Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity Dale Murten Wealth Management is inviting readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control.

M

ore and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee.

And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government and subject to further legislation the

freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation. Dale Murten of Dale Murten Wealth Management, a local Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “AWill* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said Dale. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving

themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, please contact Dale Murten Wealth Management. The Residence Lakeside stands by a 50-acre lake (above) while the show homes have been styled by the David Phillips Group to show off the spacious interiors (right)

Development in demand New homes at The Residence, Lakeside, prove popular with buyers

M

use Developments is celebrating a fantastic response from buyers to its eagerly anticipated The Residence, Lakeside, residential scheme in Doncaster, with an unprecedented 15 homes snapped up just one month since its launch. The scheme, which features a collection of 51 luxury two, three and four-bedroom homes at the edge of more than 50 acres of lake, proved popular with a range of purchasers with first-time buyers, second steppers, parent purchasers and investors amongst the first to secure a home in this sought-after waterside location. Prospective buyers can now tour two new show homes; a two-bed, ‘Cobham’ home and a three-bed ‘Lysander’, which have been stylishly furnished and finished by interior design company David Phillips Group to showcase the modern, spacious interiors. Hollie Reynolds, residential sales and marketing manager at Muse Developments, said: “We knew that there would be a high demand from buyers as we’d had over 300 enquiries in the lead up to the launch, but the response to the show homes was overwhelmingly positive. Visitors were really impressed with the high quality finish, as well as the design and layout of the homes. The extra special details, such as en-suites to the majority of master bedrooms and the eco-friendly

design, really struck a chord with buyers who were keen to reserve their plot right away.” There are currently a number of three bedroom homes from £186,500 and four bedroom lakeside homes from £249,950 still available to buy in the first release at the scheme. Each home features a private garden,

a modern, integrated kitchen and bathroom and private parking, and several come complete with garage. The development features a number of elegant three/four bedroom town houses, thoughtfully-conceived over three floors and nestled at the water's edge. As well as offering a spacious, integrated kitchen/diner, three double bedrooms and a single, and en-suites, each town house also features an outdoor terrace offering stunning vistas of the lake beyond. The Residence Lakeside is close to a number of local schools with great local amenities, including Lakeside Village and Doncaster Dome, and tranquil lakeside walks, cycling routes and greenery, on its doorstep. There are a range of buying schemes available, which include the popular Government-backed equity loan scheme ‘Help to Buy’ which enables first-time buyers and those looking to move up the ladder to purchase a new home with just a 5 per cent deposit. To book an appointment to view the show homes email sales@theresidence lakeside.co.uk or call 01302 898571. How to enter: Visit the Eastside champagne lawn at the Grand St Leger Hotel between 11am and 1pm on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of Leger week and have your photograph taken. The winners will receive prizes worth £100s and will be revealed in our November edition.

After the great success of last year’s inaugural Eastside champagne lawn at the Grand St Leger Hotel, the venue is once again hosting its Best Dressed Man and Best Dressed Couple competition. “We see so many people who make such an effort, not just the ladies but the men too, and we wanted to acknowledge that,” said Grand St Leger’s owner John Din. The hotel has a long-standing association with Doncaster Racecourse and is a favourite spot for racegoers to enjoy a tipple or two before heading across the road to the racecourse.

Eastside and Doncaster Racecourse photo frame Eastside’s Terri and Rebecca (pictured below) will be back at the racecourse once again this year with their fabulous photo frame. As the official media partner, we’re primed and ready to snap Doncaster’s most beautiful racegoers. All photographs will be posted on our Facebook page and the hottest selection will feature in the magazine’s society pages. So, if you want to show off your outfits, and be part of Leger history, be sure to grab the girls when you see them.

ES Health

Many people have contacted Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies asking about what REFLEXOLOGY can do and how it works.

I

Holidays - 25 days plus statutory Bank Holidays - Pro-rata

've found that reflexology is enjoying increasing popularity, as it is an excellent way to improve and maintain your health by natural, drug-free treatment. Generally we are more health and fitness conscious that we used to be and reflexology is just one of the natural methods by which we can achieve the aim of good health. It is a gentle form of natural healing that involves treatment by massage to the reflex areas, which are in the feet and hands. As this offers a way of treating the whole body, it can help a wide range of disorders, from digestive problems, kidney problems, hormonal problems, to arthritis and numerous conditions. It is a treatment that is suitable for every age from children to the elderly, men and women. Having been involved with reflexology for well over a decade, it is wonderful to see the growing interest in something that can be helpful to so many people without harmful side-effects. It still never ceases to give me enormous pleasure when people respond well to the treatment and are cleared of problems that, often, have been troubling them for many years. Reflexology is very simple, but it is capable of bringing about remarkably good results.

Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry www.ElizabethAnnBawtry.com Dear Liz I keep getting infections, have no energy and always feel poorly. Every time I think I'm starting to get better, I come down with another virus or ailment. I feel very low and just never seem to be in full health these days, which is really getting me down. Is there anything that I can do to try and help myself? Dear Christopher It sounds like your immune system is low. The immune system is there to fight infections and prevent them from causing trouble in the body. It is important to have a strong and healthy immune system. Reflexology mentioned above is a very good therapy to help you. For those with a tendency to suffer infections, a reflexologist would work on the lymphatic system reflexes which would help strengthen the immune system in the body, therefore helping it to overcome the infection present and be more ready to fight future infections. If the immune system is strong, then the body is less likely to succumb to infection. Reflexology is available with me at The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry.

New style dancing arrives with the introduction of the Jive into British dancehalls in 1945

Cast, Doncaster’s new homegrown production, Dancehall, is the story of Doncaster from the dancefloor. After the smash hit successes of The Glee Club and Barry Hines’ Kes, Dancehall, featuring a community ensemble performing alongside professional actors, is the venue’s latest homegrown production in association with Right Up Our Street, at Cast from Friday 11 – Saturday 19 September. As with all of Cast’s homegrown productions the local area and community are at the heart of Dancehall. Research into

Doncaster’s history and dance hangouts has been taking place in earnest over the past year, with artist and dramaturg, Gareth Morgan, tasked with realising the history and personal stories of Doncaster’s many dancehall’s over the past few decades. “Dancehall is a story for the people of Doncaster who have lived, loved and danced there. However, for me, it isn't a dance show, it's storytelling, where you'd usually have a line of dialogue spoken by a character telling you what's going on we'll have a gesture or move. We’re also trying to get all the dance styles in there - from krumping to quick-step.” You might not be familiar with krumping, but fortunately Gareth is; “Krumping is a high-energetic street dance, and it’s a great example of the diversity in the show and how you don’t need to be familiar with any particular style or era, or

ES Tried and Tested

Sun, here I come! Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Moore enjoyed some pre-holiday pampering at three local businesses.

Red 10 Terri’s nails were transformed by Shaun Wilkins, a nail technician who qualified in 2008 before training as an educator. He has been teaching at Red 10 for the last year. Red 10 offers nail sculpting, rather than tips, which are healthier for your Before own nails and last longer. As her nails had been bare for a while, Terri was advised to have an almond/point shape. Shaun then set to work trimming the cuticles back and buffering the natural nail before applying the Hand & Nail Harmony Perfetto Nail Forms, which are designed to fit all nail types and are sure to hold in place. The forms provide consistent c-curves and have imprinted guidelines for consistent length and shapes. The locking tabs provide a controlled fit

on all finger sizes, making them ideal for all nails. When the forms were applied, Terri was able to choose her desired nail length. Shaun then sculpted the false nail with sculpting powder before filing and buffing. Once dry, the artwork began. From a huge range of

options, Terri chose two nails – one shimmery pink gelish and one black with white nail art that was expertly created by hand. “The treatment took two hours in total and it was a mesmerising experience,” said Terri. “It was amazing watching how talented Shaun is at creating lovely nails from what is essentially just powder! The flowers are incredible – Red 10 do nails as a form of art. The results should last between six and eight weeks, with infills required every three to four weeks. 2 Wharfe House, Richmond Business Park, Sidings Court, Doncaster DN4 5NL Tel: 01302 340550 www.red10trainingacademy.co.uk

