Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: David Shaw & Mariah Czap at Yep Roc Records same: Superserve the artists we have the privilege to work with by delivering their music to the world in a way that best represents how they want their music released to the world. Ultimately, we want to connect an artist’s music with those who will be most receptive to it - fans both old and new. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? David: I can’t choose, but perhaps the most important Yep Roc release to me is The Mayflies USA, Summertown. I was visiting Chapel Hill in the late 90s and heard it playing in-store at Monster Records (R.I.P.). I asked the guy behind the counter what it was and he handed me the CD case. I saw it was produced by Chris Stamey (a Winston-Salem, hometown hero of mine), heard that this was shimmering pop, and noticed a little lamb with the words, “Yep Roc Records” under it, along with a Chapel Hill address. I was instantly a fan of the band and the label, and I picked up a copy of the CD (in-store play works). Also, I thought, “Whoever runs this label is not from around here,” as the music was not at all the insular indie rock that was all the rage of locals at the time. I was right. How did you personally get started in the music industry? David Shaw: I started as an intern at Mute Records in New York and then in their LA offices, which at the time, were sublet from the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royale offices. It was an incredible experience, where I learned skills I use to this day. But before I moved to New York, I’d spent a couple of years out of college trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After much soul searching I concluded that I wanted to dedicate my career to using my strategic marketing skills to help foster the careers of musical artists. Mariah Czap: I started as an intern at Yep Roc my Junior year of college. I was the Multimedia Intern, so was primarily focused on creating interview/live performance content when artists would come through the area and editing EPKs for the marketing team to use. After my semester interning with Yep Roc, I moved to Decatur, GA for the summer to work with Paste Magazine as an A/V intern. During my Senior year of college, I came back to Yep Roc to intern with the marketing department and at the end of the semester a project manager role opened at the label. I was hired 5 days after I graduated and have been at Yep Roc ever since! When and where did the label begin? David: The label started in 1997 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? David: The founders of Yep Roc Records, Glenn Dicker and Tor Hansen, are both massive Slim Gaillard fans. Slim was a jazz musician and songwriter, who created his own language called “Vout-o-Reenee,” and he even wrote a dictionary of all of the words. He used these words in many of his songs. One such song is called, “Yip Roc Heresy,” which Tor and Glenn used as the inspiration for the label name. How has the label changed since it started? David: The first few releases by Yep Roc were compilation CDs consisting primarily of regional North Carolina artists like Trailer Bride, Portastatic, Tift Merritt, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Whiskeytown. Since then the label has worked with artists from around the globe and become one of the most respected truly independent labels in the world. Artists that have released music on Yep Roc include Nick Lowe, Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet, Aoife O’Donovan, Scott McCaughey,Chatham County Line, Josh Rouse, John Doe, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchock, Fountains of Wayne, Jim lauderdale, Los Straitjackets, Kim Richey, Eli Paperboy Reed, Dressy Bessy, The Apples in Stereo, Watchouse (formerly Mandolin Orange), Elvis Costello, and the list goes on. The biggest change from the early days is that the label is now global and has the ability to build the careers of new artists, but also maintain momentum of artists that may come to Yep Roc as more established artists. We’ve built a reputation of being extremely artist friendly, and everything we do is driven by what is best for the artist long term. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? David: The biggest challenge has probably been the product delays, especially vinyl. But it’s also been difficult not having artists on the road. It’s what Yep Roc artists do; tour. Live shows not happening over the last couple of years have been pretty devastating from a promotional aspect, and more so from a financial aspect. Artists have taken a serious hit. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Mariah: With our headquarters in Hillsborough, North Carolina, we have a strong connection to the local music scene both in NC and the South in general. From Chatham County Line to Watchhouse to Steep Canyon Rangers, being able to collaborate with the artists making music in our own backyard has always been a foundational part of the label. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? David: While Yep Roc is open to all sorts of music, it has released music in the following genres R&B, Country, Soul, Rock, Power Pop, Rockabilly, Folk, Bluegrass, Alternative, Punk, Indie, Psychedelic. All of those genres could fall under a broader category of Americana Music, as all of those styles are deeply rooted in American music. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? David: As long as I have worked here the overall goals of the label have remained the

How would you describe the average fan of the label? David: The coolest person on earth. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? David: I think it is important to be environmentally sustainable in all aspects of life. But in the music business, as with any business that involves packaged goods, we do need to do better. I’ve always loved the fact that (except for the goofy CD longboxes, and a few other past bad packaging ideas) LPs and CDs have very little “throw-away” packaging. Basically, just shrink wrap and perhaps a sticker or two on that shrink wrap gets tossed after opening the package. However, that’s still a lot of shrink-wrap. And CDs don’t seem to have as long a life as the nearly invincible (if cared for properly) LP, and they are not recyclable. And then there’s the issue of the energy use involved in cloud storage, music streaming servers, smart phones, and everything else used to “consume” music. I love the idea of doing away with shrink wrap and replacing it with some other component that becomes a collectible part of the package. CD wallets have mostly replaced the dreaded jewel case, which is awesome. We are always exploring ways to reduce our waste (we finally stopped making advance CDs a few years ago), but it’s bigger than us. The industry as a whole needs to find solutions to build a more sustainable product life cycle. I don’t have all the answers, unfortunately. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Mariah: Extremely important. As Co-General Managers, David and I are dedicated to creating an environment with the rest of the Yep Roc team that encourages diversity, inclusiveness and empathy. We act openly and transparently with our team and encourage dialogue about different issues our staff might be facing or that are happening in the world around us. Planned Parenthood, Porch, The NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro NAACP are all organizations that are important to the label and we frequently donate to. Personally, I also serve on Redeye’s Diversity and Intersectionality Committee, whose mission is to establish a diverse workforce that supports all traditionally disenfranchised groups and provide educational + training resources to current employees. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? David: Digital. When I started it was all about the CD. I started before ripping a CD was even a thing. Also, the return of the LP. At Alias Records, we made LPs because it was a cool indie rock thing to do, but our bread and butter was CDs. At Nettwerk, we’d make 12” vinyl of remixes to send to DJs/clubs, but those were promo only, for the most part. When I returned to the music business in 2011, after more than a decade away, I felt a bit like Rip Van Winkle. Digital and vinyl were now a thing. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Mariah: It would probably be a dream pop label with an annoyingly punny name - like Cosmic Sans or Explanation Point. David: I’m not sure what I’d call the label, as I have a tendency to overthink stuff like this, but in the end I’d probably settle on a really bad name. It would be geared toward power pop. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Mariah: Oh man, so many to choose from! I love Criminal Records in Atlanta, Harvest Records in Asheville and Grimey’s in Nashville. Some people collect magnets when they travel. I buy vinyl. I’ve also got to give some love to my favorite local record store - Volume in Hillsborough. I love that you can get a beer while you browse. Ideal shopping experience. David: Super tough one, as I love so many stores around the country. But I’m going to go with one that meant a lot to me when I moved from Hollywood to Culver City in the midaughts. SoundSations in Westchester, CA. I’d lived in LA for about 10 years before I knew it existed. It was closer to my house than any of the shops in Hollywood, and it catered to a very local clientele. I found so many great old records in those bins. Very well-curated selection of stuff, primarily from the 60s, 70s and 80s (at that time anyway) for fair prices. I almost regret giving up my honey hole for good finds, but I live in NC now, so whatever!

WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE (CD/LP/DIGITAL): 6/10/22 “It’s kind of surreal the way this record turned out to be exactly what I needed to hear when I was at my lowest,” Michaela Anne reflects. “These songs became healers, almost as if I’d written them as letters to my future self.” Indeed, there’s something deeply prescient about Oh To Be That Free, Michaela’s second album for Yep Roc Records. Written before her life began to unravel—the collection is lush and cinematic, full of honest, insightful meditations on embracing the present and nourishing one’s roots that couldn’t have arrived at a more vital and necessary moment. The songs are profoundly vulnerable, hinting at everything from Brandi Carlile to Kacey Musgraves as they reckon with the flaws and faults that keep us up at night, but Michaela’s delivery is tender and empathetic, insisting that we’re worthy of love not in spite of our shortcomings, but because of them. The freedom Michaela sings of here isn’t the wild freedom of youth or rebellion, but rather the spiritual freedom that comes from learning to accept what is rather than what ought to be, from learning to appreciate what you have rather than what you want, from learning to look in the mirror and love the person staring back.

❝ Captivating vocals… stunning” – Billboard is deservedly a major emerging voice in country and ❝ She Americana…” – Glide Magazine HIGHLIGHTS:

LP Tony Joe White’s, The Beginning was originally released on CD in 2001. Stripped down and recorded without any bells and whistles, this is Tony Joe recording himself playing his classic swamp blues sound. This album is regarded as the first album where Tony Joe controlled all elements of the studio Until 2020, Tony Joe White’s 29th album had been long out of print. New West Records released a limited edition color vinyl pressing that was the first and only vinyl pressing of this record. This record was remastered and re-sequenced for that specific pressing. Due to popular demand, New West is bringing this title back on vinyl and CD. The CD is packaged in a jewel case with a booklet of lyrics and photos. The LP is packaged in a standard jacket with a color sleeve.

TRACKLISTING 1. Bicameral 2. 1995 3. Urethane 4. Ricercar 5. Not For Me 6. Relegate 7. A Tree Day 8. Balm 9. Cantor 10. Every Good Thing 11. Violet CATALOG NUMBER: WIG412 RELEASE DATE: June 10, 2022 FILE UNDER: Alternative “R”

OVERVIEW In April of 2018 James Hinton relocated from Brooklyn to isolate himself in the Green Mountains of Vermont and continue to work on the tracks that would make up his rave and grime-influenced fourth LP as The Range. When naming the new album, he landed on a word that captured both the deep intensity of the songs and their multiplicity of meanings: Mercury. On Mercury, Hinton builds on the techniques he established on his critically acclaimed 2016 LP Potential, seeking to create human connection in the Internet age through sampling vocalists from the corners of YouTube, Instagram, and Periscope. “I feel like I can find ways to express myself in ways that I’m too shy or unable to do in the real world,” Hinton says of the process.

