KURT VILE AND STEVE GUNN | THE UMBRELLAS | μ-ZIQ & MRS JYNX

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight This Issue: David Allen and Scottie McNiece, Co-Founders of International Anthem Recording Co.

Philadelphia (mostly, but also New York and DC), that they are constantly being called a “Chicago band.”

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? David: People usually call us a jazz label. We work really hard to push beyond that. Being “boundary-defying” is our goal, and I feel the Artists we work with truly achieve that.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

How did you personally get started in the music industry? David: The Midwest DIY/punk scene of the mid 2000s; playing in bands, organizing shows, making recordings and self-releasing them in whatever ways we had the means to.

When and where did the label begin? Chicago, 2012

What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Scottie: “The International Anthem” was the name of a song I wrote with my friend Becky Levi in 2010. . The name stuck with me and I knew I wanted to use it for something bigger someday, maybe an album or a band or something. . Couple years later, when David and I started talking about starting a label, my mind immediately went to “International Anthem.” David liked the sound of it too. I liked that it had 7 syllables. We both liked that the words had an explicit meaning: diversity, across boundaries, being unified by music.

How has the label changed since it started? David: When we started it was mostly just Scottie & myself, doing everything from producing the recordings and marketing materials, to assembling the LPs and shipping orders, and everything in between. We used to hand fold and glue every OBI strip on our LPs, even until 2019 we were doing this! All from a corner in our apartment or basement at the time… It has been beautiful to grow to where we are now, with a lot of help from friends and family along the way. We now have a dedicated studio and warehouse space in Chicago, and the opportunity to work with a bigger community of people in Chicago and beyond.

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Scottie: David and I are kind of co-principals of the label. . We both wear many hats. David does more on the production management, and operations/financial management. He also does a lot of mixing/mastering of albums we put out. I handle much of the A&R work, and artist relations in general. And have also been handling most of the “lawyering” myself for a few years lol. We also have Dave Vettraino, who does the bulk of the engineering these days - whether tracking at our studio in Chicago, or mixing/post on things tracked elsewhere. Vettraino also manages our warehouse and inventory. Alejandro Ayala helps us with marketing and digital distribution. He’s also become sort of our in-house photographer, really defining our label’s visual aesthetic. Lindsey Stepney-Wright helps us manage press and media inquiries. Jocelyn Brown runs our publishing co, and helps us with synch/licensing on the master side as well. Chet Zenor and Brian Seyler do all the shipping from our Chicago warehouse. Lisa Giordano works as an in-house booking agent for several of our artists. We have a handful of close collaborator / outside contractors who feel pretty critical to all our label’s operations as well. . Including graphic designer Craig Hansen who does finishing touches on all our releases, and Nicole McKenzie who manages UK press/radio, and Daniela Siemon, who does German press/radio. Our old friend David Brown has recently gotten involved too, helping us with indie retail marketing aka calling up record stores and trying to help us spread the good word on our releases. There’s honestly so many people who pitch in to help make this possible. . And most of the people mentioned above are part time employees, or outside contractors. . The functioning of our label requires the love and care and commitment of so many talented folks. .

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Scottie: A lot of people assume that every artist we work with is a Chicago artist. Chicago is very much the core, the heart, where we started and where our roots are. . But going back to 2016 we started working with artists outside of the city… I feel bad for bands like Irreversible Entanglements, a group that has always been based out of

Scottie: Haha well. . When we first started, we thought this would be a passion project that we could run on the side of our other business… We never thought we’d be spending more than 8-10 hours/week on it, and definitely never dreamed that we’d be pulling a salary from it. We just wanted to support artists that we loved and put quality pieces of art into the world, with no tangible expectations beyond that. . Things have certainly evolved since then lol. . Since then everything has become so multidimensionally more complex. . The core values and mission honestly haven’t changed, but now that sustenance is on the line for ourselves and many of our coworkers (coworkers including artists on the label), the short and mid term goals/ benchmarks/etc have become much more variegated.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Scottie: You’re right, we love them all. . It’s hard not to say. IARC0001 and/or IARC0003 right now, the OGs, Rob Mazurek’s Alternate Moon Cycles and Makaya McCraven’s In The Moment. Because. . Before we recorded that music, we didn’t even have a label, nor did we have any plans to start the label. . We owe Rob and Makaya and those recordings for inspiring us to do this work.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? David: We originally didn’t intend to release color vinyl, but for jaimie branch’s ‘Fly or Die’ album she wanted to release a Pigeon Shit color vinyl, and how could we say no to that? It surprised us how much people responded to it, so we’ve kept doing limited color vinyl runs on the first pressing. Life’s short - we try to have fun with them.

How would you describe the average fan of the label? Scottie: Vinyl collector, weed smoker, jazz liker. Post-backpack hip hop fan and/or bored Indie Rock ex-pat.

Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Scottie: Yes. David and I in fact met each other by playing in bands who did house shows together, and we organized some tours together, and hence bonded over a shared work ethic. I played drums and he played bass (he also played drums). Mostly in the DIY/punk scene of the Myspace era. We both still have instruments at home and play recreationally in bands. . Personally, with all the label work, it’s hard to find time to play anymore, especially since I feel like this work exercises the same part of my brain as the drums do. When people ask me if I still play, I often say “yes, and the label is my instrument.”