Terri visited lead therapist Shanee Adams at the centre to get her eyes in shape for her summer holiday. First, her naturally long and dark eyelashes were tinted with the darkest shade. Once this had taken effect, the solution was wiped off and individual lashes were glued on. These lashes last up to a week, or longer if they are well cared for. Terri’s eyebrows were then tinted and waxed to her desired shape, leaving her with perfect peepers. “There is a relaxed friendly atmosphere and Shanee keeps you at ease throughout the treatment,” said Terri “She explains what she is doing at every stage and offers plenty of aftercare advice too.” Aurora runs on fundraising alone and all money collected at the centres is put towards free holistic and beauty treatments for diagnosed patients. So, you can make yourself feel good in and out by having your beauty treatments at the centres and, in

doing so, helping those in need. The free treatments for patients are part of a free package of support and, along with wellbeing programmes, help to raise their self-esteem and confidence. There are five centres, each providing friendly support and a calming sanctuary, in Doncaster, Mexborough, Worksop and Bassetlaw, where highly trained therapists and volunteers understand how to help people throughout their cancer journey. Shanee began volunteering at Aurora before becoming employed in 2004. She was then diagnosed with cancer and went through the service as a patient so she knows from personal experience the benefits of the wellbeing centres. After two years of being cancer-free, she returned to Aurora as lead therapist. 18 Scot Lane, Doncaster DN1 1LD Tel: 0300 011 1202 www.aurorawellbeing.org.uk

StarStyle For a last minute boost of bronze before her holiday, Terri visited StarStyle’s VersaSpa automated spray tan booth, which provides a natural-looking tan that lasts up to a week. The private booth allows you to be naked so you won’t be left with tan lines, and it fades like a real tan so there’s no danger of unsightly streaks or patches. When Terri arrived at StarStyle, the procedure was explained in full by owner Melanie. She described how the booth works, warned that the mist can affect asthma and is sugar-based so is unsuitable for diabetes sufferers, and explained that it doesn't contain UV protection. Terri was then asked to decide what kind of tan she would like.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

The instant tan starts developing immediately and takes four to six hours to fully develop, and the clear tan – which Terri chose – starts to develop two hours later, doesn’t mark your clothes and takes six to eight hours to fully develop. Melanie provided a shower cap and footies, moisturized the palms of Terri’s hands, and then showed her the four positions she was required to adopt while the solution was being sprayed. “As it was my first time, Melanie stood at the other side of the curtain to talk me

Holiday countdown One week before Book a hair appointment a week in advance of your holiday to ensure your locks are in prime condition – and you’re used to styling your new ‘do well before you go. Three days before Schedule your pre-holiday wax and eyebrow shaping no later than three days before you fly. This will give the skin plenty of time to heal so there’s no chance of red, blotchy patches ruining an otherwise polished look. A pampering mani/pedi at this stage will also help you escape the stress of packing. Day before Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. To achieve an even tan, sloughing away dead skin should already be a regular part of your summer beauty regime. Giving yourself a thorough scrubbing the night before your holiday will rid the upper layers of any residual rough spots. This is also the best time to apply your lashes to give them the best chance of staying put throughout your holiday. While you’re there There are three key components to maintaining a healthy body while you’re away; oodles of SPF (at least factor 15), plenty of moisturiser and a box of multi-vitamins. Nail these basics and everything else will fall into place.

through each move, even though the machine prompted me, too,” said Terri. “It moisturized first, then tanned and then dried me. The full process took around two minutes.” Afterwards, Melanie advised Terri to avoid tell-tale orange palms by washing her hands with water and dabbing dry one hour after the treatment, and then washing with soap after six hours. StarStyle also offers blow dries, pin ups, Gelish nails, princess parties, Larissa coffee and a milkshake bar, as well as a huge selection of unusual gifts at reasonable prices. The current loyalty scheme invites customers to enjoy their sixth tan half price.

Local developers are taking advantage of buoyant demand for new homes with superb developments.

T

here’s no denying the housing business is booming in Doncaster, with new home developments cropping up everywhere. Excellent transport links, schools and plenty of nearby attractions such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Park are just a few reasons why it has become a hotbed for developers in recent years and Muse Developments and Mell Homes are two businesses that are driving forward new residential projects, adding to the already thriving new-home development scene.

Muse Developments Award-winning Muse Developments is behind two of Doncaster’s newest residential schemes. Hollie Reynolds, residential sales and marketing managers at Muse Developments says: “The Gables, our town centre scheme, which features one and two-bedroom homes, has been popular with first-time buyers and downsizers looking for a low-maintenance, high-quality home with all the benefits of town-centre living. “Those looking for a more serene setting can choose from our collection of luxury two, three and fourbedroom homes at The Residence Lakeside at the edge of more than 50 acres of lake and greenery. These properties are great for families looking for a lasting home. “I think more buyers are being attracted back to the market in Doncaster thanks to a huge amount of investment in the town over recent years. The government-backed Help to Buy scheme has also played an important

part, by helping buyers step onto, and up, the property ladder with just a five per cent deposit.” One-bedroom homes at The Gables start from £99,950 and two-bedroom homes from £129,950.The Residence features two-bedroom homes from £147,500, three-bedroom homes from £186,950 and four-bedroom Lakeside homes from £249,950.

