CD / LP STREET DATE: 10/16/2020 Steep Canyon Rangers are Asheville, North Carolina’s GRAMMY® winners, perennial Billboard chart-toppers, and frequent collaborators of the renowned banjoist (and occasional comedian) Steve Martin. Since coming onto the bluegrass scene at the dawn of the millennium, Steep Canyon Rangers have been on a journey and continue to push the boundaries of the genre. Their newest work, Arm in Arm, finds the band in a unique position where their sound is much more Americana than their bluegrass origins. Produced by Brandon Bell (Zac Brown, John Prine) and featuring Oliver Wood of the Wood Brothers and Michael Bearden (music director for Michael Jackson), the Rangers continue to hone their craft with unlikely collaborators while developing a sound that is uniquely their own.

In 1961 Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded their version of Johnny Otis’ “Every Beat of My Heart”. Because the group was without a record label, a local Atlanta label, Huntom Records, pushed the single and got a distribution deal with Vee-Jay Records to release the single. During this time, the group moved to New York where they auditioned for Bobby Robinson’s Fury Records. Upon learning that “Every Beat of My Heart” was already becoming a hit and cutting the group off of profits, Robinson had the group re-record the song and re-release it on Fury Records. Both versions made the Billboard charts, with the Huntom/Vee-Jay version reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Prior to the re-release on Fury Records, the group changed their name to Gladys Knight & the Pips. Later in 1961, the newly christened quartet released the single, “Letter Full of Tears”, which became another top 40 hit in early 1962.

BIG THIEF

U.F.O.F.

U.F.O.F., F standing for ‘Friend’, is the name of the highly anticipated third record by Big Thief, released by 4AD on May 3rd. The New York-based band, featuring Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums), has spent the last 4 years on an incessant world tour, winning the devotion of an enthusiastic and rapidly expanding audience. Their songs represent an emotional bravery and realness that weaves intimate relationships with the listener, a phenomenon that has made them one of the most widely-respected bands of the current era. Their first two back-to-back releases, Masterpiece (2016) and Capacity (2017), have been analysed, wept to, danced to, critically applauded, imitated, hummed idly, and shouted out loud. They have soundtracked crowded restaurants, difficult conversations, cowboy bars, yoga classes, night drives, and lonely bedrooms. U.F.O.F. was recorded in rural western Washington at Bear Creek Studios. In a large cabin-like room, the band set up their gear to track live with engineer Dom Monks and producer Andrew Sarlo, who was also behind their previous albums. Having already lived these songs on tour, they were relaxed and ready to experiment. The raw material came quickly. Some songs were written only hours before recording and stretched out instantly, first take, vocals and all. Others were explored in search of perfected moments of dynamic feedback and spiritual, rhythmic togetherness. A careful New Age sprinkle of mystical textures and stabs was added and kept in the mix only when all agreed that each element had become absolutely crucial to the tune. The completed palette feels classic, upfront and honest, with an occasional, welcome glimpse into the magic box.

BIG THIEF

TWO HANDS CS 4AD-0180-MC

Two Hands, a completely new, fully-realized, 10-song album by Big Thief, arrived just five months after their breakthrough U.F.O.F., one of the most acclaimed albums of 2019. In sharp contrast to the wet environment of the U.F.O.F. session, Two Hands had to be completely different— an album about the earth and the bones beneath it. The songs were recorded live with almost no overdubs. All but two songs feature entirely live vocal takes, leaving Adrianne’s voice suspended above the mix in dry air, raw and vulnerable as ever. Where U.F.O.F. layered mysterious sounds and effects for levitation, Two Hands grounds itself on dried-out, cracked desert dirt.

Anybody who has borne witness to Big Thief in the wild will find songs they recognize here. Much of the album’s tracks (“The Toy”, “Those Girls”, “Shoulders”, “Not”, “Cut My Hair”) have been live staples for years. Two Hands has the songs that I’m the most proud of; I can imagine myself singing them when I’m old,” says singer/songwriter Adrianne Lenker. With raw power, intimacy, and honor, Two Hands folds itself gracefully into Big Thief ’s impressive discography. This body of work grows deeper and more inspiring with each new album.

Christopher Parker & Kelley Hurt feat. Brian Blade

No Tears Suite Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA008 // DL 9/25/20; CD 10/16/20

UPC: 195269024123

In September 1957, 61 years after the “separate but equal” ruling of Plessy vs. Ferguson, in Little Rock, Arkansas, nine Black high school students finally broke through the threshold of Little Rock Central High School after a month of facing protestors and blockades by the Arkansas National Guard. No Tears Suite, composed by Arkansas-native and music teacher Christopher Parker and his wife, jazz vocalist Kelley Hurt was initially written to commemorate and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine’s historic enrollment and their continued courage and fortitude, which has inspired every generation thereafter. When the piece premiered in September 2017, the group of Grammy award-winning drummer Brian Blade, bassist Bill Huntington, trumpeter Marc Franklin , and saxophonists Bobby LaVell (tenor) and Chad Fowler (alto) was so successful in communicating Hurt and Parker’s vision, that the composers began to explore how they could continue to expand the No Tears Suite. Their solution manifested itself in a new collaboration with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, with the incomparable, Grammy-nominated arranger, composer, and bassist Rufus Reid penning the orchestral arrangements, flawlessly infusing the sweeping grandeur of the ASO’s 16-piece ensemble into the No Tears Suite. The live orchestral version of the suite that premiered in March 2019 in Little Rock will be simultaneously released as a digital companion to the album that is receiving a CD and digital release from the Arkansas based label, Mahakala Music. Written by members of the Little Rock community, for the Little Rock-based literary magazine, Oxford American, about a pivotal moment in Little Rock and civil rights history, No Tears Suite is the result of and a testament to a community that believes in celebration, perseverance, and growth, and serves as an enduring reminder of the progress made and the progress still required.

THE BETHS FUTURE ME HATES ME

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com The Beths occupy a warm, energetic sonic space between joyful hooks, sun-soaked harmonies, and acerbic lyrics. Their debut album Future Me Hates Me, forthcoming on Carpark Records, delivers an astonishment of roadtrip-ready pleasures, each song hitting your ears with an exhilarating endorphin rush like the first time you heard Slanted and Enchanted or “Cannonball.” Front and center on these ten infectious tracks is lead singer and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes. Stokes has previously worked in other genres within Auckland’s rich and varied music scene, recently playing in a folk outfit, but it was in exploring the angst-ridden sounds of her youth that she found her place. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.”

From the irresistible title track to future singles “Happy Unhappy” and “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” Stokes commands a vocal range that spans from the brash confidence of Joan Jett to the disarming vulnerability of Jenny Lewis. Further honeying Future Me Hates Me’s dark lyrics that explore complex topics like being newly alone and the self-defeating anticipation of impending regret, ecstatic vocal harmonies bubble up like in the greatest pop and R+B of the ‘60s, while inverting the trope of the “sad dude singer accompanied by a homogenous girl-sound.” All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y. “There’s a lot of sad sincerity in the lyrics,” she continues, “that relies on the music having a light heart and sense of humor to keep it from being too earnest.” Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh. “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves—and then apologizing for it.” The result is nothing less than one of the standout records of 2018. The Phoenix Foundation have lived many lives. From high school distortion addicts to indie folk trippers to masters of motorik dream pop. It’s been five years since their last album, Give Up Your Dreams, but that downtime has been well spent. The New Zealand outfit have been writing, recording, touring with a Symphony Orchestra, creating the acclaimed soundtrack for Taika Waititi's Hunt For The Wilderpeople, building shrines to light, creating scores for VR, producing other bands and, that most lockdown-friendly activity, baking sourdough. Slowly, when they could, the six old friends found time to work together in studios, garages, forests, and sheds to put together the concise ten song set of that is Friend Ship. “We took such a long break after Give Up Your Dreams that when we did decide to make a new record we all felt it needed to be in some esoteric sense different,” says co-lead singer Samuel Flynn Scott. “To me that meant returning to something more focused. Honing in on the songs before we went deep into the arrangements and freaky sounds.” And the results reflect this approach too. Whilst Friend Ship, as you would expect, weaves seamlessly between dreamy introspective pop, stretched out grooves and psychedelic rock, it also exists as a collection of masterfully crafted songs. Friend Ship features vocals from Nadia Reid, Tiny Ruins’ Hollie Fullbrook and Anita Clark aka Motte plus sumptuous string arrangements performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

