OVERVIEW

D

URING T HE COURSE OF HIS CAREER, T HE

legendary creator of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti, used his music to lament social injustices and political corruption in his native Nigeria. His music, a compelling blend of American funk and West African highlife, often locked into spellbinding grooves that seemed to go on forever. Yet that was the point: to fall deep into the rhythm and dance away the hardship. While this impacted Nigeria and the entire world, it also affected Fela’s son Femi and his son Made, both of whom carry his legacy as torchbearers for change. On February 5th, Partisan Records, home to Fela’s catalog, will release two albums from Femi and Made — both very much in the tradition of Fela’s music, but with different scopes. Femi’s album, Stop The Hate, radiates the unique Afrobeat sound that he has forged throughout his long career, affirming with conviction what his father would’ve claimed in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Made’s album, For(e)ward, is a modern and progressive freedom manifesto, pushing boundaries of the subgenre even further. Both will be packaged into a double album called Legacy + that, when taken as a whole, bolsters the rich musical heritage of the Kuti name. Yet this isn’t just about honoring Fela, it’s also personal for Femi and Made, a father and son with deep creative synergy. Both albums that make up ‘Legacy +’ are steeped in the tradition of Afrobeat invented by Fela, but each also offers their own unique vision. Femi’s ‘Stop The Hate’ honors Fela in a traditionally fun, sharply political, and affirming way. Meanwhile Made’s ‘For(e)ward’ is a modern and progressive freedom manifesto, pushing boundaries of the subgenre even further. Made also performs every instrument on his album!

AARON LEE TASJAN TASJAN! TASJAN! TASJAN! February 5, 2021 TRACK LISTING 1. Sunday Women 2. Computer of Love 3. Up All Night 4. Another Lonely Day 5. Don’t Overthink It 6. Cartoon Music 7. Feminine Walk 8. Dada Bois 9. Now You Know 10. Not That Bad 11. Got What I Wanted Every now and then an artist comes along who makes you remember why you started listening to albums in the first place: Aaron Lee Tasjan is that artist. With his wrecked cool, off-center charm, and restless creative dazzle, he makes music with conviction that has its roots in rock’s murky past, armed with an arsenal of songs that spill over with humor, intelligence, irony, and at times prophecy. An obsessive creative, Aaron Lee Tasjan writes pop songs with a twist, a little overdriven, far too honest at times. He updates the idea of androgyny but dispels the emotional and social ambiguity with lyrics that reflect his own geographic and artistic wanderings. Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!’s is 11 songs. The man who began the album, is not the same man who completed it, transformed both by the experiences that inspired the songs and crafting them. This is not anxious music for anxious times, but rather music as an antidote for anxious times. It is the sound of the future arriving.

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD For the first time Black Country, New Road, release their much anticipated debut album on Ninja Tune Release Date: February 5, 2021 ‘For the first time’ is the highly anticipated, debut album from ‘Black Country, New Road’ - a new UK based seven-piece, who have gained huge tastemaker press and radio support in the UK, US and internationally including NPR, KEXP, WFUV, The Fader, The Guardian, Loud & Quiet and more, off the back of just two singles releases in 2019. They are the latest stars from the famed Brixton Windmill scene other acts from this scene include black midi, Squid, Fat White Family and Shame. First single “Athen’s France” was released on tastemaker label Speedy Wunderground, helmed by producer Dan Carey (Kae Tempest, Natasha Khan), ‘Sunglasses’ followed on Thurston Moore affiliated, Blank Editions. Recorded with Andy Savours (My Bloody Valentine), the album is the perfect capturing of a new band and all the energy, ferocity and explosive charge that comes with that. Featuring six new songs including reinterpretations of early tracks "Sunglasses" and "Athens, France", "For the first time" is a sonic time capsule that somehow manages to bottle the past, the present and the future. The band have quickly gained a reputation for their electric live shows, having sold out multiple headline shows in London early in their career. US tour plans will see them visit seven key cities, including NYC and LA, in 2021. ‘For the first time’ will be released on limited edition white LP, housed in a negative effect 12” sleeve for indie stores only, as well as black LP and CD for all retail. Back in the 50’s and 60’s the nordic countries were very popular spots for all the key players in jazz. A lot of them actually moved there. This amazing 4CD-box contains 2 full shows recorded at Stockholm’s Concerthouse using the best equipment know back then. First show is from March 22nd featuring John Coltrane (tracks 1-1 to 2-1), the second was recorded on the next tour in October 13th of the same year, now with Sonny SƟƩ as Miles’ sideman on saxophone. The rest of the musicians are the same on both shows; Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers and Wynton Kelly. Jazz history at its prime!

RECORDS

Real Gone Music Celebrates Black History Month with Two More Releases from the Black Jazz Records Label! In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, dedicated, in the words of Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension) founder Horace Tapscott, “[to play music} about depicting the lives of black people in their communities all over this country, where it has been turned around and people have been made to feel unworthy.” In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an AfricanAmerican since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (1971-1975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020…right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson, each vinyl reissue features the original blackand-white Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power that draw a straight line between what was happening then…and what is happening right now. Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative with the release of each Black Jazz album.

RUDOLPH JOHNSON: Spring Rain (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 5, 2021 Columbus, Ohio’s Rudolph Johnson drew comparisons to John Coltrane during his career; like the jazz legend in his later years, Johnson eschewed drugs or alcohol and spent his time every day either meditating and rehearsing on his horn. You can definitely hear a little bit of Coltrane in Johnson’s playing on this, his 1971 debut release for the Black Jazz label, the first of two he recorded for the imprint and the first he recorded as a leader after some sideman work (most notably for organist Jimmy McGriff); his ability to explore the upper registers and overtones of his tenor sax while retaining control is quite striking. Of course, this being a Black Jazz release, along with the bebop sounds of “Sylvia Ann” and the mid-‘60s Blue Note stylings of “Sylvia Ann,” there’s the soul jazz of “Diswa” and the groove funk of “Devon Jean,” all played by, as is typical on Black Jazz releases, by top-notch sidemen including drummer Raymond Pounds, who’s played with everybody from Stevie Wonder to Pharoah Sanders to Bob Dylan, and pianist John Barnes, whose work is very familiar to Motown fans (Supremes, Temptations, Marvin Gaye). Bassist Reggie Jackson, who appeared on the Walter Bishop, Jr. Coral Keys record we previously released, rounds out the quartet. First vinyl reissue of another stellar Black Jazz release!

