PROMOTIONDAVID J MARTIN

Quality and care Create the right first impression with a bespoke kitchen from expert craftsmen, David J Martin.

M

any of us love nothing more than welcoming family and friends into our homes to share a delicious feast. But when our kitchens are tired and dated, or there simply isn’t enough space to put things, the blissful idea of cooking up a storm for your favourite people can suddenly become a chaotic nightmare. If you have ever been stood in the middle of your kitchen holding a burning-hot tray searching for available worktop space, or know the frustration of juggling baking dishes in and out of a too-small oven, it’s time for a revamp. Creating a bespoke kitchen is the ideal way to ensure each element is designed to suit your specific requirements and, at David J Martin, on Springvale Road in Sheffield, you can do just that. The experienced and friendly staff at David J Martin can help you realise your kitchen’s potential and David and his team of expert craftsmen will plan, design and build your perfect kitchen using the wood and finish of your choice. There are so many advantages to having furniture made to your exact specifications; bespoke units can help to utilise all available space, making your kitchen easier to enjoy. Whether you require additional worktop space for food preparation or clever storage solutions like deep drawers and pull-out shelves, David and his team can plan every component for you. If you simply want to change the appearance of your kitchen, updating the worktops and doors of existing units is the perfect way to dramatically transform a look, without the upheaval or expense of having a whole new kitchen fitted. Contemporary styles are as popular as ever and David now has a new design

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

for handleless doors. With a concealed component on the top of the door, which is built in as part of the detail, they are a.i.o.c. ideal for creating DESIGNERS and MAKERS clean lines and a minimalist feel. The company has built a fantastic reputation for providing quality, bespoke products with a consistent attention to detail. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch,” David says. “We even make our own cutters for producing mouldings, which means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and we will still be able to match the designs.” As well as providing excellent products and kitchens, the company is highly regarded for its great customer and after-sales service. If you have any problems, queries or complaints, they will help to put them right – and that applies whether you’ve had your new kitchen for two weeks or ten years. It is a truly caring approach and, with much of the business’s work coming from customer recommendations, it is clearly a successful one. For more information, or to see what is on offer, call 0114 268 6718 or check out the website www.david-j-martin.co.uk.

CLINTON’S NEW CHALLENGE

p puts Boxing chamity commun first

ou may believe that valuations must be paid for, or that they are only available to homeowners who have already committed to selling their house. In fact, many estate agents offer free valuations with no obligation to put your property on the market. By seeking professional guidance on the price of your property, you are able to make an informed decision on whether now is the right time to sell. Local property experts know the regional hotspots and can also advise on where the most interest is being generated, and therefore where prices are peaking. If your home falls within one of these areas, it may be worth a lot more than you expect. With Christmas now behind us, people have approached the new year with renewed enthusiasm and we have seen a flurry of What is your house worth? activity from those looking to make big life changes. As a result, this is a great time for homeowners to catch the attention of buyers who, over the festive break, have made the decision to buy a new house in 2016. According to Rightmove, the average house price in Sheffield rose by three per cent last year – with the same predicted for 2016 – and prices are up by around nine per cent on 2010 figures. When coupled with the increased interest in the housing market, and the fact that property supply is currently far outstripping demand, homeowners looking to sell are in a very strong position. So if you’re thinking of moving at some point this year, why not find out what your property is worth? You may be very pleasantly surprised.

GLITZ & GLAMOUR Take inspiration from a decade famed for its bold and brash colours and patterns, writes Phoebe Seymour. ast year’s fashion world was dominated by 1970s style with flares and paisley filling high street stores and its influence slowly crept into our home décor too. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU From stylish technology to the latest superfoods, make sure you’re well-equipped to make your 2016 resolutions last. By Molly McGreevy and Phoebe Seymour.

A

New Year means a new start so many of us vow to be fitter and healthier when January rolls around. But as good as our intentions to eat better and work out more are, we start to lose our way come February. One of the reasons our resolutions fall apart is that health and fitness, like much of modern life, has become a confusing and sometimes overwhelming world. There is a new superfood every week, a different fashionable fitness class being offered each time you enter the gym and at least three news stories a week telling us the latest foods we shouldn’t be eating for fear of causing illness. Here are a couple of ways to stay on track and not get distracted by the health and fitness hype this January.

