he true story of the Calendar Girls launched a global phenomenon: a million copycat calendars, a record-breaking movie, now celebrating 20 years since its release, the fastest-selling stage play in British theatre history, and now a musical written by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth, which coined the term “craughing” - the act of crying and laughing at the same time! Tim Firth’s involvement with Calendar Girls began with the original movie 20 years ago and along with his writing partner of the musical, Gary Barlow, has reworked this new production ahead of an extensive UK tour. Tim tells us a little about the new musical and the inspiration behind its reimagining.

T

*** There was something in the heart of lockdown that was all about time; about suddenly being dumped with a container load of it, about managing that, not resenting it, realising you were lucky to have it and not to waste it, if you were well enough to enjoy it. Of course, it’s only looking back that we can get that kind of perspective. For the pair of us it just presented as an inexplicable urge to DO stuff; to write, to plot new work and to re-examine work that already existed. This led us to new projects such as the one man show A Different Stage, and it also turned our heads back towards Calendar Girls the Musical. Now, by this time it was a good few years since we had written the show and there was justifiable trepidation in returning to the project. After all it had been in the West End, done a national tour and was due to be performed by many companies around the UK if and when lockdown finished. However, that UK was going to have changed. The world had. It was a time of global reboot. The planet had been attacked by a unilateral force in a way that had never really happened before and the indiscriminate nature of that assault had done something fundamental to our perception of boundaries. Or borders. Of

sticking to parameters that already existed. A strange sense of liberation came out of the confinement that meant we thought - whatever you’re thinking, just try it. Take the chance. Have a fresh look. Take the jump. Maybe we’ll never get that sense of empowerment again. It was like the bravery you have when starting out as a kid and feel you have nothing to lose. That was it; the spirit we momentarily regained meant we re-wrote like we had nothing to lose. In a sense we were led by the words of Dare, one of the songs in the show; something about taking a jump without the fear meaning you stand a better chance of making a landing on the other side. Well, this is where we landed, relieved it was all still intact, grateful to have a producer willing to mount it and excited

at the prospect of reimagining the staging and the sound of a now-familiar story. During previews our agent Alan texted, having noticed it was 15 years since the first night of the stage version of Calendar Girls. I said I can’t believe all these years later we’re still here rewriting it. But to be honest it’s a privilege that we are, and that the story is so unique in that regard. The film is 20 years old this year, the real girls more than 20 years older but their story, like their sunflowers, seems to keep reseeding of its own accord; and when it does, the flower is always, always the same. It’s only the shape that changes. Calendar Girls the Musical is currently touring with cast that includes recent stars from Coronation Street and EastEnders (Amy Robbins and Tanya Franks), three recording stars whose hit records have approached nearly 70 million in sales (Lyn Paul with The New Seekers, Maureen Nolan with The Nolans and musical theatre star Marti Webb), the co-star of one of TV’s most popular series of the last 20 years (Honeysuckle Weeks of Foyles War), and Paula Tappenden star of Blood Brothers. It lands at Leeds Grand Theatre from 7-11 November.Visit leedsheritagetheatres.com to find out more. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 21

A tale as old as time HELP BREAK THE SPELL AT WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE THIS CHRISTMAS. magical new Christmas visitor experience is set to sprinkle an enchanted spell over Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham’s Grade I listed stately home. A Tale As Old As Time takes up the story after a fairytale spell has been cast on the House and its inhabitants. The family festive event, which runs from Tuesday 28 November through to Sunday 7 January, is being created and staged entirely by Wentworth Woodhouse staff and their army of dedicated volunteers. A ‘Christmas crew’ is hand-building props and scenery, producing haunting soundscapes and bringing foliage, twisting branches and abandoned elements from the Mansion’s Gardens to transform the corridors and State Rooms into scenes akin to Sleeping Beauty’s castle. In addition, from dusk ‘til 9pm, the West Front Gardens beyond will be the scene of a half-kilometre outdoor Light Trail, with illuminated woodland grottos and pathways. The Christmas spectacular is a nod to the history of the mansion - from its lavish Christmas parties thrown by the

Marquesses of Rockingham and the Earls Fitzwilliam, its slide into decline in the 20th century to its new life, thanks to a careful and creative multi-millionpound regeneration by the Preservation Trust who took ownership in 2017. Visitors can explore at their leisure and are tasked with finding a hidden trail of camellias which can break the spell cast on the House and restore life and laughter. The Mansion is renowned for the camellia collection - one of the oldest in the western world - in its recently-restored garden Camellia House. They will enter via the 18th century Oak Staircase and State Corridor, both overgrown with greenery, to find a glowing fire and regal throne in the Whistlejacket Room, a sparkling champagne fountain in the Van Dyck Room and a dark and spooky forest in its Ante Room. A ballroom scene brings memories of the past to the majestic Marble Saloon and the experience concludes in the State Dining Room, where a giant banquet echoes the nights when a young Princess Victoria, then King George and

