AFRIRAMPO KORE GA MAYAKU DA TZA CD 7258 New Japan Oni, Pikachu. I Did Are * O * Kairaku Do Re Mi * Want You * I Am Bird * Pekkopa In Brooklyn * Nakimushikemushi Good Bye! * Kui! Kui! * On Ska To Paar Ya * Hadaka * Matane FOCUS ON A TZADIK CLASSIC Another exciting unit out of the infamous Osaka underground rock scene. Close friends with the Boredoms and Acid Mother’s Temple, Afrirampo is a bizarre duo of two twenty year old girls who sing and play guitar and drums like no one else. Scantily clad in outrageous costumes, alternately kicking, screaming and caressing their instruments with an animalistic passion, this extreme and original band is the natural inheritor of the Boredoms legacy. Eleven songs about love, sex and death. “This is poison.”

STEVE EARLE

&

THE DUKES

Present “J.T.” - March 19, 2021 TRACK LIST

I Don’t Care Ain’t Glad I’m Leaving Maria Far Away In Another Town They Killed John Henry Turn Out My Lights Lone Pine Hill Champagne Corolla The Saint Of Lost Causes Harlem River Blues Last Words On August 20, 2020 the world lost an amazing light with the passing of Justin Townes Earle. Justin was a vibrant songwriter who could play the blues, country, and rock n roll all in the same song. In his short career, Justin released eight albums and one EP that all manage to sound classic and yet inventive. Justin’s father, Steve Earle, pays tribute to his son by recording an album of songs written by Justin titled, J.T. The album consists of ten Justin Townes Earle songs as well as one song written by Mr. Earle shortly after Justin’s passing. J.T. features fan favorites such as “Harlem River Blues,” “Far Away In Another Town” and “Champagne Corolla” along with lyrically heavy songs like, “The Saint of Lost Causes” and “Turn Out My Lights.” J.T. is a loving tribute to a loved son and beautiful songsmith who left this earth too early. But in his wake, Justin left a wealth of beauty. All proceeds from this release will be put into a trust for Justin’s 3 year old daughter, Etta.

JOHN ZORN TERESA DE AVILA TZA CD 8379 Archival Series Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Gyan Riley. Devotion * El Castillo Interior * A Blessing of Tears * Danza Estática * An Embarrassment of Raptures * Teresa * El Camino * The Sweetness of this Excessive Pain * Marrano * Levitations Preceded by Nove Cantici per Francesco d’Assisi and Virtue (for Julian of Norwich), Teresa de Ávila is the third and final CD in Zorn’s trilogy inspired by towering figures of Christian mysticism. Written for the all-star acoustic guitar trio of Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Gyan Riley whose performances are steeped in a feeling of love and mutual respect, the music is both beautifully simple and strangely complex, drawing equally on classical modernism, bluegrass, jazz, Jewish and renaissance music. Filled with compositional surprises, mysterious moods, beautiful harmonies and a stunning lyricism, Teresa de Ávila is a must-have for all fans of acoustic guitar music. This is one of the most personal and varied books of music Zorn has yet written—a lovely tribute to the enduring legacy of one of the world’s most beloved spiritual figures. Includes an extended appreciation by renown philosopher Arnold Davidson.

“ARENA-SIZE ROCK ... MASQUERADING AS A WARM, THOUGHTFUL 1980S-STYLED INDIE ROCK” THE NEW YORK TIMES “HOW DOES A BAND GET THIS GOOD, THIS QUICKLY?” BILLBOARD OVERVIEW In the fall of 2019, Middle Kids (Hannah Joy, Tim Fitz & Harry Day) were recording Today We’re The Greatest -- their sophomore album -- when they folded a precious sound into a brand new track. Lead singer and songwriter Joy was a few months into her pregnancy with her first child, and she and Fitz, her husband and bandmate, had an idea: they recorded her 20-week sonogram, and wove the gentle, rapid thump of their baby boy’s beating heart into the last 20 seconds of “Run With You,” an exuberant declaration of devotion. It’s a lovely and unexpected choice, one that stuns with its casual intimacy -- and it’s perfectly at home on Today We’re The Greatest, the Sydney pop-rock trio’s most personal and courageous effort to date. The album begins and ends with acoustic tones, but Middle Kids relished in exploring the space between this intensity and an explosive vivacity that never burns out of control, from the brassy climax of “Questions” to the starkly confessional quality of “Some People Stay in Our Hearts Forever” and the insistent gallop of “R U 4 Me?.”

Today We’re The Greatest is the open, uninhibited product of fearless collaboration: these breakthroughs wouldn’t have occurred had Joy not pushed herself to plumb new, personal depths in her lyrics, or if Fitz and Day hadn’t completed them with their instrumental flourishes. From the first note to the closing title track, Middle Kids are building on the strong foundation of Lost Friends, their debut album, while exploring the possibilities and beautiful contradictions in every note.

NEW AGE STEPPERS

New Age Steppers The landmark first album on the On-U Sound label, this self-titled debut announced a gathering of the tribes: producer Adrian Sherwood bringing together members of the Slits, the Pop Group, the Flying Lizards and the Raincoats and getting them to collaborate with the likes of the Roots Radics’ Style Scott, Creation Rebel’s Crucial Tony, and Aswad’s George Oban to form a potent post-punk/dub fusion. The albums two highest peaks are brilliantly realised interpretations of Jamaican classics Junior Byles’ “Fade Away” and Bim Sherman’s “Love Forever”, Ari Up’s vocal transporting the dread warning and lovers rock vibes to the icy hallways of early-80s London squatland. Elsewhere Mark Stewart marshalls an early version of his “Crazy Dreams and High Ideals” (later re-versioned with the Maffia), music journalist Vivien Goldman voices caustic album closer “Private Armies” (originally a b-side to her Launderette single), and all sorts of strange noises and rhythmic murk bridge the gaps, the instrumentals falling somewhere between a late night studio session at Channel One and the kinds of experimental soundscapes being explored at the time by Industrial Records. A certified classic of the era back on wax for the first time in 40 years and an essential addition to any post-punk record collection. Includes download card and printed inner with new sleevenotes and interviews by Oli Warwick.

