Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Neal Sugarman at Daptone Records Honestly not much, We want to make cool records that we love. We always say “make records like the records we love.” There is not much else actually.

How did you personally get started in the music industry? I started as a Sax Player, then when I started my own band I was suddenly Sax Player-Manager, and from there we started our own label; sax player, manager, label guy. . . When and where did the label begin? We started in 2001 in Brooklyn NYC. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? We thought it sounded cool. We also had a house band called the Dap-Kings How has the label changed since it started? Not much actually, we are still super DIY and to this day keep our own recording studio and a small staff of mostly the same people as when we first started. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. There is myself and my partner and Co-Founder Gabe Roth who is doing mostly record production. We now have two marketing/project managers, Nydia and Nick . . . Mikey who does all the manufacturing and all things relating to vinyl and merch manufacturing, and Andy who manages the online sales, shipping & receiving. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Making sure the staff were able to stay employed and healthy. Especially dealing with NYC infrastructure and trying to keep all the records moving from point A to B. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? I would say no, we are pretty world-wide. Regarding the artists we sign, we do tend to stay local, whether they come from Brooklyn, or now with a studio in Southern CA we started a label called Penrose, and that is pretty much the sound of SoCal. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Yes absolutely, we love soul music and that drives the base of everything we do. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? That is a tough one, and yes, very hard to choose, and it might change day to day depending on my mood, but I might say “The Frightnrs - Nothing More To Say.” I actually played sax on a lot of the records which sometimes gets in the way of my pure enjoyment, so for that reason I can enjoy the Frightnrs record on a different level, having only been involved in the production. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Probably having an artist hand paint Charles Bradley murals in major cities all over the country. It was just so amazing to see those go up. If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outsidethe-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign? Daptone Super Soul Review concerts all over the country on the back of a flatbed. Seems obvious, but I always felt our best assets were the live shows. We always used to struggle with logistics as the bands got more popular and the concert tickets got more expensive. I somehow always felt certain that folks that could have loved the music might have become alienated, so to get the live music in front of people would be my call. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We have done it all and personally I don’t like it. I like old school black. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Wait what? How would you describe the average fan of the label? Smart and one who has discerning taste. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Every industry needs to take a stance and do what they can to not only set an example but think about the next generation. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We recently started Wick Records for rock music, then Penrose for Low Rider type slow soul music. We always talked about a comedy label called either Har-D-Har Records or Punch Line. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or sohow would you like the label to be remembered? Great Records All The Time!

East Village “Hotrod Hotel”

East Village are one of the great lost bands, a group whose music has only grown in stature since their premature demise in the spring of 1991. Along with other legendary bands like Big Star and The Action, who also failed to fully stamp their mark whilst active, East Village made pop music that was timeless, but out of step with the musical environment around them. Originally named Episode Four, the band was formed in the mid-1980s by brothers Martin and Paul Kelly in the sleepy Buckinghamshire market town of Princes Risborough just forty miles to the west of London. They were soon joined by Johnny Wood (guitar/vocals) and Spencer Smith (drums) and by 1986 they had forged their brilliant, classic pop sound and recorded their first release, the "Strike Up Matches" EP, which has gone on to become one of the most sought after releases of the C86 era. By 1987 they had renamed themselves East Village and relocated to London where they recorded two EPs for Jeff Barrett's Sub Aqua label. The band gigged extensively through 1988 and 1989, including tours with The House Of Love and McCarthy. The 1989 collapse of Sub Aqua left the band without a label, but they recorded their debut album using money loaned by Bob Stanley, and were soon re-united with Jeff Barrett on his new Heavenly label, releasing their classic single "Circles." Just as interest in the band was building East Village played a sold out show at the New Cross Venue in South London only to end the set by splitting up on stage. The album that followed, "Drop Out" (1993), was mixed and released posthumously on Heavenly and has gone on to be hailed as a classic of its genre. The years that followed saw East Village gain a cult status amongst fans of indie music and prices of original pressings rose rapidly as demand outweighed supply. A singles compilation, "Hotrod Hotel," was released to great acclaim by Summershine in 1994, and now we're very happy to facilitate its first, long overdue, vinyl release.

Rolling out of the mist and dust and silence of time, Ty Segall is behind the wheel of a sleek new ride, a confetti of pages torn from his ongoing saga blizzarding into the air behind him. With Harmonizer, his first album in two years, Ty glides smoothly into unexpected territory, right where he likes to find himself! Responding to the challenge his new songs gave him: a synthtastic production redesign, Ty kicks back with bottom-heavy creativity, dialing up a wealth of guitar and keyboard settings to do the deed. Harmonizer is a glossy, barely-precedented sound for him, and truth, it enraptures the ear — but in Ty’s hands, the sound is also a tool that allows him to cut through dense undergrowth, making for some of his cleanest songs and starkest ideas to date. Harmonizer’s production model couches tightly-controlled beats in thick keyboard textures, with direct-input guitar signal whining and buzzing purposefully from left to right. The Freedom Band appear all over the record, but often one at a time, their contributions leaving a distinctive footprint on the proceedings wherever they appear. Operating in this airtight environment with an eye towards precision, feel, and explosive mass, Ty’s crafted a formidable listening encounter — and once you get between the lines, the need to know more grows more compelling with every song. The thing about closed doors is they need opening again, no matter what happens. You open them and then you can pass through them. And there’s light on the other side. That’s what this album is about. The first recording to be released from Ty’s just-completed Harmonizer Studios, Harmonizer benefits from a collaboration with Cooper Crain, who co-produced the album with Ty. The Venn diagram of these guys unites them in DIY/punk dyed-in-the-wooldom; Ty’s propers you know, but Cooper’s own unique journey in rhythm, minimalism and DIY (as heard on his productions with CAVE, Bitchin Bajas and Jackie Lynn) mines the depths around Ty’s peerless vocal attack and aid in the latest chapter of his never-ending search for unfathomably corrosive guitar sounds. Spoiler alert: they found some more! Bursting with transcendent energy, Harmonizer is an extension of the classic style of Emotional Mugger and Sleeper, revisiting the lonely days and loathsome nights of the alienated, grown-up-wrong soul, to make it all right in the end.

What were they up to? They couldn’t explain it. But not explaining it was part of the point. The Danish duo Bremer/McCoy— with Jonathan Bremer on acoustic bass and Morten McCoy on keys and tape delay—recorded straight to tape so that they had as little time as possible to think about it. They just laid it down. The duo has been making music that defies categorization since 2012. They started as a dub group, bringing their own sound system to shows. Now their sound lilts between jazz, ambient, and neoclassical, with contemplative, propulsive melodies that capture the Nordic woods they walk in. Their last full-length release, 2019’s clear-eyed Utopia, gained them a cult following in the U.S. and a roster of notable fans, including Nils Frahm and Gilles Peterson. The duo’s latest release Natten, which means “The Night” in Danish, strives for even more transcendence, more freedom, more of everything in whatever sound they’re making. It’s still hard to explain. It’s not meant to be explained. These 11 tracks are tinged with the sublime: watching the setting sun, feeling the planet tilt on its axis. If you listen closely, you can hear the constellations. Let Bremer/McCoy bring the night mood to you, whatever you’re up to. Also available: Bremer/McCoy - Utopia

Time In The Sun is the 4th full length album from Charleston, SC band Susto. The album was written and recorded in the midst of a lot of life changing events for lead writer/singer Justin Osborne. Like everyone around the world, Osborne was navigating the global issues felt from the pandemic while normal life continued with its own blessings and challenges.. “We were navigating the global and national issues that everyone else was dealing with, but also I became a father and also lost my father. There was a lot of contemplation going on in my brain, a lot of personal evolution going on in my life, and songwriting was my way of working through it all. The title Time in the Sun is meant to be a monument to my own human existence and also a tribute to the human experience in general. I wouldn’t claim to understand what it means to be a human, from the countless different perspectives of the world, but I do have my own experience to reflect on and I want to be able to express and explain that in some way. I guess this album is an attempt at that. At the core though, it’s just a collection of songs about my life and my feelings.” Time In The Sun is set for release on October 29, 2021 via New West Records.

