TORO Y MOI

UNDERNEATH THE PINE (10TH ANNIVERSARY)

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com

Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) rose to the fore of the music blogosphere in summer 2009 when he and a few peers made their hazy bedroom recordings the most talked-about sound of the season. Critics across the board took notice of the range of his compositions, and his debut album, Causers of This, showcased his ability to make elements of Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s R&B, and Stone’s Throw hip hop coalesce into a distinct sound that’s as suitable for a dancefloor as it is a pair of headphones.

CATALOG NUMBER: CAK59 STREET DATE: April 16, 2021 FILE UNDER: Alternative/Indie Rock DISCOUNT: 5% on LP until May 14, 2021 UNDERNEATH THE PINE LP (DESERT SUN SPLATTER VINYL) UPC 677517005943

When Chaz first signed to Carpark Records, the plan was to release two records in 2010 — one electronic and one with live instrumentation — and although it didn’t quite fit into the same calendar year as his debut, Underneath the Pine is that latter offering. This release sees him following the same creative urges to completely different ends. Having spent the year listening to film composers like Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, Bundick returned to his home in Columbia, the birthplace of many Toro tracks of yore, to bring his new ideas to fruition. The result of these sessions is an album evocative of R. Stevie Moore’s homespun ruminations, David Axelrod’s sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of his first record. Underneath the Pine announces a new phase for an artist whose talent defies classification. UNDERNEATH THE BULLET POINTS • 10-year anniversary edition available on colored vinyl for the first time • Pressed on Desert Sun vinyl • Includes breakout singles “New Beat” and “Still Sound” • Pitchfork Best New Music • Sync placements include Grand Theft Auto V, Magic Mike (“New Beat”) and Entourage (“Still Sound”) • Toro y Moi nominated for a 2021 Grammy for Best Dance Recording for “The Difference” with Flume

It is well recorded, features a superb Arkestral lineup, and successfully combines several of the styles in which Sun Ra orbited, from Saturnic jazz to astro-funk. Pressed on astro black vinyl at Third Man Pressing and packaged with new cover art with liner notes by Robert Campbell (author of The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra)! Although Astro Black was obviously professionally produced in a recording studio, no one is entirely sure where or when. The jacket of the original release gave the date as May 7, 1972, and the location as “El Saturn Studio,” Chicago. There never was such an animal as the El Saturn studio, in Chicago or in any other town. Yet it was routinely cited as the venue for Saturn/Impulse! Donna Lewis now in a minute

(Limited 25th Anniversary Orange Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: APRIL 16, 2021 Welsh-born singer-songwriter

Donna Lewis went from being to a music teacher to notching, with the single “I Love You Always Forever,” a song that spent nine weeks at #2 on the charts and got the most spins on radio… ever! And the accompanying album, 1996’s Now in a Minute, an utterly charming blend of disarmingly personal lyrics and dream pop production, went Top 40 as well (and scored another hit with “Without Love”). Now, on its 25th anniversary, and with the full cooperation of the artist herself, we at Real Gone Music are bringing Now in a Minute to LP for the first time with an orange vinyl pressing limited to 1000 copies! JOHN ZORN CHAOS MAGICK TZA CD 8380 Archival Series (S)($18.99) John Medeski, Brian Marsella, Matt Hollenberg, Kenny Grohowski. The Initiate * Corinthians I * The Servitor * St Augustine * Egregore * Crossing the Abyss * Liber M * Imp of the Perverse * Corinthians II Nothing is true—everything is permitted. Chaos Magick is a contemporary magical practice based on the ideas of Austin Osman Spare. Remarkably inclusive, it embraces and has influenced the work of William Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, Aleister Crowley and many others. Inspired by these magical practices, Zorn enlists the three members of his most powerful 21st century ensemble Simulacrum with special guest Brian Marsella on electric piano into this eclectic new quartet Chaos Magick. A fast moving, improvisational and intensely focused ensemble that draws upon classical, jazz, funk, improvisation, metal and more. This music is even crazier than Electric Masada—a must for all fans of the outer realms!

’Lothian Buses’ is an EP of genre collisions with Proc Fiskal amalgamating his twinkling, caffeinated grime sound with the rhythms and sounds of other genres, without ever overthinking it. To kick off, ‘Thurs Jung Yout’ is a kind of shoegaze drill with strings and gentle tones swelling and dissipating against busy drill beats. ‘Baguettes’ is a more classic Proc sound, a galloping rhythm against a sparse melody that was a quick fix up for a show that turned out well. ‘Choco Frito (Calamari)’ was influenced by the good life, DJing in Portugal in the sunshine and hearing Kuduro played out. The latticing drum patterns nod to the style, dropping into a sunny accordion chorus with a plucked guitar line. ‘Scarab Aloph’ is Proc's style compressed, full of micro-glitches, tight drum fills and incidental drop-outs across a pretty melody, while ‘HopeTak2’ is his percussive, breezy take on funky house with smiley melodic stabs. Finally, ‘Mullit Madollock’ takes the sonics of airy Bukem-style atmospheric jungle, an instantly recognisable inspiration that's not been as foregrounded in Proc’s work before, refitted and updated with grime-inspired melodic bass kicks.

