Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Trevor Peterson at Fire Talk Records How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When the label first started I was playing in bands, signing artists I met on tours and really looking at it as a community building project. It’s still very much that, we’re trying to build a community of like minded artists and releases that share a common spirit. I’ve always wanted the label to be as big as possible so the music can reach the widest audience possible, the difference now is that we’ve built the relationships and have the knowledge to do that.

How did you personally get started in the music industry? I started as a musician, playing in bands, touring and releasing records on other record labels. When and where did the label begin? Fire Talk started in the mid to late aughts (we count 2009 as the founding year although in ‘07 & ‘08 the idea was brewing) in Denver Colorado where I was living and going to school at the time and by 2011 moved with me to New York City where the label was fully incubated.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? There are definitely no favorites! I think the one that sticks out most in my mind is the first Tennis 7 inch we did in 2010, that was the first time we really moved a bunch of records and saw something have a real moment and it was exciting to be a part of that. It was pre streaming and we weren’t releasing anything digitally at all at the time so the response had a completely different feel, something that couldn’t be replicated now for us. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Nothing too extreme, we just had Dehd play some shows from the back of a box truck in Chicago and a few random locations to promote an album they weren’t able to tour which was a fun promo op!

What is the meaning behind the name for the label? The label’s name in classic fashion is something I wish a little more thought went into, or maybe not I don’t know! But the short of it is while living in Denver there was a particular bar that musicians, filmmakers, poets, degenerates and general bohemian types would hang out at that happened to have a fire pit in the back, and a lot of ideas came out of conversations around that place. And so when trying to think of a label name the phrase “Fire Talk” came out of one of those conversations and it stuck.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I’m pro color, give the people what they want, you know! Feel like we’ve seen everything done at this point; my favorite thing we’ve done recently is a deluxe repackage of a 2020 release that we blew out the packaging, added a bunch of bonus material. 2xLP, raised spot gloss gatefold jacket full printed inner sleeves so basically 8 places for artwork and then a really fun galaxy swirl color vinyl. I think for non Fire Talk, the most inspiring packaging for me and the first time I saw anything like it was the first GOAT record “World Music” with the crazy die cut jacket.

How has the label changed since it started? The biggest change is that the scale at which we’re able to reach folks has elevated exponentially. From selling 7 inches on consignment locally and on merch tables to multiple territory worldwide campaigns. Of course the landscape has shifted as well which has driven a lot of growth and change for the label.

Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Is it ever increasing?! We’ve always made these two formats so I guess we’ll just keep on making them. No plans to do anything too crazy in the near term, let’s see what those year on year numbers say at the end of 2021 & we can re-evaluate!

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We’re a growing small team, myself a project manager and A&R and a marketing person. Outside of our team we then hire out for other services depending on a campaign’s needs whether it be radio, PR or digital marketing.

How would you describe the average fan of the label? I have no idea! “Likes good music” lol.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? I think the challenges shift on a monthly basis! Early on it was figuring out the best way to navigate cancelling tons of stuff; we had quite a few artists on the road in March 2020 that all of course had to make fast decisions in that period. After that it was how to maintain our DTC business while offices were closed and our city ground to a halt and now it’s navigating the ongoing production issues. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? We try to think globally so the answer is no in terms of the artists we work with and the music we release but we do try to keep the spirit of New York City and the Indie community here in what we do. If anything our city constantly inspires us: there’s an immense amount of creative energy here that I think we have no choice but to tap into. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? So many places! The internet of course is ground zero a lot of the time but as shows are coming back we’re looking forward to that aspect of discovery again. Show up for the opener always! An artist I’d like to rave about who has yet to play their first show and is a pandemic signing for us is Mandy, Indiana based in Manchester UK. Pummeling electronic post-punk and I have no doubt the live show will be massive. Top of the list! Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? It’s definitely a mix, I love to describe it as the best new music sections from your favorite local indie store. That said, we like to work with outsiders, free spirits, artists that might make indie rock, post punk, noise, whatever it is but do it in their own way.

In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? I think this is of utmost importance and should be discussed at the highest levels in our industry. While labels can make certain decisions to improve sustainability in our own small businesses I think the industry as a whole needs to come together on this sooner rather than later to drive any real impactful lasting change. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Both are very important to me both personally and as the founder of this label. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Streaming and the sheer volume of music released. It’s easier than ever to make and distribute music and it’s harder than ever to reach listeners. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? We just did this! It’s called Open Tab and it’s not genre specific but does lean into new music, and part of the imprint is discovery where each release is paired with an interview and mix curated by the artist. We felt like creating more context around a release, and in the era of no liner notes it could be a valuable use of our resources for emerging artists. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: I have to shout out my local, which is Rough Trade here in NYC at which friends old and new work or have worked at over the years, and they’ve been big supporters of the label. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? “Fire who?”

LP FIRELP289R

809236128942

Limited edition, red vinyl edition repress. 500 only. Single sleeve, download card included. Ahead of its time, ‘And Don’t The Kids Just Love It’ was Television Personalities’ influential debut album released in 1981 and features ‘I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives’. The legendary lo-fi release sees them produce British inspired 60s pop and post-punk that captured the period and ‘sounds remarkably prescient’ (Pitchfork’s Best 100 albums of the 1980s). With the formidable Daniel Treacy at its core, Television Personalities remain one of new wave’s longest serving and seminal artists with a career spanning over three decades. The indie visionaries directly influenced virtually every major pop uprising of the period including artists as diverse as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pavement and Creation’s Alan McGee. “They provided the inspiration and motivation for me to start the label.” Alan McGee, Creation Records. // “A remarkably influential album that holds up extremely well.” Allmusic. July 17 will see the much-treasured analog synthesizer suite Chronology by PakistaniAmerican composer and drummer of the cult trio Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi, finally receiving a worldwide vinyl release on Record Store Day UK 2021. Originally conceived only digitally in 2016, Chronology was Qasim’s first release of electronic music. Having been in the world of improvised and classical music up to this point, it seemed only fitting for Naqvi’s inaugural electronic music album to be made exclusively on a malfunctioning synthesizer — an old Moog Model D. Leaving the abundant options of a computer behind. “Taken individually, the six pieces on Chronology dispense small-scale hits of gorgeousness. In tandem, the tracks cohere to form a compelling suite of pieces that can subtly undermine expectations for ambientinfluenced composition.” — Pitchfork According to Naqvi: "On the level of functionality, the synthesizer was kind of janky. It produced a low level din of white electrical noise and some of the knobs were erratic. Sometimes it would just shut off and the idea would end there. It was like bringing some ancient thing back from the dead and having it adapt. But with sound that always leads to interesting results." He used these anomalies to his advantage and the overall piece has a unique sonic signature that would perhaps be impossible to recreate on another Model D. “When we think of a computer, we think of limitless options and an abundance of memory for recalling ideas. The Moog holds a reverse approach. It's a tactile piece of machinery with discrete circuits, 3 voltage-controlled oscillators and knobs for controlling the contour of the oscillator. It's monophonic, so chords or polyphonic playing is out of the question. The absence of this function required a layering of ideas in stages. Also, there's no way of saving anything or recalling presets. Once you make a sound, that's it. It exists in that moment unless you chronicle the settings by writing them down. It's kind of like making a gesture with a brush. Once it strikes the canvas, you can either freeze it in time or erase it forever”, Qasim recalls.

OVERVIEW

Domino presents Colourgrade, the much anticipated new album from Tirzah.

