CAT POWER SUN Sun is the ninth studio album from Cat Power. Six years after her last album of original material, Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of Sun by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs’ themes. The music on Sun employs a sweeping stylistic palette: There’s the classic Cat Power haunting guitar and provocative vocal hook in “Cherokee” (“marry me to the sky... bury me upside down”); the irresistible Latin-sounding nine-piano loop of “Ruin”; upbeat, almost dancey electronic anthems like “Real Life” and “3,6,9”; and the stirring, 8-minute epic “Nothin But Time,” featuring a vocal cameo by Iggy Pop. The

contrasted with the unusual, sparse production of “Always on My Own.” The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global. Mixed by Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Chromeo, Phoenix). “A personal rejuvenation.” — Pitchfork Best New Track (“Ruin”)

““Chan Marshall’s evolution from lo-fi whisperer to archetypal rock heroine is one of the last decade’s more inspiring stories.” — Spin

JACQUES COURSIL MINIMAL BRASS TZA CD 8016 Composer Series Jacques Coursil. First Fanfare * Second Fanfare * Last Fanfare FOCUS ON A TZADIK CLASSIC The first recording since 1969 from one of the legends of the New York experimental music scene who has collaborated with Anthony Braxton, Sunny Murray, Perry Robinson, Albert Ayler and many others. After two astounding albums incorporating serial techniques into the angry energy of free jazz, Jacques Coursil dropped out of the music scene and returned to his native Martinique to teach linguistic theory…but he never stopped playing and never lost his connection to the music. Minimal Brass is a new beginning for this remarkable maverick, a fabulous suite incorporating sound, noise and texture into a swirling masterpiece of overdubbed trumpets. Circular breathing, French philosophy and soulful lyricism from one of modern music’s lost masters.

RACHEL BAIMAN

CYCLES

On June 11th, Rachel Baiman releases her Signature Sounds debut, Cycles. An acclaimed songwriter and multiinstrumentalist, Baiman has emerged as a fearless voice of the American female experience. Her music has been featured on NPR’s “Songs We Love” and called a “Rootsy Wake-up Call” by Folk Alley. On Cycles, Baiman has found a grittier musical medium, employing a majority-female team to create hardhitting songs, replacing pretty for penetrating. At times heartbreaking, at times celebratory, Cycles is a reflection of a lot of life experienced in a relatively short amount of time and a desire to hold fast to the people we love in the wake of uncertainty. The album was coproduced by Baiman and Olivia Hally, lead singer of the Australian indie-pop band Oh Pep! and mixed by GRAMMY winning engineer Shani Gandhi.

about getting your head down, putting your boots on and getting to work - helping to make the world better place for all of us. Vancouver collaborator Kapok sings aboout the shortness of our lives, and the potential in all of us to get the work done that we need to do. It's an allusion to the desperate times we're live in, with a hopeful call to action for all of us to roll up our sleeves and get down to the business of change. d The original "Baby Got Work" is included on the B-Side of the remix due to popular demand!

