And Green’s flawless yet impassioned vocals proved him a worthy successor to such legends as Gaye, Mayfield, and Redding. But perhaps the biggest miracle about this record was that, despite having a half dozen producers, The Lady Killer remained unmistakably 100% Cee Lo Green, larger than life and with its heart on its sleeve. For its vinyl debut (that’s right, this Top Ten record never came out on LP), we’re pressing it up on hot pink wax and including an inner sleeve with lyrics. The ramshackle cover art for this 1972 album makes it look like a bootleg, and the rampant misspellings and inconsistencies in the album and song titles make it clear that whoever was in charge of proofreading at the Back Beat label must have taken the day off when the art was circulated. But no matter…seldom has the secular met the sacred with as much emotional force as on O.V. Wright’s A Nickel and a Nail and Ace of Spades. That’s what makes it one of the greatest Southern soul records ever waxed. Mind you, just about any record produced by Willie Mitchell and featuring the Hi Records Rhythm Section and the Memphis Horns will pack a punch. But it’s the raw emotion of Wright’s vocal delivery, the gospel styling stirred in with the pure, pleading anguish, that pushes this collection of songs over the top to sheer transcendence. Record buyers noticed, too; “A Nickel and a Nail,” “Ace of Spades,” and “Eight Men, Four Women,” three of the biggest hits O.V. Wright ever had, were all on this album. We already brought you 29 of the 49 single sides The MG’s recorded for Stax on The Complete Stax Singles Vol. 1; now we’re back with the other 20, assembled—for the first time ever!—after a painstaking search for the best sources available, and, like on all of our singles collections, carefully vetted (by engineer Aaron Kannowski) to ensure that the versions you’re hearing are exactly what disc jockeys were spinning off their 7-inch singles on to the airwaves back in the day. In this case, that means the first 15 songs on this CD/2-LP set are in mono, the last 5 stereo, all discographically documented in meticulous fashion by liner note writer Ed Osborne, whose essay maps every move Booker T. & The MG’s made during the late ‘60s through the early ‘70s and beyond. But most of all, The Complete Stax Singles Vol. 2 (1968-1974) is one incredible listen, featuring such classic songs as “Time Is Tight,” “Soul-Limbo,” “Melting Pot,” their versions of Domenic Frontiere’s “Hang ‘Em High,” The Beatles’ “Something,” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson,” a bunch of hard-to-find B-sides, and more, all played by basically the best band that ever lived! But Richard Thompson’s 1994 release Mirror Blue has a lot more going for it than just that classic. “King of Bohemia” will tease tears from your eyes, and those looking for rave-ups will be transported by Thompson’s solos on “The Way That It Shows” and “Mascara Tears.” It’s one of his best, if most underappreciated records; but Mirror Blue never saw a release on vinyl in the U.S.; and, even though it clocks in at 55 minutes, it was released as a single album in the UK. So, our release rights two wrongs; this album has never sounded or looked as good as it does on this 2-LP set housed inside a gorgeous gatefold jacket. DJ Seinfeld Mirrors Release Date: September 3rd, 2021 Rising to prominence in 2016 as part of the lo-fi house scene alongside producers including Ross From Friends and Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld released his debut album in 2017 which received plaudits from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork to name a couple. Lung’s Tom Sharkett of the band’s desire to keep the momentum going after the huge success of their debut album. 2019’s Incidental Music - a vivacious concoction of krautrock, synth pop and infectious grooves - topped end of year lists, with the likes of Piccadilly Records and Resident both naming it album of the year. However, it quickly became apparent that a repeat performance was of no interest to the band. “At the beginning it felt like every new idea could’ve just been on Incidental Music,” remembers Tom. “They weren’t bad ideas, but they didn’t feel new. I don’t think we knew where we wanted to go but we were 100% sure on it not being Incidental Music part 2.” Things soon burst to life however and a period of profound creativity, musical intuition, bold innovation and near total musical rebirth came forth. “I was in the best place of my life,” says Joe Evans. “I was like a slot machine putting in wellbeing currency and jackpotting this album. Words and melodies were coming so quick and easy. Tom was sending tunes across and I was having a lot of fun playing around with a new way of singing which was freer, more expressive, more instant and more melodic.” The result is a record that is direct, punchy and