Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Cory Rayborn at Three Lobed Recordings Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? The psychedelic/outsider underground is where TLR spends most of its time with another solid period of time in the realm of solo guitar. Head music? Out music? All of these labels fit. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When Three Lobed started the goal was to simply put out a record for one of my all-time favorite bands. A relatively low hurdle to clear, sure, but one that seems insurmountable when you’re on the other side of the divide. My passion for music and everything that surrounds it is – and has consistently historically been – pretty all-consuming so the fun of the label grew over time. With that, release schedules, edition sizes and more have picked up. Telling me ten years ago, let alone twenty, that the record would occupy the part of my life that it does now would seem totally unbelievable. How did you personally get started in the music industry? Music was the obvious choice for me in some ways, less so in others. Starting in early middle school I became obsessed with music. Constantly listening, learning – it was a central element of life. I wasn’t the musical sort myself so I gravitated towards various DIY activities throughout college – booking, taping, web work (after all, I was in college in the web’s nascent days of 1994-1998) and the like. Putting out a record was the natural extension of these obsessions. If I hated it, I’d just move on to the next thing. If it was fun I’d keep doing it. It’ll be twenty-two years later this year and it has constantly provided me with a lot of fun. When and where did the label begin? In the summer of 2000 I was ready to put out my first (and, for all I knew at that point in time, only) title. I had spoken with my good friends in the Philly psych mainstays Bardo Pond and they were down with me putting a 10” out for them. I started the ball rolling early that summer only to have the parts all come together about 10 days before I started law school orientation (in Chapel Hill, NC). Whoops. A quick scramble over those few days got everything assembled and shipped out of my apartment with the final few initial orders getting out the door on my second day of orientation. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Three Lobed gets its name from one of the otherworldly Old Ones from the strange fiction of H.P. Lovecraft. (It goes without saying that TLR is not down with the darker human side of HPL.) How has the label changed since it started? How hasn’t it! Despite my first release being a 10”, CDs were the main name of the game for the label for the first several years and digital didn’t exist for a goodly period into the label but for low-res mp3s. TLR switched over to primarily being a vinyl label well in advance of the current trend. That said, it has constantly been an effort to do what felt most fun and true, definitions that have changed over the last couple of decades. Beyond formats, there are a lot of ways in which the label has remained the same and true to the original roots. I work a lot with friends and folks who I have known for a long period of time. Hell, there are multiple artists with five or more releases in the catalog and a few with around ten titles. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Three Lobed is a bit of an odd setup in that it is entirely a one-man operation, me (Cory Rayborn)! I outsource stuff like design work and mastering but beyond that if you need anything – general correspondence, A&R, manufacturing coordination, fulfillment, etc. – you’re working with me. I’m probably a glutton for punishment but it’s the way that I try to keep the label consistent with my vision for the titles, look, feel, etc. Or maybe I just have a hard time letting go of anything? Ha. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? It won’t come as a surprise to say supply chain issues and the throttling of the vinyl manufacturing industry. Couple those two factors with unprecedented demand and it was hard to ever get a read on what to do. Overorder while you have the time on the press and possible choke on extra stock? Underorder and wait six plus months for a restock? No good answer in the bunch *other than* the fact that folks were (and still are) buying records hand over fist. Hard to complain about that part, right? Good problems to have in the big picture. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? While I have never lived in Philadelphia I have long been drawn to the people from our scene who live or hailed at some point from there. How much of this is due to the original label origins with Philly heroes Bardo Pond? Who truly knows to that end but I do know that there are over thirty titles with Philly ties in the TLR catalog. North Carolina, where I have lived my whole life, probably doesn’t even have ten. Life can be unexpected sometimes, you know?

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? While it is next to impossible to pick between one’s children, sometimes you have to. It isn’t a secret that I have a deep, passionate connection with the Gunn-Truscinski Duo’s “Ocean Parkway” album from 2012. I go deep with everything Steve Gunn touches but the Duo records with John Truscinski just take me somewhere special. The title track on this one is so joyous, deep and giving. I’ll listen anytime. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? For a long time I didn’t feel the need to do any sort of color or variant releases with TLR titles. Then I started to let color vinyl be something that could pop up from time to time for reissues to differentiate them from the original pressings. Somewhere along the line I eventually relented to and started putting some titles out in color variants. Never anything too crazy here – I don’t want the LP aesthetics to ever distract from the overall experience with the actual music contained within. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? I’ve generally been opposed to cassettes on the whole and never saw it as a business sector to get into. That said, my next release is one where the band (Sonic Youth) really wanted to do a cassette so we did one. It has done well (it is a Sonic Youth release, after all), *but* I don’t think it is an indication of the TLR future as much as a one off. I also know better than to never say “never”. How would you describe the average fan of the label? I can honestly say that I have some of **the** best fans out there. Over time I consistently find them enthusiastic, searching, loyal, open to new things and kind. I am fortunate to count several folks who I met through the guise of buying records from TLR who have become deep and true friends. It is one of the places where being a one man operation is so rewarding as I have direct interactions with so many folks ranging from the people who have snagged every single title from me from title one to the present to folks I consistently see at shows. Those interactions make all of the hard work rewarding. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Exceptionally important. No industry or part of life is exempt from the need to get things right. We collectively only get one shot at this so we have to do it properly. I’m constantly trying to nibble around the edges and reduce as much waste and impact as possible from the process but there’s so much more to do. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Hands down I would say divided attention. It gets all of us in every phase of life – too many things calling at all of us from too many directions all of the time. In particular with respect to the music industry, there are so many things calling for everyone’s time, let alone the sheer number of releases that come out weekly. How do you stand out in a crowd? How do you find your audience? How do you hold attention in a world where streaming is so prevalent? Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Eternal love to Chaz’s Bull City Records, Harvest Records, Record Grouch, Deadly Wax and everyone out there in the trenches.

