The Courage of Others is the lusted after follow-up to Midlake’s 2006 cult classic The Trials of Van Occupanther. Existing outside the plane of trends and even time, Midlake has once again conjured a novel world, but one that seems to have existed forever. Looms of intricately textured keyboards, flute, guitars and voice are woven into broad cloaks of sound, all riding the wave of songwriter Tim Smith’s sweeping vocals. Recorded over the course of two years in their Denton, Texas studio, The Courage of Others is the result of the band’s quest to create a complete work. It is an album in the classic sense, meant to be digested in a single sitting and given the opportunity to become more than its constituent parts. Here the band blends early Brit folk influences with thick-throated guitars to propel themselves toward new sounds and emotions. Creeping and epic, The Courage of Others is positioned to be the latest installment in the important and everevolving discography of one of modern music’s most unique torchbearers. Track Listing 01. Harvey Milk

DESCRIPTION: __________________________________________________ Previously known, to you likely too-savvy-for-your-own-good individuals, as the famous “Bob Weston Sessions”, Harvey Milk's s/t CD is a re-re-remastered version of the band's should-have-been debut record. The thing never received a proper release, so we over at Hydra Head decided to set the record straight… Sure, you could google search this piece now that you know it exists, but remember we got the re-re-remastered version and it sounds a hell of a lot more better… Plus if your purchase a copy from your local record store, you'll sleep a lot better tonight knowing that, among other things, your not a flithy liar and a dirty thief. I can understand your hesitance however… It can get hairy digging up debut records from one your favorite bands… Especially if they've been around a while… I mean a lot of things can happen over the years… It would suck at this point to have to start explaining that Harvey Milk is your favorite band, but with the caveat that they're really only your favorite band from '94 on… Say things like that too much and your buddies slowly stop being your buddies and you end up with a whole new set of buddies, but these new buddies you never actually get to see in person and you know those pictures aren't really of their girlfriends. Good news: You can rest assured! Nothing is lost here, only gained. Harvey Milk is as heavy as ever and Creston Spiers, as most of you likely too-savvy-for-your-own-good individuals already know, was born with that particular seabitten brand of a man's voice that we're all so jealous of.

PRESS QUOTES ABOUT HARVEY MILK: ______________________________ “Often called the Southʼs answer to the Melvins, Harvey Milk were the very antithesis of the Athens, GA, college rock scene they were unfortunately swept up in.” - Decibel “Itʼs a grim journey, and often creepy as hell, but itʼs by no means depressing. Mediocre music is depressing. This stuff is exhilarating.” - Pop Matters “Harvey Milk's soul and swagger -- long apparent but often stretched and overdriven -come together clean at last, the perfect, unpredictable pinnacle for a marvelous maze of a career.” - Pitchfork "...cult favorite Harvey Milk was responsible for some of the slowest, heaviest, and most uncompromising rock music created in the latter half of the 90s" - All Music Guide “Itʼs rock of an experimental nature – Oneidaʼs spirit, Liarsʼ eccentricity – finding itself trapped in thick waves of sludge.” - Drowned in Sound “Life… isn't easy listening (the anvil-heavy ballad 'Roses' alone could drive the clinically depressed to suicide), but the improved contrast between upbeat and harrowing makes Harvey Milk's extremes that much easier to appreciate.” - The Onion “The 10 songs here complements mainman Creston Spiers' whisper-to-howl vocals with startling dynamic shifts.” - Mojo ALSO AVAILABLE FROM HARVEY MILK: ____________________________________ Title: Life...The Best Game In Town Catalog #: HYH-159 Format: CD SRLP: $13.98 UPC: 7 98546 23562 7 Box Lot: 30 COMING IN SUMMER 2010 FROM HARVEY MILK:___________________________ HYH-206 A Small Turn Of Human Kindness CD/2xLP

