First For Business

PREVIEW

OCTOBER 2015

www.ffb-online.co.uk

PREVIEW T

his month in First For Business we celebrate the vital role being played by entrepreneurship and business start-ups in Sheffield City Region. The return of MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival to Sheffield City Hall brings a packed programme of inspirational speakers, including the man who might appear at first glance to be an unlikely cover star for a business publication. Nevertheless JB Gill’s conversion from singing with boy band JLS to owning and managing his own farm, as well as fronting a children’s BBC show, is likely to provide one of the most inspirational, as well as entertaining, elements of the event when he takes to the podium. JB is one of many keynote speakers from a variety of backgrounds, including leading cookery author and entrepreneur Annabel Karmel MBE, head of digital at Innocent Drinks Joe McEwan and telesales technique master Anthony Stears, who seem to have the happy knack of either creating fabulously successful businesses out of nothing, or inspiring others to strike out and be their own boss. Another major player on the bill is Kevin Byrne, founder and CEO of checkatrade.com. The inspiration for his business came when a tornado swept

through his home town of Selsey, causing £10million worth of damage. When rogue traders attempted to cash in on the misfortunes of local people, Kevin saw the need to create a nationwide collective of reliable traders. MADE celebrates the very best in British business and has become a major event in the entrepreneurial business calendar, attracting leaders from business, government and media. First For Business is proud to be a media partner of MADE 2015 and you can read all about the festival in this issue. To misinformed outsiders, Sheffield may appear to be an unlikely setting to celebrate the vital role played by independent-minded businessmen and women. The old cliché about the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire, coined by a Conservative councillor back in the 1980s, can still lead to the idea that Sheffield just does not care about business and entrepreurship. Statistics tell a different tale, however, with latest figures from StartUp Britain naming Sheffield as seventh in a table of the best UK towns and cities to start a business. We look at some of the reasons why Sheffield is a great place to be your own boss. Also in this issue we talk to Professor

CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR

Lenny Koh, who is about to become cochair of the LEP’s low carbon sector group for the next 12 months. Representing the education sector, Lenny, from the University of Sheffield’s faculty of social sciences management school, will engage with the region’s businesses to understand what industry needs to do to move forward. We also met a selection of other inspiring women who are making their mark on the business world. And our dream team have been putting their heads together to tackle the tricky problem of how to appoint a manager when taking over an existing business. I do hope you enjoy this edition of First For Business. Let us know what you think by tweeting us @ffbmagRMC.

hree months on from the introduction of the new pensions regime it appears that manny people have already taken advantage of their newfound freedoms. Research conducted in the run-up to the changes suggested that 31% of those over the age of 55 were planning to access their pension as soon as the new rules allowed.1 Chancellor George Osborne recentl ntlly repor ted that 60,000 people had withdraawn w over £1 billion from their retirement funds since the rules changed. However, there is a possible sting in the tail for those who are taking pension benefits while still contributing to another pension scheme. But if you do something that triggers a reduction in your annual allowance, it drops from £40,000 to £10,000. A number of different events can create this problem, including when you take your pension as a lump sum.

One way is to buy a traditional annuity. Yoou can take 25% of your pot as tax-free cash and use the rest to buy the annuity. Yoou can then con continue to make tax-efficient contributions up to the maximum annual allowance of £40,000 in future years, assuming you continue to maintain the earnings requirement. This option offers access to your money and your annual allowance isn’t affected until you’re ready to take the remaining 75% as income. This option has the added advantage of enabling your residual fund to continue to grow. A final option is to use the new small pots rule. This allows you to cash in a maximum of three money purchase pensions with an individual value of up to £10,000, although there is no limit on the number of some types of occupational pensions. The first 25% is tax-free and the remaining 75% is taxed at your marginal tax rate. WELCOME TO MADE Be motivated, inspired and educated at this year’s leading entrepreneur festival.

M

ADE:The Entrepreneur Festival is a unique event. It is the UK’s biggest celebration of entrepreneurship and has been specifically designed to educate, inspire, motivate and give attendees the skills to start or grow their own business. This year the festival’s feature conference takes place at Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 22 October (doors open 9am-6pm). Some of the highlights of this year’s programme are: JB Gill, farmer, entrepreneur and former member of boyband JLS; Annabel Karmel, leading cookery author and entrepreneur; Paul Lindley from Ella’s Kitchen, David Coplin of Microsoft UK, Geoff Ramm, marketing

and customer service expert; Kevin Byrne, Checkatrade.com founder and MD (see our separate feature article), Joe McEwan, head of digital at Innocent Drinks; and many, many more. MADE 2015 will blend inspirational success stories with business skills training: customer service, sales, marketing, and social media. All designed to help companies in Sheffield and South Yorkshire win more customers and increase profits. Without a doubt, this is the region’s premier business event, and if you are involved in business then you should be part of it.The programme contains something for all delegate levels – and will be relevant to experienced entrepreneurs

LEARN ABOUT THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY IN BUSINESS A key thought leader for Microsoft, Dave Coplin will be providing an insight into the future of technology in business. His address will demonstrate how we can re-imagine how we live, work and do business. His latest book “The Rise of the Humans” provides a call to action on harnessing the potential that technology offers our society. As the chief envisioning officer of Microsoft UK, and a self-confessed technology “alchemist”, Dave is passionate about turning the base metal of technology into valuable assets that effect the way that we live, learn, work and play and in so doing, move the focus from the technology itself to the actual outcome. His first book: “Business Reimagined”, provided a view of a new working environment based on collaborative and flexible working. At MADE, Dave will also discuss how small businesses could in fact increase their productivity by using technology in the right way and removing the stresses that can be caused by technology not working for the user. An issue I am sure we can all identify with.

and business owners, team managers, directors, and junior staff members, as well as those thinking about starting their own company. Tickets are now on sale online at www.madefestival.com. Standard ticket prices are just £50, and a reduced rate of £15 is offered for students and other concessions. In this article we are highlighting some of the speakers at this year’s conference. There are so many key appearances throughout the day it is difficult to know where to start, but we have chosen to pick out a few special guests – some of whom are making their “MADE” debut, and others who have been invited back due to popular demand.

ANNABEL KARMEL MBE, LEADING CHILDREN’S COOKERY AUTHOR & ENTREPRENEUR Annabel’s chosen quote for MADE sums up her story perfectly: “Entrepreneurship is not a part-time job. It’s not even a full-time job. It’s a lifestyle.” We don’t think any of our guests have become as synonymous with their business as Annabel. A prolific author, she has now had no less than 38 books published on the topic of feeding babies, toddlers and families, as well as eating during pregancy and cooking with children. Her business interests include a range of food products which are sold in every major supermarket across the country, and her menus are available in some of the largest restaurant chains, leisure parks, and nurseries across the UK serving up more than one million meals per year. Annabel’s latest book – Mumpreneur – focuses not only on her story but also features case studies on famous female entrepreneurs such as Jaqueline Gold, Thea Green, and Chrissie Rucker.

over the world that others simply miss. Renowned as the ‘Billy Connolly’ of service and marketing, he receives rave reviews from corporate clients, associations as well as entrepreneurial audiences for his fastpaced, high interaction. With hundreds of observational ideas, images, videos and stories, Geoff’s presentation will ensure a lasting impact and high takeaway value. Geoff will draw on his entrepreneurs to launch start-up enterprises without a budget and has created marketing ideas which have become legend. His clients include: Honda, TATA, Toyota, SAGE, Tiger Brands, Goldwell and Chrysler. He’s the youngest ever President of the Professional Speaking Association UK and also a member of the Global Speakers Federation and a recipient of the PSAE (Excellence) award in 2014, as well as being a UK Enterprise Ambassador.