THE MIDNIGHT MONSTERS Release Date: October 29, 2021 The Midnight restock their first album with Counter Records, Monsters. Available on purple splatter 2LP and CD. The Midnight are duo Tyler Lyle and Tim McEwan. They restocking their 2020 album Monsters in a new purple splatter. Monsters has already sold and streamed over 45k units since it’s July 2020 release. “I wanted the wonder of coming of age to shine through but be combined with the inherent darkness and complexity of being a teenager,” Tim says. The songs reflect both uplifting and the downbeat tones throughout. The 15-track album offers moments of quiet ambience to consider the big ideas and worries of being a teen, but it also makes room for people to just dance. Combining elements of synthwave and 80s inspired pop, Monsters is the band’s most complete work to date. Coming off a big 2019, the band sold out their entire upcoming 2021 fall tour including LA’s Wiltern in 3 days addition to festivals Outside Lands and Crssd among others. Their recent orchestral EP (July 23, 2021) debuted top 5 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart. The band also hosted a livestream that raised a considerable amount for charity, Plus 1, which was featured on the Twitch homepage. Recent syncs include music featured in Season 3 of Netflix series ‘13 Reasons Why’, advertisements for Sonos Speakers, and Apple ‘Memories’ feature on the photos app in IOS. In the bands words: “‘Monsters’ is the story of being a teenager. Adolescence is messy, tragic, brutal, wistful and beautiful. ‘Monsters’ is all of that…”

OVERVIEW Nightmares On Wax returns with new album Shout Out! To Freedom..., a deeply personal project built from life-affirming realisations brought on by a period of profound change in his life. The result is a exploration of musical and personal freedom, and N.O.W’s deepest record to date. Shout Out! To Freedom... is a highly collaborastive affair which sees Evelyn combine with a varierty of artists, includning Shabaka Hutchings, Greentea Peng, Haile Supreme, Pip Millett and more. At the start of each conversation Evelyn asked the simple question, “What’s going on inside? What’s the inner voice saying”’, and as a result, he formed creative bonds with new and upcoming talent that slotted in nicely with both the history and evolution of N.O.W.

“I feel like I’ve been set free of something and I am now becoming who I really am[...] So it was all about this journey of going back to myself, and realising being at home with my wife and my daughter that I’ve not really been here properly. It’s like I’ve just woken back up to what I actually have - and it’s already here.” – George Evelyn

BAT FANGS

QUEEN OF MY WORLD

Born of a shared love of hair metal, partying, and the reckless spirit of rock and roll, Washington D.C. / Carborro, NC duo Bat Fangs brings a fiery combination of shredderistic guitars and heavily harmonized hooks. Guitarist/vocalist Betsy Wright (Ex Hex) and drummer Laura King (Mac McCaughan, Speed Stick) united after playing a show together in their respective projects, with the goal of pushing Wright’s pop focused songwriting in a bolder, brasher direction. Taking up the primary songwriting role and shifting to guitar, Wright steps outside of the typical Ex Hex sound with Bat Fangs’ rowdy rock. Their sophomore LP, Queen of My World is a reeling, rocking mass of guitar and vocals that serves as both a reclamation and a reevaluation of a sound that was once a breeding ground for a particularly egregious brand of cock rock dude-bro. Paying tribute to the glam rock and metal sounds of their youth while offering a modernized alternative to an era of music that deified toxic masculinity as a core value, Wright and King represent a new model of Rock Star dom that’s less about the Stars and more about the Rock. On “Talk Tough”, the first song written for this LP, Wright sings of music carrying her into a near supernatural state, describing herself as being “in the cosmic sea”, and inviting others “crawl out the window on to a higher plain”. This otherworldliness permeates throughout the record, applying magical perspectives to real lived experiences. Queen of My World looks into life’s little moments and sees the mystical within the ordinary. Though many of the songs are autobiographical, at its core the record is a lens into other worlds, gazing into timelines that could have been and childhood memories so distant they may as well be past lives. One such reminiscion takes place on the title track, which reflects on a wild adolescence of drugs and destruction, with an aggressive guitar attack to match. Underneath the high octane teenage antics is a genuine tribute to the unique friendships that can only form in the pseudo-invincibility of youth. As the record examines deeper into these alternate dimensions, it becomes increasingly psychedelic. The culmination of this is closing track “Into the Weave”, an instrumental jam that builds over a repeated tom groove into a full throttle barrage of guitar and drums. As it trails off, one last vocal harmony shines through, a sign that we’ve exited the mythical realm Queen of My World occupies, and moved on to the next.

A Y CHROMOSOME FREE, FUZZED-OUT GARAGE UPDATE OF THE SHANGRI-LAS Led by no-nonsense, all-purpose, guitar-totin' Char Vinnedge, the Luv'd Ones - a Y chromosome free, fuzzed-out garage update of the Shangri-Las - were light years ahead of their time. Here's everything these butt-kicking Michigan trailblazers cut in the '60s for the legendary Dunwich label, rare single sides, demos and more!

The Luv’d Ones began life as the Tremolons in 1964 and were truly the thin end of the wedge for the ever-growing legion of rock and roll women who would soon follow in their footsteps. From the Airplane’s Grace Slick, Big Brother’s Janis Joplin, the Runaways, Fanny, the Slits, the Raincoats, Patti Smith and the Bush Tetras – to the groundbreaking rock and roll women of today – the entire conga line should kneel and give silent thanks every now and then to Char Vinnedge, her sister Chris on bass, rhythm guitarist Mary Gallagher and drummer Faith Orem. The Luv’d Ones – four rock and rolling young women from Niles, Michigan – were not only in a league of their own in 1966, they were the league.

‘Lightbulbs’ still remains unquestionably Fujiya & Miyagi sounding, tweaking their past aesthetic whilst creating a bridge to where they would travel next. With a plush new re-master, the album sounds crisper and punchier than it did before. It’s a fascinating snapshot of a group in transition as they start to shed their formative influences and travel onward.

When the world shut down in March 2020, Charlotte Cornfield was in the middle of an artist residency in the Rocky Mountains, hunkered down in a hut with a baby grand piano, sketching ideas for a followup album to her Polaris-Longlisted 2019 LP The Shape of Your Name. In a matter of hours, she found herself back home in Toronto with months of touring cancelled and a wide swath of time ahead of her. he She began to write feverishly, mining her memories and dreams and recounting them with vivid detail. When the songs were finished, she headed to Montreal to record with producer and engineer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen), drummer Liam OʼNeill (Suuns), bassist Alexandra Levy (Ada Lea), and guitarist Sam Gleason (Tim Baker). The group tracked the album in 5 days, mostly live off the floor, seeking to capture the raw emotion of the songs. em The result is Highs in the Minuses, a memoir in fragments. Here Cornfield fully embraces the role of narrator, moving from one vignette to another in a colourful collage. We see her at 21, heartbroken and lost, carrying a friendʼs 3-legged cat back to her apartment in a box; then as a teenager, playing a new song for a group of friends on a trampoline. She sings of a magical first date, an ex with a mean streak, two skateboarders gliding in a lakeside parking lot. The brutal honesty in her lyrics brings to mind writers like David Berman and Adrianne Lenker, while musically she conjures a Zuma-era Neil Young, leaping from crunchy guitar rock to piano ballads with effortless grace. Highs in the Minuses is Charlotte Cornfieldʼs strongest offering to date, each song a gem in and of itself.

NAOMI ALLIGATOR CONCESSION STAND GIRL

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com

“I think my music provides space for me to say the things I can’t always say in real life.” says Virginia native songwriter and multi-media artist Corrinne James. “That’s what I love about songwriting—There’s room in music for all of the conversations that can’t exist in reality.” While studying New Media and Cinematography at the University of Virginia, James created a secret Bandcamp under the alias Naomi Alligator, and began uploading her intimate home recordings online. Inspired by the sparse and confessional qualities of Liz Phair’s early portastudio recordings, James decided to create her own musical journal to share and process personal anecdotes. Her modern folk production and poetic songwriting links the sounds of artists like Joan Baez and Steeleye Span to a 21st century context. James wrestles with guilt, purpose, and jealousy through vivid narratives in the songs that make up her vast self-releases. This fall, five years since her first upload and over a dozen releases later, James will share her new four-track EP, Concession Stand Girl, while making her debut on Carpark.

