AFRIRAMPO KORE GA MAYAKU DA TZA CD 7258 New Japan Oni, Pikachu. I Did Are * O * Kairaku Do Re Mi * Want You * I Am Bird * Pekkopa In Brooklyn * Nakimushikemushi Good Bye! * Kui! Kui! * On Ska To Paar Ya * Hadaka * Matane FOCUS ON A TZADIK CLASSIC Another exciting unit out of the infamous Osaka underground rock scene. Close friends with the Boredoms and Acid Mother’s Temple, Afrirampo is a bizarre duo of two twenty year old girls who sing and play guitar and drums like no one else. Scantily clad in outrageous costumes, alternately kicking, screaming and caressing their instruments with an animalistic passion, this extreme and original band is the natural inheritor of the Boredoms legacy. Eleven songs about love, sex and death. “This is poison.”

Gunn-Truscinski Duo SOUNDKEEPER

NEW LP PRESSING! BACK IN PRINT! LP-TLR-131

This music does not come out of nowhere. It comes from a guitar amplifier and a drum kit, and you are standing directly in front of them. And it’s beautiful, all dozen tracks of the Gunn-Truscinski Duo’s Soundkeeper: beautiful loud exchanges between Steve Gunn’s shimmerblast guitar and John Truscinski’s outside-in drums, beautiful quiet exchanges that hum, beautiful melodies that evoke long-lost screen worlds and old filmstock, beautiful phrases that telescope into saturating pinwheels. With a decade-long partnership that’s far more like a real band than their discography might imply, Soundkeeper is the duo’s fourth proper album. No one-off blowing session carved into tracks, Soundkeeper is a focused realization of the pair’s full dynamic sweep. It’s music that goes straight for it, ecstasy and flotation and otherness, neither songs nor jams. Perhaps more like windows. Or events. It’s music that immediately goes out, gets out, stays out, has always been out, a glowing radius around the amp and drum kit, intimate even at volume. On Soundkeeper, they look into the space past Gunn’s overloaded acoustic 12-string (“Curtain”), project movies in the sky over an empty beach (“Ocean City”), trace cloud shapes with muted drums and 6-string (“Windows”), and find expansive drumless horizons with Truscinski on lead drone (“Northwest”). Sequenced with intention, finding the right pieces of music and thought and conversation out of numerous hours of recording, Soundkeeper is more stated than statement, a vision shaped from openness, presented whole. Though rooted in the loose lo-fi noise scenes of the early aughts, when Gunn focused on experimentation and Truscinski tumbled with western Massachusetts units like X.O.4., the pair’s music often feels like sailing towards calmer waters, emphasis on towards. Born in parallel to Gunn’s emergent career as a lyrical guitarist and taut songwriter, it’s not hard to hear the ingrained sense of yearning melody that ties the two parts of the guitarist’s music together. And though John Truscinski is the drummer in the Gunn-Truscinski Duo, his other musical ventures--including his recent solo debut Bridle Path--rarely involve drums at all, holding or negating space with drones and microtonal washes and what Steve calls “focused void.” Together, Gunn and Truscinski wield themselves as a tool of the third voice, sometimes together by themselves, sometimes together with others, expanding to a quartet with Body/Head’s Kim Gordon and Bill Nace to record and perform a soundtrack for the Andy Warhol film Kiss in 2019. While the bulk of Soundkeeper is drawn from sessions at Sonelab in western Massachusetts and Echo Canyon in Hoboken, two of the album’s anchor pieces (the 10-minute “Pyramid Merchandise” and the 16-minute title track) come from shows recorded at the band’s virtual home venue of Brooklyn’s Union Pool. With the familiar backroom clatter audible at first, the pair’s collective thought shimmers and coalesces in riots of sound, different elements popping into view like characters from a cartoon tornado or melodies emerging from overtones, sounding for a few seconds like a basement noise session, a dreamy Yo La Tengo jam, an ESP-Disk’ fire music manifesto, a Michael Chapman mourn, inside patterns and outside blasts. This music does not come out of nowhere.

Garcia Peoples have been a magnetic north for me since I first saw the name a few years ago, loved the suspected pun in there, then heard the psychedelic mission and improvising nerve on the records, the circulating gig tapes and finally in the first-person high of live performance. But in a season of fear and profound loss with no clear way ahead, Garcia Peoples rolled up that night with an uncanny medicine that shook me forward and keeps this album within reach, in a high rotation of assuring message and serial discovery. First impressions count a lot when you find a new, favorite record. But the ones that stick around don't give you everything at once. Nightcap at Wits' End has a lot of what I need right now – then brings something new every time I play it. The duality here runs deep: almost 50 minutes of intricately arranged composition and kinetic guitar chorales christened in tribute to both a familiar place of refuge and that ragged state of mind beyond all common sense, when you keep on going even after you've run out of rope and road. The music itself is a double image: one album-length side of songs that advance the crisp momentum and tangled jangle of early-2019's Natural Facts; and a second half that extends the medley action on Cosmic Cash with the long reach of One Step Behind in a suite of dynamic writing and bonded, instrumental charge, connected by live-to-tape jams – the band's first time exercising that second-nature-on-stage in a studio.

The juxtaposition affirms what I wrote in the opening line when I reviewed Natural Facts for Rolling Stone: "Expect the unexpected." And expect it right away. The great crash of guitars at the end of "Gliding Through" suddenly turns into "Wasted Time," a dream state of rippled-water singing that escalates into its own incandescent guitar argument. Halfway into "Painting a Vision That Carries," the music hovers in a suspense of acoustic strum and fuzz-buster chords – "Way out there on the brink," as the lyric goes – before the charging, instrumental climax. Over in the suite, "One at a Time" is slippery bass and swimming guitars; one improvisation sounds like treble prayer winging through a Marin County mist; and there is a minute-and-change of wahwah brutality before the striking finish of "Shadow," a quiet hymn for rising through wreckage. Nightcap at Wits' End was a long time coming: more than nine months in Philadelphia with Jeff Zeigler, who recorded Natural Facts – from the first work in August, 2019 to the final mix, only a few weeks before I heard it in that eerie midnight. But this album has arrived as if absolutely destined for right now. I am tempted to say it is the band's best record, except Garcia Peoples are too restless to settle for plateaus. Just do as the title says. Raise a glass at your wit's end, and let the music blow away the night. – David Fricke, June 2020

DRY CLEANING

New Long Leg

Dry Cleaning burst on the scene last year, selfreleasing two critically acclaimed EPs before drawing the attention of labels big and small, finally signing with legendary UK label 4AD. Their debut album (which has not been announced yet), New Long Leg, will be released April 2nd. In advance of announcing the album, the band shared the single “Scratchcard Lanyard” in late 2020, which drew the attention and admiration of the press, including The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NPR Music, and more.