KILLER TELESALES TECHNIQUES WITH THE “TELEPHONE ASSASSIN” One of our masterclass presenters at MADE this year is Anthony Stears, the self-styled “Telephone Assassin”. From his very first business venture (making a tidy profit selling his dad’s prize possessions through an impromptu “garage sale”), Anthony has always showed a talent for direct selling. Following an awardwinning stint as an estate agent, Anthony developed his skills by selling targeted data profiling services to blue-chip clients, a

role which taught him about the psychology of communication and the power of our voice and bodylanguage on others. With a growing waiting list of clients Anthony decided to begin running specialist training workshops designed to help people responsible for generating leads but who wouldn’t consider themselves a sales professional (ie the vast majority of people in small businesses).

Sheffield’s own Paul Lindley will be sharing his latest insight into establishing and growing a business. Paul will reflect on his experience with Ella’s Kitchen and Paddy’s Bathroom to give some high value advice for business managers, leaders and fellow entrepreneurs. Paul’s life changed with a simple answerphone message in 2005. Left for him by UK supermarket group Sainsbury’s, it said simply: “We are going to take a flyer on you.” It meant that four months later Sainsbury’s was going to start stocking Paul’s baby food brand, Ella’s Kitchen, at 350 of its stores across the country. So the first Ella’s Kitchen products arrived on Sainsbury’s shelves in early 2006 and were an immediate hit. Soon the UK’s other supermarkets were also stocking the brand.

Today, Oxfordshire-based Ella’s Kitchen is the UK’s best-selling baby food company, and its annual global turnover exceeds £100million. Three years after Ella’s Kitchen was first stocked by Sainsbury’s, it started to sell overseas, first to Sweden, Norway and the US. While the US business was successful, the brand faced a number of copycat rivals in the American market. In 2013 Paul agreed to sell Ella’s Kitchen to US food company Hain Celestial for $103.5million (£66million). Under the terms of the deal Mr Lindley has remained in the top job at Ella’s Kitchen, and divides his time between the UK and the US.

JOE McEWAN, HEAD OF DIGITAL AT INNOCENT DRINKS Joe McEwan began working for Innocent in 2007 and has dedicated all of his time there to building a thriving two-way relationship with Innocent’s community of drinkers. A knowledgeable keynote speaker, he tells of his job as head of digital and communities – responsible for all forms of online content creation and consumer contact, with the stated mission of making sure that innocent maintains an open, honest and interesting line of communication with the people who drink the drinks. He tells the story of how Innocent came to be one of the top three fastest-growing companies in the UK. It’s a story involving entrepreneurial ability, original marketing and fruit by the bucket load. Joe focuses on how Innocent has come to be regarded as one of the greatest start-ups of the last decade, a business with a reputation for understanding how best to speak to consumers and make them feel valued. He shows the benefits to be gained by always investing in the little things, and always listening to the people that buy your stuff. Joe believes good business needn’t be complicated, and he’s proud to work for a company that continues to listen and learn from its consumers. He is one of our masterclass presenters at MADE 2015.

JB GILL – SINGER AND ENTREPRENEUR Former JLS band member, JB Gill shocked the world when, at the age of just 26, he left the celebrity lifestyle behind to start his own farm. Two years on and JB has never looked back with the farm he owns and manages going from strength to strength. JB also presents a children’s BBC TV show from his farm. JB is a strong advocate for entrepreneurship and has worked with Rockstar Youth to help encourage 18-30 year olds to start their own business. We are looking forward to JB telling his unusual story and hearing his plans for developing his business interests in the future.

SHEFFIELD STUDENTS TURN ‘WEBPRENEURS’ WITH TWO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES

T

wo Sheffield Hallam University students have seen their creative design and marketing agency become so successful that they’ve expanded their portfolio with a sister company focusing on website hosting, telecoms and broadband. Daniel Hawksworth, 24, was just 18 when he set up his first creative business. While studying Computer Information Security at Sheffield Hallam he established a second – Hawkify UK – and moved his existing clients to the new company. He employed fellow student George Dorman, 21, and the two later became partners in the business. By adopting a personal approach and applying the skills learnt both inside and outside university, Daniel and George have grown the business to the point where it now employs seven people and has had to move into larger premises. The pair have also recently set up Hawkify

Internet. “Prior to university I had experience of running a business but my skills have developed so much more and I’ve had the backing of the Enterprise Team in setting up Hawkify UK and Hawkify Internet,” said Daniel. “The businesses have grown much quicker than we ever could have anticipated and we put that down to our personal approach. Clients have a named contact – many deal with me personally – and they get the support the need. We’re now working with a number of local companies from start-ups to multi-million pound organisations.”

FIRM FOUNDATIONS THE LONG-HELD PERCEPTION THAT SHEFFIELD DID NOT CARE ABOUT BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS NO MORE, AS THE CITY HAS NOW BECOME INCREASINGLY POPULAR FOR START-UPS, WRITES ANDY WAPLE. heffield and its wider region isn’t considered to be the most business friendly of locations thanks to an infamous remark made in the 1980s by Irvine Patnick, then a conservative member of the South Yorkshire County Council.

S

When the lone Tory coined the phase “Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire” he was remonstrating against ruling left wing politicians of the day, whose radical policies were considered to be dragging the region into the mire. How mud sticks. It’s 30 years seen Margaret Thatcher abolished the county council, yet many outsiders – and those within – still believe Sheffield just does not care about business and entrepreneurship. Statistics paint a very different picture, however. Latest figures from StartUp Britain, the government-backed national campaign for entrepreneurs led by entrepreneurs, ranks Sheffield seventh in a table of the best UK towns and cities to start a business. It found that 8,052 new businesses were created in Sheffield in 2014 compared with 6,551 start-ups the year before. Leeds trailed 12th in the list. It is clear that starting a business has become more popular in recent years for a number reasons. Some put it down to the ease of home working and even TV programmes such as Dragons Den that have made the concept of entrepreneurship trendy. “Starting a business is easier, quicker and

12

cheaper than ever thanks to new technology,” said Luke Johnson, the chairman of the Centre for Entrepreneurs.

more personal one-to-one meetings with a business coach.

“Entrepreneurs have higher profiles than in the past and are seen as role models. Traditional jobs for life have largely disappeared, as have occupational pensions.”

If you are a successful business person reading this, you could play your part in continuing Sheffield’s economic revival by offering your services to Business Sheffield as a role model by giving a talk on your own experience of setting up your business.

Sheffield also has a reputation – and data to support it – that many graduates remain in the city after their time at the two universities because they fall in love with its quality of life. Many of these are the bedrock of the new spirit of entrepreneurism that has breathed new life into the city’s multi-faceted economy.

Established businesses looking to grow can make use of the off-shoot, the Enterprise Programme, that provides tailored support, including professional, IT and technical advice, sales and marketing guidance, business mentoring and access to potential non-executive directors.

Yet anybody who has started a business, and many who seek to grow in the early years, soon realise they need expert business support to make a success of their ventures.

Larger companies, including those inward-bound, can draw on Business Sheffield’s database of commercial property for those looking for workspace or offices.

There is plenty of such support available in the Sheffield region – and it is this assistance that has proved pivotal in growing the numbers of new businesses.

What really sets the city and its wider region apart in terms of its support for businesses are the two universities.

The first point of call for many people is Business Sheffield, the support agency run by the city council backed organisation, Creative Sheffield. It has survived budget issues to continue to give free support to those looking to start a business, become self-employed or expand, offering sound advice, honest appraisals and invaluable assistance on the formulation of business plans, pricing, accountancy and tax issues. Weekly drop-in days – information sessions that are helpful for ironing out little niggles – are at hand along with

Both the University of Sheffield and Hallam University are serious players in business creation and their combined expertise is mind-blowing. Sheffield University Management School, once more a main event sponsor for this year’s MADE: Entrepreneur Festival this month, is the main link between the university and the business community. The support it can provide can make a real difference to a company’s performance. Where else could a business source an academic who can apply their research to a company’s development

It’s an offer grasped by a growing number of companies across the sectors and is creating wealth, jobs and opportunities. The Management School sends its students out on placement to local business, many of them SMEs, and the result is often a “win-win” with students benefitting from experience when companies put them to work on specialist projects which they don’t have the expertise or time to pursue on their own. Another part of business creation stemming from the University of Sheffield is University Sheffield Enterprise, an organisation that helps its students and former learners get on the ladder as business start-ups by offering the full range of services from workshops, events, mentoring, business planning, grants, loans, funding, skill building, support, further study, information, networking and even room bookings.

