HEADSPACE SWAN HILL A B OU T U S headspace Swan Hill delivers FREE youth-friendly services to young people aged 12-25, and is a part of an Australia–wide network of headspace centres, aimed to help young people and their families and friends. headspace Swan Hill provides early intervention services to encourage help seeking behaviour and avoid ongoing issues. mental health can lead to significant effects Did you know: Good on a young person’s functioning and development. • Enhanced emotional wellbeing can be associated with marked improvement in social, occupational and academic performance. • Additionally, good mental health can be a safeguard against the detrimental effects of mental health disorders and the longer term effects, dysfunctions and disadvantages that can go on into adulthood if left untreated during adolescence. • Untreated or poor mental health can increase the risk of intentional self-harm and suicide. In fact, the leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 15-24 years is suicide. • Studies have shown that young females are around twice as likely as males to meet the criteria for having a probable serious mental illness.

THE GOOD NEWS

L & NE AL B

ALL TB

FOOT

Good mental health can be achieved and maintained, the same way in which dental and sleep hygiene can be improved with practice. headspace is here to help, with a team of mental health professionals.

• 62 per cent of the total young people (12 – 25 years) who accessed headspace centres in the 2019-20 financial year were female, and only 36 per cent male. • Within that cohort, one in seven aged between 16 and 24 will experience depression or anxiety each year - yet only 13% of young men in that age range seek help. • Males and females may need to seek help with different concerns. Gender differences have been found in mental health issues among young people aged 15-19. Females have reported high levels of concern for body image, while males have demonstrated higher depression.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT It’s as simple as hopping on our website headspace. org.au/headspace-centres/swan-hill/ and completing a self-referral, or you can free call us on 1800 975 115, email us at headspace@shdh.org.au or just drop in. You can also ask a friend, parent or other family member, friend, teacher, health worker or community agency to contact headspace for you. You will usually get to meet with one of our friendly staff face-to-face within two weeks.

5. Stay active

Staying active can help you to sleep better, manage stress and boost your mood. Find a way to keep active that you enjoy and incorporate this into your regular routine.

6. Get enough sleep

7. Cut back on alcohol and other drugs

Curbing the amount of alcohol and other drugs that you use (or avoiding alcohol and drugs altogether) will help you manage your emotions better and improve your wellbeing.

Great day out for our Interleague girls at the Netball Vic Northern Zone Association Championship Qualifiers last Sunday! All teams made it through to finals, with Under 17’s falling just short in the semi’s, Under 15’s going down in a close grand final and the Under 13’s coming away with top honours! Well done to all the girls! These results mean that the Under 13’s and Under 15’s have secured a spot in the Association Championship Finals in Melbourne on August 1st, which is a fantastic achievement! We look forward to seeing the girls back in action in a few weeks. Unfortunately, Under 17’s did not qualify for finals, so are now done with Interleague for the Season; we thank them for their hard work and commitment and wish them luck back at club level for the remainder of the year - a big thank you also goes to all the parents/ guardians/siblings/friends for ensuring they got to training and games! Felicity Robertson and Meghan Hall took on the role of coaching, and we thank them immensely for their support of the program – we appreciate your dedication to developing the future of the League!

NYAH NYAH WEST UNITED J U LY 3 VS T Y N T Y N D E R Now, we start over again. This week we venture into town to take on Tyntynder where we will be looking to build on our good form against Lake Boga and get a few more wins on the board. Congratulations to Ash Thompson on finally getting his 250th club game last round – a legend of our club. FOOTBALL RESULTS Seniors: NNWU 17.6.108 defeated Lake Boga 8.11.59 The Seniors game was an even contest in the first half with only 1 point separating the teams at the main break. After half time though, especially in the third quarter, we clicked into gear and got our game going, playing some of our best footy for the year. We need to bring that same effort and intensity for the whole game this week against a very good Tyntynder side. If we do, I’m sure good things will happen. Best players: Zac Threadgold, Brent Arho, Brady Davidson, Joel Campbell, Corey Daniels, Jaydyn Stirling. Specialised Fitness Award – Zac Threadgold Players Player Award – Brady Davidson Reserves: NNWU 16.6.102 defeated Lake Boga 10.4.64 This was an even game for much of the day, apart from 10 minutes in the second quarter where we were able to kick a few quick goals against the breeze to build a good lead. From here, we were able to maintain that lead to record a good win. Doey’s Meats Award – Bradley Shepherd; Tasco Award – Cameron Henson; Grand Hotel Award – Nick Greaves; Drover Contracting – Jacob Pitts; Swan Hill Pool & Spa and Swan Hill Garage Doors Most Determined – Tim O’Brien. Colts: NNWU 13.5.83 defeated by Lake Boga 16.11.107 The Colts were up against it against the best Colts side in the league. Despite this, the boys acquitted themselves well, being very competitive for most of the game. Unfortunately, the game got away in the last quarter and a bit and it didn’t make for good reading on the scoreboard. However, there were plenty of positives to take out of the game. Murray’s Incentive 1 – Oliver Boulton; Murray’s Incentive 2 – Harry

