IS IT TIME FOR A SAVINGS REVIEW?

With the Bank of England raising the bank base rate to 5%, savers are not getting the returns on their money that they should from their bank. Just recently a new client told us they were only getting 0.5% pa on their bank high interest savings account!

With deposit rates of between 5 to 7% pa available, now is a good time to review where your money is held.

Inflation is high and this can be the biggest threat to your wealth over time. We offer a free savings and investment review service to look at how to make your money work harder for you.

The last budget offered pension savers more opportunities to save for their retirement with the annual allowance increasing from £40,000 pa to £60,000. Higher earners and business owners can therefore structure their remuneration to take advantage of these enhanced limits.

As independent financial advisors, we can review the performance of your current holdings and check the charges that are being taken. Many older arrangements charge excessive fees for minimal service. We regularly save approximately 1% pa when clients come to Hamnett Wealth Management. Over the years this can make a massive difference to the pot of money you have available at retirement.

With tax allowances frozen again in the budget, we are seeing more and more clients, having larger and larger inheritance tax liabilities. We specialise in estate planning to ensure that more of our clients money passes down the generations in the most tax efficient way possible.

Contact us if you would like to discuss your personal situation in more detail and find out how we could assist you in the future.

THE TEAM CONTINUES TO GROW

We are delighted to welcome Georgia, Henry and Ben to the Hamnett Wealth Management Team. All three additions are working alongside our current advisors to serve our clients.

As the demand for our service grows, we are now looking to recruit an experienced Paraplanner. Anyone interested in this role should email lisa@hamnettwealth.com

or many of us, our home is our sanctuary and represents years of hard work, and a significant investment to be passed to future generations.

The pandemic taught us that the future can be uncertain. No one can predict what may happen and whether a reliance on long term care may be on the horizon.

Couples who own a home together may not be aware that they can protect it with a Property Protection Trust Will.

Anne Rogers, director of wills & probate at Best Solicitors, explains: “It can be a costly shock for families if the time comes when long term care is the only option.

“Care fees are substantial and may mean that after the death of one spouse, using the family home to fund care fees is the only option. We help families plan

ahead to avoid this. Couples can protect half the equity in their home should long term care be needed, and protect their hard earned asset for their children. With Property Protection Trust Wills in place, if long term care is needed, the local authority can only use the share of the property owned by the surviving spouse when calculating the personal contribution towards care fees.

Anne continued: “Life can be unpredictable. We can help couples take control of the future and protect their loved ones.”

Best Solicitors will be hosting a free event on Wednesday 27th September in the centre of Sheffield with its experts advising on how couples can protect their assets and also minimise inheritance tax. For more information about the event contact us at enquiry@bestsolicitorsonline.co.uk

Make moving easy

MOVING HOUSE CAN BE A BUSY TIME IN YOUR LIFE, WITH LOTS OF THINGS GOING ON. BUT THANKS TO WESTSIDE, YOU CAN NOW MAKE THINGS REALLY SIMPLE.

10 www.sheffieldvibe.com

We know, simple isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind when you think about moving. More likely it’s ‘stress’, ‘effort’, ‘money’ or ‘time’. But we promise, there are ways to make your move simpler and less stressful.

Start early

If you’re preparing to move home, or even if you’re in the viewing stages of buying a property, get your finances and paperwork in order now. Know where your proof of address and ID is, make sure you can get hold of copies of your bank statements, and try to make sure your money is in the right place (accessible savings or maybe a Lifetime ISA).

Compare prices

It may not seem usual to compare legal costs, but when it comes to conveyancing, you could be spending thousands of pounds. Your conveyancing solicitor will make sure everything in the purchase is above board, will check searches, interact with the seller’s legal team as well as the estate agents and make sure you are legally the owner of your new home.

A good conveyancing solicitor is worth their weight in gold! So it’s worth comparing on reviews as well as cost.

Throw stuff out

The easiest way to make moving simpler? Have less stuff! If you’ve been in your current home for a while, you may have accumulated a lot of items, most of which are probably unused or won’t work in your new home. Moving is easier when you only move what you need. It’s also cheaper! It will make your removals costs cheaper, or the number of times you have to go back and forth in vans and cars. You’ll need fewer people to help you and you’ll spend less time unpacking things you won’t even use!

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing –start looking into what items you’d like to sell, and stick them on Ebay, Facebook marketplace or Vinted. Then consider giving items away to friends, donating to charity shops. What you’re left with are the things you use and love, and the things that you couldn’t sell or give away,

which should be thrown or recycled. This can feel like a big process, so start as soon as you can.

Be in the know about your new property

The best money you can spend is on a Chartered Surveyor. This is a property expert who will inspect the property you want to buy and give you a report with their findings. You can choose the level of detail of the report, levels one, two or three, and they will identify any potential issues and whether you may need to pay to fix them in the future. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy the property, but you’ll be fully alert to what you’re buying. You may even be able to use the survey report to renegotiate with the seller – if you’re going to have to spend £3,000 on a new roof in a few years, they may knock that off the price to keep the sale going through.

Book a removals service

The easiest way to make moving easy? Get someone else to do it! Hiring a professional removals firm will mean your items are looked after, safe in transit and arrive at the time you want. No multiple back-and-forths, friends helping out who accidentally break stuff and the family who don’t want to be paid in pizza. To make it even simpler, you can book a packing and unpacking service. You’d be shocked at how quickly professionals can get your belongings efficiently packed and transferred. So rather than living out of boxes for weeks before and after your move, you can get into your new home knowing everything is in its place.

With thanks to Reallymoving for providing this advice. Visit www.reallymoving.com to find out more.

Create something special

ur gardens have taken on much more significance over the last few years and while we endeavour to make them the best they can possibly be, if you really want to give your outdoor space the wow factor, it may be time to turn to the experts.

Stone Mitchell & Co are based in Sheffield but work nationally and have over 20 years’ experience in transforming gardens into the most stunning of spaces. Whether that’s through adding a veranda, pergola, louvred roof, an outdoor kitchen or barbecue, stone features or plants and borders, they can work with you to help you realise exactly what it is you want and can achieve for your budget.

“We have been designing and delivering innovative, functional, beautiful spaces for over 20 years,” said managing director Ben Mitchell. “Our designers are qualified, knowledgeable and passionate about discovering the maximum potential in any space.

