PREVIEW

NOVEMBER 2015

PREVIEW heffield City Region’s reputation as an area at the forefront of modern business is expanding all the time, and this is particularly true when it comes to staging conferences capable of reaching an international audience.

S

Major events on the horizon include SheffEX at Ponds Forge International, where local business and industry gets together to make new contacts, opportunities and deals. SheffEX is the place where bright new ideas can spark to life, with a lively choice of activities and vital issues on the agenda including devolution, city centre redevelopment and advanced manufacturing. Richard Caborn, the former government minister and newly appointed Business and Industry Envoy for Sheffield, will deliver the keynote speech at an event that gives local companies a platform to shout about how great they are at what they do and what a fabulous city Sheffield is. Meanwhile delegates from around the world will be gathering at The Magna Science Adventure Centre for the global metalworking industry’s premier aerospace conference, TRAM 2015, an event that has been drawn together by the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Boeing, the Association for Manufacturing Technology and the Royal Aeronautical

Society. Both Sheffield and Rotherham councils will attend the event, hoping to market the region’s capabilities and capacities. It all adds up to a picture of Sheffield City Region as forward-thinking and outward-looking – a far cry from the insular, parochial view that may once have been regarded as typical of this part of the world. This month in First For Business, consultant editor Andy Waple and chief feature writer Julie Farmer take a close look at the various ways we are broadening our business horizons. We look at new links between Sheffield and South Korea, and how they might open up potential new business opportunities thanks to a partnership that has the potential to benefit both the South Koreans and our regional economy. Cracking the world market is, of course, a brilliant way to expand your business – but for anyone dipping a toe into the overseas export market, the first step can be extremely daunting. Help is at hand, however, and this month our Dream Team of business experts are ready with some up-to-the-minute advice. Spreading the good word about Sheffield City Region as a great place to do business is just one of the challenges Craig McKean has set himself as he begins his year in office as Master Cutler. The CEO of Sheffield engineering firm

CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR

Evenort tells us his ten-point plan for the next 12 months. With business and job growth higher than both the regional and national average, it seems there is no better time to do business in Barnsley. In fact, having worked its way out of Sheffield’s shadow, the South Yorkshire town is now recognised as a hub for business in its own right. We take a look at the reasons behind Barnsley’s business rebirth. Meanwhile, on a lighter note, if whoever is in charge of your office party has not made a firm booking, we include a gentle but firm reminder that time is running out if you want to celebrate Christmas in style. Finally, if you’re in the fortunate position of being able to take a break from business for a week or so, we look at the glories of golf in the year-round resort of Tenerife. I do hope you enjoy this edition of First For Business. Let us know what you think by tweeting us at @ffbmagRMC.

GLOBAL REPUTATION SHEFFIELD CITY REGION’S CONFERENCE CAPABILITIES ARE NOW REACHING AN INTERNATION AUDIENCE – AND THERE’S MUCH MORE TO COME, WRITES ANDY WAPLE. he return of a major international conference to the Sheffield region next month is a coup whose significance should not be underestimated.

T

When delegates from around the world gather at The Magna Science Adventure Centre for the global metalworking industry’s premier aerospace conference, TRAM 2015, they will be reminded by their surroundings of the major contribution the region has made over the centuries to the world’s manufacturing achievements. Rail network components, armaments,

6

bulk and stainless steel to name a few all had their roots here. More significantly, this event will highlight the region’s current credentials and prove it has not been left behind by technological advance and that it remains at the forefront of innovation in advanced manufacturing. The event, staged on 10 and 11 November is itself of global importance, bringing together senior players in manufacturing, researchers and theorists from academia and the specialist media, to examine the latest trends in the aerospace industry. Speakers from major

companies such as Rolls-Royce, Boeing, Siemens and BAE Systems will be among the delegates. TRAM 2015 has been drawn together by the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Boeing, the Association for Manufacturing Technology, Gardner Business Media and the Royal Aeronautical Society. The keynote speech will be delivered by Dr Kevin Slattery, Boeing Research and Technology’s chief scientist for metals, ceramics, and mechanical parts. Other speakers include Dr Gregory

Hyatt, from machine tool manufacturer DMG MORI, Dr Timothy Armstrong, from leading specialist alloys and performance engineered products group Carpenter Technology Corporation and Peter Hammond, technical director of Metrology Software Products. The conference will also examine the challenges posed to traditional cutting fluids by new environmental regulations, and Axel Flaig, senior vice-president for research and technology at Airbus, will look at the key technology streams currently being developed by his research teams. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre launched the TRAM event in 2009 but since then it has been staged alongside the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago. Its return to the Sheffield region has delighted AMRC, and is seen as an opportunity by local politicians and business leaders to impress a captive audience. AMRC commercial director, Adrian Allen,

said: “We are delighted to be able to bring this prestigious event back to the Sheffield region. “TRAM will not only give companies in the aerospace supply chain a vital insight into developing technologies, it also gives this region a chance to showcase the skills and capabilities that make it a world leader for advanced manufacturing.” Magna chief executive, John Silker, agreed. He said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to prove that Magna can attract international business to South Yorkshire, and it shows that we have a venue here that can cater for business events of this scale. “It shows that this area is at the forefront of modern manufacturing and what better place to hold such an event but at Magna which is a cathedral to industry.” Both Sheffield and Rotherham councils will attend the event, hoping to market the region’s capabilities and capacities. The council’s’ economic development agencies – Creative Sheffield and RiDO

– will be promoting the upcoming Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District based around the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Waverley and surrounding Enterprise Zone, which is envisaged to become Europe’s largest research-led advanced manufacturing cluster. Coun Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for business, skills and development at Sheffield council, said: “I look forward to discussing our plans for an Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District with delegates at TRAM. “Our unrivalled connection of industry and research-led innovation at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has already been a force for the agglomeration of advanced manufacturing and technology firms. “This critical mass of expertise and experience presents the UK with a unique opportunity to create an Innovation District of global significance, where we can design and make the next generation of whole industries.” While staging major events is clearly >>>

“TRAM WILL NOT ONLY GIVE COMPANIES IN THE AEROSPACE SUPPLY CHAIN A VITAL INSIGHT INTO DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGIES, IT ALSO GIVES THIS REGION A CHANCE TO SHOWCASE THE SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES THAT MAKE IT A WORLD LEADER FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING.”

seen as an opportunity to showcase the city as a place to do business, they would not happen if the right infrastructure were not in place to impress delegates. The region has been working hard to make itself attractive to conference trade and ensure it has the capacity to stage major events. As a result the city can point to recent independent surveys that suggest it’s a good place for visitors. An international survey conducted by online reservation company Hotel Info. found that Sheffield had the best hotel customer service in the UK. It is the second time the city has topped the list, regaining top position after first claiming it in 2013. The research analysed the post-stay reviews of over six million hotel guests to reveal the best and worst service levels across Europe based on friendliness and staff competence. Sheffield tops the UK list in 2015, with an average rating of 8.03 out of 10, followed by Liverpool (7.95) and Leeds (7.82). Larger UK cities did not fare as well, with Birmingham receiving 7.22, and London coming last in the list of large cities, with 7.12. Ian Slater, Chair of Hospitality Sheffield, said: “Over recent years there has been a huge investment in training and skills development in Sheffield, with Hospitality Sheffield working closely with its members and training partners to help create the very best teams. As such, we’re delighted to find ourselves top of

8

this list for the second time – a lot of hard work and effort has gone in, and it’s a title we’re extremely proud of and determined to keep.” Another report has revealed that conference business in Sheffield has risen to its highest levels since 2008. The national UKCAMS survey showed that delegates accounted for an estimated direct spend of £132.6million in 2014, up from £117.3million in 2013. The report highlighted Sheffield’s success in attracting association conferences accounting for 29 per cent of business in Sheffield, up on 2013 and significantly higher than the national average of 18 per cent in the rest of the UK. The news was welcomed by Marketing Sheffield, the body charged with increasing business visits and conferences. Brendan Moffett, Director of Marketing Sheffield, said: “This is a strong indication of the success of Marketing Sheffield initiatives such as our Conference Ambassador Programme which specifically seeks to increase association conference business working with local ambassadors. “It clearly demonstrates the importance of conference business to the city’s

economy. Large scale conferences and business events also provide great profile for the city, allowing us to showcase both Sheffield’s fields of expertise and city vibrancy, to national and international audiences.” Sheffield has attracted a number of major events recently including MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival, the International Adventure Tourism Conference, The British Society of Neuroradiologists, the European Outdoor Summit and the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. The city is also staging the year’s second SheffEX event in December – designed for local businesses to showcase themselves, network with others and improve their skills through workshops and seminars. Headline speaker will be Richard Caborn, who is involved in the Olympic Legacy Park, City Centre 2050 and Factory 2050. Next year will see the return of the biennial Institute of Work Psychology International Conference, organised by Institute Sheffield University Management School, the Global Manufacturing Festival, MADE and a host of smaller events across many business disciplines.