Queen Mary, were entertained. The Light Trail, which runs most evenings from Tuesday 28 November until Sunday 7 January, will feature fairy lights galore, mirror balls in unexpected places and swirling ‘carpets’ of light. There are fairy doors and woodland creatures to seek and find and a spectacular light tunnel finale. The Mansion’s baroque West Front facade will be beautifully lit throughout the Christmas period and a festive steam train will be running on its lawns and rear drive. A Festive Afternoon Tea themed around the event will be held in the Long Gallery and Christmas fayre is available in the Butler’s Pantry Café and food village on the West Front Lawns. A Tale As Old As Time tickets cost £15 for adults, £4 for 3-16s (under twos free). Family tickets (2 adults & 2 children) £30. WHAT’S GOING ON?

PARTY SEASON IS IMMINENT FOR JORDAN ODU. ith Christmas on the horizon,

W it’s that time of year to bring

out the winter wardrobe and embrace all the upcoming festivities. It’s been a whirlwind few weeks with a string of amazing events, gigs, and one of my favourites, Bonfire night. When I found out all the big bonfires in Leeds were cancelled again, I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit gutted. The memories of all the amazing firework displays at Roundhay Park take me straight back to my childhood, but that is no more. Thankfully, my go-to local, The Mustard Pot, saved the day. They’ve brought it this year with pie, peas, and lit up the night sky with all the bangs. Their latest menu is also a winner, and jam-packed with hearty, homely winter warmers that I’ll be working my way through in the coming months, especially when the festive teepee makes a comeback this month. The addition of Jodie Bakes cakes has been welcomed with open arms too, allowing me to leave with a sweet treat to enjoy at home. Is it me, or do the festivities start earlier each year?, not that I’m complaining. Party season is imminent, but who’s going to argue with that when there’s so many events to attend and Christmas menus to indulge in. One place that never fails to deliver is Harvey Nichols. Their festive menu is brimming with temptation, with the Blue Cheese Mousse with pear and walnut, and Roasted Beef Fillet with truffle jus high up on my hit list already. They’re also bringing back the bottomless Champagne dinner this year, so it’s safe to say that I’ll be dropping in a few times as we edge closer to the big day. Speaking of December, the 25th, you might also want to add one of Harvey Nichols signature hampers to your list this year. They’ve really outdone themselves this time around. And it’s the Crowd Pleaser Hamper for me if anyone out there is stuck for my present. 32 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards 2023

One event that always stands out on the Yorkshire social calendar is the Children of Courage Awards and this year was no exception. It’s an honour to be an ambassador and for team PGHL to organise this year’s awards celebrating the incredible work they do. One of the most heartwarming moments of the evening was seeing Rob Burrow’s children take to the stage to pick up their award. A truly inspirational night, raising a record-breaking £76,000. Next year's event is already being planned, so look out for how you can attend or get involved with helping out. Of course, it’s almost impossible to get through the working week during party season without caffeine and coffee just got a whole lot more exciting in central Leeds. The brilliant SALT Beer Factory on East Parade has teamed up with Hubb Coffee Bar to deliver smooth and velvety nitro cold brew coffee to customers looking for their daily pick-me-up. On top of this, guests will also be able to indulge in a variety of calorific baked

goods, thick-cut premium sandwiches and of course, SALT’s impressive collection of craft beers and on-tap cocktails. It’s set to take the craft and coffee scene by storm. Ending this month on a somewhat boujee note, if you happen to like the finer things in life, then you really don’t want to sleep on the new Sunday menu from HOME. Imagine the classic Sunday roast upgraded and looking like a piece of art, then you’re on the right track. My personal highlight was the 'Yorkshire Moors' Yorkshire Pudding with Caramelized Onion, Horseradish and Sunday Gravy, taking my yorkie obsession to another level. I have to say it’s the best roast I’ve had in a longtime, with the menu changing weekly including delicious dishes such as Yorkshire Beef, Glazed Slow Cooked Carrot, Smoked Potato and Bone Marrow Crumb, it really is one you need to try. That’s me for this month, so wrap up, take care and I hope to see you in the city soon.

his month, Flying Scotsman, the most famous steam locomotive in the world, will be returning to its birthplace of Doncaster as part of special centenary celebrations. Thousands of visitors will get the opportunity to see Flying Scotsman up close, take photos and marvel at the magnificent feat of engineering. This all happens on the weekend of Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November. “It has always been our ambition to bring Flying Scotsman home to Doncaster as we will always be associated with this iconic locomotive,” said Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones. “I am delighted that we are giving our residents, along with visitors from far and wide, the chance to see Flying Scotsman as part of a special centenary event. We are a city that has a proud rail heritage, but we are also a city that looks to the future, and we have forged strong partnerships in the transport sector to build on regeneration and growth across Doncaster.

