Peel Dream Magazine is the musical vehicle for NYC's Joe Stevens, who launched the band in 2018 with the critically acclaimed album Modern Meta Physic, a mysterious, liminal tribute to the hazy end of ‘90s dream-pop that found its place on numerous "Best of 2018" lists. Now Peel Dream are back with Agitprop Alterna, an album that pays homage to the fuzzy, mod-ish pop of acts like My Bloody Valentine and early Stereolab, but it's also indebted to stateside bands like Yo La Tengo and Rocketship that were cut from a similar cloth. Agitprop Alterna finds Stevens channeling the collaborative spirit of the band's live incarnation in the studio, deepening the connection between the existential and the interpretive first explored on Modern Meta Physic. It is a rejection of manipulation in all its forms and a buzzsaw against complacency; it's a rare trick to agitate without being obvious, and perhaps that makes Agitprop Alterna the most Peel Dream Magazine-like statement yet.

Michael’s first solo album Flammende Herzen came out while we were recording the album The Man-Machine in 1977. I thought he’d made a great record, and “Karussell” in particular has remained with me to this day. Michael plays electric guitar in his very own, unmistakeable way. The expression of his melodies and the attentiveness with which he harmonizes them impress me over and over again. Even back then, I thought: This is how contemporary European volksmusik sounds. (Jaki Liebezeit’s drumming had that same idiosyncratic swing. And it’s almost superfluous to mention what a success Conny Plank made of the production, as he so often did.) I would have liked to meet Michael in the 1970s, but it was an incredibly busy decade in the Kling Klang Studio and I had no time for communicating with the outside world, let alone collaborating with other musicians. We’ve become friends in the meantime, though. And that’s a very good thing. We talk regularly, often about the ‘hows’ of the industry – specifics like the live business, music production, the technical side of things. What gets exciting is when we turn to the ‘whats’. What lies beneath the surface: the essence of music. My impression of Michael is that he’s a very present person and musician, one who’s always absolutely sure of how his artistic methods lead to aesthetic achievements. He keeps his eyes and his mind open. He has not a drop of misanthropy in him. It’s hard to imagine him bad-tempered or angry. He appears to be completely calm and self-possessed. Perhaps the word ‘serenity’ is the most fitting. And yes, these qualities do carry over into the sound of his music. For me, making music is an interplay of listening, playing, feeling and thinking. I believe it’s precisely that which connects our hearts and minds.

Billy Walton is an accomplished guitar master from the vibrant New Jersey Shore music scene. He earned his stripes in the rock & roll trenches, playing lead guitar for many years with Jersey icon, Southside Johnny. He has also shared the stage with music legends; Little Steven, Gary US Bonds and Steven Tyler, to name a few. The Billy Walton Band grew out of this rich musical heritage, and found its groove when connected with bassist William Paris. With the addition of Tom Petraccaro on sax and Eric Safka on Hammond B3, the band has truly hit its stride. Their efforts met with immediate interest from the fertile British Blues scene, leading to multiple successful tours across Europe and eastern United States. They have a solid, dedicated fan base which is growing quickly. In addition to blues fans, the jamband scene has also embraced the band – hungry for their high energy live shows. The group chose to record Dark Hour in Philadelphia, a city with a rich history of unforgettable music. The album was tracked at Cambridge Sound Studio with Grammy nominated engineer, Jim Salamone (Teddy Pendergrass). For these sessions, the band brought in Bruce Krywinski on trumpet, and drummer Francis Valentino (David Lee Roth Band), to round out the already rich pedigree of musicians. Overview:
A compilation of unreleased material from the Light Sleep and Voice Hardcore sessions alongside specially recorded new material, including cover of “The Void” by The Raincoats. Both formats include a 20 page zine designed by Studio Tape Echo featuring photography from Masayuki Shioda and writing from both Disciples and Phew. It follows on from a limited edition cassette and digital release of Phew’s music on Disicples called Vertical Jamming, which compiled some of the cult Japanese artist’s longform drone works.

