Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Neal Sugarman at Daptone Records Honestly not much, We want to make cool records that we love. We always say “make records like the records we love.” There is not much else actually.

How did you personally get started in the music industry? I started as a Sax Player, then when I started my own band I was suddenly Sax Player-Manager, and from there we started our own label; sax player, manager, label guy. . . When and where did the label begin? We started in 2001 in Brooklyn NYC. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? We thought it sounded cool. We also had a house band called the Dap-Kings How has the label changed since it started? Not much actually, we are still super DIY and to this day keep our own recording studio and a small staff of mostly the same people as when we first started. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. There is myself and my partner and Co-Founder Gabe Roth who is doing mostly record production. We now have two marketing/project managers, Nydia and Nick . . . Mikey who does all the manufacturing and all things relating to vinyl and merch manufacturing, and Andy who manages the online sales, shipping & receiving. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Making sure the staff were able to stay employed and healthy. Especially dealing with NYC infrastructure and trying to keep all the records moving from point A to B. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? I would say no, we are pretty world-wide. Regarding the artists we sign, we do tend to stay local, whether they come from Brooklyn, or now with a studio in Southern CA we started a label called Penrose, and that is pretty much the sound of SoCal. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Yes absolutely, we love soul music and that drives the base of everything we do. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? That is a tough one, and yes, very hard to choose, and it might change day to day depending on my mood, but I might say “The Frightnrs - Nothing More To Say.” I actually played sax on a lot of the records which sometimes gets in the way of my pure enjoyment, so for that reason I can enjoy the Frightnrs record on a different level, having only been involved in the production. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Probably having an artist hand paint Charles Bradley murals in major cities all over the country. It was just so amazing to see those go up. If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? Daptone Super Soul Review concerts all over the country on the back of a flatbed. Seems obvious, but I always felt our best assets were the live shows. We always used to struggle with logistics as the bands got more popular and the concert tickets got more expensive. I somehow always felt certain that folks that could have loved the music might have become alienated, so to get the live music in front of people would be my call. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We have done it all and personally I don’t like it. I like old school black. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Wait what? How would you describe the average fan of the label? Smart and one who has discerning taste. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Every industry needs to take a stance and do what they can to not only set an example but think about the next generation. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We recently started Wick Records for rock music, then Penrose for Low Rider type slow soul music. We always talked about a comedy label called either Har-D-Har Records or Punch Line. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? Great Records All The Time!

IDLES

CRAWLER

S T R E E T D AT E - 11/12/21

OVERVIEW IDLES return with their new album “CRAWLER” – an album of reflection and healing amid a worldwide pandemic that stretched the planet’s collective mental and physical health to the breaking point. Frontman Joe Talbot says, “We want people who’ve gone through trauma, heartbreak, and loss to feel like they’re not alone, and also how it is possible to reclaim joy from those experiences.” IDLES albums have always been anchored by these overarching themes, but the ability of the band to juxtapose beauty and rage with humor and drama has never felt more satisfying than on “CRAWLER.” These stories are vividly brought to life through IDLES’ most soul-stirring music to date, recorded with co-producer Kenny Beats (Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs). There are, of course, numerous moments that will inspire absolute mayhem in a packed concert venue, but there are also fresh textures and experiments that push IDLES into thrilling new territory. “I don’t really see us as a ‘rock band’ and working with Kenny [Beats] freed us of the idea of genre,” Talbot enthuses. “On this album, our dissolution of ego was helped by Kenny’s humble nature and willingness to learn. He has boundless passion for making the best song possible. Not the best ‘rock’ song — the best song possible.” He continues, “It was writing selfishly that helped make it possible. Reflecting. Telling my own story. Not trying to tell everyone else’s story. Not trying to fix the world — just talking about how I am fixing mine.”

Irreversible Entanglements Open The Gates Open The Gates is Philadelphia-based free jazz collective IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS’s third full length album (and first double LP length album). Recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, across 73 minutes of music the band – featuring Camae Ayewa aka Moor Mother, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro & drummer Tcheser Holmes (who released their duo debut Heritage of the Invisible II on International Anthem last year), saxophonist Keir Neuringer, and bassist Luke Stewart – supplement their raw, organic punk-jazz sound with firsttime experiments with electronics and synthesizers. “Irreversible Entanglements’ fearless music takes to task the police, American politics, capitalism, and racism.” – The Nation "The jazz ensemble evokes our American topography, both physically and psychologically, by capturing what’s in the news and what’s underneath that surface.” – Pitchfork

• 1ST PRESSING CLEAR VINYL • FOLLOW-UP TO “HOW A FANTASY WILL KILL US ALL” (2018) • FORMERLY OF TU FAWNING (City Slang) From the earliest, unknowing days of the pandemic sprang Corrina Repp’s seventh solo album Island. Resonant and resolute, the album is suffused with peaceful energy, touching on universal themes while existing as a document of Corrina’s inner life during that time. Contemplating solitude amidst isolation with openness and radiant assurance, Island seems to make the claim that to be alone is not always to be lonely. In fact, it can be empowering. For as much as these songs are marked with a melancholic touch, they are also infused with the patient optimism that can only come from years spent pursuing one’s artistic passions, devoted to a life lived on one’s own terms. Island marks Corrina’s first time writing and recording an entire album by herself, in her own home, without an engineer or the spoils of a studio at hand. Hyper-focused due to these limits, she drew on her natural strengths of voice and guitar, resulting in songs even more markedly intimate than her previous work. The music of Island spans everything from haunting folk to exploratory guitar to cinematic pop, with Corrina’s voice and instrument taking turns sharing center stage. In Corrina’s sparse yet emotive way, Island calmly presents a score for our everyday lives that is as elegant as it is frank in both form and substance.

