First Edition CD and LP feature bonus disk with three holiday classics, including a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas,” + three demo versions of album tracks LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL “I was never a holiday record kind of guy,” he laughs. “Growing up, I remember hearing Vince Guaraldi and Bing Crosby and all the staples everybody listens to each winter, but I never collected Christmas music or anything like that.” It makes sense, then, that The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse isn’t your typical yuletide collection. Written off-and-on over the course of the last ten years, the record is joyful and festive of course, but, much like the holiday season itself, it’s also laced with an undercurrent of longing and melancholy. For every playful portrait of giddy lovers on New Year’s Eve, there’s a stranded traveler spending Christmas alone; for every slick St. Nick in a suit and sunglasses there’s a lonely ex-pat waiting by the mailbox for cards that never seem to come. The arrangements are eclectic and intoxicating, drawing equal influence from Rouse’s Midwestern childhood and his decade-and-a-half spent living in Spain, and the performances here are sparkling and fizzy to match, blending jazz sophistication with rootsy sincerity and sly crooner charm. The result is a holiday record built for the long haul, a wholesome, whip smart collection that’s guaranteed to stay with you well after the snow has melted and all the decorations have come down. “I decided that if I was going to make a holiday record, I didn’t want to load it up with sleigh bells and choirs and sing the same old standards that everybody else has already sung,” says Rouse. “I wanted to write something that folks hadn’t heard before, something they could listen to year-round.” “It was Nick (Lowe) that opened my eyes to how great holiday records could actually be,” says Rouse. “He showed me that you don’t have to be sappy or sentimental with it, that you can be yourself and put your own stamp on the tradition.” “We recorded everything, even my vocals, live in just a couple takes,” says Rouse, who cut the album with the same group of musicians that backed him on ‘1972.’ “I’d give the guys some hints and direction here and there, but we work so well together that very little needed to be said. I was smiling after every performance.”

The 2002 debut from this 21 year-old singer-songwriter (and classicallytrained pianist) went Platinum and scored a Top Five single with “A Thousand Miles” and another Top 40 hit with “Ordinary Day.” That kind of commercial success might predispose one to presume that Carlton was another in a long line of Madonna descendants named Britney or Mandy or Christina. Instead, her earnest songwriting, positively Wakemanlike piano chops, and some ambitious production touches (from producer Ron Fair) land her squarely in the Fiona/Alanis/Tori camp of young female singer-songwriters, with maybe a little Alicia Keys in there, too. Sure, the lyrics are heart-on-the-sleeve, maybe even a little naïve—but is that such a bad thing when you’re only 21? One night in 1975, a successful tax lawyer named Rafael Machuca had his mind blown in Barranquilla’s ‘Plaza de los Musicos’. Overnight he went from a high ranking position in the Columbian revenue authority to visionary production guru of the newly formed record label that bore his name, Discos Machuca, and for the next six years he devoted his life to releasing some of the strangest, most experimental Afro Psychedelia Cumbias ever produced. La Locura de Machuca is the story of one man’s bizarre odyssey into Colombia’s coastal music underground, and the wild, hypnotic sounds he helped bring up to the surface. Porridge Radio started as Dana Margolin’s bedroom project, but grew to a Brighton-based band who, on this debut, inelegantly knotted together tender melodic pop songs with vicious and furious emotional outpour. After a series of home-recorded solo demos and the growing legend of their live shows on the UK DIY scene, they originally released this lofi debut full band LP in 2016. The album documents struggles with life, love and boredom - spelt out with sticky fingers by five idiot savants. RP&OF's lyrics, title and artwork, as well as the group's name, brings to mind a certain scrapbook absurdism at the core of Porridge Radio's earlier work. Faced with the dark abyss of existence, Margolin and co. scrape together some value from the nonsensical and the pointless, and then cling to it, giggling, for dear life. Some of London-based electronic songwriter Ryan Lee West’s most recognised work to date comes in the shape of spontaneous EP or so-called mini album releases— clocking in just under the 40minute mark, keeping their contents urgent, immediate and to the point. As with his 2013 EP Odyssey and 2014’s Sonne, which were later compiled to a full-length release titled Odyssey / Sonne in 2015, there is a similarly strong synergy between his 2016 mini album Night Melody and this year’s Articulation — made available on CD and digital formats under the title Night Melody / Articulation on November 25, 2020. His 34-minute, 6-track mini album Night Melody was born out of and shaped by long hours working into the night. It’s nocturnal in sound; mysterious in the way that the early hours so often are. The opening statement Pattern Of The North starts off with a collage of spliced synth melodies, inspired by anxiety that accompanies going home for Christmas. It’s followed by Johannesburg, an early sketch gradually filled out during his tour in South Africa. The closing statement What Sorrow is a fitting end to the album, building from gentle melancholia to a joyous crescendo. It’s a sensibility that’s central to the record; joy and sorrow both find their counterpoints. July 31, 2020 saw the release of his highly anticipated new album Articulation with an equal running time of 34 minutes. Lead track and album centrepiece ‘Articulation’ links the record back to the analogue fluidity and colour of 2016’s Night Melody. The division of varying time signatures, intertwined with a complex structure of notes, creates an expression of a moving structure and conjures a dreamy, motorik energy. Articulation, which followed 2018’s Persona, was conceived with a very visual way of thinking, unusual for the London musician and producer. During the writing process Ryan drew structures, shapes and patterns by hand to try and find new ways of thinking about music, giving himself a way to problem-solve away from the computer. The album title references a piece by the avant-garde contemporary composer Györgi Ligeti, though not for its music, but for the non-traditional graphic score that accompanied it. The idea of using analogue drawings and tools to bolster digital creations can be heard in the structure of the pieces that make up Articulation from the broody techno opener ‘Vibrations on a String’ all the way to the album’s boundless closer ‘Sudden Awareness of Now’. While the anthemic rise and fall of ‘Still Here’ and the beatless ambient meditation ‘Melodica’ evoke a certain nostalgia, ‘Forwardism’ achieves the very opposite by burying its melody within the fast-paced rhythm of its pulsating synths. Rising out of birdsong heard from his studio window, ‘Sudden Awareness of Now’ has a particular urgency about it and seems to perfectly capture a longing for escape. Built around a simple and repetitive melodic theme, expanding and retracting over the course of its seven-minute odyssey.