Blue The Things Rodeo We Left Behind The definition of a rebel is someone who goes against the grain. For close to thirty years now, Blue Rodeo has taken the road less travelled - and succeeded far beyond anyone’s expectations. The band emerged in the early 80’s as a countrified rock band in the era of hair metal and glossy pop. Despite sticking out like a sore thumb (or maybe because of it), their single “Try” became omni-present on radio across Canada and set in motion a three decade long career of headlining every club, theatre and arena in Canada. In 1993, when grunge rock was squeezing commercial rock off the radio, they recorded their most acoustic album, Five Days In July, and scored their biggest hit, selling over a half million copies of that one record alone. And now, in the digital age, while everyone else is thinking of ways to sell single songs through the internet or snippets of songs on cell phones, Blue Rodeo has recorded The Things We Left Behind, a double album designed to be enjoyed on vinyl. Twelve albums on, the rebels live.

HIGHLIGHTS Blue Rodeo are among the most accomplished groups Canada has produced and were recently given a Star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. The band has won 12 Juno Awards, including a record breaking 5 Group of the Year Junos and the 2008 Juno for Best Group, Best Adult Alternative Album & Best Video. Blue Rodeo, led by songwriter/vocalist/guitarist combo Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy, has amassed over 4 Million units in sales, and has never released a studio album in its 20+ year recording history that hasn’t achieved a minimum Gold Sales level. Blue Rodeo’s 2008 Small Miracles tour was in the top 100 grossing tours worldwide in Pollstar’s mid-year report. At radio, Small Miracles charted in the US on R&R’s 2008 Top 100 Americana Airplay Chart while in Canada “This Town” charted Top 20 on the 2008 AC Airplay Chart.

“If as many bands played with the honesty and passion of Blue Rodeo, this would be a different world indeed.” - Rolling Stone “What their music does, more than anything else, is reach out to a rarely touched spot – a place where music and imagery are fused and lyrics become emotions, not just stories.” - Chicago Tribune

MONDO DRAG NEW RiTUALs

Ltd. EDitiON LP on COLOR ViNYL - 800 copies

c

From deep in the cosmos of Iowa, and from the same interstellar scene that gave you Radio Moscow, comes MONDO DRAG, orbiting the planet's garage, psych, space, sludge and stoner rock. With a wall of sound all their own, an arsenal of guitars, and a head full of clouds, they are on a rock n'roll mission. Formed by Johnnie Cluney (drums/vocals), Nolan Girard (rhythm guitar/vocals), John Gomino (keyboards/saxophone), Dennis Hockaday (bass), and Jake Sheley (lead guitar) the band is flying head-first into the future, while channeling artists from the past; Pink Floyd, Pentagram, Blue Cheer, even Hendrix are part of their musical lexicon, while Sonic Youth, Dead Meadow, and Comets on Fire hint to their current references. The band has been playing with artists such as Sleepy Sun, Dead Meadow, Witchcraft, Black Diamond Heavies, Radio Moscow, Jennifer Gentle, The Dodos, La Octracina, Cass McCombs, Cave, Awesome Color, Monotonix, to name just a few. "New Rituals," MONDO DRAG's debut for Alive, is an album about life, death, love, revenge, and the unknown. Especially the unknown.

OH NO ONO EGGS (

Release Date: JANUARY 26, 2010

TRACKLIST 1. Eleanor Speaks 2. Swim 3. Internet Warrior 4. Icicles 5. Helplessly Young 6 The Wave Ballet 7. The Tea Party 8. Miss Miss Moss 9. Eve 10. Beelitz

Oh No Ono is an experimental pop quintet from the tiny Danish town of Aalborg. Their music, intricate and otherworldly, defies conventions and expectations (and sometimes gravity). The ten dense, hypertextured sour-sweetsad opuses found on their US debut album, Eggs, are truly breathtaking to behold; the band creates bewitching pop symphonies that unfold themselves more with each successive listen.