NEW AGE STEPPERS

Action Battlefield The quickfire follow-up to the New Age Stepper’s self-titled debut, this set was also issued in 1981. A perhaps more melodic and accessible record than its predecessor, the bulk of the album is versions of tunes sourced from reggae imports of the period, featuring radical interpretations of songs by Bim Sherman, Horace Andy and B.B. Seaton. Ari Up of the Slits takes more of a frontwoman role here, singing lead on most tracks, and bringing a lot of her own indomitable personality to bear on the material, even breaking briefly into German for her take on “Problems”! It also features the vocal debut of a very young Neneh Cherry on “My Love”. The rhythms are rock solid, laid down by the crack team of Eskimo Fox, Crucial Tony and George Oban, having honed their skills on sides by Creation Rebel and Aswad, with everything expertly dubbed through the mixing desk of Adrian Sherwood. First time available on vinyl for 40 years, includes download card and printed inner featuring new sleevenotes and interviews by Oli Warwick.

NEW AGE STEPPERS

Foundation Steppers The third New Age Steppers arrived in 1983 and marked a sea change in approach, a warmer sounding record than the two thrilling-but-abrasive LPs that had preceded it. Part of this was down to frontwoman Ari Up moving to Jamaica and instigating proceedings with a session at the legendary Channel One with Style Scott and a JA horn section, before bringing the tapes back to London for Adrian Sherwood to work on. The other big factor was bringing in Bim Sherman to step up to the mic on several tracks, after interpreting some of his material on the previous albums. His distinctive croon works as the perfect foil to Ari’s own vocal takes, and the resulting album is perhaps the closest the collective got to laying down an album that is identifiably roots reggae, albeit still breaking tradition with colourful synth tones and a post-punk production sensibility. First time available on vinyl since original release, includes download card and printed inner featuring new sleevenotes and interviews by Oli Warwick.

NEW AGE STEPPERS Avant Gardening Rare dubs, version excursions and unreleased tracks from the vault 1980 - 1983. In the tradition of archival On-U Sound compilations of recent years such as the Return Of The Crocodile and Churchical Chant Of The Iyabinghi sets for African Head Charge; and the Displaced Masters LP of early Dub Synidcate rarities, we’ve gone through the tape vaults to put together this special record of unreleased versions and rarities from the white hot early days of the New Age Steppers, the group that launched the On-U Sound label by appearing on both the first single and album. Highlights include a restored track from their infamous and long-lost 1983 John Peel session (an ebullient cover of Atlantic Starr’s “Send For Me” featuring a beautifully spirited vocal performance from the much-missed Ari Up), the Jah Woosh deejay cut of “Love Forever”, some rare dubs previously only available on Japanese import CDs, all bookended by two very different takes on Chaka Khan’s “Some Love”. An essential set for collectors of post-punk, dub and other outernational sounds. Includes download card and printed inner featuring new sleevenotes and interviews by Oli Warwick.

NEW AGE STEPPERS Love Forever

Love Forever was issued posthumously in 2012, following the untimely passing of Ari Up two years before.Like the preceding New Age Steppers album from 1983, it was started in Jamaica and completed in London, producer Adrian Sherwood wishing to complete the work they had started and to pay appropriate tribute to his longtime friend. The original Steppers records were heavily influenced by the Jamaican music coming into the UK on import 12”s at the time, and Love Forever updates that approach, with nods to dancehall and bashment. Other tracks such as single “My Nerves” recall Ari Up’s work with The Slits, as well as more modern firebrands such as Atari Teenage Riot or Le Tigre. Dub Syndicate provide the backing on the irreverent “The Schiesse Song”, there are left turns into electro and harmony-laden fusion-pop, and final track “The Death Of The Trees” is a fitting instrumental elegy by Sherwood to his departed collaborator. First time vinyl pressing, includes download card and printed inner featuring new sleeve notes and interviews by Oli Warwick.

DAVID OLNEY & ANANA KAYE BUSK THE SPECTRAL STREETS OF MEMORY ON NEW ALBUM WHISPERS AND SIGHS, WHERE AMERICANA MEETS EASTERN EUROPE March 19th 2021 marks the release of the final studio album by the late David Olney, beloved folk songwriter’s songwriter, in collaboration with Anana Kaye, a young Eastern European powerhouse taking Americana by storm NASHVILLE, Tenn. - If the futile longing to reach back through memory and grasp what is in the past could be set to music, it would sound like Whispers and Sighs. Over the course of 13 tracks, David Olney and Anana Kaye manage to craft a journey that amounts to far more than just another Americana album. This is to be expected with Olney, an acclaimed songwriter responsible for more than 20 solo albums and songs covered by and/or co-written with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, and Linda Ronstadt, among many others. Further, just as Townes Van Zandt reportedly saw something special in him, Olney felt a similar admiration and kinship towards Kaye, a smoky-voiced Americana darling whose star is assuredly on the rise in Nashville, and her husband and musical partner Irakli Gabriel, both of whom are originally from the country of Georgia. On Whispers and Sighs, the pair create a unique, sonic landscape that blends the haunting sensuality of European music with the raw intimacy of Americana, weaving raucous, unapologetic rock anthems like “Lie to Me, Angel” and “Last Days of Rome” with sparse, introspective ballads such as “Tennessee Moon” and the record’s title track. All of the songs were written by the trio of Olney, Kaye, and Irakli. In addition, longtime Olney collaborator and hit songwriter John Hadley earns co-writing credits on a few. Brett Ryan Stewart (Wirebird Productions) produced and mixed the record at his studio in Nashville. Stewart is another rising star in his field, having garnered Grammy consideration for projects he’s helmed, along with notable TV and film placements. Richard Dodd, recipient of the Best Engineer Grammy Award for Tom Petty’s Wildflowers, mastered the project. Whispers and Sighs features an impressive array of Nashville musicians and vocalists — perhaps most notably Olney’s long-time musical collaborator and bassist Daniel Seymour, and bassist Chris Donohue, who has worked with such artists as Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, and Elvis Costello. All in all, Whispers and Sighs is an Americana record that explores what it means to be human. Over its course, Olney and Kaye take turns leading the listener through intimate self-portraits, myths, and tales of historical fiction, all in an effort to illustrate the various devices we use to cope with our own impermanence. Though the project deals heavily in weighty, existentialist themes, the prevailing message proves to be a celebration of human connection, friendship, and love. As Olney put it in 2019, “We have no idea where the songs come from, but they bring a peace of mind like an old photograph of home. Wherever that may be.” And while it’s hard to escape the seeming cosmic significance of the album as posthumous Olney release, at no point does this create the air of morbidity; rather, it lends the project a bittersweet ambiance. According to Anana and Irakli, mere moments after hitting save on the final mixes, the phone rang with news of David’s passing. This seems tragically fitting; for what is found on Whispers and Sighs is a collection of songs into which two artists and friends clearly poured the full extent of their souls. Within it is an undeniable reminder that David Olney’s extraordinary legacy can never fade, while Anana Kaye’s star grows deservedly brighter by the day.