On the title track for Concession Stand Girl that opens the EP, James sings the inner monologue of an unappreciated tickettaker at a high school football game. James plucks a sparkly banjo and sings details of the concession stand girl’s relationship to each of the spectators who must go through her to enter the game. “Although seemingly insignificant, the concession stand girl must interact with each spectator as they enter the football game. Despite being unable to physically see the game, inside of her head she narrates her relationship to the people at the game.” The track “Anywhere Else” sits in contrast to the rest of the EP, being the only song where James plays guitar instead of banjo. The last song written for the EP, “Anywhere Else” describes the tense emotions that come from comparing yourself to others in the eyes of your partner. “The protagonist is convincing herself, as well as her partner, that she could leave at any moment. She doesn’t want to be taken for granted anymore.” “Big Blue World” is a touching closer to the EP, where James sings about finding her way back to the place that feels most like home. James examines the fleeting nature of ambition and asks what really creates the feeling of contentment. Describing the song’s lyrics James says, “You can achieve everything you want, but sometimes it doesn’t feel like anything compared to just feeling at home and feeling who you are deep down.” BULLET POINTS • North American publicity by Grandstand • College/Non-Commercial radio by Terrorbird • Sync licensing by Terrorbird • Debut for Carpark Records following years of prolific selfreleased output • Music video in the works for “Concession Stand Girl” and “Anywhere Else” • Facebook boosted posts and targeted Instagram dark posts throughout campaign

TEENAGE HALLOWEEN TEENAGE HALLOWEEN

Often pinned as a band that has a lot going on,” Teenage Halloween has crafted a sound rooted in abundance. Luke Henderik’s rare and universal lyrics, and the precise ear of engineer Evan Bernard, this newest collection of songs is full of surprises that humbly aims to redefine the modern DIY punk scene. Predominantly a queer identifying band, the songs reflect this experience holistically with lyrics that grapple with vulnerability, community, extreme existentialism, mental illness, and gender euphoria. Accompanied by the band’s explosive energy, each song functions as a politically charged anthem. The album maintains constant energy, and that energy also celebrates the brav ery of being a queer band. Further, the songs speak in narratives, making sure people are held accountable for their actions and in the same vein, given the opportunity to communicate that self-reflection.

As the world starts to re-emerge and awaken, the summer of 2021 is boding to be a hot one and Habibi is ready to dance. The two-track EP 'Somewhere' moves the unique four-piece’s sound into the escapism of disco nightclub era New York City, an expansion upon their Detroit-bred garage roots.

After being coined by The New Yorker as having “the Colgate white glisten of sixties girl group pop combined with an uncensored edge” for their acclaimed debut album, Habibi broke boundaries by introducing Farsi-sung tunes on their EP 'Cardamom Garden' that “shed rigid definitions of what constitutes American music” (Pitchfork). In 2020, a month before the world drastically changed, 'Anywhere But Here', the group’s prophetic sophomore album was released, prompting NPR’s Robin Hilton to call them a “noir girl-group.” For the first release with legendary Kill Rock Stars, Habibi knows it’s time to cut loose and take you to the dance floor, enlisting producer Mike Stroud from Ratatat and Heba Kadry as mastering engineer. Fans of the Tom Tom Club and ESG will find here plenty to love.

Pelt

Reticence Resistance November 19,2021 2021 October 29, LP-TLR-137

Format: LP (with download) UPC: 711574920617

For almost thirty years and over the course of countless releases, the American band Pelt has traversed non-idiomatic improv, Easterntinged psychoacoustic drones, and—in its earliest incarnation— noisy post rock. The group once counted among its ranks the late guitarist Jack Rose, whose spirit continues to imbue Pelt’s music with a sound that is as forward-thinking as it is refreshingly unpretentious. Like fellow travelers Daniel Bachman, Paul Metzger, Bill Orcutt, and R. Keenan Lawler, the members of Pelt clearly possess a firm grasp of the American folk vernacular, and similarly honor this history without resorting to pastiche or cliché. It is this fundamental understanding of the art of the recent past that informs Pelt’s music, which one might call “Primitive-Futurist”; a Fourth World approach suggesting a Cumberland Gap Pandit Pran Nath. Reticence Resistance was recorded live at London’s Café Oto over two nights in February of 2017. The album features the core Pelt lineup of Patrick Best on Grand Piano and harmonium, Mike Gangloff on fiddle, Nathan Bowles on percussion and banjo, and Mikel Dimmick on harmonium, bowls, and bells. The capacious, inviting sound of the performances was captured without effects, using only microphones on the acoustic instruments. “Diglossia,” which makes up the entirety of Side A, begins with an insistent hammering of piano keys and Gangloff’s swooping fiddle. Soon, Best begins teasing out a scale as Dimmick’s harmonium envelops everything in a luminous sound bath. The way the piece harmoniously advances and recedes, at first almost imperceptibly, recalls Coltrane’s improvisations circa “India” as much as it does ocean currents and lapping waves. Where “Diglossia” suggests elemental forces, Side B—comprised of the “Sundogs-Chiming-The Door Hill” suite—sounds carnal, like the sustained exhale of a giant beast. Jack Rose’s evergreen composition “Sundogs” opens the side with reverberating bells and gongs. At first the effect is like standing in a hallways listening to four equidistant rooms: Best provides ominous piano clusters thick with overtones; Gangloff’s keening fiddle conjures a kind of microtonal Eck Robertson; Dimmick’s immersive drones swaddle Bowles’ various pecks, probes, and brushes at the banjo. Suddenly, the seemingly disparate pieces appear to gather at the ceiling and locate each other; everything appears to snap into place suggesting the slow transformation of a raga as it develops from the alap section to the gat. The effect is mesmerizing. Reticence Resistance is a crucial document of Ever Weird America, and quite possibly the band’s finest work to date.

LISTEN HERE Ride the Skies is the 2nd album by Lightning Bolt, and this re-release makes it available to fans for the first time since it’s original release. Compared to their first album it’s cleaner, tighter, recorded in studio rather than live. Which is not to say this is boring or sanitized in any way, Lightning Bolt never fail to make magic, filling a space with loud, raw sound. Sounds of synth or guitar turn out to be bass, and riffs become patterns, become a beat in the background, become a wall of noise, become a clear sound above it all. Lightning Bolt are known for the sound that truly comes into it’s own in this album. Outside of their 7 acclaimed albums, they’re known for frequent & exhilirating live shows, and this reputation has created a market for their older titles. Ride the Skies is rereleased with deluxe packaging featuring jacket art that was designed by Brian Chippendale for the original release but has never been realized until now. Recent Thrill Jockey Lightning Bolt re-releases seem to move as quickly as the Brians playing live, as old and new fans jump at the rare opportunity to finally get an old favorite in a shiny new jacket. “on Ride the Skies, Gibson makes his bass do things ... resulting in some of the most distinctive tones ever to be produced from the instrument. Brian Chippendale... rounds off the dynamic duo of Brians that is Lightning Bolt. With a style that’s similarly frantic, though decidedly more conventional than his fellow Brian, Chippendale completes the musical package nicely, intensifying the furious energy that makes Ride the Skies so fucking awesome.“ -Pitchfork ALSO AVAILABLE : Lightning Bolt 2xLP (Thrill 498) Sonic Citadel CD/2xLP (Thrill 505) Wonderful Rainbow LP (Thrill 501) Fantasy Empire CD/2xLP (Thrill 380)

Lotic Water

Release date: 29th October 2021 (CD + Digital) 14th January 2022 (Both Marbled + Classic Black Vinyl)

J’Kerian Morgan, the artist known as Lotic will release her new album 'Water' on October 29th “This is the record I always wanted to write. This feels like my arrival as an artist.” Water, for Houndstooth, is a stunning revelation; a tender meditation on love’s losses and lifeforce, timelines, bloodlines, and resilience. Arriving at the end of a period Morgan recalls as, “having to be adaptable, while being dragged through the trenches,” Water adds the haunting quality of siren song to a career already marked by its engaging emotionality. To arrive at Water meant to become like water. Lotic dedicated two years to a deep, intentional process of surrendering to softness, welcoming impermanence, embracing intimate relationships with her environment and self. Yet, to embrace vulnerability is to welcome its totality. Water is the complete embodiment of Lotic’s dedicated praxis; one which unpicks a certain narrative about corrosive angst and outlier musicality. Compositions curve around the sub bass of an 808, with vibrations and hums superseding clarity and separation. Drums are softened to a powdery warmth, and each chapter unfolds as a symphonic sound poem. Heartful depictions of love relationships to others and the self, to ancestry and identity, are marked by stunning new expressions of ecstatic voices. Water heals, and it harms. It can sharpen, scald or silently consume. Water is a conduit for human corruption, such as the wrenching cruelty of forced Middle Passage crossings, yet water remains a site of ritual and absolution, a source of constant renewal. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Metropolis.

