LA's Smokescreens began as a couple of pals (Chris Rosi from Plateaus, Corey Cunningham from Terry Malts) paying tribute to the seminal 80s sounds of New Zealand's Flying Nun label and has grown to be so much more. Since their self-titled 2017 the band has expanded to a four piece and honed their tunes with constant SoCal gigging. Used To Yesterday continues Smokescreen's zeal for New Zealand pop but also incorporates influences from the more melodic side of Messthetics-era DIY pop and expands into classic indie pop territory, a natural fit for the Slumberland Records roster. From the NZ-meets-Athens GA single "The Lost Song" through the 12-string driven "Waiting For The Summer" to the Paisley Underground-tinged closer "Falling Down," Smokescreens really excel in the quality of their songwriting and their ability to incorporate a disparate set of influences while still forging their own sound and identity.

Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 4 Cal Expo ’93 (2-CD Set) STREET DATE: JANUARY 8, 2021 The Cal Expo Amphitheatre at the State Fairgrounds in Sacramento became one of the homes-away-from-home (but not too far away from home!) for the Grateful Dead during their later years, and they always played well there, inspired perhaps by the good old-fashioned (and increasingly rare) General Admission policy towards seating coupled with a grassy infield for dancing. So, when the Dead settled in for a three-night run from May 25-27 in 1993, anticipation was high…but what occurred exceeded even the wildest expectations of the most devout Dead Head. Simply put, the second set of the May 26 show—captured here in its entirety—is considered by many as the absolute high point of the Vince Welnick edition of the band, as the always welcome set opener “Box of Rain” leads into a magical medley of “Victim or the Crime”/”Crazy Fingers”/”Playing in the Band”/”Rhythm Devils”/”Corrina”/”Playing in the Band”/”China Doll”/”Around and Around” that summons up that halcyon ‘70s spirit. What’s more, this 2-CD set, which also features excerpts from the 5/26/93 first set and the next day’s show, has some extra surprises in store: the 5/26/93 encore “Liberty” makes its first appearances on a live Dead release, as does the aforementioned “Corrina.” With notes by Blair Jackson and full-color photos from the gig, this Road Trip is as good as it got during the last few miles of the long strange trip, and it’s remastered in HDCD sound by Jeffrey Norman. First time available at retail music stores!

DISC ONE

This volume, the last entry in the Road Trips series, revisits June 1976, when the Dead ended its 20-month hiatus from touring with two shows at the Paramount in Oregon, then headed to Boston and the acoustically friendly confines of its Music Hall for a four-night run. This show is from the first night and was hence the third show on the “comeback tour.” The band is clearly settling back into a groove here; in particular, Jerry Garcia’s voice is as strong as it’s ever been, and the inclusion of some unusual material (like the only encore version of “Franklin’s Tower” ever performed) makes this a highly collectible show. Among the highlights are a dazzling “Crazy Fingers” from Blues for Allah (which had been released during the band’s hiatus, so new to set lists), and an exceptionally long and tight “St. Stephen” to lead off the second set. The third disc offers bonus gems, like a rare version of “Mission in the Rain,” from the last night of the run, too; excellent sound throughout, long out of print!

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT LIVE ’83 STREET DATE: JANUARY 8, 2021

By special arrangement with Blue Öyster Cult and its management, Real Gone Music is thrilled to present, for the first time on CD, the band’s July 24, 1983 concert at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, CA. Originally recorded for radio broadcast, this was long regarded as one of the best-sounding BÖC bootlegs, and now it is finally coming out on authorized physical form, complete with liner notes by Scott Schinder and rare photos. Further confirmation that Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser is one of America’s great, unsung guitar heroes (don’t miss the 10-minute, concertclosing version of “Roadhouse Blues”)!

RON WOOD & RONNIE LANE: Mahoney’s Last Stand (LIMITED WHITE VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: JANUARY 8, 2021 What do two Faces do when their lead singer (bon vivant Rod Stewart) doesn’t show up for the Ooh La La recording sessions? They work on a soundtrack for an obscure film by actor and friend Alexis Kanner (most famous for his guest roles on the late-‘60s TV series The Prisoner), and draft the uppermost rank of British rock royalty to play on it! Indeed, given the pedigree of the personnel on this project, it is rather stunning how obscure this 1976 album from Faces members Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane remains, having only been issued on CD abroad and for a brief time at that (and never reissued on LP); one suspects it has much to do with the flop of the film (which appears to have only been screened at the Canadian Film Festival), and the fact that the original LP was released four years after it was recorded in 1972. Just listen to the roll call of session men on Mahoney’s Last Stand, which was produced by Glyn Johns, himself a British rock and roll noble of good standing and fresh from producing Paul McCartney and Wings’ Red Rose Speedway when he worked on this album: Pete Townshend (guitar and “special electronic effects”), Blind Faith and Family member Rick Grech, fellow Faces Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones, soon-to-be fellow (for Wood) Rolling Stones habitués Ian Stewart, Bobby Keys, and Jim Price, Micky Waller (Wood’s fellow member in the Jeff Beck Group of the late ‘60s), and Grease Band member Bruce Rowland to name but a few. As for the music, much of it has a rustic, rural feel in keeping with the film’s setting, which follows the misadventures of a recluse who rents a ramshackle farm in the Canadian countryside, with some nods (“Woody’s Thing”) towards the blues-rock Wood would explore with Keith Richards in the Stones. But without a doubt the highlight is Lane’s “Just for a Moment,’ which is here in both vocal and instrumental versions; it’s a prime example of the wistful roots-rock that made Lane’s post-Faces solo career so compelling. We’ve pressed up just 300 copies in white vinyl…better hurry, though, cuz they will indeed last “just for a moment.”