INDIGO DE SOUZA I Love My Mom June 11th, 2021 • Indigo De Souza’s debut album on vinyl for the first time! • Indie-exclusive LP limited to 500 copies pressed on “Skull Crack” purple splatter vinyl. • LP includes digital download. Almost all records are a snapshot, a musical ribbon bow that documents a very specific moment in time or simply ties-off everything up to that point. Indigo De Souza’s I Love My Mom, her debut LP initially released in 2018, was the latter; a collection of the best songs she’d written in the few years that preceded it, recorded quickly and breathlessly and thrown out into the world. Consisting of ten songs, I Love My Mom feels both raw and unabashed. Indigo pulled a band together for the first time, and was quickly encouraged to commit her songs to tape. Recorded at her friend’s house, they played almost everything live in just a few days, and released the record naturally, with little fanfare. That the record quickly took on a life of its own, deeply resonating with those who heard it, is a testament to Indigo’s songwriting which took inspiration from the unique worlds created by Arthur Russel, Sparklehorse, The Microphones, as well as contemporaries such as LVL UP and Happyness. Two of the songs have racked up more than a million streams each on Spotify: “Take Off Ur Pants” and “How I Get Myself Killed.” The former balances an often breezy lead vocal with gnarly undercurrents of guitar before the whole thing lets rip in its punchy chorus, while the latter, the album’s opening track, finds a different mood entirely, a slacker rock gem that repeats its chorus as a chest-beating mantra. Elsewhere, “Good Heart” furthers the dichotomy which sits at the record’s core, each moment of quiet introspection soon met by a cacophonous burst of energy. Indigo called the record I Love My Mom as a way of acknowledging the one person who’d believed in her work the most. Growing up in a conservative small town in North Carolina, Indigo struggled with bullying and being an outcast from a very early age, resulting in a crippling shyness that lasted throughout her teens. When her mom noticed her channeling these experiences into songwriting she encouraged the endeavor wholeheartedly, buying her a guitar and arranging lessons. By the age of 11 Indigo was writing her own songs. “Over time I realized that she had pushed me out of my shell completely, and performing became a thing that I naturally wanted to do,” Indigo says. “I couldn't have gotten to that point without her. It became one of the things that made me feel seen and safe.” At the age of 16, Indigo moved to Asheville and found it to be a place where unique qualities weren’t scorned but celebrated. “I was always different, and I was very aware of it. It was very difficult because I felt like people just didn’t want me there and I didn’t know why,” Indigo says of her childhood. “When I moved to Asheville I found that actually a lot of people were like me, and there are places that are so much more diverse. I realized that it was okay to be different.” In the sanctity of this exciting new town, Indigo leapt into her songwriting and began an empowering journey which would eventually lead her to the writing, recording, and self-releasing of her debut album - complete with its striking cover art which was painted by her mom; a nod to the person who played such a pivotal role in those preceding years. The album was released to immediate excitement in the local scene leading to repeated sold-out shows at the beloved Asheville venue The Mothlight. Indigo also began touring with her band, supporting the likes of Alex G and Beach Bunny. It was at one of these shows where Saddle Creek first witnessed her. The label signed Indigo soon after and will give I Love My Mom the full release it deserves - with the album pressed to vinyl for the first time in the summer of 2021 - ahead of a brand new LP a little further down the road. ST. LENOX

TEN SONGS OF WORSHIP AND PRAISE FOR OUR TUMULTUOUS TIMES Andrew Choi is one of the most unique and powerful singer-songwriters working right now, and Ten Songs of Worship and Praise for Our Tumultuous Times is the proof. Choi’s fourth album as St. Lenox is at turns lush and raw, with gorgeous and impressionistic instrumentation orbiting around his forceful, intense vocals and the autofictional words that they carry. This is music struck with the uncertainty and passion of faith—an album about religion, belief, and cating the self amidst such weighty and intangible concepts. Just like life itself, there’s tons to discover in these ten songs, providing plenty in terms of revelation long after the record’s stopped. Choi’s released three albums of full-throated songcraft as St. Lenox: 2015’s debut Ten Songs About Memory and Hope, Ten Hymns from My American Gothic the following year, and Ten Fables of Young Ambition and Passionate Love in 2018. Worship and Praise is, as the title suggest, centered around religion and faith—but Choi stresses that this music is less about siding with political agendas many associate with religion and more about evoking the feeling of itself right down to these ten songs’ instrumentation. worship itself, “I’m not particularly religious, but I grew up in a religious household,” he explains. “It’s not that it’s important to me, but I understand why people are religious, and now felt like a good time to talk about that in my music. I think people identify religiousness with conservatism, and I understand why people move away from the church. But I also understand why people are religious. These songs are me dealing with religion, but not necessarily in a nega tive way — in a helpful way that reminds me of what I liked about religion when I was younger.” Indeed, Choi’s perspective and sense of being beams through these ten tracks, which feature his strongest songwriting and vocals to date. The stories he tells and the emotions he expresses feel lived-in, but they also possess a bold honesty under the music’s melodic framework, exploring spirituality through a queer perspective that asks many questions in search of a greater truth. You don’t need to have lived the stories Choi tells to feel this music. This album is full of striking moments that sound like a high-wire act—that is, if the wire-walker possessed an incredible voice and were able to project his every word from hundreds of stories high. Listening to Ten Songs of Worship is an immediate experience, capturing your full attention in a generous and benevolent way. You may not hear another record like it this year, and if you do, consider luck yourself lucky.