T

“This event will also be poignant as it takes place over Remembrance weekend. It will be a time to reflect and give thanks for the sacrifices made by servicemen and women who worked in the rail sector and commemorate their most significant contribution.” The centenary celebrations actually started 12 months ago with a special launch event at Kings Cross. The engine has then spent the year touring the country and after a short stay at York’s National Railway Museum for half-term in October, it heads to Doncaster before finishing up at Locomotion Shildon for Christmas and the New Year. The celebrations culminate at Edinburgh’s Waverley station. Flying Scotsman was built in Doncaster and was the first locomotive of the newly-formed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). Designed by renowned railway engineer Sir Nigel Gresley, it went into service on 24 February 1923 as part of the A1 class— the most powerful locomotives used by

the LNER at that time. By 1924, when it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition in London, the loco had been given the name ‘Flying Scotsman’ after the daily 10.00 London to Edinburgh rail service which started in 1862. The British Empire Exhibition made Flying Scotsman famous, and it went on to feature in many more publicity events for the LNER. In 1928, it was given a new type of tender with a corridor, which meant that a new crew could take over without stopping the train. This allowed it to haul the first ever non-stop London to Edinburgh service on 1 May that year, reducing the journey time to eight hours. In 1934, Scotsman was clocked at 100mph on a special test run – officially the first locomotive in the UK to reach that speed. The test run proved to the LNER’s directors that steam power could provide high speeds, negating a plan for the company to use diesel power on its high-speed services.

Flying Scotsman remained in service until 1963 before being bought by Doncaster-based Alan Pegler, who completely overhauled the locomotive. He had grand plans to take the loco around the world and in 1969 headed to the United States on a tour intended to promote British exports. The tour broke even in its first year, but the second lost money. In a bid to balance the books, Pegler arranged for the train to travel to San Francisco. The trip worked well operationally but was a financial disaster. Alan Pegler was forced into bankruptcy and Scotsman was stranded in the USA. However, in 1973 Flying Scotsman was brought back to the UK after William McAlpine heard about the situation in the USA. He promptly put together a rescue plan, paying off the creditors and buying the locomotive. McAlpine had the engine restored at Derby Works and kept it running for 23 years in his ownership, extensively overhauling it twice. He even took Flying Scotsman to Australia, making it the first steam locomotive to circumnavigate the globe on its voyage there and back. While in Australia in 1989 it also set a new record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive at 422 miles. Following the successful tour of Australia, Flying Scotsman ran special trains around Britain, including regular runs over the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway and trips hauling the prestigious Orient Express Pullman train. The locomotive was repaired again in the early 1990s, at which time pop impresario Pete Waterman formed a short-lived partnership with Sir William to run the locomotive. In February 1996 businessman Tony Marchington bought Scotsman outright for £1.25million. In 2004, Flying Scotsman hit the headlines again with yet another crisis over its ownership. A campaign spearheaded by the National Railway Museum to save the

locomotive for the nation amassed the support of thousands, confirming its status as a national treasure. The appeal to keep the steam icon in Britain was supported by a £1.8million grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the generosity of the public. Its restoration was also completed with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £275,000. From 2006, Flying Scotsman underwent an extensive restoration in the workshop of Riley & Son (E) Ltd. In 2016 the painstaking £4.2million project to bring the legend back to life was completed. The next chapter in the Flying Scotsman story was its triumphant return as a working museum exhibit, conquering yet another record as the oldest mainline working locomotive on Britain’s tracks. It is now one of the jewels in the crown of York’s National Railway Museum’s world-class collection. “To me, it’s more than just a railway engine,” said Anthony Coulls, senior curator at National Railway Museum York. “Flying Scotsman is up there with the London bus, the London taxi and the

Spitfire. In October 2015 the old Vulcan bomber flew for the last time. In February 2016, Flying Scotsman started running again and, for me, took up the mantle for engineering and transport engines on the move.” Anthony is particularly enthused about the engine’s return to its birthplace and encourages visitors to take advantage of this rare opportunity to see Flying Scotsman up close and personal. “It’s going to be a real occasion, and I don’t mean that in any idle sense,” he said. “To have the Flying Scotsman back in the town where it was made, but in live steam with a fire inside it and the ability feel the warmth of the thing, the smell of it, is really exciting. “Hopefully it introduces a new generation the excitement of the railway, not just steam railway. We’re not just about celebrating the past, we look to the future too. It was the sign of the future 100 years ago and it inspired people then, who says it can’t do it today?” Flying Scotsman will be based at Freightliner, Decoy Bank South, Doncaster on 11 and 12 November.

