There was no great scheme. It seems unlikely there ever will be. The final track on The Leaf Label’s first release, the Boymerang EP, was entitled ‘Rules’. A misnomer. There are no rules.

There is no immediately apparent unifying sound here. Like a moth to a flame, there is a magnetic attraction to artists operating on the fringes - to startling hybrids and mercurial fusions - but always with the desire to reach

the widest possible audience. You will find Leaf in those places where electronic music, classical, jazz, pop, folk and rock meet. Those places where the sparks are flying.

Description

Key Points

Also Available:

Pompeii (out February 4th), Cate Le Bon’s sixth full-length studio album and the follow up to 2019’s Mercury-nominated Reward, bears a storied title summoning apocalypse, but the metaphor eclipses any “dissection of immediacy,” says Le Bon. Not to downplay her nod to disorientation induced by double catastrophe — global pandemic plus climate emergency’s colliding eco-traumas resonate all too eerily. “What would be your last gesture?” she asks. But just as Vesuvius remains active, Pompeii reaches past the current crises to tap into what Le Bon calls “an economy of time warp” where life roils, bubbles, wrinkles, melts, hardens, and reconfigures unpredictably.

Press Quotes:

Cate Le Bon Reward MEX250-1: Standard LP UPC: 184923125016 MEX250-2: CD UPC: 184923125023

Written primarily on bass and composed entirely alone in an “uninterrupted vacuum,” Le Bon plays every instrument (except drums and saxophones) and recorded the album largely by herself with long-term collaborator and co-producer Samur Khouja in Cardiff, Wales. One of Tim Presley’s painting hung on the studio wall as a meditative image for Le Bon and was reproduced as a portrait of her for the Pompeii album cover. Fist across the heart, stalwart and saintly: how to make “music that sounds like a painting?” Le Bon asked herself. Enter piles of Pompeii’s signature synths, basslines inspired by 1980s Japanese city pop, vocal arrangements that add memorable depth to the melodic fabric of each song, and long-term collaborator Stella Mozgawa’s “jazzthinking” percussion patched in from quarantined Australia. Bio The past few years have seen Le Bon emerge as a much lauded and sought-after collaborator, producing albums for contemporaries such as Deerhunter (Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?), John Grant (Boy from Michigan), and forthcoming albums from both Devendra Banhart and H. Hawkline. She’s not so much a gun for hire as a multi-faceted artist and producer who can both steer the ship and tap into a collective mindset; in 2019, she joined John Cale for a three-night live stretch in Paris, and 2021 will see a bass appearance on the track “If I Don’t Hear from You Tonight” from Courtney Barnett’s Things Take Time, Take Time. As Bradford Cox aptly notes about Le Bon, “there are artists who look inwards or outwards, and then there are the very rare ones who transcend either location.”

“Cate Le Bon’s new album Pompeii is knotty and ambitious, touching on societal decline and the impending threat of climate change. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun, and ‘Running [Away]’ is proof of that: building from an awkward groove into one of Le Bon’s most stylish, anthemic choruses, it’s a song for dancing as the world burns, laughing and crying at the same time.” - The FADER

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE TIME SKIFFS

OVERVIEW Over two decades have passed since Animal Collective accidentally began to reimagine the sound and image of what’s easiest here to call indie rock. From the start, they turned the ultimately rare trick of tucking inscrutable experiments into songs so infectious they became generational standards, empowering a new permissibility within a sometimesstodgy scene. They helped make the world safe for The Grateful Dead and tie-dye, or indie rock open to the Gamelan and Juju. Influences, they implicitly insisted, matter less than the music and spirit they inspire. Such paradigm-bending lessons are now simply part of the paradigm, philosophical cornerstones of modern music. Time Skiffs, the quartet’s first studio album in more than half a decade, feels like listening in on a conversation among four old friends, just as it felt during their inchoate early days or their Strawberry Jam heyday. These nine songs are love letters, distress signals, en plein air observations, and relaxation hymns, the collected transmissions of four people who have grown into relationships and parenthood and adult worry. But they are rendered with Animal Collective’s singular sense of exploratory wonder, same as they ever were. There are harmonies so rich you want to skydive through their shared air, textures so fascinating you want to decode their sorcery, rhythms so intricate you want to untangle their sources. Here is Animal Collective past 20, still in search of what’s next. It has been easy in these last two years to be more anxious than ever, to give yourself over to the sense that here we are at the end of days, every day. There are traces of that on Time Skiffs, moments of worry about the future we’re creating in the present or consternation with the moments we face now. There is sadness, turmoil, mourning. But there is mostly an undeniable joie de vivre to Time Skiffs, an excitement with love and life and nature and (sometimes) people. There are extended stargazing sessions, discursive country drives, contented creative nights, long-distance phone calls. There is gratitude and acceptance and exhilaration. “It’s really new every day,” goes one line that sticks out not as some overwrought thesis but as a genuine realization, an epiphany in real time. That is the prevailing sense of Time Skiffs—that, at our absolute best, we can be ever new, always in awe of what is yet to come.