RÜFÜS DU SOL Bloom Original Release Date: January 22, 2016 RÜFÜS DU SOL’s now classic sophomore album Bloom, back in stock after multiple sold out pressings. Available on limited edition translucent pink vinyl (exclusive to indie retail) and black vinyl for the first time to North America retail. Hailing from Sydney, Australia and formed in 2010, RÜFÜS DU SOL (Jon George, James Hunt and Tyrone Lindqvist) came together around a shared passion for live-electronic icons like Chemical Brothers and Röyksopp. It is this fusion of instrumentative sensibilities and thoughtful dance production that became the bedrock for the sound that would propel the trio from the continent to the global stage. Bloom picks up right where their debut album Atlas left off, with dreamy vocals, moody synths and driving kicks. There is a maturity in Jon, James and Tyrone’s production work that came from spending two years on the road testing these songs out. They figured out what worked and more importantly, why. With Bloom, RÜFÜS DU SOL would manage to strike that perfect balance between melodic pop music and propulsive dance music, existing in a rare zone that few other acts can straddle so naturally. Featuring standout track “You Were Right”, “Like an Animal”, and “Innerbloom”, the album would go on to top the Australian album charts and be certified gold. Rebajada in Spanish means “to reduce, to lower”. It’s basically Mexican sonideros (sound-system operators) slowing down the beat of a Cumbia to create a much more tangible music to dance to. Slowed down music allows you enough time to hear right through it, revealing itself in ways rarely experienced before. Everything becomes more transparent and one can notice sounds normally only perceptible by bats. A near psychedelic experience. The sonidero who brought Peruvian and Ecuadorian music to Mexico was the legendary Pablo Perea from Sonido Arco-Iris, and although his fingerprints are all over the compilation Saturno 2000, this selection of songs in rebajada is exclusive to DJ Lengua. With the exception of a few classics from Polibio Mayorga and La Sampuesana – the queen of all rebajadas – most of these songs were probably never performed as such before, let alone released.

JOHN ZORN SPINOZA TZA CD 8388 Archival Series John Medeski, Matt Hollenberg, Kenny Grohowksi, Bill Frisell, John Zorn. Immanence * Spinoza Spinoza is Zorn’s latest creation for the searing jazz-metal trio Simulacrum—perhaps the most extreme organ trio ever. Inspired by the life and thought of one of the world’s greatest philosophers he has composed two extended concerti: one for guitar genius Bill Frisell, and another featuring himself on saxophone. The musical mosaic flows seamlessly from one world to another, touching upon heavy metal, jazz, minimalism, atonality, noise, ambient moods, funk, and so much more. A musical vision as radical as the philosophy of Spinoza himself, this is one of Zorn’s greatest recent works—an essential and exhilarating project as powerful as it is sensitive. Cinema for the ears!

Eli Keszler – The Scary of Sixty-First (OST) Deeper Into Movies Records LP

DIM001LP

809236180179

This first release from the Deeper Into Movies label is the score for Dasha Nekrasova’s award-winning debut feature film ‘The Scary of Sixty-First’. The score meets at the confluence between the visceral electro-acoustic Giallo style and brooding acoustic drones, which feature his abstract and textural percussion playing he has explored in his solo music. All of this working together to evoke the very haunts of the film’s Uptown locations. Speaking about the score Keszler said… “The score was built around the ‘pentagram melody’ as we called it, a seven-note symmetrical pattern that formed the sign found on the tarot card, a repeated motif of dread and premonition found in the film. In the Scary Theme and later in Tarot Theme three variations occur, where each tonal triangle is introduced individually, followed by it playing in counterpoint to each other to complete the symbol. Nekrasova's work is a thriller centred on two young women who unknowingly move into a Manhattan apartment that used to belong to Jeffrey Epstein. Premiering at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, it took home their prestigious ‘Best First Feature’ award. “Eli Keszler’s synth-heavy score elicits some great B-movie moments” Little White Lies “Brash, gutsy, morbidly funny” Variety Side A

CD & Digital Street Date: February 4, 2022 Single LP and Limited Double LP Street Date: April 15, 2022 Summer at Land’s End is the 4th LP from The Reds, Pinks & Purples, Glenn Donaldson’s solo kitchen pop “band.” Since 2019 The Reds, Pinks & Purples has built an obsessive, evergrowing following by combining a traditional vinyl-oriented release schedule with monthly drops of new songs on Bandcamp and live streams on Instagram. 2021’s Uncommon Weather was something of a breakthrough, getting national radio airplay and even reaching #7 in the UK indie album breakers chart. Hitting a wildly prolific phase, Donaldson is back in less than a year with the brilliantly ambitious “Summer At Land’s End.” Like the blossoming flower-themed sleeve might imply, it’s bursting with heart-ripped-open vocals, ringing guitars, and warm reverberations. There are still plenty of concise indie-pop songs, but the album expands on the formula of the first three LPs into hazier acoustic sounds and some extended mood pieces. You might hear ‘80s and ‘90s influences in the echoing guitars, Creation, Teenbeat, 4AD, or even the radio pop of your youth, but more so, you might hear melodies and words that resonate someplace deep down as you journey through “Land's End” and move the needle back to the beginning again. Joel Futterman, Chad Fowler

Timeless Moments

Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA-025 // CD&DL available 4/15/2022 1/18/2022UPC: available

Legendary free improviser Joel Futterman had never met saxophonist Chad Fowler when they decided to create a record of improvised duos. In fact, they still had never met when they finished the recordings. This collection of spontaneously improvised music sounds like the carefully pre-composed work of a collaborative duo with years of experience playing as a unit. Listen closely and you still won't be able to hear that these recordings were made by two musicians at different times and places; One of the pair recording a solo track and sending to the other, in an (almost consistently) oscillating pattern over the course of a few days during the COVID19 pandemic. Futterman and Fowler had once been in a room together. Brought together by a shared love and admiration for the late percussionist Alvin Fielder with whom they had both performed, they sat feet apart at a small invitation-only gathering at the 2019 Vision Festival to honor Fielder's memory. And it was at that Vision Festival that Futterman along with Kidd Jordan, William Parker, and Hamid Drake performed what is now the 2020 release "A Tribute To Alvin Fielder, Live at Vision Festival XXIV" also on Mahakala Music. It was through this release that the duo came together as friends and now musical collaborators. Listen very closely. Try to guess who provided the source material for each part of this suite. Try to hear the separation between the players. You won't hear it. What you'll hear is the sound of old friends recounting musical stories from a long and storied partnership which hasn't yet happened. From beautiful ballads to up-tempo, intricate post-post-bop inspired free blowing to surprisingly deep blues, this duo will take the you on an unforgettable musical journey.

Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA-026 // CD&DL available 4/15/2022 4/8/2022

UPC: 195269146993

The title of this album, Old Stories, and the chapters comprising it match the music perfectly. As Matthew Shipp says, “It's a narrative. A novel of sorts. And even if your story is new, it's a rearranging of elements. All the new stories are old, in some ways. We seem to have been prepared for it, somehow. It was a real delight. Between the freshness of a new encounter and being prepared, that balance is really there. That's what makes it vibrant and exciting for me.” Or, as Chad Fowler puts it, “When you listen to it, it feels like we already knew each other, like we're old friends, even though we had barely talked to each other before that. So it felt like the old shared stories that we tell, that reference events that neither of us has experienced.”

Ghosted

Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin

DC838 LP Street Date: April 15, 2022 Track List: I / II / III / IV NO EXPORT TO UK/EU, AUSTRALIA/NZ, JAPAN, PLEASE HAUNT ALL OTHER TERRITORIES

It was early in 2019 — no, November 2018! — that Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin met at Studio Rymden, in a quiet, pretty suburban district of Stockholm, to make the music that became Ghosted. They can’t remember exactly when it was made because that time — the when and where that it was recorded — doesn’t really matter anymore. Now the music of Ghosted exists in the intention of a shared moment of playing, a clearly delineated time, put forth with a steady flow of small details on bass, guitar and drums, in a remarkable display of rhythmic flexibility within a minimal framework. Oren and Johan have met many times onstage and off since 2003, with several duo recordings to their credit, as well as additional encounters in the group Fire! with Mats Gustafsson and drummer Andreas Werliin. A while back, Oren and Johan decided to reconvene in the studio for a furthering of the thought process that they’d come to on the second Ambarchi / Berthling collaboration, 2015’s Tongue Tied. As Andreas had mixed that session, it felt right to have him on kit — he’d already been intimately involved in the process. The music they all play together in Fire! is, to put it mildly, loud. This session, they sensed an opportunity to explore different dynamics — to tap, perhaps, a shared inner ECM space. Studio Rymden sits on an upper floor of the building it’s located in, and the light coming through the windows was pleasant on that day. They set up, picked out some amps (including the best-sounding Leslie speaker Oren’s ever heard) and got started. Rooting in the rich tonality and repeating figures of Johan’s acoustic (and sometimes electric) bass, the four tracks that make up Ghosted act as variations on a theme, unspooling continuously over the course of 39 minutes with the terse flow of krautrock jams — closely observed percussive riffs and repetitions that build continuously with subtle shifts as they move forward, with the small details flying expansively in and out across the stereo spectrum. Oren’s guitar often sounds with an organ-like tone, with notes of fire and glass wafting out over the percolation and permutation in Johan and Andreas’ rhythms. These men have been playing long enough to, without any real words, shape their improvisations with short and long term goals. Performances that day ranged from almost five minutes to almost sixteen. With an eye toward further expansion, they’d invited the legendary Swedish reed player Christer Bothén, whose knowledge of the guimbri and donso n’goni was incisively shared with the great Don Cherry some fifty years ago. Christer plays donso n’goni on the first track, and his parts sync like cogs in a watch, revolving in fluid coordination with Oren, Johan and Andreas. Mixed and mastered by Joe Talia at Good Mixture, Berlin, Ghosted highlights the intimate dialogue between players, as well as the careful curation of space between them. It is rare to think of silence in relation to music where everyone is constantly playing — and yet, listening to this, we do. Once it was all done, Pål Dybwik’s misty, nocturnal basketball court images seemed to embody the spririt of the album, while once more steering it in a direction that nobody had stopped to imagine, because this was just something in the air. Now it’s in your air. Don’t stop to think. Just listen....

Sam O.B. returns to Bastard Jazz with his second solo 12", "Just A Slice" EP The Astro Nautico cofounder has been busy the last few years with his projects Dave + Sam (with Dave Giles II on Classic Music Co / Defected) and Ensemble Entendu (with Photay) Phot "Just A Slice" is a delicious ode to pizza, lled with bouncy dance numbers peppered with funky bass lines and groovy percussion, all tied together with just the right rig amount of tongue-in-cheek

1-Making Dough 2-Le Sauce 3-Cheezin 4-Just A Slice Sam O.B. has a unique energy. This soft-spoken New York native is at once a producer, DJ, label boss, tastemaker and champion of the new-New York underground; what started as casual experimentation and beat making for rappers and friends has evolved over the last decade into an unrelenting solo passion. Fueled by pizza and the spirit of dance music, "Just A Slice" sees Chef Sam O.B. cooking up four courses: "Making Dough" - a nod to house classics, featuring vocals from Sam himself (replete with winking lyrics) - leads to "Le Sauce," which ( takes things deeper, with a meandering bass line and lush synths. "Cheezin'" is full of syncopated rhythms, leaning into a disco feel, while the piping hot title track closes out the EP with a dance oor-ready kick, heavy bass, and atmospheric pads. "Just A Slice" shows Sam at his best: Pristine production, virtuosic musicianship, irresistible groove, and witty humour perfectly packaged in a tight and tasty four tracks.

A friend’s invitation brought Bresler to a rural village outside Tel Aviv, and the move lit a spark: Bresler set up shop in the village’s local auditorium named ‘The House of Arches’. Friends dug into psychedelic jazz and funk, all built upon Bresler’s polyrhythmic beats. Free-form jams in the morning reigned into tight, mesmerizing grooves in the afternoon. Those six compositions — each recorded live in one day — make up House of Arches, Amir Bresler’s first solo LP. Artist Bio

Tel Aviv’s most jaw-dropping drummer can dive into funk, prog-jazz, psych-folk, alt-soul or rock ‘n’ roll, but one thing is always clear: this man plays drums like you’ve never heard before. He's toured with some of the region’s premier jazz musicians, including iconic bassist Avishai Cohen. Today, Amir's the most in-demand drummer in the Middle East—no one makes your body move quite like him.

Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit returns with explorative new single Fernweh as a precursor for an Erased Tapes compilation titled Music for kō coming out on April 15. 1. Fernweh is a hymn for imaginary travel, allowing the music to take you on a journey. This self-produced piece, sung in a universal wordless language, sees Hatis Noit transcend boundaries through eerie, atmospheric sound explorations. Its German title, meaning a longing for exploring faraway places, captures the artist’s headspace at the time of recording. “During the third UK lockdown in early 2021 I finally challenged myself to self-produce a whole song, which I hadn’t done before. Before, I wanted to focus on just using my voice rather than making music sitting in front of a computer, but the situation of lockdown challenged me to go on this new journey. Whilst making the piece, I felt a sense of missing going on physical journeys, and that sense of wonder that comes with travelling. So the song turned out to be a collage of memories of journeys I had so far as well as imaginary journeys I might have in the future. The whole process of making this healed the painful feeling of Fernweh for me somehow, and I hope it might have the same effect on others.” — Hatis Noit The track is the opening piece to an upcoming Erased Tapes compilation featuring Rival Consoles, Masayoshi Fujita and Daniel Thorne, originally commissioned by Folie À Plusieurs in partnership with the Noguchi Museum in New York. The compilation will be available on black 12” vinyl on Tapes. April 1 152022 2022via viaErased Erased Tapes.

NOW AVAILABLE FROM _____________________________________________________________________________ Jenny Berkel “Pale Moon Kid” LP – first time on vinyl! Since releasing Pale Moon Kid, in 2016, a lot has changed for Canadian artist Jenny Berkel. Known predominately as a singer-songwriter, Jenny has begun to garner a literary audience while stepping out as a poet. Outside Music’s vinyl reissue of Pale Moon Kid— with reimagined artwork and printed lyrics —comes shortly after the publication of her debut chapbook, Grease Dogs, with Baseline Press. Praised for its emotive storytelling and vivid lyricism, Pale Moon Kid is an album of postcards that serendipitously foreshadows a poetic practice rooted in observation and introspection. Now, with music and writing both central to her artistic identity, Jenny stands out as an all-around storyteller— with an evocative practice that explores the relationship between poetry and song and hinges powerful narratives on the intricacies of a multifaceted musicality. Doug Paisley “Doug Paisley” CD / LP “… Just as a new figure of hope arrives in the mansion of the hill, along comes a young songwriter who’s tapped into the red clay dirt of a new depression America. And he’s done it gently, with songs of poetry, harmony and sweetness, and the honeyed, craggy voice of the classic country singer. Like Neil Young and The Band before him, Paisley is a Canadian outsider, viewing America anew while fully immersed in its history and myths. Like The Band he re-presents American music history without the trappings of fashion and, like the Young of After The Goldrush, uses his outsider status to ponder America’s fate.” – MOJO, 2009 “Paisley, like Young and a few other singer-songwriters, has the power of immediate communication: when he opens his mouth, you believe him utterly – that he has crossed the rivers, climbed the mountains, some through the fires, lived every molecule of what he sings.” – TimeOut New York, 2009 Original release date: November 4, 2008 Genres: Americana, Folk, Singer-Songwriter Catalogue #: LP-OUT-9185 // CD-OUT-9185

Doug Paisley “Constant Companion” LP “[Doug Paisley is] not afraid to set easy sounds against hard truths. As his songs repeat, they reveal something behind the anodyne aspects of the music – a patient, practical mind that does not deceive itself about the difficulties of love. Paisley will lull you with his good nature, but he won’t rock you to sleep after that.” – Sasha Frere-Jones, The New Yorker “When Paisley’s debut solo album was released last year, critics embraced his warm, wise and sometimes dark country songs. On his new record he is joined by Leslie Feist on two songs, and Garth Hudson, formerly of The Band on keyboards. His songs are as haunting as ever, with an emotional depth that keeps you humming and considering the songs long after the CD has stopped playing.” – Shauna C Keddy, No Depression

DAMEFRISØR DO YOU THINK I'M SPECIAL? STREET DATE: 15 APRIL 2022 LABEL: PERMANENT CREEPS RECORDS

Track listing A. Do You Think I'm Special? B. 2-HEH-V

LIMITED EDITION BLACK 7” CAT NO: PCR049 UPC: 5056340103210

“The track is beautifully textured, drenched in trembling reverb but basking in a bright, almost optimistic tone – as if finding a sense of finality in the cacophonous noise washing over them.” So Young Magazine

Forming at a Bristol club night in 2019 with a collective appreciation for all things shoegaze, DAMEFRISØR bring bags of driving rhythms and swirling guitars. They are Kazhi Jahfar (Vocals) Nyle Dowd (Drums) Garin Curtis (Guitar) Jamie Brown (Guitar) and Sam Nobbs (Synth). Taking the typical band route, they spent their time in garages finding a sound, until they outgrew that space and headed to the studio. With only a handful of shows under their belts the band enlisted Bristol producer Dom Mitchsion (Spectres, LICE, Heavy Lungs) to record their first singles 'Huile' plus 'And You Know'. Taking influence from their admiration for Kevin Shield's wallof-sound and the dark undertones of post-punk, 'Huile' gave an indication of what was to come from the band. Following a few months later with 'And You Know' which gained plaudits from So Young Magazine, DIY, Hard of Hearing and more. The track became a key part of the energetic, captivating live set; one that would see them invited to perform with the likes of Talk Show, ALASKALASKA and Bull. Just as the band were gaining the momentum, fans and praise, the world came to a grinding halt. Cancelled shows and postponed studio time allowed the band to take a step back and look for a fresh direction. With the addition of a synth in the mix the band took on a more progressive sound, experimenting more with their tones and techniques. In February the band finally got back to the basement studio of The Louisiana with producer Will Carkeet (Robbie & Mona, Pet Shimmers) to record their new singles. They are now proud to present to you their debut 7” single 'Do You Think I'm Special?' to be released digitally via Permanent Creeps Records (Sep 22) followed by 7” vinyl in early 2022.