FRUIT BATS // MOUTHFULS SIDE A Rainbow Sign / A Bit Of Wind / Magic Hour / The Little Acorn / Track Rabbits SIDE B Union Blanket / Lazy Eye / Slipping Through The Sensors / Seaweed / When U Love Somebody

• Limited edition INDIE RETAIL pressing on straw colored vinyl • Alternate album cover • Contains the HIT “When U Love Somebody” “Around the making of the album, Fruit Bats had coalesced into a duo with Gillian Lisée and myself. It was sort of like our own mini cocaine-free version of Rumors. She wrote the bridge to ‘Magic Hour,’ which is totally about her. We also co-wrote ‘Track Rabbits’ together which is still one of my favorite things I've ever done and probably my favorite song on Mouthfuls.” “I wrote ‘When U Love Somebody’ at the very last minute right before we started to record. It was kind of the throwaway track, which of course became by far the most popular song on the album and still probably the most popular Fruit Bats song, I was just trying to make something that sounded like Ray Davies, or even more specifically The Beatles’ ‘Two of Us.’ Also, I spelled ‘you’ with a ‘U’ to reference Prince. People still like dancing to this one at our shows and I’m still cool with playing it.” “Brian Deck was the wizard on this one, plain and simple. I really just wanted to make something that sounded like Nilsson or Ray Davies or psychy-folky, but Brian had the concept for folding in electronics and weirdness. There’s a lot of headphone ear candy on this record, which at times sounds really small-sounding at first listen but is really pretty orchestrated.”

M WARD // TRANSFIGURATION OF VINCENT SIDE A Transfiguration, No. 1 / Vincent O'Brien / Sad, Sad Song / Undertaker / Duet For Guitars, No. 3 / Outta My Head / Involuntary SIDE B Helicopter / Poor Boy, Minor Key / Fool Says / Get To The Table On Time / A Voice At The End Of The Line / Dead Man / Let's Dance / Transfiguration, No. 2 This, M. Ward's third album, places him in the forefront of a modern movement that is clearly progressive while simultaneously sounding regressive, feeling dusty with age, and manifesting a genius that is pure and untempered. His music defies description except to say it is coming from somewhere seeped in the early blues with a Neil Young overlay and the feel of country, blues, pop, and folk. I am beginning to believe, the more I listen to this album, that if Neil Young heard it he would say: "That's it...that is what I was trying to sound like...listen to those chord progressions and chord changes...that's it". “Some time in 2035, I'm going to pull this album out, and it's going to sound just as good as it does now. There's something running through it that broadcasts timelessness and defies genre constraints.” -- Joe Tangari, Pitchfork Media

M. Ward makes beautiful music--sounds like you have never encountered--and he sings along with the melodies as if he can't help himself. Who could if they had this much soul? It is all coming from a very deep place inside him and you owe it to yourself before you pass--the main issue he is addressing on this album--to hear these songs because they are the most soulful and melodic tunes you will have heard in quite some time. This man lives in his own songful world and I can't thank him enough for sharing it with us on Transfiguration. If you put this album on your turntable it will be a long time before you take it off. The more you listen the deeper it gets--just like M. Ward, I suspect. This is genius, pure genius, and you need to hear it.

Thirteen tracks of intricate, dexterous and, incredibly fun punk-inspired emo tunes, the self-titled album sees the Montreal quartet settling into themselves, realizing the path they’ve been searching for and writing the best music of their career as a result. Anthemic emo serves as the backdrop to guitarist and vocalists Vincent Dufour and Joseph Therriault’s honest and vulnerable lyricism, the two sharing the lyric writing process on a record that tackles human nature; exploring self-doubt, resentment, complex relationships, climate change, the waning of youth and more, yet the band never lose the sense of playfulness and fun that is omnipresent in their live show, an undeniably electric energy that stems from being a group of close friends before anything else. A record made to represent where the band are, rather than worry about how they will be perceived, Gulfertrusted their gut and wrote what came naturally. The result is their best work to date, a record that focuses less on ultra-technical musicianship and more on structure, space and feel—all while remaining as technically proficient and intricate as their previous work.

Loraine James follows up 2019’s acclaimed 'For You And I’ album with a new four track EP, ‘Nothing’. Her chosen collaborators empathetically extend the feeling in her music with their own unique energies; Uruguayan singer and producer Lila Tirdo a Violeta, Farsi language rapper Tardast, and HTRK front-woman Jonnine Standish. The arc of the EP starts with Lila Tirdo’s numb, repeated vocal on the title track. On ‘Marg’, meaning “death” in Farsi, the tense drama of Tardast's despairing poetry describes the hopelessness of refugee experience, cold chords rolling sympathetically around his words. Jonnine shifts the mood with ‘Don’t You See It?’, recounting a moment of clarity which allowed her to leave a destructive relationship, Final track ‘The Starting Point‘ finds Loraine solo, with punched in bass and chaotic drums pushed through fxs that settle into a plaintive piano melody, the first and only instrument she says she's able to play “properly”.

DANGER GROVE / Want, For Nothing Web: dangerously.ca

T: @DangerGrove

It began with one simple remix. Colorado-based beatmaker/producer Lizard “Liz” Grove stumbled upon a track by Ottawa-via-Halifax alt-rap legend Jesse Dangerously she liked, applied her magical treatment and sent it back to him, much to his approval. Sounds innocent enough, huh? Well, that spontaneous gesture soon exploded into the full-fledged collaboration known as Danger Grove, and a 10-track debut album called Want, For Nothing that is sure to alter the perception of Canadian hip-hop. With Liz providing the sonic foundation for Jesseʼs often brutally confessional rhymes, the pair build on their mutual love of groundbreaking artists such as Aesop Rock and spin it off into strange, new worlds where it wouldnʼt be out of the ordinary to hear Drake rapping with Neutral Milk Hotel. Just to back up a bit, Danger Grove really coalesced through the Nerdcore Hip-Hop Facebook group, which holds an annual competition that challenges a producer/vocalist team to create five original tracks in three-week intervals to be judged by their panel of experts. Despite facing stiff competition each round, Danger Grove was voted the overall winner for 2017, with the next logical step seemingly to release those five songs as an EP. However, with their creative juices now flowing, the pair put together additional tracks—several graciously featuring their Nerdcore Hip-Hop contemporaries—to flesh out a full album. What makes Danger Grove truly work is how these two artists who met online complement each otherʼs strengths so well. Danger Groveʼs Want, For Nothing is indeed the beginning of a beautiful friendship destined to produce more exciting, powerful and unclassifiable work with the potential to shape the future of Canadian hip-hop for years to come. All are welcome.

Higgins’ new album TOCSIN is full of thrilling opposites: A modern classical record with a punk/noise ethos, from a composer who has lived and breathed both identities. A masterclass of visceral genre-bending sounds, that are physical and delicate at the same time. Over the course of three large compositions, the listener is brought on a journey of constant surprise: as when the sound of violins dissolves into a halo of pure noise, more at home in an underground electronics show than anything that appears on a concert stage. And yet the music is written and performed with expertise, precision, and vibrancy. A new virtuosity inspired and created by the collaboration of these excellent musicians. Patrick Higgins is known in a few different worlds: as guitarist for the post-everything band Zs, as a solo performer of hypnotic/pyrotechnic electric guitar music, and also as record producer at his Future-Past analog studio. These chamber pieces are years in the making, masterful works of a high order.

