Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Trevor Peterson at Fire Talk Records How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When the label first started I was playing in bands, signing artists I met on tours and really looking at it as a community building project. It’s still very much that, we’re trying to build a community of like minded artists and releases that share a common spirit. I’ve always wanted the label to be as big as possible so the music can reach the widest audience possible, the difference now is that we’ve built the relationships and have the knowledge to do that.

How did you personally get started in the music industry? I started as a musician, playing in bands, touring and releasing records on other record labels. When and where did the label begin? Fire Talk started in the mid to late aughts (we count 2009 as the founding year although in ‘07 & ‘08 the idea was brewing) in Denver Colorado where I was living and going to school at the time and by 2011 moved with me to New York City where the label was fully incubated.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? There are definitely no favorites! I think the one that sticks out most in my mind is the first Tennis 7 inch we did in 2010, that was the first time we really moved a bunch of records and saw something have a real moment and it was exciting to be a part of that. It was pre streaming and we weren’t releasing anything digitally at all at the time so the response had a completely different feel, something that couldn’t be replicated now for us. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Nothing too extreme, we just had Dehd play some shows from the back of a box truck in Chicago and a few random locations to promote an album they weren’t able to tour which was a fun promo op!

What is the meaning behind the name for the label? The label’s name in classic fashion is something I wish a little more thought went into, or maybe not I don’t know! But the short of it is while living in Denver there was a particular bar that musicians, filmmakers, poets, degenerates and general bohemian types would hang out at that happened to have a fire pit in the back, and a lot of ideas came out of conversations around that place. And so when trying to think of a label name the phrase “Fire Talk” came out of one of those conversations and it stuck.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I’m pro color, give the people what they want, you know! Feel like we’ve seen everything done at this point; my favorite thing we’ve done recently is a deluxe repackage of a 2020 release that we blew out the packaging, added a bunch of bonus material. 2xLP, raised spot gloss gatefold jacket full printed inner sleeves so basically 8 places for artwork and then a really fun galaxy swirl color vinyl. I think for non Fire Talk, the most inspiring packaging for me and the first time I saw anything like it was the first GOAT record “World Music” with the crazy die cut jacket.

How has the label changed since it started? The biggest change is that the scale at which we’re able to reach folks has elevated exponentially. From selling 7 inches on consignment locally and on merch tables to multiple territory worldwide campaigns. Of course the landscape has shifted as well which has driven a lot of growth and change for the label.

Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Is it ever increasing?! We’ve always made these two formats so I guess we’ll just keep on making them. No plans to do anything too crazy in the near term, let’s see what those year on year numbers say at the end of 2021 & we can re-evaluate!

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We’re a growing small team, myself a project manager and A&R and a marketing person. Outside of our team we then hire out for other services depending on a campaign’s needs whether it be radio, PR or digital marketing.

How would you describe the average fan of the label? I have no idea! “Likes good music” lol.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? I think the challenges shift on a monthly basis! Early on it was figuring out the best way to navigate cancelling tons of stuff; we had quite a few artists on the road in March 2020 that all of course had to make fast decisions in that period. After that it was how to maintain our DTC business while offices were closed and our city ground to a halt and now it’s navigating the ongoing production issues. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? We try to think globally so the answer is no in terms of the artists we work with and the music we release but we do try to keep the spirit of New York City and the Indie community here in what we do. If anything our city constantly inspires us: there’s an immense amount of creative energy here that I think we have no choice but to tap into. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? So many places! The internet of course is ground zero a lot of the time but as shows are coming back we’re looking forward to that aspect of discovery again. Show up for the opener always! An artist I’d like to rave about who has yet to play their first show and is a pandemic signing for us is Mandy, Indiana based in Manchester UK. Pummeling electronic post-punk and I have no doubt the live show will be massive. Top of the list! Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? It’s definitely a mix, I love to describe it as the best new music sections from your favorite local indie store. That said, we like to work with outsiders, free spirits, artists that might make indie rock, post punk, noise, whatever it is but do it in their own way.

In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? I think this is of utmost importance and should be discussed at the highest levels in our industry. While labels can make certain decisions to improve sustainability in our own small businesses I think the industry as a whole needs to come together on this sooner rather than later to drive any real impactful lasting change. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Both are very important to me both personally and as the founder of this label. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Streaming and the sheer volume of music released. It’s easier than ever to make and distribute music and it’s harder than ever to reach listeners. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We just did this! It’s called Open Tab and it’s not genre specific but does lean into new music, and part of the imprint is discovery where each release is paired with an interview and mix curated by the artist. We felt like creating more context around a release, and in the era of no liner notes it could be a valuable use of our resources for emerging artists. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: I have to shout out my local, which is Rough Trade here in NYC at which friends old and new work or have worked at over the years, and they’ve been big supporters of the label. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? “Fire who?”

The Asymptotical World EP is Yves Tumor’s successor to 2020’s lauded Heaven To A Tortured Mind, featuring some of their most anthemic rock moments to date. A bold outfit of variegated styles across EP highlights, from the progressive climaxes of “Crushed Velvet” to the breakneck pace of “Secrecy Is Incredibly Important To The Both of Them” and the new standard of contemporary stadium music heard on “Jackie”.

The dB’s

I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO KNOW 1978-1981 STREET DATE

10/15/2021 23 Tracks of Remastered Early Singles, Demos, and Live Recordings What we have here are home and field recordings of The dB’s. Most of these tracks predate the release of Stands For deciBels by two to three years and were the basis of the signing of the band to Albion Records (UK) in 1980. Some songs are being released to the public for the first time in this package. Now, almost thirty years after a number of these tracks first saw the light of day on Rhino Records, we find ourselves in the position of releasing the earliest of these selections from our archives to a whole new audience. It’s the first time most have been on vinyl.

