A Tribute to Coach Doug Quinney by Greg Davie '76

It doesn't take an Alumni Association to know how cherished a teacher was or how deep a coaching influence would be forever emblazoned into a person's life. Or more accurately - into MANY peoples’ lives. Thankfully, we do have this organization and can indeed share the memories and our collective gratitude to one such teacher and coach, Mr. Douglas Ireland Quinney, who passed away in the early morning hours of Sept. 20, 2014. For those of us preparing the American Legion banquet hall that same day for our 12th annual Alumni Sports Hall of Fame Induction that evening, it was a most shocking announcement to absorb. The Facebook community and those who utilized phone or word of mouth communication, spread the news quickly in an overall sense of loss impossible to measure. After the exhilaration of another highly successful SHOF event, I was asked to put into words what so many of us who knew, loved and respected Coach Quinney, were feeling. Let me tell you now, it is not easy. From Doug's obituary, one can obtain the objective form of his life and his accomplishments. But one would be remiss to not look between the lines written there to see much more. Perhaps treat it like a track meet. After all, the track has lines...the field events venues all have lines...but those are measurable. Anyone who ran, threw, jumped, walked, or hurdled will concur: What Doug Quinney meant transcends any track, and set of lines. His influences are immeasurable. Those who had Doug for 10th or 11th grade social studies, government, senior survival, or even study hall can add their memories, too. A positive outlook, a tendency to push you just hard enough to exceed his and your expectations, the ability to laugh at yourself, the sense of teamwork away from a framework of “sports”. Grades are measurable, the other stuff? Immeasurable. Younger ones rode the track success in a different way than the older ones. Indoor track meets in Cortland or Cornell have been commonplace since the early 1980s. Try shoveling off the parking lot at Maine-Endwell High School to form a 220 yard oval (yes...yards!) because that was the season-opening meet in 1973!

mid-1980s, Sidney was regarded as a premier track program on par with all of the largest schools in Section IV. Many athletes weren't content with running in one or two seasons per year either. They took Coach Quinney's advice and entered the scholastic division of the summer's premier event, the Empire State Games. The coaching never stopped – and it didn't cost you a dime. By 1989, the already-strong foundation became fortified with the first of many New York State individual champions, when Wendy Simonds won the discus. Then came Jennifer Finnegan who represented Sidney in the prestigious Milrose Games, won the National High School Indoor Mile and the NYS Outdoor 1500 meters, and was named Gatorade Female Track Athlete of the Year, as well as High School All -American. Six years later, Robb Munro would be Doug's second HS All-American. I didn't want to get into the names so much, but the “first” ones needed to be mentioned, don't you think? Seriously, these and many other state champions are going to be quick to give Doug, or the many, many volunteer coaches so much credit (more on the coaches later). Not everyone could be a champion of course. It was the kid who failed to make the varsity basketball team, or was unhappy as a wrestler or baseball player who Doug pursued with vigor. He wanted to, as they say, “untap the potential” that he believed each youngster had hidden within. If he or she doubted it? Doug was there to reaffirm it. Happened time and time again. For 4 decades! Who can keep up that level of passion and dedication to a program? Doug Quinney, that's who! Another quick story from way back: In those early days of indoor track, sometimes the team would not be afforded a bus. I know my father, Norm Davie, along with Dave Plummer Sr., were more than willing to provide the proverbial family station wagons for transportation. Afterwards, when the team would stop somewhere to eat, Doug would “disperse the funds” from the paltry budget for his drivers. Each driver got $5. Both men refused to take it. Who else could get entire families involved in their children's sports to that extent? Doug Quinney, that's who!