CALVIN KEYS: Shawn-Neeq (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 5, 2021 Calvin Keys’s 1971 debut album for the Black Jazz Records label announced the arrival of a new star in the jazz guitar firmament. Keys had spent the ‘60s backing up the crème de la crème of jazz organists— Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Richard “Groove” Holmes—but for his first record as a leader, he was eager to play with a piano player instead. So he recruited one of the best—Larry Nash, who, besides being a member of the L.A. Express, played with everybody from Eddie Harris to Bill Withers to Etta James. Bassist Lawrence Evans, drummer Bob Braye, and flautist-songwriter Owen Marshall rounded out the group on Shawn-Neeq, which might remind some of Pat Metheny’s early work (Metheny acknowledges Keys as an influence), or Grant Green. But what gives Shawn-Neeq extra depth is that it comes from the heart; as Keys says in Pat Thomas’ liner notes, which feature an interview with the artist: “My thing was, I write about some of the experiences that I’ve had in my life.” Keys has since become a fixture in the Bay Area jazz scene; this is the album that started his journey. Another gem from the celebrated Black Jazz catalog!

THE BETHS FUTURE ME HATES ME

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com The Beths occupy a warm, energetic sonic space between joyful hooks, sun-soaked harmonies, and acerbic lyrics. Their debut album Future Me Hates Me, forthcoming on Carpark Records, delivers an astonishment of roadtrip-ready pleasures, each song hitting your ears with an exhilarating endorphin rush like the first time you heard Slanted and Enchanted or “Cannonball.” Front and center on these ten infectious tracks is lead singer and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes. Stokes has previously worked in other genres within Auckland’s rich and varied music scene, recently playing in a folk outfit, but it was in exploring the angst-ridden sounds of her youth that she found her place. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.”

From the irresistible title track to future singles “Happy Unhappy” and “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” Stokes commands a vocal range that spans from the brash confidence of Joan Jett to the disarming vulnerability of Jenny Lewis. Further honeying Future Me Hates Me’s dark lyrics that explore complex topics like being newly alone and the self-defeating anticipation of impending regret, ecstatic vocal harmonies bubble up like in the greatest pop and R+B of the ‘60s, while inverting the trope of the “sad dude singer accompanied by a homogenous girl-sound.” All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y. “There’s a lot of sad sincerity in the lyrics,” she continues, “that relies on the music having a light heart and sense of humor to keep it from being too earnest.” Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh. “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves—and then apologizing for it.” The result is nothing less than one of the standout records of 2018. Dick’s Picks Vol. 8—Harpur College, Binghamton, NY May 2, 1970 (3-CD Set) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 5, 2021 If there were a college course taught on Grateful Dead bootlegs (and if there isn’t one, there should be!), the concert preserved on Dick’s Picks Vol. 8 would occupy a prominent place on the syllabus. That’s because this evening at tiny Harpur College in upstate New York was for years probably the most highly touted and sought-after single show on the tapers’ circuit (Jerry Garcia himself later singled it out as a memorable performance); and it appears here, complete save for one song, on this 3-CD set. The first disc offers one of the most beguiling acoustic sets the Dead ever performed, full of gems (“Dire Wolf,” “Black Peter,” “Uncle John’s Band”) from the already-recorded-but-not-yet-released Workingman’s Dead, plus a passel of old folk and blues tunes highlighted by a beautiful, slow-burning version of “I Know You Rider;” it’s doubtful the band ever harmonized as beautifully as they do here, and the off-the-cuff atmosphere is simply charming. Discs two and three present the (very) electric Dead at their most probing, with a healthy dollop of greasy soul ‘n’ blues served up by Pigpen; highlighted by Garcia’s guitar and Phil Lesh’s bass spiraling ever upward in a lengthy solo section, the version of “The Other One” in the 40-minute medley that opens the second set is unsurpassed, and the third set’s “Viola Lee Blues” sports not one, not two, but three mind-warping crescendos, while their version of the rarely-performed James Brown tune “It’s a Man’s World” is as gritty and gutbucket as the band got. The closing “We Bid You Goodnight” is twice as long as usual because the delirious crowd wouldn’t let them go—out of print for years and a must for any self-respecting Dead library.

It’s the topic of endless argument, but, bolstered by the legendary Europe ’72 album and tour, consensus opinion holds that 1972 was the peak year for Grateful Dead live shows. And this Dick’s Picks volume certainly adds to the weight of evidence in favor of that view; recorded exactly three months after Pigpen left the band due to health reasons, this beautifully recorded (by Bear, presented here in HDCD sound) show features the organic yet focused ebbs and flows and unexpected improvisational twists that are characteristic of a classic Dead show. Among the highlights (and they are many) are a sublime, exploratory reading of “Playing in the Band,” a soaring “Bird Song,” a potent coupling of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” and a surging, emotional hour-long medley of “He’s Gone/”The Other One”/”Sing Me Back Home.” Out of print for years and a real keeper.

What followed was one of the most legendary and momentous label moves in pop music history: Dusty decamped to Atlantic Records, where, under the tutelage of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin, she recorded one of the greatest albums of all time, Dusty in Memphis, and scored such indelible hits as “Son-of-a Preacher Man” and “The Windmills of Your Mind” before moving on to Philly soul (“A Brand New Me). We at Real Gone Music have closely examined this crucial period in Dusty’s career over the years, with three previous releases. But there remains one facet of her Atlantic period which has remained largely untouched: her singles. The Complete Atlantic Singles1968-1971 presents the A and B-sides of all dozen singles she recorded for the label in their original mono single mixes, only eight of which have previously appeared on CD. That’s right…only eight (the ones that were on Dusty in Memphis) of these 24 tracks have been on CD, and these singular sides highlight how the move to a more R&B sound at Atlantic (also aided by producers Gamble & Huff and Jeff Barry with such players as The Memphis Boys and The Sweet Inspirations) brilliantly capitalized on the smoky tones of Dusty’s mezzosoprano to create some of the most potent blue-eyed soul ever recorded. Mastered by Mike Milchner from original tape sources, annotated by Joe Marchese, and featuring copious photos, The Complete Atlantic Singles 1968-1971 is an absolute must for any Dusty devotee or any soul fan to boot.