Panthers prowling through a desert. Cowgirls swaggering into a saloon and kicking up dust. Riding shotgun with a Tarantino heroine. Having the fiesta of your lives under a giant piñata with all your friends. Los Bitchos’ hallucinatory surf-exotica is as evocative as it is playful: the London-based pan-continental group could well be your new favourite party band with their instrumental voyages that are the soundtrack to setting alight to a row of flaming sambucas and losing yourself to the night. They’ve got a bun-tight knack for a groove – and they’ve got the best fringes in rock’n’roll too. Serra Petale (guitar), Agustina Ruiz (keytar), Josefine Jonsson (bass) and Nic Crawshaw (drums) hail from different parts of the world but met via all-night house parties, or through friends, in London. Their unique sound binds them together, though, taking in a retrofuturistic blend of Peruvian chica, Argentine cumbia, Turkish psych and surf guitars. They are London’s answer to Khruangbin, if Khruangbin spent all weekend getting slammed on cheap tequila in a Dalston dive bar. 1970 was a time for heady experimentation in popular music, but very few records—and even fewer on major labels—come close to matching the stylistic ground covered by William S. Fischer’s album Circles. AfricanAmerican composer/arranger/keyboardist/ saxophonist Fischer grew up woodshedding with the likes of Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, and Percy Mayfield…and then took a sudden left turn by studying electronic music in Vienna during the mid‘60s. There, he met Joe Zawinul, and ended up penning five of the six tunes on Zawinul’s groundbreaking 1968 album The Rise and Fall of the Third Stream. Fischer went on to arrange for Herbie Mann, who signed him to his Embryo imprint for Atlantic Records; Circles was Fischer’s one and only release for the label. And he didn’t waste the opportunity; an utterly mindblowing mix of Sly Stone funk, heavy Hendrix-y metal, Southern soul, jazz fusion, and Stockhausen-esque explorations on the Moog synthesizer, Circles enlisted the same band (bassist Ron Carter, guitarists Eric Weissberg and Hugh McCracken) that Fischer had worked with while acting as Musical Director on Eugene McDaniels’ underground classic Outlaw, complemented by drummer Billy Cobham and a five-piece cello section. With a line-up like that, it’s little wonder that the artistic reach of Circles is breathtaking, but it somehow manages to cohere according to its own internal, crazy logic; it remains one of the most adventuresome and collectible releases of its day. For this, its first-ever vinyl reissue, we’ve pressed 2000 copies in “black ice” vinyl, preserved the original “circle” cut-out stencil cover, and added liner notes by Peter Relic that feature quotes from Fischer himself. For the intrepid listener!

This 1959 album doesn’t just include the greatest doo wop single of all time, “I Only Have Eyes for You;” it also stakes a fair claim to being the greatest doo wop ALBUM of all time. Flamingo Serenade brought End label producer George Goldner’s concept of having an R&B vocal group sing pop standards to its true apotheosis, as The Flamingos’ rich and intricate vocal harmonies lent ethereal textures to such chestnuts as “Begin the Beguine” and “Love Walked In.” And, of course, there’s “I Only Have Eyes for You,” one of the most mysterious and existential recordings ever committed to wax! The Flamingos recorded Flamingo Serenade in true stereo, and that’s the version we are bringing you in powder blue vinyl to match the tuxedos the group is wearing on the front cover. One of those rare albums that appeals to every generation.

Don Julian and the Larks SUPER SLICK

(BLUE VINYL EDITION) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 4, 2022 One of the holy grails of ‘70s soul-funk collectors finally gets a proper reissue (and yes, original copies of this 1974 release on the Money label will cost you a lot of, er, money)! Don Julian was a Los Angelesbased doo wopper who got his start leading The Meadowlarks, who recorded a number of sides for Dootone Records. The Meadowlarks then became The Larks, who, like so many other R&B groups of their era, achieved one hit wonder immortality with a dance craze song, 1964’s “The Jerk.” They spent the rest of the ’60s trying to recapture that magic with tracks like “Soul Jerk” and “The Penguin” (on Jerk Records, natch) before resurfacing with a couple of longplayers on the Money label. But this is where things get a little murky. The group also recorded a soundtrack for a long-rumored, never seen blaxploitation film called Shorty the Pimp (supposedly Quentin Tarantino has the only copy). In 1998, Ace Records assembled tracks from the Shorty the Pimp score on a CD release, but while seven of the ten tracks on Super Slick appear on that collection, many of them differ markedly from their soundtrack incarnations. So, the how, when, and where of this recording remain very much a mystery. But no matter; with its blend of Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”-era Temptations, and ‘70s sweet soul (e. g a cover of David Gates & Bread’s “Make It with You”), Super Slick wears its influences very much on its sleeve while transcending them with soaring, falsetto-filigreed harmonies, percolating bass, and note-perfect arrangements. Trivia note: that’s Richard Berry of “Louie Louie” fame doing the deep-voiced spoken word parts on “Super Slick” and “Shorty the Pimp.” We’re pressing this in blue vinyl to match the album cover…this is a reissue that’s been a long time comin’!

Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes’ groundbreaking albums for Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman label don’t get the attention from jazz fans that they should. In fact, among the many distinguished alumni of Miles Davis’ fusion bands, keyboardist Smith and his cohorts arguably ran with Davis’ stylistic breakthrough the farthest. In five albums stretching over four years, Smith and the Cosmic Echoes stretched the fusion aesthetic to embrace post-bop modal and spiritual jazz, funk, rock, pop, and even the smooth jazz, quiet storm, and crossover genres. And if those latter styles raise your traditionalist hackles, Smith imbued all of his records with integrity, vision, and his unique spacy sensibiity; instead of playing it safe or commercial, he fearlessly paved a path for modern jazz musicians to follow (Kamasi Washington, for one, no doubt listened to these records at length). Real Gone Music is proud to present Lonnie Liston Smith’s first two records as a bandleader inside their respective original gatefold jacket artwork… soulful, spiritual, life-enhancing music! Such a multifaceted ensemble was perfectly suited to explore the spiritual jazz that Smith had encountered while playing with Pharoah Sanders (“Let Us Go into the House of the Lord” appears here and on Sanders’ 1970 album Summun Bukmun Umyun which featured Smith), all presided over by Flying Dutchman label owner and former John Coltrane producer Bob Thiele. We’ve re-created the original gatefold artwork with Nat Hentoff’s liner notes…one of the great jazz albums of its era!

jazz, spiritual jazz, fusion, and post-bop subgenres, 1974’s Cosmic Funk headed, as

THE 5TH DIMENSION

THE COMPLETE SOUL CITY/BELL SINGLES 1966-1975 (3-CD SET) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 4, 2022 Get ready for a case of champagne…champagne soul, that is! Back in 1966, Billy Davis, Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson first started making beautiful music together, and the world of pop music has never been the same. Now, Real Gone Music is proud to present the most comprehensive 5th Dimension collection ever compiled, a 3-CD set containing their complete singles for the Soul City and Bell labels (plus their first single on the Bronco label as The Versatiles and their lone single release for Arista), 61 tracks of swinging, soulful harmonies, brilliant arrangements, groundbreaking production, and some of the best songwriting to come out of the ‘60s and ‘70s. This 3-CD set—which is housed inside a sumptuous, 8-panel digipak mini-album featuring rare photos—not only includes 30 Pop and 15 R&B hits, all in their hard-to-find, mono mixes (only the last four tracks on the set are in stereo), featuring such legendary recordings as “Up—Up and Away,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “(Last Night) I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All,” and “If I Could Reach You,” but also some rare, non-LP single sides and single edits, nearly all making their CD debuts here! With production by the great Bones Howe, vocal arrangements by Bob Alcivar, and the instrumental accompaniment of the famed Wrecking Crew, the confluence of talent on these sides is simply staggering. And, of course, The 5th Dimension brought the songwriting genius of Laura Nyro and Jimmy Webb to the masses; their collaborations with Webb in particular remain among the pinnacles of ‘60s pop. Remastered by Mark Wilder at Battery Studios, and with notes by Paul Grein featuring quotes from all four living members (Billy Davis, Jr., Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue and Lamonte McLemore) that trace the historic arc of the group, The Complete Soul City/Bell Singles 1966-1975 isn’t just the definitive look at The 5th Dimension; it’s a collection that defines the whole sunshine pop genre. And anybody who caught the group’s amazing performance in Questlove’s recent documentary Summer of Soul will not want to miss this! CD ONE

Bitchcraft was born in a move from New York City, where Bitch had lived for 15 years, to a log cabin in the woods. There was all the time in the world to make art, and it was there, in the cabin, that Bitch began to write some of the songs that would appear on Bitchcraft. “It gave me space to think about the biggest version of myself that I could be,” she says of those early days in the cabin. The songs she wrote were a departure from anything she’d ever written before, and she began to craft huge pop tracks with the help of her trusty violin. Then, she moved to LA and Bitchcraft began to shapeshift again. In the time that followed, Bitch assembled a coven to complete it. She called on Anne Preven (Beyonce, Madonna, Demi Lovato) and God-des who helped her crystalize her vision in terms of writing and production. She called on Roma Baran (Laurie Anderson) to produce the violins on “Polar Bear.” She called on Melissa York (Team Dresch, The Butchies) and Faith Soloway (Transparent) to co-write a couple of the songs. The resulting record is one that is full of glorious pop tracks that go in unexpected directions. Just take opener “You’re the Man,” as one such offering. Here, a strident synthesizer crashes into a drum machine, and Bitch sings about owning your own power. The song started as a poem, one that Bitch first wrote as part of a New Year’s ritual with Ferron where she wrote about things she wanted to let go of and ripped them from her notebook and threw them into the fire. Meanwhile, on “Hello Meadow,” electric violins coalesce with birdlike synths, and Bitch recounts industrial capitalist hell, and the attempts to find beauty outside of it. It’s a song about mother nature as well as the onslaught of capitalism and its obsession with destroying the natural world. And on “Easy Target,” written during the Bret Kavanaugh trials, she explores what it means to find your sense of self worth when people try to bring you down. Bitchcraft is like Joni Mitchell set to a click track, it’s queer Cyndi Lauper. It’s neon pink, in your face, ready to hex you with its brilliance. It’s an unbelievably fun record that is extremely capable of breaking your heart a little bit. It also makes you think: about the state of the world, about evil politicians, about what it means to exist as a woman, and how to find joy along the way.

RIYL: The Television Personalities, The Smiths, House of Love, Unrest, Galaxie 500, Blueboy, East River Pipe, Fred Thomas, Devon Williams.

CD & Digital Street Date: February 4, 2022 Single LP and Limited Double LP Street Date: May 13, 2022 Summer at Land’s End is the 4th LP from The Reds, Pinks & Purples, Glenn Donaldson’s solo kitchen pop “band.” Since 2019 The Reds, Pinks & Purples has built an obsessive, evergrowing following by combining a traditional vinyl-oriented release schedule with monthly drops of new songs on Bandcamp and live streams on Instagram. 2021’s Uncommon Weather was something of a breakthrough, getting national radio airplay and even reaching #7 in the UK indie album breakers chart. Hitting a wildly prolific phase, Donaldson is back in less than a year with the brilliantly ambitious “Summer At Land’s End.”