‘All The Time’, Jessy Lanza's first album since 2016's ‘Oh No’, is the most pure set of pop songs that she and creative partner Jeremy Greenspan have recorded, reflective and finessed over time and distance. Innovative juxtapositions sound natural, like rigid 808s rubbing against delicate chords in ‘Anyone Around’, subtle footwork flutter giving a nervous energy to ‘Face’, unusual underwater rushes underpinning ‘Baby Love’. The songs also sound more “live” than ever before. Jessy’s voice is treated, re-pitched and edited on songs like ‘Ice Creamy’ and gestural sounds seem to respond to her lyrics in songs such as ‘Like Fire’, which reward the listener on repeated plays. More than previous albums, the lyrics on ‘All The Time’ became an important focus for Jessy too, channelling the negativity of anger and frustration arising from some significant changes in her personal situation into the text. These lyrics sometimes process raw feelings, which aren't obvious to begin with, but are soon felt, standing in stark contrast to the cushioned settings of the music. ‘All The Time’ has ended as a triumph and an abstracted diary of a sometimes difficult, but enduring friendship and creative relationship, and it’s their best work yet.

BACK TO MINE FATBOV SLIM OVERVIEW Next in the compiler hotseat for seminal mix series 'Back to Mine' is the legendary DJ and producer Fatboy Slim. Having sold over 10 million records and embarked on a number of sold out arena tours, the esteemed record collector and all round great selector delves deep into his weighty collection at his home to create a heady journey of funk and soul. The collection opens with Dave Barker & Ansell Collins 'Monkey Spanner' - a reggae single released in 1971 from the Kingston based duo working for the infamous producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. There are a few rare finds, Donal Leace 'Today Won't Come Again', Wind 'Grooving With Mr Bloe' and George Rene 'Smokey Joe's La La'. • Debut release for Kill Rock Stars • 7” limited to 500 copies on clear vinyl UK punk bands Big Joanie and Charmpit’s split seven inch single, Kluster Rooms Sessions, will be released on Kill Rock Stars in November 2020. The single features early recordings of Black feminist punk band Big Joanie’s haunting depiction of a lost relationship ‘Cut Your Hair’ on the A side and Californian punks Charmpit’s whip sharp retort to a petty boss ‘Bad Attitude’ on the B side. The bands’ formation at First Timers Fest (an annual event where new bands play their first gig), connection with the London DIY punk scene, and their shared member Estella Adeyeri (who plays guitar in Charmpit and bass in Big Joanie) made their pairing an obvious choice. Both songs were recorded and mixed separately by engineer and producer Chris Smith at East London’s Kluster Rooms, Big Joanie in March 2017 and Charmpit in February 2018. The bands took advantage of free recording time on offer as part of a wider scheme to help more women and non-binary people get into the sound engineering industry. “We leapt at the chance to do a split EP with Big Joanie because we love them,” said guitarist and singer in Charmpit, Rhianydd YorkWilliams. “We're so psyched to be working with Kill Rock Stars. They are a cool breeze to work with and have so much love for what they do.”