“Our thorough and transparent process will visualise your dream and outline how it will become a reality. We guarantee this to be a worthwhile investment in your property and lifestyle.”

Stone Mitchell & Co offer a full garden design service. During a 60-minute

consultation, one of their designers will meet you on site and discuss the possibilities within your space and establish a brief with yourselves. They will advise on what is achievable for what budget, explain the processes involved with any build as well as any legislation and show examples of materials.

Stone Mitchell & Co will also do an accurate survey of the site, collect photos from the ground and via a drone and do a soil pH test.

Armed with your budget and brief the company will come up with a scale 3D design of your space and will then organise a Zoom meeting to present and discuss the design concept CAD model.

During this review, any amendments can be made if necessary, ensuring you end up with your perfectly tailored garden that works within your budget.

When and only when you are completely satisfied with your design, you will receive a scale masterplan, 3D rendered visuals, construction details and material and quantity lists, giving you the perfect instruction to put out to tender. Alternatively, Stone Mitchell & Co can complete all works with the minimum of fuss.

One of their most popular installations is a glass garden room, which not only looks fantastic but can extend your time in the garden regardless of the weather. It can add value to your property too.

“A successful garden should be a journey… a physical journey with destinations and movement but a visual and sensory journey too,” added Ben. “The space should be an experience to use and enjoy.”

Exploring Ecclesall Road

cclesall Road is the perfect mix of leafy suburbia and bustling city life, with a plethora of high quality shops, cafes and restaurants nestled together in a neighbourhood only a short drive away from both Sheffield city centre and the Peak District.

What strikes us most about Ecclesall Road is its innate balance. Thanks to the Sheffield Hallam University campus and the area’s huge amount of quirky bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, it is always bustling with excited visitors and residents. However, Ecclesall Road is also one of the top spots around the city to cool off from busy urban life and relax in one of Sheffield’s many parks and green spaces.

With the expansive tree-lined alleyways and huge choice of parks like Endcliffe and the Botanical Gardens, it isn’t hard to see how Ecclesall contributes to Sheffield’s status as the greenest city in Europe – an impressive title given its hugely industrial history.

Although the city centre is walkable, Ecclesall Road is also highly accessible by public transport. You can expect a scenic walk if you choose to explore the area on foot as many of the houses lining the surrounding hills are sandstone period properties and have been well looked after by a friendly, long-standing community of residents who regard the beloved area as the ‘golden mile’.

What is there?

New and exciting businesses seem to be popping up on ‘Eccy Road’ all the time, from chains to independent stores there is something for everyone. There are chilled cafes for lunch and just about every cultural cuisine you could want for dinner.

A vibrant street art scene is alive and well on the road, such as an impressive mural of Jarvis Cocker the Sheffield legend and a huge Phlegm mural just outside Dunkin’ Doughnuts - now that’s a contrast! There are trendy gyms for those who enjoy an alternative workout and irresistible independent shops and boutiques with a healthy amount of charity shops for the thrifting enthusiasts.

Things to do

Ecclesall Road is not only good for a night out or a wander, but there are plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy. Here are just a few of things that will keep you and all the family busy if you are ever in need of some fresh day out plans.

Endcliffe Park

Not only is this park perfect for lounging with a picnic on a summer’s day, but its popular playground and quaint café make relaxing with little ones an easy task. The park is also a starting point for a beautiful riverside walk where you can branch off to forge dam if it tickles your fancy.

A short journey into the idyllic woods at the back of the park you will find the Mi Amigo memorial, dedicated to the crew and captain who sacrificed themselves on 22 February 1944 to avoid hitting the children in the park after their aircraft began to falter from enemy damage. This is a great place to pay a

short visit to honour a little piece of Sheffield history and to feel a sense of Sheffield pride.

Endcliffe also hosts a range of events throughout the year with everything from theme parks and children’s activities to a weekly park run of which you can participate or just watch and cheer along.

Sheffield Botanical Gardens

The Sheffield Botanical Gardens date back to the 19th century and have been providing a spectacular day out ever since. The glasshouse pavilions once housed an aviary, and aquarium and a 30ft lily pond, but now showcase botany from all over the world with helpful information posts all the way around.

The grade 2 listed structure of the ‘bear pit’ will surely excite any younger visitors since a 2.4m steel structure of a bear is standing there today, and happens to be what inspired the ‘Bears of Sheffield’ exhibition of 2021.

Furthermore, the gardens also regularly host events which make the most of the setting’s natural beauty, offering everything from theatre and dance to art, creative writing and artisan markets.

Sheffield General Cemetery

The principal burial ground during Victorian times. Today, it is Grade IIlisted, thanks to the English Heritage National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, and is also a local nature reserve. City dignitaries including George Bassett (founder of Liquorice Allsorts), Mark Frith (steel manufacturer and Master Cutler) and William Flockton (architect) are interred there.

Snuff Mill

Sharrow Mills was once home to Wilsons of Sharrow, specialists in snuff production. Much of the original building remains as does the water wheel.

Get box-fit in Sheffield

ew to Ecclesall Road, UBX (pronounced ‘you-box’) is a gym concept that does things a little differently. For a start, there are no class timetables and no booking, so you can start your workout at a time that works for you.

Sessions deliver a unique mix of boxing (25%) with strength training and conditioning (75%) across a 12-round circuit in under 45 minutes. Six of these three-minute rounds are dedicated to boxing exercises, whether that’s bagwork or one-on-one padwork with a coach, and six rounds use a combination of functional strength, cardio and conditioning movements.

The idea is you can walk in at any time and do as much or little as you like, depending on your level of fitness. The workouts are ever-changing too so there’s always something different to try however frequent you visit.

Training cycles last for seven weeks and follow four distinct phases, each with their own specific purpose.

‘Base’ is distinguished by higher rep volumes and dramatic tempo changes between each round. You’ll use lighter to

moderate weights so you can focus on speed.

In ‘Strength’ you will be challenged to increase your weight load whilst in ‘Power’, coaches combine speed and strength through explosive movement, changing the tempo of each exercise to increase your overall output.

Finally, ‘Peak’ is a de-load phase where weights and tempo are reduced to focus on form and technique. The aim is to challenge your stamina, endurance and agility.