Fontaines D.C. Skinty Fia Title:

Overview

Selling Points

2020’s A Hero’s Death saw Fontaines D.C. land a #2 album in the UK, receive nominations at the GRAMMYs, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards, and sell out London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Now the band return with their third record in as many years: Skinty Fia. Used colloquially as an expletive, the title roughly translates from the Irish language into English as “the damnation of the deer”; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph - the songs ultimately form a longdistance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer.

RILO KILEY

TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS (20th Anniversary Edition)

bark19LPDLX 2xLP +DOWNLOAD

STREET DATE: APRIL 22, 2022

Barsuk Records is delighted to release this 20th Anniversary edition of Rilo Kiley’s debut full-length Take Offs and Landings. Limited to 3,000 copies worldwide, this double-LP is pressed on 180-gram WHITE VINYL, with hidden track and FULL-COLOR UV PRINT on side D. At the beginning of the 2000’s, Rilo Kiley was a fiercely independent band, having released an EP under their own Rilo Records label. But, even with only very minimal touring outside of southern California, their brilliant live show and excellent songcraft started to attract a fair amount of national attention in publications like Harper's Bazaar and Rolling Stone, and even some airplay on MTV. The band initially self-released Take Offs and Landings before signing to Barsuk, who promptly reissued the album. Rilo Kiley quickly joined the ranks of labelmates Death Cab for Cutie and other acts such as Bright Eyes, The Shins, and The Decemberists as early ‘00s indie rock exploded into the mainstream.

While the band stopped releasing albums after 2007’s Under the Blacklight, their popularity has continued to grow in the subsequent years. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, Stereogum recently posted a lengthy feature on Take Offs and Landings’ influence over the current landscape of indie rock, quoting Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and noting “The way millennials have reminisced about Rilo Kiley’s personal impact often mirrors the language Generation X has used to describe the riot grrrl movement only a decade before. If Kathleen Hanna’s goal was to tell women in her crowds that their anger was justified, [the band’s primary songwriter and singer Jenny] Lewis represented the opposing side of the same coin via Rilo Kiley: It’s OK to be unabashedly and emphatically sad.”

INDIE EDITION VINYL

Joshua Hedley is “a singing professor of country & western,” he declares on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue. It might sound like a punchline, but it’s not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he’s devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. Ask him about it and he’ll explain: “When all my friends went off to college, I went to Nashville. I was 19 years old playing honkytonks and getting an education.” His 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox, showcased his deep knowledge of country’s history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and ‘60s. His mentors were George Jones, Ray Price, and Glen Campbell, but his most remarkable accomplishment was putting his own spin on their style. Neon Blue, on the other hand, examines a very different, often forsaken era: the early 1990s. “The last bastion of country music,” says the professor, “was the early 1990s, roughly 1989 and 1996. You could turn on the radio and immediately know you’re hearing a country song. You could still hear steel guitar and fiddle. But there was a hard fork around 1996 or ’97, when country veered off into pop territory. Neon Blue asks, What if that fork had never happened? What if country kept on sounding like country?” That era may have been dismissed by traditionalists at the time as slick or overproduced, but Hedley finds something exciting in that old hat-act sound, and Neon Blue plays up the excitement of bigger-than-life choruses, the relatable emotions of those sad-eyed ballads, and the inventiveness of the lively production. “The sound is modern,” he says, “but it’s still discernibly country.”

Since its release in 2009 The Pains of Being Pure At Heart’s self-titled debut has attained the status of a modern indiepop classic, and even more crucially a record that continues to have an impact well beyond the indiepop scene. As one of the key bands in Brooklyn’s late 00s guitar music revival (alongside Crystal Stilts, Grizzly Bear, Vivian Girls, Frankie Rose and others) The Pains paid tribute to everything from C86 to early Slumberland, Sarah and Creation label pop, but with a distinct American flavor drawn from groups like Smashing Pumpkins and The Pixies. Their debut album exploded immediately, going places that indiepop records and bands rarely do (like TV appearances on Carson Daly's and David Letterman's shows) and leading to several years of constant touring and the further release of two more well-received albums. Now we’re happy to bring this album back to a new generation of pop fans with its first widely-available vinyl repress in several years, this time on unique, eye-catching white vinyl with pink and yellow splatter. A fitting tribute to a modern indiepop classic. “The Pains of Being Pure at Heart simply made a slyly confident debut…” — Pitchfork, Best New Album “If dreamy, ’80s-sounding indie pop is your thing, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart have your number in a big way.” – Time Out NY “...addictive pop gold that locates a place beyond the band's well-chosen influences.” – Stereogum Contact: Stephen Svacina email: stephen@redeyeworldwide.com tel: 1.877.733.3931

Jeanines' 2019 self-titled debut was an indiepop tour-de-force that drew from a deep set of DIY pop influences, garnering attention from well beyond the international pop underground. Now they're back with Don't Wait For A Sign, and it's a real gem. With the band now divided geographically and touched by the isolation and uncertainty of the pandemic, Jeanines' new album is deeper and a bit darker than their debut. The folk influences feel more pronounced, at times recalling early Fairport Convention or Vashti Bunyan as much as indiepop touchstones like Dear Nora, The Aislers Set, and the many bands of Pam Berry. The thirteen songs on "Don't Wait For A Sign" show a band in total mastery of their idiom —a brilliantly compelling blend of timeless influences illuminated by distinctive songwriting and sharp lyrics. The arrangements are always on point, full of interesting transitions and modulations but never fussy or in the way of the songs themselves. Alicia Jeanine's vocals really take flight here, richer and more confident, and often layered in harmony. Second albums can be tricky, but with "Don't Wait For A Sign” Jeanines ably manage to build on their terrific debut with well-honed songwriting, singular melodies, and unerringly sympathetic production.