CD Boxlot: 30 UPC: 887828041220

Mercury is moody, transportive, and undeniably rave-infused, and although it is indebted to IDM mainstays like Aphex Twin and grime pioneers like Skepta, the album finds Hinton pushing himself outside the constraints of any one specific genre. The result is both maximalist and restrained, huge soft synths up against cruising beats to offset the compressed vocals of his carefully chosen clips. “Mercury is my most wide-ranging album yet,” says Hinton. “My memories of rave music, grime and MPC music are playing heavily in almost every song.”

LP w/ DOWNLOAD Boxlot: 20 UPC: 887828041213

Mercury was produced by James Hinton with additional production by Damian Taylor, mixed by Lexxx (Alex Dromgoole), Damian Taylor, and mastered by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters in Los Angeles, CA.

PRAISE FOR POTENTIAL (2016) “makes a shockingly strong case for the top tier of contemporary sample-indebted achievements (alongside pillars including Burial’s Rival Dealer EP and Jamie xx’s In Colour)” CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND [A-]

“Potential recalls the optimistic rave moment when the right combination of people and the right DJ could make you feel like you were part of something that mattered.” PITCHFORK “a transcendent experience… His treatment of the people that he samples is considered and thoughtful; instead of coming across as exploitative, it feels like he’s tapped into a previously unknown range of human emotions.” STEREOGUM [HEAVY ROTATION] DOMINO RECORDING COMPANY 20 Jay Street, Suite 626 Brooklyn, NY 11201 718.797.4229 / dominorecordco.com Contact: Cyrus Lubin cyrus@dominorecordco.com REDEYE 505 Eno Street, Hillsborough, NC 27278 Contact: Jill Wheeler jillw@redeyeworldwide.com

DAV I D SY LV I A N As many of you will already be aware, despite relatively continuous work on solo albums, I’ve maintained strong ties with a number of musicians throughout my life in one context or another. On this new collection, let’s call it SLEEPWALKERS 2.0, a selection of collaborative work produced over the period encompassing BLEMISH through to MANAFON, I’ve included compositions by NINE HORSES as well as more fleeting flirtations and one offs. Neglected offspring. Represented also is long term friend and writing partner, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, as well as more recent, but potentially equally productive partnerships such as CHRISTIAN FENNESZ, ARVE H ENR IKSEN and contemporar y classical composer DAI FUJIKU R A. I hope you enjoy the work presented here, personally selected, remixed and sequenced and entirely remastered. These are the orphans, abused, estranged, exotic, migrating from diverse corners of the globe, brought together under one roof which they’re learning to share despite their differences. We contain multitudes. We’re nothing if not contradictory. DAVID SYLVIAN

Settled in to her own studio in the high desert of Southern California, the Joshua Tree Recording Company, she podcasts ‘Coffee & A Card’, musings on the Tarot and all things supernatural and continues to create music for film and television. A third volume of her self-published and acclaimed book series, ‘Rough Mix’ is expected late 2022. “Exquisite Corpses was a game invented and played by the surrealists in the 20’s, the concept being that things that don’t seem to be connected turn out to be. The world has changed, everyone has lost someone and we not only have to go on, we have to carry on joyfully. For them.” “The music of “Exquisite Corpses” spans a decade, ‘Riding The Moon’ is over 10 years old. ‘Pacific Coast Highway’ is a flashback, a reality check which took me a couple years to write and to get right as in recording it, spoken word is so much harder than singing. ‘Crib Girl’ is older, my ode to the pioneer women, and ‘Voodoo Doll Ball’ is a Halloween classic around here. “Joey Dear” is a song about a song. My own cousin Rick melts the frets off the guitar on ‘Watching the Dinosaurs Die’. Like the game, everything connects - it has a ‘wholeness’ about it, a sense of completion. Peace, even.” Having toured the world, studied Flamenco in Spain and art in Mexico, ” the Joshua Tree Recording Company,” says Johnette, “is my dream factory. The National Wildlife Foundation just certified the property as official wildlife habitat. In the face of all the reckless, greedy development up here in the high desert, I consider it my greatest achievement.” To be released on CD June 3rd, 2022 and LP during the 4th quarter LABEL CONTACT

The last time I found myself on the phone with Mack-Joss - founder of the Mighty Orchestra Massako, Gabon’s national orchestra - I could hear gun-shots in the background. Shortly afterwards I found out that the baobab of Gabonese music had fallen. An adept of folk rhythms, Mack-Joss quickly established himself as a staple of Libreville’s nightlife scene and earned the respect of Franco, the legendary master of Congolese Rumba, transforming him into an ascendent figure of pan-African culture. Mack-Joss’s songwriting ability provided hit after hit. A few of these recordings featured a singer from Guinée Conakry by the name of Amara Touré. His specific voice, impossible not to recognise, left no one unmoved. With a four decades spanned career, Mack-Joss’s contribution to Gabonese culture cannot be overstated and continues to inspire the respect and devotion of people who knew him.

Paradinas had been releasing archival albums but got a taste for making new music after a trip to Wales (inspiring ‘Scurlage’, his 2021 album on Analogical Force). This influence of using trips away as a muse is carried on in ’Magic Pony Ride’ after a weekend getaway to found Paradinas riding Icelandic horses across a snowy landscape at dawn. You can almost feel the relaxed wide open spaces in the lush synth chords of the title track and ‘Uncle Daddy’. The album also reflects on family with features from his daughter Elka on ‘Picksing’ and ‘Elka’s Song’ and ‘Galope’ in memory of his father who passed away a few years ago. The theme of family is also found in the meditative ‘Shulem’s Theme’, a title inspired by the Netflix series Shtisel. These reflective themes tie in with this year’s 25th anniversary reissue of µ-Ziq’s 1997 breakthrough album ‘Lunatic Harness’. In Mike’s own words “Magic Pony Ride was written as a kind of follow up to ‘Lunatic Harness’, at least in terms of genre and style. After mastering Lunatic for its reissue I went back to using breaks again on some newer tracks and this is the result!” PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. ERIN ANNE DO YOUR WORST When the whole world collapses around you, sometimes the only thing you can do is stomp it all loose. Erin Anne’s second album, the gleaming, electrified Do Your Worst, charts that uninhibited romp through disaster. Written amid the rubble of personal grief and professional disappointment, later exacerbated by the devastation of a global pandemic, the record deepens Erin’s venture into the blur between human and machine, adding a new roster of digital instruments to the mix. Drawing on dark, glossy ‘80s synthpop as well as the unabashed bombast of bands like The Killers, the L.A.-based songwriter deploys a cyborg persona to articulate a feeling of displacement from the world as a queer artist struggling to survive the machinations of late capitalism. With bright, interweaving synthesizers and ripples of Auto-Tuned vocals, Do Your Worst poses a dare to the world: Whatever you have in store, I’ll take it standing. Erin began writing her second album not long after adding a MIDI keyboard and vocal processing hardware to her home studio setup. While exploring her new gear, she found that she could work in the same vein as the artists and producers she loved the most. Do Your Worst takes inspiration from the music of Patrick Cowley, the disco and hi-NRG producer best known for working alongside Sylvester. Erin was taken by Cowley’s use of vocoder on the 1982 album Mind Warp, where his distorted vocals create a queer, mutant subjectivity. That album rang out against the cataclysm of the AIDS epidemic; Erin found resonance in Cowley’s music during the present-day pandemic. “I have found the most catharsis and the most safety in listening to the music of people in really, really horrific circumstances making something lasting and profoundly beautiful,” she says. Throughout Do Your Worst, which was mixed by Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties, songs like “Typhoid Mary” and “Florida” reckon with loss, despair, and abjection. “This Hungry Body” sears through pandemic-era touch starvation, while “Mirror Mirror” attends to the noxious but necessary funhouse of social media. On the playful, guitar-driven “Eve Polastri’s Last Two Brain Cells Have a Debate,” Erin uses the spy thriller TV show Killing Eve to explore queer codependency and masochism. Among these fraught subjects, Erin Anne finds opportunities for release. She stages internal conflict on a scale so massive that its details start to become clear; if they don’t resolve, they at least become palpable. “I’m very much a maximalist when it comes to production. I like vast landscapes. I like a stratosphere and a core -- I want the bass to be beneath the floor,” Erin says. “This record is, in a lot of ways, a collection of some of the first moments that I was technologically able to achieve accurate renderings of how I hear my own emotional world.”

Highways & Rocketships hits the sweet spot between classic rock, Americana, and 1980s-vintage college radio. The hooks, ambience, and arrangements are impeccable, evoking both modern-day pop sense and vintage blue-eyed soul, featuring contributions from some of leading lights of the past four decades of American indie-rock – Son Volt’s Mark Spencer, sometimes-Springsteen bassist Jeremy Chatzky, The dB’s members Will Rigby and Peter Holsapple, Southern Culture on the Skids bassist Mary Huff, Mipso fiddler/ vocalist Libby Rodenbough, and legendary R.E.M. co-producers Don Dixon and Mitch Easter among them.

“I’m just trying to write hits,” Jon Daly confesses of Ding Dong

Delicious, his debut album. Known for his roles on Kroll Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bob’s Burgers, and Big Mouth, the actor gone musician casts the net wide, cycling through a new genre with nearly every song, incorporating new wave, country, electro, Irish folk, lo-fi guitar pop, ska, and classic rock. The effect is like that of scanning the radio dial, only it appears all of the DJs on every station have lost their minds. Joined by multi-instrumentalist Cyrus Charemani, Daly provides vocals and saxophone and is backed up by a cast of players including Devendra Banhart, Joe Wong (The Midnight Gospel), Mary Timony of Helium and Ex Hex, and his brothers Matt and Austin Daly. The album picks up where Daly’s previous singles, including the internet breaking Red Hot Chili Peppers spoof “Abracadabralifornia” and Lil Xan diss track “I’m Your Dad” left off, landing somewhere between pure silliness and pop sublimity.

“Jon Daly is a dependable laugh factory. Combine that natural comedic talent with sheer pandemic-driven ingenuity, and you’ve got yourself a stew going.” - AV Club

Horse Lords make music for the liberation of mind and body.

