THE CARPARK LABEL FAMILY

The Carpark Records label family includes Carpark Records, Company Records (established by Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi), Wax Nine (established by Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz) and inactive labels Paw Tracks (established by Animal Collective) and Acute (reissue label). Each imprint was born through collaboration between Carpark Records and other artists. Altogether, they are rooted in Carpark’s origins as an experimental label, but demonstrate their expansion into unique, genre-bending territories.

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Todd Hyman at Carpark Records How did you personally get started in the music industry? I started doing college radio and worked my way up until I was music director for 2 years. After college I worked at record labels and stores. I interned at a few labels. After resisting for a few years I saw an opening where it seemed like a good idea to start a record label. When and where did the label begin? Carpark was started in 1999 in New York city. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? I had spent the previous year in Glasgow, Scotland getting a masters degree in popular music studies. Carpark is the word for parking garage in the UK. I liked the way the word sounded and the way it looked on paper. And I also liked that the word had nothing to do with music, at least on the surface. How has the label changed since it started? Carpark was originally an all electronic label. In the late 90s I thought indie rock was dead and computer music was the future. I was trying to show that with Carpark. However after a couple years the whole experimental/IDM laptop thing seemed to have hit a ceiling. And I wanted to keep moving forward. So I gradually started incorporating more “non-digital” music into the roster. We moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 2005 and I started hanging out with the Wham City crew in Baltimore. There was so much great stuff happening there then that I decided to abandon any kind of narrow definition of what I thought the label should be and decided to just put out whatever I really liked. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. My name is Todd Hyman and I am the president and founder of Carpark. Steph Salas is our label manager and runs the show. Alec Moss is our production manager. Beth Townsend is our marketing manager. Zeeshan Shad is our newest member and as Production and Marketing Coordinator, he is helping Alec and Beth. Rob Carmichael is our art director. We also have the team of Andy Moss, Josh Clark and Dylan Leggett running the show in Europe. And a whole cast of other folks helping us in other areas behind the scenes. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Just keeping everything running properly during the pandemic has been a challenge. Vinyl production delays radically changed how we physically release music. Successfully introducing new music during a pandemic seems much harder as well. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? I don’t think so. We have employees in Washington, DC, New York City, Los Angeles, and Manchester, UK. We work primarily with American musicians. But we have worked with many folks in Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. Even before it became more up front in the last few years our original mission has always been to try and represent different types of people from different parts of the world. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? Nowhere in particular really. Every band has a different story. Could be a random find on the internet, an attractive email, a recommendation from a band/staff/friend, always a surprise! Sorry - can’t spill the beans on new finds! Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? I would say we are pretty eclectic ourselves. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? I think at the beginning I was just happy to be releasing music. But as I got the hang of that I became more interested in releasing music that would have a broader appeal and started having goals for having more successful artists and releases. I’m seeing how far we can take things. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Sorry I really can’t pick favorites. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Hmm not sure. “Wild” is not really a part of our identity. I think making promotional tchotchkes is about as wild as we typically get. I guess we’ve done a couple of billboards over the years if you consider that wild. If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?

I think we’re pretty happy with what we’re doing. I can’t think of anything I wish we could do that we haven’t already done. Sorry to be boring. We’re not really flashy people here. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We are fans of color vinyl. I think a majority of our releases per year have a color vinyl edition of some kind. For The Beths “Future Me Hates Me” we did a different color for every repress which has been fun and successful. I think we have 10 colors now! We did an LP box set for Panda Bear “Tomboy” on our sub label Paw Tracks back in the day which was pretty complex. And we also did a seven inch box set for Toro y Moi “June 2009”. Sonic Boom is also a big fan of creative packaging. His “Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough” LP had a foil jacket with embossing and splatter vinyl. I think the Avey Tare “Down There” LP on Paw Tracks was the most difficult to make. There was an inner sleeve with little crocodile shapes that were alternatively cut out with a laser and then there was a sleeve inside that with art that showed through the cut outs. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We make cassettes for a few of our releases every year. Every major release has a CD version. We’ve been making CDs and LPs since the beginning. I didn’t think we were selling more CDs myself! How would you describe the average fan of the label? I hope we don’t have any average fans. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? I did play drums in a few bands in college and DJ’d a lot when I lived in nyc. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Pretty important. It would be great if we could not make any waste. Though I guess even with digital-only there is the environmental cost of all the energy used to store all the music. Guess we need a lot more solar panels and wind turbines. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? A big priority. We’ve donated a lot of money over the last few years to social justice charities. In terms of Carpark mental health, we’ve instituted extra days off during the pandemic and end the week early on Summer Fridays. I think this has helped our team’s mental health the past couple years. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? When Carpark started there was no legal way to listen to music digitally. Napster was the only game in town. So we’ve gone from a physical only landscape to a mostly digital one in about 10-15 years? Also I was still sending and receiving faxes when I started Carpark. And I don’t think digital demos existed then (ie no soundcloud, youtube, et al). If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We have already done 4 sub labels so i think i’m all sub-labelled out, sorry. We did Paw Tracks with Animal Collective, a post punk reissue label called Acute (Glenn Branca, Metal Urbain, Fire Engines et al), and currently run Company Records with Chaz from Toro y Moi, and Wax Nine with Sadie from Speedy Ortiz. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Thanks to Ear X-Tacy in Louisville (RIP) for being there and enabling me to buy my first indie music releases back in high school before the internet etc. I remember having to special order Teenage Fanclub “A Catholic Education” - I don’t think the clerk checking me out knew what it was ha. Also crucial early purchases: first Mudhoney CD, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Fugazi 13 Songs, New Order, Cocteau Twins “Heaven Or Las Vegas” and early Pixies. And also to Reckless Records in Chicago. Over my 4 years of college I must have spent thousands of dollars there for my personal collection as well as for our college radio station. I’m sure we indirectly helped labels like Drag City and Thrill Jockey pick up some artists back in the mid 90s ha. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? I don’t think anyone will remember Carpark in 100 years. Though maybe someone scouring through the Library of Congress in a few hundred years might come across it.

DC187 LP

NO EXPORT OF ANY KIND TO EUROPE/JAPAN/AUSTRALIA/NZ; MAKE IT RAIN EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD

In the early aughts, after a decade performing as Smog, Bill Callahan thought he might start recording under his own name. This made the record company (us, sigh . . . ) nervous, so a compromise was struck: how about (Smog) instead? That gambit only worked for a year or so, and then we got some therapy for our nerves and he got the name change we all deserved: Bill Callahan, if you please, full stop, no parentheses needed, end of story. And since then, life just gets increasingly better. . .

