Redeye Label of the Month:

JAZZ IS DEAD

COWBOY JUNKIES | KING GIZZARD | SONIC YOUTH

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight This Issue: Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Andrew Lojero, and Adam Block at Jazz Is Dead unreleased music of the next quarter. Our mission is to find moving shit. So we are constantly on the hunt for it. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Jazz. and yes, its def a mix. Soul jazz, breaks, bossa, fusion, salsa, samba, straight ahead, etc. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? In a lot of ways, none of us expected to actually be able to accomplish this. So at this point, we just want to continue to build a fresh, new and ultimately timeless library of music. How did you personally get started in the music industry? The four of us, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Andrew Lojero and Adam Block all have individual long music careers. Adrian as a composer, Ali as one of the founding members of A Tribe Called Quest, Dru as a concert programmer and producer and Adam at Rhino Records and Sony Legacy. When and where did the label begin? The label began as an accompaniment piece to the concerts we had been producing under the same name as the label, Jazz Is Dead. As we continued to bring rare talents to Los Angeles, we realized that time with these jazz masters is sacred, but moreover very limited. The record label started as a way to pay homage through a catalog to the great master musicians that we love. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? We like to leave this for people to make up their own mind. To provoke peoples thoughts and let them arrive at a radical decision of their own. How has the label changed since it started? I think the label has refined over the last two years, but we’re still in our infant stage. It will be exciting to see how it all rolls out over the next 18 months with all that we have planned. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We have a very diverse team over here. All of us- a scrapy bunch of music lovers that are fighting to get as many ears on our music as possible. Now with events coming back around, our staff will expand again. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? We started the label during the pandemic. So we don’t know what it would’ve been like before the pandemic. Having the label has been a great source for joy and distraction while everything else is seemingly crumbling out in the world. We’ve been fortunate to find our footing in such times. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Our homebase is in Los Angeles. Our studio, Linear Labs is in Highland Park and our flagship record store is in the same lot. The venue where we do most of our concerts is directly across the street from us. Having said that, 20% of our entire following is in Brazil and a good chunk of our releases have been as well. We think of ourselves as an ever-growing international company. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? The Katalyst is an amazing new find out of Los Angeles. We are constantly searching every nook and cranny for new music we haven’t heard before. Music that’s new to us. Could’ve come out in the 70’s or

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Each of us have a different release as our personal favorites, but i think the most important project we’ve all been a part of so far has been The American Negro (and accompanying podcast and short film). Becoming part of the social justice fabric is important for us. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? I think The American Negro album cover was a great shock to people. But in general, just the name of the label is a radical or wild act that garners quite a bit of attention. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We like to keep colored vinyl limited. We press 500 for EU and 500 for the rest of the world. It compliments our color scheme of each album. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Vinyl is really our main baby and what we care most about. Being an all analog production, the fidelity on vinyl really does it for us. We do limited cd and tape cassette runs on a release by release basis. How would you describe the average fan of the label? I would describe the average fan as hard core. They usually dive in and want to collect the whole series. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Dru and Adam are musically deficient. But we all know Ali’s lifelong music mission and Adrians been at it for 20 years. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Trying to find a world where vinyl is sustainably produced. What an amazing goal! How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Both of the highest order, as evidenced by the work around The American Negro campaign. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Covid-19 Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: All of the stores out there that are carrying our goods, everyone showing any love, we very much appreciate you. Thank you for letting us create!

SUN RA ARKESTRA Under The Direction of Marshall Allen SWIRLING Following the announcement of the Sun Ra Arkestra’s first ever Grammy Nomination for their album ‘Swirling’, we are offering the title at a discount of 20% for CD and 10% for 2LP for a limited period until January 31st 2022. Recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, the new recording represents the continuation of a heartfelt rebirth of the Arkestra under Allen’s guidance since Sun Ra left the planet in 1993, gaining new generations of followers from their regular touring across the globe. With a big band line-up featuring long-standing Arkestra members including Danny Ray Thompson (RIP), Michael Ray, Vincent Chancey, Knoel Scott, Cecil Brooks, Atakatune (RIP), Elson Nascimento and Tyler Mitchell, the album is a full-blooded celebration of Sun Ra’s legacy.

Tracks include brand new arrangements of Arkestra staples ‘Angels And Demons At Play’, ‘Satellites Are Spinning’, ‘Door Of The Cosmos’ and ‘Rocket No. 9’ alongside lesser known gems; the rousing blues ‘Darkness’ is recorded here for the first time, resurrected from the Ra archives by Marshall Allen. Other highlights include an epic version of ‘Seductive Fantasy’ (first recorded on Ra’s ‘On Jupiter’ LP in 1979), the freeform sonic blast of ‘Infinity / I’ll Wait For You’ and a first ever recording of the Marshall Allen swing composition, ‘Swirling’. “We truly hope that this recording brings much joy to a planet which is so deeply in need of a spirit sound and vibration,” states saxophonist Knoel Scott. “We hope it contributes to a change in the ominous direction of man’s journey through the cosmos.” “This new release is the Arkestra’s love offering to the world,” concludes Marshall Allen. “Beta music for a better world.” Originally released in October 2020, Sun Ra Arkestra’s ‘Swirling’ is available again now on all formats in celebration of the album’s Grammy nomination in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. Features and reviews ran in The Guardian, Mojo, Uncut, Quietus, The Wire, Record Collector, RA, Pitchfork, 6Music, TSF Jazz, FIP, Nova, Liberation, France Culture, Rolling Stone FR & DE, WDR Cosmo and more

SONIC YOUTH In/Out/In In mulling over their career, it’s staggering to realize that Sonic Youth not only delivered a healthy slab of releases as a unit but also have a myriad of shelved material still waiting for broader ears. While the group’s current Bandcamp abode lays out a generous amount of it, a bunch more has yet to surface. And it’s a massive mountain to chip away at in the sense of the group output alone; individual members’ projects are a whole other game, needless to say. In/Out/In ably delivers a new slab of mostly-unheard Sonic righteousness, with a scope on the post 2000-era band in especially zoned/exploratory regions. The 80’s and 90’s continually saw Sonic Youth reminding everyone that their jams ran free alongside song craft and visible development album to album; there were Peel excursions, dipping toes into soundtrack work starting with 1986’s Made In USA, and of course great impromptu expansive takes of tried and true previous material onstage. The millennial establishment of home turf studio spaces in NYC then NJ greatly egged on forays into improvisation and composition on their own clock as evidenced in Goodbye 20th Century and the plethora of SYR releases that trickled out side by side between major release albums. At this juncture they had already created a cultural template for a whole new breed of rock heads who, in turn, entered a feedback loop to SY itself, which cultivated more of its own new moves informed by the very fandom they had for their acolytes all the while pushing the band outward to uncharted fields. Jim O’Rourke’s residency had already influenced the band’s material in part into denser, longer, meditative paths. Mark Ibold’s entry for their swan song The Eternal also allowed for more of this exploration with Kim Gordon having more room to commit to third guitar. However The Eternal also took more cues from Ibold’s bottom-end swing and perhaps dialed back the expansiveness of the NYC Ghosts and Flowers and Sonic Nurse era a notch in a cool way, making it one of the best group efforts for me, anyway. Perhaps this fueled some of these tracks here, in an already comfortable zone with a new lineup and new drive to take sideroads to even more outer realms. In/Out/In reveals their last decade to be still heavy on the roll-tape and bug-out Sonic Youth. Not all recorded in one session but rather spread out over 2000-2010, the sequencing here is especially well thought out. Opening with the 2008 “Basement Contender” we get a super-unfiltered glimpse of the band at Kim and Thurston’s Northampton house creating a gentle springboard of Venusian choogle, with phased Lee lappings at cascading Thurston figures forming a simmering soundtrack. “Machine” offers another instrumental track from The Eternal sessions and is a steamy exercise in stop-start rhythmic grunt amidst a jungle of chiming and upward spiraling chord progressions. We’ve also got the extended score offering “Social Static” from the Chris Habib/Spencer Tunick film of the same name, draping white sheets of noise over your head then descending into a gauzy maw of car-alarm guitars and ambient-yet-disruptive turbulence that eventually subsides into a smoky coda. Two more tracks round out the set both culled from a Three Lobed box set of various artists from 2011 called Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them: “In & Out” quietly resembles Can in a cave with dripping stalactites of Kim’s wordless tone rumble and was recorded at a soundcheck in Pomona California and their home Hoboken turf in 2010. “Out & In” from 2000 was done in their late downtown NYC studio and serves to close out this LP’s last 12 minutes as a reminder of what they got up to with O’Rourke there. More gentle time shift chord framework erupts into molten fury before mutating into the sonic equivalent of a slowly collapsing star. Casting an audio net over the entire instrumental/outtake oeuvre of Sonic Youth’s long history isn’t something easily committed to a single release without a doubt. Hearing these tracks in comparison to, say, 1986’s Made In USA material shows the massive leaps they took over the years. Whereas ’86 showed them freshly discovering their go-with-the-flow instrumental abilities for a soundtrack, their last decade showed them complementing the ambience with assured twists and turns that only came to be through their inimitable and rooted telepathy. That, plus the freedom to compose in more comfortable environs other than dank Ludlow Street rental spaces (hard to believe Daydream Nation was created in a claustrophobic basement) most assuredly was a component in their continued paths of discovery. Shifting on the drop of a dime from quiet/deep forays into full on noised-out Autobahn stomps, they painted detailed and varied brush strokes and continually created organic sounds that undoubtedly carried the signature sound of the band, while ringing loud with their continual drive to free themselves from just that. Enjoy this capsule. Brian Turner, 2021

Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore

GHOST FORESTS

LP-TLR-125g (transparent green LP reissue) 14,2022 2022 Street Date: January March 18, Format: LP gatefold (with download) List Price: $21.99 UPC: 711574922116

Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore’s collective work—as solo artists, band members, and collaborators—could fill a small record collection. Despite this productivity, these two long-time friends have never recorded an entire album focused exclusively on their unique talents. Ghost Forests mysteriously, thrillingly fills that void. Independently, Baird and Lattimore have each cultivated highly individual and idiosyncratic tools of expression. Baird’s timeless and soaring voice, guitar, and drums have underpinned pastoral and folk rock explorations as a soloist and in band settings with Espers and Heron Oblivion. Lattimore’s albums of enigmatic, spectral experimental harp sounds move and unfold like films and nature itself. The list of artists that have called upon their voices, talents, and visions to enrich their own work is expansive—a virtual pocket encyclopedia of contemporary indie and experimental musicians. Over the course of Ghost Forests’ six collaborative compositions we hear deeply sympathetic conversations between the two artists. With access to a deep pool of shared influences, these two friends assembled a collection of sounds conjured from harp, guitar (both acoustic and electric), synths, the human voice, and a shared poetic language. Baird and Lattimore’s subjects range from the sound of light on water, seismic geopolitical anxiety, the smog-exploded sunsets of Don Dudley’s paintings, and vertigo from their respective relocations to San Francisco and Los Angeles from their once-shared home in Philadelphia. The synthesis of their vision welcomes listeners who might have been familiar with only one of the performer’s solo oeuvres. It also speaks to long-time fans both artists who have long wondered what this dream collaboration might yield. Steve Gunn has long known Baird and Lattimore and worked with both on his own albums. He says “Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore are two musicians that I greatly admire. Ghost Forests is an ace meld of their abilities; Meg’s guitar and voice, and Mary’s harp lead each other (and us) into further regions of the strata. With each song you can hear this remarkable kinship. I’m thankful for this soundtrack.” Ghost Forests’ musical conversations are intimate, fluid, effortless and spontaneous. They’re filled with the euphoria of creation and, at times, they articulate hard truths and tangled emotions with an ease only trusted friends can manage. The songs alternate between extended ethereal instrumental excursions, gauzy and dreamy pop, blown-out Bull of the Woods heavy haze, and modern reimaginations of epic traditional balladry—all while touching on the strange and otherworldly places between these stations. With Ghost Forests Baird and Lattimore have given us all a timeless gift that generously rewards immersion and deep investigation. It is our collective good fortune as listeners that we are able to eavesdrop on their conversation through these songs. It is also a wonder to hear two unique artists interact to such beautifully original ends.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

THE WINSTONS Color Him Father

18th March 2022

What do Tyler the Creator, Mantronix, Stetsasonic, DJ Shadow, Eric B and Rakim, Brand Nubian, Jay-Z and N.W.A. have in common? What do UK Apachi and Shy FX, DJ Zinc, Bukem, Ganja Kru, Lemon D Ice, Dillinga, Photek, 4-Hero, Congo Natty, Krome and Time, Roni Size, Skream and Shut Up and Dance have in common? Not to mention The Prodigy, Squarepusher, Leftfield, Oasis, Aphex Twin, Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa, David Bowie, Primal Scream, Lady Gaga and Dizzee Rascal? Answer: They have all sampled The Winstons’ ‘Amen, Brother’! The Winstons’ ‘Amen, Brother’ is THE most sampled drum break in the history of music (over 5000+ according to whosampled.com) and has shaped the history of electronic music ever since its creation in 1969. This is the official release of the Winston’s ‘Color Him Father’ album, out of print for fifty years on vinyl, a glorious break-heavy album of soul, funk and gospel featuring the single ‘Color Him Father’, ‘Amen, Brother’ and loads more! The fully remastered album is housed in exact-reproduction original sleeve and design and comes with 4 extra bonus tracks that the group released only as singles. There is also a very special one-off first pressing only of this album that comes with an exclusive one-sided dubplate special 12” of ‘Amen, Brother’ featuring a specially extended break mix of the classic tune. The Winstons’ ‘Amen, Brother’ was originally the B-side to ‘Color Him Father’ a superb soul tune released by a multi-racial group from Washington, DC, in 1969. The drum break was played by George G.C. Coleman, and the song was based on a Curtis Mayfield guitar riff. The soul connection was no coincidence. The Winstons were formed from the backing groups to both Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions before they came into their own spotlight. The Winstons signed to Mayfield’s Curtom Records in Chicago in 1968. Drummer extraordinaire G.C. Coleman had already played with The Marvelettes, Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield (and in the 1970s would play with the funk group Brick). ‘Color Him Father’ became a million-selling no. 1 R&B hit single in the US and the following year the Winstons released their debut (and only) album also entitled ‘Color Him Father’, on Metromedia Records, featuring both sides of the single alongside nine other excellent soul, funk, gospel and R&B cuts. Unfortunately, the group split up the following year, citing difficulties in touring the southern US due to their inter-racial line-up, and their sole album has long-since sunk into obscurity. Fast forward nearly 20 years and the ‘Amen, Brother’ break was discovered by hip-hop producers after the song appeared on the seminal Ultimate Breaks & Beats series of original breaks (alongside ground-breaking tracks such as James Brown’s ‘Funky Drummer’, The Incredible Bongo Band’s ‘Apache’ and Herman Kelly’s ‘Dance to the Drummers Beat’) in 1986. The track became the staple of hip-hop, with countless songs based on George G.C. Coleman’s epic six-second drum break. Fast forward once more, this time to the UK at the start of the 1990s, and 100s of drum and bass producers began sampling and speeding up the ‘Amen, Brother’ break, adding reggae bass lines to create first jungle and then drum and bass – and by the 1990s the ‘Amen’ drum break dominated this new musical genre. The Winstons’ Color Him Father’ is a superb rare slice of soul, funk and gospel music that has changed the course of music over the last fifty years!

MOSE AT HIS BEAT POET BEST, ON ATLANTIC! This classic album—known as the moment Mose hit his stride in transitioning from iconic pianist to iconic beat-esque vocalist—features the first versions of two of his sharpest pieces (“Your Mind Is On Vacation” & the title track), bluish versions of standards, instrumentals, and more. Celebrating its 60th anniversary, cut all analog from the original mono Atlantic reels! Mose Allison was already 34 and had recorded nine records as a leader before cutting his debut for Atlantic but this was his breakthrough date. One of jazz's greatest lyricists, at the time, Allison was making the transition from being a pianist who occasionally sang to becoming a vocalist who also played his own unusual brand of piano. In addition to the original versions of "Your Mind Is on Vacation," "I Don't Worry About a Thing (Because I Know Nothing Will Turn out Right)" and "It Didn't Turn out That Way," he sings bluish versions of two standards ("Meet Me at No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended") and plays five instrumentals with his trio. There are only 33 1/2 minutes of music, but the set is one of Mose Allison's most significant recordings. – Scott

Alex’s third and fourth albums were originally self-released digitally on his Bandcamp, but received the physical attention they deserved following the release of his breakthrough fifth album DSU, remastered and issued on vinyl in 2015 for the first time. With three more original albums released since, Alex’s cult-like fanbase, which includes the likes of Frank Ocean, only ever increases, and these records remain firm favourites as more and more fans discover his prolific back catalogue. Songs like “Mary”, “Mis” and “Change” are soaked in the distinctive personality of Alex G, displaying a serious knack for melodic songwriting underneath unconventional guitar lines and scrawls of fuzz. These records only reaffirm that Alex G continues to be one of the most distinctive American musicians today.

