Select Press Coverage for Freedom Exercise: “a gem that seems to have been plucked from the same pocket as Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker’s recent work” –Giovanni Russonello, New York Times

C

hicago-area native Josh Johnson’s vital presence in the vanguard of new jazz music is evident by his features on countless critically-acclaimed projects like Jeff Parker’s Suite for Max Brown and Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings. When he moved to L.A. eight years ago, he thought his stay would be temporary. The saxophonist and keyboardist would spend enough time there to learn from his heroes Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, but not a complete geographic pivot. But eight years later, Johnson is still in L.A., where he recorded his debut album Freedom Exercise with three “musically omnivorous” friends (the very quality that inspired him to stay on the West Coast). The songs on Freedom Exercise reflect this idea of genreless exploration — a fluid combination of jazz, post-rock and electronic music. Ultimately, Johnson’s compositions are concise yet expansive, like an intimate gathering in a sprawling city.

“One listen makes it clear that he’s a majestic talent in his own right.” –Jes Skolnik, Bandcamp Daily “He’s the kind of artist who really has a bigger picture in mind so you never get a sense that there’s any showing off here.” –Nate Chinen Bandcamp’s Best Jazz of 2020 Rolling Stone’s Best Jazz of 2020 Stereogum’s Best Jazz of 2020

DARKSIDE is an American rock band formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2011. The group consists of Chilean electronic musician & vocalist Nicolás Jaar and American multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington. Jaar and Harrington first met while studying in Providence through their common friend and saxophonist Will Epstein. In the summer of 2011, they toured Europe and Australia in support of Jaar’s breakthrough debut album Space Is Only Noise. Upon returning to Providence, they continued to write together, releasing their self-titled EP in 2012 and their critically acclaimed debut album Psychic on Matador Records in October 2013. The album was met with glowing reviews, including a 9.0 from Pitchfork and The New York Times calling it “the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch sci-fi movie.” In the summer of 2018, Harrington and Jaar rented a small house on Lenni-Lenape territory, which is present-day Flemington, New Jersey. The group spent a week there, making a song a day. While it would take another year and a half to complete their second album, six songs from the band’s new record Spiral were written and recorded during this initial session. “From the beginning, DARKSIDE has been our jam band. Something we did on days off. When we reconvened, it was because we really couldn’t wait to jam together again,” says Jaar. Harrington echoes this, “It felt like it was time again,” he said. “We do things in this band that we would never do on our own. DARKSIDE is the third being in the room that just kind of occurs when we make music together.”

SUN RA - LANQUIDITY “Enter the sober, tranquil chambers of the next moment. Soft angles of lights into space, chords of blue and gold. Melting impressions of liquid dreams.” Michael Ray, Sun Ra Arkestra Strut present the definitive edition of Sun Ra’s classic ‘Lanquidity’ album from 1978 with brand new 4LP box set and 2CD editions. Recorded overnight at Bob Bank’s Blank Tapes on 17th July 1978 after the Arkestra had appeared on Saturday Night Live, the album is unique in the Ra catalogue. “Most critics felt that it was more of a fusion-inspired record,” explains Michael Ray. “As the name suggests, the album is liquid and languid.” Bob Blank continues, “Musically, it was very ad hoc and freeform. There were horn charts but most tracks came out of improvised jams. Sun Ra just did his thing.” Comprising five effortlessly fluid pieces, the album eases in with Lanquidity. Danny Ray Thompson remembers, “This was one of Sun Ra’s on-the-spot compositions. It is almost like an Ancient Egyptian Stargazing Ceremony, mapping out the stars and the planets.” Where Pathways Meet is “Sun Ra’s funky version of an Egyptian march. Pharaoh is sending his troops off to fight and this is his pep-talk!” continues Thompson. “The music seems to take different pathways but still converges.” The loping groove of That’s How I Feel, features the reflective trumpet lines of Eddie Gale with solos by John Gilmore and Marshall Allen: “Marshall comes in with that snake charming oboe.” Says Thompson. The funky Twin Stars Of Thence weaves around Richard Williams celebrated elastic bassline while the haunting closer, There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of), is pure “space music.” The poet Mama Nzinga described it as ‘The essence of light. Spirit takes a ride inside the deep dark A1 Lanquidity (8.19) space of just being.” B1 Where Pathways Meet (6.30) The new box set edition of ‘Lanquidity’ features the widely distributed version of the B2 That’s How I Feel (8:03) album alongside alternative mixes by Bob Blank originally released in limited

The first comes in a foil / magenta sleeve while the second features 2 x yellow A4 sheets pasted onto a white sleeve. Also included is a 12-page over-sized booklet featuring unseen photos by Veryl Oakland and liner notes by Tom Buchler (Philly Jazz), Michael Ray and Danny Ray Thompson (Sun Ra Arkestra) and Bob Blank. The 2CD version is housed in a foil digipak.

S

ONNY TERRY and Brownie McGhee were performing together since 1939 - probably longer than any working blues or folk duo or group. The brand of blues that Mr. Terry and Mr. McGhee learned to play has been called Piedmont blues after the region in the Southeast. Unlike the blues performers of Mississippi and Texas, many of whom grew up in rigidly segregated societies and played exclusively for blacks, Piedmont bluesmen often lived near whites and learned to play a variety of tunes - ragtime, gospel, ballads, old minstrel show songs, even white hoedown music in addition to blues. Disc One reflects two separate sessions; the first recorded in the late ’50s and represents their acoustic blues. The second session was recorded in one three hour studio booking in German while on tour. Disc Two consists of two live concerts from 1974 previously unreleased.

ERIKA DE CASIER Sensational Sensational expands the universe of de Casier’s 2019 self-released debut album Essentials. Where Essentials dealt more with the infatuation stages of love, Sensational has more of an attitude, aiming to dismantle the stereotype of single women looking for love, tackling relationship dramas and the toxicity of dating. It was a chance to rewrite scenarios in ways that empowered her, fantasizing about what could’ve been. Sensational was co-produced by de Casier and is a breath of fresh air to anyone with a passion for music in all its genres, as much influenced by Aaliyah and Janet Jackson as house, garage and techno. With hushed, pillow-soft vocals and production that references turn-of-the-millenium sounds, de Casier’s sound surveys the past while looking to the future.