Like the blossoming flower-themed sleeve might imply, it’s bursting with heart-ripped-open vocals, ringing guitars, and warm reverberations. There are still plenty of concise indie-pop songs, but the album expands on the formula of the first three LPs into hazier acoustic sounds and some extended mood pieces. You might hear ‘80s and ‘90s influences in the echoing guitars, Creation, Teenbeat, 4AD, or even the radio pop of your youth, but more so, you might hear melodies and words that resonate someplace deep down as you journey through “Land's End” and move the needle back to the beginning again. LP • 702224130210 CD • 702224130227 Violet Opposition is the latest album from Brock Van Wey's ever-prolific bvdub long-form ambient project. With Violet Opposition, Van Wey floats the project into murkier waters by adding a layer of overdriven gilding to his trademark sound. This sound is a texturally fibrous take on ambient that Brock has been experimenting with recently. As a result, the bvdub peaks and valleys you know, and love, are even more arresting with the added grit and brume. Violet Opposition is four achingly impelling tracks smeared across a double LP in violet and yellow swirl, each song taking its time to evolve and cradle you in sinewy tones. Violet Opposition is out on February 4th. The double LP is limited to 500 units worldwide.

SCHOOLKIDSRECORDS.COM/LABEL schoolkidsrecordsnc@gmail.com

It’s a rock and roll record. I’m categorized as Americana because this business loves putting labels on people. Yes, there’s a couple of country-ish songs on it, I do live in Nashville, and my southern accent is what it is, but I had an epiphany one day. I realized, hey, I hate dobros. And if I hear another song about a train in the key of G, somebody’s gonna get hurt. I realized I’m 58 years old, I’ve survived a horrendous car crash, I’ve had cancer three times, and this might be my final shot – so I wanted to go back to my first love while there’s still time. I went into the studio with Jonathan Bright (Raelyn Nelson Band). He played drums and I played the guitars and the bass. This time I declared that there would be none of my skilled session friends on the record. They’re all great players, but I didn’t want great. I wanted ME. Who ME is can be summed up by saying I’m a songwriter and an author. I’ve won the “Best Song” award in the Nashville Scene Critics Poll twice. My three books (including Cheese Chronicles, which I’ve been told is a cult classic) have four and five-star reader ratings on Amazon. I’ve written songs for Todd Snider, Jimmy Buffett, Jason & the Scorchers, Dan Baird and others. I played in Government Cheese from ’85 to ’92. I played in the bis-quits (with Will Kimbrough) from ’92 to ’94, and we had the honor of making a record for John Prine’s label. I’ve made eight solo albums since then (counting this new one) and I’ve made three albums with a side project band called Daddy (again with Will Kimbrough). I’m 5’10”, I like Ray Davies, Bob Dylan and Randy Newman, I’ve been married 29 years (to the same woman, no less), Tourette’s makes me blink my eyes a lot, and I pulled my face out of a bottle nine years ago. I’m crazy (so people tell me) and my crazy self is what I write about, I write funny songs about fears (if you like what I think is funny), I write sad songs about fears, and sometimes those tunes are funny and sad at the same time. If I have any mission at all as a songwriter, some higher purpose, it’s that I seek to make other messed-up people feel less alone – the end result of that being that while I’m not everybody’s cup of tea, the people who like me tend to really really like me. The songs? My new one starts off with “Pay it Forward”. It’s about perseverance in a world that wants to conquer you with apathy. “A Little Bit of Sex Part 2” is about the joys of post-cancer libido loss and finally the heat’s off. (I’m serious.) “I Got No Place to Go” and “You Don’t Get Over Love” are both about lost love. “Job Hunting While Depressed” is self-explanatory. “I Thought I Was Fine” is about my waking up the morning after a good gig, checking my email and finding out it wasn’t a great gig after all. (Thank God my drinking days are over.) “I Do” is about being on the road and missing your wife. “It’s All About Me” is about a narcissist in love, if such a thing can happen. “I Wish I’d Known You Better”, the only ballad on the album, is a salute to my late older brother. The record has two covers: “That Lucky Old Sun” and Cole Porter’s “Miss Otis Regrets.” I’ve never heard those songs done as rock songs before and they’re now two of my favorite tracks on the record. Oh… what else is on the record? I think that’s it. Listen, if you write about me, or have me on your radio show, or invite me over to your house for a cup of coffee, that would be fantastic, and I’d be much obliged. But hey, in a hundred years we’re all dust. What matters most is my family and my friends. I’ve been broke all my adult life, but when it comes to friends I’m a millionaire. I’ll walk into Dee’s of the 5-Spot and wind up hugging a half-dozen people. THAT’S what’s important, I reckon. Shattering your pelvis and several ribs in a car wreck and then having to beat back cancer three times will teach you to appreciate what you’ve got. If you’ve read this all the way to the bottom, I appreciate it. You know, maybe I’ll turn out in my dotage to be some revisionist hero for college listeners, like Mississippi John Hurt of something; then again, maybe I’ll flap my arms and fly to the moon. Have a nice day and God Bless. Tommy July 16th, 2021

JOE HARRIS, AKE PERSSON & BENNY BAILEY - Quincy, here we come A classic session that took place 1959 in Stockholm featuring internaonal stars Joe Harris and Benny Bailey. Together with a troop of legendary swedish jazzers from this era they recorded this album which in many ways is a tribute to the songwring skills of master Quincy Jones. Apart från Ake Persson, muisicians like Arne Domnerus, Bigi Lund, Lennart Jansson and a handful of others are making this to a true gem.