• 1ST PRESSING COLOR VINYL 2xLP Elle Archer’s project Shaylee is the result of great persistence and triumph – a musical reckoning that nonetheless dips its toe into pools of swirling darkness as it fights to see the light. Forthcoming album Short-Sighted Security is most often Archer’s way of hugging her knees to her chest as she processes all the months previous have wrought: COVID isolation; addiction; a lost job; a failed polyamorous relationship and its aftermath; the search for physical connection; aging, trauma, and the dissolution of mental health. “That’s what the record is – just an enormous reaction to traumatic events happening to me in real-time,” says Archer, who recorded and produced the album in its entirety at home, partially as a way to stave off isolation and partially as a way to drown out the sound of her two former girlfriends hooking up upstairs. The interplay of silence and noise on Short-Sighted Security is tonally massive, and Archer uses it to Shaylee’s advantage, stringing together a self-aware, paranoid entity that’s darker than anything she’s released in the past. 2020 was set to be Shaylee’s big, breakout year, and the immediate and conclusive cancellation of any immediate success led Archer down a different path than expected – a path that forced her to relive buried trauma and attempt to come to terms with herself through a period of intense difficulty.

“COMMANDO is the supreme love child that was born from all that time Bikini Kill spent pegging Limp Bizkit. Fourteen tracks of shredding, screaming, blazing bars over boom-bapping beats, with bombastic, melodic, explosive, queerific nü metal, punk, spoken weird and more. COMMANDO is the gang of queer superheroes comin’ for ya and bringing the better-for metaphors you’ve so long been dreaming of and wishing for.You thought you knew? Get it or get hit.” The album opens with a fiery triptych of bangers penned by Juba Kalamka: “Hotel Essex” (an interpolation of the 1980s HIV/AIDS lamentation “Now We Think” by poet/activist Essex Hemphill), “The Theme From Jigaboo Devil” (the title track from a fictional lost film adaptation of a real-life late 1990s Black indy comics hero) and “Meatswinga (MorelloMuhMello)”, a narrative of Kalamka’s sex work experiences inspired by the Rage Against The Machine guitarist’s amusingly sheepish tales about his college-time employ as a party stripper. Led by Lynn Breedlove (Tribe 8) and Arriola Sands, the next suite serves an series multigenerational dialogue on Trans-led struggle and survival, beginning with the antifascist missive “Comin’ For Ya’” followed by the sly grooving, grinding metaphors of “Girl With A Gun”, the snapping, rhyming-and-stealing, gender meditative speed punk of “Breasticles” and the flesh shredding, no-fucks-left-to-give fire-breathing lead vocal of Arriola Sands’ “Ready To Die”. The album’s third suite finds Honey Mahogany and Krylon Superstar creating and conjuring a surreal, grungy, and iconic Black trans world. Like a queer absurdist Chop Suey!, “What It Feels Like For A TGirl” features Honey at her most angsty and ain’t-having-it, as she soars over a sprawling epic replete with anvil, trumpets, claves and arpeggiated Sophtware Slump-style synths. Meanwhile, Krylon’s “Nepachutie” comes out growling and swinging, the titular genderqueer, multicultural demi-deity blazing a trail from the head of Mardi Gras to infinity. Kalamka returns in the fourth suite to remind the listener of the forces of evil the band is dedicated to combating on “Shit Spaghetti” and returns to breaking down a dense and intense conversation on race and class dynamics in a late 1980s San Francisco leather scene reeling at the height of the HIV epidemic in “The Shock Of Gary Fisher”. The album’s instrumental grandiosity melts away as it concludes with Breedlove’s raw, haunting and intimate trio of poem/songs/mediations on three queer superheroes. “George Michael” and “Prince” are vivid portraits of queer public/private life, art, inspiration, and ultimate martyrdom, while “Mykki Blanco” storms and explodes with the position Breedlove reintroducing himself as one of America’s premiere queer trans storytellers.

PLANET MU RECORDS LTD.

18th MARCH 2022

Planet Mu presents ‘ADDLE’ – Bogdan Raczynski’s first album of new music in 15 years. Marking a change from the high-octane jungle tekno braindance for which he is most commonly known, here we find the Polish American musician in a more melodic and zen-like place of peace, which is ergonomic and decluttered, whilst also bittersweet and tinged with melancholy. ‘ADDLE’ is closest in spirit to 2001’s tender ‘myloveilove’, or the light-hearted ditties of this year’s ‘BANANS’ EP, but is also a markedly new milestone. A robust and bottom-heavy rhythm section juxtaposes with sad electronic tear jerkers, at points laced with the soft cooing wail of his vocals, which are loaded with a haunting, heavy and almost wounded emotion. Bogdan comments “Calm is great. You need to take a breather in the eye of the storm now and then. But the real growth happens in turbulence, when your feelings oscillate in and out of sync. It’s not dry land you’re after. You’re trying to build a new island while on a piddly raft. Beleaguered and weary you lay the foundation with your bare hands while the rain lashes your back; a new place for you and yours to moor yourself to until the next storm hits. ‘ADDLE’ is about that storm, its adjacent periphery, and what you look like, in and out, when you set foot. As space and time push against you, that process of adapting becomes an anchor. Among that state of being addled, out of flow, seemingly untethered, there is beauty.”

Although less unhinged and riotous than some of his previous work, ‘ADDLE’ is no less impactful. Lean, punchy and purposeful, this seemingly simple combination of beats and melody belies a razor sharp skill, which bursts with verve and virtuosity. Across its eight unique and moving tracks the listener experiences tenderness, feelings somewhere between unease and comfort, and a sense of reflection, with Bogdan seemingly gazing at twinkling stars, but with his view distorted by welling-up. Sonically, spaces range from razor-sharp choppage, juddering heavyweight head-nodders, bit-crushed siren squall and something akin to Philip Glass’ ‘Candyman’ score played through a high-techfairy-tale music box. There’s also a warming, life-affirming moment as close to deep house as Bogdan will ever comfortably get, necksnapping metallic percussion, Casiotone on steroids and reverberant warehouse throb. Booming drum machines are a prominent factor too – reminiscent of early hip hop instrumentals – but spirited off somewhere, lost in purgatory. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. Chrome Canyon has long been inspired by original scores that are as revered as the films they soundtrack: Goblin’s Suspiria, Wendy Carlos’ A Clockwork Orange, Vangelis’ Blade Runner, and Giorgio Moroder’s Midnight Express. For his second album Director, Chrome Canyon creates his own soundtrack to an unmade film. Its pieces are intended to spark vivid, cinematic imagination.

He says, “Director is meant to accompany whatever it is you’re doing while you’re listening to it. Tracklist: 1. Daybreak 2. Coming Home 3. Drowning 4. Tonight’s the Night 5. Lullabies in a Car Crash (alternate version)

Airbag co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist, Bjørn Riis will release a new mini album titled “Coming Home” in February 2018 on Karisma Records, follows up to the highly acclaimed 2017 release, “Forever Comes to an End”. Bjørn’s unique guitar playing has a centre role, with soaring leads and beautiful textures. “I’ve always felt that the guitar is an extension of me and a more comfortable and natural way of expressing myself musically” - Bjørn explains. “I’m really happy and proud of the vocals this time and the duet with me and (Norwegian singer) Sichelle on “Drowning” is very emotional” - Bjørn continues. Lyrically, “Coming Home” deals with the fear and insecurity of being forgotten by the people around you. You imagine all these dramatic scenes and wonder if you’ll ever be missed if something really was to happen.” “Coming Home” also feature a newly recorded semi-acoustic version of the title track of Bjørn’s 2014 solo debut, “Lullabies in a Car Crash” (Karisma Records). “Lullabies just fit right into the mood and theme of this album. It’s almost become a new song. It’s very honest and moving” - Bjørn explains. The track feature Airbag and Bjørn Riis Band touring guitarist Ole Michael Bjørndal on lead guitar. Radiowaves was the last album from legendary Norwegian rock band Seigmen in their first lifetime - before disbanding in 1999 and reuniting 6 years later. It was a very controversial album at the time, due a distinct change in both the band’s image and sound – and English lyrics! The Norwegian mass audience couldn’t quite wrap their heads around it - but it has long been a fan favourite, and the epic album opener “Performance Alpha” is still a staple in their live sets. Metropolis was the breakthrough album from Seigmen - Norway’s biggest rock band in the 90s. Led by the now legendary title track, both the album and single went gold almost immediately, and the band’s popularity flew through the roof seemingly overnight. Inspired by, amongst other things, Fritz Lang’s iconic movie of the same name, the album and following tours cemented Seigmen’s role as Norway’s biggest and best live band. The album has been long out of print, and has never been issued on vinyl before – so any fans of mid 90’s alternative rock should check this out. . World Contact Day arrives six years after the previous Blue States album, written and recorded partly at Dragazis' Lightwell Recordings studio in Hackney featuring a combination of instrumental soundscapes and vocal songs that draw from influences as diverse as world as Morricone, Vangelis, Beak, Broadcast and The Carpenters. Songs on the new record feature guest vocals from the likes of Giampaolo Speziale and Federica Caiozzo of the Italian band, Malihini, English folk-musician, Rachael Dadd and Miami-based Allison May-Brice (The 18th Day Of May, Lake Ruth). Written under the backdrop of claustrophobic uncertainty and grief, Dragazis wanted to make an album of expansive escapism whilst also grounding musically in a more live approach than previous albums. ‘World Contact Day’ opens with ‘Plain Sight’, the first of the Rachael Dadd featuring songs, thematically about escape and setting Rachael’s Sandy Denny-a-like vocals to a baroque pop backing. It’s followed by an instrumental ode to the humble wire in a world of wireless connectivity (“I trust wires and I understand them” says Dragazis). The second Rachael Dadd’s up next is ‘Tides Confusion’, a song about how waves of grief can come like tides, grounded on a pulsating electronic loop that evolves into live drums, horns and backing vocals representing the rising water. Next up is ‘Warning Signs’ featuring Giampaolo and Federica of Malihini, a track about looking after yourself because if you don't, how can you look after anyone else? Two brilliant songs with Allison-May Brice light up side two of ‘World Contact Day’, the urgent, sparkling electronic pop of ‘Alarms’ and the epic, velvety torch song album closer ‘Science or Fiction?’ about the paleoanthropological fraudster Charles Dawson and the Piltdown Man hoax. Blue States returns with a fine collection of music, up there with the best of his work that blends soundtrack and song to brilliant effect. World Contact Day then, calling occupants of interplanetary craft from 18 March 2022