Scratchcard Lanyard Unsmart Lady Strong Feelings Leafy Her Hippo New Long Leg John Wick More Big Birds A.L.C Every Day Carry

The band’s origin story is fantastic: the band formed after a karaoke night and was based out of the minuscule garage next to the house of bassist Lewis Maynard’s mum. One day, however, after a mutual friend’s exhibition, guitarist Tom Dowse played some snippets of what they’d been working on to Florence Shaw, a visual artist, picture researcher and drawing lecturer. A few days later, she came to his flat armed with a copy of Michael Bernard Loggins’ ‘Fears Of Your Life’ to read out over the music, and later still started contributing words of her own. Before long she was the group’s frontperson (joining Maynard, Dowse, and drummer Nick Buxton), her dryness, wit, and linguistic acrobatics acting as the perfect counter to the musicians’ taut instrumentals. Shaw extracts the most immense meaning from the most trivial things; on ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ air fresheners become mighty oaks, and Instagram filters become exotic destinations. She peppers the songs with a thousand tiny details, little witty asides about supermarkets, cupboards, beauty products and body parts add up to sonic landscapes that teem with the strange magic of ordinary life. “a jumble of wordplay and wired tension. Bandleader Florence Shaw sounds disaffected and scattered, singing of bouncy balls and knitting circles and women in aviators firing bazookas, as she lands on one central refrain: ‘Do everything and feel nothing.’” - Stereogum

STREET DATE: APRIL 2, 2021 The last (2011) record released by The Bangles—now a trio of Susanna Hoffs and Debbi & Vicki Peterson—is one of their best, a loving paean to ‘60s pop inspired in part by Sheila Weller’s book Girls Like Us, which intertwines the stories of Laurel Canyon singer-songwriters Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon. You’ll hear plenty of that Laurel Canyon vibe on this record from these three songwriters, as well as some nods to The Bangles’ power pop past, all blessed with the vocal harmony arrangements that the group’s fans treasure. Produced by Matthew Sweet, Sweetheart of the Sun was out on vinyl for a heartbeat, with original copies costing a fortune; our Real Gone reissue—released with the full cooperation of the band—features the original album art complete with inner sleeve. THE ABC/DUNHILL SINGLES COLLECTION (2-CD Set) STREET DATE: APRIL 2, 2021 What was the hardest-rocking band ever to notch three Top Ten hits? For our money, it’s Steppenwolf. Formed from the Canadian band The Sparrow (including Dennis Edmonton a.k.a. Mars Bonfire), and led by vocalist John Kay, Steppenwolf scored with “Born to Be Wild,” “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Rock Me” in the space of nine months back in 1968-1969, and hit the charts eleven more times up though the mid-‘70s. Often tagged as a biker band—mostly due to their prominent presence on the soundtrack to Easy Rider—Steppenwolf was actually a sociallyconscious, highly political outfit, never more so than on their controversial LP Monster, one of 14 charting albums released by the band over a 20-year period. This ability to enjoy commercial success on both the single and album fronts puts them in a very rare category in the annals of rock and roll; and, unsurprisingly, their albums have been well represented in the CD reissue era. Their singles, however, have largely been unavailable on CD in their original 45 mixes, as the tapes for the singles have long been missing (legend has it Dunhill label chief Jay Lasker discarded all the label’s multi-track tapes and mono masters after having deemed them too expensive to store). But, just like on our critically-acclaimed Grass Roots singles set, engineer Aaron Kannowski has, after a worldwide search, rounded up the best sources available and put together a two-CD set that doesn’t just include the A and B-side of every Steppenwolf single on the ABC/ Dunhill label (including, for the first time ever, a decent-sounding “Magic Carpet Ride”), but of every John Kay solo single as well! And, speaking of John Kay, he sat down with co-producer Ed Osborne for a thorough, track-by-track review for the liner notes (John also requested that we use the album version of “Monster” rather than the single version, because the single is such a pieced-together “Frankenstein” job…pun intended). At 38 tracks, and featuring photos by long-time band photographers Henry Diltz and Tom O’Neal nee Gundelfinger, this is the ultimate Steppenwolf collection!

"

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, dedicated, in the words of Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension) founder Horace Tapscott, “[to play music} about depicting the lives of black people in their communities all over this country, where it has been turned around and people have been made to feel unworthy.” In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an African-American since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (19711975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020… right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson, each vinyl reissue features the original black-and-white Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power that draw a straight line between what was happening then…and what is happening right now. Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative with the release of each Black Jazz album.

GENE RUSSELL: NEW DIRECTION (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: APRIL 2, 2021 The first album released by the most sought-after label, bar none, among jazz collectors! And since keyboardist Gene Russell was at the artistic helm of Black Jazz, it was only natural that the label’s debut record featured Russell himself, with the fitting title New Direction. Oft-bootlegged, with original copies commanding princely sums, New Direction, while a fairly straight-ahead piano trio outing, sets the tone for the entire label with its modal and soul jazz flourishes, and features such sidemen as double bassist Henry “The Skipper” Franklin and drummer Steve Clover.

Saigon Kick (Limited White Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: APRIL 2, 2021

The gleefully raucous 1991 selftitled debut from this Miami band covered all the alternative and heavy metal bases, and while it didn’t score a commercial home run, it was still a prodigious clout (kick?) courtesy of guitarist/ songwriter Jason Bieler! In between classic metal tunes like “Coming Home” and “Ugly,” Saigon Kick offers everything from grunge-y punk (“What Do You Do,” “Acid Rain”) to power ballads (“Love of God”) to even a couple of quite funny pop songs (the neurotic “My Life” and the homo-erotic “Down by the Ocean”). Since it arrived in the early-‘90s “dead zone” for vinyl, Saigon Kick came out on LP only in Europe, and original copies go for a pretty penny, er, euro…our first-time U.S. vinyl release comes in a white vinyl pressing limited to just 900 copies! COWBOY: reach for the sky Cowboy’s 1970 debut features some great songs from Boyer and Talton, and has a loose, informal feel with acoustic guitars and harmonies a-plenty; over the years it’s become quite the cult item, with copies of its long, long out-of-print original CD release trading hands for well over $100. Our Real Gone reissue features notes by Scott Schinder, the original gatefold artwork (with lyrics) and photos.