These compositions exist in a deep working relationship with their performers: the Wet Ink Ensemble, hailed as the “Best Classical Ensemble of 2018” (The New York Times ); acclaimed pianist Vicky Chow, “one of our era’s most brilliant pianists” (Pitchfork), and the Mivos Quartet, “one of America’s most daring and ferocious new-music ensembles.” (The Chicago Reader). Intervals is the eighth album from Tim Arndt's Near the Parenthesis. For Intervals, Arndt's chose the family piano to begin the creative process. By placing less importance on the skittering rhythms, which propelled previous Near the Parenthesis collections, Arndt was able to focus more on the instant gratification of sitting down and just playing. These ideas became the backbone in which he then composed eight tidal tracks, mostly in the early morning hours in his East San Franciso Bay creekside home. In these sessions, Arndt utilized various synths, and percussion to provide additional depth and atmosphere to the tracks' original skeletal structures. Arndt says of Intervals, "The title has a dual meaning as there has been a decent period of time between my previous album Helical and the release of Intervals, Four years to be exact. This concept of time and the spaces between gives the title its other connotation, which is a nod to musical intervals and the spaces between notes. I think this becomes evident in my use of arpeggiation, which I feel is a grounding motif across the album." As with many Arndt's Near The Parenthesis works, there is a gentile hopefulness sewn through Intervals forty-minute runtime that provides much-needed solace in such unsettling times. Intervals will be out on October 16th on white vinyl, which is limited to 200 units worldwide.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Doug & Max HausuMountain @gmail.com 847-220-1755

BBsitters Club is a rock band based in Chicago that features Doug Kaplan and Charlie Olvera on guitars and vocals, Max Allison on bass, and Paul Birhanu on drums. The band orbits a network of HausMo co-founders Kaplan and Allison’s shared projects, including their duo Pepper Mill Rondo and the free-music trio Good Willsmith. BBsitters Club came into being in a basement practice space in 2015, but didn’t emerge from their rehearsals until years later, opting to woodshed and sculpt their songs to the point that they could perform live as a fully realized project — loose around the edges and improvminded by design, but dialed into their tight instrumental interplay and on-a-dime transitions between styles and genres. Adopting an equally combinatory and confounding approach to rock composition and live performance, the band makes progressive music that channels the goofy energy of a crew of close friends feeding off of each other and developing a shared language. BBsitters Club & Party, their first studio album, walks the line between earnest rock sincerity and tongue-in-cheek parody. With all instrumental tracks recorded live as a full band at Jamdek Recording Studio in Chicago, the album captures the excitement of BBsitters Club’s live shows and demonstrates the level of telepathic collaboration they’ve achieved over years of playing together out of the public eye. In their songwriting, lyrics, and vocal arrangements, the band embraces and ridicules tropes that have sunk into the rock lexicon over Artist: BBsitters Club the decades, all while loading their tracks with finely wrought deAlbum: BBsitters Club & Party tails and technical flourishes. Regardless of the genres they’re inhabiting at any given moment, the band maintains an abiding focus on irregular meters and tricky arrangements, while always preserving a constant sense of groove and forward motion. BBsitters Club & Party flows through CD Cassette a tracklist that begins with more tightly regimented songs and evolves into longer, looser pieces with unfolding, suite-like structures that highlight passages of anything-goes improvisation. The band designed the album to imitate the energy and format of their raucous live performances, replete with abrupt shifts in mood and seamless segues between songs, all meant to ensure that the audience can never predict the next tangent that the band might choose to streak off into. While the idea of the auteur rock songwriter has saturated 20th century music history, often embodied in one bandleader and a crew of players who perform their compositions, BBsitters Club operates as a purely democratic entity. The twisting structures of their songs and the juxtapositions between styles originate in writing sessions where every member contributes ideas to the conversation. The band builds their songs on frameworks that combine instances of closely interlocked instrumental riffs with passages of jamband improvisation, to the point that these vocabularies become nearly indistinguishable. The band’s shared love of jam culture manifests in the arcane lore and inside jokes they share with their show-going friends, the unique setlists they plot for each performance, and the streamable online archive of live shows that they’ve compiled since the project’s inception. As time has ironed out the distinction between high and low brow music, and styles previously considered to be on the fringe have reached more ears than ever through the connective tissue of the internet, BBsitters Club channels the “everything is everything” mentality of modern music fandom. As they churn through disparate rock vocabularies with reckless glee, a holistic oneness permeates their music — embodied in the sense of fun and camaraderie that has animated bands of all styles across the decades.

Two Hands LP + CD

It was early March 2020 and the Big Thief tour had just been cut short, so I flew from Europe to NYC. It just so happened that there was a little cabin available for rent right next door to Zoe and Brian in the mountains in Western MA. So I grabbed my truck and drove out to the country. As I settled into the cabin over the course of a month, I grew really connected to the space itself. The one room cabin felt like the inside of an acoustic guitar -- it was such a joy to hear the notes reverberate in the space . I got a hankering to capture it, so I called my friend Phil and asked “How’d you like to get outta the city and make a record that sounds like the inside of an acoustic guitar?” Phil said “100%” and by the grace of some of our dear friends, we were able to gather the materials needed. Brendan lent us about 45 tape machines. Eli lent us a binaural head (which looked remarkably like Phil), and Shahzad lent us a pile of XLR cables. I drove into the city at 5am on the 20th of April, scooped up Phil and then we filled my truck to the brim as we stopped and gathered the gear along the way back to Massachusetts. We unloaded all of the equipment into the small cabin and began setting up. Unfortunately, one of the first things that happened was the unstable electricity fried four of our tape machines, including the Otari 8 track. Bill tried to fix it at his shop in Sturbridge, but it was beyond repair. After almost three weeks of setup and troubleshooting, the studio finally was operating -- although the only functioning tape recorder we had was Phil’s battery powered Sony Walkman. We felt at peace with the idea that we might just be recording the whole record on cassette tape, but that would have meant no overdubs, so I’m grateful for the rescue Otari 8 Track that Brendan was able to dig out of storage and deliver to us right before we had lost all hope. I had a handful of songs that I was planning on recording, but by the time Phil arrived I was on a whole new level of heartsick and the songs were flying through my ears. I was basically lying in the dirt half the time. We went with the flow. A lot of the focus was on getting nourishment from our meals. We cooked directly on the woodstove, and we went on walks to the creek every day to bathe. Nine of these songs were written freshly during the recording session. We began and closed each day with an improvised acoustic guitar instrumental, and we made a collage of our favorite pieces, which became the first side of the instrumentals album. I’m grateful that this music has come into existence. These songs have helped me heal. I hope that at least in some small way this music can be a friend to you. - Adrianne Lenker

Kate Stables’ group This Is The Kit have created a name for themselves with songs that untangle emotional knots and weave remarkable stories. Their second album for Rough Trade Records, Off Off On, (October 23, 2020) is a beautifully clear distillation of Stables’ songwriting gifts. The songs are exquisitely astute, the album title suggesting life’s glitchy rhythms – “two steps backwards, one step forwards… Swinging between good places and bad places inside and out.” As the songs coalesced, she decided to work on the new record with producer Josh Kaufman, a New York-based musician, Hold Steady collaborator and member of Bonny Light Horseman and Muzz. Stables first met him when working with Anais Mitchell, their paths crossing again at Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner’s PEOPLE residencies in Berlin and Brooklyn. The result of their work together is Off Off On. Richly illuminating and acutely sensitive to the pulses and currents of life, the album shows This Is The Kit overflowing with ideas, energy and power.