Manuel Valera New Cuban Express Big Band Distancia

manuelvalera.com greenleafmusic.com

"Postbop and classical romanticism are as integral to his vocabulary as Latin folk forms, and they all find natural expression in his music." — New York Times “The combination of bubbling percussion, melodies built on traditional Cuban pieces, and the colorful section arrangements holds your interest from beginning to end.” — Step Tempest

Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Manuel Valera (Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Smith) hails from Cuba and is an integral part of the New York City’s vibrant music scene. Distancia is the second album from his New Cuban Express Big Band, a spirited ensemble that fuses the music of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Brazil to forge innovative sounds and textures. The album draws upon searing personal experiences – going through personal loss, and having to pick up the pieces to move forward. Valera uses the broad palette of the big band to express a wide range of moods and emotions. From the haunting “From Afar,” to the buoyant “Expectativas”, and the fiery “Gemini,” the writing is dynamic and varied and the ensemble brings out the nuances with both grace and gusto. The band features some of New York’s best creative musicians, including vocalists Camila Meza and Bogna Kicińska as well as standout soloists Charles Pillow, Remy Le Beouf, and Mike Fahie. Produced by Kabir Sehgal (Chucho Valdés, Arturo O'Farrill) and Doug Davis (Brian Lynch, John Daversa), Manuel Valera presents a very personal album of engaging contemporary big band jazz.

Live from Abbey Theatre, Dublin 11. In Painters’ Light 12. The Harbour 13. Have You Not Heard The War Is Over Black Studio Outtakes 14. Clouds Dry Up 15. After The Rain Declan O’Rourke is an artist known as a consummate performer who captivates audiences time and time again the world over whether commanding the stage alone with a guitar and a microphone, accompanied by a 50 piece orchestra, or surrounded by a band. Having performed extensively in the US, Europe and Australia, O’Rourke’s growing status is one of a significant global artist.

BOOKING

From his debut, Since Kyabram (2004), O’Rourke has been praised by songwriting giants such as John Prine (“a great songwriter”) and Paul Weller (“he writes the sort of classic songs that people don’t write anymore”). His work, meanwhile, has been covered by worldclass artists such as Christy Moore, Camille O’Sullivan, Eddi Reader, and Josh Groban.

PUBLICITY - US

O’Rourke has released seven acclaimed albums, an expressive body of work (“proferring reassurance in the face of inevitable sorrow” - New York Times’ music writer, Jon Pareles) that catches the light in many ways. His latest (seventh) album, Arrivals, (April 2021) is assuredly his most distinctive yet. Emerging at a time when the world is in a phase of serious flux, Arrivals is more present than past, however, and is also his most humanitarian.

GENRE : Experimental FILE UNDER : “C” Colpitts RELEASE DATE : March 18th, 2022 NO EXPORT (S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING:

LISTEN HERE The music of composer and percussionist John Colpitts is as fearless as it is far-reaching. As one of New York’s most in-demand improvisers and drummers, Colpitts’ prolific list of collaborations speaks to his omnivorous and innovative approach to music. He operates at the vanguard of new music, whether working with pioneering composers like William Basinski and Laurie Anderson, outrock explorers Boredoms, Oneida and Spiritualized, or fellow contemporary sonic adventurers Greg Fox and Jan St. Werner. On new album Music from the Accident, Colpitts eschews his Man Forever and Kid Millions monikers to present his most vulnerable and resonant work to date, charting an important period of transformation for the composer. As its name implies, Music from the Accident captures an unexpected, life-altering change in the composer’s life. In February 2018, Colpitts was involved in a car crash which severely injured his back and left him unable to work or perform for months. The three movements on Music from the Accident each speak to a different stage of Colpitts recovery - shifting from stasis to toddling and finally transcendence. This progressive work illuminates Colpitts’ tenacious spirit and sheer ingenuity as a composer. Working on new music became an important means of pushing forward through his recovery, which Colpitts deliberately approached as an opportunity to explore new creative avenues. Colpitts’ expressive grasp of rhythm and space still form the foundation of the album. Drums and percussion are entirely absent for the first half of the record, the composer instead transposing his rhythmic ingenuity to other instruments. With close friend and collaborator Greg Fox acting as producer, the pair worked on the initial piece transmuting the complex emotions of the experience into short sonic leitmotifs, sculpting small gestures on modular synthesiser and percussion into longer movements that Colpitts mutated and condensed into musical themes. The album’s subtle minimalism provides a perfect analogue for Colpitts’ journey to recovery: each repetition or delicate shift in tone and texture is almost imperceptible and yet an important step towards the album’s conclusion. Microtonal viola runs by Jessica Pavone and sparse bass tones provide a perfect harmonic counterpoint to Colpitts’ foundation of synthesiser and percussion, constantly exploring and expanding the field of sound with the same searching sensibility as traditional drone music from around the world. Far from becoming depressed by a random act that could have ended his ability to play, Colpitts transformed the obstacle into an opportunity for creative and emotional growth. The creative process is truly inseparable from the final piece, the transformation and ultimate transcendence of an artist crystalized into a prism of immeasurable radiance.

Acompelling mix of blue-eyed soul and down-to-earth classic rock, evolving from the heavily soul-influenced debut album Everyday Dreams to create a meless sound. Inspired by legends like The Band and Van Morrison, the point has never been to copy or even imitate, but to listen and learn. To emulate an atude, more than anything, and follow their example in the creave process. Jesper’s second album is a creave tour de force! During two years of setbacks – weathering label issues, a pandemic, cancelled tours, and a kidney disease to boot – Jesper and his band had lile else to do but write and record music. The result is a remarkable new album; Twilights, recorded in their own studio in Brunnsvik, outside of Ludvika, Sweden. The record is produced by Jesper Lindell and Björn Peersson, but is at its core a collaborave effort from the heart and soul of the whole band. This was fundamental to the recording sessions from the get-go – to encourage ideas and influences from all six members of the band. As the cherry on top, the album has three luminous guest singers; Swedish Klara Söderberg, one half of First Aid Kit; French rockstar Theo Lawrence; and American singer Amy Helm, daughter of The Band’s Levon Helm.

