Red Hill Farms 2018 Spring Bull Sale Catalog

Page 1

Dear Friends, We are pleased to share our catalog and welcome you to our 13th Annual “More than a Bull” sale at Red Hill Farms. We are thankful to all our past customers and to the many commercial producers and purebred breeders who have studied and expressed interest in our cattle. In each of the last four Red Hill spring sales, bulls have sold into 13 states. It is humbling to learn of the success our customers are having with Red Hill genetics. Our goal is to provide practical breeding stock to improve the profitability of our customers. We pride ourselves in offering you, the customer, the results of our comprehensive records system – from birth to rail to cowherd records – and sharing all the information with you. We have made every effort to provide information to simplify selection decisions. We realize that the number of EPDs available has continued to increase, and deciding how to use the entire array can be challenging. However, a logical solution is the use of selection indices - a procedure that combines all the EPDs into a $ value. We provide genomically enhanced EPDs on every bull and those EPDs are used to calculate the index values. We have tremendous confidence in these indices and use them in our own selection programs. We are proud that our bulls rank near the top of each breed. We encourage you to take note of the percentile rankings given for each EPD and index. This value gives the relative ranking within each breed. We welcome you to join us on Friday for our cow herd tours and evening “Cattle Talk”. The Friday evening program will feature Dr. Nevil Speer, Vice President of U.S. Operations, AgriClear, Inc. speaking on “Improving Profitability by Capturing the Value of Superior Genetics and Management.” A major reward of the seedstock business is the opportunity to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of our customers and fellow breeders. Visitors are always welcome to visit our farm to study our cattle, records, and production system. We also enjoy the opportunity to answer questions relative to the cattle and our operation. After reviewing the catalog, please contact us with any questions you might have. We hope to see you on March 16 and 17. Bart, Sarah and Ty Jones Gordon and Susan Jones

Red Hill Farms – 3

2018 – Red Hill Farms Sale Information FERTILITY/DISPOSITION GUARANTEE: We guarantee the fertility and disposition of every bull selling. All bulls sell with a breeding soundness exam (BSE) certificate. Each bull is guaranteed to be a satisfactory breeder; assuming the buyer provides acceptable nutrition, health and management. • If a bull proves to be a non-breeder, the buyer must contact Bart Jones or Sarah Jones on or before January 15, 2019, to make a claim. • Red Hill Farms reserves the right to request a statement from a veterinarian and/or the bull being returned to Red Hill Farms at the buyer’s expense. • If proper claim is made, the buyer will be given full credit if the bull is returned, OR full credit minus salvage value if the bull was sold with the credit to be used in a future Red Hill Farms sale. GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS: Bulls that have genomic enhanced EPDs are designated in the catalog with a logo. Most of the bulls selling have been genomically enhanced. DNA markers provide molecular breeding values which are used to enhance the EPDs and improve the accuracy of the EPDs. This is particularly important because the EPDs on these bulls are much more accurate than prior to the use of these DNA values. These enhanced EPDs now have the same meaning as data for bulls that have several progeny records. SALE PROCEDURES: We will conduct a “Farmers’ Auction” to sell each individual lot. Cattle sell in catalog order. Each animal has a base price listed in the catalog. When it is time to sell a particular animal, we will ask those interested to hold up their buyer number. If only one number is in the air, the animal will be sold at the base price to that individual. If there are multiple numbers in the air, we will gradually raise the price until one number remains. If there is a tie (last two bidders drop out at the same time), the bid is given to the buyer with the lower buyer number. The other bidder may raise the bid by $250 if he wishes to stay in the auction. We intend for this to be a simple, low-pressure sale for the benefit of all involved. Sale Information

Red Hill Farms – 2018

Red Hill Cooperators/Partners COYOTE HILLS FARM (CCCH) – Coyote Hills is owned by the Dal Clark Family, Scottsville, KY. The Clark family has been in the Red Angus business since 2006. The Coyote Hills cattle are heavily influenced by Buffalo Creek and Red Hill genetics. BUFFALO CREEK RED ANGUS (BUF) – The name Buffalo Creek is forever synonymous with quality Red Angus cattle. After the Buffalo Creek dispersal, Gini Chase asked if we would manage some of her personal cows. We were excited she would send these cows to Red Hill. We enjoy working with Gini, as it is always good to get wisdom from a master breeder. Jack and Gini have been great supporters of our program, and we are honored to have these cows at Red Hill. SOUTH FORK FARMS / 5 STAR CATTLE (SFORK AND 5STAR) – David Billingsley runs a 75-cow herd on 250 acres in Barren County, KY. The 107-acre homestead has been operated by David’s family since 1945. David is a charter member of the Barren County Cattlemen’s Association, and he is a member of the Barren Beef Group. ROGERS CATTLE COMPANY (RCC) – Rogers Cattle Company, LLC started in 2001 as a diversified pasture-based livestock operation and is owned by Johnny and Sharon Rogers. Their herd consists primarily of fall calving Red Angus cows which are mated to Red Angus bulls. There is also a select group of Black Angus and commercial cows. Recently they have A.I. bred some of their cows to Simmental bulls. Johnny and Sharon strive to produce cattle that thrive on intensively grazed fescue based pastures, as well as have great maternal ability, grow well and have excellent carcass merit. HARDROCK BEEF CATTLE (HBC) – Hardrock Beef Cattle was started by Ronnie and Donna Holman on the family farm in the western piedmont of North Carolina. Both Ronnie’s father and son are integral participants in the cattle management. Today the herd is comprised of Red Angus and red SimAngus cattle. Hardrock Beef Cattle shares a similar breeding philosophy to Red Hill Farms and have purchased all of their bulls from Red Hill since 2008. Hardrock Beef Cattle operates on a Kentucky 31 based forage system. GERKIN FARMS (GER) – The Lee Gerkin Family from Orleans, Indiana, are long-time customers and family friends. The Gerkins are partners on a few cows at Red Hill, and we appreciate the opportunity to be associated with such good farmers and agricultural enthusiasts. ROCKHILL RANCH (RHR) – Mr. Rickey Nicholas and Family of Rockhill Ranch in Purvis, Mississippi, purchased some heifers and cows at Red Hill in 2015 and 2016. Those cows have remained at Red Hill on a partnership basis.