potent. Merging silky vocals, strutting grooves, enveloping textures, and a sparkling blend of electronic and pop music. “ We thought: okay we’ve done the long sprawling introductions and instrumentals,” says Tom. “So let’s see if we can get the same intensity, energy and layers whilst getting straight to the point.” Joe echoes this. “We wanted to move away from easing people in and grab them by the heart straight away. I reflected on how we played live shows and romanti cised about launching onto the stage in a bundle of energy and starting the party, no messing. The directness comes from making music more intuitively, and more from a place of fun. We were writing music that affirmed how much we missed dancing in sweaty rooms, enjoying the company of a collection of beautiful friendly strangers.” The album documents a period of change for the group. They lost a member in Tom Derbyshire, moved from Manchester to Todmorden and fell in love more with dance music and the shifting sense of community and inclusivity that came with these changes. “We have moved forward from the change with a new energy,” says Joe of Tom Derbyshire’ s amicable exit to focus on filmmaking. “It was a challenge shifting the dynamic but we truly found our stride and Tom Sharkett and I have an absolutely beautiful working rela tionship.” Perhaps most remarkable thing about the album - aside from the unflinching new sonic leaps it takes - is that the band have taken a dormant year void of live experiences, sweaty clubs, or anything resembling fun times, and have made an album that makes that world feel palpable – that you can crawl inside it. “Lockdown gave me the time to pour work into myself and out came this wonderful album,” reflects Joe. “It was strange at first and I missed seeing my mates and having a laugh and dancing but this album is a direct reflection of creative flow brought on by the space given by lockdown.” Vanities is a very rare beast of a record: a lockdown album that feels bursting with vitality and the love, promise and transcendence of shared dance floor experiences. Just in time for when we crave those the most.

The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process.

On the Water is an addictive ride that demands repeat listens, eagerly awaiting the test of time. To produce these results, Future Islands fleshed out its sound with the additions of cello, violin, marimba, and field recordings. As with their 2010 breakthrough album In Evening Air, On the Water was produced by frequent collaborator Chester Endersby Gwazda, perhaps best known as producer of Dan Deacon’s Bromst. Noted guests include Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, who provides vocals on “The Great Fire,” and Double Dagger’s Denny Bowen on live drums and additional percussion. For all its undeniable weight, On the Water is not a sullen concept album. Every track on the record works both as a contribution to the whole and as a stand-alone pleasure, evident in the insistent throbs, addictive melodies, and stirring vocals of tracks like “Close to None,” “Balance,” and first single “Before the Bridge.” Make no mistake, On the Water is a record that aims to both break your heart and heal your wounds.

LISTEN HERE Sam Prekop’s self-titled debut is a study in pop nuances. Simultaneously transporting the listener from mild climes and swinging palms to darkened skies and wind blown steppes, the record will be easily recognized by fans of The Sea and Cake. Known to many as the singer and main songwriter for said group, Mr. Prekop is assisted on this release by Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo), Josh Abrams (ex-Roots, Town and Country), Jim O’Rourke (Gastr del Sol) and Archer Prewitt (The Sea and Cake). Those expecting to find more of the computer beats and trickery found on The Fawn and Two Gentlemen are in for a surprise. Whilst prevalent on “Faces and People” - (a lucious groove overlayed by cornet and guitar), the computer takes a back seat to real strings, drums, piano, electric piano and organ as well as electric and acoustic bass. The subtle grooves, a trademark of The Sea and Cake records, are still present here as Sam and his band blend West African rhythms with a bit of soul, jazz and pop. The resulting record is something wholly original, elegant and earthy. A cauldren, if you will, of sweet smelling and enlightening stew. So line up, grab a spoon, and dig in. MARTIN SEXTON Martin Sexton’s ability to hone in on defining moments is evident by his latest EP, 2020 Vision. This is Martin’s first release in 6 years, and it is a poetically emotive and an elegantly evocative pandemic scrapbook. The recordings were tracked virtually during lockdown and produced by three-time Grammy-nominee John Alagia (John Mayer, Paul Simon, Lukas Nelson). “In one song, I’m building a treehouse with my son. In another song, I’m crossing America and seeing the beauty in people rising through adversity and loving each other,” Martin details. 