“Around the making of the album, Fruit Bats had coalesced into a duo with Gillian Lisée and myself. It was sort of like our own mini cocaine-free version of Rumors. She wrote the bridge to ‘Magic Hour,’ which is totally about her. We also co-wrote ‘Track Rabbits’ together which is still one of my favorite things I've ever done and probably my favorite song on Mouthfuls.” “I wrote ‘When U Love Somebody’ at the very last minute right before we started to record. It was kind of the throwaway track, which of course became by far the most popular song on the album and still probably the most popular Fruit Bats song, I was just trying to make something that sounded like Ray Davies, or even more specifically The Beatles’ ‘Two of Us.’ Also, I spelled ‘you’ with a ‘U’ to reference Prince. People still like dancing to this one at our shows and I’m still cool with playing it.” “Brian Deck was the wizard on this one, plain and simple. I really just wanted to make something that sounded like Nilsson or Ray Davies or psychy-folky, but Brian had the concept for folding in electronics and weirdness. There’s a lot of headphone ear candy on this record, which at times sounds really smallsounding at first listen but is really pretty orchestrated.”

black midi’s follow-up to Schlagenheim is a dynamic, hellacious, inventive success. Cavalcade, their second studio album for Rough Trade, scales beautiful new heights, reaching ever upwards from an already lofty base of early achievements. Ground was broken on Cavalcade in those now weird seeming pre-pandemic days of 2019. Songs that had been brewing since the release of Schlagenheim in July began muscling their way onto set lists and finally became individual entities by October, getting refined in between an extensive world tour and a scorching turn at the UK’s Mercury Prize ceremony. But then, just as they were gearing up to record the album, the pandemic hit. Eventually the band found themselves in the aptly named Hellfire Studios, a remote Irish facility in the Wicklow Mountains, south of Dublin, wherein you can hear all the planets align for this recording session. Cavalcade is dynamic in its musical ambition above all else. black midi listen widely and deeply not just to rock and jazz but to hip hop, electronic dance music, classical, ambient, prog, experimental... and they are quick to bat away any suggestion that it’s a risky strategy drawing from such a wide source of influences. Geordie says simply: “If you worry about that before you start you’re limiting yourself.You have to try because you could either end up with a madman’s breakfast or you could end up with a fantastic kaleidoscope and the only way to find out which one it’s going to be is to try. If you fail, so what? Try again.” The armory of additional instruments on Cavalcade includes (just to name a few) cello, sax, grand piano, accordion, violin, trombone, two bouzoukis, a late 19th Century zither called a Marxophone, flute, lap steel, synths, and yes, a wok. Spend some time with Cavalcade and you’ll acknowledge black midi are back with the biggest of bangs.

“Nurture” is an album about hope, overcoming despair, faithfully pursuing a sense of purpose, and trying to prove that it’s worthwhile to try. This album came about during a period of intense creative and emotional struggle. I had structured my life around the expectation that the only thing that made me happy was writing music. But it was exactly that obsession and imbalance that made writing music an impossibility for me for years. I wanted it too much, was highly self-critical, and I was so scared that I wouldn’t ever be able to write music again. And the more desperate I became to write music, the harder it became. Only by accepting that I might never be able to do it again, and by embracing and trying to find happiness in aspects of life outside of music, was I able to slowly claw my way into being able to do it again. And on the other side of all this fear and anxiety, I found this life-giving sort of light and beauty. I felt a gratitude towards real life that I used to only feel towards fiction. I’m really, deeply glad that I wrote this album. It’s my favorite music I’ve ever made, and it made me feel purposeful and happy to write music again. I want to write music that tells people that an earnest and sincere effort to overcome that thing you’re struggling with is the best path forward. There’s no shortage of fuel for despair and nihilism, but I’ve found that those things don’t help. I want the listener to know that even when it seems impossible and insurmountable, it’s worthwhile to do your best, that there’s no shame in hope, and that purpose and meaning are worth pursuing.