COWBOY: 5’ll Getcha Ten

COWBOY: Reach for the Sky

"

Led by Scott Boyer and Tommy Talton, the Jacksonville band Cowboy was discovered by none other than Duane Allman, who, as legend has it, banged on their door at 7 am one day and asked to hear some songs. He then recommended them to Capricorn label owner Phil Walden, who sent Allman Brothers producer Johnny Sandlin to check them out; Sandlin ended up producing these first two Cowboy albums for Capricorn. Fine, soulful Southern rock, long overdue for rediscovery!

&

The Allman Brothers connection on this 1971 release is even more explicit than it was on Cowboy’s debut album; Duane Allman plays guitar on “Lookin’ for You” and dobro on “Please Be with Me,” while ABB keyboardist Chuck Leavell appears on half of the album tracks. But what makes 5’ll Getcha Ten special—and indeed what makes it many Cowboy fans’ favorite record—is the songwriting. “Please Be with Me” was covered by Eric Clapton on his classic 461 Ocean Boulevard release, and throughout the album a gentle undercurrent of spirituality courses through these beautifully played and sung songs, particularly on “What I Want Is You,” “Innocence Song,” and the title tune. Scott Schinder’s notes contain revealing quotes from Tommy Talton; we’ve also added some great period photos and provided a pristine remastering job by Maria Triana at Battery Studios in New York.

SMITH:

A GROUP CALLED SMITH/MINUS-PLUS STREET DATE: APRIL 2, 2021 Smith were discovered in an L.A. nightclub by none other than Del Shannon, who got them signed to ABC-Dunhill and arranged their smash hit cover of “Baby, It’s You.” They also boasted one of the best albeit largely unknown female singers of the ‘60s in the person of Gayle McCormick, who, with her blonde good looks and powerful, bluesy voice, seemed destined to lead Smith to big things (she did go on to record a series of solo albums for Dunhill). However, the band broke up after these two albums; this band is one of the missing links in the late-‘60s L.A. scene! Remastered by Maria Triana at Battery Studios in NYC, with liner notes by Richie Unterberger and added photos.

Their music, rooted in the songs of Adrianne Lenker, paints in vivid tones “the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else’s, and being okay with the inevitability of death,” says Adrianne. “Mythological Beauty” was the first track released from the band’s 2017 album, Capacity.

In 2008 Etienne de Rocher paused his budding career as a songwriter in the Bay Area to relocate his growing family to the fertile artistic grounds of Athens, GA. The new locale was immediately a creative inspiration. Although it would take years to complete, he began soaking up the musical energy of his new home and writing some of the songs that would become Haunted Shed’s debut Faltering Light immediately. Faltering Light is more than just a love letter to the Classic City though. It’s a love letter to life. 11 rocking, thoughtful, psychedelic, literary songs about Etienne’s experience with life raising kids, restoring homes, cooking, holidays and his inward contemplations of dreams, emotions, and nightmares.

Explosive, unpredictable, and persistently candid throughout, I Owe You Nothing is a lesson in introspection and identity. The Denton, Texas-based Record Setter are unflinchingly inventive with every new release, creating intricate compositions which balance their fierce spirit and delicate emotions. Frenzied and impassioned vocals soar over thunderous guitars, ferocious percussion, and bone-shaking low-end, comprising fervent songs that oscillate between raw powerful screamo and affective post-rock melodies. Through introspective lyricism and turbulent sonic soundscapes, I Owe You Nothing chronicles the lifelong journey of coming to terms with yourself, your anxieties, and your mistakes, ultimately rewarded by a sense of empowered independence.

“Your new favorite band.” -Washed Up “[M]elding screamo abrasion, pop-punk melody, and molten shoegaze textures, their past decade of musical and emotional repression burned off in an all-consuming blue streak.” -Stereogum, on I Owe You Nothing Record Setter’s Purge flashes with intricate guitar work, insistent hooks, and a newfound vocal and lyrical conviction that worms its way throughout the record, finding spaces to thrive in the cracks between screams and gentle whispers. The record’s centerpiece, the back-to-back emotional annvvihilation of “We Let Our Youth Fail Beautifully” and “Multiple Attempts at the Same Thing,” sparkles with crisp and technical guitar work, staccato bursts of bass noise, and an effortlessly smooth dichotomy between soft and loud dynamics that defies traditional hardcore songwriting sensibilities.

However, it is on Purge’s title track that Record Setter really finds their voice. Beginning as an ambient interlude laced with atmospheric samples, the song slowly teases itself out in fits and spurts before revealing itself as a barn-burning screamer in the emotive hardcore tradition, with Mitchell’s vocal assault occupying a tender and vulnerable space in the upper reaches of hardcore’s bitterly angry register. The expert tone-setting done by the drum work in conjunction with the rest of the band’s commitment to the dramatic changes in song structure pays off in spades and suitably sets the standard for follow-up and closer, “If You’ve Ever Wondered,” which fulfills the prior song’s promise and then some. Despite Purge’s high quality and potential, it was still released as a breakup album, coming on the heels of a hiatus and changes in the members’ personal lives. However, it quickly became apparent that fans were becoming extremely attached to Purge, and it was gaining more traction than anything the band had done before. This was for good reason-- beyond its polish and verve, Purge was also a blisteringly personal record, with the kind of lyrics that often show up as wrist tattoos and silently-screamed affirmations in the heads of fans. After witnessing the way that people were clinging to the songs, Record Setter regrouped and decided to push forward.

