PIXIES

Bossanova 30th Anniversary Edition - Red vinyl + 16 page booklet

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Bossanova, Pixies third studio album. Having so successfully helmed their platinum-selling second album Doolittle, the band continued to work with Gil Norton, this time choosing to record in Los Angeles over their native Boston (“Blown Away”, however, was recorded during a European tour in 1989 at the Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin). Their third album in as many years, it was a particularly fertile time for the band with Kim Deal also starting to have success with The Breeders, who released their debut album Pod just a few months prior. Featuring the singles “Allison” (a tribute to jazz and blues pianist Mose Allison), “Dig For Fire” and “Velouria”, plus the first cover to feature on one of their albums (“Cecilia Ann”, originally by The Surftones), Bossanova showed a new, less primal side to the band, with surf and space rock now more prevalent. Lyrically too, Black Francis is even more cryptic with a recurring sci-fi theme throughout, which in turn influenced Vaughan Oliver’s classic planet design for the sleeve. To mark its third decade, 4AD are reissuing the album as a limited pressing on red vinyl with the original 16-page booklet being reinserted, having previously only been available in the UK with the initial pressing of the LP back in 1990. BRONSON BRONSON August 2020 Release Date: July 17,7, 2020 BRONSON, the brand new group by ODESZA and Golden Features, unveils their debut self-titled album on Foreign Family Collective / Ninja Tune. BRONSON is available on clear LP, limited edition black and yellow LP, and CD. GRAMMY-nominated duo ODESZA and acclaimed Australian producer Golden Features have come together to form the powerhouse group BRONSON. The self-titled album BRONSON pushes the soundscapes of their previous projects to explore the darker edges of dance music. The LP features heavyweight collaborations from lau.ra of Ultraista, Gallant, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. The BRONSON album reflects on their respective needs to challenge personal struggles, both internal and external. Moreover, the trio recognized that their own battles were merely microcosms of the surrounding world. The hope was to craft a body of work that was reflective of that duality of lightness and darkness inherent to the human condition. ODESZA and Golden Features hold multiple gold and platinum singles and albums respectively. They’ve remixed and collaborated with the likes of Sia, Regina Spektor, Charli XCX, Leon Bridges, and more. Both have cumulatively reached millions of fans on international headline tours, top-billing festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Outside Lands, and ODESZA has sold out venues like Staples Center and Barclays.

Jaga Jazzist return with new album “Pyramid”, where the legendary Norwegian eight-piece take a deep dive into post-rock, jazz and psychedelia influences. It’s their first album since 2015’s “Starfire”, their ninth album in a career now spanning four decades, but it marks the group’s debut on Brainfeeder, the LA-based imprint curated by Flying Lotus. On “Pyramid”, Jaga Jazzist have crafted a suitably cosmic sound to match their new label home, all the while nodding to forebears spanning from Fela Kuti to cult Japanese composer Isao Tomita. IDRIS ACKAMOOR & THE PYRAMIDS - SHAMAN! Influential jazz collective Idris Ackamoor and The Pyramids return with an epic new opus, ‘Shaman!’, released on 7th August featuring a fresh line-up including original 1970s Pyramids member Dr. Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, longterm associate Sandra Poindexter on violin, Ruben Ramos on bass, Gioele Pagliaccia on drums and Jack Yglesias on percussion. The band transitions from the political and social commentaries of 2018’s acclaimed ‘An Angel Fell’ into more introspective themes. “I wanted to use this album to touch on some of the issues that we all face as individuals in the inner space of our souls and our conscience,” explains Ackamoor. “The album unfolds over four Acts with personal musical statements about love and loss, mortality, the afterlife, family and salvation.” Evolving around Ackamoor’s intricate compositions, the album takes us effortlessly across moods and emotions through a series of expansive, extended pieces. Starting with ritual, soul-searching, and masculine vulnerability on the title track, the band explores timeless existence on ‘Eternity’ and mourns the sudden loss of loved ones in the prescient ‘When Will I See You Again?’, a track which gains new relevance amidst the current COVID-19 crisis. Ackamoor pays tribute to his mentor Cecil Taylor on the angular ‘Theme For Cecil’ and renders homage to the ancestors on ‘Salvation’ and ‘The Last Slave Ship’, recalling the last ship to bring slaves to the US from Africa, the Clotilda. The superb ‘Virgin’ is an anthem of forgiveness, new beginnings and self-healing. ‘Shaman!’ marks another significant landmark in The Pyramids’ discography with the band at the peak of their powers. It is produced by Malcolm Catto at his analogue HQ, Quatermass Studio, in London. Cover artwork features an exclusive new painting by Japanese artist Tokio Aoyama.

Personnel: IDRIS ACKAMOOR: Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Vocals, Keytar Dr. MARGAUX SIMMONS: Flutes, Vocals SANDRA POINDEXTER: Violins, Vocals BOBBY COBB: Guitar, Effects, Vocals, Mbira RUBEN RAMON RAMOS: Acoustic Bass, Electric Bass GIOLE PAGLIACCIA: Drums JACK YGLESIAS: Congas, Percussion

KEY POINTS: • Best album by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids since band’s early ‘70s recordings • Explores introspective themes of love and loss, family and the afterlife across four ‘Acts’ • Produced by Malcolm Catto at his analogue Quatermass studio in London • Featuring original Pyramids member Margaux Simmons and long term band associates Sandra Poindexter and Bobby Cobb

Tracklist: 1CD / 2LP ACT I: FIRE RITES OF PENANCE SHAMAN! TANGO OF LOVE ACT II: A GLIMPSE Of ETERNITY ETERNITY WHEN WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN? ACT III: UPON WHOSE SHOULDERS WE STAND SALVATION THEME FOR CECIL ACT IV: 400 YEARS: THE CLOTILDA VIRGIN THE LAST SLAVE SHIP DOGON MYSTERIES