All sessions can be monitored via a wearable MyZone fitness tracker so you can keep up to date with your progress as well as compare with others. And if you can’t get to a gym, you can do a workout at any time via their free ‘Train: On Demand’ app.

UBX was co-founded in Australia by four-time world champion boxer Danny Green and fitness and tech entrepreneur Tim West and now has almost 100 gyms all over the world.

The stylish Ecclesall Road venue is just the third UBX gym in England and has full changing room facilities and all equipment is provided.

You can book a taster session for free and then sign up for monthly membership or buy a range of visitor passes, which are available in denominations of one, five, ten or 20. Monthly ‘Freedom’ membership comes with a range of joining gifts including free UBX gloves and wraps, free MyZone MZ-3 heart rate monitor, 28 Day Challenge to get you started, nutrition guide and free InBody scans and results review. This isn’t a lock-in contract, you can cancel at anytime.

UBX is perfect for those with busy diaries who want to fit in workouts at times that suit them rather than the other way round.

Celebrating 40 years

CUSTOMERS TO

fter 40 years on Ecclesall Road, The Famous Sheffield Shop has become something of an institution in the city. This year marks a landmark anniversary for the independently run business and celebrations will coincide with the city’s Heritage Open Days.

Current owner, Jane Summers, will be holding a special event to mark the occasion on Sunday 17 September and will be inviting previous owners Don Alexander and Paul Iseard as well as some of those Sheffield makers that are responsible for creating and manufacturing the many items on display in the shop.

“Everyone is welcome to join us for a cup of tea and chat. After 40 years of continuous trading from the same site, we feel we’ve earned our heritage status in the steel city,” explains Jane. “The Sunday opening is a thank you to all the Sheffield support we have had over the years.”

The shop is now the only original tenant in the converted potted meat factory and opened in September 1983 by founder Don Alexander. Paul Iseard took over stewardship of the shop in 2001 and Jane, who had worked in the

shop since 2012, saw this as a great opportunity to continue the much-loved shop’s legacy and took over the business in 2020. Backed by a small knowledgeable team the business continues to improve and grow, with everyone involved very proud to be celebrating such a significant milestone.

Sheffield’s reputation for high quality manufacturing is world renowned and customers come from across the globe either in person or online to own something from our famous city. The shop stocks a wide range of cutlery, kitchen and pocket knives, scissors, jewellery and pewterware, all made within a short distance of its S11 location.

“All our products are chosen on the basis of their quality and value for money,” says Jane. “Our aim is to promote the best of Sheffield’s craftsmanship to potential and existing customers across the world.”

In addition to the retail side, through the shop and website, The Famous Sheffield Shop also offers a range of services including personalised engraving, knife sharpening, restoration and repairs.

“Down the years we have managed a wide range of restoration projects from

THEM

sterling silver tea sets to a humble paring knife,” adds Jane. “We can arrange the re-handling of table knives and hunting knives; replace worn out blades, restore carbon steel bladed items, replate silverplated items, knock out dents, make new components - the list is open-ended.”

There are few cities left that can celebrate a heritage that is still a thriving industry and The Famous Sheffield Shop proudly showcases the best that our city has to offer.

So why not come and join them on Sunday 17 September 12-6pm at the Ecclesall Road shop.

A special treat

RICHARD ABBEY VISITS BROCCO KITCHEN AT HUNTERS BAR, SHEFFIELD TO INDULDGE IN A LAVISH SEASONAL BANQUET.

A

trip to Brocco always feels like a treat. Whether it’s the food, the drinks, the Scandi-style décor or the ambience – or a combination of everything – it has that special something that just seems perfect for a celebration.

Indeed, on the evening of our visit, the restaurant was filled with recent graduates and their families acknowledging the ending of their time at university.

With birthdays having been and gone and children still at school we had no such celebrations on the agenda, but still felt right at home in this corner of Hunter’s Bar.

There’d been a few changes at Brocco since our last visit, mainly front of house, but also in the kitchen where David Fashanu has taken over as head chef. Becca Ashworth was an amiable host and after taking drinks orders – a Tanqueray No. 10 gin and tonic (£8.25) for my wife and a glass of Franschhoek Cellar sauvignon blanc (£9.40, 250ml) for me – she led us through the menu of small plates.

If you haven’t been to Brocco before, there are no starters, mains, desserts in the traditional sense but seasonal ‘small

plates’ covering nibbles, meat (The Hunter), fish (The Fisher) and vegetables (The Gardener) dishes as well as sides. The food is then brought to your table as and when it is cooked.

We started with some warm focaccia bread, which was served with a dipping bowl of balsamic glaze and extra virgin olive oil (£4.50) before moving on to the cooked dishes.

First to our table was roasted purple sprouting broccoli, pomegranate, kale, flaked almonds and basil oil (£12) and feta and spinach croquettes, which sat atop a piperade sauce and had been dusted in parmesan (£13). Taking the broccoli first, this had been cooked just right with deep-fried kale and the pomegranate adding bursts of flavour to every bite. The croquettes had that lovely combination of Mediterranean flavours.

Next to the table was the squid ink risotto with pine nuts (£14) and pan roasted king scallops, carrot purée, pickled fennel, hazelnut butter (£18).

Given the deep black colour, squid ink is not to everyone’s liking but we loved the rich flavour that has a subtle hint of the sea. The well-cooked scallops’ sweetness was accentuated even further with the addition of the carrot and hazelnut and

we loved the zingy fennel which adding an extra dimension to the dish.

Meat dishes came in the form of pan roasted chicken breast, charred pineapple, mangetout, nduja and sweetcorn purée (£16) and 6oz fillet steak, chorizo, peas, onion rings (£26). The nduja provided a fiery element to the chicken dish whilst the chorizo and peas added a sweet and smoky element to the steak.

We’d left a little room for dessert and dishes of lemon posset, compressed apple, sugared almonds (£7) and chocolate mousse, toasted hazelnuts, macerated strawberries (£10) provided the perfect finish to our meal.

We were left contemplating how lucky we are to have a restaurant like Brocco so close to home. Now that’s worth celebrating.

Keeping well with science

DR GRACE HULA EXPLAINS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE - A HOLISTIC, PATIENT-FOCUSSED, SCIENCE-BASED, COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO HEALTH.

unctional medicine is a personalised and integrative approach to healthcare which involves understanding the prevention, management and root causes of complex chronic diseases.