When Tony Molina first released Confront The Truth in 2016 it had been a long three years since his previous record (the now-classic album Dissed And Dismissed) and anticipation was definitely intense. Tony's Teenage Fanclub-meets-Replacements power-pop was informed sonically and spiritually by his many years in the SF South Bay area DIY punk scene, and the results were nothing less than thrilling. Leaving the guitar crunch behind, "Confront The Truth" confounded the desire for more of the same by spotlighting Tony's formidable songwriting with spare, mostly acoustic arrangements that owe as much to early Bee Gees and Teenage Fanclub's mellower moments as they do to Georges Harrison and Martin. The sadness of this music has precedents in pop's past and the repertoire from which he draws may be narrow, but in these songs, you hear exactly what Tony found in those influences that shaped his experience -- years upon years of focus and isolation in developing his guitar skills to speak to these truths. The main difference here is that where Tony's previous works felt casual and easy to digest, here we feel the full weight of his emotional needs pressed against the gentlest and most careful music of his career. This EP was a crucial step for Tony on his way to making 2018's brilliant album Kill The Lights and it remains his favorite of his own solo releases. Out-of-print on vinyl for several years, we're happy to bring it back now, and this time as a 12" rather than 7" to give these beautiful, delicate songs more room to breathe. Truly the kind of aural tonic we all need right now. Contact: Stephen Svacina

Re-issued here as part of the Topic Treasures series – the label's classic and notable albums expanded in deluxe format - with rare images, new liner notes (by esteemed journalist and Briggs authority, Ken Hunt). This debut album contains some of Briggs' most notable songs, including 'Blackwater Slide,' which she famously taught to Bert Jansch, (who recorded it on his 'Jack Orion' album) and 'Go Your Way,' co-written with Jansch. As with the 1971 original, the sleeve here contains song notes by the highly-regarded English folk singer and collector of folk songs, A.L. Lloyd.

Anne Briggs began singing in local folk clubs in her teens. In 1962, she became part of the Centre 42 - a leftist group of artists, writers, actors and musicians whose aim was to make arts and culture accessible to the masses. Ewan MacColl first heard Briggs' remarkable voice and persuaded her to join the group and tour. There Briggs met MacColl's comrade, A.L. 'Bert' Lloyd who became her mentor, producing her debut EP, 'The Hazards Of Love,' and recording Briggs for Topic landmark albums, 'The Iron Muse' and 'The Bird In The Bush.' Briggs went on to record a follow-up album, 'The Time Has Come,' for CBS which, at the time, sold poorly and was rapidly deleted. Two years later, she recorded again but blocked the subsequent album's release, disheartened as she was by her singing. She retired from the limelight, seemingly for good, although Topic’s 2019 re-issue of this debut heralded a huge resurgence of media and fan interest in this most reclusive of folk doyennes. “Listen closely and marvel. 9/10” – UNCUT “All-in-all, this is one of the most significant recordings of the period. This is music to pass on to the next generations.” - FOLKRADIO “Make room for it on your shelf and between your ears. 5/5” - SONGLINES “It sounds as fresh and lucid now as it did in 1971. 4/5” – RNR

UPC:195269061388

Original Mind is a collective of experienced improvisers from the Twin Cities of Minnesota. The name refers to a Buddhist concept for the consciousness that underlies the everyday thoughts and narratives that usually dominate our thinking about the world and people around us. Similarly, the music of Original Mind is spontaneous, unplanned, and unbound by any of the rules underlying the various styles and genres of music. The only rules for Original Mind's music are deep listening and selfless contribution to the conversation of sound and feeling. While this music falls generally under the rubric of free or avant garde jazz, the music on You Know When It's Time is approachable for any audience. The music flows in an easily understood manner as the musicians interact in sonic conversation. This approach to the music wasn't planned or discussed - it's what happens when these musicians get together. Bassist Dick Studer has been performing all kinds of music since the late 1960’s. Since the late 1970’s he has concentrated primarily on free, spontaneous and original music. He was awarded Special Recognition by the Minnesota Jazz Music Awards in 1987 as Avant-garde Jazz Bassist. Drummer Steve Hirsh grew up with the British invasion, Motown and Stax/Volt. At 10 years old, he started guitar lessons at a neighborhood community center. In junior high he played alto sax in band, until he got braces and his orthodontist said a reed instrument would be bad for his overbite. So he switched to the drums, and began a 50+ year love affair and a quest to make music on the drumset. Saxophonist Brad Holden has been part of the Twin Cities music scene for over 30 years. During that time, Brad has played in a wide variety of musical settings, working mostly in jazz, ranging from the great American Songbook to free improvisation.

GHLOW - SLASH AND BURN LP PNKSLM087-LP Street date: April 2, 2021 Formats: 12” black vinyl & digital File under: Alternative / Indie UPC (vinyl): 634457042599

Tracklist: 1. Not Fit For This 2. Mess With Me 3. Take It 4. Sleep 5. Slash and Burn 6. Hollow 7. Hold On 8. Spit

Russian-Swedish duo GHLOW have announced that their debut album ‘Slash and Burn’ will be released 02 April 2021 via underground icons PNKSLM Recordings. The album is a thrilling clash of punk and electronica that fizzes with a furious energy and is telling of its creators’ unique musical and artistic journeys. For Emille de Blanche and Nikolay Evdokimov, their first album as GHLOW represents a rebirth. Both are multidisciplinary creatives; de Blanche works primarily in sculpture, whilst Evdokimov is a tattoo artist. Both have colourful musical backgrounds stretching back decades; de Blanche is a former child prodigy violinist who took up the instrument at the age of two, while Evdokimov, a Russian native, formed his first, politically-charged bands in the early nineties, against the backdrop of the fall of the Soviet Union. “We came up with a lot of ideas we wanted to develop,” explains de Blanche of their initial union. Her previous bands had seen her turn her hand to everything from post-rock to hip hop. “We realised that, together, we could pursue them. We both wanted to experiment. There had always been weird, genre-bending stuff we’d wanted to try out in previous bands, but we couldn’t get whoever we’d been working with to go with it. Now, we could just put all of that away and follow our instincts.” de Blanche’s razor-sharp lyricism blends the personal and political to stirring effect, and ‘Slash and Burn’ could be read as a cutting treatise on Sweden in 2020. She’s keen to leave the interpretation to the listener, though, and the pair insist that her words are only one part of what is a scorched-earth mission statement - a manifesto announcing a powerful new moment both for themselves and for rock music. “There’s a rawness and a violence to ‘Slash and Burn’, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing,” says Evdokimov. “It’s about starting again. You might be chopping things down, or setting fire to something, but that’s a reset - something positive comes out of the flames.” PNKSLM Recordings P.O. Alien Stories

Celebrated violin duo String Noise is recognized for their distinct blend of disparate genres, from arrangements of songs by punk legends to conceptual minimalist treatises by Alvin Lucier. An optimistic development from the global health pandemic and the increased attention on human rights issues and racial equality that came about through public embrace of the Black Lives Matter movement, this latest project highlights the work of five African American composer-performers. From the experimental works of Lester St. Louis and Jessie Cox to the jazz and folk elements of the works by Jonathan Finlayson and Anaïs Maviel, to the melodic hockets of Charles Overton’s piece, this album provides an expansive vision of contemporary trends in black notated music.