Cinematic odyssey LEEDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE CITY FROM 3-19 NOVEMBER AND IS THE BIGGEST TO DATE. RICHARD ABBEY SPOKE TO DIRECTOR CHRIS FELL TO FIND OUT MORE.

f you thought film festivals were restricted to key cities like Cannes, New York and London, you’d be mistaken. In the UK alone there are over 30 film-related festivals, the majority of which take place outside the capital city. You’ll find festivals focusing on short films, documentaries, animation, comedy… the list goes on. Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) is the largest film event of its kind in the North and covers a lot of everything – feature films, short films, animation and more. This year it is even bigger, running over 17 days between 3 and 19 November. The festival was started in 1987 by a group of passionate volunteers before being taken under the wing of Leeds City Council who have helped it to grow and evolve over the years. Over the course of the festival, LIFF will screen over 240 films in venues including the Vue and Everyman cinemas in the city centre, Cottage Road Cinema in Headingley, and the recently re-opened Hyde Park Picture House. “It’s a fantastic place and they’ve done a fantastic job with it,” said festival director Chris Fell of Hyde Park Picture

I

House. “They’ve kept a lot of the original features, inside and outside, and they’ve added a second screen which is fantastic for us. “We’ve decided to have our opening film there, which is Poor Things, to celebrate their opening. Having Poor Things as our opening film is a real coup, it won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival and it’s got fantastic reviews. We’re thrilled to be opening with it.” Closing the festival will be a lowbudget Lithuanian film called Slow, which hasn’t got any UK distribution so will present UK audiences with a rare opportunity to see the film on the big screen. “There’s so many films that get missed by audiences each year,” said Chris. “We keep trying to help that change. Sometimes a film we show will get bought by a UK distributor and circulated or sometimes films we show get toured, either by us or other organisations. “For me, it’s all about sharing with audiences films that they may not otherwise get to see. We do previews of big films but most of the films we show and support are under the radar and we

think, as a team, they deserve to be seen.” Chris has been director of Leeds International Film Festival since 1999 and, like the huge team of staff and volunteers that support him, is hugely passionate about film, although he was something of a late starter. “I started volunteering in a small cinema in Bradford in the 1990s as an usher,” he recalled. “Some of the films I watched were by Krzysztof Kie lowski, who made the Three Colours Trilogy, I’d never seen films like that before. It made me realise that there’s a whole other world of film.” LIFF received in excess of 5,000 submissions for this year’s festival, which came from 120 countries. The final shortlist spans six programme sections to include: Official selection - previews about the most talked about films coming up as well as previews about new discoveries; Cinema Versa – documentaries; Fanomenon – horror/scifi/action/cult films/animation; Thrill Rides - thrillers set on trains or at train

42 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

stations; Cinema Amour – It’s all about cinephilia, about film-goers’ love of cinema and of films; and Rear View - a big-screen collection of 4K restorations of rarely-screened archive films. LIFF SHORTS is the new name for the programme section dedicated to short films. This opens on 8 November with the Yorkshire Short Film Competition and from 9 to 11 November, the festival presents six more short film competitions including the Academy Award®qualifying Louis le Prince International Short Film Competition – named after the Leeds pioneer who made the world’s first moving images in 1888 – and the World Animation Competition. LIFF SHORTS 2023 also includes the British Short Film Competition, and competitions for screendance, queer shorts, and music videos. LIFF SHORTS 2023 closes with the awards event at Howard Assembly Room when the winners will be screened and announced as judged by the juries. Over the years, LIFF has given filmmakers a real platform, particularly

in the short film category. As an Oscarqualifying festival, its submissions can be considered for nomination. “Being selected for the festival can be a real boost,” added Chris. “It doesn’t mean automatic nomination for the Oscars but it means they’re shortlisted for nomination, that’s partly why we get so many submissions.” Running alongside LIFF are two spinoff festivals - Leeds Young Film Festival (LYFF) and the INDIs. The former used to be part of the main festival but became its own entity and occurs every Easter. The INDIs are aimed at 16-25year-olds and runs every February. “The idea is that audiences discover independent film through the Leeds Young Film Festival and then when they’re older, they may decide to make a film and submit that to the INDIs,” explained Chris. “When when they’re a bit older they may submit to LIFF or even attend and buy a pass. It’s a generational cycle and we’re helping people to stay rooted in Leeds.” Leeds International Film Festival

remains firmly rooted in the city and Chris is keen to extend its reach within Leeds and beyond. They recently received three years’ funding from the British Film Institute (BFI) for audience development. “We’ll be going to parts of Leeds we haven’t reached before, which I’d say are mainly south and east Leeds, a lot of our audiences come from north and west Leeds,” said Chris. “A lot of the next three years is about going out into those communities and working with local partners and hopefully bring audiences from those areas. “We also do want more national recognition for the festival, it’s a fantastic programme and the team do an amazing job. We want more people from around the UK to come to the festival as well as those in Yorkshire. People don’t need to go to London for the film festivals, or other capital cities, they can come to Leeds and see films too.” For further information, and for ticket details, visit www.leedsfilm.com