The new Korean AMRC (KAMRC) will strengthen links between the Sheffield City Region and Korea and open up potential new business opportunities. The KAMRC is being developed following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the University, the Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence Technology (KCTECH), Jeonju University and Jeonju City. The agreement builds on an earlier MoU, signed in 2012 by the University, KCTECH and Jeonju City, which heralded the start of international collaboration between the organisations. Since then several successful projects have been undertaken and KCTECH was officially recognised as an Associated Laboratory by the AMRC early this year. One project led to researchers from the AMRC, KCTECH and the SsangYong Motor Company winning the JEC Asia Award for innovation in automotive applications for their work on developing a complex composite acoustic cover for a car engine bay that could be cured in an industrial microwave. The new MoU will lead to further collaboration on research, support

10

Korean suppliers to AMRC partners and promote educational cooperation on the joint development of manufacturing courses and student exchanges. The MoU was signed during a visit to South Korea by AMRC executive dean, Prof Keith Ridgway, CBE; the head of the AMRC Composites Group, Richard Scaife, and Jounghwan Lee, who was involved in the research which led to the JEC Asia Award. The KAMRC will be a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Sheffield. AMRC Composite Centre Researcher, Jounghwan Lee, said: “The establishment of the new Korean AMRC, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between ourselves and the Korea institute of Carbon Convergence Technology (KCTECH), Jeonju University and Jeonju City, is designed to help us and the South Koreans enhance the international collaboration between our business and the high-value manufacturing sectors and encourage international R&D and educational programmes. “It is hoped that this partnership will bring mutual benefit to both the South Koreans and our regional economy, allowing us to promote our capabilities to the Korean market and provide the opportunity for further investment in our local region.”

ENCOURAGING VISIT May 2015 marked the first time a business delegation led by a representative of the South Korean government had visited a British region outside of London. The 30-strong group visited Rotherham and Sheffield and was led by Mr Han Junghwa, who heads the Republic of Korea’s (RoK) Small and Medium Business Administration, a government department with a £4.7bn budget. Speaking at the time, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce’s Chief Executive, who met with the delegation at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, said: “This is exactly the type of visit from overseas businesses that we should be hosting and encouraging more of in the future. The reputation of the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley in Rotherham is spreading worldwide and we should not shrink back from using that as an attraction to bring foreign investment into the region.”

BUILDING FIRM FOUNDATIONS THE FIRST 12 MONTHS OF THE WOSSKOW BROWN FOUNDATION HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING AND SUCCESSFUL ONE. PROGRAMME DIRECTOR JIM LAWSON LOOKS AT ITS HIGHLIGHTS AND WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS.

N

ovember marks the one-year anniversary of the Wosskow Brown Foundation, set up to transform the future of hundreds of businesses, charities and grassroots sports clubs in the Sheffield City Region. Here, programme director Jim Lawson gives an overview of the Foundation’s first 12 months, introduces one of the programme’s successful beneficiaries and explains how businesses and individuals can get involved in 2016. When we launched the Wosskow Brown Foundation towards the end of 2014, we could never have imagined the position we find ourselves in today. The background to the Foundation is that we were fully aware of how difficult it could be for businesses, charities, social enterprises, sports clubs and individual people to find the support they needed to grow and prosper. Wosskow Brown wanted to find a longterm way of providing support and, after a great deal of discussion and planning, established the Foundation to do just that. Our vision was, and still is, ‘To provide practical help, inspiration and opportunities for people to reach their ambitions’. We launched with our inaugural programme, the WB100. The goal was to support 100 businesses, 100 charities/social enterprises and 100 sports clubs over the next five years. We also aimed to help create 100 new jobs. One year on we have already supported in the region of 50 beneficiaries; a mix of businesses, charities, social enterprises and sports clubs.

12

We have held group sessions and mentoring, put on workshops and speakers and provided support in numerous areas of business, such as writing business plans and obtaining finance. In this first year the Foundation has been extremely well received. Former sports minister Richard Caborn, who is the driving force behind the Olympic Legacy Park and the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, remains president of the Foundation. As we look ahead to the next 12 months we have some exciting opportunities for both potential beneficiaries and supporters of the Foundation. We are currently looking for our second cohort of beneficiaries to whom we can lend our support. We invite applications from businesses, charities, social enterprises and sports clubs, which could benefit from support with the growth or sustainability of their organisation. Our intention is to take on approximately 40 new beneficiaries by the end of 2015/early 2016 and we will be reviewing applications during November. We are also seeking angel investors in the Sheffield City Region who would be willing to engage with some of our beneficiaries or consider investing in them. Anyone interested in applying to join the WB100 programme for 2016 or who would like to offer support/ investment should contact Jim Lawson at jim@wosskowbrownfoundation.org.uk.

NEW OFFICE LAUNCH MARKS FOUNDATION ANNIVERSARY To commemorate a successful first year, the Wosskow Brown Foundation is opening a dedicated hub which will act as a drop-in centre for anyone interested in finding out more about the Foundation or requiring face-toface support. The new hub, based within the same building as the main Wosskow Brown office at Attercliffe, has been purposely designed to feel informal, friendly and welcoming. It will be manned five-days-a-week by Jim Lawson and Wosskow Brown marketing executive Mike Tuck, supported by Molly Powell from the reception team and colleagues from the commercial team It will be officially opened by Foundation president Richard Caborn on 19 November.

BRINGING A TASTE OF COLOMBIA TO SHEFFIELD ura Panela distributes panela, a 100 per cent natural alternative to sugar, within the UK.

P

Claimed to have more vitamins and minerals than white sugar, panela is Colombia’s second biggest industry after coffee. Natalia Welch, 29, grew up in Colombia using the product, which is produced by an ancient process which extracts juice from sugar cane then boils it over five hours to create a concentrated paste, preserving its vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content. Natalia came to the UK in April 2010 to study English and criminology at the University of Sheffield, but it wasn’t until a chance visit to the Eden Project in Cornwall in 2012, where there was a mini Colombian rainforest complete with panela, that she struck upon the idea of starting a business. “Lots of people wanted to buy the panela, but there was no stock,” she said. “I spotted an opportunity to import it.” Natalia started selling the product – under her Pura Panela brand – at farmers’ markets and through local shops and restaurants. She received help from Sheffield University and council-run support service Business Sheffield and soon found herself and her business gaining recognition. Natalia won the award for ‘Best Business Idea’ at the University of Sheffield’s

annual enterprise awards, was nominated for the BQ Emerging Entrepreneur Award and Pura Panela was featured in The Guardian as a Startup of the Year in 2014. In 2015 Natalia heard about the Wosskow Brown Foundation and approached Wosskow Brown partner Ian Brown with a sample of the product. “Initially I was looking for connections with sports people as panela is used as a natural energiser in Colombia,” she said. “However, the Foundation has proved to be so much more than a network for my business; it really engages with my ideas and genuinely wants to help me achieve my goals. The mentors have always offered very professional, well-targeted suggestions and advice which I have found invaluable.” Natalia has accessed a variety of support through the Foundation including business sessions, legal advice and oneto-one meetings to work on particular issues she has faced. “Thanks to the Foundation I have met potential clients and accessed the legal support to grow my business and deal

with any new challenges that arise,” she said. “The Foundation’s support has definitely given me more confidence in my plans for the future.” Business is now set to skyrocket following a recent development; Natalia has been made the UK head of her government’s international Cierre de Brechas campaign, which is supported by the Colombian Ministry for Agriculture and farmers’ co-operative FedePanela. The role places Natalia in charge of showing the UK the benefits of using panela. As well as representing her own import business, she is now the UK representative for the whole FedePanela industry association. Wosskow Brown Foundation’s Jim Lawson said: “Natalia is a real success story. When she approached the Foundation she already had a great business, but with our support and guidance she’s really stepped up her game. Her business has had such an impact that she’s secured a prestigious role as the UK ambassador for the industry – what an incredible achievement!”