TOO VISCIOUS TO BE RELEASED IN ‘68! TOO GREAT TO HOLD BACK NOW! TRACKLISTING:

SAVAGE QUEENS PROTO-PUNK!

THATʼS ALL I WANT TO DO NEVER WILL I LOVE AGAIN EXISTED IN LONELINESS GIVE ME THE REASON

In the tsunami of American bands formed after the Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, many made records, some had hits, and some even had sustained success like their idols. But there were just as many who carved out a niche in their local scenes, yet never made it to vinyl and faded into memory. Such was the case with Violent River — until now.

Formed in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, New York as the Mauvais in 1967, the band comprised four students from local Newtown High School — vocalist Larry Pallini, bassist John Greco, guitarist Tony Mazurkiewicz and organist Frank Caira — plus drummer Paul V. from Long Island. Violent River penned four originals but only expected to record “Give Me The Reason” when they entered a Manhattan studio in late 1968, but the studio’s originals-only mandate dictated otherwise. Overcoming the studio’s out-of-tune organ and piano, the band laid down their originals, got acetates cut, then amicably went their separate ways as adulthood entered the picture in 1969.

• Killer originals making their vinyl debut, over 50 years in the making! • Pressed on gold vinyl at Third Man Pressing, and packaged in a Modern Harmonic Space-Age Envelope Jacket! • Includes a brilliant set of liners from Doug Sheppard of Ugly Things!

Stolen Time

Just listen. Toronto songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell offers this prompt at the end of synesthetic piano tune “I See Music”, but the invitation could apply to her entire third album, Stolen Time. Produced by Howard Bilerman at Hotel2Tango Studio in Montreal, Stolen Time is elemental and powerfully evocative, channeling natural imagery and the revolving seasons to take a longer look over decades and generations, ultimately delivering up the present moment the way only the best music can. By turns poetic and painterly, Stolen Time brings a live-off-the-floor, 70s folk-rock vibe and structural experimentation to songs that feel expansive in their scope—unhurried, psychedelic and other-worldly in the vein of Gillian Welch or Karen Dalton. It also marks the meeting of two important music communities for Lapell, who spent formative years living in Montreal’s Mile End before moving back to her hometown. Toronto players include Dan Fortin (bass), Dani Nash (drums, vocals) and Christine Bougie (lap steel, guitars); and from Montreal, Katie Moore (vocals), Pietro Amato (French horn) and Ellwood Epps (trumpet). Lapell’s band underscores and meets the power of her vocals on songs like “Ships,” a wild sax solo seemingly enticing her higher and louder to meet the crashing waves. The twangy guitar of “Stolen Time” recalls the hazy ambivalence of lazy summer days, wasting away in a state between bliss and blitz. “Old Flames,” with Lapell’s melodic fingerstyle guitar mimicking flickering embers, could be read as a bit of an answer song to Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.” But many of Stolen Time’s standout tracks are solo guitar or piano ballads, backed by little more than Lapell’s harmonica, antique pump organ or accordion--including “Waterfall,” with its captivating cascade of descending notes; love song closer “I Can’t Believe,” which sounds like a 1950s standard and features Nashville legend Fats Kaplin on pedal steel; and “Land Of Plenty,” which you would be forgiven for mistaking for a lost Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger tune. The album’s title comes from the musical term tempo rubato, which Lapell picked up while teaching herself piano. Referring to the expressive push and pull of tempo in musical phrasing, it’s also a fitting metaphor for the fragile rhythm of uncertain times, darkness hand in hand with escapism. Over the past five years and two spellbinding albums, Lapell has garnered two Canadian Folk Music Awards (English Songwriter of the Year in 2020 and Contemporary Album of the Year in 2017), hit number one on Canadian folk radio and accrued a staggering 13 million+ Spotify streams while touring widely across Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

LISTEN HERE Tortoise has spent nearly 30 years making music that defies description. While the Chicago-based instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its revered and influential discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even stubbornly, their own. One of the throughlines that create that distinctive sound is what might be called a pervasive element of group play, or ensemble-mindedness, as opposed to emphasis on a virtuoso soloist or frontman. Rhythms, Resolutions and Clusters follows in this line as Tortoise turned their iconic early songs over to their friends to play with. The remixes by other legends including Bundy K. Brown, Steve Albini, Jim O’Rourke, Brad Wood (Liz Phair), Casey Rice, Mike Watt (Minute Men), and Rick Brown (75 Dollar Bill) create a sense of community, and unlimited creativity. It’s been out of print since 1995.

Tortoise...have spent the past 25 years and seven albums fusing dub, jazz, prog, and indie into an instantly recognizable and much-loved trademark sound. - Pitchfork As with the best of Tortoise, these tracks can be enjoyed on many levels, but when listened to carefully, they reveal seemingly infinite sonic treasures. - Pitchfork ALSO AVAILABLE : Tortoise CD/LP (Thrill 013) Millions Now Living... The record ushered in a late 90’s remix craze, and launched a 12” series of remixes by a wide range of artists. This extremely limited re-press for our 30th Anniversary is a Tortoise record unlike any other, as Tortoise turned their iconic early songs over to their friends to play with. We love the sense of community & unlimited creativity that this record represents. Remixes include mixes by Steve Albini, Jim O’Rourke, Mike Watt (Minute Men), Brad Wood ( Liz Phair ), and Rick Brown ( 75 Dollar Bill). 30 years into a groundbreaking career, Tortoise remain a Thrill Jockey best seller. Tortoise have been in demand and known for their international touring, featured at major festivals such as Pitchfork, Big Ears, Le Guess Who, Primavera, among others. MOURNING [A] BLKstar THE CYCLE The Cycle is the fifth album by Mourning [A] BLKstar. It’s the Cleveland-based collective’s masterwork -- a double LP spanning 20 songs and three singers, touching on neo-soul, hip-hop, and the cosmic expanse in between/beyond. It is a humble addition to the long legacy of James Baldwin’s adage of the artist as witness. It is their song cycle, written in a time that just may need a song or two in support of and in love and power to the living.