The Baltimore quartet’s new album The Common Task points to a utopian, modernist ideal, recalling as diverse a cohort as The Ex and Glenn Branca to raucous Saharan guitar music, Albert Ayler, and James Tenney. As evidenced by the album’s title, as well as songs like “Fanfare for Effective Freedom” and “People’s Park,” the band’s penchant for radical politics is especially accentuated on this release. Horse Lords are the Pied Piper of experimental music and radical thought. Their music is unabashedly fun, and experiencing it in a live context is an experience of collective ecstasy, each body moving to its own notion of what the beat may be. By showing just how joyous it can be to imagine new futures and possibilities, by making us dance and howl with each tectonic shift, they show how dazzling the path towards utopia could be. “Horse Lords songs are intricate, methodical patterns that seem to pulse and shift the longer you stare. Their tension is rooted in anticipation, the only relief the relinquishing of control.” - Pitchfork “It’s the sound of a group that is infinitely curious.” - PopMatters “It’s supremely well-paced, and to appreciate that it needs to be worked through in one, glorious sitting. Well, not a sitting. The album has a liveliness and tempo that lends itself to running, dancing, speeding joyfully.” - The Quietus

• DEBUT ALBUM FOR KILL ROCK STARS FROM THIS SAN DIEGO NO-MAN BAND OF TEENS. • 1ST PRESSING ON CLEAR WITH GREEN AND WHITE SPLATTER VINYL Thank San Diego for giving us Iron Butterfly, Blink-182 & Stone Temple Pilots but it’s got another distinction now. In 2019, a group of wise-beyond-their-years SD teens, singer/guitarist Tuesday Denekas, drummer Milla Merlini and bassist Sasha A'Hearn, rose like punk-pop phoenix's from the ashes of their previous band to coral guitarist/singer Charlee Berlin (who owned but didn't know how to play her instrument at first) to resurrect Denekas' songs of heartbreak and determination, starting out as the Fluorescents with 2020's noteworthy 'self-titled' EP. Proudly christening themselves The Inflorescence, the band found the right home with Kill Rock Stars to unleash their debut LP Remember What I Look Like. The group faces challenges like juggling high school and college classes, finding all-age venues in town and rejecting gender labels as they explain: “in a largely male-dominated industry, we see how undermined we are for being a no-man band, and we see how being on stage empowers alternative girls and nonbinary people.” The stunning debut LP Remember What I Look Like was conceived during quarantine and draws on the band's inspirations, including indie, punk, emo, grunge and alternative. Tuesday Denekas's songs of shattered, disappointed romance sound triumphant in these infectious songs that are propelled by Milla Merlini's thunderous drums, Sasha A'Hearn's steady, anchoring bass and Charlee Berlin's stinging guitar leads. The confident nine-song album has zero dull spots or wasted songs. Starting with the sinuous, fast-paced “Phantom Feelings” and the resilient, stomping “So Much of Nothing” to the start/stop drama of “Are You Sorry” and the deceptively sweet, bouncy “Last Week” and the hair-pin turns and resilient defiance of “The Truth” to the brief respite from the title track which launches into the epic, gripping “Tomorrow Night” and the desperate grunge power of “The Button,” finishing off with the roaring climax of “Board Game,” it’s a rollercoaster ride of thrills and anguish to strap in for.

Territory: The World

Go Sailor were a great, short-lived band from the mid-90s who represent a key link in the US indie music chain. Featuring Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap, The Softies, Gaze, Brave Irene, Knife Pleats), Linton (Henry’s Dress, The Aislers Set) and Paul Curran (Take A Day fanzine, Crimpshrine, Monsula), they released three great singles and a few compilation tracks, and then went their separate ways. But what records they are! Basic and lovely in their song-writing, they’re perfect snapshots of where indie-pop was during that last burst of pre-internet indie activity. Touching on time-honored themes of friendship and love (lost and found), they resonate with honesty and purity of intention. The trio reunited in the early 2010s to play to enraptured crowds at the NYC and Athens Popfests, and their appearance at the Slumberland 20th Anniversary show was the stuff of legend. This album compiles all three of their 7” singles (for Slumberland, Yoyo and Lookout!) and compilation tracks, and was first released on vinyl in 2011. Due to pressing plant issues it quickly went out of print, so we are very happy to bring you this new edition, back on vinyl where it belongs with a new insert featuring liner notes and lots of cool band pictures and ephemera. FALLS OF RAUROS - KEY TO A VANISHING FUTURE CD

RELIC139

BLURB INFO Falls of Rauros of Portland, ME return with their 6th full-length album Key to a Vanishing Future. As a band that has mastered the balance of melody and dynamics within heavy songwriting, Falls of Rauros now faces a new era as a creative force. Since their founding as a duo in 2005 the band has expanded into a fully-realized and collaborative quartet. Although originally intent on exploring the common ground between black metal, rock, and folk music, the group’s continuous goal has been to bring together the raw materials of numerous styles of music and forge something seamless and new, rich with detail and texture. Recorded in isolation by the band themselves, the new record holds no regard for what is expected in the evolution of their sound, pays no mind to the current popular sounds of heavy music, and opens all possible doors. The band details: “We wanted to write something new to us; it sounds nothing like our previous record, Patterns in Mythology, or like anything from our back catalog, for that matter. It’s a new chapter for the band, and you can be pretty sure we’ll move on to something a bit different on our next record.”

ARTIST: TITLE: CAT#: FORMAT: GENRE: SRLP: UPC:

FALLS OF RAUROS KEY TO A VANISHING FUTURE RELIC139 CD DIGIPAK METAL 798576796426

In addition to expanding upon their sonic identity, Falls of Rauros also approached the album’s themes with an increased scope, as the lyrics explore ideas around the commitment of existence. As clarified by the band: “The idea behind Key to a Vanishing Future is that humans are born into this world without consent and forced to take on both the weight of human history and a responsibility for shaping the future. Both the failures and successes of previous generations are passed to the next, and the younger generation has no choice but to inherit the world they are given. Tradition, religion and religious superstition, debt, disease, addiction, the histrionics of desperate people living in a crumbling empire; all of these things wedge their way into our lives whether we invite them to or not.” Key to a Vanishing Future is the most intricate and exploratory of the band’s career, while at the same time the most visceral and immediate. “We are handed a key to the future, but what does that future look like?” Key to a Vanishing Future was written and recorded by Falls of Rauros at their rehearsal space from December 2020 to January 2021. Mixing and mastering by Colin Marston at Menegroth, the Thousand Caves in Queens, New York from January to March, 2021.

Anthony Moore 40-plus years since its original release, the pop-punk-new wave inventions of Anthony Moore’s Flying Doesn’t Help are freshly remastered, blasting the sparkling, angular sounds into today with perfect vitality. After spending the early years of the 70s making experimental music first as a solo artist, then with Slapp Happy and Henry Cow, 1976’s OUT sessions had reinvigorated Anthony’s youthful love of the naive pop melodies of pop radio, the undeniable excitement of songs. While OUT ultimately went unreleased at the time, the iconoclasm clouding the late ’70s air was addictive and transformative for Anthony. England seemed to be roiled as violently as it had been in counter-cultural days a decade earlier; the UK pop charts breathlessly reflected the changing spectrum with equal parts aging hippie and prog delicacies alongside new ascendant sounds: rough-hewn pub and punk rock, plus dub reggae and disco and ska and Stiff and Krautrock. . . . This proved to be an ideal environment for Anthony to make records by exploring, as he puts it, the “deep connection between minimalism, repetition, working with tape and celluloid and forming the modules of a three minute pop song.” Caught up in a no-holds-barred era, Anthony was more than happy to play the out-ofhis-head madman, raving through outrageous exchanges with the press, while “Judy Get Down” received Single of the Week honors from the NME (with review penned by Brian Eno). Represented by Blackhill Enterprises, Anthony did production work throughout ’78–’79, on Kevin Ayers’ Rainbow Takeaway, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s Angel Station and the first This Heat album, meanwhile cutting his own songs on a dead time deal at Workhouse Studio with engineer/producer Laurie Latham. Through the wee hours of countless nights, the two pieced together Flying Doesn’t Help, with a little help from friends (an inspired bunch, including Bob Shilling, Charles Hayward, Chris Slade, Robert Vogel, Festus, Matt Irving, Sam Harley, Bernie Clark, Edwin Cross and Martine Moore on the telephone!). Building upon the axis of pop and experimental impulses that distinguished OUT, and informed further by the raw sensibilities exploding everywhere, Flying Doesn’t Help blasts out of the speakers with its own unique blend of sophistication and aggression, Anthony’s keyboard flashes between arpeggiantions and outright stabs among the noise of slicing guitars, funk basslines and the reverbed blare of the drumkit. Opening with Anthony’s greatest hit, “Judy Get Down,” and containing a noise-laden remake of the Slapp Happy/Henry Cow number, “War,” among other delightful sweet-and-salty confections, Flying Doesn’t Help never stops moving, fueled with raw outrage and dark satirical intent, churning with the energy of next-gen types like the Tubeway Army and DEVO, while shimmering with the elegance of the still-challenging old guard types, like Cale and Bowie. Clearly, Flying Doesn’t Help was steeped in the time, and the original release reflected a deep mistrust of the corporation mindset. Information was a dubious concept, and connections to any recognizable organization were seen as untrustworthy, so facts like musician credits were left out of the package, and even Anthony’s name was altered (he was credited as A. More on the album and Tony More on a single release). The label name QUANGO was conceptual as well, standing for “Quasi Autonomous Non Governmental Organization”; each record was sealed with red tape that the listener was required to cut through in order to get to the music! Rather than recreate the conditions of the original release of Flying Doesn’t Help, this reissue instead embraces the changed environment of the current time and place: instead of no credits, now they are complete, with Anthony’s full name restored and even the artwork subtly “relocated” to reflect a new set of relationships. All of which brings the forward-looking sounds of Flying Doesn’t Help into the more independent-minded 21st century syntax where it belongs.

DAVID GRUBBS & JAN ST. WERNER TRANSLATION FROM UNSPECIFIED BLUE CHOPSTICKS BC37 LP 10,2022 2022 STREET DATE: JUNE MAY 20, NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN, ALL OTHER SALES PERMITTED.

