THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT got off the ground in the Money Belt, only to find its legs in the Borscht Belt. Musically it has deep roots, from the Southern Delta to the discos of Munich. There’s a kind of folkish inevitability to it, lots of acoustic instruments, on top of each other and side by side. But as much as folk music is the soil all music grows from, it never hurts to have a boiler room. So, there’s always a rhythm section shuffling under your feet here. Written mostly with longtime co-conspirator klipschutz, this LP steps out of Chuck Prophet’s comfort zone (“two guitars, bass, and drums”). After nailing three tracks in S.F. with Grammy-winning alchemist Matt Winegar, Prophet confesses, “We hit a wall. Schedules. Money. Towed vehicles: a thousand large to get one van out of lockup.”

HIGHLIGHTS: ☛ Uncut magazine “Americana Album of the Month” ☛ Shore Fire Media is US publicist. ☛ Brad Paul Media is handling US radio promotion at AAA and Americana. ☛ “Get Off the Stage” from the album was released in January ahead of the album’s announce and included an animated video directed by Kendra Morris (MF DOOM, Czarface, Eli Paperboy Reed).

☛ A live version of “High As Johnny Thunders” from the album was performed on

Southwest Airlines & Luck Reunion’s show “Sites & Sounds,” with Aaron Lee Tasjan.

☛ Engineered and mixed by Paul Kolderie (Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, Radiohead). ☛ Stevie Simkin’s Chuck Prophet biography, What Makes the Monkey Dance: The Life

“The charm of the Lemon Twigs is in the unabashed, theater-kid fun they have with their record collection, an energy that guides their work more than any particular style” - Pitchfork “When I first heard The Lemon Twigs, I felt like I was listening to music from a time that never was. The sound made by these two teenaged brothers distills pop music from the 1960s through a 21stcentury lens.” - Bob Boilen, NPR “The Lemon Twigs blend classic country twang with piano-driven glam, building steadily to a peak packed with an uproarious burst of banjo and guitar.” - Rolling Stone “The main concern, for them, is to keep working, to capitalize on a moment and chase the big, convoluted dreams they concocted back there in Hicksville. It has been a strange enough trip so far. Who knows what weird twists and turns the Lemon Twigs have in store next. But contrary to whatever you might think, they definitely aren’t fucking around.” - Stereogum “Things are most definitely happening for The Lemon Twigs, but this isn’t something they suddenly lucked into: Michael and Brian have been working towards a career in music in one way or another their whole lives.” - Vice

Having both started their careers as creative forces in seminal bands (Eno’s unique synthesizer treatments in Roxy Music and Cale’s viola and bass contributions to the Velvet Underground), they’ve appeared as guest musicians on each other’s records as far back as 1974, the year in which they also made a historic live album with Nico and Kevin Ayers at the Rainbow Theatre in London. They remained ords For The friends, and the year prior to W rong Way Up, Eno produced Cale’s W Dying album. This paved the way for the pair to write and record an album together, notably the first time Eno had delivered a collection of song-based recordings since B efore And After Science in 1977. The resulting album is a triumph for both artists, containing the singles “Spinning Away” and “Been There Done That”.

DENT MAY LATE CHECKOUT

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com “Full speed ahead now, no more looking back.” Dent May confidently croons on his fifth LP, Late Checkout. The un-nostalgic sentiment and sobering clarity of May’s latest body of work signifies the 35-year-old songwriter from Mississippi taking a reflective rest-stop on the winding road of his now decade-long career. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2015, touring his last record Across the Multiverse around the world, and building his own Honeymoon Suite Recording Studio with friends Pat Jones and Michael Rosen, May suddenly found himself with the chance to take his time making a record. Through the dozen thematically-linked tracks on Late Checkout, May grapples with the swinging emotions of our contemporary reality with a rare optimism and distinguished sound.

Bearing the torch of classic American songwriters that have inspired him like Harry Nilsson, Carole King, and Randy Newman, May has gingerly cultivated his iPhone note scribbles and subconscious melodies into songs that could stand the test of time. Leaving the comfort of home-recording, May set out to elevate the production quality on Late Checkout while maintaining some intimacy through sparse arrangements. After writing and performing parts for a bulk of the instruments on the album, May filled out his orchestrations by inviting string players, a horn section, background vocalists, and a pair of auxiliary drummers to play on the album. Contrary to the instant gratification permitted by modern home-recording, May made a conscious decision to slow down and pay careful attention to his songwriting on this album. He began to savor the minutiae of his daily life spent wandering around LA, not getting invited to hang with friends, and waking up in hotel rooms after DJing weddings. May drew on these moments in his lyrics and began assembling ballads at his new studio, mimicking the bittersweet tone and consistent work ethic of Motown. “I’ve been collecting stationery from almost every hotel I’ve stayed at for the past ten years.” May reveals about the album’s opener “Hotel Stationary.” “I’ve always been drawn to the nature of hotels. I think it relates to this sense of always feeling out of place and my constant wanderlust.” On Late Checkout’s first single, “I Could Use A Miracle,” May sings about the desperation of feeling down-and-out against a lush and upbeat pop instrumental. The groovy “Easier Said Than Done” is decorated with bright keys and syncopated drums while May sings about coming to the end of his journey to find love. “Sea Salt & Caramel,” spilled out of May as a saccharine love song to his girlfriend, adding pure sweetness to balance the record’s melancholy pallet. From beginning to end, May bares his soul on each track across Late Checkout, offering a reluctant goodbye to his former selves, before wandering home. orace apscott uintet: The iant Is wakened (Limited Black Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: AUGUST 21, 2020 The title of Horace Tapscott’s debut release is apt, if not self-referential, for indeed a giant of West Coast jazz had awakened with this, the pianist/composer/bandleader’s 1969 album for the Flying Dutchman label. Tapscott went on to form two groups crucial to the flowering of modern jazz in the Los Angeles area, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (or P.A.P.A.; the name is an homage to Tapscott’s predecessor and peer, Sun Ra), which eventually became part of a larger umbrella organization, Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA). Out of UGMAA came a host of LA-bred musicians, singers, and poets, including Arthur Blythe (who goes by Black Arthur Blythe on this recording), Stanley Crouch (who wrote the original liner notes), David Murray, Butch Morris, Wilber Morris, Jimmy Woods, Nate Morgan, and Sinclair Greenwell, Jr. (a.k.a. Guido Sinclair). And anchoring it all was Tapscott himself; as Kamasi Washington, whose vision of a large, Los Angeles community-based ensemble echoes that of P.A.P.A. and UGMAA, said in 2015: “Horace is one of the most important figures in the foundation of music in L.A., from both a purely musically and socially conscious perspective. Our first, neon green vinyl release of this momentous record sold out in a heartbeat; now, we’re bringing it back in a black vinyl edition pressed at Gotta Groove Records, taken from highresolution audio sources and complete with original gatefold artwork. A foundational document of West Coast modern jazz!