Once dubbed “punk’s greatest hidden treasure” by Stereogum, Mal Blum writes cleverly crafted songs that are as self-effacing as they are viscerally relatable. Following on from 2019’s Pity Boy LP, a brand new 7”, to be released via Saddle Creek’s Document Series*, is the last thing they recorded with their band before hunkering down to wait out the pandemic. Recorded in drummer Ricardo Lagomasino’s basement in Maine, months before coronavirus was a word in our collective periphery, these two new songs are embellished by the band’s time there. In between takes, Barrett padded the hardwood in his slippers. Audrey fixed herself lunch in the kitchen. Ricardo’s wife, Meg, was pregnant at the time but she said she didn’t mind the noise that drifted up to the living room. The house felt brimming with possibility. “Since then, my associations of home have changed,” Mal says. “In recent months, in quarantine, I only write and record songs by myself. Listening back, this seven-inch feels like a relic. An old photograph of a weekend spent idly with my bandmates years ago, though it was only a few months. Spending the weekend together felt like a reprieve. Home is a respite. It doesn’t have to be yours.” Lead track “Nobody Waits” is a song about patience, rejection, loneliness, love, depression, and acceptance. The possibility that we may never meet somebody who is willing to embrace every part of us. The song posits that being loved is an impossible, Sisyphean task, akin to leaving something burning in the oven in a house where there is no entryway.

Her b2b and romantic partner Eris Drew is a DJ and producer who runs the T4T LUV NRG recording label from the log cabin they share in New Hampshire. Their compilation for fabric was mixed from all-vinyl and recorded in their abode in the woods. Some of the records have been in their collection for decades. The mix is about letting go and trusting that change is good during a time when the very idea of hope is under challenge. The duo are collage artists so a variety of themes are woven throughout the mix, with narratives reappearing via our use of drops, scratches, and doubles. The result is an emotionally joyful celebration of house music across the decades. The double vinyl product takes ten selections from the mix and shows them off in their full length glory. They have kept it at 2/3 tracks per side for maximum loudness during playback. B1 by Global Method ‘Good Life (Orbital Mix)’ is a 90s super rare cut and is now club playable, alongside Maya’s exclusive ‘River’. Formed in London in 2012, Flowers have released two albums and an increasingly assured string of singles of beautiful, effecting pop with echoes of C86 indie, post-punk pop, shoegaze, 90s 4AD and even early Slumberland Records. Far more than just a sum of their influences, they've dazzled pop fans around the world with their distinctively spiky songs and Rachel Kennedy's thrilling, ethereal vocals."Erik" is their contribution to Slumberland's SLR30 Singles Series and their first single since 2017. Written about their wayward pet hamster, it's a lovely tune that wouldn't sound out of place on a Belly or Breeders record, a prime piece of the grungy, fuzzy pop that Flowers are so expert at creating. On the flip, "Candour" is deeper and slower, recalling early SLR groups like Black Tambourine and Henry's Dress, a connection that makes their participation in our singles series all the more appropriate.