John Frusciante releases the first instrumental electronic album under his own name on Aaron Funk's Timesig label. The record is dedicated to his cat Maya who recently passed away, a fellow traveller in his otherwise solitary music making sessions. He says "Maya was with me as I made music for 15 years, so I wanted to name it after her. She loved music, and with such a personal title, it didn't seem right to call myself Trickfinger, somehow, so it's by John Frusciante."

'Maya' is inspired by his favourite music: '91 to'96 UK breakbeat hardcore and jungle. It’s a varied and personal take with sophisticated, authentic production balanced against John’s acute sense of melody, an inspired blending of machines and samples infused with a joyful energy. After discovering early UK rave music, John started dancing at drum & bass club nights in Los Angeles. He then got into Venetian Snares' music at the Autechre curated ATP in 2003, eventually becoming friends with Aaron resulting in the Speed Dealer Moms collaboration which boosted his confidence in making electronic music. The process of making his tracks changed over time as John explains; “For a full year before I started this record, I worked within self-imposed limitations and rules that made the music-making process as difficult as possible, programming for programming's sake. After a full year of that, I decided to make things easier, to the degree that I could regularly finish tracks I enjoyed listening to, while continuing many of the practices I‘d developed. Throughout the recording of Maya, I would prepare to make each track very slowly, but would finish tracks very quickly. I'd spend weeks making breakbeats, souping up a drum machine, making DX7 patches, and so on. By the time an idea came up that seemed like the beginning of a tune, I had a lot of fresh elements ready to go." John says his solo music has changed; "I don't have that interest in singing or writing lyrics like I used to. The natural thing when I'm by myself now, is to just make music like the stuff being released this year. I really love the back and forth with machines and the computer." The fun he’s having on 'Maya' is infectious. TIMESIG / PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. PLANET.MU TWITTER.COM/PLANETMURECORDS DISTRIBUTION: REDEYE / WILL SAVERY will@redeyeworldwide.com

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America. In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Watts, Horace Tapscott founded UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension). In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an African-American since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (19711975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020… right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson and decorated jazz archivist Zev Feldman. With each Black Jazz album release, Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative.

ROLAND HAYNES: SECOND WAVE (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 23, 2020 This 1975 album is one of a kind in lots of ways. First, it’s keyboardist Roland Haynes’ only album. But more importantly, Second Wave has a sound—and line-up—unlike pretty much any other jazz fusion album to come out before or since. Anchored by a fantastic rhythm section of Carl Burnett (Cal Tjader, Vince Guaraldi and most notably Gene Harris and The Three Sounds) and Henry “The Skipper” Franklin (leader on a couple of Black Jazz titles still to come, plus Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Hugh Masekela, and many others), the album features dueling Fender Rhodes tickled by Haynes and Kirk Lightsey, who played with everyone from Chet Baker to Pharoah Sanders to Sonny Stitt, not to mention a bunch of Black Jazz dates. The cascading sound of the two electric pianos, one (Lightsey’s) often driven through a wah-wah pedal, gives Second Wave a special vibe all its own; there are not horns or guitars getting in the way of these mindblowing keyboard jams. Some folks might hear a little ‘70s-era Miles Davis when Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and/ or Herbie Hancock were in the band, and Hancock’s own Head Hunters album comes to mind (as well later fusion dudes like Jan Hammer and Bill Bruford), but Second Wave is sui generis. Our Real Gone reissue is remastered for CD and vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, with LP lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music, and features new liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975, that include a couple of quotes from drummer Burnett and bassist Franklin. First ever time reissued on vinyl!

(11-CD Set) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 23, 2020 Steve Wynn first gained fame as lead singer and songwriter for the legendary Paisley Underground outfit The Dream Syndicate. But his post-Dream Syndicate solo career is the equal of any indie-rock singer-songwriter you’d care to name. Now, Real Gone Music and Steve Wynn have joined forces to release Decade (yup, the Neil Young reference is deliberate), an 11-CD set that chronicles, with lavish deluxe editions, the guitar-driven albums Wynn recorded between 1995 and 2005, most of which have been long out-of-print. The statistics on this box set are mind-blowing: 166 tracks, 57 of them totally unreleased, plus 31 other rarities! That’s right…over half of this 11-CD set consists of either hitherto unknown recordings or tracks that have been almost impossible to find! As for the other tracks, they hail from the following albums: the American releases Melting In The Dark, Sweetness and Light, My Midnight, Here Come The Miracles, Static Transmission, and …Tick…Tick…Tick, and the German-only compilation entitled The Emusic Singles Collection (rare tracks from another European-only release, a collection of rarities entitled Pick of the Litter, appear here as well). So where do all the unreleased tracks come from? Well, during this 10-year period, Steve Wynn recorded dozens of songs – sometimes at home and occasionally in a proper studio. Many of those songs got re-recorded and revamped and became key memorable parts of his catalog. Other songs got tossed away and forgotten. For Decade, long-time Steve Wynn (and Dream Syndicate) archivist Pat Thomas in cooperation with Steve Wynn listened to about a hundred hours of unreleased tapes and compiled this amazing box set that not only includes remastered (by Mike Milchner of SonicVision) versions of some of Steve Wynn’s best albums but also the first American release of the two rare European only titles. And – it bears saying again – 57 previously unreleased recordings that not even hardcore tape traders have heard! And 31 other rarities that only the most devoted fan could possibly have. Several of these albums were recorded with Steve Wynn’s core band of Linda Pitmon on drums, Dream Syndicate guitarist Jason Victor, and long-time Miracle 3 bass player Dave DeCastro. Along the way, there are appearances from Green On Red keyboardist Chris Cacavas, Giant Sand’s Howe Gelb, indie chanteuse Barbara Manning, Chris Brokaw & Thalia Zedek of Come, Tony Maimone of Pere Ubu, John Convertino of Calexico, Rich Gilbert and many others. With so much material, you need a program…and so Steve Wynn himself has penned very detailed notes that tell the stories behind the origins of all 57 previously unreleased songs! Plus essays from box set producer Pat Thomas and several of Wynn’s long time bandmates. And a pile of previously unseen photos from Linda Pitmon’s archives – most of them taken by Linda herself. All inside a mammoth, full-color, 48-page book! A Decade of Steve Wynn. You need this. It won’t stay in print forever. Maybe not even a decade.

In

the early 1970s, Belgian recording engineer and synthesist Daniel Lacksman née Lanckmans recorded and released a series of pop music records, using early analog synthesizers as a central sonic element. Under an admittedly confusing array of names, Lacksman (who later founded the group Telex) created music that was equal parts innovation and ear-candy accessibility. Those often happy-go-lucky records gained some popularity throughout Europe, but their lasting influence can be heard in the music of Portishead, Massive Attack, The Moog Cookbook, and Air. And a casual survey online quickly reveals that these records are among the most collectible of their kind, with original copies commanding hundreds of dollars. Now, Real Gone Music is finally reissuing and restoring three pioneering Euro Synth-Pop classics from Lacksman’s 1970s catalog: Dan Lacksman and Electronic System: Vol. II (both from 1973), and 1974’s Electronic System: Tchip Tchip (Vol. 3) (also released Germany as Skylab). Though Moog-based electronic sounds would fall out of musical fashion in the 1980s, with the dawn of MIDI and digital technology, modern-day listeners and musicians alike have been rediscovering the music of Lanckmans and his peers; all three albums – as well as Lanckmans’ other records of that era and beyond – have been widely sampled by 21st century artists. Our Real Gone Music reissues have been mastered for LP and CD from the original tapes by the composer himself, and feature liner notes by Bill Kopp that include exclusive quotes from Lanckmans and photos from his private archive. Brilliant moog music!

