Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: David Shaw & Mariah Czap at Yep Roc Records same: Superserve the artists we have the privilege to work with by delivering their music to the world in a way that best represents how they want their music released to the world. Ultimately, we want to connect an artist’s music with those who will be most receptive to it - fans both old and new. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? David: I can’t choose, but perhaps the most important Yep Roc release to me is The Mayflies USA, Summertown. I was visiting Chapel Hill in the late 90s and heard it playing in-store at Monster Records (R.I.P.). I asked the guy behind the counter what it was and he handed me the CD case. I saw it was produced by Chris Stamey (a Winston-Salem, hometown hero of mine), heard that this was shimmering pop, and noticed a little lamb with the words, “Yep Roc Records” under it, along with a Chapel Hill address. I was instantly a fan of the band and the label, and I picked up a copy of the CD (in-store play works). Also, I thought, “Whoever runs this label is not from around here,” as the music was not at all the insular indie rock that was all the rage of locals at the time. I was right. How did you personally get started in the music industry? David Shaw: I started as an intern at Mute Records in New York and then in their LA offices, which at the time, were sublet from the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royale offices. It was an incredible experience, where I learned skills I use to this day. But before I moved to New York, I’d spent a couple of years out of college trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After much soul searching I concluded that I wanted to dedicate my career to using my strategic marketing skills to help foster the careers of musical artists. Mariah Czap: I started as an intern at Yep Roc my Junior year of college. I was the Multimedia Intern, so was primarily focused on creating interview/live performance content when artists would come through the area and editing EPKs for the marketing team to use. After my semester interning with Yep Roc, I moved to Decatur, GA for the summer to work with Paste Magazine as an A/V intern. During my Senior year of college, I came back to Yep Roc to intern with the marketing department and at the end of the semester a project manager role opened at the label. I was hired 5 days after I graduated and have been at Yep Roc ever since! When and where did the label begin? David: The label started in 1997 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? David: The founders of Yep Roc Records, Glenn Dicker and Tor Hansen, are both massive Slim Gaillard fans. Slim was a jazz musician and songwriter, who created his own language called “Vout-o-Reenee,” and he even wrote a dictionary of all of the words. He used these words in many of his songs. One such song is called, “Yip Roc Heresy,” which Tor and Glenn used as the inspiration for the label name. How has the label changed since it started? David: The first few releases by Yep Roc were compilation CDs consisting primarily of regional North Carolina artists like Trailer Bride, Portastatic, Tift Merritt, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Whiskeytown. Since then the label has worked with artists from around the globe and become one of the most respected truly independent labels in the world. Artists that have released music on Yep Roc include Nick Lowe, Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet, Aoife O’Donovan, Scott McCaughey,Chatham County Line, Josh Rouse, John Doe, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchock, Fountains of Wayne, Jim lauderdale, Los Straitjackets, Kim Richey, Eli Paperboy Reed, Dressy Bessy, The Apples in Stereo, Watchouse (formerly Mandolin Orange), Elvis Costello, and the list goes on. The biggest change from the early days is that the label is now global and has the ability to build the careers of new artists, but also maintain momentum of artists that may come to Yep Roc as more established artists. We’ve built a reputation of being extremely artist friendly, and everything we do is driven by what is best for the artist long term. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? David: The biggest challenge has probably been the product delays, especially vinyl. But it’s also been difficult not having artists on the road. It’s what Yep Roc artists do; tour. Live shows not happening over the last couple of years have been pretty devastating from a promotional aspect, and more so from a financial aspect. Artists have taken a serious hit. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Mariah: With our headquarters in Hillsborough, North Carolina, we have a strong connection to the local music scene both in NC and the South in general. From Chatham County Line to Watchhouse to Steep Canyon Rangers, being able to collaborate with the artists making music in our own backyard has always been a foundational part of the label. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? David: While Yep Roc is open to all sorts of music, it has released music in the following genres R&B, Country, Soul, Rock, Power Pop, Rockabilly, Folk, Bluegrass, Alternative, Punk, Indie, Psychedelic. All of those genres could fall under a broader category of Americana Music, as all of those styles are deeply rooted in American music. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? David: As long as I have worked here the overall goals of the label have remained the

How would you describe the average fan of the label? David: The coolest person on earth. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? David: I think it is important to be environmentally sustainable in all aspects of life. But in the music business, as with any business that involves packaged goods, we do need to do better. I’ve always loved the fact that (except for the goofy CD longboxes, and a few other past bad packaging ideas) LPs and CDs have very little “throw-away” packaging. Basically, just shrink wrap and perhaps a sticker or two on that shrink wrap gets tossed after opening the package. However, that’s still a lot of shrink-wrap. And CDs don’t seem to have as long a life as the nearly invincible (if cared for properly) LP, and they are not recyclable. And then there’s the issue of the energy use involved in cloud storage, music streaming servers, smart phones, and everything else used to “consume” music. I love the idea of doing away with shrink wrap and replacing it with some other component that becomes a collectible part of the package. CD wallets have mostly replaced the dreaded jewel case, which is awesome. We are always exploring ways to reduce our waste (we finally stopped making advance CDs a few years ago), but it’s bigger than us. The industry as a whole needs to find solutions to build a more sustainable product life cycle. I don’t have all the answers, unfortunately. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Mariah: Extremely important. As Co-General Managers, David and I are dedicated to creating an environment with the rest of the Yep Roc team that encourages diversity, inclusiveness and empathy. We act openly and transparently with our team and encourage dialogue about different issues our staff might be facing or that are happening in the world around us. Planned Parenthood, Porch, The NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro NAACP are all organizations that are important to the label and we frequently donate to. Personally, I also serve on Redeye’s Diversity and Intersectionality Committee, whose mission is to establish a diverse workforce that supports all traditionally disenfranchised groups and provide educational + training resources to current employees. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? David: Digital. When I started it was all about the CD. I started before ripping a CD was even a thing. Also, the return of the LP. At Alias Records, we made LPs because it was a cool indie rock thing to do, but our bread and butter was CDs. At Nettwerk, we’d make 12” vinyl of remixes to send to DJs/clubs, but those were promo only, for the most part. When I returned to the music business in 2011, after more than a decade away, I felt a bit like Rip Van Winkle. Digital and vinyl were now a thing. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Mariah: It would probably be a dream pop label with an annoyingly punny name - like Cosmic Sans or Explanation Point. David: I’m not sure what I’d call the label, as I have a tendency to overthink stuff like this, but in the end I’d probably settle on a really bad name. It would be geared toward power pop. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Mariah: Oh man, so many to choose from! I love Criminal Records in Atlanta, Harvest Records in Asheville and Grimey’s in Nashville. Some people collect magnets when they travel. I buy vinyl. I’ve also got to give some love to my favorite local record store - Volume in Hillsborough. I love that you can get a beer while you browse. Ideal shopping experience. David: Super tough one, as I love so many stores around the country. But I’m going to go with one that meant a lot to me when I moved from Hollywood to Culver City in the midaughts. SoundSations in Westchester, CA. I’d lived in LA for about 10 years before I knew it existed. It was closer to my house than any of the shops in Hollywood, and it catered to a very local clientele. I found so many great old records in those bins. Very well-curated selection of stuff, primarily from the 60s, 70s and 80s (at that time anyway) for fair prices. I almost regret giving up my honey hole for good finds, but I live in NC now, so whatever!

rag City grandly presents Whirlybird (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring all-new music by Ty Segall, created for Matt Yoka’s compelling new documentary. Released to great acclaim in Summer 2021, Whirlybird tells the story of Zoey Tur and Marika Gerrard, former partners and founders of the Los Angeles News Service, and deftly tracks their extraordinary and often-reckless pursuit of breaking news throughout the 80s and 90s — a time in which they pioneered the use of a helicopter to report on Los Angeles at its most chaotic, capturing historical moments like the 1992 riots and the O.J. Simpson slow speed pursuit. Through striking interviews and one-of-a-kind archival footage,Yoka’s documentary expertly tells the story of Zoey and Marika’s unraveling marriage as they singlehandededly changed broadcast news forever. These two arcs intertwine to create an electric view of the encroaching intensities of that era, when the 24-hour news cycle first rose up to dominate our national consciousness. Ty Segall has previously scored

scenes and interstitial bits for film and video things here and there — but this is his first full-on feature film score, a work done in collaboration with the director, whose friendship and creative partnership with Ty has grown over a decade-plus of music videos and other projects. Working off notes and feels from Matt and responding to the images and story

on screen, Ty crafted some of his most creative arrangements to date, using synth, drum machine, Wurlitzer keyboard, guitars, drums and percussion (plus saxes played by Mikal Cronin, who also cowrote the title track with Ty) to articulate a multitude of tones running through the film. For a shape-shifter like Ty, this apex of tone color is no mean feat, an achievement further highlighted by the full set of pieces. Rather than simply throw a bunch of songs-with-singing at the project, Ty’s score perfectly epitomizes the film’s ethos, providing an instrumental counterpart that dialogues with and helps frame the film’s provocative themes and images. As both Matt and Ty are natives to the Southern Californian milieu, particularly the era Whirlybird depicts, their collaboration involved a journey through their past. In realizing the music, they revisited their own Los Angeles awakenings, adding another personal layer to the deeply felt meditations and elegies sighted by the remarkable Whirlybird — now an equally thrilling counterpart to be experienced through the original soundtrack.

HEART UNDER

Streetdate: 5/27/22

OVERVIEW ‘Heart Under,’ Just Mustard’s second album, asks you to forget what you know. At every turn, this remarkable record reconfigures and stretches the ideas and ambition of a rock band, and turns a year of lockdown and personal struggles into a breathtaking artistic statement. The music the five friends from Dundalk, Ireland make is strikingly untraditional. Though to look at them, it appears that the band are a five-piece with uniform make-up of a vocalist, two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer, not a single one of them utilizes their instrument in a confined or regular fashion. Guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyoncuoglu make their sixstrings shriek and wail, the sounds produced sounding like everything from whirring machinery to horror movie monsters. Behind them, drummer Shane Maguire uses the rim of his drums almost as much as the skins, providing a clattering, metallic backbeat. Most of the melodies on offer poke through from Rob Clarke’s inventive, nodding bass lines. Then there’s Katie on vocals; she’s the transfixing focal point of the band.

