Spring has sprung here at Design Tonic HQ, bringing a whole raft of new projects and exciting interior styles.

For me, one of the hottest trends right now is the crossover between how we homes.

Known in the trade as “resimercial”, it’s

hit of contemporary cool - and bring a new cosiness into our workplaces through plush fabrics, prints, patterns and greenery.

It’s a vibe we had high on our list when

and we channelled lots of other 2024 style choices too.

Slatted wood walls are bang on trend, their modern mid-century feel bringing a tactile, natural warmth that’s just as gorgeous at work as it is at home. And we worked an always-stylish monochrome palette as our base, pairing walls in a pale greige with plenty of black accents, a similar vision to the one we used for a recent (and fabulous!) home renovation in Roundhay, which came packed with custom-built playful extras for the kidsthink playrooms and beds featuring climbing walls, platforms and a slide!

But, while we love the punch of monochrome, we can’t resist the pull of colour. The new season is bringing plenty of citrussy tones, with Pantone’s Peach Fuzz leading the way. And the good news is these colours are easier to use than you might think. My top tip? Test the waters with accents in surprising tones, and try mixing a vibrant citrus with your favourite pastels for a colour pop that’s sure to lift your spaceand your mood - ready for Summer.

Back with a BANG

The Libertines return with their fourth studio album, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, out this month and will bet ouring later this year.

Opening the Album, ‘Run, Run Run’, quite a statement track, so at what point in the writing process did it appear?

Pete Doherty: I can remember that moment, we were in the studio at Margate and we realised pretty quickly that we didn’t have enough stuff that we’d written together. So then we had to start pulling out songs that we’d written for our side projects.

Carl had asked me if I had any, I said “Yeah, I’ve got a couple”, I asked him the same thing, and he said he’d also got a couple. So he played me his, and I played him mine, and ‘Run Run Run’ was either one of the ones that he was “saving” or I was saving… And he added a couple of lines to it! [Laughter]

Carl Barât: Oi, you cheeky sod! I was playing that on the road with my other solo bad, but we changed it all up.

Pete: First hearing it, I thought I wasn’t so sure about this. He’d played it to me acoustically, and these are some of the best lyrics he’s ever written, but, it didn’t get over as mumbled it. And then… I heard a demo of it and I could listen to all the lyrics, and it was a bit more upbeat. It was as if he didn’t want me to use it!

Carl: No, it was like that. It was literally like, “Go on. Turn out your pockets. What have you got? I know you’ve got songs. [Laughter]

So, the album is a combination of songs already in hand, amongst new ones added once you’ve all got to the recording studio?

Carl: I think we were writing for the album

the album.. As we gravitated together more in our day-to-day lives, the album became more a possibility and a reality.

We went to Jamaica and did a bit of writing and we got some beauties out there. I mean, if you were to tot up the value for writing those particular lines in the songs, you might have struggled to get them through management, but as it happened, it was necessary, spiritually, for us to go out there and do our thing.

By going to Jamaica, it sounds like it was more about focussing on re-gelling that songwriting creativity as a pair?

Pete: I don’t think so, I feel we’re both pretty creative anyway. We could just sit around and be creative all day, everyday. Still, when it comes to actually writing and crafting songs that are going to creep into people’s ears, brains, hearts, and souls, and get right down to the f**king toenails, then yeah, we did have to focus on that.

It’s this endless quest to see if we could write the perfect pop song. We’ve never been stationary, we know that some people love our songs but we still feel like we have yet to get the recognition we deserve.

Carl: We needed to go together again without any distractions.

Pete: We went to the ‘Fountain of Youth’. Carl: ‘We did. It didn’t work, did it? I came back looking older! [Laughs]

Was there any pressure from the label to get this album out on time?

Pete: There was no pressure from the label, but there was a little bit of pressure from ourselves.

Carl: I think we all want this album to be the best it can be. I want it to be great. And you’ll do everything you can to give it the birth into this world it deserves.

Is this new album the one you’re most proud of, seeing as you’re all - as Carl told the NME - “facing the same direction”?