It’s a rock and roll record. I’m categorized as Americana because this business loves putting labels on people. Yes, there’s a couple of country-ish songs on it, I do live in Nashville, and my southern accent is what it is, but I had an epiphany one day. I realized, hey, I hate dobros. And if I hear another song about a train in the key of G, somebody’s gonna get hurt. I realized I’m 58 years old, I’ve survived a horrendous car crash, I’ve had cancer three times, and this might be my final shot – so I wanted to go back to my first love while there’s still time. I went into the studio with Jonathan Bright (Raelyn Nelson Band). He played drums and I played the guitars and the bass. This time I declared that there would be none of my skilled session friends on the record. They’re all great players, but I didn’t want great. I wanted ME. Who ME is can be summed up by saying I’m a songwriter and an author. I’ve won the “Best Song” award in the Nashville Scene Critics Poll twice. My three books (including Cheese Chronicles, which I’ve been told is a cult classic) have four and five-star reader ratings on Amazon. I’ve written songs for Todd Snider, Jimmy Buffett, Jason & the Scorchers, Dan Baird and others. I played in Government Cheese from ’85 to ’92. I played in the bisquits (with Will Kimbrough) from ’92 to ’94, and we had the honor of making a record for John Prine’s label. I’ve made eight solo albums since then (counting this new one) and I’ve made three albums with a side project band called Daddy (again with Will Kimbrough). I’m 5’10”, I like Ray Davies, Bob Dylan and Randy Newman, I’ve been married 29 years (to the same woman, no less), Tourette’s makes me blink my eyes a lot, and I pulled my face out of a bottle nine years ago. I’m crazy (so people tell me) and my crazy self is what I write about, I write funny songs about fears (if you like what I think is funny), I write sad songs about fears, and sometimes those tunes are funny and sad at the same time. If I have any mission at all as a songwriter, some higher purpose, it’s that I seek to make other messed-up people feel less alone – the end result of that being that while I’m not everybody’s cup of tea, the people who like me tend to really really like me. The songs? My new one starts off with “Pay it Forward”. It’s about perseverance in a world that wants to conquer you with apathy. “A Little Bit of Sex Part 2” is about the joys of post-cancer libido loss and finally the heat’s off. (I’m serious.) “I Got No Place to Go” and “You Don’t Get Over Love” are both about lost love. “Job Hunting While Depressed” is self-explanatory. “I Thought I Was Fine” is about my waking up the morning after a good gig, checking my email and finding out it wasn’t a great gig after all. (Thank God my drinking days are over.) “I Do” is about being on the road and missing your wife. “It’s All About Me” is about a narcissist in love, if such a thing can happen. “I Wish I’d Known You Better”, the only ballad on the album, is a salute to my late older brother. The record has two covers: “That Lucky Old Sun” and Cole Porter’s “Miss Otis Regrets.” I’ve never heard those songs done as rock songs before and they’re now two of my favorite tracks on the record. Oh… what else is on the record? I think that’s it. Listen, if you write about me, or have me on your radio show, or invite me over to your house for a cup of coffee, that would be fantastic, and I’d be much obliged. But hey, in a hundred years we’re all dust. What matters most is my family and my friends. I’ve been broke all my adult life, but when it comes to friends I’m a millionaire. I’ll walk into Dee’s of the 5-Spot and wind up hugging a half-dozen people. THAT’S what’s important, I reckon. Shattering your pelvis and several ribs in a car wreck and then having to beat back cancer three times will teach you to appreciate what you’ve got. If you’ve read this all the way to the bottom, I appreciate it. You know, maybe I’ll turn out in my dotage to be some revisionist hero for college listeners, like Mississippi John Hurt of something; then again, maybe I’ll flap my arms and fly to the moon. Have a nice day and God Bless. Tommy July 16th, 2021

Dos Santos City of Mirrors "Bringing together the unlike pairing of an R&B groove with huapango huasteco-inspired melodies, Dos Santos proves they have the chops to make something seldom heard before.” - Remezcla

City of Mirrors is a bold new collection of music from Chicago-based alt-Latinx band Dos Santos, which is comprised of bandleader/singer/lyricst/guitarist/keyboardist Alex Chavez, drummer Daniel Villarreal, percussionist Peter “Maestro” Vale, bassist Jaime Garza, and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Nathan Karagianis. Cinematic in its journey, the album was produced by multimedia artist and long-time friend of the band Elliot Bergman (NOMO, Wild Belle), and reflects sounds from across the Americas combined with Chavez’s compelling poetic narratives. Its 13 tracks consolidate the band’s unique identities, creative and cultural roots, and their penchant for honoring traditional Latinx music with contemporary compositional expressions and production techniques. It achieves the band’s mission to push against their own musical boundaries while also exploring themes of social justice, immigration, and contemporary human struggle. Chavez, a scholar who has produced albums for Smithsonian Folkways and conducted extensive ethnographic work on the music of the Texan US/Mexican borderlands (where he is from), articulates beautifully: “City of Mirrors is an assemblage… glimpses of tradition… reflections on our collective present… luminous echoes between love and solitude, hope and absurdity, euphoria and mourning. This album grapples with and transgresses these binaries because we have/and continue to cross borders. Yet, for us, the border is no metaphor — too much real staring back at us. We embody the border. We (our families) have crossed it. We (our stories) are coated with its residues. And so… we cross the border of self through our art – out of necessity.”

American Dreams Records BRETT NAUCKE MIRROR ENSEMBLE

“I guess this is my indie rock record,” jokes Chicago electronic musician and composer Brett Naucke - he’s referring to his new LP Mirror Ensemble, created in conjunction with Windy City mainstays Natalie Chami (TALsounds) and Whitney Johnson (Matchess). The album is still leagues W]\[QLM \PM KWVÅVM[ WN ¹QVLQM ZWKS º IVL yet - with its embrace of other collaborators and robust instrumentation - it’s a major departure from his earlier, fully synthbased output, even if modular synthesizers still form its backbone. For one, the songs on Mirror Ensemble sound like...well, songs, often boasting melodic vocalization, strings, and lush layered synthesis. To curate such a cohesion, Naucke utilized scenes from Andrei Tarkovsky’s foundational 1975 ÅTU The Mirror as a signpost for mood and I\UW[XPMZM 1\ XIQL W‫ ٺ‬Mirror Ensemble is bold and beautiful, demonstrating the peak possibilities of focused creation and trust in those closest to you. It’s of utmost importance to note that Naucke, Chami, and Johnson are very, very close friends, and that tight kinship is the secret glue for Mirror Ensemble - look no further than the origin point to see. “He invited Whitney and I over for wine and

cheese,” begins Chami, “and was like, ‘I have an idea for a record. He showed us clips from The Mirror with the vibe he wanted, and also shared recordings and other ideas. It was straight up like a fucking PowerPoint almost - like an audio-visual presentation for us.” Soon after the group set to creating recording at Chami’s house, playing MIDI parts Naucke had composed for viola, piano, keyboard synthesizers, and vocals. Film, photography, and visuals have always been important to Naucke’s practice, especially on earlier narrative albums like The Mansion, and it’s fully baked into the sound and feel of Mirror Ensemble. “I remember he played one scene with rain, ÅZM XMWXTM SQVL WN UW^QVO QV IVL W]\ WN \PM buildings,” recalls Johnson. “It’s probably 10 minutes, and there’s a convergence of [W UIVa MTMUMV\[ º ;XMKQÅK QUIOM[ TQSM I tattered quilt, a creaky bed, a look between two people - all of these components impacted the trio’s recordings - these were often used as guides for improvisations, which were overlaid on Naucke’s modular synthesizer and other pre-composed sections.

clear, as are the record’s sonics. From the outset of “The Glass Shifting,” with its evocative viola, textural synth, and duet vocals from Johnson and Chami, it’s clear that Naucke is upping the sense of scale and narrative. Juxtaposing that relatively short piece with the next song, the longform “A Look That Tells Time,” Naucke takes the listener through a massive range of frequencies and timbres. “A Look That Tells Time” moves calmly from organ tones, plucky percussion, and gentle viola to lush, patient synthesizer that swells and stirs. Others like “Sleep With Your Windows Open” are naked, like you stumbled into a rehearsal you weren’t meant to see, but can’t stop watching. On it, Natalie Chami plays piano and sings softly. Room sounds impart a sense of the space, and synthesizer fades in and out, just enough to make its presence known, but never overstaying its welcome.

Mirror Ensemble is Naucke at his compositional and conceptual best. It’s a synthesizer record, an orchestral record, and in some ways even a soundtrack. While not quite indie rock, it’s I ÅMZKM J]Z[\ QV\W VM_ \MZZQ\WZa IVL _Q\P Naucke’s adventurous, ambitious writing and recording, there’s no telling where his Naucke’s vision for Mirror Ensemble is crystal attention will turn next.

