LP

PEACEMEAL is yet another reinvention for Ron Gallo - a human being on a lifelong chase of himself and using music as the main vehicle. On his third LP, he exits the noisy confines of the garage and goes outside where there’s no limit to embracing all aspects of himself. The result is a colorful hodgepodge of 90’s hip-hop, r&b, weirdo pop, jazz, and punk. The sounds change, but the sense of humanity, humor and a truly eccentric worldview is the common thread in all of Gallo’s music. Mostly written and recorded during a period of self-isolation in summer 2019, it’s an uncanny foreshadowing of the global situation that was to come and give all the songs a new meaning. This is feel-good music that attempts to confront and understand human existence. Ron Gallo just wants to be himself, destroy expectations and encourage you to do the same in a world that does just about everything to try and box us in - not to mention, this is his best most fun one yet. Now, eat before it gets cold!

“a uniquely introspective affair, with cinematic flourishes throughout, making it an especially exciting release.” UPROXX OVERVIEW 2020's Island is the latest album from Oscar-nominated composer and songwriter Owen Pallett. Almost entirely acoustic, Island deploys the grandest ensemble of Pallett’s solo career – the monumental London Contemporary Orchestra, recorded live at Abbey Road Studios – and yet it also presents the musician at their most distilled, often unadorned. Island begins with 13 darkened chords, the sound of waking up - alone, on a new shore and is followed by a shimmering and luscious orchestral album that draws across the full breadth of Pallett’s discography, from Heartland’s technicolor to the glittering, fingerpicked guitar that marked Pallett’s first records with their trio, Les Mouches. For the first time, Pallett - who has a lifetime of classical training - created an album without brooding over the way it might be performed on stage. This wasn’t easy: Pallett’s initial reputation was founded on their live virtuosity, playing violin for groups including Arcade Fire and the Hidden Cameras, and a solo fiddle and loop-pedal act, under the name Final Fantasy. With Island, Pallett wrote the album’s nine songs on old-fashioned acoustic guitar before reworking it for the orchestra. Pallett calls whole worlds into being, sounds and vistas that only they could see, which glimmer now before the listener, as if a portal has been opened. Island is about being alive, asking why, and all the most hideous stuff of life. The songs don't divulge the answers. "I don't know what's happening next", Pallett concedes.

Promise Catalog #: NS 134 Release Date: 03/05/21 Standard Black Vinyl LP: 309272738421 Indie Exclusive “Vermilion Red” Vinyl LP: 309272738414 Compact Disc: 309272738438 RIYL: Ry Cooder, Ennio Morricone, Luke Schneider, Brian Eno, Bruce Langhorne, Kraftwerk, John Barry soundtracks

Is the Promise kept? Is the Promise broken? Is the Promise real? While their first two albums Ghost Box and High Line, explored panoramas that evoked the American West as well as the cosmic beyond, Promise, the third and latest album by SUSS on Northern Spy Records, takes a more personal journey that maps out the rocky terrain of the American dream. Writing, recording and mixing during the pandemic quarantine, the members of SUSS used their music to come to grips with concepts such as promise and hope and what they could still mean in this day and age. Drawing on influences from their younger years, SUSS has created music that evokes early psychedelic Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and the seminal soundtrack work of John Barry. The results, which they call “pastoral psychedelicism,” is a music that is beautiful, haunting and challenging. The NYC quartet, which includes Bob Holmes, Pat Irwin, Gary Leib and Jonathan Gregg, creates sonic landscapes using a combination of pedal steel, baritone guitar, ebow, harmonium, synths, and loops. “A cinematic record – a travelogue of immersive drives down dusty roads, each song a chapter of a never-ending tale.” -WIRE “Whereas SUSS’ last two albums were more sweeping and cinematic, Promise is more grounded, anchored in chord progressions and repeated motifs.” -(Heavy Rotation) Stereogum “Their incredible country/ambient hybrid is nothing short of peerless… A truly essential 2020 record.” -(10 Best Ambient Albums of the Year) PopMatters “A meditative, but adventurously immersive listen.” -(2020 In Review) Aquarium Drunkard

!"#$! #%%&"