Carl: Right now, I feel as proud as I did… I think I was too insecure to be proud of

personally, I feel prouder of this record than I have done with anything we’ve done yet. Pete, would you say you’re most proud of this new one?

Pete: First of all, I think these new songs have got a hell of a lot of competition. They’ve got to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with ‘Death On The Stairs’ and ‘Time for Heroes’ and all these songs, even though they are decades old.

He may have travelled the world but Nicolas Dixon has always gravitated back to Leeds. Now the city is providing a canvas for his abstract art. Richard Abbey spoke to the artist about music, football and the future.

There’s been a boom in public art in recent years, with many cities commissioning artists to add beauty and character to urban spaces. Leeds is no exception to this and eagleeyed amongst you might have noticed works added to the likes of Kirkgate Market, Trinity Shopping Centre and Millennium Square in recent years.

The man behind these colourful and abstract works of art is Nicolas Dixon, a Leeds born and bred artist who, by his own admission, is still relatively new to the game.

Nicolas’s first passion was music, particularly house music, and after studying at Leeds College of Music he became a DJ and producer, a role which took him to London, Ibiza, Thailand, Germany and further afield.

It is while living in Germany, with his then artist girlfriend, that he first picked up a sketchbook and began doodling, more as a way of relieving stress than anything else. He didn’t think anything of it at the time and it was years later - in 2010 - that he showed the sketchbook to an artist friend living in Birmingham who was blown away by what he saw.

Collaborating and hosting an exhibition, where the pair sold six out of 15 pieces, was all the inspiration Nicolas needed to make the transition from musician to artist, although the former has proved to be a big influence on his work.

Within in a year he’d painted a hotel in Ibiza (along with 15 other artists) and made a lot of contacts along the way, which ultimately led to further commissions in Antwerp, Sydney as well

as giving him a platform to work in his home city, something he is very passionate about.

His first commission in Leeds was Kirkgate Market (in 2016) and he later completed works at Trinity, Mint Warehouse and the Matt Healy X The Foundry restaurant. But his biggest claim to fame allies to his second biggest passion - Leeds United Football Club.

Nicolas created a tribute to the Argentinian manager who returned the football club to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years, Marcelo Bielsa. ‘Bielsa The Redeemer’ was commissioned by Aaron Lambert, owner of the Pet Lodge Superstore in Wortley and shows Bielsa in the pose of the Redeemer statue, which famously towers over Rio de Janeiro on Brazil.

“As soon as we knew we were going chance to combine my two passions, art and Leeds United,” said Nicolas. The mural went viral and made national newspapers in the UK, France, Spain, Argentina and Brazil and even made the New York Times. Goal magazine described it “one of the most famous murals in world football”.

he will be creating a mural for current player Liam Cooper, who will be having his testimonial at the club this year.

Nicolas has been described as a

can bring anything to life’. His abstract, somewhat surreal style is certainly different and is perfectly scalable, working on everything from feature walls to life-size sculptures. It is certainly bright, funky and psychedelic, much like the records he played in his career as a DJ.

“I was a child of the rave scene and work,” Nicolas said. “I prefer to do the larger stuff, it suits my style. In a bigger

area I can express myself in a bigger way.”

Whilst the large-scale murals might be his bread and butter, Nicolas isn’t averse to doing smaller works and stepped into

Nicolas was also employed by Disney to custom paint a BB8 droid to celebrate the release of the Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, a project which raised money for Great Ormond Street hospice.

also inadvertently led to one of his favourite pieces, called The Tardis.

“I was at a friend’s wedding [in Sydney] and I met some guys who owned a luxury lift company,” Nicolas explained. “I showed them my stuff and the asked my to go down to Melbourne, all expenses paid, to paint their HQ. They even took me to the grand prix!”

Closer to home, it was whilst operating a pop-up shop in Trinity in 2019 that Nicolas met Kim Shaylor, who went on to create Gone Rogue, a collective of over 50 artists whose work she represents and sells online. Nicolas was invited to join her roster and as well as providing a showcase for his portfolio of work, he’s been asked

to work on some of their collaborative projects both in London and Ibiza.