SELLING POINTS • The band’s unique sound transcends genre and their immersive and all encompassing live set appeals to fans across rock, dance and noise audiences

Across its 10 tracks, the album presents a coherent style and ethos – those scything guitars, Katie’s magical • They’re playing 26 live shows in the US and Canada vocals – but still incorporates a wide and untethered leading up to the album release, including 20 shows vision. There are brooding, atmospheric rock songs opening for Fontaines D.C. and others that apply a lighter, dreamier touch, all tied together with impeccable instrumentation and a united • Incredible early support from Brooklyn Vegan, Clash, vision. ‘Heart Under’ serves as the next stage of this DIY, Dork, Stereogum, So Young and Under The Radar development, with every instrument brilliantly pushed to its limit and every boundary of the band stretched. • Great playlist support for the single ’Still ’on Spotify; New Music Friday, Apple; New In Rock, Deezer; Brand New, Rough Trade; Counter Culture, NME; Best New FORMATS Tracks and The Line of Best Fit, New Music Discovery Compact Disc UPC: 720841301929 Standard black LP UPC: 720841301912 Standard Color LP UPC: 720841301936

Part of that promise has been made manifest here... Daptone Records is proud to present ALWAYS - the raw, soulful new long player from The Frightnrs. The road to Always began with a period of intense songwriting back when The Frightnrs and producer Victor Axelrod (Ticklah) were working on the group's debut, rocksteady masterpiece, Nothing More to Say. In addition to the scorchers heard therein, Axelrod and The Frightnrs agreed many of the recordings were too sweet to tamper with in order to fit the rocksteady mold. Some were created at their headquarters in Queens with Dan on the mic, some were elaborations on older ideas, others were brand new creations made at the finish line.

TRACKLISTING •

1. ALWAYS 2. 30/56 3. 30/56 (VERSION) 4. TUESDAY 5. MAYBE ISLE 6. YOU STILL 7. PROFILIN’

Thanks to the vocal stems they had captured in this golden period, Dan Kleinʼs other-worldly voice lived on, giving The Frightnrs all the raw material they needed for an entire albumʼs worth of new, original music. So with that, The Frightnrs and Axelrod returned to the studio and painstakingly conceptualized, tracked, re-tracked and mixed them into a complete album with their beloved friend singing lead. The fruits of this arduous process lay bare the undying love and respect between musical brothers.

9. EXPECTATIONS 10. WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE A CURSE

The last song written for this album, "Why Does it Feel Like a Curse", married two song concepts with one of Dan's original vocal performances - creating a beautiful, flawless composition that not only ser ves as a highlight reel of their editing skills and songwriting prowess, but also as a kind of metaphor for The Frightnrs journey. The perfect ending for ALWAYS.

WE ALL KNOW HE’S COMING BACK TO RESCUE US! One of the rarer albums in the Sun Ra canon, RTTR originally entered our orbit in 1983, mystifying listeners and confounding Ra fanatics with the minimal info on the Saturn pressing. Recorded at several locations over several years, the tracks here include everything from Ra’s sci-fi synthesizer insanity, Marshall Allen’s skronking sax, an excellent Arkestra vocal track “They Plan To Leave,” and so much more. Reissued for the first time, and pressed on colored vinyl! When Ra and his business partner Alton Abraham launched their pioneering independent Saturn label in Chicago in the late 1950s, and on thru the 1960s—by which time Ra had moved to New York—each new album was carefully curated, titled, packaged with a printed, illustrated sleeve, and promoted in ads and catalogs. By the 1970s, when Ra and his band were based in Philadelphia, this process had begun to unravel. During that decade and the following one, Ra often issued albums without the involvement of Abraham (who had remained in Chicago). These releases—dozens of titles—were often hastily compiled, thematically mismatched, and issued in generic white sleeves adorned with homemade abstract artwork, glued-on photographs, and adhesive stickers. Thid is the first time Ra to the Rescue has been reissued on LP or CD. Since, the original Saturn pressing had no official album artwork. The cover for this release was adapted from a 1980s hand-designed sleeve laminated with a shower curtain.

COCKROACH IN A GHOST TOWN STREET DATE: MAY 27, 2022 SIDE A 1. Wilder 2. King Gunn 3. Hit The City 4. In Hot Water 5. Time Bomb

SIDE B 6. Wrong Wrong Wrong 7. Chipped Tooth 8. Cockroach In A Ghost Town 9. My #1

• DEBUT ALBUM FOR KILL ROCK STARS FROM THIS PORTLAND SUPER GROUP • FIRST PRESSING ON DEEP PURPLE VINYL

Slang’s debut COCKROACH IN A GHOST TOWN is a force of nature that came, seemingly, out of nowhere. Lyricist/singer/guitarist Drew Grow and drummer/singer Janet Weiss started the band over a decade ago in Portland, OR—both having spent more than half their lives dedicated to making and performing music. Through the years, Weiss has played with everyone from her bands Quasi, Wild Flag, and Sleater-Kinney, to collaborators like Elliott Smith, Stephen Malkmus, and others.; Grow has fronted his own groups Modern Kin and the Pastors’ Wives, producing other bands along the way. Starting as a moonlighting collaboration, the meeting of this particular group was kismet if not totally cosmic. In their first iteration as a duo, Slang hammered the Everly Brothers inside-out; they put a keen new light on songs by the Traveling Wilburys and Jackson C. Frank—setting out to harmonize together and just play. Following a homespun two-song cassette, the band grew to include Kathy Foster (Roseblood, The Thermals) on bass and Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce) on guitar/vocals—with record appearances made by Sam Coomes (Quasi), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag) and others.

CONCERT ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME •2 DISC VINYL SET LIMITED TO 1000 UNITS •RED & BLUE SWIRL VINYL • EACH DISC IS UNIQUE There was no shortage of historic rock music festivals in 1969, from the unforgettable highs of Woodstock to the crashing lows of Altamont and everything in between. Meanwhile, interest was steadily building on another front. A full-fledged 1950s rock and roll revival was brewing, and the idiom’s pioneers were experiencing a renaissance. Suddenly, they were no longer viewed as over-the-hill relics, but still-vital sources of real rock and roll. Combining the two contrasting demographics at one event was a rare sight to behold, but the Toronto Rock’n’Roll Revival 1969, held that September 13 at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, represented that unlikely hybrid. That afternoon the Father Of Rock & Roll returned to lead the apostles of rock into the next decade. After decades of inferior releases, for the first time, this historical concert is presented in it’s entirety. Oneness of Juju - Bush Brothers & Space Rangers Strut continue their deep dive into the archives of Black Fire Records with a new reissue of Oneness Of Juju’s Bush Brothers & Space Rangers, showcasing the band at the peak of their powers in 1977. Oneness had enjoyed two fruitful years with Black Fire prior to these recordings, breaking through with the African Rhythms and Space Jungle Luv albums. “When we recorded African Rhythms we didn’t use a guitar,” explains bandleader Plunky Branch. “So, when vocalist Jackie Eka-Ete and guitarist Ras Mel Glover came in in around ‘75, that moved our sound into a more soulful direction. The drummer on this album, Tony Green, was the drummer with Gil Scott Heron and he added a little more sophistication to our soulfulness. African percussionist Okyerema Asante was also fully incorporated into the band after joining in 1976. By 1977, we were in full production mode recording songs; one or two of the tracks here also feature Brian Jackson, known for his work with Gil.” Primarily recorded at Arrest Studios in Washington DC, the album is packed with landmark Oneness tracks including ‘Be About The Future’ (“possibly the first ecology-themed song that I know of”) the George Clinton-influenced ‘Plastic’, an acoustic alternative version of ‘African Rhythms’ and strong covers of Caiphus Semenya’s ‘West Wind’ and Bobby Womack’s ‘Breezin’’. Plunky continues, “The album is composed of several different sessions featuring different personnel and only first came out as an album in its own right when Black Fire MD Jimmy Gray started working with P-Vine Records in Japan during the ‘90s. For me, it’s one of the hottest periods for the band.”

Tosca - Osam For Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber, the idea of rebirth is a creative driving force – an artistic device which not only informs their work, but anchors it. As the avant-garde electronic group Tosca, the two artists have lived many musical lives, from their early electronic experiments with tape decks to the blissed-out dub compositions with which they have made their name. Their latest project, OSAM, takes this idea of renewal even further. A meditative journey through rhythm and texture, the album represents a new chapter for the Austrian duo. It’s as much an instrument for change as it is a source of inspiration. ‘Osam’ is a direct translation of the number eight in Serbian, but it also acts as the mediaeval symbol for a fresh start – a renaissance. This is their ninth studio album but in true Tosca style when they started working on the concept for the record, they thought it was their eighth.

KEY POINTS This is the 9th studio album by Tosca Their career spans almost 2 decades A solid sales history topping half a million physical copies and 190M streams worldwide Richard Dorfmeister is one half of legendary group Kruder & Dorfmeister, masterminds behind the groundbreaking K&D Sessions Rupert Huber is a celebrated composer and pianist with global exhibitions and showcases to his name including an innovational TEDx performance

Maria Chiara Agirò

Forest City women in jazz and electronic music but back then, it wasn’t the case at all.” She moved to London over a decade ago to immerse herself in the music scene; in Italy, she says, “jazz is still seen as the older generation’s music. I wanted to find my own path.” In London, she studied at the London Centre of Contemporary Music and then took a jazz degree at Middlesex University. The day after her last exam was the day she went on tour with experimental post-punk group These New Puritans. “Then I was locked in a rehearsal space with the guys, it was crazy.” She says the group has hugely informed her own approach to music. “They’re not too worried about being commercial,” she says, “and they mix genres freely.” A show in Los Angeles, when These New Puritans opened for Björk, was a particular highlight – the Icelandic musician is another major influence on Maria. “It’s her artistry that inspires me,” she explains, “how she’s always pushing boundaries, thinking about the details and working with strong collaborators.” Like Björk, she also has a penchant for exploring non-western instruments and she studied djembé, playing in bands led by Senegalese percussionists like Sena M’Baye and Ady Thioune. Maria has released a few solo records before but Forest City feels like the turning of a page. The past 18 months provided the respite that she needed to hone her own sound, as she liberated herself from the structures of jazz on her laptop and adding dense thickets of electronic texture and beats. She recorded and self-produced the album between her bedroom and her studio with the precious help of her longtime collaborators and electronic producers, In a Sleeping Mood and mixing engineer Alex Killpartrick. And, crucially, she is singing for the first time, too – her airy, otherworldly vocals on ‘Blossom’ and ‘Clouds’ especially resemble Emiliana Torrini or a singer in a smoky, late-night club, alone under the spotlight on the stage. Being in lockdown, says Maria, gave her the freedom she needed to explore her voice. “I thought, ‘I’m going to do exactly what I want to do, without boundaries,” she says. With that sort of limitless outlook, who knows what she’ll do next.