ROSS GOLDSTEIN CHUTES & LADDERS The Mellotron has graced songs by some of rock’s most important and popular artists: David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” King Crimson’s “The Court Of The Crimson King,” and the Rolling Stones’ “2000 Light Years From Home,” to name but a few. Yet it’s always seemed more like a side dish than a main course in these contexts. Ross Goldstein—a rock musician with psychedelic inclinations (see his recordings with Devin Gary & Ross, Fog Window, etc.)—decided to thrust the Mellotron to the forefront with a trilogy of albums that culminates in the riveting new collection Chutes And Ladders, which follows 2018’s The Eighth House and 2020’s Timoka. Chutes reveals Goldstein’s mastery of subtle mood shifts and tonal shading. On “Diabolo,” what sounds like the long sustain from a vibraphone creates a feeling of fraught suspense and conflicted wonder. “2020” stands as one of Goldstein’s strangest pieces (apt, given what went down that year), its ill drones, abrupt pivots in mood, and quick cuts from contentment to contentiousness leaving the listener thrillingly disoriented. Similar sorcery animates “The Blue Desert,” a tour de force in which unsettling, faux-operatic male vocals and ominous, low-end drones are crosshatched with enigmatic smears of xylophone-like timbres and a string resonance that’s the aural equivalent of a UFO. Goldstein’s love of classical music surfaces on “Allegretto (Beethoven)” and “Largo (Shostakovich).” The former evokes a stately procession through a 17th-century cathedral, its elegant melody bearing

a rich chiaroscuro of tones, while the latter bestows an ancient chamber-music beauty that wears its ominousness lightly. Part of what makes Chutes And Ladders so deeply rewarding are the Mellotron’s imperfections, which result in what Goldstein calls the “microtonal shifts” that lend a continuity to the trilogy. “The

more you layer a thing, the more those harmonic worlds open up, because of the clashes going on in the chords. So not only have you created a voicing, with a certain arrangement of instruments, but the way they are now going together has this... it can’t be perfect. There’s no way it would be as perfect as a real orchestra.”

AFTERNOON BIKE RIDE AFTERNOON BIKE RIDE Montreal based trio Afternoon Bike Ride blend alluring dream-pop vocals, lo-fi beat music, sensitive acoustic instrumentation and leftfield production to create an irresistible post-genre signature sound. Set for release on 09/24/21, their self titled debut album is a sonic hug that collects 15 tracks conveying messages of self-love, kindness, community and hope. These songs lyrically flurry over instrumentals meant to incline the listener to pause their inner monologue and take a moment to breathe. Musician-producers David Tanton (aka Rhoda/Tender Spring), Éloi Le BlancRinguette (aka Thomas White), and Lia Kurihara (aka LIA) who also writes and sings for the group; met in Montreal and formed Afternoon Bike Ride in 2018. Originally intended as a creative, collaborative aside to their own solo projects (collectively they’ve amassed 100’s of millions of streams), they found the music progressing. They say “We each felt like it was a space to experiment with different sounds than we were typically used to making. As we crafted our songs, we realized that our sound progressed into a more refined and intricate version of our beginnings, letting vocals take center stage on some tracks, involving different instrumentalists, spending more time on sound design, incorporating facets of unexpected genres wherever we can.” Following EP releases with College Music and Dust Collectors, the project steadily developed throughout 2019 before signing with LA based label Friends of Friends Music in 2020. ‘Skipping Stones’ EP was released in March, which picked up support on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music. The creative process towards the album began with the three friends on the rooftop of David’s apartment in Montreal. The warmth of life in Québec nestled in the purity of it’s winter proves to be a necessary tool in the uniqueness of this album. The engulfing warmth of their music is inspired by the lack thereof; this album is meant to kiss the coldest of hearts.

The Reds, Pinks and Purples You Might Be Happy Someday Tough Love LP

Limited repress on BLUE VINYL. RIYL: Sarah Records, Even As We Speak, The Field Mice, Blue Boy, The Clientele, early Belle & Sebastian. Deep amidst San Francisco’s Richmond neighborhood misty air and washed-out pastel blocks, Glenn Donaldson has been diligently creating minor masterpieces with rudimentary home technology for some time now. With The Reds, Pinks & Purples, Donaldson has finally created a vivid reflection of this dreary scene. You Might be Happy Someday is an oblique strand of SF outer-avenue cloud cover that stretches across the Atlantic to the grey docks of Bristol as captured in Sarah Records’ fetishized insert photos. Despite the deceptively congenial presentation, Happy is often a heavy record. After a litany of Donaldson’s past iterations (from experimental abstraction to post-punk and pop), The Reds, Pinks & Purples is Glenn D’s most personal project. Balanced awkwardly atop almost ironically upbeat jangles and rhythms Mitch Easter might have captured on his reel-to-reel are prime cuts of bummer pop. Almost every track is written in second person, creating a feeling of overheard private inner conversations-on-repeat: soft-lob criticisms, supportive friend advice and embarrassing confessions. A smeared window into the (kindly) cynical thoughts of a romantic misanthrope. Like the work of other U.S. depresso-pop purveyors East River Pipe, The Reds, Pinks & Purples’ mini-album is the kind of record that is both unsettling and comforting. 1 Last Summer In A Rented Room 2 Forgotten Names 3 Worst Side Of Town 4 Your Parents Were Wrong About You 5 Desperate Parties 6 Half-a-Shadow 7 Sex, Lies & Therapy 8 You Might Be Happy Someday

VLURE SHATTERED FAITH / DESIRE (LIVE) STREET DATE: 29 15 OCTOBER 2021 2021 LABEL: PERMANENT CREEPS RECORDS Buzzing new Glasgow five-piece VLURE will release their hotly anticipated debut 7” ‘Shattered Faith / Desire (Live)’ via London-based label Permanent Creeps Records.

“There is nothing comparable - this is a new era of musically skeletal human showmanship” - So Young Magazine “Urgent, destructive and completely absorbing. Brutalist in form - unyielding, massive-sounding, distinctive - their atmospheric, yearning mood is overflowing with inclination and exposed tenderness vulnerable and exasperated. They pound the door down with every inch of blood, sweat and tears in their vessels” - Wax Music “This is post-punk, but not as you might familiarly expect” - Little Indie Blogs “One of Scotland’s most exciting new bands” Tenement TV

Bursting onto the scene at the dawn of 2020, VLURE introduced themselves to the world with a live audio/visual performance of their phenomenal track ‘Desire’, captured in beautiful cinematography from the loading bay of their Glasgow studio space. Blurring the lines between live electronics, jarring guitars and the performance sensibilities of their post-punk contemporaries, the video offered a keyhole view into their captivating live shows. Combining synth laden hooks, heavy club influenced rhythms and emotionally confronting lyrics, VLURE have already seen support from the likes of So Young and Wax Music praising their life affirming, intense and enigmatic live performances. Recorded between the halls of a deconsecrated church in the heart of the Scottish Borders, the self-produced ‘Shattered Faith’ is an indulgent, genre bending coming of age anthem influenced by the rhythms, repetitions and euphoric hooks of Glasgow’s thriving afterparty and club scene with an angular post-punk foundation. Speaking on the track the band explain: “We wanted to create something that felt at home on the dancefloors that we all found ourselves on growing up, yet still equally at home in the sweat-filled venues that the band was conceived in. At its crux, “Shattered Faith’ is about self-empowerment. It’s the disillusionment with where you are and what you’ve been given. It’s lying on your kitchen floor at 3am realising who you truly are and finding power in that - it’s a new lease of life. We believe that, if they want to find it, there is something for everyone in this song.” Upcoming Live Dates 10 Sep – Glasgow, TRNSMT Festival 2021 26 Nov – London, Moth Club