(Limited & Hand-Numbered, 7-LP 180-Gram Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: MARCH 5, 2021 In the Grateful Dead firmament, there are countless good shows, shining like stars in the sky. Then there are the great shows, those that shine the brightest. And then there are the truly transcendent shows, those that exert a gravitational pull—dare we say it, like a “Dark Star”—on all the other concerts from that particular year or tour. These are the nights that every Dead Head learns about right after getting on board the bus… and the September 21, 1972 performance at the Spectrum in Philadelphia is truly one of those nights. This is the concert that original Dead archivist Dick Latvala strongly considered to kick off the Dick’s Picks series, and it’s the one that ended it. It’s one of those nights when every Garcia guitar solo tells a story, when the rhythm section is locked in like the gears on a Swiss watch, and when the band is repeatedly hitting its vocal harmonies dead-on. It’s also a night when Bob Weir absolutely shreds, his unusual chord voicings and off-time guitar fills perfectly complementing Jerry’s leads (the set also includes some highlights from the 9/3/72 show at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO). So when we at Real Gone Music were considering which Pick to put on vinyl next, the choice was pretty obvious. But to do this concert justice, we had to bring in the best. This 7-LP set is mastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering from Bear’s original tapes, which are absolutely brilliant in their clarity and immediacy. Lacquers are cut by Jeff Powell, who got his start at Memphis’ legendary Ardent Studios and has worked with everybody from Bob Dylan to Gregg Allman to Irma Thomas. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Furnace Record Pressing, the vacuum-quiet test pressings were approved by engineer Norman, archivist David Lemieux, and Real Gone’s own Gordon Anderson. And each of the seven LPs is housed inside a polyvinyl sleeve carefully nestled (with extra padding!) inside a two-piece hardshell box. We’ve also included a 4-page insert featuring, along with original photos and graphics and Bear’s original notes, a word from Bear’s son Starfinder Stanley on behalf of the Owsley Stanley Foundation, who kindly provided the tapes for our reissue. Limited to 2000 hand-numbered copies, this one’s going to be a keepsake. Don’t miss it.

or those who find the passage of time a one-way process of attrition, here’s good news for you. In the eight years since AZITA AZITA’s last long-player, her fevered brain has barely rested, and the proof is a new album of unbounded physical and mental activity, music and entertainment, entitled Glen Echo. The worlds of the previous AZITAs have left their unmisAZITA takable essence. Her singular conception of pop music — the idiosyncratic songs, singing and playing that have graced seven acclaimed releases — is in verdant recurrence on Glen Echo, blossoming anew, cutting sharply in the spirit and image of her ever-evolving, always questioning style. AZITA is, on a very forthright level, a formalist — whether standing the lines or vaulting turnstiles, she’s aware of the proscribed lim-

DRAG CITY INCORPORATED POST OFFICE BOX 476867 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 60647 312.455.1015 / sales@dragcity.com

its to her endeavors. That doesn’t mean she’s gonna heed them so much as add ‘em to the considerations of her art. Writing and arranging on keyboards since the time of her solo debut, AZITA focused on guitars for this set of songs. Not simply for swagger or a fresh approach to soloing, but as part of a way to elide expected singer-songwriter tropes, to democratically populate the sound-stage in equal partnership instead. This is a key aspect of the Glen Echo sound, one that determined another new choice — AZITA playing everything on the album herself! That’s the best kind of democracy. Previous long-players Enantiodromia, Life On the Fly and How Will You? were achieved via close work with players and engineers who took the compositions from the demo to a finished form. Invariably though, something would get lost in the transmigration somewhere. With Glen Echo, AZITA comes through fully, jaggedly, most vividly, owning her intention entirely in the dialogue of singing and playing her rock and rhythm and blues. The lyric sheet is riddled with language that circles, through the many moments of life, aspects of the passage of time, the preempted