CHARLES BUKOWSKI READS HIS POETRY (Limited 100th Birthday Vomit Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: AUGUST 21, 2020 “This is Charles Bukowski. Well, let me just sit here and drink beer. Thus begins the September 14, 1972 poetry reading from which this 1980 release on John Fahey’s Takoma label is drawn. This is quintessential Bukowski, from the rude ‘n’ crude drawing that adorns the front cover to the belches that punctuate the poems. As for the work itself, it’s not really what you’d commonly conceive of as poetry, but rather observations and vignettes drawn from life’s darker side, focusing on perversions, poverty, drunkenness, gambling, and bodily functions. But Bukowski’s bemused air and self-deprecating humor blunt the shock value of the words and emphasize the universality of the themes. “I want you to hate me, he says to the audience, but it’s hopeless—he is one of us. Now, Real Gone is celebrating the 100th birthday (8/16/20 is the date) of this largerthan-life figure with a special “vomit vinyl pressing (of all the bodily functions, this is the one that Bukowski, um, revisited again and again in his writings). Ah, those year-end Bay Area concert runs by the Dead. Seldom was the band quite as consistently brilliant as they were during these celebratory stands, playing in familiar environs in front of audiences full of old friends. The group’s archivists already dipped into this particular set of performances with Dick’s Picks Vol. 5, which captured the December 26 show; this 2-CD set transports us two days later for another superior date which again demonstrates the astonishing degree to which keyboardist Brent Mydland had integrated himself into the band by the end of 1979. Special mention should also be made of the sound, too, taken from the original soundboard concert reels recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and remastered in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman; the booklet features Jay Blakesberg photos from the Oakland Auditorium shows and an essay by long-time Dead scribe Steve Silberman. As for the music, any set that includes “High Time” promises exactly that; “It’s All Over Now” drops a series of “Phil Bombs” right before it. Set two unleashes a medley that goes from revelatory to rockin’ in one time-suspending, hour-plus journey that starts with “Terrapin Station” and winds up with ”Good Lovin’.” The “Casey Jones”/”One More Saturday Night” encore brings the night to a dizzying close, sending the crowd out in the streets for a party that was no doubt just getting started. STREET DATE: AUGUST 21, 2020 The theme song “You’re Dead” to the FX show What We Do in the Shadows has fostered a new appreciation for the singular talent that was Norma Tanega. And it’s high time, too...Norma was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice label, and success was instantaneous: the title song to Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album’s folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, “No Stranger Am I” is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega’s songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience to this day. Our first pressing in green vinyl sold out pretty much the day it arrived in our warehouse; now we’re coming back with a sky blue vinyl edition, reissued in stereo with the original album art intact!

TOM TOM CLUB Tom Tom Club (LIMITED TROPICAL YELLOW & RED VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: AUGUST 21, 2020 The Talking Heads spawned a number of worthy side projects and spinoffs—David Byrne & Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Jerry Harrison’s The Red and the Black—but none were as funky, danceable, and flat-out fun as Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth’s Tom Tom Club. Conceived as something of a larkish break from the grandly realized intellectual and artistic pretensions of the Heads’ Remain in Light record, the duo’s self-titled 1981 debut was recorded in Barbados with Weymouth’s sisters and Adrian Belew and Steven Stanley from the Remain in Light band, and not only spawned a couple of hit singles in “Genius of Love” and “Wordy Rappinghood” but also became, in its own way, enormously influential. This was the sound of downtown New York talking, listening, and rapping to the burgeoning hip hop movement, a hybrid heard in a whole host of acts in the ‘80s and ‘90s, from Madonna to Mariah Carey to the Beastie Boys and beyond. Weymouth and Frantz went on to record several more albums under the Tom Tom Club moniker, but this remains the classic; Real Gone Music is proud to offer Tom Tom Club in a tropical yellow and red vinyl edition that pays tribute to its Barbados roots (and goes beautifully with the album’s colorful cover). Fun, natural fun!

indie vinyl The Shadow is an album of growth. In the years since our previous album SLUFF was recorded, we have toured around the world, honed our musical skills and found our own little place in the music industry - but we have also seen our share of shadows, and it is through acknowledging these shadows that we grow the most. Each song on The Shadow examines an aspect of this growth through a different musical lens, adding up to a series of rock-and-roll vignettes of light, shadow, anxiety and responsibility. Frantic punk-scenes of information overload are contrasted by patient drones of introspection; fun, ear-worm musings of life as a young rock band are juxtaposed with the heavier responsibility of having a voice and not quite knowing what to say. The amalgam of information in the songs is complemented with a blend of sonic perspectives - we threw in all our influences, from the usual suspects of punk rock and new wave to spacedout 80’s balladry, fuzzy garage-metal and psychedelic desert folk (with synths and tape loops added to taste). And with producer Chris Funk leading the way, our somewhat scatterbrained sprawl of musical and conceptual ideas are tied together in an artful way. Chris’ quiet but steady direction pushed us to serve the songs, reigning in the guitar pedal breaks and drum solo freakouts from our live set while leaving just enough unpredictability and experimentation to give the album a liveliness of its own. All of this adds up to a swirling, dynamic, at times disorienting but ultimately honest image of modern life as young, able, and anxious people. In order to grow and create positive change in this world, we have to situate ourselves amidst all this chaos - for us this means providing the catchy choruses and stomping riffs with an edge of self-awareness and confrontation, just as the world can’t become more connected without acknowledging its deep divides. With The Shadow, we draw inspiration from the chaos and contrast, we admit that we only exist as a balance of shadow and light, and we commit to the responsibility of reflection and growth.

GENRE : Electronic FILE UNDER : “P” Prekop, Sam August 10th,21st, 20202020 Sam Prekop’s boundless imagination is guided by his strong sense of melody. RELEASE DATE : July For more than 25 years, as a solo artist or as part of The Sea and Cake, Prekop NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) creates a singular sound that is both inventive and warm. New album Comma takes Pekop’s electronic music experiments in a surprising new direction. Working extensively with beat programming for the first time, Prekop uses rhythm as a narrative tool, tapping into electronic music’s romantic and emotional qualities. Comma embraces the analogue synthesizer’s often unpredictable nature, imbuing the record with a decidedly organic feel even while working within the relative rigidity of beat architectures. Prekop’s creative process is a combination of preparation and improvisation. Writing sessions for Comma began with an open-ended exploration of sounds and textures from which the first fragments of songs would reveal themselves. The introduction of drum machines and additional synthesizer units to his modular setup shifted things in surprising new directions as he worked to bend them into more traditional pop song structures. Drum tracks and emergent rhythms provided the frameworks and narrative sketches to be fleshed out with lustrous widescreen synth pads and ribboning melodies. In approaching his writing with a completely open mind and letting himself be guided by the music, Prekop maintains a delicate balance between composition and chance, control and spontaneity. Prekop’s wide-eyed sense of discovery guides his exploration of beat-driven music, pushing him to use rhythm as a narrative tool and to embrace electronic music’s romantic and emotional qualities. With Comma, Prekop compiles an incredible breadth of ideas into a surprisingly coherent sound-world. It’s a modern minimal pop album that taps into the experimental heritage of the synthesizer. The album places Sam Prekop’s work squarely in the tradition of electronic music pioneers like Brian Eno and Yellow Magic Orchestra who brought together the unrestrained ambition of the avant-garde with the immediacy and accessibility of pop music.