A shuffled groove and chorus-tinged guitar set the scene of Clair de Lunarette’s lead single “Austin St.” Ephemeral synth fills out the contemplative, hook-heavy daydream led by vocalist Jackie Mendoza’s charming, resonant voice, which meshes expertly into the soft haze of colorful musicianship. While “Austin St.” doubtlessly throws it back to dream pop hits of the past, the song’s tight, booming production places it distinctly in the present, lending the tune a unique timelessness. The EP’s second single is the pulsing number “Lucky One,” a windows down indie pop cruiser. Guided by Mendoza's hazy, longing vocals, “Lucky One” features a driving synth bassline that, like “Austin St.,” simultaneously pulls listeners forward, while tugging on the heartstrings of

retro pop nostalgia. Clair de Lunarette’s final single “Messing” is a melancholy pop song that speaks to the universal experience of feeling insecure around someone you admire. This sensation’s emotional tumult translates through nuanced key changes and chord voicings that create a fertile sonic environment that opens up the song’s theme for broader interpretation. HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Artist: Sharkula x Mukqs Album: Take Caution On The Beach (click album artwork to stream) Label: Hausu Mountain Cat #: HAUSMO113 Format: CD, Cassette (C40). Releases: April 16, 2021

CD in a mini LP jacket

Tape - yellow shell

“In song as in conversation, his train of thought can be hard to keep up with, but some of his words are relatively easy to parse: you can always count on references to bowel movements, for instance, and often he mentions an experience that seems plausibly auto-biographical, such as drinking Red Stripe, eating at Chicago Diner, or crying in a steam room. With Sharkula as with Mukqs, you can only predict so much.”- Chicago Reader (Leor Galil - Cover Story) “Experimental label Hausu Mountain has gradually become one of the weirdest, most fun, and most positive parts of Chicago’s music scene, a trifecta of qualities that have also made veteran rapper Sharkula a beloved local artist for decades.” - Bandcamp (Miles Bowe) “If someone claims to be an expert on Chicago hip-hop but doesn’t know Sharkula, they should be legally required to move back to Naperville.” - VICE (Colin Joyce)