The indie rock band had long been nurtured within Auckland, New Zealand’s tight-knit music scene, working full-time during the day and playing music with friends after hours. Full of uptempo pop rock songs with bright, indelible hooks, the LP garnered them critical acclaim from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and they set out for their first string of shows overseas. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across North America and Europe. They found themselves playing to crowds of devoted fans and opening for acts like Pixies and Death Cab for Cutie. Almost instantly, The Beths turned from a passion project into a full-time career in music. Songwriter and lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on what would become The Beths’ second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like the group’s earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Stokes’s writing on Jump Rope Gazers grapples with the uneasy proposition of leaving everything and everyone you know behind on another continent, chasing your dreams while struggling to stay close with loved ones back home. “If you’re at a certain age, all your friends scatter to the four winds,” Stokes says. “We did the same thing. When you’re home, you miss everybody, and when you’re away, you miss everybody. We were just missing people all the time.”

With songs like the rambunctious “Dying To Believe” and the tender, shoegazey “Out of Sight,” The Beths reckon with the distance that life necessarily drives between people over time. People who love each other inevitably fail each other. “I’m sorry for the way that I can’t hold conversations/They’re such a fragile thing to try to support the weight of,” Stokes sings on “Dying to Believe.” The best way to repair that failure, in The Beths’ view, is with abundant and unconditional love, no matter how far it has to travel. On “Out of Sight,” she pledges devotion to a dearly missed friend: “If your world collapses/I’ll be down in the rubble/I’d build you another,” she sings.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble formed in 2000 as a project to compose new music for existing silent movies. Jason Köhnen and Gideon Kiers, both graduates of the Utrecht School of Arts, combined their audio and visual skills to reinterpret classic movies by F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu) and F. Lang (Metropolis). In 2004 UK trombonist Hilary Jeffery and Swiss cellist Nina Hitz joined TKDE to record this self-titled debut album which was released in May 2006. The ensuing tour saw Eelco Bosman and Paris based vocalist Charlotte Cegarra join, making the ensemble a sextet. London based violinist Sadie Anderson joined in 2008 to supply the group with extra power on stage. Together with Bohren und der Club of Gore and The Dale Cooper Quartet, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble have succeeded in creating a brand new genre of music.

May 28 will see prolific Japanese vibraphonist, multi-percussionist and composer Masayoshi Fujita mark a new sonic direction with his forthcoming album Bird Ambience on Erased Tapes. Bird Ambience brings several fresh changes for the artist. Until now, Fujita would separate his acoustic solo recordings, the electronic dub made under his El Fog alias, and his experimental improvisations with contemporaries such as Jan Jelinek. Bird Ambience sees him unite all these different facets for the first time into one singular vision. He also makes a lateral leap from his signature instrument the vibraphone – on which he created his acclaimed triptych Stories (2012), Apologues (2015) and Book of Life (2018) – to the marimba, which takes centre stage on his new album alongside drums, percussion, synths, effects and tape recorder. “The way of playing the marimba is similar to the vibraphone, so it was kind of a natural development for me and easier to start with, yet it sounds very different”, explains Masayoshi. “The marimba bars are made with wood and it has a wider range than the vibraphone, which gives me a bigger sound palette with more possibilities. I play the instrument with bows and mallets, and sometimes manipulate it with effects.” Bird Ambience also marks his liberation from fastidious preparation for past solo releases to new endeavours in improvisation. “I prioritised trying to capture the wonder which happens during those occasional magic improv moments. Sometimes the mic-ing and placement of instruments was pretty rough; things weren’t perfect and everything was done quickly, but it turned out as the final recording. Overall when I couldn’t decide between two takes, I told myself to go with the first”, Masayoshi recalls. Arranged with a perfect Kanso-like balance, the unhurried pace of Bird Ambience allows each sound and phrase enough time to be mindfully absorbed and savoured. This subtle but affective work carries ethereal remnants of Midori Takada’s minimalism, the static atmospheres of Mika Vainio, To Rococo Rot’s organics and the bucolic electronics of Minotaur Shock. Fujita vaporises contemporary and classical, ambient and dismantled dub, controlled noise and fragments of jazz into an atmospheric, static mist, which he skilfully coerces into new forms. After 13 years in Berlin, Masayoshi recently relocated to a new home and studio in the rural Japanese mountain village of Kami-cho, Hyogo, following his life-long dream of creating music in nature. Even though the album was entirely recorded in Germany before he left, it has this palpable sense of reverie found in the natural world. From there we can only imagine the kind of impact his new life in rural West Japan will have on future works.