It helps people get their businesses off the ground by giving them access to unused buildings in the city centre. Meanwhile, Hallam University’s Sheffield Business School which supports students and local companies continues to assist local companies and create its own headlines at the same time. It has just been shortlisted for the second year running for ‘Business School of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education (THE) awards. Hallam boasts the largest modern business school in Britain with around 8,000 students studying a range of business subjects. It is active in more than 30 international markets and is one of the largest placement suppliers in the country, with companies as diverse as Marks & Spencer, GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls-Royce. Meanwhile Hallam’s Enterprise Team, which supports any student or past graduate of up to five years with advice from experts and office space,

workshops and funding, has a new success story to tell. Former student Leon Reed’s whose app, The Meal Wheel, designed to introduce people to new restaurants and cafes in their area, can be now downloaded from the Apple app store. Leon, aged 27, who moved to Sheffield in 2008 to study Fine Art and still lives in the city, said: “It can be used by anyone, anywhere in the world who can’t decide where to eat. “Even if you’re on holiday and in new surroundings The Meal Wheel can find you a little bit of food heaven in unfamiliar places. “Having an idea for an app, designing and developing it into the vision you had then letting the whole world see what you’ve come up with just by clicking download is incredible,” added Leon. The app will be available for Android users in November, when it will be officially launched. He is also behind the Breadbreadbread and Christmas Dinners apps.

Rob Moore

OUR DREAM TEAM ADVISES ON RECRUITING A MANAGER TO RUN YOUR BUSINESS. ROB MOORE RECOVERY EXPERT AND PARTNER AT TAYLOR & EMMETT I see that you are considering purchasing a profitable existing business although you do not state what that business is. Nevertheless, if you are going to appoint a manager, getting the right person is critical. Your manager will not only supervise your employees but will also have to make important decisions that will directly affect the future profitability of the business. There are certain qualities which any manager must have. First and foremost, your manager must understand the importance of appreciating and respecting your employees. If your employees are demonstrably appreciated this will boost their morale and lead to better performance, which will, of course, maintain and increase the profitability of your new business. Your manager must understand the business and be in a position to provide the employees with the resources they need to do their jobs. It can be extremely demotivating for employees if they are asked to carry out tasks and meet goals without receiving the proper support and resources. Consequently, your manager must be able to properly train your employees how to use the latest technology, how to work in teams and provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to grow the business. Another crucial quality your manager will need is the knowledge to compete effectively. You will need to be satisfied that your manager is aware of all the current issues affecting your business and

14

DEAR DREAM TEAM:

or its sector, I am assuming that it is of a significant enough size to pay an MD.

I would like to purchase an existing business that is already generating a profit. However, I do not want to manage it as I have other commitments in my current job. What qualities and experience should I be looking for in a manager if I do go through with the buy?

When looking to recruit a manager, I believe that you should first look at the required outcomes, and what success would look like for the business five years down the road. What core values are required? What behaviours are you looking for from the successful applicant?

be able to react appropriately to ensure your it remains competitive in the face of changes to legislation, technology or customers. Your manager must be a good listener. It is essential that he spends time listening to the employees. This should make your employees feel that their opinion is valued and good ideas can be implemented or problems headed off. Your manager must know how to develop your staff by focusing on their strengths. The manager must also be good at delegating tasks. Being able to delegate not only make a more efficient and effective manager, but it also creates a more productive team. Finally, your manager must be a good leader and must have the ability to direct, motivate and lead your employees.

KEVIN KERLEY CHAIRMAN, ACADEMY OF CHIEF EXECUTIVES I own a business that I do not run and I can empathise with your situation. Though you do not hint at the size of the business

You would then need to look at the skill sets of the team and consider whether there is a skills gap that you would need the new manager to bridge. For instance, is there a business development manager, or will the MD need to carry out this role and, therefore, need sales experience? The qualities and experience required by the person you are looking for will differ from business to business dependent on its size, market sector, number of employees, management structure and ambitions of the shareholders for growth. If I were in your shoes, having decided on the behaviours that I was looking for, I would then employ the use of psychometric testing (I like to use The Colour Works, but there are many other programmes available to use) as part of the recruitment process. Finally, the most important factor for me would be the chemistry between yourself and the new manager. How trustworthy do they seem and how authentic are they? You need complete peace of mind and trust in the individual if you are not going to be involved in the day-to-day running of the business, formalising a dashboard that will give you the KPI`s and ensuring that these are reported accurately to you consistently. This will allow you to keep a close eye on the performance of the business from afar.

THE LOAN ARRANGER FINANCE FOR ENTERPRISE PROVIDES FINANCE FOR START-UPS. HERE’S HOW IT HELPED TWO FLEDGLING COMPANIES. FIREHOUSE FITNESS Finance For Enterprise’s 100th Start Up Loan client, Firehouse Fitness, was established by Robert McGuigan and Dennis Roebuck; both serving firefighters for South Yorkshire Fire Service. Starting from a local rugby field and with limited equipment, the first Firehouse Fitness session received a great response. Increasing in popularity on a week to week basis, Robert and Dennis agreed a more permanent base was needed to develop the business further. Firehouse Fitness creates a unique functional fitness training centre for individuals who have a passion for health, fitness and well-being. It offers both personal and group High Intensity Training (HIT) sessions with an added firefighter twist.

LITTLE LULU’S Designed by Catriona Alfaham, Little Lulu’s is an eco-friendly brand of luxury leather baby shoes, made by a master craftsman in Italy in the finest soft Italian nappa (lamb/kid skin). The ‘pram shoes’ or ‘pre walkers’ are aimed at babies aged up to 18 months. With a love of shoes, Catriona knew from an early age she wanted to study shoe design and qualified in Footwear and Accessories Design at Cordwainers College – London College of Fashion. She has 11 years’ experience in the fashion industry, specifically with handbags, and specialising in shoes later on in her career. Her work has taken her all around the world and she worked in Hong Kong for a number of years designing faux leather high fashion handbags.

16

Both highly credible individuals, Robert has 12 years’ experience in the industry, and has studied Sport and Exercise, obtained an honours degree and went on to achieve a diploma in Personal Training. Dennis has 13 years as an operational Firefighter and four years’ experience of working in the fitness industry as a Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer. Dennis has diplomas in Outdoor Training, Nutrition and Sports Conditioning. He is also a qualified athletics coach with experience of working within youth sports across South Yorkshire. Speaking about the Start Up Loan obtained via Finance For Enterprise, Robert said: “The loan will transform what we are able to offer. We have already established a really strong brand by using Now settled in Sheffield, Catriona’s passion for shoes was reignited after she became a mother herself and started shopping for her little girl Layla. She started Little Lulu’s to suit her lifestyle and the business quickly progressed from there. Having created her designs Catriona travelled to Italy and sought out a master craftsman to start production. She was recently recognised for her talents and won the Rising Star Award at Bubble London – the UK’s leading children’s trade show. She fought off stiff completion and

the fire service as our unique USP. The funding will enable us to grow the brand further, whether that be through franchising or opening up additional facilities. In terms of immediate impact the money has enabled us to lease premises and obtain equipment to offer a more traditional apparatus based training in addition to our core focus.” Referring to the process of obtaining the funding Robert added: “It was really straightforward. Our advisor, Mike Gregg, was fantastic. He was really supportive and always there for us whenever we needed any advice.” firehousefitness.co.uk Email: info@firehousefitness.co.uk was awarded the title for her exquisite designs and clean, playful branding that complimented her designs beautifully. Catriona applied to Finance For Enterprise for a Start Up Loan to get her business off the ground and has been amazed at the support the organisation has given her. “Gaining the loan gave me so much more than just the finances I needed to start the business,” she said. “It has been an expensive process and I couldn’t have done it without this financial support. I also gained valuable mentoring from some super advisors. This helped me write my business plan and organise my ideas. It also boosted my confidence because others believed that this was a viable business too. I continue to get support and guidance through Finance For Enterprise, which I am very grateful for.” www.little-lulus.com Email: catriona@little-lulus.com

INTERVIEW

OCTOBER 2015

www.ffb-online.co.uk

CHECK HIM OUT AT MADE KEVIN BYRNE’S CRUSADE TO STEM THE TIDE OF ROGUE TRADERS HAS LED TO HIM BECOMING ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S LEADING ENTREPRENEURS. s the date for Sheffield’s largest entrepreneurial festival edges ever closer, the MADE team have released details of guest speaker Kevin Byrne, the founder of Checkatrade.com, the multi-million pound business which was founded by a graphic designer following a major disaster.