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America. In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Watts, Horace Tapscott founded UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension). In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an African-American since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (19711975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020… right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson. With each Black Jazz album release, Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative.

CLEVELAND EATON: PLENTY GOOD EATON (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JANUARY 8, 2021 The jazz world lost a true legend when bassist Cleveland Eaton passed away in the Summer of 2020. This 1975 album, one of the real gems in the hallowed Black Jazz label catalog, takes the full measure of the man. Cleve recorded Plenty Good Eaton right after he left Ramsey Lewis’ band, with whom he recorded a grand total of 17 (!) different albums for such labels as Argo, Cadet and Columbia, including the hit records Wade in the Water, Another Voyage, and Sun Goddess. Then, starting in 1980, Eaton spent a dozen years with Count Basie’s band, and if you can imagine some blend of Lewis’ soul-funk with Basie’s hard-driving swing, you might just begin to grasp what’s on the menu of Plenty Good Eaton (the album graphics actually present the credits and songs as if they were menu entrees). This truly is fusion cuisine, and it’s (sorry) cookin’, too, ranging from the Blaxploitation soundtrack stylings of “Keena,” “All Your Lover All Day All Night,” and “Hamburg 302,” all of which incorporate disco-style strings into funky soul-jazz vamps, to the almost trad-jazz of “Kaiser 405,” to the Philly soul of “Are You Out There Somewhere Caring,” to the out-and-out party anthem “Moe Let’s Have a Party.” The cooks in the kitchen are first-rate, too, including such Chess-label stalwarts as keyboardist Odell Brown and percussionist Morris Jennings and fellow Black Jazz label artists Steve Galloway and Arie Brown of The Awakening. This long-awaited and timely reissue of Plenty Good Eaton features a fresh remastering by Mike Milchner of SonicVision, plus notes by Pat Thomas that include remembrances from Cleve’s widow Myra and long-time friend Lee Shook. A musical meal not to miss!

Barry Manilow’s music is a part of anyone and everyone who was anywhere near a radio in the 70s and 80s and the decades since. I’m not saying I was a big fan, growing up. But Manilow was the sonic, floral wallpaper of the era, as ubiquitous as the airwaves on which it sailed. Back then, I hadn’t yet picked up on Frank Sinatra’s ring-a-ding, either, but both artists were already linchpins of the American songbook. Of Manilow, Sinatra once said, “He’s next.” They are both, of course, quintessential showmen. Some years ago, I saw Manilow perform at the Illinois State Fair in a milkof-magnesia-blue blazer; He immediately commanded his audience, putting on a dazzling performance of hits. Yet, despite the pageantry and the lights, the sequins and sing-alongs, aside from the intricate and uniquely Manilow melodies, I felt as if he was transporting me to moments in his life, a life of hope and despair, longing, believing, dancing. And love—when you’re ready to take a chance. While Manilow is a great songwriter, many of his hits were written by others. Which also strikes me as important. He didn’t write them: He chose them. He selected honest, generous, intelligent music with story and style, delivered it with passion and gusto and showbiz razzle. He’s had tremendous highs and his share of lows, and he finds music that bares his soul—I think, to help us feel, too. I’d heard “Mandy” a thousand times, and never caught that “nothing is rhyming” line until Joe sent me some demo recordings for this album. Devastating. It is Music, not Manilow nor me or Pernice that writes the songs, and the day could come that Music declines to provide. The boy with the schnozz from the then-rough neighborhood

So, what does Joe Pernice bring to the picture with this beautiful collection? From a man whose Pernice Brothers music I’ve loved for years, the joyously jangly guitars, soaring harmonies, and arch, sardonic lyrics, this homage to someone else’s work is, in some ways, the most personal music Joe has released. For me, his vulnerable interpretations strip away the showbiz entirely, invite us into a quiet room with two very soft and comfortable chairs. Maybe Joe pours us some tea, and then, he plays this music as simply as it could possibly be played; no sequins, no orchestra, just Joe and you.

1. Ready to Take a Chance Again 2. Even Now 3. Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again 4. Ships 5. Weekend in New England 6. Mandy 7. Looks Like We Made It 8. Could It Be Magic

The plan was to call this album, “Barely Manilow,” but Joe discovered that a tribute band had already claimed that name. And now, he’s pleased to have dropped the jokey title. “I want to avoid even a whiff of irony,” he says. “I remember hearing ‘Mandy’ as a kid, and it was so beautiful, I cried—and I was surprised by the tears. So I wanted to treat these songs with the same respect Barry did. I'm hoping my interpretations help them get inside people in a different way.”

Mastered by Jeff Lipton and Maria Rice at Peerless Mastering, Boston, MA.

Performed and recorded by Joe Pernice. Mixed by Liam Jaeger.