Their �rst full-length album The Work Is Slow quietly emerged in a digital edition in December, 2020, and Hausu Mountain is honored to release its �rst physical editions. The quartet’s music sits under the wide umbrella of instrumental rock, built on �uid structures of extended repetition, propulsive rhythmic interplay, and texture-focused performance. Though Body Meπa could potentially take on the mantle of a “supergroup,” given their individual pedigrees, the band members look at the project as the culmination of years of friendship through shared social circles in New York City, which organically took shape as they established their own shared vocabulary as an ensemble. The Work Is Slow lives up to its title as its slow-burning sessions spread out into dynamic instrumental narratives with sinuous peaks and lulls in intensity. The album ripples with knotty yet trance-inducing rhythms and effect-smeared atmospheres, achieving a rare middle ground between constantly morphing rock composition and mantra-like recursion rooted in a sense of patience and a willingness to let ideas breathe across time. To list the projects that drummer Greg Fox has been a part of, both behind a drum kit and performing with synths and electronics, would require its own rundown beyond the scope of this compact bio. Most recently, his solo work has appeared on LPs released through RVNG Intl. In Body Meπa, Fox’s drumming serves both as the beating heart of the ensemble and a continual source of surprising rhythmic ornamentation. His performances give the illusion of “in�nite limbs” as he splays busy tom �lls and concentrated snare runs into tiny pockets of time, all while holding down a groove that keeps his bandmates locked in step. Fox recorded The Work Is Slow at his own Studio Te in Brooklyn. Sasha Frere-Jones founded the band Ui in the early 90s in New York, and built a genre-shattering catalog that collided elements of funk, postrock, dub, and electronic arrangement — including collaborations with Stereolab under the moniker Uilab. In Body Meπa, Frere-Jones’s guitar work generally remains rooted in a crisp tone that captures every nuance of his spidery fretwork in high de�nition. His harmonic touchstones �it between the dense chord networks of jazz, the long sustain and slight twang of Great Plains guitar a la Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack, and the fried amp distortion of the more abrasive post-punk of the American underground. Grammy-nominated journeyman bassist Melvin Gibbs has a beyonddiverse background in jazz, rock, punk, and freeform experimentalism, including collaborations with Ornette Coleman, Arto Lindsay, Sonny Sharrock, and Bill Frisell, along with stints in Rollins Band, and work with his ensembles Harriet Tubman, Defunkt, and Decoding Society. In Body Meπa, Gibbs blurs the lines between steady bedrock basslines and powerful lead playing, highlighting his bass both as a central melodic voice and as a crucial rhythmic underpinning to the spiraling explorations of his bandmates. With harmonic sensibilities �ne-tuned by decades of breaking jazz boundaries, Gibbs �oats as the solid core of the band and gently steers them down new paths in each composition. A �xture of the intertwined experimental scenes of New York City, Grey McMurray founded the duo itsnotyouitsme in the mid-2000s, and has performed with a wide array of collaborators like Colin Stetson, Olga Bell, and Sō Percussion, the last of which he composed a full-length album with in 2012. In Body Meπa, McMurray’s impressionistic guitar drips into the band’s dense arrangements in dollops of striking color, blurred by delay effects, short looping �gures, and notes frozen into standing drones. When his playing soars into �ights of heavy lead melodicism, the crackle of distortion rips through the mix in bold contrast. Arc Mountain is the �rst release created through collaboration between the artists of the LA-based label Deathbomb Arc and the Chicago-based label Hausu Mountain. The album came to life over the course of more than three years of preparation, recording, and communication between the labels’ respective rosters mediated by the curatorial efforts of the label honchos. Both institutions have dedicated themselves to showcasing experimental strains of underground music, cultivating families of forwardthinking artists