SELLING POINTS • Full national press campaign by 2:30 Publicity • Online marketing and college/non-commercial radio promotion by Terrorbird Media • Video for "Swim" was #1 most viewed video on Pitchfork.tv • Limited-edition, beautifully designed artwork with embossed O-card • NYC tour dates around release date with extensive US/Canada tour around SXSW • Recommended for fans of Fever Ray, Animal Collective, Mew, Caribou

AVAILABLE FROM REDEYE DISTRIBUTION 877-REDEYE1 www.redeyeusa.com

Already stars in their home country of Denmark, Oh No Ono (which consists of Aske Zidore, Nicolai Koch, Kristoffer Rom, Malthe Fischer, and Nis Svoldgård) has capitalized on a wave of Scandinavian press, touring extensively, and receiving surprising amounts of radio and video airplay for a group so focused on an aesthetic of capriciousness and experimentation. After receiving the “Breakthrough of the Year” award from the DR (the Danish equivalent of the BBC), the band jumped into the Scandinavian festival circuit, drawing the attention of, among others, NME, who said of the band: “[T]hey sound like Devo sticking their fingers in a powersocket... at a helium balloon factory... on the moon." But the members of Oh No Ono were always trying to attack something bigger. And Eggs, their US debut on Brooklynbased Friendly Fire Recordings, is nothing if not bigger - it is nothing short of virtuosic. To record the album, the band locked themselves away in a small country house on the Danish isle of Mon for nine months. And yet Eggs is the anything but claustrophobic; reaching beyond traditional guitar/bass/drum textures, the band weaves myriad environmental sounds, samples, and nonstandard instrumentation into the mix. The sound of bird flocks taking flight are followed by woodwind players. Percussion is

played on a water-filled tub. Elephants are heard, being elephants. A massive choir of Oh No Ono's friends sing along with the organ in a 300-year-old church. Which is not to say the band spent all nine months cuddling trees and Pinking their Floyds. Like their contemporaries Animal Collective, the propulsive yet fundamentally beautiful pop Oh No Ono creates ties together all the ear games. Eggs' vivacious, even lusty approach to songcraft is the trademark of a band determined to approach pop music via the hard road, without ever losing track of the fact that they are creating pop music. From the shimmering textures of "The Wave Ballet" to the operatic splendor of "Icicles", from the cacophonic underwater pop of "Eleanor Speaks" to the falsetto singalongs of "The Tea Party," this is a band whose command of melody is superlative, and whose ability to channel and transform their myriad musical influences into something genuinely unique and entrancing is thrilling. Other talented artists have begun to take notice of Oh No Ono - the packaging for Eggs, lovingly crafted by Malene Mathiasson, features embossed, egg-shaped artwork and a series of darkly sexual, mix-and-match paintings that would do Francis Bacon proud. And the aesthetically beautiful albeit slightly disturbing - video for lead single “Swim,” directed by rising Danish director Adam Hashemi, managed to top Pitchfork.tv's charts (Tobias Stretch, whose video credits include Radiohead's "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi," is already hard at work on a new video for the band). But ultimately it's the songs on the album - bizarre, melodic, catchy, beautiful - that make Oh No Ono shine. There are wonderful hatchlings waiting to emerge from Eggs.

Kings Go FortH n

Don’t Take My Shadow – A Tom Moulto

Street Date: 01.26.10

“Kings Go Forth pivot from a garage-y Curtis Mayfield sound to swooping male harmonies that hearken back to the glory days of The Esquires with interchanging leads and heart-stopping falsettos. The in-your-face stomp of the drums go the beat heavy route of rap and hiphop while the pulse and swing of the bass owes as much to two-tone and ska as it does to James Jamerson. Andy Noble began assembling Kings Go Forth in 2007, drawing from the best players in Midwestern rock bands and Latin jazz groups, adding horns and percussion to a rhythm section that was already percolating. It quickly grew into a powerhouse tenpiece unit that attracts an avid fan base from around the Midwest on the strength of their live shows and the release of one very homemade single (homemade meaning it was recorded on an 8 track in Noble’s basement and sold out of his record shop). These are The Tom Moulton Mixes of Kings Go Forth “Don’t Take My Shadow.” Somehow Moulton, an American record producer who invented the 12” single, the remix and the breakdown section(!) heard “Don’t Take My Shadow” and was so blown away he got in touch with the band and offered to mix it. His other notable achievements in recording technique include extending the high frequencies and tightening the bottom for better sounding play at high volume and lengthening for greater musical and emotional impact by repeating key passages. Commenting on his work, he has said, “I never made a dance record. I made records you can dance to.” That is exactly what you’ll get with this 12” release which precedes the full-length from the band that Luaka Bop is releasing in spring 2010.