There it is. In your hands, a statement of love for music and humanity, at a time when a lot of us could really use it. Even the sad songs make you not only feel, but feel better. Like so many things you realize with the passage of a few years, I’ve come to realize that I’ve always loved Barry Manilow’s music. And, here, Joe Pernice offers an intimate, carefully curated set of songs that feel—feel—like you’re hearing them the moment they were written. — Ted Allen

GENRE : POP/ROCK FILE UNDER: “F” Future Islands

Future Islands’ romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio’s most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC’s historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process. What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys-one physical and one psychological. On the Water’s narrator offers enough detail that their story feels personal, yet open enough that any listener can inhabit each twist and emotional pang as their own. On the Water is an addictive ride that demands repeat listens, eagerly awaiting the test of time. To produce these results, Future Islands fleshed out its sound with the additions of cello, violin, marimba, and field recordings. As with their 2010 breakthrough album In Evening Air, On the Water was produced by frequent collaborator Chester Endersby Gwazda, perhaps best known as producer of Dan Deacon’s Bromst. Noted guests include Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, who provides vocals on “The Great Fire,” and Double Dagger’s Denny Bowen on live drums and additional percussion. For all its undeniable weight, On the Water is not a sullen concept album. Every track on the record works both as a contribution to the whole and as a stand-alone pleasure, evident in the insistent throbs, addictive melodies, and stirring vocals of tracks like “Close to None,” “Balance,” and first single “Before the Bridge.”

GENRE : ROCK/PSYCHEDELIC FILE UNDER: “W” Wooden Shjips

Wooden Shjips, as it is today, started in 2006. The band self released a 10” and 7” that year and started playing shows shortly thereafter. Prior to 2006, Wooden Shjips was an experiment in primitive and minimalist rock. After it imploded, Ripley Johnson, guitar and vocals, assembled the current lineup of Dusty Jermier on bass, Nash Whalen on organ, and Omar Ahsanuddin on drums. West marks the first time the band recorded in a proper studio, as well as the first time with an engineer (Phil Manley). All previous recordings, either self-released, for Holy Mountain, or Mexican Summer were done more piecemeal in the band’s rehearsal studio. West was recorded and mixed in six days at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco. It was mastered by Sonic Boom at Blanker Unisinn, Brooklyn, with additional mastering by Heba Kadry at The Lodge in New York. The over riding theme for the album (as indicated by the title) is the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies. The band members grew up on the East Coast, so for a long time the history and literature of the West was an abstraction and a fascination for them. Part of the allure of the West, which is part of the myth, is the concept of Manifest Destiny, the vastness, and the possibilities for reinvention, which is not to say that is what each song is specifically about, but it was very much an undercurrent during the songwriting of the album. The artwork also touches on the same theme by using an iconic structure that is both a gateway in a literal and metaphorical sense. It is easy to see why these would appeal to Wooden Shjips, as their music lends itself to exploration. It is both transformative and transporting, the sum being far greater than it’s parts. The steady driving rhythms are the elliptical motion machine driven by the often thick and distorted guitar lines, melodic and boundless. Where they may lead cannot be anticipated but following them is exhilarating. It is all about getting there, the destination, while the experience of getting there is an adventure. It is the guitar lines that guide both the listener and the band on the literal and metaphorical journey into the vastness. The ghostly vocals, obscured by dense layers of instruments surrounding them, are alluring with their airy mystery. This elusive quality further draws the listener in, while they attempt to grasp at their meaning. While indebted to both the psych music of the ‘60s and mid-‘70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Wooden Shjips’ music is modern and in every way their own. West is an epic journey to the edge and beyond.

#17 Album of 2018 — The Sunday Times

"Crystalline reverberations and finely balanced symphonic/sparse dimensions... melodic and vocal ingenuity" ★★★★ — Mojo Of f i c i a l We b s i t e s : www.davidallredmusic.com www.erasedtapes.com PR Agent: pr@erasedtapes.com

Two years after the release of his acclaimed Erased Tapes debut, The Transition — named #17 Album of 2018 by The Sunday Times — Californian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Allred returns with a solo piano perspective on the album, aptly titled Felt The Transition .

"Felt The Transition is a new minimalist solo piano perspective on my experimental chamber folk album previously released in 2018, called The Transition. This music is reinterpreted on my 114 year old upright piano which was very kindly donated to me by my friend Adam Selzer who previously ran a recording studio in Portland called Type Foundry. This piano is very sentimental to me as it was used by a handful of my favorite musicians on their albums over the past 20 years, namely Peter Broderick’s ‘How They Are‘ and ‘Two Balloons’. Somehow in a wild twist of fate, this piano would end up in my living room as my own and I couldn’t imagine a greater musical instrument best friend. Felt The Transition was made with a homemade felt setup used to muffle the sound into a warmer quality which also accentuates the wooden creaky noises of the antique piano, which I love so much. After spending hours at a time getting lost in the beautiful sound of this piano, I started learning a few songs from The Transition with it. I was kindly encouraged by my girlfriend to interpret the whole album on piano even if just for her, so I did and it eventually found a home on Erased Tapes. Thanks to Courtney, Robert, friends at Erased Tapes, Adam, Peter, Rich, Kalani and Steph. Made with love and gratitude felt." — David Allred Kept in their original track order, from the opening chords of Scoop Troop to the debut’s standout piece The Garden, each composition gains a completely new light when performed on solo piano.