Get tech fit Wearable fitness technology offers a contemporary solution to the baffling world of keeping fit and healthy, by recording everything, from what you eat for breakfast to how you sleep at night, and every hop, skip and jump in between. Fitness trackers are usually worn around your wrist, and connect to an app on your phone. The most basic count your steps then tell you how many calories you’ve burned, whilst higher end trackers can monitor your heart rate, how you sleep and track runs and cycles. Phone apps can be used to enter the calories you’re eating, and

IMAGEmagazine 28

use the information you enter to tell you if you’re missing any crucial nutrients from your diet. Most fitness trackers are designed to be sleek and stylish, as opposed to the ugly and cumbersome pedometers that are the technology’s closest predecessor. Some look more like watches, with a display face and chunky strap, whilst others are thinner and more discreet. Users shouldn’t be deceived by their fashionable design though, many fitness trackers are prepared for all the elements and can withstand everyday use, and some can be used in water so swimmers can track their activities. There is a whole host of free apps available for wearable fitness technology. Some devices have an app specifically tailored to them, and only users of the technology have access to the app. However, there is still a huge choice of fitness apps to choose from. Sports brand Adidas has created miCoach, an app which turns your phone into a personal trainer. miCoach offers free diet and training plans, motivates you as you exercise, and connects with your wearable to build a detailed picture of your fitness regime. With so many free apps available, and wearable fitness trackers becoming easier to use and more fashionable to wear, keeping fit and healthy has never been as stylish as it will be in 2016. As ever, the tough part comes from within. If you don’t have the willpower to change your lifestyle, all those gadgets won’t count for much. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

IMAGEVALENTINE’S DAY

With the most romantic day of the year fast approaching, Phoebe Seymour looks at the origins of St Valentine’s Day.

All you need is

LOVE

I

t’s fair to say that Valentine’s Day has become the Marmite of the holiday world. Cynics are increasingly annoyed by businesses that use it as a way to shift cards, roses and other gifts, whilst hopeless romantics look forward to expressing their love for their partners (potential or current) and being showered with tokens of love and attention. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no denying that the lovefest known as 14 February is deeply embedded in our cultural calendars and is here to stay. But who was St Valentine and why do we send each other mushy love letters? Read on to discover the origins of Valentine’s Day and why we celebrate it in the way we do.

THE ORIGINAL VALENTINE When it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s difficult to attribute its origins to one man. The Catholic Church recognises three saints with the name Valentine or Valentinus, but at least two of these figures have merged over time. According to one legend, Valentine was a priest who served under Emperor Claudius II during the third century in Rome. Claudius had decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine however, defied Claudius and continued to conduct weddings for young lovers in secret. In another version of the story, Valentine was arrested for helping Christian prisoners escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. Valentine’s actions were soon discovered and Claudius ordered that he be put to death. While in jail, he is said to have converted his jailer by healing his

IMAGEmagazine 34

blind daughter's sight. Then according to a later version, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter and sent her a note signed “From your Valentine” – hence why many of us sign Valentine’s cards in this way today. By the Middle Ages, St Valentine had become one of the most popular saints in England and France. Though it is tricky to separate fact from fiction, these images of St Valentine combined to create the heroic and romantic figure we now associate with all things love.

THE PAGAN FESTIVAL While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial, others think the Christian church decided to place St Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to compete with the pagan festival, Lupercalia. Celebrated between 13 and 15 February, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus. According to History.com, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and

a dog, for purification, before ripping the goat’s hides into strips, dipping them into the sacrificial blood, and then taking to the streets to gently slap both women and crop fields with the hides in order to improve their fertility over the coming year. Some historians have even suggested it was young naked men who walked the streets of Rome spanking the backsides of young women – suddenly the idea of staying home alone on Valentine’s Day with a copy of Fifty Shades doesn’t seem so bad, does it? Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was later outlawed, by towards the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius deemed the festival ‘un-Christian’ and declared 14 February St Valentine’s Day. During the Middle Ages, it was also commonly believed in France and England that 14 February was the beginning the birds mating season, which further solidified Valentine’s Day as a day for romance.

THE RISE OF THE LOVE LETTER Valentine’s greetings were popular from 500AD, but it wasn’t until the 1400s that written Valentines appeared. The oldest known Valentine still in existence today is a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1415, whilst he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated in the UK around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small gifts or handwritten notes and by 1900, printed cards began to replace written letters – most notably, Hallmark who produced their first Valentine’s card in 1913. Today, the Greeting Card Association estimates that 1billion Valentine’s cards are sent every year, making Valentine’s Day the second biggest card-sending holiday of the year (an estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent at Christmas), which just goes to show, there is more love in the world than you might think.

CRAZY, CUPID, LOVE Think you’re all clued up on the season of love? Here are some more romantic facts you may not know about.

ROSES ARE RED, VIOLETS ARE BLUE Sir Edmund Spenser first mentioned the flowers in epic poem, The Faerie Queene in 1590 saying: “She bath'd with roses red, and violets blew/And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.” But it was a poem in Gammer Gurton's Garland, a collection of English nursery rhymes in 1784, which first used the modern cliché: “The rose is red, the violet's blue/The honey's sweet, and so are you.”

CUPID The name Cupid may conjure up a cute winged cherub with a bow and arrow, but in Roman mythology, Cupid is the god of desire, erotic love and attraction. He is often represented as the son of the goddess of love Venus and the god of war Mars. In ancient Greece, he was known as Eros

LEAP YEAR According to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men. The catch? They could only do so every four years on a Leap Day - February 29. Ladies, if you’ve been waiting for that proposal, this month is the time to take the lead.

‘Today, the Greeting Card Association estimates that 1billion Valentine’s cards are sent every year, making Valentine’s Day the second biggest card-sending holiday of the year, which just goes to show, there is more love in the world than you might think.’