FOR FANS OF: DAVID OLNEY, ANANA KAYE, STEVE EARLE, TOWNES VAN ZANDT, EMMYLOU HARRIS, JOHN PRINE.

Label founder Todd Hyman established Carpark Records in 1999 in New York City, focusing primarily on experimental electronic music, including releases from artists such as Kid606 and Casino Versus Japan. When Carpark Records moved to the D.C. area in 2005, the label released music by numerous Baltimore acts, perhaps most notably, Beach House and Dan Deacon, bringing new attention to the label. Later, the 2009 single “Blessa” from Toro y Moi signaled the next chapter in Carpark’s history. The label continued to grow and released acclaimed albums by rock bands like Cloud Nothings and Speedy Ortiz. Holding on to the label’s love for electronic music, Carpark released albums from Sklyar Spence (formerly Saint Pepsi) and Young Magic. Now, the label continues to work with exciting bands across the world such as Palm, Madeline Kenney, and The Beths. Over the years, Carpark has also expanded into a larger family of imprint labels such as Company Records with Chaz Bear (of Toro y Moi), Wax Nine with Sadie Dupuis (of Speedy Ortiz), Paw Tracks with Animal Collective, and Acute Records with Dan Selzer. These imprints have been responsible for breakout albums by Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Tanukichan, Johanna Warren and re-issues of seminal works by Theoretical Girls and Glenn Branca. After 21 years of releases and tours, Carpark Records pays homage to its incredible roster with No Cover: Carpark’s 21st Anniversary Covers Comp. The album is full of creative reinventions of various releases from Carpark’s past. An energyfilled cover by Melkbelly of Dan Deacon’s “Crystal Cat” opens the album, followed later by Sad13’s churning cover of Cloud Nothings’ “Psychic Trauma.” Johanna Warren’s folk-leaning cover of the raucous, pop-rock song “Happy Unhappy” by The Beths, transforms the original into a solemn, gut-punching track. Skylar Spence and Fat Tony’s cover of “Ordinary Pleasure” by Toro y Moi is full of pop and disco flair, but holds onto the rhythm and expressiveness of its model. No Cover: Carpark’s 21st Anniversary Covers Comp is an exciting revisit, and reimagination, of iconic releases from Carpark Records. TURNING ON • North American publicity by Grandstand • 21 covers of Carpark artists by Carpark (Family) Artists • Facebook boosted posts and targeted Instagram dark posts throughout campaign • Pressed on Stracciatella vinyl, includes free digital download

PRESSING

With a sound oscillating between psychedelic pop and space rock, TRIPTIDES’ album “Alter Echoes” channels both The Byrds at their most hallucinogenic and Floyd at their most cosmically composed while creating something immediate and new. Led by multi-instrumentalist Glenn Brigman, and with drummer Brendan Peleo-Lazar and bassist/guitarist Stephen Burns, the band has established itself as a preeminent part of the Los Angeles new wave psych music. With “Alter Echoes,” they pull away from the pack, thanks to the quality of their songwriting, performance and production. ALIVE 0214LE COLOR VINYL LP

NEW BUMS Track Listing

Seven years and a handful of lifetimes ago, New Bums came out of nowhere with their debut album, Voices In a Rented Room — a DC809 LP record the New York Times described as “feeling like it’s falling apart.” New Bums Street Date: took this as a compliment and, thus emboldMarch 19, 2021 ened, they toured relentlessly in support of the release: criss-crossing the USA in the NO EXPORT spring of 2014, with a European run that TO EUROPE, summer. Then, silence descended, as the JAPAN, Bums withdrew to the place from which AUSTRALIA — they’d mysteriously emerged. Now, the Bums SEND GRACE are back! 2021 finds them with a new album TO ALL OTHER in hand. Following a west coast US tour in TERRITORIES late 2019, it’s clear that the duo of Donovan Quinn ( Skygreen Leopards) and Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Rangda, etc) are fully reanimated, as evidenced by the songs and sounds of Last Time I Saw Grace. Retaining the drunk-dog-locomotion of their debut, New Bums sprinkle a bit of fresh fancy into their signature twin guitars-and-vocals sound, with cleaner recording techniques, further developments in harmonies, and a new appreciation for a song with more than two parts, making Last Time I Saw Grace nothing less than the perfect progression from the purposefully murky mixes of their debut. Continuing to embrace an acoustic rock ’n’ roll sound, inspired by artists such as Jacobites, Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny Thunders, Replacements and such, New Bums push the words and the stories to the front of the line, crafting tales with satiric glee on Last Time I Saw Grace. However, this world of empty perfume bottles, bodies tied to masts, and moving onward to devastation (after the bottle on the table pulls out a gun) feels much more Gombrowitczian dreamscape than drunken night on the town. Yes, everything is wasted, but this is an existential wasteland rather than a substance-laden one. This combination of arch Californian post-aristocratic melodrama with torn and frayed acoustic guitars opens up a new genre entirely, one we at Drag City are tempted to call Rent Control Romantic. But who are New Bums, where are they from, how did they meet? It’s still a bit hazy, but here’s what they told us:

of the fact that I had performed this favor for him. Chafing at such ingratitude, I chose to stew from a comfortable distance. My apprehension towards friendship seemed more than reciprocated. When invitations began to arrive to visit his home I was surprised but soon discovered such mercurial shifts in mood were the norm for Ben. One day he was kicking me out of his house for an innocent comment about the Rolling Stones, next day he was buying me a drink, followed by threats of violence, then hugs, then insults and ultimately an invitation to form a band.” — Donovan