In conventional medicine, a trained doctor diagnoses and provides treatment to manage symptoms. Where a cause is identified, medication can be administered to restore health. When a cause cannot be identified, such as chronic disease, the treatment or diagnosis of the underlying issue is usually not taken care of.

The functional medicine model is specifically suited to the management of chronic disease as the root of the cause is addressed; usually derived from lifestyle choices, environmental exposure and genetic influences.

By examining a client’s lifestyle factors, medical history and genetic analysis a preventative approach to underlying health issues can be made.

Based on cutting-edge science, functional medicine offers a whole new way to understand and look at chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic infections, allergies, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue, hormone imbalances, thyroid and adrenal disorders.

First we must understand a client’s medical history and any biological imbalances that are showing up as symptoms. We can then recommend comprehensive testing to obtain a clearer picture of what is going on in their body.

Test can include gut stool analysis, full hormonal profile, organic acid levels, epigenetic DNA tests, detoxification and oxidative stress tests with the objective of finding the root of the illness.

The ultimate goal is to heal disease and promote a healthy life. A healthy life is not defined as simply an absence of disease, but rather a positive vitality filled

with energy, joy, gratitude and balance.

The functional medicine model evolved from the insights and perspectives of a group of influential scientific leaders who realised the importance of a personalised approach to disease causes based on the evolving research in nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics.

Once we have understood what is truly causing the symptoms then a personal action plan can be devised. We will monitor any changes in the client’s symptoms, guide them through recommendations, provide support and monitor their progress throughout a twelve week programme.

All aspects of the process can be completed virtually - online. Tests can be ordered to be delivered to the client’s home, or blood draws can be arranged with local phlebotomy providers.

If you want to find out if functional medicine is the right option for you, G&M Healthcare offer a FREE no obligation initial consultation with Dr Grace Hula.

Why it’s difficult to purchase a Rolex

PA

JEWELLERY EXPLAINS THE SITUATION OF ACQUIRING AN ICONIC TIMEPIECE.

ertain Rolex watches, particularly the professional range, have been difficult to buy for a while now but in the last couple of years, things have moved up to a different level.

Even though key models would be absent, not long ago it was normal for a Rolex stockist to have 100-plus watches on display. Today, you will find a sparse selection to choose from with those probably the less popular options. Even if you do spot your dream watch in a window you may find it has a plaque saying ‘exhibition only’ meaning you can look but not buy.

Rolex have explained that the shortage is due to an increase in global

demand (especially with an explosion in the Asian market). Production cannot be quickly increased due to the highly skilled and labour intensive nature of manufacture. Such skill cannot be taught overnight – it requires years of training and experience.

So, what does this mean for the secondary market?

The difficulty of acquiring new watches has encouraged more people to consider pre-owned instead. Therefore, prices on nearly new watches are strong, in some cases slightly over the list prices as the motivation to buy second hand is about availability rather than price. That’s not to say that there are not bargains to be had, particularly in watches over ten years old, but prices are based on what buyers are willing to pay rather than comparison being made to the new price.

The premium models are mainly but not exclusively the professional range. Due to the extremely limited supply these watches are being offered in the secondary market at substantially more than the suggested retail prices; in the most extreme cases, up to three times

those advertised on the Rolex website.

If you’ve spoken to a stockist about one of these watches in the last couple of decades you will be familiar with the idea of waiting lists, but today it’s not as simple as putting your deposit down and taking delivery in three to five years. Demand is outstripping supply to such a degree that the distribution is being heavily curated; Rolex stockists are selling their limited allocation to select customers that have a history with the store and that they’re confident will not sell the watch straight on for a profit. Of course, this makes nearly new pre-owned stock even more scarce, further driving up values.

We hope this explains a little bit about the current situation. If you have any questions or wish to know more, we are always happy to talk Rolex and offer advice. We also have an excellent selection of pre-owned models in our showroom.

Guru of fashion and modelling

DELYSE HUMPHREYS RECENTLY CELEBRATED HER 86TH BIRTHDAY AT A SURPRISE PARTY AT THE MAYNARD. HERE, SHE SPEAKS TO RICHARD ABBEY ABOUT HER TRANSITION FROM MODEL TO BUSINESSWOMAN AND MORE.

When Delyse Humphreys looks back over her life and career, she does so with a feeling of pride. For the Sheffield supermodel turned successful businesswoman helped to launch the careers of hundreds of girls through her modelling and casting agency, Style.

She is held in such high esteem by her prodigies that many of them turned up to a surprise party to celebrate her recent 86th birthday at The Maynard, Grindleford.

“I thought it was just going to be a small lunch for half a dozen of us but it snowballed,” recalls Delyse, who found herself in the company of over 30 guests.

“Justine Woolley and Tracey Harrison organised the party for me, along with Jo Hill and Alison Slack, now Singleton,” said Delyse. “I’ve always kept in touch with them and they still phone me for

advice. It was lovely to see them all.”

No doubt the afternoon was spent recalling tales – glamorous and otherwise – of Style and for Delyse, a modelling career which began back in the 1950s.

Delyse was born in Sheffield in 1937 and grew up on Lansdowne Road, attending school on Sharrow Lane. As a teenager she had ambitions of taking part in beauty competitions and although encouraged by her parents, her dad insisted that she get a ‘proper job’ first.

“I thought that was boring but [dad] made me go to business school and I ended up getting a job there,” stated Delyse. “I did two days, two nights for two years and did shorthand, typing and bookkeeping so I knew about business.”

Delyse would call on these valuable skills much later but fulfilled her dream of becoming a model, taking part in beauty competitions and doing

promotions work. She got a job working in the office and as a model for Aquapoise swimwear, based in Hillsborough, who also used her for the basis for their swimwear designs.

“I was the standard size 12,” said Delyse. “I was 34-24-36, I always remember that.”

Brushes with fame were all part and parcel of Delyse’s early career, the highlight of which was auditioning for the role of Tatiana Romanova in the 1963 James Bond film, From Russia With Love. She didn’t get the part (that went to Daniela Bianchi) or get to meet Sean Connery but it was an experience she cherished.

She did eventually make it on to the silver screen, appearing in the 1969 Ken Russell film, Women in Love, alongside Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson.