Hinako Omori a journey…

Release date: 18th March 2022 Bringing together therapeutic frequencies, forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), and binaural sound, Hinako Omori's “a journey...” combines inner healing and natural landscapes into in an immersive cartography of the mind in ambient electronics. The album progresses not track by track but as a continuous journey; a stream of consciousness tracing hills and valleys with the warmth of analogue synthesis and Omori's voice always close at hand. Omori detuned oscillators to create binaural beats, syncing to the Hz of our brainwaves so that listeners might further find themselves calmed by and immersed in these soundscapes. “a journey...” was recorded at Omori’s home studio and Real World Studios, when Omori was an invited to perform at the immersive online festival WOMAD At Home. Spatial, 3D recordings are woven throughout the album, and situate each track in different environments, from waterways to forests in and around the Mendip Hills. It is Hinako’s work in sound engineering that provides the bedrock of skills that manifest her vision for “a journey...”, articulating a whole world in binaural field recordings, analogue synthesisers, and augmented vocals. The album sits within a rich lineage of electronic musicians who have looked to music for its healing properties, from Venezuelan musician Miguel Noya to Pauline Anna Strom's ambient soundscapes; Pauline Oliveros' deep listening meditations and the augmented field recordings of Irv Teibel's Environments series. Hefner - We Love The City Where Its At Is Where You Are

LP

WIA098LP

5060853700880

The Hefner 20th anniversary vinyl reissue program has been a little delayed, but it’s worth the wait! Hefner’s third long player, We Love The City was initially released in 2000. We Love The City eschewed the band’s former broken indie-folk sound in favour of a bouncy, urban, blue-eyed soul, and an expanded line up including Hammond organs, Wurlitzer pianos and brass sections. Songs like ‘Greedy Ugly People’, ‘Good Fruit’, ‘Painting and Kissing’ and ‘The Day that Thatcher Dies’ are typical examples of the direct, infectious, intelligent style that endeared Hefner to so many. 1 We Love The City 2 The Greedy Ugly People 3 Good Fruit 4 Painting And Kissing 5 Hold Me Closer 6 Don't Go 7 The Greater London Radio 8 As Soon As You're Ready 9 She Can't Sleep No More 10 The Cure For Evil 11 The Day That Thatcher Dies 12 Your Head To Your Toes

Brent Windler - New Morning Howl Goldstar Recordings LP

GSRLP007

0787269005365

Brent’s pop melodies summon the restrained beauty of his native Midwest. A fixture in Kansas City music, Windler’s pacific harmonies and intricate vocal and instrumental structures capture the polite malaise of Americana as it is lived everyday in mid-sized cities of the heartland. For more than a decade, Windler has explored this terrain that has grown into a more expansive identity that perfectly captures both the sticky sameness of a Midwestern evening, and Windler’s own embrace of a sound that is uniquely his own. Brent’s first solo album “New Morning Howl” is an old friend joining you cross-country. As Windler narrates the tender sameness of the landscape, his arrangements and harmonies reveal hidden depths, casting the familiar in a sound that is lush, layered, and new. 1. Around The Bend 2. ANA EGGE

B E T W E E N

U S

For her new album, ‘Between Us’, acclaimed songwriter Ana Egge writes about the tumult and divisive nature of our world and explores ways to confront difficult issues between people of opposing views. Many of the songs are the result of a new cowriting collaboration with Irish songwriter Mick Flannery and began as melodies that appeared to her in dreams. Wanting to bring new sounds, as well more diversity to the musical background, Egge and producer Lorenzo Wolff assembled an eclectic group of talented players including bassist Michael Isvara Montgomery and guitarist Jonny Lam (from African psych-funk band Sinkane) and New Orleans keyboardist Jon Cowherd (Joshua

Redman,

Daniel

Lanois,

Joni

Mitchell). The result is something new and different, a fresh sonic direction that brings these brilliant, thought-provoking songs to life. Egge is justifiably proud of ‘Between Us’. “It was an amazing experience…to come through this difficult time with something so immensely beautiful,” she shares. “I really love the record so much.”

Group Listening’s brilliant first album, Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works, Vol.1, was a haunting, meditative and lovingly considered selection box of musical reworkings. It featured rearranged tracks by the likes of Arthur Russell, Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. But it was also much more than that. In making this record of reimagined musical works, Stephen Black [Clarinet] and Paul Jones [Piano] were two musicians doing what all music fans do: comparing favourite tracks, turning each piece over for new meaning and developing a musical understanding of each other in the process. Fast forward a couple of years, a remix album of Vol.1, 12” What’s A Girl To Do? - featuring a re-work of the Fatima Yamaha club staple - an EP of rearrangements with Cate Le Bon from her LP Reward, a remix of Lambchop’s This Is What I Wanted To Tell You and the pair started Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.2 from an altogether different vantage point. “We’ve done a lot more work together now and so have developed certain ways of working. Because these processes have become norms, it’s spurred us on to push things a bit further and to avoid repeating ourselves” they say Whereas their first record was put together over an intense three-day period in a hired-out studio, Vol. 2 saw the pair having to work around various pandemic lockdowns. This meant taking over Jones’ living room, where they gradually put its ten tracks together between September last year until March of this. They would record one or two songs over a couple of days then pause for the week, building and ruminating on ideas; it allowed the music take on a more ambitious nature – albeit within the chosen pairing of piano and clarinet – but also took in all the bits of chat, traffic noise and other creaks and squeaks of a home recording. “I like to think that Vol. 2 starts where Vol. 1 ends” Black says. “Paul and I allowed ourselves the time and freedom to explore and experiment with the recording process and the song selection itself.” Taken as a whole, there’s a gorgeous ambience to the record but that shouldn’t be confused for Volume 2 being an ambient listen. The organic understanding that Black and Jones have of each other’s processes as musicians means that the music sounds incredibly fluid, but the overall tranquillity of the record is made up of dozens of small nuances. It’s a puzzle that’s been put together just below the surface as the duo react with a warm emotion to the songs they’ve chosen. It’s in the way that Group Listening are able to prod, probe and contort the self-defined parameters that they’ve set themselves that makes Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.2 such an intriguing listen – and it’s the love and care they’ve taken over it that makes these versions entirely their own.

Tinariwen’s breakthrough album originally released in 2004, now remastered and repackaged with a bonus unreleased track, exclusive photos and brand-new liner notes. The first vinyl pressing is limited edition indigo vinyl - only 3000 copies worldwide and the download card provides 24-bit WAV. Amassakoul features songs from Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, Touhami Ag Alhassane Tinariwen are Tuaregs, children of a nomadic Berber tribe who have roamed the Saharan desert for thousands of years. Over recent centuries, colonialism has seen the Tuareg’s ancestral territory partitioned into distinct countries - Mali, Algeria, Libya, Niger. This drawing of borders has turned the Tuareg into ishumar, a displaced people in search of a homeland lost to them. Tinariwen’s music – a blend of West African traditional music and electrified rock’n’roll – speaks directly to this feeling of longing: a sound that critics have called “desert blues”.

EX-VÖID

BIGGER THAN BEFORE

CARPARK / MARCH 25, 2022

ED SCHRADER’S MUSIC BEAT NIGHTCLUB DAYDREAMING After turning heads with the densely orchestrated Riddles, produced by Dan Deacon, the Baltimore-based duo Ed Schrader’s Music Beat have given us another giant leap forward with their fourth record Nightclub Daydreaming. The whiplash-inducing stylistic shifts between aggressive noise rock and operatic gloom pop that have become the band’s trademark have given way to a single aesthetic that fuses both impulses. On Nightclub Daydreaming, menace teems just below the surface as propulsive, stark arrangements leave space that Schrader fills with strident, reverb-soaked narration. When Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice began writing the record in 2019, the idea was to make a fun, danceable album, but an underlying moodiness proved unshakeable. As Schrader puts it, “The cave followed us into the discotheque.” The duo road-tested the songs “This Thirst,” “Echo Base” and “Black Pearl” with drummer Kevin O’Meara on tour with Dan Deacon in February 2020. COVID restrictions cut the tour short, squashed plans to go immediately into the studio and sent the touring party on a sprint from LA to Baltimore. “We broke down outside Roswell,” Schrader recalls. “And these cops laughed at our dumb asses as we used all our pent-up stress and fear to propel our half-submerged bus out of the muck, yelling epithets to the sky.” It was one of the last experiences they had with O’Meara, whose death in October 2020 weighed heavily on Rice and Schrader’s minds as they worked on the record. It was also a cathartic moment that presaged the aesthetic that would permeate the songs on Nightclub Daydreaming: “mad euphoria in the face of doom,” as Schrader puts it. “This Thirst” is an alienation-fueled barn burner barely restraining itself through musically sparse, lyrically dense verses to culminate in a howling, synth-saturated chorus that beats horror punk at its own game. “Came from the north with a twisted planetarium, rock salt, nervous tic and novocaine,” Schrader sings, assuming the guise of a vagrant whose irresistible urges lead him through a fever dream of chemicals, back-alley bartering and existential threats. The hyperactive “Echo Base” exudes agitated-cool, with breakneck drum fills and a relentless bass line. The narrator is stranded in a frozen landscape and running out of options. “She is just a night train away,” we are assured, and yet we sense that may not be an altogether good thing. The band recorded and mixed Nightclub Daydreaming over a two-week period with Craig Bowen at Tempo House in Baltimore with David Jacober on drums, turning demos with artificial sounds and placeholder melodies into fully realized songs playable by a live band. The end result is not the album of “sunny disco bangers” that Rice says the band set out for, but something deeper, darker and more rewarding.

all Joe Simon the reluctant soul star. Despite his mountain of hits during the 1960s and ‘70s, his heart just wasn’t into his work, aural evidence obviously to the contrary. You’d never know it from listening to the contents of this collection, culled from his fabulous hit-loaded 1966-1970 stint with Producer Richbourg at the helm for Sound Stage 7 Records. His conviction sounds unshakable. Maybe that’s a large part of the reason why Simon scored 16 R&B chart entries during that timeframe for SS7, including a #1 seller. “I never wanted to sing rhythm and blues,” said Simon, who until his untimely death in December 2021, was a bishop and leader of his own ministries in south suburban Chicago. “My heart was never in it, but yet I could sing rhythm and blues. John Richbourg was my producer. And he used to ask me, how could I sing these songs so great and never knew ‘em? But I never had an interest to go in the studio and know a song. I just said, ‘Man, I just sing ‘em!’ Sunset Blvd Records is proud to present the most comprehensive collection of Joe Simon’s extraordinary work with Nashville Soul Label Sound Stage 7.