For Catherine E. Coulson came about after David watched all of Twin Peaks in one block, which inspired him to write a wild punt for the new season’s soundtrack, a tribute to the actress who played the infamous Log Lady. After opening for the legendary English ensemble and his now label colleagues Penguin Cafe at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 2017, David decided to write a song For the Penguins. And it’s not hard to imagine it being played by a group of twelve rather than just by himself, especially after Peter contributed additional strings on the original version. All of a sudden we feel that it’s in fact the less known pieces, like the album closer Poet Tree that make for an equally strong entry point to this new record of solo piano songs.

Felt The Transition will be available digitally from December 18, 2020.

”A solid set of stripped-down, lo-fi garage-pop and yearning folk-rock.” - KEXP ”Lo-fi, minimalistic and stunningly intimate.” – For The Rabbits Two years ago, what Henrik Appel intended as a side project ended up becoming a full-scale re-invention. After years spent establishing himself as one of the key figures of Stockholm’s punk underground - cutting his teeth on bass with Martin Savage Gang and fronting his own outfit, Lion’s Den - he released his first solo record, Burning Bodies, in 2018. The results were remarkable; Burning Bodies was a searing work that showcased Appel’s talent in its rawest form, cutting to the core of what makes him tick as a musician. It immediately raised the prospect of a follow-up and, when attempts to regroup with Lion’s Den to work on a sopho-more album ended in the band’s amicable split, Appel returned to the solo coalface to think about what he wanted to say next. Working again with producer Martin “Konie” Ehrencrona (Viagra Boys, Tribulation, Refused etc), Humanity is building on the stripped-down and intimate songwriting Appel worked with on the debut, this time expanding his sonic palette to include more instrumentation, at times getting closer to his previous work with Lion’s Den and Martin Savage Gang, while keeping the intimate and honest atmosphere that brought Burning Bodies the attention of the likes of Under the Radar and KEXP. Appel retains the influences that defined Burning Bodies - he continues to take his cues from the likes of The Velvet Underground and Brian Eno - but there’s also clear signs of his new-found love of jazz in the inventive introduction of brass instruments, as well as evidence that he’s beginning to find inspiration in the work of his contemporaries, like labelmates ShitKid and Cherry Pickles, too. NORMAN RECORDS 9/10 “File under "album of the year contender” Rian Treanor returns to Planet Mu for his raw and energetic second album "File Under UK Metaplasm". The enigmatic, sweaty energy of Tanzanian singeli and Chicago footwork are juxtaposed with slick, high-def bass weight which sits at the centre of the album. Opening track 'Hypnic Jerks' is the perfect example of this, with crinkled percussive loops cut through by machine-gun kicks and acidic wobbles. Elsewhere, 'Vacuum Angle' takes Sheffield's Warp-ed legacy and brings it crashing into the future, with rhythms collapsing into static and noise but never deconstructing or losing the flow. 'Debouncing' meanwhile folds gliding square synths into rattling dancehall kicks, joining the dots between SND, Equiknoxx and Wiley with a neon Sharpie. "It's using all those formulaic dance structures but just slightly mangled or messed up," he says. "I'm still focused on making dance music for clubs, but how far can you push that before it's just no." PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. BJ Cole & Dave Eastoe

So after over 50 years in music, what has B.J. Cole left to achieve? Award winning multi-instrumentalist B.J. Cole, began his career gigging with Irish Country bands on the US Airforce bases around the UK in the ’60’s. He went on to be a founder member of the psychedelic Country Rock band Cochise, who recorded three albums for UA.. As a recording artist, BJ has covered most of the stylistic territories, beginning with the psychedelic prog of 1972s ’The New Hovering Dog’ for United Artists, and then a hiatus due to the demands of his busy session career. Until 1989 and his breakthrough ambient album for Joe Boyd’s Hannibal Records, ’Transparent Music’, that combined Enoesque soundscapes with lush arrangements of Debussy, Satie and Ravel. Not content with dragging his Pedal Steel into the Concert Hall; BJ then sought out new territory in the world of Electronica, BJ worked with such leading lights of that genre as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Luke Vibert. Since then, BJ’s records have been largely experimental, and designed to expand the musical remit for the Pedal Steel, boldly going ever more deeply into the territories of Jazz and Classical Music; and then ...Where? Well, back to his roots of course. To his passion for the lyricism of Hank Marvin’s guitar, Santo & Johnny’s ’Sleepwalk’ and the music of the Hawaiian Islands, the sounds that ignited his musical flame. So who is Dave Eastoe? Dave is a great musician, a magician, a dabbler in essences, most which he found in his frequent sojourns in the Hawaiian Islands; a place and culture that he deeply loves. But to BJ’s great good fortune, he is the right person at the right time. BJ and Dave write intuitively together and Dave can play the Hawaiian Slack Key guitar style like a native. The musical chemistry between BJ and Dave is what makes this record possible. So what’s the big deal about Hawaiian Music?. Above all, ‘Daydream Smile’ is a statement by two friends who have a love for the music and culture of the Hawaiian Islands. It may not be particularly authentic, but it is passionate. It’s about time that the music of Hawaii was properly recognised for the vital role it played in the development of Americana and in the history of American popular music. Dave Eastoe: A lifelong musician / composer, Dave turned his skills to sounds and music that influence consciousness and states of being. During the 1980s he created 16 albums of music for this purpose, sold in the UK and Europe, then travelled widely with Tibetan singing bowls and Sonic therapy workshops, featuring on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Afternoon Shift’, then ending up in Hawaii where over 12 lengthy visits he found the local Slack Key guitar styles and the spirit of that music infused itself into his playing. 01 Slinky Hula Heaven 02 Down In Old Hawaii 03 Tipsy Doodle 04 Daydream Smile 05 Little Gem Waltz 06 Waltz Of The Dolphins 07 Paniolo Song 08 Muscle Beach 09 Blue Aloha