Style, the model and casting agency,

INTERVIEW
68 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Guests gather at The Maynard for Delyse’s 86th birthday (L-R) Gail, Margaret, Justine, Tracey, Delyse, Jo, Alison and Lucy

wasn’t really something Delyse had considered but came into being after a chance meeting.

“It was a friend called Barry Bronks,” said Delyse. “I’d worked with him on promotions and he rang me up one day and said ‘come and see me, I’ve got a job for you’.

“It turned out the job wasn’t for me but he needed promotions girls, front of house, that kind of thing. I wasn’t an agency but I said I’d find him three or four girls. He then said, ‘by the way, what are you doing for the rest of your life?’

“I laughed. He said ‘I’m serious. I hate to see talent wasted’. So I said, ‘what do you want me to do?’.

“He asked me lots of questions, took notes on a big sheet of foolscap paper and at the end of it said, ‘I’ll tell you what you’re doing. You’re going to open an agency and you’re going to call it Style’.”

The rest is history.

Delyse went out looking for property and found a place on the corner of London Road and Broadfield Road, which became Style by Delyse Humphreys. She bought the building

after three or four years and completely renovated it.

“It had mirrors from floor to ceiling all down one wall,” she recalled. “I was able to point out what [the girls] were doing wrong and what they were doing right. I taught deportment and balance, makeup, hair… Unlike today where we’ve got makeup artists, hairdressers and all those sorts of people, you didn’t have them then unless it was a big fashion shoot.”

Some of Delyse’s girls went on to have fantastic, high-profile careers with the ones sticking in her mind being Justine Woolley and Michelle Behennah.

Party-organiser and close friend Justine had been with Delyse since the age of 14 and had a career that took her to Hamburg, Milan and Paris. Michelle was sent to Models One in London and from there she went to New York to sign with Ford, eventually appearing on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Sports Illustrated magazines amongst many others.

Of course there are many more success stories which is testament to the positive

influence Delyse had on so many girls’ careers and lives. It’s something she remains fiercely proud of.

“I don’t want to be conceited about it, I’m just pleased the girls have done so well,” she said. “I’m really proud of them all. It’s not just about modelling, it’s about learning life skills as well. I was tough on them, I made them work hard, but I like to think I made a difference.”

Given the reception she received at her birthday party, and the successful careers she helped to curate, I think you can

Bakewell

Idyllically situated on the banks of the river Wye, the biggest town in the Peak District National Park's mellow stone buildings, medieval five-arched stone bridge and quaint courtyards are a magnet for painters, photographers and sightseers alike.

Legend has it that the town's famous Bakewell Pudding was created by mistake by a local cook in the mid-19th century. Today her delectable ‘jam tart that went wrong’ can be sampled at various bakeries and cafés and posted virtually anywhere in the world!

Bargains galore are on offer every Monday at the bustling outdoor market, and for an extra buzz, head for the livestock market to experience the action in the theatre-like auction ring.

Cherry-pick choice local produce at one of Britain’s best Farmers' Markets or browse in specialist shops selling everything from high fashion and outdoor clothing to handmade chocolates and rare whiskies. Savour a light snack, lunch or dinner at a host of cafés, restaurants, pubs and tea rooms and take

a brewery tour and sample world-beating craft beers at Thornbridge Brewery.

Baslow

On the northern fringe of Chatsworth Park, the attractive village of Baslow is close to some of the Dark Peak's most dramatic scenery.

Set beneath a gritstone edge of the same name, it lies on the banks of the river Derwent and is home to several hotels, pubs, cafés, restaurants and a Michelin-starred restaurant, Fischers Baslow Hall, as well as a clutch of exclusive shops.

Its conveniently-located campsite is also popular with visitors keen to explore nearby Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Bakewell, the Monsal Trail and much further afield.

With a pretty village green, Goose Green, at its heart, bright with daffodils each spring, Baslow consists of five ‘Ends’: Far, Nether, Bridge, West and Over Ends.

Look out for a distinctively small toll house on the historic 17th century bridge at Bridge End, and the nearby church of

St Anne. The unusual clock on the church has the inscription VICTORIA 1897 instead of the usual numbers, and inside you can spot the whip once used to clear the church of dogs!

Peak Village Rowsley

Nestled in the small, picturesque village of Rowsley, Peak Village is just a stone’s throw from Chatsworth House and Gardens. The atmosphere is relaxed and a Derbyshire friendly welcome awaits from staff and fellow shoppers.

In this accessible environment, you can enjoy browsing a range of national and independent stores offering great choice in fashion, accessories, homeware, gifts, outdoor clothing and equipment.

David Mellor Visitor Centre

Located in Hathersage, comprising a museum, cutlery factory, shop and café. The shop stocks the full range of David Mellor cutlery and kitchen knives (most made on-site) alongside a collection of the finest British crafts: handmade pottery, woodware, glass, English baskets, horn and marble, jams and honeys plus a

range of professional kitchen equipment. The museum features iconic British traffic lights and historical cutlery from Mellor’s college projects to silverware for prestigious clients. The Riverside Kitchen is open daily for breakfast, lunch and afternoon coffee and cake. Tours of the cutlery factory run each Sunday for most of the year.

Monsal Trail

The Monsal Trail is a traffic free route for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users through some of the Peak District's most spectacular limestone dales. The trail runs along the former Midland Railway line for 8.5 miles between Blackwell Mill, in Chee Dale and Coombs Road, at Bakewell.

The public can experience the full length of the former railway route at their own pace and see breath-taking views at places like Water-cum-Jolly Dale that have remained hidden since the railway closed in 1968.

Peak Ales Brewery

Peak Ales Brewery, just a stone’s throw from Chatsworth, produces traditional real ales in the stunning landscape of the Peak District. It is run by Robert and Debra Evans and a team whose combined knowledge and experience in producing real ale craft beers has kept the business running since 2005.

Born out of love and the challenges of setting up their own micro-brewery, Robert and Debra's ales have won numerous national awards in both cask and bottle.

As well as selling to hotels, pubs and retail outlets around the Peak District, Peak Ales is open to the public, with a shop at the barn or availability online.

Matlock Farm Park

Matlock Farm Park, which was recently voted Peak District & Derbyshire Visitor Attraction of the Year for the second year running, has a fantastic array of facilities, including an indoor play centre with coffee shop, a cafe, party and function rooms, large animal barns, a Changing Places facility and more.