OVERVIEW Domino are proud to present Moondust For My Diamond, the exquisite brand new album from Hayden Thorpe, due for release in Autumn 2021. The new album follows Hayden's debut Diviner from 2019 and the Aerial Songs EP from last year. In contrast to Diviner, a record that very much favoured the inner world, Moondust… moves into a more natural visual and sonic palette, gazing outward on the world. Hayden lets new energies in, forging vivid new connections, exploring the meeting point between science and religion and the grand struggle for reality that shapes so much of our time. The music comes as the by-product of a coping mechanism, exploring the worlds of digital mysticism and the need to melt down reality and recast it when so much feels so unreal. The pastoral evolution of last year’s Aerial Songs EP hinted at an expanding palette that reflected Thorpe’s return to The Lake District, the natural environment he grew up surrounded by. These additional influences seep into Moondust…, along with Hayden’s involvement with Wavepaths, a pioneering project integrating music into psychedelic therapy, plus ‘hybrid’ gigs and breath workshops with pioneering breath practitioner Richie Bostock. It’s those surrenders, experiments and collaborations that make this such an enticing, sensory, soul-expanding album. Thorpe has made an album that is galvanising, reassuring, elegant, seductive: it oozes Big Cosmic Energy. Praise for 2019's Diviner

Q: What happens when you combine three women bassist singers from 70s/80s Swiss bands? A: a trio-full of sinuous music which reclaims the minimalist sound of the post-punk that they first created themselves. In September 2018, after decades of friendship, three women decided to finally combine forces for a show of strength. The equation seems straightforward, yet it's very powerful: Klaudia Schifferle (Kleenex/Liliput) + Madlaina Peer (Noknows) + Sara Schaer (TNT , Souldawn) = ONETWOTHREE. They sport an impressive heritage but they're also creating something that's unique and proudly their own - spooky, danceable, subtle, compelling music for a post-pandemic world. ONETWOTHREE's first album doesn't have a name but that's just as it should be for a band that's deceptively simple, mysterious and yet somehow familiar. Three women bassists/singers from classic Swiss post-punk bands dot their insistent, minimal music with drum patters, synths, chants, commands and joyous wordplay with their sometimes cynical, sometimes sensual take on leisure and consumer culture. The group is appropriately DIY, self-contained and self-produced - their debut was written and played almost entirely by themselves. ONETWOTHREE's songs blend into a whole, creating a momentum and their own kinetic, strange reality which fun-house mirrors our own.

DJ Manny is both known and unknown. Despite being firmly embedded within the Footwork elite and being regarded by many as a DJ's DJ, Manny has yet to receive the kind of attention his peers have. His joyous new album for Planet Mu "Signals In My Head" is set to alter that for good. Born in March 1990 in Chicago but raised in Robbins/Harvey, IL, Manuel Gaines first encountered Juke/Footwork before he was 10 years old while out with his brother at a party he was too young to be at. Dancing became a big thing for him, then throwing parties, then meeting Rashad and DJ Spinn when he was in middle school, then making his first recordings at his cousin Jonathan's house (R.I.P.) using FL Studios. His first release "Kush On Deck" came about in 2010 with DJ Rashad's help, when he was already a ten year veteran of the scene.

Here we are eleven years later and "Signals In My Head" marks a long worked for new chapter in DJ Manny's career. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, where he lives with partner SUCIA! Manny's sound has widened out and taken on a more romantic edge. He openly admits that his goal for the new album was "to do something that nobody (in Footwork) had ever done before which is an R&B love type of album but still keeping it footwork, juke, house, techno, with a few breaks. I just want people to know it's love out there." Tracks like "U Want It", "Never Was Ah Hoe" and the title cut "Signals In My Head" are strong standouts that show what DJ Manny means when he says 'R&B love.' "Signals..." also brings in a drum & bass flavour, something you'll find on cuts like "Good Love" and on "Havin' Fun" made with DJ Phil. When asked about D&B Manny shouts out LTJ Bukem as a inspiration. Tracks like "Club GTA" and "That Thang" also call back to the classic Chicago house of the nineties while "Smoke 'n' Fade Away" and album closer "At First Site" both recall the golden era of Detroit techno. Meanwhile "Wants My Body", created with DJ Chap, and "All I Need" are classic Footwork workouts sure to ignite dancefloors. Looking back at the selection, DJ Manny says he was "actually able to get the sound I wanted." His set up, a mixture of MPC, Abelton, Boss drum machine and synths like the Triton and Omni has served him well. Well aware that some in the past have thought of him as a sleeper - he notes "It's not a problem to be low key at all with your music, when you trying to better yourself and your sound." DJ Manny has succeeded in moving himself forward. "Signals In My Head" brings us back to the joy of Footwork as a dance, as a mid-west American movement and most importantly as a mental and spiritual boost.

‘Established!’ is the new album from RP Boo, his fourth full-length for Planet Mu. In 2013, Mu released his debut ‘Legacy’ – an acclaimed album that put RP on the international music map, acknowledging his unique role in the creation of the Chicagodeveloped art form known as Footwork. It’s been said that RP Boo is to Footwork what Juan Atkins is to Techno. The start. The Soul.

Ivory Surface Beauty Speak Of Sounds Another Night To Party REDEYE WORLDWIDE 505 ENO STREET, HILLSBOROUGH NC 27278, USA redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

RP Boo deliberately labelled his new album ‘Established!’ because that’s simply what he is. He’s thankful for being bestowed with a unique talent that has not diminished and continues to excite Footworkers both locally in Chicago and around the globe. Footwork remains a Chicago-centred art form, under-recognized at home, yet loved worldwide and RP remains its grounding point, with his productions being the place the entire scene goes to. On ’Established!’ RP looks back to that time when he was inventing Footwork, going out listening to disco and linking with the creators of house such as Paul Johnson. For tracks like ‘Another Night To Party’ or ‘Finally Here (ft. Afiya)’ he takes himself back in time to when he started DJing, playing ghetto house and being inspired by jack tracks. These moments were the foundation point to create his own style, elevating his sound into new territories for the future. With ‘Established!’ RP wanted to return what he soaked up over his journey and remind people of the layers of connections between various Chicago dance musics. Another side of ‘Established!’ is the ’battle track’ mentality. The battle dance circle of course comes from Hip-Hop and also earlier forms of American Black Music. Tracks like ‘Haters Increase The Heat!’ reflect this competitive aspect of Footwork – RP notes “I was feeling heat that I detected targeting me in the scene and I grab it and tracked it out and that’s what fueled the track.” He adds “I'm not bothered by haters and no one should be – there’s no valid reason to.” He goes on to explain the track ‘Now U Know’ – how the track takes that hater energy and uses it as a way to “set the seed for footwork battles” transferring the energy “to a dancer (who can then) display it with goodness of their art.“ RP goes on to indicate how this reflects Chicago – “I’m a witness. Without understanding how, you can have hate implanted in society.” Footwork to RP is a way to counter these social ills – “to then grow out of it and have people understanding greater change - to start heading in the right direction.” ‘Established!’ is also a record about Black pride, Black dignity, Black beauty and Black creativity. This is perhaps best reflected in the track “Beauty Speak Of Sounds.“ The track was one of the last compositions completed for the album and RP was imagining himself “in the grasslands of Africa” and he set about thinking how his “spirit” felt in that setting using sounds and grooves that he wouldn’t normally use. Ultimately ‘Established!’ is a snapshot of RP Boo letting listeners even further into his musical world – ”I want the listeners to really get close to something beautiful, to sit back and enjoy with family and friends.” PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. IZZY TRUE