ARTIST: PSYCHEDELIC SEX KICKS

A TRIPPY SITAR SEXTRAVAGANZA! This 1967 sleazealogue about the sex and drug crazed San Francisco hippie underground is a strange trip soundtracked by the psychedelic sounds of sitar and tabla, backwards vocals, heavy breathing, satanic flutes bathed in tape delay, all underscoring the thoughts and hallucinations of the filmʼs plastered protagonists. Itʼs a sensual, id-shaking, mind-bending experience that may leave you forever changed! Rather than the tawdry wah-wah-ified funk youʼd get with similar films, weʼre treated here to that groovy ʻ60s psychedelic sound of classical Hindustani music. While no one will mistake the performers for Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha, thereʼs a certain primitive charm to their way out Indian improvs. The acid really starts to kick in on “Happening Inside You Now,” when backwards tape loops and delay effects saunter into the experience, and the album continues to get trippier when “Lysergic Sitar Delusions” explodes with heavily reverberated piano and sitar, backwards vocals, heavy breathing and satanic flutes bathed in tape delay. The flutes continue on “Sonic Spiraling” recalling the work of Sun Ra, who wrote numerous compositions for dueling flutes Put all these wigged out sounds and visuals together - especially during the nude dancing scene with Ariel Meredith & The Happy Hippies - and youʼve got a full blown Psychedelic Freak Out. Don't take the brown acid! Otherwise, you may never get off this trip, man.

Allegra Krieger Album Title:

The Joys of Forgetting

M

ost often, forgetting can feel like a failure—a missed birthday or a neglected anniversary. But forgetting can also mean freedom, an unburdening from past twinges of pain. On her debut album, The Joys of Forgetting, Allegra Krieger embraces the idea of forgetting as relief. Growing up in suburban Florida, Krieger was raised staunchly Catholic. Much of her childhood was spent in a church, where she also studied classical piano and sang in the choir. Although she was encouraged to pursue a consecrated life, she chose a different path, dissociating from religion. The following years brought continual transitions of personhood and place. From housekeeping at a Death Valley motel, to tree-planting in Georgia, she explored different sides of herself, chasing ideals yet avoiding certain truths. As she reckoned with her own malleability, she came to understand the value of leaving something behind. The solitude and disenchantment that accompanied this lifestyle gave way to introspection, yielding the songs that became The Joys of Forgetting. Like memory itself, Krieger’s personal growth ebbs and flows across The Joys of Forgetting. She makes for an inviting companion as she connects the nonlinear dots on her journey. She lays her feelings and desires plain as she unfolds them: to find someone to confide in, to talk on the telephone, to catch up with a friend. She learns to seek comfort in patience, finding that affection is easy, but loving takes time. Her arrangements are elegant and unobtrusive, skirting her crystalline voice with acoustic guitar, curling strings, and percussion that gently tumbles. And though Krieger makes a strong case with her Joys of Forgetting, her songs leave a lasting imprint that’s a pleasure to recall over and over again.

OVERVIEW A photonegative of a dance record shaped by a dialogue between shoegaze atmospherics and UK bass music’s ‘hardcore continuum’. We’ve tried to look at the juxtaposition of being comfortable in an often claustrophobic era of unrest both politically and culturally. Tangible space is where this album focuses - it’s about having the last warning on a tax bill and going to a rave. It’s resigned to having a drink while Brexit blares out in the background. Being able to enjoy the sun while another 0845 number rings out on your mobile for god knows what. We wanted to look at singling out those moments when you balance the everyday fuckery you find yourself in with being in a place or a community that resonates with you and eases the burden. We’ve trivially written about debt, fuck it, think about it tomorrow. Explored Brex-IN rather than Brex-IT, imagine joining rather than leaving. Observed how comforting it is having a local to take the edge off while you chat shit to your mate and tried articulating if all of this was any different - would it be as graceful?

Divide and Dissolve are: Takiaya Reed (Black & Cherokee) Sylvie Nehill (Māori) From the early protest songs that came from the violent occupation of Turtle Island (so-called United States), through punk music’s fight against the system, art has always been at the forefront of societal change. Whether that be through pointed attacks or something more existential - sung quietly or performed as loud as can be - music continues to be a spring-board for collective resistance. Even so, few bands use their voice and platform quite as powerfully as Divide and Dissolve. Mirroring the brash, bone-crushing potency of their dynamic Drone music, the formidable Takiaya Reed (saxophone, guitar, live effects) and Sylvie Nehill (drums, live effects) carry their fight and ancestors fight forward each and every day, using the power of their performances to draw attention to the ongoing battle against systemic oppression. The duo returns this Summer with a brand new 7" single, to be released via Saddle Creek’s Document Series*. Consisting of two tracks, the new 7" is as thunderous as we’ve come to expect and precedes a brand-new album - produced by Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra - set to be released later this year. Opening track 'RVR' is three-minutes of menacing guitar riffs that always threaten to explode but never quite let go, while '8VA' grows from a minimal first-half to a colorful closing full of skewed, disjointed sax and inspired drum patterns that lend a whole new depth to the mesmerizing world they create.

"We would like to observe a radical shift in the current paradigm of complacency in regards to oppressive power dynamics, genocide, racism, white supremacy, and colonization,” the band have previously said. “To give weight and validation to voices that are traditionally misrepresented and criminalized before given a chance to speak." In 2020 those struggles have resurfaced in new and continually horrifying ways, however, Divide and Dissolve’s aim remains a simple one: to secure Black futures, liberation, and freedom; demand Indigenous Sovereignty; uplift people of color’s experiences; and destroy white supremacy. * Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. Each release featured in the Document Series is comprised of an exclusive record featuring unreleased music from artists outside of the label's roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist.