who defy easy categorization and funnel the tropes of an untold inventory of disparate genres into their idiosyncratic, highly personal output. Brian Miller established Deathbomb Arc in 1998, and the label has since grown into a bastion of adventurous sound that bridges the gaps between hip-hop, noise, industrial music, and innumerable �avors of “pop” — among many other styles. Since founding Hausu Mountain in 2012, Doug Kaplan and Max Allison have built a catalog that aims to both challenge and entertain their listeners in equal measure with forays into catch-all electronic beat production, labyrinthine prog, ambient drift, and free improvisation — to name just a few of their interests. The label founders approached Arc Mountain from a curatorial perspective intent on rising above the ranks of a grab-bag “compilation” to pursue a cohesive album-length statement in which each artist links up with collaborators who complement their styles and push each other's ideas to unprecedented new peaks. With a few notable exceptions, DBA artists provided vocals for each track, while HausMo artists took on the role of production. The DBA camp features Jonathan Snipes of Clipping., Dos Monos, White Boy Scream, Fielded, SB The Moor, They Hate Change, Angry Blackmen, J Fisher, Margot Padilla, George Chen, Cooling Prongs, Strega Beata, and Sarn. The artists from the HausMo roster include Fire-Toolz, Khaki Blazer (1/2 of Moth Cock), Dustin Wong, RXM Reality, TALsounds, Mukqs, MrDougDoug, and Davey Harms. Arc Mountain’s cross-pollination manifests as a fractal blast of combinatory music that draws power from the unique personalities and compositional / vocal strategies that each artist brings to the table. The conjoined output ranges from incendiary hip-hop built over stuttering, carnivalesque beats, to visions of pop music constructed from lush melodies and otherworldly vocal harmonies, to shades of footwork and high-BPM beatcraft as glimpsed through shattered 3D glasses, to collage-like experiments with voice layering and spoken word, to some semblance of horror-score industrial music �ecked with peals of harsh noise. Arc Mountain reveals the shared threads that connect the rosters of both labels, including mutual desires to collapse conventions of song structure and legible rhythm, and the highlighting of transportive textures and contorted fragments of human input. The rappers and vocalists of Deathbomb Arc are no strangers to planting themselves over scattershot, deconstructed beats, and the Hausu Mountain artists deliver these in spades. Likewise, the artists of Hausu Mountain have long strived to incorporate elements of vocal manipulation and pop-adjacent songwriting into compositions that would otherwise seem totally alien to mainstream norms, and the Deathbomb Arc artists gleefully enable their mutant proclivities. While the pairing of DBA and HausMo might seem like a long time coming to fans of the labels, the gestation of Arc Mountain slow-burned over years of back-and-forth conceptualization, artist pairing, recording, mixing, and mastering. After �rst hatching the master plan in 2018, Miller, Kaplan, and Allison dedicated time outside of their labels’ day-to-day operations to overcome the inescapable hurdles and delays inherent to a project with so many moving parts, and ultimately became closer friends as a result of their collaboration. In addition to revealing the shared threads between the rosters of both labels, the �nal product of Arc Mountain showcases some of the innate qualities that the heads behind both labels share: a sense of humor in the face of potentially hyper-serious “avant-garde” musical tradition; a middle �nger raised to convention coupled with a peace sign to the healing, connective power of music in all forms; a sense of family that blooms over years of sharing ideas, concert bills, and daily struggles. Above all Arc Mountain stands as a tribute to the morphing, forever inde�nable institution of underground music, in which all artists, no matter how divergent their output may be, have the chance to �nd a plot of land to grow in. All proceeds from Arc Mountain will be donated to the Last Prisoner Project, the organization "committed to freeing every last prisoner of the unjust war on drugs, starting with 40,000 people in prison for cannabis offenses legal in most states."