OUR BEAUTIFUL BABY WORLD

Izzy True is also slowly learning to be gentle. Formed in upstate NY in 2015, Izzy True is a rock band of yearning currently based in Chicago, IL. The project has gone through many lineups over the years, always led by Izzy Reidy (guitar, vocals). These days, Reidy is joined by their friends Samuel H Goldstein (drums), and Curtis Oren (bass, sax, flute). In creating Our Beautiful Baby World (May 2021), the pacing of Izzy True’s songwriting process has slowed down since their prior Don Giovanni releases -- Sadbad (2018) and Nope (2016). Arranging with Curtis and Sam, Reidy says they’ve grown as musicians together, and their songs were given space to grow, too. OBBW exhibits eleven rock songs of melded collaboration, expressing the deepness of acceptance. These are the band’s most dynamic composi tions to date. The result is, Reidy hopes, to “sound like a bad drawing of a rock record.” Reidy is also a cartoonist, emphasized in their talent for storytelling (“Mommy”) and imagery that plays with the fuzziness of reality -angels, open pastures, and ghosts of old friends and lovers looping around their twanging yet patient vocals. There’s a desire to find okayness in this harsh world, translated in thrashing around, filled with wonder by the taste of a fresh guayaba (“New Fruit”). The inspiration for the soft-hard dynamics of OBBW may have come from Reidy listening to Thin Lizzy, along with the bleeding of the band members’ strengths and histories: Curtis as a courageous experimental musician in the DIY circuit, Sam’s expertise as a hardcore drummer, one Hallowen cover-set of System of A Down in a Chicago basement from another world, and Reidy’s childhood growing up listening to old love songs and country music. OBBW was recorded in Rock Island, IL at Rozz-Tox, a well-loved bar and music venue in the humble Midwest. Recorded and mixed by Ian Harris on reel-to-reel, Izzy True’s tunes returned to tape after Sadbad, which was digitally produced. The record utilizes the talents of Chicago music friends Jess Shoman (Tenci) on backup vocals and Andrew Clinkman (Spirits Having Fun) on lead guitar on “Four Good Ponies”. OBBW was recorded in the months before the pandemic January and February 2020, which can feel obvious (“I pandemic, don’t wanna hang out for a thousand years”) and subtle. The authentic limitations of reel-to-reel tape recordings give this project the aura of a time when live music was possible. In Our Beautiful Baby World, Izzy True creates ups and downs of instrumental chaos and intimate vocals, often asking vulnerable questions (“are you mad at me?”) to feel like we are in close proximity. Leading into big guitars, crashing drums, and gnarly bari-saxophone, this mixture of sounds imitates shifts in interpersonal lives, deep breaths, ticking time. There’s a closing of a bedroom door and flopping down on the bed, the world zinging in your heart, or galloping away on a horse as a grand exit from an emotional experience.

Rozi Plain has announced her new album ‘What a Boost’ will be released on 5 April 2019 on new label home Memphis Industries. The ten track album was self-produced with the help of a long list of musical friends including Kate Stables, Jamie Whitby Coles, Neil Smith (all This is the Kit), Chris Cohen, Joel Wästberg (Sir Was) and Sam Amidon. Rozi Plain has been making music since her brother taught her a few chords on the guitar aged 13. Raised in Winchester, she spent a few years studying art and painting boats in Bristol, where she began collaborating with long-term friends Kate Stables (This Is The Kit) and Rachael Dadd among many others on a thriving local scene. It was there that Rozi made her first two albums, 2008’s Inside Over Here and 2012’s Joined Sometimes Unjoined, each works of deliciously sad and beautiful pop full of heart-wrenching harmonies dotted with unexpected instrumental flourishes. Released in April 2015 on Lost Map and featuring contributions from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor among others her last album Friend was a deeply meaningful and wonderfully measured ode to memory, place, companionship and music’s remarkable power as an emotional salve. A companion album of remixes, unreleased tracks and radio sessions, Friend Of A Friend, was released in 2016. Almost permanently on tour, Rozi has taken her joyous live show on the road countless times around Europe, the UK and the USA, and has toured with a host of alt-folk luminaries from Devendra Banhart to James Yorkston. She has appeared at festivals including SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Glastonbury, End of the Road, Latitude, BBC 6Music Festival and Green Man. As bass player and backing vocalist in Rough Trade signed This Is The Kit, Rozi has been touring the world for the last two years, including opening for The National in the UK and North America.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Artist: Fire-Toolz Label: Hausu Mountain Format: Double LP, CD Retail Exclusive 2xLP Orange & Green Vinyl

Album: Eternal Home Cat #: HAUSMO111 Releases: Oct. 15, 2021

2xLP - Gatefold Black Vinyl

CD 8-panel digipak

Double LP packaged in a full-color gatefold jacket with two double-sided inserts including lyrics. Retail exclusive color variant - opaque orange & opaque green - limited to 100 worldwide and only available to stores through Redeye. CD packaged in a full-color 8-panel digipak. “The music that the Chicago experimenter Angel Marcloid makes as Fire-Toolz exists somewhere at the fuzzy border between peace and pandemonium. Across the handful of albums she’s released under that name over the last halfdecade, she’s made room for moments of blissed-out digital ambience, technical death-metal fantasias, glitch-scoured noise, and glossy AM radio jazz—often all slammed together within a few bars.” - Pitchfork (Colin Joyce) “In contrasting the black-metal gristle and cybergrind glitchfests that dominated albums past with dreamy swathes of new age-inspired ambient, Marcloid has essentially blessed us with a post-apocalyptic Pure Moods: a listening experience equally seething and soothing, deeply transportive from start to nish.” - Bandcamp (Miles Bowe)

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX HAUSUMOUNTAIN @GMAIL.COM

Over the past two decades, producer / composer / multi-instrumentalist Angel Marcloid has willed a vast ecosystem of music into existence at a rate that somehow seems to intensify as time goes on. Various solo monikers, collaborations, and band memberships stand as monuments in the landscape, focusing in on certain styles associated with each project — the Weather Channel jazz fusion / new age of Nonlocal Forecast, or the hazy vapor nostalgia of Mindspring Memories, to give a few of many examples. The music of Marcloid’s agship project Fire-Toolz sits as the bottomless pit in the center of the lush environment, drawing ideas and signiers from all corners into its depths. In keeping with Fire-Toolz’s role as the outlet for Marcloid’s most overloaded and audacious compositional gambits, Eternal Home enters the catalog as the longest and most ambitious Fire-Toolz album to date. Clocking in at close to 80 minutes, Marcloid improbably maintains the attention to detail and the crushing density that has come to dene Fire-Toolz from its inception, treating the expanded canvas as an opportunity to both dive deeper into genre-obliterating chaos and to tighten the reins around more direct, even accessible styles of songwriting. While Eternal Home builds on the omnidirectional compositional styles that Marcloid previously explored on a trio of Hausu Mountain LPs, the album gains power and momentum from its sheer overwhelming mass, becoming a statement of purpose that showcases all the reliable strengths and unpredictable left turns that Fire-Toolz continues to rene with each new work. The tracks that Marcloid weaves into the mosaic composite of Eternal Home range from ights of ornate prog rock / jazz fusion shredding, to brief bursts of pent up energy with an almost grindcore ferocity in their shrieking vocals and pummeling blastbeats, to extended collages of fast-scrolling sound design, to songs that zero in on a style in the neighborhoods of emo and nu-metal that balance aggression with clear and affecting vocal melodies. The delineation between these categories of songs isn’t quite so tidy, however. Marcloid has no problem layering the project’s signature black metal-adjacent screams into otherwise placid elds of sound, spiraling off into passages of progressive guitar / bass / keyboard / percussion interplay on a dime, or injecting bursts of textural noise into what may seem like a conventional song structure. The Fire-Toolz toolbox contains innite strategies to achieve both compositional disgurement and narrative cohesion, which extend beyond musical forms to include the nuance and thematic depth present in the project’s lyrics. Shards of death metal, jazz fusion, musique concrète, new age, ambient, dance music, and experimental electronic abstraction pop into view at any moment to steer any given track into new territories. Marcloid further eshes out Eternal Home with ashes of sound from guest performers, including swirling jazz sax and clarinet by Ian Smith, wisps of ute by 空YAMAHA, synth-noise textures by Bastian Void, and eld-recorded barks from various friends’ dogs — adding layers of community input into already densely packed tableaus. Listening through Eternal Home can feel like oating through an endless ocean of data, nding some wreckage to hold onto in the surf for a moment in the form of a gorgeous melody, a lyrical turn of phrase with profound philosophical implications, or a tightly sculpted prog breakdown, before being swept off by the next round of scattering waves. The 3-to-4 minute songs with more legible hooks and verse-chorus-verse structures serve as island oases for listeners to catch their breath, before Marcloid ips the script with another unforeseen diversion. Despite Fire-Toolz’s penchant for heady genre-mangling, advanced production techniques, and potentially overblown levels of instrumental virtuosity, Eternal Home coheres into a cathartic journey that transcends any intellectual hang-ups to crest into deeply emotional, ineffable zones. In discussing the themes and inspirations behind Eternal Home, Marcloid draws from a deep well of religious and philosophical touchstones without being tethered to any specic belief system. Overarching ideas of non- (or multi-) denominational spiritual fulllment and disarray, the clash between the debilitating forces of oppression and trauma vs. the healing powers of beauty and personal safety, and the inuence of both the mystical and physical dimensions all factor into the the lyrical text and the musical approach of the project. Angel Marcloid’s statement about Eternal Home is as follows: “Our Eternal Home is Heaven. Heaven is the ultimate reality of our shared Being, but the conscious experience of it is a state of mind (a dimension we are meant for). Whenever we are not in Heaven, it is because we’ve forgotten we are in Heaven. Heaven transcends and does not depend upon circumstances, labels, experiences, or sensations. It has nothing to do with the afterlife or religious theology. In all of the grief, fear, and stinging emotional pain I have endured in this incarnation, despite the richness and miraculous unfolding that is my beautiful life, it turns out: I am always Home, and Home is always safe. The album is what settled in the sink after I wrung myself dry. It is full of sensory memories, love of nature, spiritual deliberation, and relating childhood experiences to my present-day psychology, but it is also a metamorphosis. It engulfs the vast darkness in more light than it can handle.”