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX HAUSUMOUNTAIN @GMAIL.COM

Underground hip hop wild card Sharkula (born Brian Wharton) has carved himself into the grain of the Chicago music scene through 20 years of determined grinding. He records his free-associative verses over a wide spectrum of scene-sourced beats and has built a catalog of over 40 individual albums & EPs that he wraps in his own distinctive hand-drawn packaging. Over the course of the last several years, he has recorded music and toured with pioneering experimental rapper Kool Keith a.k.a. Dr. Octagon. Though the pandemic has curtailed Sharkula's typical routine of selling his music hand-to-hand across the streets and bars/venues of the city, and has limited his ability to directly interact with fans on the sidewalk or public transit, he continues his grind and keeps making connections from a safe social distance. Sharkula linked up with HausMo co-founder Max Allison a.k.a. Mukqs after a chance encounter at the immortal (and now shuttered) Burger King near Northwestern in Evanston, IL sometime around 2017, which led to the pair exchanging beats and verses and releasing their rst collaborative album Prune City (HAUSMO81) in 2019. Take Caution on the Beach, the duo’s second full-length album, further builds on their chemistry as an MC / producer team and stretches their joint practice to new heights of fractal, freewheeling hip-hop exploration. The album embodies a shared energy and determination that continues to color their collaboration with unpredictable details, keeping listeners guessing with surprising deviations from typical forms while rooting their music in some hallucinatory vision of old-school hip-hop. The stream-of-consciousness style in which Sharkula delivers his verses oats in a middle-ground between the disciplines of freestyle rap, surreal comedy, and free-form poetry. While he maintains vestiges of classic hip-hop tropes, and makes sure to oat within reliable rhyme patterns, Sharkula forsakes typical verse-chorus-verse song structures in favor of linear quasi-narratives that tend to streak off into bizarre scatological tangents. His dreamlike freestyles zig-zag between direct tales of his daily grind, to archaic cultural references to decades-old sports and TV, to more abstract commentary on the nature of life, to oblique wordplay, to a brand of unashamed irreverence colored by tales of pooping or masturbating. Within Sharkula’s haphazard ows, each of these worlds and more unite into a nuanced portrait of his day-to-day thoughts and activities that all boil down to the chaotic yet ultimately benevolent essence of his life. Sharkula approaches the spontaneous construction of a verse from the perspective of an improviser, and recorded every track that appears on Take Caution on the Beach as a single unbroken vocal take. This workow aligns him with many artists in the Hausu Mountain discography who showcase recordings focused around improvised ourishes and live-in-the-studio performances. The verses that ll Take Caution on the Beach, however, represent a new peak for Sharkula in terms of the insight and bizarre humor he brings to each track, as well as a sharpened clarity of verbal delivery. Mukqs’s production on Take Caution on the Beach keeps one foot in the beat architectures and regimented structures of classic boom-bap hip hop, while continuing his exploration of the experimental potential of 16-bit video game music and textural noise sculpting. His beats draws major inuence from the horror score synths and massive basslines of the universe that surrounds Three 6 Maa, along with the clipped samples and tight drum patterns of DJ Premier. Any given Mukqs beat delivers a bone-thick bassline and a loping drum pattern, but juxtaposes those elements against a web of one-off electronic noise bursts, all sourced from his arsenal of hardware synths. Although the specter of the COVID-19 pandemic rears its head in moments of Sharkula’s freestyle verses — “I’m in the sauna / at the gym / it’s closed / pandemic / that sucks” —his overall message remains grounded in positivity and hope for some return to his longstanding lifestyle of deep integration into the Chicago scene and direct social connection. His words speak to the enduring spirit of the artist within the often cruel and oppressive environment of contemporary Chicago, but he never dwells on the negative aspects of his daily lifestyle. Instead, Sharkula makes a case for the restorative properties of one’s rich inner life in the face of turmoil: that our most seemingly aberrant ideas can fuel our curiosity and creativity, and our positive attitudes can shine a light to combat any existential darkness that bears down on us.

BYARD LANCASTER - MY PURE JOY "From A Love Supreme to The Sex Machine!" The personal musical mantra of the late Philadelphia reedman Byard Lancaster informed an open-minded and varied lifetime in jazz. Strut presents one of Lancaster’s lesser known classics, ‘My Pure Joy’, recorded in 1992 for Black Fire.

Lancaster had initially cut his musical teeth with the avant-garde on New York’s Lower East Side in the 1960s (famously on sessions with pianist Dave Burrell and drummer Sunny Murray) and in Paris during the ‘70s after an appearance at the Actuel festival but, throughout his career, his path was built around community engagement, positivity and “the Philly jazz sound, Germantown style.” He became an ambassador for the music of the City Of Brotherly Love, starting his own Dogtown label, helping launch the Philly Jazz imprint and campaigning tirelessly to improve the circumstances of the city’s street musicians. Lancaster’s sessions for Black Fire were planned following a gig at Caverns Jazz Club in Washington DC. “Jimmy Gray of Black Fire and I originally met during the ‘riotous blisters’ of the late Sixties there,” explained Lancaster. “We became the best of friends.” Backed by a band of Philly musicians including percussionist Keno Speller and Baba Robert Crowder (drummer for Olatunji and Art Blakey), the album also featured the Drummers From Ibadan led by Tunde Kuboye, another influential figure dedicated to community jazz with whom Lancaster had bonded while teaching in Lagos. The result was a free-flowing set of spirituality and positivity, built around full band groove workouts, solo pieces and heavy African roots. “We had big fun documenting this music,” remembered Lancaster. The message of the album remains as relevant today as ever, “I dedicate this album to all African Americans in the USA. To the youth, I ask ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?’” Originally delayed by three years because of cashflow issues within Black Fire, ‘My Pure Joy’ eventually surfaced as one of the label’s final CD releases in 1995.