In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Scottie: Very important. It’s also very important to remember how critical of a role that music, in general, plays in the existential / spiritual war we’re fighting against climate change aka evil/darkness aka human/earth exploitation. There are things done towards the proliferation of music that may seem to be wasteful in the short term, but in the grand scheme of things, the proliferation of that music may work to inspire a larger group of humans to make more responsible / less wasteful decisions towards the betterment of our planet.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Scottie: Streaming. It was just barely getting going when we started out. Now it seems like the main format that most artists are focusing on… I never would have believed then if you told me what it would be like now. .

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Scottie: Man… so many favorites. . It’s been so long since I’ve been to New Orleans. . I hope to get back some day. If/when I do, I’ll go into Domino Sound Shack, and buy whatever he’s got in his recommendations bin.

CHUCK PROPHET

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 10, 2021

SIDE A 1. What Can You Tell Me 2. After The Rain 3. I Bow Down And Pray To Every Woman I See 4. Run Primo Run 5. Storm Across The Sea 6. No Other Love SIDE B 1. Elouise 2. That’s How Much I Need Your Love 3. Summertime Thing 4. What Makes The Monkey Dance 5. Old Friends No other Love is now on vinyl for the first time outside of a limited German release in 2002. No other Love was the sixth album in a solo career that began when California native ChuCk ProPhet split from GreeN oN red in 1990. GreeN oN red helped lead the way for the insurgent country of the 1990s, but on his own Prophet has grown far beyond the category. No other Love is maverick genre-bending in the manner of Beck and Jim White, and the stylistic variety suits Prophet’s compositions, peopled by crazed desperados and beautiful losers. The songs run the gamut from the raunchy horn-driven swagger of “That’s How Much I Need Your Love” to the stinging, pleading “Elouise,” where his ever-inventive guitar vies with Farfisa organ. Prophet enjoys spicing songs with pop culture references, but his wry humor is counterbalanced by a strong moral undertow in “I Bow Down and Pray to Every Woman I See” and the beautiful “Summertime Thing.” This is a Prophet with plenty of honor. This limited edition release will be pressed on red splatter vinyl. This release is being manufactured at MPO in France. Mastered for vinyl by Jason NeSmith - Chase Park. The San Francisco bay area has long been an important outpost of the International Pop Underground, from the 90s heyday of The Aislers Set, #Poundsign# and The Fairways to the string of legendary popfests in the early 00s and more recently to a DIY pop resurgence with bands like The Mantles, Flowertown and The Reds, Pinks & Purples. Now we're very happy to welcome into this rich pop tradition The Umbrellas, who, after one well-received tape/single, are sure to dazzle with their new self-titled debut album.

Classic indiepop influences abound, from The Byrds to Orange Juice, The Pastels, Comet Gain and Belle & Sebastian, along with a noticeable garage-pop/Paisley Underground flavor that is a hallmark of San Francisco's best bands. Lead-off single "She Buys Herself Flowers" introduces us to a band that's both intimately conversant with indiepop history but also unburdened by it, a group with the song-crafting chops and spirit to take familiar elements and create for themselves a fresh new sound. The album goes from strength to strength, studded with pop gems like "Near You," "Lonely" and "Pictures" -- tunes that sound like classics from the first listen, as timeless and elemental as all great pop. The influence of Kurt Rosenwinkel's music can be readily observed on a global scale. Whether in concert halls, basement jazz club wee-hours jam sessions, conservatory practice rooms, or radio station airwaves, Rosenwinkel's distinctive voice as a composer and guitarist has had an undeniable impact on music in the 21st century. Here we have the composer playing his original songs on the instrument they were written on- the Piano. Many people will discover that Kurt Rosenwinkel is just as much a pianist as he is a guitarist and is able to conjure deep and beautiful realms of music on this instrument as well.

Chicago-based Silas Short had a rough time growing up as a mixed-race child in the suburbs of Milwaukee, but he found solace and inspiration in music through his older brother who played drums for the church’s gospel band. After Silas shattered a bone in his left hand while delivering pizzas and was told by a doctor that he'd never play guitar again, he stuck through the pain and went on to develop a method of guitar playing he describes as "Liquid Style". The seven pieces that make up Drawing are the product of Silas using the lockdowns of 2020 as an opportunity to discover his true sound. With his honest and vulnerable yet uplifting sound, Silas hopes to honour his biracial heritage and create a safe space for others like him. PR and radio in the US, UK and key territories. rd December 2021 7th January 2022 Release Date: 3 Mixing classical and contemporary sound, Mario Batkovic seeks to explore the sonic possibilities of the accordion, without effects or loops, rather through a mutualist symbiotic relationship between man and instrument. Challenging, hypnotic and grandiose; Batkovic’s symphonic vision is unique and he has received widespread critical acclaim, including Rolling Stone magazine who voted his self-titled debut album in the Top 10 ‘Best Avant Albums of 2017’ ‘INTROSPECTIO’ is a self-questioning, self-examination of society and the meaning of sound. Featuring collaborations with electronic sorcerer James Holden and former BEAK> member Matthew Williams aka MXLX, in addition to drummer Clive Deamer (Radiohead/Portishead/Robert Plant/Roni Size), saxophonist Colin Stetson and concert choir Cantus Domus, Batkovic questions the place of sound, clichés and prejudices, taking the listener on a journey through infinite universes of sound. Musical contrasts run throughout the album. Sound aesthetics versus compositional ethics play out, it all about creation and destruction as our sound researcher creates his very own macrocosm of music and sound. LAUNCH239LP 5056321640611