"Maria's new album is tremendous... so good, sort of a bit ambient, got the jazz swing, lots of electronics & weirdness & melodic all the way" - Gilles Peterson (BBC6 Music) Maria Chiara Argirò (pronounced ma-REE-ah key-AH-rah r-gee-ROW) has been quietly weaving her way around the UK jazz, classical and electronic worlds since she moved to London from Rome 11 years ago. A pianist from the age of nine and a key player in the capital’s multi-national jazz scene, she’s lent her skills to indie band These New Puritans, lush jazz troupe Kinkajous and, more recently, collaborations with Jamie Leeming – their 2020 album Flow was nominated for one of the albums of the year in the Jazz Revelations Awards and was the Guardian’s jazz album of the month – and beat-driven duo Moonfish. But with her new album, Forest City, she finds a glistening thread between these movements: it marks her out as an exciting rising electronic artist, where jazz meets Kelly Lee Owens, Jon Hopkins and Radiohead. It’s a concept record, about the “duality of nature and city”, and where organic sounds and textures seem to flow above the urban sprawl. Maria had finished writing the album before the first lockdown of 2020 but the enforced isolation helped to give the music a sense of urgency, a longing to be immersed in the natural world and the buzz of the city at the same time. The songs always start as something she can play acoustically, that would work without the bells and whistles, and then she layers the atmosphere around them. “The music needs to stand on its own, a melody has to be strong,” she says. But though the album has dark undertones, it’s not all doom and gloom: in her earthy metropolis, a certain optimism glows through. “It’s about being conscious of the world we live in and how careful we need to be,” Maria explains. “At the end of the day, there is hope”. Opening track ‘Home’ sets up the shadowy textural claustrophobia of the city, its melancholic piano evoking raindrops on crowded pavement; then the album evolves into a mesmeric journey spanning downbeat trip-hop, all skittering drums and warped trumpet (‘Forest City’), dream-like, folkier songwriting (‘Greenarp’, which was named after the arpeggios she created on her beloved Organelle synth), galvanising dance floor heaters (the warm, house-inflected ‘Bonsai’), shoegazey alt-pop, punctured by poignant brass solos (‘Blossom’) and beguiling jazztronica that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Jamie XX set (‘Clouds’). The musician’s biggest influence growing up was her mother, a dance teacher, whose passion for ballet and contemporary dance inspired Maria to start piano lessons when she was a child. But by her early teens she’d discovered jazz “and that became an obsession,” she says. She started listening to the likes of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, then expanded out to Seventies prog (Pink Floyd) and folk (Nick Drake) – sounds which were at odds with the strict classical world. “I wanted to be a rebel,” she says. When she was starting out in Rome, Maria continues, she was one of the very few women in jazz she could think of. “All my life I’ve been surrounded by men,” she says. “But when you’re 15, you don’t really think about being the only woman. Now I see many more

"The new song is a clubby departure for Argirò, trading in clever chord changes for a hypnotic beat and swelling synth pads." - FADER "Heady, other-worldly stuff... The electronic musician's genre-less approach moves from club tropes to jazz improvisation, finding a natural way to let these twin poles coalesce." - CLASH

THE ORANGE PEELS CELEBRATE THE MOMENTS OF YOUR LIFE DOUBLE CD + BONUS TRACKS: “17 songs that push and pull on the boundaries of a pop song.” While some artists hunkered down to craft intimate acoustic albums over the past two years, members of The Orange Peels blew up their sound with a huge, sweeping statement—a double album that stretches out across stately psychedelia, 80s melancholia, and electronic experimentation. As if to say, “if we’re going out, we’re not going out with a whimper,” the band literally doubled down with more than an hour of new music that American Songwriter says ”pushes and pulls at the boundaries of a pop song.” All Music calls it a masterpiece, giving it four and a half stars. Featuring lush string arrangements from New York composer Mike Brown, the minor-key hit “Give My Regards to Rufus” made multiple Apple Music editorial playlists and garnered indie and commercial airplay. It’s a tribute to songwriter Allen Clapp’s father, who passed away during the making of the album. Multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Gabriel Coan shines here, delivering enormous rhythm sections—sometimes just a single, propulsive drum take; sometimes layering multiple kits against multiple drum machines and electronic treatments (“Larkitekture,” “Birds are Louder,” “Pastels”) and locking in with bassist Jill Pries to lend the compositions a dystopian, mechanical, party vibe. The band’s move to becoming a trio just before the onset of the pandemic gave the Peels the freedom to stretch and experiment while bringing an expanded sense of detail. Mixed by Minneapolis producer Bryan Hanna, mastered by Dave Gardner at Infrasonic, and lacquer-cut by Dietrich Schoenemann, this double vinyl set is the ultimate expression of the band’s song and sound craft.

here are countless intimate, fret-noise-filled records from singerguitarists across the history of modern popular music, but solo piano and voice releases remain a comparative rarity. It’s hard to imagine an artist better equipped to contribute to this canon than France-based singer, keyboardist, and composer Melissa Weikart. A conservatory-trained classical pianist and improviser, Weikart’s accompaniment on her debut album, Here, There, swells to catharses of orchestral proportions; it’s usually easy to forget this is the work of just one player. Here, adding additional instruments also might obscure some of this bold and playful record’s most compelling interplay: the way Weikart’s hands frequently seem to move out of correspondence with each other, reaching for conflicting rhythms and key areas. Gestures like these carefully underscore the Boston-reared singer-songwriter’s fraught reflections on devotion, obsession, and doubt, delivered naturalistically and matter-of-factly despite the complexity of the musical setting. Her piano parts lurch forward and get caught in dizzying loops as her narrators drift ahead of and behind themselves in moments of psychological crisis. She uses heavy chromaticism to dramatize their uneasy reflections, recalling the word painting of musical theater composers like Stephen Sondheim or luminaries of 20th-century classical art song: French composers (Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc) or, at more acerbic moments, American avant-gardists like Charles Ives.

700 Bliss is the forward-thinking duo of DJ Haram and Moor Mother. Their first full length for Hyperdub is an album of noise rap that ties together the raw edges of club music and hip hop with punk energy, jazz, house-party catharsis, percussion-heavy analogue sound design, and cheeky skits, ranging from experimental rap tracks with rolling hi hats and lyrical bravado, to poetry set to noise and sound collage. Moor Mother and DJ Haram started collaborating in 2014 and eventually formed 700 Bliss, a blistering live act in Philly's DIY scene, releasing their 2018 debut, Spa 700 on Halcyon Veil / Don Giovanni Records. Since that time, both artists have grown global followings. Moor Mother is a prolific solo artist and collaborator, writer, and member of Black Quantum Futurism while Haram has been curating and creating radio shows, DJing, and producing (including an EP for Hyperdub in 2019). ‘Nothing To Declare’ is a smart, danceable revelation, a chiseled soundscape of dive bombing bass, piercing bleeps, crunchy distortion, and wavering synth lines. Welcoming in a variety of voices from their extended, cross-genre scene, 700 Bliss also bring along a cast of collaborators, including vocalists Orion Sun, Lawfandah, Ase Manual, and Ali Logout (from the band Special Interest), plus Palestinian producer Muqata'a, and writer M Téllez who delivers a surreal sci fi monologue over a pounding kick drum on ‘More Victories’. ‘Nothing To Declare’ is a deeply layered rewriting of hip hop and electronic music that gives more with each listen. You won't hear another rap album like it in 2022.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX HAUSUMOUNTAIN @GMAIL.COM

Composer / saxophonist / multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bernstein has been an essential part of the Baltimore experimental music scene as a member of avant-rock champions Horse Lords, a frequent collaborator with acts like Dan Deacon and Matmos, and an erstwhile member of the High Zero Collective – Baltimore’s premier experimental music presenter. Based in Baltimore for much of the last two decades, he currently resides with his family in Germany. Under his own name, Bernstein composes music focused on the material of sound, typically oriented around the tuning system of just intonation: the selection of notes based on the physical properties of sound which yield s frequencies that provide more “perfect” harmonies outside of the capabilities of the 12-tone scales that appear in Western music in idioms ranging from classical / orchestral composition, to mainstream pop, and most everything in between. Bernstein’s work can swell into ights of virtuosic sheets-of-sound overload or stretch individual tones into time-dilating durational exercises that emphasize the relationships between overtones and explore the unique harmonic series that he lays out for each piece. Following his past releases on Hausu Mountain — Cult Appeal and An Exploded View of Time — Bernstein returns to the label with a new album called a presentation. Sweet Pill - Where the Heart Is Hle under: emo indie rock pop pop punk punk rock

Info: Philadelphia’s Sweet Pill write eruptive emo songs that embrace the edges of pop and hardcore. The kind of band whose members are fully immersed in their local scene—through a handful of notable side projects and the show-promoting Philly staple 4333 Collective—the quintet’s sound takes wide-spectrum inIuence from its environment. The result is an amalgam of complex song structures and Iourishes of technical acumen, wholly unconcerned with genre, yet evoking the speciHc styles of touchstones such as Paramore and Circa Survive. On their debut longplayer Where the Heart Is, Sweet Pill’s unbound, raucous energy presents through ten autobiographical tracks that hinge on singer Zayna Youssef’s elastic, enrapturing voice—at times belting and controlled, at others textural and guttural. Supporting Youssef are guitarists Jayce Williams and Sean McCall, bassist Ryan Cullen, and drummer Chris Kearney. Their blistering lead single “Blood” sees Youssef exploring a deteriorated friendship over Williams and McCall’s trudging riffs and tactful counterpoint, with Cullen and Kearney rumbling nimbly in the song’s foundations.