Shadbolt; Pizza Kitchen – Mathew Molloy; Town & Country – Noah Everitt; Nutrien Ag Solutions 1 – Kaiden Pierce; Nutrien Ag Solutions Hat – Charlie Boulton. Under 14.5: NNWU 10.12.72 defeated Lake Boga 6.5.41 The Under 14.5’s game was a good contest, with both sides playing some very good football. V & S Andrews – Zak O’Shannassy; Coaches Endeavour – Zac Sutton; Koraleigh Store – Korben Bird; Trainers Award – Murndarr McInnes; Subway – Oaklea Bird. Under 12: NNWU vs Lake Boga Our youngest footballers came up against their toughest competition yet. As coach Ash said to them, every week is a chance to learn something new. Coaches Award – Maverick Bird; Koraleigh Store – Mityen McInnes; Growtek – Jarrah Edge; Classic Fish Shop – Zac Whimpress; Subway – Jase Thomson NETBALL RESULTS A mixed day on the netball courts with a couple of wins sprinkled in amongst some tough games. A Grade: NNWU 41 Lake Boga 65 Best player: Madi Jones A Res: NNWU 32 Lake Boga 37 Best player: Bridie Curran B Grade: NNWU 47 Lake Boga 31 Best player: Gemma Flanagan B Res: NNWU 38 Lake Boga 32 Best player: Kristy Shadbolt & Zoe Smith Under 16: NNWU 17 Lake Boga 67 Best player: Elle Richardson Under 14: NNWU 19 Lake Boga 44 Best players: Holly Thomson Under 12: NNWU 8 Lake Boga 24 Best players: Charlotte Severino & Makenna McKenzie Good luck to all football and netball teams today.

KERANG J U LY 3 VS KO O N D RO O K BA R H A M This week sees us go back in time to Round 7 where we finally get to Host the much anticipated game against the Raiders. Our clubs have a long history of close and exciting matches against each other. Tonight after the game the Senior Players are hosting their IPOD Shuffle & Games night so lets make sure everyone supports the Boys and the club and heads upstairs to enjoy a fantastic night. Under 14.5’s A Great win by the boys, Well done to all players. No Awards list had been handed in but the best players were: L. McAlpin, Harry Bremner, D. Threlfall, Z. Thamm, J. Boswell, J. Johnston-Wyntjes. Colts: A good win by the colts although some extra practice on kicking straight would definitely help things heading towards finals. $10 Award : Jonah McKnight, Zorba’s Pizza : Tyson Clingan, Sportspower: Mason Dibsdale Woodbox ; Darcy Murphu, Cruz Barbers : Caleb Hall, Pizza Kitchen : Bohden McKnight, Woolworths : Ryan Trevorrow. Reserves: A much closer game this week for the Ressies but they continued on their winning way. A good team effort with a spread of goal kickers sees the boys in good form so far this season. Best Players: Jotham Higgs, Logan Tuohey, Cody Tuohey, Lachy Hall, Alex Lloyd and Mat Coates.

Seniors:

Under 18’s

The Seniors played a more consistent 4 quarters this week and ended up having a comfortable win against the Bulldogs. The side looks much stronger and cohesive with a fit Truck Davis on the ground

Great team effort to control the game each quarter. Tyntynder took it to the Blues in the last quarter but the girls took it in their stride and came out the winners. This week’s awards went to; Tara Cordina, Paula Ellis and Abbey Pay.

Netball Under 12’s Great talk and ball movement all the way down the court Laela had a fantastic game in defence, picking up all the loose balls. Awards: Laela Grayling, Macey Hall and Keira Wise. Under 14’s Well sadly our winning streak is over. Changes to the team as Kobie was sick so Lil stepped up to help out. Brookie came off hurt in the 3rd quarter and our little star Chloe came on. Our girls played much better and managed to even the score until the last few minutes of the last quarter. Awards: Jamison Wise, Chloe Meehan and Alli Hunter. Under 16’s A great win for the girls today. A great team effort and they all played well as a team. This week’s awards went to; Jorja Gibson, Kaylee Shipp, Gabi Davis and Sophie Hunter.