His last album, Material, was awarded BBC 6Music Album of the Day achieving as many as four ‘A-list’ singles. He won a Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award, and attended Africa Express with Damon Alburn and Brian Eno. Collaborator to Petite Noir, Okmalumkoolkat and Denai Moore, he caught attention from show-stopping mixes for Sky Ferreira, Chvrches and The 1975. But it is on his own records that we get a sense of Bacher’s scope. CID RIM grew up the keystone of the vital club scene of Vienna alongside close friends Dorian Concept and The Clonious. For ‘Songs of Vienna’ he relocated to London and crafted a new formula which reconciles kraut, psychedelia and jazz into detailed electronic pop. Behind his impressionistic vocals lie themes exploring Vienna’s privileged place in the world: a safe haven for the European project rich with imperial history & culture. It was only here in the early 21st century that Clemens and his friends could forge this hyper-specific club scene which still refuses category. While the Earth heats up beneath our feet many find comfort in art that’s safe and retro. But on this postmodern masterpiece, CID RIM is daring to take a leap forward. LUCKYME® are proud to present... Songs of Vienna.

Parquet Courts’ thought-provoking rock is dancing to a new tune. Sympathy For Life finds the Brooklyn band at both their most instinctive and electronic, spinning their bewitching, psychedelic storytelling into fresh territory, yet maintaining their unique identity. Built largely from improvised jams, inspired by New York clubs, Primal Scream and Pink Floyd and produced in league with Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, Hot Chip, David Byrne), Sympathy For Life was always destined to be dancey. Unlike its globally adored predecessor, 2018’s Wide Awake! the focus fell on grooves rather than rhythm. “Wide Awake! was a record you could put on at a party,” says co-frontman Austin Brown. “Sympathy For Life is influenced by the party itself. Historically, some amazing rock records have been made from mingling in dance music culture – from Talking Heads to Screamadelica. Our goal was to bring that into our own music.” CD: RT-0199-CD LP: RT-0199-LP LP: RT-0199-LPX File Under: Alternative File Under: Alternative File Under: Alternative limited deluxe edition

HELADO NEGRO

Far In When Roberto Carlos Lange, the musician known as Helado Negro, began writing Far In immediately following the release of his acclaimed 2019 This is How You Smile, he could not have predicted that we would soon need to learn how to stay at home and be the stars of our domestic dance floors with intimates and online communities. The titular pair in “Gemini and Leo” stay indoors to discover each other anew with music recalling Lange’s youth growing up in South Florida listening to 80s club songs, and their return sampled in 90s hip hop. Visions past and future meet in a euphoria of uptempo drums, Jen Wasner’s (Flock of Dimes) funky bass line, and Opal Hoyt’s (Zenizen) galactic swirl of warm and steely synths and bright backing vocals. What was a prophesying rehearsal for the musician, we can hope will soon be our fresh start, a choice to bring that energy home, or go out to meet it. Press

Released shortly after 9/11, Donnie Darko has become a beloved masterpiece. Michael Andrews scored the album in his studio of vintage Moogs and electric vibraphones, and when the music budget was capped, delivered a humble piano & vocal ballad covering the Tears for Fears track Mad World with his pal Gary Jules. The score album has gone on to sell over a quarter million copies and this 20th anniversary edtion is pressed on 180gram metallic silver vinyl.

OVERVIEW Clinic announce their ninth studio album Fantasy Island. With this vibrant and eclectic LP, the Grammynominated duo from Liverpool transport us to tropical climes in twelve tracks. 2019’s Wheeltappers and Shunters found the band satirizing British culture and wallowing in sleazy seventies nostalgia. This time, they are embracing the “the idea of looking at the future and the different ways it can unfold,” with their most electronic and pop record to date. Fantasy Island was recorded in an old studio on Merseyside during the summer of 2019, with good vibrations seeping into the grooves, and mixing duties handled by Claudius Mittendorfer (Parquet Courts, Neon Indian). “Clinic look to a brighter future,” reveal the band in a soundbite. Referencing H.G. Wells’ Things to Come, Marshall McLuhan’s The Medium is the Massage and Richard Brautigan's Sombrero Fallout, the themes Clinic explore on this album are time, music and entertainment. In a (coco) nutshell, Clinic have gone funky disco, broadening their sonic palette with the addition of several new gadgets including an electronic acid bass machine, a 1970s cocktail rhythm unit, a Casio digital horn, and space drum. This gear comes to the fore in the centerpiece of Fantasy Island, the incredible “Refractions (In the Rain)”, which nods to the Human League with its strident synthesizer lines, danceable beats, and the groovy, swaggering menace that Clinic always bring to the party. Elsewhere on the album, Clinic cover Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand The Rain” in a delirious manner. “It’s a tin of fruit cocktail,” says one of the band, and there is definitely a lighter, more escapist mood to Fantasy Island. As well as the Human League, other musical influences on the album include Fun Boy Three, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and early 1980s pop music. Balancing the sound and giving Fantasy Island its raw energy are Italian cosmic disco mix tapes and primitive busker elements, such as the Memphis Jug Band and old blues music. Only Clinic are capable of pulling these disparate references together to make a cohesive, thrilling whole. Praise for 2019's Wheeltappers & Shunters

