message from one in ten president

welcome Dear Friends, Welcome to this year’s Reel Affirmations! We at One in Ten are very excited about the festival line-up and know you will enjoy the wonderful films we have to offer at RA21. Whenever we begin a new festival; I take the opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made over the year, and to look forward to the journey we still have ahead of us. As you can see from this year’s guide, we are proud. One in Ten is a strong and stable organization and we remain grateful for your support.

one in ten is a “ strong and stable organization and we remain grateful for your support.

However, it is in this spirit of reflection that I also wanted to share with you information about the difficulties One in Ten has faced and continues to face. The economic downturn has hurt everyone — One in Ten included. Sponsorships, advertisements and donations were more difficult than ever to acquire. Money was simply not coming in the door, and there were even darker days when the festival was cancelled in 2010. Everyone worked tirelessly, though none worked as hard as our executive director Kimberley Bush. With hard work and the outpouring of support from the community we were successful in pulling off what felt like the impossible. I am proud to say that Reel Affirmations is here and better than ever! We cannot continue to do it without you! Thank you for your past support, and I hope

you will continue to help us bring this important programming to the D.C. metropolitan area. We have been working countless hours for the past several months to keep the only visual venue for the consistent exposure of LGBT film alive. Our efforts range from handpicking passionate volunteers to meeting with filmmakers, managing our community outreach and high level multimedia marketing plan and pulling it all together creating the 21st annual Washington, D.C.,’s International LGBT Film Festival. To ensure we can continue to provide you with the quality programming you have come to expect and love, we are continuing our aggressive fundraising campaign—Focus on the Future. Please be as generous as you can so that Reel Affirmations has a future of which we can all be proud. Thank you, again for making RA21 possible and for all of your support! If you are interested in further supporting One in Ten by bringing your skills, vision and energy to support our work as a volunteer or board member, please feel free to contact me. Enjoy the festival!

message from ra21 executive director

welcome Welcome to the NEW Reel Affirmations 21 Film Festival! You may ask yourself how can Reel Affirmations be NEW when we are proudly celebrating our 21st film festival. The answer is simple: We have NEW leadership, a NEW format and NEW ticket and pass prices.

scheduled “allwethehave screenings so you can ActuALLY sEE ALL thE FILms, participate in panel discussions and have a blast with your friends and community related events and celebrations!

08 /

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kimberley Bush, One In Ten/Reel Affirmations’ NEW executive director. While I am new to the position; OIT/Reel Affirmations is a dear, old friend of mine. Reel Affirmations and I go way back...to 1998 where I started as a volunteer who worked all aspects of the film festival. My experience ranges from programming to implementing what is now called community partnership/ outreach to chairing our grant program as a board member. I proudly bring my substantial experience coupled with my strong belief in our mission—to present images and stories of our LGBT family to the community—with a NEW format and NEW ticket pricing. This year we are changing things a bit with a brand NEW format and a NEW venue. Reel Affirmations has traditionally been a 10-day film festival with many venues playing host to our film screenings. In an effort to present only the most compelling and diverse films along with providing convenient access, we have shortened the film festival to four days. We will also use

only three venues. Additionally, we have scheduled all the screenings so you can ACTUALLY SEE ALL THE FILMS, meet the filmmakers, participate in panel discussions and have a blast with your friends and community members at our film related events and celebrations! You can now get a healthy dose of LGBTQ cinema and screen every film and attend every film event! Life doesn’t get any better! We understand how the economy has affected our community, so we have rolled back our ticket prices to 2008 prices. Our new individual ticket price is just $10! Even though we are going in NEW directions, we continue to showcase a number of pivotal, poignant and awardwinning films from around the world that have the ability to change lives and remind us how strong we are as a community. In sum, many amazing NEW changes + 45 films + you = one outstanding, must attend Reel Affirmations Film Festival! How can you not join us for the best film festival yet? Let the films begin! Enjoy!