Track List: 1. Where the Heart Is 2. Blood 3. High Hopes 4. Dog Song 5. Sucker Punch 6. Sometimes 7. Diamond Eyes 8. Fate 9. Red String 10. Cut

Second single “High Hopes” counters with introspective, melodic punk that reshapes anxiety rather than succumb to it. But third single “Diamond Eyes” momentarily slows the pace, with McCall joining Youssef on vocals for a breakup lament laden with acoustic sentimentalism and an emotive Iurry from guest Iutist Jill Ryan. Such range is the central facet of Where the Heart Is, where Sweet Pill’s penchant for combining punkish tropes enlivened with the vibrance of math-rock and the aggression of post-hardcore sweetened with pop sensibility compound into something stylistically new yet still familiar.

Radio Stars

Broadcasting to the Nation (The lost third album) Easy Action CD

EARS179

Andy Ellison - vox. Ian Macleod - Gtr. Steve Parry - drums. Trevor White - Bass. Recorded at Oakwood Studios Herne Bay, Kent 1979. With Lead Singer Andy Ellison’s autobiography due, profile is high on bands such as John’s Children & Radio Stars – This being the unreleased third album recorded back in 1979 and the tapes only recently having been recovered. With the loss of founder, songwriter and ex Sparks guitarist Martin Gordon, Radio Stars developed a brand-new heavier sound. This was met with positive feedback from the press at live shows throughout 1979. A Live concert recorded in London from that time has been added as bonus material . Booklet includes notes from Ellison and memorabilia from the time. Captures perfectly the direction in which Radio Stars were now moving, a hard rocking mood that, with ex-Sparks guitarist Trevor White playing rhythm on his bass, bore more than a passing resemblance to vintage Thin Lizzy. They were also a far more honest effort than if the band had tried to continue writing Martin Gordon-type songs, a fact which audiences were not slow to appreciate, and applaud. Sadly, however, it was not to last - as he wrote in “Out to Lunch,” Ellison found that “just when you think you’ve got it made, they come and take it all away.” With the dawning of the summer of 1979, came the demise of Radio Stars, and the shelving of the album. From 1978 to 1980, Fashion released one album and a handful of indie club hit singles mixing punk & reggae vibes. Limited Edition of 800 copies 2LP set with printed inner bags. All tracks completely remastered. Contains every studio recording of the first lineup of Fashion including US singles and unreleased tracks. Liner notes from lead singer/guitarist Luke Sky.. Fàshiön Music was formed originally in Birmingham, England, in 1978, when they also founded their own Fàshiön Music label; from this point forward, the band was generally (though not completely consistently) identified as Fashion, as distinct from the name of their self-owned label. Fashion released their first two singles ("Steady Eddie Steady" and "Citinite") as independent issues on the UK in November 1978 and June 1979 respectively. The group was quickly picked up by I.R.S., who put out a third single in the US in September 1979, "The Innocent". Their sound was varied, playing punk, post-punk and indie repertoire, although Mulligan at that time also had a synthesizer which later characterized the future synthpop years of the band. Still signed to I.R.S., in 1979 they recorded and released their first album, Product Perfect. All three members were credited as having written the songs collectively. They toured the UK with U2, both the UK and US with The Police, and opened for The B-52's on their first British tour. In March 1980, no longer associated with I.R.S., Fashion released their "Silver Blades" single, again on their own Fàshiön Music label. Later in 1980 they also released one more song, "Let Go", on a Birmingham bands compilation called Bouncing in the Red (EMI). In June 1980, after a last gig in London with U2, Luke James left the band.

MJ Lenderman Boat Songs

STREET DATE May 27, 2022

CATALOG # DLR-031

Jake Lenderman lives in Asheville, North Carolina. He plays guitar in the indie band Wednesday and creates his own music as MJ Lenderman. His latest solo release with Dear Life Records is titled Boat Songs. Lenderman describes the album as his most “polished” sound to date, built around songs that “chase fulfillment and happiness”—whether that means buying a boat, drinking too mu much, or watching seeds fall from the bird feeder. Boat Songs is the followup to Lendermanʼs 2020 label debut, Ghost of Your Guitar Solo, and subsequent release, Knockinʼ, with Dear Life Records, both of which were critically acclaimed for their off-the-cuff alternative country sound. But with Boat Songs, Lenderman emerges confident as ever, an innovative voice impossible to ignore.

Recorded at Ashevilleʼs Drop of Sun, Boat Songs is the first album Lenderman made in a professional studio. WWE matches and basketball games were silently projected on the studio walls during recording sessions. And you can hear their power in these ten unapologetically lo-fi tracks, each brimming with pent-up energy and the element of surprise. But no matter where Boat Songs goes sonically, the album is deeply rooted in Lendermanʼs gifts as a storyteller. Filled with everyday observations ripped straight from his journal, Lendermanʼs lyrics are sincere in their absurdities, with the vulnerability and honesty of Jason Molina and Daniel Johnston. Simply said, these songs are straightforward and unforgettable. They make you feel alive.

Moundabout is the new folk project of Paddy Shine of GNOD, recorded with Phil Masterson in Ireland, but the words ‘new’ and ‘folk’ need to be treated with care here. Some of the most striking ancient structures in Ireland are the neolithic “passage tombs” constructed between five and six thousand years ago, of which one of the most interesting of is Knowth at Brú na Bóinne. Kerbstones and pillars are carved with a hypnotising array of spiral, serpentiform and lozenge-shaped patterns. Listening to Flowers Rot, Bring Me Stones is like entering a trance state while staring at one of the Knowth spiral carvings. Like following a ridged epidermal loop inwards, tracing the spiral of an ammonite towards the centre, immersion in this great album sees you travelling both temporally backwards and spatially inwards simultaneously. The listener is invited to see folk as a glowing helix of a continuum stretching way back to an eternal vibrancy that predates classical antiquity and Irish civilisation itself. As the album moves the listener, they are taken on a geographical and geological journey as well as psychological and spiritual, traveling inwards from the coast (‘The Sea’), as well as down beneath the strata (“How many bog bodies are waiting to be found?”) And when you have been primed, they take you all the way back to commune with older gods on the album’s epic centrepiece, ‘Dick Dalys Dance’, creating the kind of prehistoric drones and trance-inducing rhythms that the echoing, celestially aligned corridors of the Brú na Bóinne were built to amplify. This is not new music but the deep sensations it provokes will be new to most listeners. 01. The Sea 02. Bog Bodies 03. Waste Of Peace 04. Lonely 05. Bring My Stones 06. Dick Dalys Dance 07. Label: PLZ Make It Ruins Street date: May 27th 2022 UPC: 5060263728023 Format: Limited edition pink vinyl Cat no: PLZ041

Listening to the dissonant, hallucinogenic world of pigbaby feels like sinking deeper into the artist’s subconscious. His introspective bedroom folk draws together the most surreal of reference points – from from Sinead O’Connor playing the Virgin Mary in Irish film “The Butcher Boy”, to the online reality game Second Life, to random YouTube videos of people fighting – to imply a doomscrolling, daydreaming mind. Pieced together on a small keyboard during a period of intense isolation, pigbaby has formed a picture of digital chaos, longing, and loneliness on his debut EP Palindromes. The artist behind pigbaby grew up in Ireland, where he spent a lot of time in a record shop in Dublin. His earliest musical education came from listening to his grandad playing the mandolin as he sat on his knee, or his mum blasting Thin Lizzy. The musical loves that can most clearly be heard in his own songs are Daniel Johnston and Jim O’Rourke – experimental, ambient singer-songwriters who deal in rough-edged truth-telling. In crafting these off-kilter musical collages, pigbaby called in friends and asked them to add saxophone, piano, some Irish folk-indebted violin, and a Swarsangam, layering these diverse sounds with scraps of internet ephemera and his own field recordings. The finished EP caught the attention of Joe Thornalley, aka Vegyn, who leapt to release them on PLZ Make It Ruins. “The late 60s in Brasil produced an explosion of creativity that is still reverberating throughout the world... and Os Mutantes (The Mutants) were the most outrageous band of that period. Their creative cannibalism produced psychedelic gems unlike anything else, and they sound as relevant today as anything happening anywhere. They were exactly what their name implies—a mutant genetic recombination of John Cage, The Beatles, and bossa nova. A creature that was too strange and beautiful to live for very long, but too strong to ever fade away. It lives again. Be prepared.” - David Byrne, 1999 The reason that you probably even know Os Mutantes is because of this album. Back in 1999 when David Byrne originally compiled this retrospective—making it the first in our critically acclaimed World Psychedelic Classics series—the idea of doing a psychedelic album from outside the U.S. or Europe was a total surprise. And, importantly, it introduced Mutantes to the world.

More than twenty years since this anthology first hit the shelves, the mutants are back— with their electric guitars, cans of bug spray, and deviant, freaky psychedelia.

POP ALIENS

MUTANTES: of "Baby" (with Rita’s cool vocals) were actually recorded in France a year earlier. In reality, both belong to an album aimed at the international market recorded by request for PolyGram UK. Technicolor (the album’s intended title) was recorded in Paris while the group was performing at L’Olympia Theater, but it was never released. It included English versions of some of the group’s major hits along with four new songs; "El Justiciero" was one of them. "Cantor De Mambo," from the 1972 Mutantes e Seus Cometas no País do Baurets album, is another of the band’s irreverent incursions into Latin rhythms. On this track, Santana’s Latin rock is openly copied, and the ironic lyrics in the language they called "Portunhol" (a crazy combination of Portuguese and Spanish) depict a successful mambo singer living in the USA (the character was inspired by famed pianist Sérgio Mendes).