RAIN ON LENS IS ALSO STILL AVAILABLE ON CD: DC187CD UPC: 036172918720 List Price $14.98

Rain On Lens was the first of three records to be released with the brackets — a chiaroscuro-draped passage between Dongs of Sevotion and Supper, if you will. Rife with the further adventures and evolution in the Callahanian tongue that continue to dazzle the world everytime he makes another new one. And always with at least one classic ballad (here it’s “Live As If Someone Is Always Watching You”— but imagine “Keep Some Steady Friends Around” with just a guitar backing it! Total melter), the unblinking-yet-compassionate character study (“Lazy Rain”), a masterful comic vignette (“Short Drive”), and the through-the-looking-glass set closer (“Revanchism”). Check and double-check, Rain On Lens! It’s quite the record. But it’s been out of print on vinyl since the end of 2016. Think of all the kids who’ve been born since then! They’ll need this one day. All we can add in closing is, We’re sorry. And, You’re welcome — DRAG CITY INCORPORATED PO BOX 476867 CHICAGO ILLINOIS 60647 / ph 312.455.105 / sales@dragcity.com

Cowboy Junkies

Songs of the Recollection Long admired for the carefully chosen cover versions of songs that have been part of their repertoire from the very beginning, Cowboy Junkies release Songs of the Recollection on Proper Records, consisting of nine covers both newly recorded and curated from previous album projects. Label: Proper Records Cat. No: PRPCD160 (CD) | PRPLP160 (LP) Format: CD | LP | Digital Barcode: 805520031608 (CD) 805520001601 (LP)

Michael Timmins recalls, "Long before we were musicians, we were music fans. We didn't grow up sitting around the kitchen table playing instruments and harmonising. We grew up sitting around the record player listening to each other's record collections and having our minds blown. This was the passion that we shared. Our goal has always been to create music that took hold of the listener the way that this music took hold of us. These are some of the songs and some of the artists that found their way into our lives and eventually into our repertoire over the past fifty years." This inspired, and inspiring, collection features tracks from David Bowie, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Vic Chesnutt and The Cure.

With its latest album, Fortune Favors The Bold, Russell County, Virginia-based 49 Winchester is ready and roaring to break onto the national scene with its unique brand of tear-in-your-beer alt-country, sticky barroom floor rock-n-roll, and high-octane Appalachian folk. Fortune Favors The Bold is not only a record that showcases the current state of 49 Winchester, it’s a melodic stake in the ground of how this group is constantly evolving and taking shape, sonically and lyrically. But, it’s also about looking into the rearview mirror with a genuine appreciation for where you came from and what you’re made of. Those salt-of-the-earth traits in your blood and character that define what it actually takes to climb that damn mountain of dreams. At its essence, Fortune Favors The Bold is about going against all odds to bring your art into fruition and into the world - come hell or high water.

OVERVIEW Progressive rock in 2005 had gotten slick, soulless and narrow-minded. Bands were imitating bands that were imitating bands that were ... you get the idea. Wobbler was something very, very different. In keeping with the original progressive ethos, they took inspirations from a wide variety of sources. 60s and 70s rock, jazz, electronica and extreme metal, to name a few. They combined these influences with a deep and astute understanding of what it was that made the best 1970s progressive rock tick. The dramatic dynamics, the shadings of light and darkness, the warm, ghostly sonorities of arcane instruments like the Mellotron, the Mini-Moog or how about a theorbo or a recorder? And of course, the thunderous growl of the Rickenbacker bass guitar. The release of “Hinterland” in 2005 got the band a sizable international audience almost overnight, and many raving reviews praising the record's authentic sound and the complex yet beautiful songwriting. “Hinterland” was the start for one of the best progressive rock bands that has emerged in the early 2000s, and is now finally available again on CD and vinyl. It will also be part of a limited vinyl box collecting the first three albums. DISCOGRAPHY

OVERVIEW After the success of “Hinterland” in 2005, the band stretched forward to show a truer picture of the band’s inner nature. Many fans were asking for the early demo they did in 2003, and these tracks were re-recorded with the full band for “Afterglow”. The strong influence of black metal can be heard both in the surprising power and aggression of some sections, as well as the structure and tonality of many of the riffs. Paradoxically, “Afterglow” was also a more dyed-in-the-wool proggy prog rock album, with its epic-length compositions and detours into renaissance and baroque music. “Afterglow” was also a well-received record, scratching the itch that fans had felt for those early demos, and cementing the band's position as a leading light among "retro" prog bands. “Afterglow” was the start for one of the best progressive rock bands that has emerged in the early 2000’s, and is now finally available again on CD and limited coloured vinyl. It will also be part of a limited box collecting the first three albums. DISCOGRAPHY

OVERVIEW For “Rites at Dawn” it was time for a change. Wanting to up their game both musically and sonically, the band took their sweet time to hone their new material and to record things as pristinely as they could. A major factor in the "new" Wobbler sound that would appear on the band's 3rd album, “Rites at Dawn” (2011), was the arrival of new singer Andreas W. S. Prestmo. Since Andreas is also a songwriter and lyricist, he brought the band up to a new level where vocal melodies, lyrics, arrangements and performances came together in a cohesive whole. “Rites at Dawn” reflected Andreas' preoccupations with nature and spirituality in words and music that took on a luminous, mystical nature. It was also an album where Lars' production skills came to the fore, with a mix that was crystal clear, showcasing each individual musician's newfound maturity. Martin's drums had never sounded better, and the intricacies and grooves of his playing were perfectly married to Kristian's Rickenbacker, that wove its way between Lars and Morten's labyrinthine chords and leads in a remarkably melodic, yet inventive way. “Rites at Dawn” was their biggest success with both fans and critics up until that point, and is now finally available again on CD and vinyl. It will also be part of a limited box collecting the first three albums. OVERVIEW

Airbag co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist, Bjørn Riis is ready with a new studio album titled “Everything to Everyone”. It features six striking tracks, all dealing with human emotions and the fear of losing one self in the constant effort to meet every, often perceived, expectation. “I was inspired by Dante’s Inferno when I started to write. A bit pretentious perhaps, but I’ve always been fascinated by that very personal journey and the search for some kind of piece or redemption, while being both mentored and hurt along the way. Musically, I wanted to take the listener on that journey, experiencing both hope and anxiety.” In addition to Bjørn’s vocals and celebrated guitar playing, Everything to Everyone feature appearances from Henrik Bergan Fossum (Airbag), Kristian Hultgren (Wobbler), Simen Valldal Johannessen (Oak) and Norwegian singer/songwriter Mimmi Tamba. Once again, Bjørn has teamed up with long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, who co-produced the album with Bjørn, engineered and mixed it. Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow and The Opium Cartel) mastered the album. Bjørn’s last album, A Storm is Coming, was met with rave reviews from both press and fans. Progrock.org.pl called it “A masterpiece” and gave the album 5/5, while Prog Magazine recognised Bjørn’s unique lyrics by commenting “Such a vulnerability is rare to behold in prog.” Selling points:  Fourth full length solo album from Airbag guitar player Bjørn Riis  Mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel)  Digisleeve CD version with two bonus tracks  Limited edition LP on white/black splatter vinyl (1000x)  For fans of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Bjørn Riis and Marillion  Tours to be announced. Ultimately, different to their day job bands, Gentle Sinners brings James' trademark Scottish singing voice with Aidan on the music and production side to create a more experimental electronic sound then we are used to hearing from them. The album was recorded remotely from each other during the recent pandemic lock downs as they now live on different sides of Scotland and having been friends for years, it was a way for them to keep in touch after having no idea when they would be able to see each other, play live again or what both their bands would be able to do next. Gentle Sinners is named after a phrase, "gentle sin" in Romeo & Juliet, where the rules of etiquette are broken with a cheeky wink of the eye. Hardcore fans of The Twilight Sad and Arab Strap will be keen to hear what these gentlemen have been up to so we expect this to appeal to their fanbase.