JuJu - Live at 131 Prince St Strut continue their in-depth archive reissues from the Black Fire label with a definitive edition of JuJu’s ‘Live At 131 Prince Street’,recorded in 1973 at Ornette Coleman’s gallery in New York and featuring a previously unheard recording of the Pharoah Sanders composition "Thembi". After forming in San Francisco while working on the Marvin X theatre piece ‘The Resurrection of the Dead’, JuJu began to hone their uncompromising fusion of Afro-Latin rhythms with free and spiritual jazz before signing to Strata-East for the ‘A Message From Mozambique’ album in 1972. “We moved to New York and became part of the avant-garde community on the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village,” remembers bandleader Plunky Branch. Following a high profile live show at the Lincoln Center, Ornette Coleman invited JuJu to his gallery and loft at 131 Prince Street to perform there and to stay on while he left on tour. “That was life-changing for us,” continues Plunky.“It was fabulous. The recordings you hear on this album are in close proximity to each other, maybe across one day or a weekend at the gallery.”Alongside tracks written by the JuJu band members, like the 5/4 tempo ‘At Least We Have A Horizon Now’, they play choice covers from their peers. Plunky explains, “‘Thembi’ is a Pharoah Sanders piece which he wrote for his wife in 1971 and it’s one of my favourite pieces by him. ‘Azucar Pa Ti’ was written by Eddie Palmieri; we loved him too and enjoyed Latin music in general. Here we play ‘Mozambique’, based on an Afro-Cuban rhythm and we regularly played that for 10 minutes before morphing into ‘Azucar’. ‘Out Of This World’, written by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen, was inspired by John Coltrane who recorded a version of it on his ‘Coltrane’ album in ’62.” JuJu’s ‘Live At 131 Prince Street’ is out on Strut on 12th February 2021 on 2LP and 1CD. Remastered by The Carvery from the original reel to reel tapes and including full sleeve notes based around a new interview with bandleader James “Plunky” Branch

ELECTRIC JALABA - EL HAL / THE FEELING Electric Jalaba comprises six accomplished musicians with an empathy that feels telepathic and a groove that immerses. In Arabic, the mother tongue of Moroccan-born singer and guimbri player Simo Lagnawi, a leading practitioner of Gnawa music in Britain, they call this indefinable quality, “El Hal” – “The feeling”. “It’s the feeling that comes when we’re playing and totally forgetting where we are,” says producer and bassist Olly Keen. “The feeling of being grabbed by the music and lost in the groove.” ‘El Hal / The Feeling’ is the new third album from Electric Jalaba and their first release in five years. It’s a multi-faceted work that finds the band tighter than ever, deploying a vast cache of influences across nine tracks improvised and developed in their south London studio then deftly produced by Keen. Some tracks pay homage to the origins of Gnawa music, whose repertoire of Arabic-language praise songs contains remnants of West African dialects – Bambara from Mali, Fulani and Hausa from the Sahel region – that point to a centuries-old migration. “The trance-inducing effect of Gnawa was what hit us first. It was visceral, heart stopping,” continues Olly, whose siblings – producer / keys player Henry Keen, guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Nathaniel Keen and singer / multi-instrumentalist Barnaby Keen – make up Electric Jalaba alongside revered Anglo-Italian kit drummer Dave De Rose and Simo on vocals, krakeb and guimbri. “Simo selected the chant from the traditional song suites and, as a band, we extended these short pieces of ceremonial music and experimented with sound and structure,” explains Olly. Tracks include the Juno-led dancefloor single ‘Cubaili Ba’, ‘Agia Hausa’, a multi-layered wig-out that partly takes its inspiration from Senegal’s fiercely percussive mbalax rhythms and ‘Daimla’, a gloriously dubby ode to Allah and iconic maalems including the late Mahmoud Guinea. “There’s a very strong rhythmic element within the band but because of our different perspectives but the melodic components are really unique as well,” says Henry. That feeling of being outside of yourself but totally within yourself at the same time… That’s what all of us, collectively, are striving for.”

N U B I YA N T W I S T – F R E E D O M F A B L E S Nubiyan Twist return with their brand new album ‘Freedom Fables’ on Strut on 5th February, the follow-up to the acclaimed ‘Jungle Run’ from Spring 2019. Woven around soul searching, cautionary tales and parables for modern life, the new album is the most accomplished yet by the Leeds / London collective, effortlessly fusing different soul, jazz and global styles with great musicianship and lyrics. “Freedom Fables reflects on the power of narratives. Each vocalist on this record explores their own memoirs, a freedom of expression underpinning our belief that music is the ultimate narrative for unity,” explains Tom Excell. “The record references a lot of music that we all loved during our formative years; you can hear touches of broken beat, blunted hip hop, highlife, Latin, jazz and UK soul running through the tracks.” The album is also packed full with illustrious guest appearances: regular collaborator Cherise features on the brilliant ‘Tittle Tattle’, calling out gossip through acerbic nursery rhyming, the loping ‘Flow’ dealing with the ebb and flow of anxiety and the epic Brazilian jazz workout, ‘Keeper’; UK jazz saxman Soweto Kinch brings a burning alto solo and rhymes to the determined ‘Buckle Up’ alongside the band’s own vocalist Nick Richards as the track aims to “find the door to peace” among life’s challenges. “Soweto is a trailblazer of the UK scene both as an alto player and as a rapper with a unique flow and important lyricism,” reflects Tom Excell. “It was really important for us to invite him to contribute to the album.” Richards continues the “dust yourself off and find hope” theme on the rousing ‘Wipe Away Tears’; Ghanaian great Pat Thomas voices a gorgeous Accra meets London highlife jam; massive new vocal talent Ria Moran (a contemporary from the band’s time at Leeds College Of Music) steps up on the sensual ‘Morning Light’ tackling delicate complexities of the heart and long time friend of the band, KOG, brings his trademark full strength Afro dancefloor energy. Shaping up to be a modern classic and a priority for Strut in 2021, ‘Freedom Fables’ is set to catapult Nubiyan Twist even further into the limelight and cement their position as one of the UK’s leading soulful collectives of the current generation. The album was produced by Tom Excell at Henwood Studios in Oxfordshire and mixed by Oli Barton Wood and Tom Excell at The Premises. Artwork comes courtesy of Emma Rodriguez aka Mooncrab. The band will be touring across the UK in February 2021.

