Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Slim Moon at Kill Rock Stars How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? My goals have changed a bit with experience but they are mostly the same - help great artists realize their vision and reach their audience and make a living from their music, and also to cause some great records to exist that might otherwise have never happened. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? I think Bikini Kill’s Pussywhipped is the greatest punk rock album ever. If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? Have the band stay where they are, playing music every day, and get all the fans to travel to them. This would include taking over the local store and stocking nothing but that band’s music all year, so the pilgrims would leave with a big stack of music and merch.

How did you personally get started in the music industry? Depends on what counts as “music industry.” I started my first band while I was homeless and sleeping on couches in Seattle as a teenager. I first started putting on shows and releasing cassettes in Olympia, at the urging of Lois (Courtney Love, Lois, Owl and the Pussycat, Lois Maffeo and Brendan Canty) Maffeo. When and where did the label begin? I started the label in February of 1991 with the intention of putting out spoken word seven-inches. The first one was called Wordcore Volume 1 and featured me on one side and Kathleen Hanna on the other side. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? I named it after a painting I had made, but yeah it was meant to be a statement of intent. Dismantle major labels! No more MTV! Corporate rock still sucks! How has the label changed since it started? The first big change was the decision to start releasing music and not just spoken word. We grew a lot and started another label (5RC) but I left after 15 years Portia Sabin then ran it for 13 years until I returned. The flavor was similar but different during her time. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Right now there are 3 of us in house and also an independent contractor we think of as part of the team. Sydney does social media and publicity; Adam does digital marketing and some video stuff; Rob is the GM/VP and does basically everything, with a heavy influence on art, design, and product management. I do the “A&R” and try not to have a supervisor style that holds people back, with mixed success. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Well it’s a pretty basic obvious answer, but we tend to work with artists who play great live shows, so the lack of live shows has been different and kinda tough. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? We’ve released music from all over North America as well as about a dozen other countries, but we have a special relationship with Portland Oregon and the Pacific Northwest in general. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? I do listen to and sign bands from unsolicited demos quite often. I also get a lot of great tips from bands already on the label. Every once in a while we’ve discovered an artist by just stumbling into a show and being blown away. Super impressed by Sunny War right now. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Ideologically, we think of ourselves as a punk label. Musically we cover several genres but our biggest successes have been in the “indie rock” category.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I was not that big into the physical experience or “fancy” cover art in the 90s but I’ve come around and now really believe in making vinyl special in ways that delights the fans. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We never stopped making CDs. We have made some special cassette collections. Look for more in the future, and maybe 8-track and reel-to-reel. How would you describe the average fan of the label? I think we have a few different pockets of fans. A 40-something who loved Sleater-Kinney and Elliott Smith in the 90s and has kept up on good music, or a 20-something who loves great new bands and also loves our history as a label. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? It is common for the weird kid in the scene who dressed flamboyantly and does spoken word and isn’t afraid to make a fool of themselves in front of people to get asked to sing in bands, and that happened to me a few times (Eights and Aces, Nisqually Delta Podunk Nightmare, Lush, No Reason) before I started creating my own projects (Witchypoo, slimmoonSolo, Slim Moon and What Army) In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Environmental sustainability should rightfully be the #1 concern of everyone in the world right now. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? The way people discover new music. In my time it was looking for clues within limited resources and opportunities - listening to college radio after midnight, trying to get to the record store before the newest issue of that zine from London you love sells out, standing outside of 21+ shows to listen through the doors. Now it is more a winnowing down to find the golden within an avalanche of sounds, too much to choose from. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Kill Rock Stars Nashville, and it would put out stuff that has one foot in a more “rootsy” American tradition, whether that be expressed as country, bluegrass, Americana, etc. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Fallout in Seattle in the 80s was the place that helped me become me. Bruce Pavitt sold me my first indie label record from an American label - Our Secret/ What’s Important by Beat Happening. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? We cared more about people than music, and more about music than money.

THE HOLIDAY SOUNDS OF JOSH ROUSE AVAILABLE NOW!