VOL. 2 NO. 1—MSG SEPTEMBER ’90 (2-CD Set) STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 12, 2021 The best of three Madison Square Garden shows (September 1820, 1990) on a two-CD set? Yes, please! Actually, Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 1 is almost all drawn from the 19th and 20th, but you don’t want to miss the September 18th encore performance of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” an especially moving rendition given keyboardist Brent Mydland’s death two months earlier. This is the tour when both ex-Tubes member Vince Welnick (on electric keyboards) and Bruce Hornsby (on grand piano) ably stepped into the gap left by Mydland, and propelled the band to new heights. A rare ‘90s “Dark Star,” a second set “Let It Grow” that goes off in new and fascinating directions… though Dick’s Picks Vol. 9 came from the same set of MSG shows (September 16, to be exact), many folks feel these dates were superior. GRATEFUL DEAD:

Dick’s Picks Vol. 15—Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ 9/3/77 (3-CD Set) 1977 was a great year of touring for the Dead, and it’s been the source of some of the most acclaimed live recordings the band has released (the complete set of June Winterland shows comes to mind, as do Dick’s Picks Vols. 34 & 29). This Pick keeps the streak going, despite the fact that this was the first concert the band had played in almost three months, and that it took place in front of a crowd estimated at over 100,000! It was also the first show after the release of Terrapin Station, and several numbers (the title track, “Samson and Delilah” and “Estimated Prophet,” which segues into a really unusual and stellar “Eyes of the World”) surface from the album. “The Music Never Stopped,” “Peggy-O,” “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and “He’s Gone” are all given what could be characterized as definitive renditions as well, and the band closes the night by playing “Truckin’” for the first time in two years before the “Terrapin Station” encore. It’s just one more miraculous night from the Grateful Dead!

(2-CD Set) This Dick’s Picks volume, which presents excerpts of the Dead’s March 23, 1974 show at the Cow Palace, is not only historic but a hot show to boot! First, the history: this concert marked the first appearance of the famous (or infamous, depending on which Deadhead you ask) Wall of Sound concert PA, with the crystal-clear sound to show for it; it also features the debut of two songs, “Cassidy” and “Scarlet Begonias,” that were to become staples of the band’s repertoire. As for the quality of the performance, for many the clear highlight will be the “Playing in the Band/ Uncle John’s Band/Morning Dew/Uncle John’s Band/ Playing in the Band” medley (making its third and final appearance in a set list), which on this occasion stretched its “Playing in the Band” segments almost to their breaking point. JON HOPKINS

MUSIC FOR PSYCHEDELIC THERAPY OVERVIEW Domino are proud to present Music For Psychedelic Therapy, the new album from Jon Hopkins.

"Immunity and Singularity were sister albums. I feel I explored that sound as much as I could. Next, I wanted to make something that faced the opposite direction, something far away from a cosmic party or a set of festival bangers. Something looking inwards, something egoless, with no attempts made to "fit in”. Something made with total, raw honesty. It felt like time for a reset, to wait for music to appear from a different place. That place ended up being a cave in Ecuador, where I went on a life-changing creative expedition in 2018.

What grew from this experience is an album with no beats, not one drum sound, something that is closer to a classical symphony than a dance / electronica record. Something that is more like having an experience than listening to a piece of music. Maybe something far more emotionally honest than I had been comfortable making before - a merging of music, nature and my own desire to heal. The freedom from traditional rhythmic structures unlocked so much - it felt like I was free to explore a new form of rhythm, one that you discover when you just allow things to flow without letting yourself get in the way. This feels like the album I have spent my whole life making, and simultaneously like it just appeared out of nowhere. The bulk of it was recorded in something of a trance between January and May 2021, through the darkest winter I can remember. It brought me light and purpose, and seemed to flow through me without obstruction, in a way I have never experienced before." Music For Psychedelic Therapy is not ambient, classical or drone but has elements of all three. For me it’s a place as much as it is a sound. It works for the sober mind, but it takes on a new dimension entirely when brought into a psychedelic ceremony. In my own psychedelic explorations testing this music, I found a quote I had read would keep coming to mind. “Music is liquid architecture, architecture is frozen music”. I love this idea of music as something you inhabit, something that works on you energetically. In fact, it was while in that state that the title appeared to me. Psychedelic-assisted therapies are moving into legality across the world, and yet it feels like no one is talking about the music. but the music is as important as the medicine. “Ayahuasca is driven by sound, by song, by whistling. And its ability to transform sound, including vocal sound, into the visual spectrum indicates that some kind of information processing membrane or boundary is being overcome by the pharmacology of this stuff. And things normally experienced as acoustic become visibly beheld, and it's quite spectacular.” Terence McKenna

Music For Psychedelic Therapy sounds best played in one sitting, lying down in the dark.