Bills & Aches & Blues In 2020, 4AD turned 40. Never one to be on time for a party, the label is commemorating that landmark this year with the release of Bills & Aches & Blues. The compilation features 18 of its current artists covering a song of their choosing from 4AD’s past: a creative experiment rooted in the spirit of collaboration and a snapshot of 4AD, 41 years after its inception. Bills & Aches & Blues’ 18 recordings contain fascinating connections between artist and track. The earliest song chosen (by U.S. Girls) is The Birthday Party’s ‘Junkyard’, from 1981; the most recent are the two Grimes covers (‘Genesis’ and ‘Oblivion’, respectively by Spencer. and Dry Cleaning) from 2012. Suitably, for the one band that bridges 4AD past and present, The Breeders are all over Bills & Aches & Blues They’re covered three times – ‘Cannonball’ by Tune-Yards, ‘Mountain Battles’ by Bradford Cox of Deerhunter and ‘Off You’ by Big Thief, whilst The Breeders cover ‘The Dirt Eaters’ by their ‘90s contemporaries His Name Is Alive. Landmark songs such as ‘Cannonball’, ‘Song To The Siren’ and Pixies’ ‘Where is My Mind?’, will feel comfortable to casual fans, however by contrast, much joy can be found in the album’s surprise choices, such as Air Miami’s ‘Seabird’ and the Lush B-side ‘Sunbathing’, covered respectively by new signings Maria Somerville and Jenny Hval.

Bills & Aches & Blues is named, arguably (as Elizabeth Fraser never published the lyrics) after the opening line of Cocteau Twins ‘Cherry-Coloured Funk’. Perhaps too unique and uncoverable in their own right, their legendary take on Tim Buckley’s ‘Song To The Siren’, under the name This Mortal Coil (along with Buckley’s pre-Starsailor acoustic version) informs SOHN’s cover.

Some tracks unearth hitherto hidden shared DNA, such as Future Islands’ and Colourbox’s ‘The Moon Is Blue’; other tracks are more akin to reinvention. Aldous Harding distils the melodic essence of Deerhunter’s ‘Revival’ and recasts it in her own uncanny image. U.S. Girls’ future-disco ‘Junkyard’ and Bing & Ruth’s neo-classical instrumental ‘Gigantic’ are even more radical interpretations. Leading off the album, Tkay Maidza brings both her Art Rap and R&B game, but also an unexpected ‘80s synth pop template, to Pixies’ ‘Where Is My Mind?’, a perfect title for these chaotic times.

Blue Reality Quartet! Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA015 // CD&DL available 7/23/21

UPC:195269088682

In 2018, jazz musician extraordinaire Michael Marcus got an invite to bring his duo with drummer Jay Rosen to the Austrian venue Jazzgalerie Nickelsdorf. And when he arrived, the promoter of their show sprung a novel idea on them: performing their set with fellow reedsman Joe McPhee and another drummer. “It was a great concept,” Marcus remembers. “And the chemistry was really good.” So much so that Marcus wanted to capture the sound of this unusual group—two horns and two percussionists improvising without a bass player or a piano or any other chordal instruments—on record. But with the drummer they played with in Austria unavailable to travel, Marcus, Rosen, and McPhee called on their friend and collaborator Warren Smith. And the Blue Reality Quartet was born. The name of this project has a little history behind it and multiple layers of meaning. 20 years ago, Marcus and Rosen recorded an album called Blue Reality as part of a trio with bassist Tarus Matteen. It was another one of those magical sessions with the right mix of players and energy that Marcus always wanted to revisit. But with Mateen busy working alongside pianist Jason Moran, that reunion has been put on the back burner. At the same time, Marcus wanted to use the name of this group to acknowledge the time and circumstances in which the album was recorded. As the front cover should tell you - pictures of each player, their faces covered by a mask, the four men met up in a New York studio in the thick of the coronavirus pandemic. So Blue Reality is a nod to a terrible time in our collective history that had an incalculable impact on the music industry and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people worldwide. to hear Marcus tell it, the chemistry that this group had was so potent that they’re all ready to get back together for another hit. “I think there’s a real mutual love within the group,” he says. “I think there’s a real potential there. It’s really special and really unique and I don’t think there’s anything quite like it out there.” We couldn’t agree more.

Finnish producer Sasu Ripatti has been torching the fringes of electronic music since the mid 1990s, a process that's found him melting a wide spectrum of musical innovation into his cult brand of experimental minimalism. From the skeletal jazz deconstructions of his 1997 Vladislav Delay debut "The Kind of Blue EP" to the blurred dub techno variations of 2000's "Multila" and 2012's "Kuopio", Ripatti has betrayed a restless, voracious passion for sound. "Fun is Not A Straight Line" builds on this impressive legacy, retaining his sonic signature and adding a playfulness that harks back to his beloved deep house smash, Luomo's "Vocalcity".

After becoming frustrated by the inflexibility of the 4/4 house idiom, Ripatti found solace in rap and bass music's rhythmic complexity and anarchic structures. "I bought Nas's 'Illmatic' when it came out in '94 and have more or less been listening to rap since," he explains. "I'm not really sure why now, but that rap influence wanted to come through." Chopped rap vocals, booming subs and gritty, neck-snapping beats are the primary colors of "Fun is Not A Straight Line", painted into the foreground and blended into an immediately recognizable rhythmic palette. The tracks cross into the same continuum as Chicago footwork, with stuttering samples that build thick walls of bass and flurries of wordless rhymes amid a narcotic haze of beats. On 'monolith', Ripatti's love of New York rap is in full focus as he obscures chipmunked vocals with tight, crackling percussion that disintegrates into rolling kicks; 'speedmemories' is even more upfront, channeling the raw sunshine energy of So So Def electro into rhythms that are powerfully skeletal. Elsewhere, syrupy Southern-fried TR-808 bass womps are tangled with molasses-slow vocals on 'videophonekitty', fuzzed into textured, dissociated ambience. Since the beginning, Ripatti has tried to find a balance between his experimental urges and drive to create more universal music. As his more recent albums have traveled into darker, more extreme realms, he has craved something different for balance. By drawing a crooked line between DJ Premier, DJ Screw and DJ Rashad, Sasu Ripatti has emerged with the most accessible and unashamedly enjoyable album he's produced in years.