Highlights: · The highly praised live album of the Dutch cult ensemble from 2012 finally available on cd & vinyl. · Together with Bohren und der Club of Gore and The Dale Cooper Quartet, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and

The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation through the years have succeeded in creating a brand new genre of music. Time to get absorbed again by this unique and fresh sound.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble’s liveshows were known for their transcendental journeys, mixing live improvisation with the structure form studio album songs. TKDE always worked with a complex live set up, linking multiple laptops, channeling, effects and looping systems to recreate the intricate sound of their music. During the period from 2007 till 2011 many live performances were recorded, and decided was to release a compilation of songs as a live album in 2012. "The album presents a series of tracks recorded from shows over the last five years, doubling as essentially a "best of" and insight into the live TKDE experience. (...) And it is exactly this weaving of disparate threads, often in an unexpected and chaotic fashion, that make TKDE so fascinating." (4.5 / 5 Resident Advisor) "A consistently impressive collection that manages to vividly document TKDE’s spectacular live show" (Cyclic Defrost)

BALDI/GERYCZ DUO BLESSED REPAIR

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com The release of Blessed Repair is a grand experiment for the Baldi/Gerycz Duo. The duo consists of Dylan Baldi and Jayson Gerycz, both of whom are members of the acclaimed rock band Cloud Nothings. With Baldi on saxophone and Gerycz on drums, they deliver an album that steers away from the process of slowly crafting lyrics and instrumental components. This time, their project is grounded in the gravitational pull of both of their instruments; two people creating and releasing tension in real time. Blessed Repair is an album that romps with the spontaneous energy of free-form jazz. Baldi and Gerycz are quite familiar with each other as musicians, proving to be an advantage as they navigate the strange yet exciting new waters of Blessed Repair. Primarily, they work as bandmates in Cloud Nothings, but nothing resembles their improvisational work as a duo. In Cloud Nothings, songs are written beforehand and rehearsed, but as the Baldi/Gerycz Duo, they just play. Which is how the project first came to fruition — they are two friends who organically wanted to see how far they can take their music together.

The project uses two iconically jazz instruments, nudging Blessed Repair into the free-jazz realm. The saxophone soars and tumbles and the drums build and scatter, but both instruments are more linked by their playful experimentation and synchronicity than anything else. While they are fans of improvisational jazz music, neither Baldi nor Gerycz had formal jazz training past high school, making this album authentically experimental for them both. That being said, Baldi does recount that his first official gig as a musician was playing jazz music in the background of a wealthy Clevelander’s dinner party in 2008. The Baldi/Gerycz Duo have taken the opportunity to harness the liberating energy of improvisation in Blessed Repair. And ultimately, they’re two friends exploring and pushing the boundaries of their music.

DAVID GRUBBS & TAKU UNAMI COMET META BLUE CHOPSTICKS BC32 LP AUG 29, 7, 2020 STREET DATE: MAY 2020 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN, ALL OTHER SALES PERMITTED.

TRACK LISTING: COMET META MIRROR AUCTION AT ECHO DECOR NOTHING LEFT TO HEAR BUT THE NIGHT HEART OF THE THRUMMING HOUSE THE FURTHEST FARTHEST WALKING CORPSE IN AN OLD HOUSE

SELLING POINTS: Second duo collaboration by Grubbs and Unami after 2018’s highly regarded Failed Celestial Creatures (Empty Editions) Will appeal to fans of Gastr del Sol, Hontatedori, and Grubbs’s and Unami’s solo work Mysterious and uncategorizable, darkly and deeply musical

Longtime friends and now the most simpatico of collaborators, Comet Meta finds David Grubbs and Taku Unami fully in third-mind territory as they start the conversation anew after their touted 2018 debut, Failed Celestial Creatures (Empty Editions). Comet Meta grew out of concerts in Seoul, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, with ground broken for this recording on a plane 35,000 feet above the East China Sea and in a tiny Risograph studio in Tokyo where they had to be extremely quiet. Those familiar with Grubbs’s and Unami’s extensive discographies know them as folks who like to think and to make on their feet and on the run, with situation and surroundings profoundly generative. The sound world of Comet Meta ranges from pindrop twin-guitar focus (“Comet Meta” and “Nothing Left to Hear but the Night”) and Grubbs’s piano maneuvering in Unami’s electroacoustic forcefields (“Mirror Auction at Echo Decor” and the horror homage “Walking Corpse in an Old House”) to unclassifiable throbs, ceiling fans, and the distant exultation of the crowd at the New York City marathon. You would be forgiven for thinking on occasion of gossamer Gastr-isms. Comet Meta casts a hell of a previously unpronounced spell.

Taku Unami’s work is influenced by science fiction, supernatural horror and weird fiction. He’s the composer of film scores for directors including Isao Okishima and Takeshi Furusawa, is one-third of the group Hontatedori, and has collaborated with, among others, Annette Krebs, Radu Malfatti, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Jarrod Fowler, Toshiya Tsunoda, and Graham Lambkin. David Grubbs has played in Gastr del Sol, the Red Krayola, and Squirrel Bait and performed with Tony Conrad, Susan Howe, Pauline Oliveros, Will Oldham, and many others. He’s the author of the books The Voice in the Headphones, Now that the audience is assembled, and Records Ruin the Landscape.

TOM PRINCIPATO

“HOUSE ON FIRE” Deluxe Edition Originally recorded in 2003, this 2020 deluxe edition features selected cuts from the original release plus two bonus cuts: “Play It Cool” (previously unreleased in the USA) and a stunning live version of “Baptised In Muddy Water”. House On Fire is Tom Principato’s 14th album of 19 to date. Musicians include John Perry bass, Joe Wells drums, Tommy Lepson organ, and cameo appearances by Kevin McKendree piano (Delbert McClinton, Brian Setzer), and Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff sax (Antones house band, W.C. Clark, Marcia Ball).