JAN JOHANSSON & ARNE DOMNERUS - Younger than springme 1959-1961 The pianist Jan Johansson’s revoluonary jazz treatments of tradional Swedish folk songs were a few years away, and he had yet to experiment with modal playing and avant-garde jazz. At this point, he was sll playing mostly hard bop, which is the style that dominates here. It gets off to an impressive start with four recordings from Johansson’s first session with alto saxophonist Arne Domnerus in 1959. Aer that, Johansson is heard as a trio pianist in 1959 and 1960. The Swede’s expressive pianism demonstrates that while Bud Powell had been a big influence on him, he was quite willing to incorporate the ideas of others who came along, ranged from Bill Evans to Red Garland. Like Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Johansson was far from complacent; he believed in challenging himself and connuing to forge ahead. CD # CDDRA186

BARRY CLEVELAND “STONES OF PRECIOUS WATER” RELEASE DATE: February October 16, 2020 4, 2022 Stones of Precious Water is a revelatory collection of mostly improvised songs that maps its way through textural fourth-world ambience, shimmering New Age, gently propulsive kosmiche, and jazz-inflected prog. These sounds are sewn together with a deftness of performance and sonic character which reveals them as branches of the same tree, or perhaps more appropriately, a handful of glittering stones. Making his first forays into multi-track recording, Cleveland used a basic Teac 4-track cassette recorder, and this rudimentary piece of equipment proved to be a useful tool for compositional exploration. By flipping and reversing the tape, slowing the pitch, and altering and layering different performances, Cleveland stretched the sound of his guitar across the expanse of the tonal canvas. HIGHLIGHTS: Six of the ten tracks contain contributions from Kat Epple and her late husband Bob Stohl (a.k.a the epoch-defining New Age duo, Emerald Web.) The first vinyl pressing ever of Stones of Precious Water. The original release was on cassette in 1986.

Band: Arabs In Aspic Title: ”Far Out in Aradabia” Label: Karisma Records Catalogue no: KAR202CD Barcode: 7090008312024 Format: CD

Tracklist:

1. Arabs in Aspic II 2. Seventytwo / Hair of the Sun 3. Siseneg 4. Talking Mushroom 5. Come to Me 6. Butterpriest Jam

Hailing from Trondheim in Norway, Arabs in Aspic has been mid-Norway’s flagship of 70s inspired progressive rock and proto-hardrock for the past 15 years. They’ve been described as a sweet mixture of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies. The second release from Arabs in Aspic was “Far Out in Aradabia”, which was released in 2004 on CD only. In their humble start, the band can be described as a mixture of the psychedelic space rock akin to Hawkwind and the heaviness and darkness of early Black Sabbath. However, the song writing was beginning to become bolder and more adventurous, and they even enlisted a keyboard player. The musical inspirations became broader as well, and here they really started venturing into the land of progressive rock. The last track was a studio jam where they played for 65 minutes and edited it down to 19 mintues. This was also the first album they used Julia Proszowzka to do the artwork, who they’ve worked with ever since. The band played a lot of concerts after the album, but with some complications during the writing and recording, the band dissolved in 2006. Now, only Jostein Smeby and Eskil Nyhus are left of the original line-up, and Tommy Ingebrigtsen and Terje Nyhus has recently started The Flying Norsemen, an Arabs in Aspic tribute band. “Far Out in Progeria” has been re-mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo. This one has been out of print for a long time, and finally here’s a proper re-release. Enjoy! Spoon’s tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, is alive, vital and inarguably the band’s heaviest work to date. It’s a rock ’n roll record. Texasmade. The first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown, Austin, in more than a decade. Written and recorded over the last two years – both in and out of shutdown – these songs feel like a culmination of Spoon’s career while marking a shift toward something louder, wilder, and more vivid. From the detuned guitars anchoring “The Hardest Cut” to the sax-laden surrealism of the introspective title track, Lucifer on the Sofa bottles the physical thrill of a band tearing up a packed room.

“One of the things that bonds us together as a band is pure magic. I think we all have the same guide and none of us have ever spoken what it is because we couldn’t name it, but somehow, we are all going for the same thing, and when we hit it… we all know it’s it, but none of us to this day, or maybe ever, will be able to articulate in words what the ‘it’ is. Something about it is magic to me.” - Adrianne Lenker Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You is a sprawling double-LP exploring the deepest elements and possibilities of Big Thief. To truly dig into all that the music of Adrianne Lenker, Max Oleartchick, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia desired in 2020, the band decided to write and record a rambling account of growth as individuals, musicians, and chosen family over four distinct recording sessions. In Upstate New York, Topanga Canyon, The Rocky Mountains, and Tucson, Arizona, Big Thief spent five months in creation and came out with 45 completed songs. The most resonant of this material was edited down into the 20 tracks that make up Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You , a fluid and adventurous listen. The album was produced by drummer James Krivchenia who initially pitched the recording concept for Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You back in late 2019 with the goal of encapsulating the many different aspects of Adrianne’s songwriting and the band onto a single record.

JON HOPKINS

MUSIC FOR PSYCHEDELIC THERAPY OVERVIEW Domino are proud to present Music For Psychedelic Therapy, the new album from Jon Hopkins.