NEW 2 CD SET, A COMBINATION OF RARITIES, HITS & PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED LIVE RECORDINGS RANKED #22 ON ROLLING STONE’S LIST OF “100 GREATEST GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME” INDUCTED INTO THE BLUES HALL OF FAME & ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ichael Bloomfield was one of America’s first great white blues guitarists, earning his reputation on the strength of his work in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. His expressive, fluid solo lines and prodigious technique graced many other projects — most notably Bob Dylan’s earliest electric forays — and he also pursued a solo career, with variable results. Uncomfortable with the reverential treatment afforded a guitar hero, Bloomfield tended to shy away from the spotlight after spending just a few years in it; he maintained a lower-visibility career during the ‘70s due to his distaste for fame and his worsening drug problems, which claimed his life in 1981. During the late ‘70s, Bloomfield recorded for several smaller labels (including Takoma), usually in acoustic settings, authentic and personal. Disc 2 features a previously unreleased 1971 concert from the archives. This is electric Bloomfield at his best.

FAIRY TALE / ROCKS / GROUP MEDITATION / SUMMER CLOUDS / MUTATION MU TATION / OIL TANKERS / BIBLICAL BAND / PAPYRUS OF ANI / EASY TO LOVE / PROCESSION / WONO SARI / ROCK PROGRAM / CHIPLAND LIQUIDS / NEW WAVE ROCK / FAR VIEW Far View is a compilation of tracks from Joel Vandroogenbroeck’s series of library music broeck releases for the Coloursound label — a uniquely trippy catalog of music vignettes long overdue for their day in the library music sun, remastered from the original analog reels! The late Joel Vandroogenbroeck was among that rare breed of musician who defy all categorization, using music conventions to explore the far reaches of human and cosmic consciousness. After passing through the jazz and rock worlds from the 1950s through the 70s, Joel found new outlets for his expansive vision in the 80s with the Swiss library music label Coloursound. Far View draws tracks from these releases, which form a unique entry in the genre of library music. For the uninitiated, this is just one way to begin a brilliant musical trip through Vandroogenbroeck’s undersung career. eck A musical prodigy from youth, Joel arrived at Brussels’ classical Music Conservatory in the early 50s, but his studies were curtailed by the revelation of jazz. Soon, Joel was touring in groups around Europe and beyond with luminaries like Eje Thelin, Thelin Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer and Zoot Sims. Getz Sims As time passed, his musical consciousness continued to expand: time spent in Africa sparked a deep exploration of the music of the Middle East. The new rock sounds from England, like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, Hendrix were mind-blowing. And from Germany

came the krautrockers, with something completely else again. Vibing on the eclectic energies of the day, Vandroogenbroeck formed Brainticket, whose approach to compoBrainticket sition fused jazz, rock, and a mélange of global musical traditions, combining a western rhythm section and analog synthesizers with an astonishing array of acoustic instruments; ethnic flutes, sitar, harp, kalimba and all manner of percussion. Steeped in diverse approaches of playing and listening, Brainticket drew from prog rock and psych, traditional sounds and minimalist music, all of which passed through their hands like the tributaries that formed the basis of what would soon be known as New Age music. In the late 1970s, Vandroogenbroeck began composing for sound libraries, with recordings to be used as underlay music in films, radio and tele-

vision. Gunter Greffenius’ Greffenius Coloursound Library was formed in 1979 with an inclusive vision of music, including experimental, progressive rock, and some of the earliest examples of ambient music — styles not well represented in other libraries. Coloursound gave Joel the freedom to create music in any style or genre, and over the next decadeplus, he embarked on a musical journey that is unmatched anywhere in the world of library music. Working under the pseudonyms VDB VDB, Joel Joel, and Eric Vann, Vann his output on Coloursound is some of his most sublime and otherworldly — ranging from dark electronics to imagined music of the ancient past to ethereal ambient sounds of the future, which makes sense, as Joel Joel’s records were always ahead and in and out of their time. Joel Vandroogenbroeck passed away in December 2019, while work was being done assembling this collection. Curated by David Hollander, Hollander whose Unique Sounds album and book of the same name delightfully explore the library music world, Far View draws from ten of Joel Joel’s Coloursound albums with lovely cohesion. Featuring brilliantly remastered sound, liner notes from David Hollander, Hollander album art designed by Robert Beatty and reproductions of the Coloursound album jackets, Far View is an entry point to Joel Vandroogenbroek’s Vandroogenbroek mind-bending body of work — sonic soma to expand your consciousness and vibrate with the cosmos.

HANNA PK

Blues All Over My Shoes Produced by and Featuring KENNY NEAL

Hanna PK is an accomplished pianist, soulful vocalist, talented songwriter and vibrant performer, born and raised in South Korea, currently residing in Rochester, NY. Her first Booga Music/VizzTone release, produced by internationally acclaimed bluesman Kenny Neal in his Baton Rouge, Louisiana studio, presents what Hanna has developed and honed over years in the woodshed and nights gigging with her band.

Hanna has packed the album with 10 originals, with just one cover song – yet no two songs are alike. Neal STREET DATE: really wanted to focus this album on PK and her songs, showcasing her ability to lead a band with her roaring keyboard and powerful voice. Neal also performs on a few tracks, which is a special treat. As is the case with all true blues performers, Hanna PK works from and in the tradition of the music while bringing her own stamp of creativity and originality to it.