“bizarre and truly unique…fizzy, krautrock-addled garage-pop” Stereogum "they haven’t lost their psychedelic edge” Uproxx “sounds like nobody other than Clinic.” Pitchfork

• LP pressed on opaque red vinyl. • Indie Exclusive LP pressing of 1,000 on black and light blue a-side/b-side vinyl. • LP includes digital download. There is a moment halfway through Hand Habits’ Fun House at which musician Meg Duffy asks the question, “How many times must I rewind the tape?” It’s a fitting question planted squarely in the middle of a sonically adventurous record concerned largely with making sense and taking stock. How much time must we spend examining our own past in order to fully understand it? How can we safely acknowledge pain in order to release it and fully actualize who we are supposed to be? Buffeted by strings, synths, and a gently-shook tambourine, the aptly-titled track, “The Answer,” highlights the emotional engine at the heart of the record. “I know the answer,” Duffy sings, “Here’s what I hope to find - it’s always mine.” Fun House is Duffy’s most ambitious Hand Habits album to date. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff ), the record was not intended as a reaction to the pandemic, but it was very much the result of taking a difficult, if much-needed, moment of pause. “When the pandemic happened, everything stopped,” recalls Duffy. “I had been touring consistently for five years, both on my own and playing in other people’s bands, so I wasn’t really writing a lot in between. It had been full pedal to the metal in terms of traveling and scheduling, which meant I really didn’t have a lot of time to think about how I felt or really check in with myself. Then, when the world basically stopped, it turned out to be the longest I’ve been alone in my entire life — without being in a relationship, without being on the road, without working myself to exhaustion — and the result was really like, holy shit. I slammed on the brakes and everything psychologically that I’d been pushing down and ignoring for the past few years suddenly flew to the foreground.” What started out as a very personal reckoning eventually blossomed into a fruitful and convenient means of making new music. Grounded in LA and sharing a house with Ashworth and Thomas, who also runs a studio space in the building, Duffy began to flesh out the songs that would eventually become Fun House. Emboldened by going into therapy and coaxed by Ashworth to push the songs into unexpected new shapes, the resulting music was more acutely personal and stylistically adventurous than anything they had attempted before. The new songs also became a prism through which Duffy could begin to self-actualize in a new way. While Fun House shares some of the same hallmarks as previous Hand Habits releases —a kind of outré queer sensibility, a gentle sense of vulnerability — the record is a marked sonic departure from the often muted tones of 2019’s Placeholder and 2017’s Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void). Instead, the tracks on Fun House sparkle, moving in unexpected directions and eschewing any specific genre. Tracks like “Aquamarine” and “More than Love” package narratives about loss, romantic longing, and childhood trauma inside polished synth pop (“Suicide / Lost a life / Well then who am I? / Why can’t you talk about it?”) while “Gold Rust” and “Concrete and Feathers” have a ragged, Neil Young quality. Friend and collaborator Mike Hadreas (of Perfume Genius) contributes vocals on “No Difference” and “Just to Hear You,” making for one of the record’s most sanguine moments, his voice providing a perfect counterpoint to Duffy. The push/pull of styles, paired with songs that move deftly between the present and past, give the record a wildly diverse, hall of mirrors quality that befits its name. Where previous Hand Habits records could be fairly insular affairs, both in their creation and their execution, Fun House feels ebullient, lush, a fully-realized conversation. LP

TITUS ANDRONICUS The Monitor

10th Anniversary vinyl reissue

In March of 2010, XL Recordings released Titus Andronicus’ epic second album THE MONITOR, immediately elevating the upstart New Jersey rock band to legendary status with their chilling and prescient vision of America’s tribalist future. A1. A More Perfect Union A2. Titus Andronicus Forever A3. No Future Part Three: Escape From No Future A4. Richard II B1. A Pot In Which To Piss B2. Four Score And Seven C1. Theme From “Cheers” C2. To Old Friends And New C3. ...And Ever D1. The Battle Of Hampton Roads

“One of the 21st century’s best rock acts” – THE ATLANTIC “On their second album, New Jersey’s Titus Andronicus split the emotional atom with anthemic chants, rousing sing-alongs, celebrations of binge drinking, marathon song titles, broken-hearted duets, punked-up irish jigs, and classic rock lyric-stealing.” 8.7, Best New Music - PITCHFORK

In late 2019, loose plans began for a 10th anniversary reissue. In early 2020, those plans were put on indefinite hold, for obvious reasons. The 10th Anniversary edition of The Monitor will finally be released on October 22nd, 2021. The record has been remastered for vinyl by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service, and now has the originally intended vinyl track transitions restored. For a limited time, this special edition will also feature the long-out-of-print embossed cover. Since The Monitor’s release 11 years ago, it’s been celebrated as a classic of this and any other era of rock music, and it’s legacy continues to grow. We’ve been through a lot and this album remains a salve for our times.

“With five songs clocking in at more than seven minutes, often thanks to detours down E Street, it’s a big-idea album that feels small and personable, even as it’s kicking you in the shin.” -SPIN

SARCASTIC SLACKER GARAGE ROCK WITH SELF-CONSCIOUSLY WINSOME LYRICS The Driving Stupid’s previously unreleased album plays like a garage group providing the soundtrack for a Z-grade horror-science fiction film. Available on LP for the first time, pressed on asparagus green vinyl! In the summer of 1966, The Driving Stupid drove. Traveling from New Jersey-by way of Albuquerque-to Hollywood. The band, with little-to-no experience, decided they were going to find fame and fortune by taking the musical world by storm! Improbably, they were able to record a handful of demos, hook up with a major label and record an entire album of outlandish music. In addition to the highly regarded single "Horror Asparagus Stories” b/w "The Reality Of (Air) Fried Borsk,” The Stupid penned songs about alien invaders, vengeful water, and tortured mailmen. Driving determination and an admitted touch of naivety led to the band's record deal. Poor singles sales and little promotion led to the album remaining unreleased for more than 35 years.

American Dreams Records WALT MCCLEMENTS A HOLE IN THE FENCE

“I hope the essence of the record conveys the beauty and wonder and hope of secret worlds,” Los Angeles composer Walt McClements says, discussing the role of subcultural societies on his new LP A Hole In The Fence. Solely created with an accordion, the album takes notes from contemporary classical, drone, and electronic music. “When I look at my life and what has inspired wonder in me,” the composer explains, “I find a thread of secret, somewhat hidden worlds that I’ve been involved with. Underground music as a teenager certainly may have been a first world I discovered that filled me with awe and place.” Pairing his glacial, meticulous music with personal experiences of artistic, traveling, and queer subcultures, McClements has created an evocative soundtrack, paralleling a lifelong journey stumbling through doorways, portals, and hidden passages to find his place in the universe. McClements’ desire for adventure on an individual level mirrors the playfulness and experimentation on A Hole In The Fence. Though he had played the accordion for years in folk and indie rock bands, as

McClements’ listening habits expanded, so did his artistic ambitions. He admits to not having a serious pedigree in ambient or drone listening, but becoming familiar in recent years with artists who create singular visions out of classical and early music instruments like Kali Malone, Sarah Davachi, Mary Lattimore, and Pauline Oliveros provided growth and newfound compositional interest with the accordion, concentrating on overtones and intervals.