“We weren’t always friends. The “band” began in 2007 when I moved to the Mission in SF and somehow ended up two doors down from Donovan Quinn. Donovan was a solo, brooding guy back then, not too far in disposition from an old dog, or a gopher with a sickness. The word that was often used to describe him at the time was “rascal.” As such, him being my neighbor and me needing to mellow him out, there was only one thing for me to do: invite the rascal over to play music in my garage late at night and drink the rascal under the table to let him know who’s boss. Times are different now but that’s just how it was back then. After many nights of listening to The Faces, Cinderella, Beggar’s Banquet, and other like minded bands, we started to cautiously introduce each other to our own music. That’s how New Bums was born.” — Ben

Since 2014, their ever-evolving sound has incorporated stylistic touchstones from math rock to ambient to emo, exploring themes of place, self, and culture through a dialect entirely their own. Michi Tassey (keys, synth bass) and Chris Lee-Rodriguez (guitar) exchange vocal leads regularly, shifting perspectives and ranges as their songs cascade through varied musical worlds, refracting their thematic questions concerned with identity. The album’s lead single, “Try Lingual,” sees the quartet at their most all-encompassing. Thematically, it’s an apt setting for exploring Lee-Rodriguez’s personal struggles with learning Spanish, and Tassey's with Japanese, in order to better communicate with their families and communities. Trumpeter Matt Hull’s jazzy athleticism often sings in unison with his melodic counterparts, but when let loose between and around the beats, Hull’s calculated, eruptive wailing mirrors the eureka moments that abound when learning a new language. Reflections on identity permeate the entirety of Really From, whose name is drawn from a question often thrust at the band’s mixed raced members—”where are you really from?” The foreboding phrase conjures a complex web of daunting subject matter, but it’s nothing new to the band. It is their lived experience, and so it is woven organically into their emo-adjacent, jazz-inflected experimental rock fabric, crucially blurring the line between the Personal and the Political. redeye distribution 505 Eno Street Hillsborough, NC 27278 harrelp@redeyeworldwide.com

TEENAGE HALLOWEEN TEENAGE HALLOWEEN

Often pinned as a band that has a lot going on,” Teenage Halloween has crafted a sound rooted in abundance. Luke Henderik’s rare and universal lyrics, and the precise ear of engineer Evan Bernard, this newest collection of songs is full of surprises that humbly aims to redefine the modern DIY punk scene. Predominantly a queer identifying band, the songs reflect this experience holistically with lyrics that grapple with vulnerability, community, extreme existentialism, mental illness, and gender euphoria. Accompanied by the band’s explosive energy, each song functions as a politically charged anthem. The album maintains constant energy, and that energy also celebrates the brav ery of being a queer band. Further, the songs speak in narratives, making sure people are held accountable for their actions and in the same vein, given the opportunity to communicate that self-reflection.

ELECTRIC JALABA - EL HAL / THE FEELING Electric Jalaba comprises six accomplished musicians with an empathy that feels telepathic and a groove that immerses. In Arabic, the mother tongue of Moroccan-born singer and guimbri player Simo Lagnawi, a leading practitioner of Gnawa music in Britain, they call this indefinable quality, “El Hal” – “The feeling”. “It’s the feeling that comes when we’re playing and totally forgetting where we are,” says producer and bassist Olly Keen. “The feeling of being grabbed by the music and lost in the groove.” ‘El Hal / The Feeling’ is the new third album from Electric Jalaba and their first release in five years. It’s a multi-faceted work that finds the band tighter than ever, deploying a vast cache of influences across nine tracks improvised and developed in their south London studio then deftly produced by Keen. Some tracks pay homage to the origins of Gnawa music, whose repertoire of Arabic-language praise songs contains remnants of West African dialects – Bambara from Mali, Fulani and Hausa from the Sahel region – that point to a centuries-old migration. “The trance-inducing effect of Gnawa was what hit us first. It was visceral, heart stopping,” continues Olly, whose siblings – producer / keys player Henry Keen, guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Nathaniel Keen and singer / multi-instrumentalist Barnaby Keen – make up Electric Jalaba alongside revered Anglo-Italian kit drummer Dave De Rose and Simo on vocals, krakeb and guimbri. “Simo selected the chant from the traditional song suites and, as a band, we extended these short pieces of ceremonial music and experimented with sound and structure,” explains Olly. Tracks include the Juno-led dancefloor single ‘Cubaili Ba’, ‘Agia Hausa’, a multi-layered wig-out that partly takes its inspiration from Senegal’s fiercely percussive mbalax rhythms and ‘Daimla’, a gloriously dubby ode to Allah and iconic maalems including the late Mahmoud Guinea. “There’s a very strong rhythmic element within the band but because of our different perspectives but the melodic components are really unique as well,” says Henry. That feeling of being outside of yourself but totally within yourself at the same time… That’s what all of us, collectively, are striving for.”

SUS031 A new collaboration between Best Available Technology and Ovis Aurum, the BOA project kicks off a new series of 12” club records for Styles Upon Styles in 2020 with a 3-tracker laden with bruising, experimental takes on UK bass, dub and dembow rhythms. Two BOA originals on the A side, “Body Series” and “Deglover”, channel the power of classic Digital Mystikz bassweight and the churning dancefloor weaponry of Vex’d to forge a volatile new style of UK club music as heard from across the pond. SILVER COLORED VINYL LP: ZIQ429. BARCODE: 5055869565820. BOX COUNT 25. 3MM SPINE On ‘Neon Genesis: Soul Into Matter²’ Meemo Comma (a.k.a. Lara Rix-Martin) takes Kabbalistic text and Jewish prayer and guides them through twinkling ambient synths, breakbeats and cranking industrial noise, full of strange wonder and drama. You can hear soft synths transmuted into choirs of seraphim and moments of occulted dancefloor rapture, from Aramaic chanting and ravey breakbeats to readings from the Zohar. It is quite beautiful at times. Jewish mysticism is at the root of Western esoteric beliefs and therefore has formed the structure of many films and books that explore the question of humanity. Inspired by the visuals of Evangelion and nineties anime soundtracks such as Ghost In The Shell (and its later Stand Alone Complex series), the new Meemo Comma album is a soundtrack to an imaginary anime that, like its real counterparts (e.g. Full Metal Alchemist), takes the beautiful parts of Kabbalah and sets them to science fiction stories.