It’s Tele Time! A Tribute to Roy Buchanan & Danny Gatton

I have never thought of myself in the same category as Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton--these guys were my heroes, and through them I heard the playing of my other heroes like Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Roy Nichols, Charlie Christian and James Burton. And although I have played different models of Fender and Gibson guitars over the years, (Roy and Danny didn’t always play a Telecaster either), I have always thought of myself in my own way, as being part of the “Washington D.C. Telecaster tradition”. I always brought more than one guitar on a tour or to a concert, and one of them was usually a Telecaster. There would be a part of the show where I would strap on a Telecaster, joke about “it’s Tele time!” and “unleashing the chickens”, and for a part of the night everything that I learned or absorbed from Roy and Danny would come pouring out. This is a collection of live recordings showing those influences and my tribute to 2 of the greatest Fender Telecaster guitar players ever.

The lost FIRST album from The High Strung & one of the best-selling horror novelists of our time, Josh Malerman (Bird Box, Goblin, Pearl). A power-pop gem, originally recorded in 2002, bursting at the seams with youth, vulnerability, and unfiltered energy. Singer/songwriter Josh Malerman is the New York Times best selling author of the book Bird Box, which was turned into the Netflix sensation starring Sandra Bullock. But it’s in the afterword of the book’s sequel, Malorie, that Malerman discusses at length the idea of being “a Prolific.” All the members of The High Strung are long used to creating “for no reason,” i.e., songs, shows, and albums for the sake of doing them. But no album of theirs exemplifies this better than HannaH, recorded in 2002, lost to the flow of time, studio albums, constant touring, and, in Malerman’s case, a life of books. Officially mixed and mastered in 2021, the album was recorded 19 years ago and hidden away. Until now.

Vynehall Title: fabric presents Leon Vynehall Release date: 2022/03/25

Leon Vynehall follows his second album Rare, Forever that landed in many of 2021’s Best Album charts with a spot in the quarterly ‘fabric presents’ series. His fabric mix bursts with exclusives from collaborators and as well as his own ‘Sugar Slip (The Lick)’ that merges a garagey bassline with euphoric moments of 90s trance. The compilation opens with a spoken word introduction from Wesley Joseph, and proceeds effortlessly through ambient from artists Zebrablood and Newworldaquarium, hip-hop (from Wax), breakbeat, the dense dub of Mala and the Afro-Portuguese edge of house with tracks from Bubas Produçoes and A.k.Adrix. Vynehall displays his unique ability to weave together different genres and textures in a way that is technically fascinating while still warm and very listenable. Highlights:

• Includes Leon Vynehall’s exclusive track ‘Sugar Slip (The Lick)’ which is being premiered by Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 6) on the mix’s street date • Another five exclusives from Vynehall’s peers Skee Mask, Or:la, Gaunt, Avon Blume and Ehua pepper the release • A release timed to support Vynehall’s live show at fabric, and 30+ date worldwide tour • Artwork designed & directed by NY-based Eric Timothy Carlson. • Reverse-board 6 panel digipack CD with clear plastic tray

Juanita Euka - Mabanzo Strut present Mabanzo - the debut solo album by Congolese vocalist, Juanita Euka. A familiar face to many from London’s vibrant live music scene over the last decade, Juanita has fronted London Afrobeat Collective’s dynamic live shows, the fusions and cross-pollinations of Animanz and maverick Cuban collective Wara. As a solo artist, she broke through in early 2020, performing her single ‘Alma Seca’ in season 3 of blockbuster series Killing Eve. Born in RD Congo and brought up in Buenos Aires, Juanita’s upbringing involved many different musical influences, not least her uncle, Congolese rumba giant Franco Luambo Makiadi. “In Argentina, I listened to a wide range of style from AfricanAmerican artists to Dominican stars like Juan Luis Guerra, the Congolese greats like my uncle and Papa Wemba and various music from Argentina including Mercedes Sosa. Some of my main inspirations were (and still are) international Afro-Cuban artists like Celia Cruz and La Lupe.” Moving to the UK aged 14, she immersed herself in London’s own sounds, from garage to grime. On Mabanzo (meaning ‘Thoughts’), Juanita brings her many and varied musical influences into play and pulls no lyrical punches. Killer dancefloor single ‘Na Lingi Mobali Te’ is pure contemporary Congolese guitar gold, ‘Mboka Moka’ channels ‘80s boogie and Quincy horn stylings on an anthem for personal struggle and ‘Baño de Oro’ brings a heavy Afro-Cuban workout. Elsewhere, the epic ballad ‘Sueños de Libertad’ is an impassioned call for freedom and the lilting ‘For All It’s Worth’ champions love over materialism.

KEY POINTS Debut solo album by Congolese vocalist, known for her work with London Afrobeat Collective and Animanz Features the singles ‘Nalingi Mobali Te’ and ‘Mboka Moko’ Album produced by Greg Sanders (Teotima) Supported by full worldwide PR campaign with focus on radio Tour dates into 2022 including Jazz Café and WOMAD

TRACK LISTING:

Beyond the 4th Door, delivered an album not unlike Eternal Tapestry’s epic live shows. Containing stretches of melodic guitar improvisations, dark brooding songs slowly build and expand to allow in layers of light. The album was created by recording more that two hours of material in their home studio, mostly live, and hand picking the elements that became these 5 tracks. There is a free and open nature to their structure creating a spacious environment for the listener to explore. Harkening back to the early 70’s experimental rock that inspired them, such as Popol Vuh, Cluster and Träd Gräs och Stenar, Beyond the 4th Door is an album meant to be listened to in its entirety. Available on limited edition vinyl again, after the original 2011 release and 2016 repress sold out within months of their respective releases. Eternal Tapestry are in every way musicians of the now. Extremely active in the new underground of cassettes and CD-Rs, releasing limited edition carefully designed albums on the premier purveyors of the counterculture. Turning the warehouse show on its head by making it a minifestival of like-minded musicians whose shows are very much a unique event as opposed to an attempt to sell or recreate a record. What is old is what is new, the openness of the 70’s comes back to thrive well beyond the parameters of Pitchfork and the like. We invite you to explore the world, Beyond the 4th Door. Next of Kin • For fans of Elliott Smith, Arthur Russell, Alex G, Xiu Xiu, Sufjan Stevens, WHY?, Mount Eerie / The Microphones, Paul Simon, The Postal Service, Hello Shark, Modest Mouse, Moldy Peaches, and Imogen Heap. • US college radio campaign through Pirate Promotions (steve@piratepirate.com). • Press campaign handled by Will Osiecki (will@topshelfrecords.com). • Music videos planned for Rancher’s Pride”, McNally Jackson”, and “Death of Dog”. • April 2022 east coast headline tour. “With its spectrum of sounds, landscapes and perspectives, The Rose Gardener showcases Kalb’s gift for containing multitudes with grace.” -Paste, on The Rose Gardener “The kind of record that feels tenderly consuming when you’re inside of it, and strangely dream-like when you’re not, the new album is another adventurous and emotive collection of songs, earthy and raw but idiosyncratic too; a maze-like allegory of pop songs, full of twists and turns you can’t explain.” -GoldFlakePaint, on The Rose Gardener There is an immediate and palpable sense of joy that jumps out from Next of Kin, the fifth full-length album from bedroom recording project Bellows. But the record is steeped equally in loss: loss of family, beloved dogs, friendships, romantic love, and most of all loss of selfhood. Backwardly inspired by the wealth of loss, Next of Kin sees songwriter Oliver Kalb discovering a renewed sense of appreciation for life in the face of hardship, freshly emboldened to move through the world with a loosened grip on life: “I’m not its master, I give up the fight, I want no claim”, Kalb writes in “Death of Dog”. While foundationally a rock album, Next of Kin has a magical iridescence. Oscillating and shifting dramatically between sounds and genres over its fourteen song tracklist, the album glistens with sheens of alt-country, pristine pop production, and richly layered rock maximalism. The first Bellows album to feature a constant full-band presence bolstering Kalb’s home recordings, the album channels the immediacy and intensity of the band’s live performances. Songs like “McNally Jackson” and “Dawn at Central Park” marry Kalb’s penchant for contemplative, almost literary narration with lavish, kinetic composition. But it’s Next of Kin’s climax “Thumb in the Dam” that is the album’s thematic centerpiece: as Kalb realizes he’s lost a sense of his own selfhood in a deeply enmeshed romance, crossing and confusing identities with a lost love, the album ends with a recognition of identity as perpetually in flux, with change itself being the only constant force.