"Immunity and Singularity were sister albums. I feel I explored that sound as much as I could. Next, I wanted to make something that faced the opposite direction, something far away from a cosmic party or a set of festival bangers. Something looking inwards, something egoless, with no attempts made to "fit in”. Something made with total, raw honesty. It felt like time for a reset, to wait for music to appear from a different place. That place ended up being a cave in Ecuador, where I went on a life-changing creative expedition in 2018.

What grew from this experience is an album with no beats, not one drum sound, something that is closer to a classical symphony than a dance / electronica record. Something that is more like having an experience than listening to a piece of music. Maybe something far more emotionally honest than I had been comfortable making before - a merging of music, nature and my own desire to heal. The freedom from traditional rhythmic structures unlocked so much - it felt like I was free to explore a new form of rhythm, one that you discover when you just allow things to flow without letting yourself get in the way. This feels like the album I have spent my whole life making, and simultaneously like it just appeared out of nowhere. The bulk of it was recorded in something of a trance between January and May 2021, through the darkest winter I can remember. It brought me light and purpose, and seemed to flow through me without obstruction, in a way I have never experienced before." Music For Psychedelic Therapy is not ambient, classical or drone but has elements of all three. For me it’s a place as much as it is a sound. It works for the sober mind, but it takes on a new dimension entirely when brought into a psychedelic ceremony. In my own psychedelic explorations testing this music, I found a quote I had read would keep coming to mind. “Music is liquid architecture, architecture is frozen music”. I love this idea of music as something you inhabit, something that works on you energetically. In fact, it was while in that state that the title appeared to me. Psychedelic-assisted therapies are moving into legality across the world, and yet it feels like no one is talking about the music. but the music is as important as the medicine. “Ayahuasca is driven by sound, by song, by whistling. And its ability to transform sound, including vocal sound, into the visual spectrum indicates that some kind of information processing membrane or boundary is being overcome by the pharmacology of this stuff. And things normally experienced as acoustic become visibly beheld, and it's quite spectacular.” Terence McKenna

Music For Psychedelic Therapy sounds best played in one sitting, lying down in the dark.

VINYL 12”: ZIQ445. BARCODE: 5055869566087. BOX COUNT 25. 3MM SPINE Jlin's new EP "Embryo" marks a key point in the multi-platform artistic growth of the Indiana-based producer. The title track "Embryo" features a bold and fiery sound palette recalling the futurism of nineties Detroit techno and British IDM without succumbing to their cliches. The track was written for the Chicago-based new music ensemble Third Coast Percussion who are set to release their version of the composition on Cedille Records in May 2022. The bumping "Auto Pilot" takes her mutant techno stance even further. With faint echoes of classic Model 500, it sounds like music for automated cars, robot cop junctions and virtual freeways in the air. A fifth wave techno? "Connect The Dots" is one of the standouts from her recent lives sets, with the kind of rhythmic complexity only Jlin can bring, underpinned by a glitch reborn and transmuted into something utterly of the here and now. Its final segment will catch listeners by surprise with it's changing time signatures effortlessly rendered. Looking back on the new EP Jlin comments "I was just writing trying to get out of my own head. I wrote all these pieces in between commissions and trying to stay afloat mentally." She singles out final track "Rabbit Hole" as a highlight for her - describing it as "a track I truly enjoyed making. It made me feel nostalgia yet connected me to my own evolution." "Rabbit Hole" is the most laidback track on the EP. Its sound palette is one people know her for but the delivery is like a new kind of supercomputer live rendering of a panoramic widescreen landscape of pluto.

The new EP is of course only one aspect of her ever-prolific continued growth and despite lockdown she managed to record a live set for The Met museum in New York earlier this year. She's also undertaken remixes for Jazz musician Steve Lehman, Depeche Mode's Martin Gore, rising star Marie Davidson and violinist Galya Bisengalieva amongst others. She also created a remix of Beethoven for BBC Radio 6 as well as being commissioned by the Kronos Quartet to create a composition for their '50 For the Future' series. In addition, this past August, New York based dance company A.I.M by Kyle Abraham revealed a new work “Requiem: Fire in the Air of the Earth” featuring her music. Jlin is currently working on a new full length album for Planet Mu.

His fourth album, Electric Cowboy: Born in Carolina Mud, is caked in Genre: Funk, Soul, Alternative

the soil where he grew up, mired in the muck of this place—not stuck but freed. Grounded in personal experience and haunted by personal demons, Electric Cowboy is an album that reaches out, that embraces the world, that mixes the confessional and the communal. But the dominant sound—the dominant mindset—is funk: gritty, warm, weird, charismatic. Rashad once again composed and recorded with Blake Rhein, guitarist for Durand Jones & the Indications, after they had worked so well together on 2020’s Brother! EP. They corralled an all-star team that included Adrian Quesada from the Grammy-nominated neo-soul act Black Pumas and Colin Croom from the Chicago indie-rock outfit Twin Peaks. “On Electric Cowboy I wanted to make some modern funk that the kids would enjoy, but still have some soul elements and some punk elements. On the cover you see a black man on a horse running away from his demons. That’s me. You can hear it all in the songs – struggling with demons and still coming out on top of it all. That’s what funk is! You got some heavy, dark shit, but you also got some joyful compositions, funky basslines, dope harmonies, infectious hooks. So that’s me on the cover, the Electric Cowboy, slaying anything that comes in my path. I gotta keep riding, keep trucking, keep fighting, keep pushing.”