Get your glad rags on PARTY TIME IS HERE! SAYS FASHPACKSTYLE. here are so many events at this time of year, carol concerts, work parties, drinks with the girls, date nights with your love... Add onto that the expense of actually attending these events, buying presents for loved ones and hosting at your home and the old purse strings start to buckle. Time to call out the big guns and invest in items that will work hard in your wardrobe all year round not just one-time winter wonders. Here’s a handy list of FASHPACK FESTIVE FAVOURITES to get your started:

T

An evening coat: You don’t want to show up to an event in a show-stopping sequin dress with your work coat on over the top. Invest in a slightly oversized shoulder, full length coat (so you can drape it over yours rather than put your arms through). It will be a wardrobe workhorse. A great tuxedo suit: ME&EM do an amazing great quality tuxedo suit every season. I promise it will become a cornerstone of all of your festive looks worn together or as separates. A hero top: In whatever style, fabric or finish makes your heart sing. I personally like something long-sleeved at this time of year but that doesn’t have to mean frumpy, look for sheer details, cut-outs or off the shoulder options. A silk slip dress: A silk slip dress is your

wardrobe’s secret weapon to looking good at any event. It can be dressed up with heels, a tux jacket and some jewellery or dressed down with a knit over the top and some knee boots. Trust me, this is the only dress you really need to buy this season.

Evening bag: I love a clutch bag that

squishes in your hand, it looks more carefree and less prim. I always go for bold when it comes to accessories as you can dress up even the most minimal of looks this way. Reiss has two great rhinestone options in store that I always recommend to clients. Accessories: Go big

with accessories, this is where you can spend minimal cash but maximise impact. If you do want to go for a showstopping look this festive season, rent rather than buy. It’s a sustainable way to push the fashion boundaries without pushing the limit of your credit card.

Heels: Go for heels without ankle straps,

FashPackStyle

they are more flattering on your legs and pick a heel height that you can walk in. Sounds crazy but I see so many women at this time of year struggling to walk in heels that are too high. Be confident and strut your stuff.

you may remember from your youth but are now warm, welcoming spaces where patients are put immediately at ease. Green Square Dental on Rotherham’s Moorgate is the perfect example of a modern surgery and is warm and welcoming and has recently been enhanced by a recent refurbishment. They worked with Samantha Waterhouse Interiors to create a new design and the waiting room now offers a luxurious, boutique styled lounge which includes a new refreshments bar, serving speciality coffee, teas and chilled water. Using the colours from the interior design, Green Square Dental rebranded their logo and signage to match. Green Square Dental and Implant Centre, to give it its full title, opened in 2016 and from the very beginning had the intention of ensuring that they cared for their patients as if they were family. “Being a family-run business means that we truly care about each and every person that walks through our doors, said principal dental surgeon Duncan Park. “From the moment they are greeted by our friendly reception team, the experience begins.” The surgery provides private dentistry across Rotherham, Sheffield and surrounding areas, including Doncaster, Barnsley, Worksop and Retford. Whether you require a general checkup appointment or you are interested in restoring or improving your smile with a range of cosmetic dentistry or dental implants, their highly trained and caring private dental team will listen to your requirements and discuss all possible treatment options. “By seeing you and your family on a regular basis, we can keep a close eye on your precious teeth and make sure any potential problems are spotted as early as possible,” added Duncan. “This preventive approach helps to keep your dental health in great condition and can mean 50 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

If we do identify any issues, we offer a full range of treatments to restore your teeth and keep them healthy.” You may consider having some type of cosmetic dentistry to straighten, lighten, reshape or repair teeth. Which treatment option you have will depend on your teeth and what you would like to change. Green Square Dental’s cosmetic treatments include a comprehensive consultation to fully explain all of your treatment options. This allows you to make an informed decision about how to take the next step towards your perfect smile.

The surgery also specialises in dental implants, which are used as a permanent solution to replace missing teeth, to enhance your smile and boost your confidence, improve your facial shape, improve speaking and chewing ability, and to avoid denture-related issues such as messy adhesives, gum irritation or movement. From the great location to the comfortable waiting area, ample free parking, late night and Saturday opening and an attentive team, everything at Green Square Dental has been designed with you in mind.