A champion and mainstay of the NYC underground, Friel the has played alongside the likes of Lightning Bolt and Black Dice as well collaborated with acclaimed string quartet ETHEL. Upper Wilds channels Friel’s unbreakably ebullient spirit into mountainous rock music dripping with molten fuzz. The trio’s exploration of the interstellar expands in parallel to their increasing levels of bombast and precision. Venus synthesizes the experimentation of debut Guitar Module 2017 and the thunder of 2018’s Mars into ten lean chunks of cosmic rock laden with scorching hooks. On Venus, Upper Wilds rocket lovestruck anthems centered around the planet named for the Roman goddess of love at full tilt from the moment “Love Song #1” makes liftoff. The album’s incendiary opening trilogy crashes with a relentless vigor and addictive melodies. The rhythm section of bassist Jason Binnick (who also mixed the album) and drummer Jeff Ottenbacher tear through off-kilter riffs that pound with meteoric impact. Friel’s guitar sputters and froths beneath his voice before soaring into frenetic leads that pack every moment with powerful melody. Alien croons and glitching spasms spill out of Friel’s wild, filtered humming, amplified into oblivion. Venus’ few moments of respite lay bare the raw efficiency and beauty of Friel’s songwriting, like transmissions home to loved ones thousands of miles away slipping through the crackle and chaos of space. Venus traverses the havoc, mystery, and joy of humanity’s countless follies in both space and love. Both cosmic and human, Venus is a deeply affecting celebration of the wonders of what is beyond comprehension internally and externally. GENRE : Rock / Alternative FILE UNDER : i.e. “Z” Zedek, Thalia RELEASE DATE : July 23rd, 2021 NO EXPORT (S. AMERICA EXPORT OK)

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release legendary singer/ guitarist Thalia Zedek’s Been Here and Gone, Thrill Jockey is proud to present the album unlike it has ever been heard before: on vinyl, re-mastered by Sarah Register. Thalia Zedek has been one of the most enduring rock musicians of the past four decades. From her auspicious beginnings in bands Uzi, Live Skull, and Dangerous Birds to her wider recognition in Come, Zedek established herself as a singular voice accruing accolades from critics and contemporaries including J. Mascis, Kurt Cobain, and Bob Mould. Been Here and Gone, her debut solo release originally released on Matador in 2001 on CD, marked a turning point in Zedek’s music. As Come was coming to a close, Zedek began exploring writing and performing as a solo artist, eventually backed by violist David Curry, pianist Mel Lederman (both of which went on to perform with Zedek for two decades), as well as former Come bandmates Chris Brokaw and Daniel Coughlin. The idiosyncrasies of her voice were laid bare for the first time, revealing an even greater depth to her unique songwriting. The more spacious and rich arrangements sprawl and whisper with powerful vulnerability. “There was definitely something magical about the making of Been Here and Gone,” says Zedek. “I’m not sure if it was because it was made at a studio called Higher Power in a recently desanctified church in Stuyvesant, NY, or if it was because it was the end of a century, not to mention a millennium, the end of a decade of being in Come, the longest running band I’d had up to that point, and the end of 5 years of unhappy breakups and tumultuous relationships in my personal life.” The eleven tracks that comprise Been Here and Gone embody that tension of uncertainty with a hopeful edge of renewal. Zedek’s indelible resilience lifts even the somberest laments into triumphs. Even on the album’s three cover tunes, including a haunting rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love,” Zedek’s voice and guitar color every note with raw emotion, making each passing gesture personal. Been Here and Gone channels the thunder and roar of Zedek’s past into a fragile magnificence. from his home in Glasgow, Scotland to Oslo, Norway, where the two men convened with five additional Scandinavian musicians at Riksscenen, Oslo’s centre for Norwegian traditional arts and music. Thus newly-formed, the group worked on arrangements of songs — self-written and traditional — from Alasdair’s back catalogue, in preparation for performances at Riksscenen as well as at ALICE in Copenhagen, Denmark and the bucolic western Danish island of Fanø. The group was named Völvur (The Seeresses), a reference to the ancient Icelandic apocalyptic text Völuspa (The Prophecy of the Seeress). In January 2020, Völvur visited England and Scotland, to perform with Alasdair Roberts at Cecil Sharp House, London and at Platform, Glasgow, the latter as part of Celtic Connections festival. The group had new material — freshly written songs by Alasdair and several traditional Norwegian songs sung by Marthe Lea — and over a couple days at Sam and Rachel’s Studio, Hackney, laid down the music which now flows forth as The Old Fabled River. The musicians who make up Völvur — Marthe Lea, saxophone, clarinet and voice, Fredrik Rasten, guitars and voice, Andreas Hoem Røysum, clarinet, Egil Kalman, bass and electronics, Jan Martin Gismervik, drums, percussion and the aforementioned initiator of the project, Hans Kjorstad on fiddle — are a busy and artistically inquisitive group, involved in a diverse range of projects with a wide variety of musical interests, from folk and jazz to free music, modular synthesis, microtonality and beyond. They make an ideal pairing for such voyages in the alchemical world as Alasdair pursues in his own music. On The Old Fabled River, Alasdair Roberts og Völvur meld their worlds: fiddle and vocal styles formed in the Norwegian valleys blending now with exploratory clarinet, saxo-

one case, instrumental accompaniment is laid aside, as three voices locate a questing fullness harmonizing together. A word about the four “traditional” tracks on this collection. “Song Composed in August,” sung unaccompanied, was written by the well-known Scottish poet Robert Burns; it has been described by the great Scottish singer Dick Gaughan as a song “about everything.” Fredrik Rasten suggested they record it; the arrangement is heavily indebted to that by the group The Voice Squad. “Sweet William’s Ghost” is a traditional night visiting song, or revenant ballad. Alasdair recorded it once before, over a decade and a half ago, in a solo arrangement; but sometimes the ghosts don’t leave, and so there arose a feeling to resummon the song. The two Norwegian songs, sung by Marthe Lea, are spiritual pieces respectively about the sun coming up and the sun going down. They put traditional Norwegian melodies to sets of lyrics from two 17th-century Scandinavian hymnists, Thomas Kingo (of Denmark) and Samuel Olsen Bruun (of Norway). A word about Alasdair’s four self-written songs on this collection. All are love songs of sorts, as most directly exemplified by “Orison of Union” and “The Tender Hour.” “Hymn of Welcome” is a song imagining the passing on of a candle-flame; one at life’s end offering a benediction to one at its beginning. “The Green Chapel” touches upon the ancient notion in Celtic culture of “the three noble strains” of music: geantraí, goltraí and suantraí (the strains of joy, lamentation and sleep). These are the three intertwining threads from which the fabric of a music is woven. In “The Green Chapel” the three knot together, like wind, wave and wood, to form a syncretically co-existing wholeness — a fulfilling distillation of the deep nature of collaboration among Alasdair Roberts og Völvur.