Soul Jazz Records Presents

LIFE BETWEEN ISLANDS Soundsystem Culture: Black Musical Expression in the UK 1973-2006 th

11 February 2022 Soul Jazz Records new ‘Life Between Islands’ collection is inspired by the launch of Tate Britain’s exhibition of the same name. This landmark exhibition explores the links between Caribbean and British art and culture from the 1950s to now. Life Between Islands: Caribbean-British Art 1950s-Now is at Tate Britain 1 Dec 2021 until 3 April 2022.

Soul Jazz Records album, sub-titled “Soundsystem Culture – Black Musical Expression 1973-2006,” focuses on the most important Black British musical styles to emerge out of the distinctly Caribbean world of sound systems. The album features an all-star line-up including Dennis Bovell, Shut Up and Dance, Cymande, Digital Mystikz, Brown Sugar, Funk Masters, Janet Kay, Ragga Twins and more. The album is a lightning-rod journey across Roots Reggae, Jungle/Drum & Bass, Jazz-Funk, Lovers Rock, Jazz, Dubstep and more. Much of Soul Jazz Records’ catalogue comes out of these genres and this album is partly an overview of some of Soul Jazz’s earlier releases (including Digital Mystikz’ long-deleted groundbreaking and now highly-collectible single, ‘Misty Winter’) alongside some choice rare and classic tunes that span over 30 years of sound system culture. Many of the tracks represent how Black British artists defined their own identity with songs such as Brown Sugar’s righteous ‘Black Pride’, ‘I’m In Love with A Dreadlocks’ and Tabby Cat Kelly’s powerful ‘Don’t Call Us Immigrants’. Aside from being musically rooted in the distinctly Jamaican-born phenomenon of the sound system, much of this identity is also shaped by the triangular relationship of being British-born, of Caribbean heritage, and with an equal love of African-American Jazz, Funk and Soul, as evidenced with many Lovers Rock tunes reggae covers of American soul tunes (such as those of Jean Carn, William de Vaughan and Rose Royce featured here). This stateside influence can also be heard in groups such as the Funk Masters, a group formed by reggae radio DJ Tony Williams, whose jazz-funk music successfully crossed over into New York’s clubland, as well as the great Cymande, whose unique street-funk became staple material for numerous US hip-hop artists in the years that followed. In the early 1990s, jungle and drum and bass artists took the essence of reggae’s soundsystem culture – MCs, dubplates, crews – and applied them to their own music, applying heavy reggae bass lines to intense double-speed drum breakbeats. At the forefront of this new movement were the duo Shut Up and Dance, working closely with The Ragga Twins, aka Deman Rocker and Flinty Badman, both MCs for North London’s infamous Unity reggae soundsytem. In the early 2000s, dubstep, spearheaded by Digital Mystikz, became the latest instalment in this ever-evolving soundsystem culture. Soul Jazz Records’ ‘Life Between Islands’ shows how these many styles are interconnected. The album comes as a heavyweight triple vinyl (+ download), deluxe double CD with slipcase and digital release. Lloyd Bradley (author of the classic book on reggae ‘Bass Culture’, and ‘Sounds Like London’), provides the excellent sleevenotes, which are also accompanied with exclusive and striking photography. th

"There is probably no better or more appropriate way to celebrate the Tate Britain’s exhibition, Between the Islands: Caribbean-British Art 1950s – Now, than with an accompanying compilation album. As with the art itself, music has all the possibilities to reflect its surroundings through an array of lenses limited only by the creator’s imagination. Hence this astutely conceived and compiled soundtrack is as beautiful and as varied as the art itself, offering stories of immigration and settlement that can exist without filters or outside interference, providing a vivid snapshot of one of the cornerstones of black British culture.” Lloyd Bradley

Initially he supported himself with street busking and preaching, although his fortunes changed with the birth of Greenwich Village Folk scene. Reverend Gary quickly become a mentor to a long list of well known musicians from Dave Van Ronk to Bob Dylan. For the next two decades, a series of guitarists beat a path to his door, to study the blues and to occasionally hear a little sermon. Davis’ compositions have been covered by The Grateful Dead (“Samson & Delilah,” “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”), The Rolling Stones (“You Got to Move”), Peter Paul and Mary and Dylan (“Baby, Let Me Follow You Down”). The songs on this disc consist of two previously unreleased live recordings and capture the best of the Davis catalog.

From Little Earl, the tale of two brothers leaving a convenience store after a shop-lifting gone wrong incident outside of Lake Charles, to Drowning in Plain Sight, about a middle-aged woman driving aimlessly outside of Galveston unable to go home to her waiting family or All Along The Ride the heartbreaking tale of a couple’s relationship disintegrating along a drive back from Corpus Christi. There’s the cinematic Surfer’s in Twilight, the tale a woman leaving work to find her boyfriend arrested on a seaside boardwalk to the 60’s pop of Kid Codeine and the soul romance of Hold Me Slow. There’s the pull of the dream of the never ending New Orleans night in Past the Shadows and the edge of your seat domestic drama of This Ain’t No Getaway, where a woman gets her last things from an abusive boyfriend’s apartment finally declaring, “Even if the police are called, I’m gonna leave not escape….Because this ain’t no getaway.” The Delines are led by vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations TX), keyboardist and trumpeter Cory Gray, as well as Sean Oldham, Freddie Trujillo, and Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine). Vlautin is no stranger to critical acclaim in the US, UK, and Europe, enjoying cult success and rave reviews from the likes of the New York Times, Uncut, Hot Press, and Q Magazine both as a novelist and as the front man of alt-country outfit Richmond Fontaine.