Who else could get former collegiate runners and jumpers who were Sidney teachers and/or administrators to volunteer Or try taking your starting blocks to the end their time to coach Sidney athletes? I mean, this of the Broome County Arena's concourse in partial list that includes current Hall of Fame 1974 to use for your start of the 60 yard dash coaches, Larry Armour, Spike Paranya and or hurdles. Oh yes, the concourse! Running Roxy Birdsall, plus John Cappello, Mark the entire Arena concourse twice equaled Hinsch and Bill Munro? 1,000 yards. Relays on that floor were an Doug Quinney, that's who! adventure! In the 1970s, getting to run Sectionals in the old Barton Hall at Cornell was Who else could convince an entire school dislike finding the Emerald City compared to trict that their school colors were actually red the earlier meets just described. and white instead of the actual maroon and Starting both the indoor program and women's track for winter and spring were challenges Doug gladly accepted. By the

white? You know - “Quinney maroon?” Who else could have his state track participants, ON THEIR OWN, shed the school-issued maroon

Douglas I. Quinney 1946 ~ 2014 track uniforms and return to the red and white ones with SIDNEY on the chest? Doug Quinney, that's who! Who else could take a groggy 10th grade student and get them excited – or at least ready – for World History? How about those “QQQs” or “Quinney Quick Quizzes?” Who could write those effective college recommendation letters, or nominate a track kid who realized his or her “untapped potential” for a WCDO Athlete of the Week Award? Doug Quinney, that's who! Nicknames became commonplace, too. They always played off your looks, your name or your personality. It may have been offensive at first, but it also gave you the feeling that you belonged to the team if you got a nickname. Who else could do that? Doug Quinney, that's who! A number of former athletes made a pilgrimmage back to Sidney with little notice to attend the alltoo-brief calling hours a week following Doug's passing. Many others could not, though the Alumni and personal Facebook postings made it clear they wish they could have. But the final question, who else could have so much of an effect that the response (in person or via social media) was so vast and so consistent? Doug Quinney, that’s who! To return to our track meet analogy let me convey what Doug meant to our Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 2004 which was our second year, and immediately asked to join our committee because he believed in our purpose. Since we began, no one else was asked to introduce more inductees – coaches and athletes! – than Doug. He also took control of the second Legacy Award in 2008. That award went to almost 100 individuals who were documented as school track & field record holders. To his credit, Coach Quinney prepared letters, sent e-mails and expertly and thoroughly spearheaded a fitting tribute to his former charges. The record, 200 in attendance had a wonderful evening. I can't help but chuckle and nod my head when remembering his 2004 induction speech. Not for what he said, but how years later he had kids (now young adults) using a stop watch to “time” their coach on his predictably long oration. Each one put a dollar into a betting pool trying to guess how long that speech would be. Doug's final time was 18:56, which was longer than anyone guessed. Is anyone surprised? And so, as we come to the finish line of this track meet, let us say: Rest in Peace, Coach. For all you did to help and support students and athletes over nearly a half-century, may we all say, “You ran a great race”.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS Doug Sheldon, 1959

Jon Jay DeTemple, 1961

I am proud to have served the SCS Alumni Association for the past 15 years as director, vicepresident, chair of the Wall of Fame Committee and now president. It is quite an honor and a most satisfying reward to be able to give back to the community and to the school system that nurtured me and raised me and enabled me to go on in life in a successful manner. I am extremely proud of my parents, Ray and Belle Sheldon and all they gave to the students they taught between 1945 and 1984, and I consider it an obligation to continue in the love and service they gave to SCS and to the community.

I consider myself very fortunate to have served on the SCSAA Board of Directors. What motivates me to seek another term is the opportunity to continue giving back through service to the Sidney Central School Alumni Association. I have either been on or worked for a number of governing boards over the years. This experience has helped me to contribute to the SCSAA Board.

Many of you know that my career takes me to many parts of the world regularly, and that it is as close to 24/7 as one can have and still get some sleep. Yet I often make the 400 mile round trip to attend board meetings and committee meetings and reunion and also an annual four-day Memorial Day holiday with my children and grandchildren. Yes, I find time because I realize how strong my roots and the bonds of friendship are in Sidney, and because I also want my grandchildren to know and be part of that.

Dick Germond, 1963 My enthusiasm for SCSAA’s mission and what it accomplishes for alumni, school and community has not waned over the many years I’ve been involved with the organization and served as a member of the Board of Directors; it has only increased. As a member of the Board of Directors, I’m especially gratified working as chair of the Endowed Scholarship Committee and also as a member of the Wall of Fame and Long Range Planning Committees. I feel it extremely important to get more young alumni involved and in positions of leadership; and personally, look forward to stepping aside when others are ready to step up to the challenge of ensuring SCSAA is as relevant and vibrant in the future, as it has been in the past. Until then, please cast your vote for me as a member of SCSAA’s Board of Directors. Thank You.