“I think this album is not only a blues album but also catches Hanna’s style. She’s got her own ideas, and I think this album is catching that, and that’s what I like about it.” —Kenny Neal

COLDSTREAM is the sophomore album from Tehran-based electronic music producer Hesam Ohadi's Idlefon project. The album is his first for Oakland-based emotive experimental label n5MD, and it finds Ohadi taking inspiration from Adam Curtis' Oh Dearism shorts reflecting on the globes' modern-day state of turmoil. As of late, n5MD has focused more on harboring artists with a more visceral take on ambient, eschewing background music or music for concentration or respite for ambient that requires deep listening. COLDSTREAM is another such fibrous collection. Ohadi utilizes dark ambient, drone, glitch, and even industrial motifs to aid Idlefon's grainy ideology. COLDSTREAM is boundless, with moments of tension that swirl in and out of view, making it a perfectly ascending aural view of our ever declining society. COLDSTREAM is out November 12th on limited edition dark green with black marble vinyl.

Future Memories is the new album from New York-based German drummer and composer Mareike Wiening, featuring her longstanding band that includes saxophonist Rich Perry, pianist Glenn Zaleski, guitarist Alex Goodman, and bassist Johannes Felscher. Recorded in one day in the midst of an extensive tour, the album captures the live group energy and cohesion that only comes from playing together regularly. Featuring eight of Wiening’s originals inspired by her band members, the compositions are emotional, rhythmical and most importantly, always lyrical. The music was captured in January 2020, just before the first pandemic lockdown, and the album’s title encapsulates Mareike’s feelings: the unexpected value of our future interweaves with various levels of past experiences, memories and the unknown. Balancing great compositions with soaring solo explorations, this is exciting, thoughtful, and engaging creative jazz.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Colin’s opus with a double LP expanded edition! The second LP, itself titled That Same Year, features beautifully sparse demo versions of three songs from One Year plus completely unheard compositions that give a deeper introspective look into that time in his life. One Year is an album that somehow manages to be both lush and sparse at the same time and always deeply intimate. That Same Year finds a way to bring the listening experience to a deeper level of intimacy. In addition to penning most of the album, Colin also penned the liner notes that fill the gatefold jacket along with unseen photos from that year. "Fifty years on, there’s a dream like quality to my memories of One Year. Almost seeming like another lifetime, a time of innocence and naivety and a time when anything seemed possible...and now all the principle performers are assembled and as the music plays I start to drift and so many of the ghosts who hide inside the secrets of this album suddenly come alive and yesterday becomes today, again!" - Colin Blunstone (2021)

Jackie Mittoo is one of the defining figureheads of reggae music! From forming The Skatalites, at age 15, alongside Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook and others, to his work as writer, arranger, producer at Studio One records during the sixties, writing and playing for artists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and The Heptones (to name a few), to his career as a solo artist as well as leader of bands such as The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and The Sound Dimension, Jackie Mittoo is at the heart of reggae music. He was one of the instigators of Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. In the seventies, DJ music and Dancehall were based upon classic rhythms of the sixties, many using the instrumental tracks that Jackie Mittoo created at Studio One at this time.

Side 2 1. Hot Tamale 2. Reggae Rock 3. Oboe Side 3 1. Juice Box 2. Summer Breeze 3. P. Cafe 4. Henry The Great

Side 4 1. Killer Diller 2. Wall Street 3. Darker Shade Of Black

Jackie Mittoo is as much an icon of Reggae as he is to fans of Funk music. He is without doubt the funkiest keyboard player ever to come out of Jamaica!