SPEEDY ORTIZ MAJOR ARCANA On their debut full-length, Northampton, Massachusetts’ Speedy Ortiz manages a bit of magic by conjuring the spirits of classic American indie rock, while twisting those ghosts into new shapes. It’s easy to hear the influences of Helium, Jawbox, and Chavez on this album, as well as nods to their contemporaries including Grass is Green, Pile, and Roomrunner. Sweet vocal harmonies run up against gnarly distortion, aided by basic, chunky bass parts and heavy, fill-laden drums.

SPEEDY ORTIZ

The album was recorded in a few days in November at Justin Pizzoferrato’s (Dinosaur Jr., Chelsea Light Moving) studio, Sonelab, a huge space in an old factory in Easthampton, Mass. The sessions went from very early in the day until very late at night, with the band taking its time to experiment. Pizzoferrato’s collection of old distortion pedals were utilized on both the record’s guitars and vocals.

The theme of the occult and the supernatural runs deep through Major Arcana, inspired by singer-guitarist Sadie Dupuis’ reading on black magic. Dupuis’ sometimes knotty and abstract lyrics bring to mind fellow wordsmith Stephen Malkmus, while referencing horror film tropes, chemistry, and neuroscience. Major Arcana’s literal translation is “major mysteries,” a phrase from tarot cards. “I don’t write in a narrative way and am more concerned with use of language than meaning,” Dupuis says, “so I like the open-endedness of the title and the way it invites interpretation.” “...like Mary Timony fronting Archers of Loaf in a studio whose walls were crumbling around them thanks to the earth-shattering guitar squall...caustic, clever and bitterly funny.” — Pitchfork, BEST NEW MUSIC “...packs more vivid melody and glorious noise into >5 minutes than seems possible...” — Stereogum

OHYUNG ‘imagine naked!’ nna tapes

OHYUNG’s first full length on NNA Tapes is a collection of loving ambient expressions of persistence, repetition, and variation.

Brooklyn-based Asian American musician and composer OHYUNG’s music is continuously shifting, investigating, and deconstructing the possibilities of form. Written and recorded mostly over just a 72-hour period, OHYUNG’s immersive and mesmerizing new album ‘imagine naked!’—the artist’s first release on NNA Tapes— focuses on expansion and atmospheric depth. It is a collection of loving ambient expressions of persistence, repetition, and variation. Each song is titled after a line from t. tran le’s poem, “Vegetalscape,” which acts as an artistic companion to the album. The poem works to spotlight little things that le imparts beauty upon despite the challenges of living with mental illness, such as a bedroom garden, or a sibling’s voice singing in the shower. The music of imagine naked! is full and complex, with each track using its time to articulate an entire spectrum of lived emotion with remarkable elegance and simplicity.

Release Date: April 22, 2022 Tracklist:

On this album, OHYUNG deliberately moves away from the experimental, electronic, hip-hop, and noise influenced work of their previous records, Untitled (Chinese Man with Flame), PROTECTOR, and GODLESS, and expands on the space found in their work as a composer on films like Bambirak, which won the 2021 Short Film Jury Award for International Fiction at Sundance Film Festival, and the Gotham Award-nominated Test Pattern. By focusing on longer, more drawn-out, and textural compositions as an exercise in patience and as a means to cope with the difficult, oscillating new experience of time brought on by the pandemic, OHYUNG has found yet another new way to consider reality and feeling.

JAMES HEATHER INVISIBLE FORCES Release Date: April 22, 2022 Contemporary pianist and composer James Heather announces his second album ‘Invisible Forces’ out on the 22nd April via Ahead of Our Time, Ninja Tune founders Coldcut’s first record label. Influenced by the sensibility of electronic, ambient, orchestral and post-rock music but channelled through solo piano and his classical and jazz grounding. Heather’s new album is about becoming aware of invisible forces around us to help deepen understanding of self and our connection to the world, from tuning into the natural world and getting lost in its patterns and energies to gaining more knowledge around ancestral lines such as the concept of epigenetics. It’s about looking that bit deeper into things, into areas that are not instantly visible but are all around us to achieve this. Since the release of his 2017 debut ‘Modulations: EP1’ and the subsequent full length, critically acclaimed album ‘Stories From Far Away on Piano’, Heather has amassed over 120 million streams on the major streaming platforms, reached number 14 in the Billboard Classical Crossover charts, and gained major critical and fan support; notable supporters of Heather's music include James Lavelle (UNKLE), Nils Frahm, Cillian Murphy, Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder (via his live session he did for them in 2021) and The Cinematic Orchestra. He has collaborated with Dawn Richard, Coldcut, Mumdance and Roger Robinson (King Midas Sound).

VTSS PROJECTIONS Release Date: April 22, 2022 London based producer and DJ VTSS debuts her first release on Technicolour with a new EP titled “Projections”. Hard. Fast. Uncompromising. This is how VTSS, one of techno's brightest new stars of the past few years, tends to be described. But there's more to the artist, real name Martyna Maja, than that reputation might suggest. It's true that she's one of dance music's most notorious thrillseekers; Maja's DJ sets the world over, from Berghain to Bossa Nova, are renowned for their blow-the-house-down energy. And her club tracks, from speaker-crumbling early EPs like Self-Will and Identity Process, show the headstrong hedonism that's become her trademark. But Projections, VTSS's first EP for Ninja Tune is, she says, a "new chapter" that simultaneously represents a fresh direction and a return to her experimental roots. While her tracks were already acquiring fans in Blawan and Rebekah, VTSS was also DJing at mega-raves like London's Junction 2 and Possession in Paris; simultaneously, she was gaining a rep for her mind-bending gigs at Berghain's most musically adventurous dance floor, Säule. Throughout 2019 she pulled off the difficult wire-balancing act of being a critics' favourite and a big-room destroyer, made evident by pathbreaking mixes for Resident Advisor, Dekmantel, Boiler Room, BBC's Essential Mix and Mixmag, who also made VTSS their November cover star. Projections introduces a new phase of VTSS's catalogue. Its nimble drum architectures and scattered tempos express, on the one hand, a desire to break away from familiar ideas, and on the other, a single-minded pursuit of self-expression. From the EP's "For your safety," a d&b-adjacent perc storm with cool-blue synth shades that evoke Solaris-era Photek, to the lurching hydrodub of "Live laugh leave," VTSS's increasingly expansive musical persona shines through.