Thee More Shallows - Dad Jams

Monotreme Records CD

MONO172CD

5060464100628

Three-piece US experimental indie-rock band Thee More Shallows released three albums and a couple of EPs back in the early 00’s, garnering widespread critical acclaim and a cult following before the band disbanded. Each of the members moved into new phases of their lives. Now, frontman Dee Kesler has emerged from the wilderness working under the Thee More Shallows moniker again with the help of some previous band members and some new musicians. ‘Dad Jams’ is an indie-pop ode to waking up middle aged with kids. Musically, it retains the adventurous, experimental edge of previous Thee More Shallows albums, but it is also rooted in a stronger pop sensibility, with plenty of bouncy, hooky melodies that burrow into the mind for days. First single ‘Ancient Baby’ rockets the album open with an invigorating blast of psychedelic hippy-infused pop, its weaving flute refrain becoming more and more embedded in the mind with each return. ‘Boogie Woogie’ builds around a restrained synth groove that surprises and delights with crystalline harmonies in the sort of way bands like Foster The People and The Temper Trap combine sensitive emotive themes in a tightly packed indie formula. Elsewhere on the album the catchy warped acoustic melodies of ‘Drinking Tang’ expand into bubbly synths and ice-cream sweet reflective heart-tugging goodness, and ‘Hey, Come On!’ moves more sparsely with a distant drum machine underpinning melancholic lyrics. Each track on this record unfurls in its own way, with more and more sonic gems to find on each listen. ‘Dad Jams’ is probably the coolest album anyone’s ever written about fatherhood. The album’s playful melting pot of sounds combines eccentric experimentation with perfect epic pop moments, achieving the mysterious feat of merging electronic, experimental and indie rock genres seamlessly for an intriguing set of incredibly engaging earworms. 1. Threads is the 4th solo full length from Cape Town, South Africa based composer Jason van Wyk and his debut album for n5MD. Previously known for his progressive trance works, van Wyk has spent a lot of his time as of late composing for the film industry. In 2013, his solo output switched to more pastoral forms of neo-classical leaning ambient with his first full-length Days You Remember, before moving into more piano-based composition for Attachment (2016) and Opacity (2017). Threads does reflect some of his previous ambient works; however, the album shows van Wyk composing music for (and of) current times. There is a much-welcomed underlying beauty to Threads, but there are also threads of anxiousness and unwavering intensity throughout its forty-minute run-time. It's an engaging listen full of texture where each piece takes you on an engrossingly escapist journey.

Formed of Gemma Fleet (The Wharves), Robert Sotelo (Upset the Rhythm), and Christopher Taylor the band are quite unlike anything else around. Order of the Toad sits somewhere between Baroque and Psyche, with touches of Country and Pop thrown in too. It makes for a rich soundscape full of surprises and delights. Melodically, Order of the Toad have something of a medieval fixation, filtered through late 60s influences which end up sounding something like Jefferson Airplane - not least in vocalist Gemma "The Wharves" Fleet's powerful lung-force - mixed with British psyche heat.. think Kaleidoscope or even Syd Barrett drug-damaged whimsy. There's no other band doing this in the UK that we know of, a musically rich tapestry woven from strands outside current trends” Monorail Music… The band’s self-titled debut album was released via Cusp in 2018 and has been described as “Laurel Canyon hippiedom x medieval inflection + early REM spareness = OOTT. Except nothing like that". Their forthcoming second album - Re -Order of the Toad - picks up on these themes and is unique in sound, exploratory and wholesome in approach. The single and album release is a first collaboration between Gringo Records and Reckless Yes. Album and single artwork designed by Raissa Pardini. Evans McRae – Only Skin E&M Records CD

EMCD001

7427064892496

Evans McRae is the new venture of seasoned songwriters Lowri Evans and Tom McRae. Both successful solo artists, this new collaboration sees them join forces (and voices) on a stunning suite of songs. Having met on a songwriters’ retreat organised by McRae’s friend and fellow Mercury Prize nominee, Kathryn Williams, the two found they shared a love of crafted but emotionally powerful songs. After many trips between Pembrokeshire and McRae’s West Country home, the pair realised they weren’t writing songs for other artists, they’d actually written an album for themselves. Lowri and her partner (multi-instrumentalist Lee Mason) decamped to Studio Owz, a beautiful converted chapel deep in the Pembrokeshire countryside, and together with McRae and his long-serving band, recorded the album in the pre-pandemic summer of 2019. A permanent feature on Welsh radio, and favourite of Bob Harris and Janice Long, Lowri has built a large and loyal audience for her brand of beautiful songwriting. Mercury and Brit Award nominee, Tom has proved an enduring talent over his 8 solo albums. His touring success in Europe and use of his songs on film and tv continues to broaden his fan base outside of the UK. Says McRae: “We sat down and wrote with no agenda. Some songs are heartbroken ballads, some big cinematic soundscapes, and some are good old pop songs. We’ve both been doing this a long time. When you put aside egos and selfish ambition, you realise that the only thing that matters is the quality of the songs. In the end they told us

JIM LAUDERDALE HOPE WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE CD/LP: JULY 30,2021 Jim Lauderdale has never been content to sit still in any one musical place for long, effortlessly cycling through a wide range of country, rock, and bluegrass shades of Americana. But Hope, album number 34 in the two-time GRAMMY® award-winning singer-songwriter’s distinguished career, nevertheless stands out stylistically as well as thematically. After a year of locked-down isolation, Hope finds Lauderdale breaking out with wide-open arrangements along the lines of Neil Young, The Grateful Dead and Little Feat. “I wanted to get a musical message out there during this time of what we’ve all been going through, about the hope for better days ahead without seeming sanctimonious or preachy,” Lauderdale says. “What I wanted to achieve was music to somehow help us all get through trying times and give comfort. The past year has been so difficult for everybody. If we can find any glimmers of hope, that really helps get you through another day.”