HOUSE ON FIRE PRESS QUOTES: “…Suffice to say that there’s no shortage of incendiary fretwork here. Some of the tracks are laced with southern funk touches: “‘Til I Get What I Came Here For”, “Apricot Brandy”, and the Crescent City flavored “Voodoo Thing”, and when the focus shifts to a shuffling honky-tonk arrangement of Willie Dixon’s “Crazy Mixed Up World”, a cameo by keyboardist Kevin McKendree, from Delbert McClinton’s band, plays out nicely. House on fire, indeed.”—MIKE JOYCE, THE WASHINGTON POST “Tone, style and a great sense of groove are what fill guitarist Tom Principato’s CD “House On Fire”. This is a tough guitar album with some cool Hammond B-3 underlining it’s musical current. Lots of guitar edge alongside Principato’s low-down vocals kicks the opener, “‘Til I Get What I Came Here For”, into overdrive. This is a cleanly (self-) produced record. The organ is mixed right up front with the perfect frequency of his Tele alongside of the drums and bass guitar. Principato is a cat that has chops provided by the play-every-night-of-the-week club.” —GUY LEE, GOLDMINE MAGAZINE “This one sizzles with the intensity of someone who couldn’t wait to get in the studio and just burn. Check out the big, fat chunky Fender chords and the honking, squawking, and bending of the solo in the opener “‘Til I Get What I Came Here For”. You know he means business right off the bat with nice chickin’ pickin’ and big-time soloing. All in all, this is a fine record with fine guitar playing.”—JOHN HEIDT, VINTAGE GUITAR MAGAZINE “Tom Principato’s voice is smoky, rich and authoritative on “House On Fire”. The truth is, he’s always been good and his musical taste is impeccable. This is tastefull, funky, well mixed blues - full and vibrant. The first tune “‘Til I Get What I Came Here For” jumps out of the box showing off Principato’s driving guitar and tommy lepson on the Hammond organ, with a really uplifting sound. The talented rhythm section is very well matched with Joe Wells drums and John Perry bass. This is good music. Go get it.”—PAULA PHILLIPS, CHESAPEAKE MUSIC GUIDE

“Make the bizarre and uncomfortable accessible, and make the accessible bizarre.” That's bassist Robert Lundberg's accurate summary of the U.S. band JOBS' modus operandi. Rare is the contemporary act who so adroitly keeps the listener off-balance yet riveted with each surprising stylistic pivot and perverse strategy. JOBS' third album, endless birthdays, is the distinctive product of four headstrong individuals—guitarist/vocalist Dave Scanlon, drummer Max Jaffe, violist Jessica Pavone, and Lundberg—with guest appearances from underground music luminaries John Dieterich (Deerhoof), Matt Mehlan (Skeletons), Cyrus Pireh (Skeletons), and Steven Lugerner. None of these musicians has a conventional bone in their bodies. endless birthdays is a bold record in which minimalist composition, mutant techno, rock pyrotechnics, electro-pop, and art song jostle for supremacy. Throughout these nine songs runs a tension between order and artful freaking out. Wrapping up the single release series from Carlton Jumel Smith’s album “1634 Lexington Ave.”, comes the deep beat ballad “Help Me (Save Me From Myself)”. Progressing from moody minor keys towards the bittersweet hopefulness of the chorus, the track sounds like fell from Menahan Street Band’s debut sessions with Charles Bradley and flew across the pond to soggy Helsinki, where Cold Diamond & Mink nurtured it to it’s current glory. The track starts up in classic hip hop soul style, with open drums and cinematic Rocky horns. But after the intro, when the ghost-like piano notes hit, is when the song really gets going. Carlton delivers one of his best dark-end-of-the-street vocals, matching his Timmion debut “I Can’t Love You Any More”. Pratt’s haunting background vocals seal the deal, lifting the chorus to seventh group soul heaven. Whether you’re completing your Carlton single series with this gem or just getting your first whiff of this contemporary soul master, we salute you.