We Are Busy Bodies returns with a reissue of composter, guitarist, and later producer, Almon Memela’s ultra rare 1975 album, Funky Africa. From the original liner notes: Africa has always been many things to many people. To some, Africa is the Dark Continent, a mysterious, romantic and vast expanse of unexplored territory. To others, again, Africa is the ultimate symbol of man's triumph over his environment: a wakening giant destined to play a significant role in world affairs. But to Almon Memela, Africa is Home . . . and his music tells it like it really is. "Funky Africa" is the sound of Africa today. And as you listen, you will find that Africa is indeed many things. For in the music of Almon Memela lies everything that is Africa: the call of the wild and the scream of the Jumbo; the throb of the bush and the roar of Commissioner Street. So here it is . . . "Funky Africa". The sound of Africa, by an African, for the world.

Jewlia laid down vocals and oversaw the recording of the majority of band tracks but was not able to finish. Since her passing, her longtime collaborator Marika Hughes has completed the album consistent with Jewlia’s vision based on her notes and past performances. Los Angeles-bred “SoCal Country” singer Sam Outlaw will release a pedal steel-stamped, new wave-inspired record tled ‘Popular Mechanics’. Solely wring seven of the album’s 11 tracks, Outlaw fuses the sounds of his favorite arsts of the ‘80s - Kenny Loggins, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Pey - with stories influenced by the great innovators of the 20th century and the engineers that make up his own family tree. The ambious direcon of ‘Popular Mechanics’ may seem like a sudden shi from Outlaw’s country-leaning albums, ‘Angeleno’ (2015) and ‘Tenderheart’ (2017), which garnered appearances on CBS Saturday Morning’s Anthony Mason, NPR, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal and more, but the gears actually started turning in early 2018 aer Outlaw shelved some new material he recorded in Southern California. Following his cross-country move to Music City that same year, Outlaw found unexpected inspiraon during a visit from his father, a mechanical engineer, and it prompted him to shi his focus to the technological side of music creaon. The epiphany came when he connected industrial machines with the role technology plays in recorded music. Growing up on the hits of the ‘80s, an incredible me of transformaon in music history, he remembers everything came into focus for the album once he envisioned the tle, ‘Popular Mechanics.’ “I’ve always loved ‘80s music so I started learning about the engineers and music producers from that era, like Trevor Horn, Mu Lange, Neil Dorfsman,” says Outlaw. “It was a me when the producer and the recording engineer were as crical to the creave process as the arsts. Those producers pushed the technology to achieve their creave vision because their inspiraon was not so much the music of the past, but the possibilies of the future.”

Tracklist: 1. Arabian Nights 2. Depeche Load 3. Fort Apache Marina 4. Lambo 5. Miami Murder 6. Natasha K.G.B 7. The Demon 8. Valley of Death

With his new electronic outrun music project BERGETON, Morten Bergeton Iversen (Teloch of the Norwegian black metal band MAYHEM) has succeeded in creating a hard hitting album by the name Miami Murder which takes the listener on a retrofuturistic ride through nostalgic landscapes of commodore 64 square waves. The atmospheric presence of a neo-noir necropolis mega citys, combined with a raw adrenaline bass sounds that punch you in the gut, Miami Murder could fit right in the genre of games like Hotline Miami. Combining perfectly executed waves of new and old technology, Miami Murder is an album that has your nostalgic cravings covered. Morten started experimenting with electronic sounds back in 2000-2005 in order to push him creatively and produce something new, and Miami Murder is BERGETON´s take on the synthwave/outrun genre with Morten's own twist. Written and recorded in Oslo Norway during 2018, Morten did not have any time to release and promote his new epic creation due to writing obligations for MAYHEM, but now he is finally taking these fascinations to the max. The sound of these tracks is powerful and balanced, with a focus on heavy droning bass lines and hard-hitting grooves that underlie a lot of melodic ornamentation. If you miss the engineered futuresynth sounds of the 80s horror, sci-fi and action movies, this retrowave album was made for you! Overview: • Hard hitting, fast phased, punchy retro synthwave, that combines the new age sound with old school retro synthwave. • First album from BERGETON, by Morten Bergeton Iversen (Teloch of MAYHEM). • An album that gives the listener a nostalgic sensation that takes them back to the gold old days with movies like Blade Runner. • For fans of Carpenter Brut, Daniel Deluxe, Perturbator, Master Boot Record, Waveshaper, Dynatron, Mega Drive. • Available on Gatefold 12" pink vinyl. “The songs are just stories that relate to my life, but they’re open to the listener’s interpretation. They tell me what the songs mean to them. The only thing I ever enjoyed in school growing up was English class, when they would let us create our own short stories and write about whatever we were feeling that day. That’s the approach I try to take while I was writing and creating this album.”

“I wrote the album in a tiny apartment, at a time when everything felt big and overwhelming,” says poet and songwriter Jenny Berkel about her new album, These Are the Sounds Left from Leaving. She was living in a brownstone walk-up full of radiant light and the ever-present soundscape of a leaky bath faucet. It was a sudden move at the time—a spontaneous departure from touring, bustling city life, being many things to many people—that landed Jenny in a space of self-imposed stillness. “The songs themselves are a study of proximity, bringing big fears into small spaces,” says Jenny, reflecting on the album. “They’re intimate examinations of a world that often overwhelms.” The album features contributions from critically acclaimed folk duo Kacy & Clayton, and string arrangements by Colin Nealis (Andy Shauf)—and was co-produced by Jenny, alongside Dan Edmonds and Ryan Boldt (The Deep Dark Woods). Recorded live off the floor at the Sugar Shack, the album sparkles with its intended intricacies. Musically, it feels both close and expansive. Each song unfolds like a widening web of poetic associations, narrated by nostalgic piano, pondering strings, glittering guitars—and Jenny’s hauntingly immersive vocals. At times, songs end with an unravelling, the music splintering apart into disintegration like a lingering open question. Warm and dark, soft with stabs of madness, These Are the Sounds Left from Leaving is a cohesive collection of spare songs that bloom lushly with detail. Whether you’re reading Jenny’s poetry—in her debut chapbook Grease Dogs with Baseline Press—or listening to her songs, you’ll experience her drawing layers of far-reaching concern into particular moments, like concentric waves rippling inward toward a lone cast stone. These Are the Sounds Left from Leaving showcases the perspective of a unique storytelling artist, with an evocative practice that hinges powerful narratives on the intricacies of a multifaceted musicality. A songwriter immersed in poetry, a poet immersed in music—her work in all its forms is an invitation into a world of relatable introspection, in which even absences can be sculpted into vividly memorable verse.