dreams and strangeness of the present and the way we invent an idealized past in response to the changes, guiding the narrative... where? It’s all banded together by AZITA AZITA’s wit, equal parts droll and dire, her dispassionate view of fates and outcomes for all of us here together on the planet, textured with unique, cinematic details and sudden dives into a deeply felt, utterly OG sense of soul. In Glen Echo are a multitude of sounds — all the moments in a life: the good time grooves, acerbic exchanges in the street, shifts in community and generosity, moments of loss you know you will carry forever, reflection upon unknown futures and pasts, the dark recesses late at night that echo with a wonder you’ve never felt before. You name it, AZITA AZITA’s got some sweet and sour theme music for it. You’ve left it now, but it’s where you’re from. Take the trip back to Glen Echo — a once per lifetime getaway — fresh springs and summers of ten years ago, or an autumn eve when you were a kid. Or maybe it’s just a synaptic distortion, subbing for what your eyes pass over in the present season. Feel how you want about it, it doesn’t really matter to us; any wind that blows AZITA back into the game is a well one!

BARBAROSSA LOVE HERE LISTEN STREET DATE: 05 MARCH 2021 Barbarossa, a.k.a. British singer - songwriter and producer James Mathé, will release his new album “Love Here Listen” on 05 March 2021 via Memphis Industries.

LIMITED EDITION YELLOW LP: CAT NO: MI0643LP UPC: 5056340101926

For this latest batch of songs James Mathé collaborated with producer du jour Ghost Culture (Daniel Avery, Kelly Lee Owens, Falle Nioke) at his studio in Margate, Kent in the South East of England. The pair worked with a limited range of vintage synths - a Mono Poly, Korg MS-20 a Roland SH101 and a Juno 108 borrowed from the local skate store Palm Bay Skates – with the recordings bounced down to Mathé’s Fostex R8 reel to reel to give it that undeniable warmth. Mathé says of the recording process: “It was probably the most stress-free record to date and so much fun just messing around with synth arps. It’s easy with James as we really understand each other and I trust him totally. He lives five minutes’ walk along the seafront from me. We even jumped in the sea a couple times after lunch”. Love Here Listen is Mathé’s sixth album since his debut, Sea Like Blood, released on the Fence Collective back in 2006, since which time he’s joined Jose Gonzales live show, become a member of Junip, toured with POLICA and This is the Kit and morphed from acoustic troubadoury to electronic song smithery all the while seemingly searching for an elusive balance between hopefulness and melancholy. On Love Here Listen, thanks to a reconnecting with the visceral forces of nature, it feels like he has found it.

Our Hands Against the Dusk, the debut full-length from Brooklyn-based composer Rachika Nayar, is a kaleidoscopic release built from textured guitar loops, shimmering synthesizer crescendos, lyrical piano, and orchestral strings -- all digitally processed and threaded through multiple genres, including ambient, emo, electronic, and contemporary classical. The album’s fluid but deeply felt through-line represents Nayar’s navigation through the many musical and human communities she has been a part of as an IndianAmerican trans person. Written over the past four years, Our Hands Against The Dusk winds through vivid personal moments -- ecstasy, ambivalence, grief, and calm -- via the composer’s protean musical voice.

When Nils Frahm kicked off his world tour at Funkhaus Berlin in January 2018 to bring his highly acclaimed album All Melody to the stage, an ambitious journey was just to begin: Over the next two years, Frahm played more than 180 sold-out performances, including the Sydney Opera House, L.A.’s Disney Hall, the Barbican in London, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and several big festivals stages around the globe. Yet the stunning setting of Funkhaus Berlin, renowned for its vintage grandeur and outstanding acoustics, and also home to Frahm’s magnificent studio where All Melody was recorded, had occupied a unique place in the artist's heart. Almost a year later, Nils Frahm eventually returned to Funkhaus Berlin to host another set of four shows, tickets sold out within hours. Frahm’s friend and film director Benoit Toulemonde — a collaborator since 2011 — captured the concerts on film, only using handheld cameras, and employing techniques he had mastered for the famous concert series La Blogoteque, which featured some of the world’s most popular artists.

Tripping with Nils Frahm is an illustration of Nils’s lauded ability as a composer and passionate live artist as well as the enchanting atmosphere of his captivating, and already legendary Funkhaus shows: An extraordinary musical trip – rare and exclusive, close and intimate, bringing a unique concert experience to screen.