Neutrals are a punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area, channeling a wide range of '70s and '80s punk, post-punk, and indie-pop influences. Renee Heartfelt were a band ahead of their time. While that's possibly an all-too-often used excuse for why a band goes unnoticed until long after breaking up, it truly feels justified in this instance. Formed by musicians who had cut their teeth in a list of bands that reads like a who's who of late '90s / early 2000s hardcore, this time around they were taking a familiar turn towards the more melodic and less aggressive. The music they created captured the essence of "post-hardcore," quite literally: these songs could only be created by those with a strong working knowledge of hardcore's most potent elements, matched with a love for a broader palette of outside influences. After releasing an impressive EP, 2004's 'Magdalene,' the band entered the studio with Matt Squire, not yet the pop producer with credits on tracks by Ariana Grande and One Direction. When Renee Heartfelt began recording their lone full length 'Death of The Ghost' with Squire, he had just finished working on what would be his watershed effort, Panic At The Disco's 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.' Needless to say, his production ear was on the cusp of being noticed by bigger artists and labels, and that quality is evident on the Renee Heartfelt recordings. TRACKLIST:

But this story doesn't have a happy ending. 'Death of The Ghost' was released in 2005 while Renee Heartfelt struggled to find their audience. Touring tended to be alongside hardcore bands, with finding sonically similar artists proving nearly impossible. There were the random one-off dates, including supporting Walking Concert, but the wave of enthusiasm for this purest form of post-hardcore hadn't yet swept through; only a few years later, bands like Title Fight and Balance & Composure would begin creating similarly influenced music that succeeded where Renee Heartfelt never could. In the face of the realities of life and members finding other outlets for their creativity, the band ultimately faded away. Yet, in the intervening 15 years, Renee Heartfelt has built an almost cult-like following, some among them lucky enough to have seen the band play, but an even larger number whom discovered their music too late. And with only a few of their songs ever making it to vinyl, 6131 Records has unearthed this phenomenal music for a proper discography release on limited edition double LP vinyl. The collection features all the the complete EP and LP recordings, as well as four additional rare or never-before-released songs. The hope being that a whole new wave of fans will discover this incredible music that has been overlooked for far too long.

Harlem Hipshake sees the welcome return of The Bongolian AKA multi-instrumentalist and Big Boss Man front man Nasser Bouzida. This, the sixth album under The Bongolian moniker, follows the highly acclaimed Moog Maximus. Harlem Hipshake finds The Bongolian deeply immersed in his lifelong love for the music of the sixties New York’s Latin Soul scene, particularly the music of Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria and Joe Bataan. Over the course of 42 minutes, we travel from barren wastelands to mysterious cities, encountering trials of both body and spirit. It is indeed a 6 track instrumental journey. All vividly evoked by a canny grasp of dynamics, melody and heavy, but hooky riffs, executed with peerless playing. 'Journey Through The Twilight Desert' opens the album in soundtrack mode, and develops in weight and riff (as if Goblin have taken up the baton) and closes in a full wide screen Mogwai trip .... and that's just the opening track. Elsewhere Mountain Caller pushes to noisier, heavier groovier places. Whether it’s the chiming guitars on the Krautrock/post-rock groove of 'I remember Everything' or 'Trial by Combat' and its doom meets Deftones vibe. Porto-based experimental duo Paisiel comprise Portuguese drummer João Pais Filipe and German saxophonist Julius Gabriel. The vibe Paisiel achieve across their second album ‘Unconscious Death Wishes’ sounds specific, singular and ultimately unique. The pair first met in 2014, began recording as Paisiel in 2017, released their first, self -titled album on cassette through local label Lovers & Lollypops in 2018 and had it pressed onto vinyl in 2019 courtesy of Rocket Recordings, who have maintained the partnership for this follow-up.A progression from what was already forward-facing music, ‘Unconscious Death Wishes’ is a single 39-minute piece recorded using improvisation based around composed structures, or what the drummer calls “instant composition”. Beginning quietly and mournfully, an array of percussion, avantelectro synths (think Cabaret Voltaire or Muslimgauze) and expansive sax swiftly takes hold. At times, this could be a late 60s proto-Krautrock cafeteria jam, early 70s New York loft jazz happening or Brazilian street parade from whichever decade takes your fancy.Listeners might read all kinds of emotions or states of mind into this music: Paisiel themselves play to transcend such earthly concerns. ‘Unconscious Death Wishes’ is their way of evoking, in Julius’ words, “landscapes, shapes, colours, proportions and movements”. The band’s current duo of Tomi Leppänen and Jussi Lehtisalo first channelled their love of krautrock-damaged monomania into synth-driven motorik soundscapes on 2019’s ‘5’ yet this new exploration is a step way beyond, into a chilly and captivating electronic panorama. Beholden to the melodies and textures of Kraftwerk yet also the cinematic austerity of EBM and the effervescent pulse of classic Italo-pop, it’s further abetted by fierce and corrosive vocals from longtime collaborator and Sumac/Isis/Old Man Gloom seer Aaron Turner, which stand atop these futuristic serenades not unlike the fevered delivery of a dystopian hellfire preacher. The result, richly coherent yet startling even for the unpredictable world of this band, arrives like a series of otherworldly epiphanies. The opening ‘Path Eternal’ sets its stall out in style, marrying Moroder and Mayhem with a hint of the apocalypse manifesto of Skinny Puppy lurking in the middle distance. ‘Arms Of The Butcher’ is a strident anthem for a modern pandemonium, ‘Blue Light Hum’ meanwhile comes on like a robotic Neu! summoning end-credits euphoria. And most audaciously of all, ‘Without Song All Will Perish’ takes the urbane yet decadent sound of Voulez-Vous-era ABBA and reinvents it as a venomous disco Gotterdämerrung. True to form, like a brightly underlit disco dancefloor flashing out a warning of danger, the alchemical force of 6 is equal parts hedonistic rapture and dark revelation. For the past ten years, San Francisco rock / post-metal luminaries Deafheaven have built one of the most compelling discographies in metal, one that has challenged both the modus operandi and perceptions of the genre. Each critically acclaimed release widened the scope of their particular views of what rock and metal can be, capped by their most innovative album to date in 2018's Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. It all began though, with the 2010, four-song Demo released to Bandcamp by the bands founding members George Clarke and Kerry McCoy. Set to embark on a world tour earlier this year to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a band and the five albums released in that span, Deafheaven had to switch gears when COVID canceled all gatherings across the world, instead teaming with longtime producer Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden studios to bring the show they planned to perform in a studio sessions format. 10 Years Gone includes the first song they ever wrote in "Daedalus" from the first album Demo, which also serves as the first single released from this album, along with fan favorites like “Dream House” and “Vertigo” that have an added power in this setting.