SALES POINTS Sam Prekop is also known for his work as songwriter, guitarist and vocalist for The Sea and Cake. Fans of artistss like Brian Eno & Yellow Magic Orchestra will especially enjoy this album. Prekop is also well respected visual artist whose published, shown, and sold works worldwide, and limited edition postcards featuring his photography (including the image used as the album cover) sold out over night. Shortly following single releases, the album was featured in Stereogum and Brooklyn Vegan, being called “a glistening weightless drift that might soundtrack your daily commute through some futuristic urban utopia.” Past solo releases by Sam Prekop & his work with The Sea & Cake were and remain some of Thrill Jockey’s strongest sales. Comma is more melodic than some of Prekop’s recent work, without abandoning more experimental or ambient moments. “More than 20 years into his career, the man is still keeping it interesting.” - NPR

The Consuming Flame Thrill - 526 3XCD BOX LOT CD

79037H-A52626

GENRE : Electronic / Experimental FILE UNDER : “M” Matmos RELEASE DATE : August 21, 2020 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK)

LISTEN HERE Matmos has a playful nature often lacking in electronic composition, bristling with a palpable sense of wide-eyed discovery undiluted across their 25 years as a band. M.C. Schmidt & Drew Daniel are long-known for their practice of unusual sampling & experimenting with conceptual restrictions. The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises In Group Form is both a tongue-in-cheek rebuttal to the backlash against “conceptronica”, & their most ambitious project to date. The record is oriented around a deceptively simple commitment. 99 different musicians were asked to contribute: they could play anything that they wanted, but the tempo of any rhythmic material had to be set at 99 beats per minute. The resulting album is a three-hour long assemblage that’s a kaleidoscope of genre, mood and density, while all synchronized to a constant underlying tempo. There’s a relentless forward-motion keeping more with traditions of pirate radio and mixtapes than the traditional album format. The Consuming Flame was composed through the act of invitation, and the album’s 99 participants are, even for Matmos, wildly eclectic. Some collaborators have worked with Matmos for years (J. Lesser, Jon “Wobbly” Leidecker, Mark Lightcap, Josh Quillen of So Percussion, Vicki Bennett) & some are near total strangers. There are players from the conservatory-trained world of “new music” (Kate Soper, Bonnie Lander, Ashot Sarkissjan, Jennifer Walshe) & figures from the extreme music underground (Blake Harrison of Pig Destroyer, Kevin Gan Yuen of Sutekh Hexen, Terence Hannum of Locrian), as well as auteurs from the world of “noise” music (Twig Harper, Moth Cock, Bromp Treb, Id M Theft Able) as well as writers (Douglas Rushkoff, Colin Dickey), and conceptual artists (Heather Kapplow). There’s distinguished alumni and contemporary luminaries of electronic music (Jan St. Werner & Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars, Daniel Lopatin, DeForrest Brown Jr., J. G. Thirlwell, Matthew Herbert, Rabit, Robin Stewart and Harry Wright of Giant Swan) & artists associated with indie rock and folk traditions (Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Marisa Anderson), & undergraduates who took M.C. Schmidt’s “Sound As Music” course during the final year of The San Francisco Art Institute’s existence. The resulting submissions were layered onto each other, prompting later recording sessions which then built upon the first wave of contributions. These discrete zones were then collaged into larger & larger units and more contributors were invited to join until, gradually, the “group form” of three distinct hourlong movements emerged. Part exquisite-corpse & part virtual festival, the results retain Matmos’ distinct & unique voice despite the promiscuously open nature of these collaborations.

SALES POINTS One of Matmos most ambitious works to date, it includes 99 different collaborators across a gigantic spectrum of genre, discipline, and instrumentation. Both members of Matmos are active solo musicians, M.C. Schmidt under his own name, and Drew Daniel as The Soft Pink Truth whose Shall We Go On Sinning... came out July 2020 Limited edition 3 disc set also comes in a deluxe triple gatefold package with full color 2x3ft poster. Matmos is one of the most prominent experimental electronic artists of the last decade, with some of the most significant and acclaimed albums in the genre, and their high profile collaborations and shows with artists like Bjork and Kronos Quartet have given them exposure outside of just heady electronic music. “Matmos—are best known as sound explorers and musicians. But they’ve always been gifted storytellers too. The records they’ve made over the last couple decades reflect a boundary-pushing approach to composition, taking and twisting sounds into abstract playful shapes, but the band has never just been about experimentation for its own sake. They’re conceptualists, layering the sounds they choose with weight and meaning.” - Noisey

Sally Anne Morgan Thread

Thrill - 528

LISTEN HERE Sally Anne Morgan is an artist and multi-instrumentalist whose mastery of traditional folk forms is matched only by her ability to push the bounds of those forms into fresh, imaginative pastures. Known for her fiddle playing with the traditional Black Twig Pickers and the duo House and Land, Sally Anne’s debut solo album Thread establishes her as an unparalleled voice in contemporary folk. With a penchant for tuneful melodies, combined with hypnotic rhythms, the result verges on pop. The candor and austerity of Appalachian music serve as the warp to Morgan’s musical tapestries, where strands of psychedelia, rock, and experimentalism are the weft, deftly woven in intricate and beguiling patterns. Centered on interconnectivity and exploration, Thread strings together practices both ancient and modern, and brimming with simple beauties. Morgan’s artistic practices emphasize connections to the natural world and a modern reframing of rural traditions. In her music, her work as a letterpress artist, and on her rural homestead, Morgan implements conventions from bygone eras to craft work that honors and expands on those traditions. Thread traces Morgan’s myriad of influences and their deep connections, from the psychedelic leanings of Trees and the Third Ear Band, to folk singers like Jean Ritchie and Nic Jones, to Kentucky fiddler Clyde Davenport, to Pauline Oliveros and Johanna Brouk, to their roots and circling back again. The process of composing and arranging the songs across Thread found Morgan exploring the depths of her own voice, inspired as always by traditional Appalachian music, but free to explore and abandon any false notions of authenticity. Morgan spins these connections into works all her own, her original fiddle tunes, ethereal meditations, and sweeping ballads standing as timeless as their traditional counterparts. Through her elegant singing, dexterous fiddle, banjo, and guitar playing, and commanding skills as a composer, Sally Anne Morgan has established herself as an artist of singular power and grace. Those powers radiate across odes to those who have come before her, her newfound pasture, and fearless selfexploration. With Thread, Morgan has crafted a work of bountiful splendor.