About: Over the course of twelve years, a litany of splits and

EPs, two beloved full lengths, and even a couple break-ups, Northeastern fuzz-rock heroes Ovlov have earned a loyal cult following - all while staunchly following their own path at every turn. Now, the band has returned with their third full length, Buds, an album three years in the making that find the band deftly maintaining their endearingly steadfast identity while also reckoning with the inevitability of change. made up of brothers along with their childhood friend, Ovlov's musical DNA is rooted in the kind of familiarity that can only come from real friends playing together. it's largely that chemistry that steers the band's approach: if it doesn't feel right for everyone, don't do it. Their inclinations paid off with both of their full length albums, AM and Tru, both release impossible to keep on the shelves and constantly going out of stock upon repressing. Ovlov manage to gain more followers with every passing day, just by making albums that people relate to. Buds maintains Ovlov's undeniable gift for buoyant melodies but with a more world weary approach. The album finds the band turning to their music to make sense of life, relationships, what's worth holding on to and what needs to be left behind - all housed within the band's signature cacophony of Big Muff pedals and infectious hooks. The album finds the band stretching out in new directions, taking different approaches to their songwriting and welcoming guest vocals from Jordyn Blakely (Smile Machine, Stove), Alex Gehring (Ringo Deathstarr), and Erin McGrath (Dig Nitty). Buds isn't just worth the wait, it's proof that, while there may be a lot of bands, there is only one Ovlov.

EXPERIMENTS IN PLANT BASED MUSIC VOL. 1 Plant-based pop exploration inspired by Mort Garson’s cult 1970s synth oddity “Plantasia.” The album features horns and horn arrangements by Kelly Pratt (Beirut, The War On Drugs, etc), bass by Justin Miller, and mixing assistance from John McEntire of Tortoise.

Were you to walk into Dana Janssen’s tidy gray bungalow with the green chimney in Northeast Portland, the first thing you might notice would be the houseplants. They’re impossible, after all, not to notice. They arc from shady corners into sunlit windows. They line windowsills and lord on countertops. They dominate the bathroom’s humid climes. The second thing you would surely notice — because Janssen, the longtime Akron/Family drummer who has been making kaleidoscopic pop as Dana Buoy for a decade, would surely show you — are the drums that anchor the finished basement studio. Downstairs, he will play you something quick and then beam, like a proud parent of his own adult space. Experiments in Plant-Based Music: Vol. I is Dana Janssen’s exuberant and strangely assuring synthesis of those previously parallel domestic lanes, houseplants and a home drum kit. Inspired by the flora that reign on the ground floor and Mort Garson’s endlessly pleasing Plantasia, and conceived in the basement beneath, these 12 pieces of luxuriant pop — rooted in Steely Dan and synthesizer strata, Afrobeat energy and astral harmonies, Robert Hunter koans and righteous horns — offer new mantras for and prospective maps of our complicated lives. If you worry about any New Age tedium to a record inspired by photosynthesis, don’t: Janssen wants you to sing along with what he’s learned. SHIT AND SHINE

PHASE CORRECTED The Garrote - GRT005 Street Date: May 13th, 2022 Black 180gm LP UPC: 195893132096

For Texas-based Shit and Shine, curveballs are very much the name of the game. Veering from mucky noise rock dirge to gurning slabs of techno, Craig Clouse is uninterested in the self imposed restrictions of genre. Across Shit and Shine’s output he’s proven himself as equally adept at twisting melons as dislocating limbs. -Oliver Cookson (The Quietus)

ALBUM STREAM TRACK LIST: 1. NORTH ATLANTIC (album single) 2. PLUM WHISKEY 3. BURNET ROAD 4. DIVIDRLEEDOTH 5. SOCKTAGON 6. ACRYLIC BC RICH 7. NRUN 8. KYLE DEVILS 9. SLOUGH BY-PASS

On Phase Corrected, Craig Clouse wields slow heavy riffs, industrial drums, and electronics put through a meat grinder. Each track is a lo-fi dirge, with hooky sludge riffs creeping through the electro fog of static and mayhem. If there is a human voice it is sampled and mangled to incoherence. This is Shit and Shine at their nastiest and most brutal.

If KiCk i is a multidimensional self-portrait that held all of Arca’s many mutations, KICK ii sees her deconstruct reggaeton rhythms she grew up listening to in Caracas, balancing structure and chaos to create her most accessible work yet, without sacrificing any of her uncompromising experimentation; the rising cycle. KicK iii sees her returning to the club nights that shaped her early adult-hood where Arca was born: the surrealist DJ, warping dance music structures to fit her singular vision—relentless rhythms to drive listeners into uncharted states of euphoria, anthems for the basementdark queer clubs of our cyberpunk near-future; the climax of the cycle. With kick iiii, the cycle resolves, and a new species of xenopop emerges, sensual and serene. Arca’s talents as a composer and sound designer take the lead on closing track “Paw,” setting melodies to drift on deep, gentle waves of orchestral ambience, an oceanic bliss. On kiCK iiiii the ambient ecstasy transitions swiftly into lullaby-like compositions as we come to the conclusion of the KICK series; the renewal stage. The complete suite of albums drops digitally on December 3. And while the release of the KICK series culminates on December 3, it’s truly only the beginning.

LP / CD STREET DATE: MAY 20, 2022 When you’re a musician used to a certain creative groove, it’s disorienting to have this rhythm disrupted. Like many musicians, Phillips sought out silver linings wherever he could find them once the COVID-19. But in early 2021, when Phillips realized any potential touring options were still on hold for the foreseeable future, he started to write and record a new solo album at home. “I found respite in the process when I could do little else,” he says. “It became a sort of meditation on this time in my life and the events that we’ve collectively experienced.” The resulting full-length, All That You Can Dream, is understandably introspective, as it’s anchored by Phillips’ empathetic voice and rich acoustic guitar. The album’s lyrics attempt to make sense of an uncertain, anxiety-riddled time, while coming to terms with the idea that once-unshakeable things now seem fragile or fallible. “In terms of subject matter, I found that the circumstances of being off the road, and left to reflect on what this time feels like, produced a different kind of song,” Phillips says. “I wasn’t entirely certain—and to be honest, I’m still not altogether certain—when I get to take these songs on the road. In some ways, that freed me up to write and record the kind of song that was personal and executed as though it were for an audience of myself alone. That’s freeing.”

SOAK

If I never know you like this again

May 20th 2022

PRESS “…a bold art-pop auteur; [SOAK’s] growing confidence translates to emotionally probing songs of startling candor.” - Pitchfork “SOAK takes listeners to another place with...expressive, poetic lyrics.” – NPR