When asked about the themes that inform her new album, Lara RixMartin says "Judaism is filled with many tales and teachings that prevail in science fiction to this day - whether consciously or not. Sci-Fi is the genre best equipped to explore the immensity and challenges of human experience. Something that Judaism has also been attempting for over three thousand years." "I watched Ghost in the Shell when I was 14 and it was so striking, visually and sonically. The soundtrack has acted as a backdrop to explore my Jewish identity. I have been reading the Talmud since last year, discovering a deeper love for Jewish stories and teachings. There are some beautiful, hopeful ideas in Kabbalah too, which were a central inspiration to this album such as the idea that the first human was nongendered and just this form made up from the qualities of HaShem (God) who performed 'Tzimtzum', contracted their form using their Ein Sof (eternal light) to create 'Adam Kadmon' whose form split into all human souls." Lara playfully subheads her album: “In the year 5781 humanity is ever closer to becoming a singular consciousness. A team of humans are forming an android, Adam Kadmon (CODENAME: UNIT KADMON). First, humans have to gain higher consciousness guided by the Sefirot.“ While you don't have to know about these influences to enjoy the music, it stands true that the intention is an irreverent love letter to the way grand myths are birthed into the future through new forms, retaining their beauty and elegance. Erased Tapes announce Bell Orchestre’s House Music — an immersive ecosystem of an album to be released on March 19, and the first full-length work released by the acclaimed Montreal-based outfit in over a decade. House Music unfolds as one long piece, a recorded-then-sculpted improvisation that vastly expands their work, coalescing classical and electronic instrumentation in the creation of genre-defying musical worlds. After having shared the short film “IX: Nature That’s It That’s All.” — which layered archival visuals of blissed-out crowds at a carnival over one of the later, dreamier sections of House Music — Bell Orchestre presents a video for the one-track album’s most anthemic and explosive segment, “V: Movement”, directed by band-member Kaveh Nabatian. In the album’s liner notes, the group recalls countless moments when, in kinetic moments of improvisation, “a nuanced piece of music would emerge organically, completely formed, without any plan or discussion or rational thought” — and then be lost because it wasn’t recorded. In conceiving a new album, they decided to celebrate the spontaneous and accidental, to centrally situate the act of collaborative, democratic creation in their finished work. With the legacies of improvisation-exploring greats like Talk Talk, The Orb, Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis and the late Ennio Morricone in mind, on House Music, Bell Orchestre captures the impulsive, connective, mysterious poetics of musical invention happening in real-time. With help from engineer Hans Bernhard, the band wired every corner of Sarah Neufeld’s (Violin, vocals) multi-story rural Vermont house. She and the mini orchestra’s other five members — Pietro Amato: French horn, keyboards, electronics; Michael Feuerstack: Pedal steel guitar, keyboards, vocals; Kaveh Nabatian: Trumpet, gongoma, keyboards, vocals; Richard Reed Parry: Bass, vocals; and Stefan Schneider: Drums — assigned themselves to different rooms. They spent two weeks together in camaraderie, creation, and focused isolation to record their improvised sessions every day, but ultimately structured a 45-minute album out of a one hour-and-a-half long improvisation. “If you sliced away the front wall of the house and looked in, you’d see the horn section — with so many different things going on — down on the first floor of what would normally be the living/dining room, and it was full chaos with tables and tables of kalimbas and harmonicas and synthesizers and horns. Then you travel up a floor, and there’s me and Richie in an empty, warm sounding wooden bedroom. Mike was on pedal steel in the bathroom, on the same floor as us. And then up the stairs, through the ceiling and in the attic, was Stefan, alone on drums. It’s a big piece of land, and if you went outside to take a break, you’d look over and hear all of this crazy shit coming out of all the different floors, and it filled this valley, and there were lots of rocks so the sound would bounce around. It was spooky and glorious”, describes Sarah. While edited and trimmed, and occasionally added to, the album itself is in large part the original recording — with the broad structure of its movements kept intact. This single piece of music — written almost entirely as it was being recorded — emerged with no parameters beyond the inclusion of a short harmonic loop Parry had brought in as a starting point, which coheres and propels the album as it moves forward through the birth; vigorous, unrestrained growth; and ultimate slowdown of the musical ecosystem it creates. What the band generated is an album that lays bare the contours of a lived musical moment. “Most of my favorite recordings have some element of an explorative and accidental feeling within the music, a feeling which reflects the truth of musical minds which are partially super focused on specific musical ideas and partially wandering, exploring the musical world surrounding those ideas,” says Parry. “I think it’s really satisfying as a listener when you can hear a musical mind exploring an idea — not just a musician who has pre-formed an idea and rehearsed it 100 times until it’s totally perfect and ironed out. In this recording, every one of the six of us is simultaneously exploring our own ideas, deeply listening to each others’ wide open minds and also totally immersed in our own strange and beautiful little internal musical worlds.” House Music will arrive in its full glory on March 19