Soul Jazz Records Presents

COLD WAVE #2 30th July 2021

Soul Jazz Records new ‘Cold Wave’ is a new collection of current electronic artists who have all been shaped by the early European cold wave artists of the late 70s and early 80s.

1. Lena Willikens – Howlin Lupus (5:11)

This second edition Cold Wave #2 comes in two vinyl editions – a one-off pressing purple coloured vinyl edition and a black vinyl edition. Both come as heavyweight double vinyl housed in bespoke individual inner sleeves and the limited edition first pressing of this album comes with its own free pull-out fanzine on the groups featured. The CD edition comes with artist booklet/fanzine and slipcase. All editions are printed in special dayglo colour finish.

2. Beta Evers – Hiding (4:41)

These first artists created new electronic musical landscapes as well as pursuing a stubborn D-I-Y aesthetic, often releasing material on cassette and pioneering use of lo-fi technology, primitive drum machines and home-recording techniques. As part of this continued evolution today many of the artists featured here also self-release their own material, run labels, publish fanzines, or are part of wider musical collectives. Aside from the first electronic, no wave, and post-punk artists cited as influences – Suicide, Patrick Cowley, The Normal, Martin Hannett, Laurie Anderson, Public Image – this new generation of artists also show an exquisitely open source of electronic and disparate influences, everything from Underground Resistance to Purcell, from Scientist to New Beat and more besides. Most of the featured artists are based in Europe and include Krikor from France, Beta Evers and L.F.T. from Germany, Lena Willikens, Job Sifre and De Ambassade from the Netherlands, Toulouse Low Trax from Germany, Dave I.D. and Broken English Club from the UK, and V.C.V.S from Georgia. All of the bands featured here make distinctive contemporary music out of the 80s roots of the first cold wave movement. 30 July 2021

WTF?!

WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU MIX ABOUT A DOZEN MUSICIANS (INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE ANIMALS & THE POLICE) WITH A LOT OF DRUGS?

TRACK LISTING

An acid psych opus! What do you get when you package it in a prefab jacket with stock christmas art and a festive title? Total confusion! We hypothesize that if you take enough drugs you may think this private press treasure is a holiday album...but we’re not so sure. Little is known about the group A Letter Home and their home-studio recorded, private press release. The title, as well as the cover and its stock vintage holiday card design, indicate that this album is some sort of ode to Christmas past, but upon listening there is no sign of Yuletide joy, nary a jingle or jangle nor mention of sugar plums, reindeer sleighs, or figgy pudding. With an ever shifting lineup of musicians and singers that differ from song to song, it’s likely that these recording sessions were more about sharing in an experience and communal bonding than they were about releasing an actual album. No reason for press photos or an advertising campaign. Just music for the sake of - and the love of - creating music.

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, including Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension), Chicago’s AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), Brooklyn’s CBA (Collective Black Artists), and Detroit’s The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory, with a mission statement “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out 20 albums during its short, 4-year (1971-1975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact… but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. After years of trying, we at Real Gone Music finally were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020…right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson, each vinyl reissue features the original black-and-white Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! THE AWAKENING: Mirage (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JULY 30, 2021 The only “group” on the Black Jazz roster, The Awakening today should be heralded as one of the great bands in early ‘70s jazz. That they’re not is the result of the Black Jazz label’s distribution woes; witness the fact that original copies of both of their records for the imprint command prices in the hundreds of dollars if you can find them at all. Mirage is their second (1973) album, the last one they made together; it boasts the same Chicago-based, AACM-centric line-up as the first, with the notable addition of bassist Rufus Reid on a couple of tracks. Spiritual jazz, free jazz, soul jazz, fusion jazz, you name it—The Awakening take all those threads common to early ‘70s African-American music and, like any great ensemble, weave them into a beautiful sonic garment that’s greater than the sum of its parts. The Mirage is a bit less political/pan-African than Hear, Sense and Feel, its predecessor, which definitely owed some of its feel to the band’s Art Ensemble of Chicago/AACM roots; this record is a little more abstract, a little more varied in its moods and textural coloring, yet no less powerful and transporting. Our Real Gone release represents the first time Mirage has been reissued on LP; it comes newly remastered (by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision) and with new liner notes by Pat Thomas. A record to discover, savor, and treasure.

HENRY FRANKLIN: The Skipper At Home (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: JULY 30, 2021 Bassist Henry Franklin’s 1972 release for Black Jazz, The Skipper, is one of the highlights in a label catalog full of many, and his 1974 follow-up, The Skipper at Home (“The Skipper” is Franklin’s nickname), lives up to its predecessor’s high standard and might even surpass it. Which is no surprise given that a lot of the same players are on it, including trumpeter/flugelhornist Oscar Brashear, tenor/soprano saxophonist Charles Owens, and pianist Bill Henderson (here billed as Kemang Sunduza). But The Skipper at Home also boasts ace talents like keyboardist Kirk Lightsey (memorably featured on the Roland Haynes Black Jazz release 2nd Wave), trombonist Al Hall, Jr. (who appeared on Black Jazz releases from Doug Carn, Chester Thompson, and Calvin Keys), and drummer Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, who’s played with everyone from Miles Davis to Joe Henderson. The result is an album that, like The Skipper, is rooted in bop but one that nods to some of the currents that were swirling in jazz at the time; it’s a little freer, a little more electric. And, as is true of just about every Black Jazz release, the ensemble work is remarkably intuitive and swinging, driven by Franklin’s melodic, inventive bass playing. The Skipper at Home has never been reissued on vinyl outside of Japan, and it’s never sounded better thanks to Mike Milchner’s remastering. Pat Thomas’ liner notes complete the package. A beautiful record.

TRUE romance MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

(BLUE WITH MAGENTA SPLATTER “ALABAMA WORLEY” VINYL EDITION) STREET DATE: JULY 30, 2021

Though it was directed by Tony Scott, the 1993 film True Romance displayed all the signature themes and images of its writer, Quentin Tarantino, from its grisly violence to its B-movie homages to its gleeful amorality. And the same could be said of the soundtrack; alongside composer Hans Zimmer’s riff on Carl Orff (which itself was an homage to another violent road movie, Badlands), True Romance offered a playlist that smacked of Tarantino in its embrace of rockabilly (Charlie Sexton, Chris Isaak), grunge (Soundgarden), honkytonk (Shelby Lynne), and romantic machismo (Robert Palmer’s take on “[Love Is] The Tender Trap”). Vinyl would seem a natural for such a “warped” soundtrack; and, for this reissue, we’ve crafted a custom jacket sporting production stills from the film. What’s more, this release of True Romance comes in blue with magenta splatter “Alabama Worley” vinyl! Consider this a colorful homage to one of the greatest cult classic films of all time.