10% OFF CD - 10% OFF LP First Edition CD and LP feature bonus disk with three holiday classics, including a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas,” + three demo versions of album tracks

LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL Josh Rouse never planned on making a holiday record. “I was never a holiday record kind of guy,” he laughs. “Growing up, I remember hearing Vince Guaraldi and Bing Crosby and all the staples everybody listens to each winter, but I never collected Christmas music or anything like that.” It makes sense, then, that ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ isn’t your typical yuletide collection. Written off-and-on over the course of the last ten years, the record is joyful and festive of course, but, much like the holiday season itself, it’s also laced with an undercurrent of longing and melancholy. For every playful portrait of giddy lovers on New Year’s Eve, there’s a stranded traveler spending Christmas alone; for every slick St. Nick in a suit and sunglasses there’s a lonely ex-pat waiting by the mailbox for cards that never seem to come. The arrangements are eclectic and intoxicating, drawing equal influence from Rouse’s Midwestern childhood and his decade-and-a-half spent living in Spain, and the performances here are sparkling and fizzy to match, blending jazz sophistication with rootsy sincerity and sly crooner charm. The result is a holiday record built for the long haul, a wholesome, whip smart collection that’s guaranteed to stay with you well after the snow has melted and all the decorations have come down. “I decided that if I was going to make a holiday record, I didn’t want to load it up with sleigh bells and choirs and sing the same old standards that everybody else has already sung,” says Rouse. “I wanted to write something that folks hadn’t heard before, something they could listen to year-round.”

“It was Nick (Lowe) that opened my eyes to how great holiday records could actually be,” says Rouse. “He showed me that you don’t have to be sappy or sentimental with it, that you can be yourself and put your own stamp on the tradition.” Rouse had already begun experimenting with his own holiday songs, writing a Christmas-themed tune or two every December just for the fun of it, but he’d never really considered recording or releasing them. Sometimes he’d perform the tracks live around the holidays; sometimes he’d sing them to get a laugh from his kids; sometimes he’d save them as voice memos on his phone and forget that they even existed. By the fall of 2018, though, Rouse realized he’d written more than enough material for a record, and, inspired by Lowe, he headed into Nashville’s Alex The Great studio for a four-day whirlwind of a session produced by longtime friend and collaborator Joe Pisapia (Guster, Ben Folds Five). “We recorded everything, even my vocals, live in just a couple takes,” says Rouse, who cut the album with the same group of musicians that backed him on ‘1972.’ “I’d give the guys some hints and direction here and there, but we work so well together that very little needed to be said. I was smiling after every performance.” “I approached writing these songs like I was soundtracking a film,” Rouse explains. “I was trying to bring all these little holiday scenes around the world to life with humor and heart.”

Distributed exclusively by Redeye 505 Eno St, Hillsborough NC, 27278

In that sense, the album fits seamlessly into Rouse’s catalog, just the latest chapter in an extraordinary career built on transportive, empathetic storytelling and rich, cinematic production. “This season brings the best of me,” he sings on “Easy Man.” ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ is proof of that.

Fountains of Wayne’s self-titled debut and the follow-up, Utopia Parkway, laid the foundation for the band’s reputation as masters of power pop, or as The Dean of Rock Critics, Robert Christgau, put it, “full-fledged art heroes”. Utopia Parkway, available on vinyl for the first time ever, features, “Red Dragon Tattoo”, “Denise”, and, “Laser Show”. PITCHFORK described the album as, “suburbia perfectly captured by four suburbanites with suburban sounds.” This is also the first Fountains of Wayne album to feature guitarist Jody Porter and drummer Brian Young, who joined the band after Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger had finished recording the debut album almost entirely on their own.

That’s How Much I Need Your Love 3. Summertime Thing 4. What Makes The Monkey Dance 5. Old Friends No other Love is now on vinyl for the first time outside of a limited German release in 2002. No other Love was the sixth album in a solo career that began when California native ChuCk ProPhet split from GreeN oN red in 1990. GreeN oN red helped lead the way for the insurgent country of the 1990s, but on his own Prophet has grown far beyond the category. No other Love is maverick genre-bending in the manner of Beck and Jim White, and the stylistic variety suits Prophet’s compositions, peopled by crazed desperados and beautiful losers. The songs run the gamut from the raunchy horn-driven swagger of “That’s How Much I Need Your Love” to the stinging, pleading “Elouise,” where his ever-inventive guitar vies with Farfisa organ. Prophet enjoys spicing songs with pop culture references, but his wry humor is counterbalanced by a strong moral undertow in “I Bow Down and Pray to Every Woman I See” and the beautiful “Summertime Thing.” This is a Prophet with plenty of honor. This limited edition release will be pressed on red splatter vinyl. This release is being manufactured at MPO in France. Mastered for vinyl by Jason NeSmith - Chase Park. NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, JAPAN, OR AUSTRALIA; THROW THIS PARTY EVERYWHERE ELSE!