Soul Jazz Records Presents

DEUTSCHE ELEKTRONISCHE MUSIK 2 SPECIAL BOX Edition 19th November 2021

Deutsche Elektronische Musik: "A near-definitive guide to some of the world's most extraordinary music." ***** The Guardian This album is the rarest of Soul Jazz’s Deutsche Elektronische Musik series! Out-of print since its initial release over 8 years ago and not reissued, it features a monster 2 and ahalf hours of music! Very Limited Edition Super Deluxe Heavyweight Box Collectors’ Edition (includes 4 LP + Insert + 2 Art prints + individual inners + download) + excellent extensive sleevenotes (by David Stubbs, writer for Wire/Guardian and author of the definitive ‘Krautrock’ book) + lots of exclusive photos. This is a one-off pressing of 2,000 copies worldwide. Includes seminal German groups: Can, Faust, Neu, Amon Düül II as well as a host of lesser known groups and artists such as Agitation Free, Bröselmaschine, Niagara and many more! And as well as the original pioneers, Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2 also features many of the second wave of German electronic artists and groups from the late 70s and early 80s (DAF, Asmus Tietchens, Rolf Trostel) who successfully connected new wave, minimal synth and a European post-punk avantgardism with the earlier more established Krautrock pioneers who began at the start of the 70s. The first seeds of German rock and experimental electronic music were planted in 1968, as students and workers in Paris, Prague, Mexico and throughout the world demonstrated against mainstream society, the war in Vietnam, imperialism and bourgeois values. The birth of a counterculture, drug experimentation and social change expanded musical worlds. Germany experienced its own cultural revolution fuelled by these worldwide student and worker revolts and by a generation’s desire to rid itself of the guilt of war. Many German youth turning their back on mainstream society. From the opening of the first collective/cooperative in 1967, Commune 1, in Berlin, to the formation of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and the bombings, kidnappings and killings of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (RAF), young Germans sought out new values and a lifestyle outside of ‘the system’. These cooperative and communal experiences led to a number of new radical German bands including Amon Düül II, Faust and Can. Many artists and musicians believed a complete rejection of everything musically that had gone before was also necessary in order to build a new identity for German culture. At this time German music meant ‘schlager’ music – insipid pop music that hardly confronted the country’s recent historical events. Holger Czukay and Irmin Schmidt of Can studied music under the radical avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and Conrad Schnitzler studied art under the conceptual artist Joseph Beuys. German rock groups were as interested in musique concrète and serial composition as they were in the psychedelia of Pink Floyd or the rock, soul and jazz music played by resident American forces. From this beginning German rock music began an evolutionary journey of experimentation. Electronic music became a pathway to notions of space and the cosmos. Conversely, the emergence of communal living led to a number of musicians setting up live/work spaces in rural areas and developing a ‘pastoral’ outlook, with musical ideas engaged closely with nature. German electronic music, kosmische music, cosmic rock, space music. The objectives were to create new music, ‘free’ from the past. A music that gave seed out of the cultural ‘nothingness’ that young Germans felt as a consequence of Germany’s role in the Second World War. A generation who grew up stifled by the recent history of Nazi atrocities, the guilt of their parents’ generation and their disillusionment at the reintegration of old Nazis into mainstream society.

The Salvation Army went on to record an LP for Frontier and soon underwent changes, including a new name, The Three O’Clock, and a new line-up, with Quercio remaining the only member of both bands. The Three O’Clock were one of the pillars of L.A.’s Paisley Underground scene, which also included The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and Rain Parade. The original “Mind Gardens” 45 is rare and highly collectible. This 40th anniversary celebrates the era by including all songs recorded during these sessions, as well as liner notes from Michael Quercio, recalling that time and how important this release was to him at the time and now.

WEAKENED FRIENDS QUITTER

Portland, Maine indie rock trio Weakened Friends dive into the honest truth of being a working musician on their new LP, Quitter, reflecting on lost friendships and self-worth swallowed up by burnout. Songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist Sonia Sturino is supported by Annie Hoffman (bass/vocals) and Adam Hand (drums), filling out a mature and emotive sound. Though the record acknowledges a perpetual state of arrested development that comes with being a musician, the band is anything but stagnant musically. Opening themselves up to ideas outside the constraints of their slacker rock sound, Weakened Friends puts the full force of their creative ambition into “Quitter”. Inspired by watching peers go above and beyond what is expected of them, the band sought to explore each song’s fullest potential, with their most extensive pre-production and arrangement work to date. Incorporating banjo, pedal steel, horns, extensive synth arrangement and a number of non-instrumental sounds such as ovens and camera flashes, Weakened Friends expand on their universe of sounds on their new LP. Quitter bears Sturino’s vulnerabilities and insecurities about her role in the music world loudly and proudly, but in the confident and ambitious sounds that couch those fears, Weakened Friends prove their worth as a vital and exciting rock band.

Salah Ragab & The Cairo Jazz Band - Egypt Strut “One of the most unique and dramatic albums in all of global jazz music.” Francis Gooding, The Wire Strut present the 1973 Egyptian jazz classic, 'Egypt Strut' by Salah Ragab and Cairo Jazz Band. Inspired by a concert in Cairo by Randy Weston in 1967 encouraging PanAfrican unity, drummer Ragab, Eduard “Edu” Vizvari, a Czech jazz musician, and Hartmut Geerken of Goethe Institut vowed to create Egypt's first jazz big band. Following the Arab-Israeli war, Ragab became a Major in the Egyptian army and had unparalleled access to the military's 3000 musicians spanning Upper and Lower Egypt, along with a wide range of instruments. Part of the barracks were christened the Jazz House and, following a crash course in jazz history by Geerken, the Cairo Jazz Band was born, playing their first concert at Ewart Memorial Hall at the American University in 1969. Further inspired by Sun Ra & His Arkestra's first visit to Egypt in 1971, Ragab recorded an album for the Egyptian Ministry Of Culture a year later, entitled ‘Egyptian Jazz’, later released as 'Egypt Strut', a perfect fusion of jazz with Arabic modes with tracks referencing Islamic festivals, Egyptian landmarks and friends and family dear to Ragab. The Wire’s Francis Gooding summarises the album as “esoteric African American Egyptianism and radically spiritualised modal jazz taken up by Ragab as the tool for a form of mystical Egyptian nationalism – a triumphalist military jazz, angled in Ra-like fashion towards the Gods of the New Kingdom.” The vinyl album is released in its original Prism Music Unit artwork and is packaged with the original house bag designs. CD version includes extra unreleased tracks and a 24 page booklet featuring unseen photos and extensive liner notes by Francis Gooding (The Wire)