TRACK LISTING: TRANSLATION FROM UNSPECIFIED (18:29) SOIXANTE OOZE (19:43)

SELLING POINTS: First album by this duo known separately for their work in Mouse on Mars and Gastr del Sol Two long-form pieces, utterly different from one another: one hyper-detailed electronic music + sound poetry and the other live-in-the-studio electric guitar and laptop paint-peeling The exciting first chapter in a long-anticipated collaboration

David Grubbs and Jan St. Werner met in the mid-1990s when Grubbs was playing with Gastr del Sol and The Red Krayola and St. Werner in Mouse on Mars and Microstoria. After years of exchanging ideas, Translation from Unspecified marks their first time locking horns as a duo, and it’s clear this deck-clearing collaboration was long overdue. In January 2020 Grubbs arrived at Mouse on Mars’ Berlin studio Paraverse with a guitar and “Translation from Unspecified,” an open-ended, seemingly self-generating poem suggesting AI, one of the themes in St. Werner’s recent work. This became the side-length title track, a winding corridor of electronic fanfares and spontaneous musical miniatures urging Grubbs’s slow and steady recitation to grow wings and graduate into song. Who knows where this idiosyncratic mise-en-scène — day-glo, extrovert electronics and task-oriented human — came from? Reference points, distant ones, might include Robert Ashley and Paul De Marinis’s “In Sara, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven...” and the sound poetry of Anton Bruhin. Flip the record and you have “Soixante Ooze,” a live-in-the-studio duo for guitar and computer more recognizably St. Wernerian and Grubbs-like that reconfigures elements of the title track before finally morphing into needle-pinning monoliths of sound. David Grubbs has released fourteen solo albums and appeared on more than 200 releases. He was a member of the groups Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait and has performed with Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, Luc Ferrari, Will Oldham, Loren Connors, the Red Krayola, Royal Trux, and many others. His newest book is Good night the pleasure was ours (Duke University Press, 2022). Jan St. Werner is an artist and electronic music composer best known as one half of the group Mouse on Mars. He has collaborated with Oval’s Markus Popp as Microstoria and written music for installations and films by visual artist Rosa Barba. In 2013, St. Werner released Blaze Colour Burn, the first of a series of experimental recordings called the Fiepblatter Catalogue. Recently his work has prioritized installation and interventions with spatialized sound, including a number of collaborations under the name Dynamische Akustische Forschung (DAF).

Those Pretty Wrongs are Jody Stephens and Luther Russell, two old friends and veterans of the music scene in different ways. Jody was the drummer for the legendary band Big Star and now helps run equally legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis. Luther Russell was the leader of seminal roots-rock band The Freewheelers and is now an acclaimed solo artist and producer. Those Pretty Wrongs (2016) & Zed For Zulu (2019) were both released to great critical success and the duo toured much of the US and EU delighting crowds with Those Pretty Wrongs music. There's an undeniable influence of Stephens’ former band in the breezy melodies, the strong, simple and straightforward arrangements, beautifully built around the duo’s harmonies. Billed as "Double the PRETTINESS for the price of one" and inspired by the good ol' truck-stop LP two-fers (along with the desire to update the vinyl pressing with premium cutting, and packaging.) Curation Records has teamed up with Those Pretty Wrongs to not only put their two LPs back in print but to also remind the world of the power of "pretty music". On their third LP the band pay homage to their hometown of Hull and its folk. North East Coastal Town is mature; it finds the band at the height of their powers as they carve-up a wide-screen, brooding body of work that is drenched in a sense of belonging and reflection but still impressively maintains their trademark swagger and ear for pop sensibilities and guitar hooks. “Hull and the surrounding area runs through our DNA and has shaped us, weathered us, empowered us, embraced us. When writing and recording this album it was important to us that this sense of belonging was also reflected in the album’s craft and therefore we used local studios, equipment, gear, and the community around us to establish what it means to belong in a North East Coastal Town.” They began rebuilding with ‘Friends Without Names’ – the first glimpse from the album – which was added to the AList at BBC 6Music, and was recorded in the dead of night and hums with a dark, brooding and passionate atmosphere. “Friends Without Names is the anchor and blueprint for our next record. In a remote part of Eastern England, close to the river Humber, we performed this track as if we were in trance; vibrating in a constant musical crescendo. Our aim was to push ourselves and harness differing time zones whilst giving in to the moments of beauty, horror, love and chaos depicted by the song’s lyrics.” (Mez Green, vocals) “This band are flexing their creativity for sure, This is LIFE we are talking about, they’ll always have something to say, something to stand for, a band to get lost in for sure” Jack Saunders, BBC RADIO 1 "This raging, unrelenting dose of sonic chaos is a thunderous reminder of why guitar music is mankind's greatest creation" – Dork (4/5) “This record is indispensable” – DIY (4.5/5) “A stand-out record” – The Line Of Best Fit (8.5/10) 1. Call it synchronicity, call it happenstance, call it no more than three friends getting together to give their speakers a workout. Yet The Utopia Strong’s formidable conflagration of psychedelic radiance and beatific harmony has evolved way beyond all or any expectations since the band’s inception.. ‘International Treasure’ chronicles the collaborative collision of Steve Davis, Kavus Torabi and Mike York heading into unchartered psychic territory, seemingly with nothing but their instincts as co-ordinates.What’s resulted is a step beyond anything either band or audience might have expected - a deeply rewarding voyage into inner space which moves into darker and still more evocative sound-worlds whilst remaining fundamentally off the map. Influences know no bounds in this context, and the listener would be forgiven for locating the atmospheres and soundscapes of this album on some sonic promontory above and between the potent abstractions of Tim Hecker, the improvisatory excursions of The Necks, and the gothic allure of Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore.‘International Treasure’’ is the next chapter in a story which only grows more rewarding with every stop along the way - one in which three heads travel together deeper into their own musical journeys, and the resulting alchemical power transmutes its origins into gold. As no less a sage than Andrew Weatherall proclaimed, The Utopia Strong are “gnostic sonics in a nutshell”. 01 - Trident of Fire 02 - Persephone Sleeps Deep 05 - The Islanders 06 - Disaster 2

Holy Scum - Strange Desires Rocket Recordings

LP Pink Fog Coloured Vinyl

“Holy Scum”. Say it out loud. It’s a name that can’t help but be spat out viciously; a snarling exclamative that fits the bludgeoning sludge and feedback drenched improv rock that its progenitors unleash on their debut for Rocket Recordings, Strange Desires.Initially a Manchester-based collaboration between guitarist Peter J Taylor (formerly of Action Beat) GNOD co-founder Chris Haslam on bass and his bandmate Jon Perry on drums, the thick gauze of Holy Scum’s jams have been pulled apart in production by one of half of legendary hip-hop duo Dälek, Mike Mare (aka Mike Manteca). He also provides the growling, guttural vocals.“When Mike got involved it became another thing entirely to what we had originally perceived” notes Haslam “He added a whole new dimension to what we had been working on.”“He kept asking if it was okay to fuck what we sent him up and we kept asking him to fuck it up even more” adds Taylor. “I kept referencing My Bloody Valentine in terms of creating a wall of noise, but we wanted it to be heavy as fuck.” The resulting dystopian tumult of sound thus also finds itself somewhere above and beyond the sonic scorched earth inhabited by early Swans, Godflesh and Shit And Shine.“All of the lyrics revolve around the collapse of society, feeling numb watching it happen, what it’s like on the other side communicating with the dead and looking to other worlds for relief” reckons Mare” Indeed, Strange Desires is a record for the moment, and beyond. A howl amidst a world fallen off its axis. Holy Scum are unflinching in their confrontation, meeting fire with fire on this most stunning debut. 01. Never Feeling Your Endless Breathing 02. Room Of Cruelty 03. Everybody Takes You Just Take More 04. A World About To Die 05. Light Chooses Mine 06. Drowned By Silence 07. Useless Wonderful Doubt 08. Pcgfhilthposhi

Feiertag – Dive Joris Feiertag is a Dutch producer and drummer from the historic and culturally rich city of Utrecht. Having signed to Sonar Kollektiv in 2018, and released his debut longplaying record Time To Recover, and its subsequent remixes, two years later, he now brings us another side to his sound in the shape of the Dive mini LP. This new project sees the producer return to something like his musical roots, delving deeper into the use of synths and embracing more offbeat melodies. Countering the more uplifting and vocal led nature of Time To Recover, Feiertag found himself searching for more sonorous and somber themes. Dive is in many ways a more personal album, without any topline song-writing and a simpler approach that allows Joris’ musicality to shine through. The lead track, Living In Slow, is a quirky and intimate introduction to the album, featuring sped up vocals, snapping snares, twitchy fx and those haunting synths. It’s a leisurely preface to what is a truly solo project that embraces Joris’ breakbeat roots and is an honest reflection of the producer’s raw energy. Things pick up pace with Cala, complete with its steel drums, guitars and dramatic, swooping synths that gives it something of a Jamie XX feel. How U Do It, takes some of its cues from the same part of the world, albeit with a heavy dose of Detroit flavour, especially in the use of the moody and challenging spoken word that features on the track. It has its roots firmly planted in Detroit of course, but as well as its motor city connections there’s also a flavour of the UK scene in its DNA - something that Feiertag returns to time and again. British label’s like Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section and rising stars such as WheelUP are important touchstones for Joris’ sound, and here their broken beat (or “bruk”) legacy is felt alongside the US house feel. Finally, the Dive is complete with the track of the same name rounding off the album. It’s the only track to have an overriding organic feel to it and very much the perfect way to bookend this evocative mini LP. A blissful climax in the style of a classic Amon Tobin outro.

LARS GULLIN - Stockholm Streets 1959/60 (Vol.4) Wonderful compilaon of studio tracks (not live) recorded in Stockholm by various mainstream jazz ensembles of Gullin’s, from quartets to octets. Gullin really swings, his own composions are excellent (plus there are 4 standards out of the 17 tracks) and the fine arrangements for the fine musicians are all smooth and ght. The quality of sound is superb - only the swishy nge on the cymbals and high hat give away the age of the recordings, otherwise very warm and realisc.