Baby (1971)

The fifth Mutantes album was the first sign of a radical turn in the band’s trajectory. After Rita Lee’s departure from the group at the end of 1972, the band immersed themselves in progressive rock. Through several lineups, the band recorded three more albums before finally dissolving in 1978. At that point, with only Sérgio remaining from the original group, the band was a mere shadow of its former self. Luckily, in this compilation you will only hear the Mutantes at the best and most humorous phases of their career—a surprisingly creative rock band that even in the 90’s counts among its fans bands such as L7, Redd Kross, the Posies, Stereolab and Kurt Cobain. You will certainly become one, too. Essay by Carlos Calado, author of the book A Divina Comédia Dos Mutantes Translated by Béco Dranoff

ANDO MEIO DESLIGADO

It was the perfect band name.

(Arnaldo Baptista/Rita Lee/Sérgio Dias) Ando meio desligado Eu nem sinto meus pés no chão Olho e não vejo nada Eu só penso se você me quer

In the late 60’s, in a convoluted South American country called Brazil, people asked of Brazil’s northwest—which wasn’t really a favorite of the Mutantes. Before their ties to themselves if these three lunatics hadn’t really come from another planet. Besides the Tropicalistas, the three Mutants made fun of any typically Brazilian rhythm. the bizarre characters that Rita Lee and brothers Sérgio and Arnaldo Baptista would From their first album, the Mutantes had an edge on every other pop band of the impersonate on TV programs, concerts and on their album covers, the Mutantes’ music period— the instruments and electronic effects created by Cláudio César, the eldest sounded light-years ahead of any other pop band in Brazil. Baptista brother. The guitar lends some strange, distorted colors to the percussive “Bat From the very beginning the Mutantes were strange and provocative. While recording the first Macumba” as well as the samba-rock “A Minha Menina,” thanks to the inventions and album, Os Mutantes, in the early part of 1968, producer Manoel Barenbein became extremely experiments of “the fourth Mutante” (as he was sometimes called). curious when he saw Rita walk into the studio holding a can of bug spray (the popular “Flit” Even stranger is the effect used on the dark “Dia 36,” from the band’s second album brand) and place it among the band’s instruments. Craziness? No, just simply brilliant: The Mutantes, recorded at the end of 1968. Cláudio Cesar inverted the sound of the wah-wah idea was to substitute it for the hi-hat cymbals on the recording of “Le Premier Bonheur Du pedal popularized by Jimi Hendrix to create the bizarre “wooh-whooh” pedal. With this Jour.” As unthinkable as it may seem, it worked very well. This was just the first in a series of feature, Sérgio’s guitar sounded like it was about to throw up. From the same album, the strange inventions that the band developed in the studio amid giggles and big guffaws. delicate “Fuga No II,” with its string and horn arrangements, suggests that the Beatles’ Rita Lee Jones and Arnaldo Baptista met when they were 16. The encounter happened in influence over the trio was still strong. 1964 at a high school band contest in São Paulo, where they were both born and raised. Rita By 1969, when the band’s third album (A Divina Comédia ou Ando Meio Desligado) (who comes from a line of Italians and Americans from the South that immigrated to Brazil was recorded, Brazil’s political and cultural situation was already very different. The after the Civil War) was a member of the Teenage Singers, an all-female vocal group that governmental measure known as AI 5 (Institutional Act 5) terrorized intellectuals and covered The Shirelles and Peter, Paul & Mary songs along with several Beatles’ hits. Arnaldo was the bass player in the Wooden Faces, a band that started out cloning the instrumental rock political activists, closing the congress and provoking countless arrests. The Tropicália movement was aborted, with little more than one year of activity. Caetano and Gil were of the Ventures, but which soon converted to Beatlesque pop. arrested and exiled in London. From then on, Arnaldo and Rita would not be apart. Two years later, after stints in the Six Sided Rockers and O’Seis, they decided to form a new group with Arnaldo’s younger brother Sérgio, who Isolated, without the support and creative exchange of Tropicália’s heyday, the Mutantes was already a great guitar player for all of his 15 years of age. They still emulated the Beatles, but renewed their bonds to Anglo-American rock. Dinho’s drums and Liminha’s bass were added to the trio, allowing Arnaldo to play keyboards full time. Rita Lee also added a Mini the trio started to write their own songs. The official Mutantes debut was on October 15th, 1966, Moog and a Mellotron. on a youth-oriented TV show hosted by singer Ronnie Von, the trio’s godfather.

“Cantor De Mambo,” from the 1972 Mutantes e Seus Cometas no País do Baurets album, is another of the band’s irreverent incursions into Latin rhythms. On this track, Santana’s Latin rock is openly copied, and the ironic lyrics in the language they called “Portunhol”

In a matter of weeks the three Mutantes, along with other musicians, poets, and artists, were taking part in lively meetings that quickly evolved into an art movement. With hefty

Included in the 1971 album Jardim Elétrico, the debauched “El Justiciero” and a new version of “Baby” (with Rita’s cool vocals) were actually recorded in France a year earlier. In reality, both belong to an album aimed at the international market recorded by request for PolyGram UK. Technicolor (the album’s intended title) was recorded in Paris while the group was performing at L’Olympia Theater, but it was never released. It included English versions of some of the group’s major hits along with four new songs; “El Justiciero” was one of them.

The impact was tremendous. Along with singer/songwriter Caetano Veloso (also in the race with his innovative song “Alegria, Alegria”), Gil and the Mutantes were the festival’s most polemical figures. The fact that both used electric guitars—a first at an event traditionally dedicated to Brazilian popular music—shocked and irritated the leftist university crowd. Booed and sworn at, the Mutantes, Gil and Caetano were labeled as “alienated” and accused of having sold themselves to North American imperialists.

Written in early 1969 under the effects of marijuana, the song “Ando Meio Desligado” became the group’s greatest hit. Atop a bass line inspired by the Zombies hit “Time Of The Season,” the song’s lyrics combined love with a candid description of the herb’s hallucinogenic effects. From the same album, “Desculpe, Babe” brings us yet another homemade effect: Sérgio’s voice was distorted through a rubber hose connected to a hot chocolate can with a tiny speaker inside. This ingenious thing was later baptized the Voice Box.

Meanwhile, the public at large would only meet the Mutantes a year later. Discovered by Maestro Rogério Duprat (an irreverent follower of John Cage’s avant-garde ideas), the trio was introduced to singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil, who was getting ready to present his new song “Domingo no Parque” at TV Records’ 2nd Festival of Brazilian Popular Music (a fiercely competitive song contest that brought together the country’s best singers and songwriters) in October of 1967.

Eu nem vejo a hora de lhe dizer Aquilo tudo que eu decorei E depois do beijo que eu já sonhei Você vai sentir mas por favor Não leve a mal

Come, my love A paradise In a friendly embrace Will smile upon us; none will see Promise me My tender love Sweet like a nectar-filled flower To intoxicating you, while no one sees us

But, bring Lucifer On a tray for me

Eu só quero Que você me queira Não leve a mal

(Caetano Veloso/version: Os Mutantes) You know, you must take a new look at the new land The swimming pool and the teeth of your friend The dirt in my hand You know, you must take a look at me Baby, baby I know that’s the way You know, you must try the new ice-cream flavor Do me a favor, look at me closer Join us and go far And hear the new sound of my bossa nova Baby, baby It’s been a long time You know, it’s time now to learn Portuguese It’s time now to learn what I know And what I don’t know I know, with me everything is fine It’s time now to make up your mind We live in the biggest city of South America Look here, read what I wrote on my shirt: Baby, baby I love you

FUGA NO II

(Arnaldo Baptista/Rita Lee/Sérgio Dias) Hoje eu vou fugir de casa Vou levar a mala cheia de ilusão Vou deixar alguma coisa velha Esparramada toda pelo chão Vou correr no automóvel enorme e forte A sorte a morte a esperar Vultos altos e baixos Que me assustavam só em olhar

Bring black grapes Parties and flowers Bring chalices and pains Bring fragrant incenses

(Johnny Dandurand/Os Mutantes)

ANDO MEIO DESLIGADO (I FEEL A LITTLE SPACED OUT) Lately, I feel a little spaced out Can’t even feel my feet on the ground I look and see nothing Can only think of whether you care Can’t wait to tell you Words I’ve learned by heart And after the kiss I’ve dreamt about You’ll regret it, but please Don’t take it the wrong way I just want You to love me Don’t take it the wrong way

Penelope Lowenstein (guitar, vocals), Nora Cheng (guitar, vocals), and Gigi Reece (drums) do everything collectively, from songwriting to trading vocal duties and swapping instruments to sound and visual art design. “We made [this album] knowing so fully what we were trying to do,” the band says. “We would never pursue something if one person wasn’t feeling good about it. But also, if someone thought something was good, chances are we all thought it was good.” Versions of Modern Performance was recorded with John Agnello (Kurt Vile, The Breeders, Dinosaur Jr.) at Electrical Audio. “It’s our debut bare-bones album in a Chicago institution with a producer who we feel like really respected what we were trying to do,” the band says. Horsegirl expertly play with texture, shape, and shade across the record, showcasing their fondness for improvisation and experimentation. Opener “Antiglory” is elastic and bright post-punk, while the guitars in instrumental interlude “Bog Bog 1” smear across the song’s canvas like watercolors. “Dirtbag Transformation (Still Dirty)” and “World of Pots and Pans” have rough, blown-out pop charm. “The Fall of Horsegirl” is all sharp edges and dark corners.

NO WOW (THE TCHAD BLAKE MIX 2022) OVERVIEW On their seminal second album No Wow, The Kills established the ethos that would set the tone for their expansive career - capture the rawest emotions and sounds, and then push them to the furthest possible edge. The band is celebrating No Wow’s 15 year anniversary, reissuing the original album and a fresh new mix by the multiple Grammy Award-winning Tchad Blake (The Black Keys, Fiona Apple, Arctic Monkeys) that brings new life to the 11 vivid tracks.

