VOLLEYBALL 101

EQUIPMENT The net height is 7’ 4 1/8” for women. The ball circumference is 25.5” to 27” and the weight is 9 to 10 ounces. The indoor court is 18 m x 9m. RULES Volleyball matches are made up of games played best three out of five to 30. The deciding game or game 5, if necessary, is only played to 15. Teams will switch sides when both teams have a total score of 8 points combined. The rally scoring system allows a point to be scored on any ball that hits the ground, regardless of which team is serving. Scores can occur from kills or errors. •

Each team can have six players on the floor at a time.

Teams must stay in the same positions that they started the game in.

Each team can have 12 substitutions per game. After that, no more subs may enter the game.

A player entering for another must continue to go in and out for that player for the duration of the game, unless they are the libero.

Each side is allowed three touches on the ball. The ball must go back over the net on the third hit, usually pass, set, attack. To hit the ball more that three times on a side is illegal, and the opposing team is awarded the point.

There cannot be double contact on the ball. The ball must hit clean and be passed clean. A double hit is also illegal, and the opposing team is awarded the point. The official signals a double hit by holding up two fingers.

POSITIONS: Middle Blocker: reads the opponent’s setter and blocks the ball Outside Hitter: an all-around player: hitting and blocking Libero: strictly a defensive player, a great passer and an even better digger, wears different color jersey than teammates. Setter: an offensive player decides who gets the ball and when Opposite: responsible for blocking the opponent’s outside hitter

Matt Newgent begins his eighth season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked each of the last four seasons, and as high as a #2 national ranking in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival seven years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2009 off-season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while continuing to recruit quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program. Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at the University of Indianapolis. Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at the University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001. Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis. THE

COUGAR

The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar first appeared as the official Redlands mascot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasionally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout! 16