Helicon - Fuzz Club Session Fuzz Club LP FCS15LP

5060467886451

Available on black vinyl. Following this year's 'This Can Only Lead To Chaos' LP, Glasgow's Helicon are gearing up to release a Fuzz Club Session. Recorded live at Dystopia Studios with their trusted producer Luigi Pasquini (Trembling Bells, The Cosmic Dead) and released on 180gm vinyl alongside a series of videos, the LP captures the band's heady psych-rock sound at its finest: a far-out amalgamation of strung-out sitars, riotous walls of fuzzy feedback and cosmic synths that's all bolstered by the live energy that the band are renowned for and has been impossible to justly capture on wax, until now. As well as comprising tracks from their recent full-length, 'This Can Only Lead To Chaos' – 'The Sun Also Rises', 'In The End', 'Sound of Confession' (complete with a mesmerising piano intro) and 'What You Love Will Kill You' – the Fuzz Club Session also features two previously unreleased songs, 'Permo' and 'Il Bacio Di Guida'. 1) Intro / Sound of Confession 2) In The End 3) The Sun Also Rises 4) Permo 5) Il Bacio Di Giuda 6) What You Love Will Kill You

Urdog Long Shadows: 2003–2006

Rocket Recordings LP LAUNCH207 5055869572859 “The rumors are true; Providence, Rhode Island is permeated with a mysterious energy”. So says Dave Litifreri, guitarist and vocalist of Urdog. “Some of us focused this energy, learned to live with the ghosts and tell their story.” It’s a story chronicled on Long Shadows, the new Urdog retrospective on Rocket Recordings - the work of a mercurial band whose music may have been summoned from fog and ghosts, yet possesses considerable staying power beyond their brief time on the planet. “We were influenced by the horror of late-capitalism in general every day” says drummer and vocalist Erin Rosenthal, “This glued and glues us together, also love of bicycles, french fries and faerie folk. Big influences for me were Robert Wyatt, Incredible String Band, Dagmar Krause, but especially This Heat, Riot Grrrl and 90’s hardcore.” From such disparate inspiration came psychically heavy jams and wild improvisational voyages from this triumvirate which chart an instinctive and wild journey, drawing the interplanetary dots between early ‘70s freak-flag-waving transgressions and the folk-tinged frontiers of the early 21st century US underground. Mantric repetition, ceremonial ambience and fuzz/wah tinged blowouts take equal prominence in this dreamlike realm. Drawing the interplanetary dots between the drone ’n’ klang of Amon Düül II and the cultish hallucinations of Sunburned Hand Of The Man, and replete with both an earthiness of approach and a powerful celestial intensity. “We used our intuitive connection to let three distinct voices be heard” reflects Dave. “There was no foundation; they supported each other. Once that is achieved, a vibe develops. Getting into the space of a song is something you can’t notate. We had the keys, but getting to the door was the trick. Some nights we got all the way through the roof to the stars.” A:01. The Open: Intro 02. Ice on Water 03. Ani Nie Ma 04: The Open: Extract B: 01. Eyelid of Moon 02. DMZ 03: Zombie Cloud

Djinn - Transmission

DJINN - the Swedish collective featuring members of Hills and GOAT in their ranks - have proven themselves a potent and mysterious force. Following the ‘Avant De Servir’ tape which was released on Swedish label Zeon Light last year, ‘Transmission’ is a still more intrepid step into new terrain for DJINN - the mantric rhythms are hypnotic here, the freeform extrapolations hit new peaks of vivid abandon, and the moments of calm are blissfully meditative. Yet their sound palette extends into refreshing collisions of intent and metaphysical intensity that echo across the psychic landscapes of Sunburned Hand Of The Man-style freak-folk, as well as the polylingual fusion of jazz, European and Asian music that Don Cherry essayed on 1969’s ‘Eternal Rhythm’ and 1973’s ‘Organic Music Society’. Amidst these intoxicating and richly eclectic soundworlds, the band are just as comfortable invoking Popol Vuh (as on the mellotronabetted title track) Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the lineage of Swedish underground music that found epiphanies in the radical folk-psych of Arbete Och Fritid whilst also sounding - crucially - like no-one but themselves. For all the farreaching explorations of altered states by which DJINN set out their stall, this collection of mystical headspaces - in all its fearless and feral glory - is proof positive that the band’s journey has only just begun. This transmission is set to ring out across dimensions unknown.

Limited to 400 copies on color vinyl comes with a download code that also contains as a bonus their 2020 ‘Avant De Servir

Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood LIVE Clarinetist, composer, singer & spiritual jazz soothsayer Angel Bat Dawid presents this powerful live document alongside her band, Tha Brothahood. LIVE was mostly recorded on November 1st, 2019, at Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin, Germany, during the 2019 edition of JazzFest Berlin. For Angel and Tha Brothahood – which includes Deacon Otis Cooke (vocals, synth), Viktor Le Givens (vocals, auxiliary instruments), Xristian Espinoza (tenor sax, percussion), Norman W. Long (electronics, synths), Dr. Adam Zanolini (double bass, bass guitar, soprano sax, flute, percussion), Isaiah Collier (drums), and Asher Gamedze (drums) – it was the first stop of their first European tour. Angel and her band experienced a number of difficult, racially charged interactions during their two days in Berlin. But despite, or perhaps in light of the difficulties they faced, they performed a set at Berliner Festspiele that Angel considers to be one of their best ever. “The show was very deep, and really helped me to process all the rage, and uncomfortable things I was feeling... It made me think of all the artists of the past who endured way more than I ever will with this music industry. It was a very freeing and beautiful show… we played our ass off!!” IMRC0037 Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood LIVE Format/Release Date: 2xLP & CD – April 9th, 2021 RIYL: Nina Simone, Funkadelic, Shabazz Palaces, Alice Coltrane, Iggy Pop, Sun Ra, Phil Cohran, Archie Shepp, Moor Mother, Irreversible Entanglements