ÌXTAHUELE Dharmaland

Eden Ahbez's Dharmaland, arranged and performed by Ixtahuele, is the first-ever recording of this long-lost masterwork by the original hippie composer. Resurrected from Ahbez’s unrecorded sheet music, c. 1961-63. Ixtahuele has woven an enchanted tapestry of mystic exotica and experimental pop that re- establishes the songwriter as a forefather of psychedelic music and brings his work into the present. They are joined by a host of guest artists, including nine of Ahbez’s friends and former collaborators, as well as contemporary performers Kadhja Bonet, Xenia Kriisin, and King Kukulele. The composer’s own handmade drums and bamboo flutes also appear throughout the recordings.

Since her breakthrough back in 2016 Åsa Söderqvist’s ShitKid has been one of the most interesting acts around, constantly defying expectations and breaking conventions. In late 2020, after a year of two albums, one soundtrack album and one EP alongside a US tour cut short by covid-19, Söderqvist announced the end of ShitKid effective immediately. Leaving behind her life in music, Söderqvist simply moved away and disappeared, but not before spending the fall of 2020 wrapping up her final releases - the career spanning double album Sort Stjerne! The album - the final ShitKid album - collects unreleased tracks written throughout ShitKid’s career, ranging from the lo-fi pop of her first EP and the garage rock of the debut LP Fish, to the synth pop of her 2020 LP 20/20 ShitKid and the alternative pop of This Is It - a definite look into the creative world of ShitKid, never to be seen again. Self-titled LP DC778 Mind Maintenance is the duo of Joshua Abrams playing guimbri and Chad Taylor on mbira. This is where the music begins, but Mind Maintenance can’t be described with a summing of parts and players. It’s not about world music, it’s not about jazz. It’s about mind maintenance. When you put on the sound, you’ll know what we’re saying. How immediate and meditative it is. So simple, so in the room. The natural buzz of each instrument sits remarkably well against the other. The percussive qualities of each, so raw and unadorned individually, form with their shared resonance a soothing, sonorous whole. The songs of Mind Maintenance exist in a zone somewhere between composition and improv. Based in melodies that unspool over time as they move between the two instruments, they benefit from the players’ intimately enmeshed sensibility and the intensity with which they listen to each other. Chad and Joshua have been playing together forever — or, if you need to think of it more tangibly, since around 1994. Sticks and Stones was their first band. They played together on the session for the O’Rourke-produced Alan Licht/Loren Mazzacane-Connors album Hoffman Estates (on yes, Drag City) in ’98. They live in different cities, but play together whenever they can — whether it’s with Sam Prekop, Natural Information Society or Joe McPhee. Or just a jam. After trying out the guimbri–mbira combo for a show at Chicago’s MCA, they made Mind Maintenance a thing — and just in time! Boy, do we need it. Engineered by Cooper Crain, whose vibrational sensitivities have been displayed on his own Bitchin Bajas recordings (including their 2015 collab with Natural Information Society, Automaginary), Mind Maintenance captures full spectrums of playing and listening, sound and music. And something else... In 2020, we’ve got leading-edge innovations to help us with our brains virtually from the moment we wake up. Maybe “easier” isn’t the best word for what what all this tech is making our lives. Mind Maintenance, using old technology (in the form of a three-stringed lute and a thumb piano) makes a new thing for today rooted also in the way of things as they’ve been for millennia. In other words, when these sounds bounce off your cerebral cortex, the feeling you get is that of your mind breathing freely in the presence of something it has known forever. Based on our research, the pairing of guimbri and mbira is more than unusual — it appears to be without precedent! This is incredible if it’s true, but more important to the music of Mind Maintenance is the shared ground of inspiration that both instruments occupy. The guimbri is used by the Gnawa people as part of prayer and healing rituals, as well as for social and popular music. Traditional Shona mbira melodies transposed to guitar are essential to Thomas Mapfuno’s widely-loved Chimurenga music; Miles Davis sought to represent the mbira vibe in his own music when making Kind of Blue. Mind Maintenance pursue their inspirations on these instruments down similarly transformative paths. If some part of the 21st century isn’t focused on destruction, but instead, locating a place where our traditions can work together in new ways to entertain and even ensure well-being, that’s just one more incentive for all of us to consider Mind Maintenance.