TRACKLISTING 1. No Wow (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 2. Telephone Radio Germany (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 3. Love Is A Deserter (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 4. Dead Road 7 (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 5. The Good Ones (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 6. I Hate The Way You Love (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 7. I Hate The Way You Love Pt. 2 (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 8. At The Back Of The Shell (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 9. Sweet Cloud (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 10. Rodeo Town (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 11. Murdermile (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022) 12. Ticket Man (The Tchad Blake Mix 2022)

Since No Wow’s release, The Kills have established themselves as one of the world’s preeminent rock bands. Their subsequent LPs - 2008’s Midnight Boom, 2011’s Blood Pressures and 2016’s Ash & Ice - have consistently charted on the US Billboard 200, and their songs have appeared in everything from TV’s Gossip Girl and T rue Blood to films as disparate as Children of Men and The House Bunny. A younger generation of indie bands like The xx count The Kills as major influences and Rolling Stone crowned Jamie Hince “one of his generation’s most distinctive guitarists.” Alison Mosshart, for her part, has become a hallowed rock-and-roll idol, with NME calling her “mesmerisingly worthy of a place among history’s truly iconic frontwomen.” She went on to form the rock outfit The Dead Weather with Jack White and collaborate with Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, and Foo Fighters, but has always returned to her partnership with Hince. Two decades into their career, The Kills continue to find ways to refresh and reset their music, and No Wow can be seen as the moment when they emerged as fearless experimentalists. After the furious energy and breakneck speed that went into the record, their vibe remained ultra-positive, their relationship as complicated and mysterious as ever, their shared vision undimmed.

ARTIST: ROLAND KIRK TITLE: HERE COMES THE WHISTLEMAN ORANGE VINYL LP BOX LOT QUANTITY: 30 LP FILE UNDER: JAZZ MH-8261 UPC: 090771826114

Here Comes the Whistleman showcases Rahsaan Roland Kirk in 1967 with a fine band, live in front of a host of invited guests at Atlantic Studios in New York. His band for the occasion is stellar: Jacki Byard or Lonnie Smith on piano, Major Holley on bass, Lonnie Smith on piano, and Charles Crosby on drums. This is the hard, jump blues and deep R&B Roland Kirk band, and from the git, on "Roots," they show why. Kirk comes screaming out of the gate following a double time I-IV-V progression, with Holley punching the accents along the bottom and Byard shoving the hard tight chords up against Kirk's three-horn lead. The extended harmony Kirk plays -though the melody line is a bar walking honk -- is extreme, full of piss and vinegar. On the title track, along with the artist's requisite, and genuinely good, humor, Kirk breaks out the whistles on top of the horn for a blues stomp with Smith taking over the piano chores. Smith plays a two chord vamp, changing the accent before he begins to break it open into a blues with skittering fills and turnarounds while Kirk blows circularly for 12 and 14 bars at a time. Byard returns for a tender and stirring duet rendition of "I Wished on the Moon," with his own glorious rich lyricism. And here is where Kirk displays the true measure of his ability as a saxophonist. Turning the ballad inside out, every which way without overstating the notes. Here, Ben Webster meets Coleman Hawkins in pure lyric ecstasy. The set officially ends with the wailing flute and sax jam "Aluminum Baby," (both courtesy of the irrepressible Kirk) and the bizarre ride of "Step Right Up" where Kirk sings scat in a dialect that sounds like Pop-eye. ARTIST: RAHSAAN ROLAND KIRK TITLE: BLACKNUSS BLACK VINYL LP BOX LOT QUANTITY: 30 LP FILE UNDER: JAZZ MH-8262 UPC: 090771826213

50TH ANNIVERSARY! “Next time you’re throwing a party, forget about that fluffy little acid jazz record and put this on instead, “Blacknuss” would make a great soundtrack to a party about to teeter out of control.”

With Blacknuss, it’s as if Kirk is taking listeners on a trip – from the top forty world of Soul Train to the roots of soul in gospel music and back in Africa. It is a remarkable musical-cultural shift in perspective and one that carries the listener with it. Exploding with near chaotic energy, this album makes a great soundtrack to a party about to teeter out of control. Cut all analog! Dreams run threadlike through the life and mythology of Roland Kirk. In one dream, The Creator spoke to him and told him his name was Rahsaan. In another, he saw himself playing two saxophones at once. Kirk used to say that his religion was the “religion of dreams.” Blacknuss was his eighth album for Atlantic and eighth with Joel Dorn producing. It is best read as Kirk’s soul album, as a tribute to the continuity of African-American music in all its forms. On the record, Kirk stays very much within the original arrangements of the tunes he covers by Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Temptations, Jackson 5 and others, bearing comparison with the music that King Curtis was also making for Atlantic around this point.

ALAN VEGA: Saturn Strip

(Highlighter Yellow Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JUNE 3, 2022 Alan Vega’s work with Suicide is revered by just about every electronic music artist who’s tapped a keyboard or moved a mouse; his snarling, rockabilly-styled vocals teamed with Martin Rev’s ominous, repetitive soundscapes blazed a trail for post-punk, synth pop, industrial rock, techno…the list goes on. Vega’s solo career substantially overlapped with his Suicide recordings; this 1983 release, his first for a major label (Elektra), was his bid for commercial success, enlisting Ric Ocasek of the Cars (who had produced the second Suicide record) to produce and recruiting a young Al Jourgenson (who had just founded Ministry) to play keyboards. Vega even trimmed down his notoriously long songs…however, his art still proved too idiosyncratic for mainstream success. But even if it didn’t result in sales, the relatively accessible sound of Saturn Strip ended up garnering much critical acclaim; this is Vega’s best solo album, highlighted by “Kid Congo,” his tribute to Cramps/Gun Club guitarist Kid Congo Powers, and a cover of the disco hit “Every 1’s a Winner” that sounds like White Light White Heat-era Velvet Underground. STREET DATE: JUNE 3, 2022

The only conceivable reason this 1973 album isn’t generally recognized as a soul-funk classic is because it came out on Bernard Purdie’s Encounter label, which mustered only five LP releases before it folded. Not only does East Coast boast the inimitable vocal stylings of the great Gwen Guthrie (only her second appearance on record), but it also features the recording debuts of two Cameo stalwarts, keyboardist Gregory Johnson and bandleader Larry Blackmon! Right from the opening track, “I Found You,” a frenzied funk number featuring call-and-response duels between Guthrie’s vocals, fuzz guitar, and a somersaulting horn section, this record cooks, and its stylistic range is breathtaking, veering from the sunshine soul of “Something Deep Inside” to the psychedelic dirge-rock of “You Can’t Let It Get You Down.” Remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner of Sonic Vision for its first-ever LP reissue, East Coast comes with its original gatefold jacket art housing a fire orange with black streaks pressing that’s every bit as hot as it looks. (Limited Barbecue Sauce Red Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JUNE 3, 2022 Scandalously scarce Southern soul, originally released on the extremely rare R&R label back in 1976 and currently selling for hundreds of dollars! Shackin’ Up was the only LP released by well-traveled soul man Chuck Armstrong, who also recorded for such imprints as Nashville’s Sound Stage 7, Detroit’s Black Rock, and Miami’s Drive, and it’s simply an amazing one-off, with production by the great George Kerr (Whatnauts, Linda Jones, Manhattans, Phyllis Hyman) and a brace of strong songs headlined by the single “Give Me All Your Sweet Lovin’.” And while most of the album is sweet ‘n’ spicy Southern soul, special mention must be made of the song “You’ve Got to Deal with It (This Superworld),” a tantalizingly powerful, seven minute-long, socially conscious soul epic that suggests Armstrong could have followed the politically aware path to stardom trod by Marvin Gaye, The O’Jays, and Curtis Mayfield. Another insanely rare and highly coveted soul-funk gem from the tiny Maple label, which was part of Sylvia Robinson’s All Platinum empire, and punched way above its weight when it came to ‘70s R&B. Brantley is again behind the board for this 1971 one-off, which was led by drummer/ singer/arranger Brad “Mabu” Young; it’s full of funky surprises, not the least of which is the horn section playing “Sparks” from The Who’s Tommy during “Do the Best You Can!” M-Square sells for hundreds of dollars if you can find it, but you probably can’t; our first-ever LP reissue—remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision—comes in a fire orange with black streaks pressing limited to 1400 copies!

But disc two offers one of those sublime, seamless (and, in this case, never to be repeated) sequences of songs that only the Dead could pull off in concert; after the rarely-performed “Sunrise,” a medley of “Estimated Prophet”/”Eyes of the World”/”Wharf Rat”/”Terrapin Station” (a truncated version two months before its official release)/”Morning Dew” brings the show home, as Jerry Garcia’s soloing on “Morning Dew” reaches heights seldom attained even by him. A knockout release, long out of print.

Combining the second sets of two different nights is not standard operating procedure for the Dick’s Picks series of live Dead shows, but this volume is the exception that proves the rule—the playing is so extraordinary, and the repertoire so unusual, that one can understand why Dick Latvala played more curator than archivist on Vol. 12. The first disc picks up the second set from Providence three songs in, featuring a short jam that leads into what many have labeled the most extraordinary live version of “China Cat Sunflower” ever recorded, complete with a sublime transition (“Mud Love Buddy Jam” a.k.a. “Mind Left Body Jam”) into “I Know You Rider.” The revelatory moments continue throughout the Providence set, highlighted by a dazzling, 15-minute “Spanish Jam.” But the second set of the Boston show—which appears here complete, beginning on CD two after a superb encore performance of “Eyes of the World” from Providence— is the one that has passed into legend among Dead fans (that it begins with a rare performance of Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin’s electronic music piece “Seastones” gives you an idea of what an adventurous night this was). The set boasts one of the most renowned live jams of the band’s career, a flawless, 14-minute “Weather Report Suite: Prelude/Pt. 1/Pt. 2-Let It Grow” leading into a 27-minute “Jam” that is simply one of the most far-ranging, telepathic improvisations ever played by, well, anybody. That this set also includes a separation of the “Sunshine Daydream” section from “Sugar Magnolia” for only the second time ever is just gravy. Out of print for years.