MALLEE EAGLES J U LY 3 VS BA L R A N A L D What a great day out at Lalbert it was last Saturday! Many were left wondering when was the last time both our A Grade Netballers and Senior Footballers defeated Woorinen on the same day? As we have done all year, we managed to win more than we lost across all games, with so many of our teams currently sitting in finals contention. Two special mentions – 1. the U16 netballers for their one goal win, nothing like it for testing the heart health of our supporters. 2. How good was it to see young first gamer Harry McGregor in the middle of the circle as the senior boys belted out the club song. The highlight of the day was clearly “Lady’s Day”. A great fund-raising event that supports the district in which we live by donating all money’s raised to Swan Hill District Health Cancer Services. We should be proud that our sporting club based community does more than only think about ourselves, and every cent raised will help someone in some way! I have heard the amount raised is $3,500 – Congratulations to everyone concerned. Well organized, well attended and well supported! The girls looked great in their pink uniforms on the courts and even better as they glammed up for the afternoon event. Can I say a huge THANK YOU to everyone and anyone that helped out on the day. From the ladies who organized the function area next to the Corporate Box, including all the sponsors who supported this worthy cause, to the blokes who turned up as rostered and helped run the Canteen. To the ladies who still did their bit in the Canteen

even though it was their day. To the team managers and volunteers who organized the pink netball uniforms and pink football socks, not just giving them out but collecting them after the game, making sure they all get washed and stored away until next year. To the Bar staff for helping to set up a mini bar area with full Esky’s to make sure the girls stay hydrated 😊 To the Gents who did the cooking on the BBQ after the senior game had finished. On a lighter note: Proud Mum Paula McGregor was asked before the game if she was going to take a photo of the 3 McGregor Boys, (Tom, Darcy and Harry) all playing seniors together for the first time. Mum was a bit too nervous, saying her hands were shaking too much! Don’t worry Mum, hopefully it won’t be long before you have all 4 boys playing together, now that will be a great photo! With the CMFNL draw changed because of the Covid break, we enter our second home game in a row, away to Swan Hill, then have two more home games. So please watch out for rosters and be prepared to help out when asked. Home games are fun, but only if everyone chips in to make it that way. This week we host Balranald. As I write this I cross my fingers that Covid does not do to NSW what it did to Victoria and generally stuff things up! There is a lot of anticipation for one game in particular, the top of the table A Grade Netball clash. Seriously, how good is it to see Mallee Eagles and Balranald mentioned in this way and not the usual big three that have dominated for years.

TOOLEYBUC-MANANGATANG J U LY 3 VS L A K E B O GA For the second week in a row the action will be at Manang as we welcome Lake Boga in what shapes as an exciting day of footy. Today’s match day sponsor is Grant’s Seedgrading & the club thanks Pat & Colleen for their generous support again this year. It was a mixed day for our footy teams last weekend with the seniors putting up a spirited performance against the Raiders in the end going down by 5 goals. Best players – Ben Sheridan, Tom Carland, Zdenek Hostalek, Murray Ogle, John Wardle, Justin Cooper. Mallee Physio – Murray Ogle. 3 goals from Alex Norton & a best on ground performance by Shaun Hon were not quite enough to get the ressies over the line in what was an entertaining contest. Awards: Tooleybuc Sporting Club – Shaun Hon, Swan Hill Packaging –Nick Murphy, Mallee Physio – John Chislett, Amaretto Almonds – Ryan O’Shannassy.

continuing to show massive improvement. Awards: JA Electrical – Seth Linford, Pearsons Grain – Josh Burford, West Farmers Insurance – Jett Funnell, Subway – Ashby Rogers. The U12’s once again played a great game which included plenty of standout efforts. Awards: GoFarm – Tyler & Charlie, Truck Specialist – Campbell, Pearsons Grain – Jasper, Subway – Noah, Pizza Kitchen - Lucas. And the latest Manang Hotel Auskick award went to George Muir. Netball: It was celebrations all around for the women of Tooleybuc-Manangatang last weekend! Melanie Henson continues to ensure that our Under 12’s are working hard on playing in front, applying strong defensive pressure and chasing down lose balls. Alyssa worked hard in the centre, delivering the ball down the court and taking numerous turnovers.

With the aid of a few nyah boys the colts put in another really strong 4 quarter effort to make it 2 wins on the trot. Awards: Mallee Physio - Ryan Domaille, WFI – Mitch Grinham, Sunrise Ag – Mackie Rogers, Pooles & Associates – Lex Wilson.

Ange Spinks and Taylen Blachford are encouraging high morale, excellent teamwork, physicality and strong defensive pressure from our 14’s. Awards to Olivia Fowler and Ally Grace for their tireless work in defence.