Erased Tapes release the results of their 20・・---0 project on June 12th 2021. "Especially in this time of isolation we need to remind ourselves of the importance of art, just how magical a medium sound is to express, to raise and answer question marks, to open and mend the soul… it’s the most universally speaking of all languages as it knows no borders." At a time of global separation, Erased Tapes founder and sonic explorer Robert Raths stitched together a project putting what is most important at the forefront — connection. This collection of works by undisclosed artists from the roster gives space and time to appreciate art at its most honest. By shedding the information noise usually attached to release cycles and by bringing music back to the magic of sound, we're presented with an opportunity for exploration when we need it most. Robert spoke to Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC 6Music about how releasing music without revealing its origin through the 20・・--0 morse code series enabled him to share what him and the artists have been working on in real-time as opposed to the usual delays that come with releasing music. "All the information, all that noise… As much as it can help give context, it also takes something away. It tends to cloud your senses and take away from the magic of when you first hear something that’s completely unknown to your ears. How wonderful a sensation it is to just listen and let the music speak for itself without prejudice or the need for any references." — Robert Raths

American Dreams Records DEVIN SHAFFER IN MY DREAMS I’M THERE

“I have a million fantasies a minute,” says Chicago musician Devin Shaffer, explaining the background of her debut LP In My Dreams I’m There. “I’m a chronic daydreamer - I don’t have just one pipe dream sitting there, but possibilities that rotate constantly through my mind as a means of escape.” To a first-time listener, the album - a collection of songs that juggle folk, ambient music, and experimental traditions - may not scream “escape” so much as transversal - across land, ideas, emotions, and dreams themselves. Shaffer does this by wielding field recordings, finger-picked guitar, synthesizers, and her gentle, lullaby voice, showcasing not just one dream or locale, but a way to click through them like channels on a television. The album begins with “Drive Into Woods,” a bass-heavy song built from a field recording that rides the line between soundscape and folk, and brandishes a major theme on the album relationships. The way she tells it sounds like the dark turn in a fairy tale - a couple takes a wrong turn en route to a forest preserve and ends up on a dirt road obviously not meant for them, swallowed by brooding trees. Though fantasy as a subgenre does have some crossover with Shaffer’s world, her concerns are more rooted in the everyday where relationships can be as terrifying as any witch with a poison apple. “That song is a metaphor for the fear of love,”