"It was about time to document my concerts in picture and sound, trying to freeze a moment of this period where my team and I were nomads, using any method of travel to play yet another show the next day. Maybe tonight is the night where everything works out perfectly and things fall into place? Normally things go wrong with concerts, but by combining our favorite moments of four performances, we were able to achieve what I was trying to do in these two years of touring: getting it right! When you hear the applause on the end of the film you should know that I was smiling happily, being a tad proud and feeling blessed to share these moments with you. Much love, Nils" Tripping with Nils Frahm the live album will be out on Erased Tapes from December 3, 2020. The concert film with the same name is produced by Leiter in association with Plan B Entertainment and will premiere the same day via the curated online cinema Mubi.

“I’ve been driving through the darkness . . . through the smoke and fire on the ground.” Lingering at the remains of a campfire before dawn, with the politics of the personal burnt into ash, running his stick through what’s left, Wand singer/guitarist Cory Hanson is reflecting on a series of moments in which he steps farther into himself, finding the ultimate big sky country on the inside of his skull. It’s a combination of songs and sounds that journey through bleak and broken territory and places of sweet, lush remove, and it adds up to the best record he’s been involved in yet: his second solo album, Pale Horse Rider. Cory’s first solo, The Unborn Capitalist From Limbo, was an intense affair, a grand experiment that produced inspiring, unconventional music — but this time around, he wanted to breathe a bit easier, to feel that breath

JuJu - Live at 131 Prince St Strut continue their in-depth archive reissues from the Black Fire label with a definitive edition of JuJu’s ‘Live At 131 Prince Street’,recorded in 1973 at Ornette Coleman’s gallery in New York and featuring a previously unheard recording of the Pharoah Sanders composition "Thembi". After forming in San Francisco while working on the Marvin X theatre piece ‘The Resurrection of the Dead’, JuJu began to hone their uncompromising fusion of Afro-Latin rhythms with free and spiritual jazz before signing to Strata-East for the ‘A Message From Mozambique’ album in 1972. “We moved to New York and became part of the avant-garde community on the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village,” remembers bandleader Plunky Branch. Following a high profile live show at the Lincoln Center, Ornette Coleman invited JuJu to his gallery and loft at 131 Prince Street to perform there and to stay on while he left on tour. “That was life-changing for us,” continues Plunky.“It was fabulous. The recordings you hear on this album are in close proximity to each other, maybe across one day or a weekend at the gallery.”Alongside tracks written by the JuJu band members, like the 5/4 tempo ‘At Least We Have A Horizon Now’, they play choice covers from their peers. Plunky explains, “‘Thembi’ is a Pharoah Sanders piece which he wrote for his wife in 1971 and it’s one of my favourite pieces by him. ‘Azucar Pa Ti’ was written by Eddie Palmieri; we loved him too and enjoyed Latin music in general. Here we play ‘Mozambique’, based on an Afro-Cuban rhythm and we regularly played that for 10 minutes before morphing into ‘Azucar’. ‘Out Of This World’, written by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen, was inspired by John Coltrane who recorded a version of it on his ‘Coltrane’ album in ’62.” JuJu’s ‘Live At 131 Prince Street’ is out on Strut on 12th February 2021 on 2LP and 1CD. Remastered by The Carvery from the original reel to reel tapes and including full sleeve notes based around a new interview with bandleader James “Plunky” Branch