John Bence KILL

79037H-A52718

GENRE : Experimental FILE UNDER : “B” Bence, John RELEASE DATE : August 21, 2020 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK)

LISTEN HERE John Bence, composer and producer from Bristol, UK, tackles epic narrative themes and uncompromising sonics with a juddering emotional punch thru his work. Written during a residency at Zaragoza’s FUGA space, Bence’s visceral magnum-opus KILL unfurls as a captivating and unnerving three-part suite, which, as Bence explains, “tells the story of a murderer who kills his lover, commits suicide and then accelerates towards God to be judged”. Throughout Bence sings like a man possessed, shifting from aching operatic vocals and Gregorian chant to chilling screams, with symphonic instrumentation pounding, swelling and resolving into transfigurative calm behind him. KILL was originally released on Nicholas Jaar’s Other People imprint and Yves Tumor’s label Grooming, and available outisde the UK for the first time thru Thrill Jockey. Over a handful of releases Bence has already built a striking body of work bound by an incredible clarity of vision. His elegiac works occupy an omnivorous sound-world, assimilating elements of British avant-garde and electronic music, classical tradition and sacred medieval song into cavernous, sepulchral compositions. Struggles with alcoholism and addiction found their outlet in brooding chamber atmospheres and caustic eruptions of choral aggression on the macabre KILL. Returning to his first love, the piano, Bence explores the instrument’s deeply emotional qualities. Bence’s approach to writing is deeply intuitive. Music was virtually a second language that he learned from birth. The composer grew up surrounded by music in his family home and deeply immersed himself in Bristol’s underground electronic music scene from a young age, working at a dubplate cutting studio and being a regular punter at dances. These disparate influences were subconsciously ingested and filtered through the composer’s own experiences. COMING SOON : LOVE CD/LP (Thrill 532)

TRACK LISTING: 1. Kill/Aftermath 2. Alone/Suicide 3. Afterlife/Judgement

SALES POINTS “Kill finds [Bence] unfurl a shocking three part movement for vocals, cello and bellicose drums that should leave no one uncertain of his talents” - Boomkat Toured with Liz Harris, Grouper and Xiu Xiu, and performed at CTM Festival, Atonal and Skanu Mezs. KILL was originally released on Yves Tumor’s label Grooming, and to critical acclaim from Boomkat and The Wire amongst others. KILL is released as a special expanded version, pressed on clear vinyl and featuring a full etching on the side B. One of the most exciting new talents in experimental music, big tip for fans of everyone from Mica Levi to Grouper and Xiu Xiu. KILL will be followed by the release of John Bence’s debut LP LOVE, more details to follow. Recorded at ETOPIA, Centre for Art and Technology, Zaragoza, Spain, where Bence held a six-month residency. Release accompained by music video directed and filmed by Joe Hatt and Paul Samuel White. “Wickedly unique and ultra-abstract” - Dazed

Soul Jazz Records Presents

KALEIDOSCOPE New Spirits Known and Unknown

21st August 2020

Soul Jazz Records’ new album ‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ brings together many of the ground-breaking artists involved in the new jazz scene that has developed in the UK over the last few years. Featured artists include Matthew Halsall, Yazmin Lacey, Ill Considered, Tenderlonious, Theon Cross, Emma-Jean Thackray and many, many more in this ground-breaking release. As well as sharing a pioneering spirit in these new artists’ approach to frontier-crossing musical boundaries, a further theme of this album is that many also share a determination to independent practices – and most of these artists’ recordings featured here are either self-published or released on independent labels. While the attention of this new wave of jazz artists up until now has been Londonbased, this album shows how this movement is spread across the whole of Britain (and indeed beyond). ‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ shows that while there is commonality in these artists’ approach to music, there is a wide variety of styles – from deep spiritual jazz, electronic experimentalisation, punk-edged funk, uplifting modal righteousness, deep soulful vocals and much more. Soul Jazz Records’ new release comes as a superb one-off pressing special deluxe triple album edition with a bonus limited-edition single, a standard triple album, and a deluxe double CD pack. This album also comes with extensive sleevenotes, artist interviews and exclusive photography. Soul Jazz records are also releasing an exclusive one-off pressing double-headed 12” single featuring Theon Cross and Pokus to coincide with the ‘Kaleidoscope’ album release.

Following the release of Maya Hawke’s independently released A and B side singles in 2019, she returns with a deeply personal debut full-length album. Hawke, who wrote the lyrics, continued her collaboration with Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, who wrote the music for the album. On creating the album, Hawke says, “This album happened accidentally… Jesse and I started working together accidentally... we kept writing, kept collecting songs because it brought joy into both of our lives. Collecting them into an album and releasing it comes from a crazy, if not pathological desire to share that joy with others. From my point of view, ‘Blush’ is a collection of secret messages, hidden communications with the people in my life. ‘By Myself’ was a secret message to myself, that I hope I’ll receive someday soon.”

HIGHLIGHTS - Maya Hawke is a multi-talented actress, singer and lyricist. Her filmography includes, “Stranger Things,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Ladyworld,” "Little Women" and more - Hawke's first single "By Myself" has received great press from Pitchfork, MTV, Exclaim!, Happy Mag, LA Magazine & more. Past additional press from Vogue, Wall Street Journal, Harper's Bazaar, GQ, Elle, Glamour, Refinery29, TIME and more. - Maya will be on the digital cover of Nylon and will be featured in Bust Magazine TOP MARKETS: NY, LA, Chicago, Brooklyn

ShitKid is back with new full-length album 20/20 ShitKid out August 21 via PNKSLM Recordings (Les Big Byrd, Yung, Hollow Ship, Chemtrails etc), the second ShitKid full-length of 2020 following the Melvins & Paul Leary collaboration LP Duo Limbo/“Mellan himmel å helvete”. 20/20 ShitKid also marks the return of ShitKid as the solo project of Åsa Söderqvist, with bassist Lina Molarin Ericsson leaving after their US tour in support of Duo Limbo. Leaving the grunge-infused rock of Duo Limbo and the pop-punk of 2019’s [DETENTION] behind her, ShitKid’s now continuing down the path of the 2017 debut LP Fish and the This Is It EP, opting for an alternative pop infused sound ranging from synth pop to garage rock, while showcasing her growth as a songwriter and musician. In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of São Nicolau. The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Treblesoaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean émigrés; subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana Do Rosario and Tô-Zé, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose. Forty-four years later the album sounds as fresh as it did the day it was recorded. It is unknown if dutch sound engineer Frans Rolland, who oversaw the recordings, knew he was helping to make history: during these sessions, Joana Do Rosario, whose majestic vocals were crucial to the sound of Voz Di Sanicolau, became the first Cabo Verdean woman ever to appear on a long playing record.

JOHN ROCCA

Variations On A Theeem

▶ Beggars Arkive is excited to reissue the classic Freeez album Southern Freeez - originally released 40 years ago, along with new works by John Rocca. This is a 2XLP, remastered, on marbled and splatter vinyl. The album cover features award-winning Arctic photography by Florian Ledoux. Led by John Rocca, Freeez were a legendary group from London, known as one of the UK’s main jazzfunk bands of the early 1980s…aka Brit funk. Their debut album Southern Freeez was initially released in 1980 and contains the hit song “Southern Freeez” with guest vocals by Ingrid Mansfield Allman. John Rocca initially released the album it on his own label Pink Rythm before being signed to Beggars Banquet. A few years later, they had even more hits. Their biggest, “IOU”, was a #1 club single and was written & produced by renowned producer Arthur Baker with lyric contributions and lead vocals by Rocca and remixed by Jellybean Benitez and Baker. It was a hit in the US & UK and was used in the legendary breakdancing film Beat Street. “Pop Goes My Love” was another hit. Rocca also had a hit as a solo artist in 1984 with “I Want It To Be Real”, and his solo work under the pseudonym Midi Rain reached cult status and led to yet another #1 US Billboard Club Play dance floor hit with “Shine” in 1993. 40 years after the original release, John was inspired to go back to his roots and pulled together some of the work that he had been experimenting with over the years and enlisted some musicians (including his two nephews) to play on the tracks. He has also re-recorded a new version of “Southern Freeez” with himself on lead vocals. While they may not be a household name, if you know, you know. They have been sampled many times, by artists including Jamie xx, Coolio, Brandy, Madlib and more.