The U14’s put in arguably the best performance of the day with everyone

Haylea Hazlett is set on taking her 16’s all the way! Another victory this week, 58-13, sees

them sitting in third on the ladder. And if you want to see all cylinders firing, go and watch B Reserve and listen for Mereeka Andrews on the sideline. The girls played some good netball this week, regardless of a height deficit! Keira Edo received the main award for her work in goals, with the assistance of Rachael. Jess received the coaches award for her awesome effort in defence. Nat Plant and Jess Budde are seeing many positive signs in their B Grade side. It was an even game right until the end against KB. Awards to Rach Grace in WA for feeding the goalies beautifully and to Tara Matthews for playing strong in her first game in C. Zoe Fuller described her A Grade side’s performance this week as “a really impressive fight back where we never let it get away from us, where we ran over the top in the end. It was great to get the four points!” Peyton Oliver played a blinder in WD, cutting off leads all day. And while A Res did not take to the court, they did enjoy the wonderful Ladies Day that their coach, Peyto, put together in such short notice.

LAKE BOGA J U LY 3 VS TO O L EY BUC M A N AGATA N G MAGPIE NATION!

A Res – LB 40 drew wit Balranald 40

The bubble has burst, the wait is over, the Seniors boys bought home the bacon in euphoric scenes at Greenham Park. The excitement was at ever pitch and the song was sang by all in attendance at both Balranald and Kyalite. But it wasn’t the only positive for the day, our club again shone brightly like the sun in the winter sky!

What a match this was with just a one goal lead going into the last quarter we were unable to hold our lead with the match ending in a draw.

U12’s- Another game of improvement by an impressive outfield, winning again comprehensively. Best were- Sonny Barry, Matt Haines, Emerson Doolan, Heily, Ryker Klomp and young Snake U14.5’s- Fought out an enthralling game right done to the wire, still threatening in the last 3 minutes to snatch the game form an older and wiser opposition. Best were- Kel Mulligan, Gus Tonkin, Harry Brown, Kai Everett, Bully, Noah Noble, Harry Bryan and Barnesy No Colts Game Reserves- Team steaming ahead on destination finals. Another solid performance and the team seems to be bonding into a colossus outfit. Best were- Clearly Trippy, Chayse Tonkin, Hayesy, Horse, Nick Higginbottom and power forward Bully Seniors- With spectators buoyant and seeing a win being evitable, the boys delivered in spades. Responding to coaches instructions and lead home by senior players they racked up their first win for many a day. Solid uncompromising effort and execution of consistent football rewarded the club with victory. Best Were- Gus Monfries, Crooksy, Dog, Dinga, Frosty and Johnno with may other mentionable performances by teammates that rounded off fantastic team effort. Netball Results A Grade – LB 38 def by Balranald 52 Our girls came up against the top team in the competition and despite giving their all they were unable to reduce the margin in the final term.

B Grade – LB 34 d Balranald 29 A great win for the team with the girls leading at every break as the Roos tried to make a last quarter comeback. However they stay strong and won the game by 5 B Res – LB 58 d Balranald 31 Congratulations to the team for your first win. And what a win with second quarter showering of goals of 21 for the quarter. Let’s try and make it two in a row. 18 & U – LB 21 def by Balranald 60 Our opponents proved far too strong from the start and it was going to be a game of catch up. However to the girl’s credit, they kept working hard throughout the game till the final bell. 16 & U – LB 41 d Balranald 23 The difference was just 9 at half time and as the girls held their opponents to just 3 goals in the third quarter, a convincing win of 18 goals was the final margin. 14 & U – LB 44 d Balranald 33 With a strong start to the game, our girls were able to maintain the pressure and increase their lead to win the game by 10. 12 & U – No Game We head up to Manang full of confidence for victories on the court and on the field. Now we are on a roll, let’s ride this baby for the rest of the season.

SWAN HILL J U LY 3 VS WO O R I N E N Thanks to Cohuna Kangas for hosting us last week. Was plenty of great action on the field and court. A number of our social events have required change but our next function is set: • Saturday July 10 – the return of “Ladies Day”. A day where all the SHFNC ladies can get together and enjoy each other’s company. $50 – all inclusive ticket with giveaways and door prizes. A day not to be missed – tickets are selling fast – please see Karla Reed for your ticket. Results last week against the Kangas: Netball The U12 side had a big win against the Kangas. The Brooks sisters were the award winners with Lana (Subway) and Zoe (McDonalds) the better players. The under 14 side competed well but just went down to the Kangas. Award winners Issie Angus (Subway) and Alana Gracia (Oizza kitchen). The under 16 side also battled well but Cohuna were just a bit strong in the end. The 218 award went to Maeve Sheldrick. The under 18 side played one of their best matches of the year and in the end having a good win. Award winners Tess Meney (SHFNC) and Hope Fitzpatrick (Beauty Spot). B Reserve were well beaten by Cohuna however we wish Mel Bennett all the best in her recovery from an achilles injury. Award winners Emma Doherty (Beauty Spot) and Milan McDonald (SHFNC). B Grade had a convincing win against the Kangas last week. Congratulations to Charlotte Angus who played her first senior game. Award winners Sophie Reed (Paper Scissors Rock) and Karen Thamm (SHFNC). A reserve also had