Mountain Caller - Chronicle I: The Truthseeker New Heavy Sounds LP

NHSLP032X 5055869547390

CD

NHSCD032

5055869547406

First vinyl pressing is Ltd to 500 copies in 2 Red and Purple galaxy swirl vinyl, gatefold sleeve with DL. CD digipack. Mountain Caller are El, Claire and Max and hail from London. They describe themselves as a heavy progressive instrumental three-piece, who are driven to tell stories with music and want listeners to conjure up cinematic scenes in their minds. And that they do … in spades. If one needs a sonic ballpark, think the infectious jamming of Elder and the dynamic cinema-scapes of Mogwai, underpinned by the mantric riffs of Sleep. A rich amalgam of Progressive Rock, Post Metal and Doom. Nevertheless, Mountain Caller do succeed in weaving their own unique spell. After two years honing their chops with a clutch of immersive live performances under their belts, they are ready to bring you their debut album. A labour of love; the fruit of three years of jamming, crafting, and conceptualising; a collaborative piece, where each instrument takes centre stage, within a heady mix of chasmic riffs and panoramic, reflective soundscapes. Chronicle I: The Truthseeker is a feminist allegory created in tandem with the music. As the band describe it … In The Truthseeker, we join The Protagonist at the edge of the Twilight Desert, compelled by an indefinable but urgent need to set forth on an Odyssean journey to rediscover her memory and her voice. Over the course of 42 minutes, we travel from barren wastelands to mysterious cities, encountering trials of both body and spirit. It is indeed a 6 track instrumental journey. All vividly evoked by a canny grasp of dynamics, melody and heavy, but hooky riffs, executed with peerless playing. 'Journey Through The Twilight Desert' opens the album in soundtrack mode, and develops in weight and riff (as if Goblin have taken up the baton) and closes in a full wide screen Mogwai trip .... and that's just the opening track. Elsewhere Mountain Caller pushes to noisier, heavier groovier places. Whether it’s the chiming guitars on the Krautrock/post-rock groove of 'I remember Everything' or 'Trial by Combat' and its doom meets Deftones vibe. To album closer 'Dreamspirals' with its melodic hooks and huge earworm riffs, it’s an album that more than stands up to listening on repeat as there plenty to discover. Side A 1. Journey Through The Twilight Desert 2. Feast At half Light City 3. I Remember Everything Side B 1. Trial By Combat 2. A Clamour Of Limbs 3. Dreamspirals

Myles Manley - Cometh the Softies Art For Blind Records LP

AFB66LP

5055869547642

Cometh the Softies by Myles Manley is a singularly thrilling mix of pop-song craftsmanship, outrÊ rhythms and tightly-woven rock band dynamics. Originally conceived as Myles Manley's tonguein-cheek contribution to the centenary of Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising, the project began as a set of folk songs written to jittery MPC500 backing. With Christopher Barry and Solamh Kelly enlisted as bandmates to reinterpret these frenetic beats, the music took a new breath of life, the lyrical focus widening to broad questions of identity and belonging. Ridicule by regimes of nationalism, capitalism and sexuality is evoked via the sing-song language of playground taunts, so too is an underlying transcendent mischief. The trio toured the UK and Irish DIY scenes extensively, sculpting the minimalistic and spirited live sound which is recorded faithfully on the album. The result is a music that acknowledges the anxiety of the listener in these desperate times, proffering a joyous clatter, and a thumb of the nose at bullying spectres. Originating in Sligo on the north west coast of Ireland, Myles Manley is a singer/songwriter who has been releasing music as 'popstar' Myles Manley since 2012. With incisive and idiosyncratic songcraft, and a unique vision of the Irish experience, Myles Manley first distinguished himself with critically acclaimed releases Greatest Hits 2012-2013 (2013) and More Songs (2015). Petter Carlsen- The Sum of Every Shade Function Records LP

FR029LP

7041881000263

Hailing from the far north of Norway’s Arctic circle, Alta, Petter Carlsen creates his own unique mix of progressive rock and indie-pop without limits; fusing atmospheric vocals, melancholic soundscapes and indie guitars with a prog feeling. His new record “The Sum Of Every Shade”, is exactly that. Taking inspiration from all aspects of his career, from his prog rock explorations with Anathema's Daniel Cardoso, his epic rock duo Pil & Bue, his own solo career and his indie folk contributions with Juliet Alapnes, Petter’s broad range of influences is on full display on this record. Bringing them together with influences from Micheal Jackson to hard rock from his teenage years, into a seamless fusion of atmospheric indie rock. “The Sum Of Every Shade” is Petter's nostalgic acid trip. After moving home to the North since living in the capital of Norway, Petter contemplates growth and the experiences that made him who he is. As well as the continual growth we strive towards as humans. With longtime collaborator Kristian Olstad producing and a host of musicians he’s met through his career contributing, Petter Carlsen is now a family affair. And this stands to be their best work yet. 1/ I Love The Way You See The World 2/ Dogs 3/ Strangers 4/ Contradictions 5/ Pages 6/ Giraffes and Elephants 7/ Good News 8/ Beneath The Snow 9/ Funny Old Life 10/ The Enterprise