NORMA TANEGA

WALKIN’ MY CAT NAMED DOG (EXPANDED & REMASTERED EDITION) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 5, 2021 Now, here’s a cult classic album long overdue for a proper CD reissue! Norma Tanega was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice label, and success was instantaneous: the title song to Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album’s folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, “No Stranger Am I” is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega’s songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience to this day (in fact, the FX show What We Do in the Shadows uses “You’re Dead” for its theme song!) The previous CD release of this album came out in the late ‘90s and suffered from indifferent sound and packaging, not even showing the original album cover; our Expanded and Remastered Edition adds two non-LP sides (“Bread” and “Run, on the Run”) to present Norma’s complete New Voice recordings, all beautifully remastered (from hi-res digital files) by Mike Milchner of Sonic Vision and annotated by Richie Unterberger with added photos. A long-overdue digital tribute to the late, great Norma Tanega!

SELLING POINTS • William “Bill” Loose Was a Prolific Composer Whose Work You Have Heard a Lot More Than You Know • Composed Cues for Capitol’s Vast Music Library That Ended Up Being Used on Dozens of TV Shows • Went On to Compose Themes for Shows like The Hollywood Squares and Serving as Musical Director for The Doris Day Show • But in the Late ‘60s, His Career Took a Sharp Left Turn

William “Bill” Loose is one of those cult composers whose work you’ve heard much more than you’ve heard of the man himself. During WWII, he led the U.S. Army Air Forces Orchestra in New York, and then was hired in the mid-‘50s to be in charge of Capitol’s extensive musical cue library (at one time two dozen TV shows were using his cues)! From there he branched out into composing themes for shows like The Hollywood Squares and serving as Musical Director for The Doris Day Show. Starting in the late ‘60s, though, Loose’s career took a sharp left turn, as he composed soundtracks for some of the most notorious “B” movies of all time including the outlaw biker film The Rebel Rousers and Jack Hill’s The Swinging Cheerleaders. But what lends his career true cult status is without a doubt the work he did for sexploitation director Russ Meyer; Loose composed the soundtracks for many of Meyer’s films, but unfortunately only these two, Vixen and Cherry…& Harry & Raquel ever were released on LP. Which is too bad…each is a rollicking mix of rock and roll, absurdist program music, bump-and-grind jazz, and old-fashioned widescreen, string-heavy vistas. Real Gone Music is proud to present the first-ever vinyl reissues of these cult classic soundtracks, each mastered in 45 R.P.M. for maximum audio pleasure!

LONGSTOCKING // ONCE UPON A TIME CALLED NOW SIDE A Teenage Angst at 27 Jehu On A Rollercoaster Passing the Crown Autobarb Goddess (Pt. 4)

SIDE B Radio Agony Not A Jerk Equator Oscar Nite Bus

• First time on vinyl • Originally released by Queercore trailblazing label Chainsaw Records in 1997 Secret treasure of the vanguard queercore and riot grrrl era, Longstocking’s Once Upon a Time Called Now was both the odd duck out and, ironically, the recording with perhaps the boldest natural magnetism. Thanks to the confident, characterful immediacy of guitarist and lead vocalist Tamala Poljak’s pop songcraft and the band’s skilled yet quirky musicianship, it’s got a sound that leaps from the speakers to embrace listeners or shake them by the shoulders. Everyone from Donna Dresch to Vaginal Creme Davis to Phranc adored Longstocking. Today, with a vinyl release featuring new artwork by Portland painter Nathan Paul Rice, this ten-song collection is set to claim the broader, more diverse audience it deserves. Once Upon a Time… balances dry comedic wit and a wildly enthusiastic spirit without hitting a bum note. It scarcely takes a second to catch breath between songs. Team Poljak benefits from the spiky angularity and skillfully synced surging energy of David Gomez’s bass, Sherri Solinger’s drums and Woody Stevenson’s guitar and backing vocals. As captain of the foursome, Poljak’s words and guitar are personalized and political, expressing queer love (“Goddess (Pt. 4)”; “Not a Jerk”) and loathing (“Autobarb”). Classic harmonies and nuanced countermelodies reign supreme as the album touches upon Catholic oppression (“Equator”), Hollywood conformity (“Oscar Nite”), and musical activism (“Radio Agony”). Poljak has a knack for shorthand touchstones: Shakespeare, Prince, Cyrano de Bergerac and Dracula trade love tips while Mozart, Beethoven, Tom Verlaine, Mario Lanza, Kate Pierson, Donna Summer and Angela Davis signal freedom. Remastered for turntables in tandem with a collection of demos and singles, Longstocking’s debut LP is a record of 1997 with 2020 vision. In fact, the album’s title could not be more accurate: Once Upon a Time… is ready for right now.

Tele Novella “Merlynn Belle”

• Debut album for Kill Rock Stars • Indie Retail Exclusive Vinyl Tele Novella began with Natalie Ribbons and Jason Chronis traveling these roads, exploring these towns, and mining for gems along the way. Natalie, who owns a vintage shop, and Jason, who collects rare records, were each making music in separate projects at the time (Agent Ribbons, Voxtrot, Belaire), but a collaboration between them soon developed, and from the outset, their music embraced these eclectic and eccentric influences. Now, after several years supported by a full band, producing critically-acclaimed recordings and touring nationally, the pair have returned to their roots and relocated from Austin to Lockhart, Texas, where they have recorded their most heartfelt and personal record to date. Merlyn Belle is a homespun creative bricolage that pulls from influences as diverse as cowboy troubadours and folk baroque to tell stories that are at once cinematic and deeply personal. Painstakingly assembled using a blend of hi-fi and lo-fi recording gear, Tele Novella have crafted a cohesive pop record that feels equal parts mysterious, evocative, heartfelt, and sincere.

NYC's Peel Dream Magazine dazzled listeners with their recent release Agitprop Alterna, a smart album that draws from a wide set of post-punk, shoegaze and indiepop influences but still has an assured, unique sound. Now they're following up with Moral Panics, a companion EP that features unreleased songs from the Agitprop Alterna sessions. Far from being outtakes, these are all songs that stand strong on their own, and gathered together function as a useful corollary to the album. Songs like "New Culture," "Verfremdungseffekt" and "Life At The Movies" continue Peel Dream's investigations into those fraught areas where art, culture and commerce meet. Bristling with both ideas and solid tunes, the EP as a whole comprises a crucial piece of the band's discography.