Red Angus Guide to EPDs HB ...... HerdBuilder Index – Need bulls for developing a profitable cowherd and maximizing the value of marketed progeny? Select a bull with a high HB value. GM ...... GridMaster Index – If you market all of your calf crop and want to increase the value of that calf crop, select a bull with a high GM value to maximize your profit. CED ..... Calving Ease Direct – Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted. BW...... Birth Weight – Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW. WW ..... Weaning Weight and YW ....Yearling Weight – Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your payweight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are. Milk .... Milk – Predicts differences in weaning weight of daughter’s progeny due to milk production. ME ...... Maintenance Energy – Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight. HPG..... Heifer Pregnancy – Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation.

CEM .... Calving Ease Maternal – Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted. STAY.... Stayability – The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profitability. Bulls that have a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age. MARB .. Marbling Score – Select bulls with high MARB EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime. YG ...... Yield Grade – Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on grid-marketed progeny. CW...... Carcasss Weight – Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue. REA ..... Rib Eye Area – Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade. FAT ..... Backfat – Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low FAT EPD to reduce backfat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

FRAME SCORES: Frame size in cattle is an extremely important trait, and deciding on the frame size needed in the next herd bull should be one of the major criteria for selection. Unfortunately, frame scoring is NOT an exact science. If cattle are on halter and easy to handle, frame scoring can be quite repeatable. However, when measuring frame score in the chute while collecting other yearling data, the measurements are not as repeatable as desired. We have decided to break the frame scores into thirds for the bulls this year. For example, a 4 frame score would have been between 4.33 and 4.66 in the past while a 4 - would have been between 4.0 and 4.33 and a 4 + would have been between 4.67 and 4.99. Stated another way a 4 – is a low 4, 4 is an average 4 and 4 + is a high 4.

Red Angus Fall Bulls

Red Hill Red Angus 18-Month-Old Bulls The Fall Bulls were weaned in April and May 2017. After a brief dry lot weaning period, the bulls ran on fescue pasture and free choice mineral during the Spring and Summer. Yearling weight, frame score, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound data were taken on 9/11/17. It would have been easy to step up the energy in the diet and add 300 pounds to the yearling weights, but we feel this would have had a negative impact on the bulls’ longevity and chose the slower growing forage development. Since that date, the bulls have been on stockpiled fescue and soyhulls (1% of body weight) until mid-January when a high-roughage TMR was added to their diet. Breeding Soundness Exams were performed on February 9, 2018, and the scrotal measurements printed in this catalog are from that date. These bulls have the right condition (fit and trim) and age to service cows immediately.

248D is a son of our most powerful donor cow, 104U. 104U is a flushmate sister to our Julian 1W bull at ABS. Other sons of 104U have sold to Diedrichsen (NE), Rollins Ranch (FL), Wood (OK), Calvo (NE) and Vinton (NE). All her sons have been well liked, and we have retained 5 daughters of 104U. 248D was used this winter on a group of heifers. We are very impressed with his structural soundness and length of stride. As his indexes indicate — he does most everything well. We would like to collect this bull following the sale.

RED HILL B571 BARMAID 104U, dam of Lot 1

REDHILL 66S BARMAID 57W, dam of Lots 2-6 57W is a unique donor at Red Hill. She is linebred to 17P and from the same Barmaid cow family as so many of our top cows. Her sons are selling as Lots 2-6. We are retaining 3 flushmate daughters to these bulls as well as 57W’s natural calf from the same crop. We also have two more daughters of 57W that are donors at Red Hill. The offspring of 57W are consistently at the top of their respective groups. 57W has a rare combination of top 1% HPG and STAY and 20% for CEM. This data along with her moderate mature size and stoutness of structure makes her unique to our program.