33 1/3 years after its first release Piranha Records reissues the groundbreaking Stella Chiweshe international debut Ambuya! („Grandmother“) on quality 180g vinyl, 102% remastered from analog tapes, together with a bonus John Peel session from 1988. From the beginning Stella had to stand up against white suprematists, missionaries and male hegomany in her motherland Zimbabwe to play the Mbira. When she went on to spread the message of the Mbira internationally, she crossed even more borders. With her album Ambuya? the Mbira finally went electric and combined the spiritual with the popular in a creative exchange with British world indie legend 3 Mustaphas 3. 3 Mustaphas 3 mastermind Hijaz Mustapha, who produced the album, remembers: 1987. The call came from Berlin: Mustaphas, meet your Ambuya. At that time the young 3 Mustaphas 3 were playing many stages and many songs, mixing, matching, mutating. We had the protection of the innocent, and the confidence of everything that we didn’t know. Stella was gracious enough to invite us to her cosmos. This was her international recording debut, the premier production of Piranha Records and perhaps my first production job where I had actually dared to take a named production credit. They seemed to trust me. I tried to approach it in a serious way. In retrospect, this was a bold request, and a first for all of us. I don’t know how many voice-mbira-dzavadzimu-marimba-hosho-electric-bass-and-drums albums had been recorded up to that point, but it was certainly the first one that any of us had tried. The good thing about doing these first leaps into new air is that no-one can say ‘that’s not how you do it’. OK, so let’s get ready. For many, now, there is digital access to collaborative global episodes; on-line, sure sure, and bravo to the new creative frontiers and side ears. For us - trying to meet in those days - this was a real-time, analogue sonic sensory adventure, all parties willing to see what kind of soundwork would come out, if we went in with the right attitude. No YouTube references, no digital access to recorded time in all directions; just the classic ‘Rolling!’ and off we roll, and the recording tape catches the excited electrical particles onto its welcoming matrix. The classic voice of the producer in the headphones ‘Fantastic! Do it again!’ Most regular recording sessions love the clean, and focus on the enemy: buzzing. What’s that buzz? Where’s that buzz? Great take, damn, there’s a buzz. Oh man. Can we find that buzz? Enter Stella, queen buzz-bringer. Buzzes of mbiras, marimbas, ancestral voices singing and responding through the resonators and bottle-cap zzzzzzz-harmonic enhancers. Ancestor amplifiers. We need the buzz-aesthetic. Audacious to try, lovely to be asked, honoured to participate, proud that it is with you again in a new millenium. Buzzes straight to your hearts. Much respect now - as then - to Stella, Virginia, Leonard, Samson, Sabah Habas and Houzam. Time spins like an album, our mbira-meetstapha kick-off of 1987 still lives and rotates with Piranha Records in 2021. Ambuya? Ambuya!

GANG OF FOUR:

ENTERTAINMENT! & SOLID GOLD REISSUES

Gang of Four was formed in Leeds in 1976 by bassist Dave Allen, drummer Hugo Burnham, guitarist Andy Gill, and singer Jon King. The band pioneered a style of music that inverted punk’s blunt and explosive energies — favoring tense rhythms, percussive guitars, and lyrics that traded in Marxist theory and situationism. They put every element of the traditional “rock band” format to question, from notions of harmony and rhythm to presentation and performance. This original lineup of the band released two monumental albums, Entertainment! (1979) and Solid Gold (1981). A third, Songs of the Free (1982), was recorded with bassist Sara Lee replacing Dave Allen. After Songs Of The Free, Burnham departed the band and Andy Gill and Jon King continued on to release Hard in 1983. After this release, the band broke up. In 2004, the original quartet reformed for tour dates and released Return The Gift (2005). Gill’s untimely death in February 2020 was cause for many to once again re-examine the group’s catalog and the legacy of these early releases was widely cited. Not only did Gang of Four’s music speak to the generation of musicians, activists, writers, and visual artists that emerged in the group’s immediate wake, but the generation after that. And the generation after that, even. In the last few years, their songs have continued to resonate with and been sampled by artists far afield from “post-punk,” including Run the Jewels (“The Ground Below”) and Frank Ocean (“Futura Free”). Gang of Four’s legacy cannot be overstated. In addition to the release of our stunning 77-81 box set, we are happy to reissue Entertainment! and Solid Gold individually on LP and CD. The albums have both been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road, with supervision by Jon King. ENTERTAINMENT! A1. Ether A2. Natural’s Not In It A3. Not Great Men A4. “A SHORT ATTENTION SPAN EXTRAVAGANZA FOR THE POSTFUTURE GENERATION.” Screen Slate OVERVIEW Crestone is the debut feature film written, produced and directed by Marnie Ellen Hertzler. The film will be released on PVOD on February 16, 2021. Set in the desert of Crestone, Colorado over the course of eight days, Crestone follows a group of SoundCloud rappers who live in solitude, growing weed and making music for the internet. When an old friend arrives to make a movie, reality and fiction begin to blur. The film is scored by Animal Collective, one of the 21st century's definitive experimental acts. Brian “Geologist” Weitz and Josh “Deakin” Dibb of Animal Collective on scoring the film:

"Living in the Sonoran Desert in the early 00’s had a long-lasting and profound effect on me, especially after multiple years in New York City. Since then I’ve had a vague idea for a sound that would reflect that experience, but no project ever led me to it. The images, sounds, stories, and structures created and documented in “Crestone” finally did. Many thanks to Marnie, her crew, Dead God, the land, and as always, my brother Josh for the inspiration and opportunity to work on this project." - Brian "I met Marnie when I lived in New Orleans for a brief time in 2015 and we quickly became friends. When she approached me about scoring “Crestone” I was really excited about it. It felt really natural to ask Brian to team up on this project since we had already been collaborating on a handful of things as a duo in the previous year or so. Having wanted to score a movie for many years, this was an ideal first project to explore the process. For me, the initial phase of developing the ideas for this was just to pull up a scene and sit down at my piano and improvise to the energy I interpreted. In many cases this initial pass was recorded and used for the final composition. This process of using the images, characters, editing and practical sound as a sort of sheet music to play to was really freeing and inspiring." - Josh

FIELD MUSIC FLAT WHITE MOON STREET DATE: 23 APRIL 2021 "We want to make people feel good about things that we feel terrible about." says David Brewis, who has co-led the band Field Music with his brother Peter since 2004. It's a statement which seems particularly fitting to their latest album, Flat White Moon released on 23 April via Memphis Industries.

Track listing 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Orion From The Street Do Me A Favour Not When You're In Love Out of the Frame When You Last Heard From Linda No Pressure In This City I'm The One Who Wants To Be With You 9. Meant To Be 10. Invisible Days 11. The Curtained Room 12. You Get Better

By March 2020, recording had already begun for most of the album's tracks and, with touring for Making A New World winding down, Peter and David were ready to plough on and finish the record. The playfulness that’s evident in much of Flat White Moon's music became a way to offset the darkness and the sadness of many of the lyrics. Much of the album is plainly about loss and grief, and also about the guilt and isolation which comes with that. Those personal upheavals are apparent on songs like Out of the Frame, where the loss of a loved one is felt more deeply because they can't be found in photographs and compounded by the suspicion that you caused their absence, or on When You Last Heard From a Linda, which details the confusion of being unable to penetrate a best friend's loneliness in the darkest of circumstances.

Sporadic sessions for the album began in late 2019 at the pair's studio in Sunderland, slotted between rehearsals and touring. The initial recordings pushed a looser performance aspect to the fore, inspired by some of their very first musical loves; Free, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles; old tapes and LPs pilfered from their parents' shelves. But a balance between performance and construction has always been an essential part of Field Music.

Some songs are more impressionistic. Orion From The Streets combines Studio Ghibli, a documentary about Cary Grant and an excess of wine to become a hallucinogenic treatise on memory and guilt.. Others, such as Not When You're In Love, are more descriptive. Here, the narrator guides us through slideprojected scenes, questioning the ideas and semantics of 'love' as well the reliability of his own memory. For the most part, the album has fewer explicitly political themes than previous records, though there is No Pressure, about a political class who feel no obligation to take responsibility if they can finagle a narrative instead. And there's I'm The One Who Wants To Be With You which skirts its way around toxic masculinity through teenage renditions of soft-rock balladry. On Flat White Moon Field Music take on the challenge of representing negative emotions in a way that doesn't dilute or obscure them but which can still uplift. The result is a generous record of bounteous musical ideas, in many ways Field Music's most immediately gratifying to date.