Merry Christmas...Have a Nice Life (Clear with Red & White “Candy Cane” Swirl Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 5, 2021 Leave it to Cyndi Lauper to record a Christmas album that’s upbeat without being sappy! Honestly, the stories that surround the making of this 1998 record are enough to put you in the Christmas spirit. Like the fact that she recorded it at her home while her infant son Declyn slept (he can be heard giggling and burbling on “New Year’s Baby [First Lullaby]”). And that she taped her vocals inside her cedar closet because she liked the reverb sound. In short: no spoiled superstar or commercial cash-in here! Just a fresh, homespun take on a time-honored tradition, brought to you by a performer whose work in music, theater, and advocacy continues to inspire. Cyndi brings her trademark sass to songs like “Christmas Conga” and the bawdy “Minnie and Santa” among the eight original tunes on the record. But the traditional tunes “Three Ships” and “Silent Night” radiate a reverent, gather-‘round-the-fireplace vibe that’ll warm the cockles of even the most hidebound holiday music devotee. As a former music journalist (for Creem and Rolling Stone among other periodicals), director Cameron Crowe has always put his heart and soul into the soundtracks of his films. So, it’s no wonder that the most ambitious of all his films, Vanilla Sky, sported the most far-ranging and masterful of all of his scores. The film itself was a waking dream, subject to various interpretations; the soundtrack, too, explored shifting moods and shades, but always maintaining the surreal tone and aesthetic of the film, with a glittering line-up (R.E.M., Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan) of artists. The result was breathless praise for the soundtrack (the New York Times called it “a music masterpiece”) and an Academy Award nomination. It is, quite simply, one of the greatest “mix-tapes” a film director has ever created (with some help from soundtrack Co-Producer Danny Bramson and Crowe’s then-wife, Nancy Wilson of Heart); and, for its 20th anniversary, we have created a custom gatefold cover for the 2-LP release and pressed up 1500 copies in white with orange swirl vinyl. A sublime listening and visual experience awaits. 5. OVERVIEW absent origin is the latest album to be announced today by multi-disciplinary artist Mira Calix via Warp Records on 5 November 2021. “Like Duchamp, I had started out wanting to, “make an album, or box, of approximately all the things I produced”. In the end, I realised - as much as a collage is the coupling of two or more realities, it also offers the means to examine the materials and culture of an era, questioning and expanding its borders.” Mira Calix

RELEASE DATE • 11.05.2021 FILE UNDER • M / ELECTRONIC

Every song on the album was created by applying a different collage process relating to a different visual artist, spanning the history of collage to contemporaries of the practice. The sonic materials are subjected to a myriad of processes; layered, synthesised, constructed and assembled into electronic melodies, textures and complex, frisky dance rhythms that are constantly shifting in surprising ways. absent origin employs collage to make sense of the current moment of displaced voices, disjunction and political unrest.

ROSS FROM FRIENDS TREAD Release Date: 5th November 2021 Ross From Friends levels up with “Tread”, his keenly anticipated new album on Brainfeeder Records. Melodic, touching, nostalgic but brilliantly modern and original, it runs the full gamut from melancholy to euphoria. It’s also sleeker and arguably more dancefloor-focused than his acclaimed debut album “Family Portrait” (2018), but his signature personality is ever present. Ross From Friends made his debut on Breaker Breaker in 2015, 12” outings soon followed on labels Lobster Theremin and sister imprint Distant Hawaii, Lone’s Magicwire and Molten Jets before he signed to Brainfeeder. His first release on Brainfeeder was 2018’s “Aphelion EP” and his debut album “Family Portrait” followed quickly afterwards. Ross From Friends’ ever-evolving 3-man live show featuring a blend of guitar, keyboards and saxophone (last seen at Coachella 2019) is set to return to the US in Spring 2022.

American Dreams Records PATRICK SHIROISHI HIDEMI

“The concentration camps that Japanese Americans had to go through has been a major part of my work for the last couple of years,” says Los Angeles-based composer and saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi. His last album, Descension, focused heavily on the experience inside Japanese-American concentration camps, but his new album Hidemi, a solo multilayered woodwind journey, considers the personal experience of his grandfather after getting out. “His name is Hidemi Pat,” Shiroishi explains, “so I was named after him, but I never got to meet him, as he passed away before I was born.” As Patrick’s name is in memory to his grandfather, Hidemi is too, and across the album’s nine tracks, Shiroishi brings the listener through tension and ZMTMI[M [PW_KI[QVO [WUM\PQVO ]VÅT\MZML beautiful, and ultimately hopeful, a testament to perseverance and grace.

layers of harmonies often each recorded in one take. The album’s opening blasts on “Beachside Lonelyhearts” blow the doors open, but are quickly replaced by loping, interplaying melodies that swell, ZMKMLM \PMV [TW_Ta UM\PWLQKITTa [P]‫ټ‬M W‫ ٺ‬7\PMZ [WVO[ TQSM ¹<W 3QTT ) ?QVL =X *QZLº [\IZ\ _Q\P _WWL_QVL Æ]ZZQM[ IVL NZMM jazz that metamorphosize into something serene before Shiroishi’s baritone sax breaks open the piece, bringing back the beginning’s composed but frenetic energy. Shiroishi wanted to allow for community expression, too, to be a part of Hidemi regarding the Asian-American experience, so he curated and edited a chapbook featuring writings and art by fellow Asian-American artists - Tangled. The book was made to provide a platform for thoughts considering the recent rise of violence against Asian-Americans due to racism spurred by misinformation on Covid-19, and features artists such as Dylan Fujioka, Mai Sugimoto, Tashi Dorji, Susie Ibarra.

If you’ve ever wondered what trios, quartets, and quintets of Patrick Shiroishi’s sounded like, Hidemi was made for you. All of the album was written and performed by Shiroishi who sang and played alto, baritone, tenor, C melody, In an evocative, personal essay from and soprano saxophones, stacking up Tangled, Shiroishi explains the Japanese

concept of gaman, which means “to endure the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity, or simply put, to bite your tongue.” It’s a chilling, profound passage in which the history of JapaneseAmericans have had to gaman, with ;PQZWQ[PQ ]T\QUI\MTa [\I\QVO \PI\ ¹?M KIV VW TWVOMZ »OIUIV ¼ ?M U][\ JM TW]L and speak up, so what our grandparents and ancestors went through will not be forgotten or taken for granted.” Hidemi functions as a warning, but there is ecstasy and hope in it, too. In the last song “The Long Bright Dark,” a short, blossoming tear-jerker that crescendos with Shiroishi’s vocals, the artist cries out in Japanese: “Is this the end of the storm?” It’s the sole sung passage in Hidemi J]\ Q\[ M‫ٺ‬MK\Q^MVM[[ Q[ KPQTT inducing - it contextualizes everything, pushing forward while acknowledging historical evil. It’s moving and impactful, moving towards a society where - in his essay, he writes - “our children and future generations may live without fear. So that they won’t have to ‘gaman.’”

Nashenas Life is a Heavy Burden - Ghazals and poetry from Afghanistan Strut present the first compilation of legendary Afghan Ghazal singer Dr. Mohammad Sadiq Fitrat a.k.a. Nashenas, recorded at the Radio Afghanistan Studios and later released on singles by the Royal label in Iran. Nashenas first made his move towards music aged 16 in 1951 when he approached Afghanistan’s national radio station, Radio Kabul, with an idea for a broadcast and, impressed with his language skills, they offered him a permanent job. “I was in close contact with some of the big names in Afghan music like Jalil Zaland,” Nashenas explains. “My father had a gramophone and we listened to other singers like Ustad Qasim Khan and Kundan Lal Saigal.” After unsuccessful initial forays into singing sessions for the station, he honed his skills as a writer, singer and musician, playing the harmonium. Inspired by a movie he had seen at the cinema, Nashenas wrote a new poem and sang on air again after the evening news, using the name ‘Nashenas’ (meaning ‘unknown’) for the first time. Following a wave of positive feedback from the public, he was given a new weekend slot and built his reputation through film song interpretations, famous poems set to music and his own compositions sung in Dari and Pashto. Nashenas would witness turbulent times as Afghanistan found itself caught up in the Cold War and the early ‘90s civil war until it became too dangerous to stay in the country. Through a friend in the U.N., he was able to seek asylum for himself and his family and take up residence in London, continuing to work as a musician and giving concerts globally. Most of Nashenas’ recordings during this period were only made for broadcast, later surfacing on singles through the Royal label in Iran. Life Is A Heavy Burden is compiled from these singles by Chris Menist and Mads Jensen. All tracks are remastered by The Carvery and both formats feature new liner notes including an interview with Nashenas. The album is part of the new United Sounds of Asia series curated by Chris Menist and Maft Sai of Paradise Bangkok.