NEW HORIZONS TAKING THE LEAP INTO EXPORTING TO NEW MARKETS ABROAD IS A BIG STEP – BUT THERE IS A WEALTH OF HELP AVAILABLE, AS OUR DREAM TEAM EXPLAINS. ROB MOORE, RECOVERY EXPERT AND PARTNER AT TAYLOR & EMMETT Starting an international business can be easy or difficult, depending on what type of business you intend to engage in and which countries you intend to do business with. You will need to establish a home office, and in most cases you will need to establish an overseas corporate subsidiary or opening an offshore representative office. The basic framework for establishing an international company is more or less the same for any business but things you should take into account include: Political climate and property rights Some countries have a record of confiscating property and/or businesses owned by foreigners. You'll probably want to steer clear of those. Others have solid property rights and full access for foreigners. You can find the trade association in your sector via www.taforum.org. Many countries will try to limit the quantity of certain goods being exported from their country. Therefore, make sure you obtain an import licence and take quotas into account. Although the EU

allows unrestricted movement of the majority of goods between its members, you may still need an import licence. Also, make sure you are familiar with tax requirements. Overseas government websites provide information on local legal requirements, tax and duties and you can hire international accounting and legal specialists to help you reconcile the tax and accounting obligations of your overseas entities with those of the parent company. The increasing globalisation of markets and the opportunities provided by the internet have supported many decisions to export. However, firstly investigate factors specific to your own company and its current circumstances and also consider more general factors

relating to your industry’s position in the international marketplace. You also need to be aware the INCOTERMS (International Commercial Terms) which are an internationally recognised set of trade term definitions developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The terms define the trade contract responsibilities and liabilities between a buyer and a seller. Economic situation Countries with low debt-to-GDP ratios, low or declining unemployment, and strong consumer spending normally make for good prospects. A growing middle class, low inflation, and rising incomes are also positive signs. Market research Market research can help you get a handle on where your goods or services will sell, the different market segments, whether you'll have competitors, and how to price your product for the market. Fortunately, there are many consultants, government agencies, books and free resources on the Internet that can help. Try setting up a trial run or conducting surveys before investing very much capital. Don't overlook how much you'll have to pay employees, nor what work habits are like in the country. Also when taking a product to a global market you will need to consider changes

to the packaging and branding requirements along with any trademark or domain issues. Language barriers If your business will cater to other foreigners, this might not be much of an issue. However, being able to easily converse with the local population will make launching your venture much more straightforward. Hiring a translator can be costly so consider taking on a bilingual employee. The incorporation process The International Finance Corporation and the World Bank have a great webpage that compares the costs, amount of time, and number of procedures involved with forming a business in 183 countries around the world. The page is specifically for businesses with between 10 and 50 employees, but can be helpful for those looking into both smaller and larger operations. Finally some really useful sources of information include: Trade & Investment (UKTI), the British Chambers of Commerce, and the British International Freight Association Good luck!

RENATE HALTON, INTERNATIONAL TRADE CONSULTANT Fantastic that you are thinking about exporting. The Sheffield City Region has ambitious plans to increase exports, assist first-time exporters and get those who are already exporting to do more! We are in growth mode! The first thing to draw your attention to is a current awareness campaign to help companies such as yours to get on the road to success. So, who can help? There is an abundance of help available, too many to mention indepth in this short introduction so I will highlight just a few in no particular order UKTI UK Trade & Investment is the Government Department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global market

ADELE DETHICK, HEAD OF CORPORATE COMMERCIAL AT WOSSKOW BROWN Doing business internationally is not difficult but it requires a certain degree of preparation. The first thing to consider is whether your product is really going to be successful in your target location. It’s easy for anyone to pronounce their product as ‘sought after’ but to ensure success within your target market, it is always wise to spend some time considering the competition, the target customer profile and spending habits, and to ensure legal compliance in that particular country. Organisations such as the South Yorkshire International Trade Centre can run specific product market surveys in many countries. Once you’ve identified your target customer and country, ensure that you have the proper support to help you export. There are customs and insurance forms which need to be prepared, and then there is the thorny issue of getting paid when the product may take weeks to arrive at its destination – after all, you can’t just recall your products from a container ship, and yet your customer may not want to pay you for something which they have not yet received. With the correct support from an export adviser and your bank, you should be able to effectively manage these issues. Whilst export is essential for international trade, it also puts a strain on a company’s turnover. You should ensure that you have contractual documents in place to govern your relationships with trading and delivery partners. Wosskow Brown can help you ensure that your business is ready for export and you can contact our Head of Corporate Commercial, Adele Dethick (adele.dethick@wosskowbrown.co.uk). We would also recommend a few of our trusted advisers such as Kiley Tan (kiley.tan@mosaicint.co.uk) of Mosaic International – formerly a partner at Wosskow Brown but now specialising in international trade and investments in the Far East – and Nick Patrick (npatrick@syitc.com) at South Yorkshire International Trade Centre, who deals with all aspects of international trade, including a comprehensive export documentation service and export administration, known as the HUB for exporters.

BRANCHING OUT

B&B VEHICLE CONTRACTS LTD IS BUILDING ON ITS SUCCESSFUL CORE SERVICE OF CONTRACT HIRE AND HAS MOVED INTO NEW PREMISES TO ACCOMMODATE THE COMPANY’S EXPANSION.

stablished in 1997, B&B Vehicle Contracts has long been a local source of support for customers, not only providing the highest quality contract vehicles but also outstanding value, a no hassle service and impartial guidance.

E

With a customer base predominantly across the Sheffield City Region – but also spanning the UK from Scotland to Cornwall – B&B is proud to call itself a ‘local company’. It has a proven reputation as a company you can trust, meaning customers are assured of personal attention while also benefiting from a flexible and proactive approach, expert guidance and a range of support services. Having built up a loyal customer base, which includes major national companies and clients ranging in size from sole traders to fleets of 200, B&B Vehicles is now applying its expertise and ability to source the most cost-effective solutions into new areas. One of the most recent projects, about to start imminently, is providing minibuses for council-run schools, private schools and academies. To accommodate the expansion the

company has recently purchased and moved into new premises on Fairfield Road in Chesterfield. From its new base the family company will continue to offer the widest choice of vehicles, finance options and support services available and provide a quality service which conforms to rigorous standards. One of the company’s directors, John Barker, said: “B&B has always functioned like a partner to clients and has always been dedicated to providing the highest quality service at every opportunity. “We understand that clients want the process of organising contract hire to be as hassle-free and cost effective as possible so we take care of everything and take into account the entire spectrum of a client’s requirements. Whether you require a car or light commercial vehicle, new or used, we recognise that no two businesses are the same and each will have different vehicle funding and management needs so we offer a variety of solutions in order to give you complete flexibility and cost efficiency. “We also provide a comprehensive maintenance package which guarantees

maintenance costs on the vehicle, to help you budget accordingly and avoid unexpected costs.” The company is a keen supporter of community projects and is currently providing Sheffield United Football Club with two Nissan Leaf electric cars to help the club towards its ‘Going Green’ scheme; an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint within the city whilst also reducing its travel costs. For the last three years B&B has also been a proud sponsor of Sheffield Theatres and shows its support by providing vehicles which are used for everything from transporting props to visiting schools.