Due to customer demand we are now making available a vinyl edition of this EP, pressed on yellow vinyl and including two songs not on the digital release.

Select Press Coverage for Freedom Exercise: “a gem that seems to have been plucked from the same pocket as Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker’s recent work” –Giovanni Russonello, New York Times “One listen makes it clear that he’s a majestic talent in his own right.” –Jes Skolnik, Bandcamp Daily

Chicago-area native Josh Johnson’s vital presence in the vanguard

of new jazz music is evident by his features on countless criticallyacclaimed projects like Jeff Parker’s Suite for Max Brown and Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings. When he moved to L.A. eight years ago, he thought his stay would be temporary. The saxophonist and keyboardist would spend enough time there to learn from his heroes Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, but not a complete geographic pivot. But eight years later, Johnson is still in L.A., where he recorded his debut album Freedom Exercise with three “musically omnivorous” friends (the very quality that inspired him to stay on the West Coast). The songs on Freedom Exercise reflect this idea of genreless exploration — a fluid combination of jazz, post-rock and electronic music. Ultimately, Johnson’s compositions are concise yet expansive, like an intimate gathering in a sprawling city. its own emotional wallop.

“He’s the kind of artist who really has a bigger picture in mind so you never get a sense that there’s any showing off here.” –Nate Chinen

N U B I YA N T W I S T – F R E E D O M F A B L E S Nubiyan Twist return with their brand new album ‘Freedom Fables’ on Strut on 5th February, the follow-up to the acclaimed ‘Jungle Run’ from Spring 2019. Woven around soul searching, cautionary tales and parables for modern life, the new album is the most accomplished yet by the Leeds / London collective, effortlessly fusing different soul, jazz and global styles with great musicianship and lyrics. “Freedom Fables reflects on the power of narratives. Each vocalist on this record explores their own memoirs, a freedom of expression underpinning our belief that music is the ultimate narrative for unity,” explains Tom Excell. “The record references a lot of music that we all loved during our formative years; you can hear touches of broken beat, blunted hip hop, highlife, Latin, jazz and UK soul running through the tracks.” The album is also packed full with illustrious guest appearances: regular collaborator Cherise features on the brilliant ‘Tittle Tattle’, calling out gossip through acerbic nursery rhyming, the loping ‘Flow’ dealing with the ebb and flow of anxiety and the epic Brazilian jazz workout, ‘Keeper’; UK jazz saxman Soweto Kinch brings a burning alto solo and rhymes to the determined ‘Buckle Up’ alongside the band’s own vocalist Nick Richards as the track aims to “find the door to peace” among life’s challenges. “Soweto is a trailblazer of the UK scene both as an alto player and as a rapper with a unique flow and important lyricism,” reflects Tom Excell. “It was really important for us to invite him to contribute to the album.” Richards continues the “dust yourself off and find hope” theme on the rousing ‘Wipe Away Tears’; Ghanaian great Pat Thomas voices a gorgeous Accra meets London highlife jam; massive new vocal talent Ria Moran (a contemporary from the band’s time at Leeds College Of Music) steps up on the sensual ‘Morning Light’ tackling delicate complexities of the heart and long time friend of the band, KOG, brings his trademark full strength Afro dancefloor energy. Shaping up to be a modern classic and a priority for Strut in 2021, ‘Freedom Fables’ is set to catapult Nubiyan Twist even further into the limelight and cement their position as one of the UK’s leading soulful collectives of the current generation. The album was produced by Tom Excell at Henwood Studios in Oxfordshire and mixed by Oli Barton Wood and Tom Excell at The Premises. Artwork comes courtesy of Emma Rodriguez aka Mooncrab. The band will be touring across the UK in February 2021.

Dean & Britta spent the pandemic months recording and performing live stream concerts from their living room. In September they released Quarantine Tapes - twelve songs recorded in their home studio, including Kraftwerk’s classic “Neon Lights” which Wareham sings alternately in English and the original German. Their neighbor in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Matt Fishbeck (aka Holy Shit), asked if he could remix the track; he wound up creating three very different extended mixes that are presented here along with the original mix by Britta Phillips.

Limited white 180g vinyl. Flying Moon In Space are a seven-piece band from Leipzig, Germany born out of live improvisations which are known to last hours at a time. Having clocked-up nearly fifty shows in their home-city alone, as well as support slots with The Holydrug Couple, Elephant Stone and The Sweet Release of Death and a couple of headline tours around Europe, the group have now signed to Fuzz Club for their self-titled debut LP. A shape-shifting blend of driving Krautrock aesthetics, vivid psychedelic pop and techno-indebted electronics. ‘Ardor’ - the penultimate track on the record, is a sinister, throbbing drone that clocks in at 11 minutes and borders on the industrial. Although they cite influences that span the likes of Can, Neu!, Brian Eno and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, ‘Flying Moon In Space’s incoming debut is indebted to the band’s own experimental live approach more than anything else. Their improvised live shows typically see them perform with four guitars, bass, drums and vocals, resulting in huge walls of sound that are awash with hypnotic motoric beats and orchestral walls of reverb. Talking about the record they say: “We gain our main influences during experimenting live with different rhythms, layers of sounds and other textures. The energy that comes up playing live with that amount of people takes our perception of music to another dimension. We developed the whole album during our live shows in 2019 so they really capture a certain moment for the band.” 1 Universe 2 The Observer 3 Faces 4 Baustelle 5 Steam. Water. + Wobbly is an active member of Negativland and the most recent iteration of the Thurston Moore Ensemble. + Wobbly has collaborated with artists like Matmos, Dieter Moebius (Cluster), Fred Frith, Tim Story, Tania Chen, David Toop, Zeena Parkins, and People Like Us. “The album is a soup of amorphous textures which play off of each other in confounding ways. At times it ends up lapsing into jumbled rhythms too perversely complex for any human to have dreamt them up. Other moments are serene waves of scrambled signals which end up being oddly soothing.” - AllMusic “On the former, it conjures a jolly Studio Ghibli march of confused singing bots, on the latter, a bit-crushed haunted house of synthetic spiderwebs. Elsewhere, he uses his touchscreen setup to slot more beats and bass in under the choir of interlocuting electronics, like Willy Wonka tap dancing between confused Oompa Loompas.” - The Quietus “This oddly melodic cross-platform collaboration draws on glitch and clicks ’n’ cuts approaches to allow for contingency and conversation to happen via an intricate loop of layered and rhythmic signals processed through code and error.” The Wire