The Roots, The Leaves is the sophomore effort of Portland, Oregon based multi-instrumentalist cars & trains (Tom Filepp), a more personal and emotive foray than his 2007 full length debut Rusty String. Tom deftly mixes out-of-the-box electronics and found sounds seamlessly with a myriad of instruments‚ woodwinds, banjos, acoustic guitars, strings and glockenspiel‚ walking a blurry line that makes one wonder where exactly the uncommonly organic drum programming ends and the instruments and lushly layered found sounds begin. On his first Fake Four Inc. release, Tom does what he shines at, as in previous efforts‚ vividly creating microscopic ship-in-a-bottle worlds with circular themes that one can imagine crawling into, like a favorite childhood hiding place, while brooding nostalgically on a favorite time or place long since past. His distinctive and thickly layered vocals sit atop soft but steadily pulsing guitars, malfunctioning toys, twangy banjos, crooning woodwinds and dirge-like trumpets, weaving a nimbly produced record that tells a succinct and engaging story. Many guest artists contribute vocals and a diverse array of instruments to The Roots, The Leaves, including a handful of fellow label mates on Fake Four Inc. (like Ceschi Ramos, Alexander Chen of Boy In Static), in addition to some Portland, Oregon locals. Carrying on the mantle of previous releases laden with toy instruments, distorted tape samples and banjos, “The Roots” sits at a curious intersection between more folk-oriented electronic groups like Tunng and the distinctive Pacific Northwest experimental folk sound of K Records/The Microphones/Mt. Eerie. The Roots, The Leaves is cars & trains’ most realized and expressive effort to date, full of energy and intimacy gleaned from Filepp’s intense, energetic, and intricate live looping show that he has steadily developed and gained notoriety for. These are my grandparents. They passed away two years ago and left me thirty or forty pieces of songs in a series of dreams, not Coleridge-esque opium dreams though unfortunately, just regular dreams. Kinda sad dreams. This is for them. This is their daughter, my mother. I call her mom though, not mother. This is for her. This is my father. Sometimes he feels left out. This is for you too dad. This is my stomach. This is me. I started working on this record a couple of years ago at my parents' house in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia with my brother Michael. This is Michael. We had a little too much time on our hands. Some scotch too. We wanted to make a present for mom. She'd had a tough year. With little preparation (a laptop, no microphones, click tracks, or even tuners come to think of it), we recorded about 12 ideas and we went our separate ways.

Eight months later we found a free weekend in Halifax and tried the same thing, reworking a cluster of songs from the first session and adding four extra songs to the workload. We used the same laptop, but this time we rented actual, real microphones and we used click tracks for a few songs and tuners for the most part. We think. Maybe a little less scotch this time around. Some of the songs turned out to be fuller and more mature after a second take, better than expected. Other songs maybe didn't quite hit the mark. But the recording as a whole, the half-finished, early conception somewhat fragmented material, seems to do something quite nice. Hope you like it. These are the words of Paul Murphy. You may know him from Wintersleep and you may feel drawn to the haunted melodies of Postdata as you are drawn to the puzzling pieces of your own dreams. With questions like “Are you in outer space” and musings about “fallen stars in the big black belly of the Universe” Postdata floats above the terra firma where “expired antibiotics” and “empty spray cans” inhabit the planet. From this vantage point of dream flight an otherworldly vision of what ties us to our own gravity emerges. In Chemicals asks if we can be “disinfected” and “resurrected”, Tracers is “ten thousand pages in the wind”, “trading eyes for rocks and sand”, and Tobias Grey is “post it notes randomly placed”. Drift talks about names written in the concrete that were “meant to be read” and just as the waking world starts to creep back in The Coroner seems to want the listener to stay safe in reverie as the words “lie down with me” repeat. Sometimes we have to close our eyes to see. Times like these. www.postdatamusic.com