The Blind Date Party hosted by Bill Callahan and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and featuring AZITA, Matt Sweeney, Alasdair Roberts, Matt Kinsey, Sean O’Hagan, Bill MacKay, George Xylouris, Dead Rider, David Pajo, Mick Turner, Meg Baird, Ty Segall, Emmett Kelly, Cory Hanson, Six Organs of Admittance, David Grubbs, Cassie Berman, Cooper Crain and Sir Richard Bishop happened online in the fall and winter of ’20–’21 — but the party planning dated back to the spring of 2020. Stuck at home, with no gigs in the foreseeable future, Bill, Bonnie and Drag City needed an outreach program to keep themselves busy, not to mention sane. In the absence of any company or anything on the calendar, playing songs they loved was an idea; playing with people they loved, the desire. And making it fun — so pairing someone with someone else having no say in the matter, the essence of the blind date, was the plan. Favorite songs were chosen; players from around the Drag City galaxy were messaged. Pretty soon, songs were flying back and forth — music in the air! And thus, they were entertained throughout the summer of 2020, when so much else in the world seemed so completely wrong. By the fall, the songs started to appear online: Bill and Bonnie singing a song by someone they loved and admired; each song cut by another artist they loved and admired, then sent to Bill and Bonny to provide the finishing touches. The spotlight pointed in every direction each week: toward the singers and writers who’d originally played the songs (Yusuf Islam, Hank Williams Jr., Dave Rich, The Other Years, Billie Eilish, Steely Dan, Lou Reed, Bill Callahan, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Wyatt, Judy Mayhan, Johnnie Frierson, Demis Roussos, Will Oldham, Leonard Cohen, David Berman, Iggy Pop and John Prine), the featured collaborators, the artists whose work adorned each digital single and videos made by still more collaborators. Now it was a party! Like the best parties, it turned out to be everything and more than they’d even hoped for. So many more people were involved in the process that we can get on the page here. Suffice to say, making records over the years has required a broad sense of community and an always-surprising mix of independence and unity, inspiration and utility. Some of our best memories are those where as many of our folks as as possible were together in one place at one time. In those moments, it was just a great thing just to be there. And with others looking in . . . this was a joy one could only be infinitely lucky to feel — and to take for granted, as well. The Blind Date Party was one of these, maybe the most improbable one yet. It’s for everyone who’s here and it’s in the name of everyone who’s gone but will never go and will always live with us. This album will too. And thus, we are entertained.

• AVAILABLE ON INDIE EXCLUSIVE CLEAR AS WELL AS STANDARD BLACK VINYL The Decemberists know that the psychology of a culture at war is complex; that historical archetypes can inform the masses on current events far better than the evening news; and, perhaps most importantly, that life is ultimately a spectacular and colorful pageant. They remind us that, on any given day, we might rub shoulders with rogue spies and runaway prostitutes, child monarchs and vengeful mariners, boy ghosts, couples contemplating suicide, cannibals and drowning angels. This existence is indeed a spectacle to be revered. In August of 2004, Rachel Blumberg, Jenny Conlee, Chris Funk, Colin Meloy, and Nate Query set up shop at a former Baptist church in Portland, Oregon. With co-producer Chris Walla at the controls, the five musicians collectively known as The Decemberists emerged three weeks later with the bulk of the work completed for Picaresque (Kill Rock Stars - March 22, 2005), their most ambitious and realized effort to date. Indeed, Picaresque explodes confidently into form on the first track “The Infanta.” Colin Meloy’s lyric gloriously paints the spectacle of a Portuguese child princess’s coronation. Sonically, Rachel Blumberg relentlessly announces the proceedings with a powerful rolling drum beat that does not cease until the Kings and Concubines and Elephants and Phalanxes and Virgins and Camels and Baronesses have all paid their respects to the child monarch. These are the types of characters and events that appear throughout a Colin Meloy penned soundscape

ARTIST: LILYS TITLE: BETTER CAN’T MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER BLACK VINYL LP BOX LOT QUANTITY: 30 LP FILE UNDER: INDIE ROCK LP 5594 UPC: 090771559418 FIRST-EVER VINYL REISSUE! A KRUNCHY KINKSY INDIE ROCK MUST HAVE! On the heels of our reissue of the Lilys 1999 cult classic The 3 Way, we’re honored to bring you its predecessor of equal acclaim, 1996’s Better Can’t Make Your Life Better. Together they form what most would call the band’s pseudo British Invasion period, and in our opinion, two of the greatest albums to come out of the 90s. This album found a new audience via multiple tracks appearing in AMC’s Lodge 49. We’re honored to bring you the first vinyl reissue of Better! “….sounding like something the Kinks would have made had Ray Davies embraced psychedelia instead of taking up charter membership in the Village Green Preservation Society. From start to finish, the record has an electric vitality and ebullience that was largely lacking in the grunge-laden mid-’90s.” - Robert Hickey - Popmatters.com “The Lilys became a different band with each album, thanks to the aesthetic whims of madcap leader Kurt Heasley and a revolving-door personnel policy that rivals the Fall’s. After shaking off their early ’90s shoegaze guise, the Lilys delivered a major-label debut that’s full of Kinks—in the big-K and little-k senses. Better Can’t Make Your Life Better is classic Brit-rock contorted: while “Shovel Into Spade Kit” revs up on a snarling riff you’d swear was emanating from an old Pye Records 45, Heasley spends the rest of the circuitous song smashing up the vinyl and gluing the pieces back together into curious new combinations. But the complicated approach could yield simple pleasures: Thanks to a plum placement in a Levi’s ad, the delirious, cowbell-clanging “Nanny in Manhattan” became the rare mid-’90s American rock import to jostle for chart space in the UK Top 20.” - Stuart Berman From Pitchfork’s The Best Britpop Albums That Aren’t British