From the sneering eternity of ‘All Along the Uxbridge Road,’to the Hammond Organ smeared ‘Bruce Grove Bullies’-- the songs will have you reaching for your London A to Z and trying your hardest not to spill your pint. Finding a new home on Partisan Records, Speed Kills has been remastered at West London’s Metropolis Studios and features a previously unreleased track ‘Union Dues’. SONIC BOOM ALMOST NOTHING IS NEARLY ENOUGH

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com

To Sonic Boom’s Pete Kember, re-imagining the past can lead to ways forward on life’s natural, interconnected path. In April of 2020, he released his first album in over 20 years called All Things Being Equal, a lush and psychedelic record full of interwoven synthesizers and droning vocal melodies, concerned with the state of humanity and the natural world. An entire year later, Kember has re-imagined his last release and created an album of self-remixed tracks called Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough, inspired by the spirit of late 70s, early 80s records by artists like Kraftwerk, Blondie and Eddy Grant. His new album is hypnotic and moody, holding onto the existential framework of the original, but exposes a fresh, beating realm of possibility. In his last album, All Things Being Equal, Kember told regenerative stories backwards and forwards as he explored dichotomies zen and fearsome, reverential of his analog toolkit and protective of the plants and trees that support our lives. His work is always complex, both in its instrumentation built using modular synthesizers, and with his attempts to observe the many variables that exist in the universe that are intrinsically connected. Kember takes his existential and musical curiosity even further in Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough, explaining “how we interact now is especially critical.” Written while the world endures many environmental and human crises, the album is both a balm and a reminder to nurture our own relationships, both natural and personal.

TRACKLIST 1. Just Imagine - Remix 2. On a Summer’s Day - Remix 3. Tick Tock - Remix 4. Things Like This (A Little Bit Deeper) - Remix 5. I Can See Light Bend - Remix 6. Tawkin Tekno - Remix 7. Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough - Remix 8. Make It About (The Way That You Live) - Remix

Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough includes remixes of six tracks from All Things Being Equal and two tracks previously released exclusively in Japan. The album opens just like the original, with “Just Imagine” in its remixed form. The modular synthesizer at its foundation sounds familiar, but as the song progresses it branches out into various veins of sparkling embellishments and deep humming to truly expand the world that the song attempts to envision. On the albums’ titular track “Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough,” Kember’s instrumentation mirrors the interactions he wishes to inspire; synthesizers responding and building on one another, a conversation of sorts that the human world currently seems to avoid.

The result is a re-textured and re-colored new set of songs, emphasizing Sonic Boom’s ability to make a sonically expansive album feel distinctly impactful for anyone who listens closely.

HIGHLIGHTS “...Philly lofi band King Azaz’s downtempo minimalist punk rock defies its namesake by cutting right to the chase. Their music is skin and bones, taut and unadorned.” - Afropunk.com

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Philly dynamic duo King Azaz is an explosion of punk catharsis, a guitar-and-drum ensemble that crawls through the wreckage and debris of the aftermath of Generation X lethargy colliding with millennial frustrations of a future lost. Christo (gutiar/vox) and Sarah (drums) beat a path to the still-beating, still rebellious, still longing hearts of burnouts, cynics, and jaded, desperate punks clamoring for sonic guidance-- a generation that missed out on the open-carry Doc Martens and flannel nihilism of the no-future, a generation that had to raise itself on mall emo and Avril Lavine mp3s. If their past records, Tunnels and Spirit Mundi were explorations in and heavy homages to ‘90’s grunge and noise-rock, with Forever Green the band has simultaneously expanded (on songs like “Paulie”, with its lulling rhythmic dreaminess) and imploded (with tracks like “Let Yourself Out”, a caustic, blazing siren-wail of a post-punk burner) spiky haired and wide-eyed ideas.