BUSINESS RECOVERY

NOVEMBER 2015

www.ffb-online.co.uk

CONTINUING SUPPORT SHOULD THE BUSINESS RECOVERY INDUSTRY BE GIVEN A NEW NAME? uring recent tough economic times more and more businesses than ever were struggling to survive and inevitably insolvency figures were high. The economy is now back on the up and business owners are feeling more positive about the future. So is it time for the business recovery industry to reflect this positive outlook?

D

Hear the words ‘business recovery’ and many people think immediately of terms such as ‘company insolvency’, ‘failure’ and ‘gone under’. But, in fact, business recovery professionals do much more than work with companies that have no future.Yes, they are involved in ‘recovering’ businesses from disasters but they also work with

companies to recover debt, to help obtain justice for fraudsters and to assist with refinancing, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions – in other words, to help companies look to a brighter future.

England and Wales were at the lowest level since Q4 2007. This decrease was mainly driven by a decrease in compulsory liquidations, which fell to the lowest level since Q4 2013.

One of the common misconceptions is that business recovery experts are only required when times are bad; but when economic times are good and organisations are looking to expand, business recovery professionals can offer advice on everything from executing deals to raising finance and restructuring management teams.

With these figures in mind, and with the business outlook more positive, could it be time to move about from the term ‘recovery’? Some companies refer to their services as ‘business continuance’ and this could be a more accurate description of the support available.

Since 2013 the number of company insolvencies has been on a decreasing trend. Between April and June of this year total company insolvencies in

By conjuring up a limited number of terms, the offer of business recovery support could be off-putting to some business owners. The offer of business continuity services could possibly be more appealing.

MANAGING THE RISK BUSINESS GROWTH – ARE YOU READY? BY PHIL MEEKIN FROM WILSON FIELD. inally, we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the economy is picking up. Naturally, as confidence grows, people start to look at ways in which they can grow their business. This is excellent news, but we must not forget that growth can be a risky time.

F

Any business – whether it is a micro business or a plc – which embarks on growth always faces an element of risk, particularly if heavy borrowing is involved to fund that growth. A lot depends on how the business grows and the size and type of business. Whether the business is supplying the consumer market or the B2B market, if it is diversifying it may be looking at increasing its product range or targeting a new market. In some instances companies may go down another route, such as acquisition; whether it be the acquisition of a competitor, a supplier or a customer. This can bring its own problems. There

may be synergies in merging businesses but do you have the right management structures and systems in place? And if they are in different locations, you can also have logistical issues to address. If you grow your own business, are taking on more staff or creating new products, always remember that cash is king. I have personally witnessed businesses cracking open the champagne to celebrate a huge new deal, but then catastrophically failing when they didn’t have the cash to complete the contract. Getting the balance right is crucial. Do you grow organically and reinvest your profits, allowing your business to grow

steadily? Or do you borrow as much as you can and expand rapidly? This is likely to depend on individual circumstances. Your company will probably not grow as quickly by playing it safe but if you aim for a higher return you inevitably increase the risks. So, at Wilson Field, as well as helping insolvent businesses we are focusing our support towards those that are able to survive. We are helping them overcome the financial blips that most companies face at one point or another. If we can help businesses to survive, this is good for us, good for the businesses that are surviving and, most importantly of all, great for the overall business economy.

THE SPIRIT OF CUBA

AFTER BLAZING A LATIN TRAIL IN THE EARLY NOUGHTIES, CUBANA ARE NOW FIRMLY ESTABLISHED AS ONE OF THE TOP PARTY VENUES IN THE CITY.

t was 15 years ago that Cubana burst onto the Sheffield nightlife scene, offering a burst of joyous Havana sunshine on a sleepy back street a short shimmy away from the city centre.

I

Looking at all the multicultural restaurants, bars and music venues in the city, it is easy to take the wide variety of food, drink and sounds from around the world for granted. But it hasn’t always been such a hotbed of diversity, and Cubana was one of the trailblazers that helped breathe new life into Sheffield. Now the salsa venue is celebrating a landmark anniversary… and it is as fresh and vibrant as ever. First unleashed on an unsuspecting public in November 2000, Latin music, salsa dancing, mouth-watering tapas food and colourful cocktails all blended, bringing people together in a fun and friendly setting. Now based in Leopold Square, the Latin beat pulses stronger than ever.

FIRST STEPS Co-owner Adrian Bagnoli first got into Latin music whilst visiting a popular Brazilian nightclub called the Maracanã in Florence, Italy. Adrian was amazed by the lively atmosphere and was convinced that this was exactly the

24

kind of night out Sheffield needed. “Back then, the only Latin music people knew was The Gipsy Kings and La Bamba,” explains Adrian. “We decided the time was ripe to introduce a bit more culture to Sheffield.” Adrian and friends Toni Dente and Gian Bohan started by launching a Viva Salsa night at local nightclub Club Uropa (formerly Isabellas), booking Brazilian DJ Marcus Vinicius and a live Brazilian band called Viramundo for the opening night. An astounding 700 people attended the first event in June 1996, making Sheffield’s first salsa club night an undeniable success. “This really paved the way for us,” says Adrian. “Calendar News came to cover it and the atmosphere was incredible. It gave us lots of confidence and we started booking touring bands from Cuba and Latin-American bands based in London and Manchester.” The final Viva Salsa took place in May 2000 and it was then that Adrian joined forces with Brad Charlesworth and Kito Morales to open Cubana on Trippet Lane.

“We offered something different – people felt like they’d discovered something great tucked away on this backstreet in the city centre,” says Adrian. “There wasn’t another tapas bar in Sheffield at the time. “We’d already built up contacts with the Latino community from the Viva Salsa night, so they were on board as soon as they discovered we’d be offering live music.”

CUBANA LIVE One of Cubana’s proudest moments was hosting a night at Music In The Gardens Festival 2010 in the Botanical Gardens. Cubana Live attracted a sell-out crowd of over 3,500 people and helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities. The extravaganza offered some of the most popular Latin artists, including Omar Puente and his band. The group arrived in chauffeur-driven 1957 Chevrolet convertibles and pulled up in front of the stage, before delivering an amazing performance. Omar Puente and his band

CUBANA MK. I – TRIPPET LANE Getting the look of the venue right was just as important as creating the authentic tapas dishes and cocktails, so Adrian employed talented architect and close friend Paul Brady, to capture a true Latin vibe.

DINING OUT

SPECIAL GUESTS Over the years, Cubana have been honoured to welcome many memorable guests. A visit from legendary Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club in 2007 was certainly a highlight and Adrian was overwhelmed when the band returned after their second Sheffield City Hall gig in 2008. Once at their new premises at Leopold Square, Cubana was given the ultimate seal of approval when Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of famous Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara, visited for dinner and posed for a picture underneath the portrait of her father. Buena Vista Social Club

Other notable guests include Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, once considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter of all time, who visited in 2003.

CUBANA MK. II – LEOPOLD SQUARE After 14 years building up a reputation as the most vibrant independent Cuban bar in Sheffield, it was time to say goodbye to Trippet Lane. Adrian discovered the two-level venue, formerly Platillos in Leopold Square had become available. After a discussion with business partner Brad, they decided the time was right to move. They enlisted the help of local artist Paul Staveley and Paul Brady once again to recreate Cubana’s trademark style. Just four days after closing the Trippet Lane venue, the new Cubana was opened. “We opened with a big party on Thursday 24 July. Over 400 people turned up and it was an incredible atmosphere,” Adrian recalls. “We knew right then, from everyone’s reaction that it was going to work.” Now offering two floors for two different nights out, diners can enjoy the cosy upstairs area or party downstairs. Cubana turn over around 300 diners on a Saturday night, many of which stay all night.