“The melancholic suburban soul of ‘Southern Freeez’ never gets tired for me....an album that has remained at the top of my Brit Funk pile!” - GILLES PETERSON

Johnny Winter had a singular career plan: playing music. The lightning-quick guitarist fulfilled that wish magnificently, decade after decade. He performed at a French blues festival only two days prior to his July 16, 2014 death in Zurich, Switzerland at age 70. A guitar hero without equal. Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock. Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Something of a musical child prodigy, he grew up in Beaumont, Texas, on a diet of blues and rock 'n' roll. As a teen, nearly every weekend he would hitch-hike to Louisiana to play in small night clubs. After a short college stint, he gave up his academic pursuits and devoted himself to creating music. This is the first collection of the early years to distinguish between the formative Blues roots and the push to the Rock idiom. It is the best precursor to his breakout disc The Progressive Blues Experiment and the Johnny Winter album.

J. Zunz Hibiscus Rocket Recordings LP (Blue Vinyl) LAUNCH191 5055869572545 Lorena Quintanilla - better known up until this point as one half of Mexican duo ‘Lorelle Meets The Obsolete’ - in her solo reinvention as J. Zunz presents ‘Hibiscus’, her second under this name after 2017’s ‘Silente’. The initial vision for the J. Zunz project was for Lorena to strip her approach down to the basics “I remember I was reading a biography of John Cage and that book detonated something in me. The author was referring to the influence of Buddhism and meditation, and modern artists like Sonia Delaunay, Lucio Fontana, Julio Le Parc, Duchamp, futirism. I was very charged with ideas.” “Lorelle is a collaboration, so every individual idea is transformed into something else. And I love that, but somehow I felt that I needed another outlet. I just needed simplicity.” Yet the strikingly confident and singular ‘Hibiscus’ marks a move on sonically from earlier comfort zones in her work, into minimal electronics, hypnotic repetition and compelling trance states, arriving at a soundworld in which cyclical synth patterns, eerie ambient textures and cathartic vocal exhortations coalesce into a beguiling atmosphere of otherworldly intensity. Although some might hear echoes amongst these songs of the like of Angelo Badalementi’s ghostly raptures, the bleak epiphanies of Nico’s ‘Marble Index’ or Fifty Foot Hose’s spare sci-fi psychedelia, both the approach and the resulting tapestry here are Lorena’s and hers alone. 1. SUNNY DAYS BLUE

CAT NO: BFR006LP (Vinyl) UPC: 5060384618791 (Vinyl) RELEASE DATE: 21st August, 2020 Overview:

Philadelphian multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer SWARVY makes his solo debut on Kamaal Williams's imprint Black Focus with a stunning new EP entitled Sunny Days Blue -- his first release as the primary vocalist. Smoked out sound beds and lofi guitars sit gently with SWARVY’s voice creating a juxtaposition of melancholic, yet sweet, melodies that loop in your mind's ear long after the record stops spinning. "Bones" opens with a stripped-back rhythm section and existential observations referencing the human condition of overthinking, a recurring theme throughout the EP. "Cool", "No Compute" and "Smile" subtly infuse Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop elements, while "New Moon" plays out as a low slung hypnotic hymn echoing gracefully into the record's closer "Ginger"--a meditative ambient spiritual for solo piano. Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2015, SWARVY produced a variety of records via DJ House Shoes's Street Corner Music, Leaving Records and Fresh Selects. His writing & engineering credits extend to dozens of tracks by artists such as Maxo, Earl Sweatshirt, Nia Andrews, Mndsgn, Liv.e and the late, legendary Tony Allen. VINYL

or those who find the passage of time a one-way process of attrition, here’s good news for you. In the eight years since AZITA AZITA’s last long-player, her fevered brain has barely rested, and the proof is a new album of unbounded physical and mental activity, music and entertainment, entitled Glen Echo. The worlds of the previous AZITAs have left their unmisAZITA takable essence. Her singular conception of pop music — the idiosyncratic songs, singing and playing that have graced seven acclaimed releases — is in verdant recurrence on Glen Echo, blossoming anew, cutting sharply in the spirit and image of her ever-evolving, always questioning style. AZITA is, on a very forthright level, a formalist — whether standing the lines or vaulting turnstiles, she’s aware of the proscribed lim-

its to her endeavors. That doesn’t mean she’s gonna heed them so much as add ‘em to the considerations of her art. Writing and arranging on keyboards since the time of her solo debut, AZITA focused on guitars for this set of songs. Not simply for swagger or a fresh approach to soloing, but as part of a way to elide expected singer-songwriter tropes, to democratically populate the sound-stage in equal partnership instead. This is a key aspect of the Glen Echo sound, one that determined another new choice — AZITA playing everything on the album herself! That’s the best kind of democracy. Previous long-players Enantiodromia, Life On the Fly and How Will You? were achieved via close work with players and engineers who took the compositions from the demo to a finished form. Invariably though, something would get lost in the transmigration somewhere. With Glen Echo, AZITA comes through fully, jaggedly, most vividly, owning her intention entirely in the dialogue of singing and playing her rock and rhythm and blues. The lyric sheet is riddled with language that circles, through the many moments of life, aspects of the passage of time, the preempted

dreams and strangeness of the present and the way we invent an idealized past in response to the changes, guiding the narrative... where? It’s all banded together by AZITA AZITA’s wit, equal parts droll and dire, her dispassionate view of fates and outcomes for all of us here together on the planet, textured with unique, cinematic details and sudden dives into a deeply felt, utterly OG sense of soul. In Glen Echo are a multitude of sounds — all the moments in a life: the good time grooves, acerbic exchanges in the street, shifts in community and generosity, moments of loss you know you will carry forever, reflection upon unknown futures and pasts, the dark recesses late at night that echo with a wonder you’ve never felt before. You name it, AZITA AZITA’s got some sweet and sour theme music for it. You’ve left it now, but it’s where you’re from. Take the trip back to Glen Echo — a once per lifetime getaway — fresh springs and summers of ten years ago, or an autumn eve when you were a kid. Or maybe it’s just a synaptic distortion, subbing for what your eyes pass over in the present season. Feel how you want about it, it doesn’t really matter to us; any wind that blows AZITA back into the game is a well one!