2020 Vision snapshots moments of clarity during the pandemic and beyond. The EP’s leadoff single, “Hold On,” is one of those sun-shining-through-the-rain songs. It brims with soul guitar fixings, punchy horns, and a touching narrative of the simple pleasures of spending time with loved ones. The EP’s second single, “Calling On America,” follows in the grand tradition of tender R&B cultural commentary epitomized by soul poets like Curtis Mayfield’s and Marvin Gaye. It’s a scene-setting song panning through visual vignettes of love and harmony while also contemplating division. The song’s purposeful messaging goes down smooth with folksy acoustic guitar, gospel-tinged organ playing, pining pedal steel, and Martin’s trademark honeyed vocals. “Calling On America” is further enhanced by a John Mayer guitar solo, a lyrical but fleet-fingered statement that hits that sweet spot between blues and country. Space Summit is a collaboration between the omnipresent Marty WillsonPiper (ex-the church) and Minneapolitan Jed Bonniwell. Writing the muysic together, Marty handles the luminescent electric guitars and the bass whilst Jed is in charge of lead vocal duties, and lyrics. The music created on Space Summit’s debut album is simultaneously modern and classic dream pop – the subtle shading of dark and light with layered, sonic textures on every track. Conceived in cyberspace, the album is produced by Marty and producer/ engineer Dare Mason who also plays keyboards. Phoebe Tsen sings harmony vocals, Olivia Willson-Piper plays the strings, Eddie John plays the drums and Anekdoten's Nicklas Barker and Sophie Linder play Mellotron. All the usual suspects from Marty’s recent Noctorum and MOAT projects make an appearance. Bringing together musicians from England, the USA, Sweden, and even Borneo where Phoebe lives, is recognition of a new future in music. This album is the first of Marty’s intriguing Sessioneer Series, working with newly discovered collaborators from around the globe.

A few trips to the land of Makossa and many more hours of interviews were necessary to get enough insight to assemble the puzzle-pieces of Yaoundé’s buzzing 1970s music scene. We learned that despite the myriad difficulties involved in the simple process of making and releasing a record, the musicians of Yaoundé’s underground music scene left behind an extraordinary legacy of raw grooves and magnificent tunes. The songs may have been recorded in a church, with a single microphone in the span of only an hour or two, but the fact that we still pay attention to these great creations some 50 years later, only illustrates the timelessness of their music.

Souvenir After meeting Stefan and Sebastien at a PAINT show in Switzerland, the idea for the collaboration was pitched and unanimously approved. That January, Maston made his way to Geneva for a few days of rehearsals, with the whole group then travelling to Tone Boutique in Holland to record with Geluk the following week. Souvenir was recorded over three days, from February 3-6th 2019, live to tape. Album standout “Ghost” is a classic prog-pop stomp, built around a pulsing rhythm section, bouncy organ, and Maston’s lilting vocals. He invites you to take another dose and disappear- “Your chance ain’t comin’ around again for a million years”- he sings, and we believe him. On the ballad “Do You Feel It Working” Frank repeats the title, which serves as a personal mantra. As this meditation slowly builds, we see L’Eclair shine as they strike a perfect balance- complimenting Maston’s vocals, while holding down the groove and bubbling up at just the right moments. “Swiss Franc” is a slow motion dark disco dirge- oozing uneasy harpsichord until the clouds part for the euphoric chorus, only to slide back down in time for the bass synth to drop. It’s a pensive closer to a dynamic and colorful record, covering a lot of ground stylistically while staying focused sonically. There’s an intentional raw edge to Souvenir that was maybe less apparent on earlier Maston projects. He’s a constant tinkerer, a perfectionist willing to spend hours in the studio fiddling over a particular sound. With a band waiting for his direction, though, Maston removed that luxury from the equation. “Not being able to necessarily go back and change things wasn’t easy, but the tradeoff was immeasurably worth it.” Perhaps the desire to endlessly tweak will never leave Maston he is a producer, after all but on Souvenir, spontaneity leads the way. You have to respect a musician willing to leave his comfort zone and try something new. The result is an album as unpredictable as it is flawlessly executed, a delightful and deliriously joyous new project born from an ambitious idea, pursued to perfection.