one of their best matches for the year and consolidated their spot in the 5. Award winners Lauren Thoolen (Paper Scissors Rock) and Julia Amezdroz (Megan Kelly Massage). The a grade side were very impressive against the Kangas last week which would have pleased coach Zoe. Award winners Alivia Andrews (Clubroom) and Arlee Bennett (Bean Hopper). Football The U12s came up a taller Kangas side but performed very well. Award winners Jimmy Kelly (McDonalds), Zac Robertson (Kip McGrath), Elijah Ray (Canteen), Max Renda (Thurs Night Meal), Finn Hufer (Senior Football). The U14.5 played the 3rd side and after a close first half pulled away in the second half to win well. Awards Paddy Hufer (Thurs Night Meal), Sonny Beasy (Seniors), Sasch Retsas (Canteen), Lachie Vroljiks (Pearsons), Hugh Langley Sheldrick (McDonalds), and Cody McIntyre (Pioneer). The colts had a win!! The colts were very excited with their first win of the season. Well done as the team have worked very hard. Award winners Taj McMillan (Seniors), Campbell Kelly (Pearsons), Jem Sibley (Pizza Kitchen), Buol Majur (Thus Night Meal), Darby Meney (Canteen), and Akasha Jaiswal (Cruz). The Swan Hill reserves ran out of a bit of steam and went down to the Kangas last week. Beer club award to Matt Batternally. The seniors got the early jump on the Kangas but Cohuna were just a bit too skillful and strong during the second and third quarters but the margin in the end didn’t reflect the game. Beer club award went to Matt Wade. Another big challenge against the Tigers today but the boys will be ready for it. Good luck to all sides today!

COHUNA KANGAS J U LY 3 BY E NETBALL 12 & Under Kangas 0 lost to Swan Hill 26 An unfortunate game for the girls today. We were unable to put a score on the scoreboard today. However, they showed excellent defence through the whole court. 14 & Under Kangas 32 def Swan Hill 23 The girls jumped ahead with some great play and we built on the lead to come out winners for the second week in a row. Charli played a fantastic game thru the centre. Elley played extremely well at WA and WD. Summah listened to all instructions and played a strong defensive game. 16 & Under Kangas 47 def Swan Hill 39 A hard fought game in hard conditions. The conditions saw us make silly errors, making it tough to find our feet. Goalies worked hard to find the body to protect our space. Defenders rebounded well and our mids ran hard all day. 18 & Under Kangas 25 lost to Swan Hill 41 Girls started off strong to see them equal at the first break. Swan Hill got a run on and we couldn’t quite catch back up. Defensive pressure was outstanding all game with a lot

of hands to balls. Overall, a tough game but the girls kept their heads. B Reserve Kangas 70 def Swan Hill 23 With goalies shooting at 100% we had a commanding lead going into the second quarter. We got nine players on court and we kept playing a very disciplined game and got better and better. B Grade Kangas 26 lost to Swan Hill 47 Great strong game vs a top 5 side. We worked hard and showed a lot of determination this week. Final score didn’t reflect this. Well done girls. A Reserve Kangas 33 lost to Swan Hill 68 A tough game, Swans were superfast. We adjusted to change well, kept fighting till the end and kept our heads high. Well done girls. A Grade Kangas 38 lost to Swan Hill 70 Outclassed by a great team. Amy Mathers worked hard all game in the mid court and Keely Wilson was strong in goals. FOOTBALL SENIORS – COHUNA KANGAS 17.12.114 v SWAN HILL 10.4.64 A month has passed since our last home game and inaccuracies saw the boys down by two points at quarter time. A second term saw a definite improvement keeping six goals to two which saw a

halftime lead of 24 points the second half then saw our team run away with a 50 point win against a strong opponent. RESERVES – COHUNA KANGAS 11.10.76 v SWAN HILL 5.4.24 Injury the Scott Alden first minutes and off the rest of the game great weather for football tough first half before the boys started to get on top. Four goals in the third quarter changed it up for Cohuna. COLTS – COHUNA KANGAS 3.7.25 v SWAN HILL 5.10.40 A great team effort today with the Colts only going down by 15 points at the final siren. Despite another loss the boys continued to improve and with some kids playing in different positions their personal games lift to higher levels both in fitness level as well as their skills level too. U14.5 – COHUNA KANGAS 5.7.37 v SWAN HILL 11.5.71 Good start to the game with both teams going out hard for the ball, with scores pretty even. Second half Cohuna were tired and Swan Hill’s fitness kicked in and smashed Cohuna on the scoreboard. Under 12’s No Notes provided