CD LAUNCH239CD 5056321640628 Wielding the taut, stripped-down and bludgeoning sound that had evolved on 2017’s ‘Just Say No The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine’ and 2018’s ‘Chapel Perilous’, Gnod initially recorded the tracks for ‘La Mort Du Sens’ around the Christmas period of 2019. Nonetheless, the arrival of the pandemic took the record on another course, adding to a turbulent and cathartic vitality that electrifies the likes of the caustic Melvins-in-hell assault of ‘Pink Champagne Blues’ and the post-punk angularity of ‘The Whip And The Tongue’ with a fearsome elemental charge Masters of an approach which manages to be both unmistakeable and unpredictable. Gnod are now well established as prophets of the dispossessed. ‘La Mort Du Sens’ is no less than another relentlessly invigorating stop off on their wild ride to who knows where. “Got No Obvious Destination, innit” 01. American Dreams Records DANIEL WYCHE EARTHWORK

“A lot of this record is about memory and long stretches of time - not just making, but remaking, constantly tinkering.” That’s Daniel Wyche - a Chicago-based guitarist, composer, improviser, and professor - whose new LP Earthwork has been a long time in the UISQVO LMXMVLQVO WV \PM R]UX W‫ ٺ‬XWQV\ Consisting of three pieces, one of which is a side-long composition, the LP synthesizes guitar music and instrumental soundscapes. The result is a nuanced, cohesive collection inspired by family, loss, and legacy that falls in between Japanese environmental music, free jazz, and modern classical.

Was Home’ was very hands-on,” Wyche explains. “I gave controllers the audience to manipulate what we did in real-time. It was an attempt to have everyone involved in the music making.” When he’s not involving others in musical collaboration, Wyche is considering them - on Earthwork, this crystallizes in meditations on family and childhood in working class New Jersey. “A lot of my family members are blue collar people,” he explains, “My dad and a lot of my uncles were builders, using their hands NWZ _WZS º ?aKPM PQU[MTN [XMV\ I [QOVQÅKIV\ portion of his youth at construction sites, shadowing his father, getting his hands dirty with the red clay and soil, or watching from afar as his uncles took on massive projects such as building a reservoir or a bridge. The title “Earthwork” comes from this lineage of shaping and transforming the ground. “It becomes profound, visceral, earthy work - not just as creation, but in some sense as caregiving - in the example of the reservoir, you dig this big hole so that all these people can have water.” That image of a wellspring is central to the feelings Wyche sought to impart in his album.

Following the release of his Marasi EP with sir Was last year, FALLE NIOKE returns with his second collaboration with Ghost Culture in the form of Badiare EP. FALLE NIOKE is a singer and percussionist from Guinea Conakry, West Africa. He sings in Coniagui, French, English, Susu, Fulani and Malinke, and plays a range of cultural African instruments to accompany his voice (gongoma, Bolon, Cassi). Since arriving in the UK three years ago, after a period travelling around West Africa, singing with a troupe of musicians and learning different cultural rhythms, the 34 year old has been making music with a number of producers, including Johan Hugo, Congo Natty, Sir Was and Ghost Culture. Collaborator GHOST CULTURE (James Greenwood)’s masterful use of electronics portray a beguiling musical landscape, one inspired equally by Arthur Russell and Elliot Smith as much as LFO or Aphex Twin. Nearly five years since its release via Errol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label, his debut LP still proves to be a hugely satisfying and charismatic trip. Celebrated as Critic’s Choice in The Guardian Guide, it earned similar plaudits from outlets including The Observer, The Times, Mixmag and The Quietus, who hailed it as “one of the best and most confident debuts in years.” He continues to have a wide impact on the culture of UK electronic music, owing to his ongoing production work with artists such as Daniel Avery and Kelly Lee Owens.

The nightmare continues. Last summer, Pozi’s 176 EP came out just as the coronavirus pandemic was offering us its first false dawn. Fast forward twelve months and another devastating wave later, we’re still a disorientated, shellshocked mess; moving once again towards normality, but with the energy-sapping tension of continued restrictions. A grimly perfect time then for the south London three-piece to return with new EP ‘Typing’ on PRAH Recordings. The five tracks here reflect another stage in Pozi’s evolution. Since coming out of the gate they’ve been a bristling, frenetic presence, toeing the line between dissonance and pop sensibility. As the 176 EP was a refinement of what they did on PZ1, Typing sees the trio becoming yet more comfortable in their relationship as a band and increasingly confident in how far they can push their sound. Typing isn’t a lockdown record, but it has been informed by it. More importantly, though, it’s yet another significant step forward from a band who’ve so far felt like something of an underground secret, despite being championed by BBC Radio 6 Music and in various places by contemporaries such as Sleaford Mods, Squid and Sports Team. Once restrictions do finally lift, that may no longer be the case. OVERVIEW Cat Power returns with Covers, Chan Marshall’s third album of her celebrated reinterpretations of songs by classic and contemporary artists. On Covers, Marshall reaches back to songs that have affected her from childhood to the present, connecting each with a deeply personal memory. She recalls her grandmother’s love for Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be Seeing You” and finding a box of cassettes as a teenager that led her to discovering Kitty Wells’ “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels.” She remembers getting chills hearing Iggy Pop’s “Endless Sea” in the 1986 Michael Hutchence film Dogs in Space and being a broke artist in her twenties in New York City spending her last dollar to play the Replacements’ “Here Comes a Regular” on the jukebox at Mona’s. She recorded the Pogues’ “Pair of Brown Eyes,” which she calls one of her favorite songs of all time, after it reminded her of one friend who passed from cancer and turned to Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind” to help her heal from the loss of another. Alongside covers of rock-and-roll icons from Nico to Nick Cave, Marshall brings her inimitable vocal power and elegant arrangements to songs by contemporary artists, capturing the defiance of Dead Man’s Bones’ “Pa Pa Power” and the dreaminess of Lana Del Rey’s “A White Mustang.” And the album opens with a dazzling cover of Frank Ocean’s “Bad Religion,” of which she says, “I believe in whatever God is called… But I think that the wretched men that have come in history to implement horror on humanity in the name of these religions is something that should be looked at universally.” Finally, Covers finds Marshall, an artist of constant evolution, reworking “Hate,” a song from her 2006 LP The Greatest on which she sang “I hate myself and I want to die.” Marshall says she has always felt “antsy” about the track and reimagined it as “Unhate,” a new version that looks back on the raw devastation of the original track in the rearview. “We all have bad days,” she says. “We all have shit, trauma, something. There are times when you feel like that. But I needed to make it right.” Marshall self-produced all of Covers; it was recorded in Los Angeles at Mant Studios with Rob Schnapf, who mixed and engineered.