TRACKLISTING purgatory last july Bleach get well soon pretzel

gutz baby, you’re full of shit red-eye neptune swear jar

With If I never know you like this again, SOAK’s Bridie Monds-Watson (they/ them) have shaken the hangover of their starry Mercury-nominated debut Before We Forgot How To Dream and their ambitious follow-up album Grim Town, and the pressures that came with them. Having written much of their new album when time felt at its slowest, Bridie, who has always had an obsessive need to document each chapter of their life, now makes a marvel of the mundane. Alongside long-time collaborator Tommy McLaughlin (he/him), the two wrote most of the album together while listening obsessively to indie bands like Broken Social Scene and Pavement and Radiohead’s classic album The Bends. They honed in on this new riff-led, mid-90s sound, “nerding out on guitars and pedals like moronic bros” before recording it with the rest of the band in Attica Studios in Donegal. Previous SOAK albums had either been recorded remotely or by just two people, but If I Never… sees all the members of SOAK in the studio simultaneously. After being away from each other for the majority of the pandemic, it was important to create the record as a band, and the joyful energy of having everyone in the same room again is palpable. On If I never…, SOAK’s brilliant melodies are on full display. Lead single “Last July” features a masterfully off-kilter vocal set against swooning guitars, creating a lush pop song that wouldn’t be out of place in the end credits of a 90s coming-of-age film. Lyrically, Bridie manages to be both playful and self-aware.The idea of identity is central to the record, and Bridie’s lyrics are as deeply personal as they are universal. “This record is the most accurate picture of me. I felt no pressure at all, it was almost like I was ranting as I was writing,” they explain. Bridie’s memories string together to create intimate vignettes of a life richly lived. Tapping into their specific experiences, the result is a record that is deeply relatable and sparkling, as it traverses the ups and downs of their journey to becoming a fully realized person. • 1ST PRESSING CLEAR VINYL W/ BLACK SMOKE • COLLABORATIONS WITH M. WARD, MARISA ANDERSON & CHRIS FUNK (DECEMBERISTS, STEPHEN MALKMUS) Led by drummer José Medeles (Breeders, 1939 Ensemble, Revival Drum Shop), Railroad Cadences & Melancholic Anthems is a drummer’s tribute to guitarist and DIY iconoclast John Fahey. Joined for a series of guitar and drum duets with M. Ward, experimental guitarist Marisa Anderson, and Chris Funk (Decemberists, Stephen Malkmus), it’s a genuinely honorific project, featuring not Fahey compositions, but rather a series of improvised rendezvous inspired and informed by his looseness and rhythmic idiosyncrasies. Though Medeles knew and had interacted with all of his collaborators, the record represents the first time he’s played on a record with Anderson and Funk (though he’s contributed to Ward’s indie pop band She & Him). Recording in the comfortable setting of Bocce Recording in Vancouver, WA, in 2020, these duets are playful and spiritually deep, presented with snapshot clarity Medeles likens to the recordings of Alan Lomax or Chris Strachwitz, “who boldly captured field recording of Southern chain gangs and juke joint raconteurs decades ago. The result here is similar: pure and honest recordings.” From Anderson’s Delta blues on “The Paper Snake” to Funk’s careening slide guitar on “Golden” to Ward’s elegiac electric guitar on “Richness of Peace,” these recordings connect to Fahey’s transcendent states. “It’s past physicality. You’re not thinking, you’re listening,” Medeles says. “Things like that don’t happen if you have any hang ups. The record concludes with “Voice Of The Turtle,” a reverie from Funk and Medeles, who trade washes of cymbals and swells of slide guitar underneath a sample of Fahey speaking, describing the light trance he enters when playing and a scene of Robert Johnson, sans his guitar, entertaining spectators by clapping his hands. “I tried to imitate his rhythmic creativity...I had a lot of old blues records around...I listened to those and tried to imitate them as best I could.” With Railroad Cadences & Melancholic Anthems, Medeles does the same, creating a generous space that invites the listener into the collective unconscious.

COMPANY / MAY 20, 2022

UFFIE SUNSHINE FACTORY Welcome to Uffie’s new album Sunshine Factory – an alternate reality that is only accessible to those yearning for escape. A nod to the ballroom scene, it is a place where you can be your most authentic self. Inside this trippy wonderland, you’ll meet Uffie, dancing amongst the lights of your hallucinations. Sunshine Factory is a wonderfully restless record. It’s a joyride through the club, hurtling into the forest, and crowd surfing into the arms of a lover… and yet it’s also the sound of waking up to a heap of champagne soaked jeans, the bass of your heart still throbbing along to last night’s melodies. A decade after her first record, which included–debatably–the internet’s first viral hit, the electro smash “Pop The Glock,” Uffie “the French-American singer/rapper/DJ/fashion designer who took the internet by storm” (Brooklyn Vegan) is most definitely back. Raised between Florida and Hong Kong before moving to Paris with her British father, the now Los Angeles-based Uffie is undeniably a “child of the world;” unsurprisingly, the making of this record clocked up a few air miles as well. Birthing what would become the Sunshine Factory in Fonte da Telha, Portugal collaborating with Norwegian savant Lasse Lokøy, Uffie soon found a home for these songs back in California with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi–who co-produced several of the tracks–and his Oakland-based label, Company Records. The resulting album is one of intricate production, sonic experimentation, and subtle poetic brilliance amongst a few Fleabag glances to the camera. Amidst double entendres galore, her record exists in a curious space between punk and pop, which can be heard in the ska-meets-fashion week “dominoes.” Contrarily, “sophia” – which marked the advent of Uffie and Chaz’s creative partnership several years ago – poises Sunshine Factory as an otherworldly dance record one would hear in Berlin’s famous Berghain nightclub. She is the party girl who is at her most vulnerable in the chaotic “where does the party go?” where she reckons with facing who she truly is when she’s all alone. It’s in these dualities and juxtapositions that the joy of Uffie writhes. The album also has a cameo or three, including the one and only Peaches. And after finding kinship and admiration in the genre-defying NNAMDÏ, she tapped him for the record’s sole feature on “month of mondays.” It is at this point in the record that the beloved je ne sais quoi that Uffie has always possessed really emerges. When the comedown begins and the insatiable few remain on the dancefloor, “a month of mondays” is the knowing nod to a stranger signaling the night’s shift in course. With Sunshine Factory, it’s a pop-up party wherever you can find some speakers. Cool.

Flock - Flock Flock is a brand new collaboration between five leading musicians from London's open-minded jazz and experimental scenes: Bex Burch (Vula Viel), Sarathy Korwar, Dan “"Danalogue"” Leavers (Soccer96, The Comet Is Coming), Al MacSween (Maisha) and Tamar Osborn (Collocutor). The musicians were first brought together by drummer Sarathy Korwar during March 2020 for one of Boiler Room, Total Refreshment Centre and Night Dreamer’s more memorable streamed sessions from early lockdown. It caught the attention of Strut Records and the label presented an open offer for the musicians to create a new, completely freeform project. Gathering together at The Fish Factory in London Summer 2020, the approach was to try something fresh. “"I wrote texts as scores for the session and the emphasis was on breathing and listening to each other",” explains Bex Burch. “"Improvisation is composition in itself, so although the music was freely improvised, we sometimes chose to stay on form and rhythm, repeating melodies and groove." Tracks include the pulsing, searching opener ‘Expand’, the taught soundscape ‘Prepare To Let Go’ and the frenetic, urgent ‘Bold Dream’. At times widescreen and cinematic and at others more tense and claustrophobic, each Flock piece explores its own colour and mood. "Every moment in this process has been a new journey into the unknown. Everyone came, breathed and brought openness of heart, ears, lungs and wings." ‘Flock’ by Flock is released on Strut on 20th May 2022. Artwork is based on an exclusive new illustration piece by Muhammad “Rofi” Fatchurofi.