GOLDEN RIVERS FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

65 / HOME

Great day out for our Interleague girls at the Netball Vic Northern Zone Association Championship Qualifiers last Sunday – a few mixed results but a fantastic day regardless of outcomes; the girls should all be proud of what they have achieved! Unfortunately, there were no Golden Rivers teams that qualified for finals, so we are now done with Interleague for the Season; we thank all the girls for their hard work and commitment and wish them luck back at club level for the remainder of the year a big thank you also goes to all the parents/guardians/siblings/friends for ensuring everyone got to training and games! We would also like to acknowledge those that took on coaching roles – Jasmine Morris, Erica Cummins, Jenna Wild and Meg Hogan – we appreciate your dedication to developing the future of the League and thank you immensely for your support of the program! We look forward to seeing everyone back for next year’s Interleague program!

MACORNA TIGERS J U LY 3 VS U LT I M A FTroop - This week the girls did an amazing job once again, they have improved so much with their foot work and also their defensive skills have grown so much and you could see that in this game. Keep it up girls. U14 – It was a pleasure to watch our U14 girls play this week. We knew it would be tough game against a strong opposition, but they didn’t let that get to them and as a team played the best that we’ve seen. Awards went to Miley, Kiera and Zoe. U17 – The girls new it was going to be a tough game, but they came out with fire in their belly and had Nully scared in the first quarter, but we just couldn’t keep up the momentum. Thanks to Tiff for giving the girls a great pep talk at half time to get them going again. Awards: Ang & Tahlia. Bres - The girls may not have got the win against Nully but as team we improved so much from the last time we played them. Not one of the girls dropped their head and gave up throughout the game. Kass and Robyn. B grade - A really tough game but the girls played it in true B Grade style… enjoying every minute! Leah had the whole team rally around her as she took her first goal. Lee debuted and fitted into the group perfectly. There were so many BD’s and lots of laughs. Awards: Lee Hardie, Sherri Sutherland A grade - This week we were sluggish from the start. Maybe it was the cold weather or the fact we played Nully at Nully but we played a little bit slower and worse for wear today. Not our best game and we made Nully look good.

Fourth – Well done a great team effort against Nully. We showed a touch of class, the want for the ball was evident and skills were improved on from last week. Players linking together and sweeping handballs were again a highlight. Best on & awards went to: Sam Whinfield, Deakin Smith, Jaxson O’Rourke, Oakley Tonkin Thirds – The lads took on Nully last week and they showed great skill and discipline for the duration of the game. Going in undermanned gave players opportunity to play out of position, strengthening our depth. Both U14s players, Cooper and Sam showed promising signs for the future. Awards: Will Robinson, Ryan Dee & Liam Mathers. Reserves – The lads were up against a class side today. Unfortunately we were always 2 steps behind. We will regroup and remember that raw talent doesn’t always get you over the line, you need to work harder for your teammates and be committed. Awards: Hayden Tyler, Paul Lacy, Mark Carter. Seniors –We came out and had the game on our terms for the most part and really put pressure around the ball with Jessi leading from the front and Carrots giving us a lively target up forward. Unfortunately, we went into half time with most our shots being points but the effort and the key areas Stiz has been training for over the last month were on display. Second half we were well served by Josh, Stiz and Jake Macca but we just weren’t able to keep the pressure on for the entire game letting a very strong Nully side run away with an easy win on the scoreboard in the end. Awards: Jake, Josh & Haff

Ultima 38 Moulamein 41

Ultima 14 Moulamein 3

The girls had a really close game again, having good patches of play, but unfortunately we couldn’t keep it going for the full game and couldn’t get on top of them. It was pleasing that we didn’t give up. Awards went to Keeley and Trine who were very consistent and fought hard.

Awesome game today with a win. Defensive pressure across the whole court was amazing. Keep it up girls. Awards went to Ivy Frost and Macklyn Hender. 14&Under Ultima 57 Moulamein 17 Great to see some of the girls trying new positions. We have a very versatile team. Congratulations Scarlett, Indi and Findlay on receiving awards yesterday. B Reserve Ultima 45 Moulamein 34 Another great game to watch for B Res. The girls were able to put together some really brilliant bits of play. We were able to adjust some things during the game that were slightly lacking and fix them on the go, which was great to see. With 6 weeks left of the home and away season we’re playing the sort of netball that I think all of the girls can be proud of.

A Grade Ultima 55 Moulamein 47 After 4 weeks off netball the girls were ready to get out on the court and have some fun. Injuries and lockdown meant this was the first time our attacking end got to play together and it worked amazingly with Jac and Tess setting up the shooters all game. Grace’s shooting accuracy was next level. It was a constant slog with us getting ahead by a few, then Moulamein fighting back, but the girls showed great composure to hang on and get a great win. Awards went to Grace, Jac and Fliss.