MUSIC FOR THE SPIRIT

DOMINIK EULBERG AVICHROM 11.19.2021 For the artist Dominik Eulberg, nature has always been a source of inspiration, a place of strength and retreat. Since the beginning of his now 28-year career, he has paid homage to it in his works, using all the stages offered to him to celebrate its beauty and diversity. Now the studied conservationist is releasing his sixth album: Avichrom. This artificial word means "bird colours". For this album Eulberg dedicates himself to the colours in the plumage of birds, eleven of whose exuberant variety have made it into the German names of native bird species, from Grünfink (Green Finch), Goldregenpfeifer (Golden Plover) and Blaumeise (Blue Tit) to Purpurreiher (Purple Heron) and Schwarzhalstaucher (Black-necked Grebe). They serve as guides on his musical expedition into ornithology. "In the end, making music is nothing more than selecting from an infinite number of options," he says, "and in this respect the birds helped me find a common thread in the midst of all these possibilities. The sketches for the songs were created during two intensive weeks in the Corona-Lockdown winter and were elaborated, arranged and mixed by him in the months that followed. Eulberg used the enforced break from performing at festivals and in clubs to fervently hone the details. The result is Avichrom, an album that is touching the very first time you listen to it, yet reveals new details every time you listen to it again. Similar to a walk through nature, ever new structures, ever different elaborate ramifications reveal themselves to those who listen carefully: only with time does the true beauty, the sublime complexity reveal itself. A colourful, life-affirming album that takes you on a long journey, where you don't talk much, but let yourself be touched by what you encounter.

GCOM - E2-XO Tom Middleton is focused on the future in many ways. His new alias GCOM is an all-new, 21st century redesign of his original Global Communication concept and collaboration with Mark Pritchard. The new album E2-XO is some of the most advanced music he has ever made, both in sound and concept. signifying a technological, creative and philosophical evolution into the new era; from planetary communication and understanding to Galactic Communication. A decade in the making, inspired by themes surrounding anthropocene humankind’s impact on climate, what we’re doing about it, conscious AI, and the acceleration for interplanetary travel beyond the Moon, to Mars, and eventually intergalactic in search of potentially habitable exoplanets, the story of the hunt for Earth 2.0. As he continues to expand his sonic horizons, Tom has been concurrently exploring visionary applications of astrophysics, AI, cosmology, cube-sats and rocket science, alongside more esoteric ideas about the nature of the Universe and the human condition. Previously his interest in sleep science led Tom to expanding the instinctively beautiful ambience of classic Global Communication into something tailored to helping people with sleep problems using brainwave entrainment; scoring an iTunes top ten album with his Sleep Better project, a record that is measurably therapeutic in the truest sense, and has spawned many projects focused on supporting human problems like anxiety, stress, sleep disruption and human performance using sound design for wellness, but with no loss of brilliance in terms of musicality. E2-XO is an audio movie, a space opera, a psychic investigation of the human mind in space. It is a fully immersive experience, with all the dynamics that such an imagination-stretching voyage implies. Listeners will hear echoes of Tom’s whole creative life; from his childhood absorbing Vangelis and Tomita, through the white heat of discovery alongside Richard D James, Matthew Herbert and friends, right through to his collaborations with technological innovators today and his current research into neuroscience and sound design. E2-XO acknowledges the past, but make no mistake whatsoever: This is the future…

Kansas Smitty’s Plunderphonia

Album 19th Albumout: out:November October 29th

a division of !K7 Music

On this essential new collection of forward-looking jazz reinterpretations, Kansas Smitty's bandleader Giacomo Smith delves deep into the catalogues of celebrated yet often overlooked artists that inspire his work with Kansas Smitty's; Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbeck, even Maurice Ravel. Created for the ‘Plunderphonia’ series for 7K!, itself a reinterpretation of the acclaimed !K7 DJ-Kicks series, the album owes as much to Giacomo's decade of living and playing in London as it does to the forefathers of jazz that he is paying homage to here. The release will be marked with a show for the London Jazz Festival at Earth in Hackney on 20th November.

heard with contemporary ears, sonically of our times. This is not a straight up covers LP. Giacomo, who is joined by a fresh group musicians that connects all corners of the London contemporary jazz landscape, from Dylan Jones of Ezra Collective to rising star Jaz Kayser, sees his compositions here more aligned to hip hop mindset, starting with “samples'' and turning them into something completely new.

Themes and melodies from compositions dating back to the 1920s have been adapted, inverted, transformed, and plunderized to make a collection of tunes that are undoubtedly jazz and when

"I didn’t choose the part of the song that sounds the coolest, I chose the parts of the song that were a reflection of where I believe the soul of the song was.” explains Giacomo. “The parts that I tried to adapt and sample for this new band were the parts that they would sound the best on. The far reaching vision of this record is to try to be as bold as Jelly Roll was in his composing and to rise to the occasion”