TRACK LISTING

FINALLY AVAILABLE AGAIN! NOW ON GOLD VINYL! MARGO GURYAN'S HONEYED VOICE AND GORGEOUSLY SWEET SONGWRITING HAS BECOME A FAVORITE OF THE SOFT-POP SET. As a successful songwriter, her compositions have been recorded by the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Spanky & Our Gang, Astrid Gilberto, Claudine Longet, Oliver, Cass Elliot, Glen Campbell, Saint Etienne and Harry Belafonte. Her only solo album, the magnificent Take A Picture (featuring the hit “Sunday Morning"), has become a cult classic since its release in 1968, and no wonder: its combination of marvelously funky sunshine arrangements and Margo's delicious melodies are a heady combo. She’s influenced everyone from the Wondermints to Belle and Sebastian to Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (who listened to Take A Picture while writing Juno). In 2001, Margo released 25 Demos, a collection of fully-fleshed out demos from her personal collection. Most people's demos are mere sketches--Margo's are little baroque masterpieces, featuring string arrangements, circus organ, chamber-pop rhythm sections and tons of glorious echo. Modern Harmonic presents the biggest collection yet, 29 Demos, all lovingly wrapped in a gorgeous gatefold jacket loaded with liner notes. Finally, an album worthy to follow Take A Picture—two LP’s worth of magnificent soft-pop!

MANIC NO WAVE SAX FRENZY!

FIRST PRESSING OUTSIDE OF JAPAN!

James White tore up the city blueprints and charted his own map through the sonic sprawl of New York, perfecting a jittery, manic attack on sax and vocals and adopting the persona of a lounge singer in the waiting room of Hell. A maelstrom of chaotic transformations of funk, jazz (et al.) with equal parts James Brown and James White originals that rank among the most incendiary in his repertoire, this album is available outside of Japan for the first time and pressed on colored vinyl! Due to its plethora of sublime rhythms and prismatic shimmy, a party atmosphere is in full effect on Melt Yourself Down. The band presents a master class of cutting-edge downtown New York City funk that evokes an endless evening riding NYC’s late-night slipstream. White’s avatar, the Godfather himself, James Brown, is paid respects with a pair of hot takes, including “Super Bad,” which kicks off the album. Later, during “Cold Sweat,” White grows increasingly agitated, injecting an element of chaos into the methodical groove while adding some of his own coitus-inspired lyrics. Melt Yourself Down executes White’s prime directive—provoke pleasure, by any means necessary.

ARTIST: CLAUDIA THOMPSON TITLE: GOODBYE TO LOVE CD WITH BONUS TRACKS BOX LOT QUANTITY: 60 FILE UNDER: JAZZ MHCD-235 UPC: 090771823526 The mysterious vocalist many searched for was not the white woman on the original cover. Claudia Thompson (below) is is finally on the cover of her sole release dating back to 1959.

CORRECTING A 60 YEAR-OLD RACIALLY-CHARGED WRONG! Sultry and sophisticated songbird jazz backed by guitar icon Barney Kessel! Includes culturally corrected cover art & photos featuring the real Claudia Thompson, 2 CD only bonus tracks, and new liner notes from Laina Dawes. “Goodbye to Love is both a collection of re-envisioned Jazz standards, crafted with a delicate touch and more importantly, introduces this young ingenue and highlights Claudia Thompson’s soulful voice to the world. On ‘Gloomy Sunday,’ Thompson's rendition is accompanied by a plaintive, soft, Spanish-inflected guitar, courtesy of famed guitarist Barney Kessel, that accentuates her measured vocal performance, suggesting that she understands the importance of this song. She makes this version, first recorded by Billie Holiday, her own through this softness, replacing the serrated, wisened edges of Holiday’s delivery by embodying a quiet desperation to recapture the love of a lost one. Thompson is careful about her vocal inflections, adding a nuance that allows the listener to dream of being with her, wanting to know who she is and why she is so lonely. Her desire is palatable, yet there is something in her voice that suggests that this woman has lived a life full of emotional entanglements and disappointments.” – Laina Dawes (What Are You Doing Here?:

A Black Woman's Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal)

L

ead Vocalist / Keyboardist George Frayne took on the stage name and persona of Commander Cody after co-founding the band in 1967. Although the group’s style was often described in its early days as country-rock, the Bay Area-based band had a harder-driving style — and, as its sci-fiserial-based name would indicate, more of a sense of humor — than other country-influenced artists coming along at the time down in Los Angeles, like the Eagles or Poco. The sounds of rockabilly, Western swing, jump blues, jazz and boogie-woogie piano figured into the band’s free-wheeling style as readily as country, finding enthusiastic fans among followers of rock groups like the Grateful Dead, for whom Commander Cody sometimes opened, as well as devotees of more traditional music forms. In concert was always the best way to experience Commander Cody and this new 2 cd set features a plethora of previously unreleased live recordings showcasing the band in the ‘70s.

The first short documentary by legendary artist/photographer Glen E. Friedman looks back on an essential period in the history of skateboarding, but more directly on how the original award winning documentary affected the original surviving members of that influential team (Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Peggy Oki, Wentzle Ruml and others) and what they thought about the original film itself, 20 years after its release. Fu Manchu provided the entire soundtrack for the film with the songs personally curated by Glen E. Friedman. This official soundtrack recording release features all 9 tracks featured in the film in the order that they appear. The music spans the band’s entire career from “Free And Easy (Summer Girls)” from the band’s 1994 debut album, No One Rides For Free, to “Il Mostro Atomico” featuring Alex Lifeson of Rush, from their most recent full length album, Clone Of The Universe. This is the only release from the band that features two instrumentals: “Out To Sea” from 2004’s Start The Machine and “Hanglider,” which was originally released on the Japanese version of 2000’s King Of The Road. This limited edition double LP run is pressed on one blue and one green vinyl and features an etching from legendary skater, Lance Mountain. The gatefold jacket features rare photos from Glen E. Friedman including an incredible shot of the late Jay Adams across the inside. All tracks were remastered specifically for this vinyl release. The limited edition 1000 unit CD run also features the same photos and a digital specific remaster. 1.“Trapeze Freak” 2.“Travel Agent” 3.“Hanglider” 4.“Mongoose” 5.“Out To Sea” 6.“The Last Question” 7.“Tilt”) 8.“Free And Easy (Summer Girls)” 9.“Il Mostro Atomico”

IVO NEAME GLIMPSES OF TRUTH

Ivo Neame's twisting grooves and harmonic ingenuity have helped establish his distinct voice in international contemporary jazz. The celebrated Phronesis pianist returns to Whirlwind for ‘Glimpses of Truth’, a powerful artistic statement marking the first time Neame's big band compositions have been committed to disc. Neame's most assured body of work to date will undoubtedly be remembered as one of this period's most impressive artistic achievements. Label: WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS Cat. No: WR4782 Format: CD Barcode: 0655498297960

"Having lots of people play this intricate polyrhythmic music can be really emotionally powerful," says Neame. Taking inspiration from Phronesis' large ensemble projects, the compositions also played a didactic role, as a way of introducing newcomers to complex rhythmic structures. The pandemic flipped that idea on its head: faced with dwindling opportunities to hear these compositions live, Neame thought "'I'm just going to plough on regardless and record it all'." Composed, multi-tracked (Neame plays all the tutti sax lines), videoed, mixed and mastered remotely over the pandemic period, ‘Glimpses of Truth’ embraces the digital on a global scale, as Gilad Hekselman, Jim Hart and Ingrid Jensen appear alongside a stellar selection of UK musicians. Neame stumbled across an article which claimed that 12 million Americans believe interstellar lizards run the United States. "I wanted to write a tune that would encourage people to wake up and question their beliefs" - 'Rise of the Lizard People' is what followed, immediately dropping you into Neame's world of pulsing rhythms and shifting feels. The album finds Neame well equipped on his continued search for hard-fought truths. Personnel: Ivo Neame (piano), Nathaniel Facey (alto saxophone), Ingrid Jensen, Noel Langley (trumpet), Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Jason Yarde (baritone saxophone), George Crowley (tenor saxophone), Trevor Mires (trombone), Gareth Lockrane (flutes), Jim Hart (vibraphone), Tom Farmer (double bass), James Maddren & Jon Scott (drums) Tracks: 1. The Rise Of The Lizard People 2. Strega 3. Broken Brains 4. Phasing Song 5. Persevere Part 1 6. Persevere Part 2 7. Ghostly Figure

On “West Coast Highway Cosmic” DATURA4 have hit the motorway running for another sonic journey through burning boogie, dirty blues grooves, psych and rock & roll landscapes. Dig it!