Learning queer traditions and histories was equally important in McClements’ maturing, and on the sublime, ascendant piece “Climb (two times past same point in two hours),” he nods to the “No Cruising” signs still up in some Los Angeles parks. As the song builds, blooms, and explodes, it considers the joy and ecstasy of hidden worlds like cruising grounds, train yards, and queer scenes as well as the intermittent darkness they can hide. “Many people in these communities also Fittingly, as the songs mark novelty in his have relationships with hidden worlds of artistic life, McClements’ titles on A Hole In addiction,” McClements explains, “and The Fence often construe moments through I’ve lost many friends to that.” a gateway. Mae Powell fills her music with loving optimism about the way the world guides its denizens. The Bay Area singer/songwriter’s debut album, Both Ways Brighter evinces a vibrant collaborative spirit, from its playful instrumentation to lyrics about caretaking and camaraderie even in hostile environments. Openness is a guiding theme throughout the album, which offers plentiful reminders that people are best connected when they find ways to stay soft. Powell acknowledges it's not always easy. There’s plenty that stands in the way of true, honest communication, but there’s also plenty we can do to take those obstacles apart piece by piece. With Both Ways Brighter, Powell sets a keen eye on the ways people are able to find each other even when our environments tend to foster our alienation. "It's about always coming back to love and always being thankful, telling your friends you love them, even if it's scary and feels weird coming out of your mouth," says Powell. In their gentle, communal spirit, these songs offer respite, proving that we don't have to go through it all alone. “soothing & surreal pop” —Paste Magazine

WINTERHAWK

Nik Winterhawk Alexander, a Cree Indian who lead the band with his savage guitar riffs and powerful vocals, says, "Music is a very sacred part of Native American lifestyles. If a person of a tribe possesses a rattle or a drum or a stick to beat the drum, those articles are treated with great respect. Winterhawk carried that same reverence toward music, because the ability to play music is a gift" "It's important for people to realize that the band Winterhawk were not posers" Alexander emphasizes. "The majority of our songs have a very deep message in them. I believe in setting an example for young people. Young people really look up to rock and rollers" We carry high the values our forefathers did: keeping our environment clean, taking care of the creatures, including ourselves. I don't drink. The idea is to be a positive force in front of the young people, he explains. "If theres any music that is close to traditional Native American music, a war dance beat, it's straight rock and roll" "Our best received songs are Indian ones" - like their "Custer's Dying," a hard-edge, head-banging rocker with serious lyrics about guess who. •Packaged in beautiful gatefold Stoughton top-on old-style jackets •New liner notes by Alfonso Kolb and John Wagner

Mess Esque are a duo featuring music and instruments by Mick Turner and words and voice by Helen Franzmann. Their self-titled album is a beguiling travelogue of restless, somnambulant wanderings. Perhaps best known as one of the Dirty Three, Mick’s been playing guitar and making music with many collaborators for forty years. Around here, we love his paintings too —- but revere him especially for his solo music -– since 1997, we’ve released four of his albums, plus an EP and an album of the Tren Brothers (Mick with percussionist and fellow Dirty Threeite, Jim White) and two EPs featuring Mick as the Marquis de Tren with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Mick’s last record was 2013’s “Don’t Tell the Driver,” a work that found him departing from his traditional hermetic instrumental template by employing a rhythm section and brass charts and even collaborating with a vocalist. After all the purely instrumental music he’s made with Dirty Three and solo, a singer is now part of the sound he’s hearing in his head these days; while demoing new material, he realized that he was again writing music that needed lyrics –- and for that matter, someone other than himself to sing them. But who? In 2019, he was introduced to Helen through a mutual friend who’d produced her last album. Under the name Mckisko, Helen has released three albums over the past 12 years, working and touring with a range of Australian musicians along the way. Her music has been described as numinous and transformative. Her most recent album “Southerly” saw her moving into a more expansive sound which led to an openness and excitement around further collaboration. Helen lives in Brisbane; Mick in Melbourne. They started sending ideas back and forth with a plan to get together somewhere or another in 2020 and make a record. Then everything else happened instead, so they continued to collaborate from a distance, pouring meditations from their individual isolations into the greater whole. With feet rooted in the real world, their correspondence took flight, electrifying in the air between the cities. Helen took in the drift of Mick’s tracks, a brew of guitars, organs, bass and drums dizzyingly circling about. When she sang over them, it altered their meaning; upon hearing them again, Mick was inspired to make revisions, for Helen to respond to again. And so the music grew. 2021, and the album’s done, and they’ve made a band in the process, but Mick and Helen still haven’t met face-to-face yet! Listening to “Mess Esque”, you’ll never know it. Their collaboration has an intimate feel to it, a shared space. Helen’s words are carefully observed, her phrasing responding intuitively to Mick’s looping guitar figures with vocal repetitions of her own. Starting with a feeling or a voicing, there are often no words – both players are searching on their own paths. Then suddenly they have arrived and are passing the emerging meaning back and forth, the rising intensity forming a kind of undertow that pulls the listener deeper into their world. Often, Helen would record her vocals in the middle of the night, seeking that 2am flow, a moment of greatest isolation through which to trace her melodie with fragility and strength. This crystallizes Mess Esque’s intention: riding the sleepy drift through the blurred edges of the day…time-traveling to that moment beyond stasis where sense and no sense coincide and share space and time and energy. Viewing from afar the immense peace of this planet when its ghost world of spirits below -– the madness of crowds, people sliding past each other faraway in the night -– are quieted at last. Through patient cultivation of improvisations and musical certainties and a focused pursuit of something that didn’t appear to be there in the beginning, Mess Esque have willed themselves and the world around them into verdant, lustrous being.

The Lees of Memory - Unnecessary Evil (STEREO edition) Goldstar Recordings LP

CD

GSRCD006 0787269004283

Note vinyl is not due until December!! I stubbornly refused to pan anything on Unnecessary Evil... or The Blinding White Of Nothing At All. Pulled a power move and demanded mono! But Mike Purcell wanted to hear a stereo version of UE and now you can too, only from Goldstar Recordings!!!" On 2014’s Sisyphus Says, the Lees Of Memory led by ex-Superdrag frontman John Davis with able assistance from guitarist Brandon Fisher (also formerly of Superdrag) and drummer Nick Slack debuted with a heady blast of shoegazey squall. Unnecessary Evil is more streamlined and sonically varied, a closer cousin, perhaps, to the classic output of Davis’ former band, and it’s even better than its predecessor. The opening “Any Way But Down” chimes away like the Church’s “The Unguarded Moment” (one of the best songs ever, so there’s an idea of how worthy it is), and Davis, an avowed Big Star acolyte, neatly echoes that group’s melodic greatness with “XLII.” Fear not, the trio doesn’t abandon what made Sisyphus so appealing: “Just For A Moment,” co-penned by Fisher, and the closing “Look Away,” which starts quietly and climaxes epically, are infused with that record’s sweeping scope. No matter the style, Davis’ songwriting brilliance ensures Unnecessary Evil you knew this was coming is essential. Matt Hickey (Magnet Magazine). 1. Any Way But Down 2. No Power 3. XLII 4. For those only familiar with her previous releases, aya sinclair’s ‘im hole’ will be a dramatic revelation. Under the LOFT pseudonym, she attracted global acclaim for her fwd-thinking club inversions that juxtaposed the British addiction to breaks 'n bass with critical, self-sluicing logic and untethered abstraction, tearing down dance music's hallowed pillars of respectability while winking knowingly to voyeuristic onlookers. On ‘im hole’ this routine has evolved; aya has distilled the incisive sonic experimentation of her earlier releases, the tongue-incheek giggles of her DJ sets and edits, and the identity-fluxing lyricism of her live shows. Contorting language, dialect, gender and sexuality between intermittently controlled bursts of rhythm, noise and aural goop, she has sculpted a set of autobiographical vignettes that challenge established norms, question supposed truths and affirm a spectrum of interlocking experiences. But while it's wide open and personal, ‘im hole’ also challenges queer art's tendency to veer towards repetitive solipsism, the music fragmenting familiar sounds and twinning them with familiar words, assembled in unfamiliar ways. Stories are muddled with phonetics just as dubstep is macrodosed with microtonal drone. The anxious, explorative personality that made aya’s past releases so magnetic is magnified here, and her sense of humour is completely naked. It's a Gregg Araki animated biopic of Burial. It's Shakespeare with hoop earrings and a busted skateboard.