"On Arrival is a spontaneous album trying to capture a feeling and moment in time. Recorded from the comforts of home in Toronto, periodically over the course of a year, using outdated and at best semi-functional recording equipment. Friends stopping by now and then, inevitably, would also participate even if it was just to capture a fleeting glimpse of an idea. It’s an album that was also recorded in the middle of a years long tour (see Orville Peck). A rare few days off were spent in pre winter Berlin, getting down on tape what musical ideas I could with the help of some friends from Tel-Aviv. Sessions flew by through a cloudy haze with linguistic barriers and late night jazz. After some time I collected the tapes off the shelf, brought them back to Toronto and sorted through the tracks. Smile is the pet project of Björn Y�ling & Joakim Åhlund. Björn, who is a member of famed interna�onal jet-set trio Peter, Björn and John, and also an extremely well merited writer and producer for a slew of other superstars such as Lykke Li, Primal Scream, Chrissie Hynde, Haim etc to name but a few. Joakim, or Jocke as they call him back in their na�ve Sweden, is more the freeloader here, riding on the coat-tails of his more successful colleague, but he has also been the driving force behind a couple of musical projects such as Teddybears and Caesars. He has dabbled in songwri�ng and producing also, working with Giorgio Moroder, Robyn, Charli XcX etc. Together the two form Smile, a duo, but that also some�mes contains several of their talented musician friends. ”It started out as a studio-project” says Björn. ”Me and Jocke had been wan�ng to do something together for a long �me, so we just booked some studio �me and invited som friends to have a jam session”. This jam session resulted in the first album, A Flash In The Night, which basically passed completely unno�ced by anyone except a couple of extremely dedicated connoisseurs of fine Swedish Indie-weirdness. This led the duo to quickly book more studio �me to follow up the success and catch the wave of momentum and hype, and so now, a mere 8 years later, they are ready to unleash their next EP ”Kylie”. NON FICTION N0V3L’s debut full-length, NON-FICTION, comprises 11 tracks that function as a treatise on modern existence and the perverse parameters within which it’s experienced. It’s a collection of agile, carefully constructed post-punk, new wave, funk, and garage rock that’s been zapped and warped by an opioid overdose crisis, mental illness, populism, and the merciless onward march of time. Intimate sad-nesses and structural violence’s are blurred to the jagged quirk of sharp guitars, commanding bass, acrid saxophone, and mournful keys, all propelled ever for-ward by nimble drumming. It’s dark and occasionally danceable, a macabre late-capitalist disco under a pall of confusion. NON-FICTION was written between 2017 and 2020 and recorded on a Tas-cam388 in the band’s since-torn-down rental home. Bryce Cloghesy (Military Genius, Crack Cloud) produced and mixed the record, which trades in the first EP’s martial rigidity for a broader approach to actualizing the band’s tensions.