To describe the last few years as a whirlwind for Belgian trio, Brutus, would be an understatement. Their monolithic sophomore release, Nest, which was released to overwhelming high acclaim in March of last year, has cemented the band as one of rock's most visceral and promising acts. Additionally, Brutus have quickly become a ‘Must See’ live band, led by drummer/vocalist Stefanie Mannaerts, whose massive and emotive vocals are mirrored only by her intense and dynamic drumming. Guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden and bassist Peter Mulders complete the magic circle with pervasive riffs, dynamic bass lines, and a ne balance between uneasy restraint and unrepentant aggression. AVAILABLE ON BLACK OR RED VINYL* The genesis of Ryan Hemsworth’s new project, Quarter-Life Crisis, can be traced all the way back to his childhood bedroom in Nova Scotia, where the producer spent the bulk of his high school years listening to emerging indie acts and playing guitar. Not loving the sound of his own voice and without a band, he eventually started making music on his laptop, which earned him accolades as he stepped out into electronic and club music scenes. His prolific output, paired with a voracious appetite for a wide range of genres and creation of his own label Secret Songs, has made Hemsworth a fixture since he released his debut solo album, Guilt Trips, in 2013. But now, Hemsworth’s trying his hand at something unexpected that is nonetheless close to his heart and origin story as a musician. Quarter-Life Crisis is a collaboration with various artists who’ve come to prominence over the past couple of years, many of whom got their start playing scrappy DIY shows. “This project has me in the process of going back to when I was a kid when I’d sit down and play guitar for hours and come up with melodies and chords by just messing around,” Hemsworth says. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for ages.” The self-titled debut EP will be released on December 4th, 2020 and features contributions from Frances Quinlan (Hop Along), Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Charlie Martin (Hovvdy), Yohuna, and Claud. It showcases Hemsworth in a new phase of his career, one that is perhaps a bit less indebted to the nightclub dance floor. “It’s always been a goal to mix, like, 25% electronic sounds and 75% live indie rock sounds,” he says. Collaboration is paramount to Hemsworth’s process, and though he produced all of the instrumentation on the album, he left the lyrics and intention of the song up to the contributors. The resulting collection shapeshifts from track-to-track, taking on new personalities as it moves between artists. “I think of my music-making process as ‘sneaking in as a fan,’” Hemsworth says. “Quarter-Life Crisis is just another way for me to work with artists whose music I really enjoy and listen to all the time .” Though Hemsworth has been a working musician for a decade now, Quarter-Life Crisis has felt like a wholly new experience. He recorded the tracks using live instruments, which he doesn’t typically do, and for many of his collaborators the shift to performing without a band, or even an instrument in their hands, was unfamiliar. For Quinlan, who sings on the arresting “Postcard from Spain,” this was one of the only times she’s made music with someone outside of her usual circles. “Recording with Ryan ended up being a really freeing experience to focus solely on vocal melody, to play with where I could take what was already there, already strong on its own,” she said. Quinlan’s experience overlapped with that of the other contributors. Going into the studio almost as a session artist gave Duffy the opportunity to alter their voice in a way they might not have considered with a Hand Habits song. “Meg asked me to make them sound like Travis Scott,” Hemsworth remembers, laughing. The hypnotic track, “Comfortable,” made Duffy think about “AI and cyborgs” and “souls disassociating from bodies.” “I kind of just freestyled until a theme started to swim up,” they said. For Hovvdy’s Martin, this was his first time ever writing lyrics to accompany another artist’s work. “It was really exciting to hear [Ryan] meet me in the middle style-wise. There are many hidden gems in the production of ‘Waterfall,’” Martin muses. “Lyrically the song explores a parallel I’ve been feeling lately: the difficulty of understanding and being understood and how sometimes that struggle almost mirrors the state of the planet. It’s like a downward spiraling feedback loop where any optimism feels like a triumph.” Working with musicians who largely fall into the category of “indie” gave Hemsworth the opportunity to revisit some of the artists who inspired him to become a musician in the first place. He cites bands like the Cardigans, Grandaddy, Bright Eyes, and Sparklehorse as being foundational to his writing process this time around. Quarter-Life Crisis a sharp turn away from his last project, 2019’s CIRCUS CIRCUS, which he made alongside the Japanese rap duo Yurufuwa Gang, but for Hemsworth, working in a wide array of genres and modes keeps him on his toes, and ultimately, keeps his career interesting. “Getting out of my comfort zone and bringing others into that process has always led to something really unique,” Hemsworth says. “As a producer, I really respond to other people’s ideas and whatever they can bring to a song. Being in a room with someone with a different outlook, or working remotely with them, I hopefully help facilitate something that feels new and exciting for both of us.”