FROM THE HARRY SALTZMAN-DON KIRSHNER FILM “TOOMORROW”— ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK (Purple Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JULY 30, 2021 Long before she was Sandy, the good girl of Rydell High, or Kira, the Olympian muse of the roller disco Xanadu, Olivia Newton-John was just plain Livvy, the girl singer with dreams of the big time in the 1970 sci-fi movie musical Toomorrow. This little-known motion picture was the brainchild of music impresario Don Kirshner and Harry Saltzman, best known for co-producing the first nine James Bond films with Albert R. Broccoli. And Toomorrow wasn’t just the movie’s title. After a lengthy talent search, Kirshner and Saltzman assembled the band Toomorrow, whom the music mogul modestly described as “the best-looking total group that ever existed.” Why the misspelling? As drummer Karl Chambers put it in the film itself, “I dig it! We’re too much, we’re too morrow!” At least Kirshner thought so—he had visions of Toomorrow achieving the success of his previous creations the Monkees and the Archies, and enlisted the aid of songwriters Mark Barkan and Richie Adams (along with composer Hugo Montenegro) for the movie’s bubblegummeets-rock tunes. But, weighed down by legal problems surrounding Saltzman, and a premise—Toomorrow was going to save a race of aliens called the Alphoids from an existence-threatening “sterility of sound”—that was silly even by late-‘60s B-movie standards, the movie went nowhere. The soundtrack, however, boasting the nascent superstar Newton-John, has attained serious cult status over the years, with the original record commanding prices that are truly from outer space. Our Real Gone release marks its first LP reissue, pressed in purple vinyl and featuring notes by Joe Marchese. Like the cover says, “Launch out on a musical cosmic trip with the new ‘Toomorrow’!”

Side One

“This is Charles Bukowski. Well, let me just sit here and drink beer.” Thus begins the September 14, 1972 poetry reading from which this 1980 release on John Fahey’s Takoma label is drawn. This is quintessential Bukowski, from the rude ‘n’ crude drawing that adorns the front cover to the belches that punctuate the poems. As for the work itself, it’s not really what you’d commonly conceive of as poetry, but rather observations and vignettes drawn from life’s darker side, focusing on perversions, poverty, drunkenness, gambling, and bodily functions. But Bukowski’s bemused air and self-deprecating humor blunt the shock value of the words and emphasize the universality of the themes. “I want you to hate me,” he says to the audience, but it’s hopeless—he is one of us. Now, Real Gone is bringing Bukowski to vinyl in a clear with black swirl “Ashtray” edition that’s sure to go as fast as the author would polish off your cigarette butt. EXPLICIT MATERIAL.

Berardo Hernández – better known as Manzanita – first surfaced during the psychedelic Cumbia craze. At the head of the scene were the magnificent Los Destellos, whose leader, Enrique Delgado, was such a six-string wizard that other guitarists found it impossible to escape his shadow. But when Manzanita arrived, his electric criollo style sent shockwaves through Lima’s music scene and posed a serious threat to Delgado’s dominance as king of the Peruvian guitar. Starting in 1969, Manzanita y su Conjunto released a steady stream of singles that used Cuban guaracha rhythms as the foundation for dazzling electric guitar lines. After countless 45s and several years on the touring circuit, the band signed to Virrey, an important Peruvian label, and recorded two LPs acknowledged as masterpieces among aficionados of tropical music. Most of the songs on Analog Africa’s new compilation Manzanita y su Conjunto are drawn from those legendary sessions of 1973 and 74.

Son Lux “TOMORROWS”

Release Date: July 30th 2021 About TOMORROWS: Arriving at a time of considerable uncertainty in the world, Son Lux's multi-album 'Tomorrows' is ambitious in scope and intent. Born of an active, intentional approach to shaping sound, the music reminds us of the necessity of questioning assumptions, and of sitting with the tension.

Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ian Chang train their sights on volatile principles: imbalance, disruption, collision, redefinition. But for all of its instability, Tomorrows’ exploration of breaking points and sustained frictional places is ultimately in service of something rewarding and necessary: the act of questioning, challenging, tearing down and actively rebuilding one’s own identity. The band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. About Son Lux: From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and re-construct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring five recordings, including LPs Bones (2015) and Brighter Wounds (2018). A carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions.

ERRATICS & UNCONFORMITIES 2021 REPRESS - second edition double black vinyl LP with revised red sleeve artwork street date: file under: territory:

Erratics & Unconformities is the first album by Craven Faults. It follows three EPs: Netherfield Works, Springhead Works and Nunroyd Works. Long-form analogue electronic journeys across decades and continents, and swathes of post-industrial northern Britain. The journey on Erratics & Unconformities picks up where Netherfield Works left off. We take the canal towpath out of the city. We fork north shortly afterwards. Is this where it started? The terrain gradually becomes more rugged. Familiar. Wild. Evidence of human activity is less immediate in this glacial landscape. It’s there if you seek it. But easy to ignore. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the weight of the ice-sheet carving its way through the rock. Everything in its own time. The output from the old textile mill Craven Faults calls home is no longer as linear as it once was. There was no clear start point for the project, rather simply rediscovering the joy in experimentation with no material goals. Some of the recordings that make up Erratics & Unconformities go back almost seven years. Tracks have come and gone in that time. They don’t leave until they’ve undertaken a stringent quality control process. It started slowly, but has picked up momentum in the last eighteen months. Recorded and re-recorded to the correct level of imperfection, and then left to breathe. Mixed and re-mixed. Carefully compiled when the time was right.