Salsa in the Square

“There’s great flavoursome food, courtesy of Chilean head chef Fabrian Cruz who has been in charge of kitchen affairs since day one, exotic cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out live music and vibrant music to dance to – all under one roof,” says Adrian. Cubana’s Salsa In The Square has also been a huge success. Since Cubana has taken over hosting the Bank Holiday Sunday extravaganza, attendance numbers have doubled and Cubana looks forward to offering a live Cuban salsa band, salsa lessons, dance demos and more in May 2016.

We’ll be treating that as our 15th birthday present.” If you’re looking for a lively venue with the full package, Cubana can provide the delicious food, the colourful cocktails and the live entertainment to start your festive season.

So, after 14 years brightening up Trippet Lane and a successful first year adding a vibrant mix of Cuban flavour to Leopold Square, how will Adrian and his team be celebrating their success? “Of course, there will be a big party, but Brad and I are going over to Cuba in January too,” says Adrian. “It’s such a great place and we’ll get loads of inspiration.

SHEFFEX: DEBATING THE FUTURE OF SHEFFIELD BUSINESS We are now just weeks away from the eagerly anticipated fourth SheffEX business event, which for the first time will be dedicated to understanding the key issues that will affect business in the city in 2016.

D

evolution, city centre redevelopment and advanced manufacturing; all hot topics and all firmly placed on the SheffEX agenda. Richard Caborn, the former government minister and newly appointed Business and Industry Envoy for Sheffield, will deliver a keynote speech at the event, which aims to delve deep into the key issues facing business in Sheffield in 2016. Currently one of the most talked about individuals in the Sheffield city region, Mr Caborn is heavily involved in some of the city’s most ambitious projects, including the Olympic Legacy Park, City Centre 2050 and Factory 2050, the first building on a new advanced manufacturing park on the site of the former Sheffield Airport. Of course, it was Mr Caborn who also secured £6million of Government funding 15 years ago for the original and phenomenally successful Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). Tony Carroll, who organises SheffEX along with brothers Mark and Andy McCormick, said: “One of the key aims of SheffEX is to give local companies a platform to shout about how great they are at what they do and how fabulous a city Sheffield is. Mr Caborn has achieved some

incredible things for the city and is the perfect individual to help highlight some of the excellent developments taking place within the city region. “For the first time, SheffEX will be taking advantage of its successful position on the business events calendar to delve into some of the biggest issues facing businesses in the near future. “Devolution in particular is a hot topic at the moment and who better to discuss the potential impacts than Mr Caborn? This Future of Business Conference is definitely one not to be missed.” Sponsored by Business Sheffield, the idea for SheffEX came about out of frustration that as a city Sheffield does not do enough to promote itself. The first event took place in June 2014 and proved such a success that a second event was soon planned for December of the same year. The third SheffEX took place in June of this year and on the day businesses were already signing up to secure their place for this December. Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, HR Media, Fortay Media, One2Call, Leo Wealth Management, Hart Shaw, The Children’s Hospital Charity, Wosskow Brown, Evoluted, The Met Club, Parcelhub, Franks & Co, Connect Gazelles and Identity Merchandise are just some of the confirmed exhibitors for the upcoming event. As well as the main exhibition and conference SheffEX will offer exciting networking opportunities and a line-up of influential speakers, to be announced in the lead up to the event. Business workshops will also be taking place throughout the day, giving delegates the opportunity to learn new skills or refresh their knowledge on a range of useful topics. SheffEX takes place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre from 9.30am to 4pm on Monday 7 December. Entry is free for pre-registered delegates. To register visit www.sheffex.com.

WORK EXPERIENCE

NOVEMBER 2015

www.ffb-online.co.uk

TALENT UNITED BARNSLEY COLLEGE LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVE. arnsley College is launching a new employer engagement initiative to businesses across Yorkshire – Talent United. The initiative will bridge the gap between education and employment and will provide employers with the opportunity to shape a generation of work ready young people.

B

Barnsley College currently works with over 2,000 employers and Talent United will further enhance these relationships through collaborative partnerships. Employers are invited to share their experience, expertise and knowledge with the college’s young people and have a positive influence on the workforce of tomorrow. Through consultation, employers acknowledged that whilst qualifications are important, work readiness and employability skills are of equal importance.

WHY JOIN TALENT UNITED? By joining this new initiative you can: • Help shape the curriculum and share the skills and knowledge needed in your industry • Showcase your business to some of the region’s most promising young talents • Join a network of like-minded employers, committed to raising aspirations and promoting

opportunities in Barnsley and across the region • Enlist the support of teams of young people to drive innovation in your business • Identify the best candidates for your business, ahead of the competition • Provide valuable work experience opportunities for young people • Inspire the employees of the future Businesses wishing to get involved with Talent United can have as much or as little involvement as they like. Ways of working with the initiative can include: • Taking on a work placement student • Having an apprentice work within your company as part of your workforce • Working with young people to educate them about what employers are looking for; this may be through interview coaching, giving career talks, mentoring • Setting young people a real-life business challenge Christopher Webb, Chief Executive and Principal of Barnsley College, said: “Talent United aims to make a difference and create opportunities which will influence the workforce of tomorrow. We would like businesses to become involved and share expertise and knowledge with our students.” Talent United is a very flexible initiative.

People wishing to offer support can give as much or as little time as they can spare. Even if a business can only dedicate half a day per year, this input can still benefit a young person, as well as the business. The initiative will give businesses recognition for their input in helping to shape the employees of the future. The college will provide an array of incentives to those who support Talent United, such as discounts on training and services, increased promotion, PR and advertising opportunities and business support. It will also arrange exclusive networking opportunities so getting involved is a real two-way relationship. Two events will take place during November to commemorate the launch of Talent United. A Breakfast Launch will be held on Tuesday 10 November, 8-10am, open to all businesses. A second event, in conjunction with The Federation of Small Businesses, will take place on Tuesday 17 November, 9.30am-1.30pm. Both events will be held at Barnsley College.

To find out more about Talent United, to offer support to the initiative or to enquire about the events, contact Barnsley College on: Tel: 01226 216166 Email: TalentUnited@barnsley.ac.uk www.barnsley.ac.uk Twitter: @Talent_United LinkedIn: Talent United

A GREAT PLACE TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS WITH BUSINESS AND JOB GROWTH HIGHER THAN BOTH THE REGIONAL AND NATIONAL AVERAGE, THE BEST PERFORMANCE IN THE UK FOR PRIVATE SECTOR EMPLOYMENT GROWTH AND A RECORD INCREASE IN PROPERTY ENQUIRIES, IT SEEMS THERE HAS BEEN NO BETTER TIME TO DO BUSINESS IN BARNSLEY. JULIE FARMER REPORTS. ver recent years, Barnsley’s reputation has experienced something of a turnaround. Having seemingly worked its way out of Sheffield’s shadow it is now being recognised as somewhat of a hub for business in its own right. And rightly so.

O

With a great location close to the M1 motorway, Barnsley enjoys excellent road, rail and air links to the rest of the UK and also the world. The town has ample development opportunities and there is no shortage of support available to companies looking to relocate or expand their existing business. Figures provided by business support organisation Enterprising Barnsley show that the buoyancy of the local economy has continued through 2015/16, leading to continued growth of business (8.8 per cent) and jobs (3.9 per cent) at a greater level than both regionally (8.4 per cent business; 3.1 per cent jobs) and national (7.1 per cent business; 3.2 per cent jobs). Barnsley also continues to exceed both the regional and national employment rate; and has recorded a greater rate of increase (2.1 per cent) in 2015/16 compared with the national level of 1.9 per cent.