San Francisco-based multimedia artist, composer, and improviser Jon Leidecker makes music under the pseudonym Wobbly. He is an active member of both the seminal experimental group Negativland, and with the Thurston Moore Ensemble. Over the course of a varied musical practice that began in the mid-1980s, Wobbly has collaborated with artists including Matmos, Dieter Moebius (Cluster), Tania Chen, Fred Frith, Tim Story, David Toop, Zeena Parkins, and People Like Us. Leidecker has released recordings on labels like Illegal Art, Important Records, Bureau B, and Tigerbeat6. After contributing extensively to Negativland’s live-mix radio program Over The Edge, spearheaded by the late Don Joyce and broadcast from Berkeley’s KPFA FM, Leidecker inherited the program in 2015. Popular Monitress, Wobbly’s second release with Hausu Mountain, builds on the machine-randomized compositional processes that Leidecker workshopped on 2019’s Monitress (HAUSMO96). After delving deeper into his arsenal of iPads and iPhones stocked with synth software and MIDI-processing apps, he emerges with a nearly hour-long program of new material. The album explodes with overlapping alien melodies, swathes of granular texture, and frenetic electronic percussion patterns, all of which stack into dense barrages of digital detritus and twist through rapidly evolving song structures without ever compromising the gleeful spark and the chaotic sense of humor that run through all of Leidecker’s work. Despite the overlap in nomenclature, Popular Monitress is not a remix album or a direct continuation of previous material - though the presence of the word “popular” here might hint to listeners that he has adapted his approach to somewhat more legible, however skewed, semblances of songcraft. Wobbly once again positions himself as one godfather of many musical forms that have shaped Hausu Mountain into what it is today: fragmented glitch (de)composition; ballistic rhythmic workouts that float in a dimension parallel to the dance floor; ideas that challenge listeners with fluidly unfolding structures overflowing with thrilling deviations. Wobbly lays out Popular Monitress as a song cycle comprised of mostly shorter pieces, typically between 20 seconds and 3 minutes in length, that each offer a compact shock to the system with their discrete mosaics of fractured tones and splintered grids. When he extends his pieces past the five minute mark, Wobbly still refuses to sit still, and though certain melodic figures might function as recurring motifs within the madness, his non-recursive song structures flip from idea to idea at a whiplash pace. Some moments of Popular Monitress land as jittering, carnival-core beat sketches animated by bursts of synthetic brass, orchestral strings, and mutated “rock” instrumentation (including a guitar performance by Negativland spearhead Mark Hosler on the riotous “Lent Foot”). In the instances when Wobbly pulls back the curtain and allows the voice of an unadorned piano to enter the mix, we catch a glimpse of almost classical grandeur before he allows the machines to subsume the real world back into their anarcho-electronic stew - or, in the case of the track “Every Piano,” a bed of rhythms programmed by Matmos co-chief Drew Daniel. Wobbly’s seeds of melodic and structural ideas come out the other side of his machines in disfigured forms that draw power from random chance, and exploit technology to chaotic and entangled ends. Though the particulars of his process can certainly fly over our heads, Leidecker charges his work with a sense of playfulness and joy that can’t help but entertain and fascinate those who tune in.

TAMIL ROGEON - SON OF NYX Melbourne-based violist/violinist and orchestral composer, Tamil Rogeon, returns to his jazz roots on his soaring and celestial new album, Son Of Nyx coming soon on Greg Boramans' new imprint Soul Bank Music (part of the !K7 Music Group) From conducting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the 2500-seated Hamer Hall to writing and co-producing his first full-length album in three years and one of the very few viola-led jazz LPs of our time, Rogeon joins forces with several stars of Melbourne’s thriving and acclaimed jazz scene (Allysha Joy, Sam Anning et al.), channeling the cosmic energy of Yussef Lateef, Herbie Hancock and the like. Whilst often not an instrument typically associated with jazz, violin greats from Jean-Luc Ponty, Stéphane Grappelli to Billy Bang, have gone on to become iconic figures in the jazz canon, yet little can be said for the viola. Often considered the older sibling to the violin, the viola is larger in size and the tone is a lot deeper, something Rogeon was keen to make use of on Son Of Nyx. “I didn’t want to make a bebop record. I wanted to make a modal jazz record and there just aren’t that many on viola. I wanted to speak with a heavier voice, more akin to a tenor saxophone. The viola is darker and thicker. It speaks slower”.

American Dreams Records BALDI/GERYCZ DUO AFTER COMMODORE PERRY SERVICE PLAZA

About three-and-a-half minutes into “Hermit Thrush/Vat Of Oil,” the opening cut on three-song free jazz album After Commodore Perry Service Plaza, Dylan Baldi’s crooning alto saxophone metamorphoses into something gently chaotic. As the song continues to progress, Baldi darts between short melodic bursts and skronk. Underneath, Jayson Gerycz’s brush-played percussion and drumming provide scale, actualizing the recording space - Gerycz’s roomy, organized basement in Cleveland, which functions as a studio, shipping center, and - prior to the COVID outbreak - DIY showspace. Though Baldi is in Philadelphia and Gerycz in Cleveland, together they play in the indie rock band Cloud Nothings - Baldi as singer, guitarist, and songwriter, and Gerycz as drummer but both are active in the experimental underground as musicians, collectors, and in Gerycz’s case with his excellent, uncompromising Unifactor imprint,

label owner. At the beginning of quarantine - a time when Cloud Nothings had to reconsider tours, releases, and scheduling for the year - Baldi & Gerycz released their debut duo LP Blessed Repair on Carpark Records, coinciding with one of the first “Bandcamp Fridays.” It may have come as a surprise to some Cloud Nothings fans, but for those who knew of their love of the underground, it made complete sense. “We tend to do the free jazz sessions right at the end of long tours,” Baldi says, “or after making other records, so it’s a nice break from the more regimented song forms that the other bands have, or from playing the same songs every night on tour.” For Baldi & Gerycz, free jazz is a release - something to break apart stretches of familiar songwriting - and because of that, there’s a lot of joy in these recordings see the raucous album closer “The Holy Retrievers (In Transit).” Admittedly After Commodore Perry Service Plaza

RIYL: Milford Graves, Sun Ra, Roscoe Mitchell

After Commodore Perry Service Plaza is a collection all about space, and is largely a quiet record. Lead single “Frog Congress At Dawn,” is a meditative piece, allowing each performer to breathe while showcasing the duo’s symbiosis. Baldi’s fluttering saxophone smoothly steeps the listener into the composition - Gerycz’s percussion considerately keeping in step. There’s a waxing and waning in volume, but the chatter never gets louder than conversational, speaking to the musicians’ ability to comfortably add to each other, but never overpower.