Is the Promise kept? Is the Promise broken? Is the Promise real? While their first two albums Ghost Box and High Line, explored panoramas that evoked the American West as well as the cosmic beyond, Promise, the third and latest album by SUSS on Northern Spy Records, takes a more personal journey that maps out the rocky terrain of the American dream. Writing, recording and mixing during the pandemic quarantine, the members of SUSS used their music to come to grips with concepts such as promise and hope and what they could still mean in this day and age. Drawing on influences from their younger years, SUSS has created music that evokes early psychedelic Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and the seminal soundtrack work of John Barry. The results, which they call “pastoral psychedelicism,” is a music that is beautiful, haunting and challenging. The NYC quartet, which includes Bob Holmes, Pat Irwin, Gary Leib and Jonathan Gregg, creates sonic landscapes using a combination of pedal steel, baritone guitar, ebow, harmonium, synths, and loops. “Their incredible country/ambient hybrid is nothing short of peerless… A truly essential 2020 record.” - PopMatters “A meditative, but adventurously immersive listen.” -Aquarium Drunkard “SUSS’ last two albums were more sweeping and cinematic, Promise is more grounded, anchored in chord progressions and repeated motifs.” -Stereogum

Body/Dilloway/Head self-titled LP-TLR-135

Format: LP (with download) UPC: 711574920211

This record is the most head-on excavation of temporal fallibility that I’ve heard in a very, very long time. Aaron Dilloway operates as a solo artist, but collaborates ceaselessly, whether as a former member of Wolf Eyes or in innumerable other contexts. Body/Head is the duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace. Nace has charted an iconoclastic trajectory as a freewheeling improviser and composer on his own and in group settings. Gordon, best known as a member of Sonic Youth, was always active outside that band during its existence and continues to expand her tireless horizons since its dissolution. To put it plain, on Body/Dilloway/Head there are guitars and vocals and magnetic tape and amplification. These elements interact with the aid of effects machines. But the technical aspects of how it was crafted matter not a whit. Plus, any attempt to describe the nature of this particular collaboration is fraught. It’s impossible to say where lines might get drawn, because there simply aren’t any. Even the boundaries between processing and playing are erased. Every time it sounds like Aaron Dilloway processing Body/Head, you blink or turn your head and it sounds like Body/Head playing Aaron Dilloway. You can sift back through the tributaries of this formidable collective discography and be just as flummoxed. The similarities and the distinctions are endless. It’s impossible to tell where one stops and the other starts. The shifts in the pieces can seem to come out of nowhere. Over and over one gets the sense that the music is trying to wake itself from a dream. Gordon and Nace’s guitars churn against Dilloway’s serpentine loops and squealing treatments. The components entwine like brambles, crawling and building, moving even when seeming to rest. It starts with a low hum and some garbled murmurings. Birth should have been like that, you might find yourself thinking. It threatens to start. It halts. It holds. It hovers. It lurches. Dilloway’s hand looms large, and after a while, the familiar pulse of Nace and Gordon’s guitars enters, and as soon as you start to orient yourself, you’re lost again. The atmospheres melt into one another. The piece arcs slowly. Plateaus and vistas. This is the side-long lead-off, “Body/Erase.” Flip the record over. “Goin’ Down” is almost plaintive in feel, yet mathematical in structure. There’s something about the way it occurs in time. There’s a place somewhere in the brain (mine, at least) where the wide open vistas of desert highways and the compulsive interior pressure of insomniac experience meet and twirl and dance and laugh and shudder. It’s exhausting and exhilarating, familiar and strange, terrifying and comforting, but it’s the only place I’ve ever been that seems like a deity might be nearby, so it’s cool to find a track that evokes that. “Secret Cuts” starts off like a sentient machine breathing heavily in the summer heat, and then begins to subsume itself many times over. Fragments of Gordon’s vocals flutter in and out, traversing blurred clouds. Amp noise gurgles. Guitar loops stutter. The piece builds to a shimmering mirage, then nose-dives into still black waters and shorts out like a downed power line. If disquieting drama appeals to you, the notion has perhaps here reached its sonic peak. One of this music’s many pleasures is the inability to identify specific emotions within it, despite the undeniable emotional responses it elicits. These are memories of moods, nascent feelings we haven’t grown into yet. This record is as disorienting a listening experience as you’re likely to encounter these days, and in a world this fucked up, that’s really saying something. Handle with care. SALES POINTS - The debut album resulting from Body/Head (the duo of Kim Gordon [Sonic Youth, solo] and Bill Nace) handing over previously unreleased studio sessions to Aaron Dilloway (solo, formerly of Wolf Eyes) for processing and editing. The result is unmistakably a synthesis of all of their sounds and styles, a sum that makes sense and leaves you wondering “how didn’t this happen sooner?” Prior Body/Head titles on Matador and Feeding Tube. Prior Dilloway titles on Hanson and many others. - Limited edition (approximately 1000 copies) 140g black vinyl LP housed within a matte tip-on jacket with full color insert both bearing new collage artwork by Bill Nace (with multi-format Bandcampenabled download). Let The Morning Come STREET DATE: DATE: 19 12 NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2021 LABEL: MEMPHIS INDUSTRIES 2020 was supposed to be Wästberg’s big year. Still riding high from the release of his second album as sir Was –2019’s Holding On To A Dream – the Swedish multi-instrumentalist was booked to open for Little Dragon across Europe and the US. When the tour was cancelled due to COVID, he decided to channel all his energies into writing new music instead, but in August of 2020, he received some life-changing news. Tests revealed he carried the gene for a rare, hereditary condition causing multiple strokes.