After 30 or so previous releases, Laughing in my Sleep represents a stylistic culmination--a synthesis of the many sonic flavors The Cradle has served us up since the genesis of the project in 2013. It is a sprawling, multi-faceted album that will give a first-time listener a taste of everything, from hi-fidelity, lyrical guitar-based music familiar to fans of Bag of Holding, to grimy 4-track drum machine songs a la Sense Stats, to spoken word pieces and voice memo interludes sent straight from a cell phone that may remind fans of the more esoteric live Cradle performances. Likewise, the album is thematically diverse, recorded in the spring of 2018 during a wandering period of frequent travel and change. Songs range from personal to the political, from spiteful to gracious, from frustrated to silly. Never missing, though, is the sense of exploration and wonder that has always permeated The Cradle’s work. “Singer-songwriter Paco Cathcart taps into mysticism... folksy, vaguely fantastical, and so dedicated to the hidden potential of the ordinary that at times it feels surreal.” – Pitchfork “Paco Cathcart’s music finds space in the cracks between documenting the everyday and exploring the otherwordly.” – Stereogum

What is LiteAce Frequency? The Toyota LiteAce van was immensely popular in early 90s Manila, Philippines — beloved for its durability and reliability. For Vex Ruffin, it's more than his childhood memories, “it’s the vehicle that gets you going in the right direction. Hop in and tap into the LiteAce Frequency — it will guide you to the right path.” In between working two jobs and raising a family in the Inland Empire of Los Angeles, Vex cooked up his third Stones Throw LP LiteAce Frequency, a collection of songs influenced by 70s Manila Sound and Pinoy soul. Other ingredients like Japanese funk, Brazilian sounds, and hip-hop made their way into the recipe. "This album is about going with your heart. Follow your heart. Self-love. Positive things. Believe in yourself. Going for it." He compares his music to a kale salad: “It's definitely organic. It’s healthy. There’s not much music like that — healthy music. I’m not perfect — not 100% positive all the time. But my goal is to be that positive influence. When I make the music, it's for myself first and foremost, but it's going to reach people. And it might help them. In the end, I hope that's what it does.”

Grey Dogs is acclaimed producer Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai) and the film’s director David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water, Starred Up). Mixing simple beautiful period music with moody atmospheres, plaintive soundscapes and high intensity action score, this is a journey through the misty glens, dark castles and bloody battlefields of Robert The Bruce’s Scotland (whom the film is based on) which somehow sounds both ancient and modern.

PAT K E E N C E L L S R E MA I N From Eau Claire, WI and now based in Minneapolis, Pat Keen has lived a few lives as a hired gun in bands such as Guerilla Toss, Ryan Power, Wei Zhongle, Ian Sweet and Humbird after cutting his teeth as a bassist and improviser at New England Conservatory. Cells Remain was recorded in Eau Claire, WI with engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Paul Simon). Co-producer/percussionist Shane Leonard (Field Report, Anna Tivel, Mipso), multiinstrumentalist Adelyn Strei (Adelyn Rose, Yohuna, Her Crooked Heart) and contrabass clarinetist John McCowen (Wei Zhongle, Tweakbird) add tasteful momentum with rhythm, woodwind and synth texture. Listening to the record, it’s clear that a well thought-out collaborative arrangement is just as crucial, just as engaging to listen to, as the artist’s solo explorations. That intentional two part process is fundamental to Pat Keen. At first listen it feels like a reckless intake of air rushing up a mountain, throwing off articles of clothing, then standing on top basking in a panoramic view of both the path behind and visions of possibility in the distance; “There is gold in everyone, how we roll around under the sun and every hand is warm sometimes.” As we live and learn, jettison the clutter and hold on to that solid ground, Pat is there reassuring us, “I’m around. Lost and found, I’m around.”

BLITZEN TRAPPER

HOLY SMOKES FUTURE JOKES WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 11TH Singer-songwriters have been tackling existential questions about life and death since time immemorial… or at least the 1960s. But when it came to Blitzen Trapper’s newest album, Holy Smokes Future Jokes, front man Eric Earley looked beyond mere existence—or even the end of it—to contend with grander cosmic explorations: namely, the intermediate period between a person’s separate lives on earth, “and what it means to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth,” he explains. Inspired by George Saunders’ 2017 experimental tome, Lincoln in the Bardo and the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Earley’s lyrics take the listener on a wild and dramatic journey through rivers of waist-high water in the aftermath of a tragic car wreck and the hazy morning before a murderous moment, and from getting blitzed to the point of extinction inside a masonic temple to a stop for chips and dip before the apocalypse.

THE COMEBACK KID LP/CD DC661

KID GORGEOUS AT RADIO CITY LP/CD DC724

Emmy Award winning comedian John Mulaney aims to recapture the magic of that bygone television era when children sang songs about their feelings with celebrity guests on funky outdoor sets with John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch, a television special that premiered December 24, 2019 on Netflix. Now, Christmas is coming again like never before, with physical LP and CD editions of the soundtrack! This includes a special peelable sticker on the cover of the LP edition, allowing children of all ages to pick at it! Who are John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch and what is this album? Well, John Mulaney is a 6 ft tall comedian with many credits and two awards and he was born on a humid August night in 1982. The Sack Lunch Bunch is a group of children ages 8–13, born after the turn of the 21st century, and they are each unique human beings with way more talent than Mr. Mulaney. With the brilliant musical chameleon and Emmy nominated composer Eli Bolin, Mulaney and his co-writer Marika Sawyer put together some songs and then were joined by guests like David Byrne, Tony Award winner André De Shields, Annaleigh Ashford, Shereen Pimentel and Jake Gyllenhaal from the movie Zodiac! The sonic result is this soundtrack album. There are probable hits like “Grandma’s Boyfriend Paul,” inspired by the breezy piano pop of Carole King’s “Really Rosie.” “Plain Plate of Noodles” may be a child’s existential food lament, but you can still dance to its Three Dog Night-inspired funk. “I Saw a White Lady Standing on the Street Just Sobbing (and I Think About It Once a Week)” is a daydream made of the rich major 7th chords of Laura Nyro layered with the warm flugelhorn that seems to whisper “Burt Bacharach.” Calypso, New Orleans jazz, and even the Alan Parsons’ Project’s “Eye in the Sky” make up the DNA of other Sack Lunch songs. David Byrne lent us his time, his voice, and his whole essence for a song that demands the listener “Pay Attention.” Bolin, Byrne, Sawyer and Mulaney wrote it in 2019, but it’s also a nod to a bizarre boy back in the 1980s named John who was thunderstruck by Talking Heads’ “Warning Sign” and its command: “Pay Attention, Pay Attention/I’m talking to you and I hope you’re concentrating.” We hope anyone who listens to this is either a kid who digs it, or if you’re a grown up and can vote and stuff, that these songs take you somewhere familiar in the garage of your mind, maybe back to that time when you were smaller, had no control over your schedule, lived in fear of tarantulas, but sometimes got to rock out to loud pianos and big bright horns.

RECORDS In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, dedicated, in the words of Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension) founder Horace Tapscott, “[to play music} about depicting the lives of black people in their communities all over this country, where it has been turned around and people have been made to feel unworthy.” In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an African-American since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (1971-1975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere.

• A Beyond-Timely Release That Draws a Straight Line Between What Was Happening Then and What Is Happening Now, and Reminds us of the Love and Common Humanity That Binds Us All

We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020…right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson and decorated jazz archivist Zev Feldman, each vinyl reissue features the original black-andwhite Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power that draw a straight line between what was happening then…and what is happening right now.