OVERVIEW Reading about Alex Izenberg, one picks up on repeated phrases, words like “enigmatic” and “reclusive'' applied to the Los Angeles songwriter. Izenberg transcends those quick descriptors and manages a paradoxical and visionary trick with his third LP, the majestic and floral pop opus I’m Not Here: he disappears completely while simultaneously revealing more of himself than ever before. Like his debut, 2016’s homespun Harlequin, and its ambitious 2020 follow-up Caravan Château, I'm Not Here inhabits the shaggy, world-weary mode of Izenberg’s favorite ‘70s artists, folks like Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Randy Newman, and Lou Reed. Recorded at Tropico Studios and produced by Izenberg and Greg Hartunian, its swelling string and woodwind arrangements - courtesy of collaborator Dave Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) - bring to mind the technicolor sweep of Van Dyke Parks. We are all the sum of our influences, the product of external and internal forces, but on I’m Not Here, Izenberg dives deeper down, beyond discussions of record collections, AM radio coziness, and stylistic flair: “I feel like the concept of ‘Alex Izenberg’ is not real,” he explains. “I feel like I’m not here, but we’re here. We’re all one. There’s one cosmic consciousness—we’re all branches of that.”

I’m Not Here is a gem of vintage pop that feels custom built for the present, in which we ask ourselves how deep our interconnectedness goes. “It’s like what Shakespeare said,” Izenberg explains. "We don’t find our fate out in the stars; we find it within.” Slipping out the back door and into the clouds of the sunset, Izenberg settles into the oneness, inviting you to join him for a spell. He’s not there. You are.

WEST KENSINGTON BLACK VINYL 12” ALBUM LP-TLR-138 Street Date: May 20, 2022 Format: Vinyl LP (with download) UPC: 711574923311

PURPLE VINYL INDIE EXCLUSIVE 12” ALBUM LP-TLR-138LEIEC Street Date: May 20, 2022 Format: Purple Vinyl LP (with download) UPC: 711574923410 It is shocking what your mind will choose to forget. Almost always it needs a tear, a clean dash, a straight passage into what you've already known. Looking back, West Kensington has achieved that very goal: creating a landscape for memory, an imprint of that horizon, suspended in the cosmos. I heard it in real-time, percolating against our shared apartment wall. The assembly of sounds was a comfort; a welcome change during what felt like a fresh era entirely. Like the comets we see every so often, it's the streak of some long-ago awe that we try to comprehend. So much space, so much reach and so far; so much weight hanging in the dark sky. And the reasons we missed the comet - and why - become the moments we remember most. Welcome to The Unknown. “Hundred Dollar Hoagie” is a slap across the face, our new normal. The weight of Mary Lattimore’s harp is our hull, her tones steadying the ship’s course. Paul Sukeena’s guitar is our intrepid guide, as terrified as us. All at once, the things that seem so familiar, appear so far away. The mid-record swells for “Didn't See The Comet” like a hall pass for a coastal drive. The chimes in “Flaming Cherries Jubilee at Antoine's” tell us it’s going to be OK. Permission to land has been granted. The ambient noise dissipates and like a futuristic prelude to Koyaanisqatsi, the chords of the harp conjure a feeling of togetherness and intentional greeting resembling Philip Glass after loads of red wine. These are the tiny holes in the dark. …Time as a constellation. A constellation is only recognized when its stars are aligned: those bright spots, seemingly neighbors beside each other, yet billions of miles apart. The matrix of light is abstracted and creates a new name. What if our memories did the same? Our stained fingertips made stained fingerprints on our foreheads from the garage wine we made together. The cosmic blue-tipped crest of the waves on that warm night, all aglow but not for us. Our memories as gas giants, fleeting supernovas that when glared at, only become more intense and abstract. In “Altar of Tammy”, the sky sinks to indigo and we know there will be another one of these days. Sukeena lets his guitar drone…reminding us of this truth. Like a forced smile, Lattimore swings her notes where our hearts want to go: there can’t only be darkness - there can’t only be smoke. We can’t be the only ones in this expanse, gaze fixed. There is an absence of ‘noise’ here, aside from the click of a pedal. Where did we go in 2020? What did we do? Why did we cry together, on the porch, looking out? On the days we couldn't go outside, West Kensington is proof there was music created and it felt like something real; and the jacaranda tree had a soundtrack to drop its leaves to. …Things had better work here, because here is where we run out of space. As we reach the end of the journey, “Garage Wine” arrives. Here is a glimpse of hope and a nod to the freedom we never saw coming. We traveled so far and have reached the edge only to realize that there was never a map. We were only using our gestures as directional guides, our hands moving toward one another in hi def. Using these earthly makings of strings and tubes, West Kensington takes us to that cosmic latitude of memory, and the ride is a healing one. As it goes with the passing comet, the songs are a reminder that we are here, making those vibrations into nothingness together. And it is brilliant. -Nicky Devine, January 2022-

The music of Jordan Reyes, the founder and owner of American Dreams Records, hones _QLM ZIVOQVO M`XTWZI\QWV[ \W I ÅVM [WVQK XWQV\ featuring synthesizers, trombone, lap steel, vocals layered as if a choir. Northern: Ashroud Is My Country synthesizes their approaches into a unique whole, combining Reyes’ propulsive investigations with Stokowy’s patient architecture, and creating an immersive space for listeners to explore. The pair worked together and apart. ¹5][QKITTa º ;\WSW_a [Ia[ ¹_M PIL \W ÅVL a common language.” One generative entry point was a poem by the Russian lyric poet Sergey Yesenin, which inspired the album’s subtitle. Reyes imagines a character “walking through a ghost town, seeing the remnants of something that was there before.” One could imagine this character using fragments of sound as building blocks, like a video game, to construct their environment in real time.

It’s not dissimilar to Stokowy’s production process. “My approach,” he says, “is to always create a sound texture—it’s always about texture—before recording, or in the moment WN ZMKWZLQVO 1 WN\MV ÅVL \PI\ _PMV aW] ][M materials or elements in a direct, physical way, you can come up with your own aesthetic that Q[ LMÅVML Ja \PM _MQOP\ Ja \PM [PIXM Ja \PM sounding qualities of an object. Feedback quivers over ambient textures, patient piano overtones decay in succession, acoustic and synthesized notes intertwine with one another. Though the music’s subtle dedication to its shape pulses throughout, it’s also slippery, open-ended, and invites active listening. Says Reyes, “when it seems like nothing’s happening, that’s when you need to pay more attention.” Stokowy elaborates: “When there is a standing tone, it gives the listener the chance to change perspective—where you have to, by listening, walk into it.” Northern may recall landscape music, but exists in a shroud of its making, a world all its own.