Lacksman already had an album (Flamenco Moog) and a minor European hit (“Coconut”) under his belt when he recorded 1973’s Dan Lacksman, which is a true outlier in his catalog in that it features him on guitar (!) and voice (!!) along with his usual keyboard wizardry. As such, it’s probably his most accessible record for those approaching his music from a strictly rock background. An early version of “Skylab” hints at the grand version to come on Tchip Tchip; some of the album sounds like a Belgian version of Steely Dan, and at times you might even hear a little early Eno/Robert Wyatt/Kevin Ayers prog punctuated by a couple of drinking songs. Overall, it’s a progressive pop singersongwriter album and a bit of a trailblazer at that…which explains why original copies go for a mint. Out on CD and a neon green vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies!

SELLING POINTS • The Most Collectible Album in Lacksman’s Catalog, Electronic System: Tchip Tchip (Vol. 3) Offers More of the Composer’s Signature Blend of Synthesizer Kitsch and Keyboard Creativity • But Tchip Tchip Also Features the 14-Minute “Sky Lab,” Which Sounds Like It Came Right off an Air Record Released 25 Years Later, with a Little Pink Floyd Thrown In

While the first album Dan Lacksman recorded in 1973 was an atypical singer-songwriter foray, the second album from that year—credited to his pseudonym Electronic System— featured the full flowering of his synthesizer mastery. His hit recording “Coconut” had enabled him to buy a modular synthesizer, which offered a vastly expanded tonal palette— if you had the patience to re-wire for each sound you wanted to achieve. Which was the perfect set-up for a studio engineer like Lacksman…the result is an album full of sonic surprises, with each track presenting multiple, unique synthesizer tones and attacks, even on such nakedly commercial moves as his cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba.” An analog synth tour de force! Presented on CD and a yellow vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies.

Pretty much all of Lacksman’s ‘70s releases command a devout collector following, but none of them can measure up to the one he recorded in 1974 under the name Electronic System, Tchip Tchip (Vol. 3). While much of side one Tchip Tchip presents the composer’s signature blend of synthesizer kitsch and boundary-breaking creativity, ranging from the oom-pah sound of the title track to the wacky “Spider,” almost all of side two is devoted to the 14-minute “Sky Lab,” which sounds like it came right off an Air record recorded 25 years later, with maybe a little Dark Side-era Pink Floyd thrown in. A true marvel, this track is why original copies of Tchip Tchip are downright unaffordable…it’s not to be missed. Released on CD and an orange vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies!

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 23, 2020 As the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom made abundantly clear, Merry Clayton is one of the greatest and most distinguished female backup singers in rock and soul history, having sung with everybody from Bobby Darin to Ray Charles to Joe Cocker to Linda Ronstadt to Neil Young to Lynyrd Skynyrd (on “Sweet Home Alabama”). But her most famous vocal turn, of course, was her 1969 duet (“It’s just a shot away!”) with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter.” The notoriety she gained from that led to a recording contract with Lou Adler’s Ode label, and to this 1970 debut solo record, which took its title from the Stones track and featured Merry’s own hit solo version of the song. But don’t stop there—produced by Adler, arranged by the great Gene Page, and featuring Billy Preston on keyboards, this album is an overlooked soul classic, with Merry’s indomitable voice taking songs like James Cleveland’s “Here Come Those Heartaches Again,” The Doors’ “Tell All the People,” and James Taylor’s “Country Roads” to dizzying heights (she also turns “Bridge over Troubled Water” into the sanctified gospel hymn it truly is). For this reissue, we’ve pressed up 700 copies in totally cool, black & white “gray eye” vinyl!

The Frenz Experiment Expanded Edition

▶ Beggars Arkive is excited to announce the upcoming reissue of The Fall’s 10th studio album, 1988’s THE FRENZ EXPERIMENT. Available as an expanded edition on CD and LP, the releases both contain the original album, plus singles and B-Sides. The CD version also includes a previously unreleased 4-track BBC session and “A Day In The Life” Beatles cover rarity, plus a 24-page booklet with new interviews. The LP version contains extensive sleeve notes with new interviews. The notes included with both formats contain brand new interviews conducted by Daryl Easlea in May 2020.

In 1987, The Fall scored their first UK Top 30 singles chart position with their cover of the Northern Soul standard, “There’s A Ghost In My House”, and supported it with a series of career-best shows. “Hit The North”, one of their much-loved anthems, followed in October and then, finally, The Frenz Experiment – which contained these songs, was released at the end of February 1988. ▶ 2XCD

PLANTS AND THE ANIMALS JUNGLE PLANTS AND ANIMALS is an iconic Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids and emerged on the international scene in 2008 with Parc Avenue. The band has developed a varied cult following ever since, built on the shoulders of their self-produced records and their intense live shows. Parc Avenue was a critically acclaimed record (Pitchfork 8/10) released during the famous Montreal-is-the-new-Seattle music moment. This release set Plants and Animals as an incredible live force, a powerful songwriting trio and opened doors for them to tour the world many times over with people like Portugal. The Man, Gnarls Barkley and more. Three other releases followed and kept the band’s status up high: La La Land (2010) “they’re complicated and gorgeous [songs] and feel as innate as desire itself.” (Paste Magazine), The End of That (2012) “vibrant, constantly rewarding” (Spin) and Waltzed in From the Rumbling (2016) “... the strike rate is remarkably high” ★★★★ (Q Magazine). The band was shortlisted (2008) and longlisted (2010) for the Polaris Music Prize and received multiple JUNO Awards and ADISQ Awards nominations over the years. THE JUNGLE, their fifth studio album, is set to be released October 23rd via Secret City Records. Their shortest album yet and certainly their boldest, The Jungle is eight acts in a world full of noise. The album is self-produced and was recorded at Mixart, their own studio in Montreal. Every song is a landscape. The first one grinds to a halt and you become a kid looking out a car window at the moon, wondering how it’s still on your tail as you speed past a steady blur of trees. You watch a house go up in a yellow strobe that echoes the disco weirdness of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and David Bowie. You get pummeled by a rhythm then set free by a sudden change of scenery — the wind stops, clarity returns. You’re under a streetlight in Queens, soft-focus, slow motion, falling in love. You speak French now too, in case you didn’t already. Bienvenue. These are personal experiences made in a volatile world, and they reflect that world right back at us, even by accident. “House on Fire,” came from Warren Spicer’s haunting feeling that a friend who was taking too many sleeping pills might forget to turn his stove off. It was written before Greta Thunberg made the expression a rallying cry. Making music is their collective way of processing it.

OVERVIEW acts of rebellion is the debut album from Ela Minus. acts of rebellion is a call to fight, to live, to be present. An optimistic, uplifting album, it’s a record of small details and grand gestures, a manifesto of simplicity, a record brimming with life. A collection of songs about the personal as political and an embracing of the beauty of tiny acts of revolution in our everyday lives. Throughout, a sense of urgency and a call to arms is mixed with this love and appreciation for reality—because even revolutionaries need to leave space for simple human interaction. Colombia-born and raised musician Ela Minus, wrote, performed, and produced the collection entirely alone. Self-made and punk in spirit—Ela puts her own spin on traditional electronic music. She designs and builds hardware synthesizers and as a self-imposed rule, no sound in her work is generated inside a computer. Creating complex, technical electronic music that exudes a vibrant warmth, and a stark, celebratory affirmation that our breaths aren’t infinite.

KASBO THE MAKING OF A PARACOSM Release Date: October 23, 2020 Kasbo releases his second album with Counter Records, The Making of a Paracosm. Available on 2LP and CD.