ʻMan With A Moviecameraʼ - DVD re-issue Street Date 1/26/10 J Swinscoeʼs TCO have been described as “classy and cerebral, but atmospheric and soulful too” (NME). They are one of the few bands of the last few years to successfully fuse contemporary studio production techniques with fantastic live playing, their take on jazz and film soundtracks fused together with a thoroughly modern sampler-generation attitude. And in their notional leader, J Swinscoe, they have a man who is as concerned with how sound looks, so to speak, as with how it sounds… In late 1999, Swinscoe was asked by the organisers of the Porto European City of Culture 2000 if the band wanted to score a soundtrack to a silent movie to open the celebrations. It seemed a perfect opportunity to expand the ideas of TCO into the world which had given them their name. But the difference was this was for a one off live performance. The film was Dziga Vertovʼs ʻMan With A Movie Camera,ʼ a 1929 early documentary cinema film from the Soviet Union. The performance in a old theatre space in Porto ended with a standing ovation of 3,500 people. The Cinematic Orchestra have grown and grown in the past 6 years. Selling out the Royal Albert Hall, playing Coachella, releasing their biggest song to date on 2007ʼs album “Ma Fleur” in “To Build A Home”, and so much more besides. This is the first time in 6 years this DVD. The jewel in the crown to many TCO fans, is available to buy.

Note: Steve Kilbey (The Church) & Martin Kennedy (All India Radio) “Kilbey wraps his velvety smooth lungs around the words like a boa constrictor going in for the kill, and you’re hypnotized by his voice so much that you wouldn’t even realize that the life is being squeezed out of you” - thedwarf.co.au

In 1981 a teenage Martin Kennedy stumbled upon Steve Kilbey and The Church at a strange hybrid hippie/new wave festival in Aus tralia and fell in love with their look and sound. He recorded their set on a walkman, and the songs helped spark the beginning of his music career. Just a year before, an equally fresh-faced Steve Kilbey formed The Church in Sydney, the very beginning of their public life as accidental hit makers. Twenty-nine years later Kilbey & Kennedy find themselves working together on Unseen Music/Unheard words, without any fanfare and virtually no prior planning. It was simple: Kennedy wrote the music and Kilbey wrote the words. No argument, no egos, just a matter of pressing the record button. The results are an effective balancing of Kennedy’s haunting and melodic tunes with Kilbey’s witty and intelligent lyrics, melded together by his heavenly voice. Unseen Music / Unheard Words echos the ambient sounds of Air, Thievery Corporation meeting the space-rock vocals of The Church. From the opening track “Eyes Ahead” to twelve tracks in with “Friends Are Gone” the album wraps around you like a warm blanket or as one writer in their native Australia put it “Kilbey’s voice complements the ambient sounds so welll, he wraps his velvety smooth lungs around the words like a boa constrictor going in for the kill, and you’re hypnotized by his voice so much that you don’t even realize that the life is being squeeze out of you.” Also available on Second Motion: SMR-009-Steve Kilbey “Painkiller” SMR-010-Marty Willson-Piper “Nightjar” SMR-015-The Church “Untitled #23” coming soon: Kilbey and Church reissues