IN 1988 FORMER ROLLING STONES guitarist Mick Taylor began what was to be a significant series of collaborations with L.A. based Carla Olson, first with their “Live at the Roxy” album Too Hot For Snakes, the centrepiece of which is an extended seven-minute performance of “Sway” included on this album. It was followed by Olson’s Within An Ace, which featured Taylor on seven songs. He appeared on three songs from Reap The Whirlwind and then again on Olson’s The Ring of Truth, on which he plays lead guitar on nine tracks, including a twelve-minute version of the song “Winter”. Further work by Olson and Taylor can be heard on the Olson-produced Barry Goldberg album Stoned Again. This is the best of their collaborations.

Henry Gray & Bob Corritore Cold Chills

Legendary piano master Henry Gray passed away on February 17, 2020 at age 95. In the 1950s and 60s, Henry was a crucial part of the Chicago blues scene. He played on famous records by Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Billy Boy Arnold, G.L. Crockett, Morris Pejoe and Dusty Brown. He was one the last of the Chicago originals. Henry Gray and harmonica ace Bob Corritore joined STREET DATE: 12/4/20 forces in 1996 with regular trips to Bob’s Phoenix nightclub, the Rhythm Rhythm and to the recording studio. These shows and sessions continued until 2018 when Henry was no longer able to fly per doctor’s orders. This collection provides a 14 song serving of some of the great sessions that these two collaborated on over a 22 year period! Dezron Douglas & Brandee Younger Force Majeure In March of 2020 bassist Dezron Douglas & harpist Brandee Younger were nestled in their apartment in Harlem, New York, not long after every live concert in the world was cancelled and most folks in the United States were forced to shelter in place for the covid lockdown. With all their gigs cancelled and their incomes strapped.. the two came up with an idea. They would host a live-stream performance from their living room, where they would perform classic tunes for friends and family to watch online, and folks could send them donations. They called it “Force Majeure: Brunch in the Crib with Brandee & Dezron,” the first part in homage to the ubiquitous contract clause that never seems to have any use (except all of sudden, c/o a covid-induced live music industry collapse). The immense popularity of their first performance roped them into doing it again, and again, until it eventually became a weekly ritual for Douglas, Younger, and their many friends and family who tuned in every Friday morning (ourselves included). Knowing the beautiful, natural sound they made in their living room would be as enjoyable (or more) as a record as it was through a social media stream… we mailed them a microphone to record themselves. What’s heard on this album, Force Majeure, is a collection of highlights from Douglas & Younger’s legendary lockdown livestream brunch sessions. It includes gorgeous interpretations of songs by Alice & John Coltrane, The Stylistics, The Jackson 5, Pharoah Sanders, Kate Bush, Sting, and The Carpenters… plus some solid gold nuggets of their banter between tunes. It’s an uplifting suite of real, soulful comfort music – a spiritual salve, emanating warmth from the hearth of a Harlem sanctuary.