AERIAL EAST “TRY HARDER” OVERVIEW

A

S THE DAUGHTER OF A MILITARY FAMILY, East spent her late childhood in Europe and teenage years in Abilene, Texas. After dropping out of community college, she moved to New York City where she’d meet a group of musicians whom she would come to befriend and collaborate with (including Okay Kaya, Kelsey Lu, Wet + more). On ‘Try Harder’ she hopes to tell stories we don’t hear often. “I want to tell stories about people in Texas,” she says, “I want to humanize different characters.” Through deceptively simple lyrics and a conspicuous absence of percussion, ‘Try Harder’ is a tight yet eclectic collection of songs, both sonically and emotionally. East dives into what she has known - adolescence, heartbreak, coming into a new social consciousness, and managing a perpetual feeling of unanchored-ness. On album highlight “Katharine,” East offers a touching reflection on a once meaningful friendship now long faded. The string-laden “The Things We Build” is simultaneously weightless and profound, as East struggles to find a sense of belonging and ownership in both a relationship and life in general. Elsewhere, acclaimed Brooklyn-via-Norway singer Okay Kaya lends guest vocals to the delicate and cutting “Jonas Said”. East visualized ‘Try Harder’ as feeling like the desert at night, explaining: “I wanted it to be healing and calm, something you can listen to even if the world is ending. Western, but quiet and intimate. I wanted it to have gravity but didn’t want it to be heavy.”

Soul Jazz Records new ‘Two Synths, A Guitar (and) A Drum Machine’ is a new collection of current DI-Y post-punk bands shaped by the mutant sounds of no wave, punk funk and New York Noise bands from the late 70s and early 80s that collided with the world of underground dance music found at the Paradise Garage, Mudd Club in New York City (ESG, Arthur Russell, Bush Tetras, Talking Heads, Suicide, Liquid Liquid). Other influences cited here include Manchester and Sheffield’s industrial post-punk sounds of the 1980s (Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Gang of Four) as well as the 1970s German electronic experimentalism of Cluster, Neu!, Harmonia and Can. Featured artists from around the globe include Los Angeles D-I-Y band Automatic, New Fries from Toronto, artist/music collaborators Toresch from Germany, Susumu Makai from Japan/UK, Vex Ruffin from the Philippines/California and Madmadmad, Gramme, Tom of England and other UK groups That all the bands featured here manage to make distinctive contemporary music out of these 80s roots is testament to the wide range of other musics that are seamlessly absorbed into a modern melting pot of sound – hip-hop, the electronic European avant-garde, rave culture, and more.

HIS NAME IS ALIVE A SILVER THREAD

Home Recordings 1979 - 1990 4 disc, 60 track anthology compiling early work by Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive, prior to signing to 4AD. This set compiles 3 volumes previously released on vinyl, alongside a bonus disc and 36 page booklet. For the past couple of years the Disciples label has been exploring the His Name Is Alive tape archives, charting the development of their sound over 3 roughly chronological volumes - All The Mirrors In The House, Return To Never and Hope Is A Candle (the latter LP being released alongside this boxset). The full vinyl trilogy is anthologised here, alongside a bonus disc which collects together the best tracks from a series of cassette companion volumes that Defever compiled to go alongside each LP - 6Teen OK, Return Versions and Ghost Tape EXP. Whilst ‘official’ His Name Is Alive albums are much-loved by fans of the 4AD label in it’s crepuscular Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil period, these tentative tracks reveal a different kind of sound, notably losing the layer of prominent female lead vocals to reveal the shadowy instrumental moves going on underneath, with some tracks recorded when Defever was as young as 10. With help transferring ageing cassettes and annotating the results from Shelley Salant of Tyvek, the unearthed results are revelatory - a gorgeous sequence of gently decaying tone float made with an incredibly primitive DIY set-up. Comes with a 36 page booklet containing essays on each of the vinyl LPs by Mike McGonigal (author of books on My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500 and noted for his publications Chemical Imbalance, Yeti and Maggot Brain), alongside beautiful photos from the Defever family album. HIS NAME IS ALIVE HOPE IS A CANDLE Home Recordings 1985 - 1990 Volume 3

The third and final volume in a trilogy exploring the teenage tape experimentation of Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive. The beautiful ambient sketches and backwards loops of the first two volumes are still in evidence, but this collection sees the artist moving slowly towards more recognisable song forms. Much of the material contained here was duplicated on the infamous demo tape that caught the ear of Ivo Watts-Russell and led to elements being re-worked into Livonia, the first His Name Is Alive album on 4AD. Having circulated in poor quality form as a bootleg for many years, it’s a revelation to hear this music transferred from the original reels and remastered by Defever himself (who is one of the head engineers at Third Man’s mastering studio in Detroit). Some of the sounds here touch on the kind of dreampop which 4AD was known for at the time - the gauzy textures of the Cocteau Twins or This Mortal Coil, and predicts the saturated textures of the incoming shoegaze sound. But there’s also echoes of older, more esoteric sources: early minimalist works, 80s industrial records, even the blues and folk sounds documented by Folkways, but interpreted with a compellingly primitive home recording set-up. As the artist recounts in the liner notes: “I wanted to do my own Music For 18 Musicians. But I didn't know 18 musicians; I barely had two friends, and even they couldn't stand me.” Released alongside a 4CD anthology set that rounds up all the music in the His Name Is Alive home recordings series alongside additional material (catalogue number DISC369).

