Greetings Region 4!

And as one chapter commissioned, we have a new chapter in training. K’Ehleyr Station has returned to Las Vegas, Nevada. Congratulations to CO, Joshua Andrews and the crew of K’Ehleyr Station! I want to thank everyone who submitted award nominations. We had a total of 18 nominations. Region 4 VRC, Jennifer Cole, and I made the decision who to submit for the STARFLEET International Awards. Nominations were submitted to STARFLEET by the deadline. Region 4 Award Winners will be announced in the next newsletter, at STARFLEET International Conference in August and Awards will be handed out at the Region 4 Conference in October. (Let’s hope that we have International Awards to hand out in addition to Regional ones.) Congratulations to K’Ehleyr Station and their CO, Joshua Andrews, on their bid for the Region 4 Conference to be held on October 7-9, 2011, in Las Vegas Nevada. The conference will be held at the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino. It has a bowling center and a Regal Theater. No chance getting bored. If you find time to be bored, the Vegas Strip is just a few miles away with lots more entertainment. At the Region 4 Conference, there will be a Friday night social. Saturday morning will be the general meeting. After the general meeting will be the Marine Muster and other activities to be announced. Saturday night will be banquet and award ceremonies. Sunday morning will give us one last chance to see each other at breakfast. More information to come out soon. Check the Region 4 email list and the website for more information. I am still looking to fill in the holes in the regional staff. The staff positions are Regional ShOC and Awards Director. Regional ShOC duties include working with chapters in training and STARFLEET ShOC to make sure that the chapter is ready to launch on time. Regional Award Director is responsible for getting awards, putting together an award committee and submitting the awards to STARFLEET.

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood STARFLEET Chaplain. I would like to take this short opportunity to thank all of the members within Region 4 who hold a chaplain's position within their chapter/MSG for the wonderful work you do to spread the message of faith, love, & support to your crew. I would also like to encourage anyone who would desire to hold the position of chaplain to do so at the discretion of their CO/MSG OIC. It's a rare opportunity and a humble one at best but we are thankful to be available for those who have the need at times of hospitalization, passing, or crisis management support. Within the fleet, Chaplain Services is looking for a volunteer to take the position as a Chaplain Liaison for Region 4. This individual would become a member of the Chaplain Services staff. Duties would include monthly reporting to the STARFLEET Deputy Chaplain and the ability to represent and coordinate chaplain activities and information within your region. USS ANGELES Visits STARFLEET ACADEMY!

is long robes flowing around him, the Vulcan ambassador gracefully walked up the long steps of Starfleet Academy. Maybe he would find Jim Kirk. Luis Valentine, aka Ambassador Soval, and other USS Angeles members, longtime and new, beamed down April 17 to both Starfleet Academy filming sites. Luis made the long walk by himself at the California State University at Northridge library, which doubled as Starfleet Academy in the 2009 “Star Trek” movie. A few minutes later, other USS Angeles members climbed the steps. Going back down the steps, I told them, “I know how to pass the Kobayashi Maru test.” “Cheat!” the other members shouted in union during our interpretation of Kirk’s (Chris Pine) scene with Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) from the film. (Kirk passed the test by messing with the computer simulation.) Climbing the steps, besides Luis and me, were Janice Willcocks, Karen Hoagland and Renee Wike, all in uniform, along with Gloria Rodriguez, Jackie Freeman, Kat Campbell, new member Kayla Zaraka and her son Alex. While we didn’t run into Kirk, we made first contact With another life form: squirrels who approached us on the campus! Besides the “Star Trek” movie, the CSUN library appeared as Starfleet headquarters in the series finale of “Star Trek: Enterprise.” Before heading to CSUN, the same group plus others toured the other site used for Starfleet Academy: the Japanese Garden in Van Nuys. (It’s part of the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant.) Joining us at Japanese Garden were Jon Lane and his baby son Jayden, Elizabeth and Kelly Critch, Christopher Mulrooney and James Lake and his daughter. James contacted me through the Angeles website and is considering joining the ship. And Shaunn Lawrence stopped by briefly. The Japanese Garden and the plant, with its futuristic building, served as the academy in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “First Duty,” the headquarters in the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” two-parter consisting of “Paradise Lost” and “Homefront,” and Starfleet Academy in a simulation on “Star Trek: Voyager.” It was Starfleet Headquarters again in an “Enterprise” episode. And during the first season of “Next Generation,” the site was the planet in “Justice,” where Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) faced capital punishment for stepping on the grass. (We were careful not to do that.) I told the group about the “Star Trek” episodes, and Janice pointed out the cultural significance of the stones and trees as we walked around the garden. We also went through the tea house. What’s more, we visited the futuristic building that served as the academy and headquarters in “Star Trek” episodes, in which it was enhanced with a few computer-generated images. And images of the Golden Gate Bridge were added in the backgrounds of both the Japanese Garden and CSUN sites. “It was so beautiful,” Renee said about the garden, adding that she loved being at the sites where “Star Trek” episodes are filmed. Afterward, we stopped by member Lynda Foley’s house in Northridge, where she graciously gave us costumes from “Babylon 5,” “The Postman” and other productions. She picked them up at a Warner Bros. Studios liquidation sale. Lynda, a longtime USS Angeles member who’s active again, will a host an Angeles pool party there July 2. In the 1990s, Lynda hosted parties at her house, and it’s great to see her active in the ship again! While we visited her April 17, we saw her son Jonathan, 20. He’s doing some acting, including some voiceover work. Thanks for the costumes and for hosting us, Lynda! In February, eight Apache Junction organizations joined together in their 3rd "Adopt a Street" clean-up of Goldfield Rd. The Apache Junction Kiwanis Club (Pres. Art Flowers), our motto is: Serving the Children of the World, One Child and One Community at a time, Superstition Mountain Republican Club (SMRC: Pres. Todd House), Superstition Mountain Treasure Hunters (SMTH: coPresidents: Cyndi and Dan Ware), Paws 4 Life (Pres. Tuni House), Reserve Officers' Association (ROA, chairwoman LTC Anne Fesler-Butts, Ret.), Startrek, USS Leonidas (CDR/LT Arthur FeslerButts), Apache Junction T.E.A. Party (co-chairs: Judy and Tom Norvalsky) and the Non-Commissioned Officers' Association (NCOA: chair: SFC Arthur Fesler-Butts, Ret.). Their area of responsibility is the entire length of Goldfield Rd., south from Southern Rd. north to Lost Dutchman Rd.