SALES POINTS

Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn collaborated on record in 2015 for their contributions to Three Lobed Recording’s Parallelogram series. That previously ornate and limited title is now released in a non-limited format standing along and outside of that prior collection. The two artists, originally connected by mutual friends and geographic proximity, have long pushed the other’s continued artistic development. Despite sharing many live stages over the years, this collaborative album represents the first time that the two have worked together in the studio. Vile’s side sees him recast tracks by John Prine (“Way Back When”) and Randy Newman (“Pretty Boys,” featuring some truly *electric* guitar flourishes from Gunn) as if they were KV originals. The theme of reinvention continues with Vile tearing through a solo banjo rendition of his “Red Apples” (originally from his God Is Saying This To You… LP), retitled here as “Red Apples For Tom Scharpling.” Gunn takes on a late period Nico track, “60/40,” and pulls a lysergic rocker out of the track’s goth-ish roots. The bulk of Gunn’s contribution is the epically winding “Spring Garden,” a track in the vein of some of his other long-form guitar excursions. Featuring signature contributions from Vile and Mary Lattimore, this hypnotizing cut is unmistakably a classic in Gunn’s catalog.

- This truly collaborative LP features both Vile and Gunn supporting the other and creates for an inspired, unique entry to both artist’s catalogs. Also features Mary Lattimore (piano, harp). - A unique and popular title within the catalog of these two popular artists. - 140g opaque purple vinyl LP housed within a traditionally styled matte jacket (including Bandcamp-enabled download coupon). - 8.4 Pitchfork score upon original release. - “…Kurt Vile pounds the piano keys through Randy Newman’s “Pretty Boy”, a song that’s a bar fight waiting to happen... (His) cover of John Prine’s gleefully apologetic “Way Back Then”, sounds carefree, temporarily leaving behind his cool for a moment as an earnest balladeer.” Grayson Haver Currin, Pitchfork - “…(Gunn’s) “Spring Garden” is a 10 minute fantasy… (that) reconciles both (his) past and present with… extended beauty. The trio delights in seemingly infinite refractions of a riff without distracting from Gunn’s soft-focus hook.” Grayson Haver Currin, Pitchfork

In Spring 2021, Mike Paradinas (µ-Ziq and the owner of Planet Mu) spoke to long time friend and past label signing Hannah Davidson (Mrs Jynx) about the therapeutic power of writing music when times are tough. Both had recently been dealing with the loss of a parent due to cancer, and fresh from writing Scurlage, Paradinas suggested a collaboration. “I’ve always thought Hannah’s melodic sensibilities chime well with my own," says Paradinas, "and I've wanted to collaborate with her for a long time, since [her 2010 album] 'Shark Carousel' in fact, because she'd written some melodies that I wish I had.” In a matter of weeks the two collaborated online, sending stems back and forth, each encouraging the other and fitting perfectly together. “After about ten days we had ten tracks we were happy with." adds Davidson, "It was exciting to hear what Mike would do with the stems I sent, and equally exciting to see what he thought of my additions to his stems.”

REDEYE WORLDWIDE 505 ENO STREET, HILLSBOROUGH NC 27278, USA redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

Overall the result is an opus of deeply personal moments of grief, depicted in a feeling of serene, misty tranquility that makes it easy to get lost in. Davidson and Paradinas settled on the title 'Secret Garden' due to the melodic vista which unexpectedly opened up before them on the final track. The album truly is a melodic exploration that is so often missed in this genre. There are twists and turns in mood, from the pastoral loveliness of 'Jynxiq' and 'Unheard Melodies' which fall away to the dubby beats of 'Hi Jynx'; the sadness of 'Loss' leading into the beatless forlorn 'The Ballad of Darth Vader. The album ups the pace with the muffled kicks and warm atmosphere of 'Afternoon Sunshine', which sets the tone for the happier mood of the second half. This all leads up to the album's denoeument in final track 'Secret Garden' whose naïve meandering synth melodies, orchestral accompaniment and glockenspiel end the album in happy resolution.