36

Other great news is that new businesses are surviving for longer. Six years ago, in 2009, Barnsley was behind the national and regional business survival rates – now, the town has a higher one, two and four-year survival rate for businesses established in 2012, 2011 and 2009, compared with national and regional rates. The Centre for Cities (2015) report also reflects positive change and identifies Barnsley as the best performing city/town for private sector employment growth. While there was little change in private sector employment levels between 2013 and 2014 across the rest of the country, Barnsley topped the table with 9.5 percent growth. Barnsley is also ranked ninth for growth in private sector jobs over the last ten years. The town’s strong performance is helping to increase interest among

companies looking to relocate and expand into the area. During 2015/16 Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council recorded a 67 per cent increase in property enquiries, helping to secure over £8million of private sector investment and occupying 438,000 square feet of former vacant property. A further 130,000 square feet of industrial accommodation is currently ‘under offer’ and work is ongoing at Junction 36 of the M1 to provide further business premises via the council’s Property Investment Fund. Cllr Roy Miller, Barnsley MBC, said: “For Barnsley to record the largest increase in private sector employment out of all the 63 main towns and cities in the UK is fantastic news and shows that even despite these challenging economic times, Barnsley is a great place to invest and grow your business.”

“THE TOWN HAS AMPLE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF SUPPORT AVAILABLE TO COMPANIES LOOKING TO RELOCATE OR EXPAND THEIR EXISTING BUSINESS.”

HELP IS JUST A CLICK AWAY FLEDGLING ONLINE BUSINESSES GET A BOOST ACROSS THE REGION. fter a successful first intake of companies in Barnsley, the Click programme run by Enterprising Barnsley is now available to all companies across South Yorkshire.

A

With a focus on e-commerce, the Click programme offers a real focus to selling online for both new and existing companies. It’s a completely free fasttrack e-commerce accelerator being delivered by start-up experts Enterprise Nation on behalf of Enterprising Barnsley. The first set of companies taken into the programme have completed it and have all moved forwards with their plans.. One of the first companies to go through and benefit from the Click

“WE’RE REALLY PUSHING THE FACT THAT YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO RUN A BUSINESS NINE TO FIVE, MONDAY TO FRIDAY AS THE INTERNET HAS CHANGED THAT. SO WHY SHOULD BUSINESS SUPPORT STILL BE RUN IN THAT WAY?” 38

Programme was Teach You, who specialise in health and social care training and deliver qualifications across the UK. Established in 2013, Teach You’s mission is to improve the quality of care people receive through effective leadership in areas such as childcare, residential care and learning disabilities. Managing director, Kerri Hull, and her husband Rory worked in social care for 18 years before starting to develop their training programmes. These were delivered in a traditional face to face manner through one to ones or one too many sessions. The courses they have written and run received high acclaim and won them prestige contracts. They also knew there was a gap in the market for delivering the same high standard training course via e-learning, and whilst they had taken some steps to making the next stage a reality, they weren’t sure where to go next. When Tracey Johnson of Enterprising Barnsley contacted Kerri to tell her about the Click programme Kerri jumped at the chance. “It was the best thing that could have happened to us and it’s been so liberating,” said Kerri. “We had our e-learning platform built, but the Click programme tackled all of the issues which were stopping us moving forward. We have received training from different specialists, who have all been second to none. “We were also offered the opportunity to attend Enterprise Nation sessions in

London and a ‘Show Me the Money’ event at KPMG in Canary Wharf. “It’s been so helpful to look at different business models and learn how our own company could progress.” Kerri said: “Without the help of Enterprising Barnsley I just don’t think we would be where we are today.” Another company that has gone through the Click programme is Lacey Janes. After joining the programme as Flower Corner, owner Julie Nugent has completely changed her business, including the name. Julie Nugent has been running the Flower Corner florists in Barnsley for nine years and has always been creative about enticing people into her shop. But 18 months ago she was ready to let the business go. Flower sales were down and Julie’s time was taken up caring for her sick mother. So she decided to put the shop on the market. Luckily she changed her mind and now the business is going from strength to strength – but its growth has taken her in a totally new direction. Julie had always had an interest in vintage clothing and accessories and she decided to introduce a limited range of vintage inspired dresses into her shop. The vintage dresses flew off the shelves and Julie expanded the range and the sales kept coming. Julie’s customers started asking her

E-COMMERCE

Lacey Janes has transformed her florists business thanks to the help she received from the Click programme

where they could buy the products online and she realised that she needed a website. And that is where the Click ecommerce programme came in. “I signed up and they gave me all the information I needed,” said Julie. “And now if I’ve ever got problems I know I’ve got someone to talk to.” Advisors at Click showed Julie how to start an eBay shop, set up a website, write blogs, handle her own PR, produce newsletters and use social media. She now makes full use of Facebook and Instagram to promote her business. The flower shop is being scaled down, but the business, which is now called Lacey Janes, isn’t withering.

Julie, who is even considering moving to new premises, says she is grateful for the expertise offered by the Click programme. “Throughout the programme, Click has helped guide me in the right direction to take my business to the next level.” The current Click programme is aimed at getting more women trading online and is being funded by the Government Equalities Office through their Woman and Broadband fund. Sessions are being run throughout the region and are open to anyone who is thinking about starting a business in their spare time based around their family life, or expanding an existing business. Click is also building up an online

community to help support the companies that go through the programme. “As well as helping the companies directly, we want to create an environment available at any time where they can help each other.” Says Tracey Johnson of Enterprising Barnsley. “We’re really pushing the fact that you no longer have to run a business nine to five, Monday to Friday as the internet has changed that. So why should business support still be run in that way?” “We’re starting with a Facebook group, but the plan is to shortly launch an elearning system that covers all the topics covered in the Click programme that can be accessed by anyone at anytime from anywhere.”

You can join the Click Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/clicktogether and you can find full information about all upcoming events in the programme at www.enterprisenation.com/click. If you have any questions about the programme, please contact Ben Hawley on ben@enterprisenation.com.

CHRISTMAS

NOVEMBER 2015

www.ffb-online.co.uk

GET THE PARTY STARTED CHRISTMAS IS COMING AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT... SO GET THAT FESTIVE DO ORGANISED RIGHT NOW, SAYS STEPHANIE BURNS.

here’s no escaping it. However much we’d like to bury our heads in a cashmere sweater and refuse to accept that Christmas is a little over a few months away, the reality is unfortunately staring us in the face at every opportunity.

T

Christmas adverts will soon be creeping into our daily consciousness and it won’t be long before every department store in the land is blasting out Slade for all to hear. Now, the mavericks among us may already have decided to leave Christmas shopping until 24 December. Fine. The disappointment on your partner’s face when presented with exactly the wrong gift will only be scorched upon your mind for eternity. The rest of us, smug with our thoughtfully purchased presents, need not share your inevitable misery. But there is one festive tradition that may not simply be overlooked. There is no shortcut to it, nor is there any possibility of a last-minute plan. Because when a significant number of people are relying on you to deliver this specific slice

of Christmas joy, do you really want to be the one to let them down? It’s the annual Christmas bash and, if you’re responsible for organising it, you had better already have your act in gear. We’re talking exact numbers, an agreed date and a list of vegetarians. Once you’re armed with the essentials and have ironed out the requests of your fussier colleagues or friends, you can get down to the serious business of booking the all-important venue.

“WHEN A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF PEOPLE ARE RELYING ON YOU TO DELIVER THIS SPECIFIC SLICE OF CHRISTMAS JOY, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE THE ONE TO LET THEM DOWN?”

Thankfully for us Sheffield folk, we’re blessed with party venues aplenty. Be it the annual work booze up, a social night out with friends, or even the Christmas Day meal itself, there’s certainly no shortage of places to host your do. In fact, some of the best can be found over the next few pages. Whether you’re searching for a hotel, a restaurant, a pub or even a casino to make your event one to remember (for all the right reasons), City is here to recommend Sheffield and the surrounding region’s finest. And even though, with just weeks to spare, the most popular nights will have been booked months in advance by those organisers who live up to their name, fear not. For there will still be a final few places left to fill your partyshaped hole. But leave it any longer at your peril. Because, once Noddy Holder’s dulcet tones do begin to fill the chilly air, the final venues will almost certainly have been snapped up and you can wave goodbye to your Christmas bonus once and for all.