IMAGEEATING OUT

COME ON IN You’re sure of a warm welcome at the Hyde Park Inn where the atmosphere is buzzing and the menu is full of delicious homemade food. Words: Phoebe Seymour t can be awkward when you’re an out-oftowner visiting a local pub. There tends to be a clique and you can feel the unwelcome stares from the regular clientele as soon as you enter the room. But at Hyde Park Inn in Dronfield, there’s none of this. Owners Tom and Vee have been running the pub for almost a year and have already managed to establish a mouth-watering menu and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. On this particular Thursday evening, this traditional pub with its contemporary décor was full of families and groups of friends with young children on high chairs and dogs under tables, creating a very relaxed and social vibe. There’s also a fantastic range of homemade pub grub on their menu and specials board, as well as a dedicated steak menu for Meaty Mondays and a varied seafood menu for Fishy Fridays. Now is the time to plan your Christmas party and Hyde Park Inn are currently advertising their festive menu and taking bookings. I started with the battered king prawns accompanied by a sweet chilli sauce, and my dining companion went with the garlic mushrooms. The batter on my prawns was light and bubbly and surprisingly non-greasy, whilst my companion’s mushrooms were presented in aromatic garlic oil with warm crusty bread on the side. A great test when it comes to pub food is

I

IMAGEmagazine 36

the classic pie, so for my main course I chose the homemade steak and ale pie of the day. Topped with a soft crust, filled with tender pieces of meat in a rich gravy and accompanied by chunky chips with a small jug of thick gravy, this certainly passed with flying colours. My companion went with another homemade option, the chilli and rice. With a tomato sauce and a lingering spicy after taste, this dish is a great way to warm up on those cold winter evenings. I finished off with Belgian waffles served with cool vanilla ice cream and lashings of warm chocolate sauce whilst my companion had the highly recommended gingerbread cheesecake. With its crunchy base, melt-in-the-mouth cream layer and golden crunchy toppings, my dining companion was not disappointed. After complimenting the chef, who turned out to be Vee, her partner and co-owner Tom invited us to take part in the Thursday night quiz. But, as tempting as this was, my companion and I were full, content and ready for home. If Hyde Park Inn’s Christmas menu is as delicious as this one, a festive get- together here may well be on the cards. Whether it’s on your door step or a drive away, it’s worth visiting this friendly pub which is sure to warm both your stomach and your heart.

The award was first won in December 2013 after a very busy first year, and they are thrilled to have won this for the third year running. Paul Brown, Director of Saxon Hotels Ltd, said: “There are some fantastic venues in South Yorkshire so to have retained this award is wonderful. To also be voted the top rated country house venue for the UK just shows how hard the team work to ensure every wedding day is perfect for the happy couple. This is great recognition for all of their efforts.”

From refreshed favourites to brand new models, Jordan Cutforth takes a look at what’s new in the motoring world.

Citroen gives refined DS4 a facelift The DS brand is to Citroen what Lexus is to Toyota. It’s the plusher, more upmarket side of the company aimed squarely at those wanting a more luxurious and sophisticated driving experience. Back in 2011 Citroen launched the DS4 – a C4 with added style and a higher price tag to match – now in 2015 they’ve refreshed the ageing line-up with a midlife face-lift with under the skin tweaks making the DS4 more refined and more technologically advanced. Powering the DS4 is a selection of six engines. – three petrol and three diesel. Depending on the engine chosen, the DS4 can manage 74.3mpg and just 100g/km of CO2. There’s a new 208hp petrol unit exclusive for the DS4 too. Prices start from £19,495 or £21,745 for the Crossback.

Mercedes unveils its new SUV Mercedes has a brand-new seven-seater vehicle waiting patiently in the pipeline. It’s called the GLS and Mercedes say it’ll be the ‘S-Class amongst SUVs’. From launch in March 2016, the GLS will only be available with a choice of two

Seat turns up the heat on the Cupra “What!” I hear you say. “How is this a new Ibiza Cupra? Nothing has changed”. On face value you’d be correct. Aesthetically it’s pretty much identical to the previous model, but delve a little deeper and the changes are easily apparent. The main difference with this new Cupra is the engine. Gone is the 1.4litre twin-charged unit and in comes the same 1.8-litre TSI turbocharged engine found in the Polo GTI, which produces 189bhp and 236lb ft of torque. Not only is it more powerful and more efficient than the previous model, but driving enthusiasts will be overjoyed by the fact the Cupra only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include a more upmarket interior and various driver safety tech. On sale in January 2016.

engines, a 3.0-litre V6 diesel (named 350d) and a 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 (named GLS 63). The diesel has 258hp and 457lb ft of torque at its disposal whilst only emitting 199g/km of CO2. The V8 on the other

hand makes 585hp and 561 lb ft of torque. Great to entertain the kids. Bad for the longevity of your licence. Inside is as luxurious as you’d ever want a car to be and it comes with all the latest safety kit. Prices start from £69,100.