N U B I YA N T W I S T – F R E E D O M F A B L E S Nubiyan Twist return with their brand new album ‘Freedom Fables’ on Strut on 5th February, the follow-up to the acclaimed ‘Jungle Run’ from Spring 2019. Woven around soul searching, cautionary tales and parables for modern life, the new album is the most accomplished yet by the Leeds / London collective, effortlessly fusing different soul, jazz and global styles with great musicianship and lyrics. “Freedom Fables reflects on the power of narratives. Each vocalist on this record explores their own memoirs, a freedom of expression underpinning our belief that music is the ultimate narrative for unity,” explains Tom Excell. “The record references a lot of music that we all loved during our formative years; you can hear touches of broken beat, blunted hip hop, highlife, Latin, jazz and UK soul running through the tracks.” The album is also packed full with illustrious guest appearances: regular collaborator Cherise features on the brilliant ‘Tittle Tattle’, calling out gossip through acerbic nursery rhyming, the loping ‘Flow’ dealing with the ebb and flow of anxiety and the epic Brazilian jazz workout, ‘Keeper’; UK jazz saxman Soweto Kinch brings a burning alto solo and rhymes to the determined ‘Buckle Up’ alongside the band’s own vocalist Nick Richards as the track aims to “find the door to peace” among life’s challenges. “Soweto is a trailblazer of the UK scene both as an alto player and as a rapper with a unique flow and important lyricism,” reflects Tom Excell. “It was really important for us to invite him to contribute to the album.” Richards continues the “dust yourself off and find hope” theme on the rousing ‘Wipe Away Tears’; Ghanaian great Pat Thomas voices a gorgeous Accra meets London highlife jam; massive new vocal talent Ria Moran (a contemporary from the band’s time at Leeds College Of Music) steps up on the sensual ‘Morning Light’ tackling delicate complexities of the heart and long time friend of the band, KOG, brings his trademark full strength Afro dancefloor energy. Shaping up to be a modern classic and a priority for Strut in 2021, ‘Freedom Fables’ is set to catapult Nubiyan Twist even further into the limelight and cement their position as one of the UK’s leading soulful collectives of the current generation. The album was produced by Tom Excell at Henwood Studios in Oxfordshire and mixed by Oli Barton Wood and Tom Excell at The Premises. Artwork comes courtesy of Emma Rodriguez aka Mooncrab. The band will be touring across the UK in February 2021.

DESCRIPTION

Teeth Agency is London based multi-instrumentalist and producer Jesse Hackett and Chicago multi-media artist Mariano Chavez. Their first full length LP You Don’t Have to Live In Pain will come out on Stones Throw in 2021. The pair met in 2017 when Jesse acquired a “dental phantom” from Mariano’s gallery, which led to a stimulating exchange of music and art. The pair started sharing their creative ideas and private art collections virtually, which led to the beginnings of a new venture. United by their morbid curiosities, as well as their interest in a range of experimental musical styles from lizard lounge jazz, stoner doom pysch to absurdist soul horrorrama, the fourteen songs on You Don’t Have to Live in Pain take the listener through a diverse range of moods and settings.