PATRICE RUSHEN - STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART Strut present the definitive edition of Patrice Rushen’s landmark album from 1982, ‘Straight From The Heart’. Recorded during Elektra’s drive for ‘sophisticated dance music’ as many jazz artists created their own arrangements of disco and boogie, the sessions marked a progression for Patrice as she began exploring sonics as much as songwriting. “I was looking at different ways to experiment with the sounds on my records. Synths widened the palette available to us.” Singles from the album included ‘Breakout!’, ‘Number One’ and the global hit ‘Forget Me Nots’. “Bassist Freddie Washington played the bassline during a jam at my family’s house. I caught it, we kept messing around with the groove, then I developed the lyrics and chorus. It was just about recognising that moment when it came up.” “When I delivered the album to the label, the A&R said, ‘we don’t like anything on here.’ I realised quickly that they would give us no support so producer Charles Mims, myself and Freddie decided to engage a promotion company ourselves to start working the single. Although it took a while to pick up support, it paid off.” The single hit no. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1982 and the album became Patrice’s best seller globally from her time with Elektra / Asylum, securing a Grammy nomination. In more recent years, the album has become a regular source for samples in the world of hip hop and R&B. Most famously, Will Smith’s theme for the film ‘Men In Black’ and George Michael’s ‘Fastlove’ were both based, to varying degrees, on ‘Forget Me Nots’. Strut’s new reissue of ‘Straight From The Heart’ is released on 9th April 2021. MIRIAM MAKEBA - KEEP ME IN MIND “Any other singer can sing a love song and the audience will think about lovers lost and found. When I sing a love song it is a metaphor for the yearning of a subjugated people to be free.” Miriam Makeba’s ‘Keep Me In Mind’ was her last album for Reprise and reflected major changes in both her own personal life and politically within the USA. After becoming a national star globally following the success of ‘Pata Pata’ in 1967, she had fallen out publicly with her mentor and ‘Big Brother’, Harry Belafonte. Makeba made the decision to return to Africa following an invitation from President Sékou Touré of Guinea. In Conakry, Makeba met Stokely Carmichael, President of civil rights organisation the SNCC and they would later marry. “With the Vietnam War, the student protests and the riots in the ghettos, everyone is scared,” Makeba said. “Everyone is afraid that there will be a great black uprising.” Makeba’s concerts were widely cancelled and both her and Carmichael were followed relentlessly by the FBI. Reprise also terminated her contract but brought in producer Lewis Merenstein for her final recording for the label, best known for his work with Van Morrison on ‘Astral Weeks’. Merenstein suggested two Van songs for Makeba to cover, ‘Brand New Day’ from the ‘Moondance’ sessions and ‘I Shall Sing’ and further songs were added to reflect both the political climate and Makeba’s own memories including Stephen Stills’ ‘For What It’s Worth’ and Lennon & McCartney’s wistful ‘In My Life’. New compositions by Makeba and her daughter Bongi included ‘Lumumba’, a personal tribute to Congolese independence leader, Patrice Lumumba. Reflective of the times, the album is infused with a palpable despair but, as in all of her music, a quiet determination still shines through. This new reissue of ‘Keep Me In Mind’ is presented in its original artwork and features rare photos and new extensive liner notes by Francis Gooding of The Wire. Remastered from the original tapes by The Carvery.

From the irresistible title track to future singles “Happy Unhappy” and “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” Stokes commands a vocal range that spans from the brash confidence of Joan Jett to the disarming vulnerability of Jenny Lewis. OVERVIEW Hildegard is the new project from experimental singersongwriter Helena Deland and multi-instrumentalist and producer Ouri (Ourielle Auvé). On their self-titled debut album, Deland’s folk background balances against Ouri’s world of electronic and dance music. Over eight days in a studio, the Montreal-based musicians discovered an innate creative connection, building and bouncing ideas off of one another, developing an intuitive approach to composition and sound. The resulting record, Hildegard, is wholly its own. Eight tracks fuse together into a sonic sphere, named for the eight days spent together. The meeting place sounds something like dusk, or dawn. From this alchemy arises the figure of Hildegard, a woman of science, music, and spirituality. A symbol of nurturing strength, a saint with healing powers. In her 12th century presence, Hildegard wrote prophecies, poems, and treatises; she experienced otherworldly visions and recorded them, passing them down through generations. Deland and Ouri invoke Hildegard as a carrier of the magic they felt working with each other, the separate entity that was born as they blended together. Making the album was a restorative experience for both, their own version of Hildegard’s Canticles of Ecstasy. A modern encounter with the sacred and the ancient. Artist Melissa Matos developed a visual language for the project that reflects this melding and switching of identities. She imagines Hildegard as both contemporary and historic presence; the tangling of two identities beyond possibility of retreat.