NO SLEEP RECORDS RELEASE

The Upsides is a record about hope. During the past year, THE WONDER YEARS found themselves trudging through their early twenties alongside an army of downtrodden friends. It felt like sadness had become the status quo and that didn’t sit well with the Philadelphiabased five piece. On a bike ride around the fountain at Logan Circle on the first day of spring, the idea struck that this constant state of defeat was no way to live and out of that, The Upsides was born. Instead of a writing format derived from the ideas of one member, THE WONDER YEARS built a record out of opposing influences, colossal arguments and gallons of sweat. The band all moved into a one-bedroom house in South Philly and spent a scorching month and a half locked in a 15 square-foot basement obsessing over every single part of every single song, refusing to move from the practice space until everyone was content. The result is 12 tracks of overly honest pop punk that resonates with the band’s past influences like MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK, SAVES THE DAY and THE STARTING LINE, but also speaks to new influences like LATTERMAN, THURSDAY and even THE HOLD STEADY. Fans can expect to see the familiar soaring hooks and energetic guitar-driven songs that made THE WONDER YEARS what they are, but will also find themselves engaged in new aspects as the band makes use of different dynamics, instrumentation and structures. In writing The Upsides, THE WONDER YEARS have created a soundtrack for the hopeful. Throughout

the LP, the band continually sings, “I’m not sad anymore” in the hopes that everyone still feeling the weight of the past year can soon sing along. Having cut their teeth playing in various forms together for years, these five southern gentlemen exhibit their familiarity with one another throughout their debut full length, simply entitled Man. erful introduction to DIVIDE THE SEA and the bright future ahead of them. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, VENIA has a positive, multi-faceted message that stands in stark contrast to the nature of many of their hardcore contemporaries. Following relentless touring nationwide and self-releasing their debut album in early 2008, the band drew the attention of Blood & Ink Records, who immediately felt they should work together. VENIA entered Studiotte (COMEBACK KID, SAINTS NEVER SURRENDER, LA DISPUTE) in early 2009 to record their next effort, Frozen Hands. Packing their characteristic punch, Frozen Hands also demonstrates VENIA’s constant progression as musicians, resulting in a pummeling, yet

thought-provoking album with thematic threads running throughout the lyrics. Where their previous releases have turned people’s heads, this one will grab their attention immediately. MARKETING / SELLING POINTS • Recorded at Studiotte (COMEBACK KID, SAINTS NEVER SURRENDER, LA DISPUTE) • Mastered by Kim Rosen at West West Side (MASTODON, SPANISH BOMBS, SAINTS NEVER SURRENDER) • Artwork by Aaron Conley (HELLFEST, THE RED BARON) • Extensive North American touring throughout 2009 in support

NEWS m BRian Olive

new video of “Jubilee Line” You might know Brian Olive from his work in the Greenhornes or the Soledad Brothers. But now it’s time to get to know Brian Olive the solo artist. His selftitled debut came out last year on Alive, and he’s getting ready to tour Europe. In the meantime, check out his new video of “Jubilee Line,” which was shot on the roof of Olive’s Cincinnati recording studio, and is directed by Pete Ohs. “Olive drifts through an array of styles and imaginative arrangements during the album’s 33 minutes with “King of the Road” aplomb.” -- PopMatters “Unexpected is just how much musical ground is covered in this gem of a record.” -- The Agit Reader “Reshaping the past, the album presents an alternate musical history where linear evolution is replaced by spontaneous genesis, and what a wonderful creation it is.” –- Goldmine “The self-titled record is more gypsy pop than garage rock, more of a 60’s love-in than a nod to Howlin’ Wolf.” –- The Waster “Olive clearly scores high on the eclecticism checklist, but he’s also a fine songwriter, generating memorable tunes regardless of his stylistic bag.” –- All Music Guide

RADIO MOSCOW Brain Cycles Storming out from Story City, Iowa, Radio Moscow have been making an impressive name for themselves over the past few years with their raucous amalgamation of blues, garage, and stoner rock that shines pure and uncompromising. While comparisons to a heavier version of The Black Keys are inevitable, not too shockingly the band was first “discovered” by The Keys’ Dan Auerbach who produced their debut album. Radio Moscow has made an enormous leap since their debut, with their most recent offering Brain Cycles, a fuzzy, psychedelic, time shifting, jam inducing, freak-out. -- Exploding In Sound