KEY POINTS First ever international compilation of Nashenas’ recordings for Radio Afghanistan, compiled by Chris Menist and Mads Jensen. Features rare photos and full liner notes including interview with Nashenas Supported by full worldwide PR campaign involving Nashenas himself (now based in UK) First release in the new United Sounds Of Asia compilation and album series set up by Chris Menist and Maft Sai

Chime School is the project of San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec. Endlessly charmed by 80s indie and its 60s forbearers (and any record with a 12-string guitar), Andy cut his teeth as a drummer with SLR labelmate Odd Hope in their early group Pink Films; later with shoegazers Cruel Summer, and currently with indiepop outfit Seablite. But it wasn't until he was gifted a cassette 4-track portastudio "almost as a dare," that he came out from behind the kit to write and record his own material.

Aptly named for its autodidact roots, Chime School pays homage to the formative jangle of The Byrds by way of early Primal Scream and The Springfields; the production and pop sensibility of the Biff Bang Pow and The Razorcuts; and the spirit of great singles labels like Creation, Postcard and Sarah. From the dreamy album opener "Wait Your Turn" to the driving jangle of "Dead Saturdays" and the lush, epic "Gone Too Fast" we can see that we're in the presence of a very talented writer indeed, someone with a lifetime's worth of pop fandom just waiting to burst out in song.

It's challenging to take familiar musical forms and make them feel fresh and new, but Andy has tackled the task with aplomb on this assured debut. Featuring future classic singles like "It's True" and "Taking Time To Tell You" it's certain to catch the ears of indiepop fans, for sure, but will also be a balm for anyone in love with melodic, classic guitar pop. • Recorded and mixed by John Goodmanson (Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Los Capesinos) Vixen, the second album from Foxx Bodies, is the sound of joyful catharsis. It’s the artistic manifestation of four friends—vocalist Bella Vanek, guitarist Bailey Moses, bassist Matt Vanek, and drummer Adam Bucholz—locking arms and eyes, in full support of each other’s efforts to dig through layer after layer of compacted grief, trauma, pain, and fury. The feeling that remains after the 13th and final song on this triumphal album fades away is exhausted exhilaration. Recorded and produced by John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill) and mixed by Erik Blood months before the pandemic was in full swing, Vixen is a bold evolutionary step for this young quartet. Gone is much of the surf rock-influenced swing of previous efforts, replaced by massive guitar riffs and a newfound pulverizing attack from the rhythm section. Opening track “Bad Kid”—the first single to be released from the album—sets the tone immediately, with the music stomping forth authoritatively while Bella Vanek unpacks years of parental guilt and disappointment. Later the singer takes on the voice of a pleading victim while the rest of the band swaggers and steams behind her like Unwound at its most playful. And Foxx Bodies unveils their most post-punk-inspired effort to date with the sensual and defiant “Room,” all roiling beats and Killing Joke guitar tone. What cuts through every moment of Vixen is the voice of Bella Vanek. It’s a dynamic instrument that snaps from a demure purr to a full-throated scream in seconds. It’s the anchor for Foxx Bodies’ entire discography, giving it strength and weight. And Bella uses it here to shattering effect on songs like the title track, where she unabashedly recounts years of grooming and sexual abuse and asks some devastating questions in an aching croon: “Why did you do that? Why do I feel guilty? How could you do that? Why did you pick me?” She keeps her voice measured and steady, lest these legitimate queries come off as hysterical, saving her righteous anger for the rest of the album. And there’s plenty of it to go around. It’s what runs through this album like a river of molten lava, giving Vixen, and all the music of Foxx Bodies, its heat and its menacing edge.

“Vanek’s voice in particular swings from the depths to the heavens on “Bad Kid,” wailing with an unhinged fury at the track’s most climactic moments.” – Stereogum

A new instrumental album of acoustic guitar playing from Six Organs of Admittance’s Ben Chasny! Everybody knows it’s been far too long since 2004’s much-beloved For Octavio Paz; even as the landscape has crowded with acoustic players, we’ve all been dying to hear Ben’s distinctive virtuosity again in this format. But The Intimate Landscape is so much more . . . KPM Music, the legendary British library music company, extended an offer to Ben to make some songs for their library. Well aware of their history, he immediately agreed. The field of library music (music made for hire, for use in placement in films and advertising) is one that’s come to public consciousness only relatively recently in the long century of record-making, but the influence of such records has been felt for years in the aesthetics of many diverse artists, including several who’ve recorded for Drag City. So it’s a special thing for Drag City, whose appreciation for Ben’s unique artistry has been borne out over a countless variety of releases, to issue this really amazing entry in both the KPM Music tradition and the ever-expanding Ben Chasny/Six Organs of Admittance ouvre. Ben chose the acoustic guitar for these recordings after considering the width and breadth of possible music he could make for the occasion. His approach while playing it was simple — deceptively so: to make music as present and immediate and beautiful as possible. This type of playing requires a deep breath before beginning, as it has to generate from within, as well as at the fingertips. The resulting music is inventive and engaging, both in and out of the astral style of Ben’s music and the utilitarian genre of music to which he’s contributing. The album’s title — The Intimate Landscape — is a clue to these dual intentions, as is Ben’s use of his given name rather than the 6OOA alias he has preferred in his career. These songs manifest lovely themes played on acoustic guitar, recorded with spacious, almost pastoral ambiance; richly evocative pieces that can fill the multiple purposes of any sound library around the world. When paired with their titles, however — such as, “Last Night to Use the Telescope,” “Circular Road,” and “On the Way to the Coast” — these pieces are profoundly re-contextualized as potent personal expressions. So too are the songs with titles like “Water Dragon.” “Star Cascade,” and “Dust In the Ravine.” Two decades-plus into his life in music, Ben’s got the craft and ability to make music that can be encompassingly heard as intimate AND universal. Going for melody, Ben employs a relaxed technical facility, supported by a few guitar overdubs, plus several well-placed synths and a passage of wordless vocalizing, accessing the murky depths of his reservoir of spirituality while hand-spinning irresistible sonic candy at the same time. This is a greatly engrossing listening experience, regardless of what the listener’s intentions are. Given the rarity of such lovely acoustic essays from the fingers of Ben Chasny, and thanks to EMI and KPM Music, we’ll find ourselves returning to gaze over The Intimate Landscape often, for many years to come.

Lee Gamble completes his ‘Flush Real Pharynx 2019-2021’ album cycle with ‘A Million Pieces Of You’, the third EP of a triptych written in a time when the subjective experience of overload came to a halt, giving way to an overbearing sense of loss, burnout and a desperate need for hope. These seven tracks feel more reflective, more human than the two preceeding EPs; the serpentine dopplers and seductive supercar engines of ‘In A Paraventral Scale’, and imploding motion sculptures of ‘Exhaust’. A deepfake of Lee’s voice appears from the chaotic slow-mo crash of ‘Balloon Lossy’, timidly telling of “[garbled]… good news”. The uncanny spectre of deep fakes, AI and deep learning models give way to the melancholic loneliness of the solo piano in ‘Empty Middle Seat’. Then glimmering, golden pads on ‘Hyperpassive’ slowly crawl into the hopeful, bright arpeggiations of ‘Balloon Copy’. ‘A Million Pieces Of You’ is a ride through a part-synthetic, part-modelled, part-imitation, part-taught, part-human, parthopeful, part-reflective and paradoxically affirmative space – an involuntarily fitting finale to an album originally conceived in a world different to the one we now inhabit.

Triptides So Many Days EP 12” Vinyl + Digital Catalog#: CURED014 UPC 12" VINYL:850014131272 UPC DIGITAL: 850014131265

Among the newest generation of bands in the tradition of West Coast psychedelia, Triptides have blossomed into the role of elegant adventurers. Led by guitarist, keyboardist and singer Glenn Brigman, with drummer Brendan Peleo-Lazar and bassist/guitarist Stephen Burns, the trio is continually discovering their sound through a complex map of familiar influences and bold choices in tonality, structure and texture. On their new long-playing record “So Many Days”, Triptides rolls and flows into some new territory in a way that feels natural. The group has exchanged fuzz guitars for chiming acoustics, phaser pedals for pedal steels and Farfisa for harmonica. This new 4-song 12"

(containing 3 non-LP studio recordings) gives us a taste of those new Los Angeles canyon vibes. Their first for Curation Records.