Tau Cross - Messengers of Deception Heretical Music CD HERCD003

5060446073025

Completely re-recorded third album, textured gatefold sleeve, includes the singles Burn with Me & Messengers of Deception. Tau Cross' musical style is primarily described as crust punk, punk rock and heavy metal, with many critics referring to it as a continuation of the style of Miller's previous band Amebix. The band have also been described as alternative rock, gothic rock, traditional doom metal, post-punk, progressive rock and thrash metal and industrial.. The album is an epic journey both lyrically and sonically, as Rob ‘The Baron’ Miller grapples with the cosmological origins of evil and deception and the way they have manifested over millennia. Miller caused some controversy just over a year ago when Relapse records cancelled the release of the album’s first incarnation and the band split apart at the same time. He stated the intention to continue regardless at that time, and has rerecorded every instrument, reworked several of the songs and added new material along the way. The Baron had this to say. “ I considered the material to be an important and critical part of my development as a writer, but also as a condensation of some of the more esoteric ideas I have been following in recent years, particularly since the recent incarnation of Amebix and the consequent result that has become Tau Cross. My interest in Gnostic Cosmology, occult magick traditions and the links with the UFO and folk tale phenomena have led to a kind of synthesis and a connecting of dots that sees its full scope and import in this most recent work.” The material has all been improved on significantly, along with the production, to re assert Tau Cross as one of the more original, important and thoughtful bands in the field. New members The Kurgan on guitar and Talamh behind the drums have brought an overall heavier and darker hue to the work. 1.Yaldabaoth 2.Hollow Earth 3.Burn with me 4.Black Cadillac 5.VOTL 6.Messengers of Deception 7.Babylonian Death Cult 8.Drowning the God 9.Three Tides (or the Triale of Pyrat John Bellamie and Seawytch Annabel Green) 10.Sorrow Draws the Plough.

The Awkward Silences - The Awkward Silences Blang LP

BLANG84LP 5060114368675

Inclusive outsider pop mavericks and Antifolk legends The Awkward Silences return with their eponymous 4th album and their first release in 5 years. Led by songwriter, author and disability campaigner Paul Hawkins, The Awkward Silences combine cleverly off-kilter Daniel Johnstonesque pop songs with energetic and inspired live performances pitched somewhere between Ian Dury, Iggy Pop and the Flaming Lips. Having cut their teeth at the infamous Blang nights at the 12 Bar Club back in the late 00’s, The Awkward Silences built up a dedicated following amongst the UK Antifolk Scene before taking on the mainstream. As a disabled musician himself, Hawkins is passionate about improving access for deaf and disabled performers, gig-goers and professionals. All Awkward Silences self-promoted gigs have captioned lyrics for anyone who can't hear them. Paul is very happy to hear from disabled musicians who'd like some advice or a chat. * Graham Coxon was once mistaken for Chris from the band, and ended up getting punched as a result. We think he is a fan. CRACK THE SKY TRIBES OVERVIEW

In 1976 Rolling Stone called prog-rock pioneers Crack The Sky “one of year’s most impressive debuts.” Today, 40+ years later, the band releases a new studio album entitled Tribes, due out early 2021. The title track speaks volumes about modern society’s perpetual cultural divide, wherein each side believes its inalienable right to champion the only opinion that matters.

Named by Rolling Stone in their 2015 list of 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums Of All Time and in Twenty 1970’s Albums Rolling Stone Loved That You Never Heard, the magazine’s review likened Crack The Sky to Steely Dan, 10cc, the Tubes, and said writer/lead singer/guitarist/keyboardist John Palumbo avoids conventional melodies, preferring to repeat a tuneful phrase and then abruptly break the mood he's established with something nearly opposite in spirit. “Crack The Sky’s ensemble singing and playing are impeccable. Palumbo’s lead vocals are chameleonlike, resembling Ian Hunter’s and Bowie’s." Crack the Sky’s last studio album, Living In Reverse, cracked the charts in August 2018 with their highest charting debut in 40 years at #7 Heatseekers, #31 Independent Current Albums, and #40 Top Current Albums. Over the past six years Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn’s alias Sleaford Mods has become one of the most confounding British pop stories. Making a name for themselves by editing down national moods with one singular catchphrase, few musicians got closer to defining the last decade of British life than they did in the title of their 2014 album, Divide and Exit. Against a backcloth of feverish political affiliation shifts Sleaford Mods have stayed immutable, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson broadsided in last year’s UK Top 10 album, Eton Alive. 2020 was spent educating & entertaining the masses during Quarantine Lockdown with the All That Glue retrospective. In 2021, Sleaford Mods will take stock of an astonishing rise to a position somewhere within the mainstream with the release of their new creation Spare Ribs. They will bring British political correctness, in the truest, purest sense of those words directly to the masses. Because Sleaford Mods are sincerity incarnate. Sleaford Mods are peerless.