A

Kevin Byrne is the founder and CEO of Checkatrade.com, which provides access to trusted, vetted and monitored tradespeople to stem the tide of rogue traders. He is a leading entrepreneur and businessman in the south east, who built his Selsey-based company up from scratch to one with a turnover in excess of £13.4million, 18,200 members across a wide spectrum of trades and over 220 employees. Kevin’s life-changing moment came in 1998 when a tornado swept through his hometown of Selsey causing £10million of destruction. Rogue traders descended on the vulnerable and, witnessing this with horror, Kevin set up Checkatrade. Multi-award-winning Checkatrade.com has become a monumental success. Over the past 12 months, its members carried out a combined total of £2.7billion worth of work, with complaints at just one in 200, compared to the national average of one in five.

18

Checkatrade is also the proud sponsor of the National Weather on ITV’s Good Morning Britain and Cowboy Builders on Channel 5. In 2012, Kevin was part of the judging panel for the Startups Awards, which recognise the UK’s most creative, innovative and ambitious new businesses and entrepreneurs, with Duncan Bannatyne and the enterprise editor of The Daily Telegraph. He has also participated in “Entrepreneurs”, the leading annual conference for successful and fast growth business owners, alongside former US President Bill Clinton who delivered the keynote speech. Kevin was on a debating panel with leading broadcaster Julie Meyer (Ariadne Capital) discussing motivation and inspiration leadership techniques in business. Kevin is the authoritative voice on honest, reputable trading and keen to share the secrets of his business success with future entrepreneurs and business owners. He is active in the media, with comments published in the The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Times and on Moneymaker.com. Kevin has also featured in radio interviews with the BBC and other independent stations, as well as on

entrepreneurial videos on sites such as Smallbusiness.co.uk. He has become a community figurehead thanks to his inspirational business leadership and charity work. MADE asked Kevin what advice he would give to people starting a business; he said: “Take risks, nine times out of ten, go with your gut feeling, you need passion to start a business, your business will mature, flourish and grow with your passion.” Kevin adds: “Iron sharpens iron and motivation is invaluable. Finding somewhere you can obtain iron and motivation is very difficult. As one of the speakers, I’m not just going to turn up for my slot and leave, I am there for the whole day, I see the MADE Entrepreneur Festival as a key to future growth of my company. I am excited and expectant. I’d encourage all in business or thinking of going into business to make sure it is in their diary. I hope to see many, many businesses from Sheffield and the wider area participating and working on developing their business.” Kevin Speaks at MADE Festival on 22 October at Sheffield City Hall. 10 THINGS...

OCTOBER 2015

www.ffb-online.co.uk

10 THINGS... TO ENGAGE YOUR EMPLOYEES BY NIGEL RISNER. he only motivational speaker in Europe to have been awarded Speaker of the Year from The Academy for Chief Executives, The Executive Committee and Footdown, Nigel Risner is a respected author, television presenter and a prolific speaker.

T

He set up his own independent finance brokerage at the age of 21 with the total sum of £12.80 capital. With massive growth that made him one of the youngest CEOs, he subsequently bought his partner out for £1.5million and raised equity finance of approximately £2.5million. After securing venture capital, his company, Milbourne, become the largest independent brokerage in the country. This became the first of many companies that Nigel set up. He has not only had the experience of working with people but dealing with challenges that thankfully most people have not had to experience. Nigel will be hosting MADE 2015 on 22 October.

contributes towards the company achieving its goals.

ADDRESS INEFFECTIVE TEAMWORK 3

Working as part of an effective team can lead to impressive improvements in morale and motivation. Unfortunately the converse is also true. Even the most self-motivated individual cannot maintain enthusiasm if they are part of a dysfunctional team that is ‘not playing nice in the sand pit’.

BE A ROLE MODEL FOR YOUR ORGANISATION 4

The attitude and behaviour of the leader sets the tone for the whole organisation. Your employees are constantly watching you and will take your lead if you are enthusiastic. At times this may mean that you need to pump yourself up, or use the services of a colleague or coach to keep you motivated and focused.

COMMUNICATE WITH EVERYONE RESPECTFULLY 5

KNOW AND CARE ABOUT THE CONCERNS OF YOUR EMPLOYEES 1

Do they feel appreciated and listened to? Take the time to talk to them and discuss their priorities and desires. Frequent informal conversations will help you know more about them as individuals and enable you to better understand what really motivates each of your employees.

DEVELOP AND COMMUNICATE A COMPELLING ORGANISATIONAL VISION 2

People become motivated if they are excited about the purpose and goals of the organisation and how they can contribute towards achieving them. If you communicate a clear vision with passion and enthusiasm you will rally the troops. Each employee needs to understand how their own work

Treating people with respect is at the heart of building business relationships. Give people the freedom to be themselves and choose how to achieve the agreed upon results.

6 PROVIDE EMPLOYEES WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE CREATIVE People will feel more motivated if they work in an environment where they are challenged and still have the opportunity to innovate. Give people freedom to make decisions. Encourage collaborative problem solving. Develop strong skills in delegation. Solicit their opinion and feedback on the issues and challenges you cannot delegate entirely to them.

INVEST IN DEVELOPING EMPLOYEES 7

Demonstrate that you care about your

employees’ success by providing opportunities for them to grow professionally. Recommend books and articles that are useful resources. Provide an adequate training budget and encourage its use. Recommend the support of a business coach or mentor. Allow employees to spend some time on projects that they care about...even if they are outside their standard responsibilities.

8 REGULARLY RECOGNISE AND REWARD EFFORT AND RESULTS Look for opportunities to acknowledge and celebrate successes...even the small ones. Be specific in your praise so that they know what behaviour has contributed to the overall success of the organisation.

ENSURE COMPENSATION AND OTHER REWARDS AND BENEFITS ARE FAIR 9

There are a number of extrinsic rewards that have a short-term impact on motivation. Salary increases, company stock options, bonuses, vacation days or upgrades to the work environment will be appreciated by your employees. However all of these basic motivational tools can become ‘de-motivators’ if they are not used fairly. Employees will compare their compensation packages with others, and will become discouraged if they perceive inequities.

ENSURE THAT THE RIGHT PERSON IS DOING THE RIGHT TASK AND FULLY UNDERSTANDS THEIR ROLE 10

This is perhaps one of the most often overlooked areas of motivation because it requires us to step back from the day to day and take a more holistic and strategic view of the business. Getting the right people in the right role and then ensuring that their responsibilities and expectations are clear is a critical foundation for success.

Delegates at last year’s MADE event

YOUR BUSINESS CAN MAKE IT… AT MADE IN THE FIVE YEARS SINCE ITS INCEPTION MADE: THE ENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL, HAS EDUCATED AND INSPIRED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF BUSINESS OWNERS AND BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS. HERE, WOSSKOW BROWN FOUNDATION’S PROGRAMME DIRECTOR JIM LAWSON EXPLAINS WHY ATTENDING THE EVENT IS A MUST FOR ANY LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER OR ENTREPRENEUR.