If you were lucky enough to grow up in the 60s and 70s, you know that the music coming out at that time had a certain vibe. We’re not talking about the bubble-gum pop that was prevalent on the AM stations of the day. This is that blues based, uber-overdriven, gritty sound that blasted on many a stereo. Australian rockers Datura4 have captured not just the sound, but that whole atmospheric ambience on their latest release, West Coast Highway Cosmic. – AMERICAN BLUES SCENE

What press wrote about “Ow”: „Their music also captures the angst and confusion that accompanies coming of age as a young woman: Lyrics dive into mental illness, heartache, and desperation to belong. They’re stretched over plucky fingerpicked guitar and thrashing rock riffs, with Berrin’s voice at the center, adding glimmering force to lines like, “I think it’s best you stay the fuck out of my way.” (Pitchfork, Great Records You May Have Missed, Summer 2019) “2019’s Ow EP, [is] a gorgeous, visceral collection of seven songs that reckon with love, pain, youth, and identity. On the EP, Berrin’s vocals are endlessly refreshing and smooth, and with Shelby Keller on drums, Alex Mercuri on guitar, and Mari Ale Figeman on bass, each track is a dynamic indie-rock wonderland. ! CUBA: Music and Revolution

Culture Clash in Havana: Experiments in Latin Music 1975-85 Vol.2 10th December 17th December2021 2021 !

REVIEWS of CUBA: Music and Revolution Vol. 1:

"We already have a strong contender for 'compilation of the year'. Put together by devout crate-diggers and Cuban music enthusiasts Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records)" JUNO "It's abundantly clear that these compilers are at the very top of their game. Everything here was previously unheard outside of Cuba, making this a feast for the curious" Vinyl District "Priceless comp that goes far beyond Buena Vista!” UNCUT Cuba: Music and Revolution: Culture Clash in Havana: Experiments in Latin Music 1975-85 Vol. 2 is the new album compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) that takes off in exactly the same vein as the much-acclaimed Vol. 1 – exploring the many styles that came out of Cuba in the 1970s as Latin and Salsa mixed with heavy doses of Jazz, Funk, and Disco to create some of the most dancefloor-friendly music ever made! The album comes as a heavyweight 3xLP and deluxe 2xCD set, complete with extensive sleeve notes, and is jam-packed with heavy bass lines, synth and Wah-Wah guitar funk combined with the heavyweight percussion, powerful brass lines and the all-encompassing Latin rhythms of Cuban music known throughout the world. Much of the music on this album is featured in the deluxe large format book ‘Cuba: Music and Revolution: Original Cover Art of Cuban Music: Record Sleeve Designs of Revolutionary Cuba 1959-90’, released by Soul Jazz Books and also compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records), featuring the music and record designs of Cuba, made in the 30-year period following the Cuban Revolution. The music on this new album features a host of rarities from legendary Cuban artists such as Los Van Van, alongside Grupo De Experimentación, Farah Maria, Ricardo Eddy Martinez, Juan Pablo Torres, Grupo Sintesis and Orquesta Riverside, most of whose names remain largely unknown outside of Cuba but have long been favourite club tracks and secret-weapons in Gilles Peterson’s record boxes! The music on this album reflects the most cutting-edge of Cuban groups that were recording in Cuba in the 1970s and 1980s – all searching for a new Cuban identity and new musical forms reflecting both the Afro-Cuban cultural heritage of a nation that gave birth to Latin music and its new position as a socialist state. Most of the music featured on this album has never been heard outside of Cuba. Both Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker have been involved in Cuban music for more than two decades – Gilles Peterson with his many Havana Cultura projects for his Brownswood label and Stuart Baker with a number of Soul Jazz Records albums recorded in Cuba. This Soul Jazz Records album is released in conjunction with Egrem, the Cuban state record company, and has been put together after the many crate-digging trips that both compilers have made on the streets of Havana and beyond in Cuba stretching over a 20-year period, searching out rare and elusive original Cuban vinyl records. What an outstanding compilation of artists who played at the International Pop Underground Convention in 1991. You read the performers list; from Bratmobile, to Courtney Love, to Bikini Kill, to Nirvana, to 7 Year Bitch. This is a beautiful 'snapshot' of the best of the early 90's west coast, and perhaps more importantly and as the liner notes accurately put it, “all of these bands have faith in the future of punk rock and they are, without question, punk rock.” Kill Rock Stars is an excellent 14-track various-artists collection capturing the essence of early-’90s indie-rock pop underground. It’s divided equally between amateurish indie-pop, abrasive punk and riot grrrl, featuring many of the best underground bands of that time, including Bratmobile, Mecca Normal, Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Unwound, Nation of Ulysses, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Nirvana, and Lois performing under the name Courtney Love.