This May June 7th 4th marks the release of DUNEDIN SPLEEN, New Zealand band The Verlaines first studio album in almost a decade. Formed in 1981 by principle songwriter Graeme Downes, the band was named after the French poet Paul Verlaine, from whom Television’s Tom Verlaine also lifted his stage name. The Verlaines are also one of the pioneers of the cult-followed 'Dunedin Sound' which was lifted from the explosion of talent coming out of their hometown in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The Chills, The Clean, Bailter Space, The Bats, The 3D's and the Straitjacket Fits all came roaring out of this University town. The Verlaines’ angular sound made them favorites of bands like Pavement, R.E.M., Superchunk, Cat Power, The Mountain Goats, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, Lou Barlow and many others. From 1985 to 2012, The Verlaines have released eleven albums, most of which are on the legendary New Zealand label Flying Nun. It’s been 40 years since The Verlaines came together in Dunedin, New Zealand and they remain a band with a rich history and influence, both in NZ and beyond. Featuring a blistering and brilliant nineteen tracks, Dunedin Spleen was originally released exclusively on Vinyl for Record Store Day 2020 via North Carolina indie Schoolkids Records. 180g black vinyl w/ gatefold sleeve. On April 30th, the French three-piece Veik will release their debut album, ‘Surrounding Structures’. Centred around vintage analogue synths and abrasive instrumentation, the band’s experimental post-punk is rooted in the 70s avant-garde, most notably Krautrock and No Wave. They reel off groups like Implog, Suicide or Indoor Life as inspirations, whilst existing in a similar world to contemporaries like Beak>, Suuns and Girl Band. Due for release on London-based label Fuzz Club Records, ‘Surrounding Structures’ arrives off the back of a handful of EPs and singles, tours around Europe and shows with the likes of The Soft Moon, Tomaga and Vanishing Twin. Talking about ‘Surrounding Structures’, they say that “The writing of the album was heavily influenced by architectural environments. We made a lot of detours when touring in 2017 and 2018 to visit modernist and brutalist buildings in France, Germany and Belgium (which caused us many delays for soundchecks.)” Listening to the album, it’s quickly clear how the disjointed shapes and abrasive textures of brutalist architecture are manifested in their music. However, they claim that the ‘Surrounding Structures’ of the album’s title are also a reference to both the “physical and social structures that surround us, and how they shape us as individuals and collectives.”

The first posthumous release of a Dave Kusworth album is this limited pressing of 700 copies on Dave’s own imprint label. • Featuring the talents of Dave Twist (Prefects, Hawks, TV Eye, Tenderhooks) and Daryl Bath (Ian Hunter Band) • Includes the single ‘For all the Perfect People.’ Also, the popular love song ballad “Not sent to hurt you.” Jack of Hearts Dave Kusworth was one of England’s forgotten troubadours not unlike Nick Drake in his lifetime a struggling musician ..a dreamer and a romantic but a sensational songwriter . Kusworth was a hero about town (Birmingham) in the late 70’s early 80’s with his band The Hawks & TV Eye and later Rag Dolls before teaming up with ex Swell map Nikki Sudden and forming Jacobites and recording the gloriously shambolic but quintessentially beautiful ‘Robespierre’s Velvet Basement’.. In June, Stockholm’s Adult Oriented Pop (fka AOP) - the psychedelic pop duo formed by Mattias Gustavsson (Dungen, The Hanged Man) and Martin Fogelström - return with their second album ‘06:15 AM’ via Lazy Octopus Records (MANKIND, Holy Now, Mia Maria Johansson etc.). The six months that Martin Fogelström and Mattias Gustavsson spent working on the songs for the second Adult Oriented Pop record were a laid-back time, and it sounds like it, too. ‘06:15 AM’ is a fabulously woozy affair, taking classic seventies influences and imbuing them with their own signature brand of dreamy psych-pop, a sound that previously have won them praise from Brooklyn Vegan, Line of Best Fit and many more.