Composed of friends Evan Lewis, on lead guitar, and Tom Mcgreevy, on vocals and rhythm guitar, the band built a reputation in their hometown for their bright, sinewy, guitar sound while sharing bills with artists like Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Weyes Blood, The Goon Sax and Juan Wauters. The band initially released their debut EP under the name Ducks Unlimited, earning accolades from Pitchfork who praised the band’s “lilting, throwback jangle pop,” and acclaim from outlets like NPR, Paste, NME, Apple Music 1, and more. After signing to Carpark, the updated version of Get Bleak will be released with three additional bonus tracks, “Oblivion,” “As Big As All Outside,” and “It’s Easy.” The opening track, “Get Bleak” sets a thematic tone for the EP, one of cultural self-awareness and satiric critiques of society’s pressures and the often ridiculous demands – and prices we pay – to exist. Chiming with breezy indie guitar sounds akin to those of Flying Nun and Sarah Records acts, the track, that features a contribution from Laura Hermiston of Twist, pokes fun at the idea that moving from city to city will fix the problems in your life. Following suit is “Gleaming Spires”, a track that zeroes in on the cities we live in and the push-pull relationships that we so often share with them. “Anhedonia”, via it’s tightly-wound rhythm and nostalgia-inked guitars, shifts focus to the times when one is unable to wring any joy out of the things that they find important in life. Whereas the original tracks on the EP demonstrate the debut stylings of Ducks Ltd., the bonus tracks on the album serve as indications of their music to come later on Carpark Records. Bringing the band’s characteristic restless bounce, thoughtful lyricism and penchant for orchestration, the tracks explore topics like troubled friendships (“It’s Easy”), self-destructive desires (“Oblivion”), and living with decline (“As Big As All Outside”) while maintaining the balance of earnest selfreflection and humor that endeared audiences to the original release. Full of the unbridled radiance of jangle-pop, the expanded re-issue of Ducks Ltd.’s Get Bleak celebrates the strength of their debut release while expanding their thematic and compositional horizons, and providing an intriguing glimpse of what’s to come.

GANG OF FOUR

ENTERTAINMENT!

Gang of Four was formed in Leeds in 1976 by bassist Dave Allen, drummer Hugo Burnham, guitarist Andy Gill, and singer Jon King. The band pioneered a style of music that inverted punk’s blunt and explosive energies — favoring tense rhythms, percussive guitars, and lyrics that traded in Marxist theory and situationism. They put every element of the traditional “rock band” format to question, from notions of harmony and rhythm to presentation and performance. This original lineup of the band released two monumental albums, Entertainment! (1979) and Solid Gold (1981). A third, Songs of the Free (1982), was recorded with bassist Sara Lee replacing Dave Allen. After Songs Of The Free, Burnham departed the band and Andy Gill and Jon King continued on to release Hard in 1983. After this release, the band broke up. In 2004, the original quartet reformed for tour dates and released Return The Gift (2005). Gill’s untimely death in February 2020 was cause for many to once again re-examine the group’s catalog and the legacy of these early releases was widely cited. Not only did Gang of Four’s music speak to the generation of musicians, activists, writers, and visual artists that emerged in the group’s immediate wake, but the generation after that. And the generation after that, even. In the last few years, their songs have continued to resonate with and been sampled by artists far afield from “post-punk,” including Run the Jewels (“The Ground Below”) and Frank Ocean (“Futura Free”). Gang of Four’s legacy cannot be overstated.

Entertainment! has been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road, with supervision by Jon King.

“As a kid, I stumbled upon a copy of Gang of Four’s Entertainment! accidentally and it went on to become one of the most influential records of my life as a producer, lyricist and fan of music in general. Their sparse, unorthodox, riff heavy guitars and nasty, funky, in-thepocket rhythm section drew me in, but it was their questioning of the world that kept me listening as I grew. I consider them a seminal band, whose influence and effect permeates the music world in a deeper way than many realize. Thank you, Gang of Four, for existing.” - EL-P (RUN THE JEWELS)

“For many, the music Gang of Four made during those years IS the sound of post-punk” – THE WASHINGTON POST “When I was 14, no album gave me more excitement than Entertainment! It was the first album that I wore out the vinyl grooves on. I learned the words and could “sing” along with it. Songs Of The Free and Solid Gold followed suit. Gill and King, along with Boon, McCulloch and Stipe, were rock gods for me.” -BOB NASTANOVICH, PAVEMENT

lowlife (with Kenny Beats) drugs tunnel vision

In less than a year, dvr has gone from a 16-year-old Scottish kid on the hunt for a cracked copy of Ableton, to an XL-signed artist collaborating with Kenny Beats at 17. As though A-Levels during a global pandemic weren’t enough to contend with, the prodigious singer, songwriter and producer has already self-released two EPs – tape_01 and u can call me dillon – both lo-fi gems full of frank lyrics and endless promise. “Lockdown was a creative renaissance,” he says. “It gave me all the time and resources to do exactly what I wanted: wake up every day and work on music.” In September 2021, with high school out of the way, Dillon released “lowlife”, a downtrodden and relatable number made in collaboration Kenny Beats (Vince Staples, Dominic Fike). The track sits at the heart of the artist’s altogether grungier EP, dirty tapes. While the angsty sound is a natural progression from his demos, he admits that he was influenced by the post-Nirvana energy of his dad’s old band. He found some of their music during lockdown. “I thought it was incredible,” he recalls. The result documents the past year and a half of Dillon’s life – the ups and downs (but if he’s honest, mostly downs) of an unrelenting battle with both his physical and mental health. He’s feeling a lot better now and the future – with live music in the pipeline, probably his own – excites him. “I just want to make other people want to make music.” And when the world hears dirty tapes, in all its raw vulnerability, it’s certain to have the desired effect.