M

ADE is fantastic for Sheffield and the whole of the city region because it has become the entrepreneur event for the UK and it is rooted right here, in the heart of the city. There are around 3,000 entrepreneurs in town on the same day or two; there can be no better time to build up your business networks.

20

deal of activity taking place outside of the main conference on 22 October.I have been involved with MADE for the last five years helping to develop this fringe, putting some great events on that do not clash with the main speaker programme.

The programme is devised in such a way that it is appealing to everyone in business; there is something for start-ups, something for scale-ups and something for the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Last year, we put on a successful business growth event with Barclays, chaired and facilitated by Jamie Veitch. This year we will, once again, run a business growth event which this time will take the form of three TED talks, covering leadership, digital marketing and scaling up.

MADE always features an excellent lineup of speakers, but as well as this there is a very strong fringe event, with a great

The leadership talk will be given by Toby Bassford, who is currently helping to set up the UK operation of Giant

Worldwide, a transformational leadership company based in the USA. The digital marketing talk will be delivered by local entrepreneur Dan Brookman who has been in business from the age of about 17 and now runs digital marketing company Airship. We also have a great speaker – yet to be officially announced – for the talk on scaling up.

WHY SCALING UP IS SO IMPORTANT A bit of a buzz term at the moment, ‘scale-ups’ are effectively established businesses that have the potential to grow significantly.

020 - 021 FFB Oct15_Layout 1 02/10/2015 10:44 Page 2

GROWTH

Sherry Coutu’s 2014 scale-up report on UK economic growth presented evidence that the majority of net employment growth comes from a relatively small number of highly productive, fast growing firms. Coutu identified scale-ups as businesses with at least 10 employees which have the ability to grow by 20 per cent year on year for three years. The real key to ensuring these businesses grow as quickly and successfully as possible is providing adequate wrap-around support. According to Coutu, scale-up leaders need four main areas of support: access to private finance, access to flexible rent arrangements, super-fast broadband and access to like-minded entrepreneurs. MADE certainly delivers access to other entrepreneurs and access to finance.

‘IT’S LIKE GLASTONBURY FOR BUSINESS’ This is what someone said about a previous MADE event; and it makes so much sense. There is a great buzz to it, people come from all over to go to it and it gets busier every year. It is all about maximising new connections and building relationships over that week. If you come to MADE you are going to meet so many people who you wouldn’t usually get a chance to meet, many of whom are on the same journey as you. You will also meet professionals who can help you grow your business, such as IP attorneys, lawyers, accountants and support organisations. Going back to scale-ups, these businesses need leaders with the ability and willingness to invest in their own leadership skills. Typically, these are entrepreneurs who go out and invest in their own skills then use these skills to build their management team. Knowing where to start can often be the hardest step; and MADE can prove an ideal starting point. With all kinds of business support under one roof as well as a programme of fringe activity involving useful workshops, now could be the time to begin your scaling up journey.

AVOID THAT ‘MORNING AFTER’ FEELING We’ve all been there. Attended a business event, listened eagerly to the speakers, jotted down notes, gone away feeling inspired… then turned up to the office

Speakers at last year’s event included Michelle Mone (left) and Paul McKenna

the next day only to be immediately greeted with tons of queries and a backlog of work to catch up on from a day or two away from your desk. Here are my top tips to get the most out of MADE and return to your office ready and able to take action.

1

Delegate This starts before you leave the office. Where possible arrange for someone else to deal with straightforward queries in your absence so you don’t have a pile of simple but time-consuming jobs to attend to when you arrive back.

2

Plan Look at the schedule in advance and book yourself on to as many workshops as your schedule permits. There is a big push on exporting this year so if you think there is potential to sell your products outside of this country then make sure you sign up and take advantage of the free advice.

3 Network. It’s an obvious one but do it as much as possible. A real value contact can be priceless. You might not need them right now but you could do in the future. 4

Collect cards. Again, it may sound obvious but make sure you take a business card from everyone you chat to; even if it is just someone you make small talk with.

Everyone at MADE is involved in doing business and wants to do business.

5

Connect. Once you get back to the office – or even on the train on your way home – make sure you connect with the people you have met. Drop them an invitation on LinkedIn or send them a quick email letting them know it was good to meet them. Never forget the old adage of ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’. It’s not always the case but it never hurts to have plenty of contacts.

LOOKING FORWARD Finally, I’d like to point out that this year the Wosskow Brown Foundation – launched at the beginning of 2015 by Wosskow Brown to provide practical help, inspiration and opportunities for people to reach their ambitions – is offering to act as a ‘clearing house’ for anyone who visits MADE and loses a connection or is struggling to find a way to take something forward. As a foundation we have hundreds of connections in business, charity, social enterprise and sport. So whether you are based within the region or have visited from outside, we’re more than happy to be contacted by people who wish to connect with an individual or organisation in this area and help further strengthen business activity within the region and beyond.

Weekly visitors to the Moor Market have increased from 54,000 to 56,000 in last 13 weeks and the range of pop-up shops is proving popular with local businesses wanting a city centre base to trade from. The new pop-up shops offer businesses a creative way of showcasing their wares to city centre shoppers in a simple but cost effective way. There are five kitsch market barrows available to rent at £25 a day to new or existing stallholders looking to pitch up in the market foyer. Matt Cockayne, of Goo-Design, who recently rented a barrow said: “I came to the Moor Market to launch my market exhibition so it was a brilliant opportunity to bring along a host of my prints, t-shirts, mugs and phone covers to showcase to shoppers at the same time.

“I do the majority of my business online so it was really nice to get out and show what I do to people first hand. “The barrows are eye-catching and interesting for customers. I’d definitely rent one again and would encourage other businesses to have a go too. It’s a really cheap alternative to having a stall or shop premises and for getting your business known to a different audience.” The Moor Market is also currently offering reduced rents on stalls. businesses and artisan traders who are looking for an outlet to sell their products can’t always afford to rent a stall or open their own shop so the popup shop is a great way for them to test the market and to raise their profile. “We ran an exciting schedule of summer events and are also planning our autumn promotions and Christmas events. This is an exciting time of year for potential traders to join us at our busiest time of year. “We’ve already got a wide selection of stalls at the market but we’d love to see even more independent, artisan traders and pop-up businesses renting our barrows or joining us on a permanent basis. SheffEX:

THE PLACE TO BE… RICHARD CABORN SET TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT CITY’S FESTIVAL OF BUSINESS

A

fter the overwhelming success of the first three events, the countdown is on to the fourth SheffEX festival, tipped to be bigger and better than ever before. Helping to ensure SheffEX is the only place to be on Monday 7 December, former sports minister Richard Caborn will be giving a speech to delegates. Currently one of the most talked about individuals in the Sheffield city region, Mr Caborn is heavily involved in some of the city’s most ambitious projects, including the Olympic Legacy Park, City Centre 2050 and Factory 2050, the first building on a new advanced manufacturing park on the site of the former Sheffield Airport. Of course, it was Mr Caborn who also secured £6m of Government funding 15 years ago for the original and phenomenally successful Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). Tony Carroll, who organises SheffEX along with brothers Mark and Andy McCormick, said: “We are delighted that SheffEX has firmly made its mark and

attracted someone as prominent as Richard Caborn to come along and speak to the business community. “One of the key aims of SheffEX is to give local companies a platform to shout about how great they are at what they do and how fabulous a city Sheffield is. Mr Caborn has achieved some incredible things for the city and is the perfect individual to help highlight some of the excellent activities going on within the business community, not only in Sheffield but across the city region.” Sponsored by Business Sheffield, the idea for SheffEX came about out of frustration that as a city Sheffield does not do enough to promote itself. The first event took place in June 2014 and proved such a success that a second event was soon planned for December of the same year. The third SheffEX took place in June of this year and on the day businesses were already signing up to secure their place for this December. Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and

Industry, HR Media, Fortay Media, One2Call, Leo Wealth Management, Hart Shaw, The Children’s Hospital Charity, Wosskow Brown, Evoluted, The Met Club, Parcelhub, Franks & Co, Connect Gazelles and Identity Merchandise are just some of the confirmed exhibitors for the upcoming event. As well as the main exhibition SheffEX will offer exciting networking opportunities and a line-up of influential speakers, to be announced in the weeks leading up to the event. Business workshops will also be taking place throughout the day, giving delegates the opportunity to learn new skills or refresh their knowledge on a range of useful topics. For the first time, this year’s event will also include a retail Christmas Fair, with a selection of market stalls selling festive goods, gifts and produce.