‘im hole’ will physically manifest as a hardback cloth-bound book of lyrics, poems and photographs, designed in collaboration with Oliver Van Der Lugt, with single-use download code included. 01. somewhere between the 8th and 9th floor 02. what if i should fall asleep and slipp under 03. once wen’t west 04. dis yacky 05. “Hypermagic Mountain is Lightning Bolt’s fourth, most well-oiled 1. 2 Morro Morro Land album: song-by-song it chugs into rockier Van Halen, Fucking 2. Captain Caveman 3. Birdy Champs, or Orthrelm territory.” - Pitchfork Hypermagic Mountain, Lightning Bolt’s 4th album has been unavailable for nearly a decade since it’s 2005 release. Back as a double LP including a full drawing by Brian Chippendale as the D side Etching! The package includes a large scale 4-page book (previous pressings included a cd size book). Recorded at Machines with Magnets and Lightning Bolt’s home by Dave Auchenbach. Lightning Bolt play with abandon that is unmatched and remarkably undiluted and this album is just one more example of that raw power and sound. They are often called one of the loudest rock outfits in existence, both on record and on (or famously, off) the stage. Brian Gibson creates sounds that are unexpected and remarkably varied with his virtuosic bass playing and his inventive approach to the instrument, centered around melody rather than rhythm. The dizzying fury of Brian Chippendale’s drums twist from primal patterns into disorienting break beats as his distorted, and echoing vocals weave more melody into the mayhem. “Certain loud guitar rock records serve as brain erasers, a form of shock therapy zapping through aural inputs and (to mix metaphors) cleaning the proverbial clock. Lightning Bolt is one such thing.” -LA Times ALSO AVAILABLE : Lightning Bolt 2xLP (Thrill 498) Sonic Citadel CD/2xLP (Thrill 505) Wonderful Rainbow LP (Thrill 501) Fantasy Empire CD/2xLP (Thrill 380) Ride the Skies LP (Thrill 499)

TRACKLISTING A1 Clypich A2 Convade A3 Crossing Stasis B1 Contour B2 Ciade

From Stasis is the fourth full-length album from Mike Cadoo's Dryft alias. The album finds the n5MD owner-operator shifting his focus back toward more industrialized forms of electronic music. While his previous release, The Blur Vent (2014), had a potent witchhouse fixation, From Stasis has more in common with 2010's Ventricle or even his preceding workmanship as a member of post-industrial/IDM duo Gridlock. As a result, From Stass is a back-to-basics reexamination of Cadoo's ever-morphing Dryft project. The album is a collection of off-world synths and rusty syncopated 12-bit drums, all with Cadoo's distinctive grazingly lumbering approach. Devoid of previous experimentation outside the realm of electronic music, Cadoo is known.

HIGHLIGHTS 4th Dryft album and first after a seven year hiatus. Cadoo was a member of groundbreaking Industrial/IDM duo Gridlock and also records as Bitcrush. Grey with Black marble limited to 250 copies worldwide. Comes with download card to download 24bit audio files.

April Magazine - If The Ceiling Were A Kite: Vol. 1 Tough Love LP

TLV141LP

5055869548069

The purest a band can aim for is to present their milieu as a time capsule from the morning of. April Magazine deals deep in the hypnagogic charm of their surroundings. Since the 2018 release of “Shirley Don’t” a sneaky classic that first turned ears outside their SF Bay Area home the band has stirred out a handful of cryptic indie pop recordings nestled in warm aerosol hiss and scrappy hand-drawn cover art. Music that glints in the far back of an urban daydream where guitars could be bells, bells could be voices, and voices hardly find use in words. If The Ceiling Were A Kite is a document of things losing definition and time gone slack. The songs on If The Ceiling Were A Kite were recorded over a span of about two years, after Peter, Mike and Kati started playing together around a four track cassette player in Peter’s bedroom. Other kindred spirits like Julia Waves, Ian Collins, Anthony Comstock OBC, Zach Vito, and eventually David Diaz joined in on some of the recordings and live shows adding to the collective ‘whatever works’ ethos of April Magazine.

CONG! CONG JOSIE

STREET DATE OCTOBER 22ND 2021 The debut album Cong! from Australia’s Cong Josie traverses a hyperreal world of romance and contorted machismo. It is an electric place of sleaze, smoke and gyrating hips. Below the throbbing synth rhythms, early rock'n'roll kicks simmer. Cong Josie is the new project and alter ego of Nic Oogjes of Heat Beat ensemble NO ZU. The sound, soul and voice of Cong manifests from deep within Nicolaas’ psyche. Noir narratives are in constant friction with his personal confessions. It's a wild ride that is always mutating, merging influences like a half remembered fever dream. Rockabilly leaning vocals muscle into EBM club settings, which in turn are washed rose-tinted by crooning balladry. All of this is perfect prey for post-punk rave-ups that lead ultimately to swamp-synth stomping and end of world revelry and back again. Somehow though, no matter where Cong! struts, its vision remains singular, its world remains its own and a feeling of ease pervades the lot. There is no doubt that Cong's wink-and-a-grin humour provides the perfect refreshment to swallow this one big x-rated pill. It invites the listener in and welcomes them to be a part of it all. Meanwhile, it is his distinctive Aussie twang and the bricolage of historical influences on show that firmly place the LP in the here (Australia), the now (2021) and maybe even... a hyperreal parallel universe.

July 17 will see the much-treasured analog synthesizer suite Chronology by PakistaniAmerican composer and drummer of the cult trio Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi, finally receiving a worldwide vinyl release on Record Store Day UK 2021. Originally conceived only digitally in 2016, Chronology was Qasim’s first release of electronic music. Having been in the world of improvised and classical music up to this point, it seemed only fitting for Naqvi’s inaugural electronic music album to be made exclusively on a malfunctioning synthesizer — an old Moog Model D. Leaving the abundant options of a computer behind. “Taken individually, the six pieces on Chronology dispense small-scale hits of gorgeousness. In tandem, the tracks cohere to form a compelling suite of pieces that can subtly undermine expectations for ambientinfluenced composition.” — Pitchfork According to Naqvi: "On the level of functionality, the synthesizer was kind of janky. It produced a low level din of white electrical noise and some of the knobs were erratic. Sometimes it would just shut off and the idea would end there. It was like bringing some ancient thing back from the dead and having it adapt. But with sound that always leads to interesting results." He used these anomalies to his advantage and the overall piece has a unique sonic signature that would perhaps be impossible to recreate on another Model D. “When we think of a computer, we think of limitless options and an abundance of memory for recalling ideas. The Moog holds a reverse approach. It's a tactile piece of machinery with discrete circuits, 3 voltage-controlled oscillators and knobs for controlling the contour of the oscillator. It's monophonic, so chords or polyphonic playing is out of the question. The absence of this function required a layering of ideas in stages. Also, there's no way of saving anything or recalling presets. Once you make a sound, that's it. It exists in that moment unless you chronicle the settings by writing them down. It's kind of like making a gesture with a brush. Once it strikes the canvas, you can either freeze it in time or erase it forever”, Qasim recalls.