CATALOG NUMBER: WIG476 RELEASE DATE: October 1, 2021 FILE UNDER: Alternative “T” CD Boxlot: 50 UPC: 887828047628

Colourgrade follows on from 2018’s immediate cult classic LP, Devotion. It forms a subconscious snapshot from across a year when Tirzah was playing live regularly for the first time, in the depths of promoting Devotion and recorded soon after the birth of her first child and shortly before her second child was born. The album explores recovery, gratitude and new beginnings, presenting a singer having discovered the type of love that is shared between a mother and a child for the first time, whilst simultaneously working as an artist. Capturing both the great and the scary, the exhaustion and the recovery, Colourgrade is a listless amble through the innermost feelings, an intoxicating presentation of a full time mother and artist. As always, a Tirzah record is a family affair. That doesn’t just mean grandmum and granddad, but the extended CURL crew that includes long term collaborators, Mica Levi and Coby Sey. It’s this natural, collaborative energy that keeps Tirzah’s music fresh and progressive. Praise for 2018's Devotion

Black Dice Sales Points: •25th anniversary as a band •Their first new album in almost 10 years •North American Tour Oct-Nov 2021 •Debut LP on FourFour Records, a new label from DFA Records Co-Founder Jonathan Galkin Genre: Electronic, Experimental, Indie RIYL: Animal Collective, Birthday Party, Boredoms, Oneohtrix Point Never, Giant Swan Bio: Mod Prog Sic is the new album from Black Dice, their first LP in almost a decade. The album is the band at their peak, combining twisted rhythms and sharp, beamed-in guitar melodies and vocals . The album packs twists and turns all along the way, morphing and changing shape, creating a truly alien form of classic rock and some of the most timeless and unique leftfield electronic music being made today. This is Black Dice's 25th year as a band and they sound as unto themselves as they did in 1997, even while sounding nothing like the screamo punk of their Providence day. For all 25 years of their existence, Black Dice have loomed as an unrivaled, unforgettable, and influential force. Their performances are forceful, full-body experiences, with listeners afterward describing the singular kink of feeling their skeletons vibrate. This understanding of the physical force of sound has endeared Black Dice to both the damaged youth of DIY warehouse shows and the erudite spectators of vaulted galleries.

UPC: 848064012887 FORMAT: Compact Disc PACKAGING: Jewel Case BOX LOT: 30

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, including Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension), Chicago’s AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), Brooklyn’s CBA (Collective Black Artists), and Detroit’s The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory, with a mission statement “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out 20 albums during its short, 4-year (1971-1975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact… but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. After years of trying, we at Real Gone Music finally were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020…right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson, each vinyl reissue features the original black-and-white Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power that draw a straight line between what was happening then…and what is happening right now. Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative with the release of each Black Jazz album.

WALTER BISHOP, JR.’S 4TH CYCLE: KEEPER OF MY SOUL (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) LP Side One STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 Keyboardist Walter Bishop, Jr. recorded the second album released by the Black Jazz label, Coral Keys, a masterpiece of Blue Note-style atmospherics infused with ‘70s soul-jazz. But a mere two years later, Bishop, Jr. brought a whole new sound and a whole new band into the studio for 1973’s Keeper of My Soul. Contrary to the album title, the name of the band was not The 4th Cycle; instead, as the liner notes put it, the name reflected “Bishop’s composition and improvisational techniques based on the Cycle of 4ths and his various personal musical cycles as performer, student and teacher.” The album also was imbued with a spirituality owed in part to his studies with yogi Parmahansa Yogananda; little wonder, then, that Keeper of My Soul was a more ambitious, electric, and “out” record than its predecessor. With the estimable support of flautist/sax man Ronnie Laws, bassist Gerald Brown, and vibraphonist Woody Murray, Bishop explores Keith Jarrett-like free-form passages (“Those Who Chant”), Latin stylings (Kenny Dorham’s “Blue Bossa”), and offers one of the most unusual and funky interpretations of “Summertime” you’ll ever hear. RUDOLPH JOHNSON: THE SECOND COMING (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 The album title is apt, as this was saxman Rudolph Johnson’s second album for the Black Jazz label (and this reissue marks only the second time this 1973 album has been released on vinyl)! But more importantly, the quality of the music it contains renders the more common, Messianic meaning of the phrase “the second coming” equally applicable. Saxman and bandleader Rudolph Johnson never attained the commercial success of some of his contemporaries, but his fans consider him the rightful heir to John Coltrane’s improvisational genius. And with keyboardist Kirk Lightsey in the band for this go-round (we already reissued Johnson’s very fine 1971 Black Jazz album Spring Rain), sparks are gonna fly, starting right off with the cookin’ album opener “The Traveler,” which if you close your eyes will definitely bring to mind Coltrane’s classic quartet circa the early ‘60s. Indeed, unlike most of the other releases on the Black Jazz label, The Second Coming barely nods to the fusion and soul jazz trends that were sweeping jazz at the time. Instead, this is expressive, free improvisation at its best, beautifully recorded by producer Gene Russell and deserving of a much wider audience than it found the first time. Newly remastered and annotated, and, like we said, reissued on vinyl for the first time (also available in a orange with black streaks vinyl edition limited to 750 copies and exclusive to independent record stores)!

LITTLE WILLIE JOHN: THE COMPLETE R&B HIT SINGLES (YELLOW “FEVER” VINYL EDITION) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 Diminutive in size but gigantic in stature, Little Willie John was a genuine architect of soul. Along with Clyde McPhatter, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke, the visionary singer stood at the forefront of fusing gospel intensity to rhythm and blues tradition. And had he not died inside a Walla Walla prison at the age of 30, his name would likely be etched in the same soul Pantheon as his peers. Despite his abbreviated career, Willie cut a string of seminal sides for Cincinnati-based King Records from 1955 to 1961 that rank among the finest R&B waxed by any singer for any label of the period. It didn’t matter whether the song was an after-hours blues ballad or an uptempo footstomper: Willie’s agile, melismatic voice made the number soar. As Motown legend Lamont Dozier says in Bill Dahl’s notes to this collection, “Willie John was just an extraordinary talent. He knew how to touch you with a song, and he knew how to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.” Now, from Real Gone Music comes the definitive vinyl anthology for this overlooked soul superstar: 17 tracks that include every R&B chart hit! That means such landmark tunes as “Fever,” “All Around the World,” “Need Your Love So Bad,” “Home at Last,” and “Leave My Kitten Alone,” all documented by liner note writer Bill Dahl on the accompanying insert. An essential addition to any soul library!

HERBIE MANN:

LIVE AT THE WHISKY 1969—THE UNRELEASED MASTERS (2-CD SET)

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 While jazz flautist Herbie Mann is often remembered as a pop-jazz player, in the late ‘60s he was fronting one of the most progressive and electrifying bands in the world: guitarist Sonny Sharrock, Miroslav Vitous on electric & upright bass, saxophonist Steve Marcus, drummer Bruno Carr, and vibraphonist Roy Ayers (the same band shown in the new Summer of Soul documentary). Together, the sextet cut the dynamic Live at the Whisky A Go Go album in 1969, drawn from a four night run at the legendary nightclub on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip. Though the band’s repertoire was quite varied on these dates, just two side-long tracks, “Ooh Baby” and “Philly Dog,” surfaced on the Atlantic Records release. Now, reissue producer Pat Thomas has unearthed the multi-track tapes for these shows (never before mixed), and has programmed a double-CD set that shows this high-energy jazz-rock outfit stretching out – sometimes, on Sharrock’s solos, way out – with, as an added bonus, the appearance of Linda Sharrock on songs that appeared (in studio versions) on the seminal Sonny Sharrock album Black Woman released around the time of these live shows. All performances are previously unreleased, including a 23-minute jam of Donovan’s “Tangier” blending into Tim Hardin’s “If I Were A Carpenter” and a newly discovered take of “Ooh Baby” that clocks in at 21 minutes! Sonny Sharrock’s searing lead guitar work is featured on songs first recorded by Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, and Simon & Garfunkel – plus “Black Woman” and Portrait of Linda in Three Colors” with Linda on vocals. Live at the Whisky—The Unreleased Masters puts fans of Bitches Brew, The Inner Mounting Flame, early Weather Report, and similar-era titles on notice that Herbie Mann was not just a pop-jazzbo – but a force to taken more seriously than history has accorded him. Packaging includes several previously unpublished live photos of this band in action, with notes by Thomas. A huge jazz find!

ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK (Clear with Green & Purple Swirl Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021

Wanna hear the soundtrack to Armageddon? This 1995 film starred William Sadler as the Demon Knight, who, along with his new recruit, Jada Pinkett Smith, is charged with fending off The Collector (Billy Zane) and his army of demons from acquiring an ancient relic that is the only thing preventing the complete destruction of the human race. While the flick did meh box office and was panned critically, the soundtrack was easily one of the best of its era and of its kind, an all-star line-up of thrash and heavy metal acts mostly doing otherwise unavailable material (only the track by Pantera appears to have been released prior to the movie). The Pantera, Megadeth, Melvins, and Biohazard entries are particulary good, and the one hip hop tune on the collection, Gravediggaz’ “1-800-Murder,” is an archetypal “horrorcore” rap song. But perhaps the best tune is “Hey Man Nice Shot” by Filter, an outfit that hadn’t released anything prior to this soundtrack. Since this movie came out in 1995, it only came out on LP in Europe at the time; our Real Gone reissue brings it back on clear with green and purple swirl vinyl!

ZACHERLE’S MONSTER GALLERY (LIMITED CLEAR WITH GREEN SWIRL VINYL EDITION) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 Fittingly enough, The Cool Ghoul himself, John Zacherle, passed away right around Halloween in 2016, and now we here at Real Gone Music are celebrating his “deathday” by releasing his incredibly rare album Zacherle’s Monster Gallery, originally issued on the budget Elektra imprint Crestview, on clear with green swirl vinyl limited to 500 copies! This record was originally released in 1963, and was actually a copy of the 1960 Elektra album Spook Along with Zacherley, except for one very important detail: the cover art to the Crestview release was inked by legendary Mad Magazine artist Jack Davis, who actually passed away in 2016 as well. Which probably explains why original copies of this record are selling for about $150 if you can find them…So consider this release a twin tribute to two guys who brought a big smile to millions of kids, especially those on the East Coast that used to see Zach present all those cheesy horror movies on TV. Dick’s Picks Vol. 19—10/19/73 Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena, Oklahoma City, OK (3-CD Set) STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 The first full 1973 concert to be released, and the first concert of their uniformly excellent Fall ’73 Midwest tour, Dick’s Picks Vol. 19 captures the Dead a matter of days after the release of Wake of the Flood, the first release on their own Grateful Dead Records label, and over half the tracks from the album appear here, highlighted by stellar (no pun intended) renditions of “Stella Blue” and “Eyes of the World.” Both of those songs appear as the first encore on Disc Three, which may well be one of the finest single discs in the entire Dick’s Picks canon; the disc leads off with a 15-minute “Dark Star” which segues effortlessly to “Mind Left Body Jam” leading into a truly transcendent reading of “Morning Dew.” Add “Sugar Magnolia” and a show-ending “Johnny B. Goode” to the set and you know everybody went home happy. A superb sound mix on this one, too, and as always it’s presented in HDCD sound. Out of print for years!

TONY JOE WHITE: THE COMPLETE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021

The late, great, Louisiana-born Tony Joe White first gained fame mainly through his songwriting; 1969’s “Polk Salad Annie” was his only Top Ten hit, but artists such as Dusty Springfield (“Willie and Laura Mae Jones”), Brook Benton (“Rainy Night in Georgia”) and Elvis Presley (“For Ol’ Times Sake”; “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby”) took his songs to the charts. But White was always been a singular performer in his own right; the honeyed burr of his baritone, his alternately tough and tender vocal delivery and liberal use of his “whomper stomper” wah-wah pedal lend him a completely distinctive sound. Simply put, nobody, but nobody, sounds like Tony Joe White, and on this 2-CD collection, we’ve rounded up all three of the classic albums he recorded for Warner Bros. in the early ‘70s—all of which are out of print and costing a mint online—plus non-LP singles to create The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings. Recorded in Memphis (partly at Ardent Studios of Big Star fame), 1971’s Tony Joe White paired him with producer Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt) and shifted the focus slightly from the fuzz-drenched swamp rock of White’s Monument recordings to a more introspective style, though “They Caught the Devil and Put Him in Jail in Eudora, Arkansas” and “My Kind of Woman” could blow the doors off any roadhouse south of the Mason-Dixon line. White’s next album, 1972’s The Train I’m On, continued this gentler, more vulnerable style to great effect; produced by the legendary team of Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd, with the mighty Muscle Shoals sessioneers in support, Train’s set of songs tackled complex themes of dislocation, alienation and loss with a blend of blues, soul and folk highlighted by some beautiful acoustic guitar work by White and Tippy Armstrong. It’s a masterpiece. And 1973’s Homemade Ice Cream might be even better; White’s original version of “For Ol’ Times Sake” is just devastating, and “I Want Love (‘Tween You and Me),” “Taking the Midnight Train” and the title track are every bit as good. Co-producer Tom Dowd and a crack band of guitarist Reggie Young, bassist Norbert Putnam, drummer Kenny Malone and keyboardist David Briggs catch every nuance of these deceptively simple songs. Real Gone’s presentation of this essential material features liner notes by Ben Edmonds with quotes from Tony Joe White himself. Not to be missed. TRACKS CD One Tony Joe White

THE SWEET INSPIRATIONS: THE ATLANTIC YEARS (2-CD SET)

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 Initially created from the ranks of a group of ‘60s female background session singers that at one time included Dionne Warwick, her sister Dee Dee, adopted sister Judy Clay and “Just One Look” singer Doris Troy, The Sweet Inspirations became an official Atlantic recording artist after being the label’s go-to studio backup vocal group for many of the label’s primary artists including Aretha Franklin (with whom they toured in 1967 and 1968), Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, The Drifters, and Esther Phillips among others. Consisting of Emily “Cissy” Houston (who took Dee Dee Warwick’s place when she launched her own solo career in 1965), Sylvia Shemwell (sister of Judy Clay), and gospel singers Estelle Brown and Myrna Smith (who knew Dionne and Dee Dee during their teen years at New Hope Baptist Church), The Sweet Inspirations enjoyed their first hit single in 1967 with their interpretation of The Staples Singers’ “Why (Am I Treated So Bad).” The song was written for them by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, who played on a number of the group’s Memphis sessions. In 1969, the group was hired by Elvis Presley as his vocal backup group and spent a number of years on the road with him. Cissy Houston left the group in 1970 to pursue a solo career; Estelle, Sylvia, and Myrna continued recording as a trio with Stax Records and RSO Records. The Atlantic Years presents 37 tracks, including the A and B sides of the group’s 18 singles (with the 1970 hit, “Gotta Find Me A Brand New Lover,” originally released as Pt. 1 & 2, combined into one track), one cut unearthed from the Atlantic vaults in 2004 and previously only available on an out-of-print US compilation, and three previously unreleased sides (including a six-minute-plus medley of “Little Green Apples,” Aretha Franklin’s “Think,” and The Beatles’ “Something”). The 2-CD set includes photos and notes by SoulMusic Records’ David Nathan, with remastering by Mike Milchner of SonicVision. Quite possibly the greatest backup vocal group of them all, finally in the spotlight!