ROAD TRIPS VOL. 1 NO. 3—SUMMER ’71 (2-CD Set)

STREET DATE: JUNE 3, 2022 Hunter Thompson’s oft-quoted adage “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro” has always been central to the Grateful Dead’s ethos, and never more so than in the Summer of 1971. The departures of Tom Constanten and Mickey Hart, and the delicate health of Pigpen left the band with a lot that was, to quote the title of the Otis Redding tune that appears here, “Hard to Handle.” Yet, just as the band embraced chaos in their improvisations, the Dead transcended the chaos of their personal and professional lives to embark on one of their most musically satisfying tours, which this 2-CD set captures with a disc each devoted to the 7/31/71 show at the Yale Bowl in New Haven and the 8/23/71 show at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Many of these songs, like “Wharf Rat” and the covers of “Me and My Uncle” and “Big Railroad Blues” (a particularly rocking version), were about to premiere on the September 1971 double-LP Grateful Dead a.k.a. Skull and Roses, while “Sugaree” and “Bird Song” didn’t come out till January of 1972 on Jerry Garcia’s eponymous debut solo album, so this Trip provides the always fascinating, caught-on-the-fly look at the band integrating new material. And speaking of “Bird Song,” its pairing with a 20-minute plus “Dark Star” is, simply, peak Dead, further evidence that at this point in time, the Grateful Dead was arguably the greatest live band in the world, a claim further bolstered by the medley featuring “The Other One.” Blair Jackson’s notes set the scene; recorded by Rex Jackson and mastered in HDCD sound by Jeffrey Norman. PARKER GRIGGS OF

RADIO MOSCOW NEW BAND

EL PERRO is a brand new band led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Parker Griggs of RADIO MOSCOW. The sound contains elements that fans of Radio Moscow will recognize, but this is rock music with a new, fresh spin and feel. The band’s debut album, “Hair Of El Perro”, takes heavy psychedelic rock as a starting point but jams into more syncopated territory, spicing its sound with Latin rhythms and hints of Funkadelic-style grooves. You could say that EL PERRO plays psychedelic funk rock, and you wouldn’t be wrong.

Beside Parker Griggs, EL PERRO also includes former Radio Moscow drummer Lonnie Blanton, bassist Shawn Davis, and guitarist Holland Redd. The LTD. CD version includes one bonus track not on the vinyl. STREET DATE 6/03/2022

DEAN SPUNT JOHN WIESE

THE ECHOING SHELL

With their duo debut, Dean Spunt and John Wiese invite you to experience the frenzy of percussive space and discreet sound found inside The Echoing Shell. This is the first official collaboration between the two veteran music-makers, though their connection goes back to 1999. As John recalls, “[ Dean ] was in a high school arts program at CalArts. A friend and I were recording the first Sissy Spacek demo in the design studios there, and taking a tape to my car over and over again to check the mix. Dean was walking through the parking lot with a Locust shirt on, we said hello, and he immediately got into a car with two strangers to ‘listen to a tape’.” The tape-listening ended well, apparently. Dean and John became friends and fellow travelers in L.A. circles and beyond: in 2005, John did a remix for Dean’s first band, Wives; in 2007, Dean played percussion with Sissy Spacek’s 13-Tet Los Angeles; John toured with No Age several times and collaborated live with them in 2010. Under the Sissy Spacek name as well as his own, John’s recordings for his own Helicopter label and many others kicked things off for him around the end of the century; since then, he’s been constantly engaged in solos and collaborations on record, performances, and installations around the world. In addition to Dean’s ever-growing discography with No Age, he curates his own label, Post Present Medium. In 2018, Radical Documents released Dean’s solo debut EE Head, which explored concrète and experimental techniques in a four-part, album length piece. The Echoing Shell is born of Dean and John’s shared understanding, using John’s process common to Sissy Spacek: elaborate sound-collage works using source material originating from punk, hardcore and improvised music. A series of impositions, tape manipulation and edits recompose the material, cracking open the crust of the source, freeing its implied guts to steam forth in gushes of extreme noise. On The Echoing Shell, this is as often noise as it is extreme intimacy, seeming at times to be sourced from within Dean’s drumkit, at other times appearing to emanate from the capsules of microphones and the circuits of the signal path itself. One may read these collaged sounds as abstraction, but there is a unique language conveyed in their assembly, forming something like word-shapes and meaning. And intention: the two side-long pieces, comprised of many short sections, form a linear whole, creating alternately ripping and discriminating music — and meaning — in the process. The Echoing Shell is a fantastic conception in contemporary musique concrète, combining incendiary post-rock power, dry humor and astonishing depth of field. Whether projecting the sound through headphones, ear buds, bookshelf speakers or your own personal amp stack, crank up The Echoing Shell!

THE BETHS

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 2020 The anticipation is there in Elizabeth Stokes’ solo guitar riff under the opening lines of “I’m Not Getting Excited”: a frenetic, driving force daring a packed Auckland Town Hall to do exactly the opposite of what the track title suggests. As the opener of The Beths’ Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 expands to include the full band, the crowd screeches and bellows. It’s a collective exhalation, in one of the few countries where live music is still possible. The album title, and film of the same name, deliberately include the date and location, lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce says. “That’s the sensational part of what we actually did.” In a midpandemic world, playing to a heaving, enraptured home crowd feels miraculous. In March 2020, everything seemed on track for another huge year for The Beths. Home after an 18-month northern hemisphere tour, they had just finished recording sophomore album Jump Rope Gazers and were primed for more extensive touring. But within days, New Zealand’s lockdown split the band between three separate houses. All touring was cancelled. “It was existentially bad,” Stokes says. As well as worrying about economic survival, they lost something crucial to the band’s identity: live performance. “It’s a huge part of how we see ourselves... What does it mean, if we can’t play live?” The band found an outlet through live-streaming, returning to the do-it-yourself mentality of their early days to connect with a global audience. The album and film have their genesis in that urge to share the now-rare experience of a live show, as widely as possible. The fuzzy-round-the-edges live-streams pointed the way aesthetically. Native birds, wonkily crafted by the band from tissue paper and wire, festoon the venue’s cavernous ceiling while house plants soften and disguise the imposing pipes of an organ. The presence of the film crew isn’t disguised: much of the camerawork is handheld; full of fast zooms and pans. With much of the material still fresh, the band was less focused on re-invention than playing “a good, fast rock show”, Pearce says. The tempo is up on crowd favourites “Whatever” and “Future Me Hates Me” (released as a live single on its third anniversary) as both band and audience feed off the mutual energy in the room. Certain songs have taken on special resonance post-Covid. Pearce has found “Out Of Sight”, a tender rumination on long-distance relationships, hits particularly hard with live audiences.

SUPERCRUSH MELODY MAKER

Supercrush are back to administer another dose of impossibly infectious guitar pop with their new EP, Melody Maker. The Seattle-based group–led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Palm along with bassist Phil Jones and drummer Allen Trainer–named their latest batch of songs after a simple student model electric guitar and a weekly rock mag of yesteryear. It’s a winking tribute to the rock ’n’ roll continuum that the band so lovingly embraces, but also a fitting nod to the band members themselves and the amount of genuine songcraft that goes into making music that sounds so effortlessly catchy. Recorded during the same sessions as Supercrush’s 2020 debut album, SODO Pop, the five songs on Melody Marker are far from throwaway leftovers. “We recorded all of the songs at the same time as the LP and then had to decide where everything was going to end up,” Palm explains. “It was a pretty challenging process, but I think these songs ended up making sense together.” Engineered by Jones and longtime collaborator Jackson Long and then mixed by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, Sebadoh, Wild Pink), the music on Melody Maker highlights Supercrush’s split personality: equal parts soft sentimentality and loud rock bravado. “When I started doing Supercrush it was sort of a return to my earliest musical interests,” says Palm. “I got into catchy stuff and grunge bands before I even got into punk and aggressive music. There was a big indie and alt rock thing happening in eastern Canada when I was growing up, with bands like Sloan and the Doughboys getting played on MuchMusic all the time, so I was exposed to all of that. In my mind any band that’s melodic and guitar-based is fair game to be an influence on Supercrush–from The Beatles, to My Bloody Valentine, to Boston.” Supercrush’s desire to take the songwriting seriously, but not themselves, is evident on “Trophy,” an experiment in heavy rotation one-hit wonder radio hit-making that started as a songwriting exercise and became an inadvertent EP standout. The song playfully celebrates the artistry of the commercial earworm, with the band daring themselves to take it one key change, one hand clap too far–but always landing on the right side of catchiness. “There’s a craft to this kind of music, once you learn the trade you can start building on it,” Palm says. “To me it’s so fun to find something unique within the tight framework of pop songwriting. You almost have to be extra creative to express yourself within the limitations of such a rigid genre.” It’s that drive to keep pushing themselves that elevates Supercrush far beyond the realm of pastiche and into territory that’s catchy but also compelling. As Melody Maker ends with the towering, five and half minute, shoegaze-inflected closer, “Helium High,” it’s clear that this is a bonafide rock ’n’ roll outfit, one that’s putting in the work it takes to make big guitars and big hooks sound so instantly satisfying. Luckily, all the listener has to do is turn it up.