“Worked calves yesterday from 84S, 28U and the bull we bought from you last fall. They’re so calm that we had to push them in the chute. Interesting was that there were two AI calves from other [non-Red Hill] bulls that were noticeably different in disposition as we handled them.” Jim and Julie Vaughn, Rocky Glade Farm, Eagleville, TN – customer of Red Hill Red Hill Farms – 11

D455’s dam, W24, is one of our favorite cows, and she was flushed in the fall of 2017. She is very feminine and angular through her neck and yet expands into a massive rib cage. Her udder is perfect with great suspension and ideal teats (it does have white pigment). She has a sound structure starting at the ground with great feet and a correct set to her hock, hip, knee and shoulder.

One of the few 176A sons in the sale this year. Watch for more in the future as his daughters are as good as they come at Red Hill. 277D’s dam, 258Z is a beautiful young cow with a perfect udder, and she is entering our embryo program. She is a maternal sibling to Nice’n Easy, and we expect big things from her. 277D has a full sister born last year that is a top young cow that now belongs to Ty. He can tell you all about her and would like to show her to you.

When we were considering cows for ET last fall we had to consider many factors. T51 did not have the best EPDs. However, when we looked at her production history and the number of her daughters and grand-daughters retained in our herd, we decided she needed to be flushed. Mother nature and father time have revealed that she is a good cow. BUF CRK THE RIGHT KIND U199

Red Angus Yearling Bulls

Red Hill Farms – 2018

Red Hill Red Angus Spring Yearling Bulls The bulls were developed on a high-roughage haylage based ration with a goal of the bulls gaining 2.25 pounds per day. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and height measurements were taken on January 22, 2018. Scrotal measurements and BSEs were performed by Dr. Chad Shaw on February 13, 2018, and the scrotal measurements printed are actual measurements from that date. Many of these bulls have grown 1 to 2 centimeters since their January yearling measurements.

The data drives this guy to the spring yearling leadoff position. His indexes are among the top in the Red Angus database. His dam, X072, is a very moderate-framed cow with a nice udder. X072 is also the dam of our herdsire 69B that sold in 2015 to Brad Grill Family (SD). We have also kept 5 daughters of X072 in our herd.

“I encourage producers to think about bulls more as an investment rather than as an expense. Think about what you can invest economically, relative to what that investment can return. The biggest mistake I believe cow-calf producers can make is not investing in a good bull.” Jason Cleere, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, Texas A&M University Red Hill Farms – 23

Another stout-featured, masculine 69B son. His dam, 122C, is an outstanding young cow. She is very feminine and balanced with near perfect udder structure. We believe in linebreeding what works at Red Hill. 75E traces to B571 (7 times), M554 (3 times), Nice’n Easy (2 times), and P707 (3 times). Can we say stacked pedigree?

REDHILL T189 BARMAID 190W 190W has been a model Red Angus cow at Red Hill. Lots 32-34 are her sons selling this year. She will have a lasting impact on our breeding program. She has produced six sons we have used and continue to use at Red Hill, and we currently have 13 daughters in production. Her most notable sons include 132Y (owned with 5L and JR), 186A (owned with Ozark Hills and Gourley), 217C (owned with Shelby Cattle Co.), 220C (owned with Holman and Rogers), 231C (owned with Hubble and Porter) and our leading herdsire, 215C. She is our oldest Nice’n Easy daughter and has set the bar high for what we expect from this group of females.

Profit per cow, or per acre? “If we focus on profit per acre, there will be a tendency to seek the right-sized cow for our environment and select best practices for economic efficiency and profitability.” Burke Teichert, Retired Vice President and General Manager of Deseret – BEEF Magazine (August 2012) Red Hill Farms – 25

Sale Information

ASA EPDs and $ Indexes CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight. WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. MILK (MILK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

COLOR Red: Red BB: Homozygous Black Bb: Heterozygous Black Black: Black POLLED STATUS PP: Homozygous Polled Pp: Heterozygous Polled PLD: Polled P/S: Polled/Scurred

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of docile calves from one sire compared to calves of other sires. STAYABILITY (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. YIELD GRADE (YG): Yield grade score. MARBLING (MRB): Marbling score. RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of ribeye. ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details). TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details). BACK FAT (BF): Inches of back fat. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: AL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis. USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements, use API. If not, then TI. Just as with EPDs, focus on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring $140 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $90 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over four years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. 28 – Red Hill Farms

SimGenetics Yearling Bulls

Red Hill Farms – 2018

Red Hill SimGenetics Spring Yearling Bulls The Simmental bull management has been identical to that of the Red Angus bulls – as all the bulls ran in the same pastures and were fed from the same troughs. The bulls were developed on a high-roughage haylage based ration with a goal of the bulls gaining 2.25 pounds per day. GW STEP OUT 672X

Study the individual performance, study the EPDs and study his indexes. There are no holes. He has jumped thru each hoop with ease and gone right to the top of our SimAngus offering. Maybe more important than his impeccable data is his soft middle, moderate frame and appealing phenotype. If you want to add carcass superiority and terminal traits look no further. This bull is a tank. He combines a very moderate frame with stellar data. His dam, 5A, is a model cow—moderate, beautiful udder, slick hair, and calm disposition. Additionally, her dam and grandam were also great cows for us. 25E is quadruple bred to Hook’s Shear Force. We intend to use this bull heavily at Red Hill. We would like to collect this bull immediately after the sale. We are selling 1/2 semen interest and only the spring or fall possession. Buyer gets to choose which breeding season they would like to have. If you are interested in this bull, discuss this with any of us at Red Hill prior to the sale.