SheffEX takes place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre from 9.30am to 4pm on Monday 7 December. Entry is free for pre-registered delegates. To register visit www.sheffex.com. 24

WHAT IT COSTS Costs for exhibiting are: Market Place stand (1.75m wide x 1.5m deep) ÂŁ295, High Street stand (3m wide x 2m deep) ÂŁ575, Deluxe stand (4.5m wide x 2m deep) ÂŁ775.

HOW BEING AT SheffEX CAN BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS Exhibiting at SheffEX makes business sense By securing a place at SheffEX you will put yourself and your business in front of new contacts and have the potential to turn them into customers. The previous three events have all been sell-outs, attracting around 120 exhibitors and well in excess of 1,500 delegates.

As an exhibitor not only will you get to showcase your business and its products/services but you will also be listed on the SheffEX website. Exhibitor costs are affordable, due to the insistence of the organisers that the event is for all local businesses, regardless of size. “It is very important to us that SheffEX is accessible to every business in the area

and for this reason we will always keep costs for exhibitors at a minimum, said Tony. “Part of our remit is to also support good causes in Sheffield so we offer a number of free stands to local organisations which do great work in the region to give them the opportunity to showcase what they do to local business people.

ONLINE MARKETING

START WORKING WITH GOOGLE - NOT AGAINST IT, SAY HYDRA CREATIVE

CASH IN ON THOSE CLICKS t is 2015 and search engine marketing has changed forever – as a result of Google’s vastly improved ability to serve highly relevant and spam free search results.

I

Just three to four years ago, searchers were commonly forced to wade through pages and pages of spam, created by sneaky SEOs or even hackers, to get to the websites they wanted. The real winners during the ‘wild west’ era of the internet were often the cowboys – those who were willing to try to cheat Google’s rankings system to get on to page one. Now, savvy search engine marketers will tell you those tactics could get your website banned from Google and do long-term damage to your business. Unfortunately, a by-product of the changes is that it is harder for firms to challenge big brands who often dominate Google’s page one. And while legitimate SEO techniques still play an important role in online marketing strategies, it’s now pay-per-click advertising which often represents the most cost effective way of reaching your customers online. AdWords is Google’s version of pay-perclick advertising, and it’s almost guaranteed that some of your competitors are using this platform to reach your customers. As an approved Google Partner agency, we’re very keen to dispel some common myths about using the AdWords programme.

GOOGLE ADWORDS WON’T WORK FOR MY BUSINESS It almost certainly will. There’s no business in the world which doesn’t benefit from being seen by more customers. Whether your business is online or offline, a well-managed AdWords account is guaranteed to lead to more calls, enquiries, emails and sales.

WE’VE TRIED IT ALREADY AND WE DIDN’T GET ANY RESULTS It is very easy to dip a toe into the world of AdWords. However it is very unlikely the basic settings will be optimal, resulting in a low ‘Quality Score’ – which has a dramatic effect on how much you pay-per-click, and therefore on the effectiveness of your account.

I DON’T CLICK ON ADWORDS ADS – SO MY CUSTOMERS WON’T EITHER. It’s true that some customers deliberately avoid clicking on ads. However, around 15 to 20 per cent of all searches result in a customer clicking an ad. And there’s no cost involved when a searcher does not click the ad.

I DON’T HAVE THE BUDGET FOR ADWORDS Many of your competitors will be assuming the same thing. In truth,

AdWords accounts regularly return ten times the amount spent on ads. There are very few marketing endeavours you can engage in where return on investment can be so clearly interpreted. Not convinced? Try AdWords for one month – we’ll even throw in up to £120 of free vouchers. Hydra Creative is a full service digital design agency with twelve expert staff specialising in all aspects of digital and offline marketing. This year has been Hydra Creative’s busiest yet with an increase in staff, clients, award nominations and wins. The agency has been nominated for seven Recommended Agency Awards and was winner of the Value for Money award at the Recommended Agency Digital Awards 2015. To finish off the summer Hydra Creative were delighted to be included in The Drum magazine’s Digital Census 2015, where it was ranked number one for client satisfaction for the agency size category. PROFESSOR LENNY KOH IS ONE OF THE NEW CHAIRS OF THE LOCAL ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIP’S REVIVED LOW CARBON SECTOR GROUP. SHE SPOKE TO JULIE FARMER ABOUT SOME OF THE WAYS SHE INTENDS TO WORK WITH BUSINESSES AND ABOUT HER RECENT AWARD FOR RESEARCH INTO E-WASTE.

CARBON CUTTER A

world-leading expert on low carbon supply chains, Professor Lenny Koh will join Oliver Coppard (Sheffield City Region LEP) and Teresa Hitchcock (DLA Piper) as co-chair of the LEP’s low carbon sector group for the next 12 months. The group will also be rebranded to become the Sustainability Partnership for Business, Innovation and Skills Group. Representing the education sector, Lenny, from the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Social Sciences’ Management School, will engage with the region’s businesses to understand what industry needs to move forward. Renowned internationally for her expertise in low carbon supply chains, resource efficiency and sustainability, Lenny is director of the Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre (AREC) from the University of Sheffield and recently published an award-winning paper on recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment. The paper found that recycling electronic waste was equal to 2.15 billion euros in overall potential revenue to the European market in 2014 which could rise to 3.67 billion euros by 2020. As well as providing a significant source of revenue, more effective recovery of materials could benefit the environment by reducing

manufacturers’ reliance on unprocessed resources. Lenny published the paper along with colleagues Federica Cucciella, Idiano D’Adomo and Paolo Rosa from the University of L’Aquila and Politecnico di Milano. The research has since been recognised by academic publisher Elsevier with the prestigious Atlas Award. The award recognises scientific research that has an impact on people around the world and is selected by an advisory board based on suggestions from the publishers of Elsevier’s 1,800 journals each month. Lenny said: “What we have found in the paper is useful across a range of industries and sectors and will potentially inform society, policy and regulatory making bodies such as the EU for the implementation of regulations and laws in terms of recycling so we can recover waste and turn that into useful resources. As we have discovered from this paper there are so many useful materials that are being thrown away in landfill yet recovery of these materials can give them a second life so we can all reduce our reliance on virgin materials. “We are hoping there will be a lot of

businesses in this region that benefit from the paper in terms of the recovery and recycling of materials, particularly those in the aviation, telecoms, automotive and energy sectors; however other types of businesses will also indirectly benefit. “By increasing awareness we aim for the Sheffield city region to become a hub for sustainability.” Lenny is hopeful that taking up the position of co-chair on the Sustainability Partnership for Business, Innovation and Skills Group will help raise the profile of the sustainability agenda. “The Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre is already active in the region but by further highlighting its work more businesses across all sectors will be able to benefit and have greater involvement in the AREC.” The first outing of the Sustainability Partnership for Business, Innovation and Skills Group was a visit to Microsoft in London on 24 September. Other planned activities include engagement events and workshops. To find out more about the group or about the work of the AREC contact Lenny by email at s.c.l.koh@sheffield.ac.uk.