Mell Homes Mell Homes is an award-winning family-run business, passionate about building welldesigned, high-quality luxury homes. They build exclusively in carefully chosen locations within South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire, where the Mell name has become

synonymous with high-quality craftsmanship. Each site is carefully selected and designed to harmonise sympathetically with its surroundings. They are proud to present Briars Fold, a unique development of one, three, and fourbedroom homes. This exclusive collection from their heritage range offers rural village living within easy reach of the region’s excellent road, rail and air networks. Briars Fold is also close to some superb local schools, including The Hayfield School, which is consistently one of Doncaster’s top performers. Briars Fold homes start from £159,995. Visit their show home and sales centre Thursday-Monday 10am-4pm, to see the luxury homes for yourself. Briars Fold, Mosham Road, Blaxton, DN9 3FF

ES Visit Bawtry

Glamorous guests enjoyed picnics by the pitch at this year’s record-breaking Visit Bawtry Polo Cup.

T

he fourth annual Visit Bawtry Polo Cup on Sunday 5 July raised its biggest amount so far for local cancer charity Aurora Wellbeing Centres. The exciting event was attended by a record 800 people with a staggering £9,200 raised in just a matter of hours thanks to the support of the Bawtry Retail Association, Robinsons of Bawtry and sponsors Green Eco Grants Ltd. The charity knock-out polo event took place at the Vale of York Polo Club at Misson with eight teams sponsored by Bawtry businesses taking to the pitch to do battle. Glamorous guests watched from the sidelines with picnics and from the comfort of the Robinsons champagne marquee, which had catering, live music by the fabulous VIBE jazz band and a champagne and Peroni bar. Robinsons of Bawtry organised a raffle, which raised £2,300 for the charity, with the first prize champagne hamper being presented to Nick Bennett. The teams made up of local businesses were The Crown Hotel, China Rose, Fine and Country, Robinsons of Bawtry, The Vanilla Rooms, Suttons Capital Allowances, Max Design Consultancy and Yasmine of Bawtry, with the final taking place between Max Design Consultancy and The Vanilla Rooms. “Our teams gave it their all and the crowd really entered into the spirit of the day

44

making it a truly memorable event,” said Rebecca Dickenson, chair of Bawtry Retail Association and director of The Vanilla Rooms. “I am particularly proud of my team, for which I played as patron for the second year running, as we finally managed to knock the previously undefeated winners, the Crown Hotel, from the podium and seized the cup with a 2-0 win!” In addition to the excitement of the polo matches, spectators battled it out to claim the Best Picnic Table sponsored by Debenhams, which was won by the Bagley family. China Rose of Bawtry sponsored the Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gent, which was won by Annabelle Boyle and Jamie Loftus, managing director of Green Eco Grants Ltd. And guests looked on in Words: Phoebe Seymour

amazement as they were treated to an unexpected fly past by a Vulcan bomber. “This was our first time at the Visit Bawtry Polo Cup and we were delighted to be associated with such an amazing event which has generated so much money for this fantastic local charity,” said Jamie. “The team spirit and atmosphere were superb – a real testament to the hard work and dedication of Robinsons of Bawtry and the Bawtry Retail Association.” During the event spectators enjoyed a hog roast and polo-themed barbecue by Jaysters Catering and The Pizza Guy served delicious gourmet pizzas from his wood-fired oven. The Thaymar Ice Cream Van and The Street Caffe provided tasty treats, while more than 100 bottles of champagne and prosecco were sold from by 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro. “This was another superb event and we thank everyone for their generous donations to our charity,” said Peter Bradley, campaign manager of Aurora Wellbeing Centres. “This event is becoming a significant contributor to our fundraising and we look forward to their ongoing support.” Next year’s event will take place on Sunday 3 July 2016. Good food, big style! Even a small-scale dinner for two can be a main event at The Crown Hotel, says Chris Wilson.