The Leeds-based art-rock trio, Mush, are set to release their feverish second LP, Lines Redacted via Memphis Industries on 12 February 2021. The new release, which finds the group recruiting Lee Smith (The Cribs, Pulled Apart By Horses) on mixing duties, arrives just under a year after their debut LP, 3D Routine, capping off what has been an obviously tumultuous, but remarkably prolific year for the band. With any prospect of live shows decimated, the group, led by songwriter, Dan Hyndman, has found the time to release two EPs (‘Great Artisanal Formats’ and ‘Yellow Sticker Hour’) and now a duo of full-length albums. Tipped previously by the likes of BBC 6 Music, Loud & Quiet, Uncut, Q, Stereogum, DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Dork and more, Mush, comprised of Hyndman (guitar/vox), Nick Grant (bass/vox) and Phil Porter (drums), present their own sonic idiosyncrasy. It’s a sound that blurs the lines of abstract surrealism, existentialism and social commentary; utilising guitars as tools in 2020 to stave off malaise whilst simultaneously commenting on the nation’s ability to fall into such dire straits. It’s a sensory overload of wiry tones that zigzag between punk, prog and sardonic-funk with a relentless ability to reflect society’s faults and apathy in a unique and acerbic manner. Whereas the band’s debut was very much a product of its time, something part-inspired by the political atmosphere of mid-2019 and a genuine moment of optimism when the prospect of a socialist government in the UK was on the cards, this new record uses tongue-in-cheek cynicism as a coping mechanism for the environment that we now find ourselves in. From one song to the next, Lines Redacted introduces a string of different narrators with each providing a different reflection on the Armageddon scenario that we are slowly entering, whether that’s bemoaning it or gleefully willing it along. 3D Routine presented a bed of scathing political jibes latching onto themes and decisions of the time. Lines Redacted mutates these ideas into something slightly more sinister whilst maintaining all of Hyndman’s razor-sharp wit that permeates the album.

BJ Cole & Dave Eastoe

So after over 50 years in music, what has B.J. Cole left to achieve? Award winning multi-instrumentalist B.J. Cole, began his career gigging with Irish Country bands on the US Airforce bases around the UK in the ’60’s. He went on to be a founder member of the psychedelic Country Rock band Cochise, who recorded three albums for UA.. As a recording artist, BJ has covered most of the stylistic territories, beginning with the psychedelic prog of 1972s ’The New Hovering Dog’ for United Artists, and then a hiatus due to the demands of his busy session career. Until 1989 and his breakthrough ambient album for Joe Boyd’s Hannibal Records, ’Transparent Music’, that combined Enoesque soundscapes with lush arrangements of Debussy, Satie and Ravel. Not content with dragging his Pedal Steel into the Concert Hall; BJ then sought out new territory in the world of Electronica, BJ worked with such leading lights of that genre as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Luke Vibert. Since then, BJ’s records have been largely experimental, and designed to expand the musical remit for the Pedal Steel, boldly going ever more deeply into the territories of Jazz and Classical Music; and then ...Where? Well, back to his roots of course. To his passion for the lyricism of Hank Marvin’s guitar, Santo & Johnny’s ’Sleepwalk’ and the music of the Hawaiian Islands, the sounds that ignited his musical flame. So who is Dave Eastoe? Dave is a great musician, a magician, a dabbler in essences, most which he found in his frequent sojourns in the Hawaiian Islands; a place and culture that he deeply loves. But to BJ’s great good fortune, he is the right person at the right time. BJ and Dave write intuitively together and Dave can play the Hawaiian Slack Key guitar style like a native. The musical chemistry between BJ and Dave is what makes this record possible. So what’s the big deal about Hawaiian Music?. Above all, ‘Daydream Smile’ is a statement by two friends who have a love for the music and culture of the Hawaiian Islands. It may not be particularly authentic, but it is passionate. It’s about time that the music of Hawaii was properly recognised for the vital role it played in the development of Americana and in the history of American popular music. Dave Eastoe: A lifelong musician / composer, Dave turned his skills to sounds and music that influence consciousness and states of being. During the 1980s he created 16 albums of music for this purpose, sold in the UK and Europe, then travelled widely with Tibetan singing bowls and Sonic therapy workshops, featuring on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Afternoon Shift’, then ending up in Hawaii where over 12 lengthy visits he found the local Slack Key guitar styles and the spirit of that music infused itself into his playing. 01 Slinky Hula Heaven 02 Down In Old Hawaii 03 Tipsy Doodle 04 Daydream Smile 05 Little Gem Waltz 06 Waltz Of The Dolphins 07 Paniolo Song 08 Muscle Beach 09 Blue Aloha

M OAT is : Marty Willson-Piper (the church,All About Eve, Anekdoten, Noctorum) Niko Röhlcke (Weeping Willows) We are happy to announce the upcoming release of the second MOAT album, POISON STREAM, coming via Schoolkids Records in February 2021. This collaboration between Marty Willson-Piper and Niko Röhlcke sees these two prolific artists working together again for the follow up to their self-titled first album, released in 2013. Marty is best known for his long tenure of over three decades with Australian psychedelic surfers the church, ten years with English hippie goths All About Eve and an ongoing long-term project called Noctorum with Dare Mason who is co-producer and engineer on POISON STREAM. Niko is a multi-instrumentalist and has composed for theatre, film and TV as well as being guitarist, keyboard player and co-writer in Weeping Willows, one of Sweden’s most popular bands. Musically the album covers an eclectic range but it maintains an atmosphere that mixes the weirdness of an eccentric English village with the long dark nights of moody Scandinavia. Marty as lyricist and singer co-writes the songs with Niko, some of the original ideas coming from Niko’s atmospheric soundtracks, occasionally a track is created whilst working in the studio and other music is written together in a cosy room, usually with guitars. If you enjoy thoughtful Anglo-Scandinavian-bent moody folk-pop with lyrical twists and turns, the occasional experiment and a timeless modern soundtrack to the past, then this may be the album for you.