In 2018, composer/producer Frank Maston was living in Paris, working on new music when he was introduced to Geneva based band L’Eclair. Blown away by what he heard, there seemed to be a mutual understanding and appreciation for that loungey, groovy world of library and soundtrack music from the seventies. An immediate thought occurred to him - what if he could record with this simpatico group backing him up? The result is the colorful and kinetic album Souvenir. For some background - - Maston released his debut album, Shadows, in 2013, and moved from his native Los Angeles to Amsterdam for a several year stint sitting in with Dutch musician Jacco Gardner’s band. It was during this period that Maston wrote and recorded his second album Tulips (2017). Influenced by European film and library music, the largely instrumental Tulips was released to critical acclaim, garnering comparisons to Ennio Morricone, Sven Libaek, & Piero Umiliani. The record was accompanied by several 16mm films directed by Maston, and the LP’s limited private press release on his own Phonoscope label has become highly sought after among crate diggers and collectors alike. Following Tulips, he began producing and mixing records for other artists, including his collaboration with Pedrum Siadatian (Allah-Las) as PAINT, whose first two LP’s were produced and recorded by Frank. In April 2021 Maston released his third album, Panorama, on the legendary library music label KPM, bringing his soundtrack influences full circle and firmly cementing himself as a contemporary composer. Frank is always looking forward while aware of everything he’s already done, and in that regard, Souvenir fits nicely into his oeuvre. He’s an auteur in the truest sense of the word, always looking to break new ground while still having it fit neatly into an overall body of work. Souvenir achieves all of those things, and it also reaffirms Maston’s reputation as a producer of quality. It’s a hi-fi masterpiece, compact at eight songs and touching on everything from Italian soundtrack music, lounge jazz, light prog, and even a.m. pop balladry (with Maston’s first vocal turns since his debut). The overarching theme of this project was to do things differently, and with Maston having recorded and performed his previous albums completely alone, the first move was to try the complete opposite. To fulfill his vision for a lively, full-band effort on Souvenir, Maston enlisted L’Eclair. Hailed by Frank himself as the “greatest living band”, L’Eclair is a young quintet from Geneva, Switzerland, consisting of Stefan Lilov (guitar), Elie Ghersinu (bass), Yavor Lilov (drums), Sébastien Bui (keyboards), and Alain Sandri (percussion). The group’s first two albums, Polymood and Sauropoda had gained them high praise in Europe’s underground circles for their air tight grooves and wise-beyond-their-years chops. Maston’s introduction to L’Eclair was through Dutch engineer and friend Jasper Geluk, who had recorded LEclair's debut, as well as Altin Gün’s catalog. Upon first listen, the wheels in Frank’s head began to turn. Perhaps this was the like-minded group Maston had been looking for.