ABOUT OSTEOPOROSIS & OSTEOPENIA Primary osteoporosis is caused by low bone density and is the most common bone disease in the world affecting an estimated 500 million people worldwide. Low bone density causes holes inside the bone to widen and the outer walls of the bone to thin which weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. A healthy and strong bone and skeletal system is crucial to: • Support the body • Protect vital organs of the body • Help the body move • Make blood cells Osteoporosis can develop slowly over years and is often called a silent disease with symptoms often only manifesting when bone density becomes low enough to cause: • Back pain (caused by spinal fractures which can occur even without a fall or knock) • Fractures in hips, wrists or other bones • Changes to posture - hunched or stooped The precursor to osteoporosis is called “osteopenia” which is defined by a lower than normal bone density. Thankfully, osteopenia can often be halted in its tracks if diagnosed with a DEXA bone density scan and with appropriate advice on diet, physical activity and other treatment options. It is certainly not a given that those with osteopenia will go on to develop osteoporosis! How do Bone Density (DEXA) scans help diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis? Bone Density (or “DEXA”) scans are quick, painless and non invasive scans which give information about the density (strength) of bones which can be used to diagnose osteopenia, osteoporosis, or secondary osteoporosis or to estimate the risk of future bone fracture. They can also help determine if a patient’s current treatment for managing bone conditions is effective. The DEXA scan gives a “T-score” which compares a person’s bone density with that of healthy adults at the normal peak of physical development. WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER HAVING A BONE DENSITY SCAN? Bones are made of living tissue. Healthy people build up more bone than is lost. However after age of 40, bones may begin to break down faster than they form and this is when diet, exercise and other factors can really influence a person’s bone health into their middle and older age. There is an argument to consider having a bone density scan from the age of 40 upwards so that a person’s “baseline” bone density can be measured and subsequent scans can then show more accurately if bone density is decreasing and can make necessary changes to diet, lifestyle and physical activity in time to slow down or even prevent the onset of osteopenia and osteoporosis.

info@dexastrong.co.uk www.dexastrong.co.uk

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM HAVING A BONE DENSITY SCAN? • Those with a family history of osteoporosis • Women going through peri-menopause or early menopause Oestrogen levels fall very quickly and significantly for women during the period which is called the perimenopause, and this can often be a period of several years around the menopause (“Menopause” as defined by doctors as a point when you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months). Oestrogen is important in maintaining bone production and strength and with the loss of oestrogen, bones become weaker and less dense, significantly increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Having a bone density scan and fracture risk assessment will give women a better understanding of their future risk, and the chance to discuss diet/lifestyle or other interventions with a healthcare professional in order to protect against developing osteoporosis. • Anyone who has had a fracture caused by a fall from a standing height or less In addition, many other groups can be at risk of developing “secondary osteoporosis” (osteoporosis caused by medical conditions or medications) may benefit from bone density scans • People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Coeliac, malabsorption issues Conditions which cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract can disrupt the removal of old bone and formation of new bone, which can lead to Osteoporosis, along with reduced absorption of calcium and vitamin D which can also reduce bone density. • People taking corticosteroids Steroid medications can cause bone to break down faster than it is made and affect absorption levels of calcium, reducing bone density. • People with diabetes Diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, can be associated with osteoporosis and significantly increased risk of fracture. • Those with hyperthyroidism/hyperparathyroidism Over-production of the parathyroid hormone takes too much calcium out of the bones, reducing bone density • People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) Damaged kidneys are less able to balance mineral and hormone levels in the body properly, which can cause mineral and bone disorders • People with eating disorders Poor intake of calcium and vitamin D3, together with decreased oestrogen and testosterone levels in those suffering with eating disorders can reduce bone density. • Patients being treated for breast or prostate cancer Some treatments for breast and prostate cancer, such as chemotherapy and hormone therapy, can cause bone loss.

Dear doctor... Turn back time

Dr Afroze Abbas PhD FRCP FHEA runs private out-patient clinics in endocrinology, osteoporosis and bone health at the new DEXAStrong Muscle and Bone Health Clinic in Leeds.

I have heard that Vitamin D is key to keeping my bones and muscles healthy. How does it work? Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” and is vital for maintaining strong and healthy bones and muscles. Taking proactive steps such as maintaining your vitamin D intake will help contribute to your overall well-being and enable you to live an active and fulfilling life. This is especially important as we move into Winter. Boosts Calcium Absorption: Vitamin D works with calcium to strengthen your bones – it helps your body absorb calcium from the food you eat, ensuring you have enough for building and maintaining your bones. Insufficient vitamin D can lead to weaker bones and a higher risk of fractures. Maintains Bone Balance: Vitamin D plays a key role in bone remodelling, where old bone tissue is replaced with new bone. It helps maintain a healthy balance between bone-building cells (osteoblasts) and bonebreaking cells (osteoclasts). This balance is crucial for strong bones and reducing the risk of conditions like osteoporosis. Supports Muscles and Balance: Vitamin D also supports your muscles, balance and stablility. Strong muscles help support your skeleton and lower the risk of falls and fractures. Getting Enough Vitamin D: While safe sunlight exposure is the primary source, getting adequate vitamin D can be challenging. Foods like fatty fish, fortified dairy products, egg yolks, and certain mushrooms are good sources. Vitamin D supplements (400-1000 units daily) are widely available and should be considered, especially in the winter months when there is less chance of sunshine exposure. DEXAStrong