We consider 106E’s dam, 53A, to be one of the top cows in our program. Her first calf was one of our high selling bulls in 2016 going to Hines and Watson (KY). Her next calf was a heifer that has calved this spring and is another foundation type female. She is a full sister to 106E and udder quality is super. Use this bull with confidence of siring steers to generate profit or females you love to look at each day. GW STEP OUT 672X

This is another slick-haired son of 86C with an outstanding pedigree and a very balanced EPD profile. The maternal granddam, 363L, is the dam of 701T. Since 701T is in the pedigree twice, this puts 363L in the pedigree 3 times. We are very thankful to Jim Butcher for allowing 363L to come to Red Hill. We will continue to linebreed the 363L cow in our program. REDHILL 642X 54P 163Z

109E is another slick-haired son of 86C and from one of our favorite SimAngus cows. Both 14Y and 2P have been fantastic producers at Red Hill. 14Y is the dam of 5A, a 36X daughter that is the dam of Lot 38. Lots 47, 48, and 49 would be ideal to use in a multi-sire setting since the bulls are so similar in type and pedigree. GGP-LD results pending. GW GAME CHANGER 823Y

Cross-Ty Yearling Bulls

Red Hill Cross-Ty Bull There is good reason this program is going to be called Cross-TY. Ty Jones is involved in everything we do at Red Hill, and he is adventurous. He has heard so much positive family discussion about crossbreeding and hybrid vigor that he is totally sold on providing Red Hill customers with the opportunity to reap the economic advantages gained from crossbreeding. Ty has also observed the tremendous performance advantages of crossbred pigs compared to purebreds. We will continue to identify cattle from other breeds that adapt to the fescue environment and management scheme at Red Hill. The reason for these experimental efforts is to identify breeds that can be used to provide more opportunities to increase the profitability of our customers. These new genetics are likely to be made available as hybrids or composites; however, we will not rule out the use of one or two other pure breeds in the future.

We have an unbelievable specimen to start our Cross-Ty bulls. This calf is out of one of Ty’s Red Angus cows and sired by Ledger. We identified Ledger by evaluating the Charolais database and finding he was a breed leader in most every trait except fat – and we like that as we believe we need more fat to make the cows reproductive in our environment. After visiting the Lindskov-Thiel Ranch, we were more convinced about Ledger’s value in the beef business. Lot 57 has an amazing phenotype and is above average for performance measures.

Red Hill Angus Bulls We are presenting American Simmental Association (ASA) EPDs on our Angus bulls for the convenience of our customers for comparing these Angus bulls with our Red Angus and SimAngus bulls. You can directly compare the growth and carcass EPDs across all three breeds (without adjustment) when using these ASA EPDs for the Angus bulls. At the bottom of this page, we have included the American Angus Association (AAA) registration numbers and EPDs for these Angus bulls. If you are a Kentucky or Tennessee producer with cost-share money available, you must use the AAA EPDs on these Angus bulls for that program.

Kapp Eldorene Erica SSO 765, Dam of Lots 60, 61, 62 and 64 765 is a model Angus cow in our system. She is moderate with extra rib and the unique ability to wean high-performance calves while maintaining excellent body condition. At 11 years old, she continues to impress. Her udder is excellent, and her disposition is calm and quiet. We continue to build around her strong influence and are using three of her sons in our breeding program.

Red Hill Farms – 2018

Lot 60 Lot 60, 61 and 62 are Dash sons of our Angus donor cow, 765. These bulls represent the Red Hill effort to breed and select Angus cattle with a similar emphasis to the selection program that has been so successful with our Red Angus cattle. These 3 bulls should be excellent for calving ease and the data indicates they should be truly superior for the important maternal traits of moderate milk, HP, and CEM. Dash has a negative EPD for both Mature Height and Mature Weight, and his $EN is +23.10 which is in the top 4% of the Angus breed. We are retaining a flush mate to these bulls to use in our herd. 17E is a full brother to the Daylite son that sold in our sale a couple years ago. The 776 cow is a contemporary of our 765 cow and she has been an excellent producer. 776 is slick haired and very adaptable to our environment. She always brings in a nice calf at weaning time. 19E is a son of KCF Absolute, one of the most widely used bulls in the Angus breed. This bull should be outcross breeding for most of our customers.