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2021 Pop music has seen its share of supergroups, but none of them were (and are) as infectious, buoyant and plain ol’ fun as the Texas Tornados. And make no mistake—the Tornados were a supergroup; in fact, when it comes to roots and ethnic music, the pedigree of the band was unmatched. Accordionist Flaco Jiménez is The King of Conjunto Music, and has played with everybody from the Rolling Stones to Buck Owens, while keyboardist Augie Meyers basically is the Vox organ, having played it with the Sir Douglas Quintet and on countless other releases by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, John Hammond…the list goes on. Freddy Fender was the rare Chicano artist to achieve crossover pop success with a style that blended swamp pop, rockabilly, country, and Tejano influences together with a beautiful, crooning vocal style, and Doug Sahm—well, Doug Sahm was Doug Sahm, an American original if there ever was one, a one-man melting pot of country, soul, Tejano and rock and roll. Together, these four legends cut four albums (or five, if you count the Spanish-language version of their debut) for the Reprise label during the ‘90s that were among the greatest roots-rock records ever made, a rollicking, utterly irresistible body of music made for dancing, drinking, laughing, loving and living. Now, Real Gone Music goes deep into the vaults to present the ultimate Texas Tornados collection, a 2-CD, 39-track set that includes prime cuts from all of their albums—the Spanish and English versions of their self-titled debut, plus Zone of Our Own, Hangin’ On by a Thread and 4 Aces—together with rarities and six otherwise unavailable sides including four instrumentals and a Miller Lite beer spot! Among the non-album tracks are such Tornados touchstones as “Una Mas Cerveza” and the Fender favorite “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights,” while the album sides are highlighted by “(Hey Baby) Que Paso,” “Little Bit Is Better Than Nada,” “Who Were You Thinking Of,” the Doug Sahm anthem “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” and many more. Friend of the band Randy Poe has penned the notes based on a fresh interview with Doug Sahm’s son Shawn, latter-day leader of the Tornados and authority on all things to do with his dad, while the photos come from the dim recesses of the Reprise label archives. Remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision and assembled with love by compiler Mike Johnson, A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada—Prime Cuts 1990-1996 is a longoverdue look at a band that never stopped going strong. GENRE : Metal / Alternative FILE UNDER :”B” BUMMER RELEASE DATE : Sept. Oct. 24, 01,2021 2021 NO EXPORT (JAPAN, S. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING:

Kansas City trio BUMMER mirror the absurdity of modern life with a balance of dark humor, dejected nihilism and righteous fury. Their music spills out in torrents of skull-crushing riffs, gargantuan bass and caustic howls delivered at breakneck speed with gleeful abandon. Following their split 7” with longtime friends The Body which teased a more focused, lean sound for the group, Dead Horse hones BUMMER’s auditory desolation and scathing gaze to laser-point precision. In eleven short vignettes the quartet lay waste to everything in their path, penning a vitriolic overview of life in the American Midwest, a surprising blend of one-star Trip Advisor review and insightful cultural critique. BUMMER’s searing music and self-deprecating sense of humor are steeped in their surroundings. Vocalist/guitarist Matt Perrin elaborates: “;OLZL ZVUNZ HYL PUÅ\LUJLK I` OV^ LTW[` HUK TPUPZJ\SL SPML PU 2HUZHZ JHU IL HUK [OL Z[VYPLZ [OH[ JVTL MYVT P[ ¹ From the opioid epidemic to the dust bowl and extraterrestrial encounters, themes recur of entrapment and failed escapes. Written during lockdown in the quartet’s practice space and recorded with Justin Mantooth at Westend Recording Studio, +LHK /VYZL was written as a more collective endeavour than the band’s previous outings. It captures the sheer ecstasy and blunt force of the group’s live shows in greater clarity than ever before. +LHK /VYZL is a decisive statement from a band at the height of their powers, a masterclass in eviscerating hooks and incisive takedowns. >P[O [OLPY ;OYPSS 1VJRL` KLI\[ HSI\T )<44,9»Z \UÅPUJOPUN YLTPUKLY of just how gruelling life can be is coupled with a cathartic riff driven explosion of energy. Dead Horse was produced & engineered by Justin Mantooth ( Radkey, Hyborian, and Godmaker.) “BUMMER, [is] arguably one of the best damn noise rock bands in existence right now,” - Metal Injection “[BUMMER] puts the “power” in power trio as they play a raw and primal form of aggressive music that splits the difference between Bleach-era Nirvana and the early, primitive thrash of Slayer. It’s aggressive and in-yourface, but doesn’t skimp on melody, making their songs memorable. So, there is power and a bit of precision to what they do. A whole lot of volume, too.” - New Noise Magazine

Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Body Meat – aka Christopher Taylor – has repressed his new EP Year of the Orc, which is a celebration of himself and other outsiders breaking the mould. “The EP title is about having acceptance in myself” Taylor explains. “I’m an orc, I’ve never been very popular, Side B I don’t have a specific aesthetic or genre or anything. I’m cool with 1) ULTIMA laying low and creating and I surround myself with people who 2) Stand By believe the same thing. It’s me and my orcs taking over!” 3) Ghost (Feat. Laraaji) Written and recorded in his apartment in Philadelphia, Year of the Orc will, for many, be an introduction to an artist who stretches, D E TA I L S re-configures and defies genre in a way that plays with atypical Cat#- SI-PTKF-1318 rhythmic structure with a breathless fluidity. Taylor cites everything UPC- 720841131816 from “getting back into Boyz II Men” to the dense, glottal production of Jlin as touchstones while writing, and that deft balance of thick percussive undergrowth with hyperpop smarts is immediately apparent. 281 North 7th Street Brooklyn NY 11211 Partisanrecords.com

DUCKS LTD. MODERN FICTION

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. (formerly Ducks Unlimited), the bright jangle-pop duo of Tom McGreevy (lead vocal, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Evan Lewis (guitar, bass, drum programming), accomplish the impossible. The pair craft songs that play to very specific inspirations without drowning underneath them—immediately evidenced on their critically acclaimed EP, Get Bleak, and sharpened on Modern Fiction, their debut LP. “The Servants, The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Television Personalities, Felt,” Evan rattles off. “Look Blue Go Purple is one I reference a lot with our production.” Echoes of ‘80s indiepop abound, but they never overwhelm. This is not a nostalgic record, after all, nor is it a derivative one. Instead, across 10 cheery-sounding songs, Ducks Ltd. explore contemporary society in decline, examining large scale human disaster through personal turmoil (hence the title, taken from a university course called Gnosticism and Nihilism in Modern Fiction, influenced by Graham Greene novels. Bookish indie fans, look no further.) Writing the album was intimate. Tom drafted the nucleus of a song on an unplugged electric guitar and brought it over to Evan’s apartment, where the pair sat in his bedroom, placing percussive beats from a drum machine under nascent melodies, passing a bass back and forth, adding organs and bridges where necessary. “It’s computer music trying extremely hard not to sound like computer music,” Tom jokes. Fearful that limited and expensive studio time would kneecap the project creatively, eroding their charming naivete, the pair re-recorded the album in a storage space owned by Evan’s boss. Ornamentation through collaboration followed: there’s Aaron Goldstein on Pedal Steel in the Go-Betweens’ “Cattle and Cane”-channeling interlude “Patience Wearing Thin,” Eliza Niemi on cello (“18 Cigarettes,” a song loosely inspired by a 1997 Oasis performance of “Don’t Go Away”), and backing harmonies from Carpark labelmates The Beths (on an ode to friendship at a distance, “How Lonely Are You?,” “Always There,” and on the sped-up Syd Barrett stylings of “Under The Rolling Moon.”) While in his native Australia due to covid-19, Evan worked closely with producer James Cecil (The Goon Sax, Architecture in Helsinki) on Modern Fiction’s finishing touches—at one point, in the mountains of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, recorded a string quartet (featured on “Fit to Burst,” “Always There,” “Sullen Leering Hope,” “Twere Ever Thus,” “Grand Final Day.”)