THE VERTEX Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

The Vertex Sweden’s The Vertex were, along with The Moderns, one of the country’s first mod-revival bands. Smalltown teens with big time dreams, they spat out mod/punk/pop stompers in the early 80’s, before gradually digging themselves deeper into the psychedelic sounds of the 60’s and then closing business in 1987. But their legacy and legend has grown ever since. With singles like ”Tonight The Sky Will Be Ours” and ”John”, the band regularly appears on compilations and today their releases are highly sought after collectibles all around the globe. For the first time a retrospective with The Vertex is now being presented, including previously unreleased material.

Six By Seven - Then, Now And Neil Saturday Night Sunday Morning 2LP

SNSM03LP2021

5024545934717

Double coloured Red and Blue Vinyl Recorded At The New Batcave in Nottingham during 2021. Limited to 250 copies only. A double album compilation of two double CDs called: 'Neil Young's Shirt' and 'Now And Then' which were released on Bandcamp during mid 2020 and early 2021. Although Chris Olley's songwriting is obviously heavily influenced by the legendary Talk Talk albums 'The Colour Of Spring' and 'Laughing Stock', 'Then, Now And Neil', makes sure the songs and sounds are not just content with the slow burning melancholy of the Talk Talk albums, but that they build up and have the added aggression of the distinct Six By Seven post rock style which earned them such accolade in the 2000's. Although there are shorter more rocking songs and a couple of trademark lyrically twisted ballads, most of the songs on this album sound like mini-symphonies as they extended and are allowed to evolve and build into epic soundscapes. As one fan recently wrote on six by seven's Bandcamp site: "Another brilliant collection from start to finish. The whole album is just beautiful. 2020-2021 has had some of the absolute best music ever released under the name Six By Seven." A1. Look At You 08:00 A2. Can You Wait? (You Sick Old Man) 12:03 B1. The bands on this compilation were all on Sarah Records, or have key members whose bands were on that label. There are some names you’ll recognise: The Orchids, The Wake, Even As We Speak, where line-ups have remained relatively unchanged. And there are newer groups: Jetstream Pony (ex-Aberdeen), The Catenary Wires (exHeavenly), Soundwire (ex-The Sweetest Ache), where different shapes have evolved. Time has moved on, but the music is as wonderful and as idealistic as ever. All the tracks on Under The Bridge are pop gems. Some are punk rock, some are indiepop, others are dreamy swirls of fuzz. Some are gentle and some are some are full of rage, but all of them are defiantly sensitive, literate and independent. (Some things haven’t changed.) The bands on this compilation are flattered, maybe, that people spend serious money bidding for their old 7” singles. But they are a lot more excited about the music they are creating today. All the tracks on Under The Bridge are new, and most of them are previously unreleased. CDs and LPs include a 16 -page color booklet. 1. THE LUXEMBOURG SIGNAL - Travel Through Midnight Aberdeen 2. CLEAREYE SHINING STREET DATE MARCH 25 2022

Cleareye Shining is the much anticipated sophomore album from Melbourne industrial post punk outfit Bitumen. This new album sees the four-piece building on the primitive industrial post-punk of their 2018 debut LP Discipline Reaction (Vacant Valley), broadening their sound further into electronic and synth-based, gothic pop realms. Cutting guitars and stabbing bass remain – as does the dynamic intensity of Discipline Reaction – but now fused with new influences to create an album of diverse, direct and intricately-wrought songs. Guitars, synths, samples, and electronic drums coalesce with the distinct and incendiary vocals of extraordinary frontwoman Kate Binning, whose lyrics weave stories set across ancient times, the modern world and futurist dystopian possibilities. Sometimes romantic, melancholy or full of rage. Known for their intense live performances, Bitumen have played alongside the likes of Lydia Lunch, Peter Murphy, The Chameleons and Drab Majesty among many others. While performing was off the agenda throughout 2020, the band leaned in to producing a finely-detailed studio album, experimenting more heavily with electronic instrumentation, layered vocals, and house and breakbeat-inspired percussion. Cutting guitars and stabbing bass remain – as does the dynamic intensity of Discipline Reaction – but now fused with a new palette to create an album of diverse, direct and intricately-wrought songs. The resulting album evokes nostalgia, all the while carving something entirely new and singularly exciting. It’s a stone cold killer record. “With Cleareye Shining Bitumen have created a true work of art that is entirely their own. It furthers the canons of industrial, post-punk & electronica into bold new territory both beautifully refined and exhilaratingly unnerving.” Dominique Furphy 4ZZZfm “(Cleareye Shining) Summons the Spirit of Dreamy Early 90s Alt Rock…sounds like that sweet spot in post-punk and goth-tinged alternative rock that you will find from bands like Curve and Medicine.” Alice Teeple Post-punk.com GENRE: POST-PUNK, SYNTH-PUNK, SYNTH-POP, DARKWAVE, GOTHIC, ELECTRONIC ROCK, INDUSTRIAL, ALTERNATIVE RIYL: SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES, BOY HARSHER, KILLING JOKE, CURVE, MEDICINE, DEPECHE MODE, DRAB MAJESTY, MOLCHAT DOMA, SEXTILE, MALARIA!, RIKI, PATRIARCHY

VACUUM SELF TITLED ALBUM

STREET DATE MARCH 25 2022 Australian cult duo VACUUM has been strictly a live performance project until now. Since 2013 Andrea Blake (ASPS/CHROME DOME) and Jenny Branagan (NUN) have fortified punk shows and techno dance floors alike with their own sensory brand of sub-bass, abnormal beats and mechanical scapes. You can feel their distinct sense for physicality throughout their anticipated self-titled debut album Vacuum, which was recorded and mixed by Josh Wells and mastered by Enyang Urbik in 2021. Listening to Vacuum, a distinct feeling arises: Isn’t this fun? For all its psychic terror and bludgeoning, gut-punch sub-bass this is a record with refreshing, bristling wit. Its elliptical industrial songs apply a piquant buzz to contemporary experimental electronic music. This record is dead-serious, of course, but like the best creators of dystopian visions, VACUUM know that you need a touch of light to contrast with all that shade. Mighty sub-bass, inspired by the rumbling exhaust pipes of muscle cars shudders through its veins; the body-moving dynamism of early Detroit techno is present both in “Dredd” and “Between”, leaning into Model 500 territory. The dead pan vocal delivery and razor-sharp soundscape in “I’ll Call You” and “Between” draws lineage from Anne Clark, ZE Records Cristina and the more recent incarnation of the disembodied vocal in Dry Cleaning. The slow stomp of “Resonate” showcases VACUUM’s versatility and affinity with the claustrophobia of underground 90’s hip hop producers like Mr Len and Spectre or Tricky's Pre- Millennium Tension Trip Hop. Which brings VACUUM’s impressive list of guest artists to the spotlight. Remixes from New Jersey hip hop pioneer Dälek (Deadverse/Ipecac), Berlin/Irish duo Lakker (R&S Records) and Melbourne’s electronic heavyweights Ela Stiles and Sow Discord balance out Blake and Branagan’s penchant for dense materials with high-frequency electrical charges. A stunning astute debut, these songs move in hypnotic circular grooves, complex engines kept in motion by weights and counterweights. Sleekly built but coarse in texture, VACUUM makes hard graft feel like a walk in the park.