HAY LIONS J U LY 3 VS M OU L A M E I N Hay vs Murrabit (26/06/2021) A Grade Murrabit 69 def Hay 17 Murrabit, the competition leaders in A grade won 69 – 17 although the score doesn’t reflect the Hay’s girls effort on court. Hay played a tight one on one game for the first quarter that worked well and tried a few different combinations in centre court that provided fresh legs. Murrabit used their speed through the mid court and tall defensive players capitalised on any loose passes to push out their lead. Ellie Jamieson (Ian Bunyan Plumbing Players Player and Hay Bowling & Golf Club Best on Court) played consistently in defence applying pressure and intercepting. She was supported well by Olivia Joyce (L Houston Consulting Coaches Award) who gained her mo-jo in the second half with intercepts and pressure on the ball. B Grade Murrabit 69 def Hay 15 Hay started the game with some great plays and worked well down the court, however Murrabit’s experience and well-drilled plays were too good for Hay this week. Jasmine Gregory (Hay Bowling & Golf Club Best on Court) played another spectacular game in defence. Teagan Morrison (Tantrum Hair and Beauty Players’ Player) played strongly in Hay’s attack. Chloe Arandt (Coach’s Award) defended with determination and made some great intercepts.

saw Murrabit respond and narrow the Lions lead to 3, in a high scoring quarter, with Alice Caldow (The Spot Award) providing great defence and rebound out. The last quarter saw Skye Lilburne (Hay Newsagency Award) who had dominated in the air at GS all game, continue that form and keep the scoring coming to assist with the girls first win of the season. Under 14’s Hay 32 Murrabit 23 This game started off nail biting as both teams were offering their best considering the condition of the court, ending the first half Hay 12 Murrabit 4. Sienna Lund (Highway Inn Motel Award) and Genevieve Williamson (Guts and Determination Award) worked well together shooting beautifully and working well as a team. After a few injuries, Hay started to move the ball safely down the court and getting valuable intercepts which brightened up the game. Matilda Nesbit (Peter Mullins Building Award) started off in the ring but shortly moved into the mid court where she showed her vital position in the team. Emily Caughey and Sophie Tapper worked together brilliantly defending and getting rebounds where Laila Wilson, Kodi Scott and Lucy Davies worked courageously together moving the ball down the court and feeding well into the ring.

Under 17’s Hay 31 def Murrabit 28

F Troop Today the girls played a great game with some fantastic teamwork and great communication. Unfortunately we lost 24-4 but they all left with smiles on their faces. Award winners were Prue Rutledge (Active Farmers) and Giselle Gill (Ricks Parks and Gardens).

The first quarter saw a real arm wrestle with both teams battling hard in a low scoring period. The second quarter saw the Lions build momentum as they took a half time lead of 15 to 10, with Janee Davies (Hay Calisthenics Award) getting the ball into the ring from WA with some great movement. The third quarter

Hay Red vs Hay Blue Very close game with Hay Reds taking the win 9-7. Again these girls show promise working well together and developing great skills each game. Award winners Jessica Tapper (Ricks Parks and Gardens) and Bonnie Matthews (Lions Canteen).

MURRABIT J U LY 3 VS Q UA M BATO O K Footy Sam Copland and Riley Carse was dominant all over the field. Cooper Hein impressed and once again some quality finishing by Ryleigh Wilkinson with 5 goals. Award Winners: Sam Copland (Kerang Electronics), Riley Carse (R&B McNeil), Jack Keath (AB Building), Kye McKerrow (Subway) Our 3rds continue to have a sustained effort for the full 4 quarters, Jordan McNeil returned from Senior duties and lead from the front with his clean ball movement and pace. Archer and Ben too showed the development of our juniors has been heading in the right direction. Award Winners: Fee Khongphueng (McKnight & Bray), Riley Carse (Coaches), Noah Shea (D&J Hein), Thomas Leahy (John Morrow) & Kevin (Subway). The Reserves continued their strong form and with the return of some key players were able to kick away with 13 goals between Kaine and Buddha. Award Winners: Kaine O’Connell (Greg Dickson), Max Hartley (CluBarham), Neil Teasdale (Sh’Marnas Place) & Rylan Delamare (Car Wash) It seems the story stays the same for the second half of the season, close but no win. A great second and third quarter held the seniors in a strong position but alas once again a close loss. Ben Gillingham should have enough Mystic vouchers now to feed a small army. Ashton Wood playing his first senior game applied plenty of pressure. Award Winners: Matt Robinson (Royal Hotel), Ben Gillingham (Mystic Park Hotel) & Ashton Wood (Elders Barham). Netball Under 12 awards: Most discipline – Macy Bray, Eliza Maher, Subway – Ella Henry, Maddi Keath, Spitty lollies – Georgia Carse, Drinker – Lexie McKnight.