My work on the SCSAA Board has included developing the annual budget, being a founding member of the Wall of Fame, speaking for SCSAA at events, and participating in key policy decisions. I would like to be able to continue working with a great group of people on the many activities that keep us connected to Sidney, the place and people we love. If you are so inclined to place your confidence in me, serving on the SCSAA Board of Directors would be an honor. Thank you for your consideration.

Anne M. Mott, 1983 Having served on the Alumni Association for many years, I am more than ever committed to being a part of this ever-changing group of people who have the best interest of the Sidney Alumni at heart with everything they accomplish. Presently, I am serving as the assistant treasurer and am part of the Scholarship committee, as well as helping with the Alumni weekend activities. I have lived in the area all my life, currently residing in Bainbridge. For numerous years I have participated in a number of organizations in the Sidney and Bainbridge area; Sidney Dollars for Scholars, Isaac Nieves Boy Scout Scholarship Committee, Ed Wessels Canoe Regatta, General Clinton Canoe Regatta, and Boy Scouts of America, to name a few. I look forward to many additional years serving on the Alumni Association board.

Vicki Miller Kulze, 1970 I have been on the SCSAA Board of Directors for about two years now. I always valued the hard work of the association in putting on such amazing alumni weekends. That is why I chose to serve on this board. I felt that it was time that I gave back. I feel that Sidney alumni are so very fortunate to have this group. I oversee the Alumni Room, have served with the Nominating Committee, and help during alumni weekend activities. I am pleased that our association has chosen to expand its activity beyond the July weekend, with the annual Sports Hall of Fame, our support of the digitization project of the local newspaper, holding future career days, and with on-going scholarships. It is very progressive that we are expanding out, tying ourselves more with the community and the school. I would like to continue to serve on the SCSAA Board of Directors in the future.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS Terry Dermody, 1965 My name is Terry Dermody and I am seeking re-election to the position of Director of the SCS Alumni Association. I was born and raised in Sidney and I am a 1965 graduate of Sidney High School. I am proud to have served on the SCS Alumni Association Board for 15 years as director, and was president from 1998 to 2012. Together with other dedicated alumni, I have worked towards formalizing the goals and purposes of the association and building a strong foundation. With the support of the alumni community and the SCSAA Board of Directors, we have been able to direct the growth of the association into an active and meaningful organization. We advanced ur purposes to create a link between alumni and the community, ignited the interest, and increased the visibility of the association. My experience with the association has been enjoyable and rewarding. I have a fond affection for our hometown, and through the activities of the association we have been able to make a small contribution towards maintaining the vitality of the community. Considerable progress has been made, but there is much more to be accomplished. I consider it an honor and a privilege to continue to serve the association and pursue the vision. Thank you for your consideration.

Bryan Innes, 2001 I wish to continue to hold my position as a Director for the SCSAA. For several years now I have been an active board member participating in SCSAA activities, most notably, acting as Chairman of the Alumni Golf Tournament that takes place during All-Class Alumni Weekend. I currently am Director of Operations for SIRVA Corporate Housing, based out of New York City. I have been with SIRVA for 9 years holding various positions. In 2010 I received the CRP (Certified Relocation Professional) certification, and in 2013, the CCHP (Certified Corporate Housing Professional) certification. I look forward to continue to give back to the school as well as the local community.

Wayne King, 1952 I have served on the board of directors for several years and I am presently the treasurer of the board. I graduated from Sidney in 1952 and I currently serve as the class representative. Except for my college years, I have spent my entire life in the Sidney area. I was honored to be inducted into the Sidney Wall of Fame in 2012 and my 1951 football team was chosen as the legacy team for the Sports Hall of fame a few years ago. I am proud to serve on the alumni board and if I am re-elected I will work hard to maintain the proud heritage of the association. Thank you for your consideration.