On site you’ll find llamas, alpacas, sheep, meerkats, horses, donkeys, ducks, ferrets, chickens, geese, emus, wallabies, guinea pigs, rabbits, goats, deer, pigs and cows. There’s also a variety of rare breeds too such as the beautiful white, shaggy Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep to mighty Suffolk Punch horses of which there are so few now.

Peak Rail

Peak Rail was set up in the early 1980s and runs on what was the old Midland Railway route linking Derby and Manchester across the Peak District. Trains depart from Rowsley South to

Matlock, via Darley Dale, and back. Trains depart on weekends and bank holidays as well as Wednesdays in the summer.

One recent addition is their afternoon teas. These run on the Palatine restaurant train on Saturdays, last up to two hours, and consist of a selection of sandwiches followed by a homemade scone with clotted cream, butter and strawberry preserve.

Heights of Abraham

There’s no better way to start the day at the Heights of Abraham than by taking a flight in one of these famous cable cars. Travel across the picturesque Derwent Valley and enjoy the views of Matlock Bath below; the journey takes you over 554ft upwards to the summit, 1,000ft above sea level.

As well as heading up you can head down too by taking a tour underground in the two famous show caverns – the Great Rutland and Great Masson caverns. Follow one of the professional cavern guides deep into the hillside and learn tales of mining, history, geology, and tourism. Afterwards, take a stroll across the landscaped gardens that portray both the dark and light Peak District to the new film theatre and learn more about the formation of the caverns and a newly updated film about the construction of the cable cars.

Crowd-pleaser

It’s been two years now since The George was relaunched by Longbow Bars & Restaurants and despite having lost its ‘newness’, the Hathersage pub feels very much part of the community and has become the goto venue for food, drink and family celebrations.

Rob Hattersley and his team completely modernised the 500-year-old building, which was once frequented by Charlotte Brönte, creating a stylish and comfortable pub, restaurant and hotel. One of the more recent additions is an extensive outdoor terrace, perfect for when the sun pokes its head through the clouds.

The dining room overlooks this terrace and is a bright, airy space in which to sample The George’s foodie delights –and there are many.

The menu has something for everyone with plenty of crowd-pleasers including pizza (made in a wood-fired oven), burgers, fish ‘n’ chips and homemade pie of the day. There’s also what you’d perhaps describe as more ‘gastro-style’ dishes and it was here that we took inspiration for a pleasant summer’s day lunch.

I started with an onion bhaji-inspired scotch egg, which was served with homemade mango chutney (£9.50).

Perfectly cooked (the yolk was runny), this was a hearty introduction to our meal and had those subtle Indian flavours that are so familiar. Across the table my wife tucked into a goats’ cheese and pomegranate croquette served with tomato jam, sweety drop peppers and rocket salad (£8.95).

Both dishes paired well with glasses of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Ancora (£7.50, 250ml) and Pinot Grigio Rosato Ancora (£7.50, 250ml), both supplied by Hattersley Wines of Bakewell.

Much of the produce at The George is sourced locally and this provenance is outlined on the menu. Meat comes from New Close Farm in Haddon, fish from RG Morris & Son in Buxton and fruit and veg from Winsters in Chesterfield, for example.

Our mains continued the high standards and my wife’s sage and chorizo stuffed pork fillet wrapped in pancetta, with sauteed greens, mashed potato, creamy sage and chorizo sauce (£20.95) wouldn’t have looked out of place on any restaurant table. It’s a dish that has been on The George’s menu and had become something of a signature dish.

My BBQ beef short rib (£22.50) was meaty, as you’d expect, and well complemented by the accompanying grilled corn on the cob, coleslaw and

skinny fries.

We’d still got room for dessert and The George Gourmand (£11.95) is a great way to sample a smaller selection of the desserts on offer and is served with a generous shot of espresso. I tried a slither of lemon tart, chocolate brownie, meringue, coconut ball and scoops of raspberry and mango sorbets. It was delicious.

My wife opted for the much heartier portion of the homemade lemon tart served with crushed meringue, pistachio ice cream and strawberry coulis (£8.95).

Children are well catered for at The George too and my two children tucked into dishes of margherita pizza (£4.50) and burger and fries (£7.95).

It may have plenty of history but this is definitely a pub for the modern day.

Colour and Light: Scottish Colourists from the Fleming Collection

Until 9 December / Graves Gallery sheffieldmuseums.org.uk

The four artists known as the Scottish Colourists, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter and Samuel John Peploe, were one of the most talented, experimental and distinctive groups in 20th century British art. The lives, relationships and accomplishments of these pioneering artists are set to be explored in Colour and Light: Scottish Colourists from the Fleming Collection, a new exhibition at opening at Sheffield’s Graves Gallery this summer.

Colour and Light traces Cadell, Fergusson, Hunter and Peploe’s development as virtuosos of dazzling interiors, landscapes, portraits and still lifes. As early supporters of breakthrough artists in France, they drew inspiration from PostImpressionists Paul Cézanne and Vincent Van Gogh, as well as the work of Henri Matisse, André Derain and more. Emboldened by such creativity, these young Scots explored the frontiers of contemporary art through their cutting-edge use of pure colour and line.

The exhibition will present over 30 paintings, sculpture and works on paper from the Fleming Collection. Alongside works by Cadell, Fergusson, Hunter and Peploe, Colour and Light also includes a rare painting by Fergusson’s partner, Margaret Morris, an accomplished but often overlooked artist better known for her contribution to dance. The Fleming Collection works are complemented by two paintings by Cadell and Hunter from Sheffield’s own collection.

The exhibition has been co-curated by James Knox, Director of the Fleming Collection and author of The Scottish Colourists, the recent book surveying the group’s place in Bristish art history. Works on display illustrate key moments in the group’s development, from their precocious beginnings to the maturity of their later works as landscape painters entranced by the distinctive beauty of the Scottish light.

Have your say...

CHOOSE YOUR WINNER OF THE WESTSIDE READERS’ CHOICE AWARD... FIND OUT HOW BELOW.

The Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards returns this October –and we need your help in choosing a winner.

The Westside Readers’ Choice Award 2023 let’s you have your say. Whether you select your favourite local café, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. 2022’s winner was The Wortley Arms, a gastro pub in the north of Sheffield.