40 – Red Hill Farms

SimGenetics Fall Bulls

Red Hill Farms – 2018

Red Hill SimGentics 18-Month-Old Bulls The Simmental bull management has been identical to that of the Red Angus bulls – as all the bulls ran in the same pastures and were fed from the same troughs. The Fall Bulls were weaned in April and May 2016. After a brief dry lot weaning period, the bulls ran on fescue pasture and free choice mineral during the Spring and Summer. Yearling weight, frame score, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound data were taken on 9/12/16. It would have been easy to step up the energy in the diet and add 300 pounds to the yearling weights, but we feel this would have had a negative impact on the bulls’ longevity and chose the slower growing forage development. Since that date, the bulls were on stockpiled fescue and soyhulls (1% of body weight) until mid-January when a high-roughage TMR was added to their diet. Breeding Soundness Exams were performed on January 31, 2017, and the scrotal measurements printed in this catalog are from that date. These bulls have the right condition (fit and trim) and age to service cows immediately.

With the success of 231A, we get lots of questions about his dam. She has raised another very nice bull in Lot 65. Like his maternal brother, he is very slick haired and balanced. His dam, X004, is a beast. She may be a little big for ideal, but her width and dimension is overwhelming.

Calving ease supreme in a 5/8 SimAngus bull that offers the potential for a lot of hybrid vigor in British based cows.

Red Hill Farms – 45

Choose Wisely By Dr. Tom Field

For the commercial cow-calf producer the two most important professional relationships are with the seedstock supplier and the herd veterinarian. Genetics provides a foundation upon which the future of the enterprise will stand. The most influential genetic decisions made by a cow-calf producer who produces their own replacement heifers are the three most recent generations of herd sires. These bulls account for approximately 75 percent of the calf crop’s genetic makeup in terms of their direct influence as sires of calves and as the sires of the cowherd. Given the tremendous influence of the bull battery, the sire acquisition process takes on a special level of significance and thus, the relationship with the genetic supplier becomes highly important. One of my mentors in the cattle business believed that before a decision was made on which bulls to purchase, cattle producers should visit the potential seedstock suppliers business at least twice – initially to check out the supplier and secondly to evaluate the cattle. The concept was founded on a commitment to only buying seedstock from herds managed under a similar philosophy and with comparable weather, forage and climatic conditions to the purchaser’s situation. His belief was that if the people were solid, then you could more confidently do business safe in the knowledge that they were creating good cattle and that they would stand behind them. 46 – Red Hill Farms

However, even before contact is made with a seedstock producer, the cow-calf manager must assess their own conditions, level of herd performance in critically important areas, and solidify their goals and objectives for the beef enterprise. Bull buyers who are making choices from an information rich perspective are more prepared to build a solid working relationship with a seedstock supplier. Determining the mating system is another key decision that should be determined by the cow-calf producer using knowledge about their own enterprise as well as leveraging the experience of other producers as well as the genetics supplier. The mating system as well as the sires selected to work within the mating system requires that commercial producers carefully assess four critical areas: 1. Feed resources and environmental limits 2. Labor resources 3. Marketing goals and objectives 4. Gaps between present and desired levels of performance in traits critical to profitability Once these issues have been addressed in detail then a meaningful discussion can be undertaken with potential seedstock suppliers. A long term and valued relationship with a seedstock supplier(s) begins with business

integrity, a commitment to providing solutions to customers, conversations founded on meaningful information, and service after the sale. As these discussions are undertaken, two concepts should always be kept in mind – first, the novice bull buyer deserves an attentive supplier who is willing to provide education, answer questions, and most of importantly follow up after the sale. Secondly, there is a dramatic difference between the supplier whose sole goal is to sell a bull and the supplier focused on solving problems for a customer. Sire selection should be founded on making the most objective decision possible that is aligned with the overall strategy and vision for the cow-calf enterprise. Thus, it is essential to acquire bulls only from those herds with an active engagement in a performance program backed by a dynamic national data base and supported with state of the art genetic prediction tools. It is not important that a cow-calf producer understand the intricacies of how genetic estimates are calculated but developing a solid functional understanding of how to use the estimates and information is critical. The role of the seedstock supplier is to provide educational and consulting support to assure the comfort level of the customer. The sire selection process is one driven by winnowing down the available bulls for sale into a group of individuals that possess the appropriate combination of performance metrics that align with the limitations of the resources available on the ranch and assure conformance to the demands of the target market for progeny. This narrowing down process can be driven by several key focal points:

2. Will replacement females be kept from the progeny – if yes, then what is the appropriate level of mature size and milk production for the particular farm or ranch? Attaining profitable levels of reproductive performance depends on the keeping the nutritional needs of the herd aligned with cost effective feed sources which are often in the form of grazable forages. 3. What is the optimal combination of growth, muscularity, marbling and carcass yield for the target market? Producing feeder calves that can be merchandised to generate high levels of revenue is fundamental to profitability. 4. Finally, what are the gaps in performance for the herd that need to be closed to improve productivity, profitability and quality of life? For example, if cattle are flighty and nervous in handling situation then more focus on docility is warranted. If udders are badly structured leading to calves unable to suckle and thus requiring more labor, then udder quality will need to be addressed. In each of these discussions, the reputable seedstock breeder will provide information, insight and advice. Using their experience and knowledge is critical to building a genetic base designed for long term satisfaction from the cow-calf enterprise.