Track list: 1. Hope We’ll Make It Through 2. I Need A Minute 3. Spend A Lifetime 4. Before The Morning Comes 5. One Day 6. I Don’t Think We Should Wait 7. Waiting For The Weekend 8. You Float 9. I Wanna Feel Like That 10. Time To Let It Out

“At first I got very sad and scared,” says Joel of the devastating diagnosis. “But at the same time, it was like all the other worries I carried suddenly didn't matter. I just got this very intense feeling of being alive.” This dichotomy lies at the heart of his beautifully bittersweet third LP. Meditating on love, growth, self-acceptance, forgiveness, mortality and the passing of time, Let The Morning Come, which arrives selfproduced by Joel, contains his most candid writing to date. And yet, for all the heartache that comes with being cruelly confronted with one’s own mortality, the prevailing impression Wästberg leaves listeners with is one of hope, resulting in a collection that is lifeaffirming in the very truest sense. The new record is the latest step in his evolution as an artist renowned for conjuring dreamy melodies from unconventional arrangements. Drawing on the luxurious sounds of Marvin Gaye’s masterpiece What’s Going On, and utilising an eclectic palette that encompasses complex polyrhythms, Medieval recorder harmonies, and the languid sigh of a second hand Hammond organ, Wästberg sought to “condense” his songwriting, with the aim of evoking the immediacy of the music of his youth. Lyrically too, time is of the essence, as displayed in song titles like ‘Waiting For the Weekend’, ‘Before The Morning Comes’, ‘I Don’t Think We Should Wait’ and ‘Time To Let It Out.’ This palpable sense of a race against time is heightened by the fact he suffered a stroke in January of this year, when the album was “99% complete.” Now thankfully recovered, the experience has only strengthened his resolve to grasp every possible opportunity and to live life authentically and without fear, ideas which ultimately permeate the album. sir Was, praised initially by Stones Throw Records founder, Peanut Butter Wolf, has received support around the world with multiple playlists on BBC 6 Music, plays on BBC Radio 1, KCRW, Radio Nova, Radio Eins and more. Alongside this, he has performed and collaborated with Little Dragon, Efterklang’s Clasper Clausen, Falle Nioke (on the recent collaborative Marasi EP) and Junip as well as performing at Eurosonic, Mad Cool and Benicassim Festivals.

Two Rooms From The Memory Palace “Two Rooms from the Memory Palace" re-imagines and captures the live, visceral impact of Andrea Parkins’ immersive eight-channel fixed-media composition “by the same name. Daniel Carter & Jim Clouse Playing Retention

Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA-011 // CD&DL available 11/19/2021 UPC:

On Playing Retention, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter and audio engineer, saxophonist, and percussionist Jim Clouse join forces to create a vibrant collection of seven free improvisations. Their music—which features an array of instruments, including tenor, soprano, and alto saxophone, percussion, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and piano—bubbles with curiosity at every turn, embodying a feeling of fearless exploration. And while it was recorded a decade ago, with untethered exploration as its primary focus, it still feels undeniably fresh. Playing Retention marks Clouse’s first foray into the world of recorded free jazz. Over the past 20 years, he’s made his name running Brooklyn, New York recording studio, Park West Studios, which has garnered a reputation as the hub for avant-garde jazz recording, mixing, and mastering. And before he went into engineering full-time, he’d toured around the city and globe playing straight-ahead jazz. But as he began working with more free jazz artists, he became more entrenched in that music scene, and began to explore it himself. Carter and Clouse first met when Carter came to Park West Studios to record a different album. Clouse was immediately entranced by Carter’s wide open ears, and his ability to allow the music to take him wherever it led. So the two spent some time jamming together, allowing themselves to follow whatever whims came their way. The goal was to play whatever they were thinking, and not to throw anything away—rather, they wanted to make every musical idea count in some way or another. That commitment to exploration became the central tenet of Playing Retention.

In 1996, a wet behind the ears Huntingtons recorded a selection of their favorite Ramones songs with the best and most ambitious intentions. Released as Rocket to Ramonia on the newly formed Burnt Toast Vinyl, it became a favorite of fans of the band, but not so much for the band itself. After a few years of dedicating themselves to becoming the best Ramonescore band they could be, it was painfully obvious to them that they’d made Rocket to Ramonia before perfecting the finer intricacies of the Ramones’ sound. In 1999, the band selected a new batch of classics to cover and released them as File Under Ramones. 8 months later, Huntingtons were on stage with Joey Ramone at CBGBs playing an entire set as his backing band. 9 months after that, they were out touring Europe with Marky Ramone. 2 months later, they were back at CBGBs for another set with Joey. Flash forward to 2015, their guitarist and drummer were touring the country and eventually the world playing as part of CJ Ramone’s band. Here in 2021, Rocket To Ramonia and Burnt Toast Vinyl are both celebrating their 25th anniversaries, and so began talks of a re-release of Rocket to Ramonia. But while it obviously remains part of the band’s history, it’s not something they were proud of, and there was little doubt that if given the opportunity, they could record those songs again and do them justice. So that’s exactly what Huntingtons did! Back To Ramonia represents 25 years of channeling the spirit and energy of Ramones. The attention to detail on every song is sure to be noticed and appreciated, paying the perfect homage to the founding fathers of punk rock. “Hey, let’s hear it for the Huntingtons!” – Joey Ramone “They play Ramones better than the Ramones.” – Hilly Kristal/CBGBs