With her eclectic band, it’s a brilliant document of how free jazz functions as both exploration and exorcism.” – Pitchfork (Best New Music, 8.4) “Hear her guttural, despairing exhortations and try not to be shaken to the core.” – NPR (Best of the Year in Protest Music) “LIVE captures a band working through the all-consuming grief of racism using the exorcising powers of experimental jazz and avant-garde improvisation.” – WIRE (Best Releases of the Year, #34)

SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH APRIL 9TH, 2021 • SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE's fourth album and Saddle Creek debut. • LP pressed on tan vinyl. • Indie-exclusive LP limited to 500 copies pressed on maroon, deep purple, and coke bottle clear marbled vinyl. • LP includes digital download. RIYL: Oneohtrix Point Never, Toro y Moi, Animal Collective, Palm, Death Grips, The Garden Ever since SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE released their self-titled debut in 2014, they’ve developed a reputation for being your favorite band’s favorite band. Theirs is the music of immersion, of confrontation, the kind that makes a listener stop and wonder, “How are they even doing that?” And as the years wear on, that sense of bafflement has made room for SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE to quietly but steadily ascend, with their most recent album, 2018’s Hypnic Jerks, leaving them poised on the precipice of wider recognition. On April 9th, SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE will release their fourth album and Saddle Creek debut, ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH. The album signals new chapters for the band on multiple fronts, being the first to feature their new three-piece lineup, as well as the first to be entirely self-recorded and produced. Guitarist/vocalist Zack Schwartz and bassist/vocalist Rivka Ravede are now joined by new member Corey Wichlin, a multi-instrumentalist who relocated from Chicago to the band’s home territory of Philadelphia last year. In the spring of 2020, the trio began to write their new album at a distance by emailing files back and forth. “The process of making this album was basically the exact opposite of our experience creating Hypnic Jerks,” Schwartz explains. “We had to record that in seven days, because that was the studio time we had, whereas ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH was made over the course of three, four months.” An abundance of time wasn’t the only difference. Recording remotely offered the band an incentive to experiment with new possibilities for their sound, resulting in an album that is unlike any SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE has released before. Once the band finished recording and mixing the album digitally, they mastered it to tape, lending the collection a textured, dimensional quality. “We knew we wanted to use some new instrumental elements on this album,” Wichlin says. “We're not going fully electronic,” Schwartz adds, “But guitar, bass, drums just get kind of monotonous.” Though ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH doesn’t cohere in a single, unifying theme, the band samples old obscure commercials throughout, many of which guided the process of writing a song instead of serving as an appendage. Schwartz describes his songwriting process as a stream-of-consciousness, while Ravede asserts that she doesn’t typically write vocal parts with any specific intention in mind. “When I write, the narrative usually doesn’t present itself until after the song is done. And even then, it depends on how the listener interprets the words,” she reflects. Regardless of how dreamlike SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE’s lyrics can be, reality rears its head throughout ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH. The album isn’t a metamorphosis, it’s simply the newest iteration of a longstanding project. “There’s a line in the Bee Gees documentary that I think applies to us. I’ll paraphrase: ‘We may not have always connected, but we always stuck around,’” Ravede says. Schwartz jumps in, “SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE: we’re still here.” LP tan vinyl

▶ Originally released in 1984, ‘Pop’ is the only studio album from Tones On Tail, which was a side project of Bauhaus members Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins along with Glenn Campling.

This standard edition follows a previously sold-out Record Store Day edition. The audio was cut from the original analog master. “Tones On Tail were embraced by small pockets around the globe lamenting the Bauhaus fall out, but within those pockets remained a steadfastly loyal fan base. Impossibly English, an enigma, and have remained that way, call them niche, odd, weird, whacky, whatever but one thing they never were was conventional. Keys, the debut album from Bill MacKay and Nathan Bowles, is, on first blush, a collection of guitar and banjo duets — but from the opening moment, it is clear that Bill and Nathan’s agreedupon duo is a living organism, growing as it goes. Behind the stately figures of “Idumea,” a 19th-century southern hymnal played out on their stringed instruments, a low organ drone hums persistently, signaling that this music, while coming from traditional places, is asking more of itself, seeking sparks of inspiration to light the path forward. Bill and Nathan met a few years back, if time has any meaning. It didn’t seem to at the time — after the first night they hung out, it felt as if they’d known each other for awhile already. A year later (2018, if you’re counting), they were booked as a duo at Cropped Out. Preparing for playing the show involved a correspondence exchanging lots of provisional ideas, thoughts and music back and forth from Chicago to Durham, North Carolina, then dashing through the ideas again on the festival grounds an hour before the show. From this seemingly hectic preparation, their playing that night was remarkably serene, a spiritual treatise clothed in the casual and natural manner of the proverbial porch-, or in this case, riverside-jam, as the stage literally straddled the edge of the Ohio River! It was a stellar, simpatico first moment that asked for more

moments like it. After several more sets the following year, they felt ready to roll tape (as the saying goes) and chose to do so in Chicago, with Nick Broste at The Shape Shoppe (RIP!). Again, an easy rapport prevailed, allowing them to work through their collected ideas quickly and freely, with the moments of spontaneous decision that can come only with comfort and trust in each other’s presence. Throughout Keys, Bill and Nathan propel their power-folk engine with intent and feeling, joy and solemnity, as images of wariness, wonder, anger, deliberation, forgiveness, trust and devotion rise up from the music and roll it forward into the unknown, a place we can sense both players are happy to go. Eight of the ten songs featured are originals, with the other two coming from different centuries than this one. The diversity of song is matched by the instrumentation: in addition to Bill’s guitar and Nathan’s banjo, they add voice, piano, percussion, pump organ, requinto and electric organ to the richness and rusticity, the traditionalism and open space of the compositions. The sound of this music in the 21st century has a yearning quality, sometimes melancholy, sometimes rambunctious, but always reaching for something in between the strings, asking eternal questions that have been wondered and remain unknown: Where are we headed? What are we leaving behind? What deserves to be jettisoned, what held onto? When sitting together again to play music, who are we playing for? And for what purpose, to what ends? Will our ears be ready to hear it, whatever it is? With Keys, Bill MacKay and Nathan Bowles have begun to ask and answer these queries musically, in a unique, unified declamation.