Gothenburg-based electronic producer and songwriter Carl Garsbo aka Kasbo is the 24-year-old Swede with a hugely impressive 332M+ combined streams. The Making of a Paracosm features collaborations with artists like Frida Sundemo, Freja The Dragon, Nea and NOOMI, as well as a notable appearance from Vancouver Sleep Clinic. The Making of a Paracosm follows Kasbo’s hit single, “I Get You feat. Lizzy Land,” a stunning reflection of his sonic evolution and personal growth last year. Prior to that, his first full-length album, Places We Don’t Know, earned over 200 million streams, received praise from FADER, COMPLEX, Dancing Astronaut, This Song is Sick and more. The forthcoming record seems particularly relevant to our modern times, with Kasbo stating the album was inspired by him taking a break from the grind of touring to take some time to focus on himself. Kasbo has performed at globally recognized music festivals such as Coachella, Firefly, Life is Beautiful and more, while selling out major North American venues on his first-ever headline tour, including NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and LA’s Fonda. Last year he toured with dance music behemoths ODESZA on their run and capped 2019 with an epic set at Red Rocks Amphitheater. He was featured in Billboard Dance's Ones To Watch: April 2018 and garnered radio support from SiriusXM, KCRW, WXRT & KXCO among others. CAT NO: COUNT190 UPC: 5054429138535 Box Lot: 15

FAT TONY EXOTICA

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com Storytelling isn’t merely a vehicle for self-expression, it’s a mode of transportation. A two-way mirror in which we process gilded dreams and grotesque nightmares, the transgression of cultural taboos and the upholding of ancient tradition. It’s also the animating idea behind much of the greatest popular music ever made. Consider Exotica, the new album from Houston iconoclast, Fat Tony, the latest brilliant entry in that fabled tradition, what Outkast once described as “shooting game in the form of story rapping.” While hip-hop supplies the foundation of the Third Ward native’s assault on genre, his futuristic soundclash encompasses seductive velour soul, lecherous French chansons, fluorescent new wave, and even splashes of African pop and reggae; the latter two being the residual effect of Tony’s Nigerian heritage and a sojourn to Jamaica to record the Carpark Records-released album with engineer, Abijah Livingston, son of Bunny Wailer. “This album is an ode to the art of storytelling through music,” the polymath born Anthony Lawson Jude Ifeanyichukwu Obiawunaotu says, distilling Exotica’s essence. “Picture records like The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. Artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, or Bob Marley. Every lyric was carefully considered to make sure we properly conveyed each character’s narrative and motivations. I wanted to create a world of unique stories with room for each to be interpreted in distinct ways.”

Assembling a Manhattan Project-style team of experts, the atomsplitting production came via Tony and his longtime collaborator, GLDNEYE (aka Tom Cruz), and engineering via Livingston and Brooklyn’s Steel Tipped Dove. To make the Third Coast cypher complete, Bun B pops up on “What Wake You Up,” courtesy of a cross-island dash where Tony paid visit to the legendary underground king, then vacationing in Montego Bay. Each song is a rich and compact iteration of rap short fiction: Biggie’s “I Got a Story to Tell” channeled through John Cheever. Take lead single “Feelin’ Groovy,” a frantic meditation on lust, desire, and the notion of throwing it all away while puffing on a Black & Mild. Picture something like if Fat Pat fronted Scritti Politti. Or “Gambling Man,” where Tony one-ups the late great Kenny Rogers to tell the story of a ne’er-do-well schemer named Johnny, obsessed with the thrill of the roller coaster emotions before he discovers whether he’ll win or lose. If the Tom Tom Club knew every word to DJ Screw’s Wineberry Over Gold, it would probably sound like this. Bob Dylan once famously said that an artist should “always be in the state of becoming.” And in the case of Fat Tony, Exotica is the latest stage in an evolution that has included everything from a bravura turn on the first A$AP Rocky mixtape to co-hosting a TV show on Viceland, founding a DIY Houston culture magazine to subversively expanding the parameters of experimentally-minded rap. Here is Exotica, nine new stories, more untrodden ground on the left hand path, a novel strain ready to be unpacked. MUSIC FOR THE SPIRIT

Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes Heritage of the Invisible II Telepathic Afro-Caribbean improvisational trumpet-and-percussion duo Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes are longtime friends, collaborators, and tireless hustlers on the creative music scenes of New York City. Heritage of the Invisible II follows Navarro and Holmes’s rise to prominence as members of free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements. In March 2020 in The Nation writer Marcus J. Moore said "Irreversible Entanglements’ fearless music takes to task the police, American politics, capitalism, and racism." The revolutionary ethos that drives Irreversible Entanglements is no less present in Navarro and Holmes’s duo work, though their duo finds them much more wholeheartedly and jubilantly embracing their Latin and Afro-Caribbean foundations. Aquiles Navarro was born in Toronto during a time of great, political upheaval in his family’s native home of Panama. Dangers surrounding the reign of Manuel Noriega and the subsequent U.S. invasion of 1989 prompted the Navarro family’s exit, returning years later to Panama City in 1997. Latin folkloric music was fastened deeply to the family paradigm. After studying with Panamanian trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz (Fania All-Stars) and Panamanian-American composer/saxophonist Carlos Garnett (Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders), Navarro moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory (NEC). Before the semester had even begun, a friendship had kindled between him and another incoming new student, Tcheser Holmes. Since a young age, Tcheser Holmes naturally wove into the fabric of a tight-knit Pan-African community in Brooklyn centered around the spiritual organization, Ausar Auset Society, and his family’s dance company, The Bennu Ausar Dancers. From early on, Holmes remembers “playing and viewing music purely as a source of celebration and achievement.” As a teenager he enrolled in the Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege for pre-conservatory training, and eventually made his way toward NEC. After their tenure at NEC, both musicians relocated to New York City. “In New York, I've been a working musician since day 1,” recalls Navarro. “Tcheser and I played all over the city, from Uptown to all over Brooklyn, often booking our own gigs.” Dance clubs and subway platforms, The Bowery Poetry Club, the Latin Jazz Big Band at the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, and Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound in the Bronx – the two musicians developed a wide creative range. “We got familiar with a system where the rhythm is quantified,” says Holmes. “But I feel like we always remained ‘children’ in terms of viewing music. Kobe said ‘Be a Kid.’ We never needed to validate the process.” In Brooklyn in 2015, Navarro and Holmes performed as a duo at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event, where they shared the stage with the trio of Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), Keir Neuringer and Luke Stewart. The two groups made fast friends, and shortly after, came together to form the collective quintet Irreversible Entanglements. After two years of growth and international touring with Irreversible Entanglements, Navarro and Holmes coalesced around the idea of composing new, expanded duo music; and in Fall 2019 they booked two after-hours sessions at Brooklyn’s S1 Studios. “Each tune has a compositional background to it, but improvisation and the telepathy between us remains the main catalyst,” notes Navarro. From this open map, the duo layered samples and electronic elements from Juno 106 and Moog Grandmother synths over their acoustic improvisations, overdubbed contributions from poets, vocalist and instrumentalist friends, and added field recordings of themselves in conversation. To sculpt the mass of sounds they commissioned ada adhiyatma (aka Madam Data, a Philadelphiabased composer/electronicist who they’d met through a joint collaboration with Moor Mother) for a final mix. The resulting album – Heritage of the Invisible II – reveals Navarro and Holmes stepping firmly into the limelight of progressive music-making. SIDE TWO EL SACRIFICIO AL AMANECER NIÑA YAHEL