STAN HASSELHARD & BENNY GOODMAN -At Click 1948 Were it not for his tragic death in a car accident late in 1948, Stan Hasselgard might be remembered as one of jazz’s top clarinests. He had impressed Benny Goodman to the point that Goodman used him as part of his septet for a few weeks in 1948. Although no commercial recordings resulted due to a recording strike, the group was broadcast regularly from the Click in Philadelphia. Virtually all of the exisng joint Goodman-Hasselgård airchecks are included on this Dragon CD. The boppish music is oen fascinang and Benny Goodman (“The King of Swing”) fits quite well into the advanced arrangements. The recording quality is generally decent and, due to the historic nature of these meless (and rather unique) performances, very acceptable.

LARS GULLIN - Danny’s dream 1953-55 (Vol.8) Sweden’s most important jazz musician of the 1950s, baritonist Lars Gullin had a tone somewhere between Gerry Mulligan and Serge Chaloff and a dry but swinging style. Danny’s Dream, the eighth in a series of Dragon CDs that reissue many of his most important sessions, has three dates that put the spotlight on Gullin’s playing in small groups. The first numbers are quartet/quintet numbers with tenor saxophonist Carl-Henrik Norin on three numbers. That set and the two other quartet sessions all feature guitarist Rolf Berg as a key soloist and also include George Riedel’s tasteful bass. The most famous selecon is Gullin’s “Danny’s Dream,” a haunng ballad that was considered his greatest “hit.” Overall, this volume gives listeners a strong sampling of Lars Gullin’s baritone performing West Coast-style cool jazz. The Lust-O-Rama… ah, just seeing the name in writing brings back memories of small half-empty clubs, awful sound systems, dressed up kids mistaking them for a mod band and fat plumber-assed grunge fans who went to the wrong gig. But also a lot of fun and a band that always gave everything. What more can be said about this inglorious Norwegian garage rock band that hasn't been said before? They toured Germany, Holland and France. They supported The Gun Club, The Godfathers, The Fuzztones and loads more in Norway, but the pinnacle of their live performing career must be their last ever gig, playing an allfemale admission gig at ROCKALL MUSIC PUB in Oslo in July 1992. The Lust-O-Rama were treading murky grungy waters during their existence. Formed optimistically in September 1989 and going out with a rather underwhelming and a quite embarrassing reputation in July 1992 after a string of singles, EP’s and compilation tracks on various labels around the world… and this album. Twenty-Six Screams, originally released by Skyclad Records in the US in 1991, is the pinnacle of Norwegian (did I hear European?) neo-sixties garage rock in the early 90s. A bauta in every sense of the genre. The Lust-O-Rama had close to it all… great songs, the sound, good looks, humble attitude, but nothing more. No management, no record company, no nothing. Just a bunch of guys playing the kind of music they loved. A few years later they would have been at the forefront of the new garage rock scene with the likes of The Hives. But history is a bastard, you hit it or you don’t. They didn’t, but thirty years on you can decide why they didn’t with this re-mastered edition of Twenty-Six Screams. Faxed Head • Exhumed at Birth MDP-008 LP Street Date: June 10, 2022

The dark road traveled by Faxed Head since the early 1990s was long thought to have deadended ages ago — but with the torn-from-theheadlines appearance of the recent “Vaxxed Head” 7" single, hopes are rising in the scattered and shattered Headheads around the world. Raise the roof a little higher: Exhumed at Birth, the long-lost 1997 debut album, is now seeing its first-ever vinyl release. And the remastered tracks sound incredible. Faxed Head are a part of an almost-lost current of protest music from the underground of thirty years ago. They presented as a band with features entirely obscured from view by crudely-made costumes showcasing their (allegedly disfigured) heads. Their post-hardcore music exploded into adjacent permutations of aggressive metallic rock and dimestore musique concrète. When they played live, the spectacle of it all was as intense as the music and their insane backstory — which inspired enclaves of enraptured freaks around the planet to declare them most supreme. By the time Exhumed at Birth was delivered, though, their story was almost over. Between 1992 and 1997, the band released five singles (many on Gregg Turkington’s Amarillo Records, home to Neil Hamburger and Secret Chiefs 3) and played around the Bay Area and Japan, introducing their decidedly outre approach to DIY metal. Their aliases — Neck Head, LaBrea Tar Pits Head, McPatrick Head, Graph Head and Fifth Head — alongside track titles like “Pantera Lines” and the road-rubber wordplay of the songs on the “Tire” EP — indicated that something was rotten in Denmark. Of course it was! And lots of other places too. This is exactly what had willed Faxed Head into being. [The true identity of the Exhumed-era bandmembers, for those who insist on knowing: Trey Spruance, Gregg Turkington, Brandan Kearney, Phil Franklin, and James Goode.] Faxed Head were good dark fun back then, but at the remove of today, we’re inclined to perceive something else threaded through the soundworld on Exhumed at Birth: an ultimately-sympathetic, necessarily grim character study of kids isolated in the remote town of Coalinga, in California’s Central Valley. These depressed, addicted, self-handicapped

I Saw Into the Grave Grave Teachers Exhumed at Birth Gore and Guts House of Spirits The Ancient Evil Susurrus In Gloaming Don’t Turn Out Like Me The Sickroom of Delivery Could Eckankar Help? A Dream Peregrinations From Beyond The Blackened Coffin teenagers making art had a back story containing obvious references to the two young men who’d gained international notoriety when they were galvanized by their nowhere existence (and allegedly, by the music of Judas Priest) to enter into a suicide pact on a school playground. The predictably grotesque outcome — one boy dead, the other left badly mutilated — became the cause celebre of a censorious organization known as the PRMC whose stated intent was to obfuscate what they considered problematic musical expressions in the name of protecting the children. Parents sued the hapless Judas Priest and succeeded in implementing a ratings system for new record albums, while the media reported

relentlessly on this increasingly dismal turn of events. From the point of view of, let’s say, the punk scene in SF, this was yet another example of modern society failing across the board with an outcome equal parts hideous and cartoonish. So Faxed Head pointed their finger at America, brewing up a complex parody that remains hilarious, inappropriate, and potently elusive some 25 years after the fact. Staking out the same ground as Marilyn Manson and other MTV-favored imbeciles beloved by kids who were otherwise isolated in small communities around the country with no comparable stimulus to provide a much-needed polarity, Faxed Head ripped up not just the fascistic impulses at work in mainstream American society, but also the hypocrisy of this so-called rebellion music, exposing it as the inch-deep kiddie pool piss that it always was while playing the SHIT out of it at the same time, incorporating extreme sonic elements to up the ante. A fascination with the then-seemingly outdated analog technology became a fetishization of analog decay in the production of the music, as they used misaligned heads on the tape deck and dubs from other failing machines to achieve additional random violence in the songs. This proved very appealing to noise players who wanted to know what they were hearing — including Merzbow and the Boredoms, who no doubt appreciated the dark gravity of the satire as well. Further extending the thought-field of Faxed Head’s feral ravings were lyrics from artists no self-respecting exurban hard-rocker would know — Leonard Cohen and Richard Harris — and found poetry culled from scammer compilations of poetry solicicited in the advertising sections of the National Enquirer! You couldn’t make all of this stuff up all of the time — but you could roll it all together into pretty wild entertainment, and maybe even convince people not to get caught up in penny-ante cultural wars that pull us apart while willfully obscuring the real shortcomings at play. Well, we all know how that went. Now Exhumed at Birth is cut into vinyl, to take another crack at deprogramming the callow populace everywhere. You owe it to yourself, or your dumber friends, to send Faxed Head back into the mix!

Voyeurs In the Dark retains that cinematic quality, and at the same time infuses the music with elements taken from Jazz, electronica, rock and pop. Having primarily explored the quiet side pop and folk in his previous four albums, Barzin has expanded his musical palate, broadening his sound towards a more an experimental direction, while still retaining his preoccupation with exploring the internal landscape. The uniformity of sound that characterized the previous albums has been abandoned for the expression of differing aspects of the self that at times hold opposing views and desires. Voyeurs In the Dark sees the artist plot a seductive, contemplative route through city haze, shuttling between graceful glimmering interludes, with wonderfully atmospheric songs at every stop. From opener Voyeurs In the Dark’s first guitar strums and the fizz of its drum machine, the record envelopes itself in a glorious shadow, as shown in the slow waltz of I Don’t Want To Sober Up, dancing around its own swirling guitar chords. On Watching, Barzin plunges himself deeper into a wash of cyclic bass, guitar and synth riffs, as the gloom grooves into light. It’s Never Too Late To Lose Your Life has a much more affirming and urgent tone, shade turning into shapes and motion, while To Be Missed In the End builds its own smoke in a cloud of saxophone and sparse guitar notes, closing out a record full to the brim with scatterbrain beauty and eclectic dusk. 1. Perceive Reality is the second album from KHOMPA, the electrifying solo project of Davide Compagnoni, featuring an adventurous mix of drumming, electronics and cutting edge drum triggering technology. KHOMPA’s previous album, the ground-breaking The Shape of Drums to Come (2016) introduced this unique audiovisual live project, whose main elements are: a drummer, a conventional drum kit, 3 cutting edge drum sensors, a laptop and a stepsequencer. About ‘Perceive Reality’: Opener Belief bursts the record into life, as skittering arpeggios spin across a vast open plain of pad synths, before the ground splits beneath it with thrashing drums. On Conceived, Davide creates a simultaneously dark and euphoric wall of crystallised sound, a cacophony of pounding drum hits and icy electronic stabs, with an intensity that continues into Collide. With its shuddering, cut-out reverbed synth pads split in two by crashing cymbals and snares, the song spins itself into a transformative cycling trance, before slowly fading and washing away into silence, only to be broken by Conjectures’ sudden cymbal slams and transfixed toms that roll like thunder into a frenzy, before their final lightning strike. On Subjective, arpeggios twist around beating kick drums and toms, quickly scaling to a furious yet tightly wound sequence that envelops the listener, before Relief, where the album finally takes the shape of a huge wave of calm, glimmering hope and reflection. 1. Vinyl is limited to 500 copies on black vinyl, no download card. Sunzoom have been making a stir from their Liverpool base and this highly anticipated debut is not to be missed.. Building a makeshift studio in the kitchen of his North Liverpool home (and deciding to name the new project SUNZOOM after a favourite Beefheart track) songwriter Greg McVeigh set about learning the processes of home recording from the ground up. The album theme draws upon the peculiar aspects of lockdown; isolation, spiritual introspection, longing to be somewhere else, weird dreams, drinking too much and takes the listener on a journey of escape. The songs move the record through fields, countries, time, space, memories and longings to finally end back at home in the reality of the four walls. Digging into some past unreleased recordings, poems, unfinished snippets of tunes and writing new songs (usually sung into his phone during months of daily beach walks with his dog) Greg began to build a record within the claustrophobic environment of summer 2020. Friends were able to collaborate (by the magic of old recordings and new parts sent via email) and in early 2021 Sunzoom entered ARK Recording Studios in Liverpool to add live drums and vocal parts subsequently spending a month mixing the record back home in the familiar surroundings of the kitchen where the concept first began. The result is a snapshot of the period that magically transforms personal and public strife into glorious pop-folk psychedelia. 1. The Sun's Everlasting 2. Pour Me Another Wine 3. Anytime Soon 4. THE SMILE