From the many musical lives of artist Glenn Donaldson emerges The Reds, Pinks and Purples, a project that sifts out the purest elements of pop music and in the process chronicles the point of view of an assiduous songwriter. His new album Uncommon Weather is both an elusive portrait of San Francisco –– during one of its fluctuations as an untenable place for musicians and artists –– and also a self-portrait of a songwriter who has dispatched another treasured collection of timeless sounding DIY-pop songs.

Self-recorded and mostly self-performed, the music on "Uncommon Weather" continuously reckons with the influence of The Television Personalities' Dan Treacy, whose own forays into drum-machines, echo, and reverb in the early 1990s is an important reference point. Paul Weller, Robert Smith, and Sarah Records also come to mind. The album arrives with grateful timing, quick on the heels of the recent EP You Might Be Happy Someday and alleviating, for a brief window at least, whatever it is that keeps us coming back to this elemental music. Donaldson imagines his listeners are just like himself: fascinated and addicted to the spiritual power of uncomplicated pop classics. Contact: Stephen Svacina

Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore

GHOST FORESTS

LP-TLR-125x (Coke bottle clear LP reissue) Street Date: April 9, 2021 Format: LP gatefold (with download) List Price: $21.99 UPC: 711574914319

Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore’s collective work—as solo artists, band members, and collaborators—could fill a small record collection. Despite this productivity, these two long-time friends have never recorded an entire album focused exclusively on their unique talents. Ghost Forests mysteriously, thrillingly fills that void. Independently, Baird and Lattimore have each cultivated highly individual and idiosyncratic tools of expression. Baird’s timeless and soaring voice, guitar, and drums have underpinned pastoral and folk rock explorations as a soloist and in band settings with Espers and Heron Oblivion. Lattimore’s albums of enigmatic, spectral experimental harp sounds move and unfold like films and nature itself. The list of artists that have called upon their voices, talents, and visions to enrich their own work is expansive—a virtual pocket encyclopedia of contemporary indie and experimental musicians. Over the course of Ghost Forests’ six collaborative compositions we hear deeply sympathetic conversations between the two artists. With access to a deep pool of shared influences, these two friends assembled a collection of sounds conjured from harp, guitar (both acoustic and electric), synths, the human voice, and a shared poetic language. Baird and Lattimore’s subjects range from the sound of light on water, seismic geopolitical anxiety, the smog-exploded sunsets of Don Dudley’s paintings, and vertigo from their respective relocations to San Francisco and Los Angeles from their once-shared home in Philadelphia. The synthesis of their vision welcomes listeners who might have been familiar with only one of the performer’s solo oeuvres. It also speaks to long-time fans both artists who have long wondered what this dream collaboration might yield. Steve Gunn has long known Baird and Lattimore and worked with both on his own albums. He says “Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore are two musicians that I greatly admire. Ghost Forests is an ace meld of their abilities; Meg’s guitar and voice, and Mary’s harp lead each other (and us) into further regions of the strata. With each song you can hear this remarkable kinship. I’m thankful for this soundtrack.” Ghost Forests’ musical conversations are intimate, fluid, effortless and spontaneous. They’re filled with the euphoria of creation and, at times, they articulate hard truths and tangled emotions with an ease only trusted friends can manage. The songs alternate between extended ethereal instrumental excursions, gauzy and dreamy pop, blown-out Bull of the Woods heavy haze, and modern reimaginations of epic traditional balladry—all while touching on the strange and otherworldly places between these stations. With Ghost Forests Baird and Lattimore have given us all a timeless gift that generously rewards immersion and deep investigation. It is our collective good fortune as listeners that we are able to eavesdrop on their conversation through these songs. It is also a wonder to hear two unique artists interact to such beautifully original ends.

AVL

LP-NRR-001 Street Date: April 9, 2021 *INDIE RETAIL EXCLUSIVE* Format: LP UPC: 634457049314

On our first album together, New Rain Duets (also recorded live), Mary and I were improvising but going in we had a basic structure and melodic idea laid out for each of the four parts. In the Spring of 2019 we booked a short tour to support the release of that record, but unlike every tour I’ve ever been a part of, we were not going to be playing songs from the album we were promoting. For me this was a terrifying idea, but ultimately liberating, as it meant that each show we were starting from a blank slate with no expectations except to (hopefully) make something beautiful. Mary and I talked about the need for this kind of feeling in music then, and I find it even more important now, one long year later. Unique moments of synchronicity stand out in my mind from all four of the shows we did, when some odd sound would leap out of a synthesizer or Mary would hit a great bass not at the same time as the Casio spat out a high distorted version of the same note; it was a truly fun experience. And playing with Mary means that beauty is going to be happening more often than not. But the last show of the tour, in a former church in Asheville, was perhaps my favorite and we were lucky that Jeff and Keith at Ambrose West were recording that evening. -Mac McCaughan CREDITS - AVL was recorded live May 5, 2019 at Ambrose West, Asheville, NC - Mary Lattimore – harp & effects - Mac McCaughan – synthesizers & sampling - recorded and transferred by: Jeff Whitworth (Worthwhile Sounds) - FOH audio engineer: Keith Harry (Ambrose West) - Mastered by Chris Boerner