From Mexico’s most established and prolific jazz musician, Brownswood Recordings is proud to present the new album from Tino Contreras, ‘La Noche de los Dioses’. Here, Tino Contreras presents a sonic gift; a kaleidoscope of evolving and shifting spiritual rumination about life and humanity. His new work features seven new recordings, contemporary jazz themes liquiscing with 3/4 rhythms, written and recorded in Mexico City, 2020. This album is fresh - reinforcing the need to recognise, research and acknowledge the voices of the past as they still electrify us out of the numbing routine of the present, elegantly propelling us forward. Born in 1924 in Chihuahua, in Northwest Mexico, to a family of musicians, Contreras kicked off his fascination with the drum kit as a very young child. He was surrounded by music, raised by his father who led the OK Jazz Band orchestra, which inspired Tino to move to Ciudad Juárez where he formed his own orchestra. You could find Tino sharing stages with the likes of Dave Brubeck, Art Blakey, Louis Armonstrong and many more greats, experiences that have led Contreras to conjure up many a hypnotic track fuelled by an erudite, flawless rhythm section and unyielding brass and bass. ‘La Noche de los Dioses’ is released on released on LP, CD and digital on Brownswood Recordings on 24th October 2020 Musicians: Tino Contreras: Drums Valentino Contreras: Electric Bass Jaime Reyes: Piano and Keyboards Emmanuel Laboriel: Electric Guitar Luis Calatayud: Soprano and Tenor Sax - Conch Shell and Ocarina Flutes Eduardo Flores: Bongos Carlos Icaza: Harmonic Arps and pre-Hispanic Percussion Marco Gallegos: Acoustic Guitar Recorded at La Nueva Fresa Studios, Mexico City Mixed and Produced by Carlos Icaza

BOB MARGOLIN

STAR OF STAGE AND SCREENS This six-song EP builds on Bob Margolin’s current success with all acoustic music — 2019’s “This Guitar and Tonight” won a Blues Music Award for Best Acoustic Album. These new all-original songs take on the Coronavirus, isolation, and the halt of live music. He shares missing shows and friends, fear for the world, outrage, grief, new coping skills and new ways to present his music. He plays slide guitar on a 1930s Gibson and one on a National steel guitar. He embraces both traditional styles and new explorations, home recorded direct and again, no sugar added.

“I’d like to distract us from the largest world tragedy of my lifetime, but I must confront it musically. I thought it was ironic that musicians always wrote, performed or recorded songs about death, illness, natural and unnatural disasters — as entertainment. I tried to avoid it until my last album had two political songs on it. At its brightest, one song on this EP looks forward to an ‘after party’ someday. At its saddest, it mourns those we lost. A few years ago, I wrote ‘I Shall Prevail’ about the challenges of modern life and the will to overcome. Though today’s challenges were unimaginable when I wrote that song, there’s nothing to do now but what I said in the song ‘Love and Thanks’ here: I’ll stand and walk toward what I only hope is there.’ Let’s stand together with love and respect and cope, survive, and make new opportunities out of the ruins of ‘the old days.’ “ — Bob Margolin BOB MARGOLIN Star of Stage and Screens Label: VizzTone Genre: Blues/Americana Territory: Worldwide Compact Disc - EcoWallet Cat. # VT-SRR-05 Street Date: 10/23/2020 UPC: 634457033832

TONY JOE WHITE BAD MOUTHIN’ BACK IN STOCK ON BLUE VINYL!

Tony Joe White’s music is as primal as a lizard’s backbone. It echoes from the magnolia groves and bayous of his Louisiana childhood, and looms into the present every time he unleashes the molasses and tanned-leather combination of his guitar and voice. The legendary songwriter’s new blues-based album, Bad Mouthin’, comes straight from the swamps with its blend of classic covers (Lightnin’ Hopkins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and more) and five White originals, including two of the first songs he wrote—just before penning his breakthrough hits “Polk Salad Annie” and “A Rainy Night in Georgia” in 1967. Tony Joe White is a national treasure, too often overlooked and taken ❝ for granted. He has plenty more to say as evidenced by this effort.”

“Ryan Martin hits that rare pocket in time and captures perfection.” –American Songwriter Artist: Ryan Martin Title: Wandercease

CD & Digital: 10/25/20

TRACKLIST

Ryan Martin’s new album Wandercease is his most emotionally authentic and sonically adventurous record yet; balancing vulnerability and pain with a real sense of joy and optimism. The album’s genesis was Martin’s relocation from New York City to the more pastoral setting of the Hudson Valley, where he connected with producer Kenny Siegal (Langhorne Slim, Joseph Arthur, Chuck Prophet) at Old Soul Studios in Catskill, NY.

Siegal went deep with Martin’s new material, finding the heart of the songs and recruiting key players from the local musical community to bring the music to life. Songs like “Coma Kiss” and “At Dusk” are buoyed by the presence of singer-songwriter and classically-trained harpist Mikaela Davis whose vocals and harp are everywhere on Wandercease—merging perfectly with the intriguing blend of homespun Americana and modern-pop textures and rhythms. The album was mixed by acclaimed engineer Paul Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead).

DESCRIPTION After asking himself “how might I use the synthesizer to explore my own roots?”, Frankie Reyes restricted himself to the same set of tools as his debut album Boleros Valses y Mas, using just one Oberheim synthesizer, a MIDI sequencer and an effects unit: “I was inspired to create another album in a similar vein as the last one but consisting exclusively of my own short original compositions.” Inspired by the traditional music of Puerto Rico, the music of Sylvia Rexach as well as other Latin American composers, and contemporary composers of synth-based music including Mort Garson, Reyes’ compositions expand the boundaries of the imagination and the parameters of genre by bringing together traditional and modern styles. Each work on Originalitos is filled with symbolism referring to Reyes’ lineage and implied within the track titles, which reference his family, passing time and “Puerto Rican sweetness”.

2020! Now it can be told: the charade of a world without new MAGIK MARKERS records (six-plus years!) has finally ended. In these times of contagion fables and hacky blockbuster N95 disaster imagery IRL, MARKERS emerge again like three Lazarus from their three individual firmaments, just in the nick of the end of time. Never doctrinaire, on 2020, MARKERS capture a humid kind of chlorinated heat, playing like children of divorce at the condominium pool: strangers feeling out games to play, contests to have underwater, blowing by minutes without noticing at all. There is no more contemporary, they say, only emergency. So, here we are with results, the murky and public airing of songs, improvised and planned. Like damp concrete made up of the collected wet footprints of every single night since last we heard these MAGIK MARKERS. The results are amazing, sometimes, dare it be said: magical. “Surf’s Up” opens 2020 and is the redshift of this record, the reason we know light bends is because time changes it. We’ve flipped the event horizon; MARKERS are now freaked out in space on a spaced out bomb. It’s got a found-it-on-atape-in-the-attic vibe, echoes of CARPENTER’s Dark Star, CALE’s “Buffalo Ballet” and CASSINI’s namesake satellite taking cold old pictures alone in the airspace of Saturn’s sexiest moon. Here the MARKERS have found a reason -- a soft ballad that breaks into a piano/guitar improvisation that is somehow, in spite of itself, a revel. Beneath the shifting, roiling surface of 2020, there is even more serious business going on. What MAGIK MARKERS do best is listening, and as SHAW, PETE and ELISA worked with the tunes, they heard something taking shape. Less a style than a spirit -- a spirit that had to do with a delight in friendship and invention. Because man, in this economy? Friends, am I right? Making music. It’s all we’ve got. What matters now is JOHN SHAW’s monolithic bass; PETE NOLAN’s omnipotent drums and the magnificent immediacy of ELISA AMBROGIO’s lyrics and guitar. These songs are too contemporary -too emergency -- to be subject to notices of timeliness, but “Hymn for 2020” feels SO timely, the clean comfort and hot/coldness of this 2016 composition predicting the aseptic now. Maybe we’re biased, but we wish it went on longer. We could listen to it forever. Like when WINSTON and JULIA fuck in 1984, this 2020, recorded and slowly mixed in the first humming tinnitus years after TRUMP was elected, feels like an animal response to the intellectual luxury of despair. It explodes like a dream. We can all be forced into wage slavery, the dreary fears of our own mortality and the tender traps of love, compassion and family; this record, in eternal Markers fashion, stands as proof that work born out of the unconscious can transcend the individual concerns of meatsackery, and commute purity and relief in the untethered ether that we all contain. It’s been argued that mushrooms are the aliens among us; the space invaders we wait for pant quietly beneath our feet and in our dinners. These MARKERS, MAGIK by nature, have built 2020 in this same unassuming way, slowly, their imagination persisting, fighting like fungii through the cracks in the sidewalk of late capitalism. That work, from all of us, can thrive and survive until there are more mushrooms than sidewalks. It only takes a few years. “There will be no other end of the world,” poet CZESLAW MILOSZ said; and here we are at 2020.