“This album is an unconscious sound sketch. It was recorded in Japan from 2017 to 2019, a closed and obstructive time. It is not a presentation of a worldview, but a personal documentary music of the late 2010s. The hidden message of this album is: What a terrible world we live in, but let's survive.” - Phew Phew is a legendary figure in Japanese underground music. Starting out in 1978 fronting one of Osaka's earliest punk groups, Aunt Sally, and going on to collaborate with a whole host of notable names as a solo artist in the 80s, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Conny Plank, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of Can, Alex Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. In recent years she's made music on record or live with Ana Da Silva of The Raincoats, Jim O'Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Ikue Mori, and Yoshimi of OOIOO / Boredoms / Saicobab. For Disciples however, the most interesting aspect of Phew's work is the fact she has made her strongest musical work in the last few years, working entirely on her own. There's a lot of interest from crate-digger type labels in her early 80s new wave oriented work, and the names she's worked with are impressive, but there's no doubt in our minds that her two most recent records, Light Sleep and Voice Hardcore, are modern classics. Originally released across an EP and three splits, and clocking in at 75 minutes of wholly doomed black metal, these five songs together make up a unique full-length listening experience all their own. These works find the project at its most transitional, chronicling a period of time rich with progress in both the spiritual and sonic aspects of the Mizmor journey. Those familiar with Mizmor's past releases may remember the triple cassette Psalter Boxset from 2017, the middle tape of which compiled these songs under the title "Mishlei" for the first time. But when it came to Blitzen Trapper’s newest album, Holy Smokes Future Jokes, front man Eric Earley looked beyond mere existence—or even the end of it—to contend with grander cosmic explorations: namely, the intermediate period between a person’s separate lives on earth, “and what it means to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth,” he explains. Inspired by George Saunders’ 2017 experimental tome, Lincoln in the Bardo and the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Earley’s lyrics take the listener on a wild and dramatic journey through rivers of waist-high water in the aftermath of a tragic car wreck and the hazy morning before a murderous moment, and from getting blitzed to the point of extinction inside a masonic temple to a stop for chips and dip before the apocalypse.

Working extensively with beat programming for the first time, Prekop uses rhythm as a narrative tool, tapping into electronic music’s romantic and emotional qualities. Comma embraces the analogue synthesizer’s often unpredictable nature, imbuing the record with a decidedly organic feel even while working within the relative rigidity of beat architectures. Prekop’s creative process is a combination of preparation and improvisation. Writing sessions for Comma began with an open-ended exploration of sounds and textures from which the first fragments of songs would reveal themselves. The introduction of drum machines and additional synthesizer units to his modular setup shifted things in surprising new directions as he worked to bend them into more traditional pop song structures. OVERVIEW DESIRE [de·sire] (a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen) Bob Moses—the electronic duo of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance—wrote a concept record for the club. Presented over six continuously mixed tracks, Desire is a love tale for the digital age: all about the positives and pitfalls of humanity’s driving wants, especially in these technology-driven times. “Love We Found” opens Desire with a sense of longing and wanting, as Howie sings, “after all this love we found, will you be around?” “The Blame” takes the energy up a notch, realizing the pain from actions taken in the heat of desire. The album reaches its peak energy on the title track, a hypnotic late-night collaboration with Grammy-nominated electronic musician ZHU. The video for “Desire” uses anaglyph imagery to display two different sides of desire, with the press of a button manipulating a beating heart into a burning fire, lipstick into a bullet, joy into despair. It’s a deft and delicate dive into the ups and downs of desire. “Hold Me Up” serves as a light at the end of a tunnel and a testament to hope, while “Outlier” is about the modern-day obsession with projection of an outward image. There’s a lust involved in scrolling through social media—everybody’s life looks more desirable from the outside. “Ordinary Day” rounds out the project on a bittersweet note. Vallance and Howie started Bob Moses in 2012 and signed to Domino two years later. Their 2015 debut album, Days Gone By, featured the track “Tearing Me Up”, which was nominated for two Grammys with the RAC remix taking home the trophy for “Best Remix Recording (Non-Classical)”. The duo, a perennial festival favorite, has repeatedly been minted by Resident Advisor as Best Live Act (2014, 2015). 2018’s Battle Lines spawned the hit single “Back Down”, which led to a performance on Ellen; the record was named one of Billboard’s “Best Electronic Albums of 2018”. Following Battle Lines, Bob Moses released Battle Lines [Remixed], featuring remixes from the likes of Hayden James, Jamie Jones and Cassian, as well as Unplugged, an acoustic EP of songs from Battle Lines and other repertoire favorites.

With the flute in a locked groove it makes way for junkshop percussion to go front and centre - built from a marching drum, a 50p against a glass bottle, rimshots and the maple on maple of drumsticks hit together. Says Ian: “The stripped back swinging percussion of ‘Iko Iko’ by the Dixie Cups and the loud crunchy shaker in Salt-n-Pepa’s ‘Push It’ were both inspirations and I’ve always loved the way Bollywood or William Onyeabor songs would have random laser beams and electro toms popping up. I wanted to mix the street corner with the intergalactic, to take Detroit to outer space.” Cookie Scene comes on yellow vinyl, backed with another new track “Free Breakfast Program”. The Go! Team’s new album is in the works and set for release in 2021.

Taken from Bryony Jarman-Pinto’s critically acclaimed debut LP ‘Cage and Aviary’, “Sour Face” focusses on the wider frustrations of everyday life; “of break ups, environmental issues, the album and myself” she confesses. Alongside a selection of beautifully recorded as-live sessions of album tracks from the songwriter and vocalist, performed with a full band at London’s legendary Fish Factory Studios. “The sessions were meant to feel live, like a performance.” Bryony explains, “All the musicians have put their ideas into the songs, transporting them to somewhere beyond the album versions and allowing them to take on a new life”.