CLARE CAROLL TALKS ABOUT PLASMABLAST SKIN TIGHTENING, THE BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTIC SURGERY. PLASMABLAST IS A 100 PER CENT NATURAL, NON-INVASIVE AESTHETIC TREATMENT DESIGNED TO SHRINK THE SKIN. lasmablast skin tightening is a 100 per cent natural skin treatment which gives you a brighter, smoother, contoured and youthful appearance. The treatment shrinks sagging skin, reduces lines and dramatically reduces deep wrinkles or completely takes them away. Plasmablast works on natural healing and you will see results at six weeks plus – don’t forget it has taken years to grow your loose skin so it needs a bit of time to shrink it back. This treatment allows Clare to remove excess skin in a non-surgical, minimally invasive manner. Over the last four years, Clare has refined her approach to treating clients that want to look younger or fresher without the obvious frozen, stretched or plumped faces often seen now in day to day life. All clients who undergo Clare’s signature Plasmablast facelift report that they look and feel refreshed and more importantly they keep their true facial expressions. Clare’s approach focuses on the following key areas:

P

• Facelift • Crepey Skin • Overhanging eyelids • Bags under eyes • Crows feet • Cheek enhancement • Sagging Jawline • Smokers lips • Smoother neck • Skin texture improvement • Lines and wrinkle reduction The treatment works by using a specialised device which delivers a nitrogen based gas which changes in the air just above the skin causing an arc which zaps the skin. This process damages the epidermis many times causing the body’s natural defence technique to go into overdrive, fibroblasts in the dermis kick in and produce brand new collagen, thus encouraging fresh new skin cells and restoring the elastin giving a bouncier texture. To see many before and after pictures look on Facebook –Plasmablast Skin Tightening by Clare Carroll – or Instagram – plasmablastclare. Plasmablast is predominantly for the over 40s who have loose, wrinkly skin but can also minimise acne scarring in younger clients. Plasmablast treatments are priced from £250 up to £900. Clare will give free consultations via FaceTime video chats or at her brand new skin clinic in Selby. It will include skin analysis, assessing the texture of your face and what she can do for you. Call Clare on 07976 971501. Clare can also visit salons in Bingley, Leeds,York and Selby or at your home address, travel expenses will be added.

Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. School principal, Lynne Walker, said: “Martin House is a wonderful place providing much needed support for families with children who have life limiting, life threatening and terminal illnesses, and we are proud to have donated over £62,000 to date. “The charity is very close to our hearts, no parent wants their child to be in a position to need hospice care, but Martin House provides a loving and positive support system thanks to donations like ours”. Duncan Brownnutt added: “Scala School for Performing Arts is a valued friend of Martin House, and we are so grateful for their continued support and commitment to us. The money they have raised will help us to continue providing specialist care to seriously ill babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions.”

Innovative rural women Stories of innovative diversification and inspiring accounts of rural careers have been shared at a sold-out Autumn Gathering of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Women In Farming Network. The milestone 10th autumn get-together of this thriving network of women who live and work in the countryside brought together 130 delegates at Pavilions of Harrogate on the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate in October. Held in the spirit of celebration, inspiration and friendship, the Autumn Gathering is the Women In Farming Network’s flagship annual event and was sponsored by Barclays Agriculture, Savills and Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors. 74 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Celebrating five years of Doncaster’s Festival of Light The Doncaster Festival of Light is back for 2023, banishing the autumn gloom with ten days of great community art to banish the November darkness. Returning for its fifth year, the Festival of Light has become a much-loved fixture in the city’s calendar and is presented by Right Up Our Street, the Arts Council-funded Community Arts Project that has forged a network of people across the borough creating and being a part of brilliant art and culture. Running from 24 November to 3 December, this year’s festival will showcase three major artworks from Universal Everything, the collective of architects, engineers, designers, cinematographers, animators, musicians and developers who specialise in creating new forms of moving image, interaction and immersive space. Once again, the heart of the Festival, which is free to attend, will be Doncaster Minster, where Universal Everything will stage all three pieces. Transfiguration explores what evolution looks like and depicts a figure that transforms in front of the viewer’s eyes. Future You is a digital mirror that presents a synthetic version of the viewer, an interactive artwork only comes to life when it is activated by someone in front of it. Into the Sun is another interactive piece which responds to the movement of the viewer. In addition to the main exhibits, on the opening weekend only there will be additional artworks to explore in the Minster grounds. The Festival runs from 6.30pm to 9pm on the opening night and from 5pm to 9pm all other evenings. Although the Festival of Light is free to attend, to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees, tickets must be booked online in advance. Visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/right-up-our-street