He’s talking about Lamplighter, the new album from Gerycz/ Powers/Rolin, a trio featuring himself, Columbus hammered dulcimer player Jen Powers, and Cleveland percussionist Jayson Gerycz who plays drums in the indie rock band Cloud Nothings. The group weaves together roots music, free jazz, rock, and drone to create mesmerizing, largely acoustic music that captivates, dazzles, and imparts wonder. Lamplighter is lightning in a bottle - the trio Q[ ÅZQVO WV ITT KaTQVLMZ[ KWVÅLMV\ QV \PMQZ skillset and interplay, which makes the improvisational nature of the compositions even more impressive. “We talked about each piece for maybe thirty seconds to a minute before recording it,” Powers says. They knew they wanted to craft a collection with varied tempi, sonic palettes, and sensibilities, and so would talk about songs prior to recording, if only a little. To give some sense of growth, their previous record Beacon had zero planning - straight jams, only. Lamplighter was recorded at Gerycz’s house in Cleveland - a compound that is
part recording studio, part art studio, part shipping center - over two weekends in the Fall of 2020. From the hours of recordings, \PM \ZQW M`KI^I\ML \PMQZ Å^M NI^WZQ\M [WVO[ to make the most consistent, invigorating collection. Lamplighter begins with the woozy, psychedelic “Rotations,” an extended M`MZKQ[M QV UWWL UMLQ\I\QWV IVL ÆW_ state, but one that adds a kick - literally to the formula. The song begins with an almost traditional guitar passage from Rolin before Powers’ trebly drone emerges. Then come the drums, which, despite their restraint, recall kosmische, free jazz, and rock traditions. “I hit the kick drum on this one,” Gerycz says, noting that their previous recordings had none. “That was a big change for me. This one really fucking rocks.” Other songs like the tight, melodic “June” are as close to classic songwriting as the trio comes, with its guitar chord progressions, cascading dulcimer, and driving drum pattern. There is a magic to these songs - a spark and joy - that makes the collection shimmer and allure. Some of that is due to the well-greased wheels of the Gerycz/ Powers/Rolin machine and some is because there is a clear ecstasy in the playing. Beyond its existence as a thing to be listened to, Lamplighter documents the [XMKQIT [\]_ ٺPWTTa ]VQY]M \W TQ^M U][QKIT collaboration. Through these recordings, we’re able to smear some of that sorcerous powder on ourselves.

On THE FVCKHEAѪTED LVNG, New York visual artist and musician Austin SleyJulian of Sunk Heaven might convince you the lungfish is the spirit animal of 2021. He explains the creature’s significance “Lungfish survive severe drought by laying dormant in dry mud within a membrane until the rain - the emergence of the dormant lungfish from under the drought-ridden mud represents the garish reality of our times, uncovering the thin veil it wore for so long.” On one level, burrowing beneath the soil is a survival mechanism, on another it’s hiding - either way, it testifies to isolation. THE FVCKHEAѪTED LVNG is noisy but lucid, fittingly never falling into tropes or molds of academic experimentalism or no-wave. Within its sounds is a reverence for the body and an entreaty to reason. It isn’t an album that dwells on what’s proper, instead focusing on what is, or what must be. Survival is necessary, as can be extreme lengths. But when the time to break from your timed tomb comes, do you choose to hit the snooze button?
back the mud, showcasing a possible role of creation in opposition to permanent inactivity - music has the capacity to cure alienation, to create solidarity, to pierce a membrane. As the song metamorphoses from a club banger into a gentle, exposed ballad, there’s a break through the surface - “Siphon sound through sleeping crown,” he incants. “High as might I steal your creed, I cut through their scan, their drone, I awaken blank and starved.”
Sley-Julian draws the throughline from dormancy to inequality and societal brutality. The surreal, dub-drenched “A Nameless Influence” nods more directly to the lineage of violence, of the capacity for sleeping minds to become co-opted by someone else’s political agenda, bad actors, especially. “Have you ever seen such a tragic red,” he asks at the song’s beginning, “as time stains on the same mistakes?” Harsh noise pans in and out, left to right in the composition, re-enforcing the song’s central image - “A nameless influence leads me to the West’s din.” Once led there, can Dormancy and what is to be done with it the drowsy individual break through the is foremost in the album’s questioning and static? analysis. FVCKHEAѪTED LVNG - as if the typography doesn’t tip us off - but what is weirdness if not the breaking apart of norms? Even songs like the elegiac “Phoenix,” with operatic vocals by Rachael Uhlir who was a collaborator on the composition, break the mold of classic delicacy. The piece brandishes coiling synths and atonal textures that take the song just a step outside of comforting, allowing for a singular disquiet to exist among the beauty. It’s serendipitous that THE FVCKHEAѪTED LVNG’s release parallels a new wave of cicadas. Cicadas are another species that lie dormant before selfexcavating from the earth, though Cicadas will do it for years at a time rather than in seasons. Their trebly drone cakes the world like few things. There’s a cacophony to it, but within the buzzing timbre is the sound of life. Like cicadas, THE FVCKHEAѪTED LVNG is loud - it makes its presence known, one that finds elegance in its abrasive qualities. Push through a shell or a membrane, and become enraptured by the other side.