The dark witch doom duo from Osaka return with their new long player produced by Jun Morino in Osaka and it is an uncompromising beast of a record. Recorded under a full moon over 3 intense days, the album has the ‘off the leash’ abandon of ‘Fun House’ era ‘Stooges’ and is marked by a fat dose of doom meets slowed down hardcore punk; filled with loud, ultra distorted guitar, and yet, a surprising amount of melody as well. The guitars are loud and heavily gnarled to the point of chaos. Vocals go from shoegaze melodic to hardcore screams (in fact rarely has a vocalist in this genre screamed so musically as Yuko does) and underneath all this, Chia batters the skins, all rolling and tumbling thunder amidst the riffs. Yes there is a smattering of ‘Sabbathy Wizarding’ of course, but submerged within dark, deep fuzz and punk rock crank and grind. In truth the vibe is closer to both the arty heaviness of early Boris, and the sweet savagery of My Bloody Valentine, than any kind of ‘doom’ tropes. It’s a sound that is undoubtedly BlackLab’s own. So over 8 tracks, clocking in at around 42 mins, you get the current Blacklab world view. ‘ Side A 1. Insanity 2. Fade and Melt 3. Weed Dream 4. Amusement Park Of Terror Side B 1. Forked Road 2. First vinyl pressing is.limited to 500 copies in 2 colour blue & black cosmic swirl vinyl + DLC. 4 musically kindred spirits from Birmingham, Alabama, collectively known as EMBR. EMBR already have 3 mighty EP’s under their belt. All 3 got them on the heavy underground radar. “punishingly heavy with sedated slowness on a level different that most doom out there.” Metal Temple // “a heavy mixture of grunge, doom and stoner rock with a twinge of gothic style delivery” Outlaws Of The Sun // EMBR spent most of 2019 writing 7 new songs for ‘1823’. The album was recorded by Matt Washburn at Ledbelly Sound Studio (Mastodon, Royal Thunder) in Dawsonville Ga. The title ‘1823’ has special significance. It’s not just a numerical title, it has substance. Eric Bigelow (drummer) has been on the list for a kidney for around 4 years. Eric received a kidney transplant in May of 2019. This happened right in the middle of writing the album. The kidney was from a deceased donor and all Eric and Crystal Bigelow (singer and Eric’s wife) know about the donor is that it was a young woman between the ages of 18-23. The album is dedicated to the donor and the surgeons at Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville TN. And what a fine tribute it is. Musically ‘1823’ could be categorized as ‘Doom’. However, on this debut it’s obvious that EMBR have range, drive and a desire to add to the genre, to broaden it whilst staying true to its core fundamentals. Rest assured, the band have all the nuts and bolts in place. Mark Buchanan (guitar), Alan Light (bass) and Eric Bigelow (drums) keep everything tight and weighty. Massive drop-tuned guitars, chest rattling low end, pounding drums, fuzzy distortion, it’s all there. But they also add in synths, a bit of grunge and alt rock flavors. The vocal talents of Crystal absolutely soar and strengthen the music. Her range, patterns and harmonies transport the band’s music skyward. Crystal adds soul and an air of melancholia to the musical creations. If a pointer were needed, think Mastodon meets Witch Mountain with epic sweeps and a shade of gothic drama. Tracks like ‘Prurient’ and ‘Where I’ve Been’ combine thick heavy riffs with Crystal weaving through, powerful and epic, yet soulful and intimate. Musically, the bands core vibe is keep it slow and low’ but EMBR aren’t afraid to mix it up a bit. ‘Stranger’ takes it down, allowing Crystal’s voice to float over the softer elements and riffs in an almost folk-like manner. ‘Powder’ channels throat ripping growls and soaring clean vocals in one loping relentless journey. ‘Eyes Like Knives’ , ‘Your Burden’ and ‘Vines’ are epic doom fests, drenched in gothic veils and dripping with thick distortion. The lyrics are deep and are usually written collectively by Crystal and Eric with one of them sometimes taking the reins on certain songs that they identify with. For instance, Powder is a song Eric wrote about past struggles and trying to power through them with relentless determination and positivity. Prurient was written by Crystal and initially was based on the 2016 movie THE BOY but also was inspired by her past experiences with a haunting figure in her life.

Darren Hayman - Home Time

Fika Recordings LP FIKA079LP 5057805016960 CD FIKA079CD 5057805016991

An autobiographical album about break ups, the record is tender, honest and frequently funny. Darren set an 8 track, acoustic rule for the record. Everything sounds warm, close and intimate. Darren’s own love-worn, London voice is joined on every song by the sweet antipodean tones of Hannah Winter and Laura K, recording artists and songwriters themselves with Common or Garden and Fortitude Valley. The songs for Home Time were written over a three-year period but recorded quickly, and with love, in Darren’s home. Home Time is a fragile, subtle slice of prettiness. Wrap it around you. Reciprocate- Yeah Well Gringo Records LP

CD

WAAT073CD 5055869506793

An untethered, emotive deconstructing of romantic soul ballads played freely at high volume. Interweaving blasts of vibrato style guitar, stirred drumming and expansive bass propel Kett’s emotive, almost strained renditions of self-penned love songs. Yeah Well, the debut album from Reciprocate, is music with soul, rather than “soul music” in the classic sense, but it delivers the same emotional elevations. Kett explains the approach to Yeah Well’s creation, “I write our songs as sort-of ballads, but we disguise that with up-tempo arrangements. We play at high-volume but it's not ever supposed to sound brash or thoughtless, the emphasis is always on playing with good feel and sensitive touch. The intention is it should create a sense of some sort of wrenching emotional drama, and that Marion's long-held bass notes hold your hand through the arrangements, and add a sense of calm and gravitas and clarify that it's songs and not just music.” Yeah Well jumps out as a great rock n roll record. Take the funk-meets-no wave explosion of ‘Marion Andrau’, or the sweet, slightly distorted balladry of ‘Marble Arch’ as a case in point. ‘Yeah Well (Part 1)’ is classic blues collapsing in on itself, ‘Yeah Well (Part 2)’ is a reversed take on electric guitar from another realm which leads into ‘Hold’s bluesy, alt-rock. ‘Tascam’ is something else entirely, all sound manipulation and spoken word introduction. Nothing is as simple or predictable as it seems in the world of Reciprocate and that makes Yeah Well a unique expression of love in rock form. 1. Pray Tell 2. Tascam 3. Marion Andrau 4. Sei Still - Sei Still Fuzz Club LP

FC129V12

5060467885935

400 copies on white vinyl. Though their taut, motoric beats might scream of 70's West Germany, Sei Still are, in fact, a five-piece band hailing from Mexico City. Their machine-like sonic experimentations emerging not out acid-fuelled jam sessions in some underground communal space tucked away in this or that German city but, instead, three friends taking a random trip to desolate Mexican woodland to work on a couple of songs that would end up leading them to start a fullyfledged band. As well as the given indebtedness to bands like Can, NEU! and the minimalism movement, Sei Still say that they also take great inspiration from “Tarkovsky's ‘Stalker’, ‘Easy Rider’ (the concept of the road has always been a present image of our collective imaginary) and the aesthetics of Spanish new-wave bands like Aviador Dro and Décima Víctima.” Now ready to transmit their angular Krautrock to a transAtlantic audience, Sei Still have spent the last few years cultivating a notorious reputation in their native Mexico, sharing the stage with the likes of Stereolab, Kikagaku Moyo, Holy Wave, Institute, New Candys, 10 000 Russos and Lorelle Meets the Obsolete. 1. Servo – Alien Fuzz Club LP