GENRE : Experimental / Electronic FILE UNDER : “M” for Matmos RELEASE DATE : May 20th, 2022 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK)

Matmos are one of the most prominent experimental electronic artists working today, crafting work by creating new conceptual frameworks & immediately testing those frameworks absolute limits. For Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer they’ve focused on another artist known, in large part, for doing the same. Bogusław Schaeffer was one of the first Polish artists creating electronic music. In step with American contemporaries like John Cage and Morton Feldman, he worked across the boundaries of classical composition, electronic experimentation, and radical theater in playfully form-breaking ways. Matmos are not the first ones to recognize the power of his catalog, from Solo (a 2008 documentary that garnered numerous international awards), to the annual Shaeffer’s Era Festival (most recently celebrated simultaneously in Warsaw and Los Angeles) his work continues to inspire. Regards.. however, was not just inspired by his work, Matmos were given access to the entirity of Schaeffer’s recorded works to use as they saw fit, commissioned by the prestigious Instytutu Adama Mickiewicza. They re-assembled & re-combined these recorded works with modern instrumentations in a way that only Matmos could, and what emerges is a composite portrait of the utopian 1960s Polish avant-garde and the contemporary dystopian cultural moment regarding each other across a distance. To facilitate the transcultural exchange that is the album’s essential premise, all song titles and liner-notes are provided in both English and Polish. The album was mastered by Rashad Becker and features illustration and design by acclaimed artist Robert Beatty (Tame Impala, Osees, Mdou Moctar). Like the anagrams of the letters of Bogusław Schaeffer’s name that were re-assembled to create some of the song titles, the album itself is a musical re-assemblage of component parts into possible but unforeseen new shapes. Adding harp from Irish harpist Úna Monaghan, erhu, viola and violin from Turkish multi-instrumentalist Ulas Kurugullu, and electronic processes from Baltimore instrument builder Will Schorre, and Horse Lords wunderkind Max Eilbacher, the resulting arrangements constantly toy with scale as they move from the close-mic-ing of ASMR and the intimacy of chamber music to the immensity of processed drones and oceanic field-recordings that close the album. Offering a “life review” of production styles, Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer builds temporary shelters out of the panoramic wreckage of modernist composition, sixties tape music, seventies dub, eighties industrial music, nineties postrock and dark ambient, 2000s era glitch fetishism, and contemporary post-everything collage sensibilities. “What’s astonishing is that Matmos’s music consistently transcends the concepts. Matmos albums can be sonically and academically challenging but are always sentimental, good-humored, and funky.” - PopMatters

GENRE : Alternative FILE UNDER : “P” Plankton Wat RELEASE DATE : May 20th, 2022 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING:

LISTEN HERE The music of Dewey Mahood is steadfast in its pursuit of transcendence. For the past two decades as Plankton Wat, Mahood has contoured his melodic guitar playing into wholly transfiguring pieces. His fluid compositions apply ethereal, elastic textures to grounded rhythmic grooves that recall the cosmic and the earthly in equal measure. Hidden Path is an album built on reflection and discovery, turning the thrill of exploring obscured passages into inward revelations. Originally presented as a limited cassette in 2017, and now presented on vinyl for the first time, remastered by Amy Dragon, Hidden Path is a distillation of Mahood’s musical practice as a way of life, a patient celebration of the unexpected, unhurried and exhilarating. The seeds of Hidden Path were planted when Mahood was completing his 2013 album Drifter’s Temple. Title track “Hidden Path” was composed alongside that album, but stood out from the rest as a new starting point. “I was thinking of escape, and finding calm,” says Mahood. “But after working on the new album for a while the title Hidden Path took on a new meaning for me. It became about my life, and the path that I’d chosen for myself.” Having grown up immersed in the communities of underground music, Hidden Path became a personal affirmation. “It’s about knowing yourself and following your heart and passion,” adds Mahood. “It is a political album in the sense of saying it’s okay to opt out of everything mainstream, you don’t need a great job, or much money at all to be happy and feel satisfaction in your life. My music and art are about rejecting anything that seems normal or status quo or of the modern capitalist world. This music is about life outside of all that.” Hidden Path is an expedition into the unknowable. Mahood’s lush compositions guide one from dreamy verdence to pensive ragas with the jubilence of walking a new path for the first time. The searching pieces are layered with a sense of mystery that reveals new details on each trek through their winding routes. Plankton Wat’s Hidden Path embodies the bliss in remaining inquisitive about worlds both exterior and interior to divine unearthed wonders.

GENRE : Ambient/Drone FILE UNDER : “P” Porras RELEASE DATE : May 20th, 2022 NO EXPORT TRACK LISTING:

LISTEN HERE Jon Porras draws a staggering array of atmospheres out of even the simplest instrumentation. Across his work as one-half of psych-drone duo Barn Owl and his solo releases, Porras welds monoliths and ether into propulsive music that is deeply felt. Arroyo, named for the Spanish word for “stream” in a nod to Porras’ heritage as a first generation ColombianJapanese American, drifts gently from one tributary to the next in unhurried contemplation and euphoria. The portentous weight and abrasive textures of Porras’ previous work give way to the trickle of richly detailed acoustic instruments slipping in and out of the fold. On Arroyo, Jon Porras evokes a distinct sense of resplendent anticipation and calm with a fathomless flow and softly gorgeous colors. For Porras, Arroyo became a rumination on simplicity and simple truths, a work of complete immersion and continuous motion where separate elements coalesce into an ever-changing whole. Porras spent the year leading up to 2020 living nomadically across Europe where he was able to soak in a deep appreciation for the effortless beauty of overgrown gardens, the basic principles of classical architecture and a more transient sensibility. The album was written and recorded in a time of even more change for Porras: after the birth of his daughter. Like a stream’s steady glide across bedrock that waxes and wanes with each gradual turn, the music of Arroyo exhibits a transportive stillness. The compositions take on a light, gaseous buoyancy as discreet drones swell with measured fluctuations and ripples of piano rest atop the surface. Arroyo borrows harmonic concepts from modal jazz to create a unique sense of ease and endlessness. Each of the four pieces on the album centers around a single suspended chord, a chord most commonly associated with devotional music which embodies a space between harmonic tension and resolution. Porras embellishes that liminality with arrangements that feel less like distinguishable layers of instruments and more like one undulating nebula of sound. In the past decade of Porras’ solo work, his music has grown increasingly engaged with elaborate synth textures and detailed processing. With Arroyo, Porras consciously takes a step back from those more intricate compositions and focuses on more organic, unadorned textures and places each sound with the same precision. Stark piano and guitar patiently hover over modest currents of Hammond organ and Yamaha DX7 with the sustain of each chord and phrase acting as a natural guide to the album’s subtle rhythm. The four pieces that comprise Arroyo each encompass their own idyllic channel, slowly weaving their way in and out of the album’s elegant stir. Porras’ reflections on simplified elements take shape in gorgeous arrangements that impart clarity amidst a tranquil mist. Arroyo is an album that unearths splendor in a unified feeling of space, serenity in perpetual renewal.

SATCHY BIOGRAPHY

A PRODUCT OF THE LOS ANGELES MUSIC SCENE, SATCHEL BROWN STARTED SATCHY IN 2016 AS A MONIKER FOR HIS EXPLORATIONS TO CREATE JAZZY, RICHLY-TEXTURED FUSION SONGS THAT HE COULDN’T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE. ALTHOUGH HE’D JOINED BANDS AND RECORDED MUSIC SINCE HE WAS 15, SATCHY BECAME OBSESSED WITH PRODUCING WHAT HE DESCRIBES AS “A GUMBO OF ALTERNATIVE MUSIC, A MIXTURE OF GENRES AND SOUNDS THAT COULD BE CALLED ‘ALTERNATIVE SOUL’.” IN HIS NEW LP, “WARM ABSENCE” FROM BABE CITY RECORDS, SATCHY REALIZES HIS VISION USING SOULFUL GUITARS AND BLENDED GENRES TO CREATE A HYPNOTIC SOUND ALL HIS OWN. RELEASE WARM ABSENCE