This is a transformation long in the making. Starting in 2010 in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, Brigman was making albums as Triptides with roommates and friends in a raw, Beach Boys-meet-Cleaners-From-Venus cassette-induced haze. As the band moved West, so did their influences, and Los Angeles brought out a more sophisticated element in Triptides. Doors-inspired organ flourishes and driving, Stereolab-esque movements melded with the spirit of The Byrds in the Fifth Dimension, as the trio both on stage and in the studio opened up a new sonic world. After the otherworldly “Alter Echoes”, released to highly critical acclaim earlier this year, the group has joined up with LA’s Curation Records to release their forthcoming love letter to the Laurel Canyon Sound, “So Many Days”. Written and recorded in the San Bernardino mountains, these songs show a more grounded and pensive side of their ever-evolving sonic landscape. A whole new palette of sounds is gained, but nothing is lost. Even amidst acoustic and pedal steel guitars, the songs are unmistakably Triptides. First-time limited-edition reissue of this mega super-crazy rare US hard rock/metal heavy psych private press LP from 1981. Golden Dragon were a wild Filipino-American quartet from the Bay Area lead by Freddy Mabuhay. The album is filled with heavy blazing psyched out metallic rock, blistering guitar solos loaded with fuzz and wah, heavy riffs and stoned vocals. Freddy was the bass player in the legendary band Dakila who had a fantastic album out on Epic in 1972. Later in 1978, after playing the Diamond Head Crater Festival in Hawaii, Freddy formed his own group; Golden Dragon. In 1981 he and his band; consisting of his brother and two musicians from the legendary Bay Area punk band VKTMS, recorded the amazing Golden Dragon album. The album was only pressed in a few copies to be sent out as a demo to secure a record deal. Unfortunately, the deal never happened, and the album stayed unreleased and pretty much unobtainable for all these years.

The short lived, but lethal, Golden Dragon band performed live at the legendary venue Mabuhay Gardens, aka The Fab Mab, in San Francisco. Sadly, Freddy passed away shortly thereafter, and the mighty Golden Dragon’s music stayed obscure growing to mythical status among hard rock and psych rock aficionados. Subliminal Sounds has now put together this release in cooperation with the surviving musicians. It’s finally time for the world to experience the mighty sound of Golden Dragon!

The band recorded and released two private press singles in 1975 and 1976 respectively. Both were done in micro pressings of 100 copies each making them very rare and sought after. We follow the band from their first incarnation as a killer heavy power trio and then expanding in to a massive 5-piece powerhouse and until the military draft put an end to their teenage hard rock dreams… This stuff will blow your mind and ears to bits! Veik - Surrounding Structures Fuzz Club LP

FC142V12R

5060467887656

On 180g ultra-clear vinyl w/ standard sleeve. French three-piece Veik release their highly-praised debut album, ‘Surrounding Structures’. Supported by BBC 6 Music, KEXP, France24, France Inter, Loud & Quiet, Line of Best Fit, Louder Than War and more, the album is now getting a second vinyl pressing on 180g ultra-clear vinyl. Centred around vintage analogue synths and abrasive instrumentation, the Caen-based band’s experimental post-punk is rooted in the 70s avant-garde, most notably Krautrock and No Wave. They reel off groups like Implog, Suicide or Indoor Life as inspirations, whilst existing in a similar world to contemporaries like Beak>, Suuns and Girl Band. The album arrived off the back of a handful of EPs and singles, tours around Europe and shows with the likes of The Soft Moon, Tomaga and Vanishing Twin. Talking about ‘Surrounding Structures’, they say that “The writing of the album was heavily influenced by architectural environments. We made a lot of detours when touring in 2017 and 2018 to visit modernist and brutalist buildings in France, Germany and Belgium (which caused us many delays for soundchecks.)” Listening to the album, it’s quickly clear how the disjointed shapes and abrasive textures of brutalist architecture are manifested in their music. (Fluid Radio) After 3 years, New Zealand based Alicia Merz breaks her silence with her 5th Birds of Passage album ‘The Last Garden’. Alicia doesn’t share much with the public, except through her music, and so this album offers a rare glimpse into her secret world. Lose yourself in a universe of minimalist soundscapes, reinvented shoegaze, and the words of a poet who all too well knows the cold loneliness of the dark, but can find the breathless beauty in it also. "Birds of Passage is humble and heartbroken. Her warm words are crimson berries that bear fruit in the cold depths of winter, hanging over crooked, bare branches where nothing else survives. The moods on these electronic miniatures vary from piece to piece; some somber, brooding, and laden with mystery, others starry-eyed, tinged with sci-fi, and hungry for adventure. Connections are finally forged between Donoso’s early hardware synthesizer arpeggiation experiments, his darker and more abstract work with an emphasis on synthetic textures, pulsation, and sound design and the more recent extreme full throttle electronic mayhem and prog inspired technical opuses. Progress Trap is as harmonious as its predecessor allowing dissonance to subtly seep in, providing mere hints at the undercurrent of threat hidden beneath the music's smooth surface. There's a lot to digest on Progress Trap, as with Donoso’s entire canon, but as always, the effort is repaid. Although clearly taking inspiration from the rock and roll sounds of yesteryear, Queen Of Jeans have made the style completely their own, crafting sound that is both welcoming and challenging.” -UPROXX “Philadelphia four-piece Queen of Jeans are the band you didn’t know you were missing, shimmying around your ears with vibrant three-part harmonies and ‘60s girl group and doo-wop hooks you don’t hear on your typical punk rock bill.” -Billboard Crockpot Pop. It’s not a term you’ll be instantly familiar with, but it is a somewhat perfect descriptor of Philadelphia quartet Queen of Jeans. Intentionally tongue-in-cheek, the self-ascribed term was coined by the band to chronicle the haphazard nature of their core ingredients. They are a slew of sounds and influences in a juxtaposition that somehow strikes balance, sculpted over time into the refined and tenacious outfit they are today. On new album if you're not afraid, i'm not afraid, Queen of Jeans have teamed up with prominent producer Will Yip to help usher the band into a new sonic era. While their signature sound still pervades the overall work, the album marks a decided turn toward more tightly knit songwriting that emphasizes their most alluring strengths. A continued staple of their sound, layered vocal harmonies shine throughout, drenching the twangy, americana-reminiscent guitar lines in beautiful, evocative light, and illuminating the album's vast yet serene soundscapes.

SAM EVIAN You, Forever November 5th, 2021

• New pressing on limited edition “Translucent Sunset” yellow-orange vinyl • LP includes digital download • 2018 follow up album to 2016’s Premium As it has been said: no matter where you go, there you are. With his new album You, Forever, Sam Evian, the project of New York-based musician, songwriter, and producer Sam Owens, is here to add some eternity to that sentiment. “This is you, forever,” he says. “It’s about accepting that you are responsible for you, that you’re in charge of your actions. Everything you do affects others and yourself, so, no matter what you choose to do, be there and learn from it.” It’s a mantra that powers self-starter Owens, who debuted his first Sam Evian full-length, Premium, in the fall of 2016. The notion takes on a dual meaning that is echoed across You, Forever. You, Forever is Owens’s foray into a more soul-baring sensibility and places the artist directly in the sightlines and heartlines of his listeners. The album (as well as 2017’s “Need You,” a collaboration with the multi-hyphenate musician Chris Cohen) was written on the heels of his experience touring Premium with his band and was recorded across the latter half of last year. The tours—which included opening shows for bands like Whitney, Big Thief, Teenage Fanclub, Luna, Nick Hakim and Lucius—taught him much about feel and interaction. Further fueled by a desire to escape from the glow of screens and to embrace a sense of limitation, he quickly developed a new set of songs for his band and recorded them on a Tascam four-track cassette recorder at his parents’ house in North Carolina. Owens then borrowed an eight-track reel-to-reel tape recorder from a friend, rented a house in upstate New York, and took the band – Brian Betancourt (bass), Austin Vaughn (drums), Adam Brisbin (guitar), and Hannah Cohen (backup vocals) – there to record the new album in July of 2017. The limitations of the method - Sam even banned tuning pedals - focused the recording process on the vibe he had achieved on the original four-track recordings. Whether driving across America, navigating the bustle of his adopted NYC home, playing festival stages with rock legends, or getting back to basics in his parents’ garage, no matter where Sam Evian goes, there he is…forever. fter separating from his partner of 10 years, saxophonist Darius Jones set out on tour “to capture a moment in time, to crystallize the beginning of something at the end of something else.” Born from a live performance—his last night on tour—Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation) unearths a deep and profound vulnerability that isn’t just personal but also delves into the macro-level divisiveness of our current political climate, evoking sadness, rage, and confusion while still holding for glimmers of hope for the future.

Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation) is meant to be heard in full, from front to back. Only 2 tracks will be streaming on DSPs. Features an unreleased composition by Georgia Anne Muldrow.