• Signed to The Leaf Label following three highly regarded EP releases on the Lowfold Works label, Craven Faults’ debut album was originally released in January 2020 • This new edition is pressed on black vinyl in revised red artwork

• The album hit the heights of number 16 in the Official UK Independent Chart, and number 2 in the Indie Breakers Chart back in January 2020 • An excellent showing in retailers’ end of year lists, with Norman Records making Erratics & Unconformities their Album of the Year, plus inclusions from Bear Tree Records (#13), Love Record Stores (#52), Piccadilly (#42), Pie & Vinyl (Top 25), Resident (#7), South Records (#11) and Stranger Than Paradise • A full-page lead album review in Uncut headed up an impressive list of reviews

• Carefully constructed since day one, Craven Faults’ world draws on the the rural, industrial and geological heritage of the north of England • The identity of the producer behind Craven Faults is a closely guarded secret, though clues litter the landscape if you know where to look… • Watch the videos for ‘Deipkier’ and ‘Vacca Wall’

The journey is just as important as the destination.

• Support from Kieran Hebden, Mary Anne Hobbs, Demdike Stare, Dan Snaith, Graham Massey, James Holden, Gold Panda, Bill Kouligas, Luke Abbott, Not Waving, Alessandro Cortini, Steve Davis, Stuart Maconie, Resident Advisor, NTS, NPR and Beats In Space

Over his 15-year career, Sam Mehran started a lot of projects and played in a lot of bands. He released everything from pugnacious dance-punk to mesmeric disco loops; unhinged hip-hop beats to perfectly poised pop songs. He left behind a body of work that’s diverse, but never unfocused. As a songwriter, guitarist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Sam possessed an instinctive understanding of popular music, able to break down a genre’s formal nuances and stylistic subtleties and remake them in his own image.

Before he died, Sam had recorded over one hundred songs for Cold Brew, a selection of which are presented here as they were recorded, without any additional production or remixing. Sam was usually very critical of his own work, with a tendency to second guess himself. But when speaking with friends, he talked about how freeing it was to make Cold Brew: to keep the songs short, to not dwell on production, to not think about his voice, to simply enjoy himself. With Cold Brew’s release, both longtime fans and newcomers to Sam Mehran’s world can enjoy his whimsical, wonderful legacy, too.

Marcey Yates & XOBOI Culxr House:Freedom Summer July 30th, 2021 • All proceeds go to Culxr House and the artists. • Limited edition of 300 pressed on transparent dark olive green vinyl. • LP includes digital download.

On July 30th, Saddle Creek will release a bold new project in the form of Culxr House:Freedom Summer, a collaborative project showcasing a host of talent from Omaha, Nebraska, all of whom are tied to Culxr House: an innovative community hub based in the city that focuses on providing artists and creatives a safe space to grow their talent and obtain access to resources necessary to turn their art into economic opportunities. Culxr House exists to bridge both social and economic gaps through the cultivation of talent and artistry within the inner city. Culxr House also served as a nerve center for the protests carried out in Omaha beginning in the summer of 2020, aka, Freedom Summer. The Culxr House family helped to pull people together, inspiring the community to talk about what needed to happen in order to evoke both global and local change. The collective family that are showcased on the new album ~ and the songs they created ~ grew from both those meetings and the venue’s open mic nights. The finished album is proof of the magic that can grow from collaboration and from instigating the bonds of community when it’s most needed. Across its 11 tracks, a host of artists explore the socio-political climate of Omaha through the lens of hip hop. The entire project was spearheaded and produced by Marcey Yates, the founder of Culxr House and a distinct artist in his own right. He appears on almost every song here, alongside rapper Xoboi, with the only exceptions being the tracks ”Believer,” “Walky Tawky,” and Stay Sleep” where they put full creative control into the hands of fellow producers Dex Arbor and Rial Kell. “My initial idea when Saddle Creek reached out to do the project,” says Yates, “was this seems like the opportunity I have been waiting on. Freedom Summer was inspired by the autumn of 1919, known as the “Red Summer” where white photo by Andre Sessions supremacist terrorism and race riots took place across the U.S. I wanted to share this experience with Artists I know personally and know their level of dedication. Omaha, Nebraska has incredible hip hop artists and always has, but I also wanted to showcase what I felt was an overlooked group of artists, including myself. As artists we have an incredible platform and reach. Using art for activism is one of the ways us as artists can express how we feel and create awareness for our people and community. Coming out of the pandemic and a very emotional year I hope this record can tell our story.” Each and every artist represented here brings something unique to the project and as such the album flows through a number of differing sounds and styles. At times the delivery is powerfully raw, elsewhere it is smooth and delicate, a reflection of the ever changing mood of protest. “Believer” is led by the west-coast inspired sound of Kieves, a nod to the golden-era of hip hop, while “Walky Tawky” creates an absorbing mellow atmosphere with deep, introspective, and visceral lyrics. As with all great compilations, while Culxr House leads with its rich, absorbing sounds it is leant extra weight from the myriad stories and backgrounds which lie within it. The aforementioned Rial Kell is a Sudanese artist with a raw rapping style and delicate singing voice. Buddi da Gawd is the creator of Omaha’s N Houxe Records, and appears on closing song “F’rari Tawk.” He’s joined here by fellow N Houxe representatives Corro Corleone and Sauce Gawd. While Omaha’s rich Hip Hop history is represented by esteemed veterans of the Omaha’s scene, Conny Franko and Mars Black. A wholly important release in its own right, the record is also a reflection of the strength found in Omaha’s culture and community. Available digitally and via a limited edition vinyl run, 50% of the album’s profits will be shared between the artists involved, with the other 50% donated directly to the Culxr House venue that brought this project to life. Culxr House partner, community organizer, and contributor to the album JaKeen Fox summed up the impact of the project on the community: “What felt the most special about being a part of this project was hearing the variety of voices from Omaha artists. As a community organizer, I spend a lot of my time trying to convince people with power that my community has an opinion, a point of view. Freedom Summer affirmed my deepest beliefs that we are the best advocates for our own experiences and that we can tell that story beautifully, through art and creative expression. This project has something for everyone. It’s a mood and it’s more than that. It’s a time capsule. It’s a blueprint. It’s a protest. It’s a beginning. I’m just blessed to be a part of it.”

Gestural Abstractions is the third full-length album from post-shoegaze duo Winterlight. After an admittedly difficult gestation for their second album The Longest Sleep Through the Darkest Days, this new album developed organically and somewhat swiftly from the moment the pandemic lock-down was initiated. This mandatory seclusion allowed Tim Ingham to sit with his guitar or at the piano and play uninhibited. With daughter and bassist Bel returning home from university, her presence galvanized the creative process, which resulted in the duo writing their first song together: In Solitude. It is a song in which there is very much an equal display of Tim and Bel's influences and songwriting styles. Gestural Abstractions is a focused dynamic collection of works teeming with expressive confidence; An upliftingly shimmering shoegaze leaning post-rock gem.