A Light for Attracting Attention

STREET DATE: June 17th, 2022

“Not The Smile as in ha-ha-ha, more The Smile as in the guy who lies to you every day”… so speaks Thom Yorke on the inspiration behind the name of the new trio consisting of himself, his Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner of UK jazz outfit Sons of Kemet. The description is borne out by The Smile’s acerbic first single “You Will Never Work In Television Again,” a 2:48 blast of ragged, raw energy that moved The New York Times to rave: “Over a bruising 5/4 beat and flailing guitars climbing through three chords, Yorke snarl-sings his avenging fury at ‘some gangster troll promising the moon’ who’d devour ‘all those beautiful young hopes and dreams,’ and you can almost feel the spittle flying.”

Songs My Friends Wrote is an album I’ve been threatening to make for years. It’s a bunch of tracks that are my versions of a bunch of…songs my friends wrote. I’m fortunate to count a lot of world class songwriters as good pals and I wanted to shine a little light on some of my favorite examples of their work. In most cases I’ve picked relatively obscure songs that have always spoken to me, even though many of them won’t be so familiar to people. The best part about recording all these tunes was that they reminded me of all the people who I haven’t been able to hang out with for the past two years because of the plague we’ve all been dealing with. All of these tunes bring a smile to my face and I hope they do the same for you. - Corb Lund

Amongst unexplored and inaccessible valleys lies one of the last sanctuaries of the wild world, where rare and undiscovered fauna lives. Vincent Munier, one of the world’s most renowned wildlife photographers takes the adventurer and novelist Sylvain Tesson (In the Forest of Siberia) with him on his latest mission. For several weeks, they’ll explore these valleys searching for unique animals and try to spot the snow leopard, one of the rarest and most difficult big cats to approach. •Ellis explains how Cave and himself came to be involved : “There is something about the heart of this film that draws you in. I realised after a day, that I wanted to do whatever it took to compose an entire original score. The film deserved to have its own musical voice. I booked five days and asked Nick if he could come in for a day to write a theme song and play some piano. He saw the film and stayed for four days. In the end we made what I think is one of the most beautiful films we have ever worked on. One of my favourite experiences ever working on a project. The stars are the animals in all their wild glory, as we have never seen them before, and man in reverence and wonder.” •‘An elegant, layered and affecting collaboration, a piece of work that allows for both space and nuance to create something quite philosophical and spiritual’ - ★★★★ The Irish Times •‘Don’t miss it hiding in the soundtrack wilds” - ★★★★ MOJO

•‘Yet another triumph for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ - ★★★★ MusicOMH

OVERVIEW On Love is Yours, Flasher feels weightless. The band’s 2018 debut, Constant Image, was a triumph – a set of songs both dizzy and explosive, balancing new-wave lushness and post-punk frenzy. Love is Yours steps up the ambition and reaches for the horizon. The record is ablaze with mood, melody, and carefully threaded hooks, finding the band foregrounding the pop sensibilities that had always been present in their previous releases. It retains the attitude that was fundamental to the band’s DIY roots, but cuts loose a touch of the angst. Though the songs process disillusionment and loss, the music evokes warmth and optimism. It is their best record and also their most generous. The album was written and recorded amid a moment of flux for the band. Now a duo, guitarist Taylor Mulitz and drummer Emma Baker had to reimagine Flasher’s voice. They embraced uncertainty and allowed their roles to become unfixed. They wrote collaboratively and followed their intuition. Instruments were swapped, harmonies were layered over samples, and a space was created for Baker to step out from behind the drumkit into a front person, sharing vocals alongside Mulitz. On the other end Flasher emerged familiar, but also stronger and more singular. The bulk of Love is Yours was recorded in Washington, D.C. with long-time friend Owen Wuerker, who also helped flesh out the instrumentation by contributing additional bass, percussion, synths, and guitar. Rather than binding the duo to its past – to geography, old habits, or trusted sounds – the familiar environment proved liberating. Working out of Wuerker’s well appointed home-studio allowed inspiration to arrive off deadline. With no shows in sight, Flasher could relax on presenting as a “rock” band. Baker and Mulitz tweaked tempos, structures, and dynamics accordingly. They toyed with genre, melody, and texture. When it was first completed, Mulitz was shy about sharing the album, worrying that old friends would find the new sounds unrecognizable. Love is Yours is unquestionably made up of Flasher’s DNA, but it’s true that something pivotal has shifted. If Constant Image found the band tightening up and transcending its basement-punk roots, Love is Yours marks another, major moment of ascent, this time toward something that’s easy to embrace, but harder to pin down – still thrilling, but newly illuminated and entirely their own.

Mapache

Roscoe's Dream The finished product is an ode to the past as well as a bridge forward. Covers of songs like Bo Diddley’s “Diana” and Gabby Pahinui’s “Kaua‘i Beauty” act as nods to heroes of theirs while originals like “Man and Woman” and “Pearl to the Swine” take the template of golden-age rock and lovingly deconstruct it in a modernist lens. “(They Don’t Know) At the Beach” was inspired by the idea of what trailblazing oldies DJ Art Laboe might like—but the gentle ripper of a song would fit right in at a backyard party in 2022. Hard to imagine after years of being roommates, Finch and Blasucci are also bridging forward in new ways themselves. After the album was in the can, Finch decided to get a little closer to the water by moving to Malibu, and Blasucci moved about an hour north to Ojai with his girlfriend (and Roscoe, of course). But they’re not worried about the new distance slowing them down: “I think if anything it will be bringing more things to the table,” Blasucci considers. “We’re just expanding out in different directions.” “A groove so strong you can basically hear the sunshine.” — NPR Music “If the Everly Brothers cruised back from a high desert road trip and landed at County Line beach and cracked a beer to watch the sunset – you’d have these guys...Mapache’s chemistry is undeniable and their creative circle seems to be flourishing.” — KCRW “Quintessentially laid-back. This is Sunday morning music, best experienced within walking distance of Big Sur or Joshua Tree.” — UNCUT “Medicine for the soul.” — Shindig "Cosmic California Country." — THE CURRENT

Roscoe is a road dog. The 14-year-old Boston Terrier has been there for the whole ride of Mapache, Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci’s band, which has grown from being the casual project of two longtime buds to one of the most formidable cosmic-folk acts around. “Roscoe’s been through a lot of shit,” says Blasucci, the dog’s formal owner. “He’s been all around the country, come on tour a little bit.” With some bemused pride, Finch points out that, for a few years, he and Blasucci bunked together in a room in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles that was just big enough to fit two twin beds. “It was the two of us and the dog,” he laughs. Naturally, Roscoe has found himself the subject of a good handful of Mapache songs in the past—and on Roscoe’s Dream, the band’s third LP of originals, he takes center stage. (That’s him in quilt form on the album cover.) “I Love My Dog” opens up the album with a blissed-out stack of acoustic guitars and a lyrical explanation of one of Roscoe’s many talents: “I love my dog / Keepin’ the policeman out.” Just as much an easygoing trip with Gram Parsons into the desert as a mad dash with the Grateful Dead away from the law, Roscoe’s Dream is the purest distillation yet of the distinct Mapache sound, which has been brewing for many years now. Finch and Blasucci first met as students at La Cañada High School, just north of Los Angeles: “There wasn’t much supervision or anything,” remembers Blasucci. “It was really nice. And we got to just play guitars together.” The two stayed friends through their college years—Finch went to Chico State and Blasucci spent two years as a missionary in Mexico—and eventually they ended up back in L.A., spending their days playing guitar together once again, just like old times. Working with producer/engineer Dan Horne (Cass McCombs, Allah-Lahs), they recorded two albums of originals (2017’s Mapache and 2020’s From Liberty Street) as well an album of covers, 2021’s 3. Often trading solos, and occasionally switching from English to Spanish, Finch and Blasucci are now a well-oiled machine. So when it came time to record Roscoe’s Dream, they didn’t mess with the formula. The band booked some time at Horne’s Lone Palm Studio and called in a handful of friends to play additional parts, including Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks on melodica and lap steel on a couple tracks. The family affair has always been how the band likes to work, but this time they approached it on a grander scale than before, recording live as a full group in some cases, as opposed to working over Finch and Blasucci’s initial guitar/vocal parts. “It was a bit more of a band experience,” explains Finch.

PATRICE RUSHEN - STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART - LTD WHITE VINYL Strut present a special limited edition of Patrice Rushen’s landmark 1982 album, pressed on double white vinyl. Recorded during Elektra’s drive for ‘sophisticated dance music’ as many jazz artists created their own arrangements of disco and boogie, the sessions marked a progression for Patrice as she began exploring sonics as much as songwriting. “I was looking at different ways to experiment with the sounds on my records. Synths widened the palette available to us.” Singles from the album included ‘Breakout!’, ‘Number One’ and the global hit ‘Forget Me Nots’. “Bassist Freddie Washington played the bassline during a jam at my family’s house. I caught it, we kept messing around with the groove, then I developed the lyrics and chorus. It was just about recognising that moment when it came up.” “When I delivered the album to the label, the A&R said, ‘we don’t like anything on here.’ I realised quickly that they would give us no support so producer Charles Mims, myself and Freddie decided to engage a promotion company ourselves to start working the single. Although it took a while to pick up support, it paid off.” The single hit no. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1982 and the album became Patrice’s best seller globally from her time with Elektra / Asylum, securing a Grammy nomination. In more recent years, the album has become a regular source for samples in the world of hip hop and R&B. Most famously, Will Smith’s theme for the film ‘Men In Black’ and George Michael’s ‘Fastlove’ were both based, to varying degrees, on ‘Forget Me Nots’. Strut’s new reissue of ‘Straight From The Heart’ is released on 9th April 2021. LP and CD are presented in their full original artwork and feature bonus 12” versions of the album’s singles including a previously unreleased extended mix of ‘Tired Of Being Alone’. Package includes rare photos by Bobby Holland and a new interview with Patrice Rushen. All tracks remastered from the original tapes by Technology Works.