Mark Eitzel - The Ugly American

Tongue Master LP

TMASTLP002B

5024545920819

Very Limited 180g LP blue vinyl pressing (500). Made mostly for the US market. The album of solo and AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB songs re-interpretations performed by a band with traditional Greek musicians was released in 2003 on CD only. Seventeen years later, with a rejigged artwork and an Abbey Road cut, ‘The Ugly American ‘is unveiled for the first time on vinyl. The ten tracks cover a varied period of MARK EITZEL’S solo output, the cult band AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB albums, and a sole composition from MANOLIS FAMELLOS (‘Love’s Humming’). All songs were recorded with the addition of traditional Greek instruments (bouzouki, tzouras, Cretan lyra & zournas) under the guidance of MANOLIS FAMELLOS and his band. At a time were AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB albums where hard to obtain reinterpretations of ‘Western Sky’, ‘Last Harbour’ and ‘Jenny’ were treated with effervescence and stunning new arrangements. ‘Anything‘ (originally on ‘The Invisible Man‘) as a stark and bleak electronica track, is now heightened to a majestic instrumentation opus. The album retains the heartfelt tales of sadness that you would expect from self-deprecating MARK EITZEL in a Folk and pastoral context. Today this beautiful recording is revered for its haunting arrangements and MARK EITZEL’S deep warm and rich vocal delivery. A revisionist detour that casts MARK EITZEL’S impressive song-writing skills in a renewed and sparkling adaptations. “…grace and beauty that few can match” HOT PRESS // "This is not the most obvious coupling…but it’s a beautiful affair nonetheless" TIME OUT //

Previous EPs “Sofia Kourtesis” (2019) and “Sarita Colonia” (2020) were released via the excellent Stockholm based label Studio Barnhus run by Kornél Kovács, Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman. “Sofia Kourtesis” EP received 8.0 review on Pitchfork: “The kind of house music that skirts convention and renounces rote functionality without ever forgetting that its purpose is to make people move.” Resident Advisor hailed Sofia’s “ear for offbeat samples, fuzzy-headed filter house and a certain tongue-in-cheek humour” on “Sarita Colonia” EP and further support came from Mixmag, DJ Mag, Clash, NME, London In Stereo, Gorilla vs. Bear and more. Mixmag picked Sofia to feature in their “Six artists you need to check out” in March 2020 and NME recently tipped her in their “100 Essential New Artists for 2021” feature: “Sample-heavy disco house quirkiness from a musical magpie”.

Pharoah: Huh...?

Pharoah: How you like that take, Sam?

Sam: Were you asleep? I’m sorry...

Sam: It’s cool. I think the bit in the middle, where it stops again...I think you can hear...We were both kind of confused. I like it as well because it sounds like two musicians that are trying to guide each other.

Pharoah: No no... I was listening... and dreaming... and listening to music in my head... Sam: Oh wow... sorry.

Pharoah: I think that’s it right there. It came out different. It came out good though.

Pharoah: Many times, people think I might be asleep... but in fact, I am just listening to music in my head. I’m always listening... to the sounds around me... and playing, in my mind... and sometimes I dream.

Sam: You happy?

Sam: What were you dreaming about?

Sam: Okay. Yeah, I think your playing is beautiful.

Pharoah: Yeah, I’m cool with it.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL SWAMP BLUES SPECIMEN IN ITS MIGHTY MONO GLORY! Slim Harpo’s swamp blues stylings earned him almost instantaneous success, his first single quickly becoming a blues standard and later a British Invasion darling. Originally released on Nashville’s Excello Records, Slim’s ’66 LP is full of his signature harmonica and nasal tenor, its double entendre-laced title track being the most successful of his short career. Influential to a wide array of artists (Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, Flamin’ Groovies, and many others have covered Slim’s songs), Baby Scratch My Back gets its long overdue first reissue! “Slim Harpo reached the American top thirty in 1961 with ‘Rainin’ In My Heart.’ Born James Moore, in West Baton Rouge, LA on February 11, 1924, he learned to play the harmonica at an early age, and while still at school became most proficient entertaining his fellow students with concerts in between school routine. Having worked as a stevedore in New Orleans for some time, he returned to his birthplace and worked in night clubs to make extra money for his family. He was soon spotted by Jay Miller who signed him to a recording contract immediately. His first record ‘I’m A King Bee’ sold very well all over the United States, and is now regarded as a rhythm and blues classic. He has recorded several sides since then as well as developed his ability as a performer, and has become an all around artist.” - Guy Stevens (from the original 1966 LP)

Pylon was born in 1979 in Athens, Georgia. Throughout their brief history, they were able to create influential work that would help foster the post-punk and art-rock scene of the early 80s. THE COMPLETE CONCERT ST FOR THE 1 TIME • MASTERED FROM THE ANALOG TAPES

There was no shortage of historic rock music festivals in 1969, from the unforgettable highs of Woodstock to the crashing lows of Altamont and everything in between. Meanwhile, interest was steadily building on another front. A full-fledged 1950s rock and roll revival was brewing, and the idiom’s pioneers were experiencing a renaissance. Suddenly, they were no longer viewed as over-the-hill relics, but still-vital sources of real rock and roll. Combining the two contrasting demographics at one event was a rare sight to behold, but the Toronto Rock’n’Roll Revival 1969, held that September 13 at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, represented that unlikely hybrid. That afternoon the Father Of Rock & Roll returned to lead the apostles of rock into the next decade. After decades of inferior releases, for the first time, this historical concert is presented in it’s entirety. HAIL HAIL ROCK & ROLL! It was in Benin City, in the heart of Nigeria, that a new hybrid of intoxicating highlife music known as Edo Funk was born. It first emerged in the late 1970s when a group of musicians began to experiment with different ways of integrating elements from their native Edo culture and fusing them with new sound effects coming from West Africa´s night-clubs. Unlike the rather polished 1980´s Nigerian disco productions coming out of the international metropolis of Lagos Edo Funk was raw and reduced to its bare minimum. The repetitive nature, the skeletal composition and the relentless exploitation of synthesizers, electric guitars and 80´s effect racks resulted in a spiced up brew with an odd psychedelic note.

John Frusciante releases the first instrumental electronic album under his own name on Aaron Funk's Timesig label. The record is dedicated to his cat Maya who recently passed away, a fellow traveller in his otherwise solitary music making sessions. He says "Maya was with me as I made music for 15 years, so I wanted to name it after her. She loved music, and with such a personal title, it didn't seem right to call myself Trickfinger, somehow, so it's by John Frusciante."