Inspired by the soundtracks of John Carpenter and Angelo Badalamenti. This time fusing Darkjazz with Synthwave to create a wonderfully unique mutant musical concoction. Think of the movie ‘The Thing’ located in a Twin Peaks scenery with an 80s setting. The remarkable artwork and its concept is inspired by the 50’s ‘Nights Of Horror’ comic book series by Joe Shusters. The two new music videos for the album are part of a collaboration with Dutch filmmaker Kevin Kessels, using footage from the superb short film ‘Alma’. VISIONS After the 2020 album "Lieder Für Geometrische Stunden", Sankt Otten finally make us happy again with their new release "Symmetrie Und Wahnsinn" (Symmetry and madness). Sankt Otten like images of infinity. In the religious sense of meditative mantras, or also in the mathematical sense of an elongated curve that eventually returns to its starting point. "Bis Das Helle Licht Uns Holt" goes exactly in this direction with its classical use of sequencers and a sound carpet of choirs. Sound worlds that, through a clever repetitiveness, barely noticeably guard the constant changes in the compositional mesh like a secret and only reveal what is to be discovered by listening closely and letting it be seen. The duo Sankt Otten, founded in 1999, has been releasing on Denovali since 2009. With their now 12th album they give us again a gem of timeless instrumental music. “About seven years ago, I stood around a makeshift fire pit in a clearing on a small gulf island with a group of my best friends. We burned a beer can and made jokes. When I started recording the first half of this record, I thought everything was falling apart. For six months, I could only hear from one ear and the doctor said it could be something quite serious. The cedars were still dying. My dad was still dying. A year later, we recorded the second half of the record on Gabriola Island. My ear finally cleared up after the sessions were over. We listened to the final masters in the middle of the heat dome summer during the Perseid meteor shower. The heat dome eventually ended. In the fall, Amanda and I planted dozens of trees (Garry oaks, willows, alders and maples) around that fire pit. Our bass player Robbie’s having a baby this spring. Amanda’s started restoring hand-crank sewing machines. She says everything can be mended. It might be too late, but I’m going to keep planting trees every year going forward anyways. Apollo Ghosts joked that this was a feeble attempt at making our own ‘Tusk’. Some influences this round: The Bats, Dear Nora, Little Wings, Tom T. Hall, The La’s, Beverly Glenn Copeland, disco beats, ocean swims, trees, Lucia Berlin & Lydia Davis, and as always…. the local music scene.” — Adrian Teacher Pink Tiger was recorded by Jordan Koop (Orville Peck, The Courtenays) at the Noise Floor on beautiful Gabriola; a gulf island located in the unceded traditional territory of the Snunéymux First Nation. Additional production and mixing by David Carswell (Destroyer, New Pornographers) at JC/DC Studios in Vancouver.

Wings I: Everlasting Darkness 4. Jigsaw 5. Witness 6. Wings II: Beyond Horizons 7. Wings III: Icarus 8. Golden

Monstereo serves catchy melodies and energetic rock songs rooted in 70s rock and psychedelia, and the four-piece has served jam packed space rock for over a decade. With this album Monstereo demonstrates their richest and broadest sound yet, with more keyboards, synths, and a variety of guitars, offering, according to the band, "teeth-grinding riffs, big choruses and rock-solid grooves". The tracks on "In the Hollow of a Wave" represents the best of two worlds. Catchy melodies, heavy riffs and a big sound, combined with exploratory instrumental sections that build towards a euphoric climax. Rooted in 70's Rock and Psychedelia, the band's 2013 debut full-length "Spacesuits, On" brought Monstereo's Space Rock, with its jam-sections and exploratory feel to a wider audience. The 2014 follow up "Bright Dark" saw the band forming its musical identity, with distinctive guitar riffs and vocal melodies being given more prominence. Now, in 2021, "In the Hollow of a Wave" consolidates the bands musical expression with an all-out rock'n’roll banger. LIMITED EDITION BLACK 7” Screen Printed Sleeve CAT NO: ZENFC011S UPC: 5056340104088

Danger Mouse protégé Baba Ali releases his double A-side 7” “Living It Up / Black & Blue” on 25 March 2022 via Zen F.C., the label run by Yard Act members James Smith and Ryan Needham. It’s the first new music since Baba Ali’s much heralded Memphis Industries debut LP, 2021’s Memory Device. On the new single, Baba shares: “We first started work on ‘Living It Up’ and ‘Black & Blue’ during 2020, which was, in spite of all the challenges, a very fruitful creative period for us. At the end of the summer 2020, we decided to set these songs aside to work on the album, Memory Device with Al Doyle. After touring the new record in the fall, we returned to the abandoned songs and immediately realised that they felt even more relevant to how our live performances on stage have become. The songs also feel like a bridge between what we've released so far and the direction we are heading in. We're doubly excited that we've been able to share this release through Yard Act’s label Zen F.C.” Yard Act’s James Smith says of the release: “We loved Baba Ali's music from the moment we heard it. They're joining us for our debut album tour in February. When Baba sent through some new tunes he and his bandmate Nik were working on we saw an opportunity to reboot Zen F.C., and to preserve on wax and share some great music with the world. It was a no-brainer for us. We are honoured, we are buzzed to have Baba Ali as the first ever non-YA release on Zen F.C. - follow the label, there will be much more to come in the future.” Baba Ali is supporting Yard Act on their forthcoming UK tour before heading to SXSW Thursday 17 February - Village Underground, London, UK Friday 18 February - Patterns, Brighton, UK Saturday 19 February - The Joiners, Southampton, UK Monday 21 February - Exchange, Bristol, UK Tuesday 22 February - Clwb Ifor Bach, UK Cardiff Wednesday 23 February - Bodega Social, Nottingham, UK Thursday 24 February - The White Hotel, Salford, UK 25 February - The Trades Club, Hebden Bridge, UK Saturday 26 February - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds, UK Tuesday 1 March - The Cluny, Newcastle, UK Wednesday 2 March - The Caves, Edinburgh, UK Thursday 3 March - Mono, Glasgow, UK Monday 14 - Sunday 20 March - SXSW, Austin, US

OVERVIEW 2nd edition of this highly regarded sophomore album from doom band Bismarck from Bergen, Norway. Originally released 2020 Labelled by some as the heaviest band from Norway’s west coast, Bismarck’s uncompromising, sludgy riff mantras and psychedelic escapades have been stirring things up in the Norwegian underground after the band released their acclaimed debut album URKRAFT in August 2018. Inspired by a wide array of genres and styles - from amp melting stoner-doom, to 60s and 70s psychedelic rock, the Norwegian black metal they grew up with, and Middle Eastern folk music - Bismarck’s music alternates between intense fuzzed out heaviness and clean, atmospheric drones, with its lyrics expounding upon Western esotericism, altered states of consciousness and a mystical apocalypse. Now they are back with their second album, Oneiromancer, and it’s even darker, harder and more adventurous than its predecessor. OVERVIEW While the Norwegian-Israeli multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jacob Holm-Lupo is best known as the leader of one of Scandinavia's foremost progressive rock bands, White Willow, he has taken a lot of musical detours of late. First with the 80s-loving art-pop project The Opium Cartel, and then with a surprise collection of instrumental hard rock bangers with Telepath's Mental Mutations. His latest baby, a project he calls Donner, was originally intended as a pure electronica project. The original inspiration came, to a large degree, from Berlin School electronica like Tangerine Dream, Manuel Göttsching and such, as well as synth-based soundtrack music from the likes of John Carpenter and Fabio Frizzi.

Shamblemaths II

APOLLON RECORDS PROG PROG/ECLECTIC/ROCK

Cat No: ARP049LP ARP049CD

OVERVIEW

A blatant and unabashed throwback to the golden days of 70s prog, Shamblemaths will enthuse the connoisseur of complexity, and drive most others to outrage or silent sobs. Part humorous, part serious, all wonky, self-important and rampantly anglophile! Our second album is darker, heavier, knottier, yet more fragile and vulnerable. It has taken five years, countless studio hours, but zero compromises. Hours of music have been distilled to 45 intense minutes, each one of which a deliberate and necessary part, and not a calory was spent catering to anyone's preferences but our own. Some might call it a change of direction, but then Shamblemaths never had a direction to begin with. The album is like a picture with many shades, but all from a common, dark palette. There is anger and despair, quiet melancholy and faint embers of hope. In sound and instrumentation we remain in some will call the retro-prog landscape. Here are heavy numbers, reinterpretations of a 20th century string quartet and an ancient hymn, and contemporary classical moments. Yet all the components are chosen and constructed to form a coherent album which is more than a collection of tunes. Shamblemaths is currently Simen Ellingsen (soprano/alto/tenor/baritone sax, guitar, vocals, recorder, sundry implements) and Ingvald A. Vassbø (drums, perc) with Ellingsen the principal writer. The album could not have materialised without a jaw-dropping performance by bassist Eskild Myrvoll (Kanaan) and keyboard wizard Paolo "Ske" Botta (Ske, Yugen, Not a Good Sign) lending his genious, alongside an array of indispensable guest musicians. American Dreams Records MARTHA SKYE MURPHY & MAXWELL STERLING DISTANCE ON GROUND

Much like travel literature, Distance on Ground, compromised of two longform improvisational tracks by Martha Skye Murphy and Maxwell Sterling, enacts the motion of journeying as it embarks on a discussion of it. Conceived as travel music, the compositions move between urban and rural landscapes and are accompanied by a participatory website -distanceounground.com -where the listener can voyage in real time to and with the music in their chosen environment.
