JAZZ IS DEAD

A P L A C E T O B U RY S T R A N G E R S | J E N N Y H VA L | T H E L E M O N H E A D S

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight This Issue: Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Andrew Lojero, and Adam Block at Jazz Is Dead unreleased music of the next quarter. Our mission is to find moving shit. So we are constantly on the hunt for it. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Jazz. and yes, its def a mix. Soul jazz, breaks, bossa, fusion, salsa, samba, straight ahead, etc. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? In a lot of ways, none of us expected to actually be able to accomplish this. So at this point, we just want to continue to build a fresh, new and ultimately timeless library of music. How did you personally get started in the music industry? The four of us, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Andrew Lojero and Adam Block all have individual long music careers. Adrian as a composer, Ali as one of the founding members of A Tribe Called Quest, Dru as a concert programmer and producer and Adam at Rhino Records and Sony Legacy. When and where did the label begin? The label began as an accompaniment piece to the concerts we had been producing under the same name as the label, Jazz Is Dead. As we continued to bring rare talents to Los Angeles, we realized that time with these jazz masters is sacred, but moreover very limited. The record label started as a way to pay homage through a catalog to the great master musicians that we love. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? We like to leave this for people to make up their own mind. To provoke peoples thoughts and let them arrive at a radical decision of their own. How has the label changed since it started? I think the label has refined over the last two years, but we’re still in our infant stage. It will be exciting to see how it all rolls out over the next 18 months with all that we have planned. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We have a very diverse team over here. All of us- a scrapy bunch of music lovers that are fighting to get as many ears on our music as possible. Now with events coming back around, our staff will expand again. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? We started the label during the pandemic. So we don’t know what it would’ve been like before the pandemic. Having the label has been a great source for joy and distraction while everything else is seemingly crumbling out in the world. We’ve been fortunate to find our footing in such times. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Our homebase is in Los Angeles. Our studio, Linear Labs is in Highland Park and our flagship record store is in the same lot. The venue where we do most of our concerts is directly across the street from us. Having said that, 20% of our entire following is in Brazil and a good chunk of our releases have been as well. We think of ourselves as an ever-growing international company. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? The Katalyst is an amazing new find out of Los Angeles. We are constantly searching every nook and cranny for new music we haven’t heard before. Music that’s new to us. Could’ve come out in the 70’s or

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Each of us have a different release as our personal favorites, but i think the most important project we’ve all been a part of so far has been The American Negro (and accompanying podcast and short film). Becoming part of the social justice fabric is important for us. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? I think The American Negro album cover was a great shock to people. But in general, just the name of the label is a radical or wild act that garners quite a bit of attention. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We like to keep colored vinyl limited. We press 500 for EU and 500 for the rest of the world. It compliments our color scheme of each album. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Vinyl is really our main baby and what we care most about. Being an all analog production, the fidelity on vinyl really does it for us. We do limited cd and tape cassette runs on a release by release basis. How would you describe the average fan of the label? I would describe the average fan as hard core. They usually dive in and want to collect the whole series. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Dru and Adam are musically deficient. But we all know Ali’s lifelong music mission and Adrians been at it for 20 years. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Trying to find a world where vinyl is sustainably produced. What an amazing goal! How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Both of the highest order, as evidenced by the work around The American Negro campaign. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Covid-19 Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: All of the stores out there that are carrying our goods, everyone showing any love, we very much appreciate you. Thank you for letting us create!

SUN RA ARKESTRA Under The Direction of Marshall Allen SWIRLING Following the announcement of the Sun Ra Arkestra’s first ever Grammy Nomination for their album ‘Swirling’, we are offering the title at a discount of 20% for CD and 10% for 2LP for a limited period until January 31st 2022. Recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, the new recording represents the continuation of a heartfelt rebirth of the Arkestra under Allen’s guidance since Sun Ra left the planet in 1993, gaining new generations of followers from their regular touring across the globe. With a big band line-up featuring long-standing Arkestra members including Danny Ray Thompson (RIP), Michael Ray, Vincent Chancey, Knoel Scott, Cecil Brooks, Atakatune (RIP), Elson Nascimento and Tyler Mitchell, the album is a full-blooded celebration of Sun Ra’s legacy.

Tracks include brand new arrangements of Arkestra staples ‘Angels And Demons At Play’, ‘Satellites Are Spinning’, ‘Door Of The Cosmos’ and ‘Rocket No. 9’ alongside lesser known gems; the rousing blues ‘Darkness’ is recorded here for the first time, resurrected from the Ra archives by Marshall Allen. Other highlights include an epic version of ‘Seductive Fantasy’ (first recorded on Ra’s ‘On Jupiter’ LP in 1979), the freeform sonic blast of ‘Infinity / I’ll Wait For You’ and a first ever recording of the Marshall Allen swing composition, ‘Swirling’. “We truly hope that this recording brings much joy to a planet which is so deeply in need of a spirit sound and vibration,” states saxophonist Knoel Scott. “We hope it contributes to a change in the ominous direction of man’s journey through the cosmos.” “This new release is the Arkestra’s love offering to the world,” concludes Marshall Allen. “Beta music for a better world.” Originally released in October 2020, Sun Ra Arkestra’s ‘Swirling’ is available again now on all formats in celebration of the album’s Grammy nomination in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category. Features and reviews ran in The Guardian, Mojo, Uncut, Quietus, The Wire, Record Collector, RA, Pitchfork, 6Music, TSF Jazz, FIP, Nova, Liberation, France Culture, Rolling Stone FR & DE, WDR Cosmo and more

All Them Witches are known for their loud and lengthy live shows. 2020 found the band releasing their critically acclaimed album, Nothing As The Ideal. An album release from this band would traditionally be followed by a lengthy 18-month tour across the globe. Due to an international pandemic, the band’s touring plans were brought to a halt. This did not stop All Them Witches from assembling in a studio to broadcast a live set for their fans. The set was roundly received as an amazing performance and fans immediately inquired as to whether or not the music from this show would be available for purchase. New West Records is proud to present All Them Witches - LIVE ON THE INTERNET on 2CD and 3LP.

OVERVIEW All Day Gentle Hold ! is a celebratory collection of songs. Harder, faster, shorter and louder than any other Porches record, it’s direct and pointed, charged up and chaotic, described by New York based artist Aaron Maine as “the most energetic, off-the-cuff moments, collaged together into the most captivating songs [he] could make.” Maine says, “I recorded this album in my room between October 2019 and April 2021. The world was flipped and I wanted to make something injected with as much love, urgency, and lust for humanity as I possibly could.” After years of experimentation, this record was an effort to create the music Maine makes most naturally, cut down to its most fundamental parts. Without the structure of ordinary everyday life, he focused on the blind momentum of making music regardless of what would happen to his career, the industry, or the world at large. Fully embracing his rock roots and the guitar as his main instrument, Maine pared down the maximalism of Ricky Music to a focused sonic palette of two guitars, keyboard, live drums, and a drum machine. The 11 songs, written to work together from the onset, take cues from the cadence of The Ramones, the power of Nirvana, and the influence of teenage years spent listening to pop punk and grunge. Each track is totemic in its angst. Equally personal and universal, tapping into moments intimate, absurd, banal and strangely everyday, All Day Gentle Hold ! takes the listener on a dreamy, primal journey through the mind of a man coping with an incomprehensible time, reveling in the joy and confusion of living through it all. It was recorded by Maine in his New York home studio, and mixed and mastered by James Krausse. Praise for 2020's Ricky Music

"the most ‘Porches’ record to date -- an amalgamation of all of his previous releases that plays to his strengths" i-D

CARPARK / MARCH 4, 2022

THE BETHS FUTURE ME HATES ME The Beths occupy a warm, energetic sonic space between joyful hooks, sun-soaked harmonies, and acerbic lyrics. Their debut album Future Me Hates Me delivers an astonishment of roadtrip-ready pleasures, each song hitting your ears with an exhilarating endorphin rush like the first time you heard Slanted and Enchanted or “Cannonball.” Front and center on these ten infectious tracks is lead singer and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes. Stokes has previously worked in other genres within Auckland’s rich and varied music scene, recently playing in a folk outfit, but it was in exploring the angst-ridden sounds of her youth that she found her place. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.” From the irresistible title track to future singles “Happy Unhappy” and “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” Stokes commands a vocal range that spans from the brash confidence of Joan Jett to the disarming vulnerability of Jenny Lewis. Further honeying Future Me Hates Me’s dark lyrics that explore complex topics like being newly alone and the self-defeating anticipation of impending regret, ecstatic vocal harmonies bubble up like in the greatest pop and R+B of the ‘60s, while inverting the trope of the “sad dude singer accompanied by a homogenous girl-sound.” All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y. “There’s a lot of sad sincerity in the lyrics,” she continues, “that relies on the music having a light heart and sense of humor to keep it from being too earnest.” Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh. “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves—and then apologizing for it.” The result is nothing less than one of the standout records of 2018.

THE BETHS WARM BLOOD

The Beths’ Warm Blood is a strong contender for the catchiest record you’ve never heard. Formed when four jazz students at the University of Auckland bonded over their shared love of the pop-punk sounds of their youth, The Beths bring new energy to the genre. This 5-song debut EP, a deliriously pleasurable statement of purpose, comes crammed with enough blissful hooks to carry through most bands’ careers.

THE BETHS WARM BLOOD

Listeners for whom the tag “New Zealand indie rock” brings to mind the Flying Nun sound of bands like The Clean and The Chills may be surprised to find Warm Blood’s five unstoppable tunes landing closer to artists like Slant 6 and The Breeders. The nimble guitar work here moves from heavy riffing reminiscent of Sleater-Kinney to hazily bending lines that would make Stephen Malkmus and Mary Timony beam, while the joyous vocal harmonies from all four members bubble and swell to ecstatic crescendos that channel The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle.

LP (chocolate brown vinyl) UPC 677517012767 Box lot: 25

With impeccable production from guitarist Jonathan Pearce and stellar musicianship across the board, Warm Blood is a non-stop delight. Tracks like leadoff track and first single “Whatever,” the ridiculously addictive standout “Idea/Intent,” and “Rush Hour 3,” a playful ode to romance in this era of download-and-chill franchise films, take delight in the challenge of breathing new energy into the limitations of the 3-minute pop song. The Beths are now poised to take the U.S. and Europe by storm with their first western-hemisphere tour. This U.S. re-release of Warm Blood (released in New Zealand in 2016) offers a perfectly distilled introduction to a band that has become a live favorite Down Under.

1992 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees The Best of Their Late ’70s Nashville Sessions & Previously Unreleased Concert Recordings n the summer of 1964, Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records was attending a DJ convention in Miami. Florida record man Henry Stone suggested he stop in at a nightclub called the King of Hearts to check out a local singing duo known as Sam & Dave. "It was like 165 degrees,” Wexler later told writer Rob Bowman. “It was hot and they were hot...When I heard them there that night, that was all she wrote. I signed them up immediately.” Sam and Dave’s work with producer Isaac Hayes and backing band Booker T and the M.G.’s made them a formidable team. Their hit “Soul Man” endures today as an R&B smash and a unifying force between black and white audiences. This disc focuses on the year 1977 to 1981. Disc one offers reinterpretations of their older hits and new versions of soul classics. Disc Two features concert recordings from 1981 before their final break-up.

Nashenas Life is a Heavy Burden - Ghazals and poetry from Afghanistan Strut present the first compilation of legendary Afghan Ghazal singer Dr. Mohammad Sadiq Fitrat a.k.a. Nashenas, recorded at the Radio Afghanistan Studios and later released on singles by the Royal label in Iran. Nashenas first made his move towards music aged 16 in 1951 when he approached Afghanistan’s national radio station, Radio Kabul, with an idea for a broadcast and, impressed with his language skills, they offered him a permanent job. “I was in close contact with some of the big names in Afghan music like Jalil Zaland,” Nashenas explains. “My father had a gramophone and we listened to other singers like Ustad Qasim Khan and Kundan Lal Saigal.” After unsuccessful initial forays into singing sessions for the station, he honed his skills as a writer, singer and musician, playing the harmonium. Inspired by a movie he had seen at the cinema, Nashenas wrote a new poem and sang on air again after the evening news, using the name ‘Nashenas’ (meaning ‘unknown’) for the first time. Following a wave of positive feedback from the public, he was given a new weekend slot and built his reputation through film song interpretations, famous poems set to music and his own compositions sung in Dari and Pashto. Nashenas would witness turbulent times as Afghanistan found itself caught up in the Cold War and the early ‘90s civil war until it became too dangerous to stay in the country. Through a friend in the U.N., he was able to seek asylum for himself and his family and take up residence in London, continuing to work as a musician and giving concerts globally. Most of Nashenas’ recordings during this period were only made for broadcast, later surfacing on singles through the Royal label in Iran. Life Is A Heavy Burden is compiled from these singles by Chris Menist and Mads Jensen. All tracks are remastered by The Carvery and both formats feature new liner notes including an interview with Nashenas. The album is part of the new United Sounds of Asia series curated by Chris Menist and Maft Sai of Paradise Bangkok.

KEY POINTS First ever international compilation of Nashenas’ recordings for Radio Afghanistan, compiled by Chris Menist and Mads Jensen. KAINA

It Was A Home, RD: 04th MARCH 2022

KAINA creates generational music that surpasses borders, a unified expression of her native Chicago, and her Venezuelan and Guatemalan heritage. This cultural fusion is best illustrated on her 2019 debut full-length album Next To The Sun—a project that established her as a leader in a movement of artists whose work hinges on identity and representation. KAINA has continued to push this narrative through her brand of sweet-hearted optimism, which she uses to uplift and build community. Over the years, she has crafted a sound that is gentle, yet full of intent, and built a songwriting practice that explores love, legacy, and ancestry. She has also brought this on the road on national tours supporting artists like Sleater-Kinney (who make an appearance on It Was A Home), Cuco, Durand Jones, and so on.

KAINA It Was A Home Release Date: 04th March 2022 Label: City Slang Genre: Alternative R&B, Pop

On It Was A Home, KAINA reflects on her modest upbringing, and the loss of sharing space with her family and friends in recent years, as COVID made it difficult to do so. She also deepens her storied lyricism with self reflection and self love, and how her upbringing allowed her to occupy that emotional space. This album finds her continuing to be a leader, not only in her community in Chicago, but to artists around the world honing in on their craft.

CARPARK / MARCH 4, 2022

FAT TONY EXOTICA

Storytelling isn’t merely a vehicle for self-expression, it’s a mode of transportation. A twoway mirror in which we process gilded dreams and grotesque nightmares, the transgression of cultural taboos and the upholding of ancient tradition. It’s also the animating idea behind much of the greatest popular music ever made. Consider Exotica, the new album from Houston iconoclast, Fat Tony, the latest brilliant entry in that fabled tradition, what Outkast once described as “shooting game in the form of story rapping.” While hip-hop supplies the foundation of the Third Ward native’s assault on genre, his futuristic soundclash encompasses seductive velour soul, lecherous French chansons, fluorescent new wave, and even splashes of African pop and reggae; the latter two being the residual effect of Tony’s Nigerian heritage and a sojourn to Jamaica to record the Carpark Records-released album with engineer, Abijah Livingston. “This album is an ode to the art of storytelling through music,” the polymath born Anthony Lawson Jude Ifeanyichukwu Obiawunaotu says, distilling Exotica’s essence. “Picture records like The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. Artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, or Bob Marley. Every lyric was carefully considered to make sure we properly conveyed each character’s narrative and motivations. I wanted to create a world of unique stories with room for each to be interpreted in distinct ways.” Assembling a Manhattan Project-style team of experts, the atom-splitting production came via Tony and his longtime collaborator, GLDNEYE (aka Tom Cruz), and engineering via Livingston and Brooklyn’s Steel Tipped Dove. To make the Third Coast cypher complete, Bun B pops up on “What Wake You Up,” courtesy of a cross-island dash where Tony paid visit to the legendary underground king, then vacationing in Montego Bay. Each song is a rich and compact iteration of rap short fiction: Biggie’s “I Got a Story to Tell” channeled through John Cheever. Take lead single “Feelin’ Groovy,” a frantic meditation on lust, desire, and the notion of throwing it all away while puffing on a Black & Mild. Picture something like if Fat Pat fronted Scritti Politti. Or “Gambling Man,” where Tony one-ups the late great Kenny Rogers to tell the story of a ne’er-do-well schemer named Johnny, obsessed with the thrill of the roller coaster emotions before he discovers whether he’ll win or lose. If the Tom Tom Club knew every word to DJ Screw’s Wineberry Over Gold, it would probably sound like this. Bob Dylan once famously said that an artist should “always be in the state of becoming.” And in the case of Fat Tony, Exotica is the latest stage in an evolution that has included everything from a bravura turn on the first A$AP Rocky mixtape to co-hosting a TV show on Viceland, founding a DIY Houston culture magazine to subversively expanding the parameters of experimentallyminded rap. Here is Exotica, nine new stories, more untrodden ground on the left hand path, a novel strain ready to be unpacked.

On From Dreams to Dust, their eighth and most recent studio album, the band’s exuberance to be together doing what they do so well is palpable. Characteristic of The Felice Brothers, the new tracks are a mixture of somber tunes with ones that are musically upbeat, all the while carrying messages that beg listeners to think deeply about the environment, humanity, legacy, and death. Many of the songs depict the passage of time, nostalgia, transience and getting older. The Felice Brothers, Ian (guitar and lead vocals) and James (multi-instrumentalist and vocals), hail from the Catskills, NY, where their early songs echoed off subway walls and kept company with travelers and vagrants. Their current lineup, with the addition of bassist and inaugural female Felice member Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst, Jade Bird) and drummer Will Lawrence (also a singer/songwriter) as their rhythm section, promises to be the best yet.

❝ strong contender for album of the year.” - Americana Highways ❝...a ...the sounds created here are some of the band’s most outstanding.” ❝ No Depression ❝ The Felice Brothers are the best band playing in America today.” - Ian O’Neal (Deer Tick) ...romping honky-tonk existentialism.” - Jon Pareles, The New York Times

SHLOHMO THE END PINK VINYL EDITION Three years after its initial release, Friends of Friends present Shlohmo's seminal third studio album 'The End' on pink vinyl for the first time - an album that brought Shlohmo on a billboard on Times Square and saw him in BBC's Essential Mix seat. “The album is vaguely about the end of the world, but from the viewpoint of smoking on the couch during the extinction event. Reading a nice book while the meteor hits. The fake peace of insularity during chaos,” says Henry Laufer on his new record. ‘The End’ is a thunderous apocalyptic masterpiece that sees the LA producer delve deep into his vast skillset. Drawing inspiration from his interest in cults who view the end of days as an occasion to relish, ‘The End’ is the sound of impending doom bringing calmness in its futility. It’s a beast of a record from an artist at the top of his game and boasting a list of recent collaborators including Post Malone, Corbin, Joji, Chance The Rapper, Yung Lean, Lil Yachty, Banks & Jeremih. Album opener and first single ‘Rock Music’ acted as a palette of discovery for where Laufer wanted the album to exist in. The drums were done with toy drum machines and a Mini-Korg Monotron delay, which he ended up using throughout album as well as the synth sounds from Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operators. “Like a beautiful anxious wreck, it’s a huge fucking mess and one of my favourite messes I’ve made,” he muses. Utilising a lot of the same instruments and process as ‘Rock Music,’ the title track is from the same world of “crumbling, warping shit,” as he calls it, and ‘Hopeless’ is an ode to goth and new wave. ‘Headache of the Year’ and ‘Ungrateful’ are a tale of two halves, the former a nod to the doom metal and hardcore he grew up on, and the latter a continuation made within the same session. All the vocals on ‘Best of Me’ are sample of himself. “This one feels like visiting my old brain form 2012 and reminiscent of my music form that time with new sensibilities,” he says. Recorded on cassette, played on his Dad’s upright piano and then chopped up the chords on his computer, he describes ‘We Sat in The Car’ as his secret favourite. “The very end of the song I think are my favourite 30 seconds on the whole record.” ‘Watching A Video’ feels like scrolling through a Youtube blackhole with your significant other under a warm blanket, while missiles pass overhead and ‘Be Myself’ is doing ecstasy alone in the dark. The sister song to an old one called ‘Empty Pools,’ ethereal closing track ‘Still Life’ was recorded in one take through a delay/loop pedal was written at a time when Laufer was recording a lot of guitar for the film score he was working on. It’s a lush and fitting end to a mammoth return from Laufer, who throughout ‘The End’ manages to conjure a sense of hope amidst impending fatalness.

APHELION STREET DATE: MARCH 4TH 2022 APHELION - the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. Celebrating a remarkable year for the band who made a triumphant returned “from the grave and ready to rave” in 2021 with the acclaimed “As Days Get Dark” album, their first release in 16 years, is marked with this special limited edition release of tracks from that album’s recording session. One year on, these two tracks, Aphelion on the A side and Flutter on the B side that didn’t make the final cut are coming to you via this sun blast coloured 7” vinyl release limited to 2000 copies worldwide.

“These two songs were written, recorded and mixed during the sessions for As Days Get Dark – but as much we loved them, we couldn't find a place for them on the final album. Maybe it's because they seem to have their own distinct identities, but sometimes a song just sounds better on its own, when it's not part of a crowd and vying for attention. So, to celebrate the anniversary of the album's release, we present As Days Get Dark's two runaway loners; a couple of black sheep who might not click with the rest of the family but, even though they aren't very happy, are still worth a cuddle.”

Pluto is the first release from legendary Norwegian rock band Seigmen. Called “an epiphany” by the Norwegian music press, Seigmen took the Norwegian underground by storm. The five tracks are heavy, repetative and melancholic, with brooding and sinister lyrics. Originally self-released by the band, this 5 track mini album was soon re-released by Sony after a skyrocketing demand. Seigmen created their own niche, with doomy and grungy riffs, adventures, soul searching and lyrics about symbolism, philosophy and religion – and they quickly became Norway’s biggest alternative rock band. . Ameneon is the second album from legendary Norwegian rock band Seigmen. Originally released in 1993, this was lightyears away from what most Norwegian rock bands were doing. The band themselves called their music “Massive Plutonic Gothcore”, a description that still seems fitting for this album. Originally slated for self-release, Ameneon was quickly snapped up by Sony Music Norway after they heard the massive track Mesusah on a compilation CD – a song that is still essential to any Seigmen concert to this day. Seigmen created their own niche, with doomy and grungy riffs, adventures, soul searching and lyrics about symbolism, philosophy and religion – and they quickly became Norway’s biggest alternative rock band. Seigmen’s Total album was a landmark for all of Norwegian rock. Produced by the legendary Sylvia Massy, the album is a sonic masterpiece – with a super clear and rock steady rhythm section, highlighting the signature sounds of bass player Kim Ljung and drummer Noralf Ronthi – inspired by Massy’s previous work on Tool’s Undertow album. Adding Marius Roth and Sverre Økshoff doing dueling delay guitars, with Alex Møklebust’s haunting vocals on top, this is a very special piece of Norwegian melancholy alternative rock. Long out of print, and never issued on vinyl, this album is a must-have for fans of mid 90’s alternative rock, or Norwegian rock in general. . Skinless Takes a Flight • For fans of Crumb, Mothers, Great Grandpa, Duster, Floatie; florid indie rock. • US college radio campaign through Pirate Promotions (steve@piratepirate.com). • Press campaign handled by Will Osiecki (will@topshelfrecords.com). • Music videos completed for “Basement Window” and “The Hand”. “[E]rudite and expansive and intricate rock that builds to some satisfying swells. Lead single “Basement Window” is a good example of that sort of build, as lead singer Meredith Davey’s words trip over themselves in a breathless rush to track’s chaotic conclusion.” -Stereogum, on “Basement Window” “[A] highly promising entry point into the underground rock world.” -Recommended Listen After collectively moving across the country from Burlington, VT to Seattle, WA, supernowhere revisited past ideas, transforming them substantially into florid, at times entrancing compositions which resulted in Skinless Takes a Flight. The pulsating “Circles” opens the album with lilted reflections on empathy, breathing in midtempo syncopation with subdued guitar tip-toeing around melodic drumming. supernowhere’s cast share a collective ambition for maximum interplay and collaborative writing, materializing cleanly knotted compositions that evoke vivid dreamscapes and the profound epiphanies drawn from them (“The Hand”, “Ecdysis”). On upbeat “Dirty Tangle” Davey’s voice glides through Pacing’s angular arpeggiations, carving her own rhythmic lane with her distinctive, descanting singing style. Skinless Takes A Flight notably would not have come to fruition without the help of engineer Dylan Hanwright (mix. Gulfer, mem. Great Grandpa, I Kill Giants), whom the band met shortly after relocating to Seattle. Hanwright offered up the studio where the album was recorded as a temporary rehearsal and writing space during the pandemic, which in turn gave him intimate familiarity with the music, resulting in an album that was recorded as intimately as it was written. Hanwright helped make the little moments shine too, as heard in the fleeting vocal harmonies on "Augury", or the spiraling chaos in "Basement Window," a further testament to the collaborative, everyone’s-input-matters nature that characterizes supernowhere’s dizzying yet meditative sophomore record.

n October 2020, Brooklyn, NY based singer-songwriter Allegra Krieger drove across the country to record her new album with Luke Temple. Set to release on March 4 with Northern Spy, Precious Thing captures fleeting moments in a world that has become sick from itself. From sharing a gaze with a man as the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s on a Coney Island-bound train, to taking a loved one off of life support, to processing the religious trauma of wine, Krieger weaves together a portrait of a woman trying to find meaning. Accompanied by guitars, bowed strings, and piano, this is an album about looking, and Krieger fills up each lonely space she enters with her gaze. Krieger asks you to look, to really, really look, so that you can remember something, however small it is, when it’s all gone.

SCOTT HARDWARE BALLAD OF A TRYHARD RELEASE DATE: March 4, 2022 Ballad of a Tryhard is the bold third album by Scott Hardware, the moniker of Toronto-based musician and composer Scott Harwood. It’s a record filled with unselfconsciously ambitious Y2K rock; a reimagination of experimental adult contemporary that tweaks the limits of soft rock with curiosity and appreciation. Hardware conducts a painstaking character evaluation to better understand the world by looking inward. Suspended and exalting, the album bursts with cinematic flourishes that ring with a courageous form of earnestness. HIGHLIGHTS: Crafted in Spain and co-produced with Matt Smith (Prince Nifty, Owen Pallett,) the album features guest performances from members of Phedre, Lee Paradise, WHIMM, Vallens, Blunt Chunks, and Jaunt.

Tracklist

Norwegian musician and novelist Jenny Hval, “a postpunk pop philosopher at the height of her craft” (Pitchfork), announces her signing to 4AD with new album Classic Objects, and in conjunction, announces her first North American tour since 2018.

CD/LP A1 / Year of Love A2 / American Coffee A3 / Classic Objects A4 / Cemetery of Splendour

Since her last album, 2019’s widely acclaimed The Practice of Love, Hval published the English translation of her third novel, Girls Against God, and released an album under the name Lost Girls with frequent collaborator, Håvard Volden. Following its soulful, almost jazzy opening with Hval intoning over floating piano, the lead single “Jupiter” blooms with shuffling percussion, and as Hval’s crystal cooing layers, it swells into a simple hymn-like chorus. “When I wrote the music for this song in 2015, it had no lyrics, and I did not understand where it came from. It was a strange creature that moved from one genre to the next like a slide show and crashed into a chorus full of cymbals,” says Hval. “Six years later ‘Jupiter’ has become a post-apocalyptic road trip. It begins by the art installation Prada Marfa in Texas, but turns into a game of identification and absurd imagery. The song winds its way through a desert-scape where values, genres, representation and relationships are breaking down. It tickles our death drive and throws us into space.” Hval’s upcoming North American tour runs coast-tocoast throughout May 2022. 505 Eno Street Hillsborough NC 27278 redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

YOU’VE GOT MAIL: Music from the Motion Picture (Highlighter Yellow Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: MARCH 11, 2022 Having put out the soundtrack to the all-time great rom-com Sleepless in Seattle on vinyl, you better believe we’re going to release You’ve Got Mail, too! After all, the two films shared the same writer/director (Nora Ephron), co-stars (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan), and even kinda the same plot (except this time instead of a radio show it’s an online chat room that brings the two lovebirds together, complete with hysterically out-of-date, dial-up email graphics). But most importantly, both movies boasted boffo soundtracks; like he did in Sleepless in Seattle, Jimmy Durante has the last word (with “You Made Me Love You)” but You’ve Got Mail also features three tunes by Harry Nilsson and songs by Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Darin, Roy Orbison, and more, with a nod to the more contemporary set with Sinead O’Connor and the Cranberries. Our release comes complete with an inner sleeve containing a highlighter yellow platter…never before on vinyl!

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK (Sunset Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: MARCH 11, 2022 One of the great trio of romantic comedies starring Meg Ryan that were written and/or directed by the late Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail being the other two), 1993’s Sleepless in Seattle was arguably the most romantic movie of its generation, and its soundtrack was a big reason why. With artists old (Louis Armstrong, Nat “King” Cole, Gene Autry), new (Céline Dion, Harry Connick, Jr.) and somewhere in between (Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, Tammy Wynette), the movie’s array of songs (many chosen by Ephron herself) appealed to hearts of every vintage and tastes of every stripe, and the tunes themselves represented the best that the Brill Building and Nashville had to offer. Indeed, the film re-introduced a whole new generation to the unique charms of Jimmy Durante with his renditions of “As Time Goes By” and “Make Someone Happy” over the opening and closing credits, respectively, resulting in a boomlet of enthusiasm for the work of the ol’ Schnozzola. The music was so powerful, in fact, and so integrated with the screenplay that it helped gloss over the incredibility of the film’s premise, which, as you might recall, had Meg Ryan falling in love with Tom Hanks, a stranger she had never met, merely from hearing him being interviewed on a radio talk show on Christmas Eve. But such fantasies are what movies are made for, especially romantic comedies, and for this release of the soundtrack to Sleepless in Seattle on LP, we at Real Gone Music have issued a “sunset” vinyl edition that’ll cause you to gaze dreamily at the horizon (glass of wine not included).

IRMA THOMAS FULL TIME WOMAN—THE LOST COTILLION ALBUM (Light Blue Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: MARCH 11, 2O22 “Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas enjoyed a run of national success in the U.S. in the mid-’60s with classics like “Wish Someone Would Care,” “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)” along with the original vocal version of “Time Is on My Side” (later a massive hit for the Rolling Stones), recorded for Imperial Records. Following a short stint at Chess Records, Irma recorded for Canyon before being signed to Atlantic Records by the label’s much renowned executive, Jerry Wexler. A first session in 1971 yielded one single, “Full Time Woman” (produced by noted New Orleans music legend Wardell Quezergue), which failed to chart but was singled out by Wexler in a 2007 interview as one of his all-time favorite recordings. Undaunted, Atlantic arranged further sessions for Irma in Detroit, Miami and Philadelphia throughout 1972 – yet none of the material was ever issued until a 2014 CD collection. Now, some 50 years after they were originally recorded, Full Time Woman: The Lost Cotillion Album brings all of Irma’s recordings for Atlantic (under its Cotillion imprint) to LP for the first time! Irma puts her own distinctive, ever-soulful stamp on such tunes as the standard “Time After Time,” Bobbie Gentry’s 1969 hit, “Fancy,” and Billy Walker’s country hit, “Tell Me Again,” alongside the funky “She’s Taken My Part,” (the flipside of “Full Time Woman”), and R&B-flavored original material including the highlights “Waiting For Someone,” “Our Love Don’t Come Easy,” and two early ‘70s Philly soul cuts, “No Name” and “Adam And Eve.” All told, 13 of the 15 tracks on Irma Thomas: Full Time Woman—The Lost Cotillion Album make their vinyl debut (on light blue vinyl, to be exact); it goes without saying that this release represents a major addition to the Irma Thomas discography!

Road Trips Vol. 1 No.4 — From Egypt with Love (2-CD Set) STREET DATE: MARCH 11, 2022 There are only a few lucky souls who witnessed the Grateful Dead playing perhaps the most mysterious and majestic venue of them all, the desert grounds surrounding the Great Pyramid of Giza. So, when the newly inspired band returned home to San Francisco in the fall of 1978, they and promoter Bill Graham arranged for a five-night stand at Winterland complete with a slide show of their Egyptian escapades to bring a little Middle Eastern flavor to their beloved Bay Area venue. But a slide show isn’t all they brought back from Egypt; master oud player Hamza El-Din accompanies them here on his composition “Ollin Arageed” (which segues into “Deal,” a transformation only the Dead could pull off). And this Road Trip—which excerpts the final two, October 21-22, 1978 shows of the Winterland run—brings in some heavyweight homegrown talent, too, in the persons of War harmonica player Lee Oskar (on the “Got My Mojo Working”/”The Other One”/”Stella Blue”/”Sugar Magnolia” medley) and Quicksilver Messenger Service guitar giant John Cipollina (on the “Not Fade Away”/”Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad” medley). But for many, the highlight just might be the “Scarlet Begonias”/“Fire on the Mountain” pairing, which captivatingly captures the exploratory nature of both the band and the occasion. This one’s a “Betty Board” in HDCD sound, augmented in places by audience recordings…first time available at music retail!

GRATEFUL DEAD:

Dick’s Picks Vol. 4—Fillmore East 2/13-14/70 (3-CD Set) STREET DATE: MARCH 11, 2022 If Dick’s Picks Vol. 8 presented arguably the single most famous show in the Grateful Dead canon—5/2/70 at Harpur College in Binghamton—then Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 presents the most famous stand of shows in the band’s long history of touring, the 2/13/702/14/70 shows at the Fillmore East in New York. Just how good were the three sets that comprised each show? Well, when LSD chemist and band benefactor Owsley Stanley produced the official release History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear’s Choice), he lifted portions of each night’s first set and acoustic second set in assembling that record, yet there was enough (very) strong material left over to make Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 one of the greatest live albums in the Grateful Dead catalog. The biggest gem—some might say the crown jewel—of the entire set is the now legendary rendition of “Dark Star,” a version so potent, so telepathic that it formed the backbone of the recombinant “Dark Star” on the Grayfolded album, but there really isn’t a weak song on the album, and a rare live rendition of “Mason’s Children” even gives this one a collector kick. When Bob Weir says when he steps up to the mike at the beginning of disc one, “This ain’t a show, it’s a party,” he ain’t kidding—if you’re not on the bus yet, this one will save a seat for you.

CD One

Reputedly one of Dead archivist Dick Latvala’s favorite concerts, and the first of the Dick’s Picks series to present a ‘60s show, Vol. 16 or, more specifically, disc one of Vol. 16, captures a crucial turning point in the band’s history. There you will find embryonic versions of the songs that were to form Workingman’s Dead, as the group begins to steer away from the psychedelic, blues-based jamming of their early years towards the countryrock pole star that was to guide much of their early ‘70s music (and the friendly hometown crowd at the Fillmore proves the ideal audience for the premiere of the new material). The rest of the show, however, features the earlier incarnation of the band at its finest; in fact, it’s sort of an alternate version of Live Dead, which was recorded about eight months earlier and hit the stores just days after this concert, offering a truly inspired, 90-minute medley of “Dark Star”/ “The Other One”/ “Dark Star”/ “Uncle John’s Band Jam”/ “Dark Star”/ “St. Stephen”/ “The Eleven”/ “Caution”/ “Feedback” capped off with a 25-minute “Turn On Your Lovelight” from the previous night. Pivotal performances from a remarkable period of growth for the Grateful Dead.

The by-product of an intensely fruitful creative few years, The Universal Deluge marks a significant shift for the London-based songwriter, beatmaker and multi-instrumentalist Ethan P. Flynn, who inexplicably made his debut with a B-Sides & Rarities album in 2020. Reemerging as a more confident and accomplished songwriter plunging into the darker side of experimental pop, The Universal Deluge showcases Flynn’s distinctive multifaceted production methods that effortlessly combining electronic experimentation with stripped-back acoustics, all underpinned by his idiosyncratic voice. Flynn’s unique songwriting craft, ear for production and versatility has already seen him work with a diverse host of familiar names including David Byrne, Vegyn, and Black Country, New Road. In addition, Flynn co-wrote several songs and performed on FKA twigs’ hugely acclaimed album MAGDALENE, and Slowthai, who Flynn has collaborated with and supported on tour, has said of him: “Ethan’s someone who I consider to be as great as Bowie, I’m just waiting for the world to see it... he’s a legend in the making.” Undoubtedly, he’s an artist to watch in 2022.

Craig was overwhelmed with the success of Volume 1 which hit the Official UK Album charts; “It’s been a whole year (and what a weird year) since I unleashed Volume 1 on a music starved world. Ranging from Luther Ingrams’ If It’s All The Same To You Babe - a Northern Soul stomper extraordinaire from 1966 – through to 21st century soul champions Joseph Malik and Joel Culpepper, New Orleans born, London based Acantha Lang who Craig describes as an ‘independent artist destined for world domination’, the obscure and bizarre psychedelic 70’s funk of Your Autumn Of Tomorrow by The Crow. Volume 2 the only place you’ll ever get to hear Smoove & Turrells’ Exclusive Trunk Of Funk edit of Slow Down. The classic dance floor jazz magic of Mario Biondis’ This Is What You Are still sparkles, and the funk driven soul-jazz of Seattle’s Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio hits sweet and hard - this brand new Trunk Of Funk draws together old and new music from all four corners of the globe into one beautiful collection, or as Craig puts it “I’m confident this second volume of my Trunk Of Funk will tick all your musical boxes, give your ears and feet enough mellifluous musical fodder to last you until Volume 3 – Awooga!”

OVERVIEW The Zigzag Manoeuvre might be the description of Ping in 2014, navigating their way out of the ashes of their studio/rehearsal room for thirteen years. When the dust had settled, most of the instruments were immolated, but crucially, all unpublished pieces of music survived. The song “A Hammer Falling from the Sky”, which can be heard on the album, was recorded just two days before the studio went up in flames. A long and arduous process later, with a slight change of personnel, Ping now re-emerges with a roller coaster record, destined to inspire or dull the masses. Expect hiccups and downs, mental order and disorientation, out-of-tune harmonics, as well as motivating and unsettling lyrics: PING ( based in Oslo) - playing experimental Norwegian rock since last millennium. Inspiration from diverse artists like Zappa, Melvins, Fred Frith, Ween, dEUS, Tom Waits and Wilco can be heard through all albums, combining elements from 60´s roots to modern metal and electronica. The process of arranging and recording is unorthodox, where humour and spontaneity is highly appreciated; creative use of various instruments and vocal arrangements flow through a number of genres. OVERVIEW Out of the savage suburbs of Oslo comes the brainchild of Trond Gjellum – drummer from the legendary Norwegian prog rock band Panzerpappa. Suburban Savages are back with their third album, Demagogue Days, and continue to distinguish themselves as a playful ensemble with a willingness to expand the boundaries of pop and rock. The result is unique: The catchy simplicity of pop music mixed with the mind-blowing complexity of progressive rock. With a direct and to-the-point delivery of power, emotion and groove, Suburban Savages’ music is always entertaining, often hummable, sometimes danceable, and even reluctantly humoristic. Though experimental and eclectic, the music always manages to be pleasant. The extensive use of melodic percussion and flute, beside the classic rock instruments of drums, guitars and bass guitar, contribute to produce a fresh and captivating sound. QUEEN OF MY WORLD

Born of a shared love of hair metal, partying, and the reckless spirit of rock and roll, Washington D.C. / Carborro, NC duo Bat Fangs brings a fiery combination of shredderistic guitars and heavily harmonized hooks. Guitarist/vocalist Betsy Wright (Ex Hex) and drummer Laura King (Mac McCaughan, Speed Stick) united after playing a show together in their respective projects, with the goal of pushing Wright’s pop focused songwriting in a bolder, brasher direction. Taking up the primary songwriting role and shifting to guitar, Wright steps outside of the typical Ex Hex sound with Bat Fangs’ rowdy rock. Their sophomore LP, Queen of My World is a reeling, rocking mass of guitar and vocals that serves as both a reclamation and a reevaluation of a sound that was once a breeding ground for a particularly egregious brand of cock rock dude-bro. Paying tribute to the glam rock and metal sounds of their youth while offering a modernized alternative to an era of music that deified toxic masculinity as a core value, Wright and King represent a new model of Rock Star dom that’s less about the Stars and more about the Rock. On “Talk Tough”, the first song written for this LP, Wright sings of music carrying her into a near supernatural state, describing herself as being “in the cosmic sea”, and inviting others “crawl out the window on to a higher plain”. This otherworldliness permeates throughout the record, applying magical perspectives to real lived experiences. Queen of My World looks into life’s little moments and sees the mystical within the ordinary. Though many of the songs are autobiographical, at its core the record is a lens into other worlds, gazing into timelines that could have been and childhood memories so distant they may as well be past lives. As the record examines deeper into these alternate dimensions, it becomes increasingly psychedelic. The culmination of this is closing track “Into the Weave”, an instrumental jam that builds over a repeated tom groove into a full throttle barrage of guitar and drums. As it trails off, one last vocal harmony shines through, a sign that we’ve exited the mythical realm Queen of My World occupies, and moved on to the next.

An important missing link between the 60’s folkloric experimentalism of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, and the new age atmospherics mined by William Ackerman and Michael Hedges in the early 80’s.

Though Taylor’s guitar playing remains crisply unadorned on these 10 tracks, his technique and his compositions stretch beyond the folk roots. HIGHLIGHTS: All Morning Trip releases aim to faithfully reproduce the original release’s artwork and ensure the audio is remastered tastefully.

TONY PRICE

MARK VI

RELEASE DATE: March 11, 15, 2022 2022 Producer Tony Price returns to Telephone Explosion Records with his new “MARK VI” LP, an eclectic set of songs with a distinctly late-night feel. The album features 16 tracks of oblique drum machine funk, sizzling electro dubs and freaky public access TV atmospheres that spill into the streets with the combustible energy of a late night radio dance party before dissolving into a melt of bizarro techno-surrealist jazz by album’s end. His new record is named after the 1981 Lincoln Continental Mark VI that Mr. Price purchased off of a former radio DJ and archivist towards the end of 2020. In the trunk of the car was a bag full of cassette tapes of homemade mixes and radio show recordings from the late 1980’s. Utilizing early samplers like the Ensoniq Mirage, various drum machines and synthesizers, Tony ventured to create an album that celebrated the unabashed eclecticism, futurism and explosive production techniques of the music and commercials he heard on those tapes.