PRESS “The singer-songwriter’s tender balladry calls to mind Randy Newman or perhaps a more modern compatriot like Rex Orange County.” – FADER Mixing scruffy guitars with cavernous drums, “lowlife” is a slacker anthem for those of us cursed with self-doubt and a tendency towards introspection. – FADER

John Carroll Kirby – Cryptozoo: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (STH2459) DESCRIPTION John Carroll Kirby brings his talents as a composer and producer to film scoring. His vivid imagination, dreamy compositions, and knack for storytelling with instrumental music make for a perfect match with comic book writer, artist and filmmaker Dash Shaw’s vibrant, fantastical animated feature.

Kirby’s score is at once deeply evocative and mysterious, evoking nostalgia, wide-eyed innocence, and ethereal otherworldliness. As with all of Kirby’s music, the score resists easy genre classification, melding together sounds from New Age, exotica, library music, and the sweeter side of electronic music.

Lotic Water

Release date: 29th October 2021 (CD + Digital) 14th January 2022 (Both Marbled + Classic Black Vinyl)

J’Kerian Morgan, the artist known as Lotic will release her new album 'Water' on October 29th “This is the record I always wanted to write. This feels like my arrival as an artist.” Water, for Houndstooth, is a stunning revelation; a tender meditation on love’s losses and lifeforce, timelines, bloodlines, and resilience. Arriving at the end of a period Morgan recalls as, “having to be adaptable, while being dragged through the trenches,” Water adds the haunting quality of siren song to a career already marked by its engaging emotionality. To arrive at Water meant to become like water. Lotic dedicated two years to a deep, intentional process of surrendering to softness, welcoming impermanence, embracing intimate relationships with her environment and self. Yet, to embrace vulnerability is to welcome its totality. Water is the complete embodiment of Lotic’s dedicated praxis; one which unpicks a certain narrative about corrosive angst and outlier musicality. Compositions curve around the sub bass of an 808, with vibrations and hums superseding clarity and separation. Drums are softened to a powdery warmth, and each chapter unfolds as a symphonic sound poem. Heartful depictions of love relationships to others and the self, to ancestry and identity, are marked by stunning new expressions of ecstatic voices. Water heals, and it harms. It can sharpen, scald or silently consume. Water is a conduit for human corruption, such as the wrenching cruelty of forced Middle Passage crossings, yet water remains a site of ritual and absolution, a source of constant renewal. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Metropolis.

Twins Concealer

REDEYE WORLDWIDE 505 ENO STREET, HILLSBOROUGH NC 27278, USA redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

His new album ’Concealer’ “was made in a very private way.” McCormick describes the process as being akin to “peering into materials - the materials defined the record. Rather than making a record that's about an emotion, or a political scenario, or the dance floor, or the empty dance floor, or any narrative, this record was about communing with the materials and letting them speak to me. When I say the materials, I mean synth sounds, the space of aggressive digital processing inside the computer, and the formal structures of dance music.”

Daniel is well aware of how he’s been viewed as “both inside and outside of dance music” but notes that people are missing the full picture – “there's this third dimension, which is not necessarily tethered to dance music at all. That's maybe my way of hearing. Or the co-resonance with raw materials.” Informed by formal composition studies with electronic pioneer Morton Subotnick and Ben Vida, Concealer began to take shape. “I had this strong feeling that the tracks were these floating sound objects, and I was peering into an empty center point which they orbited around. The center point of empty/radiating emotional resonance... the materials took on a resonance that I responded to while I was working. It's only after the fact that the emotional contour of the album became apparent.”

The cover featuring a work by visual artist and Black Dice member Bjorn Copeland is a big clue to the sound of the record. Relaxer notes that it reflects “this open, airy material squeezed and wrestled into a contorted shape, suspended in air with an empty center. That's exactly how the album felt. In this sense I wanted to take myself out of it, to let the materials bloom into their own shape, guided by my hand but not defined by my intellect or any market concerns.”

Martin-McCormick thinks of the sounds on the album as “primarily just… resonant. I mostly hear resonant transience. Sounds disappearing into a field, or being obscured, or crumbling, or being subsumed. Loss.” Daniel continues “emotional resonance... that feeling that art echoes your emotional reality without narrowing it to a single mood. The mood is more like... the reality of one's personhood, reflected in the abstraction of sound.”

The album drifts towards some hyper digital sounds and marks Daniel’s return to using a computer in collaboration with hardware. Combining the ultra-artifice of the digital and its glossy, pure surface qualities, Daniel comments that it “gives the sounds this sickly, shiny dimensionality which is a little (a lot?) un-human. This decoupling from the human-ness of sound means the sounds can speak in their own special way. Of course, all sounds can speak in their way, but a vivid, digital, melty synth speaks in a way that feels more autonomous, or less tied to historical/encultured musical gestures. It hovers in the air and melts and glides. It's a little gross.”

His return to Planet Mu has been long overdue. It's been almost ten years since his album ‘Hive Mind’ (under the alias Ital) dropped on Mu, and this new record should be seen as an expansion and deep development of some of the ultra-artificial, hybrid digital contortions of dance music that McCormick started with on ‘Hive Mind.’ Welcome back.

YO! The Early Days of Hip Hop 1982-84 Photography by Sophie Bramly th

14 January 2022 Yo! The Early Days of Hip-Hop 1982-84 is a new book published by Soul Jazz Books/Records that features 300+ pages of stunning photographs documenting the rise of hip hop in the early 1980s, taken by French photographer Sophie Bramly.