she says, “unrequited romantic love or intimacy, somebody else. The best conversations I’ve being too open and then having that not be ever had come from walking somewhere with reciprocated - or just being vulnerable, and how another person.” scary that can be.” In My Dreams I’m There features several There is an arc to In My Dreams I’m There - one passages where walks or bike sounds are that starts from a place of fear and hesitance that foundational - they also represent a migration eventually ends in acceptance and beauty, but from fear to radical acceptance, like in “Carina in the early bits, beautiful though they may be, Searches for Hollow Rock” and “Heavy Baby.” there is still a lot of unease to expel. “Drive Into These pieces show what’s at stake - Carina’s Woods” transitions into “Enemy,” the album’s dialogue with Shaffer as they search through first single, and one of the most straightforward, rocks reminds us of the steadfastness and pop-oriented songs on the album. It’s another wonder in nature as well as the power of song about relationships, this time from a friendship, and feeling seen. “Heavy Baby” cheeky viewpoint, poking fun at jealousy and features a curious man and woman sharing the danger of copendency. It’s also been a staple intimate words on death, heaven, and hell that in Shaffer’s live performances for years. “It’s are oddly pacifying and reassuring. Herein is strange to have a song you’ve played live for years the simple and profound realization that life is with voice and guitar become a bigger song beautiful, and that loving, even loving music, with new elements,” she says. “You’re like, ‘this doesn’t require validation or reciprocation. isn’t what’s been playing in my head the whole time,’ and so you get used to the new versions, The album ends with the reinforcement of selfwhich now I’m really in love with.” actualization - there is a short, sweet song in the middle of meditative silence, a nod to actively This album gives you the sense of walking listening to the natural world. “There is a little through worlds, which makes sense as walking bit of magic listening to the birds, to calm, and is an important part of Shaffer’s creative and stillness,” she explains, which is where we’re left, spiritual process. For Shaffer, walking allows feeling perhaps a little warmer, a little less alone, for clear, profound communication and reverie. open to dreams, and in tune with the subtly “It would not be absurd for me to take a ten mile fantastic. FIE CD

Peter Hammill – In Translation

FIE9141CD

5024545927023

For the first time ever, Peter has recorded a collection of cover versions. The songs come from a variety of musical worlds: Classical, American Songbook, Italian Pop and Tango. In all but three cases Peter has also translated the songs, from Italian, French and German. As strange a project as this might seem, there’s an overall sense of cohesiveness to it and it’s absolutely of this time. Two songs have lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein; the music for one is by Jerome Kern, the other by Richard Rodgers. Leiber and Stoller provided lyrics for “I who have nothing’, originally an Italian tune. Three Italian songs are at the core of the album, written (and originally performed) by Fabrizio de Andre, Luigi Tenco and Piero Ciampi. The two tango pieces were composed by Astor Piazzolla. Finally, there are two classical songs, respectively by Faure and Mahler. In Peter’s own words…. “This collection seems to fit together as a group, not least because most of these songs are to do with measures of dislocation, of loss, of some kind of imagined or anticipated future which didn’t arrive. I was unfamiliar with several of these songs before I began this project. One discovery led on to another in some kind of paper trail. The back stories to the songs are interesting and some of the writers and singers had a spectacularly dramatic time of things. I doff my hat to these sometimes complicated lives. My approach has always been to make cultural rather than strictly linguistic translations, so that the spirit of the song rather than its precise narrative is rendered. I hope I’ve addressed the material, the writers, the original performers, with due and proper respect. Inevitably though there’s spin here: mine all mine.” “Finally, these recordings were made, of course, in the time of Covid and lockdown. But also in the knowledge that Brexit was fast approaching. So these performances of, for the most part, European songs were my last as a European singer, with all the rights and privileges that has brought me for so many years.” 1 The Folks Who Live On The Hill 2 Hotel Supramonte 3 Oblivion 4 Ciao Amore 5 This Nearly Was Mine 6 After A Dream 7 Ballad For My Death 8 I Who Have Nothing 9 Il Vino 10 Lost To The World