“…The most visceral and distinctive alto saxophonist of this era.” – Giovanni Russonello, New York Times

With four of its five tracks, Jones selects compositions from artists who are not just unapologetically Black but also notably ones that he regards as “world builders.” From Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, and Roscoe Mitchell right up through the present with Georgia Anne Muldrow, Alchemy draws immeasurable strength from each of these artists who dared to envision and create an entire universe unto themselves, on their terms. With “Figure No. 2,” Jones offers us a modern-day version of the blues. Courtesy of Muldrow, her refrain encapsulates the vast breadth of the Black experience in America, transforming our deep-seated pain into our beauty and armor of resilience. Jones also proudly rests on the shoulders of Coleman and Mitchell, two of this music’s known improvisers who often stood alone in this music’s ever-changing landscape. He pays homage to Mitchell with “Noonah,” which in the late 1970s was initially met with jeers from an audience, that is, until his 21+ minute long version overtook them. On Alchemy, Jones balances the emotional heft of closure with the simple act of standing alone as he taps into an unknown power of his lone voice, finding a newfound strength and enthusiasm that will carry him — and its listeners — beyond the uncertainty and doubt of not knowing.

JJJJJerome Ellis ‘The Clearing’ A conceptual and musical tour de force that explores how stuttering, blackness, and music can be practices of refusal against hegemonic governance of time, speech, and encounter.

With The Clearing, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and writer JJJJJerome Ellis establishes a new metaphor that frames speech dysfluency—stuttering in particular—as a space for possibility rather than a pathology. First introduced in his 2020 essay “The clearing: Music, dysfluency, Blackness and time” in The Journal of Interdisciplinary Voice Studies, Ellis presents “The Clearing” as a concept that challenges us to reimagine dysfluency in speech and question how speech and articulation impact how we exist in the social realm. Ellis speaks with a block stutter, which manifests as intervals of silence in his speech. He calls these intervals “clearings.” In the opening section of the essay, Ellis argues that stuttering—much like music—challenges and “breaks up” time as we know it: “My thesis is that Blackness, dysfluency and music are forces that open time. Opening brings possibilities: temporal refusal, temporal escape, temporal dissent.” Ellis goes on to suggest that disabled speakers and certain types of people, especially Black folks, are subjected to related forms of temporal regulation and oppression that seek to pathologize and criminalize: “Temporal subjection enacted against Black people occurs in many spheres. Brittney Cooper examines several in her work: Black women’s reproductive health; legal and extralegal murders of Black people; racially skewed correlations between zip code and life expectancy; and the conceptualization of history itself.”

What do speech and articulation say about us and our humanity? Who has the power to shape the rules of speech and decide what forms of articulation are considered “standard,” “traditional,” and “acceptable”? Why do these same rulemakers have the power to regulate us? Recorded in various bedrooms over the course of several months and setting the text of Ellis’s essay to music, The Clearing is a haunting and expansive series of reflections on the questions of speech, articulation, and the power behind both. The album opens with “Loops of Retreat,” a stunning piece that utilizes atmospheric tones with Hip Hop drums and deep bass, connecting those sounds with references ranging from Bernie Mac to W.E.B. Du Bois’s The Souls of Black Folk. Expanding on Harriet Jacobs’s idea of the “loophole of retreat,” Ellis positions Black music and speech as disruptors of “conventional” time and as tools to map out new means of communication and activity. Harriet Jacobs reminds us that Black loops in Black music (including but not limited to rap and house) are always Black loop(hole)s of retreat; that Black music, like Black escape, is a never-ending activity and never an achievement. And when the Black stutterer loops a syllable (m-m-m-m-m-mother), this too is a Black loop, Black music, Black activity. The Clearing is a conceptual and musical tour de force that combines Jazz with the narratives of enslaved Africans, and experimental electronics with historical accounts of Black rebellion. The album centers speech but uses it as a starting point to not only depathologize dysfluent speech but to build new tools to critique anti-Blackness, linear time, culture, and power in our society. Ellis says of the project: “I hope this album offers the listener some of what my stutter offers me: an opportunity to imagine new ways of being in time.” The Clearing is co-produced by NNA Tapes and The Poetry Project. The album will be released in tandem with a book published by Wendy’s Subway, the eighth title in the Document Series, an interdisciplinary publishing initiative that highlights work by time-based artists in printed form.

"Especially in this time of isolation we need to remind ourselves of the importance of art, just how magical a medium sound is to express, to raise and answer question marks, to open and mend the soul… it’s the most universally speaking of all languages as it knows no borders."

At a time of global separation, Erased Tapes founder and sonic explorer Robert Raths stitched together a project putting what is most important at the forefront — connection. This collection of works by undisclosed artists from the roster gives space and time to appreciate art at its most honest. By shedding the information noise usually attached to release cycles and by bringing music back to the magic of sound, we're presented with an opportunity for exploration when we need it most.

Robert spoke to Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC 6Music about how releasing music without revealing its origin through the 20・・--0 morse code series enabled him to share what him and the artists have been working on in real-time as opposed to the usual delays that come with releasing music. "All the information, all that noise… As much as it can help give context, it also takes something away. It tends to cloud your senses and take away from the magic of when you first hear something that’s completely unknown to your ears. How wonderful a sensation it is to just listen and let the music speak for itself without prejudice or the need for any references." — Robert Raths

As The Reds, Pinks & Purples Glenn Donaldson - the man with the lengthy Discogs page - decided to find his way out of the wilderness following some big and small personal tragedies and the demise of his former bands. Originally released on CD only by 4AD Records in 2002, Second Language Music present this first vinyl issue of 'Writers Without Homes.' The 6th album by the Anglo-French band, Piano Magic, is notable not only for featuring the first recording in 30 years by long-lost "freak folk" doyenne, Vashti Bunyan but also an early appearance by John Grant who, of course, went on to much bigger things. There are further guest appearances by the German electronic duo, Tarwater, Robert Johnston from arch-rock band, Life Without Buildings, Charlotte Marionneau of Le Volume Courbe, Paul Anderson of Tram and Suzy Mangion. The late Spanish film director, Bigas Luna (for whom the band provided the soundtrack to his 'Son De Mar' movie) introduces the track, 'Already Ghosts.' The original album artwork has been completely redesigned for this release by Martin Andersen/Andersen M Studio (formerly of 4AD in-house design studio, v23).

'Postal' from the album was recently covered by the Danish indie rock group, Efterklang, on the 4AD 40th anniversary album, 'Bills & Aches & Blues' (out now on 4AD).

RELEASE DATE: 11.05 2021 Storytelling is power. Unable to perform their rootsy

brand of Americana for crowds of people in live settings for more than a year, The Steel Wheels turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. The result is an ongoing project, represented here in Everyone A Song, Vol. 2 and an accompanying podcast, We Made You a Song, in which songwriter Trent Wagler collects the personal experiences of fans and forges them into that most enduring yet ephemeral format we call “song.”

Inevitably, these songs celebrate connection. Each was commissioned for a specific relationship or event, a birth, a wedding, a memory of home, yet the emotions evoked are universal. Building on the work begun with Vol. 1, the nine songs of Vol. 2 also have an identity of their own, with themes that reflect the zeitgeist of a country dealing with tragedy and unsettling change. Lead off track Where I’m From introduces the tension between nostalgia and progress while showcasing the band’s deft balance of traditional instrumentation and driving rhythm. In Time Is All I Need, a folksy new-soul anthem, Wagler sings, “It Takes Time, Sometimes so much time, To welcome a reason not to stay the same.” The Steel Wheels, never content to stay still, continue to move forward with intention and authenticity. To write another’s story is to truly see them and recognize our shared humanity. In doing so, The Steel Wheels are attempting to subvert the divisions of the attention economy and create connections of beauty through the power of song.

PRAISE FOR EVERYONE A SONG

“With Everyone A Song, the Steel Wheels have risen to the occasion, offering poignant moving stories of their fans (and friends).” —Lyric Magazine UK “With strong compositions, stellar musicianship and harmony vocals that are particularly impressive when considering the remote process employed to record and mix them, Everyone A Song, Vol. 1 succeeds with anticipation for a second volume.” —Country Standard Time “Wagler and the rest of the Steel Wheels have found a way to make the most out of what’s been dealt to all of us in a difficult year. In doing so, they’ve found a way to not only bring their music closer to their fans, but to bring their fans closer to each other.” —No Depression