Paws 4 Life trains dogs from basic thru advance obedience and they also train dogs to be certified as service dogs, if interested contact Tuni House at, 480-288-5174. The Feedbag restaurant is the meeting location for 3 of these groups: SMRC on the 2nd Tuesday of the month starting at 6:00 PM, A.J. Kiwanis, every 2nd and 4th Monday at 5:30 PM. There is a chartered Key Club at AJHS but it is inactive at this time due to my failure to convince the AJHS faculty to support the club and that I could not find a faculty member to sponsor the club. The Key club offers leadership camps, scholarships and a whole hosts of activities for our youth to take an advantage of learning experiences. A.J. T.E.A. Party, every Thursday at 6:30 PM, all open minded or curious members of our area and those who have productive ideas for making positive changes in our Country are welcomed. We are not a Republican of Conservative club, we have members from the Democratic and Libertarian parties and non-committed individuals in our organization. SMTH (Home of the "Trinity Bowl" meets the 1st Monday of every month at the Boys and Girls Club at 7:00 PM, for more information call: 480-983-3484. The ProMack Treasure Hunters' Store provides many of the banners seen around A.J. of upcoming events at cost or even free. The store is located just east of the Dairy Queen on Apache Trail. The ROA, NCOA and StarTrek chapters are new and are always looking for new members, call Art at: 480-369-2333. Please contact any or all of these organizations if you have an interest in learning more about us or if you wish to join. Most of these organizations have couple or family rates to join and some just ask for a donation of what you maybe willing to give. Come on and get involved in activities that are fun, educational and productive.

USS LEONIDAS cleans the STREETS!

With the permission again from the A.J.'s Public Works/Engineering Dept. via Mrs. Broehm, the workers separated road trash into the plastic bags, provided by the City of A.J.: all plastics, metals and glass in one bag, paper and paper products in a second bag, aluminum cans into a third bag and non-recyclables in a fourth bag. The groups divided into 6 groups and were able to accomplish the task in one and half hours. We have had to contract with a commercial company to place recyclable items into a container but the aluminum cans were cashed in for dividing the money among the separate groups.

RENDEZVOUS with CIRROC LOFTON!