The album opens with ‘Bad Hair Day’, a relentlessly catchy—and deceptively upbeat—ode to hangovers and missed connections. “I’ve been calling on you all night /But I never get through, I just get in the way” Francis laments; “I am a cloud in the sun’s light/Whatever I do, whatever I say.” Elsewhere, the title track finds him pondering the fickle nature of the music industry: “I think of [Miracle] as acknowledging and even encouraging the feelings we’re not supposed to succumb to - giving up, giving in - just because it can be comforting to hear it from someone else. ‘Why am I climbing these social ladders and jumping through the hoops of this creative industry? Does this make me happy?’” These themes of longing, and lacking, missing and being missed, reoccur throughout Miracle. “When I die/Will I be missed/Or am I missing the point?” asks ‘Say So’; while ‘Lonesome No More’, inspired by the Kurt Vonnegut book of the same name, begs the question: if loneliness was eradicated, would we miss it? By confronting these feelings, Francis is able to move forward, as triumphant album closer ‘The Let Down’ proves. Its lyrics serve as a call to action, as Francis wills himself (and the listener) to ‘Get up/Get something going/Do something, do it/Do it now’

“For me, [Miracle] is about the struggle between my selfdestructive side and my problem-solving, constructive side,” says Francis. “I suppose through a lot of these songs I’m dealing with these emotional problems, acknowledging the negative aspects of my behaviour instead of burying them, and providing an alternative point of view for myself”. Despite its serious subject matter, Miracle is far from austere in sound, marrying the cinematic, dreamlike quality of Francis’s earlier music with the pared-back charm of great singer-songwriters like Judee Sill, Jeff Tweedy and Elliott Smith.

Miracle was produced by Francis in collaboration with Brendan Williams (Dutch Uncles, Matthew Halsall, Kiran Leonard) and Robin Koob (who co-arranged and performed strings). The opportunity to take creative control was one Francis relished. “I’m quite bad at delegating” he admits, noting that he played every instrument except strings on Miracle. The result is a cohesive, deeply personal record, which is as vital as it is vulnerable. “I don’t want to be defined by my anxiety, my depression or any history of substance abuse,” Francis says, “but I do want to reach out to other people who have had similar experiences, especially if it’s in a way that helps them feel a little better. To me, this music is celebrating healing as much as it focuses on the darker sides of the human psyche.”

The title itself conveys the overarching theme of the album, evoking the journey through a musical labyrinth that Hart has undertaken over the last 30 years or so, following a path through to the centre where these disparate strands have coalesced and solidified into a coherent whole. The underlying themes are of a more personal nature, intimated by the cover photo of St Fabian Tower where Hart first joined the now infamous Rude FM in the late 90s, the sometimes misleading directness of the track titles, as well as explicit references to books such as Wilson Harris’ Palace of the Peacocks, the ontological promiscuity of Harris’ writing mirrored here in Hart's own musical endeavours. What you end up with is an album that not only draws upon a wide range of influences from both the musical and literary worlds, intertwining them within a deeply personal context that imbues the music with a depth of meaning, but that is also somehow more coherent despite such a wide range of references and hidden meanings. It is at once both an album of subtexts open to interpretation, and a cohesive whole that fits together perfectly. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. Shaun Blackwell had been tip-toeing around the idea of a solo project like this one for a while hinting at this sound through the various prisms of different bands. Only last year, though, did he finally put an array of other musical outlets on the back burner in order to work towards what would become The Lonely Hunter. A glittering six-track ode to sixties pop, it takes its cues from both classic and contemporary influences, and embraces the timeless lovesickness of The Ronettes, The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las - subtly subverting it to focus on modern relationships, masculinity, and his own roots as a New Zealander. As Hemi Hemingway, he’s part heartbroken crooner, part emotional explorer. An experiment with a four-track recorder led him down a path he’d often hoped to traverse, reimagining the doo-wop of sixty years ago both technologically - he’d feed his taped work back into Logic - and thematically, broadening his own horizons by taking influence from the work of artists and writers who express themselves and their experiences genuinely. Sheer Mag, Angel Olsen, Aldous Harding and Shannon and the Clams - particularly Shannon Shaw’s solo album, Shannon in Nashville provided inspiration as he penned his own lyrics for The Lonely Hunter. Hemingway’s remarkable feat on The Lonely Hunter is bringing together such a diffuse collection of inspirations to produce a group of tracks that feel entirely in his own image; he nods to Isabel Allende’s Daughter of Fortune, John Waters’ Role Models and Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko as crucial texts, whilst the spirit of Orville Peck is palpable in the EP’s haunting country aesthetic - Hemi Hemingway would be very much at home on the stage of Twin Peaks’ Roadhouse.