F

rom grand weddings to business conventions, The Crown Hotel takes big events in its stride. And when the good people of Bawtry come out to play, the bar is a busy and bustling venue that’s hard to beat. But what about something a shade more intimate? Instead of the society bash of the year, or a big Saturday night out, what about a cosy dinner for two? What indeed? Those sleek leather booths, glass chandeliers, and low-key lighting effects are perfect for a gently relaxing evening and the menu is varied enough to satisfy any palate. We visited on a gorgeous sunny evening and the relaxed, attentive service was just the thing to set us at ease. If you are struggling to decide, one of The Crown’s trademark sharing platters – a very popular lunch choice where it is ideal with a glass or two of Prosecco – is the perfect way to start your meal. We chose the seafood variety and were hugely impressed with the selection of moules mariniere, smoked salmon, mini fish and chips, tempura chilli squid, king prawn cocktail, tartare sauce and baked bread. This was a stylishly presented plate of food and the individual components – from the plump and juicy prawns to the crisp battered fish – combined to make a very satisfying whole. There is a fine selection of sensibly priced wines too and a lovely glass of chilled Gavi proved to be the perfect accompaniment to a classy starter. I stuck with seafood for my main course, which turned out to be a classic combination of hearty ingredients, combined to make a savoury and comforting dish. A generous fillet of cod

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

loin, pure white, moist and flaky, was placed on a bed of spinach and a foundation of spring onion mash, with a tangy cheese sauce glaze. This was confident, straightforward cooking at its best. When the core ingredients are this good, why over-elaborate? The same could be said for our other main course; fillet steak with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, handcut chips and onion rings. A dish like this demands superlative meat and this was one very special steak. The fillet was cooked rare, as requested (is there any other way?). Every mouthful of tender, juicy meat was a flavoursome delight; with properly crunchy chips and onion rings and a hugely powerful blue cheese sauce, it was a classic dish to remember with relish. The dessert menu brought on another crisis of indecision, happily resolved by our selection of the Crown Platter, a “greatest hits” selection of sweet treats to share. Portions are modest and it is a great opportunity to sample Eton mess, chocolate brownie, bakewell tart, clotted cream, caramel and honeycomb ice cream. With excellent coffees to finish and a lovely, relaxed setting, it is clear that Bawtry’s favourite big venue also does the small stuff rather well.

Tradition with a twist Phoebe Seymour discovers that there’s more to The Blacksmith’s Arms than meets the eye…

T

he Blacksmith Arms may look like your average country pub, but there is much more to the Everton establishment than simple bar food and beer. If you are after a casual meal, there are plenty of options in the traditional, lowbeamed setting of the bar, but if you want to celebrate the weekend in style, The Wild Boar Restaurant and Grill in the spacious conservatory extension is the best place to try familiar dishes with a classy twist. You’ll find a range of fish and meat mains served in a number of exciting sauces – all homemade and impressively presented by their chef. After being seated by our friendly and attentive waitress Sue, my dining partner and I are promptly served a basket of bread and a large bottle of water whilst we peruse the menu. I order the tempura-battered prawns to start and the duo of tuna and swordfish served in a Jamaican sauce for my main. My partner asks if he can have the antipasti for one rather than the standard sharable platter for two and we are assured this is no hassle at all. For his main, he orders the chicken in an intriguing Jack Daniels sauce. The batter on my tempura prawns is surprisingly light, bubbly and non-greasy. Sat on a bed of salad, the ring of balsamic vinegar and pot of sweet chilli sauce give this starter an irresistible zing. My partner’s antipasti is a bit of everything, with slices of wholemeal

bread and butter, gherkins, caramelised red onions, pickled onions, black and green olives, a selection of salamis and a smoky slice of prosciutto. Our mains are served with a side dish of buttery roasted vegetables including courgettes, leeks and carrots. The Jamaican sauce on my fish is sweet and is topped with chunks of sultanas and pineapple. The