DOUG CARN Featuring the Voice of JEAN CARN: Spirit of the New Land (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: AUGUST 28, 2020 Of all the artists who recorded for the Black Jazz label, keyboardist and composer Doug Carn was the most prolific, releasing four albums for the imprint. 1972’s Spirit of the New Land was his second Black Jazz release, but the first one (of two) to co-feature his wife, vocalist Jean Carn, in the album title; we’ve chosen to lead with this record from Carn’s catalog not only because it’s the most collectible of the bunch, but also because it showcases his innovative approach of adding lyrics to jazz standards. Thus, both Miles Davis’ “Blue in Green” and Lee Morgan’s “Search for the New Land” are blessed with spellbinding vocals from Jean Carn set to her husband’s words, while Doug Carn originals like “Arise and Shine” and “My Spirit” soar with spiritual fervor on the wings of his wife’s five-octave range. Along for the ride are a stellar cast of players, including trumpeter Charles Tolliver, co-founder of the Strata-East label; saxophonist George Harper, who played with Herbie Hancock and Jimmy Smith among others; trombonist Garnett Brown, who appears on albums by Roland Kirk, Albert Ayler, and Art Blakey among his hundreds of album credits; tuba player Earl McIntyre, whose discography spans from Carla Bley to the Band; and drummer Alphonse Mouzon, founding member of Weather Report. This beautiful, uplifting album comes with a special surprise: liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975, that feature excerpts from a freewheeling interview recently conducted with Doug Carn himself!

THE AWAKENING: Hear, Sense and Feel (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: AUGUST 28, 2020 The Awakening were the only “group” recorded by Black Jazz, for which they made two albums; those two releases happen to be among the most collectible in the label’s entire catalog, which, given the value Black Jazz titles command in the open market, gives one an idea just how sought-after these records are. Recorded in 1972, Hear, Sense, and Feel marked the band’s debut, and featured the same line-up that played on next year’s Mirage. Being from Chicago, The Awakening’s line-up unsurprisingly boasts a heavy connection to the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) collective that claimed The Art Ensemble of Chicago among its most esteemed artists; in fact, both bassist Reggie Willis and tenor saxman/flautist Ari Brown were AACM members and appeared on albums with Muhal Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, and Anthony Braxton among others. The other members of The Awakening, on the other hand, hailed from the city’s soul jazz scene, specifically Young Holt Unlimited, for whom co-leaders trumpeter Frank Gordon and keyboardist Ken Chaney played (trombonist Steve Galloway played on Melvin Jackson’s soul jazz classic Funky Skull). And it is that sweet spot, somewhere between the free jazz and Afrocentric explorations of the Art Ensemble and the rhythm-heavy soul jazz sound being recorded at Chicago-based labels like Brunswick and Cadet, that Hear, Sense and Feel lands. Which explains why this album sells for hundreds of dollars online if you can find it at all. A lost gem worthy of all the attention we think this reissue is going to get!

WALTER BISHOP, JR.: Coral Keys (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: AUGUST 28, 2020 The first release on Black Jazz was by pianist and label producer Gene Russell; for the label’s second release, Russell chose another piano man of impeccable taste, Walter Bishop, Jr. But while much of Russell’s record consisted of songs composed by others, Bishop’s record features all originals, most notably “Soul Turn Around,” a groover that later turned up on Freddie Hubbard’s 1969 LP A Soul Experiment. Bishop had helmed several releases before this one, including dates with John Coltrane bassist Jimmy Garrison and Miles Davis drummer Jimmy Cobb among others, so it’s not surprising he assembled a heavy hitting line-up for Coral Keys, including Woody Shaw on trumpet, Reggie Jackson on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums, and Harold Vick on flute, tenor, and soprano sax. Think Herbie Hancock’s ‘60s Blue Note recordings gently polished with a soul jazz sheen; this is some tasty stuff that’s been hard to find for way too long.

‘All The Time’, Jessy Lanza's first album since 2016's ‘Oh No’, is the most pure set of pop songs that she and creative partner Jeremy Greenspan have recorded, reflective and finessed over time and distance. Innovative juxtapositions sound natural, like rigid 808s rubbing against delicate chords in ‘Anyone Around’, subtle footwork flutter giving a nervous energy to ‘Face’, unusual underwater rushes underpinning ‘Baby Love’. The songs also sound more “live” than ever before. Jessy’s voice is treated, re-pitched and edited on songs like ‘Ice Creamy’ and gestural sounds seem to respond to her lyrics in songs such as ‘Like Fire’, which reward the listener on repeated plays. More than previous albums, the lyrics on ‘All The Time’ became an important focus for Jessy too, channelling the negativity of anger and frustration arising from some significant changes in her personal situation into the text. These lyrics sometimes process raw feelings, which aren't obvious to begin with, but are soon felt, standing in stark contrast to the cushioned settings of the music. ‘All The Time’ has ended as a triumph and an abstracted diary of a sometimes difficult, but enduring friendship and creative relationship, and it’s their best work yet.

ARTIST: KENNÉLMUS

“IF THE MOODY BLUES HAD BEEN STRANDED IN THE SONORA DESERT WITH NOTHING BUT PEYOTE FOR SUSTENANCE, THIS THIS THE ALBUM THEY WOULD HAVE MADE.” - RECORD COLLECTOR Maybe itʼs their proximity to all that funny-tasting cactus, but Arizona has produced more than its share of mind-bending rock combos and Kennélmus might just be the wildest of the bunch. The Chantays sand-wrestling with the Electric Prunes, refereed by Captain Beefheart almost certainly does justice to the mind-bending sound of Kennélmus. “This way-obscure Phoenix band released a late-period psychedelic album in 1971, that by the standards of self-released LPs of the time, was several layers above the usual such offering. The exotic dabs or melodica, zither, and special effects by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ken Walker added a cloud of eeriness; ʻI Donʼt Knowʼ has keyboards straight off the Chantaysʼ surf classic ʻPipeline,ʼ ʻGoodby Pamela Annʼ has scorching psychedelic guitar that sounds like a mating of the Electric Prunes and Haight-Ashbury, and ʻMother Of My Childrenʼ has vocals that sound like a Lee Hazlewood parody.” - ALLMUSIC.COM “This album is excellent, trippy, and mind-bending, with very surfadelic guitars and strange sounds. It is obvious that a lot of thought and planning was put into its production.” - UGLY THINGS

FIELD MUSIC

FIELD MUSIC (MEASURE) TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY REISSUE

Back on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing in 2010, Field Music’s Measure is released on 180g Red and Yellow vinyl. Limited to 500 copies. A landmark in Field Music’s long and varied history, it marked their return from a self-imposed hiatus with a gloriously rich LP that entwined the brother's love of the rock music cannon with a rediscovery of some of pop's overlooked adventurers. Themes disappear and reappear. Some songs flow together, others intrude on each other. There are contradictions and ripostes. There appears to be a great deal of defiance and a fair amount of resignation.