Jim McIntyre, 1960 I was born and raised in Sidney, attended kindergarten through high school in the now abandoned Pleasant St. school, then what’s today’s Civic Center, and was the first class to graduate from the new high school in 1960. I attended the Air Force Academy, and served as a commissioned officer and pilot in the USAF, retiring as a Brig. General with 30 yreas of service. I then served as a VP in USAA Financial Services Corp for 5 years followed by a faculty professor at Florida Tech for another 5 years before “fully” retiring. I’m a snowbird cycling seasonally between Florida and Sidney. I joined the SCSAA Board of Directors in Sept. 2007, following my induction into the SCSAA Wall of Fame (see bio at http://www.sidneyalumni.org/Wall_of_Fame/mcintyre.html) and have served as the VP for Strategic Planning ever since. It has been an inspiration to serve with a board leadership whose vision created a model alumni association unmatched anywhere in the US. I hope to continue to give back to the school and community that gave me such a firm foundation for success in three diverse career settings -- the military, corporate, and university. My focus going forward is to “proactively address our changing landscape and perpetuate SCSAA through rediscovery.”

Ray Taylor, 1955 I would like to be considered for re-election as a director of the Sidney Central School Alumni Association. I graduated from Sidney Central School in '55, and married Elma 'Daniels' Taylor class of '56. We have 2 grown children who are also graduates of Sidney High. Ray Jr., ('74), lives in Dublin OH and has 2 children. Randy, ('77) lives in Rochester, NY and has 2 children. I would like to renew my commitment to this organization by asking for your vote for my reelection to the Board of Directors. As a Director and Web Master, I would like to continue to do my part, to see this association continue to grow. Thanks.

Dennis Porter, 1966 I have been on the Sidney Alumni Association Board for the past 16 years. I once said, “I am as excited about our organization now as I was when we were a fledgling organization". I have watched our alumni weekend become one of the major social events in Sidney. The Sports Hall of Fame and the Wall of Fame are the exemplary recognition events and I am proud to be a part of them since their inception. I am so proud to be a part of this organization. I am the Vice President of Operations and Chairman of the Wall of Fame Committee, member of the Sports Hall of Fame Committee and School Relations Committee. I believe that I have provided new ideas and direction to the board and would like to help further the growth of our association. I will complete my 30th year with the United Way of Sidney. I am an active member of the Veterans Memorial Committee, Prospect Hill Cemetery Association and I’m currently Treasurer for the Rotary Club. Margaret and I celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary and hosted our daughter Sarah’s (‘01) wedding this fall. Our son Mark (‘98) is an attorney at a large firm in Washington D.C. Now retired from the Amphenol Corporation, I can be found trying to improve my swing at various golf courses in the Sidney area. I consider it an honor and a privilege to serve as a member of the SCSAA Board of Directors for the next three years. Thank you for your consideration.

Deborah Woytek Puffer, 1968 I have been a SCSAA Board Member since 2001 and have been corresponding secretary for most of that time. I really enjoy working with all the people on the board and helping to connect alumni from all over the country and bring them together during the annual alumni weekend. I think it is a great thing the board does to bring the people back to Sidney to meet up with old classmates and to make new friends and to see how Sidney has changed, or not changed. I would appreciate your vote so I may continue to serve our alumni, community and school.

Teri Schunk, 1984 I would like to continue to hold my position as a Director for the SCSAA. I currently am an active director of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce and serve on several committees within the chamber. For the last year I was an active Board Member participating in SCSAA activities. I serve on the membership committee and am active in the All-Class Alumni Weekend. Currently, I am employed at Mang/NBT Insurance Agency and have been an account executive for 25 years. I have received top sales awards for the last 12 years and am certified in Worksite Wellness. I am very excited to be working with the SCSAA in the future.