The under 14 girls played well but a slow second quarter saw the game jump a bit out of their reach. Emmity Hartley (JMM socks) was strong in defence, picking off any loose balls and rebounds while Immy Cummins (Lake Charm salt $5) was shooting nicely. The 17’s had a close tussle with Hay and were in the game right up until the end, unfortunately falling 3 short at the final whistle. Best players were Kate Whorwood (AB Building $5) who worked tirelessly in attack and Georgia Ferguson (Harvey/Laursen $10) who shot beautifully with a particularly killer third quarter with 10 goals off her own hand. The B reserve girls only made it to late in the first quarter before an injury to one of the Hay girls saw the game abandoned. We wish the Hay player all the best and hope you are back on court soon. The A grade girls welcomed a few of the B grade girls on to the court with a couple of regulars unable to make the trip to Hay but the girls slotted in perfectly and the team didn’t miss a beat with great defensive pressure all down the court meaning there was plenty of turnovers and scoring opportunities. Lauren Morrow (Harperbay bistro) lead the scoring in attack and Kalinda Stanton (TWCM) was the intercept queen pulling in the high balls all game and providing great drive down the court. B grade girls finished the day with a very similar scoreline to the A grade, the scoring was fast in the first half with the second half showing the excellent defensive pressure limiting Hay to just a few goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Ashea Bujdoso (Little shoe shop) had a day out, dominating the A and B grade midcourts for 6 quarters for the day and Jess Bray (TWCM) dominated the attacking transverse line.

Under 12s A great game for our Under 12’s against Wandella. Our Ladies Committee awards went to Taneisha Thamm and Ivy Whyte. Well done to all our players, each week we get stronger! Go Saints!

Reserves

B Reserve The girls came out hard again this week, trying to get their second win against Wandella. Unfortunately in the third quarter Wandella got ahead and kept the lead all the way to the end. L.Tomlins and T.Farrugia worked hard in the mid court until the very end, not letting anything deter them, even injury.

A full squad took on Wandella last week and put in a good performance despite going down in the finish. Luke Boyd was back to provide some drive and Daram Scown went in hard all day. Tex and Jake Hepburn led the way in the ruck, Joel Bremner got plenty of the ball around the ground, Brad Gilbert and Fidge kept hunting the footy. Best players: J. Bremner, D. Scown, Fidge, J.Steen, A.McSweeny, B.Gilbert. Seniors It was an exciting finish to last week’s match,

Awards: L.Tomlins- Exchange Hotel

unfortunately Quamby was on the wrong side of the scoreboard at the end. Cooky was among the goals early,

T.Farrugia- Mallee Physio B Grade Well done for the girls getting another win on the board! As always with Wandella it was a tough contest, but the girls kept their heads in the game and got the job done! It was a real team effort, I know it would have been a hard game to pick awards for this week!

Davo pulled in strong marks all day. Tobie was getting plenty of the footy, Luke Parker and Jarred battled hard. When the boys hit the front in the last quarter with goals from Butty and Blackers we thought we were home but Wandella’s goal kicking accuracy came to the fore, getting them home by a goal.

NULLAWIL J U LY 3 VS WA N D E L L A Nullawil Football/Netball Notes – Round 8 The Under 14’s came up against the top of the table Tigers, and they proved too strong for our boys. Although we never stopped trying, the Tigers ran away with a 57-point win. Better players were L.Cooper, T.Vearing, B.Kelly, S.Kelly, and D.Poyner. The Under 17’s also came up against the top of the table Tigers, and they too proved too strong for our boys. There were some excellent passages of play from both teams during the game, but the Tigers were a little to classy going forward, taking out the win 11.5 – 71 to 4.4 – 28. Better players were S.Kelly, D.Kelly, G.Box, M.Hogan and J.Box. The Reserves game was billed as the game of the day, as we came up against the previously undefeated and top of the table Tigers. If loud music in the rooms before the game was to determine the result, then our boys were going to be in trouble. Luckily, the music didn’t play a part, and it was a 7-point lead to Nully at quarter time. A 6 goal to 1 second quarter when kicking into the breeze really did set up the win. The second half was an impressive half of footy from our team, piling on 9.8 while keeping Macorna to just 2 points. Ralph was on song up forward kicking 7 goals and was well assisted by George who slotted 5 goals. Better players were R.Free, M.Poyner, G.Forrester, J.Vearing, A.Hogan and Z.Sullivan. The Seniors ran out 98-point winners, however it didn’t come easy, particularly in the first half. Macorna had most of the play in the first quarter, however, couldn’t get it through the big sticks, kicking 2.9 to our 3.2. The game opened in the second quarter, with an 8 goal to 3 term giving us a 29-point lead at the main break. The second half was one-way traffic, as we piled on 12.11 while