It’s danceable, depressive fun, with some relief: in “Always There” and “Sullen Leering Hope,” Modern Fiction’s faithful heart. “There’s a tendency in my writing, because of my world view, to be very bleak.” Tom explains. “A quality I don’t always see in myself and really appreciate in others is the courage to go on.” And yet, the record manages resiliency—enough for pop fans to fall in love with. Bassist, composer and arranger Devin Hoff has been intensively studying the music of Anne Briggs for over a decade, transcribing, practicing, arranging and performing songs from her limited recorded output. Briggs was a leading light of the 1960’s English folk scene, a gifted songwriter and improvisor, as well as an amateur musicologist who revived traditional English, Scottish, and Irish Traveler songs with an unpretentious approach that perhaps presaged the rebellion of punk as much as it honored tradition. This record is an appreciation of Briggs' extraordinarily transcendent music, more than a tribute to a persona. Hoff has been active in international creative music circles for decades, performing and recording Solo Bass music as well with a wide range of artists. In addition to the talent assembled here, Hoff has collaborated with legendary iconoclasts such as Yoko Ono and Amiri Baraka, virtuoso instrumentalists Nels Cline, Vijay Iyer, Ben Goldberg and Ava Mendoza, underground heroes Cibo Matto, Jewlia Eisenberg, and Carla Bozulich, and punk rock legends such as Mike Watt, Kira Roessler, and Bill Stevenson among many others. The arrangements here include collaborations with musician friends that share a fascination with mining specific folk forms for universal and timeless truths set against multi-tracked bass choirs solo upright bass retellings of Briggs’ a capella songs that transcend the limitations of instrument and genre. The collaborations came about very organically through casually inviting musician friends to participate. Hoff has recorded and performed previously with most of the musicians: he befriended Julia Holter, Shannon Lay, and Sharon Van Etten through playing bass for their own projects, oud player Alejandro Farha and saxophonist Howard Wiley are old close friends and long term cohorts, whereas Emmett Kelly and Jim White are more recent collaborators. Voices From the Empty Moor seeks to honor the mystery and beauty of Anne Briggs’ music while maintaining its own unique perspective, foregrounding powerful emotion and, hopefully, magical transformation.

This pop art combo were known for their outrageous live concert performances and were ‘removed’ from a tour with The Who in Germany in 1967 when they ‘out-Who’d The Who’. John's Children were out and about being a nuisance for less than two years but in that time, they released six singles and one album, but predictably none troubled the charts. It wasn’t until decades later that they were acknowledged for the impact they had on the music scene by some of the more ‘hip’ and ‘cool’ types and those failed to chart singles are now worth a considerable number English pounds to serious collectors. When TV Eye, the Second City’s Stooges-inspired garage punk band split, Daves Twist (drums)

and Kusworth (guitar) and Paul Adams (guitar) approached Duffy (vocals) and Simon Colley (bass) from the first Duran Duran line-up to join their new project. So began Obviously Five Believers, who in turn became The Subterranean Hawks, before settling on The Hawks. Adored by most who saw them, they recorded constantly, spawning one highly collectable single, ‘Words Of Hope’. They lasted from ’79 until Christmas ’81 “falling apart in a myriad of acrimony,” as Duffy wrote in 1984..Years passed with the various members each finding degrees of success: Duffy solo, and with the Lilac Time; Kusworth with Nikki Sudden and numerous other bands, often alongside current Black Bomber Twist. In 2019, when Duffy and Kusworth last met, Duffy, as custodian of The Hawks’ ‘tape archive’, promised that the recordings would one day be released. Sadly this was not soon enough for Kusworth who tragically passed away last year. Duffy has remained as good as his word, however, in bringing these ten songs to release, in honour of his friend. Having languished on cassette for 40 years, they’re now set free, sounding the best they’ve done since the day they were recorded, thanks to the judicious mastering of Grammy-winning engineer John Paterno. ‘Twas ever thus. They were the perfect group. They had everything save for a parcel of good luck. If there were any justice the Hawks would be one of the most revered groups on planet earth. But this world is corrupt and the accolades and laurels they deserved never fell their way. They were such a great band. Okyerema Asante - Drum Message Strut return to the rich archives of Black Fire Records for the Drum Message album by Ghanaian master percussionist Okyerema Asante from 1977. After playing a short spell early in his career with Ebo Taylor’s Blue Monks band at Tip Toe’s in Accra, Asante joined the fledgling Hedzoleh Soundz during the early ‘70s at their Napoleon Club residency in the city. After playing Fela’s Shrine, Fela recommended them to Hugh Masekela as an ideal backing band and Hedzoleh joined Masekela on a US tour in December 1973. Sharing the same management company, Charisma, Asante first met Plunky and Oneness Of Juju during an East coast tour with Masekela, starting a relationship with the band that has endured until today. Recorded at Arrest Studios in Washington D.C. in October 1977 and featuring musicians from Oneness alongside Gil Scott Heron cohort Brian Jackson on piano, Drum Message represents an important milestone for Asante: “This album really came from my heart. I wanted to project the African spirit in the music and come out with some unique African jazz. To be able to record it on Black Fire was extra special.” The album also involved some serious physical graft: “The studio was up on the 14th Floor and the elevator was often broken down. I showed up with a van full of African drums and Jimmy Gray from Black Fire and myself had to carry them all the way up there, each day!” The resultant album was well worth the sweat. ‘Adowa’ adds jazz arrangements to a traditional Asante rhythm and Oneness classic ‘Follow Me’ is skilfully re-worked (“I used the bass drum in place of the bass guitar so it was all based on rhythms.”). New versions of Asante dancefloor favourite ‘Sabi’ sit alongside the mellow groove of ‘Asante Sana’ (“I wanted something cool like reggae or highlife on that track, a similar vibe. So, I went inbetween.”). Drum Message only previously surfaced on a Black Fire CD in 1993. Now receiving its first full international release and its first ever vinyl issue, the album has been fully remastered by The Carvery. Package features unseen photos and a brand new interview with Okyerema Asante tracing the ups and downs of his career in music. Released on CD, 2LP, digital and streaming.