If there was a single compliation of “Grunge” this would be it. Between Bikini Kill, Infamous Menagere and Nirvana, you really get a sense of what was going on during the early 1990s. I don't think it is over the top to say that this is a slice of music revolution.

ELLIOTT SMITH

NEEDLE IN THE HAY 7” Released on New Year’s Day, 1995, “Needle In The Hay” followed up on Elliott Smith’s debut album Roman Candle the previous year, and appeared as the lead track on the eponymous Elliott Smith later in ’95. The song has left a remarkable legacy, having been covered by an array of artists spanning Juliana Hatfield, Bad Astronaut, and Kermit the Frog. This 7” features “Needle In The Hay” backed with “Alphabet City” and “Some Song”, offering an encapsulation of Smith’s early work.

SPEED TRIALS 7” Released on October 1, 1996, “Speed Trials” was the first single from Elliott Smith’s breakthrough album, Either/Or. The track’s careening rhythms and languished vocal melodies have kept it a favorite in Smith’s catalogue decades after its debut. Backed with additional Either/Or track “Angeles” and the elsewhere unreleased “I Don't Think I'm Ever Gonna Figure It Out”, this 7” highlights Smith’s talent during one of the most earnest and creative periods of his life.

MATRIMONY KITTY FINGER STREET DATE: DEC 17, 2021 SIDE A 1. Elvis Superstar 2. Motorbiker 3. Bleached 4. Lonesome Cowboy 5. Prick 6. Frantic Romantic 7. Two Storey Man 8. In A Little Minute

SIDE B 9. Kitty Finger 10. Whirlpool Head 11. Mister Popstar 12. Fish And Chip Sweetheart 13. Pete Song 14. Come Back Baby 15. Refrigerator

• 1ST VINYL REISSUE SINCE THE ORIGINAL 1989 PRESSING • REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL TAPES

Matrimony emerged from the scrum of yobbos making noise in late-’80s Australia (Cosmic Psychos, Lubricated Goat, etc.), a nearly all-female band of punk-pop minimalists as raw emotionally as musically. Building songs around simple, repetitive bass lines and the languidly morose vocals of one Sybilla, the band reveals its disaffection more through what it doesn’t say than what it does. So while choppy guitar squalls underpin songs like “Kitty Finger” and “Fish and Chips Sweetheart,” elsewhere the playing is stripped nearly bare. Sybilla’s love/hate relationship with her titular subject on “Mr. Pop Star” is reduced to a series of stuttered yelps, while her dispassionate plea on “Come Back Baby” is backed only by finger snaps and the ubiquitous heavy bass lines, distilling a lifetime of self-pitying angst into a two-minute session in front of a cracked bedroom mirror. Matrimony also pays a nominal tribute by covering the Scientists’ “Frantic Romantic” even more dourly than the original.

From the howling wind guitar over the swamp bass of "Refrigerator' through the off-kilter sour-voiced interpretation of the Scientists' ' Frantic Romantic,' which they recast from near power-pop to almost a dirge, Matrimony prove just how bad the good old days were. – Alternative Press This is the great lost riot grrrl album, released by a young mostly female (they had a boy drummer) band from Sydney in 1989. Something of a late-80's bridge between the Slits, Lydia Lunch & Bikini Kill – Joe S. Harrington One of those mostly unheard instant classics that surface from time to time out of the mire of obscurity. Matrimony was a fantastic punk band in Sydney, Australia in the late 80's. The music is primitive, swampy, fun and catchy; like a sister to early Bikini Kill or a cousin of Lung Leg. – Heartstroke Records

Bright Green Field is an album of towering scope and ambition, it is deeply considered, paced and intricately constructed. With all band members playing such a vital and equal role, this album is very much the product of five heads operating as one. Some bands might be tempted to include previous singles on their debut - and the band already released two more in 2020 via ‘Sludge’ and ‘Broadcaster’ - but instead Bright Green Field is completely new. This sense of limitlessness and perpetual forward motion is one of the the key ingredients that makes Squid so loved by fans and critics alike, from BBC Radio 6 Music who have A-Listed previous singles, ‘Houseplants’, ‘The Cleaner’ and ‘Match Bet’ to publications such as, The Guardian, NME, The Face, The Quietus and countless others. The band was also on the longlist for the BBC Music Sound of 2020 poll.