1. Avoid sires that create dystocia. Calving difficulty is a leading cause of both calf and breeding female death loss, contributes to increased morbidity of calves born in difficult births, and diminishing subsequent reproductive rates of females experiencing dystocia. Red Hill Farms – 47

84S is an easy calving, low maintenance bull that has a perfect disposition and is very slick haired. This bull is ideal for producing females suitable for the heat and humidity of the South. “One of B571’s greatest sons, we bought 84S from Red Hill Farms in 2008 for $8,100. In February 2011, 25% interest of 84S sold to Ozark Hills Red Angus and Calvo Family Red Angus for $30,000. This past December, the 13 sons in our sale averaged over $6,000. 84S is one of the premier, proven calving ease sires in the breed, with an excellent spread from birth to yearling. Moderate in size, well-muscled and extremely correct, with excellent feet, legs, and testicles, and he has an exceptionally quiet disposition. He epitomizes what the breed is about and is without doubt, a true herd builder.” Buffalo Creek Red Angus, February 2012 ARA Magazine. Rick Calvo notes the tremendous pasture breeding skills of 84S. At Calvo’s Ranch in Nebraska, 84S bred 88 out of 90 females in 50 days. He would breed a cow and move on to the next. This is a testament to the libido, structural correctness, and fertility of 84S. 84S is one of the most widely used bulls in the Red Angus breed that is not in a major AI stud, currently having over 1,150 progeny in the Red Angus database. He has been used successfully in numerous herds across the country. We cannot make enough positive comments about this cow family. Owned with Buffalo Creek Red Angus (WY), Ozark Hills Red Angus (MO), Calvo Family Red Angus (NE).

“I like small to moderate-framed cows without high milk production. I think that makes today’s operations most profitable.” Burke Teichert, Retired Vice President and General Manager of Deseret – BEEF Magazine (August 2012) 48 – Red Hill Farms