Queue For the Top… he largest golf resort operator in United Kingdom, QHotels recently celebrated the first anniversary of its acquisition of six former De Vere hotels and De Vere luxury lodges. And a visit to one such property, Mottram Hall in Cheshire, illustrates just why the company is such a success. The hotel creates an imposing impression from the moment you arrive at the 18th Century Hall via a long, sweeping tree-clad drive through to its high quality bedrooms, fine restaurants, golf course and spa. The quality of the course is one example of the many benefits of a unique golf membership scheme operated by QHotels – the QFairway club. The initiative is entirely flexible with up to 50 rounds of golf for a cost of only £375 per annum, with access to 11 impressive resorts operated by QHotels. The points-based membership gives golfers all the benefits of a full club membership – including the facility to hold a handicap and playing rights for club competitions – while offering discounts on food and drink, shop purchases, tuition and hotel bed-and-breakfast rates. More than 1000 new members have already signed up to the scheme, launched earlier this year, including hundreds of juniors. Membership of the QFairway club is so popular because it provides access to some of Britain’s top courses including Forest Pines in Lincolnshire (a favourite among Yorkshire golfers), Slaley Hall in Northumberland and Oulton Hall, here on our doorstep in Leeds. Mottram Hall is one such top, championship standard course, having hosted the 2013

T

European Seniors PGA Championship. The front nine is relatively flat and meanders through lush meadows and parkland but golfers should not be fooled: the back nine is harder with some daunting drives and carries as fairways bisect the densely wooded rough. The Mottram Hall golfing experience has recently been enhanced by a spectacular £1.5million refurbishment programme. The result is a modern but classical new clubhouse, encompassing a fine bar area and restaurant both offering panoramic views of the course. The new Halfway House could be a clubhouse in itself with a fully stocked bar, seating area and the provision of hot and cold snacks. Playing at a QHotels venue is particularly attractive for groups or golf societies in 2016, with prices being held at 2015 rates provided the booking is for 12 or more and made before the end of November this year. Prices, for new bookings only, at any of the 11 courses start at £79 per person for one

night’s dinner, bed-and-breakfast plus two rounds of golf. Two-night, three-round packages including dinner, bed-and-breakfast can be booked from £165 per person while discounts of up to 20% are available on drinks or groups of any size. Mottram Hall has many attractions other than the fine golf: it’s home to Britain’s first Alfresco Thermospace Spa; it houses a superb health club with great leisure facilities, while it is also a glorious wedding venue and the perfect setting to host a conference or event. The rooms have been impressively upgraded and the Carrington Grill serves wonderful food using Cheshire ingredients from local suppliers. The hotel offers a number of special breaks including residential Christmas and New Year ones. Details of these and the range of golf packages can be found at www.qhotels.co.uk or by calling 0845 2411320.

TEEING OFF IN TENERIFE AN INVITING CLIMATE AND STUNNING COURSES MAKE THE LARGEST OF THE CANARY ISLANDS AN IDEAL YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION FOR GOLFERS. BY JOHN MURPHY. raditionally Tenerife has been the first choice as a winter sun destination, offering the prospect of heat, fine beaches and a break from bleak British weather.

T

That perception is now changing with the realisation that the island, the largest of the Canaries, offers attractions as an all-year-round destination. The principal among these is the climate – temperatures average 22 degrees centigrade and 27 degrees is rarely exceeded. There is no variation in temperature between summer and winter months and it is increasingly seen as a better alternative to traditional summer destinations such as Spain and Portugal where temperatures can be oppressive in the summer months. The tourist industry is helping to encourage this influx of new visitors in the summer by offering attractive rates for hotels and for playing golf on the eight courses on the island. The mild but warm climate in the summer makes golf a pleasure in Tenerife and golf parties or couples would be well advised to consider the island as the ideal destination. Tenerife is just over four hours’ flight time away (Monarch fly from a number of UK airports) and one of the courses closest to the airport is Golf Las Americas. The verdant 18-hole course is formed from a natural amphitheatre of land with stunning views over the Atlantic and the island of La Gomera, home to the Canaries’ ninth golf course El Tecina. The par 72 was designed by John Jacobs and is a perfect example of a really good

50

Golf Las Americas

resort course. The fairways are enticingly wide as they snake around lines of pine and palm trees and the greens, with some undulations, are fair and true. The Bermuda grass on the fairways means that clean ball striking is the order of the day. It is not unduly long and some of the shorter par fours and fives offer the average club golfer the chance of that rare commodity: a birdie. A review would be incomplete without mention of the wonderful clubhouse with balconies overlooking the course and its exotic flowers and fauna. The quality of food and service is excellent as would be anticipated with it being part of the five-star Hotel Las Madrigueras resort. Many of the luxurious and spacious bedrooms, the terraces, the restaurant and the swimming pool overlook the course and it is ideally situated being close to both Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. As is the case with many golfing destinations, especially on the continent, courses such as Golf Las Americas are attached to a hotel which offers discounted rates to play and stay. The rates improve in the summer months so that one night’s bed and breakfast here for two plus one round of golf is offered

from 202 euros until 30 September 2015. The Abama course is another attached to a hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, where special rates are offered. The course contrasts markedly with Golf Las Americas; it is more of a stadium course with fair distances between tee and green which makes walking a challenge for anyone but the fittest. Any track where you have to avoid 22 lakes and 25,000 palm trees is tough and Abama certainly is a great test of golfing skills, or lack of them. Dave Thomas has used all his imagination to create some awe-inspiring holes hewn out of rocks and canyons which are a major feature of the landscape. The hotel offers a fine retreat from the rigours of the golf course with outstanding food, service and facilities. A golfing holiday to Tenerife would be incomplete without a visit to Golf Costa Adeje, arguably the flagship and most famous course on the island having staged the Spanish Ladies’ Open last September. The Pepe Gancedo layout is

the craggy landscape. A cable car will take you up to the very top of the volcano – although some hearty souls do attempt to walk.

highly unusual – raised terraces made from boulders run across a number of fairways, old farm walls line holes and some bunkers incorporate the volcanic signature sand of Tenerife. There is a sense that the course is longestablished and very traditional. This, plus the fantastic views, makes the course a pleasure to play. A number of holes have greens perched on the headland, framed by the azure colours of the ocean below. Other courses on the island include the Manuel Pinero modified Golf del Sur, the Donald Steel designed Amarilla Golf, the Ballesteros Buenavista, the very traditional Real Club de Golf de Tenerife, and Golf la Rosaleda. Further details of golf packages and special summer rates can be found at www.webtenerife.com/golf. Golf is not the only attraction on Tenerife. It’s home to 70 beaches, the

majority of which have been awarded blue flag status. It’s an island of two halves; the lush north of the island complements the sunny and dry south, shielded from the wind and humidity by a mountainous landscape which divides the island into two different worlds. At the heart of the mountainous range is the Tiede National Park which features the spectacular Mount Tiede. Vast volcanic craters greet the visitor and imprints of lava flows remain etched on

Whale and dolpin watching is also popular. The waters around the island are home to about 400 short-finned pilot whales and numerous bottlenose dolphins and tours are available all year round. Tenerife also has a well-deserved reputation as a culinary destination with its excellent food being complemented by some award-winning local wines which owe their success both to great imagination and the subtropical climate.

In addition to Hotel Las Madrigueras, visitors might want to consider the plush five-star Iberostar Anthelia Golf del Sur Hotel or the comfortable and friendly Hotel Suite Villa Maria – also five-star. The former offers discounted packages to stay and play at Golf Las Americas and Costa Adeje while the latter offers three nights bed and breakfast from 197 euros per person until the end of September including two green fees, unlimited golf at Costa Adeje, buggies, lunchtime buffet at the course and taxes.

WORK AND PLAY A MONTHLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS, ACHIEVEMENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND NEW FACES

BEER CHAMPION ALEX BARLOW HAS SOMETHING SPECIAL BREWING… Award-winning employment lawyer Jay Bhayani is celebrating her first year in business by throwing a charity Bollywood ball on 7 November.