Featuring: Fab Five Freddy Futura Afrika Bambaataa Grand Mixer D.ST Beastie Boys Kool Herc Run DMC Cold Crush Brothers Rocksteady Crew Grandmaster Flash and many more! INTRODUCTION BY: Bill Adler

Sophie Bramly lived in New York during this period and became firmly embedded in the emergent scene. The book features many stunning, intimate images of a star-studded roll call of legendary hip hop figures, all of whom were only just getting known or in their ascendency. These include Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmixer DST, Jazzy Jay, Red Alert, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, Lisa Lee, the Fat Boys, RunDMC, Beastie Boys and many more. Bramly knew that hip hop was becoming a cultural force rather than just a musical fashion, and spent many hours photographing the four essential elements of this new world: the emcees, the deejays, the graffiti artists and the break dancers. Here you will see legendary graffiti artists captured at work and play, such as Keith Haring, Dondi, Futura, Phase One, Zephyr and Lady Pink, and break dancers including members of Magnificent Force, Dynamic Breakers and the Rock Steady Crew.

Sophie Bramly is a French photographer born in 1959. In 1982, she moved from France to New York at age 22 and for two years documented the burgeoning hip-hop scene, taking pictures of everyone from graffiti artists and breakdancers to rappers such as the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. She returned to France in 1984, bringing a number of US hip-hop artists to Europe and then in 1987 moved to London to host and produce MTV’s first ever hip-hop show, Yo! MTV Raps. She currently lives in Paris and her work is featured extensively at Hip-Hop 360, a six month long exhibition showing at the prestigious Philarmonie de Paris, France (Dec 21–Aug 22).

“All these photos speak for a time that is so special, is never coming back and changed the world. It’s pretty much this experience that changed everything forever. What makes it amazing, is that you hear stories about superheroes that changed the world, and that was us.” Grand Mixer D. St WITH ADDITIONAL TEXT BY: Fab Fab Freddy, Grand Mixer D. St, Rahiem of The Furious Five, Arthur Baker, Zephyr, Muhamad of The Magnificent Force, Lady Pink, Mister Freeze of The Rock Steady Crew, Patti Astor & Slick Rick

“One of the curious facts about hip-hop’s history is how little photographic documentation exists of the culture’s early years. Come the dawn of the Eighties, a handful of talented photographers finally began to pay attention, most notably Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, and Joe Conzo. In retrospect, it’s clear that each of them focused on a particular element or two of the multiform explosion of creativity that came to be called hip-hop. Henry zeroed in on graffiti. Martha devoted herself to graffiti and breakdancing. And the heart of Joe’s work documents the career of the Cold Crush Brothers. Uniquely Sophie Bramly, unlike the others, managed between 1982 and 1984 to put her arms around all four of the hip-hop elements: the emcees, deejays, graffiti artists, and breakdancers.” Bill Adler from the introduction Title: Yo! Following in the series of remastered, top end re-issues of Norwegian prog act Airbag’s catalogue, we are thrilled to present you Identity – their acclaimed 2009 debut album. Identity was the debut album from Oslos biggest prog band – Airbag. Airbag has created their own, unique sound with elements of classic and progressive rock, chill and jazz, influenced by artist from a wide range of genres, from Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree to Talk Talk, Radiohead and Marillion (Steve Hogarth era). The album comprises eight songs with Airbag’s unique sound of classic progressive rock blended with scenic soundscapes, epic guitars and soulful vocals – as legendary Classic Rock Magazine said: “prog at its most chilled, honeyed and soothing”. “Identity” has been remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, + + +), and is finally made available on vinyl again – in a special limited deluxe version with a 12 page booklet and die-cut sleeve. Airbag has managed to create a loyal fan base from all over the world, and their latest studio album “A Day at the Beach” has already been pressed in more than 13.000 copies. January 2022

Munich quintet Fazer are set to release their third album ‘Plex’ on City Slang in 2022. Moving freely between composition and improvisation, the band’s spacious, organic sound pitches lyrical melodies from guitar and trumpet over double-drummer polyrhythmic grooves and dub-like basslines. Coming from different musical backgrounds ranging from bebop to electronic, Fazer met while studying jazz at the Academy for Music and Theatre in Munich. The German city has a rich history of improvised music; home to labels ECM (Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Steve Reich) and Enja (Archie Shepp, Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones) and Krautrock icons Embryo. Today much of the scene in Munich revolves around Radio 80000, an online community radio station located in the east of the city. There, dedicated diggers like Karl Hector (Now-Again) or Marvin & Valentino of Public Possession are doing regular shows and it’s this diversity that drives the band’s DNA.

Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA-017 // CD&DL available 12/31/2021

UPC: 195269123277

Smooth jazz has always seemed like a contradiction in terms. The idea that jazz, a musical gift to America from black people that includes revolutionary concepts of cooperative improvisation and trust, could have its edges beveled and the thrill of spontaneity muted and made “safe”, would be like taking the revolution out or revolutionary and just leaving the airy. Smooth FreeJazz is a creative display of this dichotomy by contrasting a smooth center with a fiery edge. Who better to lead the way than Dave Sewelson, one of the oldest members of New York’s Downtown Scene. Instead of music being a shag rug on the floor with the scent of air freshener, we see that it's a dirt floor with a strong wind through the window. This release has the best of Smooth and the best of Free combined to make us tap our toes on the ground and nod our heads in the clouds.