Silverfish were Scottish powerhouse vocalist Lesley Rankine, guitarist Andrew “Fuzz” Duprey, bassist Chris P. Mowforth and drummer Stuart Watson. They formed in the UK in 1988 and were key to the Camden “lurch” scene ; Grunge before it was “grunge”. Lesley was a pioneering, outspoken feminist who popularized the slogan “Hips, Tits, Lips, Power”. Not long after their formation, Silverfish gathered a huge following due to their unique sound, which had nods to AC/DC, Dolly Parton, Russ Meyer and the Birthday Party. Their uncompromising sound was in stark contrast to the gentler more commercial sound of other UK bands. Silverfish’s sound owed more to metal, hardcore punk and the industrial sounds of Ministry…demonstrated by Al Jourgensen remixing their 2003 single “Crazy”. What they were doing, was raw….Fuzz’s manic combination of phaser and fuzzbox backed up by Chris’ thick and juicy basslines and Stu’s sturdy economical drum beats topped off by Lesley’s unique vocals and the ferocity with which she propelled herself around the stage.

*** Deluxe Reissue on Atlantic Blue LP + bonus 7” *** “You free yourself when you take away the script,” says Toronto songwriter Charlotte Cornfield. “That’s where this record came from, dismantling patterns and embracing the process.” The album has a more honed studio sound than her scrappier 2016 release Future Snowbird, and for good reason: it was recorded in 5 different sessions over the course of 3 years. The songs are her strongest and most striking to date - contemplative and contemporary, funny and heart-wrenching - and they’ve got that stuck-in-your-head-for-days quality that Charlotte is known for. “My initial intention wasn’t to make a record at all,” Cornfield muses. “The whole thing kind of happened by accident. I went to The Banff Centre to do a residency and came out with these recordings that I knew I wanted to use for something but wasn’t sure what.” She brought the unfinished songs to her former roommate Nigel Ward in Montreal. “He fell into the producer role seamlessly,” says Cornfield. “We took it slow and just tried things for a while until the vision settled in. There was no rush. It was freeing, and it gave the songs a lot of breathing room to develop.”

Peter Broderick returns with new EP ‘The Wind That Shakes The Bramble’ on 10 September 2021. It’s the mid 1800s in Ireland, and a local poet from Limerick by the name of Robert Dwyer Joyce has written a ballad called ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’: … A bullet pierced my true love’s side In life’s young spring so early And on my breast in blood she died While soft winds shook the barley … The recurring imagery of the barley standing tall amidst the breeze was meant to symbolise the resilience of Irish people amidst oppressive British rule. In 2006, the song title and its theme served as the inspiration for a powerful and heartbreaking film starring Cillian Murphy. Now, in 2021, Peter Broderick pays homage once again, weaving this motif into his latest EP, The Wind That Shakes The Bramble. Following on from his 2020 album, Blackberry, Broderick shares some additional work from the same sessions, as well as a beautiful two-part rework from Bing & Ruth (4AD) and the new 22-minute title track . . . an expansive and meditative ambient odyssey . . . a balm for the baffling chaos of the current era. Broderick’s obsession with and devotion to the Blackberry plant go well beyond his music. Last year, along with the release of the new album, he shared an eight-part video series (Blackberry Diaries) in which he demonstrated all the different uses of this incredible, ubiquitous plant . . . everything from Blackberry jam to weaving baskets and hats with the Bramble vines . . . from making tea of out the young leaves to making artwork with late-season berries past their prime. He draws attention to the fact that the Blackberry plant itself is an incredible symbol of resilience. It weaves itself all through our countrysides, playing an important role in holding the soil together, and also makes its way into our cities, proliferating even in such hyper urban environments as London. And while most modern people have lost the ability to identify the wild plants growing around us, the Blackberry remains a commonly foraged plant all around the globe. It’s as if the more domesticated we become and the more our technology separates us from the natural world, the Blackberry finds its way into the hearts and minds of us humans, reminding us where we come from.