To vote, go online to www.rmcmedia/events, or scan the QR code below with your smartphone, to let us know where you enjoy eating out most. All entries must include a home address and contact details, only one entry per email address is allowed. The closing date for entries is 13 October 2023.

This year’s event, which takes place at the OEC on Monday 30 October, will be the third year running we have held the event here and if the previous two years are anything to go by, 2023’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.

Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multipurpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.

When it came to the 2022 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by I Grunwerg Ltd, competition was keen. The top prize went to Rafters, a small but stunning restaurant on Oakbrook Road that just seems to get better and better. The 3 AA rosette restaurant, owned by Alistair Myers and Tom Lawson, flies the flag for fine dining in the city and we loved everything about it - the food, the wine, the service and the overall attention to detail. It’s just a lovely experience and well deserving of our flagship award.

Judging by the huge round of applause that greeted the announcement - made

by our compere Chris Wilson, the former managing editor of RMC Media – it was a popular choice and welldeserved.

Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp.

CHARLES BRADSHAW DISCOVERS HIDDEN DELIGHTS INSIDE THE OLDEST BUILDING IN SHEFFIELD THAT’S STILL IN DAILY USE.

n a rainy summer weekday, it was a welcome relief to take refuge inside and visit 1554 Coffee Shop within Sheffield Cathedral. Opened in June 2015, 1554 Coffee Shop has been managed by Ruth MaherHeslip since its inception. Ruth now has the role of Enterprise Business Manager and oversees both the Cathedral’s coffee shop and adjacent gift shop operations.

The quirky brand name derives from the year Mary I granted a Royal Charter that returned lands and property to the people of Sheffield after former King Edward VI had confiscated them in a religious coup prior to his untimely death.

Through the Cathedral’s awardwinning hexagonal entrance hall and across the west end nave, an impressive six panel stained glass window featuring Saints Peter and Paul - Patron Saints of Sheffield Cathedral - sits above the glass doors of 1554 Coffee Shop. It’s a deceptively spacious area with plenty of tables, comfortable seating and abundant natural light.

Upon our arrival, just at the turn of noon, the shop was already bustling. We were promptly escorted to a table and began to study the menu. The lunch menu offerings include a wide selection

of hot and cold food with vegetarian options also available. The day’s soup and quiche selections are prominently displayed on a chalkboard behind the food counter. Ordering is made at the till with a table numbering system.

To begin, I opted for rose lemonade (£2.60) with my dining companion choosing a bottle of spring water (£1.50). Drinks were promptly served, with our food selections arriving shortly after. My Ploughman’s Plate (£8.75) was a bounty of delights, comprising a large wedge of Cheddar cheese, crunchy pickled onions, seasonal coleslaw plus bread and butter portions. Unfortunately, due to unexpected circumstances, pork pies had not been delivered on time. Our server had informed us prior to ordering, so instead I was treated to sampling a Cornish Pasty. The warm pastry was delightfully soft and flavoursome with a generous meat and vegetable filling. My companion chose Quiche of the Day; a butternut squash, rocket and tomato recipe. An ample slice was presented alongside a plethora of mouth-watering salad components: namely, coleslaw, pesto-infused pasta, chutney, tomatoes and salad leaves. The freshly baked warm tart had a delightful consistency with each mouthful melting in the mouth,

perfectly complementing the colourful medley.

To complete our luncheon, we shared a Bakewell slice (£3.10) with its distinctive tastes of jam and almonds, topped with thick, sticky icing. Finally, hot drinks were selected; my small Americano (£3) made from freshly ground beans and delivered piping hot; a special blend created for the 1554 Coffee Shop. My fellow diner finished with a traditional small pot of Yorkshire Tea (£1.90).

With our hunger and thirst truly satisfied, we departed through the gift shop, vowing to return. 1554 Coffee Shop is a great space, providing a range of wholesome food and drinks – and a great place to escape from the unpredictable British weather.

Take the lead at university this September

START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON, SAYS IRIS ADAMS.

EDUCATION
108 www.sheffieldvibe.com

ongratulations! You or a loved one is off to University to start a new independent life. While it can be a nerve-wracking change, here are a few tips to help the transition run smoothly.

Accommodation

When it comes to University accommodation, you can always find something to fit your individual needs and interests. Check forums that review the university experience and check whether the building ticks your boxes.

Universities offer a variety of student accommodations ranging in price, size, and sociability.

Sometimes living with new people can be a struggle. Hopefully, your new housemates will be friends for life, however, if you do

end up with a few clashing personalities, it’s important to know how to deal with conflicts.

It’s good practice to confront issues that arise instead of letting them simmer and sometimes all it takes is a face-to-face conversation to smooth over some issues. However, if the situation becomes unmanageable, there are always people in the University team who are there to help and smooth over potential difficulties. Most importantly, do not feel pressured to continue living with difficult people after the first year even if that means separating yourself from a particular group.

Budgeting

When it comes to money, it is important to budget, especially in the cost of living crisis. Save the Student is a good website that helps with tailoring a budget to fit your needs. A few key tips would be to avoid an unarranged overdraft, reduce the number of subscriptions you pay for and keep an eye out for student discounts.

Eating

Try to get into the habit of planning your meals. This means you can do a bigger shop once a week with a few dishes in mind, including one that can be

split into portions to feed you throughout the week. Don’t forget to factor in a few snacks, and some emergency hangover supplies too. If you’re a hopeless cook, hello fresh or alternative meal providers are a healthier option to takeaways.

What to take

There are a million and one checklists on the internet detailing every last item to pack for University, yet my main advice would be to NOT overpack. Most University rooms are short on space and can feel crowded and claustrophobic with an excess of decorations and trimmings. You will end up acquiring new belongings throughout the first year. Also, keeping clutter to a minimum helps with the annual stress of moving house.

Hopefully, this list can provide a little help along the road to University. The most important thing is to study hard and have a brilliant time. Remember that although the idea that these will be the best years of your life is often spread about, this time will be whatever you make it. There is no pressure to be having the best time all the time and you have your whole life ahead of you.

Go big or go home

After turning their attention to the hatchback market in recent years, Renault have now switched their focus to large cars with the launch of the Rafale.

The all-new Renault Rafale is the first production vehicle entirely designed according to the new visual language that Gilles Vidal has brought in as Head of Design Renault. It is visionary, daring, perfectly in tune with its time and tailor-made for a period when everything is moving ever faster.