Nicolas also works very closely with a charity called Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, a collective of musicians, artists and volunteers who support under-privileged people all over the world.

“It’s changed my perspective on life, doing that kind of thing,” said Nicolas. “We’ve been to Tanzania, where we painted a home for orphaned street kids, and to Sierra Leone and maybe going to Uganda later this year. We’re also talking about

in the next two to three years.”

On Nicolas’s immediate radar is a commission for Leeds University which he

says will be the biggest thing he has ever done, then there’ll be an exhibition in his home city and one possibly in the capital in collaboration with Gone Rogue.

“My work is totally personal from my own hand and heart, it can mean different things to different people but that’s the beauty of it I think,” said Nicolas. “I’m fortunate that people love it and long may that continue.”

The Gatehouse is open from 7.30am-6pm Monday to Fridays and is where our youngest children (aged 2-3 years) begin their Gateways journey. Once they turn three, the children move into Littlegates which houses Pre-Reception, Reception and Year 1. In Prep and High School, the average class size is between 14-18 pupils, ensuring each child receives the individual attention they deserve. At GCSE, the average class size is currently 13 pupils and A Level it is 5, ensuring pupils are making progress and supported in their lessons as each child is known individually.

Limited 2 Art celebrates 20 years in business this year and has recently moved to B

y her own admission, the last 20 years have been full of ups and downs for gallery owner Ruth Stone. But there has been one constant throughout – her amazing customers.

Ruth is the proprietor of Limited 2 Art, a charming gallery in the heart of Retford, which sells limited edition prints, sculptures and original artwork by some of the country’s leading artists.

“The last 20 years has been like any journey in business and in life, full of ups and downs and challenges,” said Ruth. “As well as moving premises, we had a

The new gallery, on Bridgegate, Retford, is housed in a Grade II-listed, three-storey building and when opened fully will be the largest gallery of its kind in the UK. Just

Ruth took ownership of the building in February 2023, which turned out to be a momentous day for another reason as her husband’s daughter also gave birth to twins on that day. Does that make it a double or triple celebration?

As part of the new gallery setup there will be a dedicated viewing room, where customers can view their purchases in private, and in comfy cinema-style seating no less. There is also a dedicated framing

consultation room with a huge selection of frames and mounts to choose from.

Ruth initially worked in retail and fundraising before pursuing her passion for art and people. Limited 2 Art caters to lots of different genres and stocks mainly modern and contemporary pieces with works from over 120 different artists, including those that are established and those embarking on careers.

Two times winner of “Best-Selling UK Artist”, Kerry Darlington, remains hugely popular and she is joined on the roster by the likes of JJ Adams, Leigh Lambert, Mackenzie Thorpe and Romero Britto to name a few.

Limited 2 Art is also the largest stockist of Edge sculptures, a Shropshire-based company who produce emotionally affordable pieces. They are designed and sculpted by Matt Buckley and are

“We are here to bring the very best of contemporary art to people and provide a setting where customers can peruse at their leisure, enjoy a drink with us and

appreciate the wealth of talent that is exhibited in the gallery,” commented Ruth.

During lockdown, the gallery branched out into publishing artwork and chose artists Tracey Krupianka, Martin Reid and Sean Durkin to work with. They now print and distribute their work to other galleries around the country.

Limited 2 Art also has an in-house framer - Ruth’s husband Wayne - who as well as framing, looks after the publishing side of the business and delivers up and down the UK. He specialises in framing football shirts, although doesn’t have an allegiance to any particular team.

Plans for a special 20th anniversary celebration are underway and are likely to to coincide with the gallery’s original opening on 4 September 2004. In the meantime, Ruth is planning a number of events and exhibitions, details of which will appear on her website and social media platforms.

Crag House Farm is the home of Caring For Life, a Christian charity which started in 1987. It provides accommodation, support and friendship to the homeless and vulnerable, not just in the short term, but throughout their lives. his is a big year for Zara’s Restaurant in Tickhill, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in December.