Bill Stone Stone

Here I Am / Purple / Fog / Friends / Vision On Sherman Street / The Fate of. . . /. . . Jessica’s Lover / Part-Time Girl / Crystal Lover / Charlotte’s Town / The Fate of Jessica’s Lover Just when you thought every loner folk genius had been outed/discovered, hyped, and pontificated about, a new/old challenger lurks in the murky depths of time . . . and Maine. Sure, you have your Skip Spences, Dave Bixbys, Stone Harbours, and Perry Leopolds already, but have you heard the lonesome sound of Bill Stone? Well, don’t feel bad or “unkool”, hardly anyone has — unless you lived in rural Maine in the early 70s and grabbed his barely-ever seen LP in the day. Titled simply Stone, Bill’s mysterious album was pressed in the micro-est of quantities, covering wistful, airy psychedelia on par with the UK’s Mark Fry’s classic Dreaming of Alice, while still evoking the earthy, evening-hour melancholy of Leonard Cohen or Tom Rapp. Stone was also especially influenced by one Donny P.

Leitch, one Robby Zimmerman, and much trad folk, while growing up in his hometown of Old Town, Maine. Stone started out playing in a few small folk ensembles while also moonlighting with occasional solo gigs, finally recording this lone platter in 1969 in a pottery studio (!?) on a 2-track Panasonic tape recorder in Boothbay, Maine (where he says, they competed with a cat in heat). The LP features Tom Blackwell and Bill Stone on guitars, Arthur Webster on bass, Bob Blackwell and Skip Smith on drums, and Bill Stone and Beth Waterhouse on vocals. It also seems cover artist Doug Bane went on to become an acclaimed cosmic painter — committing loads of animals, psychedelic scenes, and Native American portraits to canvas, who knew? But we digress — anyhow, seems

Stone’s solo career slowed down after marriage hit, and he transitioned to playing covers in bars for cash, but after acquiring a masters and doctorate in education, he moved into the teaching walk of life. Bill published books and articles on subjects as diverse as school counseling and chaos theory — but now retired, he’s returned to music, even recording a new album of originals and traditional numbers, based on his experiences as a cab driver (another wrinkle in the Stone Saga we must hear more of someday — but for now check out billstone. bandcamp.com). So with Bill back in action and the world slowly crawling out of a disillusioning haze, now seems like the perfect time for a first-timeever reissue of this incredibly rare, happy-sad, gently delicate, Stone(d) classic of a downer song-cycle.

American Dreams Records

JORDAN REYES

SAND LIKE STARDUST “I envisioned the record as a journey through human expression over the course of one day,” says Chicago composer and ONO member Jordan Reyes, musing on his sophomore album Sand Like Stardust. When planning the album, Reyes wanted to consider the trajectory of American music, drawing a throughline from the oral traditions enmeshed in blues, country, folk to contemporary underground music, splicing together acoustic instrumentation with an experimental, electronic sensibility. As such, the album begins with the first instrument - human-constructed wind - the sole sound source on opening song “The Pre-Dawn Light,” which invites the listener in with layered voice and whistling.

The album goes through the course of the day, arriving at “Centaurus,” a synthdriven send-off, and the sole composition with lyrics, reinterpreting the classic lullaby “Mockingbird.” Along the way, the listener passes through dusty lap-steel ballads like “High Noon,” propulsive, lightlyorchestrated nuggets a la “A Hard Ride” and “A Grain Of Sand,” and invigorating, slowly-metamorphosing cuts like “Rebirth At Dusk.” Sand Like Stardust also inspects the cowboy - the good things, the bad things, and the ugly. “There are many cowboys,” Reyes explains. “The White cowboy often supersedes the others in visibility, but for me - having a Tejano grandfather - there has always been more nuance.” It’s impossible to separate the cowboy from colonization - even the Vaquero has its roots in New Spain - but there are ways to deconstruct that archetype, find the aspects that resonate. With Reyes, it’s the cowboy’s need for symbiosis with nature and its resilience, weathering hard conditions.

From there, Reyes adds acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap-steel guitar, trombone, keyboards, and an electronic drum to the compositional mix.“I wanted to push myself compositionally,” he says. “My first album Close was all eurorack synthesizer, a lot of which was automated by control voltage, but Sand Like Stardust has no modular synthesizers, seeking to channel the warmth, immediacy, and vulnerability To create a unique visual framework for of hand-played instruments and voice.” the album and the video for the single

American Dreams Records is a Chicago-based experimental label dedicated to showcasing art inspired by patience, intention, perseverance, hope, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than we found it. ‘Rebirth at Dusk’, he enlisted Chicagobred director and choreographer Eryka Dellenbach. Dellenbach’s sensuous, bodydriven direction and editing reimagine and connect disparate somatic realities from Illinois localities extending from where Reyes’ and Dellenbach’s personal mythologies overlap. Narrative concepts, movement and costume evolved further through collaboration with performance artist Ryan Greenlee and Reyes’ cohorts in Ono (travis, P Michael Grego and Connor Tomaka). Decidedly setting out with an ecosensual lens, the total creative dynamic opened up new avenues for meaning and interrogation of the cowboy figure as well as the ‘old west’ bemoaned by men of an old world, reasserting an absence of ‘countryfor’ old men.

Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Founded in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists to grow, and a space for established acts to break with tradition. Over a decade later, that inclusive attitude continues. Its output spans the new jazz messengers of the UK underground, fresh tangents in hip-hop-tipped-beatmaking, from snapshots of Havana’s burgeoning club culture to the indefinable sound of Melbourne’s rising underground. We are pleased to offer a wonderfully eclectic selection of our essential bestsellers and unique 2020 releases including the London Jazz future classic ‘We Out Here’ compilation alongside its Melbourne contemporary ‘Sunny Side Up’ both showcasing incredible music movements stemming from underground culture. Also the self-acclaimed ‘backpack jazz producer’ Kassa Overall mesmerises us with his Hip Hop infused experimental sounds in ‘I THINK I’M GOOD’. Listed in Time Magazine’s ‘Best Albums of 2019,’ Joe Armon-Jones’ ‘Turn To Clear View’ is an album that blurs the lines between bass-heavy dub, contemporary club culture and his background as a pioneering force in the modern jazz scene. Our passion for showcasing global sounds continues with a brand new project by 96-year-old Mexican drummer Tino Contreras. His new work features seven new recordings, contemporary jazz themes interlaced with 3/4 rhythms, written and recorded in Mexico City last year. Also included in this offer is the critically acclaimed album by Daymé Arocena, ‘Cubafonia,’ rooting her compositions in Cuba’s classic rhythms adding her unique contemporary flair.