Growing up in North Little Rock, Arkansas, pianist Christopher Parker and Saxophonist Chad Fowler lived one block away from each other. As teenagers they each immersed themselves in improvised music, only to meet and realize their geographic and creative proximity just before graduating high school and heading off to college. As fate would have it, the two both ended up at the University of Memphis where they continued what would become a multi-decade musical collaboration. Their combined musical collaborations include the likes of Rufus Reid, Brian Blade, Frank Lowe, Alvin Fielder, Kidd Jordan, Willam Parker, Ivo Perelman, Matthew Shipp, Daniel Carter, Jaimie Branch and many others. Recently, the two have appeared on a number of records in larger formats including Parker’s commissioned No Tears Suite, Nothing But Love, a celebration of the works of Frank Lowe, and their group Dopolarians’ Garden Party (featuring Kidd Jordan and Alvin Fielder) and The Bond (featuring grammy winning percussionist Brian Blade)

NEIL FEATHER

Release Date: 1-14-2022

Instrumentory

Neil Feather has invented more than ten families of experimental musical instruments since 1970. Made from flywheels, springs, strings, magnets, motors, flywheels, pendulums and bowling balls, the instruments are mechanical physics experiments for the purpose of creating new music.

Two LPs and a color booklet illuminate the breadth of these Instruments and the diversity of musicians around Baltimore's Improvised music scene. All of the pieces here are improvised duets with Neil Feather and one of eleven other musicians.

Sides A and B were recorded in 3 days in October 2018 at The Red Room in Baltimore MD. Neil was a founding member of the Red Room and most of the musicians have a close relationship with the collective. The musicians are Kristen Toedtman - vocals, Susan Alcorn - pedal steel guitar, Eric Franklin - theremin, Stewart Mostofsky - electronics, Rupert Wondolowski - vocals, Rose Hammer Burt baritone sax, Sam Burt - Daxophone, and Nicole Mazarakis - contraption

Side C is duets with Neil and Rosie Langabeer as Popular Organ Fun Party. Rosie plays a 1974 Baldwin electric organ with a rhythm machine and a Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ.

Side D features THUS, a long standing project with John Berndt that used the invented instruments of Neil Feather, John Berndt and others 1993-2010. Track 5 is a duet with Jason Willet electronics. Neil Feather works at the slippery point of being at once creator and archaeologistspectator; producing a vast accomplishment that the world did not ask for, does not know what to do with, and cannot swallow. And this, of course, relates directly to the mystery of being. —John Berndt, pandemic, 2020

On the EP, lead vocalist Róisín says, “Gender studies weaves past & present in an exploration of how the construct of gender shapes our lives. From feeling like you're not performing your gender right to the way it shapes how we move through the physical, sexual & romantic sphere it marries urgent lyrics with a threatening yet (blank) sound.” “it transforms the knowable notes of post-punk into politically charged rhythms and sounds that resist the status quo” - Louder Than War “The Dublin post-punk outfit are pushing forward in this fight for justice and deserve to be heard, their message ringing out loud and clear” - So Young

THE HOLIDAY SOUNDS OF JOSH ROUSE AVAILABLE NOW!

LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL Josh Rouse never planned on making a holiday record. “I was never a holiday record kind of guy,” he laughs. “Growing up, I remember hearing Vince Guaraldi and Bing Crosby and all the staples everybody listens to each winter, but I never collected Christmas music or anything like that.” It makes sense, then, that ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ isn’t your typical yuletide collection. Written off-and-on over the course of the last ten years, the record is joyful and festive of course, but, much like the holiday season itself, it’s also laced with an undercurrent of longing and melancholy. For every playful portrait of giddy lovers on New Year’s Eve, there’s a stranded traveler spending Christmas alone; for every slick St. Nick in a suit and sunglasses there’s a lonely ex-pat waiting by the mailbox for cards that never seem to come. The arrangements are eclectic and intoxicating, drawing equal influence from Rouse’s Midwestern childhood and his decade-and-a-half spent living in Spain, and the performances here are sparkling and fizzy to match, blending jazz sophistication with rootsy sincerity and sly crooner charm. The result is a holiday record built for the long haul, a wholesome, whip smart collection that’s guaranteed to stay with you well after the snow has melted and all the decorations have come down. “I decided that if I was going to make a holiday record, I didn’t want to load it up with sleigh bells and choirs and sing the same old standards that everybody else has already sung,” says Rouse. “I wanted to write something that folks hadn’t heard before, something they could listen to year-round.”

“It was Nick (Lowe) that opened my eyes to how great holiday records could actually be,” says Rouse. “He showed me that you don’t have to be sappy or sentimental with it, that you can be yourself and put your own stamp on the tradition.” Rouse had already begun experimenting with his own holiday songs, writing a Christmas-themed tune or two every December just for the fun of it, but he’d never really considered recording or releasing them. Sometimes he’d perform the tracks live around the holidays; sometimes he’d sing them to get a laugh from his kids; sometimes he’d save them as voice memos on his phone and forget that they even existed. By the fall of 2018, though, Rouse realized he’d written more than enough material for a record, and, inspired by Lowe, he headed into Nashville’s Alex The Great studio for a four-day whirlwind of a session produced by longtime friend and collaborator Joe Pisapia (Guster, Ben Folds Five). “We recorded everything, even my vocals, live in just a couple takes,” says Rouse, who cut the album with the same group of musicians that backed him on ‘1972.’ “I’d give the guys some hints and direction here and there, but we work so well together that very little needed to be said. I was smiling after every performance.” “I approached writing these songs like I was soundtracking a film,” Rouse explains. “I was trying to bring all these little holiday scenes around the world to life with humor and heart.”

Distributed exclusively by Redeye 505 Eno St, Hillsborough NC, 27278

In that sense, the album fits seamlessly into Rouse’s catalog, just the latest chapter in an extraordinary career built on transportive, empathetic storytelling and rich, cinematic production. “This season brings the best of me,” he sings on “Easy Man.” ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ is proof of that.
