberta members and everyone who is entering the show pen for the first time. It’s great to see so many new faces at our shows!

We are eagerly awaiting Spring Classic which is only five days away. It’s shaping up to be a great show - and our biggest ever Classic! We’ve had over 185 horses and riders enter, and have 145 Ring Smart entries!!! This year we would like to welcome some new faces at the show office, Kathie McKenzie as Show Secretary, and Leslie Noble-McCleave as Show Manager. Please join us in welcoming these two great ladies! And be sure to stop by and introduce yourself if you haven’t

Trainers Corner With Austin Seelhof
How to determine what speed you should show your horse in the spin
H
ow I decide what speed I show my horse’s spins at depends a lot on knowing my horse and how they warmed up. Spins are one of the most time consuming maneuvers to train, so many things can go wrong, and penalties are easy to accumulate. Before I leave from home I take note of how my horse is turning around and what speed they are comfortable at, that way when I get to the show I know what I can expect from my horse. Judges are looking for a horse that has a stationary inside hind leg, good cadence, finesse, a willing attitude, smoothness, and speed. When I am warming up my horse I want to find the speed that my horse shows all of these features without losing any of them. The other thing I have to find is the ‘sweet’ shut off stop, as in when I need to ask my horse to stop turning to prevent an over turn or under turn penalty. Now when I am finally showing my turn in the pen I always try to be as subtle with my cues as possible, I do not want my horse to jump in the spin, lean on my leg, or pin its ears. To speed up my horse I will use my voice, my leg and my neck rein. If my horse tries to get faster than they are capable then I may try to relax and release my breath, or even pick my hand up slowly and try to gather my horse. Austin started reining as a youth and rookie, and started riding open at age 18. He worked for Brad Giesbrecht of Pilot Point, TX at Sterling Ranch and Green Valley Ranch; and started training out of Lauder Ranch in Oct of 2011.

R
eining Alberta’s first NRHyA Regional Clinic wrapped up on May 4 at Prairie Mountain Ranch, and we have to say we couldn’t have been happier with the experience!
Ruben was a true pleasure to work with, and an amazing clinician. He was really able to give all our participants individual time and help. Gave excellent advice and instruction, and over all everyone seemed to have such a great time! We unfortunately had some lousy weather and road conditions to deal with, so thank you to all of those who braved on and came out to support this event! We had 11 riders on Saturday, and 14 on Sunday. As well as many spectators who came out to learn. The tally is still coming in, but we estimate that we were able to raise over $1,500 for the NRHA & Reining Alberta Youth development programs. So thank you to all of you who came out and supported this clinic! It’s always great to see so much support for our youth riders - many of whom were able to attend as well! As this was a first for us there were a few bumps and some learning, but overall it was such a great experience. We look forward to applying to host another event down the road, and continuing to partner with the NRHA on more of these great events!

Spring Classic
S
pring Classic is just a few days away now and we hope you are as excited as we are! We just thought we’d post a few last minute tips and reminders.
» Stall maps will be posted at the show - please check on the door by the show office (in the Agricenter), a map will also be posted at each barn. » Ring Smart bookings will be posted online by Tuesday night at the latest. They will also be posted on the back wall of the show pen. » White Trash Reiners is throwing a Draw Party on Friday night. This is going to be a lot of fun, so please grab some friends and stop by for some pizza and have a great time! The doors will open at 5pm, pizza to arrive at 6:30pm. The Draw Party will be held in the meeting room attached to the show pen. Please note: the arena will be closed during the draw party. » Show packages & Draw Sheets will be available on arrival at the show » Post entries will close two hours before scheduled classes except for the first class of the day which will close at 6pm the day BEFORE the scheduled class. $50 late fee will be applied to all classes except for Aged Category classes where it will be 35% of the entry fee. » HD2 Sports is our photographer & videographer at all our Classic shows in 2014 so please contact Dave at the show (or after) if you would like to order photos or videos of your runs. Be sure to pop by the wash bay in the agricenter after your run for a delay feed where you can review your run right after your class! » Thanks to HD2 Sports a live feed will be available to watch the show please keep an eye on the Reining Alberta website for the link. Score that Run For the June edition of the Rundown Lyle has agreed to score a run and take you through his thinking process when evaluating maneuvers. Good runs are easier to evaluate than average runs. I just judged the US Team Trials for WEG. All of the best horses in the US and most of the runs were 74 – 76 and there was very little spread between us judges. Keep in mind that the appearance of a run seen on video is different from live. Particularly the impression of speed and therefore degree of difficulty is different. Also the position of the camera is different from the position of the live judge. So let’s evaluate this run from the cameras perspective. » Approach to center is correct, no excessive corrections, horse guides willingly. Circles are good, horse guides well, does not quite hit center so pattern placement suffers, assuming the camera is on the middle marker where it should be. Horse reaches the half way point of the small slow circle before he achieves his final speed. Plus ½. » Left Spin starts with 3 jerks, but is then followed by a very correct set of spins with some speed. Plus 1/2. » Right circles again start with a couple of small jerks, circles themselves are more accurate than the previous circles and the horse comes back to the slow circles quicker. Could be Plus 1 without the preparatory jerks, Plus 1/2. » Right spins are very good. Plus 1. » Figure 8 is accurate in pattern placement and speed. Plus ½. » Good approach, a correct stop although the horse goes in the ground, comes out then commits to the stop, very good rollback (plus ½, zero, plus 1) together maneuver score is plus ½. » Good approach, good stop, although the horse lifts a hind leg at the end of the stop and a very good rollback. (Plus ½, plus ½, plus 1) Total maneuver plus ½. » Correct approach, horse get a little strong coming around the corner, correct stop horse drops his shoulders a little and gets proppy, very good back. (Zero, zero, plus 1), total maneuver plus ½. Total score for run 74 ½.

The peace branch had a good start to our year with Clinic - June 14&15 with Cheryl Mitchell a great clinic by Locke Duce the middle of May and Show - June 16 then a fun show following the clinic. Judging Seminar - July 19 Clinician Lyle Jackson We introduced a new jog/trot class for the absolute Show - July 20 beginners whether it was the horse or the rider. The feedback was to continue it for the June show so Clinic - August 15&16 with Ralph Ament Show - August 17 thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what is happening! The great sponsors that are on board allowed for Show - September 13 some super prizes to be awarded ! All clinics and shows will be held at Hawker Pavillion Everyone is looking forward to the June show and @ Fairview College entries have already started to come in. Our first show at Prairie Mountain Ranch is set for June 14 and we are definately looking forward to it. There will be no paid warm ups at this show, we are offering a “Pattern Class” instead. Where you can run a set pattern and ride to the judge after your run for feed back. This willbe the first class of the morning, and we think it will be an invaluable resource to find out how you can improve your run, and what the judge will be looking for later in the afternoon. If you are looking for a schooling run, this would be a great class to plan to do it in.

SOUTH BRANCH [re]Introducing the SB Pattern Class
June 14, 2014 Prairie Mountain Ranch Class schedule Circuit classes won’t begin before 12 p.m.
Class begins at 9 a.m. Pattern: #6 The SB Pattern class is designed as a schooling class. Riders complete a designated pattern and have an opportunity to get feedback from the judge. Riders are welcome to modify patterns or go off pattern and school specific maneuvers, as long as their time in the arena does not exceed five minutes.
The arena will be open for riding a minimum of 45 minutes following the conclusion of the pattern class. Exact timing will depend on the number of entries received. Circuit classes will not begin before 12 p.m.