Many musicians took to their craft as a means of solace during pandemic lockdowns by writing music for and of isolation. One such musician, Franck Zaragoza, who records as Ocoeur, took to his studio and composed pieces that came to him with a fluidity, making the lockdown a tad more bearable. However, this new album, Connections, was written with personal connections in mind, which Zaragoza focused on and strengthened during our collective confinement. Norman W. Long is a Chicago-based sound artist. His practice involves walking, listening, improvising, performing, recording and composing to create environments and situations in which he and the audience are engaged in dialogues about memory space, value, silence and the invisible. Long has performed and toured as a member of Angel Bat Dawid and Tha Brothahood, and has collaborated with Dan Bitney and John Herndon (Tortoise), Standing On the Corner, Damon Locks (Black Monument Ensemble, The Eternals), Lia Kohl, and Sara Zalek, among many other artists. BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN, Long’s �rst album released on Hausu Mountain, follows releases on Reserve Matinee. The album compiles two years of recording soundscapes from the post-industrial sites and urban areas of Chicago’s southeast side, presented along with a live prepandemic performance recorded at Experimental Sound Studio in 2019. On BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN, Norman W. Long presents dense collages that highlight the pure textural qualities of the environmental sound he captures: insects and birds chirping, the distant hum of machinery, the resonance of the open space around him, the muted burble of a hydrophone submerged in water. Long manipulates and processes his �eld recordings with a semi-modular analog synth and effects units, transforming familiar sounds into abstracted dollops of pointillist synthesis, abrasive volleys of noise, and stochastic grooves made up of elliptical percussive bursts. While some of his sessions �ow through diverse narratives marked by regular introductions of contrasting tones, rhythmic �gures, and mix-consuming washes of texture, other pieces draw their power from presenting the natural environment without any obvious human manipulation, beyond the subtle murmur of his electronic processing somewhere in the background. The balance between Long’s active recontextualization of his �eld recordings and his decisions to let them breathe in their unmodulated forms casts BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN as a meditation on the relationship between humanity and the forces of nature present in post-industrial urban environments within Chicago’s Black and Brown communities. Norman W. Long’s own statement about BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN, written in March, 2021: “I do not know what it means to listen now. But it is a good question as I sit and listen to a community isolated from the rest of the city of Chicago. I live in South Deering, a community on the south-east side of Chicago. It is a majority Black and Brown community that straddles residential, industrial, and wasted space. Single family homes surrounded by land �lls, factories, rail yards, brown �elds, and un/underused industrial structures. Most work sites are still open (if they haven't been abandoned due to disinvestment). Many in the community have been given essential (sacri�cial) worker status leaving themselves vulnerable to COVID-19 while many others are unemployed due to work stoppages and lay-offs. During the isolation order, I was able to walk and record my local nature trail. This trail opened in my neighborhood last fall. It was converted from an open space wetland/prairie with no community access to Marian R. Byrnes Park on the south-east side of Chicago with walking trails. The prairie is located between a residential neighborhood and a large rail yard. It was my intention along with my creative partner Sara Zalek to lead a soundwalk at Byrnes Park before the stay at home order was implemented. I’ve led several soundwalks here in Chicago and elsewhere. One of the exercises I introduce to the group before we start our walk is a breathing exercise where we focus on our breath by concentrating on our inhalations and exhalations. Before I did any walking meditation or performing, I started with breathing exercises. That was the foundation for my practice of selfcare, listening, composing and performing. Disconnection is a process. That process is fueled by white supremacy and capitalism. African Americans experience and witness this disconnection to our environment, economy, sense of self and place. With these walks we are brought back to our bodies, our time and our space. I invite you to listen as part of the collective �eld because as we listen and sound we expand our awareness of our connection and disconnection. This mindfulness practice of breathing brought me back to the COVID-19 respiratory virus, and the murder of George Floyd. In both of these instances, African Americans are more vulnerable to contract the virus and more likely to be murdered by police. There is also the fact that most areas with high rates of air pollution and toxicity are overwhelmingly poor and African-American or Latinx. When we breathe we are mindful of our mind/ body/land connection, our connection to each other and our connection to those who cannot breathe. We can breathe for them and listen to the streets, the noises and disruptions and join in the chorus that demands justice for Black and Brown people all over the world.”