Haiku Salut, the acclaimed electronica trio from the Derbyshire dales release their fifth album. A beautiful study of ghosts and memory, the gestation of the record began when Haiku Salut’s Sophie Barkerwood was given a Tascam field recorder. “I carried it around with me in case anything interesting happened. I guess I wanted to capture little pieces of the world in the same way we all take photographs,” explains Sophie. “It wasn’t immediately apparent that we would begin to use these sounds as the architecture for an album but as our writing process evolved the textures of these memories became a bank of inspiration.” Musically, the album marries the expansive vision of their third album, ‘There Is No Elsewhere’, which celebrated identity and community, with the darker, more contemplative feel of their fourth album, the trio’s original soundtrack for Buster Keaton’s ‘The General’. Building on the lessons learned working on ‘The General’, ‘The Hill, The Light, The Ghost’ is a cohesive suite, nine songs that combine to tell a larger story – that of experience and memory, of precious moments and echoes of past lives. Reviews confirmed to run in Uncut, Mojo, Electronic Sound, Wire and more. (1) Wide Awake (2) Entering (3) We Need These Beams (4) I Dreamed I Was Awake For A Very Long Time (5) How The Day Starts (6) All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace (7) Try Again And Again And Again (8) Trespass (9) All Clear

Caroline Marie Brooks Everything at the Same Time There’s a wall, in your family home. It’s next to an old stairway that leads to an attic you never go into, but the wall is alive and lined with photos. Each one a cherished memory locked in time, waiting to be brought down, dusted off and held in the hand of a storyteller intimately connected with the finer points of every detail. Caroline Marie Brooks is just such a storyteller. On Everything at the Same Time, the first solo outing from ⅓ of Canadian harmony trio Good Lovelies, Brooks walks you through a wall of stories, taking moments from her life down and carefully recounting the feeling of the sun and the wind in the trees from days past and present. Over 11 tracks, Brooks leads a vivid journey through feelings familiar to our hearts. Gentle guitar work laying a backdrop for Brooks’ sweetly divine vocals, densely layered with wurlitzers and mandolins and steel guitars to evoke feelings of memories both lost and found. Lead single “Vitamin” evokes a sundrenched nostalgia, albeit a nostalgia happening right in front of you, one that you can live in and hold onto. Even at the end of the record, with a cover of Roger Miller’s classic “Oo-De-Lally” (from Disney’s Robin Hood), Caroline Marie Brooks has crafted an album that feels wholly familiar and distinctly her own - an instant classic waiting to be discovered and have its stories told. Songs like “Night Drive'' draw up the feeling of a night's journey alone, just your headlights and the sky illuminating your endless path. “I can’t always be there” is a love letter to a child growing up before your very eyes and wanting to hold on to the memories of every perfect day. Even the instrumental “Song for Fred” is evocative of a feeling, a memory. It’s a place that we draw from in the moments when the future feels insurmountable. Everything at the Same Time is a pandemic record only in time, recorded in the midst of an age when sometimes living through our memories of easier days may be all that we have. It asks only that we live and be present in the moment and to remember that though the days are long, the years are all too short. The inevitability of change looms in the distant, and Caroline Marie Brooks challenges you to hold on to the gift of the times we are in. Recorded and co-produced with Jim Bryson at his Fixed Hinge studio (Stittsville Ontario), Dream Date studio (Toronto ON) and across southern Ontario at many of the featured musicians’ homes. Everything at the Same Time will be released on September 24, 2021 on CD, with vinyl to follow later in the fall.

A lifelong musician and creator, Caroline Marie Brooks is perhaps bestknown as a member of JUNO Award-winning folk/country harmony trio Good Lovelies, though she has also lent her singing and six-string talents to friends like Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson, Lily Frost, and Peter Katz.

Since 2007 the British band have been leaving a trail of sonic fever dreams, dark psychedelia and experimentalism that beats with a heavy industrial heart and the forthcoming album sees them conjuring their heaviest and most adventurous work to date. Channelling recent limitations and turning them to their advantage, Cult of Dom Keller found themselves radically altering their creative approach and morphing their sound into a whole new beast. 1) Run From The Gullskinna 2) Lyssa 3) Cage The Masters 4) She Turned Into A Serpent 5) Infernal Heads 6) Psychic Surgery 7) Amazing Enemy 8) Last King of Hell

Dealing in a hypnotic blend of neopsychedelia, post-punk and new wave, The Third Sound is a Berlin-based band led by the Icelandic musician Hákon Aðalsteinsson, who is the guitarist in Brian Jonestown Massacre and formerly played in the cult rock’n’roll outfit Singapore Sling. A mainstay of the European psych underground in his own right, not just through his collaborations with the likes of Anton Newcombe and Tess Parks, The Third Sound has been Hakon’s primary solo endeavour since the release of his self-titled debut on Newcombe’s A Recordings a decade ago. Hakon said: “This album is definitely less gloomy than the previous one, although some ghosts from the past are lurking in the background. We always try to make something new on each album and never make the same album over again, but this feels like an even bigger change than usual, especially regarding the mood. Phil Odgers - Ghosts Of Rock N Roll Vinyl Star CD

VSRCD012

5024545940329

Fifth solo album from Men They Couldn’t Hang frontman Phil Odgers. Originally launched as a Pledge Music crowdfunded campaign, the album was nearly strangled at birth by the collapse of Pledge Music in 2018 and the loss of the majority of fan investment. Despite this setback, all fan pledges were still fulfilled and the project relocated to Bandcamp just in time for the pandemic lockdown to prevent any further recording sessions with producer Jim Knight. Finally, the album inched forward over the summer of 2020 only to crash into the second lockdown and then the tragic loss of fellow TMTCH frontman Stefan Cush in February 2021. With such checkered history, ‘GHOSTS OF ROCK N ROLL’ seems an appropriate title and its combination of folky pop and melancholic twang, combined with an ethos of survival, memory and experience create a testament to a life spent sailing the sometimes treacherous waters of Rock and Roll. The album features guest appearances by Sid Griffin and Bobby Valentino. 1. The Serpent, the Maiden and the Bear 2. Flower Lady 3. Brooklyn Bridge 4. The Last Thing on My Mind (Is Regret) 5. Totems is the fourth full-length album from New Jersey Pine Barrens experimental electronic duo Loess. The album encompasses some of Loess' most expressive and melodic yet otherworldly works to date. The opening cut blaen pulsates in odd forms yet is propelled by a micro garage beat that sounds as if alien AI might have constructed it. On the flip side, Totems is not about experimentation for experimentation's sake. For instance, the album's midpoint track, bentalls, might be Loess' most melodious work to date, warmly catchy but firmly set in the world of Loess. The duo has been quietly creating their style of electronic music for two decades in placing ambient, dub, garage, and IDM into their aural blender. Totems is an excellent example of Loess' adeptness at genre contorting.Totems is out on October 1st on limited edition clear with smoke vinyl.

SANTPOORT OCEAN TALES You can’t go home again, but Julien Mier attempts to whenever he records as Santpoort. The Sydney-based producer/vocalist, composer, and visual artist mentally and musically revisits his Netherlands hometown of Santpoort, a small coastal village of lush, green forests bordered by sloping sand dunes, with each project. “I draw inspiration from a place that I haven’t been for so long,” Julien says. “That creates this feeling of nostalgia and melancholy in my music.” Since 2018’s picturebook, Julien has crafted a wistful, poignant blend of softly knocking beat music and lo-fi, psychedelic pop under the Santpoort alias. Each self-illustrated album cover is an invitation to join him in a sonic world of sepia-hued memories, some vivid and others rapidly fading away. They are the scores to reflective sojourns into the wilderness, the hikes that find you navigating nature as much as the fragmented past and uncertain future. Ocean Tales, Julien’s second Santpoort album on Friends of Friends, takes another step into his past while artistically leaping forward. Steel-toned kalimba melodies that glint like sunlight on crystalline waves, poignant piano, resonant bass lines, soulful blues guitar — Julien plays them all to create richer, more layered lo-fi compositions of hip-hop, electronic, ambient, and blissful psych-pop, accenting many with chirping birds and recorded sounds from nature. He also collaborates with musicians like Canadian electronic duo Tennyson and Sydney songstress Little Green, the dewy-eyed lyrics of everyone involved conveying the inherent longing at the center of Julien’s Santpoort project more powerfully than ever before.