Inspiration can strike anyone at any time, and more often than not from somewhat peculiar quarters. Rarely more so than when Sam Grant - thus far best known as guitarist and producer of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - finally set about work on a solo project that had been pursuing him for some years. “I want people to imagine that feeling of rubber - its physical memory, the unnatural vibe of it. It’s so tactile but alien. It’s an odd analogy, but that’s what this music is for me.”A specific gravity is one more property that rubber has going for it, and that much is certainly true of Rubber Oh’s debut album ‘Strange Craft’, the result of his elasticated fixation, and his debut album of deliriously tuneful sci-fi tinged psychpop. It’s a unique soundworld in which an emphasis on beguiling melody marries a kaleidoscopic grandeur. Widescreen gems like the warped interstellar voyage that is Children Of Alchemy and the unshakeable earworm Hyperdrive Fantasyare all vibrant colour and celestial energy, setting their psychic stall out somewhere between the incandescent headspace of a ‘70s sci-fi TV show and the red-light-fever of the overheated ampstacks Grant has been historically more familiar with.Ultimately, for Grant as well as everyone else, Rubber Oh amounts to one strange trip - “Many of the lyrics are about alchemy, journeying and vessels, as interchangeable metaphors for knowledge and wisdom” he says. “I wanted to mesh the land and sea, the cosmos and the psyche across the tracks as one single plane” Mission accomplished, in short. American Dreams Records SAAJTAK FOR THE MAKERS

The band Saajtak, based in Detroit ( Jonathan Barahal Taylor, Ben Willis, Simon Alexander-Adams) and Brooklyn (Alex Koi), makes futuristic music that synthesizes a wide range of genres—often in ways that seem to clash against each other, always in service to the song. The band has quietly made music in Detroit for the better part of a decade, collaborating with members of clipping. and sharing bills with Xiu Xiu, Ava Mendoza and Greg Fox. Koi sings and writes lyrics; Taylor plays drums, Willis bass; Alexander-Adams contributes electronics. But to individuate their contributions does the music a disservice. Saajtak sounds, feels, like a living, breathing organism, for which recordings don’t present definitive documents as much as they reflect songs at given points in their lives. For the Makers, the band’s first album, brims with ideas, treating their shape-shifting compositions with a high depth of field. The band grew from playing music with the University of Michigan’s campus improvising ensemble, Creative Arts Orchestra. Like the Orchestra, Saajtak’s compositions are rooted in collective improvisation; their first release, spectral [ drips ], collects several free improvisations. The band was recording music live for a full-length debut when the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic pressed

pause on their principal way of making music. In response, the band began working on new music remotely, in increments of eight days. Every two days, members would trade songs, gradually sculpting them into final iterations. Willis recalls putting on his headphones as he began recording bass: “The layers that Alex, Simon, and Jon had begun to craft engulfed me like a wave, filling me. I was suddenly surrounded by my friends.” Over time, the music organically cohered into an album, bringing together influences as wide-ranging as Richard Davis, Meredith Monk and Melvins. Koi’s lyrics balance narrative and enigma, incorporating several perspectives within a song in an approach she calls polyphonic narrative: “There’s this constant chain and interconnected web of happenings and motion which I work to capture in song.” The record is in motion from the start, opening in medias res with anthemic lead single “Big Exit.” Koi treats her words like playthings, stretching syllables past semantics, vocal lines in conversation with one another. Alexander-Adams’ electronics quiver, and Taylor’s clattering kit seems to deconstruct the rhythm it builds, before the song unspools into a lush, minimal coda just before the 4-minute mark. “Concertmate 680” follows in a similar fashion, with a

tight groove belying the song’s spare lyrics: “Desire 5ever rainbows. Spy on you.” Collaborations with guitarist Kirsten Carey, saxophonists Marcus Elliot and Kaleigh Wilder, cellist Pat Reinholz, and vocalist David Magumba add still more color to the band’s vibrant compositions. “There’s a Leak in the Shielding” references history, then uses it as a weapon: “Here, now, there is no pen,” Koi sings, “and your children’s children will not recognize them.” Her vocal melody, and the seeming naiveté of her inflection, recalls Arthur Russell, as do Alexander-Adams’ wet, percussive electronics. Throughout, the album mixes the organic and synthetic. Even as motifs, images and lyrics recur, the music thrums with energy, opening into new worlds. This, perhaps, is part of the point: to illustrate an escape, to be one. To Alexander-Adams, For the Makers was “as much a healing practice as it was a means to create”; to Willis, it “feels like a year-improvisation, for which the music never stopped the whole time.” Says Taylor, “it represents our collective voice in the deepest sense: an amalgamation of our individual vulnerabilities, imaginations, ambitions, and love for each other.” The album is testament to the restless creativity powering Saajtak’s engine, and the importance of cultivating creativity, trust and community.

Sarah Brown releases her debut album ‘Sarah Brown Sings Mahalia Jackson’ . The record sees Sarah offer her interpretations of some of the classic tracks of arguably the most famous gospel singer of the last century who gave Brown hope and sanctuary through hard times faced over the years. Sarah explains: “For as long as I can remember, Mahalia Jackson with her fever pitched performances have been a soothing note to my tapestry. At 10 years old, I remember hopelessly trying to sing along to her bellowing thunder of a voice. In my bedroom I would become her. I chose these songs because they tell of my story. The style I was trying to achieve was influenced by early jazz, blues and the spirituals. I am happy with the sound/style of the album. It was always going to be an experiment but I had no idea that it was going to sound as good and as authentic as it does. ‘Didn’t It Rain’ as a jazz feel. ‘Nobody Knows’ as a spiritual feel then it goes into swing jazz. ‘Walk over God’s Heaven’ as a hint of rock & roll with a bit of early swing.” You may not know Sarah Brown’s name but you’ll definitely have heard her voice. From her collaborations with the likes of George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Duran Duran, Simply Red, Roxy Music, Pink Floyd, Simple Minds … Sarah Brown is one of the most prolific and in-demand vocalists in the world. 1 Nobody Knows 2 I’m On My Way 3 Didn’t It Rain 4 Summertime 5 Walk Over God’s Heaven 6 Just A Closer Walk 7 Trouble Of The World 8 Joshua Fought The Battle 9 Amazing Grace

Astrel K is Rhys Edwards of Ulrika Spacek. Following the loss of KEN, a shared house in which Ulrika Spacek band members lived and worked from, Edwards relocated to Stockholm, Sweden where he began making music on his own: “At this time, I didn’t really know anyone in Stockholm so kinda retreated into making music just by myself. The album title definitely reflects this period; I was on my own making music and sometimes nothing would be happening and sometimes there would be little sparks of ideas that could keep me going” Edwards would spend nights writing and recording in a shared rehearsal space producing music rich with layers and texture, synonymous with the work of Ulrika Spacek but with perhaps a greater focus on the art of ‘song writing’. Tracks with verses and choruses are surrounded by instrumental interludes; inspired by old library music and compositions for film as well as being reminiscent of bands such as Broadcast. Written pre pandemic but mixed in the past year, the music led Edwards to finding like minded musicians from the Stockholm music scene: “Though I’m now glad I can say I wrote an album by myself, I was definitely confronted with my own musical strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes when you have an A/B decision you want some perspective and you’d be in the studio, turn around and no one is there. It really made me curious to bring in more people into the fold, not to compromise any original vision or anything, but to have other energy in the room, to exorcise out any lazy tricks I may fall into”. Stockholm musicians (including Lili Holényi, Milton Öhrström, Niklas Mellberg, Tomas Hellberg) played on the album and join Edwards in the live version of the project. 1 Is It It Or Is It I? 2 You Could If You Can 3 Imperial Phase 4 9V 5 Clicktivism 6 Clean Coal 7 Forwardmomentum 8 Flickering i 9 Morbid Clinging 10 Maybe It All Comes At Once

Having scooped the prestigious Record Store Day Unsigned 2020 award, her debut album ‘In The Blue Corner’ was released as a limited edition run on turquoise sparkle vinyl in November 2021. Now available on a full physical release including a new vinyl pressing on dusk blue coloured vinyl. Included in Craig Charles’ Funk and Soul ‘Ones to Watch 2022’ list. From London via Lagos, charismatic chanteuse Sister Cookie will take you on an eclectic excursion into the roots & fruits of black music. Old sounds, new tricks. Sensuous, seductive and moody. As well as possessing a distinctive voice that's tender and sweet when it needs to be, she’s a composer and self-taught pianist who writes honest and raw songs about pain, heartbreak, suffering - all that bad (meaning-good) stuff. A mainstay on the vintage Soul & R’n’R circuit since 2015 with slots at Wilderness, Latitude, Red Rooster, Port Elliot and more under her belt - as well as touring across Europe with her band – Sister Cookie has so far been supported by Craig Charles, Mark Radcliffe & Cerys Matthews at 6Music, Robert Elms on BBC London plus plays on Resonance, Jazz FM and Amazing Radio. She’s performed at some of the UK’s most esteemed venues including the 100 Club and Union Chapel, The Round Chapel and has enjoyed a number of stints as a guest vocalist with The Soulful Orchestra, Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind, Future Shape Of Sound & MFC Chicken. Deluxe LP is 180g black vinyl, tip-on gatefold jacket. Standard LP is 180g bone vinyl, standard sleeve. Gatefold CD jacket, printed inner-sleeve. London four-piece Crows will release their highly anticipated second album. ‘Beware Believers’ LP arrives off the back of their critically acclaimed 2019 debut ‘Silver Tongues’, international touring and festival appearances, and shared stages with the likes of IDLES, Wolf Alice, Girl Band, Metz, Slaves and Protomartyr. Loud, cathartic and abrasive a quintessential Crows record it certainly is. “Beware Believers has felt like a marathon, a real endurance test that’s been a long, winding road filled with highs and lows and plenty of twists and turns”, frontman James Cox says: “The majority of the themes on the album came from what was going on in the world around Summer 2019 when we started writing the album. Covid wasn't in our lives and the biggest impact the madness our government were putting us through. I was reading a lot of J.G. Ballard and Kurt Vonnegut, mad dystopian novels, whilst all this craziness was going on around us and it was a weird headspace to get into.” 1) Closer Still 2) Garden of England 3) Only Time 4) Slowly Separate 5) Moderation 6) Healing 7) Room 156 8) Meanwhile 9) Wild Eyed And Loathsome 10) The Servant 11) Sad Lad

Tenebra – Moongazer New Heavy Sounds

LP NHSLP036X 5055869548229 CD NHSCD036

5055869548236

Very limited vinyl pressing, 500 copies in a gatefold sleeve, a printed inner housing white and marbling effect vinyl with full download included. CD in a 4 panel digipack with a 4 page booklet. 2nd album by the 4 piece stoner rock powerhouse from Italy, TENEBRA. Moongazer takes the story a stage further with 9 slabs of crushing fuzzed up grooves, fuelled by 70’s proto metal, hard rock, punk, psych-blues and noise, loaded with great riffs and melody and topped off by gutsy soulful vocals. Musically, you could say that TENEBRA occupy similar musical terrain to bands such as Graveyard, Witchcraft, Kadaver and other bands of that ilk, but TENEBRA are very much their own beast. They have all the chops of course, but are musically less slavish, often adding a twist that keeps the songs fresh and now. There’s also very little reliance on Sabbath-isms (apart from one cheeky nod) and though occult rock is also part of the vibe, the music steers well clear of the cliches. In fact the band bring a clutch of left field influences into their melting pot as well, from June of 44 and Love Battery to the Misfits and the psych grunge of Screaming Trees.