Buffalo Creek Nice ‘N Easy T189 was our pick of the bulls in the November 2008 Buffalo Creek Sale. We purchased T189 with our cooperator herd, Coyote Hills. T189 is sired by BUF CRK Medallion N328, a bull whose progeny have adapted and performed exceptionally well in the Coyote Hills herd in Kentucky. T189’s dam is simply an outstanding Beckton Julian GG B571 daughter with an exceptional production record. Click here for more information about T189’s dam, P154. Prior to the Buffalo Creek Sale, we were able to find P154 in one of the huge pastures at Buffalo Creek thriving on dry grass, and in respectable body condition for a young cow that had been so fertile and productive. She also had small teats and an apparent problem free udder. Two years later when we attended the Buffalo Creek dispersal, we purchased P154. We believe she was the best cow offered in the sale for the type of cattle we like. T189’s maternal granddam, 9005, had averages of 105 WR, 106 YR and a MPPA of 104.6 on 10 natural calves before going into the Buffalo Creek Transplant program. T189 puts together an unusually strong combination of convenience and cow efficiency traits on both sides of his pedigree. T189 is also outstanding from a phenotypic standpoint. He is a very moderate framed, structurally correct bull with tremendous width of chest, spring of rib and body volume. Out in the pasture with a large group of cows here in KY, T189 exhibits excellent overall balance as he moves over the hills. We like the way that T189 has performed on fescue since coming to Kentucky, maintaining or gaining body condition while running with cows during the breeding season. To add to T189’s uniqueness, watch his video. This video was taken in early February 2013 when he was removed from 40 Fall calving cows. His ability to get the cows bred and maintain excellent flesh is unique. We have learned the importance of short, slick-haired cattle that thrive on fescue. This video shows how T189 has little to no hair in the middle of winter. T189’s daughters and granddaughters will be the backbone of our herd for many years to come. These females excel in udder quality and are consistently producing at the top of their respective contemporary groups. Their udder quality, docility and fleshing ability make these T189 daughters favorites of visitors to Red Hill. Owned in partnership with Buffalo Creek Red Angus (WY) and Coyote Hills Farm (KY). The problem-free phenotype of these bulls and heifers along with their superior performance and genetic values led us to call this 84S x Nice’n Easy mating the “Royal Cross” of the Red Hill program. The dam, 190W, does everything right – fertility, adaptability, disposition and udder quality along with fantastic rib shape and body volume which makes her a very easy-fleshing cow. These bulls are linebred to our great Beckton cow, M554. These bulls represent the Red Hill program from the standpoint of disposition, soundness of feet and legs, body volume and slick hair. There are fall 2017 calves sired by 215C and 220C as well as spring 2018 calves by all 3 bulls. These are truly calving ease bulls, and the calves show excellent vigor at birth. 176A is our choice of T189 sons produced to date. He was a standout in every phase of production. He was used naturally at Red Hill Farms in the fall of 2014 and bred extremely well in the pasture. 176A excels in all performance traits in addition to having excellent structural soundness and adaptability to our fescue environment. 176A is a little larger framed compared to his sire but very balanced and eye appealing in his design. We have used 176A heavily in our breeding program. His first calves were quite popular in our 2017 sale, and his first daughters are now in production. The 176A daughters are moderate, easy-fleshing females with excellent udders and great dispositions. 176A daughters are the kind to make Red Angus the breed of choice for heifer production! 176A’s dam, 182W, has produced four exceptional calves – an 84S daughter we retained, an 84S son that was the top selling bull in 2014, 176A and a bull selling in 2016 sired by 157Y. Her ratios are BW 4/102, WW 4/105 and YW 4/105. 182W was flushed in the fall of 2016 – watch for many more progeny in the future. 176A is owned with B Lazy T Ranch (SD), Grill Cattle Company (SD), and Fick Red Angus (NE). 271B was retained at Red Hill because of his unique pedigree, slick hair coat, and calf disposition along with balance in phenotype and performance. We had not kept a Red Angus bull in several years for our own use, but we decided the time was right with this young prospect. As most observers of our program have noticed, we have used several Beckton bulls over the years. After intensively studying the sires at Beckton’s, we identified S107 as a bull that had some intangible traits that might benefit our breeding program – short and slick hair, extra rib and body, good feet and calm dispositions. We chose to sample him in our program. S107 sired some very nice sons and daughters, but it was not until this second generation that we found an S107 bred bull to use more heavily in our program. 271B is linebred to Beckton Julian 7526—he traces back to 7526 fourteen times (eight on the top of his pedigree and six on the bottom). As scan time approached in the fall of 2015, 271B caught the eye of Bart and Gordon. He displayed exceptional feet and design with extra thickness and dimension. He was first out of 15 contemporary bulls for %IMF while being above average for REA and Yearling Weight. His hair is short and testicles are excellent. 271B’s sire, 190Z, is an S107 son that sold in our 2014 sale to L. J. Watson (KY). We had used 190Z the fall prior to the sale to clean up our Red Angus heifers. 190Z’s dam is the only daughter of LT142 in the Red Hill herd. She is from our popular and productive Barmaid cow family and has consistently weaned above average calves. 271B’s dam, 195Z, is an S107 daughter that is a light-colored cow with a nice udder. She had 271B as a two-year-old and calved in the fall of 2015 as a three-year-old. Calving interval of 354 days. 195Z has been selected as a Red Hill donor. 195Z’s dam, 204X, has calved regularly and produced four heifers retained by Red Hill. She is also from the same cow family as RHF-CCCH P707 Nebula 1A, a bull used for two seasons at Red Hill and co-owned with Holman and Rogers (NC). At Red Hill we see the importance of collecting all the data, all the time. The more we collect, the more we are excited about the impact 271B can have on our program. 9B is being used at Red Hill to intensify the genetics of BUF CRK Redpride P154. We believe this B571 daughter could be the most influential B571 daughter in the breed. Her son, T189, is making his mark at Red Hill, and we believe 9B is positioned to make his mark on our breeding program. 9B is the result of mating P154 to U199. This flush produced two other top end bulls we sold and two daughters we retained in our herd. 9B has a standout phenotype. He is balanced with extra rib and body and is sound footed. His data is just as balanced – ranking near the top of the breed for multiple traits. Based on his pedigree, 9B should sire daughters with excellent udders. Owned with Dan and Justin Vinton (NE). 49D is the result of the Red Hill effort to bring important genetic variation from Angus to Red Angus. AAR Ten X 7008 SA was chosen because of marbling, docility and the fact that the Ten X cattle were not “out of bounds” for frame size and $EN. 104U, the granddam of 9D, is arguably one of the most outstanding phenotypic and genetic packages ever at Red Hill. The cows on the bottom of the pedigree trace to the B571 daughter, BUF CRK Amber N379, the dam of our 1A herd bull and the outstanding 204X cow. 49D puts together a unique genetic and phenotypic package. 49D ranks in the top 1% of the breed for both HB and GM indices – quite impressive.49D is a moderate-framed, thick-made, easy-fleshing bull that is slick haired and has a calm disposition. We have just calved several heifers and cows that were bred to 49D. All have calved unassisted, and the calves have excellent vigor at birth. We are very pleased with the young calves sired by this bull. Owned with Brad and Paula Pokorny (NE). SEMEN AVAILABLE

We were looking for a Step Out son with all the positive attributes of Step Out – foot size, length of stride, soundness, growth and carcass traits – without bringing along the birthweight. 231A’s dam, X004, is a Gateway cow that has adapted well to our fescue environment and has excellent progeny ratios. She is now a donor cow at Red Hill. Watch for more progeny in the future! 231A’s calves are always the heaviest in each contemporary group at weaning. His calves are very dense, wide-centered and heavy muscled-cattle that have tremendous growth rate without the extra frame size. His calves are never “out of bounds” on frame size in either direction. All daughters are being retained at Red Hill. Daughters of 231A were calved in the fall of 2017 and in the spring of 2018. We are simply elated with those daughters - tremendous dispositions, tight and perfectly shaped udders with small teats, great fleshing ability, and the same denseness and center body width of their sire.