FC131V12

5060467885973

Vinyl limited to 300 copies on black vinyl. French three-piece Servo deal in the kind of dark, psychedelic noise-rock that storms with ease between gloomy, hypnotic moments and bouts of powerful, motorik noise. With a string of singles, EPs and their 2016 debut ‘The Lair of Gods’ behind them, the Rouen-based band release their second album, ‘Alien’. Servo’s sound finds an unstable home between heavy, droning psychrock and gothic post-punk; forlorn, jangling guitars and deep, austere vocals breaking down into piercing blasts of feedback and distortion. Comprised of Arthur Pierre (guitar / vocals), Louis Hebert (bass / vocals) and Hugo Magontier (drums / vocals), Servo have spent the last few years bringing their intense live-show – an assault of trance-inducing noise and blinding flashes of light – to growing audiences around mainland Europe and the UK 1. Autotelia – I

Rocket Recordings LP Indies Only Green Vinyl LAUNCH193 5055869572583 Autotelia - as originally coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi - describes a process by which someone has a purpose in, rather than outside of themselves. Those who are autotelic depend less on external rewards for their satisfaction, being driven instead simply by purpose or curiosity. Such an ethos was the genesis of a new project put together by Tomaga’s Tom Relleen and The Oscillation’s Demian Castellanos. Autotelia’s sound - as chronicled on their debut release for Rocket Recordings - evolved purely of its own volition, as its makers were happy to allow their own chemistry and interplay to take their distinct course. This zen-like simplicity of approach has been more than rewarded, as the impulses and intentions blossomed into meditative extrapolations both sonically rich and spiritually bewitching. Although some observers may able to detect parallels with the blissful drift of Cluster’s ‘II’, the glowing ampstacks of Spacemen 3’s ‘Dreamweapon’ or the becalmed modernism of late ‘70s Eno in these radiant trance states, the core sound of Autotelia remains in splendid isolation, an incandescent and unearthly tapestry of echoes and vibrations channeled direct from the id and the ether, yet one that maps out a voyage sonically between vintage memories and future epiphanies. 01 First Flight (11:30) 02 Red 05 Storm At Tucanae (9:02)

YOUNG JESUS

Welcome to Conceptual Beach

August 14, 2020

• 3rd LP on Saddle Creek • Limited edition green marbled vinyl limited to 150 copies. • LP includes digital download. “ Young Jesus Are Indie Rock’s Great Anarcho-Impressionists” - Noisey Imagine a shoreline alone, carved from the continent, without land or water to border it, a rind of possibility, a moon-colored border between land and sea, knowing and unknowing. This is Conceptual Beach, a place John Rossiter, vocalist/guitarist of Los Angeles-based Young Jesus, describes as his long-time mental refuge, where he imagines himself living—like a medieval, stigmata-wrought hermit—all his needs for okay-ness finally met. Their new album, Welcome to Conceptual Beach, first took form as a physical zine in 2016, when the four members of the band were on their first tour together. At that time, it was still somewhere Rossiter inhabited alone, protective of his solitude. Now, he is allowing others to join him there. “The reason it’s called Welcome to… [Conceptual Beach] is because I’m inviting other inner landscapes into it,” Rossiter explains as he describes the transformation of the beach’s terrain into a whole varied emotional world. Indeed, Welcome to Conceptual Beach elucidates the balance between many contrasting forces: the individual and the collective, the rational and the emotive, the tame and wild. It transforms the complex musicality of much post- and math-rock into a radical, crystalline practice, vibrant and light-casting. The band’s members––including Marcel Borbon (bass), Eric Shevrin (keys), and Kern Haug (drums) in addition to Rossiter himself––refract and reconnect throughout the record, experimenting with new kinds of sounds and composition. They artfully balance the wandering riffs of previous records with irresistible hooks, woven into their characteristic swathes of improvisation to create a shimmering, molten tapestry. “Faith,” the opening track, runs parallel to the album as a whole: dynamic and groovy and psychedelic and emotional. Each musician has a moment to shine and to speak. Opening with Kern’s version of the Purdie Shuffle, to Marcel’s polyrhythmic bass, to Eric's organ solo, and held together by John's whispered prayer that, “we just might grow,” Young Jesus offer a music uniquely in service to emotion. “(un)Knowing” is a “meditation celebration,” a song about the confusion and pain of re-examining a life—of committing to a life of experience and curiosity. Mixing the spirit and experimentation of OK Computer with the sincerity of Bon Iver, “Root and Crown” is the first song that offers a way out of the traps and patterns of a life. A commitment to grieving, listening, and growing. A devotion to spring, sung from the depths of winter. Whether it’s a bank-vault-turned-concert-hall in San Francisco, a Brooklyn artists’ collective, a house show in central Connecticut, or a recording studio, a Young Jesus performance is unique and unrepeatable. Recordings are only snapshots of their songs in a given moment. Over dozens of shows, a single song will metamorphosize each time it’s played, taking on infinite new geometries. When they play live, their jamming—a self-selected, unaffected and doggedly genuine term for their complex improvisations—is a visceral, communal experience. They render sound an instinct, filling the space with urgency and joy. The intensity of feeling and connection between the band members and to their music is a thick, palpable force that sweeps audiences up, propelling them into uncharted territories. On Welcome to Conceptual Beach, Young Jesus pries our sobs from parentheticals and wields them with a brutal but tender force. They take these elements and translate them into a spacious ground for growth, for ourselves, our communities, our world. They affirm that change starts with how we reckon with ourselves as individuals, that we are all magicians, as the closing track of Welcome to Conceptual Beach suggests, “making love and doing dishes,” capable of conjuring new worlds for ourselves, and to live in others’. "A band entering a new chapter, one we're really excited to follow" UPROXX "this whole five EP project might turn out to be a pretty interesting excercise in the malleability of one band" STEREOGUM OVERVIEW João Gilberto — the Brazilian guitarist and singer who innovated Brazilian music in the late ‘50s in part by transposing Afro-Caribbean drum patterns to the right (fingerpicking) hand of the guitar — died last year at age 88. Super João is dedicated to him. Mostly recorded straight to tape by Dave’s Los Angeles neighbor Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), Super João is about beautiful and surprising chord progressions, longform melodies, and nylon string acoustic guitar. Shades of Arthur Russell, Chet Baker, and — of course — João Gilberto abound. ‘Holy Mackerel’ is a beautiful ballad. ‘I Get Carried Away’ feels like if Jonathan Richman drank Richard Brautigan’s blood. ‘You Create Yourself’ is a meditation on choosing to stay alive. ‘Moon, If Ever’ is a lyrical collaboration with surfer/artist legend Kyle Field (Little Wings). With intimate production and understated but deep songwriting, Super João is Life Is What Happens! quietly confident core.

