Rare interviews with illegal immigrants brings to light: US complicity in creating Latin America’s extreme inequality, the devastating impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement on millions of Mexican peasants, the militarization of the US / Mexican border in anticipation of those displacements, the US’s socially-encoded dual legal entry system which discriminates against poor and / or indigenous people, the legal exception of the guest worker program which is a system of indentured servitude, and the deaths of thousands of illegally-crossing migrants along our southwestern border.

Shelter Island resident and ‘outsider’ artist Harald Olson share his eclectic tastes with Jimmy Olinkiewicz, a blue-collar gas station owner. The film follows their amazing journey from selling paintings alongside a picket fence to a major showing at a Chelsea art gallery in Manhattan. Jim becomes the embodiment of all that was once good in the business world — a small business owner who makes decisions not because they necessarily lead to profit, but simply because it’s the right thing to do. As the father of an autistic child, he’s also “paying it forward” by helping the “outsider” Harald find his way to success and happiness. Harald Olson, on the other hand, is the personification of ART. He is consumed with painting, sometimes going in 72 hours stretches where he “forgets” to eat. Money has almost no value to him, as his clothing and painting materials are found in the town dump. In conversation, Harald does his best to make small talk, but eventually every conversation returns obsessively to one about the process of painting and creating art. Plays with The Unseen Beauty Michael Canzoniero is an award-winning filmmaker (“Wedding Bros.”, 2008 SXSW Film Festival.) A graduate of the New York University Film School, Michael’s film work has played at over fifty film festivals including Sundance, Hamptons, Toronto and Edinburgh. In 2009, Michael was a co-producer on “Hysterical Psycho” (Tribeca 2009) and Post-Production Supervisor on the 2010 IndySpirit nominee “Lbs.” His original comedy project “The Real Calypso” was optioned by producers Aaron Kaplan (“You, Me and Dupree”) and Alan Riche (“Bride Wars”) and attached veteran show-runner Matthew Harrigan (“Celebrity Death Match”, “Family Guy”).