J Bar J Nightride 225Z is an exciting addition to Red Hill Farms. We think he compliments our 701T cattle very well. Nightride rose to the top in the group of bulls at Great Lakes Beef Connection. He possesses the moderate frame and thickness we demand with an awesome set of EPDs. We have found Nightride to be as easy calving as any Red Angus or black Angus bull we have used. Owned with J Bar J Ranch (MI) and Gibbs Farms (AL).

Red Hill Muskoka 71C is the 3/4 Simmental bull that topped our 2016 sale going to Mike Tulloch in Ontario, Canada. We were very appreciative for Mike and Brian Pogue studying our cattle and coming to buy this bull. This bull represents many of our SimAngus breeding program goals. We have strived to maintain exceptional growth while adding lots of rib and body in a moderate-framed package. 71C fits the bill. His performance ratios were 94 BWR, 114 WWR, 110 YWR, 127 %IMF, and 110 REA. His dam and her paternal sisters by 36X are a great group of young cows at Red Hill. Also, his maternal granddam, 81U, is one of our best Red Coat daughters. Our first calves by Muskoka were born in the fall of 2017, with more born in the spring of 2018. Muskoka 71C will continue to be used heavily at Red Hill. Owned with Mike Tulloch (Canada). SEMEN AVAILABLE

57B was retained in 2015 because of his moderate frame, rib shape, body volume and excellent feet. He is a Beef Maker son that is out of a Red Coat daughter of our 54P Red Angus cow. His ratios were 110 BWR, 101 WWR, 109 YWR, 83 IMF and 100 REA. Because of his extra natural thickness and soundness, 57B has been popular among visitors. 57B’s dam is a model SimAngus female. Red Hill 163Z 52X 86C was the top performing bull at Red Hill in the Spring of 2016. His performance ratios are 105 BWR, 107 WWR, 117 YWR, 112 % IMF, and 118 REA. 86C is a slick-haired, super sound athlete whose calves are very impressive. The calves are small at birth with excellent vigor and are the slickest-haired sire group at Red Hill. 86C’s dam, 52X, is sired by our Red Angus bull, Nice’n Easy T189, that is a super sire for adaptability to our environment. The maternal granddam is an outstanding daughter of Red Coat and has a great udder. 86C’s paternal granddam, 54P, is the most influential cow in our Red Angus program. Even though 86C is only 3/8 Simmental, he still has the Simmental power and growth we are striving to get along with the tremendous fertility and adaptability of our very best Red Angus. 86C is essentially unrelated to most of the Simmental breed with NO Shear Force, Legacy, or Premium Beef, and he is only a great grandson of 701T. We think this bull has a great future in our Red SimAngus program. SEMEN AVAILABLE

213B is a promising purebred that fits well in the Red Hill program. 213B is extremely calm and is as slick as any bull on the farm. 213B is an ET son of GW Game Changer and out of our outstanding Shear Force daughter, 14S, from Tom Hook. 14S is truly an amazing cow – she stays slick-haired in our fescue environment, her BCS is usually 7, and she weans the heaviest calf in the pasture. The first calves by 213B have been impressive - reasonably small and vigorous. SEMEN AVAILABLE

Red Hill Farms Honored as 2017 Red Angus Breeder of the Year

Johnny Rogers, left, presented Red Hill Farms of Lafayette, Tennessee, with the Breeder of the Year Award. Ty, Sarah and Bart Jones, accepted the award at the National Red Angus Convention in Colorado Springs in September. Immeasurable passion, time and devotion are common denominators on all esteemed cattle farms and ranches. The producers who rise above the rest are dedicated to pushing boundaries and extracting the maximum return on investment from their cattle. The Red Angus Association of America honored Red Hill Farms headquartered in Lafayette, Tennessee, as the Breeder of the Year at its 64th annual awards banquet in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on September 15, 2017. The Breeder of the Year Award is presented to members who maintain an excellent standard of quality in breeding Red Angus cattle. Red Hill Farms is owned by Bart, Sarah and Ty Jones and Gordon and Susan Jones. The Jones family has a long history of promoting Red Angus in their region and have never wavered on their commitment to utilize data to aggressively select for economically relevant traits and deliver greater profitability to their commercial customers. Red Hill Farms believes in the “More Than Just a Bull” philosophy and

stays engaged with their customers through continued education and outreach programs. Additionally, the family is repeatedly a leader in volunteerism through Red Angus committee service, event hosting and advocacy for the Red Angus breed. The original farm was purchased by Bart’s greatgreat-great-grandmother in the late 1860s. The family has tilled the land with pride and raised quality livestock for seven generations on the rolling hills of northern middle Tennessee and south central Kentucky. Red Hill Farms operates in Macon County, Tennessee, as well as Allen, Monroe and Warren Counties in Kentucky. The family farm consists of 450 Red Angus, Simmental, SimAngus™ and Angus cows, 150 acres of burley tobacco, 100 purebred sows and row crops that support the livestock enterprises. The cattle operation utilizes artificial insemination, embryo transfer, extensive performance records and DNA analysis to produce bulls and females for their annual sales held the last Saturday in October and the third Saturday in March.