Dezron Douglas & Brandee Younger are long time companions in life and in music. The two East Coast natives met early in life and have accompanied each other, personally and professionally, through their equally prolific careers. Douglas, a bassist who has established himself as a musician’s musician, is known to many for his work with Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, David Murray, and Keyon Harold. Younger, a harpist who has distinguished herself as one of the premiere voices in her field, is known for her work with Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden, Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, and Moses Sumney. To the day Douglas and Younger often accompany each other in many of the ensembles they lead, respectively. The two played together in sessions for Makaya McCraven’s 2018 release Universal Beings, on which they are both featured artists. RELEASE DATE: DEC. 4, 2020 The Steel Wheels are connecting a far-flung fanbase through shared experience and the revolutionary act of personal storytelling with their latest album, Everyone A Song, Vol. 1. A testament to joyful trust from supporters as well as tight musicianship and a strong DIY spirit within the band, Everyone A Song, Vol. 1 and an accompanying podcast, We Made You A Song, is an album for our times, written for and in collaboration with The Steel Wheels community. In the spring of 2020, The Steel Wheels were ready to continue their dynamic stage show on the road. Instead, the five band members found themselves spread across the country, isolated from one other and their listeners. They endeavored to bridge the distance the best they knew how: by creating music. Through a project they called Distance Together, the band gathered stories from fans and set them to song, relying on the perceptive wit and imaginative storytelling of Trent Wagler. Requests poured in as folks across the country wished to commemorate weddings, birthdays, the beginning of a life, the end of a selfless career. Each band member recorded parts in makeshift studios and passed audio and video files to the next Steel Wheel in line, relying on intuition and years of musical partnership to arrange the pieces in real time. Mixed and mastered by the band’s own Kevin Garcia, the songs took shape and took on lives of their own. Universal in their specificity, the songs reflect a desire for meaning and connection in a time when many things keep us apart. Luca Angels’ own Christian Bland and Jake Garcia. Former Black Angels member Nate Ryan also plays on the album. The music quickly became even more than just the sum of its parts: “Once I started playing with other people,” Maas says, “I realized that these songs were much bigger than I had anticipated.” Being released into a world that only seems to be getting scarier, Luca is a balm for the weary, partially because it doesn’t shy away from confronting tough subjects. But like Maas says, it’s not all bad. Not even close. And there will be a way forward, one way or another. “We’re all navigating weird waters right now,” Maas says. “I’m trying to just go wherever the flow of the water is going.”