CLEAREYE SHINING STREET DATE APRIL 22 2022

Cleareye Shining is the much anticipated sophomore album from Melbourne industrial post punk outfit Bitumen. This new album sees the four-piece building on the primitive industrial post-punk of their 2018 debut LP Discipline Reaction (Vacant Valley), broadening their sound further into electronic and synth-based, gothic pop realms. Cutting guitars and stabbing bass remain – as does the dynamic intensity of Discipline Reaction – but now fused with new influences to create an album of diverse, direct and intricately-wrought songs. Guitars, synths, samples, and electronic drums coalesce with the distinct and incendiary vocals of extraordinary frontwoman Kate Binning, whose lyrics weave stories set across ancient times, the modern world and futurist dystopian possibilities. Sometimes romantic, melancholy or full of rage. Known for their intense live performances, Bitumen have played alongside the likes of Lydia Lunch, Peter Murphy, The Chameleons and Drab Majesty among many others. While performing was off the agenda throughout 2020, the band leaned in to producing a finely-detailed studio album, experimenting more heavily with electronic instrumentation, layered vocals, and house and breakbeat-inspired percussion. Cutting guitars and stabbing bass remain – as does the dynamic intensity of Discipline Reaction – but now fused with a new palette to create an album of diverse, direct and intricately-wrought songs. The resulting album evokes nostalgia, all the while carving something entirely new and singularly exciting. It’s a stone cold killer record. “With Cleareye Shining Bitumen have created a true work of art that is entirely their own. It furthers the canons of industrial, post-punk & electronica into bold new territory both beautifully refined and exhilaratingly unnerving.” Dominique Furphy 4ZZZfm “(Cleareye Shining) Summons the Spirit of Dreamy Early 90s Alt Rock…sounds like that sweet spot in post-punk and goth-tinged alternative rock that you will find from bands like Curve and Medicine.” Alice Teeple Post-punk.com GENRE: POST-PUNK, SYNTH-PUNK, SYNTH-POP, DARKWAVE, GOTHIC, ELECTRONIC ROCK, INDUSTRIAL, ALTERNATIVE RIYL: SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES, BOY HARSHER, KILLING JOKE, CURVE, MEDICINE, DEPECHE MODE, DRAB MAJESTY, MOLCHAT DOMA, SEXTILE, MALARIA!, RIKI, PATRIARCHY

Boxlot 30 CS-HAN-065 About 1984 1984 is an unpredictable trek through a murky backdrop and with dark motifs plucked straight from George Orwell's iconic, and sometimes romanticized, novel. East meets West as Moves, a Halifax hip hop legend, crafts the ideal score for Touch, an Edmonton rap vet, to examine numerous themes originating from the original book published in 1949. War, torture, betrayal, media, police reform, class inequities, and change are all subjects injected into this visceral exploration of some of the most important issues of 2021 and beyond.

About Touch Touch begins with beats, bars and cuts, but his detailed character studies and his nuanced stories further enable the listener to explore as far as their imagination will take them. Touch has been part of Edmonton's hip hop scene since the early 90s, and as one third of Dangerous Goods Collective, he was on their classic and singular project, On The Level, in 2001, plus he has another 10+ solo albums, most either self-produced by alter ego Dusty Kraytz or conceptual collaborations with a single producer, among them T.Perk, The Dirty Sample, DJ Matto, and the legendary Moves. About Moves With 60+ albums under his belt (and at least half self-released on his own Low Pressure label) Moves is a living legend and true Canadian classic. A DJ since ’91 and producing by the following year, he’s also known to kick the occasional R-Tard rap. Moves cut his teeth as a founding member of Truro, Nova Scotia rap group Hip Club Groove, best known for their video for “Shootin’ the Gift,” an early blueprint for Trailer Park Boys by director Mike Clattenburg, and later toured extensively as the DJ for wonderful one-hitters Len (“Steal My Sunshine”). Along the way, he touched down for significant stays in Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver, before ending up back in his hometown of Truro, Nova Scotia. But wherever he puts down roots, he and his Halfway House Studio proceed to have a heavy and positive impact on the local hip hop scene. Any list of rappers for which he has produced albums must include Tachichi, Fatt Matt, Cee!!!!!!!!, Birdapres, Josh Martinez, and Governor Bolts, plus his own Hiss series.

The Hijack

Brooklyn rapper/producer brokeMC and NC-based DJ/Producer DJ HALO have teamed up to hijack the airwaves. In an age where nothing is sacred, what better avenue to take than irreverent attacks on the institutions and conventions which hold us hostage? DJ HALO’s dense and churning production is matched by brokeMC’s equally dense and acerbic diatribes against the zeitgeist, poltergeists, and gesundheits. To celebrate the fine line between genius and madness, philanthropy and psychopathy, the tracks have been titled after some of our era’s most notorious overachievers. Veterans of DIY/NY underground music scene, DJ HALO and brokeMC have--individually and with other projects--rocked from major venues like The Knitting Factory and Bowery Ballroom to the dankest basements of Brooklyn, Oakland, and Quebec City. In their 10+ years careers, they have collaborated and performed with artists like KRS-1, Thundercat, Bernie Worrell, Homeboy Sandman, Aceyalone, and billy woods. DJ HALO and brokeMC have worked together for years, but this is their first EP together. It features a cameo by Cali MC MHTheVERB in the video game nostalgia epic “Billy Mitchell.”It will be released as a limited c assette from indie labels Four Finger Distro and U Don't Deserve This Beautiful Art.