SIMON GOFF VALE ALBUM OUT: APRIL 23RD 2021

a division of !K7 Music

Behind the finest and most moving pieces of contemporary-classical music lie deeply personal and poignant stories, and Simon Goff’s new album Vale is no exception. The British violinist and composer’s dazzling exploration of the interface between violin and technology and between the poles of intimacy and grandeur, as rich and deep and wide as the landscape that lies its heart, named after the Vale of York where Goff grew up. The album encapsulates not just a landscape but a place in time and an identity forged through youth and adulthood, all viewed from his current base in Berlin. Goff’s artistic project is one which has been informed by his previous collaborations as both a performer and recording engineer, performing with artists such as Thor Harris (Swans, Amanda Palmer) and Federico Albanese, playing in concert halls across Europe. On his very first day working at the legendary Vox-Ton studios, Goff was introduced to Adam Wiltzie (half of the venerated post-classical/ ambient duo Stars Of The Lid/A Winged Victory for the Sullen), and over the next two years, he worked with post-classical and post-rock visionaries such as the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hildur Guðnadóttir (notably on the film

soundtracks for Chernobyl and Joker), Dustin O'Halloran and Yair Elazar Glotman. When conceptualising and setting his own parameter for his debut album “Vale”, he had all studio tools at his disposal, but he gave himself, “the task of only using the violin as the starting point for composition.” At Vox-Ton, with co-producer/mixer Sam Slater (Chernobyl, The Joker), Goff combined analogue purity with processed, looped and layered treatments, with Jóhannsson’s words in his mind: “music where the electronic and acoustic sounds blend seamlessly,” - “I don’t consider I achieved that, but it helped me to discover my own path forward”. He also respected the role of bass guitar and rhythm in his DNA, and decided to embellish the completed tracks with synth bass, double bass (played by Yair Elazar Glotman) and percussion (by Andrea Belfi),” sounds that would add some life,” he explains. “I wanted to follow the music and not be dogmatic about it.” Simon Goff has poured everything into Vale: from personal and musical memories to lessons learnt. There’s a lot of psychological therapeutic catharsis in this record.”

HIGHLIGHTS • First beat oriented Gimmik full-length in over 15 years.

Cloudwalker was entirely written and produced between March and November 2020. The album is a welcome return of Martin Haidinger's more notable style after the floating tranquility of the ambient/drone series of albums like Entre Les Chambres and Deux Nouvelles. What's contained within Cloudwalker mirrors its name. Haidinger takes Gimmik on a somewhat weightless journey above the clouds floating between the electronic music he nurtured in the Toytronic years. These new tracks represent a production concept where Martin saw himself more like a witness of a moving organism than a planning architect. This approach gave the music the space to evolve more freely, like clouds. It broadened the emotional sound pallet of Gimmik's style without denying its heritage. The same philosophy was implemented when choosing the production tools, representing technology from 1985 to 2019, including field recording and manipulated real instruments. The emphasis is clearly on songwriting rather than nano edits and ball bearings down stairs beats. The result is clean melodic electronica, bouncy Electro, engaging maternal downtempo, and expertly crafted modular synthesis. Every detail has the technical Haidinger approach with a strong focus on telling a story, leaving a lot of emotional space for the imagination of the listener. Cloudwalker is a confident and warm return to form from an artist that was sorely missed in his time away.

Sindy, the project of Swedish musician Tom Serner, only released its acclaimed debut EP last summer, and is now set to release its debut LP HORROR HEAD, co-produced with Jacob Haage (El Perro Del Mar, HOLY etc). He’d always known that he wanted this first album under his Sindy moniker to be a love letter to the nineties influences he grew up with, continuing in the vein of Hits for Kids, last year’s thrilling five-track EP. Now, he had the opportunity to take deep dives in the catalogues of cornerstones of the decade’s alt-rock pantheon, starting first with Radiohead, charting their progression from post-grunge to experimental electronica. With that foundation laid, he turned to shoegaze, ob-sessing over My Bloody Valentine: “I was inspired by the textural approach to music over melo-dy, even though MBV have both - Bilinda Butcher’s soft, ethereal vocals and Kevin’s weirdo gui-tar tunings.” As the process wore on, he explored the more eclectic side of the Sonic Youth oeu-vre, reappraised Sebadoh’s legendary III, and found a kindred spirit in Daniel Johnston, who’s lyricism chimed with Serner’s desire to imbue his music with a naiveté brought on by freedom of thought. The fruits of this musical odyssey are in the nine tracks of HORROR HEAD, which plays like a pae-an to the stranger side of nineties alternative. Written at home in Stockholm and recorded in con-junction with co-producer Jacob Haage at Studio Ging Ging, the album is a technicolor realisation of Serner’s vision; it filters his influences through a dream pop lens, recasting a decade’s worth of indie rock in the mould of Cocteau Twins. Stylistically, it twists and turns through a slalom of fresh ideas, from the airy prettiness of ‘Big Scare’ and the driv-ing electropop of ‘Phantom Limb’. At the centre of it all are Serner’s breathy vocals - think an off-kilter Elliott Smith, delivering what Serner himself describes as “seriously deranged four-chord songs”. PNKSLM Recordings P.O.