American Dreams Records CLAIRE ROUSAY A SOFTER FOCUS Experimental musician Claire Rousay and visual artist Dani Toral have been in each others’ orbit since young adulthood in San Antonio, but it took a decade for them to find A Softer Focus. Before Rousay had put her compositional gray matter to task for the album’s music, she knew she wanted to work with Toral- being familiar with her past work centering her Mexican heritage. Toral’s vibrant color palette and reinterpretations of comfort in oneself and the natural, vegetative world connected easily with her explorations in communication and intimacy. Historically, Rousay primarily operated in non-melodic experimental music, sculpting compositions from obsessive field recordings, inserting voice-to-text, percussion played via text message sounds, conversations, and daily life. By contrast, the six-song collection and collaborative project A Softer Focus is lush and almost entirely melodic, even veering into pop at a couple points. Though Rousay created the album’s recordings, Toral created the artwork and visual narrative for the album - the recurring floral motifs and designs, the photography, the video work, and the ceramic whistles

that accompany a special edition of the vinyl record. She also assisted in crafting the linguistic framework, assisting with song titles, and coming up with the name of the album - “A Softer Focus” became the album’s central motif, alluding to the meditative or recollective-dream state of creating. Toral, being primarily a painter and ceramicist, took on this challenge of working digitally to create a visual language accompanying the music. She wanted to explore the feelings of present familiarity she felt with Rousay, through warm light and glow while mimicking the flow of the music using her organic soft shapes melding together and creating a portal-like entry to the album. Fittingly, the songs gently amble from one to the next, creating a syrupy, hypnagogic narrative that uses string sections, field recordings, and vocals to touch upon love, friendship, endurance, and transcendence - sounding like what living inside a brain must feel like, oscillating on how far to let its guest in.

A Softer Focus is an exciting next step for both Rousay’s compositional practice and Toral’s visual work, showcasing both artists venturing into new territories, and coming out the other side with strengthened friendship and impactful creation. It’s a testament to their trust, playfulness, and candor that we’re allowed to come along for the ride.

Songs like “Peak Chroma” and “Stoned Gesture” are the closest Rousay’s gotten to pop, and are signposts of her growing compositional prowess. It’s on the third

track “Peak Chroma” that the first and most wonderful surprise of A Softer Focus arises. The song begins with an airy drone that cuts out right as Rousay’s tastefully autotuned voice emerges alongside cello from Chicago musician Lia Kohl. “Stoned Gesture” also boasts autotuned vocals, though it is a more overtly melancholy composition, perhaps even dirge-like while Rousay brings in field recordings of percussive fireworks that dart around another of clinking ice in a glass.

Crucial questions around healing, cultural identity, and disability are among the many subjects visited by Thanya Iyer's sophomore album, KIND. Although represented by a concise title, KIND explores an expansive universe where Iyer and her band examine interpersonal relationships, ideas of home and destination, and our collective responsibilities to one another. To aid in this journey of big, difficult questions, Iyer enlists the help of a huge cast of musicians, with guest features ranging from brass trios, vocal sextets, flautists, and harpists. Underscoring its explorative nature, the constant movement of KIND melds the sounds of experimental pop and improv into a magical amalgam that teems with flashes of jazz and nuanced electronics. Iyer's rhythm section pulsates with genre-defying palettes of blips and skitters that twist elegantly into the melodic voices of interlocking synth, strings, and piano, all led by Iyer's enrapturing lilt. The rhythmic direction of bassist Alexander Kasirer-Smibert and percussionist Daniel Gélinas clears a navigable path in an otherwise unnavigable setting, built on the pair's understated yet intriguing expertise.

LUXURY One-Sided EP

btv121

Luxury began in the '90s in a small town outside of Atlanta incorporating their love for The Smiths, Dischord Records punk, and literature to create their energetic brand of Brit-pop inspired indie rock. Known for their intense and energetic live shows, they released a string of four full-length albums in the late '90s/early '00s before a long hiatus. This One-Sided EP revisits their 2018 comeback album Trophies, offering a single from that album along with unreleased tracks and demos from those sessions. Luxury includes three Orthodox priests as members with lyrics often referencing their favorite poets and writers from Ginsberg to Rilke to Morrissey and exploring what it means to be fully human, faults and failures and all.

Luxury’s One-Sided EP on Burnt Toast Vinyl features the single “Parallel Love” from their 2018 album Trophies. It showcases some of the powerful melodies and bombastic sound and swagger that Luxury is known for. The EP also includes two unreleased tracks from the Trophies sessions: “UnSavage”, a song which hearkens back to the band’s punk roots and is lyrically concerned with the idea of protest in the modern world, and “Our Hearts Are Broken”, a song that displays the polar opposite in terms of sound and feel with a simple piano arrangement and lyrics that probe the questions of life. The EP also includes a demo version of the first track on Trophies, “Ginsberg Reading ‘Howl’” which reveals the origin of a song that ended up being much more aggressive than originally conceived, which is typical for many Luxury songs. The acoustic Bowie-esque feel of the demo eventually gave way to a faster, harder, and more aggressive feel. The last song is a demo of “Here and Hereafter” written for the Trophies sessions but never released until now. Luxury has been making music since they released their first record Amazing & Thankyou in 1995. Their existence has been unique in their nearly thirty-year history. Following the release of their debut record, a near fatal car accident while on tour changed their trajectory permanently. While pursuing other non-musical careers (three of the members are now Orthodox priests), they have continued to remain close personally and musically, releasing four additional studio length albums (The Latest & The Greatest in 1997, Luxury in 1999, Health & Sport in 2003, and Trophies in 2018) and a variety of solo material from several band members. Their latest release with Burnt Toast Vinyl is a one-sided EP featuring tracks from their last album Trophies released in 2018. The recording of Trophies was documented along with the band’s entire history in the award-winning documentary film Parallel Love, directed by Matt Hinton. With new material written and ready for the studio in 2021, Luxury looks to continue along their path of fidelity to musical creativity and an independent vision of how to live that out. “[Trophies is] gorgeous and feral, just like Luxury's greatest, but with an insight that's lived in, awake with epiphanies.” – Lars Gotrich, NPR All Songs Considered “The LP’s first single, “Un-Savage,”...is a raucous, rollicking number that shows off the band’s strengths, from their punchy guitar riffs to Lee Bozeman’s rich vocals.” – Jason Morehead, Opus Zine Distributed by Redeye, www.redeyeworldwide.com 505 Eno St, Hillsborough, NC 27278 Will Savery, will@redeyeworldwide.com, 877.REDEYE1 Burnt Toast Vinyl, www.burnttoastvinyl.com PO Box 42188 Philadelphia PA 19101 Scott Hatch, btv@burnttoastvinyl.com, 215.353.0990