“Vlautin is one of pop’s outstanding storytellers… No one has a better eye for the telling detail, or a keener ear for the heartbreaking phrase… Frontwoman Amy Boone’s voice is equal parts double cream and liquid smoke.” Metro – 4 Stars

“Majestic… Boone’s smoky vocals fit the desperation of Vlautin’s mini–dramas perfectly, the band’s country–soul swing evocatively solid.” Q – 4 Stars

SADDLE CREEK DOCUMENT SERIES DOCUMENT 017: Lonely Pirate Committee - He Was in the Father b/w ODE

Artist: Lonely Pirate Committee Title: He Was in the Father b/w ODE Catalog #: LBJ-336 Formats: 7" Street Date: February 11, 2022 Box Lot Quantity: 72 Genre: Alternative PRESS PROMOTION press@saddle-creek.com RADIO PROMOTION College, Commercial & Specialty radio@saddle-creek.com

In an age of never-ending genre caveats, there’s something refreshing in a band simply referring to themselves as a rock band, plain and simple. Lonely Pirate Committee define themselves in such a way, and while their music encompasses a number of different strands and influences, they like the openness of that descriptor, the space it leaves for exploration and experimentation. Moving through various iterations over the years, Lonely Pirate Committee remains in 2021 as the musical project of childhood friends Pearce Gronek and Fletcher Barton. Together, the pair has guided the band’s studio work, before bringing varying members to flesh out LPC’s high-volume and high-intensity live performances that juxtapose the more mellow and laid-back sound that mostly defines their recordings to date, save for the band’s occasional moments of skewed eccentricity. Formed in Cleveland, the pair work both together and apart, splitting the band’s songwriting down the middle, working on their ideas at home before bringing them together under one defined vision. In early 2020 LPC released their second album, Everyday Ordinary, and it showcased a more refined version of the band than what had come before, the pair’s songwriting drifting into creative and hazy new textures across the album’s ten songs. In early 2022, Lonely Pirate Committee release their first new work since those album sessions in the form of a brand new 7” single for Saddle Creek’s Document series. Formed of two new tracks, both recorded in late 2020, the release is led by “He Was in the Father”, a song which should be seen as a caricature of Middle-American suburbia; a white picket fence daydream through a shadowy lens. The track began simply as a sonic experiment but soon evolved into the full song we hear today – albeit one shaped by AI. “The track is partially written using AI music generation technology, in direct collaboration with the human composer,” the band explain. "We recorded a brief performance of banjo and guitar, then fed it into an AI algorithm that then attempted to continue the recording. This resulted in the outro sequence of the song.”

It’s backed by “ODE”, a surreal and somewhat twisted celebration of the American dream. "It went through many iterations over the year and was almost scrapped multiple times,” the band say of the track. “The chaotic, bouncy harmony drove us both to the brink of insanity during the recording process, but ultimately led to further sonic exploration.”

Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. Each release featured in the Document Series is comprised of an exclusive record featuring unreleased music from artists outside of the label's roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist.

Stander is the trio of guitarist Mike Boyd, bassist Derek Shlepr, and drummer Stephen Waller. Rooted in both heavy music and Chicago’s flourishing experimental and improvisational community, and following in the tradition of midwestern boundary pushers before them (Tortoise, Pelican, Russian Circles), Stander defies categorization and deftly draws from disparate influences to create a sound that is their own.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX HAUSUMOUNTAIN @GMAIL.COM

NYC-based trio Kill Alters returns to Hausu Mountain with Armed to the Teeth L.M.O.M.M., their rst full-length album following EPs and tapes including No Self Helps (HAUSMO61, 2017) and Kill Alters (2015). Taking up residence at the intersection of electronics-infused rock, digital hardcore, freewheeling mutant noise experimentation, and incidental found sound culled from bandleader and composer Bonnie Baxter’s decades-old family recordings, the album presents the band’s most intricate and mind-shattering music to date. As in all of their releases, the incorporation of Baxter’s mother’s voice from the tapes in her personal archives serves as a central element of Kill Alters' compositions, imbuing their music with added layers of personality and emotional memory, weaving together a story of early childhood nostalgia laced with catharsis and redemption. Primary composer and producer Bonnie Baxter leads the band with her impassioned vocal performances, pummeling drum machine beats, and peals of chaotic synthesis. In addition to Kill Alters, Baxter’s releases in the Hausu Mountain catalog include the solo albums AXIS (HAUSMO95, 2019) and Ask Me How Satan Started (HAUSMO82, 2018). With Machine Girl mastermind Matt Stephenson, she forms the duo Prolaps, whose output includes Pure Mud: Volume 7 (HAUSMO105, 2020) and the massive four-volume, eight-hour Ultra Cycle series (HAUSMO116-119, 2021). In Kill Alters, Nicos Kennedy serves as the project’s co-producer/mixer, sound engineer, and synthesist, both shaping their sound in the context of performance and rendering their nal recorded output in all its overloaded detail. Hisham Bharoocha (formerly of seminal US underground projects Black Dice and Lightning Bolt, a collaborator within the extended Boredoms universe, and a solo artist under Artist: the Soft Circle moniker) provides his signature battering ram drum Album: performances, which collide with electronic percussion elements to animate the Label: Hausu Mountain Cat #: HAUSMO125 band’s ballistic compositions both on record and in the context of their live Format: CD, Cassette Releases: Feb. 11, 2022 shows.