RUTH MASCELLI A NIGHT AT THE BATHS Debut solo album by Ruth Mascelli of New Orleans no wave/glam/industrial group Special Interest. A Night At The Baths is a progression from their previous work under the Psychic Hotline moniker, as well as the electronic rhythms they supply as part of Special Interest, drawing on techno, acid house and ambient music. An album as journey in the best sense, starting with the late night pulse-racing dancefloor menace of “Sauna” and ending with the melancholy dawn chorus of “Missing Men”, with a strong narrative arc in between, told through a deft use of instrumental textures. Ruth Mascelli comments: “This album is an audio diary of adventures had at various bathhouses, dark rooms, and gay clubs while on tour with Special Interest and traveling on my own. It was a way of wrapping my head around my own experiences in those very specific surroundings but also an attempt to connect to the current of queer history flowing through those spaces. Cruising dystopia, libidinal contact, anonymity & risk - rites of passage with a potent lineage. I was in a particularly dark and cavernous sex club when I heard an unstable melody crackling from down the hall. Instead of a proper sound system this place had the kind of network of tinny intercom speakers you would find in a school. The sound of a degraded pop song several rooms away getting lost amidst the chorus of heavy breathing was the starting point for this project. I think of each individual track as it’s own room or physical space. Some may be lonely, some crowded, but I tried to leave them open enough to walk around and explore.” Mastered by Rashad Becker. Cut by Beau Thomas. Artwork by Studio Tape Echo.

American Dreams Records ZRL OUR SAVINGS

Were you to isolate the je ne sais quoi of Chicago music, you might identify an openness among its musicians to experiment. Chicago trio ZRL (Zachary Good, clarinet, recorder; Ryan Packard, percussion, electronics; Lia Kohl, cello), whose improvised music suggests a striking range of musical idioms, extends this lineage. Individually, their work runs broad and deep, and prioritizes improvisation as a crucial part of their creative practices. The three are highly regarded composers, instrumentalists and arrangers, and have collaborated with artists including International Contemporary Ensemble, Makaya McCraven, Whitney, Circuit des Yeux, and Natural Information Society. Our Savings, their new album and first LP, draws on the spirit of such collaborations, bringing together classical frameworks and sonic explorations, sliding from acoustic ambience to cacophonous clatter to quietly virtuosic displays of musical invention. ZRL recorded Our Savings during a residency at Edgar Miller’s Glasner Studio in Chicago, and the album draws influence from the space in which it was recorded: a cavernous room, trimmed with stained glass, called the Garden of Paradise. Close considerations reveal Easter eggs throughout: wild creatures living in windows and ceiling beams, scrap

tile lining a fireplace. This freespirited blend is characteristic of Miller, who produced hundreds of commercial commissions, many in Chicago and its environs, and was highly regarded in his time as a master of seemingly any medium: printmaking, painting, woodwork, batik, graphic design, cutlery, stained glass. Like Miller, ZRL works without sketches, synthesizing a broad array of creative lineages and approaches. Together, the trio’s instruments wash, crash, sprint, glide and divide, darting around and between each other, like they’re playing hide-and-seek. Even in a space as generative as the Glasner, the challenges of focused group improvisation remained. “Our solution,” says the trio, “was to treat each take as a performance, interspersing recording with crowding in the tiny kitchen to simulate a greenroom and filing out to the ‘stage.’” The results are playful and textural yet austere, often evoking other sound sources entirely. “Recent Ornithology,” insistent and jarring, evokes bagpipes, sirens, busted windshield wipers. Between “Daylight Savings” and “Remarkable Savings,” Good oscillates between soft drones and piercing, frenetic octaval hurdles, recalling ice cream trucks and baseball cards in bicycle spokes.

RIYL: Arthur Russell, The Necks, Guillaume de Machaut, Ariana Grande

American Dreams Records is a Chicago-based experimental label dedicated to showcasing art inspired by patience, intention, perseverance, hope, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than we found it. Meanwhile, “Our Savings” conjures Arthur Russell’s Tower of Meaning presented by an outer space ensemble; as Packard’s electronics collide with his bandmates’ chordal drones, Kohl’s bowing quickens and disintegrates, like a rocket on reentry. The band approached recording with a visual quality: “We were throwing a moment at the wall and seeing what shapes we could make.” On occasion, their instruments trade roles: on “ATM” or “Butterish,” Kohl’s bowing takes on a percussive quality, while Packard charts melodic movement and Good’s clarinet evokes a cello or synthesized sound wave. ZRL’s music incorporates the sounds of their environment into their considerations: someone power washing the building next door, a flock of birds. There’s a clear parallel between their album and Miller’s work, about which, in 1932, Architecture magazine wrote that “the composition emerges fullblown, with superb finish, from the material itself.” No surprise that Our Savings emerged in much the same way. “We were in our own worlds, often totally in sync, often creating spaces unknown to us at the time, conjuring objects and colors and references that we only hear later, now, with you.”

LAUNCH233CD

The debut album by The Holy Family has arrived to bewitch and delight. The scope of ‘The Holy Family’ is boundless. It’s an intrepid voyage through sound-worlds, as This Heat-esque polyrhythms, spidery zeuhl, oceanic kosmische, blissful Robert Wyatt-via-Talk Talk-esque pastoral and even Lalo Schifrin-esque celluloid-score tension are visited in search of some greater universal truth. Yet all of these stylistic forays are married with relentless dream logic into one unifying kaleidoscopic vision. The aesthetic of The Holy Family evolved naturally via first improvisation and then a very meticulous crafting of the raw material. Recording sessions involved Smith and his cohorts - including longtime collaborators Kavus Torabi, Emmett Elvin, Sam Warren and Michael J. York - retreating to “an old house in the country well stocked with the requisite fine wines and jazz cigarettes” to lay down tracks that were then sculpted into their eventual form by Smith and engineer/mixer Antti Uuismaki, for approval and final overdubs from the rest of the collective. Mercurial and mystical yet charged with primal energy, this is a classic double album as forum for chimerical experimentation - shifting in form and structure every time it travels from the record racks to the stereo, and revealing yet more psychic landscapes with each listen. 01.