'Maya' is inspired by his favourite music: '91 to'96 UK breakbeat hardcore and jungle. It’s a varied and personal take with sophisticated, authentic production balanced against John’s acute sense of melody, an inspired blending of machines and samples infused with a joyful energy. After discovering early UK rave music, John started dancing at drum & bass club nights in Los Angeles. He then got into Venetian Snares' music at the Autechre curated ATP in 2003, eventually becoming friends with Aaron resulting in the Speed Dealer Moms collaboration which boosted his confidence in making electronic music. The process of making his tracks changed over time as John explains; “For a full year before I started this record, I worked within self-imposed limitations and rules that made the music-making process as difficult as possible, programming for programming's sake. After a full year of that, I decided to make things easier, to the degree that I could regularly finish tracks I enjoyed listening to, while continuing many of the practices I‘d developed. Throughout the recording of Maya, I would prepare to make each track very slowly, but would finish tracks very quickly. I'd spend weeks making breakbeats, souping up a drum machine, making DX7 patches, and so on. By the time an idea came up that seemed like the beginning of a tune, I had a lot of fresh elements ready to go." John says his solo music has changed; "I don't have that interest in singing or writing lyrics like I used to. The natural thing when I'm by myself now, is to just make music like the stuff being released this year. I really love the back and forth with machines and the computer." The fun he’s having on 'Maya' is infectious.

NOGA EREZ KIDS (ALBUM) RD: 26-03-2021 Musician and producer, Noga Erez finds her feet on KIDS, her bold second album for City Slang made with her creative and life partner Ori Rousso. Building from the raw politics of her 2017 debut, Off The Radar, KIDS moves closer to home while retaining her signature smarts and swagger. As with Off The Radar, Erez never pulls her punches, whether that’s with politics or production. After a series of singles, KIDS comes packed with chart-worthy outspoken pop anthems for the 21st century. KIDS replaces the shadow

COWFIVECD 5070000138275

This, the seventh studio offering from Urban Country duo Morton Valence (Anne Gilpin and Robert ‘Hacker’ Jessett), started life as their experimental side-project back in 2016. Legendary UK country label Cow Pie Ltd’s - established in 1978 by BJ Cole and Hank Wangford - sensibilities were especially tweaked and they were convinced it was time this spectacular album finally got the airing it has always deserved, remastered and repackaged for a new era. The album features ten tracks. From the explosive intro of ‘Skylines Change / Genders Blur’, coming at you like the illegitimate lovechild of The Jesus and Mary Chain and Ennio Morricone, to the down-at-heel ‘Black-Eyed Susan’, replete with sweaty priest and bullwhips, Morton Valence also flirt with the blues on ‘Sister Pain’, deliver sorrowful, divine love songs like ‘The Visit’ & ’Hymn Four’ and breathe fresh discordant life into the late 80s Bob Dylan classic, ‘The Man with the Long Black Coat’. As antithesis to a no regrets-type torch song, ‘If I Could Start Again’, where a man recounts his misspent life from a prison cell, could have been penned by Merle Haggard. The unrelenting ‘Trail of Tears’ is more akin to late-70’s Martin Rev robotics than anything ever created on a guitar. Alongside Gilpin and Hacker, Alan Cook’s sublime pedal steel guitar is omnipresent throughout the album. ‘Black Angel Drifter’ is an alt-country album that puts the rulebook through the shredder and starts again, set to put Urban Country on the map and give UK Alt-country an authentic new voice of its own, a voice that is genuinely original, new and exciting. Quotes : "They drift with phantom ease from spare, intimate, literate alt-country to a nuanced, weighted music bearing the marks of rock'n'roll history..." William Doyle - Great Spans of Muddy Time RIYL: Brian Eno, Robyn Hitchcock, Robert Wyatt, Euros Childs, Berlinera Bowie, Cleaners from Venus. It’s nearly a decade since William Doyle handed a CD-R demo to the Quietus co-founder John Doran at a gig, who loved it so much he set up a label to release Doyle’s debut EP (as East India Youth). Doyle’s debut album, Total Strife Forever, followed in 2014, as did a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. A year later, he was signed to XL, touring the world and about to release his second album – all by the age of 25. After self-releasing four ambient and instrumental albums, Doyle’s third full-length record – and the first under his own name – Your Wilderness Revisited arrived to ecstatic reviews in 2019: Line of Best Fit described it as “a dazzlingly beautiful triumph of intention” Just over a year later, as he turns 30, Doyle is back with Great Spans of Muddy Time. Born from accident but driven forward by instinct, Great Spans was built from the remnants of a catastrophic hard-drive failure. With his work saved only to cassette tape, Doyle was forced to accept the recordings as they were – a sharp departure from his process on Your Wilderness Revisited, which took four long years to craft toward perfection. “Instead of feeling a loss that I could no longer craft these pieces into flawless ‘Works of Art’, I felt intensely liberated that they had been set free from my ceaseless tinkering,” Doyle says. “The album this turned out to be – and that I’ve wanted to make for ages – is a kind of Englishman-gone-mad, scrambling around the verdancy of the country’s pastures looking for some sense,” says Doyle. “It has its seeds in Robert Wyatt, early Eno, Robyn Hitchcock, and Syd Barrett.” Doyle credits Bowie’s ever-influential Berlin trilogy, but also highlights a much less expected muse: Monty Don, presenter of the BBC programme Gardener’s World, Doyle’s lockdown addiction. “He once described periods of depression in his life as consisting of ‘nothing but great spans of muddy time’. When I read that quote I knew it would be the title of this record,” Doyle says. Great Spans of Muddy Time is a beautiful ode to the power of accident, instinct and intuition. The result, however, is far from an anomaly: this celebration of the imperfect album is one that required years of honed craft and dedicated focus to achieve, “For the first time in my career, the distance between what I hear and what the listener hears is paper-thin,” Doyle says. “Perhaps therein reveals a deeper truth that the perfectionist brain can often dissolve.” 1. It was engineered by Griffin Harrison and DW in New York City and Perth, and mixed by Mikey Young in Victoria. ‘Pacific Kiss’ sees Rat Columns plunging headfirst into an azure sea of power pop, rock’n’roll and indie. The tones are bright and optimistic, though fans of confusion and gloom will still find solace in the album’s darker moments, of which there are a few. Rat Columns emerged from San Francisco via Perth, Western Australia in the late 2000’s with the mope ’n’ jangle of their first self-titled cassette release, from which several tracks were drawn for their first vinyl release, a four-song 7” on the San Francisco based indie label, Smartguy Records. From that moment, DW and a constantly evolving troupe of friends and co-conspirators have forged a persistent trail of albums and EP’s on a number of interesting small labels such as RIP Society, Upset The Rhythm, Blackest Ever Black, Syncro-System, Adagio 830 and now the London-based Tough Love Records. 1. The