TOwner Faruk Miah is looking forward and puts the venue’s success down to the loyalty of its staff, which is equalled by that of his customers. Zara’s has retained the same chef for the whole of that time who updates the menu every two to three years to keep things fresh.

Last year the restaurant introduced ‘Desi-style’ dishes to showcase more homestyle cooking to complement the already tempting selection of traditional and

Indian-inspired dishes.

It’s a formula that clearly works and keeps customers coming back – Faruk says that 80-90 per cent of his customers are returning regulars and they have become the hallmark of Zara’s longevity.

The restaurant has been no stranger to awards recognition in that quarter of a century and last year were voted ‘Best Out of Town Indian’ at our sister magazine, Westside’s, annual restaurant awards for the second year running.

We arrived early on a Friday evening were greeted by Faruk and his team who, as on previous visits, made us feel very

welcome. We’re by no means regulars but were afforded the same kind of service that customers have come to expect.

We started with papadums (99p), a pickle tray (£3.50) and draught Cobra beer (£5.40, pint) before making our choices from the extensive menu, which includes chef’s specialities and recommendations as well as tandoori and old favourite dishes.

We followed our crunchy papadums with shared starters of chicken tikka (£5.50) and lamb chops (£6.75), both of which had been cooked in a tandoor and had that become so familiar.

Main courses posed more of a challenge

and I was swayed on the recommendation of both Faruk and manager Abdul to try one of the new desi-style dishes which was intriguingly called ‘John’s Special’. The dish was created for one of Zara’s regular customers and became so popular with other customers that it was eventually added to the menu. Made with lamb, it was a rich, spicy curry with a hint of sharpness, which came courtesy of the addition of shatkora, a bitter citrus fruit from Bangladesh.

As it so happened, John was sat at the next table to us and joked that he wasn’t special at all but the dish certainly was! The combination of fresh garlic, onion and ginger was warming and made for a delicious dish.

Across the table my wife opted for a king with capsicum, onion, tomatoes, coriander, fenugreek leaves and balti spices. It was another winner; the large, juicy prawns beautifully.

We’d also brought our children along –they’re huge fans of Zara’s – and whilst they enjoyed sharing our starters with us, they stuck to an old favourite for their main course. They ate every bit of their chicken korma (£9.99), which they complement with both plain (£3.85) and cheese nan

(£4.20) breads as well as pilau rice (£3.95).

Thankfully there was enough rice and bread left for my wife and I to share and we also sampled a very good portion of saag paneer (£3.99).

Suitably sated, we were more than happy with the meal we had enjoyed but my son had left room for dessert and enjoyed a cookies and cream cup (£5.50), which rounded things off nicely.

There are many reasons why restaurants succeed; the quality of food is clearly the most important factor but any drop in the standards of service, ambience and surroundings can impact your whole experience.

Zara’s consistently scores highly in all of the above and goes a long way to explain why this curry house remains so popular and why it retains such a high level of regular customers.

The residents of Tickhill are very lucky to have this restaurant on their doorstep.

At a time where rising costs are putting a strain on the nation, it’s important that we commend and celebrate the charities doing their part to support animals who have been surrendered due to the cost-of-living crisis.

One of those charities committed to caring for relinquished animals is Thornberry Animal Sanctuary. What started as a

Caring for animals since 1988, Thornberry Animal Sanctuary has since helped rescue and rehome around 20,000 animals, from dogs and cats to rabbits and horses. The organisation is passionate about rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming vulnerable and neglected animals.

“At Thornberry, we believe that every

Thornberry is made up of four sites. The main site, The Stables located at Todwick Road, is where most of their animals are surrendered to or brought in as strays. In order to manage the magnitude of animals being surrendered, owners are asked to complete a relinquishment form that can be found on Thornberry’s website and subsequently put on a waiting list.

When the animals are in their care, their dedicated team, alongside volunteers, work hard to ensure all the animals needs are catered for. With no two animals the same, each has different needs that the team assess when an animal is surrendered or rescued. Each department is committed to making the animals comfortable in their homes, well fed, watered and loved whilst

“Without our supporters, we would not be operational,” said FT. “Animal Rescue can be extremely challenging, and we receive no Government funding; therefore, we rely heavily on our incredible supporters.”