And a very special thanks goes to Mang Insurance, the Platinum sponsor for the golf tournament. Each year the tournament seems to become more popular. Sometime in February 2015 an email blast will go out to all alumni letting you know that registration is open. If you do not receive emails from the Alumni Assn. or are unsure if you do, and you would like to be added, please email Ray Taylor at update@sidney alumni.org to be added. A Personal View of the Alumni Memorial By Shane Eaton Armstrong For generations, Sidney graduates have been serving in our military forces. In honor of all the Sidney Warriors who have served their country, the Sidney Veterans Memorial Park Association has dedicated space for the Sidney Alumni Veterans Memorial. The memorial will be located prominently at the entrance of the park, at the corner of Route 8 and River Street in Sidney, and will be a component of a larger Veterans Memorial Park already being constructed. The Sidney Alumni Veterans Memorial Wall project is expected to cost $20,000. The board of directors of the Sidney Central School Alumni Association (SCSAA) has made a $10,000 matching challenge grant to the Sidney Veterans Memorial Park Association, matching each donation they receive for the creation of the Wall dollar for dollar. Your contribution will help honor the Sidney Alumni who have served our nation with integrity for the freedoms we enjoy, love and defend so dearly. As a 1998 graduate of Sidney Central Schools and a Veteran of the US Army, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, I am grateful that the idea of a memorial is now coming to fruition. We need your support. Please make checks payable to: SCSAA or Sidney Central School Alumni Association Mail your check to: SCSAA, P.O. Great-grandfather, A.B. Elliott, a watchmaker and jeweler from 1875 to 1944, bought the clock second hand. It was shipped from Indiana and brought to Sidney by his son, Fred, in 1911. This large timepiece is on display at our museum for everyone to enjoy. We thank the Elliott family for their generous donation. The museum, located in room 218, in the Civic Center on Liberty St., is open Wed. 4-6 pm and Thurs. 9:30 am-noon, or by appointment. Please call Joelene, 563-1425, to make arrangements for an appointment. Visit www.sidneyonline.com/ sha.htm to become a member, order an “Images of America Sidney” book, or watch a slide

Sidney Alumni Class Rep Program Our class representatives are an important part of the Sidney Alumni Association. They work hard to communicate, organize, facilitate, motivate and exchange ideas. They connect their classmates and provide the foundation for communicating and planning activities. It has recently come to our attention that some class reps who are hoping to expand and strengthen their activities, have questions and are looking for suggestions and new ideas. At the same time, some of the experienced class reps have wonderfully successful activities that are part of their programs. So, it makes good sense to offer opportunities to “connect the class reps” so that they can meet, share experiences and make plans together. Chris Ossont has offered to facilitate a program with class reps to help them connect with each other, answer questions, discuss challenges, and encourage their sharing of ideas. The first meetings were held during Alumni Weekend. A total of 15 class reps met with the group on either Saturday or Sunday morning; 7 others responded that they could not attend, but looked forward to being a part of the class rep program. It was fun to see all of the creativity and energy and to hear about the exciting things that are being done! Email communication has become the important means of keeping in touch, and most classes have an up-to-date email list of classmates. Some classes have their own Facebook website, some celebrate important birthday years, and other classes announce birthdays of their classmates by email. One class meets monthly for lunch! Please support your class rep. Make sure that your email address and contact info is updated on the Sidney website (send an email to Ray Taylor, Webmaster, at update@sidneyalumni.org ) as well as with your class rep. Send ideas, information, pictures, etc. to your class rep to be shared with classmates either on your webpage, by email, or in Reflections, and let them know that you are interested in being involved. We are so fortunate to have one of the most active alumni associations in the country. The board and leaders give of their time and talent to provide a wonderful newsletter and a variety of activities throughout the year, especially during alumni weekend. Please let them know how much you appreciate their efforts!

SPECIAL NOTICE TO ALUMNI AND CLASS REPRESENTATIVES The Class Roster and Class Rep list are essential for ensuring that communications about the Alumni Association reach you. The SCSAA has a class roster that contains the names of all Sidney alumni. Your contact information is only as current as your membership. When you join or renew and send your contact information, it is entered in the roster and on the website unless, in the case of the latter, you indicate you do not want it posted. The future of Reflections depends on alumni maintaining their official membership. The list of Class Representatives has been updated and revised. Please check the list. Are you listed as the “Class Rep”? If so, is your contact information, i.e., name, address, phone number and email address, correct? Is your class in need of Class Rep? Would you like to volunteer? Submit your name and contact information to: update@sidneyalumni.org Be sure to write “New Class Rep” on the form. The membership form is in Reflections, and an abbreviated form is on the website. Membership cost is $15/year; 10/year (for seniors over 65), due by July 31, 2014. See page 16 for Membership Form.