BADBADNOTGOOD Talk Memory STREET DATE: 10/8/2021 Canadian ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD made their name by crossing genres. Instead of working within traditional jazz standards, the classically-trained group sidestepped them and drew from hip hop and other contemporary genres to create a unique sound rooted in Black American music. Yet, their latest album and first for XL Recordings, Talk Memory, sees the band take a different tact: paying homage to the musicians, composers, innovators and influences that first informed their work. 2xLP: XL-1176-LP File Under: Jazz Vinyl non-returnable

With Talk Memory, the trio of Alexander Sowinski (drums), Chester Hansen (bass) and Leland Whitty (guitar/woodwinds), return to their instrumental beginnings. Following years of touring, the band paused to refresh and look at their history and experiences. Rather than improvising and developing tracks on the road, this time around that gestation process happened in the studio with a bevy of musicians walking through the doors on equal footing. As a result, the album is an aural odyssey about collective balance and harmony, with all the sense of psychedelic narrative that entails. Drawing on the energy of collaboration as it happens, the band demonstrates a sense of emotional and poetic progress, not just technique and virtuosity, all of which they have in spades. As a whole, Talk Memory emphasizes how music as a conversation is innately collaborative and improvisational and, in a way, their album is a giant take on a classic moment from live jazz or soul, where a band’s ‘leader’ would introduce each member of an ensemble and invite applause. With guests that include the iconic Brazilian producer and musician Arthur Verocai alongside Laraaji, Terrace Martin, Karriem Riggins, Brandee Younger, plus the legendary Russell Elevado (D’Angelo’s Voodoo) at the mixing helm, BADBADNOTGOOD have created an album that is a heartfelt expression of joy for the music and community they feel lucky to inhabit. PRESS “BADBADNOTGOOD affirm their position as one of the finest young jazz acts in the world” - Consequence of Sound “The band’s meticulous technical skill is untouchable” - Exclaim! “BBNG move between instruments and sounds effortlessly” - Pitchfork

In December of 2020, The Wild Feathers hauled off to a pre-civil war built cabin in VanLeer, TN where the ideas and songs from Alvarado met for the very first time. In the past, the band typically liked to collect all the tunes they’ve written over the past year, brainstorm, conceptualize, and rehearse isolated in a cabin before heading into the studio. This time for their 4th studio album, they decided to bring the studio to the cabin. The guys spent a week jamming and creating while having the ability to capture the performances while they were fresh. Produced by the band, Alvarado is the truest representation of The Wild Feathers to date. No outside musicians, no outside opinions, just us playing our new songs in a room with the best mics they could find.

Lately is a record I wrote to share some of where I’ve been with you. Whenever songs happen for me, they are like photographs of time. Last year was tough. That’s an understatement for certain. Tears were shed, lives were lost, and lonely was a way of life. I have always felt lonely, but never gone to the depths of solitude that I had in 2020. The irony of that is, I was not alone at all in that space. Everyone had lost something, and we all were trying to rebuild our lives as we knew them. As a means of keeping sane, I started to write songs. Some of them sucked. I kept doing it though, because I had nothing else to fill my cup. “The Last Tear” came and I thought, I’d like to share this. That opened the door for more. “Been” happened not too long after, reminiscing about this and that, and so on. The inspiration was occurring from simple moments, such as gathering with my family after months of not doing so. Or walking around looking at my neighbors on their porches and waving a hello. I also was finally catching up with myself, and understanding I was reeling from some of my missteps. Forgiveness can occur through written words for me, so it was quite soothing to have my guitars and a melody. Depression was a big part of fall and winter. I forgot how down I could feel. But I also felt hope in that light came from a memory of a past adventure or a stranger’s smile while walking down the street. Little things lifted my spirits. I missed my friends. I missed my family. I was devastated by the grief our country was facing, as well as the world. I felt unified in knowing that I was not on my own in that mentality. Many were questioning a lot of what was happening and though ideologies and understandings were fractured and opposing, most people I know craved to be together again. I realized that my heart was full of everything I loved and that would carry me forward for the time being. Eventually we would all get back to one another. Now that we are beginning to, I will be thrilled to share and play these songs for you. Much Love, Lilly Hiatt

When the Charlatans started out, there were countless bands “similar” to them, but they immediately catapulted to the forefront of the Madchester scene, standing alongside such icons as The Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays. The band was/is successful because in addition to being able to ride the groove, they could also write amazing songs. These were the gifts that made them among the greatest British survivors of our time, rolling through tragedy and stylistic changes to amass a terrific body of work - one that was modern enough to play in clubs but classicist enough to stand the test of time, and one that continues to grow to this day. They have notched up thirteen Top 40 studio albums – three of them number ones – alongside twenty two hit singles, four of them Top 10. Their fourth album, a self-titled release, came out in 1995. It was their most ambitious, focused and successful, and returned them right back to the number one slot in the charts. There were several successful singles on the album including it’s most successful “Just When You’re Thinkin’ Things Over”.

“A ring of self-titled confidence, marvelous swirls of multi-layered guitar and organ, this is a blur of positive vibes that will send your heart through the ceiling.” – SELECT MAGAZINE

BARDO POND

AMANITA (25th Anniversary Purple Vinyl) SELLING POINTS

On October 8th, Matador Records will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Bardo Pond’s long out-of-print second album and label debut, Amanita, with a newly remastered 2xLP reissue. Formed in 1991, the Philadelphia-based quintet have spent some thirty years mapping guitar music’s outer limits – dialing into extremes of noise, chaos, and harmony in free-form compositions that now unfurl across 12 full-length records and a nearlimitless body of EPs, cassettes, and CD-Rs Recorded by the lineup of John Gibbons (guitar), Michael Gibbons (guitar), Isobel Sollenberger (voice, flute), Clint Takeda (bass), and Joe Culver (drums), Amanita is the place where the band’s spontaneous collective creativity blazed into maturity. “Amanita was a manifesto of everything we were trying to do,” says Michael Gibbons. It was really a template for everything we did later. We were a real unit – just so creative, just making up riffs. There were songs, but they were still rooted in our freeimprov base. We had a beauty, but we also had a really strong impulse to be dissonant.” Even within the heady subcultural micro-verse of ’90s underground zoner-music, the Fishtown-basement-dwelling quintet’s vision of “psychedelia” was singular in its heaviness. “We weren’t interested in the cliched idea of what that term meant,” says Gibbons. “We were very interested in the psychedelic experience as it being a bridge to rebirth.” “What’s the chemical your brain releases when you’re overwhelmed? Endorphins. That’s what we were trying to get to when we played these parts.”

A CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION FEATURING JOHN HALL & THE HOPPEN BROTHERS

Guests include BILL PAYNE (LITTLE FEAT), JOHN JORGENSON (DESERT ROSE BAND), & ANDREA ZONN (JAMES TAYLOR BAND) This Christmas collection, our first and only, comes from a various sources, most written internally but not all. Some had previously-recorded lives elsewhere and made the cut unaltered. Some had previous starts but underwent major revisions and upgrades. Some were cut from scratch. Some are purely secular, while others center around the Christmas Story. The title cut, “New Star Shining” was recorded in 1994 for a “Woodstock Holidays” CD released only in Japan. Our only Christmas song until now, it was cut as a duet by Ricky Scaggs and James Taylor. Our version features shared lead vocals by John, Larry, Lance and Bob. The remainder of album features tracks we wrote during our recording hiatus of 15 years, tracks covered by other artists, now recovered by us.