Through the love and encouragement of their ever-growing supporters and legacies, the sanctuary welcomed an onsite veterinary clinic for their animals, providing them with a vet and veterinary

nurse four days a week to allow all their animals medical care they need. The support of legacies has further helped them with additions such as the café and charity shop, open to the public seven days a week.

“Our Thornberry café and deli offer excellent food, attracting our supporters to come down, have lunch, and shop in our charity shop, allowing them to be involved in our work and support Thornberry in various ways while having a great time,” added FT.

Fundraising and events are crucial for the sanctuary to keep operating in the way they do today and change the lives of countless animals. They have held numerous events over the years, from dog shows and horse shows to a sponsored burlesque dance and seasonal fairs for the community to enjoy. With challenge events proving to adrenaline junkies alike, they will be running an Abseil Challenge and Snowdon Challenge this year and hope to get as many supporters involved as possible.

With all the support they receive, it is important to Thornberry that they give back to the community. Given the variety of animals and departments, there are numerous skills to learn and opportunities to explore. They aim to provide these opportunities to as many people as possible, students, giving them hands on experience alongside their studies.

Pennsylvania trip for pupil

Hip pain – When to consider surgery?

Not everyone needs to be seen in Orthopaedic clinic but here are some of the common symptoms that I see in my adult hip clinic. By Mr Colin Holton.

n my clinic, I review and, when appropriate, offer surgery including hip arthroscopy (keyhole surgery on the hip joint), total hip replacement and osteotomy (cutting and realigning the bone) to the pelvis and femur.

surgery are likely to have these symptoms:

• Hip pain that persists or is recurrent in the hip, groin, or buttock area, especially during movement or weightbearing activities. This pain may indicate conditions such as labral tears, femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI), hip dysplasia, or osteoarthritis.

• Limited range of movement, stiffness, a sensation of catching, locking, clicking, giving-way popping or grinding sensations within the hip joint especially during movement.

Some patients may have experienced recurrent injuries, or have been undergoing conservative treatment which has not alleviated the symptoms, leading to consideration of surgical solutions.

Evaluation and investigation of the above symptoms may highlight patients (usually under 50 years of age) that would lead to improved pain relief, enhanced joint function, and a return to peak physical performance.

The recovery process following hip arthroscopy involves several phases to optimise healing and rehabilitation. While individual recovery may vary based on

treated, below is an outline of the typical recovery timeline and goal progression following hip arthroscopy:

1. Immediate Postoperative Period (Day of surgery and hospital stay):

- Patients are discharged home on the same or following day of the procedure.

- Most patients will be fully weightbearing with elbow crutches.

2. Early Postoperative Period (First 1-2 weeks):

- Physiotherapy and rehabilitation will allow early mobility, prevent stiffness, and enhance muscle activation.

- The wounds (usually two small incision (~1-2cm)) will be dressed to allow showering immediately after surgery.

3. Intermediate Recovery Period (2-6 weeks):

- Physiotherapy will progress to focus on restoring hip joint mobility, proprioception, and strength while also addressing any residual swelling or tenderness.

4. Advanced Recovery Period (6 weeks to 3 months):

- Increasing emphasis on strengthening the hip musculature, improving functional movements, and safely reintroducing lowimpact activities.

5. Long-Term Rehabilitation (3 months and beyond):

- Optimisation of hip muscle strength, endurance, and dynamic stability for prolonged functional recovery. This will allow gradual return to higher-impact activities, sports, and recreational exercise tailored to each patient’s functional goals.

Throughout this process, some instructions regarding activity restrictions, weight-bearing limitations, and rehabilitation protocols depending on

patients will return to driving between 4-6 weeks post surgery and return to work at a desk at 4-6 weeks whilst more physically demanding manual jobs and activities can take up to 3 months to return to.

In summary, hip arthroscopy offers

to a diverse range of individuals, including athletes, patients with hip injuries or underlying hip conditions. By providing this targeted, precise intervention with minimal disruption we are able to improve function and quality of life for many patients.