Following on from last year’s break-through debut album, the Birmingham based duo quickly set to work on the follow-up, offering up another set of disjointed and delicious tracks that ranges from noisy garage rock in the vein of the Oblivians to something more akin to the much-missed surfy indie rock of Girls. Priscila B (guitar, vocals, songwriting) brings from Brazil her love of early Tropicalia and the kind of ‘let’s be bad’ attitude that can only come from a land chock full of Catholic guilt. Mimi B (drums) brings her love of stripped down, bare essential rhythm. If two drums are good enough for Peggy O’Neill then they should definitely be good enough for you. Together they bonded over a mutual love of 50s malt-shop-pop, 60s minimalist garage, no wave, fuzz and all forms of outsider art. ‘Art damaged’ isn’t a slur, it’s a compliment. Anything lost in translation with this transatlantic duo only doubles the charm. All rolled together with gum, glitter and stickytape the result is slightly wrong-sounding but infectious one-minute-garage-pop with gusto. One guitar, 2 drums, the basement band you always wanted to start! Robb Johnson & the Irregulars - Pandemic Songs Irregular Records CD

IRR114CD

5036265001082

Includes 16 page lyric booklet. Pandemic Songs is songwriter Robb Johnson’s chronicle in song of the unprecedented events of the first half of 2020. Pandemic Songs uses songs to provide a media-free perspective of contemporary history, with thirteen tracks written between March & June of this year, that record & comment on the global pandemic, from Robb’s local UK perspective. The songs are angry, sad, affectionate, elegiac, satirical, anxious, & compassionate. They celebrate our lives in lockdown & the endurance of our keyworkers, & catalogue the vanities, incompetence, hypocrisy & failures of those in power. Pandemic Songs was recorded with a socially-distanced pared-down version of The Irregulars; John Forrester on bass & vocals, Arvin Johnson on drums, percussion & Spanish guitar, & Fae Simon on vocals. The result is a powerful, visceral album, a significant creative response to these very significant times. Robb Johnson is now widely recognised as one of the UK’s finest songwriters: “An English original”, - The Guardian... Saint Mary (a fable about the origin of a virus), Monday Afternoon in the Paris House (March 16th, & a last gig before lockdown), 422 (lockdown has begun), One More Lockdown Day (lockdown continues), 5373 (the number of deaths from COVID 19 continues to rise), 89p (the government responds by promoting a Care badge), Disinfectant (President Trump promotes a cure), The Highlight of My Week (the weekly lockdown shopping), All the Bells Were Ringing (the nightly lockdown dreaming), Lockdown Jokes & Stories (three sad stories- Belly Mujinga, railworker, Mervyn Kennedy, bus driver, Louisa Rajakumari, teacher, & one bad joke – Dominic Cummings drives to Durham), Victory in Europe (May, & the UK achieves the highest rate of COVID 19 deaths in Europe), The Days We Don’t Forget (a proper remembrance), In Palmeira Square (June 17th, & lockdown is ending).

Jeremy Tuplin ~ Violet Waves

Trapped Animal LP

TAR025V

5055869547246

Jeremy Tuplin's TV-inspired third album comes with stunning 60's themed photography and typography with lyrics have been included on the record insert. Previous record ‘The Pink Mirror’, a satirical look at our failure to remove the rose-tinted spectacles when observing the world around us, might have been an entirely solo affair, yet ‘Violet Waves’ finds Tuplin entwining his band, the Ultimate Power Assembly, in his cosmic spiral. Exclusively recorded with the band who joined Tuplin on sojourns through Germany, Italy and two UK headline tours last year, their unfailing presence results in a more brash, bombastic output, espousing the electrifying drama of Scott Walker. Tuplin has always existed within touching distance of a wink of the eye, a tongue in the cheek, and even with the cataclysmic nature of the subjects on display here, Tuplin still manages to not take life too seriously. ‘Killer Killer’ is a feel-good depiction of a love story featuring a porcupine and a chinchilla, the porcupine being the femme fatale and the chinchilla, the ladykiller. Whilst, ‘The Idiot’ finds Tuplin remarking, “The rebels have continued to try to make sense of it / A treason denounced as some kind of astro-physics bullshit” in a nonchalant tone perfectly suited to those who choose to eschew science when contemplating the planet’s future. Fittingly, Tuplin closes with a death wish. “I’ve been thinking and when I die, I would like my heart cut out and projected into outer space / And maybe it’ll catch on and others will do the same / The entirety of the human race / With their hearts cut out and floating in outer space”. Jeremy, we have lift off. Back From The Dead, Break Your Heart Again, Space Magic, Killer Killer, The Inuit, Swimming, Cool Design, The Idiot, Sally’s In A Coma, She Speaks To Me, Violets Are Blue, When I Die etc.

“Watching Stefanie Mannaerts — watching her play drums and sing — kicks things up a whole ‘nother level. It is absolutely mesmerizing. It is mind-blowing. It is astonishing.” – STEREOGUM (Best Albums of 2019) “The Belgian trio’s second LP may be the best heavy album of 2019” – PASTE (Best Albums of 2019) "Potent and haunting, the dueling beauty of singer-drummer Stefanie Mannaerts' evocative voice with the layered distortion of her stringed counterparts makes for not only a gorgeous album, but also a unique one - perhaps no one else so far this year has achieved such a refreshing sound." REVOLVER (Best Albums of 2019) "urgent and abrasive" CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND “Mannaerts' impassioned, borderline histrionic range recalls Björk at her most acrobatic, and her shifting rhythms behind the kit are just as athletic” - POPMATTERS

To describe the last few years as a whirlwind for Belgian trio, Brutus, would be an understatement. Their monolithic sophomore release, Nest, which was released to overwhelming high acclaim in March of last year, has cemented the band as one of rock's most visceral and promising acts. Additionally, Brutus have quickly become a ‘Must See’ live band, led by drummer/vocalist Stefanie Mannaerts, whose massive and emotive vocals are mirrored only by her intense and dynamic drumming. Guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden and bassist Peter Mulders complete the magic circle with pervasive riffs, dynamic bass lines, and a ne balance between uneasy restraint and unrepentant aggression. With all tours cancelled in 2020, Brutus wanted to share their favorite live performance set with highlights from their rst two albums. Live in Ghent was recorded and lmed at their’ hometown show at Handelsbeurs Ghent, Belgium in May 2019. The performance highlights the young trio's incredible chemistry, explosive energy, and sonic precision across the entire 13 track set, further demonstrating why Brutus are considered one of the best live rock bands around. With an album cover depicting bassist Peter Mulders step-son, who wrote out their set-list on the night of the recorded show, Live In Ghent goes some way to giving fans a taste of what they have missed in 2020 thanks to the ceasing of actual live shows.