On Spare Ribs Jason has this to say: ‘Our lives are expendable under most governments, secondary under a system of monetary rule. We are stock if you like, parts on a shelf for the purposes of profit, discarded at any moment if fabricated or non-fabricated crisis threatens productivity. This is constant, obviously and notably in the current pandemic. The masses cannot be present in the minds of ill-fitting leaders, surely? Or else the realisation of their catastrophic management would cripple their minds. Much like the human body can still survive without a full set of ribs Transparent Green LP: RT-0197-LP CD: RT-0197-CD Indie LP: RT-0197-LPE we are all ‘spare ribs’, preservation for capitalism, through ignorance and remote rule, available for parts.’ File Under: Alternative File Under: Alternative File Under: Alternative Vinyl Non-Returnable

JARVIS COCKER January 15th, 2021

Jarvis Cocker’s first two solo records THE JARVIS COCKER RECORD and FURTHER COMPLICATIONS will be made available on standard black vinyl on January 15th. This is the first standard release of The Jarvis Cocker Record on vinyl in the US, and Further Complications has been out of print for some time and has been remastered.

THE JARVIS COCKER RECORD This was Jarvis Cocker’s debut solo album, and was originally released in 2006. It was three years in the gestation and 13 days in the making. Along the way he roped in Richard Hawley and Steve Mackey (ex-Pulp) to be in his band.

Jarvis is a both a thoughtful and thought-provoking record, shot through with lavish beauty, dark humour, satire - both subtle and savage - and a genuine and much-missed sense of Northern conviction. The songs seem to exist on a sometimes-delicately-balanced-sometimes- swinging scale between sentiment and cold-eyed analysis, each distinguished by the unmistakeable (and never better) voice of our lanky protagonist. Track listing: A1. The Loss Adjuster Excerpt Pt.1 A2. Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time A3. Black Magic A4. Heavy Weather A5. I Will Kill Again A6. Baby’s Coming Back To Me

B1. Fat Children B2. From Auschwitz to Ipswich B3. Disney Time B4. Tonite B5. Big Julie B6. The Loss Adjustor Excerpt Pt. 2 B7. Quantum Theory

*Includes 7” of “Cunts Are Still Running The World”

FURTHER COMPLICATIONS Further Complications is Jarvis’ second solo album and was produced by Steve Albini after the pair met at Pitchfork music festival. Albini’s touch is noticeable on some of the rockier numbers and has delivered some brilliant fuzz and driving beats. Jarvis himself has given a performance to make us all proud, running the vocal gamut from roaring garage rock, to sleazy funk all spiced with his trademark story telling theatrics. This is an album built to last and certainly withstands repeat listening. You’ll slowly find the memorable wisdom of this national treasure emerging amongst his ‘profoundly shallow’ lyrics about carrier bags and Hondas running out of petrol, making it an essential listen for anyone who likes their music witty and intelligent. orn and raised in North Carolina, Wilbert Harrison was 30 years old when he scored his first hit with the R&B classic “Kansas City” in 1959. It wasn’t Harrison’s only hit, but he’d have to wait ten years before “Let’s Work Together” became a surprise chart success. During those ten years away from the Top 40, Harrison recorded plenty of solid material that was heard by a relatively small audience. If you ever wondered what Harrison was doing in the years between his two biggest hits and after 1970, this will catch you up.

LON MOSHE & SOUTHERN FREEDOM ARKESTRA LOVE IS WHERE THE SPIRIT LIES Strut present the first ever international reissue of one of the most sought-after albums from the Black Fire catalogue, Lon Moshe & Southern Freedom Arkestra’s life-affirming ‘Love Is Where The Spirit Lies’ from 1977. “Lon was creating his own path in his music life at this time,” remembers Black Fire’s Plunky Branch. “We had met in San Francisco and he had become an original member of JuJu during the early ‘70s. He then wanted to pursue his own music, primarily in jazz; he was an avant-gardist and loved Tribe, Strata-East and Sun Ra.” For his Love Is Where The Spirit Lies album, Moshe drew from musicians within the Black Fire stable. Oneness Of Juju’s Jackie Eka-Ete sang and helped to write songs and members of Southern Energy Ensemble contributed, including their bandleader Marvin Daniels. “The band name, Southern Freedom Arkestra, was a proud declaration that this music was from the U.S. South,” continues Branch. “The civil rights movement had been led from there and the most serious racial animosities resided there. Lon had grown up in Southern Illinois, South of Chicago, and said that the racial oppression was as bad there as in the South. He wanted to fight back through his music and through his own actions. He found a way to bring energy and aggressive to the sweet sound of the vibes. He played with a lot of dynamism and speed. The most celebrated piece on this album, ‘Doin’ The Carvin For Thabo’, is a tribute to his mentor, the drummer Michael Carvin (also known by same as ‘Thabo’) who had played for Motown, with Freddie Hubbard and many more. This first international reissue of the album features new sleeve notes including interviews and commentary by Lon Moshe, Plunky Branch and band members with original illustrated artwork by Mary E. Greer. Audio was remastered from original tapes by The Carvery.