CLAIRE BELL, CJ SIGNS Claire Bell knows that running a successful business extends outside of the office and beyond 9-5; and that’s why she has recently turned her attentions to networking and further raising the profile of the business. Co-director of vehicle wrapping company CJ signs with her husband Jason, for the last decade Claire has focused mainly on administrative activities such as accounts, payroll and marketing. But at the beginning of 2015 Claire organised an open day to coincide with the company’s move to larger premises – and she’s never looked back. “It’s gone absolutely bonkers!” said Claire. “We were busy before but we haven’t

To cope with the increasing demand, Claire recently arranged for a new tailormade software program, Clarity, to be installed, which has given her more time to focus on non-admin activities. “It’s brilliant,” she said. “The software

Since it started in 2004, the company has secured a number of regular clients including Autoworld in Chesterfield and the Newell & Wright Group, based at Templeborough. CJ Signs also works with motor racing company Ginetta Cars and has recently wrapped vehicles for Sir Christopher Hoy and Rick Parfitt Jnr.

LISA BROWN, NRC SERVICES

MANDY TYLER, THE SITWELL ARMS HOTEL

Lisa Brown started working at NRC Services as a cleaner and 11 years on she has climbed the ranks to become Contracts Manager. Her position now involves managing around 100 cleaning staff, based at approximately 70 sites. She has a great deal of face-to-face involvement with customers and is responsible for ensuring they all receive high standards of customer service.

Mandy Tyler is well recognised in the area as a leading sales, marketing and events manager. Having worked in the industry for over 30 years she has recently taken on a new appointment, heading up the Marketing Team at The Sitwell Arms Hotel. Her role involves the organising and marketing of all of the hotel’s events, weddings and conferences.

“I started at NRC in a part-time cleaning job while I was studying Leisure and Tourism as I actually wanted to be an air hostess,” said Lisa. “Thankfully I made the right decision and continued to work here full-time, progressing to Area Supervisor before securing this role. “Because I’ve been a cleaner myself I understand that each member of the team needs the same attention as any other employee, even the managers. To do their jobs properly they need to have that mop, that bucket, those cleaning products – and it’s down to me to make sure they have everything they need. If you look after your staff they look after you.” Lisa is just one of a team of dedicated women who ensure that business runs smoothly at NRC. Anne Taylor has recently been appointed as Cleaning

generates quotes, turns them into job sheets if the quotes are accepted and also makes invoicing much easier. It has drastically cut down the amount of paperwork I have to do and freed up time for out of office activities. I’ve joined Trades Hub and am booked onto a number of upcoming events. I prefer being with people than being stuck in an office so I’m really looking forward to getting out there and building relationships with other business people.”

Contracts Manager to help with the day to day running of the cleaning department alongside Lisa. Dawn Eccles started five years ago as an administrator for the building and electrical department and was appointed to Office Manager in 2013. Dawn now oversees the administration team who are Helen Elsey, Katy Lee, Leanne Dale, Hollee Gibson and Susan Sheerin; together they are responsible for all of the company’s paperwork, from quotes to invoicing, from paying suppliers to chasing aged debt and everything in between. “The women here are definitely an important part of the business,” said Dawn. “We are in the background helping the guys with the day to day paperwork to ease their workloads. The guys may call it nagging but we call it helping!”

“Having delivered outside events to the Sitwell in a previous role, I knew exactly how the hotel and staff work, and our relationship was already under construction, so I was thrilled to join the team,” said Mandy. “I am very passionate about delivering excellence, and very excited to be able to demonstrate this in my new role. It’s no doubt challenging, but I intend to help the hotel’s reputation grow from strength to strength. “Every day is different here and, as the Sitwell is a family run hotel, we are a very hands on team which means we are able to offer what we believe is the very best in excellent facilities, food quality, service and value for money.”

RITA HOWSON, SUPPORT DOGS When Support Dogs was first set up 23 years ago Rita Howson was quick to offer her services as a volunteer dog trainer. Several years later she was given a salaried position, went on to became dog training manager, then director of operations and finally, 18 months ago, was appointed chief executive. Rita has seen the charity go through some challenging times, including the departure of the founder and several employees in 2004 which left just Rita, two other dog trainers and a couple of dedicated board members to build Support Dogs back up. The charity also suffered a massive setback in 2007 when the Sheffield floods destroyed the building it occupied. Rita – together with the support of her team – has managed to get the charity well and truly back on its feet, to the point where it has a huge waiting list for support dogs to assist people with physical disabilities, autism and epilepsy. Her ambition is to eventually move the charity into more suitable premises to enable Support Dogs to assist more individuals and better cater

for the needs of those it supports. “We’ve come through some difficult times but even during these challenging periods we have made sure we have maintained support for all our clients and accepted new applications,” said Rita. “Our aim over the next few years is to move into purposebuild premises such as a small-holding on the outskirts of Sheffield. “We serve the whole of the UK and currently when clients come from across the country we put them up in hotels and we also need to rent out spaces to deliver group training. It would be incredible if we could put clients up overnight and have the capacity to deliver training on site, as well as being able to give our dogs plenty of space to run around and provide overnight kennels as well. “The demand for our services is overwhelming; every eight hours we receive a call from a family in need of our services. Currently we can only help about one in every 50 who contact us. We are currently on the lookout for people from the business world, particularly from a HR or Finance background to get involved with the charity and consider becoming a trustee. For more details please visit our website www.supportdogs.org.uk.”

VICKY BROWN, LADIES’ CYCLE SPEEDWAY WORLD CHAMPION Vicky Brown knows the true meaning of ‘making an impact’ after being crowned ladies’ cycle speedway world champion. As if that wasn’t enough just a few weeks later she scooped the British women’s outdoor gold medal and became the only woman ever to have won both prestigious titles in the same year. At the second event – the British Outdoor Championship – she won all five of her races with a 20-point maximum, despite heavy rain churning the Ipswich track to a mire and feeling the weight of expectation heavy on her shoulders. The 22-year-old Sheffield Hallam sports coaching student – who also works at Wosskow Brown solicitors – applied an approach she had learnt in class to overcome the obstacles. “I walked in as world champion and that piled on the pressure,” said Vicky. “I didn’t get the luck of the draw in track position for four of my five finals races and felt so negative I convinced myself I’d got no chance. However, I turned the negatives into a positive by telling myself that if I had no chance, there was no pressure on me. My university teacher Dave Hembrough, a strength and conditioning coach who is into sports psychology, had told me about Positive Mental Attitude and I’ve used it to redirect the way I think. It’s amazingly effective.”

AMY REVELL, M3 Amy Revell has been in the construction industry for just over five years and has worked her way up from sales support to m3’s business development manager. Starting her career with a small specialist contractor, Amy was exposed to all levels of the business operation and developed her understanding of the core business principals you need to succeed. Throughout her career Amy has seen more women come into the industry and wanted to play a part in educating and encouraging the younger generation, whilst creating an opportunity to network with new and experienced women across all sectors of the construction industry. Amy is now deputy chair of the East Midlands division of the National Association of Women in Construction. Working with schools and colleges to inspire and inform young girls and boys, as well as creating a support network for other women in the industry, the association encourages individuals to pursue, establish and sustain successful careers in the construction industry. Amy’s ultimate aim is to promote the positives in the construction industry as a whole and to highlight the fantastic work carried out by the professionals working within it. m3 has fully supported Amy’s involvement with the committee, enforcing how the industry views this as a positive and valuable contribution to businesses.

LEADING LADIES MEN STILL RULE THE ROOST IN THE FINANCE SECTOR BUT WOMEN ARE BREAKING THE MOULD AT KNOWLES WARWICK. HERE TWO OF THE FIRM’S TOP EXECUTIVES EXPLAIN HOW.

A

s a small business with many female staff who understand the challenges women in business face, Knowles Warwick is proud to be the exception to the rule that the finance industry is heavily male-dominated. Two key female figures in the business are Director of Operations Angela Taylor and Director of Taxation Gillian Dudson.