BENNIE MAUPIN & ADAM RUDOLPH – SYMPHONIC TONE POEM FOR BROTHER YUSEF Strut present an exclusive collaboration between two jazz greats, Bennie Maupin and Adam Rudolph, on ‘Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef’, originally commissioned by the Angel City Jazz festival in Claremont, to mark the late, great Yusef Lateef’s 100th birthday on 9th October, 2020. The album weaves a magical, meditative path across five movements, combining electronics, saxophone, voices and Rudolph’s wide palette of percussion from hand drums to thumb pianos and gongs. “I learned so much from Yusef about intervals,” explains Rudolph. “Greats like Yusef, Ornette Coleman and Coltrane stopped using traditional harmonic forms and introduced systems of working with intervals. So, there was an intellectual process with this album, but mostly it was just intuitive. What I love about intuition is that it erases its own tracks behind it. On the 5th Movement of this album, I was working around a major seventh but 90% of what happened was instinctive. It is a unique moment; you can’t go back and recreate it.” Both artists bring unparalleled experience to the project. Detroit’s Bennie Maupin is best known for his work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters and Eddie Henderson. Chicago percussionist Adam Rudolph was Yusef Lateef’s percussionist for 20 years and has worked with many other jazz luminaries including Pharoah Sanders, Wadada Leo Smith and Don Cherry. His work with Mandingo Griot Society during the ‘70s and ‘80s and, more recently, leading Hu Vibrational and Go Organic Orchestra constantly break new ground in the use and context of percussion. “Brother Yusef was a luminous being who continues to be an inspiration to so many of us,” continues Rudolph. “He was a great teacher, not only of music, but also of how to live as an artist and as a human being.” ‘Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef’ is released on LP, CD and digital. The album is mastered by Technology Works and cover art is by Nancy Jackson, based on a Lateef saying, "Have you noticed the leaves waving to you? It's okay to wave back.”

Mal Devisa - Kiid le under: experimental r & b

Info: Mal Devisa is the songwriting, liberation, and poetry project of multifarious artist Deja Carr. Starting in 2014 and breaking through with 2016’s Kiid, Mal Devisa’s work spans a selfmade spectrum of sound from gravitic, soulful rock to soliloquy to unabashed hip hop. Although known for her unmistakable, smoldering voice and loop-based, bass-forward compositions, Carr’s talents also extend to reaches of spoken word and production, paralleled by aspirations to start both a youth foundation and Afrobeat orchestra. Such boundless inspiration is a central facet of Mal Devisa’s work, whose sonically and narratively unrestrained passages teem with empathy and liberatory visions for a better world.

Body/Dilloway/Head self-titled LP-TLR-135x

Format: LP (with download) UPC: 634457078666

This record is the most head-on excavation of temporal fallibility that I’ve heard in a very, very long time. Aaron Dilloway operates as a solo artist, but collaborates ceaselessly, whether as a former member of Wolf Eyes or in innumerable other contexts. Body/Head is the duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace. Nace has charted an iconoclastic trajectory as a freewheeling improviser and composer on his own and in group settings. Gordon, best known as a member of Sonic Youth, was always active outside that band during its existence and continues to expand her tireless horizons since its dissolution. To put it plain, on Body/Dilloway/Head there are guitars and vocals and magnetic tape and amplification. These elements interact with the aid of effects machines. But the technical aspects of how it was crafted matter not a whit. Plus, any attempt to describe the nature of this particular collaboration is fraught. It’s impossible to say where lines might get drawn, because there simply aren’t any. Even the boundaries between processing and playing are erased. Every time it sounds like Aaron Dilloway processing Body/Head, you blink or turn your head and it sounds like Body/Head playing Aaron Dilloway. You can sift back through the tributaries of this formidable collective discography and be just as flummoxed. The similarities and the distinctions are endless. It’s impossible to tell where one stops and the other starts. The shifts in the pieces can seem to come out of nowhere. Over and over one gets the sense that the music is trying to wake itself from a dream. Gordon and Nace’s guitars churn against Dilloway’s serpentine loops and squealing treatments. The components entwine like brambles, crawling and building, moving even when seeming to rest. It starts with a low hum and some garbled murmurings. Birth should have been like that, you might find yourself thinking. It threatens to start. It halts. It holds. It hovers. It lurches. Dilloway’s hand looms large, and after a while, the familiar pulse of Nace and Gordon’s guitars enters, and as soon as you start to orient yourself, you’re lost again. The atmospheres melt into one another. The piece arcs slowly. Plateaus and vistas. This is the side-long lead-off, “Body/Erase.” Flip the record over. “Goin’ Down” is almost plaintive in feel, yet mathematical in structure. There’s something about the way it occurs in time. There’s a place somewhere in the brain (mine, at least) where the wide open vistas of desert highways and the compulsive interior pressure of insomniac experience meet and twirl and dance and laugh and shudder. It’s exhausting and exhilarating, familiar and strange, terrifying and comforting, but it’s the only place I’ve ever been that seems like a deity might be nearby, so it’s cool to find a track that evokes that. “Secret Cuts” starts off like a sentient machine breathing heavily in the summer heat, and then begins to subsume itself many times over. Fragments of Gordon’s vocals flutter in and out, traversing blurred clouds. Amp noise gurgles. Guitar loops stutter. The piece builds to a shimmering mirage, then nose-dives into still black waters and shorts out like a downed power line. If disquieting drama appeals to you, the notion has perhaps here reached its sonic peak. One of this music’s many pleasures is the inability to identify specific emotions within it, despite the undeniable emotional responses it elicits. These are memories of moods, nascent feelings we haven’t grown into yet. This record is as disorienting a listening experience as you’re likely to encounter these days, and in a world this fucked up, that’s really saying something. Handle with care. SALES POINTS - The debut album resulting from Body/Head (the duo of Kim Gordon [Sonic Youth, solo] and Bill Nace) handing over previously unreleased studio sessions to Aaron Dilloway (solo, formerly of Wolf Eyes) for processing and editing. The result is unmistakably a synthesis of all of their sounds and styles, a sum that makes sense and leaves you wondering “how didn’t this happen sooner?” Prior Body/Head titles on Matador and Feeding Tube. Prior Dilloway titles on Hanson and many others. - Following immediate sell out of first edition prior to street date, this is a limited second (and final?) edition (approximately 500 copies) 140g black vinyl LP housed within a jacket and with full color insert both bearing new collage artwork by Bill Nace (with multi-format Bandcamp-enabled download). - “…a thrilling mutation of all three artists’ signature sounds” Jonathan Williger, Pitchfork - “The overall effect is that of a mutated being, inexplicably functional but undeniably alive, slowly making sense of the alien world in which it finds itself.” Raymond Cummings, The Wire - “It’s only natural to feel disorientation at the outset of each of these pieces, but their destination is often the best kind of euphoric surprise.” Jeff Terich, Treble - “…engulfing, hallucinatory pieces…” Heather Phares, AllMusic - “…a lucid yet disorienting experience…” Michael Swiz, +Recommended Listen - RIYL: Body/Head, Bill Nace (solo), Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon (solo), Aaron Dilloway (solo), musique concrète, instrumental rock, out music, self-improvement.

Cool Original - outtakes from bad summer le under: bedroom pop electronic indie rock pop rock

Info: In his previous work, avid and proli c home recordist Nathan Tucker never put much effort into exploring the depths of music production software, relying more on simple mixing techniques and the happy accidents that sometimes occur in home studios. But with more time on his hands due to pandemic lockdowns, the cool original bandleader set out to learn more about computer production in order to enrich his work with the compositional sophistication afforded by working in a digital audio workstation. Owing to this newfound recording knowledge, there is a distinct, refreshing current that charges outtakes from “bad summer”, the latest full-length album from Philly-via-Portland’s cool original (FKA cool american). What under other circumstances might have been a string of homespun indie rock songs is instead an energized pop-focused collection of tracks born from what Tucker describes as “the contrast between total formlessness and rigid claustrophobia”.

Track List: 1. monad, no windows 2. waiting around 3. the override has been overridden 4. can't wrap my head around it 5. i just need a second 6. the tool is the material 7. breaking my own rules 8. i lost myself 9. totalizing art product 10. u and me both 11. bad summer

As heard almost immediately on album opener “monad, no windows”, an electric atmosphere envelops outtakes from “bad summer”. Pitch-shifted vocal samples and previously-scrapped drum recordings ll out the overture, setting the table for a patchwork of repurposed, resampled ideas shaped into songs that rarely end up in the same place they started. The unhurried and sentimental “i just need a second” boasts the full spectrum of cool original’s songwriting prowess: foregrounded, infectious melody over subtly chopped and screwed drums comprise the foundation for Tucker’s own take on a classic road song—a marked contrast to “breaking my own rules”, an experimental pop number unlike any previous cool original work. Similar contrasts abound throughout outtakes, making for a listening experience that’s equal parts rejuvenating and unpredictable.