Sunburned Hand of the Man

PICK A DAY TO DIE Street Date: March 12, 2021 LP-TLR-133

Format: LP (with download) UPC: 711574915217

Sunburned Hand of the Man might be the last of the great American free rock collectives. There was a time, not too long ago, when every region of this great republic could boast of its own visionary troupe of seekers and improvisers, thrumming at the frequency of the illuminated world. There was Pelt in the south and Jackie-O Motherfucker in the Pacific northwest, No-Neck Blues Band in New York and the iridescent Jewelled Antler out in the Bay Area. And up in the New England wilds, there was The Sunburned Hand of the Man. It was a glorious time to be a weirdo, even amidst the smoldering wreck of the George W. Bush administration. While the pale white hipsters of the early millennial New York rock scene were cutting the canon of American music to a thin rail of pre-approved bands and albums, the amorphous free rock tribes were expanding it boundlessly. It was all in there. A veritable head music awakening. Loft jazz and European free improv, Xpressway and Takoma, Jandek and Elizabeth Cotton, the Taj Mahal Travelers and the Grateful goddamn Dead. David Keenan of The Wire memorably called it the New Weird America. It felt to me like the mystical democracy of Walt Whitman. It was never arch or jittery or wiry; it sprawled like the continent and massed like the seas. It produced some of the most singularly thrilling performances that I ever had the privilege of witnessing. Most of those groups have since gone dormant—disbanded entirely or decomposed into smaller units and solo projects. But the Sunburned Hand of the Man remains. Or rather, we might say that the Sunburned Hand has returned. The sudden appearance of the phenomenal Headless in late 2019 felt like something of a resurfacing. There had, of course, been a steady trickle of obscuro cassettes and CDRs over the years, filling out an already bewilderingly immense and impossible to master discography. But Headless felt like their first proper album since the release of the Kieran Hebden-produced A on Ecstatic Peace! all the way back in 2010. It appears that it was no one-off. When Sunburned settled on Pick A Day to Die as their new album’s title, I imagine it sounded more like a cool-ass James Bond movie than a grim memento mori for a plague-stricken nation. But here we are. Assembled from recently revisited recording sessions from between 2007 and 2017, Pick A Day to Die captures the full range of Sunburned’s sonic jive. The chiming opener “Dropped a Rock” situates Jeremy Pisani’s lovely acoustic guitar within a vast ECM-like spaciousness, even as knocks and creaks of percussion and the almost-animal whine of electronics suggest some enclosing menace just beyond the frame. The tension is eventually relieved by the motorik rip of the killer title track. “Let’s feel the midnight,” vocalist Shannon Ketch commences a solemn Beefheart-esque rant about jet black leather diapers and eightpiece chicken dinners. The greasy cycle-delica of “Pick a Day to Die” is a good reminder that Sunburned always rocked harder and, if they felt like it, nastier than their compatriots in the early aughts shamanic underground. Ketch barks at you nonsensically to “Taste the campfire!” like Iggy taunting the bikers on Metallic K.O. And, indeed, after the space disco nitrous hit of “Flex,” they are back at it. The tight “Black Lights” is more rumble music. The long demented eastern-tinged odyssey “Initials” dominates the second side, laying malfunctioning computer vocals over a serpentine guitar line. The savage album closer “Prix Fixe” is an aborted hardcore number that slowly gives way to bluesy desert rock blowout. The legendary J Mascis lends his inimitable lead guitar to some “Maggot Brain”-like acid rock ascendance. The thing that one has to remember about Sunburned Hand of the Man is that while they were no less committed to vast, ritualistic summonings than their siblings in the American free rock underground, they were perhaps uniquely capable of channeling that cosmic funk. There’s a throb and a groove to Sunburned’s music that made it as much body music as head music. This is a different kind of American weirdness than that which conjures ghosts and threatens to tear down the veil between worlds. This is “free your ass” weirdness that chugs and bounces. It makes us want to get out of our heads where we’ve all been trapped these past months and drive on the freeway or bop down the street or loaf like Walt Whitman in the stoned sun. Like the man said, it makes us want to taste the campfire. Pick A Day to Die. Sure, but definitely not today.

Evolutionary Cycles is the 5th full length from Dutch ambient beats duo Tangent. Their previous album Approaching Complexity leaned heavily on piano motifs. In contrast, Evolutionary Cycles spotlights the duo's adeptness at creating an atmosphere that focuses on moody elongated synths and tightly syncopated percussion experiments. The album can be viewed as one of their more sullen efforts. During the writing process, the duo used the impact the human race has on nature as their overall inspiration; While this is a troubling and topical subject, there is always lightness in juxtaposition to Tangent's emotional weight.

Lo r e n zo Wolf f Producer Lorenzo Wolff’s Down Where the Valleys Are Low: Another Otherworld for Judee Sill reinterprets 7 songs by the legendary singer/ songwriter. Assisted by a circle of singers and musicians associated with his East Williamsburg studio, Wolff replaces the period LA soft rock, semi-classical, ethereal sounds of Sill’s original recordings with what he calls “dirtier, more earthbound elements.”

robbed liquor stores and gas stations, was arrested and sent to a reformatory, became a junkie and prostituted herself to support her habit. But she also developed her own religious philosophy and believed that, as her song goes, ”Down where the valleys are low/There’s a refuge so high,” and that, as she once said, “Out of the mud a lotus grows.” That lotus was her music - she composed, arranged, played, and sang with a celestial elegance.

Judee Sill’s eponymous 1972 debut was the first released on David Geffen’s Asylum Records. A second album followed in 1973, but she fell out of favor with Geffen, was dropped from the label, drifted into obscurity, and died at 35 from a drug overdose.

For Wolff, the original pristine Sill recordings didn’t seem to be the right platform to support the demons and gods that dueled in her head. He was confident that Judee’s music was strong enough to withstand a rougher, darker treatment. It seemed to him that it was almost asking for it. Wolff has used Sill’s words and melodies as parts of a portrait illuminating the angry, cruel, beautiful, complicated, dangerous woman that she was.

Judee Sill never really fit in to the hip SoCal music scene. She came up hard, suffered abuse from her mother and stepfather, fell in with petty criminals,

American Dreams Records CAMERON KNOWLER & ELI WINTER ANTICIPATION

The Trans-Pecos is a land of stark beauty, dotted with javelinas, ghost towns and small mountain ranges. There’s Marfa, known for its lights and minimalist art, and Terlingua, a tight-knit community of old-timers near the Texas-Mexico border; Alpine, 12,000 strong, is the region’s center. The winter holidays of 2018 found Cameron Knowler and Eli Winter touring through that part of the state. Each night they played solo and duo sets, interpreting traditional folk songs and showcasing their own, unifying seemingly disparate approaches to the guitar. Anticipation, the first album of gorgeous duets by the two young gun guitarists, is the product of this trip, documenting a musical juncture between desert and city, Chicago and the Southwest, vernacular folk traditions and America’s musical avant-garde. At first, Knowler says, their collaboration “seemed insurmountable conceptually.” Knowler, a Houstonian by way of Yuma, Arizona, came to bluegrass guitar through an obsession with Norman Blake, teaching himself over years of practice sessions 12 to 16 hours long. Since then he’s gigged at bluegrass festivals, house shows, hoedowns and honkytonks, working as a session musician, sideman and teacher, and honing a measured approach to the guitar informed as much by wide-ranging folk cultures as the silence of the desert. Only 23, Winter (named an artist to watch by

The Guardian and “generational talent” by NYCTaper) has developed a moving command of the instrument like that of his inspirations Daniel Bachman and Jack Rose, with an energy and confidence honed from extensive touring and performances with Chicago experimental music touchstones (Ryley Walker, Sam Wagster, Tyler Damon).

So I Did,” Knowler renders Winter’s bracing Weissenborn tune into a dusky cowboy noir. Later, he complements his sensitive rendition of Michael Chapman’s “Caddo Lake,” after the lake bordering Texas and Louisiana, with dizzying contrapuntal runs. Garcia Peoples have been a magnetic north for me since I first saw the name a few years ago, loved the suspected pun in there, then heard the psychedelic mission and improvising nerve on the records, the circulating gig tapes and finally in the first-person high of live performance. But in a season of fear and profound loss with no clear way ahead, Garcia Peoples rolled up that night with an uncanny medicine that shook me forward and keeps this album within reach, in a high rotation of assuring message and serial discovery. First impressions count a lot when you find a new, favorite record. But the ones that stick around don't give you everything at once. Nightcap at Wits' End has a lot of what I need right now – then brings something new every time I play it. The duality here runs deep: almost 50 minutes of intricately arranged composition and kinetic guitar chorales christened in tribute to both a familiar place of refuge and that ragged state of mind beyond all common sense, when you keep on going even after you've run out of rope and road. The music itself is a double image: one album-length side of songs that advance the crisp momentum and tangled jangle of early-2019's Natural Facts; and a second half that extends the medley action on Cosmic Cash with the long reach of One Step Behind in a suite of dynamic writing and bonded, instrumental charge, connected by live-to-tape jams – the band's first time exercising that second-nature-on-stage in a studio.

The juxtaposition affirms what I wrote in the opening line when I reviewed Natural Facts for Rolling Stone: "Expect the unexpected." And expect it right away. The great crash of guitars at the end of "Gliding Through" suddenly turns into "Wasted Time," a dream state of rippled-water singing that escalates into its own incandescent guitar argument. Halfway into "Painting a Vision That Carries," the music hovers in a suspense of acoustic strum and fuzz-buster chords – "Way out there on the brink," as the lyric goes – before the charging, instrumental climax. Over in the suite, "One at a Time" is slippery bass and swimming guitars; one improvisation sounds like treble prayer winging through a Marin County mist; and there is a minute-and-change of wahwah brutality before the striking finish of "Shadow," a quiet hymn for rising through wreckage. Nightcap at Wits' End was a long time coming: more than nine months in Philadelphia with Jeff Zeigler, who recorded Natural Facts – from the first work in August, 2019 to the final mix, only a few weeks before I heard it in that eerie midnight. But this album has arrived as if absolutely destined for right now. I am tempted to say it is the band's best record, except Garcia Peoples are too restless to settle for plateaus. Just do as the title says. Raise a glass at your wit's end, and let the music blow away the night. – David Fricke, June 2020