‘Established!’ is the new album from RP Boo, his fourth full-length for Planet Mu. In 2013, Mu released his debut ‘Legacy’ – an acclaimed album that put RP on the international music map, acknowledging his unique role in the creation of the Chicagodeveloped art form known as Footwork. It’s been said that RP Boo is to Footwork what Juan Atkins is to Techno. The start. The Soul.

RP Boo deliberately labelled his new album ‘Established!’ because that’s simply what he is. He’s thankful for being bestowed with a unique talent that has not diminished and continues to excite Footworkers both locally in Chicago and around the globe. Footwork remains a Chicago-centred art form, under-recognized at home, yet loved worldwide and RP remains its grounding point, with his productions being the place the entire scene goes to. On ’Established!’ RP looks back to that time when he was inventing Footwork, going out listening to disco and linking with the creators of house such as Paul Johnson. For tracks like ‘Another Night To Party’ or ‘Finally Here (ft. Afiya)’ he takes himself back in time to when he started DJing, playing ghetto house and being inspired by jack tracks. These moments were the foundation point to create his own style, elevating his sound into new territories for the future. With ‘Established!’ RP wanted to return what he soaked up over his journey and remind people of the layers of connections between various Chicago dance musics. Another side of ‘Established!’ is the ’battle track’ mentality. The battle dance circle of course comes from Hip-Hop and also earlier forms of American Black Music. Tracks like ‘Haters Increase The Heat!’ reflect this competitive aspect of Footwork – RP notes “I was feeling heat that I detected targeting me in the scene and I grab it and tracked it out and that’s what fueled the track.” He adds “I'm not bothered by haters and no one should be – there’s no valid reason to.” He goes on to explain the track ‘Now U Know’ – how the track takes that hater energy and uses it as a way to “set the seed for footwork battles” transferring the energy “to a dancer (who can then) display it with goodness of their art.“ RP goes on to indicate how this reflects Chicago – “I’m a witness. Without understanding how, you can have hate implanted in society.” Footwork to RP is a way to counter these social ills – “to then grow out of it and have people understanding greater change - to start heading in the right direction.” ‘Established!’ is also a record about Black pride, Black dignity, Black beauty and Black creativity. This is perhaps best reflected in the track “Beauty Speak Of Sounds.“ The track was one of the last compositions completed for the album and RP was imagining himself “in the grasslands of Africa” and he set about thinking how his “spirit” felt in that setting using sounds and grooves that he wouldn’t normally use. Ultimately ‘Established!’ is a snapshot of RP Boo letting listeners even further into his musical world – ”I want the listeners to really get close to something beautiful, to sit back and enjoy with family and friends.” PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. “The songs are just stories that relate to my life, but they’re open to the listener’s interpretation. They tell me what the songs mean to them. The Australian performer travelled via Berlin to eventually settle in Manchester and is joined here by some of the city's most talented improvisers. Richard Jones and Johnny Hunter cover piano and drums respectively, whilst bassist Joshua Cavanagh-Brierley and trumpeter Aaron Wood add graceful touches to complete the quintet's intimate feel. Smith's depictions of night-time have an enigmatic quality, inviting listeners on an atmospheric journey but all the while pointing to something greater. Smith's work moves swiftly through genres, driven by her unique artistry. A City Music Foundation artist, she has received commissions from Manchester Collective and Opera North, as well as Manchester Jazz Festival and Jazz North. As co-creator of theatre company Ulita, she also creates collaborative pieces that blend theatre, music and visual arts. 'Friends with Monsters' continues that theatrical drive - "I'm a very natural storyteller, I just love to tell stories. I find myself weaving everyday events into tales that are very narratively pleasing." Set over the course of a single evening, 'Friends with Monsters' explores changing states of insomnia, informed by Smith's own sleepless nights. It's realised in four distinct sections; each is introduced by a scene-setting interlude. Delving deeper into the dreamy world of Smith's storyland rewards greatly.

Precepts for Piano and Strings is a graphic score with pitch suggestions and vague time perimeters composed in four movements. It was written for violin, cello, bass, and piano, and provides a guideline for collective improvisation. The piece revolves around four distinct lines and how they exist and interact with one another, each line representing one musician. The proximity, connection, or lack thereof of the aforementioned lines indicate the rate of interaction between the performers, dictating how closely one musician’s pulse is related to another. It was composed during COVID-19 times (Fall 2020) and therefore on an emotive level deals with isolation, while on a practical level asks the question of how we can still collabo-