LOS ANGELES — A quaint restaurant serves sandwiches and gelato between other eateries next to a tiny Los Angeles parking lot. A Denny's is across the street, and this cloudy period seems like just any old day on a planet called Earth. But never mind that nearby freeway. We're sitting next to a wormhole. And Jake Sisko is about to take us far beyond the stars. Inside his Cafe Cirroc and Restorante Polentoni, Cirroc Lofton, aka Jake, talked to a USS Angeles gathering of 26 people about life on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. "I remembered I was doing a serious scene. My dad (Capt. Ben Sisko, aka Avery Brooks) was on the death bed, and he was going to die," Lofton, 32, said at the May 7 meeting. "I was in my zone, off by myself and putting myself in that situation." But as filming started, Lofton saw something out of the corner of his eye. "I see Rene Auberjonois — Odo — off stage. He says, 'Am I finished?' Then he peels off his makeup," Lofton said, demonstrating with his hands. Odo's "face-off" disrupted Lofton's moment. "Thanks a lot for helping me out," Lofton said, getting more laughter from STARFLEET's growing chapter in Los Angeles. Lofton told us funny and insightful stories about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and made and served us sandwiches at his restaurant. The USS Angeles showed two Jake-centric episodes, "The Visitor" (1995) and "Nor the Battle to the Strong" (1996), an episode years ahead of its time in commenting on war. In one poignant scene filmed in Los Angeles' Bronson Canyon, Lofton runs like crazy to get away from bombs. "I thought I was in shape, but I was watching myself run," Lofton told the Angeles about the latter episode. "If I could do that now, I would take it." "The Visitor" was the episode in which Jake grows up without his father after a freakish warp core accident leaves him in limbo. Tony Todd played the older version of Jake, and Lofton said he liked the star's performance. Lofton told stories about the Paramount Pictures lot during the filming of "Star Trek" shows. He said he got in trouble for borrowing studio bicycles and playing basketball while riding in the golf carts normally used by producers. Hey, he was the son of the station's captain! Rank must have some privileges! After making us laugh, Lofton filled our stomachs with his sweet gelato. He also said Avery Brooks, who hasn't visited the restaurant but has sent him his good wishes, treated him like family. Lofton said their off-screen father/son bond made it easier to play that relationship before the cameras. But Lofton found out the hard way that Brooks, who would take red eye flights to commute between Los Angeles and his New Jersey home on weekends, doesn't sleep. "When I was in New Jersey, I was staying in his house and rendezvous with this girl while everyone is asleep," he said. "Here we are at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning. We're talking. I'm thinking no one's around. I lean in for kiss, and there's Avery." Lofton mimicked Brooks clearing his voice. "I realized he doesn't sleep!" Again, those assembled laughed. After Lofton's talk, First Officer Janice Willcocks presented him and his fiancee Sara with a certificate of appreciation. Second Officer Gloria Rodriguez tossed a USS Angeles cap to Janice, who awarded it to Cirroc. It was our second rendezvous with Lofton, who entertained us previously last November at his restaurant. The Aerie-class was first seen as the U.S.S. Raven in “Star Trek: Voyager”. More details of the ship were provided in the Starships resource book from Decipher’s Star Trek: The Role-Playing Game. First built in the late 2340s, the Aerie-class has been used extensively for both StarFleet and civilian activities. The ship is designed to operate independently for extended periods of time, carrying a small crew. Its design emphasizes research and exploration. Constructed and administered by StarFleet, some ships of the class operate “on loan” to civilian authorities for research expeditions. Others participate in exploratory missions for StarFleet itself. The powerful sensor suite and modular design have made this class an effective and versatile part of StarFleet’s overall forces. “In conservative Western culture, when adults dress up and play make-believe, it’s often seen as childish, or taboo. Many societies, in fact, look at it as taboo to participate in fantasy lives for the reason that we are expected to be high-functioning adults. Some people may say that fantasy lives is (sic) a way of denying the status quo, of denying reality. And some may go as far as to say that it is borderline delusional.” from “Fantasy Lives”, Taboo. Everyone expects being on TV to be exciting. Most would like at least to experience it, at least once. Well…

The first week of May we saw the first, and possibly the last, result of many hours of effort. Less than 30 seconds of footage served to illustrate the unflattering commentary quoted above. Seen at Vasquez Rocks, a popular filming site for movies and TV, were Jon, James Jones and daughter Nikki, Renee Wike, Pat Williams, and myself. Also, seen at this year’s Hollywood XPO convention, were Jon, Janice Willcocks, Scott Nakada, and Luis Valentin. All of us, excepting long-time Star Trek fan Pat, are STARFLEET members. Captain Nakada hails from Region 5’s USS Thermopylae. The only words heard from any of us were the Vulcan words for “live long and prosper” spoken by Luis, was in full Vulcan makeup and costume. And, no, the narration did not go on to counter the implication that Star Trek fans are socially suspect and possibly unbalanced. It returned to describing the “fantasy life” of a young Japanese man who dresses in anime costumes and looks pretty darned good in Sailor Moongear. Yes, it was a let down and even humiliating for most of us. We’d had reason to hope Beyond Productions would show an informative segment on our fan lifestyle after all the interviews and filming of last September and October. In April one of their researchers again contacted STARFLEET: “At the moment I am preparing an episode on Double Lives. I am very interested in people who live busy professional lives, and then in their private time, devote themselves to their Star Trek passion, perhaps dressing up as a Star Trek character when at home, roleplaying, etc…I want to stress that we do not sensationalize any of our stories. We seek to examine a topic to truly understand the people involved.” It seemed they were not finished with us.

TREK FANS get no RESPECT on NATGEO!