Everything changed for Alex Maas in 2018. That was the year his first child was born—a happy and healthy baby boy—sending The Black Angels’ vocalist and multi-instrumentalist into a flurry of emotions he hadn’t felt before. There was the joy, of course, and the sheer awe that comes with creating new life. But to a lesser degree, there was also the fear: What world is his son going to grow up into, exactly? And how can Maas protect him from the dangers within it? “When you have a child, you face your own mortality in a lot of ways,” says Maas, a Texas native who’s lived in Austin for decades. “The world is definitely messed up, but there’s a lot of good in the world too. And that’s why the whole world isn’t on fire—parts of it are. I do believe that there’s more good than evil.” Maas and his wife named their son Luca, which means “bringer of light,” and when it came time for Maas to title his debut solo album, he knew there was only one choice. A swirl of meditative thoughts about the cosmic interplay of the universe, Luca is an album informally dedicated to its creator’s son, and directly inspired by the humbling reveries that were brought out by him. It’s also just a powerful work of gentle psychedelia, and a notable sonic departure from the heavy, pulse-raising sound that Maas and The Black Angels have become renowned for. “It’s a whole different part of my brain,” Maas says of the album, which was inspired by acts that vary from The Everly Brothers to Portishead. Opener “Slip Into” delivers extraterrestrial themes over a funky beat and an eerie synth line. (“Look how the sun kills stars / That’s just the way we are,” Maas sings.) “500 Dreams” is a lullabye for Luca that would have bowled people over in a Greenwich Village cafe circa 1961. “I wanted to go someplace musically that I’ve never gone before,” Maas considers. “Wu-Tang meets Leonard Cohen.” The project was a long time coming: Some of the songs date back almost a decade, when the idea of a solo album was still just a star in the sky. But once Maas committed to the project in earnest a few years ago, he started putting it together piece by piece, enlisting an all-star list of collaborators to record at Spaceflight Studios in Austin: Luca was co-produced with Maas by Jack White’s front of house engineer Brett Orrison, and features contributions from Widespread Panic drummer Duane Trucks, The Sword bassist Bryan Ritchie (on mellotron and bass), Jack White keys player Quincy McCrary (on strings and piano), vocalist Jazz Mills, Eels drummer Derek Brown, Golden Dawn Arkestra drummer Robb Kidd, and The Black

Recorded during COVID19 quarantine, this is free jazz performed and recorded one person at a time in isolation. Chad and WC didn’t even speak on the phone during this time. One track and WAV file at a time, they built up a selection of spontaneously improvised compositions befitting the times. WC Anderson was a long time student and protégé of the great drummer Alvin Fielder, who passed away in 2019. Chad Fowler composed pieces for and played alto saxophone in the improvisational group Dopolarians, which was Fielder’s last recording session.

Enclosures follows Craven Faults’ debut album Erratics & Unconformities. These 37 minutes of music are the start of the next journey. New terrain and more refined methods of travel. Dark clouds gathering. We’re out of the blocks quickly. German engineering carries us swiftly across the moors on a Saturday night rendezvous. Two almost identical mushroom shaped rocks are the destination. There’s evidence of previous rituals carried out. Two hours due north we go in search of the power source. Cascading. An experiment in performance over a fixed point. Tape loops recorded in 1967 at The Philadelphia College of Art. Woodwind purchased from a charity shop in Yeadon. The concept of work was forgotten. We’re back on the millstone grit of the Mid Craven Fault for an exercise in simplification. Familiar territory. Sometimes the theory isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and there’s still power in hammering a single note over two chords – a lesson learnt from the American South in the late 40s and early 50s and boiled down in the late 60s. Here the tensions of the early EPs return, with a focus on how human ‘progress’ has impacted and shaped the landscape. Craig Clouse - the Austin-based sage of the aurally unclean also known as Shit & Shine – has been busily channelling the interface between the surroundings and his own wayward muse into ‘Malibu Liquor Store’ – a lockdown-birthed psychic landscape mapped out in the first half of this turbulent year. The only expectation any relatively well-adjusted person should have of Shit & Shine remains the unexpected at this stage, with Clouse having released well over thirty records on multiple labels – just as comfortable with both bloody-minded electronic assaults and noiserock-driven dirge, as adept at kraut-hammered rhythmic mantras as dancefloor-friendly abstraction. ‘Malibu Liquor Store’ is none of these things exactly yet simultaneously flirts cheerily and irreverently with all of them. Always shot through with gleeful humour, this is a sonic world that recognises neither boundaries nor common sense.. Co-ordinates and reliable audial landmarks are rendered meaningless as the title cut comes on like a ‘60s Morricone chase sequence reassembled in new electronic shapes like lysergically-assisted Meccano. ‘Rat Snake’ sees the humid grooves of Can’s ‘Soon Over Babaluma’ bludgeoned into delirious submission. ‘Devil’s Backbone’ witnesses Buttholes-esque transgressions of the ‘80s beamed forward Terminator-style to a cyborg-ridden dystopia, and the glorious skeletal groove of album centrepiece ‘Hillbilly Moonshine’ meanwhile is nothing less than workout music for the damned – a relentless and pulsating soundtrack for a generation of ghouls mounting a legion of rowing machines along a metaphysical river Styx. 01.