About: Even in its moodiest, most downbeat moments there’s a spark of energy that bursts out of A Face In Your Life, the new album from Pet Fox. Where past efforts played around with after-thefact layering of instrumentation, the band’s third full-length comes alive in the moment. Tracked live in one room, the ten songs that unravel across the album capture Theo Hartlett (Guitar/Vocals), Morgan Luzzi (Bass), and Jesse Weiss (Drums) in their rawest, most immediate form. An inspired collection of riffs that twists and turns into varying shapes throughout, Pet Fox never outstay their welcome in the half-an-hour of A Face In Your Life but do more than enough to make the kind of impression that leaves you wanting to journey back through the shadows, to unpick the little knots of the ideas they’re exploring here. It was brought to life by just three people in one room but it lends itself to something way beyond that; the neverending search for coping mechanisms in the messiest of worlds. Tracklist 1. EDITRIX Editrix II: Editrix Goes To Hell 6.17.2022

Release Information: EIS122 Genre: Punk, Progressive Configuration: LP Street Date: 6.17.2022 Vinyl UPC: 806102122691 Vinyl Box Lot: 40 Key Markets: New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia

About: Editrix is as if you took music that is borderline classical in its crystalline perfection and obsessive attention to detail, and then played it through Kurt Cobain's Rat pedal, with not a shred of piety or decorum. From the first slide guitar notes of the opening title track, this is doom-laden nihilism lovingly decorated in heart stickers. It is caring, pretending not to care, resisting the emotive signals so abused in mainstream, which is what tells you that it really does care. It is sweet and sour and spicy and salty and bitter and umami, and cooked using only homegrown local ingredients. It is the synthesis of the dialectic and the clarion call of the proletarian revolution. Editrix's second album is a second series of little enlightenments. This is haiku rock, its minimal lyrics compressing novels into a few syllables. It sounds like it came to their heads like bolt of lightning. Tracklist 1. Editrix Goes To Hell 2. The Hunt 3. Queering Ska 4. One Truck Gone 5. Cowboy 6. Hieroglyphics 7. Horse Girls 8. Gut Project 9. I Can Hear It 10. Two Questions 11. Mythic Victims 12. Time Can't Be Redeemed

Marketing Points Editrix is touring with Deerhoof in May 2022 Just under 100,000 Spotify streams for their debut record since its release in Feb 2021 Highly anticipated follow-up to their debut full-length which was covered by Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, Talkhouse, FLOOD and many others

PRAISES IN THIS YEAR: HIEROPHANT Praises returns with a full band and their second studio album In This Year: Hierophant. Through instinct, talent and of course, blind luck, Praises harnessed their sound through the course of the pandemic, leaning into the creative spirit and a recording process reminiscent of a Bad Seeds project, key players wrote their parts from only a demo track and a feeling. The result pushes beyond their industrial synth-based offerings, incorporating the intensity of their highly regarded live performances with an intimate, collaborative and distanced songwriting process. As with their highly acclaimed debut album, In This Year: Ten Of Swords, Jesse Crowe works with career-long collaborator Josh Korody (Beliefs, Breeze, Candle Studio) on the mix and with Heather Kirby mastering (Dreamlands). Every new year Crowe draws a tarot card to represent what is to come, shaping the character of the coming album and its title. On In This Year: Hierophant, Praises delves deeper into a world of hypnotic vocals, textured synths and arrangements to transcendent effect. This album expands Praises' sonic palette stylistically and lyrically, exploring themes of human reckoning and hope. Above all, this is clearly an album made by a band who love working together. "This record dances like a story book, flirting with vignettes of hidden gender, through the birth of a child, a poisonous new world, matriarchal death, and transcendent love. A graduation beyond a solo project." - Crowe

Praises first emerged at a time when Beliefs co-front, Jesse Crowe, struggled to find an outlet to release their inner conversations into a public forum. Into a place where their creative outlet has evolved and spanned over a course of four EPs and two albums. Dark and theatrical, Crowe’s influences move through the hum of Rachel Goswell's shoegazing, the drive of Patti Smith's poetic delivery, blending the art-gloom of Beth Gibbons' sultry jazz with Annie Lennox' avant-gardism found on a "Night Full of Tension" and "Sweet Surprise." A unique mixing which "makes Praises’ dark nights of the soul feel hypnotic, carving out territory between Bat for Lashes and Nick Cave's Skeleton Key." (Exclaim! Magazine) The songs on this new record grew both slowly and reflective. "March" is a call to action and a sister song to "A World on Fire" from EP4. The song explores the gaslighting of colonial extraction industries and the culpability of those who stay silent, beginning with a motorik beat and crafting the tension with a full band in tow. "Life is Just a Picture" is a song that breathes with both the sorrow and joy of a lifetime of memories, it was written in dedication to the intermingling stories of Grandma Upton and Granny Crowe. "In the years following the Me Too movement, it can feel as though every safe feeling male mentor will be exposed as an abuser" reflects Crowe, "the song "Our Father" is a letter to Nick Cave, and is meant to playfully invoke his tone as a means to warn him against ever being a pig." In This Year: Hierophant is released June 17th 2022.

Mickey O’Brien Shift Change Boxlot 30 LP-HAN-068C CLEAR VINYL WITH GOLD SPLATTER Canadian rap artist and working-class poet Mickey O’Brien spent the past few years focused on one thing: crafting great art. Even prior to his emergence as a solo artist in 2019, while still a member of rap-rock outfit Kill the Autocrat, O’Brien proved himself a powerful voice of the north for hip-hop. Representing Sudbury, ON, his music captures a fresh and exciting perspective - one that is both universally human and distinctly Northern Ontario. Mickey O’Brien is excited to share his most musically ambitious, vivid, and honest record yet. For his second full-length release, Shift Change (Hand’Solo Records), he evolves his sound and brings his most evocative and diverse pen game yet. To accomplish the former, O’Brien continues his symbiotic, creative relationship with Juno-nominated producer and live beat champion Fresh Kils and enlists live musicians such as keyboardist Zachary Clement, blues musician Tommy Fyfe, jazz saxophonist Alan Walsh, and turntablist DJ SLAM! to add exciting combinations, texture and their own unique imprint to the songs. To accomplish the latter, O’Brien takes us on a journey of self-transformation that goes from night to day and dark to light, enlisting the assistance of Premrock, Ultra Magnus, Juno-nominee D-Sisive, and BET Freestyle Champion Young Stitch. A strong female presence was equally important to O’Brien, with Eyeda Sophia providing powerful rhymes for the title track while Ice tha One, Annie Q, and Sarah Craig all bring their own distinct singing styles. Workers’ anthem “Cap Lamp” features the voice of acclaimed folksinger Anne Feeney, North America’s foremost labour singer and a good friend of O’Brien’s who sadly passed away in 2021. A hard-rock miner working thousands of feet underground, O’Brien is a blue-collar worker who excels at compelling stories, ‘no BS’ observations, and skilful, conversational lyricism. On Shift Change, O’Brien gives us a realistic glimpses into the mind of someone suffering from addiction (“Bill Wilson”), meditates on his own gratitude and progress in life (“Grace”), and attacks the dangers of belief and those who use it to control and exploit (“Hubris”). The record is equally packed with fun moments amongst these more serious tones.

Phil Odgers - Ghosts Of Rock N Roll Vinyl Star Records LP

VSRLP012

5024545947212

Released on vinyl for the first time for Record store day. ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ is the fifth solo album from Men They Couldn’t Hang frontman Phil Odgers and is preceded by the digital single ‘The Serpent, The Maiden and The Bear’ which hit #5 in the OFFICIAL UK FOLK CHART in September 2021. Beginning as a collection of ukulele led demos, ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ has endured a stormy birth and its final emergence represents the triumph of resilience over adversity. Originally funded via Pledge Music, the album was nearly strangled at birth by the collapse of Pledge Music in 2018 and the loss of the majority of fan investment. Despite this setback, all fan pledges were still fulfilled and the project relocated to Bandcamp just in time for the pandemic lockdown to prevent any further recording sessions with producer Jim Knight. Finally, the album inched forward over the summer of 2020 only to crash into the second lockdown and then the tragic loss of fellow TMTCH frontman Stefan Cush in February 2021. With such checkered history, ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ seems an appropriate title and its combination of folky pop and melancholic twang, combined with an ethos of survival, memory and experience create a testament to a life spent sailing the sometimes treacherous waters of Rock and Roll. The vinyl album features guest appearances by Sid Griffin and Bobby Valentino and two extra tracks not available on the CD version. Sleeve design is by visual artist Aly fell and the vinyl album includes a limited-edition art print pencil drawing of Cush and Swill giving it large on stage at Shepherds Bush Empire. rag City grandly presents Whirlybird (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring all-new music by Ty Segall, created for Matt Yoka’s compelling new documentary. Released to great acclaim in Summer 2021, Whirlybird tells the story of Zoey Tur and Marika Gerrard, former partners and founders of the Los Angeles News Service, and deftly tracks their extraordinary and often-reckless pursuit of breaking news throughout the 80s and 90s — a time in which they pioneered the use of a helicopter to report on Los Angeles at its most chaotic, capturing historical moments like the 1992 riots and the O.J. Simpson slow speed pursuit. Through striking interviews and one-of-a-kind archival footage,Yoka’s documentary expertly tells the story of Zoey and Marika’s unraveling marriage as they singlehandededly changed broadcast news forever. These two arcs intertwine to create an electric view of the encroaching intensities of that era, when the 24-hour news cycle first rose up to dominate our national consciousness. Ty Segall has previously scored

scenes and interstitial bits for film and video things here and there — but this is his first full-on feature film score, a work done in collaboration with the director, whose friendship and creative partnership with Ty has grown over a decade-plus of music videos and other projects. Working off notes and feels from Matt and responding to the images and story

on screen, Ty crafted some of his most creative arrangements to date, using synth, drum machine, Wurlitzer keyboard, guitars, drums and percussion (plus saxes played by Mikal Cronin, who also cowrote the title track with Ty) to articulate a multitude of tones running through the film. For a shape-shifter like Ty, this apex of tone color is no mean feat, an achievement further highlighted by the full set of pieces. Rather than simply throw a bunch of songs-with-singing at the project, Ty’s score perfectly epitomizes the film’s ethos, providing an instrumental counterpart that dialogues with and helps frame the film’s provocative themes and images. As both Matt and Ty are natives to the Southern Californian milieu, particularly the era Whirlybird depicts, their collaboration involved a journey through their past. In realizing the music, they revisited their own Los Angeles awakenings, adding another personal layer to the deeply felt meditations and elegies sighted by the remarkable Whirlybird — now an equally thrilling counterpart to be experienced through the original soundtrack.