Getting people moving A brand new Toolkit is being launched aimed at dancers, care home staff, public health professionals, health and social care practitioners, and anyone who has an interest in the power of movement to give our ageing population more years better lived. Over the past seven years, a group of collaborating organisations in Yorkshire have developed a pioneering approach to keeping older people active that is proven to improve mobility, social connection, balance and mood, and reduces fear of falling. Led by darts, One Dance UK, the University of Leeds and Yorkshire Dance, Dance On has proved to be a highly successful model, enhancing the lives of hundreds of older adults – many of whom who were previously deemed ‘inactive’. The programme encourages regular physical activity for maintaining fitness and activity levels in a more subtle way than traditional physical activity programmes. Evidence showed that many attend for social opportunities and noted improvements to their mental as well as physical health through social interaction. From sourcing the right venue to choosing motivating music, from developing community ambassadors to writing risk assessments, this Toolkit provides bite sized ideas, case studies and templates for anyone looking to develop their own dance programme for older people, or for dancers or care staff to improve their practice.

Tommy soldiers Yorkshire-based manufacturer ACS Stainless Steel Fixings is supporting local communities across the country by creating free of charge Silhouette Soldiers this Remembrance Day. The initiative sees Leeds-based ACS create steel structures of Tommy soldiers, which are then distributed to communities across the country where they will be displayed for Remembrance Sunday services and events. This year, in a bid to raise more awareness and funds for the Armed Forces, the company has drafted in two new partners; Leeds Rhinos whose players will loan their support to the campaign, as well as the ABF The Soldiers Charity who will be this year’s beneficiary. ACS has also drafted in the support of DX (Group) PLC, with the parcel carrier kindly delivering 250 of the steel soldiers across the country. It is the third year in which ACS has donated its time and resources to the cause; last year, apprentices in the Leedsbased factory created over 670 soldier silhouettes, raising £2,720 for the Royal British Legion. The new campaign is now open, with ACS inviting businesses and individuals across Yorkshire and beyond to place an order. Wonder wall FORGET WALL-TO-WALL CARPET AND PLAIN PAINTED WALLS, IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO ADD SOME REAL CHARACTER TO THE LIVING ROOM, THEN TILES ARE THE PERFECT SOLUTION. he range of options available to homeowners is now vast, so it’s vital to choose a reliable supplier with not only the range of products, but the experience and knowledge to offer the right advice. The Tile Company is a family business with more than 30 years’ experience – with six showrooms across Yorkshire offering the finest natural stone, new generation porcelain stoneware tiles and luxury bathroom products. Here’s their choice of tiling for interior and exterior, that has rocketed to popularity recently.

T

Nebraska Ceramic Wall Tiles The most up-to-the-minute trend in interior design is wood panelling for walls. The use of thin wooden slats to cover walls serves a purely aesthetic function, but transmits the warmth and personality of the original material to the rooms. The collection is available in cypress, ash and oak tones. Moreover, it is an ideal complement to any other series, since it can be installed on an entire wall, or just a section of it to create baseboards, headboards or cosy nooks. Can also be used on bathroom, shower and kitchen walls. Available in 45cm x 120cm.

Porcelain stoneware that looks like wallpaper The wall covering, i.e. the technique of covering one or more walls with visually stunning decorations, is already widespread and adored. Moreover, the latest digital printing technologies have opened new possibilities for customisation and allow for the creation of genuine works of art.

78 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Once upon a time, wallpaper was the only thing that allowed one to “draw” on the wall, but today we can even find collections of eye-catching small or large tiles. Its advantage with respect to wallpaper is that it is more durable and offers more versatility on both walls and floors indoors and outdoors.

Floral-patterned walls and floors Right now, there’s an incredible

collection of expressive nature-inspired and floral patterns in large formats of 60 ×120 cm for walls and floors, or 30 x 60cm/40 x 120cm for walls. From wonderfully vintage with wild flowers, petals in a water-coloured effect, large tropical and palm leaves, botanical motifs, geometric patterns dense with colour, or delicate cherry-tree flowers and branches. To complete the look, there’s a range of solid-coloured backgrounds to experiment with colour and vegetation pairings. Find out more by calling 01904 415527 or visiting thetilecompany.co.uk