As one of the most exciting artists working in jazz’s avantgarde, Steph Richards is no stranger to challenging listeners’ expectations. But the trumpeter, composer and bandleader is pushing in a still more unusual direction on her new release Supersense. Along with a trio of fellow all-star improvisers — Jason Moran, Stomu Takeishi and Kenny Wolleson — Richards tapped acclaimed multimedia artist Sean Raspet to create singular, abstract scents to both inform and accompany the recording. Once exposed to the scents, which were culled from such idiosyncratic sources as “cricket exoskeletons,” the musicians responded with improvised performances. Scratch & sniff scent cards accompany physical copies of Supersense, and the record’s mission — to bring some of the tactile feeling of concert-going to the at-home listener — has never been more relevant than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

GRAEME JEFFERIES

MESSAGES FOR THE CAKEKITCHEN LP-ALLY-12-002

Street Date: January 15, 2021 Format: LP (with download)

As the follow up to his stellar memoir Time Flowing Backwards, voted by Pitchfork as one of the 10 best music books of 2019, and 2020’s Trouble Again in this Town, his first new LP in almost 5 years, legendary New Zealand musician Graeme Jefferies is reissuing his seminal early Flying Nun solo album Messages For The Cakekitchen, originally released in 1988 during the heyday of the kiwi music revolution and outof-print for close to twenty years. Between his stint in This Kind of Punishment and his longstanding role as head baker in The Cakekitchen, Graeme crafted a true solo album, writing, singing, and playing almost every instrument on each of the 9 tracks with a few exceptions. His haunting baritone centers the album’s dark emotional focus, while the use of a variety of stringed instrument sounds weaves beautiful textures that seemingly soothe the singer’s troubled soul and provide the needed catharsis that makes the album both distinct and compelling. Famed music critic Byron Coley describes Messages… as an album to be marveled at in terms of “its depth and width [and] seductive pull.” The album was recorded in Auckland and Christchurch from November 1985 to February 1987 on a TEAC A3340S Four-Track, and it was mixed in Dunedin by Graeme and his brother and former TKP and Nocturnal Projections bandmate, Peter Jefferies. Here, we hear the origins of the “found-sound” tapestries which continue to be a hallmark of Graeme’s music to this day. Graeme plays all the instruments on the release with the exception of drums on “Nothing That’s New” and “The Greenkeepers” played by Gary Sullivan, and keyboards on “Prisoner of a Single Passion,” which were played by Maxine Fleming. Words and music are also Graeme’s with the exception of “Prisoner of a Single Passion” which were written and sung by Fleming as well. While there is a new two-piece live version of The Cakekitchen featuring Brett Jones of the Nocturnal Projections that toured Germany and Belgium in 2019, playing a large cross section of Cakekitchen, This Kind of Punishment and Nocturnal Projections songs to appreciative audiences, the current health crisis has allowed Graeme to focus on playing solo again. While he and Brett continue to work on new material together virtually and plan to tour again when possible, Graeme played a solo show in Auckland in July 2020, and he is in the process of scheduling a solo NZ tour for later this year that will feature shows across both islands.

SALES POINTS

- 140g black vinyl LP housed in jacket with lyric insert. (download code included). - Ally Records sophomore release and the reissue of seminal 1988 Flying Nun album from internationally known, legendary multi-instrumentalist Graeme Jefferies – his first solo record and the bridge for the launch of his main recording project, The Cakekitchen. Messages For The Cakekitchen has been out of print for nearly twenty years, and this is the first domestic US pressing since 1993. This edition features Graeme’s intended full-color version of the original jacket artwork and insert for the first time. - Earlier bands Graeme starred in include Nocturnal Projections This Kind of Punishment, and The Sombretones, and previous albums by these bands and The Cakekitchen were released by Flying Nun, Xpressway, Homestead, Ajax, Merge, Raffmond, Freek, Superior Viaduct, and Dais. - “A very rewarding glimpse at an overlooked genius—a songwriter with the ability to seduce you into acidic Nick Drake day dreams.” – Michael Peters, Alternative Press - “Sculpting intense poetic moods out of the barest elements, Jefferies has fashioned an immensely personal yet plainly approachable solo album.” – CMJ New Music Report - “On this album, Jefferies’s guitar rakes through the embers of his soul’s furnace, stirring up plumes of pure white heat, while his rich basso invokes a vision of love fallen down a well. The stark setting and the claustrophobic recording technique combined with the material make this a world-class pit in which the luckless can bury their heads. The rest of us can just marvel at its depth and width while trying to avoid its seductive pull. A goddamn masterpiece.” – Byron Coley, Spin - RIYL: Nocturnal Projections, This Kind of Punishment, The Velvet Underground, The Gordons, Bailter Space, Swans, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Dead C., Alastair Galbraith, Joy Division, John Cale, Guided By Voices, Kevin Ayers, Nick Drake, East River Pipe.

OVERVIEW:

Majestic offering from progressive time travelers Ring Van Möbius Analog puritists Ring Van Möbius are known for being true to the original progressive rock philosophy, combining 60’s/70’s instruments with the old art of tape recording, adding their own touch of musical creative madness. The Norwegian trio delivers their second album “The 3rd Majesty” in mesmerising manner - a Hammond-driven progressive pearl which could just as easily have been released in 1971 as in 2020. This epic record includes lengthy opuses incorporating instruments such as tubular bells, theremin, a string quartet, timpani and a massive modular synthesizer to name a few, in addition to the raw power of the Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, drums and electric bass guitar - recorded in their Spectral Tape Studio and mastered at Lunds Lyd. The lyrical themes are of rather abstract nature, dealing with the great universal questions, as well as saddening relevant issues of today's society. “This album stands as a tasteful, dynamic journey through the soundscapes of nostalgic joy!” MARKETING & PROMOTION / SELLING POINTS  Fans of true prog rock and band such as E.L.P, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator  Available on both formats  Long awaited 2nd album after the success of their first one, Past The Evening Sun ( 2018). webadress:apollonrecords.no TRACKLIST