Track listing: A1. In the Mirror A2. Them That Do Nothing A3. Each Time Is a New Time A4. Measure A5. Effortlessly

Can it make sense? Does it matter if there is no sense? What strands can hold together the dissonant funk of 'Let's Write A Book' (a call to arms for the perpetually apologetic), the mutated blues of 'Each Time Is A New Time' (a riposte to misplaced faith in repetition), the chopping and splashing pop driven through 'Them That Do Nothing' (perhaps about a valiant willingness to make mistakes), the multilayered riffery of 'The Rest Is Noise' or the epic found-sound song cycle that starts with 'See You Later'?

B1. Clear Water B2. Lights Up B3. All You'd Ever Need to Say B4. Let's Write a Book B5. You and I C1. The Rest Is Noise C2. Curves of the Needle C3. Choosing Numbers C4. The Wheels Are in Place C5. First Come the Wish

Perhaps, then, the central strand of this sprawling Tusk meets The English Settlement epic is simply that this is the album when the Brewis brothers truly became Field Music. Even on a record as varied as this their sound and approach can still be identified as their own. As David said at the time: "In the past we might not have had faith that it was sufficient just to be us. But now I think we do."

Release date: 08/28/20 Alterity is compilation of fifteen warped, experimental and deconstructed club music tracks featuring artists from almost every continent. It pieces together shared sounds that connect disparate scenes across the globe. The music is fuelled by a desire to dissolve borders and transcend perceived norms to promote the existence of alternate viewpoints, lifestyles and identities. The listener travels to a parallel plane through amorphous techno wormholes, caverns of industrial beat science and colossal panoramas of glistening hyper-stylised trance. Each creation espouses local sounds and adapts global musical styles creating a singular, holistic map of modern dancefloors that champion diversity and inclusivity. The cover art of a manipulated city shows an ordinary urban landscape remodelled as another world. It hints at an endless, borderless macrocosm concealed within. Kikagaku Moyo is the musical union between five free spirits. Go Kurosawa (drums, Vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (Guitar, Vocals) formed the band in 2012 as a free artist’s collective. They met Kotsuguy (Bass) while he was recording noise from vending machines and Akira (Guitar) through their university. Ryu Kurosawa had been studying Sitar in India, upon returning home he found the perfect outlet for his practice. Since 2013 the band has released 4 full lengths, an EP, and several singles. They have toured Australia, the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan extensively. Kikagaku Moyo love to connect with people through performing, whether they are playing in a barn deep in a Swedish forest, on a desolate Mediterranean beach, or beside a sleepy river at 2014’s Levitation Fest they bring out the magic in everyone present.

Their delicate use of melody and soft vocal harmonies contrast seamlessly with fuzzed out sitar riffs and feedback. To Kikagaku Moyo a song is like a breath of wind through the leaves or a fish jumping from the water. Their music is a conversation—sometimes delicate and tender other times explosive, but always human and always changing.

MIKE FAHIE JAZZ ORCHESTRA

greenleafmusic.com mikefahie.com

"… an erudite, witty composer and a trombonist with serious chops." — Stereophile New York City-based trombonist Mike Fahie (Darcy James Argue, John McNeil, Pedro Giraudo) releases the debut album from his steadfast large ensemble, the Mike Fahie Jazz Orchestra. Urban(e) (pronounced Urban, Urbane) presents a marriage of both the jazz and classical idioms. Fahie's stunning arrangements of works by seven composers celebrate the cross-pollination of these two musics, fusing them into one cohesive sound. The ensemble, which has been together since 2012, features eighteen of New York's best creative musicians, including standout soloists Chet Doxas, Quinsin Nachoff, Jennifer Wharton, and David Smith, along with Fahie himself on trombone and euphonium. Urban(e) represents over 200 years of musical invention, interpreted through a jazz lens including subtle undertones of blues, rock, and soul with interpretations of well-known works from the classical repertoire including Stravinsky's "The Firebird", a Bach Cantata, a prelude by Debussy, and perhaps the world's most well-known opera aria, Puccini's "Nessun Dorma."

Manuel Valera New Cuban Express Big Band José Martí En Nueva York

greenleafmusic.com manuelvalera.com

Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Manuel Valera (Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Smith) presents the dynamic debut of his New Cuban Express Big Band. Inspired by José Martí, the famed Cuban writer and independence hero, José Martí En Nueva York features Valera’s song cycle of original music based on nine poems from Martí’s seminal 1891 collection, “Versos Sencillos.” Addressing a range of political and societal issues that are relevant even today, the texts are set for two unique vocalists, Sofia Rei and Camila Meza. Valera uses the broad palette of the big band to express a wide breadth of moods and emotions, touching on traditional Cuban music styles (Danzón, bolero) as well as modern Latin jazz to give Martí’s poetry new life. The album’s large ensemble features some of New York’s best creative musicians, including standout soloists Michael Rodriguez, Roman Filiu, Joel Frahm, and Mauricio Herrera. Produced by Kabir Sehgal and Doug Davis, the album is modern big band jazz with a message. Born out of the crisis of Valera’s loss of his wife to cancer last year, José Martí En Nueva York is a personal cry for freedom, justice, and an expression of passion.

The Danish four-piece Yung are back four years after the release of their 2016 debut LP A Youthful Dream on Fat Possum, which followed a series of EPs that brought them the attention of Pitchfork, Stereogum, NPR, The FADER and more. Now working with Stockholm, Sweden based indie label PNKSLM Recordings (ShitKid, Les Big Byrd, Hollow Ship etc) the band has refined their sound while embracing a wider palette of inspiration, coming through to the other side and reassessing their focus. The first fruit of the new partnership is the Progress 7” which features new single “Progress” alongside the exclusive b-side “New Fast Song”, which showcases the band’s more punk-infused side. “Progress” is also an early taste of the band’s upcoming second full-length which is set to arrive early 2021. Press for Yung “One of the most catchy, yet furious groups we’ve come across since discovering music made with guitars could be as infectious as the pop songs we heard on the radio as small, innocent, wide-eyed children.” – Noisey “incessantly catchy, furious, and melodic punk” – Stereogum “Yung’s music is a space of duality: innocence & experience, beauty & pain, darkness & light” – NPR Music “A band with a distinctive voice, and one well worth paying attention to” – DIY “A dreamy pop-punk lament of a heavily Rx-ed lifestyle.” – The FADER

Led by the exuberant melodies of cross-tapping guitarist Marcos Mena, the duo named standards make ebullient instrumental math-rock whose effervescent riffs teem with enthusiasm for life and music. On the band's debut full-length, Fruit Island, standards deftly retool math-rock's sinister and challenging tendencies into a style that is at once danceable yet still compositionally profound.

LP UPC 6 34457 01029 1

On Fruit Island's lead single, "Special Berry," the duo blends simplicity and complexity into a charming jaunt of nimble fingertapping and agile between-the-lines drumming. Mena's energetic melodies contort and twist expertly into drummer Forrest Rice's bouncing ferocity, the springy grooves of which are equally attention demanding and rewarding. In spite of the band's technical and precise stylings, the strictly instrumental compositions are always catchy and singable, inviting listeners to join the band's dancing fruit mascots whose colorful personalities reflect the music's upbeat nature. Fruit Island's second single, "May," perfectly captures the duo's fruity alternate universe, conjuring images of anthropomorphic melons and berries bobbing along to pleasantly angular riffs and chop-heavy drums.