THE INSPIRATION FOR “WARM ABSENCE,” SAYS SATCHY, IS THE BLACK MUSIC, ART AND EXPRESSION HE FIRST DISCOVERED IN HIS HOME. “MY DAD IS A HUGE JAZZ HEAD AND WOULD ALWAYS BE PAINTING JAZZ ARTISTS OR DOING SOME JAZZ MUSICIAN’S ALBUM COVER,” HE RECALLS. “MEANWHILE, MY MOM WAS PLAYING CLASSIC SOUL ON THE RADIO.” SATCHY CLAIMS HIS INFLUENCES INCLUDE THE CLASSIC FUNK AND INNOVATIVE SONGS OF SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, PATRICE RUSHEN, GIL SCOTT HERON, A.R. KANE, ROY AYERS AND SUN RA. BUT HE ALSO TOOK INSPIRATION FROM BLACK FILMMAKERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS LIKE CHARLES BURNETT AND CARRIE MAE WEEMS. COLLECTING OLD GROOVE RECORDS FROM THE ‘70S, SATCHY FELL IN LOVE WITH THE SOUND OF LIVE MUSIC ON VINYL—“SOUND THAT’S NOT TOO CLEAN, BUT NOT TOO DIRTY, EITHER.” AND HE TRIED TO RECREATE THAT EFFECT WITH HIS OWN MUSIC, REJECTING THE SHARP-EDGED PERFECTIONS OF MODERN DIGITAL RECORDING.

Hexen Valley’s story began in summer 2021 when a new formation of Gnod came together in a co-op house at the 200-year-old Nutclough Tavern. As always, the line-up of the collective shifted and morphed to fit circumstances, and soon they embarked on intensive jamming that was eventually captured by Sam Greenwood in Hebden Bridge Underground studios. Inspiration struck not only from the chemistry of the four musicians in this confined room but all around - the band’s Paddy Shine cites the likes of shop noticeboard messages and pub conversations in Hebden as lyrical sparks; channeling by his reckoning the ‘valley fever’ that exists somewhere in the chasms and contrasts between the amazing light and vivacity of the valley summit and the comparative darkness of the towns below. Meanwhile, musical shapes were making themselves known seemingly of their own volition, from ‘Still Running’, which takes shape across a sonic hinterland between Daydream Nation-style kineticism and sludged-out aggression to ‘Bad Apple’ - an entirely spontaneous piece of potent and angular post-punk intensity. Perhaps most surprisingly of all, Lou Reed’s tour-bus favourite ‘Waves Of Fear’ is hammered out with fearsome gusto into a salvo of first-take catharsis and alchemy, fit to transcend all or any oppressive atmospheres that surround.Hexen Valley is the sound of a band whose fearsome intensity is only matched by their evolutionary drive. It’s Gnod at full power, and it’s a haunted place you might struggle to leave

REDEYE WORLDWIDE 505 ENO STREET, HILLSBOROUGH NC 27278, USA redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

The titular track, Cool Down The Dance, opens with a jittery fragmented drum pattern and wooshing stereo effects, lending a slightly disorienting feel to the intro before the well known vocal refrain leads into a monster amen drop. Deep subs, amen breaks and steely stabs roll out this dance floor banger. This is followed up with an absolute behemoth of a track. Horse Mout’ utilises an infamous vocal sample in a fresh way, building upon the intro with waves of dubwise effects before launching into a devastating onslaught. With support from scene stalwarts DJ Storm and Flight this one has been smashing up dance floors! The third track is a remix of Cool Down The Dance by Loxy, bringing his inimitable cool production style to the fore, stripping away the amen layers to reveal something for the darker corners of the dance. One for the head noders and the eyes down crew. The final track, Satta, is a nod to the dub of Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, and On U Sound. A slow boiling minimal intro that drops into the extreme minimalism of just a kick drum and sub bass line belies the swagger of the eventual drop. Swinging drums in an almost military pattern tumble and stagger around the core line of kick drum and sub bass, lending this an almost drunken air. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. “Horse Lords are the best new band in Baltimore and probably the world.” - Wye Oak singer Jenn Wasner

West African rhythms collide with just intonation guitars, art-

fire saxophone, minimalist grooves, and collaged zapdowns on Interventions, the powerful third full-length from Baltimore’s Horse Lords. The band’s Northern Spy debut is also the first Horse Lords album to explore the classic studio-as-weaponry strategies of yore, mapping the quartet’s raw Baltimore lightning onto the experimental musique concrète territory surveyed by elder heads like Faust and This Heat. Floating at the boundaries of composition and improvisation, electronics and performance, the underground and the vast improbable 21st century indie mainstream, Horse Lords exist in none of these places and all of them. More accurately, they exist on Interventions, the album you now hold in your proverbial hands, perhaps noticing the reflection of the imaginary room’s light reflecting on the LP cover, ready to cue up as you find yourself in the new beyond of tomorrow’s ecstasies and today’s Horse Lords.

“Baltimore’s Horse Lords bring a ferocity to the saxophone that you just don’t hear enough these days.” - Stereogum “Far from residing in some sort of rarefied liminal space between the guitar/bass/drums band format and an array of seemingly juxtaposed musical traditions (the avant-garde, minimalism, American folk, African percussion), Horse Lords stand upright with one hoof confidently planted in the thick of each of these camps and insist that they can have it all if they (and we) damn-well please.” - Tiny Mix Tapes “It’s that tensile feeling of daring — can they pull this off? — that lifts ‘Interventions’ above what it might look like on paper...” - The New York Times

“As a human being it’s really important to feel and express emotions whether happy or sad,” says Hiro Amamiya, the Teleman drummer whose solo guise is Hiro Ama. “I sometimes struggle to and so these are a collection of songs that explore different emotions. I want people to feel something through my music so I called this EP Animal Emotions.” Amamiya follows up on swiftly on 2020’s field recording-heavy EP Uncertainty with a record made in his bedroom and during a time of introspection to create something even more personal. “On Uncertainty I was using sounds from everywhere and whatever sounded good,” he says. “But for Animal Emotions I stuck with fewer instruments so the EP feels much more united. I also used more acoustic instruments as I sometimes feel electronic music in general lacks some organic and human elements so I tried to make this EP as organic as possible” However, buried beneath the warm electronics, gently pulsing grooves, infectious melodies and immersive soundscapes - that veer from disco strut to IDM via jazz-laced ambient - you’ll still find some field recordings. “You might not hear them as obviously as on my previous EP but field recordings are there,” he says. “I like them because it's very spontaneous and gives some human feel. It also adds some air to a recording which I quite like.” On the opener ‘Free Soul’ - which marries funk bass with subtle electronics and squelchy grooves - you can hear a voice sample of a woman from Southeast Asia singing a lullaby. “I wanted to make an up-tempo and danceable song so I can dance in my room during the lockdown. I got lost in Jazz music the last couple of years and it really changed and opened up the way I make music.” The moods, tones and emotions on the EP shift as seamlessly as the genres, never quite settling into one single place and constantly exploring and expanding into new musical terrain. A process mirrored by Amamiya’s own varied influences and tastes that were funnelled into the record, from film soundtracks to IDM to spiritual jazz such as November Cotton Flower by Marion Brown and Harvest by Pharoah Sanders.