The two women meet at an engagement party in the country — Frida’s mother is about to marry Mia’s father — and discover an instant attraction that immediately calls into question Mia’s engagement to her longtime boyfriend Tim. Notable for its sumptuous and sensual love scenes, Kiss Me deftly portrays the ecstasy of true undeniable lesbian love entwined with the angst of coming out. Beautifully written and directed and featuring exceptional performances from a stellar cast, this deeply romantic and passionate drama has earned universal acclaim from fans and critics around the world and has already established itself as one of the most beloved lesbian films of the decade. — KAITLIN WHITMAN, FILM PROGRAMMER

opening night i do Q ÅµÑ i Ñ >ç Å`ÑUÑ1- ÑUÑÛí§ÛÑUÑ }Ñ ÈR As its description indicates, “this new feature length narrative takes a look at the human cost of DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act,) the law that bars same-sex couples full federal level rights in America.” This indie film shows the emotional and heartbreaking reality of a gay couple who face being torn apart because of inequality in America. David Ross is Jack, a gay British photographer living in New York. Within the first few minutes of the movie, a tragic event forces him to put his personal life on hold in favor of family obligations. Fast forward a few years and Jack meets Mano, played by Maurice Compte, a Spanish architect. The chemistry is immediate, and the two become inseparable. An untimely rejection of a green card renewal application causes the nascent relationship to face an untimely demise. Enter Alicia Witt, who is Jack’s best girl and a lesbian. She and Jack decide to take on the system by getting married, thus protecting Jack’s immigration status. What the two don’t anticipate are her emotional needs, the effect of his absences, pressures from her friends and ultimately the threat from routine INS interviews. In addition, Mano is forced to choose between his professional position in Manhattan (alongside Jack) and unexpected family obligations back in Europe. Jack and Mano must ultimately decide independently what he is willing to give up in order to maintain what is most important. This is a beautifully produced film, which benefits from the prominence of New York City as its background, not to mention the depth afforded by the excellent ensemble cast. Guest appearance by writer/producer David w. ross. Award-winning actor Ohad Knoller gives a stellar performance as Dr. Yossi Hoffman, a workaholic doctor in Tel Aviv who has become a valued and dedicated cardiologist who often uses his work as a way to escape from dealing with his anguished life. He lives alone, still closeted and unable to break through the walls and defenses built around him since the death of his lover. Yossi tries to find love in all the wrong places while trying to keep his gay lifestyle private. He travels to the southern city of Eilat. Surrounded by sea and sand dunes he meets a group of young Israeli IDF officers. Among them is Tom, a handsome and self-confident openly gay man, who represents a new world that differs from the one that shaped Yossi. This chance meeting sends him on a journey to find peace, relaxation, and the possibility of opening himself up to true love. Funny, smart, and thought provoking. Although South Africa’s constitution outlaws discrimination against gays and lesbians, the legacy of Apartheid and sexism and homophobia continues to present challenges to the women captured by Muholi’s photography. Her images document poverty, rape and murder and other hardships they face, but also the beauty and love in the lives of her subjects. Yolanda and Mari are growing up in the Huntington Park neighborhood of Los Angeles and have only known loyalty to one thing: family. Growing up in immigrant households, both girls are expected to prioritize the wellbeing of their families. Yolanda, an only child, delivers straight A’s and the hope of the American dream while Mari, the eldest, shares economic responsibilities with her undocumented family who scrambles to make ends meet. When Mari moves in across the street from Yolanda, they maintain their usual routine until an incident at school thrusts them into a friendship and into unknown territory. As their friendship grows, a yearning to explore their strange yet beautiful connection surfaces. i want your love Q ŵÑ/Å>ä ÈÑ >ÓÓ iåÈÑUÑ1- ÑUÑÛí§§ÑUÑÌ§Ñ ÈR After the raw delight of John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus and the stark honesty of Andrew Haigh’s Weekend, Travis Matthews has now emerged the newest voice in fringe queer cinema with I Want Your Love. After a decade in San Francisco, Jesse’s 20s are over. The 30-year old, broke artist reluctantly decides to return home to Ohio to get his aimless life back on track. With only two days before his departure, his good friends plan and throw him a party. Meanwhile this eminent upheaval causes Jesse to reflect and perhaps wrap up some loose ends, especially with his ex, Ben. The guys in his circle explore carnal and emotional intimacy in various configurations, leaving nothing to the imagination. Although produced by porn studio, Nakedsword, the many completely unsimulated, sexually graphic liaisons are not gratuitously hardcore, but subtly augment character and milieu. The multiracial, transgenerational cast members are adept at using real sex to bolster the portrayals of convincing individuals, not merely concocting clichés. The actors are not gay porn stereotypes, but are real men. Charmingly scruffy and inked, they exude a fresh eroticism. Travis Matthews’ direction gracefully strips away a behavioral veneer and exposes the common desire to share and hold on to love. — DAVID GECKLE, FILM PROGRAMMER