FLAT WORMS “The Guest” b/w “Circle” GOD#019 7" single

Release Date: June 18, 2020 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, SEND THE GUEST EVERYWHERE ELSE

Flat Worms on 45! Just a minute late for the 1-year anniversary of Antarctica, these two tracks, culled from the Antarctica sessions at Electrical Audio, jump up from the grooves with a rush to spur you after the extended fog and furor of our collective 2020–21 blip. It’s time again — get up! The dance move called “The Guest” is a bit like The Twist, but more like The Writhe actually. There’s some horror wrapped up in the song’s meaning, so you should feel no shame — consider it earned writhing on your part! Here, Flat Worms take a DEVO-esque passivity, looking in on the actions of the real people in this world. It’s pretty scary. Start flopping, and by the time that they get to the big rave-up at the end, you’ll be aligned in time. “The Circle” belongs to that tradition of 45 tracks that may or may not allude to the 45 itself. “Find the circle! Find the center!” might serve as both timely polemic and shameless self-promotion. Or maybe not. One thing we’re not ambiguous about — the acid-glazed lead guitar that hovers like a neon apparition above the thrashing rhythm section. Antarctica was a life sentence from what feels like a lifetime ago — “The Guest” 7" is the emphatic exclamation point that brings it all back to life. GOD? RECORDS

500 only pressed on red vinyl. The Moons return with their final single "The Lone Wolf' a mellow yet contagious number soaked heavily in melody and recorded in studio 2 Abbey Road London. The single is the third release from the successful Pocket Melodies album. The Lone Wolf is an outcast. A lost soul stuck inside the narrow walls of his mind and possibly by choice. He built this world to save himself but dreams what it would be like to fit in. To be accepted. On the flip is a charming piano version of the working class love song An Ordinary Romance. The song features at the end of the Pocket Melodies documentary ‘Inside The Melodies’ and was a spontaneous live recording by Andy Crofts while sat in Black Barn Studios waiting for people to arrive for a session. This joint Nightingales / Stewart Lee 7" kickstarts a lengthy campaign of reissues by Robert Lloyd's combo, The Nightingales from Call Of The Void and Fire Records, in the wake of the acclaimed documentary from Fire Films, King Rocker. "Ten Bob Each Way" / "Use Your Loaf" is released in conjunction with the airing of the long-awaited Michael Cumming-directed, Stewart Lee-written film, King Rocker, which tells the tale of Robert's markedly unique four-decade career in music. Stewart Lee and Nick Pynn recorded "Use Your Loaf" in the attic of Brighton's beloved mini music café, Jane Bom-Bane's and was originally recorded for a mooted Nightingales tribute album. "Ten Bob Each Way" is a brand-new Nightingales recording, their first since recording the "Four Against Fate" album. It was recorded at Woodbine Street Studios, whose in-house producer, John Rivers, worked previously with Swell Maps and The Specials, among many others. A tale of work drudgery related through the tedium of recurring jokes "handed down like diseases", "Use Your Loaf" is the favourite of many 'gales fans and was widely praised by Mark E. Smith as "typically brilliant". Originally recorded as a single by The Nightingales way back in 1982, for Cherry Red Records. It was subsequently re-recorded for their debut album, ‘Pigs On Purpose’, which will be almost simultaneously reissued in deluxe expanded form through Call Of The Void. “One of rock's unsung heroes” Esquire // “A true outsider artist” The Quietus Side A – The Nightingales - Ten Bob Each Way Side AA – Stewart Lee w/ Nick Pynn - Use Your Loaf