OVERVIEW On All We Are’s third album, Providence, the trio of Ireland’s Richard O’Flynn (drums), Norway’s Guro Gikling (bass) and Brazil’s Luis Santos (guitar) create a technicolor world of love, sex, and dancing. A record made to rekindle their love of playing music, it offers a respite from the gloom, and a healing wondercure for whatever ails. The close friends who make up All We Are coalesced while attending university in Liverpool, despite hailing from across the globe. On their previous record, 2017’s Sunny Hills, Richard, Guro, and Luis had exorcised some of their anxieties, and they returned to All We Are with a new lease of life that wound itself into the music. A retired school building, which Richard is the property guardian of, gave the trio the writing and recording space they needed to go at their own pace.

Providence is an album that takes in all facets of love—from romantic, to posthumous, to platonic—across a vibrant cascade of color and hooks, funky basslines, and electric rhythms. This clearer, more focused pop sound is thanks in part to producer Dave McCracken (Beyoncé, Depeche Mode, Ian Brown of The Stone Roses), who helped the band sift through and find the essence of each song. Where Sunny Hills was the catharsis, Providence is the balm.

Evann McIntosh is only 16 years old, but she's ready to take over the world. In a short time, the singer/songwriter has already built up a loyal fanbase and tons of buzz with her soulful and in-the-now take on modern pop and R&B sounds. MOJO has been in the works since Evann first picked up a guitar at nine years old. She spent her childhood nights recording rough drafts of songs through a USB Yeti microphone in the living room after her family had gone to bed. It was when Evann met producer and now-frequent collaborator Jesty Beatz through Instagram that she figured out how to take her music out of the family room and into the world. In McIntosh's words, MOJO is a fully realized expression of youthful perspective that breaks the mould of modern pop: "The whole album has feminine pronouns being used in the place of a love interest. I wanted to write those songs for the younger audiences to hear, because I think it should be normalized in the pop music you hear today.” With a colorful and impressive debut album already to her name, all eyes are on McIntosh as she hits the studio to work on her next project.

SOUL LOVE NOW: THE BLACK FIRE RECORDS STORY 1975-1993 Strut present the first ever compilation bringing together classics and rarities from the seminal spiritual jazz and conscious soul label Black Fire, covering 1975 to 1993. Formed by DJ and record producer Jimmy Gray in Richmond, Virginia, and following in the footsteps of other influential black-owned independent labels like Strata-East and Tribe, the foundation of Black Fire coincided with saxophonist James “Plunky” Branch returning to the city from New York to form Oneness Of Juju. The band’s ‘African Rhythms’ album in 1975 was the perfect fusion of jazz, deep African polyrhythms and empowering lyrics and bassist Muzi Branch, a trained artist, created the first of many Black Fire handillustrated sleeves for the label’s debut release. The album set the tone for a series of landmark releases on the label including Oneness Of Juju’s ‘Space Jungle Luv’ (1976) and debuts from soulman Wayne Davis (1976) and early go-go pioneers Experience Unlimited (1977). Gray continued to use his influence and strong A&R instincts to bring in more key artists – great jazz players like Byard Lancaster and Hamiet Bluiett, Ghanaian master percussionist Okyerema Asante and collectives including Southern Energy Ensemble and music / drama troupe Theatre West. Due to personal and cashflow issues, many releases had to be canned and only later surfaced on CD during the early ‘90s. TRACKLIST

‘Soul Love Now’ brings together some of the many highlights from the label onto one essential compilation. Opening with Theatre West’s powerful soul message ‘Children of Tomorrow’s Dreams’, the tracks include a Byard Lancaster recording with Tunde Kuboye’s Drummers Of Ibadan in Nigeria and Lon Moshe’s driving jazz dance classic ‘Doin’ The Carvin’ For Thabo’. Wayne Davis brings the explosive gospel rare groove ‘Look At The People’ while Plunky’s JuJu and Oneness Of Juju feature with three tracks spanning their career, including a storming previously unreleased version of the classic ‘African Rhythms’ recorded in DC in 1975. The release features extended sleeve notes features extended sleeve notes around the history of the label alongside interviews with featured musicians. The 2LP format includes a reprint of one of the three original Black Fire magazines published by Jimmy Gray which predated the launch of the label.