CUTLERS HOTEL CELEBRATES RELAUNCH Saxon Hotels Ltd has relaunched the Best Western Cutlers Hotel in the heart of Sheffield’s city centre. Saxon Hotels has owned Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel since 2004, and in June 2013 reopened Whirlowbrook Hall in Sheffield’s S11. In December 2014 the Sheffield based leisure and hospitality business owned by Greg Dyke, current Chairman of the FA, purchased the Best Western Cutlers Hotel after it fell into administration. After months of extensive refurbishment, including creating a new look breakfast room and an open plan lounge bar area (renamed 1857), the hotel hosted a VIP launch evening. The bar has been named 1857 as the hotel is situated at the site where Sheffield FC (the world’s oldest football club) was formed. Greg Dyke and special guest Carolyn Fairbairn, who is soon to be Director General of the Confederation of British Industry, were on hand to cut the ribbon. Greg Dyke said: “I am delighted that we have been able to restore this property to its former glory. The hotel is steeped in history and fond memories for many people in Sheffield. We know it will once again be the ideal place for people to stay when visiting the city. The newly built bar 1857 will give guests a great place to start their evening out in the city.”

56

And partner Alex Barlow, a master brewer and flavour expert who works with beer brands around the globe, is creating a unique ale especially for the event at Attercliffe’s Arooj Banqueting Suite. Glasses of his special brew will greet the 300 guests on arrival, and will be on sale at the pumps all evening. “My Sentinel Brewery, which launches in Sheffield this year, has produced limited edition brews for all sorts of events, including recent beer festivals at The Rising Sun at Nether Green and the Devonshire Cat. It seemed the obvious thing to create a beer especially for Bhayani HR & Employment Law’s celebration,” explained Alex. “I used knowledge I’d gained recently from creating a beer and food-pairing list for a group of top London curry houses and from developing two recipes for an Indian beer distributor. “The spicy flavours occurring naturally from the rye malt and hops will be complemented by a dash of cumin and cardamom at the last hop addition.” Alex runs ALL BEER in Sheffield, which helps found and develop breweries worldwide, is a beer presenter at Hartington’s School of Food ‘Beer School’ in Tideswell and the chief sommelier for the Beer Academy in London.

GLOBAL LAW FIRM ANNOUNCES NEW OFFICE IN SHEFFIELD Fragomen Worldwide, a leading legal services provider with more than 40 offices around the world, has announced plans to establish a second UK office in Sheffield. The firm has plans to create more than 100 new jobs in Sheffield over the next 12 to 18 months, and more than 50 in 2016 alone. Fragomen advises clients on their immigration needs and represents clients in a variety of industries across all sizes from sole traders and private clients to large multinational corporations and FTSE 100s. Caron Pope, UK managing partner commented: “This new office enables the firm to meet the growing demand for our services and provides greater access to new markets in the UK. By selecting Sheffield, the firm benefits from close proximity to the UK Home Office, leading UK universities and businesses outside of London. “Our two offices in the UK will enable us to continue to grow and diversify services across the country.” The firm is taking 12,000 square feet of floor space in Saville House, a prominent landmark building situated at a key gateway into the city centre.

WINNERS CELEBRATE AT CCISY ANNUAL AWARDS Representatives from housing providers and construction firms across South Yorkshire came together in October to attend the Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards (CCISY). The awards, held at the Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield, were endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Building working in collaboration with Little Spark and sponsored by CITB Construction Skills and CSCS. The CCISY awards promoted a range of different sectors essential to the delivery of innovative construction, from empowering communities through corporate social responsibility and investing in skills, to creating low carbon developments and being environmentally pro-active. Winners were Sarah Burke – Avonside (Achiever of the Year Award), National Federation of Builders (Collaborative Working Award), Interserve Construction (Contractor of the Year Award), Keepmoat – Thurnscoe Alliance (Corporate Responsibility Award), Henry Boot Construction (Health & Safety Award), Citu – Little Kelham (Innovation Award), Stradia (Project of the Year Under £5m Award), Doncaster Council – FARRRS (Project of the Year Over £5m Award), Carmody Construction (Sustainability Award), Futureworks Yorkshire (Team of the Year Award), St Leger Homes (Training Award) and Curtis Baker – Togel Contractors (Young Trainee of the Year Award). They demonstrate what can be achieved through strong partnerships, a clear vision and delivery through high quality implementation.” The chosen charity for CCISY this year was The Children’s Hospital Charity and £2,500 was raised on the night to support their work at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

10 THINGS... I HOPE TO ACHIEVE DURING MY 12 MONTHS AS MASTER CUTLER BY CRAIG McKAY. ew Master Cutler Craig McKay is CEO of Sheffield engineering firm Evenort and, at 45, is one of the youngest ever Master Cutlers. The 377th Master Cutler has a ten-point plan for his term of office, involving manufacturing, education, foreign travel and an expanding wardrobe.

N 1

PUBLICISE THE STRENGTH AND POTENTIAL OF MANUFACTURING IN SHEFFIELD CITY REGION (SCR) TO AS WIDE AN AUDIENCE AS POSSIBLE Manufacturing is still this region’s future, and we will remain until the Government delivers the balanced economy we deserve by outperforming the competition with new products and processes. Stay in the game is the message at the moment!

SUPPORT THE DEVOLUTION AGENDA IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE 2

Businesses are crucial to the success of devolution in England. We are the ones who will create the jobs and deliver the growth detailed in local government plans. This opportunity could succeed just as easily as it could fail: a supportive, vocal business sector could make all the difference.

ENCOURAGE GOVERNMENT TO DEVELOP A REAL INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY AND DO MORE THAN PAY LIP SERVICE TO THE IMPORTANCE OF MANUFACTURING 3

Industry still suffers from the lack of joined up thinking from central

58

government. How about using The new nuclear programme in the UK to deliver competitive energy prices to UK manufacturers rather than signing us up to a pay-as-you-go deal on energy rates that are twice the current rate?

4 RUN A TRADE MISSION TO CANADA The growth that this region requires can only come from international trade. Businesses in the region (mine included) need to have a go at exporting, learn how to do it and work up from there.

ACT AS A UNIFYING FORCE IN THE CITY REGION TO BRING TOGETHER COUNCILS, CHAMBERS AND BUSINESSES 5

In SCR, we tend to act in silos and there is a great deal of duplication. Keep it simple folks. And, if you ever have a problem, don’t forget that the Company of Cutlers is neutral ground.

6

LEAVE THE COMPANY IN EVEN BETTER SHAPE THAN WHEN I WAS INSTALLED My predecessor left the company in good order but there is more still to be done to improve our impact and our support of Freemen and Friends. I will maintain a dialogue to ensure continuous improvement.

DEVELOP THE CUTLERS’ ‘MADE IN SHEFFIELD’ EDUCATION SCHEME SO THAT IT IS CITY REGION WIDE AND SUSTAINABLE 7

We have a fantastic engineering escalator in Sheffield right now. This year

18 apprentices from the AMRC training centre have been given the opportunity to progress to a foundation degree in Engineering from Sheffield University. Our education program is a vital piece in this jigsaw, promoting career opportunities and developing the skill sets and attitudes that employers need to succeed. We are now taking steps to extend it outside Sheffield to SCR.

8

ENSURE THAT MY BUSINESS CONTINUES TO GROW IN MY ABSENCE It is well known that in order to succeed you should surround yourself with people better than yourself. I have done this and now sit back, watching with interest. All goes well so far.

9

HAVE GREAT FUN

The Cutlers’ coat of arms can be seen everywhere within the building with the motto: ‘Pour y parvenier a bonne foi’. A recent modern translation by my house guest, French mountain biker and engineer, Yohann Leburillier, was ‘to succeed while having a good time’. It’s not quite correct according to scholars but I will settle for that.

COME OUT LIGHTER THAN I CAME IN (FORMAL DINNERS ALMOST EVERY NIGHT MIGHT MAKE THIS A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE) 10

The mistress is being very careful eating salads every day but I have a different strategy involving bigger trousers. Watch this space because I may grow into it.