The car also features up-to-the-minute connectivity and a 200hp E-Tech full hybrid powertrain that is as efficient as it is frugal and uses recycled materials.

The all-new Renault Rafale is an advanced coupe SUV, it looks as vibrant as it feels when you drive it, and it is an opportunity to share an intense driving experience with friends or children – however grownup they may be.

The all-new Renault Rafale 200 hp E-Tech full hybrid will reach markets in spring 2024.

Magnificent seven

Kia UK has revealed pricing and specifications for the all-new Kia EV9, the brand’s new flagship three-row electric SUV.

Kia will offer three grades to EV9 buyers in the UK: ‘Air’, ‘GT-Line’ and ‘GT-Line S’, each with a three-row, seven-seat layout as standard. All three models offer a 99.8 kWh long-range battery pack with heat pump, and with it the ability to drive up to more than 300 miles from a single charge. Kia’s 800V ultra-fast charging technology means every version of the EV9 can be recharged from 10-to-80 per cent in as little as 24 minutes when plugged into a 350kW high-powered charger.

The first UK customer deliveries of the EV9 ‘GT-Line S’ will start from January 2024, with ‘Air’ and ‘GT-Line’ models due to follow later on. Prices start from £64,995.

Shaped by desire

Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of sporty, elegant dream cars with a new, independent series. The new CLE Coupé uses the conceptual and technical innovations of the C-Class and E-Class. With its expressive design, exclusive comfort equipment for maximum individuality and confident, sporty driving performance, the new two-door car goes its own way.

The new CLE Coupé sets standards in efficiency thanks to systematic electrification and intelligent downsizing. All engines are mild hybrids with an integrated starter generator and 48-volt electrical system. There is a choice of four-cylinder units and – as the most powerful engine – a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine.

High performance

The latest generation BMW M2 raises the bar in the high-performance premium compact segment. The new car builds on its formidable predecessor’s strengths to deliver an even greater driving experience, taking the formula of a classic high-performance sports car and reproducing it in highly concentrated form with cutting-edge technology.

The new BMW M2 encapsulates the pure joy of driving: its compact dimensions, a six-cylinder in-line engine, a manual gearbox option, rear-wheel drive and an advanced control/operating concept – allowing the driver to adjust the vehicle setup as desired – are all central to its appeal.

With a maximum output of 460hp – 90hp more than the original BMW M2 – and exhilarating driving dynamics that have been honed during in-depth testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit and other race tracks, the new BMW M2 represents another highlight in the model offensive celebrating the 50-year anniversary of BMW M GmbH. Priced from £64,890 OTR.

Pride and joy

WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CAR, TURN TO THE EXPERTS FOR COMPLETE PEACE OF MIND.

You wouldn’t take your Rolex watch to just any old repair shop would you?

While most people are unlikely to ever get their hands on one of the prestigious timepieces, many are fortunate enough to own a car that not only gets them from A to B but that they feel great pride in.

Nick Crouch established Tec-Nick Autos in 2010 and believes wholeheartedly in applying the Rolex philosophy to cars. He promotes the benefit of taking your precious vehicle to a specialist engineer – rather than a onesize-fits-all garage – and this doesn’t have to mean the main dealer.

As an ATA diagnostic technician who trained at Audi and who worked for Gilders in Sheffield for 11 years, Nick is perfectly placed to apply his specialist skills to your Audi, VW, SEAT or Skoda – as well as other makes.

Tec-Nick Autos moved to state-of-theart premises on Dannemora Drive (close to Sheffield Arena) in August 2019 which enabled them to enhance their services even further.

With specialist diagnostic equipment geared specifically for these brands they can do everything the main dealer can but with the added bonus of carrying out the work for up to 60 per cent less. This includes MOTs, tyres, servicing, and almost any other work that may need doing.

Tec-Nick Autos also offer engine re-mapping and

tuning using Rapid modules. Engine remapping is when the car’s onboard computer (often called an Electronic Control Unit, or ECU) is

modified with new software to affect its behaviour.

From the factory, the vast majority of cars won’t have their engine’s maximum potential performance on offer — even on sports cars. ECUs usually limit the engine’s performance to improve reliability, emissions and fuel consumption.

A remap is usually done to unlock more power from an engine by removing some of these restrictions. It’s also possible to have a remap focused on increasing fuel consumption as well.

Offering true peace of mind, all parts that are fitted at Tec-Nick Autos carry a minimum of 12 months warranty. And if your car is brand new, any work they do won’t invalidate the manufacturers warranty.

Nick has built up such a sterling reputation over the last 13 years, and is so well trusted, that new cars are even brought to the garage for their first service. This is thanks in no small part to his excellent background and training.

Help on the farm

Hundreds of vulnerable children and young people from across the region will receive support on a working farm to overcome a range of serious issues and return to education, thanks to a grant from Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons to Whirlow Hall Farm Trust.

The £54,000 grant will see well over 300 local children spending extended periods at the farm near Sheffield where they will work to overcome mental health and physical illness and the aftermath of life changing events such as bereavement.

The children who are referred to Whirlow Hall Farm are disengaged from education due to the issues they are facing. Whirlow provides activities which are fun, engaging, and tailored to the needs of learners, with every young person having their own goals and achievements. They are supported to reduce their anxieties and reengage with education. They may return to their school, secure a place at a new or special school, or gain qualifications during their time at Whirlow to support them to access further education.

The children and young people get involved in real farm jobs and activities based on their age, abilities and interests. This could be anything from egg collecting to moving large animals around the farm to helping with lambing. Each youngster has their own needs and interests and attends between one to three days per week for a minimum of 12 weeks but most stay much longer. The activities are all linked to the curriculum and learning is embedded throughout. Additionally there are classroom based activities to support their learning and for when the weather is not suitable for being outdoors all day.

The results of the programme are extremely positive, with 85 per cent of children who have attended the Farm showing a reduction of anxieties after 12 weeks. For those who stay for longer, at six months this increases to 95 per cent. Once they are back at school, 70 per cent reported improved behaviour and better engagement in lessons leading to a reduced chance of exclusion. Last year, 86 per cent progressed in a way that was suitable for them. The team at Whirlow expect this to be at least 90 per cent at the end of this academic year.