Entry Denied seamlessly weaves together the poignant stories of 3 same-sex inter-national couples, and their individual struggles against US government immigration rules in order to gain legitimacy for their relationships and hang on to their coupleship. John and Shaun met on the internet, and once Shaun travelled from Britain to meet John in California, they soon became a couple. However, visa requirements that Shaun go back to the UK periodically, hampered their plans, and soon the INS had flagged Shaun for extensive interrogation, whenever he attempted to re-enter the US. Jenny and Nicky met as actors in a local theater production, where a shortage of male cast members forced Nicky to play husband to Jenny. Their friendship blossomed, and soon they learned that Nicky’s au pair visa from South Africa had severe limitations. They tried numerous avenues for relief, and even considered having a gay friend marry Nicky as a means to her green card. Ultimately, they must choose between staying in the US or remaining a couple. Lastly, Mel was an American on holiday in Amsterdam in the late 70’s when he fell for Geert, a local man. They develop a friendship and ultimately a strong partnership, which blossoms, once Geert accompanies Mel back to the States. After almost 2 decades together, their tranquil nest is shaken when a mandated physical reveals that Geert is HIV positive. This forces the couple to fight for green card relief and curtails Geert’s ability to leave and re-enter the country. He and Mel weigh tough choices about emigration due to family obligations against the prospect of not being able to live together in the US. — TODD LOWENBURG, FILM PROGRAMMER

the queen has no crown ImmEDIAtELY FOLLOWINg Q ŵÑ/ iÅÑ iç > ÑUÑ ÈÅ>i ÑUÑÛí§§ÑUÑnÛÑ È iLÅiåÑå Ó Ñ È ÑÈÞLÓ Ó iÈR “The Queen Has No Crown” is Tomer Heymann’s poignant meditation on family, loss, and the mental maps of homelessness. The film navigates the intimate lives of 5 brothers and their mother, as they experience the pains of exile and the joys of family bonding. Three of the Heymann sons take their families and leave Israel, one after the other, for “better” lives in America. They fulfill their dreams, but shatter those of their mother. A divorcee, she is left alone in Israel with her two bachelor sons — one straight, and the other, Tomer, gay. Exploring the politics of belonging, displacement, and sexuality, the film examines the hard decisions one family has to make, and the intractable bonds that unite them in the face of difficult life choices. Throughout, Tomer frames this quest in terms of its greater social and political significance: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, tensions between Israel’s Arabs and Jews, its secular and ultra-orthodox citizens, and the struggle for gay/human rights. Tomer, combining 8 and 16mm footage with his own work of a decade, shows how the strength of the Heymann Family depends on forces greater than the nuclear family itself. The result, “The Queen Has No Crown”, is a powerful and intimate portrait of one man, his family, and the world surrounding them. — TODD LOWENBURG, FILM PROGRAMMER