A few months ago Rear Admiral Jon Lane (USS Angeles) wrote an article for STARFLEET Communiqué [issue 162] detailing the complications of coordinating uniformed Star Trek fans for filming by a television production crew. The crew from Australia-based Beyond Productions needed us for Taboo, a series that runs on National Geographic channel. We were hopeful that our interviews would show Star Trek fandom in a positive light. ThenSTARFLEET Chief of Communications Jon Lane was especially hoping STARFLEET would get some nice publicity.

> Continued from Previous Page > Jon Lane commented online, “I'm actually curious to see if we make it into the episode of Taboowhen all is said and done. I was told back in February that we got bumped. Now we seem to be back in. Ah, show business!”

In the end, Jon Lane summed up the positives. “When all is said and done, I think Gloria said it best, ‘At least we got a free lunch out of it.’ They didn't mention Starfleet or the USS Angeles or any of us by name or say anything specifically disparaging about a particular person or group. We were simply 15 seconds of B-roll filler during a segment on Japanese cosplay. Not the incredible ‘free publicity’ that I'd hoped for nor the exploitative embarrassment that some feared. It wasn't even right smack in the middle. Indeed, it wasn't much of anything at all. I thought we actually looked pretty good (except one shot where I looked really fat). “ But Marine Colonel James Jones (USS Angeles) saw it differently. “The only thing I could think was, ‘All that time, effort and energy (was) totally wasted. I had to take time off from work to be portrayed as possibly part of the village idiots?’

But there was a hint that something was off. Commander Jason Garrett of Region 20’s USS Ark Royal shared with the Region 4 List some questions he’d received from the same researcher, Sonya Humphrey. Do you sleep in your uniform? Do you keep your interest of Star Trek hidden from family and friends? Has Star Trek caused problems in your relationships - discuss? Can you separate your Star Trek lifestyle from you ordinary lifestyle? There was much discussion as to whether these questions indicated simple ignorance or the intention of finding a suitably extreme Trekkie.

Chief Petty Officer Renee Wike (USS Angeles) was even more incensed. “The only word I can come up with that encapsulates my feelings about the whole experience is ‘Manipulated’. I went into this shoot with the feeling that maybe Trekkies, Trekkers, etc., would be portrayed as we really are – as normal people that happen to have a love of something that is meaningful to us. The way I understood this was going to work is that they wanted to photograph us and talk to us about what Star Trek meant to us; we would be allowed to express how Trek has influenced our lives in a positive way. Instead, we were told how to stand, where to walk and even when they asked us questions I felt we were almost guided into how to answer… The bonehead producer basically told us what to say in a conversation that we were supposedly having. To be honest, I felt like an idiot. I feel we were just used for an agenda they already had in mind…I felt ‘lied to’; they knew what they were going to do all along and we were just their patsies to try to make us look, as James said, like ‘Village Idiots’.” Lieutenant Commander Luis Valentin (USS Angeles) has also expressed disappointment. He was pleased to be even momentarily heard on the show, but he felt they made us look bad. And he agrees with my suspicion that we may not have heard the last of this. Beyond Productions has full rights to all our interviews and images. Who knows where else they may decide to use them?

Rear Admiral Janice Willcocks (USS Angeles) had similar concerns before seeing this episode. “No matter what we said, we are at the mercy of how they edit the show together. That's what I’m worried about.” So this story is perhaps as much cautionary as instructive. Or we can take Jon’s attitude, “Sometimes it's a great opportunity, and other times, well, it's just nothing.”

Our photo clip was totally unnecessary and used out of context for the original purpose of filming. In a way, our segment being bumped speaks volumes... We weren't ‘interesting’ enough to be lumped in with the Adult Baby and Anime Cross-dressers…I know that Pat and I answered (their questions) with the clarity of sane, welladjusted, highly-functioning, above-average citizens...NAT could not use any part or piece of our interviews that would credibly show all of society that Trek fans are mentally skewed. All Trek fans are not nut-jobs and our bumped interviews support that.”

Ingredients: ∗ 1/2 cup lard or Crisco shortening ∗ 3 cups all-purpose flour ∗ dash salt ∗ 3/4 cup warm water ∗ 1/2 cup vegetable oil Topping: ∗ 1 cup sugar ∗ 1 tsp ground cinnamon IN A HURRY? TRY THIS! Buy a package of flour tortillas. Place flour tortilla in hot shortening or oil until crisp brown on both sides. Remove from pan and drain. Sprinkle sugar and ground cinnamon on top. Serve, if desired, with maple syrup or honey.

Directions: Heat oil in a shallow skillet until hot (350 degrees). Work shortening into flour and salt with a pastry blender or your hands. Add warm water and stir until dough comes together. Roll out to thin rounds 7-8 inches in diameter. Quarter each round and drop flat into hot oil, brown lightly about 30 seconds on each side. Remove from skillet and sprinkle to taste with topping mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Makes about 60 buñuelos.