sophomore album from Kalbells, illustrates the formidable love Kalmia Traver discovered with her touring band turned bandmates. Together, Angelica Bess, Zoë Becher, Sarah Pedinotti and Traver, practice both listening and accountability, rejoicing in their queerness, and promoting each other to be their most genuine selves. The result is Max Heart— ten vibrant and subtly layered tracks of mesmerizing psychedelic synthpop. PEACERS CERS THE PEA

“BLEXXED REC”

An electrical tension enters the room — a guitar, left to its own devices, is surfing the breeze. Breaking in the air, smiling from ear to ear. Bicoastal, even! Suddenly, The Peacers are back with their third album. The time has been kind. Three years since they went about their sophomore affect, Introducing the Crimsmen — but you know how it is in these important years, everything changing. Lots goes down, lots to go back through later. LP That second Peacers record was made by the second Peacers lineup, after 2/3rds of the first gang made for the door after the first LP. In came Bo Moore, Shayde Sartin and Mike Shoun — but after they’d finished making Crimsmen, singer Mike Donovan moved out of his old San Francisco digs to the east coast and made two solo albums. So, who êtes vous this time, The Peacers? Check the ‘Better Than Ever’ box, that’s who! Up til now, The Peacers records were consistently great no Ms. Ela Stanyo matter who they were, delivering Mike D’s irrepressible subn’s School of Acting terranean pop in a full color spectrum of moods from purple to Ghost of a Mot herfucker blue-black to sometimes white. Suddenly, three singer-songwriters under The Peacers’ Blackberry E flag! So now they’re the Beatles and Blexxed Rec is loaded like st Dandelion The Thunder a Revolver? Uh, yeah. Gilles Peterson has partnered with Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick to reinvigorate the loose, protean energy of the early-80s Brit-funk scene. STR4TA sees them mine new musical possibilities out of that shared formative era. On “Aspects”, they revisit that important period and the spirit that guided it: self-taught, DIY vitality, and a raucous energy built on live performance. Bringing a fresh slant to a sound first developed by groups like Atmosfear, Hi-Tension, Light of the World and Freeez – with Maunick, it should be noted, also a member of the latter two bands – it’s the first material that Maunick and Peterson have released together in over a decade. It’s an idea that had been in the works for a while, but which was encouraged by a surprising catalyst: the award acceptance speech by Tyler, the Creator at the 2020 Brit Awards, where he shouted out the influence of “British funk from the 80s”. It was an acknowledgement of the particular sound that Maunick and his peers had honed, where their US influences were reoriented through their own circumstances. “Like everybody else who plays music, we tried to emulate our heroes,” Maunick says. “But we didn’t have the tools, we hadn’t studied music: were all playing by ear, and we were coming off bits and pieces that we liked off certain records.” This record is guided by the same ethos. An array of musical touchpoints have fed into the album’s direct, no-frills entries: each track’s parts are cut back to the bare bone. In writing and recording the album, the pair of them would work together to strike upon the point of departure – more naive, less considered – that had produced that killer Brit-funk sound. Peterson would dig out records that showed particular flashes or moods as jumping off points, and Maunick would then work with collaborators to build new directions out of those prompts or suggestions. It’s the latest chapter in a story that started with Peterson interviewing Maunick in his parents’ garden shed, the first interview that the former had ever conducted. Later, they would reconnect to put out a string of celebrated Incognito albums on Peterson’s pioneering, now-defunct Talkin’ Loud imprint. Now, linking up once more, they unpick an under-appreciated flashpoint in a vital musical lineage, one which each of them has been instrumental in shaping. STR4TA’s debut album ‘Aspects’ will be released on Brownswood Recordings on 12” LP, CD & digital formats on 19th February 2021.

Highlights: - the seventh album and second acoustic album of the multi-instrumentalist French musician - "A broad sound allows you to appreciate the piece's gorgeous individual threads and grand composition." (The Quietus) THE EYE OF TIME is the Solo-Project of the French musician Marc Euvrie. Euvrie's musical development is deeply connected with the French diy scene though he has been classically trained as well. Acoustic II is Marc's sixth album and the second one only based on Piano & Cello works. Marc about the development of the album: "Playing Piano and Cello has become more important to me in the last years. After Acoustic (2014) I felt a need to do more acoustic songs. In the mean time, a dream came true. In summer 2018 I travelled across Europe with an acoustic upright piano and a cello to play outdoor shows in natural areas. The audience and feedbacks were so wonderful and gave me the energy to compose more songs. The recording finally happened at the Library of Cherbourg, where I grew up, with a very high quality grand piano."

Highlights: - first Origamibiro release in 6 years - a varied mixture of work, ranging from electroacoustic to orchestral chamber music - Origamibiro's Tom Hill is a renowned score composer for HBO, Netflix and BBC productions After an almost 6 year hiatus, and the break up of the audio-visual trio it had evolved into, Origamibiro returns with Miscellany, a body of work amassed during the years since the release of 2014’s Odham’s Standard. Miscellany comprises a varied mixture of work, ranging from electroacoustic to orchestral chamber music. Drawing upon much of the found-sound style for which Origamibiro became known, the DIY approach to sampling and composing continues to play a central role in the process. Exploration into the tangible nature of everyday objects and textures - both in and outside of the home - is a theme relished in much of Origamibiro’s work. Forest brambles and plastic toy Easter eggs are examined in surgical detail alongside the debris of demolished piano parts, to be repurposed into whatever sonic potential they offer up. Miscellany will be released on Denovali, March 2021.