What we ate: Starters Tempura battered prawns, £5.95 Antipasti for two, £9.95 Mains Duo of tuna and swordfish, £13.95 Chicken Jack, £10.95 Desserts Homemade salted caramel and milk chocolate tart, £4.45 Triple layered hot chocolate fudge cake, £4.45 Drinks Half a pint of Strongbow, £1.75 The Blacksmith Arms Church Street, Everton, Doncaster, DN10 5BQ Tel: 01777 817281 Email: chriswallis@blacksmithsarmseverton.com www.blacksmithsarms-everton.com

swordfish falls apart easily, whilst the tuna steak is a little tougher and juicier. This is broken up nicely by the dome of lime-infused rice. The Jack Daniels sauce is creamy, whilst the hint of whiskey gives the chicken more depth. This is served with a column of halfmashed potatoes and sprinklings of parsley. Finally, I select a cool salted caramel and chocolate tart, whilst my partner has the warm, gooey chocolate fudge cake accompanied by a scoop of chocolate chip ice cream from the desserts board. The cake is perfect for chocolate lovers, whilst the caramel and chocolate mousse on my biscuit tart is both sweet and savoury. The Blacksmith Arms has been a family run pub and restaurant since September 2010, owned by Dave and Mandy, and partly managed by their son Chris. They pride themselves on being a local, country pub, but their staff are equally welcoming to outsiders such as myself. There is plenty more on offer this summer, with a patio beer garden and children’s play area too. And as the bar area starts filling up and music floats through to the conservatory on this lively Friday evening, I’m tempted to hang around for the pub quiz hosted by Chris at 9pm. So whether you want a traditional pub menu or an extra special dining experience, you will find the best of both at The Blacksmith Arms.

Come into the Kitchen Take seasonal dishes, the finest ingredients and add the joy of cooking for a truly authentically Italian dining experience. Words and photography: Fiona Barber

ake a stroll down St Mary’s Road in Tickhill, turn in to the courtyard and down the grey cobbles and you will uncover the delights of truly authentic restaurant, Roccos Italian Kitchen. We arrived one warm summer’s evening and were greeted by couples and families making the most of the weather and outside seating. General manager Alison Lomax says they pride themselves on being a family-friendly venue. “We have a children’s menu, but there’s no chicken nuggets and chips here.” Instead, the children’s menu features a variety of pasta dishes, homemade cod goujons and the ever-popular build-your-own pizza, where children get to choose up to three toppings for their pizza. The main menu is just as impressive. Head chef Chris Irwin prides himself on keeping dishes seasonal and making the most of ingredients. Inspiration is taken from many different regions of Italy and the results are exquisite, with a fine selection of meat, fish, pizza and pasta dishes, as well as daily specials. The warm evening called for something refreshing and a chilled glass of sauvignon blanc was the ideal accompaniment to my starter of gamberetti all'aglio. Juicy tiger prawns sautéed in garlic butter and parsley came served with a thin and crispy cheese garlic bread – ideal for dipping into the luxurious sauce. Packed with flavour, we were off to a fantastic start. Across the table, my partner tucked into homemade chicken liver pâté. The savoury flavours were wonderfully offset by a sweet red onion marmalade and a peppery rocket salad, creating a lovely balance and of tastes and textures. As a lover of pizza, meat and anything

spicy, pizza diavola was an easy choice for my companion. All pizzas at Roccos are handmade and stone-baked, using only bianco mozzarella cheese and the best Italian plum tomatoes; quality ingredients for premium pizza. With just the right amount of heat, a side order of crisp fries and – in keeping with the Italian theme – a cold pint of Birra Moretti, my partner readily finished every last bite. While the pizza surpassed our expectations, the real star of the show – perhaps I’m biased here – was my sea bass and risotto main. Two beautifully crisped fillets arrived on a bed of tomato and courgette risotto, finished with a drizzle of sweet balsamic glaze. Alison says this is one of their most popular dishes and it’s easy to see why. The combination of textures – from the crisp skin of the succulent fish to the perfectly cooked risotto – meant every mouthful was relished. For dessert, Roccos offers an impressive array of sweet options, which is a refreshing alternative to the typical sorbets, ice creams and tiramisu often found in Italian restaurants. In search of something extra-sweet to round off the evening, my partner’s salted caramel and chocolate tart with a butterscotch toffee sauce really hit the spot. Full up from the generous main portion, I opted for the simple-but-delicious affogato a la Roccos – crema ice cream, drowned in espresso and Kahlua – which is testament that simplicity is often king when it comes to food. The food here is rustic and simple, with the emphasis on the ingredients, but most importantly, they stay true to their philosophy, La gioia della cucina, (or the joy of cooking) which shines through in each of their carefully prepared dishes.

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 90% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 75% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees
