TENNYSON ROT Release Date: February 18, 2022 Tennyson releasing Rot, his first full-length since 2012. Rot is a musical diary of a brain gone sideways, the sound of a young artist on the brink of his own disaster. Ironically, it’s also the moment Tennyson’s voice falls into place. Literally speaking, Tennyson puts his vocals on nearly every track, save one that features Rae Morris, but it’s also a metaphorical milestone. “I feel like I figured out how to be a normal artist,” he says “I have a way better handle on basic concepts … especially lyrics.” The songs of Rot still have that signature Tennyson charm, but the beats are a little simpler and the hooks a bit catchier. If it sounds tame in any way, Luke blames his ears. We all know where we were when the COVID-19 quarantine was announced. Tennyson was in his childhood room, but his world was crumbling for other reasons. “I started doing jumping jacks on my floor before a run, and it sounded like a water bed,” he says. “There was mold in my basement all under the floor; yellow and black, all sorts of colors. I had a cough for three months and had not known.” Forced out of his room, he moved into a “gross” airbnb while his dad ripped up the floorboards, but the trouble didn’t end there. “My ears were ringing like nothing I've ever experienced,” he says. “Everything was twice as loud as it should be. I thought my life was over. I couldn't wear headphones. It was just too uncomfortable.” Soaked in sudden existential dread, fighting for his livelihood in the midst of a global pandemic, Luke found solace in what he knew best. He wrote songs on his computer, more to keep his hands busy than thoughtful expression. “I was working on these tiny little speakers and making what I thought was garbage,” he remembers, but when he moved back into his newly renovated room and listened back to the music, the melodies made him cry. “It sounded like what I went through,” he says. “Then I spent that fall and winter grinding on seven or eight hour livestreams. I basically wrote and finished the album live.”

On her latest album as MAITA, Maria Maita-Keppeler digs into that crippling oxymoron of modernity, the constant bombardment of communication paired with utter disconnection. Due February 18th via venerable indie label Kill Rock Stars, I Just Want To Be Wild For You grasps passionately for a world that too often seems at a gauzy distance. “There’s frustration and desperation simmering underneath those moments of disconnect,” Maita-Keppeler explains. And from dreamy opener “Loneliness”, it’s clear that she’s not going to drift into apathy, instead seeking out the ghost-like shadow of loneliness itself. “I missed that rapport that I had with my loneliness, with myself, that intensity that exists when you're alone,” she adds. Growing up in Oregon splitting time between her mom’s Japanese-speaking home and her father’s English-speaking home, Maita-Keppeler found an expressive avenue out of her shyness through music. “I was getting so much out of these songwriters at a point when I really needed them,” she says. An almost religious zeal brought her to perform at open mics in college, to connect with other people through art.

Along with guitarist Matthew Zeltzer, bassist Nevada Sowle, and multi-instrumentalist Cooper Trail, the Portland-based singer-songwriter tapped into that intimate reverence by recording I Just Want To Be Wild For You in a studio located in a basement under a church. When it came time to record piano, the church granted the group access to the sanctuary and it’s vaulted, 40-foot ceilings.

“I write songs by listening and watching, trying to get to the truth of it all,” she says. The catharsis produced in that process comes naturally, and conveys to the listener just as easily as it does to Maita-Keppeler. In those moments of disconnect, of confusion, of isolation, I Just Want To Be Wild For You thunders ahead, forging unexpected connections along the way.

CLOUD NOTHINGS THE SHADOW I REMEMBER For a band that resists repeating itself, picking up lessons from a decade prior is the strange route Cloud Nothings took to create their most fully-realized album. Their new record, The Shadow I Remember, marks eleven years of touring, a return to early songwriting practices, and revisiting the studio where they first recorded together. In a way not previously captured, this album expertly combines the group’s pummeling, aggressive approach with singer-songwriter Dylan Baldi’s extraordinary talent for perfect pop. To document this newly realized maturity, the group returned to producer Steve Albini and his Electrical Audio studios in Chicago, where the band famously destroyed its initial reputation as a bedroom solo project with the release of 2012 album Attack on Memory. Another throwback was Baldi’s return to constant songwriting à la the early solo days, which led to the nearly 30 demos that became the 11 songs on The Shadow I Remember. Instead of sticking to a tried-but-true formula, his songwriting stretched out while digging deeper into his melodic talents. “I felt like I was locked in a character,” Baldi says of becoming a reliable supplier of heavy, hook-filled rock songs. “I felt like I was playing a role and not myself. I really didn’t like that role.” More frequent writing led to the freedom in form heard on The Shadow I Remember. What he can’t do alone is get loud and play noisily, which is exactly what happened when the entire band — bassist TJ Duke, guitarist Chris Brown, and drummer Jayson Gerycz — convened. The band had more fun in the studio than they’ve had in years, playing in their signature, pulverizing way, while also trying new things. The absurdly catchy “Nothing Without You” includes a first for the band: Macie Stewart of Ohmme contributes guest vocals. Elsewhere, celebrated electronic composer Brett Naucke adds subtle synthesizer parts. The songs are kept trim, mostly around the three-minute mark, while being gleefully overstuffed. Almost every musical part turns into at least two parts, with guitar and drums opening up and the bass switching gears. “That’s the goal — I want the three-minute song to be an epic,” Baldi says. “That’s the short version of the long-ass jam.” Lyrically, Baldi delivers an aching exploration of tortured existence, punishing self-doubt, and the familiar pangs of oppressive mystery. “Am I Something” Baldi screams on the song of the same name. “Does anybody living out there really need me?” It’s a heartbreaking admission of existential confusion, delivered hoarsely, with an instantly relatable melody. “Is this the end/ of the life I’ve known?” he asks on lead single and album opener “Oslo.” “Am I older now/ or am I just another age?” Despite the questioning lyrics, the band plays with more assurance and joy than ever before. The Shadow I Remember announces Cloud Nothings’ second decade and it sounds like a new beginning.

Louisiana Red & Bob Corritore Tell Me ‘Bout It
At the heart of this album of finely crafted downhome blues is the close friendship of the two principals. Louisiana Red and Bob Corritore first met at the Delta Fish Market in Chicago in the summer of 1981, where they performed together for the first time. The following year Bob moved to Phoenix, Arizona soon to be joined by Red. The two worked the local clubs for most of 1982 before Red went on a European tour where he met his loving wife Dora and relocated. But the friendship remained STREET DATE: 2/18/22 and in 2000 Red started touring the US annually, always stopping in Arizona to visit and perform and record with his friend. These 11 songs come from seven different recording sessions from between 2000 and 2009. Red passed away Feb 25, 2012. A deep musical and personal chemistry is apparent throughout this album. Red leads us through a program of all original songs and Bob’s brilliant harmonica is always spiritually and musically connected. Red’s stunning vocals and hard-hitting guitar are in strong supply here. Red’s blues are a testimony to his ability to draw the listener into his often painful, always hopeful life experiences and psyche. The combo of Red and Bob along with the other fine players on this album is pure unadulterated blues power. Shybits: a small piece, part, or quantity of something, nervous or timid in the company of other people. Shybits release their debut album 'Body Lotion' on Duchess Box Records. Berlin formed and based expat trio Shybits have been spitting out tunes since 2018, lead by British frontman Liam, Italian bassplayer Piero and South African Megan, they have been playing their mish mash of post punk, grunge, garage and surf in the Berlin music scene releasing their debut EP "Idiot Like Me" back in 2018. The band have been making a name of themselves in Germany and last year saw them perform at Reeperbahn Festival and performing on the cult German music television show Rockpalast as well touring with the likes of Gurr and Turnover across Europe. Shybits will also be on the road later this year playing shows with Art Brut. Local Berlin hero Eddie Argos says "I love shybits, thats why I asked them to support Art Brut on our tour later this year.

LISTEN HERE Jeff Parker has been a cornerstone of the rock, jazz, and experimental music communities for the past three decades. As the guitarist for groundbreaking groups Tortoise, Isotope 217, Chicago Underground, as a sideman for artists like Joshua Redman, Fred Anderson, and Joey DeFrancesco, and as a solo artist, Parker’s work engages in a deep understanding of a constellation of styles while defying boundaries at every turn. Over the past thirty years, Parker has carved a name for himself as a guitarist with a singular voice in any format. Parker’s sound is instantly identifiable for his masterfully understated use of melody and space and for his keen sense for complimentary playing, ever bolstering the musicians around him to new heights. The Relatives stands as a milestone record for Parker. With the hypnotic spin of “Beanstalk”, the repetition and surprise of “Mannerisms” and the teeter of “Toy Boat,” the beat-driven focus of his more recent work peers through the swung groove of drummer Chad Taylor and bassist Chris Lopes. On The Relatives, recorded by Tortoise bandmate John McEntire in his legendary SOMA studio, Parker began shifting his compositional center towards rhythmic exploration which he would later elaborate on with old tape loops and beats on his 2016 and 2020 albums The New Breed and Suite For Max Brown. Around The Relatives’ initial release in 2006, Parker said the title track was his “attempt at demonstrating an abstraction of my perception of Relativity, which essentially means that as one moves in space, one’s perception of said space is altered by one’s movement. I tried to aurally capture this by having everyone perform various repeating figures on different tracks that start at one tempo, then ramp up or down to another tempo, and end together at the original tempo.” In the 15 years since its release, The Relatives has proved to be a revered pillar in the pantheon of Parker’s ever-expanding music. Listening to the sheer breadth of the musical landscapes traversed on The Relatives, there’s no mistaking why Parker is one of the most lauded players and sought after collaborators today. The Chicago music scene’s spirited embrace of communal collaboration and experimentation can be felt in each note as Parker seems to lead the band in asking one musical question after another. That ethos has followed Parker throughout his career and across the country as he’s spent the better part of a decade living and performing out of Los Angeles. Parker’s approach to the album captures the essence of who he was, and still is, as a musician, a sort of musical thesis statement to his career as a creator. “The Relatives refers to the notion of a community (in this instance a community of musicians) functioning much like a family does, and also the abstraction of Relativity, which implies that as one moves, one’s perspective changes along with one’s movements,” says Parker. “Since we’re always moving, we’re always changing.”

THE ORANGE PEELS CELEBRATE THE MOMENTS OF YOUR LIFE DOUBLE GATEFOLD VINYL: “17 songs that push and pull on the boundaries of a pop song.” While some artists hunkered down to craft intimate acoustic albums over the past two years, members of The Orange Peels blew up their sound with a huge, sweeping statement—a double album that stretches out across stately psychedelia, 80s melancholia, and electronic experimentation. As if to say, “if we’re going out, we’re not going out with a whimper,” the band literally doubled down with more than an hour of new music that American Songwriter says ”pushes and pulls at the boundaries of a pop song.” All Music calls it a masterpiece, giving it four and a half stars. Featuring lush string arrangements from New York composer Mike Brown, the minor-key hit “Give My Regards to Rufus” made multiple Apple Music editorial playlists and garnered indie and commercial airplay. It’s a tribute to songwriter Allen Clapp’s father, who passed away during the making of the album. Multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Gabriel Coan shines here, delivering enormous rhythm sections—sometimes just a single, propulsive drum take; sometimes layering multiple kits against multiple drum machines and electronic treatments (“Larkitekture,” “Birds are Louder,” “Pastels”) and locking in with bassist Jill Pries to lend the compositions a dystopian, mechanical, party vibe. The band’s move to becoming a trio just before the onset of the pandemic gave the Peels the freedom to stretch and experiment while bringing an expanded sense of detail. James Newton’s 1977 self-released solo-debut, ‘Flute Music’ is an unheralded gem of the 70’s jazz underground. The musical companian to Tim Kerr’s recent art book "Self Taught." Up Around The Sun consists of Tim Kerr on guitar and harmonica, and Jerry Hagins on banjo with assorted friends and extended family. Take a clawhammer banjo playing old-time tunes backed with an open D tuned guitar playing a style that might usually be found backing Irish tunes and you get an instrumental soundtrack that was once described by one listener as Windham Hillbilly. Out of Tim Kerr’s prolific musical career he is probably best best known for the punk band The Big Boys formed in 1978 with Chris Gates and Randy “Biscuit” Turner. Although the band only lasted 6 years they were applauded by many for being one of the most influential bands on the Texas Punk scene mixing funk, soul and rock into their frenetic live performances. The bands on Tim’s lengthy roster include Poison 13, the funk of Bad Mutha Goose & the Brothers Grimm, The Monkeywrench, Jack O’Fire, Lord High Fixers…and more. One thing that many people mention about Tim is his love of community and how his DIY self-expression has influenced many others. Things happened fast in the sixties, especially in the up-tempo world of rock ‘n’ roll. In the short time they were together, the Preachers did better than all right. UK eight-piece caroline’s eponymous debut album often cascades with force like an avalanche, squalling and rumbling on the edge of all-out collapse. At other points they slip back into impossibly fragile moments of quiet – a simple bassline or a rattle of snare the only sound amid a dark sea of silence. caroline know exactly the right balance between restraint and release. These songs are expansive and emotive pieces, their rich palette drawing on a mixture of choral singing, Midwestern emo and O’Malley and Llewellyn’s roots in Appalachian folk. “Sometimes things sound much better when there’s empty space,” says Llewellyn. “Sometimes you might populate [a song] with too many things and forget that an element on its own is enough.” Elsewhere on the record the band have employed a collage-like technique, combining snippets of lo-fi recordings from a myriad of different locations – a barn in France, the members’ bedrooms and living rooms, the atmospheric swimming pool in which they also filmed sublime live sessions for ‘Dark blue’ and ‘Skydiving onto the library roof’ – with more traditional group sessions at the Total Refreshment Centre and their studio in Peckham. The growth that began as a scrappy guitar band above a pub many years ago is still continuing. caroline’s astounding debut album is merely the first step.

PIERCE TURNER TERRIBLE GOOD An Irish-American musician in the truest, and most literal, sense, Pierce Turner lives half the year in his hometown of Wexford, Ireland, and the other half in his longtime adopted hometown of New York City. Both places are reflected in his songs, which frequently move between these two different worlds, linked through his keen observations and ruminations. 2012 saw David Byrne and St. Vincent collaborate on the “off-the-hook brilliant” (NME) album, ‘Love This Giant’. Having been out of print for a while, it’s being made available again on CD and in an effort to reduce the plastic used, this new version comes housed in a card wallet sleeve with an accompanying booklet and the heavy PVC cover from the original is no longer. ‘Love This Giant’ is a collaboration in the truest sense of the word, with Byrne and St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) co-writing ten of the album’s twelve tracks, and each artist penning one song individually. The album centers around an explosive brass band and is propelled by John Congleton’s drum programming. “There was no delineating what the roles were,” explains Clark of the recording. “It’s a collaboration I’m truly proud of.” The duo also split lyrical and vocal duties on the record, which despite eschewing a traditional guitar/bass/drums lineup in favor of idiosyncratic horn arrangements, presents itself as infectious and modern hook-laden rock.

After the success of “A Day at the Beach” in the summer of 2020, Airbag really wanted to showcase the songs in a live setting. Alas, due to all the covid-19 restrictions, a normal tour or normal shows wasn’t a reality. Instead, the band went into Subsonic Society Studio in Oslo, where they recorded their last studio albums, to perform an acoustic set streamed in the early autumn of last year. As the band explains:
2020 has been a difficult year for us all. With our new album, "A Day at the Beach", out in June we had planned to tour and play live for all our fans and friends but it was not to be. Still, we wanted to do something special that would keep us connected to our fans and also to say thanks for everyone’s support in these trying times. Doing this acoustic session allowed us to revisit songs from the new album and a few old ones as well. A new challenge for sure but a fun and inspiring experience. In addition to acoustic versions of 3 songs from Day At The Beach and the classics “Colours” and “Sounds That I Hear”, this release includes the previously unreleased song “Come on In”. Hailing from Trondheim in Norway, Arabs in Aspic has been mid-Norway’s flagship of 70s inspired progressive rock and proto-hardrock for the past 15 years. They’ve been described as a sweet mixture of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies. The bands first effort was the mini-album “Progeria”, which was released in 2003 on CD only. In their humble start, the band can be described as a mixture of the psychedelic space rock akin to Hawkwind and the heaviness and darkness of early Black Sabbath. At the time of release, they had done a lot of demos and were very active as a live band in the Trondheim area. Their rehearsal space was located at the club house of Hells Angels in Trondheim, which the police didn’t like as several of the members was semi-pro ski jumping athletes, and sport and Hells Angels wasn’t a good mix. Now, only Jostein Smeby and Eskil Nyhus are left of the original line-up, and Tommy Ingebrigtsen and Terje Nyhus has recently started The Flying Norsemen, an Arabs in Aspic tribute band. “Progeria” has been re-mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo. This one has been out of print for a long time, and finally here’s a proper re-release. Enjoy! SONESCENT
Sonescent, the new album from Matchess, came to Whitney Johnson’s mind while she was at the Dhamma Vaddhana Meditation Center just north of Joshua Tree, during a course of Vipassana meditation. This is a ten day period that requires, among other codes of discipline, the practice of Noble Silence: silence of body, speech, and mind. As this practice settled in and around her, Whitney heard the things not always focused upon: first, tinnitus . . . then, breathing . . . the heartbeat, and another pulsing (something unknown, but familiar). So she listened to the sound of her body. After a time, her mind became involved, and she began to hear songs. But as she was keeping to her vows, she wasn’t able to write them down or sing them and record them. It was only after she’d returned from the desert that she wrote down what she’d heard, to the best of her ability. This experience recalled the feeling that Whitney had after her time working as an installation assistant at La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House in 2016. During that period, they hung Jung Hee Choi’s Ahata Anahata, Manifest Unmanifest X. The process and aesthetic she witnessed there took up residence in her, changing everything in the process. The Vipassana meditation experience felt like another such passage, destined to resonate long and deep.
writing and playing abilities with relative extroversion; her mixes actively deploying instruments and songs in what might be called a traditional manner, the music tapping magestically into classical, folk, electronic and psychedelic antecedents. To listen to these records is to hear someone deep in meditation making music. With Soncescent, the record is the sound of the meditation itself with the music existing in an atmosphere that would properly represent its fragile nature, the delicate sound of something almost completely disintegrated. Here, inspiration was taken from John Cale’s pop records and the music of Phill Niblock and Éliane Radigue. The rendering of the songs in the mix is discreet, to say the least. For the silence of the unseen word absorbing the world of the songs, Whitney used binuaral sine waves, ARP Odyssey synth, loops and no input mixing techniques. The editing and mixing of this material renders it in gauze, smoke, and whispers — an exquisite barely-thereness. In the Matchess’ tradition, the album title is a word that doesn’t exist, but relates to something that we recognize as having a definition. “Sonescent” represents music in the final stages of its life, and the 36 minutes here are appropriately active, spanning a universe of sensations gently probing the bubble of our perception, the spirits of the world outside, ready to receive us.

She decided to score the songs from the desert for other musicians to play, which was a departure from previous Matchess recordings, where she played and sang the music all herself. This process took a long while; first the scoring, drawing the pieces back out from herself based purely on memory. Then getting everyone together to play the music. Once she had them all finally fully captured, it seemed right to place the sounds back where they’d come from — a silent space, upon which the songs sometimes only barely intrude, as if heard from a great distance. In the past decade, Matchess’ music has traversed outer and inner space, searching patiently for the unseen world that exists behind the world that we see everyday. When compared with the present work, the trilogy of albums released on Trouble In Mind from 2013–2018 utilized Whitney’s

Gábor Lázár’s “Boundary Object” is a collection of eight real-time recorded, unedited tracks made in Budapest and Prague between 2020 and 2022 using a self-designed compositional interface. It's Gábor Lázár’s second album for Planet Mu following “Source” in 2020. The title comes from the idea of a Boundary object as a flexible concept of sociology and computation of how collaborations could happen between groups of people who have different kinds of backgrounds and different levels of knowledge. A Boundary object could be anything which translates between these groups to make a collaboration happen. Boundary objects are plastic, interpreted differently across communities but with enough common identity across social words and contexts to maintain integrity. This is a neat summary of how Gábor’s approach and working process led to his music on this album. Prismatic, flexible, and functioning on different levels of interpretation.

On “Boundary Object”, the shiny surfaces and uniformity of “Source” have collapsed inward, leaving intact the recognisable pulse and frames of his music. While each individual track has a nonlinear structure, the album as a whole has a strong narrative. Passages that start out Trance-like and familiar warp and weft into different shapes as if Gábor is examining the music like a 3d object, pulling at the edges, breaking and rebuilding what he examines, turning expectations inside-out. “Boundary Object” is intense, full-spectrum and a lot of fun. NIAGARA Parva Naturalia A compilation of tracks from out-of-print 12”s and rare CD-Rs from the Lisbon-based trio. The tracks are united by a sense of live improvisation with electronic gear, even as they stylistically run a wide gamut, taking in mutant disco, raw acid, post-punk, lo-fi house, tropical ambient and unclassifiable experiments in sound. Most closely associated with their home city’s Principe Discos label, Niagara have also self-released a number of homemade CD-Rs on their own Ascender imprint, and recently dropped Veneza, a collection of beatless excursions recorded at the 2017 Venice Biennale. The harshness and extreme sounds of “WoduridaR”, is a return to the roots for the viking metal legends Helheim. The album is a result of a fusion between their former releases “LandawarijaR” and “Rignir”, and they’ve returned to the aggression one could hear on “LandawarijaR”. However, as “Rignir” presented something new and exciting that the band enjoyed, a lot of the atmospheres, focus of melodies and the use of clean vocals is also a big part of the new album. “WoduridaR”, the eleventh full length album from Helheim, more or less sums up their almost 30 years long career, with elements from all their album combining the harshness from the first ones to the vocal arrangements on “Rignir”. “WoduridaR” is an Old Norse word, that can be translated to “the wild rider”. You can draw lines from that to Odins many names and meanings. For Helheim and their new album, all the songs are conceptual free from each other, and tells their own story.