GILLIAN DUDSON “Even today, very few women work in tax, so I represent the minority in my field. It can be difficult getting a foot in the door in certain industries, but with events like The Yorkshire Business Festival celebrating Women in Business on October 1, and several women only networking groups popping up across the city, there's no better time to be a woman in business! “Flexibility is key to attracting more women into the workplace, as juggling a busy home life and a career can be challenging at times. At Knowles Warwick, we offer flexible hours, part time roles and even the ability to work

from home when necessary, using our remote desktop. “I think it’s a fantastic time for women, as opportunities that weren’t open to us previously are now becoming available. Several companies now offer a ‘returnship’ programme, similar to an internship but for people who are returning to the workplace after a long career break, such as women who took time off to raise a family or even care for a loved one. “My hope for the future is that women will one day equal men for numbers in industries that are currently male-dominated, such as STEM, finance and politics.”

“Flexibility is key to attracting more women into the workplace, as juggling a busy home life and a career can be challenging at times.’ ANGELA TAYLOR “Last year I was delighted to be shortlisted for PA of the Year at the Forward Ladies Women in Business Awards. I was joined by a few of our female clients at the ceremony in Leeds, including Anne Wilson from Numill Engineering, who was also nominated for two awards and won Yorkshire and Humber Business Woman of the Year! This year, Anne was nominated for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Business of the Year award, and another of our clients, Lisa Bolger, who owns a children’s

nursery and a care home, was shortlisted for SME Business of the Year (Growth -10 or more employees). We’re proud to have so many successful female business owners as clients, as accountants and business advisors there’s no better testimonial than a successful client! “I think that the government’s recent decision to make big businesses reveal the average salaries of male and female employees will have a profound effect on the gender pay gap. Hopefully future generations will see this gap close completely.”

ANOTHER E-VAN MAKES TRACKS DURHAM DUPLEX IS THE LATEST COMPANY TO GO-GREEN BY SWITCHING TO AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE.

T

he South Yorkshire Inmotion! Electric Vehicle scheme is picking up momentum, with yet another Nissan e-NV200 on our roads adding to the local cleaner, greener air cause. The Inmotion! programme is helping businesses across the county to introduce electric vehicles into their fleet, with the multi award-winning Nissan electric van proving to be very popular. Collectively, vehicles leased through the Inmotion! programme have covered 31,500 miles and companies have saved a combined total of £3,492* contributing positively to local air quality by reducing their CO2 footprint by 6.3 tonnes. Durham Duplex, an international company which manufactures and distributes a range of over 14,000 different machine knives and industrial blades, recently introduced a plug-in electric van to its fleet. Clive Wrenn, Durham Duplex, dispatch manager, said: “Making the switch to an electric vehicle seemed an easy thing to do, which helps the environment and reduces our emissions. The van is really good and its range is more than adequate for our local requirements, although it does take a bit of getting used to as there is no engine noise when you are driving.” Businesses discovering the benefits of cleaner, lower-cost electric vehicles include South Yorkshire Housing

Association, Sheffield United Community Foundation, Stagecoach Supertram, SVM Europe, Action Recruitment Europe Ltd, Energytest Ltd and PJ Taste. Peter Moulam, PJ Taste owner, said: “The benefits have been the recognition from our customers that we are using a sustainable delivery method, along with extremely low running costs and zero charges for parking in Sheffield. The zero car tax is a bonus and as we purchased through the Inmotion! Electric Vehicles leasing scheme it provides the peace of mind that the servicing costs are covered too.” South Yorkshire’s Electric Vehicle Project runs until 31 March 2016 and offers businesses a grant of up to £10,500 for the flexible lease of a plug-in van or £7,500 for a plug-in car for up to 48 months. An additional grant of £500 towards the cost of installing a workplace charging point is also available. Current plug-in vehicles offered through

the scheme include the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, Volkswagen e-Up, Volkswagen e-Golf, Renault Kangoo and Nissan e-NV200, with flexible lease terms from 12 to 48 months. The Inmotion! programme is also providing a number of free to use fast and rapid charging points across the region, and the number is growing. The charging points allow vehicles to be fully charged in just 20 minutes by a rapid and three to four hours via a fast charging point. Inmotion! locations include: Meadowhall; Carver Lane in Sheffield; Drummond Street in Rotherham; the Advanced Manufacturing Park; the Lakeside Shopping Centre in Doncaster and the Barnsley Market multi-storey car park. *£4,095 assuming 13p per mile in an ICE car and £603 assuming 2p per mile for electric. IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS The Subaru Levorg Sport Tourer is a replacement for the highly regarded Subaru Legacy Tourer. As standard, each model will gain the companies iconic all-wheel drive system made famous by those insane rally cars of the past. Subaru says the Levorg Sport Tourer has the best interior they have ever fitted to a car. Standard equipment which includes leather trimmed sport seats and a new seven-inch touchscreen with navigation and communication systems. From its September launch, only a 168hp 1.6-litre DIT power unit will be available which produces 40mpg and achieves a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds. JAGUAR UNLEASHES THE NEW XF The all-new Jaguar XF is certainly a very distinctive car. It’s certainly the best looking in the premium executive saloon market. Jaguar has brought elegant and crisp modernism to the proceedings with a gloss black swooping centre console and a huge colour touchscreen to minimise the number of dashboard buttons. It comes with a great array of engines which range from 71mpg diesels to 375hp supercharged V6 powerhouses. Interior space has improved over the old car and the new suspension set-up and 80kg weight saving has made the XF as fun to drive as the BMW 5-Series. Available to order now. Priced from £32,300.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS, SAYS EUROPA DIRECTOR JOHN WORDSWORTH

At Europa you can experience these levels of customer service and know it doesn’t come at a cost. Log into ‘MyService,’ the new Mercedes-Benz quotation platform, enter your details and compare Europa’s service costs with the four other most local Mercedes-Benz dealers.

E

uropa continues to reach the highest levels of customer satisfaction in its Mercedes-Benz Authorised Workshop and director John Wordsworth believes that experience counts when meeting customer expectations. Europa’s Mercedes-Benz service team has a long history with Mercedes-Benz in both the service reception and workshop. These include, pictured top left to right: Richard Easthope, systems technician, 31 years; Paul Street , diagnostic technician, 20 years; Graham Goodwin, diagnostic technician, 27 years; and Tony Darwent, workshop foreman, 11 years. Bottom, left to right: David Fletcher, service reception, 18 years; Steve Waters, service manager, 24 years; and Bob Austin, parts manager, 28 years. Add to this the three directors , Tony, Mark and John, who have more than 50 years’ experience between them with the Mercedes-Benz brand.

“Many workshops advertise themselves as having ‘factory-trained technicians’, but this knowledge will be out of date,” said John. “Part of the ‘Mercedes-Benz standards’ involves Europa’s technicians undertaking Mercedes-Benz training, and being assessed and tested every year. We believe it is this level of understanding of Mercedes-Benz drivers and their cars that sets us apart.” Here are comments made this month from some of Europa’s Mercedes-Benz customers:

RACE DAY SUCCESS Sponsored by Origin Broadband and First For Business, the Master and Mistress Cutler were among the 180 guests from Sheffield’s corporate sector who enjoyed a great day of racing at the St Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse. The lunchtime charity raffle raised an incredible £1,200 for Chamber of Commerce Charity of the Year Support Dogs.

STARBUCKS STAFF FULL OF BEANS Staff at eight Starbucks branches across the city have reached their £25,000 fundraising target for The Children’s Hospital Charity. The five branches across Sheffield and three in Meadowhall were united two years ago by a goal of reaching the target to sponsor a private room in a new wing being built at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The branches have held countless fundraising events over the last two years, from running marathons, fancy dress days and cake bakes to selling charity merchandise to boost their total.

HELP WITH CHINESE MISSION Chinese speaking graduates from the University of Sheffield are to team up with businesses in the city to help them prepare for a special trade visit to China. Under the University’s Great Ambassadors (China) Scheme’s new Platinum Club project, 10 SMEs in the city, which already have plans to trade in China, will be offered support to recruit a graduate who will be able to help them get ready for a trade visit to Beijing in March next year. The initiative is part of the Sheffield in China project, a collaboration between the University of Sheffield, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Hallam University to promote the Sheffield brand to enhance trade links with China.