TWISTED PINE • RIGHT NOW Praised by NPR for their “upbeat, poppy vibe; energetic, driving rhythms; and virtuosic solos,” Twisted Pine will release their sophomore fulllength Right Now on August 14, 2020 (Signature Sounds). Exploring a sound they call Americana funk, Twisted Pine takes traditional music in exhilarating directions. Bassist Chris Sartori writes, “This album is easier to feel than describe. We’re rooted in bluegrass, continually inspired by explorers like Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, and Sierra Hull. Right Now takes this heritage into a new dimension. Our bluegrass is jazzy, our indie folk is poppy, our grooves are funky.” Twisted Pine [Kathleen Parks, fiddle; Dan Bui, mandolin; Chris Sartori, bass; Anh Phung, flute] grooves with fearless improvisation and intricate arrangements. “They were once bluegrass,” wrote The Boston Globe, “but ... this Boston band has become something else, a wider version of stringband, boundary jumpers akin to outfits like Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, and Crooked Still.”

“…this is what black metal would sound like if it was from Detroit ’68.” --Jus Oborn (Electric Wizard) In between albums, the band appeared in a Showtime/HBO Nordic TV series White Famous and contributed an unholy single track to the now infamous and groundbreaking shock book Debauched – Witchery & Devilry that documents occult/satanic sexuality in print. Ball worship the wicked womanliness of their High Priestess Satana, Dark Lord of the underworld to her followers and proclaim that it is by order of her that they have performed, recorded, and released this new album. UBER OBSCURITIES OF EARLY AMERICANA! Though more known for their contributions to the psych and garage side of the spectrum, Salem Oregonʼs Garland Records also picked & plucked out some unique takes on country charters and unmatched originals in the late 60s and early 70s. Archived here is a barn load of true Americana, from unheard originals like Cascade Sweetheartsʼ “Hard Workinʼ Woman” to stunning takes on Bob Dylan & Kris Kristofferson cuts. This is a PNW platter that youʼd swear came from south of the Mason Dixon.

• A BARNFUL OF UNEARTHED Replete with the sound of steel guitar, classic honky-tonk REELS FROM SALEM OREGONʼS piano, and varying vocal stylings, Snuff Box is a journey GARLAND RECORDS!

through the rustic sound of the PNW featuring 5 cuts making their debut since being put to tape! While the Salem, Oregon area didn't have a huge sixties and seventies country scene, Gary Nieland recorded some great material.

True to form for BeatRocketʼs Garland Records collections is the abundance of previously unissued material, signature covers, and a CD that includes two bonus cuts not available on the LP!

THE LUCKY LOSERS GODLESS LAND

San Francisco’s finest male/female fronted band, The Lucky Losers, release their much-anticipated fourth album, GODLESS LAND. and continue their winning streak with acclaimed producer/engineer and multiinstrumentalist Kid Andersen. After having won “Best Blues-Soul Artist” Indepent Music Award in 2019 for their previous album “Blind Spot,” vocal duo Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz STREET DATE: 8/14/20 (backed by an all-star band) take you on a sumptuous musical journey through the bawdy, jazzy blues of the late 1920’s, the jump swing era of the late 50’s, Chicago and Tin Pan Alley music of the ‘60’s, and finally, the sweet R&B/soul of the early ‘70’s. Berkowitz’s bright tenor voice and big, rich sounding harp punctuates Lemons’ haunting vocals, while serpentine guitar lines, funky organ, and wah-wah riffs bring each song to life. Of its twelve tracks, nine are originals (six by Cathy Lemons, and three by Phil Berkowitz and collaborator Danny Caron) and three are rare gems made for the vocal duet. There is a bewitching balance between Berkowitz’s seductive, introspective songwriting and Lemons’ stark, revelatory commentary on today’s tragic state. 'Prole Art Threat' is producer Anthoney Hart's second LP for Planet Mu under his East Man alias, after 2018's well received debut 'Red White & Zero'. It brings together a set of MCs from all over London, Darkos and Eklipse from East London and Lyrical Strally from near Feltham who were on the first album, Ny Ny and Mic Ty also from East London, Streema and 'Vision Crew' member Whack Eye from Lewisham plus Fernando Kep, an MC from the burgeoning Brazil grime scene. They work across a cohesive set of tight riddims forged from thoughtful amalgams of grime, dancehall and drum & bass. The album takes its name from a Fall song/mission statement of the same title, the band being self-consciously working class and led by a brilliant autodidact in Mark E Smith. East Man relates that the title is to be taken as “a reflection of workingclass creativity and how the establishment marginalise us and (perhaps on a subconscious level) see us as a threat.”

Les Back, author of 'The Art of Listening' and 'Out of Whiteness: Color, Politics and Culture (with Vron Ware)' contributes liner notes to the record: East Man understands the force and the democracy of the mic. Listening to Prole Art Threat is like being at a dance. As the mic is passed between each of the MCs, a different tale is ‘elevated... off the map’ as Ny Ny puts it. We hear instalments from Forest Gate, Lee, Lewisham and Manor Park as these ‘lyrical gaffers’ and ’top boys and girls’ tell tough stories of life under the scrutiny of the ‘Feds’ in a brutal and divided city. The bars and rhymes document what it means to live here; from the double standards applied to the sexuality of young girls and boys to the corrosive violence of everyday life. All this is dissected without compromise. This is not just a London story though, the inclusion of Fernando Kep from the burgeoning Grime scene in Brazil is evidence of the outernational reach of the music. The tracks on East Man’s album explode the wilful ignorance of those who see ‘the working class’ in contemporary London as code for whiteness. This is the sound of a proletarian urban multiculture, made from Caribbean and African influences, sound system culture, pirate radio and the inexorable rhythms of Grime, Drum & Bass, Techno and Dancehall. It is the stirring of the "white" & "black" working classes who are living together and coming together on their own terms in sound. ‘Making music because you love it... what the fuck else could you do?’ as East Man says. The tracks and voices you are holding in your hands are, as a result urgent, vital, as hard nails and twice as sharp.