ON THE COVER OF THE MUSIC CITY NEWS! While the title track of this 1974 album might mislead you, it’s the only Halloween related song here, the rest is prime Buck! Aside from the hit title cut, it includes a clever twist on Shel Silverstein’s “The Cover Of Rolling Stone” and plenty of exemplary bites of the Bakersfield Sound! Speaking of sound, this first ever reissue of this Buck gem was cut directly from the master reels at Cohearent Audio, it’s never sounded better! The common mark of truly great artists is the apparent ease with which they perform their craft. In the field of country music, nobody ever made it look easier than Buck Owens and His Buckaroos. With nary a wasted note or superfluous phrase, the boys from Bakersfield produced album after album full of disarmingly honest, down-home pop.

• DOUBLE LP IN DELUXE GATEFOLD JACKET • 1ST PRESSING RED & BLUE COLOR VINYL • 3RD FULL LENGTH FROM PDX KRAUTROCK WUNERKINDS Portland-based krautrock band Møtrik formed in 2013, its four members united by a pledge to modernize their beloved genre. Sharing a passion for pioneers like Can, Kraftwerk, and Träd, Gräs och Stenar, the group has demonstrated its ability to deliver over a series of EPs and albums, most recently 2020’s acclaimed Artificial Head. As they continue to experiment by incorporating additional influences—ranging from funk and jazz to psych and prog—Møtrik’s third full-length, a double LP titled MØØN: The Cosmic Electrics of MØTRIK, is a further continuation in the story of an historic genre befitting of the album’s cosmic artwork. Møtrik boldly takes full advantage of the space that four sides of vinyl allow on this latest offering. The middle of the album features two long suites that feel typical of the group’s dynamic live performances, which frequently feature fog cannons, lasers, and other prop homages to Kraftwerk and company. The 13-minute “Stabilize” emerges from a haze of synth pulses and guitar tones, settling into a steady NEU!-like chug that swells and recedes like an ecstatic wave. On “Space Elevator”, the motorik drive from which the band take their name evolves into an insinuating and sensual disco-like throb before the perfect proggy comedown in the final minute. MØØN: The Cosmic Electrics of MØTRIK will be released on 2x color vinyl & CD by Jealous Butcher Records in October 2021.

THE MIDNIGHT MONSTERS Release Date: October 8, 2021 The Midnight releases their Monsters for Cassette Week 2021 The Midnight are duo Tyler Lyle and Tim McEwan. Following up their widely successful independent release KIDS (2018), which reached #1 on Billboard Electronic chart, the group are set to release their next album titled Monsters. “I wanted the wonder of coming of age to shine through but be combined with the inherent darkness and complexity of being a teenager,” Tim says. The songs reflect both uplifting and the downbeat tones throughout. The 15-track album offers moments of quiet ambience to consider the big ideas and worries of being a teen, but it also makes room for people to just dance. Combining elements of synthwave and 80s inspired pop, Monsters is the band’s most complete work to date. Coming off a big 2019, the band sold out their entire 2018/2019 tour including concerts at The Novo (LA) and The Roundhouse (UK) in addition to festivals Electric Forest and Firefly among others. They have done increasingly well in their D2C business, selling over 25k items worldwide in 2019. The band recently hosted a livestream that raised a considerable amount for charity, Plus 1, which was featured on the Twitch homepage. Recent syncs include music featured in Season 3 of Netflix series ‘13 Reasons Why’, advertisements for Sonos Speakers, and Apple ‘Memories’ feature on the photos app in IOS. In the bands words: “‘Monsters’ is the story of being a teenager. Adolescence is messy, tragic, brutal, wistful and beautiful. ‘Monsters’ is all of that…”

Proc Fiskal's second album sees a reorientation of the source elements of his music. Where ‘Insula’ fed off samples of the ramblings of his friends and sounds of his hometown, ‘Siren Spine Sysex’ is laden with an inner voice of sampled Gaelic, Irish and English folk music, contorted and imbued into the futurist body of modern pop; the ghostly anima image of the female folk voice and the lamenting wheeze of the accordion rub against the rush of icey 808s and angles of Grime. Joe Powers’ family history is in folk music, with several of his forebears active in the Scottish Folk revival of the 1960s. It's this cultural baggage - the Caledonian Antisyzygy of the earnest folk tradition he was raised in – alongside the modernist dance music he makes, that brings a personal element to the album. The music of ‘Siren Spine Sysex’ examines dance music as folk music, re-routing them both comparatively, with the wordless emoting of chopped and screwed Gaelic vocals leading to joyous pop songs like ‘8 Mgapixel See Thru Phone’ and 'Leith Tornn Carnal’. Though fast and detailed, ‘Siren Spine Sysex’ feels relaxed and pastoral at times, its edits and drums sensual, swelling, and reactive to the music, its textures influenced by the tinny 16 bit flutes, strings, and wacky scores of gaming soundtracks.

GO FEVER VELVET FIST GO FEVER is an Austin rock band fronted by Australian singer Acey Monaro. Since 2017, the band has racked up nearly every local accolade they can: Austin American-Statesman "Artist of the Month," regular airplay and dozens of features on tastemaker station KUTX, and rave reviews from The Austin Chronicle. During the pandemic lockdown of 2020, the band had the fortune of going into Radio Milk Studios (home of Austin band White Denim) and recording a new full-length record with in-house producer Jim Vollentine. The result - Velvet Fist - is a blistering affair, channeling the band's penchant for concise, witty pop songs into some new sonic textures. The lead off track "NYE15" finds the band rocking more than ever, while the single "Amargosa" (co-written and featuring James Petralli on guitar) shares more than a hint of Petralli's White Denim melodic jam sensibilities. Monaro's songwriting and singing are also in top form as witnessed on her forceful, pliable performance on second single "Long Run": Please don’t idolise these friends who live fast and die old Romanticising sad dead men and if I may be so bold They won’t contribute a great thing to the canon of rock and roll That they’re so devoted to Don’t give up the ghost, Hank, if there’s one thing you can bank on It’s that the albatross eventually rots and falls away from Your neck that’s still so young And I’m not tellin’ you not to have fun, but you’ve been sprintin’ for a while And it’s a long run

Robert Ellis Orrall

“467 Surf And Gun Club”

FIX-003

“Very sophisticated and relentlessly appealing sunny SoCal folk pop a la Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, the guys who invented it. Fully realized. Absolutely joyful.” John Hiatt “Melodic, colorful, emotional. A fun and bubbly trip through our dad’s cosmic mind”. - JEFF The Brotherhood 467 Surf and Gun Club (www.467surfandgunclub.com) shared an address with REO's record label Infinity Cat (www.infinitycat.com). The legendary bar at 467 Humphreys St, Nashville TN lives on in this, the 10th album from Robert Ellis Orrall. “It’s all gone now - there’s an apartment building going up there - but when the pandemic started I just couldn’t stop thinking about the place. 467 was like nowhere on earth.” It was a neighborly dive with TVs that showed nothing but old surfing films. With a BB gun tin can target range in the backyard and Red Ryder’s for all. Where the smell of weed - and steaks sizzling on the grill was mixed with the sounds of laughter, beer bottles and of some of Nashville’s best rock bands. The Surf and Gun Club was home to young thinkers and old drinkers, more than a few regulars and curious visitors. And even though the sign above the door said “You can’t come in unless you’ve been here before”, everyone was greeted like an old friend. Anybody who ever walked in the place has a story to tell - and this one belongs to the man who watched it all from behind the bar. “I've always been inspired by other recording artist's work. Robert Ellis Orrall is a composer who always says something we need to hear. In that way he remains relevant and timeless. His latest offering is no less.” - Michael McDonald

“If there’s been a better record to come out of Nashville in the past few years let us know, cause we haven’t heard it” - Diarrhea Planet
